award-winning writer and actor Our editor Marja-Leena paid a visit to Elizabeth's thespian home (with only one Dalek in evidence) to find out what she’s up to now
L
ike me, you will remember Elizabeth from iconic dramas and comedies such as Jeeves and Wooster and London's Burning. She’s also won accolades and awards for her short stories, she has just acquired a two book deal with Ebury Press/Penguin, and her work has been produced by BBC, C4, and Radio 4. She lives in Twickenham with husband Peter Davison, who played Dr Who in the 80’s and vet Tristan in All Creatures Great and Small. They have two sons, Louis who recently had a great role as Geoffrey Charles in Poldark, and Joel who is still at school. This thespian family has also acquired a second Dr Who, David Tennant, who is married to Peter’s actress daughter Georgia. The couple met whilst filming Dr Who.
Writing and acting require very different talents and disciplines. What are you more passionate about?

“When I was acting I was incredibly free. I had no children, I could go anywhere at any time. I do believe that it’s a charmed life if you can make a living out of it. It’s challenging but also great fun. Looking back, I feel that those many years as an actor informed me as a writer. I have always written though, even when I was acting. When I was a child I used to send pages of jokes to comics and I still remember when I was 8 they printed one in Bunty - which was terrible by the way - but it was the most incredible feeling.

“Every person's story is unique, so why not write it down? It could be the start of something fantastic.” Acting is training for becoming a writer as you are working with words. Writing a novel is really playing the characters in your head. If you can use the same skill it gives it authenticity. My first piece of writing that received attention was a play I wrote for a competition when I was heavily pregnant with my first child. I then trained with The Royal Court Young Writers Group. I also love visiting schools and advise teachers on how to develop their pupils’ speech and creative writing. I’ve been to very different schools from Feltham, Liverpool, Birmingham, also locally here.”
You are also an ambassador of the Orange Tree Theatre - is the future looking secure for the theatre? “It’s great to be part of this independent producing powerhouse that punches above its weight! They reach an audience of 75,000 a year, and 10,000 in the community, and have won 25 major industry awards. My job as an Ambassador is to persuade as many people I can to come along and see for themselves what wonderful work this theatre is doing, right in the heart of Richmond. The arts are under such pressure with funding cuts, not only at the theatre, but also in schools which is why their school’s Shakespeare programme is so important. We will always need to raise money for the theatre to continue.”

So with my first novel coming out next year, the second to finish, Orange Tree, and the business, I am keeping myself busy.”
Which of your work are you most proud and fond of? “I’ve always written short stories but wanted to write a novel. I’m finishing my debut called A Liverpool Girl which is an uplifting saga set in the 1950s. I’m from Liverpool and as a teenager, by day I was at convent school, and by night, I played my piano accordion at pubs and working mens’ clubs. I used these push and pull experiences in the book. My father’s family was Irish Liverpool catholic, my mum was a music teacher and my grandmother a ballet dancer, so I had two very different sides in my life to draw from. I will always love my short stories and still sometimes write under a different name, it frees me to be bolder and to write about different things too.”

What’s next for you? “I have a small business with Martine La Roche - Roche-Heery Creatives. We combine Martine’s photos with my writing, into bespoke books about the River Thames. Orleans Gallery were the first to stock it, which gave us the confidence to take it to Petersham Nurseries. After their feedback we produced a second version which they sold. Now it’s at many local outlets, and in central London and Bermondsey. We also produce cards and

e have seen a big increase in the number of women setting up their own businesses, 45 per cent up between 20132016, compared to a 27 per cent rise for men. This is great news as we need to utilise the talents, skills and expertise of all for our economy to stay competitive. The Women in Business Council was set up by Teresa May in 2012 in order to advise Government on how women’s contribution to the economy can be optimised. They see an urgent need to broaden girls’ career choices and aspirations by bringing together schools, businesses, career development professionals and parents. To empower future generations of young women to consider entrepreneurship as a viable career option requires us to embed this female entrepreneurism in the education system. Working for yourself doesn't have to be lonely as there are many support networks around. Women only networking groups are mushrooming everywhere. The members of these groups, myself included, find them warm, supportive, fun and less superficial. And it gets you real results too in terms of quality referrals and sales.

My ICELAND CHALLENGE

y adventure in Iceland started as a marriage of two elements. Firstly, my good friend Julia Jones of Iceland Traveller was introducing the Iceland Charity Challenge hike; secondly, Richmond Talking Newspaper desperately needed cash for new recording equipment. Our group of eleven were to walk for four days within the Golden Circle, covering 50 kilometres in total. We’d spend one night camping under the stars, and another in a scout bunkhouse. We knew that the weather could be extremely fickle and were prepared to be very wet and cold. We were led by professional guides who took us completely off the beaten track, so as far as we were concerned Iceland was completely empty. DAY ONE – walked all day on American tectonic plate. Underfoot mixture of volcanic shale and deep moss, quite hard going. Perhaps word ‘hike’ didn’t quite fit. Think all out of comfort zone but laughing. No rain though. Campsite nestled at bottom of secluded valley in middle of thermal field. Geothermal dinner, delicious lamb cooked to perfection in hot mud. Spent two hours lounging around in hot river. DAY TWO – left campsite to walk most of day on

lumpy lava – again heavy going but spirits high. Could see for miles over magnificent scenery. Someone suggested mixture of wild Wales and Mars. Walked back to hotel Hveragerdi. DAY THREE – more magnificent scenery but where I faced my own personal challenge. Climbed up ‘hill’ called Ravenscliff – 700 metres up steep slope; wonderful views from top but very hairy descent for someone with acrophobia. Luckily still no rain, but skies dark, mean and moody. Spent night in scout bunkhouse beside lake – all very pretty, tiniest Northern Lights. DAY FOUR – walked along European tectonic plate with more magnificent views, mainly looking at Ravenscliff, thinking of easier ways to raise money! Iceland has the most extraordinary landscape and skyscapes. Great humour in group. Long day finally walking to Hveragerdi... and finally Northern Lights show! At the end of the challenge, packed up and returned to the airport, all with a little piece of something Iceland under our skins. It’s a magnificent and magical country. We walked hard, but raised £4,500 for RTN – I’d say, job done!

The Gate
brings a new social dining concept to Richmond Hill
Our editor paid a visit to check out the ambience and sample their fayre
T
he Gate is part of the newly refurbished Richmond Gate Hotel with its own entrance in Queen’s Road. The space has undergone an incredible transformation from its past to a stylish restaurant and an impressive bar blending together in a light and sumptuously fitted glasshouse which opens up to a gorgeous garden offering al fresco dining and drinking in the warmer months. I invited a friend to join me for a Friday evening drinks and dinner, just few days after they had opened. The bar area and tables by the open kitchen were busy with a warm atmosphere and even with a resident DJ playing cool tunes. If you are after a more quiet corner or have a bigger group to host, then the area by the entrance is perfect. The bar staff take great pride in creating fabulous cocktails and my Negroni Bianca was mixed to
perfection. For starters we had seared scollops with pea puree and bacon; great flavours and the scollops were soft and fresh. The house cured salmon with kelp gribiche and pickles was an equally tasty combination. For a main course, I was tempted by their plant based and grains menu and ordered a baked cauliflower served with buckwheat, almond, sour cream and pickled Romanesco and topped with pomegranate. This turned out to be an amazing choice, by far the most imaginative way to serve cauliflower cheese. My friend wanted his Friday fish & chips which were light and crispy, and very tasty. After all that delicious food there really wasn’t room for
pudding but we couldn’t resist the ‘shared blueberry and apple pie’; a lovely concept of serving individual portions from an enormous pie brought to your table. You can order the whole pie too if you have a big party or a hungry family to feed. Absolutely delicious with vanilla ice-cream or custard. The Gate is a great space to work and play, for breakfast, lunch and dinner, serving coffees and cocktails all day and as day turns to night it transforms into a vibrant bar, with live music and DJ’s and special events planned too.

s we head into December, the countdown to Christmas gifting, holidays, and parties really ramps up. Reminders have been thrust upon us for last minute Christmas Day outfits, stocking-fillers, and party shoes, and a mild panic starts to set in.
“Buy less, choose well is my mantra as we approach Christmas.” Over the last few years, in the lead up to the festive season, I’ve certainly considered “who” made my clothes and the gifts I’ve bought for friends and family. Yet now there seems a new urgency for that ‘conscious Christmas’ - In the UK many more of us have David Attenborough’s Blue Planet II and BBC’s Stacey Dooley and Fashion’s Guilty Secrets to thank for opening our eyes to the impact that plastics, and fast fashion is having on our planet as well as the people who make it. Navigating the holiday season can be tricky when you are trying to stay true to your ethics, newfound or otherwise. SO - to keep it brief, and to the point, let’s start with two basic fashion principals to consider: • Sustainability - What is it made from? • Fairness for garment workers - who made it? And - it’s not JUST cheaper high street ‘fast fashion’ we should be contemplating; Even if we are going ‘high-end’ and luxury, let’s shop ‘ethical’ instead. Sustainable Fashion Stacey Dooley says in her BBC documentary FASHION’S DIRTY SECRETS: “I’ve never associated clothes’ production with pollution before.” Cotton has been called the world’s dirtiest crop, owing to its heavy use of insecticides and water, high greenhouse gas emissions and land use. Did you know, it can take over 15,000 litres of water to grow the cotton to make a pair of jeans.

Alternatively, organic cotton or linen require less water and fare better in terms of environmental impact and toxicity. Party shoes, and Boxing Day boots On the hunt for that perfect leather clutch bag and shiny party shoes? The fashion documentary on Netflix, “The True Cost Movie” shows leather tanneries responsible for chronic pollution with a toxic waste of chemicals such as arsenic and chromium flowing into India’s revered Ganges river, and the systematic poisoning of tens of thousands of people. Opt for vegetable tanned European chrome-free leather which will have been produced to higher welfare and environmental standards. There are plenty of sustainable vegan footwear options available too: Shoe brands such as Po-Zu.com use materials like cork, linen, eco microfibre, organic cotton, Fairtrade rubber, and innovative vegan materials like Pinatex, a plant-based leather which is made from pineapple leaf fibres.

How RICHMOND shaped
Virginia Woolf
W
e wrote in our summer issue about a campaign for a statue of Virginia Woolf which is to be erected on the terrace by the river in Richmond. Planning permission has now been granted and the Local Arts and Media Charity and publisher, Aurora Metro, who are behind the campaign, have raised a part of the £50,000 needed. A book Virginia Woolf in Richmond has also been published recently to coincide with the campaign. The author behind the book, Peter Fullagar, examines how living in Hogarth House on Paradise Road, Richmond was a turning point in Woolf’s career. Virginia and her husband Leonard first moved to 17 The Green, Richmond in 1914 before moving
to Hogarth House in 1915, where they stayed until 1924. The new book demonstrates that the parks and riverside walks of the town were frequented by Virginia, where she enjoyed observing the local people and attractions, often noting them down in her diary or in numerous letters to friends and family. In 1917, Virginia and Leonard founded the Hogarth Press in their house to allow Virginia the freedom and control of her own work. Their first publication was Two Stories and this led to the couple publishing works by notable writers such as Katherine Mansfield, T.S. Eliot, Sigmund Freud and E.M. Forster, as well as further work by Virginia herself. However, the turning point was the publication of Kew Gardens in 1919, a short story by Virginia which was reviewed favourably in the Times Literary Supplement. This resulted in the couple being overwhelmed with orders for the publication and this gave Virginia much more confidence in her own writing. Although the couple left Richmond in 1924, Virginia records in her diary that

“I ought to be grateful to Richmond and Hogarth, and indeed, whether it’s my invincible optimism or not, I am grateful.” Cheryl Robson, director of Aurora Metro, believes that Richmond deserves to be recognised as important in the life and work of Woolf and will help celebrate the literary history of Richmond.

What happens if you don't have a
Power of Attorney in place?

ontrary to popular belief, nobody has an automatic right to manage someone else’s finances, even if they are related, married or in a civil partnership with them. So what happens should you no longer be able to manage your financial affairs, perhaps due to ill health or an accident, and you don’t

have a Power of Attorney in place which covers property and finance? This article covers the issues that arise when a Power of Attorney is not in place and someone else needs to manage your financial affairs, including anything from paying household bills to managing your pension or savings.

What needs to happen when you don’t have a Power of Attorney in place? Firstly, you’ll need to apply to the Court of Protection for a ‘property and financial affairs deputy order’. This asks the Court to appoint a deputy, or preferably deputies, to deal with your finances.

It is advisable to have more than one deputy; that way, should one deputy not be able to carry out their duties, then another can act on your behalf. Your deputies should also be able to act ‘jointly and severally’, meaning any one deputy can act independently at any time. The Court of Protection likes family and friends to be appointed as deputies. However, where there are family disagreements or if your assets are complex, it can be best to appoint a solicitor. A Court of Protection order requires information on your assets, income and liabilities, a medical certificate and a declaration by each proposed deputy to confirm their suitability and that they will undertake their duties properly. The process of completing the forms can take around a month, and support from a solicitor may be required. Be aware that many NHS doctors won’t complete the medical certificate, and those who do may charge up to £300. The application fee is £385 and payable to the Court, and it takes about a month for the Court to issue the application. After this, your proposed deputies need to notify various
family members, including yourself – all of whom have the right to object to the appointment of a deputy. Assuming no objections are received, the Court requires an annual insurance bond which pays out should any deputy illegally take your money. For £300,000 cover, the premium is about £225. With the bond in place, the Court issues the order along with guidance for the deputies. A separate bank account needs setting up to manage your financial affairs. And your deputies will send the order to all the companies that you have dealings with. The Office of the Public Guardian (OPG) supervises deputies and receives further fees, such as the annual supervision fee of £320 per year for assets of over £21,000 and £35 if less. A further assessment fee is due to the OPG of £100, required for new deputies. All fees are payable out of your money. This whole process takes about six months.
The much better option is to make a Lasting Power of Attorney.

A Lasting Power of Attorney gives you control to ensure that your property and financial affairs are dealt with in your best interests should you no longer be able to make important decisions yourself. This is a legally binding document that your solicitor can draft on your behalf. You appoint the people that you want to act as your attorneys, taking into account any wishes and feelings that you have made known, but always in your best interests. Once these documents are written, there are no additional legal costs. In addition to covering your finances, you also have the option to have a Lasting Power of Attorney to cover your health and welfare. Both these documents can give you the peace of mind that your affairs will be managed whatever the future may hold. Oyez, oyez, oyez! Kingston has a town crier again
A
fter an eight year silence, the call of Kingston’s town crier can be heard once more, ringing out across the borough to command our attention and spread important news. The honour of this ceremonial role has been bestowed upon Mike Seigel after he expressed a keen interest in the vacant position which is now combined with that of Tipstaff. The appointment was made by the Mayor, Deputy Lieutenant and High Steward, who were looking for candidates who lived within the borough, were of notable standing, and had strong links with the community. Mike has lived in the borough for 33 years, is currently Chair of the Kingston Tour Guides and was the first Chair of the Canbury Area Residents Association (CARA) established in 1990. Besides proclaiming the news, it was commonplace for a town crier to carry out other duties such as patrolling the streets after dark, acting as peacekeepers and escorting people to the stocks, and making sure fires were damped down for the night after the curfew bell. Kingston did away with its Town Crier on the outbreak
of war in 1914, but re-established it in 1984 combining it with the position of Tipstaff. The office of the Tipstaff is thought to have been created in the 14th century. The name originates from the early law enforcement officers who would apprehend a person intended for arrest by enforcing their duty, if necessary, with a tipped staff. More recently the Tipstaff has been a uniformed official of the Council who leads the civic processions. Today, Mike’s duties are focused on supporting civic events and making the connection with Kingston’s historic past. He has already been very involved in various activities in the Royal Borough: as Tipstaff at the Mayor Making Service in June, the Crown Court Service in September, the Borough Sports Awards in October and the Remembrance Service in November, while as Town Crier at many events including the hugely successful Kingston Carnival,
the opening of a playground in Chessington, the Heritage Weekends, the Surbiton Festival and the switching on of the Christmas lights.

A very special Christmas Day Dinner with a warm, fuzzy feeling guaranteed

or the second year, our growing team of Richmond and Kingston-based volunteers are hosting a Christmas Dinner, actually on the 25th, for 50 local young people, aged 18-25, who have recently left the care system. Our goal is to create a safe and welcoming day, complete with traditional lunch, lovely gifts and festive fun. The idea to hold a Christmas Day Dinner in Richmond came from a local resident, inspired by the 2012 Olympic poet, Lemn Sissay. Lemn’s first Dinner took place in 2013 in Manchester; this year there will be 14 nationwide. The need for the Dinner is beautifully expressed by Lemn, who grew up in foster care and in children’s homes, and had no family to fall back on when he became a care leaver. “It feels an incredibly risky time,” he says. “I used to fold myself into myself. All the memories were of Christmases that hadn’t been good.”

Last year’s dinner was held at the Cricket Club in Bushy Park and the feedback was fantastic. One personal advisor from the Leaving Care Team said: “The messages I have received from my
young people that attended Christmas Day are amazing – it’s a day they will always remember. They told me they made friends, swapped numbers and felt really special.” For many young care leavers, loneliness and isolation is magnified on Christmas Day; it can be a day to dread and then forget. We’re inviting the local community to join us to help make this day special for these young people.

The
Prodigal Daughter

ow. It seemed like only three months ago I took my nervous kid up to Durham University with her posters, black Goth gear and beanie-baby rabbit. I wept all the way home. Yet here I was, suddenly welcoming her back for good (well, the foreseeable future as our Brexit world crumbles). Over her three years away, things had dramatically changed. I’d just swapped our four bed comfy villa for a two cabin houseboat near Kingston Bridge and a wide-beam narrowboat in Chertsey. Whilst she, I soon discovered, had swapped her teenagehood for a First in Psychology, a case-load of rotting clothes from damp student accommodation, and a plethora of Uni mates who call me ‘Mama Hanson’ and crash over with unexpected regularity. So there we were, suddenly living together again, struggling with hatches, engines, ropes, and leaks and an outdoors-loving cat going demented with the temporary confinement on board. A transition took place as we uncomfortably shifted from Mother/Daughter to Flatmates. E.g. my horror at discovering she smoked, ended with my bumming a fag off her after one of the inevitable

“Is the boat sinking?!” moments. Yes, it was impossible to lecture her whilst clutching for the (moral) high ground, so after a few nights sharing ciggies on deck at midnight - oohing over the view of the river I stopped. Then there’s the fact she’s 21 and earning. Currently she’s saving up with a fun job at a kids farm called Piglets… but guess who brings home all the bacon? I don’t ask for rent, and I buy all the food and household goods. In return I’m more vocal about her helping me. Rows ensue. She sees me as telling her what to do/controlling her life. Whereas I feel she should be more aware of chores and just do them without asking. Tones of voice are misread. Meanwhile dating is a whole other issue. But the fact is, having her home again is utterly fantastic. We often batten down the hatches, light the wood burner, and curl up for a Netflix binge/ book/podcast, bored cat stretched out equally between us. So don’t cry when they go because, like Arnie’s famous words, many now join in with ‘I’ll be back” (and with a bit of luck, not terminating your patience. freedom, or bank balance).
