Researchers’ Symposium

The ICLEI Researchers’ Symposium The International ICLEI Urban Research Symposium, or Researchers’ Symposium for short, is a multiple-day event which is integrated into every ICLEI World Congress. The motivation behind the Symposium This Researchers’ Symposium, the 4th in ICLEI’s 25-year history, brings together leading urban sustainability researchers to present on topics in international policy making and sustainable development. Interested researchers were invited to submit abstracts on one of four themes: • • • •

Implementing the Sustainable Development Goals at the urban level Urban Nexus and inter-sectoral approaches to urban sustainable development Monitoring, Reporting, and Verifying – Performance driven urban sustainability Think tanks for cities

ICLEI has partnered with the Centre for Sustainable Community Development at Simon Fraser University (Burnaby, Canada), Pando | Sustainable Communities, Local Environment: The International Journal of Justice and Sustainability, and the Seoul Institute to lead this series of researcher-based dialogues.

Thank You to the Seoul Institute! ICLEI would like to thank the Seoul Institute, the host institution for the 4th International ICLEI Urban Research Symposium, for their gracious hospitality. The Seoul Institute is a research think tank which is integrated into the Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG). Established in 1992, its goal is to establish a medium to long-term vision for Seoul through the proposal of social policies on welfare, culture, education, industry, urban management, city planning, transportation, safety, and the environment. It accomplishes this by making municipal administration more efficient and effective through the performance of targeted professional research. Seoul has experienced the most rapid development in world history, and is now in a unique position to share its diverse urban development knowledge and technical know-how. Moving forwards, the Seoul Institute would like to take on a role as an international ‘Solution Bank’, providing customized solutions to interested local governments.

The Seoul Institute is will be holding a ‘mobile workshop’ of its operations on 10 April, 2015. As a driving force in Seoul’s urban transformation, the Seoul Institute will present on the effectiveness of integrated city think tank institutions in informing and influencing cities. The Seoul Institute will also present Seoul Vision 2030, its overarching urban planning document, and highlight the Seoul Institute’s innovative framework for cooperating on urban issues in East Asia within the Megacities Think Tank Alliance (MeTTA).
