Dear Brothers: Excitement continues to mount as we approach the 150th birthday of Delta Upsilon. Plans are now in place for a gala celebration in connection with the undergraduate convention and leadership conference. Outstanding alumni are to be recognized and new plans for the future unveiled. All of you will want to be in Indianapolis in August for this once-in-a-lifetime event. At this time Of historic significance, we pause to reflect upon our past. Our thoughts turn to that handful of brave young men who created from a simple commitment to excellence, friendship, justice, character and liberal culture, the primary fabric of our fraternity . We reflect as well upon the loyal brothers who have preceded us in establishing the permanent trust fund, the International Headquarters and all that is now an integral part of Delta Upsilon. These reflections on our past help focus our priorities in the present. Thus, we honor in this issue those who are contributing significantly of their material means to the continued upbuilding of our Fraternity and as well some special brothers who have distinguished themselves in science and space. All bring great credit to our

brotherhood and serve as magnificent examples for our undergraduates to emulate. Finally, our thoughts turn to our future. That future hinges on the quality of our newest brothers coming into our ranks in the chapters throughout the two nations. I have recently met several outstanding undergraduates who are third generation D.U .'s. It is a thrilling experience to see these stalwart young brothers pursuing their paths toward excellence in the same traditions as their fathers and grandfathers before them. Thus, we discover anew, that Delta U psilon is not just a fraternity for collegiates but an ongoing and lifelong association of men dedicated to common goals and values, committed to individual and collective excellence and dedicated to helping each succeeding generation find its place in the sun. Three DUs Part of Selected Astronaut Group

Delta Upsilon has three members in that very select grou p of NASA astronauts - Terry J. Hart, Lehigh '68; Frederick Hauck, Tufts '62 and Brewster H. Shaw, Jr., Wisconsin '67 . Terry Hart flew as a mission specialist on the space shuttle flight in Apr il. The six-day mission included deployment of the Long Duration Exposure Facility and repair of the Solar Maximum Satellite. Captain Frederick Hauck was the pilot of the shuttle mission in June 1983 which"included Sally Ride, and is assigned as commander of the shuttle mission scheduled for September 28, 1984. Lt. Colonel Brewster Shaw was the pilot on the shuttle in November and December 1983 and is assigned as commander for his next mission now scheduled for February 1, 1985. To understand how select a group the NASA astronauts are, it is interesting to recall that the first astronauts were named in 1959 when the original seven, Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, Gus Grissom, Deke Slayton, John Glenn, Wally Schirra , and Alan Shepard, were picked from a field of only 500 who met all the qualifications. tion, NASA issued another call for Gemini and Appollo astronaut trainees, and this time there were 200 applicants which was pared down to nine men named astronauts. Fourteen more astronaut trainees were chosen from nearly 300 applicants in October 1963 ~ By then, prime emphasis had shifted away from flight experience toward superior academic qualifications. In October 1963 applications were taken on the basis of educational background alone. These were the scientist-astronauts and 400 applicants met the qualifications of which six were selected in 1965 . The most recent group of astronauts began training for the shuttle era and this group includes 15 pilots and 20 mission specialist and our three brothers. Minimum requirements for pilots in this group were bachelor's degree in engineering, physical science or mathematics with advanced degrees desirable, and at least 1,000 hours offirst pilot time. High performance jet aircraft and flight test experience was highly desirable and they had to pass a NASA Class I flight physical. Mission specialist were required to

have a bachelor's degree in engineering, biological or physical science with advanced degrees or experience desirable. They have to pass a NASA Class II physical. Brother Hart received his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Lehigh University, a master of science in' mechanical engineering from MIT and a master of science in electrical engineering from Rutgers University. Rick Hauck received his bachelor of science degree in physics from Tufts University and a master of science in nuclear engineering from MIT. ' Brewster Shaw received both a bachelor and a master of science in engineering mechanics from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. The Space Shuttle orbiter crew positions are commander, pilot, mission specialist and payload specialist. The commander and pilot fly the orbiter. A mission specialist will normally be assigned as a spacecraft-proficient ctewmember who is also skilled in payload operations, and who can assist the payload specialist to function effectively. Once selected to train as an astronaut, it's back to school studying basic science and technology courses such as mathematics, meterology, guidance and navigation, astronomy, physics and computers .

Training to familiarize astronauts with the environment of space includes weightlessness where the astronauts practice such activities as drinking, eating and using various types of equipment. To become accustomed to working in a pressurized spacesuit, astronauts spend many mission training sessions in the suit. Shuttle pilot astronauts will land their vehicle much like an aircraft on a runway. They practice this in simulators, and conventional and modified aircraft. . Other astronaut responsibilities include keeping abreast of spacecraft, payloads, and launch vehicles design, development and modification activities. This requires their presence at many engineering conferences and reviews at the Johnson Space Center where the astronauts are assigned. In addition, the astronaut pilot is required to keep flying skills sharp and physical condition excellentboth will be called upon often in space flight. Flight readiness is maintained through regular use of high performance jet aircraft. Keeping in excellent physical con- . dition also applies to the mission s pecialis t. When an astronaut is assigned to a flight crew his schedule really gets busy. Crews are named for specific flights well in advance of the launch date. For the Space Shuttle program the flights will come at more frequent intervals and several crews will be in training at the same time. Each crew receives cross-training so that at least one crewman can . handle the most critical duties of each associate. Each crew takes part in spacecraft reviews and test programs which lets each crewman become familiar with a spacecraft. These reviews include briefing on spacecraft 路s ystems and guidance and navigation. Before the flight astronauts work with various simulators, first to learn the individual tasks that will be required to fly the spacecraft then to put them all together in sequence that will be followed in the actual mission. ing conditions. Training reaches its peak several weeks before the scheduled flight when the mission simulator is linked with Mission Control Center and with the also-simulated version of the network of tracking stations. Crews and night controllers practice the entire mission in a joint training exercise that proves everything ready for the real thing. In between their simulator sessions, the crewmembers will continue to keep themselves up-todate on the status of the spacecraft and payloads for their mission. They also practice activities related to the mission, such as deploying and retrieying payloads, operating experiments and extravehicular activity. They train in celestial observation - important to special navigation and in the performance of some of the scientific experiments. Even when the flight is completed their job is not done. The crew members spend several hours or days in debriefing - recounting whether spacecraft systems, payload handling techniques or perhaps training procedures might be improved. Brother Hart was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in January 1978. He completed his one-year training and evaluation period making him eligible for assignment as a mission specialist in 1979 and has served as a member of the support crew for several of the Space Shuttle flights prior to his first mission in April of 1984. Captain Hauck was pilot for the second flight of the Orbiter Challenger in June 1983. This was the first mission with a five-person crew. During that mission two satellites were deployed and many other exercises practiced. The crew also included a medical doctor who studied the effects of space sickness on the crew members. Lt. Colonel Shaw was pilot of the Columbia flight that had a six-man crew and launched on November 28, 1983. During their 10-day flight the crew conducted more than 70 multi-disciplinary scientific and technical investigations in the fields of life sciences, atmospheric physics and earth observations,

astronomy and solar physics, space plasma physics and materials processing, and returned the heaviest payload to earth when they landed at Edwards Air Force Base on December 8, 1983. Brother Hart entered the Air Force Reserve in 1969, completing his pilot training in 1970 when he was named Outstanding Officer of the Undergraduate Pilot Class. From 1968 to 1978, he was employed with Bell Telephone Laboratories where his principle duties included electrical and mechanical design responsibilities for a variety of electronic power equipment used in the Bell System. He is married and has two daughters. Rick Hauck, a Navy ROTC student at Tufts, was commissioned upon graduation and served 20 months as communications officer and CIC officer on the USS Warrington. He began flight training in 1966 and served aboard USS Coral Sea flying 114 combat and combat support missions. He was selected for test pilot training in 1970 and was named the Navy's Outstanding Test Pilot for 1972. Brother Hauck is also married and has one son and one daughter. Brewster Shaw entered the Air Force in 1969 and received his wings in 1970. He served as anF100 combat fighter pilot at Phan Rang, Vietnam and later as F-4 fighter pilot at Ubon, Thailand. He attended the USAF Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base and later became an instructor. He has received many commendations including the Air Force Distinguished Flying Cross with 6 Oak ' Leaf Clusters and Air Medal with 20 Oak Leaf Clusters. He is also married with two sons and one daughter. At presstime, it was announced that Terry J. Hart, a crew member of the April space shuttle mission that repaired the Solar Max satellite, was leaving NASA to return to private industry. Hart, who operated the remote manipulator system on the mission, joined the newly formed Military and Government Subsidy Systems Division of Bell Laboratories in Whippany, New Jersey. 43

DU Alumni: Our Best, Most Wanted Natural Resource This April, in Kansas City, the Graduate Activities Committee of the Fraternity sponsored the third annual Delta Upsilon Alumni Institute. The Institute has as its purpose preparation of the next generation of alumni to work with the men in our undergraduate chapters. We have held the DU Alumni Institute in Indianapolis, Chicago and Kansas City. Next April, on the 27th, it will be conducted in the Boston, Massachusetts area. Where there are good Delta U psilon alumni working closely with our chapters there is a better chance that the chapter will prosper and aspire to the kind of excellence that most exemplifies the basic purposes of our great fraternity. Where there are few alumni involved, the chapter is more likely to have a rocky, unstable existence, and to wither and die. For many undergraduate leaders in college today, the alumnus advisor that they can talk with on a regular basis, may be the only contact that they have with someone from the "real world" outside of classroom contact with faculty members. The excellent alumnus advisor not only provides a continuing stream of know-how about the community in which the chapter is set; he has the experience that comes from his career. You will find undergraduates in our chapters far more interested in alumni today than ever before. The proof of their interest is the vast improvement in the quality and frequency of chapter-alumni communications. Alumni are recognizing that this is a better time for fraternities, ~he best in a decade, on college campuses, too. There are more alumni stepping forward to offer their help and assistance as chapter

counselors, advisors, chapter deputies, province governors, and to work on standing committees . When alumni graduate or leave college today, we write to them asking about whether they might be interested in helping their fraternity. Increased numbers of them are responding affirmatively, and their names are added to our growing Delta Upsilon Talent Bank. The Talent Bank exists to help us locate in our over 88,000 initiates, the people who are willing to give something back from their fraternity experience to the next, new generation. New alumni clubs are being chartered, too, and there are many special chapter and International Fraternity events planned all during the coming year as we celebrate the 150th anniversary of the founding of Delta Upsilon in 1834. If you are an alumnus, who is reading this message, and has always been interested in helping Delta Upsilon, please clip out the Delta Upsilon alumni support contribution form and write the most generous check you can to sustain and improve the excellence of programs just such as the DU Alumni Institute. Programs and services that will place Delta Upsilon in the forefront of leading fraternities. And, tell us that you'd like to help a chapter, too, we'll add that information to the talent bank, and you'll be hearing from us as a result. Matukonis, President 229 Locust Lane State College, Pennsylvania 16801 Many areas have seen drastic improvements in the past few months, such as communication with alumni and involvement a nd reputation among the Greek community and relations with residents of State College. In December we were honored as we participated in the downtown winter parade. Brothers Carl and Tedesco danced in the largest IFC philanthropic marathon which raised $190,000 for cancer research . We have revised our pledge manual making the program more educational. Organization in house meetings is very strong, with set goals the administration will see through. McGill Chapter Back on DU Rolls Delta Upsilon reinstituted its dormant chapter at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, on the weekend of March 23-24, 1984. Reinstitution ceremonies began on Friday evening when, led by William D. Greenberg, Western On/m'io '73, Vice President of Delta Upsilon International Fraternity; Dennis W. Koch, Colorado '82, Fraternity Services Director; and Richard M. Holland, Syracuse '83, Leadership Consultant, 49 undergraduates proceeded through Rite One of the Ritual of Initiation. Members of the installation team, representing the International Fraternity, and David H . Arditi, McGill '69, representing the McGill alumni, held a planning and goal-setting session with the executive committee following the ceremon)'. The Ritual of Reinstitution took place Saturday afternoon, as 52 candidates for initiation and reinstitution gathered in the Ballroom of the Faculty Club on the McGill campus. Serving as Master was William D. Greenberg, and assisting in the reinstitutiOn ceremony were Chief Marshal Dennis W. Koch; Chaplain Richard W. Holland; and David H. Arditi, R. David Bourke, McGill '54, and Hudson H. Vipond, NlcGili '64, serVing as Assistant Marshals. Brother G. Miller Hyde, McGill '26, gave the inspiring Charge. was made to Chapter President Stephen D. Puddicombe, McGill '84, by Vice President Greenberg. Brother Koch then installed the officers. Following the ceremonies, Brother Holland led the assembled initiates, guests and alumni to the center of the campus, where after a few ' inspired remarks, the DU flag \Vas once again raised over the McGill campllS while the excited initiates raised two fraternity cheers that echoed across the campus. Saturday even in g a banquet was held in the West Ballroom of the LeCentre Sheraton In Montreal. Brother Gilles P. LeBlanc, IV! cGili '85, serving as toastmaster, introduced Brother R. David Bourke, Secretary General of McGill University. Brother Bourke congratulated the new chapter and welcomed them back to the university. Bl"other Greenberg, representing the International Fraternity, expressed his great pride in welcoming the oldest Canadian chapter back into the fold. Brother Arditi, President of the alumni corporation of McGill, said a few words encOUl'aging more alumni and chapter cooperation, and then called on Brother Bourke to read an inspiring and emotional letter from.J. Victor Rogers, McGill '55, presenting a war memorial plaqUe back to the chapter. Following the welcoming remarks, Brother Koch introduced brothers making

presentations to the new chapter. The delegation hom the Toronto Chapter presented a Canadian flag to the newly reinstituted McGill Chapter. Brothers Richard p, Boul'ne and Ernest S. Spiller, both McGill '69, presented the chapter copies of Bai1'd's Manual of College Fraternities and the just published 150-year history of the fraternity, Conflict, Challenge and Change, for the chapter library . Brother Greenberg then presented to the new chapter the Roll Book with each initiate's name inscribed within , and the officiat" Ritual Books of the Fraternity. Brother Holland made a few short remarks about international cooperation and brotherhood and then presented the American flag to the new chapter. Concluding the presentations to the new chapter, Brother Koch presented bound copies of the Delta Upsilon Quarterly, and a special plaque sent by Donald C. Rasmussen, Purdue '46, Treasurer of the International Fraternity. President Puddicombe, responding for the new chapter, thanked alumni brothers not in attendance for their help and guidance. He then went on to recognize past colony presidents for their work towards accomplish ilig this great goal. Concluding the evening's activities, Brother Bourne asked everyone to rise and join in singing "Hail, Delta Upsilon" while he accompanied on the trumpet.
