2014-15 SEASON NEW INITIATIVES:

THE CONCERTO IN AMERICA "Although the classical music culture of the United States is not even 150 years old, we have produced some of the greatest music ever created. In particular, the Concerto has been a major form of choice by many authors. Our celebration includes many works by Americans but also pieces that were premiered in the States but written by composers born on other shores. So music by Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff, Walton and others sits comfortably by the side of Corigliano, Previn, and McTee. Please join us for this most exciting journey."

Leonard Slatkin

WINTER MUSIC FESTIVAL Announcing a new Winter Music Festival, inspired by the success of our 2013 presentation of all nine Beethoven Symphonies. This time we feature the music of Tchaikovsky, with all six numbered symphonies and his complete concerti performed over the course of three weeks. The symphonies will be released as digital downloads later in the season.

COMPOSER-IN-RESIDENCE:

GABRIELA LENA FRANK Identity has always been at the center of Gabriela Lena Frank's music. Born in Berkeley, California, to a mother of mixed Peruvian/Chinese ancestry and a father of Lithuanian/Jewish descent, Frank explores her multicultural heritage most ardently through her compositions. Inspired by the works of Bela Bart贸k and Alberto Ginastera, Frank is something of a musical anthropologist. She has travelled extensively throughout South America and her pieces reflect and refract her studies of Latin-American folklore, incorporating poetry, mythology, and native musical styles into a western classical framework that is uniquely her own. She writes challenging idiomatic parts for solo instrumentalists, vocalists, chamber ensembles, and orchestras.

FEBRUARY 23

CAMERON CARPENTER A virtuoso composer-performer unique among keyboardists, Cameron’s approach to the organ is smashing the stereotypes of organists and organ music while generating a level of acclaim, exposure, and controversy unprecedented for an organist. His repertoire — from the complete works of J. S. Bach and Cesar Franck, to his hundreds of transcriptions of non-organ works, his original compositions, and his collaborations with jazz and pop artists — is perhaps the largest and most diverse of any organist. He is the first organist ever nominated for a GRAMMY® Award for a solo album.
