The ART ROOM Curated Retail Gallery

The Guide

ABOUT THE ART ROOM At school the art room was usually the most popular place to visit. While other class rooms were spare and regimented the art room was a bright rabble of incomplete artworks pinned to paint spattered walls, and brushes stored in old agee jars on big work tables. The freedom and energy was palpable and the work that came out of the art room was mostly unique if random, and occasionally inspired. All artists must have begun and grown in this way. From the colourful chaos of pre-school through to secondary school and perhaps beyond to the tertiary studio, the art room has always been a feature of discovery and practice. In establishing The Art Room, a new retail salonstyle gallery, the Depot wants to capture the sense of vibrancy that these places manifest and to become a destination for visitors keen to discover and engage diverse new work. While eclectic and lively, The Art Room will be a curated space that ensures exhibited work is featured to its best advantage. The Art Room offers artists the opportunity to exhibit from one to three works, available for immediate purchase. It will enable exhibitors to maintain a relationship with their previous purchasers, to build a relationship with new audiences, to gauge interest in a new theme they may be developing and to have a profile and an outlet for sales apart from a full exhibition.

Criteria for Exhibitors The Art Room is a curated gallery with works selected through a simple submission process. These procedures have been put in place to ensure mutual benefits for the artist, gallery and the community. Exhibitors must be members of the Depot Artspace. A maximum of three works may be submitted by each artist. All works to be original works by the artist. Before work can be brought in an application must be submitted (see page 4). Commission will be charged at 35% flat rate.

Works should be realistically priced to sell for the benefit of the artist and the Depot. Works to be created to a high standard, using high quality materials. Wall works must be ready to hang. Due to space constraints larger works may not be accepted. While we take great care, Depot Artspace is not responsible for any damage to artworks. Works will be held for exhibition for 3 months, after which unsold works must be collected. Uncollected works will not be the responsibility of Depot Artspace. Return postage for unsold works will be covered by the exhibitor. A $10 flat admin fee is required from each artist. If you feel your work aligns with the criteria above then we would love to hear from you! 3
