"You can be proud to be a DU!" '91 Leadership Institute was a success! Dear Brothers, I'm writing this report to you having just returned from the annual Leadership Institute, Convention and Assembly held in Scottsdale, Arizona. It was indeed a historical event. I wish you could have been there! Nearly 500 undergraduate and alumni DU's experienced first-hand why Delta Upsilon Fraternity is alive and well, and ... relevant. I'd like to share with you some of my personal observations about the meetings, our Fraternity and what is needed for our success in the years ahead . First, and perhaps foremost , is how proud I am to be a Brother of the undergraduates who attended the Leadership Institute. Too often we hear and see stories about what's wrong with today 's college students, especially Fraternity members. It's unfortunate that People Magazine, CNN and other media didn 't come to this event! If they had, they would have had only positive reactions to our young men. There weren 't any negatives. Not one! The hotel staff and other guests commented numerous times on how well-behaved, gentlemanly, intelligent, respectful, and fun our young DU leaders were . We alumni watched these future leaders of our Fraternity (and the world) participate in an educational program designed to heighten their awareness of the issues facing them, our Fraternity and society. They came to learn, and they did. They came to experience the "Bonds of Friendship," by working and playing together, and they did. They came to deal with the issues and make tough decisions for the betterment of society and our Fraternity, and they did. I felt like the proud father of near!y 500 good sons! You would have too. There are almost too many other highlights to describe here . The much needed Risk Management Plan and its attendant Liability Insurance Program are now realities. We can all take heart in knowing that, as a result, a major disaster will probably not threaten our existence as a Fraternity. The new Loss Prevention Manual , unveiled at the meeting, is by all accounts, the best risk management guide for local chapters among all Fraternities!

Another highlight was an historical one ... the Colonization of the Arizona State Colony of Delta Upsilon, proof that DU's expansion program is progressing as planned. You 'd be proud to call these newest DU's your brothers! Another bright spot was the report on the President's Club fund -raising. 1990-91 was a record year for DU, albeit one which must be surpassed substantially this year if we are to continue providing the leadership, guidance and chapter services so desperately needed. 852 Brothers joined last year, compared to 705 the previous year. That's a 20 % increase in membership. Our goal this year is 1,000 Brothers and a minimum of $300,000 (that's an increase of over $90,000 from '90-'91). Our goals are ambitious, but attainable. We will begin production of a rush video for all chapters to use by Fall 1992. We now have the largest professional staff of any Fraternity our size - an investment in the future. We hope to start 10 new alumni clubs across the country and to reorganize a dozen alumni chapters - this year! The Seven Stars System for chapter management has been revised and updated, as has the Cornerstone, which will be available this Fall. This past year, 12 Regional Leadership Seminars were attended by over 350 young men, providing the best programming presented in our history, and they'll be even better this year. Increased services and commitments to our undergraduates are necessary and relevant, but can only occur through increased alumni support and by more alumni participation at all levels of our Fraternity. I write you to join me, and your Board of Directors, in helping to make this year our best ever. In my opinion, the legacy of providing opportunity for these fine young men is not only our responsibility, it's our obligation. Fraternally,

elta Upsilon begins the 1991-92 academic .. year with the largest professional staff in the history of our Fraternity. This year's staff is composed of nine men from some of our strongest chapters including: Bradley, Bucknell, Colorado, Cornell, DePauw, Michigan and South Carolina. To start their employment with Delta Upsilon, these men spent seven weeks in extensive and comprehensive training, learning about the many facets of the fraternity world. Parts of the summer were spent in combined training with the staffs from Lambda Chi Alpha, Delta Tau Delta, Theta Chi, and Beta Theta Pi. Our staff has been exposed to many different issues and concerns in the interfraternity world, as well as to many ideas and solutions for these concerns. Executive Director Steven J. Gerber, Northern Illinois '68, will be leading the staff as they carry out the goals and directives of the General Fraternity's Board of Directors. Much of this year's focus will be on the new General Liability Plan as well as on the S. Gerber guidelines involved with the Fraternity's first official year as a member of the Fraternity Insurance Purchasing Group (FIPG). Other areas of concern include: internal and external expansion, and the increased focus on alumni, and their involvement with the undergraduates. David A. Suplee, Bucknell '90, is DU's Director of Chapter Services, and as such is responsible for educational programming, undergraduate chapter operations, and the guidance of the Leadership Consultants. Brother Suplee will also be involved with the implementation of the risk management policies and D. Suplee communicating with the chapter leadership. Brother Suplee graduated from Bucknell University with a Bachelor of Arts in English.

While at Bucknell, he served as Vice President of his chapter, President of the Interfraternity Council, and he was a Resident Assistant for two years. He received the "Bison Award" for his contributions and service to activities on the Bucknell Campus and is a member of the Order of Omega. Brother Suplee is in his second year with the Fraternity, after traveling as a Leadership Consultant last year. Jeffrey A. Dickson, Bucknell '90, is serving as the Fraternity's first Director of Risk Management and Insurance. In this role, Brother Dickson is responsible for the development and monitoring of the Fraternity's Loss Prevention Program and the administration J. Dickson of Delta Upsilon's General Comprehensive Liability Insurance Plan, as well as providing educational support and assistance for chapters to aid in compliance. Jeff is in his second year with Delta Upsilon, after having served as the Fraternity's Alumni Relations Director. Brother Dickson graduated from Bucknell University with a Bachelor of Arts in English. During his four years in Lewisburg, he served as Treasurer of his chapter, as a Senior Intern in the Bucknell Admissions Office and earned four varsity letters as a member of the University's nationally ranked water polo team. Andrew J. Bosman, South Carolina '91, is the Fraternity's Communications Director. As the Fraternity's Managing Editor of the Quarterly magazine, Brother Bosman's primary responsibility will be the production, layout and design. He is also responsible for the A. Bosman production of the DU Dialogue, and the layout, design and production of other publications of the Fraternity. Brother Bosman graduated from the University

While at South Carolina he served as Second Vice President of his chapter, Vice President of Omicron Delta Kappa leadership honor society, and Public Relations Director for Mortar Board, also a leadership honor society. He also worked as an undergraduate assistant for the South Carolina Scholastic Press Association. Joel P. Riley, DePauw '91, is the Fraternity's Expansion Director. Comprehensive Risk Management Program and General Insurance Policy Adopted by Convention and Assembly

A

t the recent meetings of the Convention and Assembly of Trustees, held in Scottsdale, Arizona, both undergraduate and alumni delegates voted for legislation to amend the by-laws. By doing so, the Board of Directors has been authorized to obtain liability insurance and follow through on a comprehensive plan of risk management and loss prevention. Previously, DU had demonstrated its commitment to risk management by joining the Fraternity Insurance Purchasing Group (FIPG) and adopting its policies. That decision enabled us to procure the most advanced general liability insurance plan available to fraternities. This action marks a major step forward for Delta Upsilon. As a result, DU now joins a number of other fraternities in taking the lead in loss prevention/risk management, and adds an entirely new dimension to the Fraternity's operations. With 100 percent chapter participation, we can all rest assured that our Fraternity can survive a tragic occurrence despite the litigious society in which we live.

- - - - Background- - - After an unfortunate incident at a DU chapter house several years ago, DU experienced its own 'brush with fate." The International Fraternity's insurance carrier determined that the acts of individual chapters were not covered due to specific exclusions in the policy. Fortunately, this situation was able to be resolved. This incident caused further investigation by the Board of Directors which

revealed a substantial number of chapters with no liability insurance at all. Also of great concern was the number of chapters believing that they had proper insurance, but would most likely have been denied coverage if a claim was filed due to fine print exclusions in the areas of hazing, sexual abuse or harassment, and alcohol liability. These facts, together with

societal pressures to live up to our own (the Greek system as a whole) standards, caused our Board to take action. Other critical factors are: • Increased consumption of alcohol on college campuses despite documented decreases by the general public. • Federal laws putting pressure on colleges/universities to address underage drinking problems. • Declining enrollment pressures on colleges/universities projected through the year 2,000. • The absence of insurance companies willing to write liability policies for fraternities; and • Concern by responsible alumni to get or stay involved

without adequate insurance protection.

- - - Loss Prevention - - As part of its program, Delta Upsilon has published a Loss Prevention Manual and distributed copies to every chapter (additional copies may be purchased from Fraternity Headquarters for $15) . This manual is a guide to be used by each chapter to help implement their own risk management program in accordance with General Fraternity guidelines. Key areas of the manual focus on the job of the Chapter Risk Manager, proper event planning, crisis management, insurance policy details, chapter house safety and fire prevention as well as the proper reporting procedures for accidents or incidents. - - - Your Role Today - - Alumni understanding and commitment is crucial to the success of the program and the future of Delta Upsilon. Our undergraduates are stepping up to the challenges and changes. Alumni must also become familiar with fraternity risk management. As an example, no bulk containers of alcohol are permitted at chapter functions on or off chapter property. There are no separate standards for alumni. "BYOB" or cash bars are the acceptable methods of serving alcohol at any fraternity event. With everyone working together, we can insure that DU will continue to grow and meet its commitments to undergraduates, alumni, the campus community and to society. Your support is more important than ever. ,

Congratulations to Doug Dell , Doug Evans, Doug Peters and Joe Donnell, whose foursome, "Three Dougs and an Average Joe," took first place in the 1991 AlmostAnnual DePauw DU Open golf scramble. The event, held at Pleasant Run Golf Course in Indianapolis on June 25, was the latest in a series of similar outings held by alumni of the DePauw Chapter of Delta Upsilon Fraternity dating back to 1982. Organized this year by Denny Hogan, the weekend activities drew 24 golfers to town and included a cookout at the home of Doug Dell, where the Fraternity members and their wives, children and guests reunited and relived DU memories. Seven graduation years were represented by the alumni group.

"M

any DU alumni remember fondly their (undergraduate) fraternity life and the gains it has brought them. But some content themselves to sit on the sidelines and complain, or do little of consequence to improve what they see." I agree with these words, spoken by Distinguished Award winner, Judge Eugene Wright, Washington '34. Regardless of which chapter intiated you, we are all members of the DU Brotherhood. As such, you have a role in promoting the welfare of your Fraternity. Half of that role is fulfilled by supporting the DU Educational Foundation in its efforts to educate your Brothers. That means starting or continuing to make a tax-deductible gift to your Fraternity. The other half of your part in strengthening our Brotherhood, is detailed in the following story: A strong partnership between involved alumni and motivated undergraduates, was one of the hallmarks of excellence that earned the Washington Brotherhood the Sweepstakes Award for most outstanding chapter. In my view, however, the group's true achievement, is their provision of a blueprint for success, one that we as alumni can apply to any DU Chapter or Colony. Transforming the Washington Chapter from a "good" operation to an excellent one, was not an overnight process. " "We always had a good group of leaders," recalls Dick Brandenburg, Washington '55. "But about six years ago, they became really committed to changing things.

"It started by considering the overall picture of getting guys through rush that you would like to be around." Sounds painfully simple, but the change in perspective caught on. Traditional pledge classes of 20 men, became 40. "It only took a few Brothers in leadership positions to start changing things," observed Bruce Raskin, Washington '86. "It started from the top and moved down throughout the Brotherhood. We were able to get more

alumni involved as well." Brother Brandenburg remembers, "We added stability to the Alumni Chapter organization, plus an active counselor corps who took on roles as advisors, rather than older equals." Tough decisions and spirited debate also marked the Brotherhood's evolution. Brother Raskin notes that, "We had to kick some people out, and that created some major battles." Alumni were increasingly called upon to assist through times of difficulty, lending maturity and experience in

troublesome situations. In addition, the chapter made an effort to better utilize the services, programs, and guidance offered by the DU Headquarters. As an example, their social programming Improved, when they became one of the first DU groups to stop using collective social funds to purchase alcohol. In the past year, the Washington alumni have added to the momentum of their chapter. Two months ago, they held a tremendously successful reunion, and the list to the left shows a solid commitment to maintaining a strong support system for the chapter. So, in addition to financial support, what is the rest of your role in DU? I think Judge Wright says it best: "An alumnus ought to watch critically the progress of his chapter. We cannot see the Fraternity system prosper, without more alumni oversight." Your role, with its two parts, is clear. Find out what is happening at your chapter, or the nearest DU brotherhood. If you are unable to visit the campus, a phone call or note to the undergraduate or alumni Chapter President can work wonders to lift spirits. And an annual tax-deductible gift to DU helps provide the necessary support to complement your involvement, and build a stronger Brotherhood. Fraternall y,
