Meyer elected President; new policies approved

Over 500 attend 1990 Institute T

he election of a new President, the approval of several important new policies and the First Annual DU Games highlighted the Fraternity's 1990 Leadership Institute, The 1990s: A Decade for Distinction, held in August at the University of Illinois. More than 400 undergraduates began arriving on Thursday, August the 2nd. The day gave undergraduates the opportunity to formally register for the Institute, check in to their rooms at the Illinois Street Residence Hall and to become aquainted with the Illinois campus.

Opening Convocation sets the tone Thursday night's exciting and energentic Opening Convocation helped set the tone for the entire weekend of brotherhood. Featured speaker Edward King from Bradley University spoke to the Convocation on the "Challenges and Changes in the '90s." Delegates also heard the report of the Conduct Committee and learned the details of the much anticipated Delta Upsilon Games.

UGAB/Convention take important actions During the day on Thursday Leadership Institute delegates learned of the number of important actions taken by the Undergraduate Advisory Board (UGAB), which met the day before. At their Wednesday meeting, the UGAB

DU Presidellt, Dick Meyer, receives gavel from Sam Yates

elected three new undergraduate members of the Fraternity's Board of Directors and approved several recommendations sure to have lasting impact on the Fraternity. The three undergraduates elected to the Board where, Christopher M. Andrews, Kansas '91, Jeffrey D. Barrom, Washington State '91 and Bruce P. Batista, Miami '91. The UGAB recommended to the undergraduate Convention the passage of a new Fraternity fees structure, a Membership Development plan and progressive new alcohol policy. All three of these where passed by the 156th Convention which met on Friday night. The new fees structure updates Fraternity undergraduate member dues which had remained virtually unchanged during the decade of the 1980s. Under this structure all newly initiated members of the Fraternity will now receive an official DU badge included in the

cost of their initiation fee. The Fraternity's new Membership Development plan will help to facilitate DU's need for continued internal growth. The program lays the groundwork for a system of goals and incentives in the area of yearly membership recruitment. The goals, which will be set annually by the General Fraternity, will be based on factors such as past recruitment totals, campus situations and current chapter size and stability. Perhaps the most important action taken by the UGAB and ultimately the Convention was the recommendation and passage of a Constitutional Amendment pertaining to alcoholic beverages. The amendment, effective August 3, 1991, states, "... no alcoholic beverages may be purchased through the chapter treasury or with chapter funds nor may the purchase of alcoholic beverages for members or guests be (continued next page)

undertaken or coordinated by a chapter or by any member in name of or on the behalf of the chapter." The amendment brings Delta Upsilon in line with what many others in the Greek world have done in the way of risk management and alcohol policy.

Educational sessions began early Friday Friday, August 3, marked the first day of alumni registration and the initial day of educational ~essions and Fraternity events, mcluding the Delta Upsilon Games. The 1990 Lead~rship Institute can boast what was perhaps the most insightful, knowledgable and well-rounded faculty ever to attend DUs annual summer event. The faculty included, past DU President, Terry Bullock Ka.nsas ~tate '61, nationally known, WIll KeIrn, Pacific 75, past Fraternity Executive Director Wilford A. Bulter, CAE, Western Michigan '61, and many other fine DU presenters. In addition to Mr. King there were also several non-DU faculty members who contributued greatly to the weekend's activities. University of Iowa Greek Advisor Mary Peterson an'd Massachusetts' Institute of Technology Director of Special Services, Stephen D. Immerman, both participated in undergraduate and alumni edcational sessions. Mr. Immerman's core presentation, "Leadership jn the 1990s" ope~ed Friday morning's list of seSSIOns. Other Friday morning presentation topics included: Brother Bullock's "DU Man", Mrs. Peterson's "A Man's Place Is Where He Wants It To Be," and sessions on Fraternity Ritual, chapter discipline, chapter rejuvenation and alumni/undergraduate newsletters.

First Annual DU Games challenges undergraduates On Friday afternoon, the First Annual Delta Upsilon Games ",:ere held. After opening ceremomes and a picnic-style lunch the Games began. Over 20 teams of delegates, clad. in color-~oded Leadership InstItute T-shIrts, competed in a number of traditional and not-so-traditional team oriented events. Tug-a-War, three and five leg races, leap frog races, a sit-up competition and 10 man pyramid building contest tested the . stamina and team-work skills of all participants. To go along with these ~thletic events, delegates raced m an exciting team water melon eating contest. The Games were a great success and an event that will be looked for,:",ard to in the future. Friday's events concluded with the Convention Dinner, featuring an address by Brother Bullock and concluded with the policy-setting 156th DU Convention.

New President Elected On Saturday, the 81st Assembly of Trustees met in the University'S

Illini Union. The Assembly passed the all Convention actions and elected a new Fraternity President. Richard E. Meyer, Michigan '61, will serve as Fraternity President for 1990-91. Saturday night's Distinquished DU Dinner was the setting for Brother Meyer's first formal address to undergraduates and alumni as DU President. President Meyer presented to att~ndees a three-pronged explanation of his life which were defined as life before college (tap dancer at age B), life during college (Big Ten basketball player) and life after college (past president and CEO of Jovan/Beecham Cosmetics). President Meyer also announced his vision of where the Fraternity is headed in the next year and next decade. This vision he said, will not include the ' phrases "status quo" or "business as usual." Finally, President Meyer thanked Chairman of the Board H. Karl Huntoon, Past Presiden~ Samuel M. Yates, the entire Board of Directors and Executive Director Steven J. Gerber and the Delta Upsilon professional staff fOr their hard work and dedication to the Fraternity.

Dr. Karl Menninger: Belonging and Fraternity Dr. Karl Menninger, distinguished physician, teacher, lecturer, author, humanitarian and founder of The Villages, died on July 18,1990 at the age of ninetysix . Brother Menninger was initiated into Delta Upsilon at the Fraternity's Sesquicentennial Leadership Conference in 1984. The below address was given by Menninger, following his initiation ceremony . . (Reprinted from the Jan. '85 Quarterly.)

Dr. Karl A . Menninger

want to be very practical and I clinical, and tell you just what happened to me to bring me to where I am: your most recently adopted member.

Belonging is a curious relationship Belonging is a curious relationship if you stop to think about it. Do you

"belong" to that where you are? Do you "belong" to the chair? They don't belong to you, yet you've been using them. What would make them belong to you? Something legal? Something mercantile? Stop and think what belonging means. Slaves belonged. Why? Who said they belonged. The government didn't say so, or did it? In some states the slave belong and in other states he did not belong. Belonging can be geographic. It can be anatomical. Your arm belongs to you. You say it does. You consider

102

that a belonging. Does you hair belong to you? You throw it away. Stop and think for a moment what this idea of belonging is. Stop and think if you want me for your brother. You've elected me. Are you sure I'm qualified to be. I've taken the same oath you did . Now, in what way am I different from the me that was here yesterday, before the initiation ceremony? Is your organization different because I now belong to it? You see all these questions come up in the matter of social relations of all kinds. Marriage, for example - you say they belong to each other. You know what a divorce is - that's a legal separation, but that's when somebody says you are separated and you no longer belong. Do you no longer belong simply because somebody says so? Well, all these questions used to interest me a great deal. I matriculated to the University of this state, Indiana, at the small detachment of it in a northern county. That was in 1910. I remember it very well. There weren't very many of us freshmen and we were all very good friends. We freshmen went through a lot of hazing at that time, and part of the hazing was being initiated into an imaginary fraternity . . . that was, it was imaginary for them because they made up the name of it, told us they represented it and would initiate us. That was my first experience in being initiated into a non-existent fraternity, but it was fun and there was a lot of clowning about it.

Fraternity membership denied That fall, I entered another university. At this university some of my best friends were in attendance and they said, "Oh, you must get on to things now. You help fight the sophomores, and you get ready to join

the fraternity." I won't give the name but there were several, and this was one in which my best friends all had pla ns to join, hoped to join, and they all did . I didn't get an invitation, and some of them came to me and said, "We're a little embarrassed, but you know they have a peculiar rule in this fraternity. They want you, and we all want you. You know we've been friends for five years - we went to high school together and we know each other. You'll be invited in just a few days. Take it easy. We're just having a little internal trouble." "Well," I said, "you don't owe me any explanation. That's all right, I know you're all my friends. I'll join anytime." I remember them practicing the fraternity's song rather subterraneanly, and I joined in that. I learned it, and thought I'd be a member in a few weeks, but I wasn't a member in a few weeks. This began to be a worry to me. Time went on ... weeks went on. I joined the Dramatic club and the German club, and I don't know how many other clubs, and I was a rather well-known character on the campus. I had an automobile, and that was rather useful in those days and advantageous. I think the fraternity used it, I don't remember for sure, but in the meantime, I was not invited to join. "The fact is," they said, "we have a peculiar rule that one blackball can keep a man out. We've got this brother ... we can't explain it to you, but just don't be angry at us." "Angry at a fraternity?" I said. "I couldn't be angry at a fraternity." But I was and I was amazed. Then I began to think - what's the matter with me? I know there are some reason's for not being in some fraternities. Some fraternities don't take Jewish members, but I'm not Jewish. Some don't take black members (very stupid groups, I think,

DELTA UPSILON QUARTERLY • October, 1990

but they don't) but I'm not black. Perhaps I've insulted somebody or something, but I'm not a belligerent person. I haven't fought with anybody. I was a happy-go-lucky, young, college student. I fought with the freshmen, I was in the Dramatic club. This began to worry me more and more - not the disappoint of not becoming a member by the curious fact that I wasn't considered qualified. That was 75 years ago. I never joined a fraternity thereafter. I never was invited to join. I never discovered what I did that made me ineligible, but it warmed my heart when Delta Upsilon found my credentials satisfactory and considered me eligible and invited me to join with them for the first time in seventy-five years. So this is a rather sentimental and toughing and significant moment for me. In the meantime, I decided I'd have to get along without learning the joys, satisfactions and advantages of being in a fraternity, and I joined other things. It seemed to me I joined hundreds of other things, and I continued to join them. I went to another university and there I had no possible time to be in a fraternity, but my roommate was one of those lads that tried to get me into the earlier group. He went to his brothers in this university and came back and told me, "I don't want to affiliate. I don't think as they do. I don, ettthink I'm eligible at heart to join thaf'group." So he and I (he a member somewhere and 1, not) went to the university together until he had to leave.

International Club I kept joining other things. I joined something that was so significant, so much more helpful to me than any fraternity seemed to them . I joined the International Club. That was a club in which only 5 or 10 percent of Americans were admitted to membership. There were Chinese, Japanese, Koreans, Germans and French. There was a war building in Europe, and we had both German and French students, and we had exciting evening meetings in which Germans and

French would give their respective views of the progress being made (this was World War I). I remember the International Club meetings as exciting, intellectually alerting, broadening, and altogether wonderful. I learned that Japanese, Siamese and other people have charming characters. I didn't know that. I had never known any of these foreign people before. That was the best part of going to the university although I joined other clubs. I thought "Well, if I'm not going to be in a fraternity and I'm not obligated to do fraternity duties, than I can do other duties." I joined scores of things as I remember it now. When I got through medical school (of course, I joined medical fraternities and such), and went into practice, my father said, "Son, the medical profession is called a fraternity. It isn't quite the fraternity it ought to be . The doctors don't always love one another, and it is very important that they should."

"That's what I admire about Delta Upsilon. You try to love one another."

He had gone up to the Mayo Clinic, and he said, "That was the most wonderful thing I ever saw. Doctors working together - not against each other. Doctors working with a patient, each trying to help the patient, not trying to see which one could get the patient away from the other."

Fraternalism in medicine I began to realize, as I got into the medical profession and practiced a few years, that the business of practicing medicine is a solitary thing, just as it was in the old days. Doctors are pretty much loners, they don't know what to do about it. They have medical meetings. I joined the medical societies - the county society, the city society, the state society, the national

society, the British society and other foreign societies. I belonged to more medical societies than you could have stuck in your coat pocket. It was the thing to do. Of course, above all you must join the American Medical Association. These are not fraternities . The doctors want them to be, but they are not. My father said, "Why can't people, why can't doctors be brothers? Why can't they be Christian brothers? Why can't they be cooperative? Why can't they be fraternity brothers?" Well, we want to be. You hear of the medical profession sometimes as a medical union, sometimes a medical club, sometimes a medical society, but the medical profeSSional has not fully achieved the brotherhood it wants to and must. And, not only the medical profession, but a good may other human beings. I don't know if legal associations even attempt to be fraternities. I am a member of the American Psychological Associations -lots of them. I don't think we even pretend to be a fraternity. That's what I admired about Delta Upsilon. You try to love one another. I think that's wonderful. I think that's beautiful. I think that is essential. I don't need to remind you that the great moral leaders of the world have said time and time again, "Love one another. Love even your enemies, but don't hate people. Get together and love each other, and try to help each other." Well, when I heard about this fraternity I began to think a little differently. I didn't think college fraternities had done much better than the doctors. I thought it seemed to me they had some difficulty in loving even all their own members let alone some of their competitive organizations. I heard about Delta Upsilon from your International President, Terry Bullock, and I heard you stemmed from a group of men who said, " The way fraternities are going doesn't suit us, and we don't like them. We don't like their snobbishness. We don't like their secrecy. We don't like the things they do, and we want to have a different kind of group." I read the Delta Upsilon l5D-year history Challenge, Conflict and Change

Meyer: "Focus on priorities and move forward" In August, Brother Richard E. Meyer, Michigan '61, was elected President of Delta Upsilon Fraternity. He is an entrepreneur and has earned recognition as a leader, pioneer and money-maker in every industry in which he has been involved. Brother Meyer is the former President and CEO of his own advertising agency, of lovan/Beecham Cosmetics, Inc, and of his own entertainment company. He and his wife, lulia, reside in Newport Beach, CA.

where we're heading and how we're going to get there. And, we'll have to identify some control factors in order to measure our progress along the way. A five-year plan should help this happen. Risk Management We need a written, well-developed Risk Management Program which specifies responsibility and accountability at all levels of the Fraternity. In my opinion, we are behind in this area, and we'd better catch up fast.

Dear Brothers:

The President's Report I am deeply honored to have been asked to serve as President of our Fraternity at this time, and I consider the opportunity to be both a privilege and a challenge. In previous reports, you have been made aware of a shopping list of challenges which face our Fraternity and all other fraternities. As I see it, in some areas we are at a critical crossroads, and we have to make some changes. We have to correct a few areas. And, we must take action now! I believe it is incumbent upon us to focus on priorities and move forward. There are four key areas in which I'm personally going to devote extra effort during this coming year: (1) Long-range Strategic Planning (2) Insurance and Risk Management (3) Internal and External Growth (4) Fraternity Finances Here's what I think is needed for each area, and why. Long-range Planning We need a written, rolling, long-range (5-year) plan containing detailed specifics in terms of stratagem and financial planning. If we, as a leading International Fraternity, are to continue to pass along the enriching experience of strongly principled fraternity life, we have to know where we are,

financial well-being. Our internal growth must be improved, and, to this end, a Membership Development Program has been put into action. It should help, but more alumni involvement is needed at the local alumni chapter level and in the formation of more metroarea alumni clubs. Time and Money Perhaps the most critical area of need is in the area of Fraternity Finances. This is inseparable from the need for increased voluntary participation from every DU Brother. It is now vital that more of us give'generously of our time and increase our annual financial support of the Fraternity. With that in mind, I invite you to join me in The President's Club, today. You and I have a very personal stake in the future well-being of our Fraternity. We will be stronger, more productive, and will progress this year because of the prior and continuing efforts of your Board members, your Headquarters staff, and many caring and sharing Brothers. We cannot afford "status quo" or "business as usual." Problems and issues must and will be dealt with directly. Opinions must and will be voiced. And action must and will replace concern. I invite you to join us by participating in this worthwhile cause. I'm certain you realize that success isn't the measure of a Delta Upsilon Brother, but that effort is! Please help me and your Board of Directors set new and higrer standards of excellence for our Fraternity. Together we can build upon the solid, positive foundation that is Delta Upsilon .. . the

To be a leading fraternity on important issues, it's vital that we stop talking about potential disasters in the problem areas of hazing, alcohol abuse, discrimination, sexual harassment, elitism and antiintellectualism, and take positive action to insure our Fraternity against them. There is no immaculate conception when it comes to disasters in these areas! We've talked about weaknesses of human nature long enough. They will fester, grow and kill us if we remain silent, anonymous or passive. We simply must change with the times or surely we will experience disaster and be responsible for our own dissolution. A well conceived Risk Management Program which is embraceable and enforceable will help minimize our exposure in this area. We may never arrive at a perfect solution for all our dilemma, but you and I will never be absolved from the responsibility of trying! Fraternity Growth We need both internal and external growth; that is we need to best Fraternity in the world! increase the sizes of our chapters and we need more of them. We also Fraternally, need more metro-area alumni clubs and more active alumni chapters. Our external growth has been progressing well over the last few DickMeyer years, but our average chapter size President is declining. This is negatively impacting our programs and our

unable to count gifts to individual chapter solicitations. On the chapter Top Twenty list, we have a new leading chapter. Purdue regains the top spot, after falling behind Syracuse last year, with a total of 118 contributors. Syracuse and Iowa State tied in 1989-90 for second place with 104 givers each. Indiana, in fourth place this academic year, also had over 100 alumni donors. The chart below shows the Top Twenty chapters, followed by last year's rank and number of total givers for 1989-90. If you have not given and would like to, use the postage paid envelope in this issue of the Quarterly, to show your support for Delta Upsilon educational programs throughout the continent.

O n e of Frederic Remington's best known and dramatic works - "The Rattlesnake" depicts in vivid detail the classic moment as horse and rider encounter a startled snake, while on the trail. The few original bronzes, made by Remington in 1905, are rare and have sold at auction for over $135,000. Now this 13 size reproduction is available for the unusual offering price of only $195.00 per SCUlpture. The fine reproduction was produced under the direct supervision of Ms. Christine Roussel - former Director of the Reproduction Studio of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and creator of fine Remington reproductions for The Nelson Rocl, efeller Collection. Each Rattlesnake replica will be created in coldcast bronze - a medium that enables the casting of finer detail than the traditional hot-cast method. Every sculpture will be individually cast from a blend of powdered bronze and resins. Once the casting is completed, it will be finished with a rich patina, similar to the original. Each Remington Rattlesnake will be serially numbered and hallmarked. The edition will be limited to 9500 pieces and after that, all molds will be destroyed forever. To reserve this important Remington reproduction, simply return the application. No payment need accompany your order at this time. and I read it all. I said, "Well, that's a fraternity that one might have some satisfaction belonging to because it's tried to improve." And, what am I doing trying to improve? I organized several medical societies. I organized fraternities, only they weren't very fraternal- some of them broke up because of the fighting. I organized fraternities that would take the place of the ones that didn't want me when I was in college, which I felt so bad about I felt, I had to do something about it, and that's what I did. That's a rough summary of it, but I discovered there were some people that were a lot worse off by not belonging to things than I was and some of my doctor friends were. I discovered it through a lawyer who came to my office one day and said, "Doctor, you treat lots of patients and you send some patients to institutions?" I said, "Yes." He said, "And you treat some of them in your office?" _ I said, "Yes." Then he said, "But I have a fellow that isn't a patient, yet I want you to send him somewhere." "Why?" I asked. He said, "He doesn't belong to anything. He doesn't have any connections. One of his parents is in the state hospital and one of them had disappeared, but this is a bright young fellow. Where can I send him that somebody will love him?" "Well," I said, "the welfare department of the state places some individuals in adoption or in temporary care in various families, but they don't get to remain there more than a month or two, sometimes a year, and the family changes plans and they get rid of them and they have to be placed again. Most of them we place five or six times. Five or six times they're offered parents and all the things that belong to a family and they lose them, but let me talk to him." He said, "You can, but it won't do any good because what you need to do is talk to me and tell me where to send him. I'll try to send him there." I said, "Maybe there isn't any place, but we'll try." We didn't find any place, so I said, "Lets make a place. If a man's heart fails him we sometimes give him an artificial heart. If a man's knee gives

out, they build him an artificial knee. Let's build an artificial family for him. Let's get somebody that will play mother, and let's find a place where he can live with somebody that loves him, and never have to leave. Let's not say, "Well, the folks changed their minds now. You have to get out and we'll get somebody else." I said, I know what let's do. Let's build a log cabin and have his help to do it and so on. The parents will love it, and we'll get some people that would like to supervise him." "No," he said, "you can't do that because the welfare department won't allow our wards to live in log cabins. They've got to live in something nicer than that." I thought that was a ridiculous distinction, but said, "All right, we'll find something better." Then I asked him, "This is a rare circumstance, isn't it?"

"Let's build an artificial family for him. Let's get somebody that will play mother ..." He replied, "Doctor, while you're busy with these sick people, I'll tell you something. There are 200 kids in this town like this." I said, "Well, you've got 200 people who are waiting to have somebody take them into their home, into their fraternity as it were, and teach them to keep their shirt buttoned, to brush their hair, and go the right direction in many social things." He said, " We have 200 kids waiting right now in this little town of ours, let alone all the other parts of the state." I had no idea there were so many homeless, or as the lawyers call it "at risk" children who haven't anybody to be responsible for them and to love then, care for them and want them. I thought my patients were pretty numerous, but the judge told me that sick people are pretty numerous, but these lonely and neglected, abandoned, deserted, mistreated children are more frequent, more numerous. That's the way I started with this thing called The Villages.

DELTA UPSILON QUARTERY • October, 1990

My brother died about that time in my life and he was my partner. My brother was very interested in taking care of these boys. He was a Boy Scout leader, he was one of the national leaders, and you can imagine how much interested he was in these children. But he said, "We haven't got time to do it. We haven't got the place. We haven't got the staff." I said, "Somebody has got to find the staff." So we found some people, and we started one cottage for boys. We said we'd limit it to ten even though there were 200. Then a patient of mine whose daughter I had treated asked, "What are you going to do about the girls." I asked, "Are there that many abandoned girls, homeless girls, abused girls?" (At that time we didn't realize how may bad family situations there were where there is so much cruelty and even sexual abuse of children.) She replied, "I'll give you the money for another house for the girls." The state said, "Dr. Karl, please take it because we so much need a place like that to put people, and you folks run it." That's the way we started. Another friend of mine said, "I'll give you money for another house because that's a great thing. That's the most progressive kind of preventing wasted lives of children that I know of." So another friend gave another cottage, and then we had five. Somebody called it a "village." It wasn't a village exactly - just five different cottages in Topeka. Then we began to put them in other cities. Some in Lawrence and some in several cities in Indiana. The Eli Lilly Company has built several cottages in Indiana. We're very proud of our Indiana villages, and we have some others affiliated in other states. Then my friend said, "Don't you know Delta Upsilon might be interested in that kind of a thing because they too, are concerned about the people who don't really get to belong to groups where they should. And, I got to thinking about it and got to

thinking that most people I've tried to help all my life are people who didn't seem to belong at first. They seemed to be ugly ducklings, they seemed to be different, they seemed to be unreachable or else in some way or another totally deserted. I began to think that most of my life I'd been trying to treat those people, but we need to get them a little earlier in childhood where may of them have spent lives or cruelty and lives of desertion, in lives of no support, in lives of having their self confidence run down. What flashes into my mind is a softball game. I can see right now one of the kids in a rather crucial play drops the ball, and who shouts from the sidelines, "Oh you mutt, why don't you hold onto the ball when you get it?" It was his father. Now imagine this humiliated, disappointed kid who's dining his best to get a standing with the team and doing well helping them win a game being bawled out for his failure by his father right in front of everybody. A great deal of cruelty to children is not done with razor straps and clubs, it is done with people's tongues humiliating and belittling children day after day.

Most of our girls have had sexual approaches from the people they ought to have gotten protection from - their brothers, their father and their mother's lovers. We've been at this villages business for quite a few years now, and it appealed to the officers of your Fraternity. They came to look at us. I want to tell you that last night I overheard a discussion in one of your forums on what we can do in our fraternity days to get a better start and a greater appreciation of our post-college, post-university years. It was a wonderful teaching session. I learned a lot, and I was truly delighted with it.

and if they want to be interested in The Villages, I'm glad that they do." Your newest member is proud he joined a fraternity that has comparable ideals in its encouragement and development of fraternal life. Maybe there should be only one fraternity in the world - Delta Upsilon, because what you believe in seems to me to be what we should all believe in. Now maybe I'm just accusing you of being practicing Christians, and maybe you're not Christians. I hope you have some Jewish members, I hope you have some black members because, you know, white Anglo-Saxon males are not the only people who believe in fraternity and in development. After 75 years of thinking not much good can come out of a fraternity, I've changed my mind. Thank you for listening to me, and carryon what you're doing. Try to retain these fine leaders you've got, and remember how important belonging is, how everybody needs it. You can't belong one day and not belong the next. You've got to belong all the time in the human race.

The music is transmitted by FM radio waves to the speakers. NO SPEAKER WIRES ARE NEEDED! And the sound is great, with deep, rich bass and crystal clear highs.

SUPERIOR FEATURES The DATA WAVE Speaker system is of the highest quality design. The 8.5 x 4.5 x 4.5 inch acoustically constructed cabinet, with its full range 4 inch driver mounted on the top, provides a 360 degree surround sound pattern. This full range speaker delivers music of the highest quality. These wireless speakers operate either on 4C batteries or with an AC adaptor and have their own built-in receiver and amplifier, capturing your stereo's music anywhere in or around your home in a 150 foot radius of the transmitter.

You will find the design of these speakers opens all kinds of possibilities for you to enjoy your favorite music anywhere, without wires. Since the speakers have their own built-in amplifier, you can use them with any sound source such as a TV, walkman radio or your stereo receiver by simply plugging in the transmitter and switching on the speaker. These state-of-the-art speakers simply tap into the signal your stereo already generates, so they will not affect your stereo in any way and cannot be blown out. The transmitter combines both the right and left channels of your stereo, giving you full, rich high fidelity sound.

NOTE: SPECIAL SAVINGS ON UNFRAMED PRINTS Here are nine of the most difficult-if not impossible-holes for any golfer to play, (If, of course, they existed!)

of the tough holes you've had to play at one time and another-as well as at one place and another!

Rib your friends when they tell you of the difficult holes they've played, by hanging these fascinating prints of Chapman's Infamous Golf Holes in your club's locker room, or ask the bartender to put them up behind the bar, or hang them in your own rumpus room to spin a preposterous tale

Prints measure 18"x24", Each comes with a hilarious description of how difficult it is to "play" the particular hole shown. These have been so popular we're now out of framed prints. All we can offer are unframed prints-so we are offering any

four prints for $79,95 a saving of $3,96 a print (if you could buy them separately) or $15,84, Or $149,95 if you order all 9 - a saving of $7 ,29 a print, or $65.60. If you don't find these Infamous Golf Holes as much fun as countless golfers have found them for years, return them within ten days and we'll refund what you paid for them, 漏 1988 P.P.
