As Neil Sedaka (remember him?) once said, “Breakin’ up is hard to do.” Whether it’s personal or political, couples or countries, or gender issues that are starting earlier than ever, breaking up seems to be the order of the day. But we’ve seen tough times before, and we’ll pull through again with true British grit. Take Julia Rawlinson and Emma Scott’s Link Café and the great work they’re doing to support local victims of domestic violence (pg49). When making up is no longer an option, smooth your divorce with expert advice from our new legal eagles Peacock & Co (pg36). Single-sex or co-ed schooling? To find out what’s right for your child turn to The Parent Practice (pg33) kindly sponsored by communityminded Tennison Property. Whatever happens, our resident psychologist Pam Custers is always there to pick up the pieces. But it’s not all doom and gloom. Merton’s business world is thriving, and Wimbledon is host to many company headquarters - see our Merton Best award winners (pg30). There’s plenty to brighten up our lives in the New Year with fashion, furniture, beauty and fitness to keep us looking and feeling gorgeous (see new Fitness Space based on your DNA! pg47) and a spread of great eateries to tempt us too. What more could we want this winter? So keep warm and cuddle up with your Darling! PS I am thrilled to have won the first Andrew Wakefield Award this year. Thank you all for your love and support. inspiring woman I have to ask (because I loved the TV show), what was it like to appear on an episode of Mad Men?

Carmela with director Marc Masterson at South Coast Repertory, California

When I first moved to New York and started Juilliard, my mother and I watched one of the early episodes together. We were both just sitting there agape. What is this amazing new series?! The costumes! The actors! The elegance of the whole piece! And we had this moment where we looked at each other and she said, “Carmela, you’re going to be on this show - you do realize that right?” I think we both knew then that in some capacity, big or small, that series was going to have an impact on my life. And it absolutely did. It was a dream realized. What play has made a lasting impression on you?

Photo taken by photographer Cristina Schek

Carmela with parents, Cynthia & Harry

There have been many that have been poignant at different moments in my life. Ibsen’s, A Doll’s House, continues to fascinate me. Most recently I saw Girl from the North Country at the Old Vic and was deeply moved. I think the profound thing about the music and lyrics of Bob Dylan is that it resonates at all ages and stages of life. Who are your literary and artistic heroes? Audrey Hepburn because she was the embodiment of grace. Sylvia Plath because she wrote from a place of deep and vivid emotion with unapologetic passion. Maya Angelou because she spoke the truth.

A PETITE BRAND MAKING BIG NEWS

Darling readers may recall reading in our Spring issue about a new petite brand of womenswear, Jennifer Anne. We caught up recently with the local founder Jennifer Ison How have the first six months been since the launch of your petite brand? “It has been really exciting. The clothes have been selling well and we have had fantastic press coverage. In week one we had our lovely V-neck Beiwen dress featured in Woman and Home and that was followed up by The Independent Online placing Jennifer Anne as one of the top high-end petite brands in the UK. Marie Claire clearly liked our Anna Shirt Dress as they have featured it twice! I think potential customers are reassured by a new brand being recognised by fashion journalists and it has certainly attracted new customers.”

“We offer a try-before-you-buy service and we will take the clothes to the customer’s home or office!” Are you still just selling your range online? “While many customers are perfectly happy to order online, others prefer the possibility of trying on the clothes. Since the summer the collection has been available at Gallery 5, a fabulous boutique in Islington. We also offer a try-beforeyou-buy service, where for a small charge we will take the clothes to the customer’s home or office. One new development that I am really delighted about, came through an introduction from your Editor Karine Torr to Caroline Randell, owner and founder of the eponymous lingerie shop in Wimbledon Village. Caroline loved our petite range and was happy for me to have appointments for Jennifer Anne customers in her beautiful shop.” Jennifer Anne The Petite Collection jennifer-anne.co.uk

OFFER .................................................................................................................................................................... If Darling readers would like to try on any of the Jennifer Anne Petite clothes, they should let the Jennifer Anne team know which styles they would like to try on and we will arrange for these to be brought to Caroline Randell’s shop for a bespoke appointment. There is no charge for this service and as a special welcome to Darling readers, they will receive a 10% reduction for any Jennifer Anne purchases made at the boutique before 1 April 2018. We look forward to meeting petite Darling readers very soon.

“YOU’RE LOOKING GREAT!”

It’s what we all want to hear. Naked Health Medispa could help to make this a reality

I

t makes us feel good when people compliment us, doesn’t it? Often said following a holiday or when we’ve had a restful time. But how can we make sure people are saying this all year round?

before

Louise Stewart

after

Skin looks healthy when it’s fresh and glowing, when it looks firm and the pigment is evenly distributed, when it’s luminous and not too red. Some people are genetically blessed but most of us need a little help to achieve a more youthful look. It’s especially important for those who have spent too much time in the sun, have been ill or under considerable stress. Where do you start when there’s a bewildering array of choices? The best way to help you decide is to book a personal consultation with an experienced skin therapist. This is an opportunity to focus on YOU, review your home care regime, prioritise the results you are after and decide on a gradual or radical process. You can also consider your budget. Some will prefer something costly but quick while others prefer a more reasonable and gradual approach. Two light based options are IPL and LED. You can’t beat IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatment for evening out pigmentation often with remarkable and rapid results. After the first session the skin becomes red and the pigmentation marks (some of which were hidden in the deep layers of the skin) are brought to the surface creating dark brown patches which, turn crusty. These after effects reduce gradually during the following week and your skin then starts looking fresher, younger and more springy. Sometimes subsequent treatment is needed but the after effects are less noticeable each time. You need to plan ahead. Keep a clear diary and make sure that you have a good concealing make-up.

You can pop to the shops or do the school run but want to avoid being scrutinised and certainly don’t go partying. Dermalux LED Phototherapy involves relaxing whilst your skin is bathed in beneficial light energy which enables the stimulated skin cells to function better and regenerate faster. It can be programmed to help with varying conditions from ageing lines and wrinkles to rosacea and acne. For more information and to book your consultation visit nakedhealth.co.uk or call 020 8944 5454 for your free consultation.

Pam Custers

Help! My partner

refuses couples counselling

Pam Custers explains

S

ometimes with the best will in the world, our partner refuses to do couples therapy. Your relationship is in trouble and you know that the time has come to make changes. You asked nicely, you cajoled but they just won’t budge.

“Taking personal responsibility may feel unbalanced but will have an impact on your relationship” There are a number of reasons they may not want to join you: too busy, tried it before and it didn’t work, things will just blow over or perhaps they can’t see how a stranger can help. Before you think you’re sunk, there is another way! Attend by yourself. Dragging a reluctant partner to therapy may easily derail and sabotage the process. It may be time for an empowering rethink. Going for therapy shows that you are prepared to do whatever it takes. Relationship issues don’t belong to “the relationship” for which you both are equally responsible. Getting support breaks the deadlock when in trouble. Taking personal responsibility may feel unbalanced but will have an impact on your relationship. As you support yourself in making healthy changes in your relationship, so your partner will follow suit.

LEBANESE CUISINE AT ITS BEST

A

Editor Karine Torr meets the driving force behind Aya

s I set off one warm afternoon in autumn to meet Amira Mahfouz, the co-owner of Aya Lebanese Cuisine, I had no idea of the delights that were awaiting me. Aya means ‘wonderful’, ‘amazing’ or ‘miracle’ in Arabic (named after her daughter who is now 12) and so my expectations were high! Amira welcomed me with open arms and as we waited for our food to arrive I had a chance to contemplate my surrounds. Bearing in mind a terrible fire broke out in the building in 2015 the restaurant has been beautifully restored and you could be sitting in the middle of sunny Beirut, gazing up to the stained glass ceiling window, admiring a beautiful and intricate mosaic picture or puffing slowly on a shisha pipe, contemplating your existence. There’s a separate space for private dining or parties and different nooks depending on the level of romance you are after. I was enthralled by Amira’s stories and enthusiasm. She and her husband Ali are utterly charming hosts and are there most evenings to welcome their guests and check that things are running smoothly, as they have done for eight years now, having started as a tiny takeaway around the corner in 1994. Now they run the award winning main restaurant (Aya), two bustling takeaways on The Broadway and Merton High Street with another Aya restaurant opening in Streatham soon. Watch this space! With the scene set by quiet Arabic music the food began to arrive at the table. So fresh, so delicious, so much! My favourites Tabouleh, Fattoush (a special Lebanese salad with fried or toasted pieces of Arabic flat bread) and my best of all, Babaghanoush. Then some exotic chicken and lamb dishes appeared, made on a real charcoal grill. They also have vegan and lots of vegetarian options. No alcohol is on offer but one can bring one’s own and there is generously no corkage fee. A miracle? Find out for yourself. ayacuisine.com Aya Cuisine 195-197 Merton Rd | Aya Takeaway 72 The Broadway | Aya Cuisine 2 24 Merton High St 020 8417 0606

Fat Freezing in Wimbledon Get the body you want and keep it

A

What they say

s we come into the festive period followed by the New Year and all that brings, we want to look our best before our thoughts turn to January and the new healthy plans we all have.

“Very nice team that explained the procedure clearly and could answer all the questions I had. I can see a difference on my legs and stomach already. I can’t wait to see the final result” Laura 32, London

What is it?

Is there a way to have both we ask, it seems there is with fat freezing. If you have not heard about fat freezing, it’s a process where local areas of stubborn fat are frozen. Most people cite the stomach, muffin tops and thighs as their problem areas. Once frozen, the fat cells are killed off and expelled from the body over 90 days. Could this be the answer we have all been looking for? Available to both women and men, the company behind these treatments say ‘if you can squeeze it we can freeze it.’

So what happens on the day?

Based at the popular Radiance Clinic on Kingston Road, you will be welcomed by Shawn and her team before you go through for your initial free consultation. Here the treatment is explained in full and you discuss the area you wish to be treated. Once this is all agreed you lie back and the protective membrane is placed on you. Next the treatment heads are positioned and turned on. They suck up the stubborn fat and start to freeze it. The treatment lasts for just 30 minutes and you are then treated to a lymphatic massage to break down the now dead frozen fat cells.

After care

After your treatment, you are issued with some additional hints and tips including the Eskimo nutrition plan to increase the benefits of the fat freezing treatment. Over the next 90 days, the body naturally expels the dead frozen fat cells and you really start to see the results within 7-14 days of your treatment.

DAVID LLOYD CLUB NEWS Discover your “Why?” at David Lloyd

T

he New Year is fast approaching which inevitably means thoughts start to turn to resolutions and goals for 2018, many of which will be fitness related. These goals, powerful as they may seem at the moment of decision, invariably lose their attraction when the alarm goes off at 5am on a cold February morning. It is all too easy to switch off the alarm and grab another 30 minutes in your warm, cosy, safe environment

rather than face the somewhat more challenging option of pushing yourself at the gym. That is unless you understand your ‘why’. Your ‘why’ is the underlying factor that will push you to come to the club and train when you would rather sit at home in front of the fire, and it is ultimately what will make you accomplish those things that you never thought possible.

programme will help you to understand the reasons your goals are important to you, why you have joined the club and will give you that extra motivation needed to achieve them. Delivered by our expert team of personal trainers, it is a great way to make 2018 the year of positive change!

Judo Olympian opens yoga studio in new martial arts academy

ew people would put fighting and yoga together and yet that’s exactly what academy owner, martial artist and Olympic silver medalist Ray Stevens has done. On the first floor of his custom-fitted dojo in Raynes Park you’ll find a ‘Yogashala’ hidden away from the action of the martial arts area. The academy’s three different instructors each teach a distinct style in the Zen minimalist yoga studio – class numbers are kept small to ensure every student gets individual attention. • Bhavin Thakker has been teaching yoga for 17 years, mentored by Bharat and also a certified yoga instructor from Swami Vivekananda Yoga Institute in India. • Huma has over 5 years teaching experience in Astanga Vinyasa Yoga and Moon Sequence, taught by world renowned Brian Cooper and Matthew Sweeney. Her students state she adapts the class individually, inspiring each one of them to achieve more, every class. • Ashim Bhalla is one of only fifteen teachers trained by Manoharan Subramanium a.k.a. ‘Mano’ (renowned for his discipline, intensity, and spirituality) in his unique style of Hatha yoga. Whether you’re a complete beginner drawn by the countless health benefits or an experienced practitioner wishing to deepen their practice, the Ray Stevens Academy Yoga Studio is a space to explore ancient wisdom for modern life. raystevensacademy.co.uk/yoga T: 07552 774 111

eganism is on the rise, according to The Guardian who reported that in 2006, 150 000 people in the UK chose a plant-based diet and in 2016 that rose to 542 000, an increase of 350%, especially under 34 year olds. Lu-Ma is a whole-food, vegan/vegetarian café inside the Justin James Hotel Wimbledon with a lovely outside area which caters to conscious eaters and the current food trend. The cafe, now in its third year, has a delicious, nutritious menu that offers an extensive range of gluten free, vegan and vegetarian options using mainly organic, and where possible, locally sourced produce. It was created by mother and daughter team, Lucy and Maria, who are passionate about food and the benefits it can bring to health and wellbeing. After completing a Macrobiotic training course some six years ago, and feeling a noticeable improvement in their general health, they both felt it would be great to have a place where people can eat a good, healthier meal without compromising taste or nutrition. Enter Angela Agrati Prange, a highly experienced whole-food chef who has been a consultant to Lu-Ma for many years, who has recently joined the team. Angela has a lifetime’s experience

working at prestigious detox centres, well-being retreats and spa centres. She will have many treats in store for Lu-Ma fans. Lu-Ma is now open for dinner every first and third Friday of the month. With a wide range of vegan and non-vegan dishes, catering especially for those with food intolerances or those who need gluten-free options, it’s a great night out for everyone with a healthy taste. Lu-Ma is a licensed cafe that offers private hire for groups of up to 35, an ideal place to host your Christmas party, birthday party, baby shower or other special occasions. MIXED SCHOOLS OR SINGLE SEX - WHAT’S BEST? Asks Ellaine Halligan from The Parent Practice. Her new book “My Child’s Different” is due out next year

A

t The Parent Practice we frequently encounter clients who insist their child has to get into a certain school, because it’s the BEST. In fact parents need to find a school that is suited to their child’s needs, academic and otherwise. The same argument applies to this debate. To advocate that either single-sex or co-ed schools are ‘best’ is to fail to see our children as unique individuals. You may also have different views on single sex or co-ed in primary and secondary schools. The better question is how does a particular school treat your individual child? My dyslexic son attended a boys’ special needs school. The ability to tap into the huge array of creative technical subjects has ensured he entered adult life with a vast array of life skills and an entrepreneurial spirit. My daughter, having been in a girls’ secondary school, found it emotionally intense, with an unhealthy obsession on looks and friendship issues rife. After declaring she wanted fresh air, fun and to play more golf, I couldn’t disagree. She ended up at a mixed boarding school. What are the pros and cons? • The league tables’ top results are dominated by single sex secondary schools. It seems that free from the distraction of the opposite gender, children are free to concentrate on pure academics. But is there a cost? Does the school emphasise a holistic approach to education? Helen Fraser CE of the Girls’ Day School Trust argues that “single-sex schools are equipping the women of the future with excellent academic credentials” (Telegraph,

shop local

Jan 2016) but I can’t help thinking that maybe we need to look past academic attainment and chose an environment where children can be supported to be the best version of themselves. • Some research indicates that segregation of sexes increases gender stereotyping and given the many accounts of sexual harassment in the workplace, you have to wonder whether institutionalised sexism begins at school. • It’s not the norm in our society for the sexes to be segregated. In the real world being able to connect and communicate, mix with ease and develop friendships is a healthy and normal part of life. theparentpractice.com

D-I-V-O-R-C-E A better way to divorce or separate with Caroline Mills from Peacock & Co Solicitors in Wimbledon Village

T

here are many issues that will need to be resolved once the difficult decision to separate has been taken. How will we arrange things for the children? What about the finances? What will we do about the family home? Who is going to apply for Divorce? Often the thought of an acrimonious battle is more than a couple can take at such a difficult time. However, there are alternatives to the traditional court process, which can be used to settle differences. Family mediation is one of the most common

36 winter 2017/18 | darlingmagazine.co.uk

alternative forms of dispute resolution for separating couples; in fact you now cannot take a case to court unless you have first explored whether mediation could assist. Even if the court process has been commenced or solicitors instructed to negotiate on your behalf, mediation can still be used as an effective tool to narrow the issues between you. A family mediator is a neutral third party who is trained to help a couple resolve issues surrounding their separation, such as ďŹ nances and the children. Mediation can also assist grandparents and other family members who may be involved closely with the family.

PEACOCK & CO Solicitors

There is usually an initial one to one meeting to assess suitability for mediation and then the mediator will arrange a joint session with both clients. Each session should be tailored to suit the particular issues of each couple accordingly, the number of mediation sessions necessary will depend on the volume and complexity of the issues being discussed. What are the benefits of mediation? • Mediation gives the parties the power to address issues between themselves and make their own solutions for dealing with matters rather than having a decision ordered by the court. • Mediation provides a controlled and managed environment to discuss difficult issues. • All aspects of separation can be covered in mediation - finances, children and the divorce, rather than potentially having separate court proceedings for each issue. • By communicating with each other directly, mediation can help people to move on from the relationship with dignity and look ahead to the future, rather than dwelling too heavily on the past. • Mediation is child-focused and the welfare of the children is put at the forefront of any discussions. • Mediation is generally less expensive as the mediator’s hourly rate will be split between the clients. • Mediation is often quicker than negotiations through solicitors or the court

shop local

process. Provided all parties are available, and the information needed to progress is gathered efficiently, sessions can take place at a much swifter pace if so desired. Most mediators will recommend that clients also retain the services of a solicitor in the background. Once both parties are content with the proposals the mediator will prepare a clear summary for them called a Memorandum of Understanding. The mediator will also provide a summary of the financial information (an Open Financial Statement) if the finances have been discussed. The parties can then review the paperwork with their solicitors. After legal advice has been received and if both parties are still happy with the proposals, the solicitors will convert the summary into a legally binding document and oversee any necessary implementation. Peacock & Co was founded in Wimbledon Village in 1991, we have since gained a reputation for providing clear, practical and reliable legal advice throughout South West London. As a result, we have built a strong base of loyal clients, many of whom have been kind enough to recommend our services to others. Most of our new clients come to us by personal referral either from existing clients or fellow professionals such as accountants, financial advisors, surveyors and estate agents. In 2017, we opened a second office in Epsom enabling us to offer our approachable service to clients from further afield, particularly in Surrey. peacock-law.co.uk E: caroline@peacock-law.co.uk

HEART & SOUL of your home

The Painted Furniture Co – beautifully British built just for you

A

Surrey showroom in Hampton Wick. With beautiful collections of high-quality bedroom, living and dining furniture, they are a first-stop for anyone looking for stunning painted pieces.

"We always strived to have something a little different in our Cotswolds showroom”, says Adam, “and, much as we love the oak furniture we grew up with, we were really struggling to bring some life and colour back into the showroom, everything was just a bit… well, brown!

Whether your style is bold and bright or soft and subtle, a freshly painted dresser, sideboard or table will revive your interiors and introduce a splash of your favourite hues to your home. Whatever your room’s décor, our passion is in providing you with a piece of furniture that is just what you were looking for, and is built to last a lifetime.

dam & Rosy Brown, the founders of the Painted Furniture Company, have been in the furniture and interiors business for many years, but the brand was really launched in 2010, when one afternoon they got a bit bored....

Just for fun we asked a supplier to paint one of our bestselling pieces in a nice grey green, the colour we always called the ‘Cotswolds window frame’ colour, just to see what it looked like. The results were stunning! We now had a collection of furniture which we knew was properly made and great quality, but we could now have some fun offering it in all sorts of colours.” The Painted Furniture Company, originally from Cirencester in the heart of the Cotswolds, have recently opened their first South West London and 40

winter 2017/18 | darlingmagazine.co.uk

When it comes to paint colour; the choice is yours. We have a huge range of colours as standard, each carefully chosen to compliment a modern colour scheme from classic whites to striking greys.

Based in South West London, David Hur Design offers a complete interior design service from contemporary through to classic. Handmade furniture, upholstery, kitchens, curtains, carpeting and decorating. We understand our clients’ needs to create tranquil yet practical solutions for everyday living.

“In an age of mass production, we are proud to be hand building our timeless classic furniture here in the UK and keeping traditional hand crafting techniques alive.” “Producing good painted furniture is much more complicated than simply producing furniture and painting it. Over the years, we have developed the expertise, the contacts and the experience to ensure we supply our customers with the highest quality furniture,” comments Rosy Brown, Managing Director at The Painted Furniture Company. “For any product to be included in our furniture collections it must be the best of breed and offer a great value price point too.” The customizable collections allow for complete versatility in terms of colour and sizing. So, whether you’re looking for a sideboard to fit perfectly in the nook under the stairs, or a low wardrobe to fit under the eaves, they'll be pleased to provide something that fits your vision perfectly. “Whilst our website has helped us grow to be probably the largest specialist retailer of painted furniture in the UK, that wouldn’t have happened without the backup of a real showroom where customers can see a wide range of our collections, in a range of colour options, displayed in beautiful room settings. We are fully committed to keeping a high street presence for the business. The opening of our showroom in Kingston seemed an obvious choice for us and we’ve been delighted by the reception so far.

IT COULDN’T HAPPEN HERE Darling Editor chats to Julia Rawlinson, co-founder of local service, The Link Café, which is supporting women fleeing domestic violence in Merton “DV has the effect of a stone thrown into a lake, the ripples go on and on. Some of the scars are physical and can be seen by the many but the emotional ones are hidden, buried deep within until something triggers them; a smell, a sound, a behaviour. The legacy of DV never goes away even if the perpetrator does, although often they don’t. It’s relentless for the individual and yet so often we stand in awe of these women, with tears in our eyes, recognising we have learnt so much from them.” Emma Scott co-founder The Link Café

T

hink you know what a victim of domestic violence looks like? Think again. Forget the stereotype. She looks like any one of us. Every colour, ethnicity, socio-economic background: DV (domestic violence) is evenly spread across them all. I have been supporting women in the DV arena for nearly 20 years. It’s a passion; I’m addicted. I met Emma Scott from the Salvation Army three years ago. We’d recognised the need to support DV ‘victims’ (some prefer the word ‘survivors’ but to me that implies that the abuse is over; the consequences and long-term effects are rarely over) in the community, a ‘women to women’ approach, which required a local base to meet. We wanted to get involved at a practical level, knee-deep, sleeves rolled up, so The Link Café (TLC) was born. We realised that ‘sign-posting’ our ladies to the different DV professionals and government agencies would achieve the most efficient outcomes, whilst mentoring them at TLC would provide a safe space for them to meet. We are inundated with work now - which of course is good and bad!

shop local

Mentoring requires us to be non-judgmental, good listeners, enthusiastic, encourage self-belief and build self-esteem, be approachable, creative and find solutions. When I work with ladies I only focus on the way forward; not on where they’ve been or what happened in the past as that’s too painful for them. I give them self-development exercises which encourages ownership of their own outcomes. I am quite resourceful (I worry I will run out of friends as I’m always scrounging second-hand goods, funding, help… please don’t turn the other way when you see me!). I have joined local websites and drive round SW19 and SW20 picking up furniture, household goods, clothes and baby items, squeezing them into my car (I need a van!), and delivering them to our ladies. If you are reading this article and something is resonating and you want to help, or perhaps it’s uncomfortably familiar, the first step is to share and look to other women for support. julia.rawlinson@salvationarmy.org.uk emma.scott@salvationarmy.org.uk We’d love to hear from you.

LOCAL GOLFER JANE BRITTON WINS UK

CHAMPIONSHIP

L

ocal Wimbledon Common Golf Club member Jane Britton has become the UK National Public Course Championship Ladies Champion playing on the prestigious Eden Course at St Andrews.

Jane Britton (left), our Lady Vice Captain has become the UK National Public Course Championship Ladies Champion. She played at St Andrews with fellow member Virginia Marin (right)

Jane, the club’s current Lady Vice-Captain took up golf 3 years ago and qualified through club and regional rounds to make the finals alongside club member Virginia Marin who won the regional round in Hertfordshire earlier this year.

With Madge Corbitt, Club Treasurer, as her caddie, Jane scored an impressive 40 points to take the overall title in wet and windy conditions. Jane said: “It’s the first time the club has entered this event and I only just made the final. I was so excited just to play at St Andrews so to win is unbelievable. My caddie was a vital part of the day and the club members have been incredibly supportive. WCGC is a small friendly club with a relatively new ladies section and hopefully this shows that we can produce some excellent results, so I hope this will inspire members and encourage other golfers to join us.” For more information call: 020 8946 7571 | wcgc.co.uk | Facebook@19wcgc | Twitter@wcgc19

ince 1989, owner of Raynes Park’s newest café/restaurant ‘Earth To Table’, Dino, has been making a name for himself in the UK’s food and catering industry. Originally from Istanbul, he started out washing plates in kitchens to eventually farming his own pears and plums and running a successful Italian restaurant in Turkey’s capital. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, he’s latest venture run with his extremely welcoming high-spirited wife Gunay, offers both vegetarian and even vegan options alongside the more traditional dishes of meat. Two separate kitchens ensure the two types of food are prepared in two different areas. 106 Coombe Lane SW20 0AY

To ski or not to ski?

By Kate Greenhalgh

on, but I’m sure it’s all different now. They took me to the top a ‘red’ and then everyone shot off out of sight, yelling ‘Race you to the Folie Douce, Daphne!’ From the edge of a ruddy great precipice in blinding snow, I got down 1,000 meters on my bum, sobbing with self-pity and wiping the snot from my nose with a crusty mitten.

W

hen I were a kid, skiing was for Other People. Ee by gum, tent in middle of t’moor if we were lucky. Luxury. We used to dream of a flysheet, and when our Dad had finished hammering in pegs in t’dark and t’rain, he used to kill us. Try and tell the young people today that. Going ‘off-piste’ in our family meant going to the loo in the bracken because the farmer still hadn’t got plumbing. The ‘Trois Vallées’ were Scratchy Bottom, Devil’s Dyke and Rhondda. But then things changed. I did go skiing. Just when it was too late and embarrassing to tell anybody it was for the first time. I was in a group of corporate wives, back in the days when corporate people all had ‘wives, rather than ‘husbands’, because gay marriage and women being trusted to run things hadn’t really caught 54 winter 2017/18 | darlingmagazine.co.uk

But I persisted. The trick is to hire a handsome instructor called Jean-Claude, who rakes you with an insolent gaze whilst spitting tobacco, swigging endless espressos and telling all his mates in rapid Savoyard patois what a numpty you are. Jean-Claude then has to untangle your boot from the piste netting which you haplessly skied into, and fish you out of the odd snow drift by the belt of your salopettes. The indignity is so complete, it makes you a better person. And I persisted. Soon, I was skiing with the grace and élan of a Cappagh skip lorry with brake failure. Getting on and off lifts was a doddle. You fall over, and they stop the entire lift for you, with people shouting encouragement in French or German. Skiing as Tail-End Charlie in a group? Just sneak in behind a line of snow-ploughing four-year-olds, and arrive at lunch 2 hours late. Easy. And realising I had ended up living in a suburb of London populated entirely by women who can all ski like corporate wives was a wrong turn on life’s path which I learned to accept. So I’m very excited to be going skiing again this winter. Luxury! And Jean-Claude - I don’t need you no more. shop local
