‘Artist Laudabilis’ (by the Award Committee of the Europa Authentica,) and the overall winner of the head-to-head competition of the Saatchi Gallery in London, Dubravka is an artist that has a thorough command of the painting-on-glass technique. Having been developing this ancient technique into a distinctive style, in her own words, her work is surreal with impressionist elements and contains a considerable amount of symbolism. Each painting tells its own unique story. The combination of oil a special intense effect.”

A PERSONAL APPEAL BY THE CURATOR I am proud to offer the Sixth Volume of ; a document of what is happening in art in the 21st century worldwide, an amazing selection of art, a pleasure to the eye of the beholder! Artistic creations have multiple sides but mainly the artists are trying to show the world their own feelings: their pain, their struggles, their own way of seeing things, their fears, their concerns, their own world, their own truth! Besides all its other purposes, art is the only thing that is created for the pleasure of the eye; to make the world more beautiful, - and it really does! Imagine the world without music, without sculpture, without paintings! How would it be? Gray maybe… Art has existed since human beings appeared on Earth. Cavemen would draw on cave walls with every an urgent need for people to express their inner self. different concepts. The unity is in the range of differences. Abstraction, realism, surrealism, photodigital, photography, 3D mixed media, sculpture, installations; every kind of different expression. Let’s enjoy what we see in this book, no matter if everybody sees it differently. You might notice that the color red dominates in this book. It is my favorite color! Despina Tunberg Curator

INTRO TO VOLUME VI OF INTERNATIONAL CONTEMPORARY MASTERS It is with great pleasure that I introduce Volume 6 of When we started this endeavour six years ago, we were a little intimidated by the scope of our undertaking. To create a chronicle, from year

This is not to say that reviews, criticism and publicity no longer play a role, but more and more, anything goes. Still, while on the one hand, art has become less constrained and more “liberated,” the path for artists has in many ways become more

audacious. But now with six volumes of the series in print and a positive response that has surpassed our most optimistic expectations, we are beginning to be convinced that we are standing on solid ground.

kind, so distinguishing oneself is less easy. But the weakening of standards and judgment has also made recognition more

Over a thousand artists have been featured in the series, from most of the countries of the world. The series is becoming a source book for the art of the 21st century. It is interesting to note that more and more libraries are acquiring the series.

We have tried in the compilation of this series of books to follow this trend. We have only two very elementary criteria for inclusion: there has to be a certain originality in the artist’s work – something that is different, or in some way arresting – and

When we started the series, we were guided in our approach by the observation that there are no real “centers” of artistic activity any more, nor any prevalence of any school or genre, not even any tendency beyond an ever-increasing diversity. So we endeavoured to simply record as much as we could of this diversity, without embracing any particular approach, and to allow each reader to draw her or his own conclusions, without any editorialization on our part. We feel this approach has been vindicated, but there are some interesting implications. Because art has become so much more protean, and in a way, democratic, the authority of critics, curators, art historians and institutions in general has become correspondingly diminished – arbiters of taste are going the way of the dinosaurs.

or media the artist chooses to work in. Beyond this, we do not pass judgment. Rather, we see ourselves as just presenters and chroniclers. While these books are certainly accessible to the general public – and their worth would be limited if they were not – we also aim to reach a “professional” audience of gallerists, curators, critics, collectors, etc. But our approach is simply to present a cross-section of what is out there, all over the world. Clearly, we cannot show the work of every worthy artist, especially in one volume. But taken as a whole, the series is encompassing an ever larger and more varied range, and taken as a whole, we believe that the picture of a whole world of art is becoming more apparent. Hope found her place working as a contemporary artist, always aiming to achieve a middle ground between abstraction and realism, yet often leaning toward pure abstraction. Her use of color and distinctive textures evoke a unique feeling. Over the years, she has worked in oils and acrylics, having now come to use acrylics exclusively. Hope has participated in many group exhibitions and had solo shows. “I often can be found in my studio working on many pieces simultaneously. My medium of choice is acrylics due to the fast drying time; it keeps up with my pace. There is simply so much beauty here in Bayou country: the landscape, the people, the overall attitude. Rosa Olivo

There is a strong sense of cohesion and unity in Olivo’s work. Perhaps the most impressive aspect, one which unites the paintings, is her ability to create an aura of light. Many of her works seem to glow from within. Those areas of light lead the viewer’s eye through each image, providing a framework that draws us into the world that is being created, one that Olivo refers to as “a land of surprises.”

MARINA ALDEGHERI

MARINA ALDEGHERI “In my heart there is a great love for art in general and especially for painting. Watercolor, oil, acrylic; with a brush in my hand I feel happy. I try, I think, I observe, and then my creation is born from the heart. The smell of turpentine and oil paints absorb me and make me forget everything and everyone. I experiment to express the very best, always looking for something... tive, abstract painting l feel complete. My mind and my hands, passing from one emotion to another without conditions by anyone, the works that I paint are just me.”

“Painting is my master. Time in the timeless and vice versa is the mainspring of my creations. Painting is my master, the force which urges me to take the brush and convey, through it, the existence of an absolute that I feel deep inside. Without such a certainty, no music would be born in me, no picture would emerge. My desire is for each new work to be original and different from past creations, for I cannot conceive one work transcribing the same emotions as the previous one; that is the reason why I use as well acrylic as oil, pastel or India ink on various supports such as paper, canvas or wood. The art critic Francis Parent has characterized my work as lying “at the limits

AmbosS (aka STEVE ZAUGG)

“In my surreal and symbolic paintings I convey messages; messages that are not easily understood by everyone. Sometimes they are thought-provoking messages, messages that frighten. This is the view of our world through my eyes, that of AmbosS. I create irrational worlds. Here reality exists as a paradoxical universe, showing that there exist other realities behind the horizon of the human mind. I’m not real and yet I exist. I live in my own world. I’m different, I’m AmbosS.”

“I am a metal sculptor whose current work takes the form of high bas-relief, though still occasionally create intimately scaled sculpture. In these reliefs I join a botanical with a domestic human-based scene. Each botanical cultural identity, be it mythical, medicinal, or coming from their social usage. Each domestic scene relates to the a puzzle that takes its full meaning when the viewer’s own experiences are added. I am a trained metalsmith/silversmith with 30 years of experience. I fabricate these deep reliefs of hammer-formed metal tolerances of jewelry, where I began as an artist. The full-scale sculptures are raised and fabricated as traditional silversmithing but with expressive rather than functional/decorative ends.”

“I believe we can change our lives (and the world) any day we want to. Where the mind meets the inner eye, new worlds starts to exist. My world unites the beauty of Nature and the richness of emotional essence. Every time I create I am so curious to see what adventures my hands will unfold. I have this spectacular experience where my soul fragments are being pulled together, forming a new born aspect, a world, a symbolic baby, that my artwork gets to embody. I wish for everyone to experience that kind of creative suffering and ecstasy. If people would choose to take on that journey of discovery, I believe the world would be formed to a more soulful, intelligent and beautiful place.”

New Zone Gallery Artist Collective. “I love rich, vibrant colors, curvilinear shapes, and geometric patterns. My inspiration comes from the incredible beauty of nature and the divine energy that infuses all that is. My oil paintings are predominantly abstract, though I do paint whatever inspires me in the moment. I use a variety of brushes to attain an ethereal softness, and I contrast that with the sharp bold strokes of a palette in a state of pure positive emotion, infusing uplifting energy into my art work so that you feel good and so that your imagination transports you somewhere wonderful.

In terms of a globalized plateau that is full of variety and difference, their work can be seen as a, “satirical or purely scenic, to be contemplated at will.” Some of their works are a shout out against discrimination while at the same time paying indelible homage to beauty.

The Most Important World Leaders of the 20th Century by MONIQUE De RAE Summary of the story told by The Blue-eyed Lady

I’ve always been a pretty lawabiding kind of girl. It’s not that I just blindly did what my parents or teachers told me to do, but as a rule I did think they were right. Even after Nixon and Mao Zedong, I still always had the feeling that the world was in safe hands. After all, men like that had the smartest advisors, the most brilliant generals and professors from Harvard who had won Nobel prizes or studied until their hair had fallen out. As far as I could see, our future was rosy. We could sleep soundly in our beds. So it was a long time before doubt began to creep into my heart. The reason? The worldwide banking crisis. Once again, the world’s leaders would have to show that they were up to the job ... They were following in the footsteps of great men, such as Mohandas Gandhi. It was thanks to him that India won its independence in 1947. Combined with his defence of the rights of the poor, this won him the nickname Mahatma (“great soul”). His namesake, Indira leader. Her efforts to achieve economic independence and a growing contribution by women to politics and society, plus her environmental policy, swelled her popularity. Another strong woman was Golda Meir. Her commitment to peace in the Middle East was universally recognised. 126

He used his rhetorical skills to rally Europe during the turbulent wartime years. He is considered to be the greatest Briton of all time. Another great leader was Mikhail Gorbachev. He was famous above all for his policy of liberalisation, throwing the Soviet Union wide open to free dealings with the West and thereby actually bringing the Cold War to an end.

LISA FALK diploma in Graphic Design. When she moved to Tasmania she began creating drawings of the state’s natural areas and wilderness. The artist works with studio quality coloured pencils layered on 100% cotton rag paper. It is an unforgiving process allowing very little margin for error since erasure becomes virtually impossible, as the colours are built up to the resulting rich depths. Each drawing takes months to complete. The result is a body of work of exceptional virtuosity, clarity and power.

The rock revealed itself as a jewel; an interconnecting essence of undivided wholeness – absolute awareness. Through one-pointed concentration and ‘in’-sight I discovered the honing of skill to be a powerful tool for self-knowledge, integration, and the evolution and expansion of consciousness - the realms of integral, transpersonal, and ecopsychology. Being integrated one works in a sacred manner. Once the ego lets go the art becomes effortless, serving purely the task at hand. AHMED FARID Born, 1950, in Cairo, Egypt, where he currently lives and works, Ahmed Farid is one of the very many self-taught Egyptian painters who trained privately in apprenticeship at established artists’ studios. With a degree in Social Sciences and an early career in marketing communication and business, Farid’s encounter with painting came through extensive travels in the early seventies; an era that he lived fully, with its European post-May of 1968 culture, its American summer of love and Woodstock repercussions, and above all, its local Egyptian political and social effervescence. Perhaps this local and international concurrent cultural exposure left residues of desire to create the art he cherished and consumed, but was never able to practice except at a later stage in life, precisely in 2005. Inspired by few Egyptian artists such as Farouk Hosny and Hamdi Attia, and training with many Italian professional artists, Farid started to develop his own painterly personality. Farid possesses a brushstroke that is obsessed with textures and thick pastes of paints. The content of his canvases is many times reminiscent of the Egyptian abstract expressionist Gazebia Sirry or the European expressionist Nicholas de Steal. Ahmed Farid’s painting practice demonstrates a visual attraction to a kind of less textural American Color Field painting style.

GIANCARLO FLATI Born in Aquila, Giancarlo Flati was the winner of the Michetti Museum, 2005 award. According to Flati represents the world in its complexities, grasping the moment in which it and expanding in the euphony of space/time. In the works of Flati there are tangled woods, metallic nodes, electronic boards, broken glass, grains of sand, stones, and the nutshell sounds of Triton. Every element has the memory of the arpeggio of the forest, the lapping of the waves, the sounds of electronic machines, the inebriation of the wind meeting the clouds. studio in Central Falls. “I am a contemporary painter by context, but very traditional in the way I paint. I like to paint and draw everything and anything that is in front of me. That way the answer can always be found by looking at the subject. I am relieved when the subject is chosen, and am ready to start. I don’t have much interest in any part of the process that is not putting the brush to the canvas. For me, the real root is, and will always be, the action of using the paint to record or recreate an image and feeling. When I paint outside, or from a model, my observation time is limited by the sunset or the model leaving. I don’t mind the light changing or the model moving. This only leads to me depending on the true essence of the subject and how to attain that in other ways. In recent years I’ve painted extensively in Switzerland and Thailand, as well as France. Knowing that my time is limited puts a certain kind of pressure and acuteness on the experience. I seem to be able to tune in better. If it is a very short trip, as in Paris, I am able to take home with me a sense of the place and not have my own thoughts or emotions contaminate it. Over time, as I build a relationship to my surroundings and the new gets old, my feelings begin to override the initial impression.” Ballard Locks, Seattle Oil on wood 36 x 18 in. or 91 x 46 cm 162

Hart has received awards from the United Nations, she is an elected member of many notable organizations of achievement and her work is archived at the National Museum of Women in the Arts. The is deeply personal, but the stories are timelessly relevant. Hart’s iterative process of construction and deconstruction reveals the painting’s history, the artist’s journey and her ultimate belief in renewal. What is taken away leaves a footprint, contributing to the whole as much as what remains. Uncensored methods and use of materials give an intriguing, funky element. The work’s tactility is key to Hart balances the painting’s surface as much by touch, as by its visual components. the thick, rugged surfaces enhance the sense of a submerged narrative that lends the work much of its mystery, depth, and poetry.

something there to get me going again. I am always experimenting with new materials and methods. Sometimes the idea dictates what materials I will use and other times the materials will dictate the idea. I try to “show” rather than “tell” in my work. It is not narrative, it doesn’t tell a story. It is about experience and can be experienced differently by everyone who encounters it. Over time, the painting can be experienced differently by the individual viewer as well.

Bottom: Tropism VII Oil on canvas 30 x 22 in. or 76 x 56 cm

Size does not matter but scale does. Usually the image or the idea will let me know when the size is wrong. It is the same in literature; ideas that work as haiku poems do not make great epic Russian novels. I see quick sketches in charcoal or ink as haikus, large oils on canvas or linen are the ideas that need a novel to carry them. As the psychologist Carl Rodgers said, “That which is the most personal, is the most universal.” My work is inner driven, I am having a conversation with other artists through my work. I am just as interested in reading the biographies, writings and letters of artists as I am in their work. I want to know what they were thinking when they did the work. I want to get at their ideas and starting points and see where they take me anywhere from 10 to 500 years later. In that sense, all my works are self-portraits of what I am thinking and feeling. My responsibility is not to the audience but to the idea.” 178

LARYSA STRYGACZOWA “I have painted since I can remember. My graphics is a part of my own created world. Someone may say that it’s too romantic to be real, but nobody will say that our fantasy of the world should be as pragmatic as our everyday life. I am creating my own harmony of beauty, my own comfort zone. I am a dreamer who is trying to be a visionary…”

ANNA CARIN STEIN Born,1955, in Sweden, Anna Carin Stein now lives between Malmoe, Sweden and Tokyo, Japan. A member of SWEA Art International and multiple art societies, Stein exhibits regularly in European artfairs and galleries and her works have also been showcased at the Swedish Embassy in Tokyo. Stein has painted from an early age and always appreciated intuitive expression. “I trust my feeling that the pictures emanate from me, from my soul and this is what I want to show the world. People and nature are important to me, you can see that in all of my paintings.” Stein does not use paintbrushes and her works are made on Japanese paper.

Known for his masterful drawings and use of color, Paul Uyehara has been active in the Los Angeles art scene since the 1960s. He began studies at Chouinard Art School and Otis Art Institute. Most recently, he was mentored by the well-known, abstract painter Bonita Helmer. His works have been exhibited across the United States and in Europe. He married fellow artist, Elizabeth Maltbie Uyehara in 1975 and together they enjoyed a long and Paul is represented by Amsterdam Whitney Fine Art Gallery, NY.

“My early works were infused with skills developed as a draftsman and honed through years of life drawing and sculpting. I also focused on the literal beauty of still life, landscapes and the human form during this era. I spent years purely on the study of color, experimenting with tints, tones and hues and the effect of color placement. I have always been fascinated by Goya’s compositions. I return to them to study energy and movement in drawings and to translate these into modern idioms. In a series called ‘Deconstructions,’ I set these pieces free of all reference to subject matter, while adding vivid, often primary colors to black and white compositions, to re-imagine and reinterpret Goya’s concepts in purely abstract terms. The joy of colors in their purest forms has become my current focus and allows for the freedom of interpretation by any viewer.” Website: www.pauluyehara.com Email: pmizum@earthlink.net

RIEN VORGERS Rien Vörgers studied classic art in his home town, Enschede, The Netherlands, in the 1930s. Yet by the late 1970s he abandoned the style he was taught, in portraiture and landscapes, developing his own, original style of painting, in the footsteps of P. Mondrian and W. De Kooning. He was already approaching the age of 60 when invented his “mosaic” style. His technique does not include contours, nor shadows, over-run tones or perspective. Instead, every piece of colour lies against the next one, sometimes 20 tones in one painting, so that imaginary lines emerge. This innovation initiates, together with his richly connected register of colours, a remarkable visual power. Rien follows the implications of modern society in a critical manner, illustrating what that society entails and offering transparent solutions; such like the turtle tumbling under the weight of his mortgage. Rien participated in numerous fairs and exhibitions; one of which was especially organised for him during seven months in the Parliament buildings in The Hague in 2002/3. Rien was granted a Career Award from the town of Florence, Italy, when he took part in its 5th Biennale of International Contemporary Art in 2005, where Cristo was also present and received the same

I don’t think it can be limited to just one of those adjectives, and yet each one of them has an element of truth in it. sometimes creates a problem for the viewer, as often artists are categorized and presented to the public with a “label.” I am not a landscapist, a surrealist, or a realist etc., yet perhaps, I am all those things at the same time. The connection between the images I create is the approach to the composition, the way I treat the light, the emphasis on the unusual, the angle, the humorous sometimes… Each image tells a story and as such perhaps deserves the term descriptive or narrative. The landscapes for instance are not always an exact representation as I might add elements to it, which were seen only later on. As in the landscapes the other categories of images, are based on observation. An idea starts in my head, I follow it up by going sketching in public places, like museums, libraries, cafes, etc., which in turn feed my imagination, and steer me in a direction I had not always anticipated. It is a part of the work I really enjoy as it is a bit like going on an adventure, not knowing what’s at the end.”

NANCY YAKI “This body of work is concerned with how we, as observers and participants in the physical world around us, are constantly beckoned to see and feel our way into our surroundings. What each of these paintings represents is an invitation that the universe has extended - an invitation to dwell among the contours of the land, light and water - the elements that birthed us.” Nancy Yaki was born in 1960 in Connecticut, into a legacy of artisans. She earned national recognition for her painting while still in high school, and enrolled in Paier School of Art at age 17. After art school, Nancy migrated to Alaska, where a
