If the Chinese are right, it’s going to be a lively year. Yes, as the Year of the Snake slithers into history, the Year of the Horse turns the slow trot of life into a speedy gallop or, perhaps, in the case of The Village, just a dignified canter. The bustling signs are everywhere, from the stunning new Matches store on the High Street, making way (the whisper is) for four or five exciting new independent businesses to the continued Chelseafication of Raynes Park, fast becoming known as The Other Village – notably, Absolute Abode’s much anticipated opening and a hotel above the Co-Op (who would have thought!). And over on Arthur Road businesses are riding high, encouraged by the bounding economy and the opening of the Wimbledon Park Hall. There’s a summer buzz on the Piazza, the Fair’s on its way, and those tennis thoroughbreds will bring in the usual crowds of punters from all over the world. So saddle up for our bumper Summer issue and don’t forget to enter the prestigious Merton Best Business Awards. Entries close 27th June. mertonbestbusiness.co.uk. Tally Ho!

Jeweller to the Stars Daou jewellery is designed and re-launched by Dalia Daou of Wimbledon, after an interrupted but glorious history as fine jeweller to stars, sovereigns and society since 1930

alia chats to Darling: As the third generation to create Daou jewellery I inherited my design sensibility and love of art and nature from my father and grandfather, whose designs were sought after for their beauty, colour, life and innovation. My father’s original fine jewellery pieces were especially admired and desired in Beirut during its golden age in the 60s and 70s when his clients included the gorgeous Brigitte Bardot, Candice Bergen, David Niven and their contemporaries. He was awarded the royal warrant from King Hussein of Jordan, who commissioned gifts for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Pope Paul VI, Prince Rainier of Monaco and

other heads of state as well as for his Queen and family. Unfortunately the business, like all of Beirut, suffered with the war, my father had to close and left to become creative director of Chaumet on Bond Street. Like many new parents, mine chose to come to Wimbledon to bring up our family. My two brothers and I, with the addition of a golden retriever, had the pleasure of lovely Wimbledon Village life and many happy hours spent on the Common. I attended Wimbledon High School GDST where I explored a wide variety of interests. My artistic skills grew being surrounded by beautiful jewellery, sculptures and paintings and through a pre-foundation course at Wimbledon Art College and visits to Fielders. All of us ‘ladies’, as we were called, would agree that WHS instilled ambition, an appetite for adventure, and the confidence that we could achieve in whichever field we chose, which is becoming evident in the varied, fascinating careers of my class-mates. I went on to graduate in Physics from the University of Bristol; spent a summer at the École des BeauxArts in Paris learning sculpture, and earned a Masters in History of Science, Medicine and Technology from Imperial College. After five years working in finance in the City I became frustrated with the lack of variety and autonomy, and realised I wanted to build a business for myself and my future, and more simply – I missed beauty. I travelled widely in Europe, South America and Asia for a year to reorientate myself and find inspiration and the self-motivation to return to Wimbledon and to pursue my true passion for design. To ‘follow in my father’s footsteps’, I studied jewellery at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design; the Gemological Institute of America; and Hatton

Garden. Combining these and my familiarity with fine jewellery, and applying my previous experience in a new way, has led to a multifaceted understanding of the art and science of designing precious jewellery; the sculptural threedimensionality and important considerations of how pieces are worn, the crystal structures of gemstones and the properties of

light, all contribute to my designs. These influences can be seen in my debut Star design collection, inspired by the Art Deco 1930 origins of Daou jewellery, and the meaning of ‘Daou’ as ‘light’ in Lebanese. It was an honour that my Star design was chosen for presentation at the prestigious Goldsmith Craft & Design Awards Exhibition and this encouraged me to begin to revive Daou as a contemporary luxury name with the collection, made in London by quality master craftsmen in 18 karat white and yellow gold, diamonds and coloured gemstones. I aim to create jewellery with elegance and originality, thoughtful gifts for occasions like upcoming graduations, with some exciting new colourful designs coming soon! daoujewellery.com

The Love Game By Richard Jones of The Tennis Gallery

Never mention LOVE to a tennis player, it means NOTHING to them.

I

n the 21st century, big-money tennis has spawned a generation of wealthy superstars, but the dedication required to reach the top allows little time for a social life. Stability is key: Roger Federer met his wife Mirka at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, and the couple recently greeted their second set of twins. Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic are all in long-term relationships, which is just as well as their existence centres on training, practice and matches. However, things were not always like this. No-one knows for certain how the word “love” came to represent a score of nil or zero in tennis, but it is easy to see how the world’s premier racket sport has from its earliest days been associated with glamour, passion and romance. Originally invented in late nineteenth century Britain as an upper-class garden party game with the express purpose of providing an enjoyable and active pastime which “eligible” young ladies and “suitable” gentlemen could play together, lawn tennis – as it was then called – quickly developed into an international sport that has captivated the public with its larger than life personalities and tales of romantic intrigue. In Victorian times the social lives of young single people were bound by a strict code of etiquette. Young ladies were rarely seen in the company of young men, and even then they were chaperoned. But tennis allowed boys and girls to team up on court, and many a romance was sparked by a Sunday afternoon mixed doubles game. The garden party era ran from the 1870s through to the start of the First World War in 1914 and, during

8

this time, tennis was epitomised by greeting card images of romantic mixed doubles scenes. In the 1920s the Jazz Age arrived and suddenly the focus was on the global stars of the game, American “Big”

Bill Tilden and Frenchwoman Suzanne Lenglen, nicknamed “La Diva” by the press. Tilden was a confirmed bachelor who lived for tennis, whilst Lenglen’s athleticism and daring knee-length outfits made her the sex-symbol of the day. Men flocked to the All England Club’s Worple Road grounds to catch a glimpse of Suzanne, but in a career strongly guided by her father, her private life remained a mystery. Britain’s triple Wimbledon champion Fred Perry was the epitome of the 1930s sporting hero. According to his biographer Perry, a dashing athlete in elegant white flannel trousers and with slick black Brylcreamed hair, enjoyed a “vigorous private life,” dating a series of Hollywood stars and marrying four times.

There are strong historic – and romantic – links between tennis and show business. 1931 Wimbledon champion Sidney Wood travelled over to England The Tennis Gallery for the tournament aboard the Road RMS Mauretania, and 112 Arthur during the voyage heWimbledon met actress Gertrude Lawrence, Park 8AA They who was more than London, ten yearsSW19 his senior. The late twentieth century saw a worldwide tennis boom, and some of the top players became global sex symbols. Rumania’s combustible Ilie Nastase – twice a Wimbledon finalist – was reputed to have slept with two thousand women during his career. Likewise in the 1970s, long-haired Swede Bjorn Borg was besieged by amorous women wherever he went. Heather Watson Nastase, though, Borg did Unlike his contemporary not let it distract him, winning five Wimbledon titles from 1976 to 1980.

avid and Victoria would like to offer a big THANK YOU to Wimbledon Park for welcoming us to the neighbourhood. The salon, which opened its doors on May 6th, has been overwhelmed by the support of its established clientele and the new guests who are visiting for the first time. The feedback has been enthusiastically positive and this has reinforced their commitment to deliver and develop their range of services on offer.

Bringing a salon together for the first time relies heavily on the desires of the clients who express their needs, which may change depending on the seasons. With that in mind, and summer fast approaching, David and Victoria are thrilled to be introducing the KeraStraight range to the salon offering frizz free, low maintenance holiday hair, allowing for more time to be spent enjoying yourself without the constant worry of ‘wild hair’. OK, I hear you say, that takes care of the texture but what about that other problem brought on by those glorious hazy summer days, the colour!! Victoria suggests that whether you are enjoying a Pimms on the terraces of Wimbledon or relaxing on a tropical island paradise, keep it covered to protect those luscious, warm, brunette tones or your delicate, blonde, creamy hues so lovingly created over the long winter months. However, all is not lost if you can’t resist the temptation, colour refreshers/enhancers to restore your former radiance can be discussed upon your return. 2014 is proving to be a very exciting time at Thom Kirby. Coupled with opening the salon we are expanding our team and looking forward to producing our first photo collection which we hope will reinforce and display our commitment to our craft and clients. Once again, a BIG thank you to all our clients, we couldn’t do it without you. Thom Kirby Hair 020 8947 5222 155 Arthur Road, SW19 8AD thomkirbyhair@gmail.com WELLA stockists

Could Your Life Run More Smoothly? Wimbledon PA & Concierge Service – around the clock flexible service to support Wimbledon’s busy home and business owners and visitors

J

o Hall: “I moved to Wimbledon 3 years ago and fell in love with the Village and its community. Being a farmer’s daughter and educated at the Royal Agricultural College probably makes Wimbledon the only part of London that could make me feel so at home. A lover of coffee shop culture, I found that there was nothing more enjoyable than sitting with a good brew watching horses go by. It was sitting in one such establishment last year with one of Wimbledon’s greatest characters, who sadly passed away last September, that the idea of using my business and lifestyle management skills to help the Villagers’ lives run more smoothly and efficiently was born. Being a PA was never a 9 – 5 job for me. I’ve always supported incredibly busy individuals who have spent most of their time travelling, so there has always been a need for last minute chauffeurs, hotel and restaurant bookings as well as assisting in their home lives by booking babysitters, theatre tickets or even just picking up a gift or dry cleaning. We are also fortunate that Wimbledon-based suppliers are of such a high standard, so WPA will, where possible, promote these establishments to support its Members requirements”.

After 25 years of working as a Business and Private Assistant to Executives in companies such as IMG Media as well as for busy private individuals, Jo Hall has recently launched Wimbledon PA & Concierge Service (WPA).

‘Concierge Membership Service will offer 24/7/365 support’ WPA offers a flexible round-the-clock PA service typically to assist those with a one-off project or a business or individual not requiring a full-time assistant, but needing some secretarial, diary management, overseas travel bookings or itinerary planning support on a regular basis. To ensure that assistance can be offered out of hours, when clients are travelling, and for visitors to Wimbledon, WPA includes a Concierge Membership Service that offers 24/7/365 support. glass of prosecco in a leafy garden? An oriental salad and slice of homemade orange and rosemary cake? No, it isn’t Tuscany. Because now that Spoons Tearoom has a license to serve your favourite tipple, from a chilled Chablis Premier Cru to an ice cold beer, you don’t have to venture much further than the bottom of Copse Hill for a slap-up breakfast, a lazy lunch or a long afternoon with friends in the summer sunshine. All cakes are made on the premises, just opposite the

famous Tony’s – everything from a Victoria Sponge to a Gateau Mille Feuille. Already famous for their quiches and salads, the Spoons menu now includes a selection of dishes such as homemade chicken, bean sprout and ginger spring rolls, scotch eggs, Asian coleslaw, aubergine parmigiana and sticky chicken wrap. Law of Attraction Why we need the earth’s magnetic energy field to survive and thrive

The earth is a big magnet and all living species living on it thrive and are nourished by being connected to its magnetic field. •

As the North South polarities shift and flip every few thousand years the earth’s magnetic field has now decreased by 50%. Over 80% of our time is spent indoors these days. Furthermore, concrete and steel absorbs 50% of the earth’s magnetic field before it reaches us. Electromagnetic fields are the newest experiment on humanity and surround us everywhere with Wi-Fi, mobile phones, mobile masts, etc. They interfere with our body’s energy system and our health suffers as a result.

It is not surprising that they have recently banned Wi-Fi in French primary schools until it is proven to be safe. Nikken have created a Sleepsystem which cocoons us in both the earth’s natural magnetic field and the sun’s far infrared energy. This gives the body a chance to repair and rejuvenate while you sleep. BENDING OVER BACKWARDS Flexible working is changing shape

F

rom 30 June 2014 the law will change to allow all employees the right to make flexible working requests. Flexible working may involve changing the number of hours worked, changing the start and end time of work, or allowing some work to be carried out at home. Previously, it was required that the employee must have caring responsibilities to be allowed to make a flexible working request. The Children and Families Act 2014 will extend the right to request flexible working to employees who do not have primary caring responsibility. With the end of the requirement for a flexible working request to be expressly linked to caring responsibilities, childless couples or unattached individuals could seek a more relaxed lifestyle. Many employees of both sexes may find the opportunity to vary their working hours very attractive, providing this does not damage their career prospects, or otherwise impact negatively on their employer’s business. Alternatively, if there has been a reduction in work then some employers may positively embrace reduced hours, which could accompany a flexible working request.

Authorised and regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (50788) Authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority

Liz Whitehead

The main reason behind the legislation is to give greater equality to men and women’s working arrangements. It gives the opportunity to apply for flexible working to men, in the same way that mothers returning to work following maternity leave have been doing for years. Some men may choose not to take advantage of that opportunity, especially if they are concerned that this could have a negative impact on their long term career prospects. Partners currently have the right to take advantage of sharing their wives’ maternity leave, but this opportunity does not yet seem to have proven popular. It is very uncertain whether changing legislation will impact significantly on social norms, at least in the short term. Men and women at different stages of their careers may view this opportunity differently. It may be quite attractive to have the option to choose to share childcare responsibilities, or simply to spend more time working from home. It could be an ideal arrangement for many employees to work outside of “normal working hours”, so fitting work around their leisure activities. But there are no guarantees that a flexible working request will be granted. With this change in law, employers have an obligation to deal with a flexible working request in a “reasonable” manner and the employee must receive a decision within 3 months. There will be no automatic right to an appeal, however the employer can allow an appeal if they choose to do so.

The employer may refuse to grant a flexible working request if it would have a negative impact on the business, including incurring additional costs, reducing the quality of service or performance, resulting in an inability to meet customer demands, or resulting in insufficient work for the new hours the employee wants to work. In making an application for flexible working, it would be advisable for employees to be prepared to explain how any potentially negative effects on the business could be resolved, and how increased flexibility would be beneficial to the company and its customers. If an employee feels that the response to their flexible working request is unreasonable or they do not receive a response within the 3 month decision period, they can make an application to the Employment Tribunal. Some employees may feel that they have been discriminated against if their flexible working request has been denied. Men and women should be treated equally when flexible working decisions are made. If you feel that you have been discriminated against, contact us to discuss your options. Before making a flexible working request, check whether your employer has a flexible working policy and what their procedure is. Home From Home Just in time for the opening of her new concept store in Raynes Park, we enjoyed a coffee and a chat with local entrepreneur and curator Kirsty McMorron. You’ve already got a successful architectural interior design firm, so why have you decided to open a retail and café space? I’ve always had a real passion for design and, having shared heritage from Australia and New Zealand, where we have a really amazing coffee culture, it’s always been something that I’ve wanted to do. Combined design retail and café spaces are a growing trend, so what will set yours apart? I think it’s the way that we curate our product offering. We’ve got beautiful coffee that’s locally roasted in Wimbledon, by Alchemy. Then there’s our range of furniture, lighting and homeware products, curated from all over the world. We’re

going to all the different international design shows and putting together a unique range of products, some of which are exclusive to us. There’s nothing mass made, even though we have a range of price points and a lot of our offering is really affordable. So are you happy for people to just come and relax in your new space? Yes, definitely. We want to make it a focal point for South West London and our idea is to offer the pleasures of coffee, meeting friends and browsing beautiful products all in one place. We’ll also invite some of our artists and designers to give talks and seminars. We want to create a destination where people can feel at home. Besides having a flair for it, what made you decide to become an architectural interior designer? Home is always really important to me. Hospitality is really important. I love having people around. I love making a beautiful space. And I wanted to make a difference in someone’s life, to change where they work or their home, and make it somewhere where they love being. Thank you Kirsty. A Bomb in the Basement Radical renovations by Paul Bryan

B

uilder Paul Bryan: After having completed a large double extension and full house renovation in Burghley Road, Wimbledon Village, Haven Construction were asked to tender for the work across the road. We were awarded the contract and started work on this lovely home in September 2011. Initially we were building a new loft conversion, removing the existing staircase and creating a new centre orientated circular staircase, creating a new extension to the ground floor, remodeling and renovating all of the rooms within the house, creating a rear terrace, redoing the front of the house entrance and front driveway and decorating throughout. We had a proposed work time of 24 weeks. We started with the loft conversion, and 1st floor works after stripping out the entire house. We were two months into the project and it was decided that it would be good to have a basement as well. After receiving the structural calculations and piling details and, in turn, pricing the job, the basement contract was added onto the scope of works. We started the ‘great dig’ at the beginning of January and soon became aware that there was an enormous amount of rubble at the rear of

the house on the slopes of the hill going down towards the tennis courts. What had happened was that the rear wall of the house had been bombed in the second world war and the rubble had been covered up over time. The rear wall was re-built, but we had the task of clearing the rubble. After hiring mining rock splitters, numerous sizes of breaker and many man hours, we were able to clear the rubble and build the basement. The result now is a magnificent basement on the slopes of Wimbledon Hill, looking onto an exquisite garden and lower terrace, accessible by spiral staircase internally and from the rear terrace steps externally. A satisfied customer and a proud builder is always a successful outcome. Haven Construction and Building Services Ltd: havenconstruction.net havenconstruction.sw@gmail.com 177-187 Arthur Road, Wimbledon, SW10 8AE T: 78805 460639 “Paul Bryan and the Haven team carried out what was a big project with a number of unexpected complications to a high standard. We are very pleased with the outcome and for the professional way everything was dealt with.” The Happy Client

Self Esteem – We all need it Local psychotherapist Pam Custers explains why

F

rom the moment our children take their first breath our aim is to help them grow through childhood, into their teens and on to becoming emotionally successful adults. The importance of developing our children’s self esteem can feel overwhelming to parents. Martin Seligman’s definition of self esteem is “accepting yourself with an accurate appreciation of your strengths and worth and feelings that you are able to cope with life challenges”. In the 1970’s self esteem became central to children’s welfare. Low self esteem was blamed for a range of society’s problems. Parenting and education promoted building self esteem through a failure-free learning environment. This was to help children gain a sense of achievement. The results were surprising. Whilst the focus was to feel good about oneself, it came at the expense of doing well, boredom, overcoming frustration or being able to meet a challenge. Astoundingly, despite the intention being to increase self esteem precisely the opposite happened. There was an increase in anxiety and children who had an artificially boosted self esteem were found to be very sensitive to any feedback and found challenge hard. So what can we learn from all this research and how do we give children “authentic self esteem” that will see them through their lives and make them happy? Children need to learn about frustration, tolerance and persistence as this provides them with tools to cope with setbacks and disappointments (which are normal parts of existence), and to develop competence.

Our focus in developing authentic self esteem is twofold: • increasing our children’s competence by supporting them in learning new skills, developing an interest, handling a challenge and learning application and perseverance, • and most importantly by acknowledging their worth as human beings by loving them! If we can do this, we give them the best chance of having a healthy self esteem. Pam Custers is a Relationship Therapist and has considerable experience working with a range of family challenges. ♣ Love All

N E S W - NB 1NT NB 3NT The purpose of the hold-up play is to try to sever communications between your opponents’ hands in their most threatening suit. In today’s hand, South plays in 3NT and West leads 5♥. East contributes Q♥. Should South win with K♥? To answer this question, South should assume that the leader has a 5-card heart suit. This assumption will cover you for almost all combinations. If West has five hearts headed by ♥A10, then East started with two hearts. If South wins the first trick with K♥ and then takes the diamond finesse – the correct play – if this loses, East will still have a heart left to lead back through South’s ♥J6, and the contract will be defeated. To prevent this, South should play low at trick one, allowing East’s Q♥ to win. East returns a heart and, now, whether or not West wins this next trick, South still has a heart stopper, and East has run out of hearts. When East wins K♦, he has nothing dangerous to return and the contract is secure. aceoftrumps.com 42 june–aug 2014 | darlingmagazine.co.uk

Cometh the Hour… By Kate Greenhalgh

T

he other night, at the unguarded stage of a dinner-party, my friend Delia unexpectedly skewered me with a beady look and said, “Kate, it’s time you and Tim did a Challenge”. Delia is a woman who recently cycled from Land’s End to John O’Groats with not a hair out of place, hardly bothering to change gears. A kind of Elle Macpherson meets Victoria Pendleton. A ‘Challenge’ for Delia involves unimaginable physical discomfort over a long period of time, dicing nonchalantly with death by juggernauts, heart-attacks, dehydration, Scottish Nationalists and saddle sores. I fixed her gaze with my non-swivelling eyeball and retorted, “Oh, yeah, sure, um, yeah. What about a sponsored pub-crawl?”

She laughed pityingly. The next day I turned to Tim. “A Challenge! Who does Challenges?” “Well, like, all your friends. Helen ran the Marathon, Clare has raised thousands for charity making her marmalade, Colette organises massive fundraisers, Nicky devotes herself to nursing, Carolyn volunteered for the Olympics; they’re all amazing really, and...” “Et tu, Brute?” I said and threw my copy of Grazia at him. “I do Challenges! I get the kids to school on time, I clean out the chinchillas, I, I, I....” I’d run out by then. “Who does Challenges?” I asked the kids, but they were too busy packing for Duke of Edinburgh Gold and training for a half-marathon to bother to answer. The truth sank in. I alone of my entire cohort am a lazy coward, a make-weight, a drone. I don’t do Challenges. I get a stitch. The structural trajectory of this column begs a snivelling self-vindication at this point. So here it comes – I did my Challenge in 1994. As a student teacher, I was given a class of teenage boys to bully through a Dickens novel. It was bowel-dilating horror. Carnage. If in some smothering dreams, you too could stand in front of Y10 G2B pleading for the fight to stop, the books to be fetched from the playground where they’d been hurled, and the jeering shouts to be hushed, week after week, until your teaching style at last achieved a level of sufficient nastiness that ‘Oliver Twist’ got done, my friend, you would not ask me, with such high zest, to ever do a ‘Challenge’ again. That was it. See you in The Crooked Billet!
