Amazon Kindle The Amazon Kindle, a portable reader that wirelessly downloads books, blogs, magazines and newspapers to a crisp, high-resolution electronic paper display that looks and reads like real paper, even in bright sunlight. More than 90,000 books are now available in the Kindle Store. Kindle retails in the USA for $399. “We’ve been working on Kindle for more than three years. Our top design objective was for Kindle to disappear in your hands so you can enjoy your reading,” said Jeff Bezos, Amazon.com Founder. “We also wanted to go beyond the physical book. Kindle is wireless, so whether you’re lying in bed or riding a train, you can think of a book, and have it in less than 60 seconds.

Download Content Wirelessly, no PC required, no hunting for Wi-Fi hot spots. The Kindle wireless delivery system, Amazon Whispernet, uses the same highspeed data network (EVDO) as advanced cell phones. Kindle uses a high-resolution display technology called electronic paper that provides a sharp black and white screen that is as easy to read as printed paper. The screen works using ink, just like books and newspapers, but displays the ink particles electronically. Final Cut Final Cut Express 4, a upgrade to Final Cut Pro 6. Ping-pong king Gaston Caba “His work typically utilizes vector-based cartoony characters, but each image takes the next step by switching up some detail so they’re extra-silly and delightful.” Gaston Caba (1978), freelance illustrator. Currently lives and works in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His work features worldwide in many exhibitions, websites, international magazines, plus some books like “Pictoplasma - The Character Encyclopaedia” (Pictoplasma Publishing), “Pictoplasma 2“ & “Tres Logos” (Die Gestalten Verlag), “Illustration Now 2″ (Taschen). He was member of Grupo Sorna, an eclectic bunch of writers & designers, where he developed a flash animation series named “Mundo Juanca“. Juanca´s characters design has been the main beloved characters in Gaston´s work. In 2005 he made up the “Ping-Pong Remix“ project, a big collaborative project in which he invited +70 of the best illustrators/ designers around the world to remix his ping-pong characters into original artworks. Soon he´ll launch his own fashion brand named “Gaston Custom” based on Hong Kong and distributed worldwide. He´s also

composer/singer for Flavia & the Motonets & part of the online-radio show “El Monte Análogo”. So you’re an illustrator, composer, singer and soon to be fashion label owner? Yes, I´m a multi-tasking human being. I do lots of things, I´m curious and I get bored very easy, so I need to manage different projects at the same time to keep the interest high. What was your first ever drawing? My first drawing sure was a little abstract, I can´t remember it. The first drawing I remember was a multicolored sun. My mother framed it and hanged it on a wall at home. I also remember doing lots of drawings of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, one of my most beloved characters of all times. What are the influences on your work? My greatest influences are from TV cartoons and cheap comics from my childhood. eg. Felix the Cat, E.T., Goofy, Tom & Jerry, Droopy, Garfield. As a teen/adult I enjoyed a lot Ren & Stimpy, Oh!Super Milk Chan, all of Jay Wards work (Rocky & Bullwinkle, Fractured Fairy Tales). What inspires your work?

Happiness & silly things from life. Are there any illustrators or designers that inspire you? Yes, I love the work of Otto Seibold, he was a great influence for me when I started my career as an illustrator. Whats with the wookie? This is a character I did with my chinese brush. I love to do silly abstract exercises with chinese ink, doing strokes all over the paper. A wookie is a nice way to do those excercises more figuratively. What has been the best / most fun project or client you’ve ever worked for? The most fun project till now was my last project at Tuen Mun Trend Plaza at Hong Kong. I did a X´Mas decoration and a solo exhibition with big clay toys, big prints and lots of artworks. I enjoyed a lot watching people not related to art or design at all taking pictures with the toys & the artworks. What is the biggest hurdle to overcome as an illustrator? Hideki Indaba Hideki Inaba has distinguished himself for following his instincts and expressing a personal sense of “now”. With his liberal style, free of outdated stereotype, the selftaught Tokyo-based designer and graphic artist has done work for Nike, Sony, Walt Disney, Levi’s and Kenzo. He is responsible for the distinctive look of the Gas Book series and the magazines SAL and +81. In 2004 he initiated the personal project

Newline, which sees the monthly creation of advertising graphics and T-shirts. In recent years, he contributed art works to Design Times Square: The Urban Forest Project and displayed his solo exhibition Graphic Line at the 24th birthday of cosmetic brand Shu Uemura. Kevin Russ Think you could make more than half a million Rand in less than 4 years – by taking photos? Kevin Russ has gone from a photography zero to hero overnight thanks to iStockphoto and a keen eye. He’s been a member since 2004, has over 9000 images on iStock and his work has been downloaded over 107 000 times. He quite humbly says thanks “to everyone who has bought my images I finally made it to 100K.” We asked him to share a few details about

his rise to iStock fame. “I was born in Santa Maria, California and lived in Arroyo Grande, California till I was 20. I live in Portland, Oregon now and have been here for the past 4½ years. Shortly after I moved to Portland I bought a Kodak point and shoot just for fun. Some of the first pictures I took were just of my roommate and a friend -since I was with them when I got the camera.” “For the first year and a half I used to be into shooting landscapes, nature and objects after that I found out about

iStockphoto and 6 months later I was doing iStock full time. I get inspired when I see other peoples pictures that appeal to me and my nature.” We didn’t have enough time or patience to browse through all 453 pages of his portfolio, but there are certainly a good couple of gems in there. The holy word Merkx+Girod architects were asked by the Dutch booksellers Selexyz to convert the interior of the former Dominican Church in Maastricht into a modern bookstore. For the same client M+G had previously designed two bookstores in the cities of The Hague and Almere. The unique location in Maastricht however asked for a very different approach. The store demanded 1.200 square meters of commercial area where only 750 were available. The initial idea of the client to install a second floor within the church was rejected by the designers, because this would completely destroy the spatial qualities of the church. The solution was found in the creation of monumental walk-in bookcase spanning several floors and situated a-symmetrically in the church. In doing so the left side of the church remained empty while on the other side customers are lead upstairs in the three storey ‘Bookflat.’ Climbing thus becomes an experience and the reward lies in the close encounter with the ancient murals and stunning views. The ‘bookflat’ is a clear contemporary gesture, an independent statement, that also pays hommage to the monumental church. The groundfloor gives room to several different book displays, information desks, magazine stands and cash registers, all made of standard sheet materials in different colours and surfaces. The former altar now houses the ‘Coffeelovers’ café with

a large central reading table shaped as a cross. What was the most difficult thing to design in this work ? By far the ‘bookflat’ because of its dimensions, construction, weight, precision, detailling, complex accumulation of functions (books, storage, stairs, elevator,workdesks, lighting etc) required safety regulations and, very important, its delicate lighting conditions. I guess that the lighting of the interior was very important, am I right? Yes you are, lighting was very crucial and played an important role in our design from the first day we started. Both natural light and artificial light are present in the church interior. The artificial light is designed to create a generally pleasant atmosphere. More precise lighting fixtures have been used in all parts of the church, and also in the large ‘bookcase’. All books are lit very well giving easy view from the top shelf to the bottom shelves to all customers. All lighting fixtures, including the one above the reading table in the former altar, have been designed especially by Merkx+Girod. Lighting advise was given by Hans Wolff & Partners from Amsterdam with whom M+G works very frequently. Additional advice, fixtures and technical detailing was realised in close collaboration with Ansorg. www.merkx-girod.nl

Green Label Art

MOUNTAIN DEW HAS LAUNCHED GREEN LABEL ART, A LIMITED EDITION SERIES OF COLLECTABLE ALUMINIUM BOTTLES DESIGNED BY A SELECT GROUP OF ARTISTS FROM THE WORLD OF CONTEMPORARY ART AND CULTURE. Green Label Art - Volume I includes six unique designs that will be distributed in limited quantities in early February through mid-March. Six designers, chosen from a mix of various disciplines including stencil art, watercolor, tattoo, graffiti and digital design, were invited to use a 16-oz aluminum bottle as their blank canvas to create their own expression of Mountain Dew. The 2008 Volume I artists include Chuck Anderson, Dez, Haze, Peat Wollaeger, Scott Lenhardt and Troy Denning. “The Mountain Dew brand is synonymous with individuality, self-expression and self-invention,” said Frank Cooper, VP of marketing, Mountain Dew. “The Green Label Art series brings these characteristics to life, offering artists a blank canvas to express themselves in a unique way that appeals to the irreverent Mountain Dew consumer.” Mountain Dew Green Label Art was first introduced in 2007 featuring 12 different bottle designs and was available only at select events in a limited number of markets. The current initiative features a website at www.greenlabelart.com that immerses visitors in the world of the Green Label Artists with downloads, galleries, event videos and behind the scenes video bios for each artist. He rose to the top of the 2007 Green Label Art design contest, competing against thousands of artists and designers for a spot on this year’s roster. Honing his style through involvement in his local hip hop scene, Dez is known for his work on everything from walls to Tshirts, sneakers and furniture. He has explored graffiti’s application through airbrush, old school caps and the computer. Now he can add one more canvas to his list: our aluminium bottles.

HAzE NEW YORK Eric Haze has been making an impact for over 30 years with creative influence in the worlds of art, product design and graphics. After spending the ‘70s and ‘80s on the front lines of the NYC graffiti movement, Haze opened his design studio in ’86 and went onto design classic logos for The Beastie Boys, LL Cool J, Public Enemy and MTV. PEAT WOLLAEGER ST. LOUIS Internationally known for his whimsical, raw and brightly colored stenciled characters, Peat started doing urban-influenced designs in the early ‘90s. Inspired by guerilla artist Banksy, he began using stencils and spray paint to reproduce his graphics. It quickly became his medium of choice. DEW became interested in Peat after seeing his imaginative viral videos where he portrays his stencil characters in costume. Peat is currently preparing a body of work for an exhibition in Melbourne. Peta Morrison Peta Morrison has been around the retail jewellery business her whole life. As a young girl she tried on the jewellery in her fathers shop like it was her own private jewellery box. She worked school holidays in the shop to make pocket money. Later she began working in the shop part-time while she finished her degree. Then one day her father, Vere Morrison, invited her to go on a buying trip with him to Thailand and Hongkong - to purchase loose gems. That was the turning point for her. “That trip really opened my mind up to the endless creativity the jewellery industry offered. I was fascinated by the wide and varied range of gems available on the international market” she says. The following year she headed for the States to study gemology and jewellery design at the Gemological Institute of America. her design lecturer was Bob Arends. Bob designed for Van Cleef and Arpels in Los Angeles for over 30 years. Talking about influences for her work she comments: “The principles he taught our class have proven to be invaluable in my career as a designer.Besides the design principles I learnt at the GIA, my dad Vere Morrison strongly influenced my designs. Of course my father has been designing jewellery for over 30 years and I can definitely see his influence in my work. He taught me, to a large degree, what makes the difference between a piece of jewellery that sits in the window and a piece that sells. What’s too flat, what’s too high, what size gems will work in a piece and all the other details that come with close to 50 years experience.” Now, some ten years later, having designed many stock items for Morrisons and many bespoke pieces using the treasured gems of clients, she feels she can truely call herself

a “Jewellery Designer”. Tell us about competing in the AngloGold Riches of Africa Design Competition? “Designing for competitions doesn’t come easily to me. When you’ve worked and designed in a retail setting it can be quite tricky to think out of the box. In retail, you are limited by the constraints common to every day life - wearability, practicality and budget. When you design for competitions, the organisers want designs that have imaginative, show-stopping appeal. Actually its quite liberating because one doesn’t often get that kind of opportunity in day to day work. The yellow gold “Liquid Sunshine” neckpiece was designed by myself and fashioned by Morrisons for the AngloGold Riches of Africa Design Competition 2002. The design was chosen out of a pool of 1200 designs. It took around three months to make and weighed a total of 593 grams - at today’s market that puts the gold value alone at over R100 000! The neckpiece was a favourite with the judges and it now forms part of AngloGold’s permanent collection. What inspires you? As for my inspiration, I find it everywhere. In nature. In architecture. In fact I was waiting while the mechanics fitted CV joints to my husbands car the one day and they had a part hanging on the wall that inspired a diamond cuff for a competition! The Liquid Sunshine neckpiece was inspired by a shampoo ad in a magazine. Strands of long hair rippling in the wind (or a large fan) inspired the asymetrical piece. Christoph Zellweger Christoph Zellweger is one of the most thought provoking and stimulating jewellery designers in Europe. Trained as a goldsmith in the 1980s, he worked in fine jewellery for several years in Switzerland before attending the Royal College of Art in London, where he graduated in 1993 with distinction. His approach to design is intuitive and

conceptual; it is about testing boundaries and exploring unfamiliar territories and thoughts. He holds a professorial research post at Sheffield Hallam University and lectures as well as running his studio. He recently directed the Pro Pueblo Sustainable Design project in Ecuador for the University of the Arts in Zurich. His work is represented in various muse-

ums and collections all over Europe and in North America. He has received numerous international prizes including the Swiss Federal Prize for Design three times. How do you create refrigeration where there is no electricity, where temperatures top 44°C and where dust-laden winds sweep the landscape for much of the year? The answer is the desert refrigerator. Designed by Mohammed Bah Abba, this system of two earthenware pots, one within the other and separated by wet sand, was inspired by ancient evaporation knowledge. The desert refrigerator is able to keep fruits, vegetables and drinks fresh for days in arid climates and has transformed the lives of thousands of people on the African continent in the process.

Buyers flock to Design Indaba Expo Design Indaba Expo 2008 has already preregistered more than 160 local and international buyers. With still a month to go before the event, this is a significant increase on 2007, which recorded 112 buyers at the final event. Of these buyers, 76 are local buyers and 74 international buyers from countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, The Netherlands, South Korea and Dubai. A further 13 buyers have registered specifically for the jewellery showcase. “The Expo is a fantastic opportunity for international buyers to meet the designers and see the products beautifully displayed. It’s also great to see new designers and products that are out there. Designers have a goal to work towards the Indaba and then to present the work in a complete way. Work takes on a new light when beautifully displayed on a stand. The Design Indaba Expo has come of age, it feels grown-up in size,” said Expo jewellery curator and buyer Jennifer Fair after a satisfied buying experience last year. Featuring only original, contemporary and innovative products made and conceived in South Africa, the Design Indaba Expo has been the quintessential showcase of local creative products for five years. Annually growing in reputation and scope, the Expo has recorded exponential growth in both buyers and visitors with more than 20 000 visitors and 112 buyers last year. Longstanding Design Indaba partner, the Department of Trade and Industry also acknowledges the economic potential of encouraging international awareness of South African creative products. This year, the dti are sponsoring 20 buyers from brands including Galeries Lafayette, Kizow, Catembo, Rainbow Gallery, Globus Department Stores and the Urban Collective to attend the event. “The dti has been involved with

the Design Indaba Expo since its inception and every year we are inundated with more and more buyer requests. The Expo is evidently growing international opportunities for creative South African entrepreneurs to leverage their goods and services – and this corresponds entirely with the dti’s mandate,” said Nadia Sujee, the dti’s Director of Creative Industries. “Displaying constant growth, the Design Indaba Expo is also remarkable for not having stagnated. This is possibly because of its long-term investments in building skills, technology and infrastructure platforms, and broad-based BEE initiatives. Keeping it proudly South African, Design Indaba has also elevated the profile of local design among local audiences,” Sujee continued. The economic leverage of the buyers attending Expo is significant. In 2005 the dti-supported foreign buyers alone ordered in excess of R1 million, in 2006 over R1,5 million and in 2007 more than R3 million from Expo exhibitors. More than financial success, is the growing international reputation of South African designers. Eco-light designer Heath Nash participated in 100% London and 100% Tokyo last year thanks to contacts made at the Expo, while architect and industrial designer Tsai received a Red Dot award for his Nested Bunkbeds, first shown at the Expo. In turn, Streetwires’s participation in the Expo resulted in a commission for 200 life-sized wire sheep from an American company. “I find the Design Expo an invaluable event for touching base with established designers, discovering fresh emerging talent, feeling the heartbeat of our growing industry and for having a really good time,” said Trevyn McGowan a South African sourcing agent for the international retail market, including the Conran Shop in the UK

and Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters and Terrain in the US. She also works with a number of boutique stores in Europe. In 2007 she wrote R10-million worth of orders for South African products. Mike Purdham, Design Expo manager, agreed: “South African design improves in quality and quantity every year. This year the Design Indaba Expo is bigger than ever in terms of exhibitors and floor space. With more buyers too, we are expecting the financial indicators to set a record high.” Design Indaba Expo has always set a benchmark in the South African design industry. Rather than being filled, like traditional trade shows, the Expo is curated by an advisory panel of the best South African designers, stylists, critics and industry experts. Thus, a high standard of originality, production and commercial value is ensured well before the doors even open to the public. “Based on the qualifying portfolios, this year’s exhibitors are an indication of how much the local design fraternity has grown in terms of both scope and excellence. More than 250 exhibitors are confirmed. Design stalwarts are returning with new products, while at least 50 brand new exhibitors will be charming the Expo visitors for the first time,” Purdham went on. This year also sees the launch of a dedicated fashion hall sponsored by SABC. The space will host all-day fashion shows and a South African short film and music video festival. Building on the fashion concept introduced in 2007, the fashion arena will again reject the traditional runway for a more atmospheric approach. A fashion boutique will also be housed in the space. Gail Catlin, one of South Africa’s most accomplished painters, is poised to show a new collection of paintings at the Joao Ferreira Gallery in Cape Town in February 2008. This solo exhibition, marks the beginning of a new chapter in Gail’s glittering career and should not be missed. After receiving a grant and ten years of experimentation, Gail mastered the complex technique of applying liquid crystal to her magnificent paintings. To date, she is the only artist in the world who has perfected this technique. The paintings literally ‘dance’ before you, reacting to body temperature or a passing cloud, the effect as the crystals warm and cool is mesmerising. It refracts the light in different directions akin to a brilliant faceted diamond. Her canvas of choice is glass, which enhances the translucent quality of the crystal. Working mainly from the reverse

side, Gail builds her mirror image layer by layer with the dexterity and confidence of an accomplished artist who is at one with her medium. Her paintings often contain a mixed palette of vibrant Indian inks, acrylic or clay to create a modern masterpiece. It has been several years since a solo Catlin exhibition has been staged. So the decision to show some of her recent work is a momentous occasion. Gail presents a unique body of work on the theme of, Take Flight, at the prestigious new João Ferreira Gallery in Loop Street, Cape Town closing the end of Febuary. This significant collection marks a new dawn for Catlin.
