2019 | 2020 ANNUAL REPORT WELCOME Dear Friends, As we’ve all experienced firsthand, 2020 has been anything but typical. Despite unprecedented challenges, we still celebrated unprecedented milestones and successes. We want to humbly celebrate these successes, while recognizing all that has been lost as we begin to look to the possibilities that 2021 may offer. As always, your DSO aspires to a future filled with potential and optimism. That future is heralded by the arrival of Music Director Jader Bignamini. Following an intensive, years-long search for the right fit for our organization, we were elated to share and celebrate Jader’s appointment in January. He is the perfect music director for our orchestra—and he is particularly well-suited to serve at this unique moment in our history. Jader exemplifies everything that’s core to the DSO identity: boldness, vision, skill, excellence, and passion. His ability to connect with musicians and audiences alike is precisely what is needed to lead the DSO and Detroit forward. The 2019-20 season kicked off with a look back to our past, with the celebration of Orchestra Hall’s centennial. Orchestra Hall’s history of resilience continues to inspire us 100 years later, as our extended time away from its stage during the pandemic led us to cherish our home even more. The stories fill us with hope and fortitude: a community that came together to declare that a magnificent concert hall would attract world-class artists to Detroit and provide its citizenry with incredible music; a dedicated board of directors that financed and got it built at the height of the last major global pandemic; the artistic vision of those who refashioned it as the Paradise Theatre for a new audience of jazz lovers; and the civic leadership from so many who fought to save it from the wrecking ball, ensuring it will inspire many future generations of performers and audiences. We know, however, that 2020 will be defined both by our response to the COVID crisis, and by our reaffirmation to our long-term commitment to equity. We are proud of the incredibly collaborative and innovative work we have done to navigate these turbulent times. We established effective guardrails this year to protect our people and the institution and set the stage to come out of the pandemic even stronger.  We have forged powerful new connections with our community of patrons and supporters. We are strong, sustainable, and while heeding the important lessons of the past, we look to our future with optimism. With appreciation,

Anne Parsons

There’s no American orchestra that’s been through more existential crises in its history than the DSO. It has survived and managed often to thrive ... This is an institution that has survived anything and everything that has been thrown at it, and I expect that here, too.” -MARK STRYKER, DETROIT FREE PRESS , JUNE 21, 2020

2019 | 2020 ANNUAL REPORT FINANCIALS

The DSO finished its 2019-2020 season with its eighth consecutive operational surplus, a significant achievement considering the loss of earned revenue due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This was accomplished through a board-led emergency Resilience Fund that raised an additional $1.58 million; across-the-board expense cuts, including compensation reductions at all levels of the organization; and a Paycheck Protection Program loan (PPPL) of just over $4 million. In addition to a net end-of-year surplus of $430,000, the extraordinary measures allowed us to transfer $2 million to reserves for use in the 2020-2021 season, to help offset the continued loss of earned revenue. Early in the pandemic the DSO Board committed to balancing operational needs with preserving the principal of the endowment fund. Modest endowment growth was achieved in the 2019-2020 season through contributions and positive investment returns in excess of the standard endowment distribution.

ORCHESTRA HALLS’ CENTENNIAL The 2019-2020 season marked the centennial year of Detroit’s Orchestra Hall, the home of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and one of the finest concert halls in the world. The DSO marked the occasion with special programming and events, a commemorative book, a documentary series produced by Detroit Public Television, a two-site exhibition in partnership with the Detroit Historical Society & Museum, and more. ORCHESTRA HALL CELEBRATES 100 YEARS

Built for the DSO at the request of then-music director Ossip Gabrilowitsch during the summer of 1919 and renowned for its understated beauty and perfect acoustics, Orchestra Hall was designed by noted theater architect C. Howard Crane, who also designed Detroit’s Fox Theatre and Detroit Opera House. When the DSO left for the larger Masonic Auditorium in 1939, Orchestra Hall took on a new life as the Paradise Theatre from 1941-1951, serving as Detroit’s premier venue for jazz. The hall was then long dormant and nearly demolished in 1970, before a group of musicians and civic leaders rallied to save it from the wrecking ball and raise money to restore it over the course of 20 years. The DSO returned to its historic home in 1989. SUPPORT

MAYOR DUGGAN PRESENTS CERTIFICATE

Leadership support for the Orchestra Hall centennial was provided by Honorable Avern Cohn and Lois Cohn, Ann and James B. Nicholson, Bernard and Eleanor Robertson, the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan, DTE, Ford Motor Company Fund, and Varnum LLP. The DSO also thanks all members of the Centennial Club without whom our year-long campaign to celebrate the hall would not have been possible. We also thank the DTE Energy Foundation for sponsorship of our exhibition work with the Detroit Historical Society and Director Aaron Frankel and Trustee Carolynn Frankel for sponsoring the October 23, 2019, Orchestra Hall Anniversary Concert. DESTINY

CENTENNIAL FANFARE

Destiny: 100 Years of Music, Magic, and Community at Orchestra Hall in Detroit traces the remarkable history of one of the world’s premier concert halls. Written by former Detroit Free Press music critic and arts reporter Mark Stryker and designed by Julie Pincus, Destiny takes readers behind the scenes of the building of the hall in 1919 and the DSO’s first Golden Age under Ossip Gabrilowitsch before detailing the decade when the hall was renamed the Paradise Theatre and became a jazz mecca. The book then chronicles the fight to save Orchestra Hall from demolition in 1970 and the 20-year restoration and return by the DSO in 1989. Destiny also details the creation of the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center and the present day activities within the expanded footprint of The Max, explores the hall’s acclaimed acoustics, sheds light on little-known corners of the building’s history, introduces many of the characters and organizations that intersected with its history, and shows how Detroit, Orchestra Hall, and the DSO all share the same destiny. CENTENNIAL PROGRAMMING

The DSO launched its 2019-2020 season on October 4-6 with a special program restaging the powerhouse Orchestra Hall opening concert from 1919. Michael Francis conducted Weber’s Overture to Oberon, Mozart’s Double Piano Concerto in E-flat Major with Christina and Michelle Naughton, Bach’s Triple Piano Concerto in C Major with the Naughtons and David Fung, and Beethoven’s immortal Fifth Symphony. DESTINY

Throughout the fall and the first part of 2020, the DSO presented other special programming connected to 100 years of Orchestra Hall. The hall’s past as a jazz venue was feted through concerts in the 20th anniversary, namesake Paradise Jazz Series, including The Music of Louis Armstrong, who opened the venue in 1941, a program by the Duke Ellington Orchestra, which performed just four weeks after

MICHAEL FRANCIS

the Paradise opened, and the Branford Marsalis Quartet. Major classical works performed during Orchestra Hall’s inaugural season were presented, including Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique, Schubert’s Symphony No. 9, “The Great,” and more. A special Young People’s Family Concert called “The Ghost of Orchestra Hall” paid tribute to the hall’s history through a visit by the friendly ghost of Ossip Gabrilowitsch. ORCHESTRA HALL DAY The DSO celebrated the 100th birthday of Orchestra Hall on October 23, 2019, with a free concert titled A Century of Pops, which included music from the first pops concert performed at the hall as well as selections from a century of orchestral pops music. Mayor Mike Duggan kicked off the festivities by reading a proclamation naming October 23 to be “Orchestra Hall Day” in Detroit in recognition of its central role in the cultural life of the city. The concert was conducted by former DSO resident conductor Leslie B. Dunner and featured cellist Abraham Feder (DSO Assistant Principal Cello, Dorothy and Herbert Graebner Chair) and mezzo-soprano Danielle Wright. Throughout the day, tours of Orchestra Hall were enjoyed by the public, and a string quartet composed of students in the Civic Youth Ensembles performed pre-concert.

PARADISE JAZZ SERIES

PARTNERSHIPS The DSO partnered with Detroit Public Television to produce “Orchestra Hall—A Centennial Celebration,” a series of six webisodes that serialized the story of Orchestra Hall. Released weekly across DPTV’s broadcast and social media platforms, including WRCJ 90.9 FM, beginning in October 2019 to coincide with the centennial, they were compiled in a culminating television event featuring the full documentary in December. In June 2020, the documentary was awarded a Michigan Emmy for best Historic / Cultural Program or Special. In partnership with the Detroit Historical Society (DHS), the DSO presented a joint exhibition of photos, artifacts, and interactive experiences tracing the history of Orchestra Hall. The DSO’s exhibition launched in October with a special treat: auto titan Horace Dodge’s personal 1920 Dodge Model 30 two-door coupe. As an early supporter and financier of the DSO, Dodge may have driven to concerts at Orchestra Hall in this very car. Throughout fall 2019, the exhibit expanded into several locations at The Max including the Paradise Lounge and the John and Marlene Boll Green Room, and in January, the Detroit Historical Museum opened its own exhibition in the Robert and Mary Ann Bury Community Gallery.

“ORCHESTRA HALL– A CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION”

NEW YORK TIMES: ORCHESTRAS AND ART MUSEUMS

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in spring 2020 brought the DSO and DHS together once again to conceptualize bringing the Orchestra Hall exhibit online with a special updated digital exhibition. Premiered on Facebook Live in July 2020, “Detroit’s Orchestra Hall—A Virtual Exhibition” captures the magic and feel of walking through the original, in-person exhibit by retaining the artifacts and narrative, while also offering a present-day perspective. Detroit Month of Design and the DSO partnered to present a Centenary Sound Lab that explored what makes the sound of Orchestra Hall so appealing and why it’s important for communities to save and restore historic buildings for cultural enrichment. Acousticians from HEAD acoustics and Jaffe Holden offered a scientific perspective to support the claim of Orchestra Hall being one of the top concert halls in the world. The DSO also partnered with the Detroit Bus Company to offer bus tours of three of C. Howard Crane’s Detroit theaters: Orchestra Hall, the Detroit Opera House, and The Fillmore Detroit.

2019 | 2020 ANNUAL REPORT

THE JADER BIGNAMINI ERA BEGINS On January 22, 2020, Chairman Mark Davidoff and President & CEO Anne Parsons announced that Italian conductor Jader Bignamini had been selected as the next music director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, following a years-long search and careful, deliberative work done by a search committee. This historic news was shared with DSO musicians, staff, and members of the board of directors at the top of the first rehearsal for that weekend’s performances of Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique, which Jader was in Detroit to conduct. Jader Bignamini was first introduced to Detroit audiences when he memorably stepped in for then-Music Director Leonard Slatkin to close the 2017-18 season with concert performances of Puccini’s Turandot. His chemistry with DSO musicians was evident to those who heard or were part of those concerts and knew that they had witnessed something truly special. That bond between conductor and orchestra was reaffirmed when Jader returned in October 2019 to lead performances of Mahler’s Fourth Symphony.

WATCH: DETROIT WELCOMES JADER

The announcement of Jader as the DSO’s next music director was met with front-page news coverage and widespread public appreciation, including thunderous ovations at that week’s concerts. A public celebration of the appointment at Beacon Park in partnership with DTE Energy and DTE Foundation was attended by hundreds as the Detroit community officially welcomed its new music director.

EDUCATION & COMMUNITY The training programs of the Wu Family Academy welcomed over 500 students into its Civic Youth Ensembles (CYE) in the 2019-2020 season. Early-season highlights by the Detroit Symphony Youth Orchestra, CYE’s premier ensemble, included its annual Nutcracker holiday performance at the Ford Community & Performing Arts Center in Dearborn, and a special partnership with Michigan Opera Theatre’s Studio Artists program in which four singers rehearsed and performed with DSYO, giving these young players an opportunity to perform operatic repertoire for the first time. After the COVID-19 pandemic made in person training opportunities impossible, DSO staff, musicians, and CYE faculty continued to work with these young musicians virtually in an impromptu summer session that included delivering instruments into the hands of students enrolled in our Detroit Public Schools Community District school-based ensembles. Also over the summer, the Wu Family Academy began to prepare for the 50th anniversary of CYE throughout 2021, hosting several virtual alumni reunions and town halls.

13

After successfully launching its sold-out Educational Concert Series in the fall, the DSO was unable to present the other two programs scheduled for the season, due first to a snow day for local schools and then to the pandemic. In lieu of being able to host classrooms at Orchestra Hall, the DSO rapidly began to present Educational Watch Parties, specially curated from the DSO webcast archives, on Facebook Live and dso.org. The DSO also created special music education infographics, sharing them with educators on Pinterest to aid them in providing remote learning. For the ninth consecutive year, the DSO performed four free community concerts to kick off its new season at venues across Metro Detroit, presented by DTE Energy Foundation. These performances in September 2019 took place in Detroit, Dearborn, Monroe, and East China. The DSO also presented chamber recitals at intimate and unexpected venues across Detroit during the first half of the season, including churches and community spaces like the Durfee Innovation Society in Detroit’s Dexter-Linwood neighborhood and the laundromat / coffee shop The Commons on the east side.

READ: DTE COMMUNITY CONCERTS

Once the COVID-19 pandemic took shape, the DSO maintained connections with 17 community partners to offer over 100 activities featuring 65 DSO musicians in a variety of virtual programming. Highlights included a partnership with Henry Ford Health System and Michigan Opera Theatre to offer monthly hour-long virtual musical performances to Henry Ford Cancer Institute patients receiving treatment via the David DiChiera Music Therapy Program; monthly virtual performances in partnership with Alzheimer’s Association for Community Connect Program participants; a special joint program of music from comic books with The Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation; and pre-recorded “Musician Moments” videos that Beaumont Health patients could access in their hospital rooms; and weekly virtual sessions between DSO musicians and clients of Kadima Mental Health Services with support of music therapists. THE CUBE AND @ THE MAX On December 7, 2019, all four performance spaces at The Max were activated with concurrent events for the first time in history: the DSO in Orchestra Hall; Grammy Award-winning band Ranky Tanky in The Cube; Detroit Public Theatre in Allesee Hall; and a whole host of events celebrating Detroit’s annual Noel Night in Sosnick Courtyard and its environs including holiday carolers and a live ice sculpture demonstration. Om @ The Max Yoga, our wildly popular yoga and live music experience featuring chamber music by DSO musicians and led by DSO librarian Ethan Allen, launched an official subscription series in the Peter D. and Julie F. Cummings Cube. Other highlights included six sold-out events: Nosferatu + Live Music, The Hot Sardines, Storm Large, Poetry Slam, Om @ The Max and Cyrille Aimée, and back-to-back film screenings of Jordan Peele’s Get Out and Us plus a talk by award-winning author and UCLA professor Tananarive Due, who discussed the history of Black Horror and explored themes covered in Get Out.

#KEEPTHEM 2019 | 2020 ANNUAL REPORT #KEEPTHEMUSICPLAYING

Music is courageous, unifying, powerful, and calming, and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra won’t let it be silenced in times of uncertainty. Even though the DSO wasn’t on stage for much of the year, we were committed to sharing music with you wherever you are. With technology in our DNA, the DSO navigated new pathways to #KeepTheMusicPlaying.

OM @ HOME

DSO REPLAY & WATCH PARTIES

Immediately following Michigan’s stay at home order in March, we opened our on-demand DSO Replay archive of Live from Orchestra Hall and Classroom Edition webcasts—usually accessed via $50 donation—to bring free music into the homes of audiences unable to attend concerts in person. To foster community and continue engaging with patrons, we launched DSO Watch Parties on Facebook (also shown on dso.org), where fans could hear from musician hosts and chat live with the orchestra and other audience members during the program. Spanning Classical, Pops, Educational, Family, and more, 59 Watch Parties were presented from March to August. Om @ The Max was also reimagined for the virtual space with once-monthly Om @ Home yoga sessions led by DSO Music Librarian Ethan Allen and soundtracks provided by the orchestra.

FROM OUR PORCHES... AND YOURS PLAY ON YOUR PORCH

When the world’s stages closed this spring, we invited musicians everywhere to perform for a virtual audience right from their front porches with the #PlayOnYourPorch campaign. Hundreds of community members from around the world responded and we shared their porch sessions—and sessions from DSO orchestra members—with our social media followers daily at 6 p.m. ET. DSO musicians also regularly recorded themselves playing in other areas of their homes, including living rooms, kitchens, and garages.

BETWEEN 2 STANDS

BETWEEN 2 STANDS

Monday nights became something to look forward to with new episodes of Between 2 Stands airing weekly. Created and hosted by orchestra members Abraham Feder (Assistant Principal Cello), Andrés Pichardo-Rosenthal (Assistant Principal Percussion), and Scott Strong (Horn), the web series was an opportunity to connect viewers with musicians by taking audiences on a candid journey inside the musicians’ lives. We also hosted two live tapings with a branded B2S set in our Sosnick Courtyard in front of a limited-capacity, socially distanced live studio audience. Now in its second season, the hit program airs twice monthly on Facebook and YouTube.

VIRTUAL EDUCATION INITIATIVES With The Max closed for social distancing we stayed connected with students enrolled in our Civic Youth Ensembles, including our school-based ensembles, keeping them focused on routine and helping them stay in playing shape with online learning. On Saturday mornings, we also shared CYE @ Home episodes on Facebook, during which all music students could follow along with instructors from the Wu Family Academy and orchestra members as they provided quick lessons and insight for practice.

CYE AT HOME

When Interlochen Center for the Arts faced a radically adjusted summer season, DSO musicians spent three weeks working with students at their virtual summer camp. In July, DSO musicians launched their own DSO Summer Institute. Run by DSO musicians, the Summer Institute was designed to give college-age and pre-professional musicians who lost other summer opportunities a chance to work with members of the orchestra. From a pool of 380 incredibly talented applicants, our virtual festival welcomed 113 participants from diverse backgrounds into our family for a week.

PARTNERSHIPS The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation provided sponsorship support for Spirit of Detroit: A Symphony of the People. This project united 56 DSO musicians and 193 community instrumentalists and vocalists in a virtual ensemble performing the central theme from Gustav Holst’s “Jupiter” from The Planets—arranged by DSO cellist SPIRIT OF DETROIT

MUSICPLAYING

Jeremy Crosmer with lyrics by Meaghan Heinrich and conducted by Music Director Jader Bignamini. The resulting video has been viewed 127,800 times on Facebook.   The DSO partnered with The Henry Ford and WDIV-Local 4 to produce the 28th Salute to America: an hour-long primetime program filled with all the music and fanfare for which the annual concerts are known and loved.

OUTDOOR PROGRAMMING IN SOSNICK COURTYARD AND AROUND DETROIT

After five months without concerts, the warm weather brought the opportunity to present safe, socially distanced, live, outdoor music in Sosnick Courtyard. From August through October, the DSO offered 30 limited-capacity socially distanced live music experiences for 1,600 patrons—an increase of 21 events compared to our summer 2019 season. These “Summer Sessions” included outdoor chamber music performances (three webcasts), yoga + live music experiences; film screenings with live music; jazz and family concerts; and exclusive donor events. All events that featured DSO musicians were free and open to the public thanks to generous support from John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, League of American Orchestra Future’s Fund, and our 2019-2020 series sponsors. We also brought live chamber ensembles to Robert C. Valade Park, the Dequindre Cut Freight Yard, Gabriel Richard Park, and Clark Park and collaborated with the Downtown Detroit Partnership to simulcast Wednesday night chamber concerts in Campus Martius Park. These performances were generously supported by General Motors. DSO musicians also returned to Edsel and Eleanor Ford House in Grosse Pointe for an evening of outdoor music.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION AT THE DSO In early June, amid the civil unres t taking place across the countr y, the DSO made a s tatement in suppor t of Black Lives Mat ter. With s taf f, musicians, and board leadership in alignment, it was impor tant to clearly communicate the DSO’s beliefs, intentions, and plans at this moment of crisis in our community and across our nation. The DSO has been inves ted in diversity, equity, and inclusion for decades, and people look to the orches tra to take a leadership role. From the music and ar tis ts on s tage to iconic boardroom and community leadership from the late Dr. Ar thur L . Johnson and the Honorable Damon J. Keith, the DSO has demons trated the immense role ar ts and culture can play in bridging dif ferences and connec ting people. In 2014, the DSO launched its Diversity & Inclusion Task Force, chaired by Shirley Stancato, and in 2018 elevated the Task Force to a board -level commit tee. This followed a year in which the DSO developed a Social Progress Initiative: A commitment to continuous dialogue and ac tion that leverages the power of music to improve the quality of life for all people of greater Detroit. This impor tant work led direc tly into the development of our Detroit Strategy, which can be seen through two primar y means: •

Detroit Harmony, a scalable and sus tainable city wide collaboration to improve child development through music education and ar ts- based learning while also growing economic oppor tunity by employing Detroiters in the provision of ins truments and music educa tion.

And the Detroit Neighborhood Initiative: A measurable, community- driven process of dialogue and planning, resulting in cultural par tnerships that enrich the community, and musical experiences that align with the priorities of Detroit residents.

In addition, beginning in 2019 and continuing extensively this year, the DSO has been developing a comprehensive DEI s trategy to make DEI a fun damental value that impac ts and benefits ever y DSO cons tituenc y. The DSO is excited to share this work more completely in the nex t year. Even though we are proud of our successes, one thing is clear: Our DEI work is ongoing and not something that we will ever really “finish.” In ever ything we do, we want to provide ar tis tic excellence in meaningful and authentic ways. We also want to inspire people and be ac tive lis teners in our community. A s we said in June: We unders tand the value of lis tening.

ADVANCEMENT AND SPECIAL EVENT HIGHLIGHTS RESILIENCE FUND

THE DSO RESILIENCE FUND

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the DSO’s Board of Directors launched and led an emergency impact fund that ultimately raised $1.58 million during both its private and public phases. The Resilience Fund filled gaps left by a variety of lost revenue sources and allowed our talented musicians to keep the music playing during their time away from the stage; empowered our youth to use music as a creative outlet during times of need and times of joy; and enabled our emergence as a vibrant and impactful organization when it was possible to return to the stage. We thank all those who went above and beyond to support this urgent need.

SECURING OUR FUTURE THROUGH ENDOWMENT GROWTH Dedicated to advancing William “Bill” Davidson’s legacy of philanthropic giving, the William Davidson Foundation made a transformative $15 million investment in the DSO in 2017. Up to $5 million of its grant was designated as a 1:1 match towards new gifts pledged and received between 2018 and 2023 to the DSO’s permanent endowment. Thanks to the generosity of donors at all levels, we have secured commitments two years ahead of schedule for all $5 million required to fully meet the matching challenge!

WILLIAM DAVIDSON NEIGHBORHOOD SERIES

As of August 31, 2020, all DSO and third-party controlled endowment funds are valued at more than $57 million. An additional $21 million has been pledged but not yet received, including $15 million in known testamentary giving, valuing the DSO’s perpetual capital at $78 million after the fulfillment of all current commitments.

CLASSICAL ROOTS The 42nd annual Arthur L. Johnson and Honorable Damon Jerome Keith Classical Roots Celebration raised a record $385,000 to support DSO programs that aim to celebrate and create more opportunities for African Americans in classical music. The 2020 Honorees were Chacona Baugh, former DSO Board of Directors member and advocate for and benefactor of the Classical Roots mission, and André Watts, the celebrated pianist and educator.

HONOREE ANDRÉ WATTS

The concert was conducted by Thomas Wilkins and featured pianist Terrence Wilson and the Brazeal Dennard Chorale, a touchstone of every Classical Roots concert since 1978. Classical Roots Composer-in-Residence Nkeiru Okoye’s DSO-commissioned work Black Bottom had its world premiere.  Black Bottom references the people and music of Detroit’s historic Black Bottom neighborhood. During a research visit to Detroit, Nkeiru found inspiration in the Black Bottom Street View exhibition, which was then brought to the William Davidson Atrium and was on display for patrons to experience from February through March. Community outreach included school visits by Okoye and DSO African American Fellow Michael Gause; a Classical Roots Chamber Recital at the Plymouth United Church of Christ; and a lecture given by Okoye to the membership of the Detroit Association of Women’s Clubs, which she directly references in the eighth section of Black Bottom, “5461 Brush Street,” the association’s address. Michigan House Representative Isaac Robinson attended the event to deliver a tribute certificate from the State of Michigan that read: “It is an honor to acknowledge award-winning composer Nkeiru Okoye for her extraordinary contributions to the history of Detroit, Michigan.”

HONOREE CHACONA BAUGH

DECANTED @ THE DSO The newly launched Decanted @ the DSO was held at The Max on November 14, 2019, and was a beautiful evening with incredible wines, music, and community. We’re so grateful for the leadership support of our Decanted Executive Chairs Carolynn and Aaron Frankel,

DSO musicians who performed at the event were violinist Sheryl Hwangbo, cellist David LeDoux, clarinetist Shannon Orme, horn player David Everson, trombonists Kenneth Thompkins and Randy Hawes, and percussionist Andrés Pichardo-Rosenthal. Thanks to all who participated to make the evening a success.

LEADERSHIP GIFTS The DSO celebrates Mr. & Mrs. James B. Nicholson, Mr. & Mrs. Stanley Frankel, Mr. & Mrs. Lee Barthel, Penny & Harold Blumenstein, Julie & Peter Cummings, Mr. & Mrs. Peter Karmanos, Jr., Linda Dresner & Ed Levy, Jr., and Mrs. Richard C. Van Dusen for their steadfast investments in the institution’s financial sustainability.

DECANTED AT THE DSO

During opening weekend of the 2019-2020 season, the DSO celebrated oneDSO leadership gifts from Director Emeritus Bonnie Larson and Chairman Emeritus Peter D. and Julie F. Cummings. The DSO also honored Board of Trustees Chair Ric and Carola Huttenlocher, Trustee Ric Sonenklar and Greg Haynes, Directors Emeriti Honorable Avern and Lois Cohn, Chairman Emeritus Phillip Wm. and Lauren Fisher, and DSO musicians for their commitment to the DSO Musicians’ Fund for Artistic Excellence. On February 18, the DSO hosted DTE leadership at Orchestra Hall to express gratitude for their support of the oneDSO campaign and Orchestra Hall centennial. DTE has remained one of the most consistent corporate sponsors of the DSO, including most recently with a multi-million-dollar campaign gift. As a token of appreciation, we presented them with an original hand-blown glass sculpture designed by April Wagner (Epiphany Studios).

BONNIE LARSON - DIRECTOR EMERITA

EDUCATION & COMMUNITY PARTNERS Investments in the strategic planning phase of Detroit Harmony were made possible by the Max M. and Marjorie S. Fisher Foundation and the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation, bringing the DSO closer to its goal of placing an instrument in the hands of every student in Detroit and enabling the DSO to hire Damien Crutcher as the program’s Managing Director. The Ford Foundation expanded its long-standing partnership with the DSO in order to create positive change in the lives of Detroit students and community members through specialized, world-class music education programming. Spotlighting Detroit visual artists, Art @ The Max VI was made possible with generous support from the Applebaum Family Philanthropy. Later in the season, we launched the first Virtual Art @ The Max exhibition.

PETER D. CUMMINGS - CHAIRMAN EMERITUS

The FCA Foundation continued their support of programming for veterans, active military, and their families, and initiated support of Civic Youth Ensemble and Educational Concert Series programming. Thanks to the very generous support from Rocket Community Fund, the DSO, Wu-Tang producer and rapper RZA, and members of Wu-Tang Clan joined forces to announce a first-of-its-kind concert at Orchestra Hall, originally scheduled for March 21 and 22, 2020. Unfortunately, the concerts were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Making these groundbreaking concerts happen safely is a top priority for the DSO, RZA, Wu-Tang Clan, and Rocket Community Fund. These concerts are currently scheduled for May 2021. Made possible by a generous grant from the William Davidson Foundation, the DSO presented its ninth consecutive season of the William Davidson Neighborhood Concert Series, bringing music to eight surrounding communities: Southfield, Clinton Township, Beverly Hills, West Bloomfield, Plymouth, Bloomfield Hills, Grosse Point, and a new venue—the Meyer Theater—in Monroe. The DSO Classical Series is generously sponsored by PVS Chemicals, Inc. The title sponsor of the DSO’s PNC Pops Series is PNC Bank, and the series is presented by Masco Corporation Foundation, with additional support from the Greektown Casino-Hotel. The Paradise Jazz Series is sponsored by General Motors with additional support from MGM Grand Detroit and TCF Bank.
