Wasn’t Meghan and Harry’s wedding just the perfect start to our wonderful summer Season? Richmond has its own share of colourful fetes, festivals and art events, accessible for everyone to enjoy. The Annual Art House Open Studios weekends in June have grown into a very respectable art happening that brings local artists and the public together, perfect for picking up original art at affordable prices too. Twickenham knows how to put up a party; their summer festival runs over three weeks with fairs, concerts and cruises. One of my highlights is Church Street ‘going green’ for their fair. Over in St Margarets, the wonderful Crown Road puts up an equally impressive Traders Street Party. We are delighted to have Sahar Arfeen, founder of The Posh Mum Club, as our Inspiring Woman. There is so much more to her club than the name would suggest. Most of us are part of the modern day ‘café society’ so we checked out the best places for you to note down in your black books aka smartphones. And check out our favourite eateries for the summer. Summer wouldn’t be the same without Wimbledon Tennis fortnight, world’s most watched tennis championships. Roger Jones from the Tennis Gallery Wimbledon, looks back in our exclusive story and updates us on the strawberries and cream score too. And there is much more… Wishing you a lovely summer! Until September…

DON'T JUDGE the book by its cover You don’t have to be posh to join The Posh Mum Club By Marja-Leena Toseland

I

am sitting with Sahar Arfeen on the terrace at the Petersham Hotel admiring the stunning view of River Thames and Petersham marshes below. Sahar is a very beautiful young woman behind The Posh Mum Club and I’m keen to find out what lies underneath her soft exterior. You set up The Posh Mum Club just one year ago and the club is already taking up pages in South West London women’s diaries with its fantastic monthly events. What gave you the idea to set up the club?

Sahar Arfeen, founder of The Posh Mum Club

“When my younger daughter Inaya, now three, started nursery last year and my older daughter, Aaila six, attended full time school I found myself with a little time on my hands. I was looking at different ideas for starting my own business and was planning on attending a mother’s club for networking and inspiration in central London but the logistics of looking after my girls proved too difficult so I decided to start a club near where I live instead. The Ivy Café had just opened in Richmond and it felt like the perfect venue for our first event. The lunch was a great success with Holly Tucker from Holly & Co. and co-founder of Not On The High darlingmagazine.co.uk SUMMER 2018

wanted a memorable name that would stand out and be a little bold, why not. The club is very welcoming to all mums and also to women who are not mums but are part of the support network for mums, whether they are grandmothers, aunts, friends or stepmothers. We really welcome everyone.”

“Being a mum had made me feel like I had lost my identity and I just blended in with all

the other mums. I used to work in investment banking in the City and had a professional identity before. Although I was having a really good time being at home with my children I wanted to reclaim my identity outside home again. I was thinking of calling the business the Mummy Club, Mummy Meetup or The Mum Club but I

“We organise events where women can network and bring their ideas together. Our members want to chase their dreams and push to achieve their goals, whether for their health, wellness, relationships or businesses. It can be anything. We want to encourage women to aim high. commitments and children to care for which makes many to put their own dreams and lives on the back burner. Indulging in luxury makes you feel that you can aim a little higher and you don’t have to give up on yourself. That’s why ‘posh’ as it’s aspirational. Our events feature inspirational women who run their own businesses and have done great things.

We also support women’s and mothers’ charities by donating part of our ticket sales.” Does it attract a certain type of a mum? “We appeal for the more daring women, who have been ambitions in their professional lives, liked luxury things and

law introduced me to Instagram then and that has helped enormously in establishing The Posh Mum Club.

Are your events accessible for everyone?

“We are growing outside of London too and launching in Manchester with an event at Harvey Nichols and also in Dubai this summer. We are also bringing our own products out soon, the first one will be launched in Dubai this summer with a children’s company there. It’s a travel box for children.”

“We are in the middle with our pricing and see ourselves as affordable luxury. We work with luxury brands, best venues, best catering and best products in order to attract our ladies. Our events are once a month which helps to keep it affordable. We do attract the wealthier mums but also the curious mums who are willing to invest in themselves.” Where did you grow up? “I grew up in Purley in Surrey and commuted to the City of London School for Girls in Barbican. Then went on to study Finance in Durham University which led to a career in the City where I worked for JP Morgan and UBS. I also worked at Burberry. At the same time I set up my first business designing my own lingerie collection. I left that for a while when I had my children and found it difficult to pick it up again as so much had changed with social media marketing especially. My sister in

What are your future plans?

What are you favourite local haunts? “Kew Gardens is one of our favourite places to visit with the children, also Richmond Green for family picnics and the best ice-cream from Danieli’s on Brewer’s Lane. I love the Ivy Café for a little bit of luxury. Their gorgeous interior takes me to an other place the minute I step in. I recently discovered Cara for shoes and clothes and Anthropologie always has beautiful clothes for everyday wear. darlingmagazine.co.uk SUMMER 2018

Welcome to the summer café society

Darling sent Zara Woodcock on the hunt for the best local afternoon treats. She discovered specialty coffee, amazing gelato, delicatessen, healthy lunches and special occasion afternoon tea that are definitely a must-visit this summer. Gelateria Danieli Gelateria Danieli is located down the picturesque Brewer’s Lane, surrounded by restaurants and quirky jewellery shops. Made just upstairs, their authentic Italian ice cream is fresh, healthy, and packed with flavours that makes you feel just like you’re in Sicily. If you’re confused about which of the many flavours to pick from, the pistachio and salted caramel are a local favourite with the customers. The pistachio is imported from Mt. Edna, where the owner is from, keeping the little café extremely genuine and close to home. 16 Brewers Lane, Richmond, TW9 1HH www.gelateriadanieli.com

The Retreat Kitchen A vegan’s paradise can be found in this quaint café. The Retreat Kitchen is a firm favourite with locals, offering healthy lunches and vegan delights for those with a sweet tooth. Gluten-free options are available with their chocolate lavender cupcakes, and other options that change every week. You’ll leave feeling fresher than ever after trying their summer berry smoothies and iced matcha teas! 16 Hill Rise, Richmond, TW10 6UA www.theretreatkitchen.co.uk

Aromi & Piaceri Gourmet Italians This little Italian shop will make you feel just like you are in Italy! If you’re looking for the freshest of deli meats – coppa ham or salami – and all types of cheeses, this is the place to be. They sell everything from award-winning olive oils to biscuits and chocolates to have with your espresso. Not a fan of sweets? Don’t worry because their range of Burrata, Mozzarella and hand-made pastas will have you coming back for more. 12 Hill Street, Richmond, TW9 1TN www.aromipiaceri.com

Bingham Hotel Afternoon tea at the Bingham feels like a special occasion, whenever you enjoy it. Served in the beautiful Lounge Bar overlooking the River Thames. STEPPING OUT with LUCY CHOI Darling’s Editor Marja-Leena Toseland visits the designer at her London boutique

A

As niece to celebrated shoe designer Jimmy Choo OBE and sister to Sandra Choi, Creative Director of Jimmy Choo, shoes are very much in Lucy's soul. Lucy was fortunate to grow up close to her uncle where she learned how hand-made shoes are made. But Lucy didn't go straight to the family line of business, instead she built a successful career in the corporate world first. She followed her dream in 2012 and started Lucy Choi London. D: You are clearly an incredibly talented and creative designer, what kept you away from your ‘calling’ until 2012? L: I always knew I wanted to work in the fashion world, having been around my uncle and the art of shoe making. I could have chosen an easier path but decided it was important to have an understanding of the business world under my belt first. After 10 years as MD at French Sole, I felt it was time to develop my brand. I took a big risk, using all my savings and selling my flat to launch my company. D: What sets your brand apart from the other brands on the market?

L: I really wanted to launch a shoe brand known for its affordable yet luxury designer styles without compromising on what I call the 3Cs: Comfort, Craftmanship and Character. Our theme is ‘Rock and Royal’. Think of Kate Middleton and Kate Moss. They would all find something to their liking. Our shoes have been stocked at the floors of key department stores, including Fenwick and Harvey Nichols, and online at Net-a-Porter, MatchesFashion. com and high end boutiques such as Wolf & Badger. Internationally, we are sold in the Middle East, Belgium, Hong Kong, Singapore and New York. They all cater to different customers but who have a taste for this rare mix of quality, comfort, unique design and price in common. Women who buy Prada or Manolo Blahnik also buy our shoes. Shoes that you can wear everywhere and every day.

D: Top tips for splurging and saving? L: Definitely splurge on a pair of our signature flat ankle boots, we have them in all different materials and are a must for winter. Also make sure you have a pair of signature high heels as they are timeless. Because of our weather you won’t get so much wear from open toe sandals, so I would say that is a save. lucychoilondon.com

Time to update your summer wardrobe I’ve chosen some great, on trend, designer and high street pieces for this feature. You don’t have to just stick to designer brands when updating your wardrobe. 1. When shopping, choose items which compliment your current capsule wardrobe. 2. Think about the colours which you know suit you. If you’re not sure, why not ask me, your local professional Fashion Stylist. I can teach you how to mix colours, which suit your complexion and body type. 3. Your make-up choices and hair colour is also something to think about. 4. When putting an outfit together, use the 2-3 colour rule... i.e. never wear more than 2 or 3 colours in your outfit. Otherwise you’re in danger of looking like a walking rainbow! 5. Choosing the right accessories is key to finishing off your outfit. When shopping, pick new items which can be worn with multiple outfits. If you’re not sure how to apply these tips, book an appointment with me; your free consultation will form part of your styling session. Not just a FASHION ACCESSORY SPORTS BRAS play an essential role in providing comfort and protecting health when we are exercising By Hagen Schumacher, Expert Consultant Cosmetic Surgeon, MyAesthetics

A sports bra that fits incorrectly can ruin your workout and affect your health, so here are five things you should know when buying one

1. Are you being measured and fitted correctly? Any kind of exercise, particularly high-impact fitness like HIIT or running, places tension on the supporting muscles of your breasts, so it’s important to have a professional fitting. Get measured around the smallest part of your lower bust, where the band sits and then the fullest part of your bust. Go through a letter for each inch of difference and you've found your cup size.

2. When do you have the right fit? The band of your sports bra should sit firmly around your chest at an even level. Your shoulder straps should provide support without leaving marks. You should be able to set the hooks on the loosest setting when you first begin wearing your bra, so you can tighten it as it begins to naturally lose elasticity. When it comes to augmented breasts, it’s important to invest in a supportive sports bra

rather than one with a compression fit. Compression bras may squeeze implants unnecessarily, but a supportive sports bra will take the burden off the connective tissues, keeping the breasts in position.

worn by pulling them over your head. The structure of it compresses the breasts against the body to limit movement. Encapsulation designs have individual cups surrounding each breast and provide shape.

3. Tell-tale signs your sports bra is the wrong fit

There are now sports bras offering a combination of compression and encapsulation. These encapsulate each breast individually while also compressing the breast tissues against the chest. They offer the most sturdy and complete type of support for women of any breast size.

The band rides up the back, or you're using the tightest hook, the straps dig into your skin and there is spillage when you bend over

4. Pick your bra by activity Low-support bras are best for low-impact activities like walking and yoga; mediumsupport is suitable for brisk walking and cycling; high-support is designed for sports like running and aerobics. Compression style bras do not have cups and are usually

5. When should I buy a new spots bra? Just like all bras, sports bras stretch over time and it’s recommended they’re replaced every four to six months, depending on the frequency of wear and quality of care.

may come as a surprise to some. Its volunteers allow Powerjam to keep fees relatively low and also gives free opportunities to disadvantaged musical youths. Anna explains, “I started Powerjam not only because I love music—but mainly because I know first hand that this kind of personalised support and work can change the course of a young life.” Perhaps this is the secret of Powerjam's success.

Volunteer Director, Anna Texier, originally from LA, started Powerjam as a way to keep this age group interested in their instruments by playing music that excites them. Three years later, Powerjam consists of various bands and over 20 members who rehearse weekly in the studios at Heatham House and have a “gig” every term. Anna’s professional music industry background along with her qualified staff provide the structure and training necessary to prepare the young bands for local public stages like the

notorious Eel Pie Club and St. Margaret’s Fair where the bands play popular crowd favourites from all generations and originals. Adults are often surprised at their level of play and young people are inspired to see their peers onstage, sounding like rock and pop stars. Their recent event attracted approximately 400 locals where one guest commented, “If you shut your eyes, you would think they were professional adult bands!”. Another

Are you looking for consistent HOME CARE

WHEN YOU NEED IT?

Imagine choosing your very own local care team today

H

azel, an outgoing and independent seventyone year old living in Richmond, was planning to go into hospital for a knee operation. Her daughter Theresa, who lives in California, was keen to arrange for her home care until Hazel would be back on her own feet again. Thankfully, Hazel's knee surgery went well. Theresa had arranged for transitional support at a care home to help her mother’s rehabilitation. After two weeks at the care home, Hazel had made good progress and was ready to return home, as soon as she could find consistent and reliable care. Theresa googled 'home care in Richmond' and was initially relieved when she was able to contact several care agencies by phone, even though it meant calling them during the early hours of the morning from Los Angeles! However, responses from the care agencies were not what she was looking for. This was a difficult time for Hazel. She really needed consistent care, with the same positive and committed person, visiting her each day as promised. Ideally, she would want to choose her own carer but without the hassle of employing one. Care agencies were keen to help but could not promise that

the same person would be sent each time and they struggled to commit to sending a carer when Hazel needed one, rather than fitting her in on their busy daily schedule. Luckily, Theresa came across seakr, a community of local carers who love to look after people in their own neighbourhood. The carers are vetted, trained and support each other during holidays so that their clients are never left without the care they have been promised and deserve. Francis was one of two carers that seakr introduced to Hazel and they get on really well and do things like shopping and cooking together. Hazel will

soon be out and about again, able to live the independent life she loves. This match was made possible with our free risk assessment and care plan. seakr provides personal, home, overnight and respite care.

If you are looking for trusted and flexible home care in Surrey, Berkshire or London, we would love to hear from you. Call Cheryl on 01753 373083

WimbledonThen And Now A nostalgic look back at the past 50 years of The Tennis By Richard Jones Imagine if top professional tennis players such as Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Rafa Nadal and Novak Djokovic were not allowed to play at Wimbledon! Unthinkable as it may seem, that’s exactly how it was before the introduction of ‘Open’ Tennis fifty years ago this year. 2018 sees the fiftieth anniversary of the first “Open” Wimbledon Championships when amateur and professional players were able to compete together for the first time. Before 1968, only amateur players were allowed to play at Wimbledon and the world’s other major tournaments such as the Australian, French and US Championships. Many of the top players of the day such as Rod Laver, Ken Rosewall and Lew Hoad were touring professionals, and as such had to play mainly hard-fought exhibition matches in front of sparse crowds in much less glamorous venues around the world.

In 1968 all that changed. For years pressure had been building in the tennis world to end the distinction between amateur and professional players which was a throwback to the early days of the sport in the nineteenth century, when to be seen as a professional was highly frowned upon by Victorian society. Led by the British Lawn Tennis Association, various attempts were made during the twentieth century to introduce open tennis, but each time this radical proposal failed to gain sufficient support amongst the world’s major tennis nations. By 1967, however, the pressure for change had become an unstoppable force, and in the summer of that year Wimbledon staged an eight-man professional tournament on the Centre Court shortly after The Championships. This was the first time that professionals had ever played on the lawns of SW19, and the tournament was a great success. Afterwards, Wimbledon’s chairman Herman David told winner Rod Laver that he and his fellow-professionals were invited back to play in The Championships the following year.

So, it was that Britain’s unilateral action ushered in the world of professional tennis as we know it today. Laver won the first open Wimbledon tournament in 1968, having previously been champion as an amateur in 1961 and 1962. He won £2000, the first-time prize money had ever been paid at The Championships. Billie Jean King won the Ladies’ Singles, but her prize was just £750. Billie Jean later campaigned successfully for equal pay for women tennis players and remains an iconic figure in the ongoing campaign for women’s equality in all areas of life and all parts of the world.

a huge worldwide tennis boom, and Wimbledon’s annual profits have risen from just over £37,000 in 1968 to over £35 million today. Much of this surplus comes from TV rights, with Wimbledon now watched on television and online in more than 200 countries around the world. Attendances at Wimbledon have always been high, but improvements in facilities at the All England Club, in particular the opening of the new No.1 Court in 1997, have seen the aggregate attendance increase from 276,270 in 1968 to 473,372 in 2017. In 2009 an all-time record of 511,043 people visited Wimbledon during the fortnight. Queen in 2010

The contrasts between The Championships then and now are quite remarkable. Laver’s £2000 prize cheque back in 1968, a tidy sum at the time, simply does not compare with the £2.2 million Roger Federer and Garbine Muguruza took home as singles champions last year. Also in 2017, Martina Hingis and Jamie Murray received £100,000 for winning the Wimbledon Mixed Doubles title. Back in 1968, the Australian pairing of Margaret Court and Ken Fletcher shared just £450 for winning that event.

In line with other major world-class events, Wimbledon’s spectators are now referred to as “guests.” Guests now consume 110,000 scones, 86,000 ice creams, 76,000 sandwiches, 30,000 pizzas, and 17,000 portions of fish and chips each year. Far and away Wimbledon’s champion food item, however, is the great British strawberry. Wimbledon’s strawberries are picked on the day of sale at a farm in Kent and then rushed to Wimbledon. It is anticipated that around 150,000 bowls of strawberries and cream will be purchased during the thirteen playing days of the 2018 Wimbledon Championships. Back in 1968, Wimbledon had a small kiosk selling tennis magazines, books and photographs of the players. There were no other onsite retail facilities. Today the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum shop and its various satellite outlets around the grounds offer a comprehensive range of branded gifts and souvenirs. In 2017, 46,000 baseball caps, 30,000 towels, 17,000 tee-shirts, and 8,000 umbrellas were sold, all contributing to Wimbledon’s profits, ninety percent of which are paid over to the Lawn Tennis Association for the development of tennis in Great Britain. In half a century, Wimbledon has been transformed from a national treasure to an iconic global event. Who knows what the next fifty years may bring? Photographs kindly supplied by the AELTC

PARITY IN PARENTAL

DRUG EDUCATION

Barry Evans co-founder of Drug Education Uk gives us the highs and lows It’s been 4 years since Bob Tait of ‘Trust The Process’ Harley St, Education Services submitted an article to Darling informing Parents, on what was then worryingly trending as social recreational drug use/misuse and the need to communicate the very concerning issues connected to NPS (Novel Psychoactive Substances) aka Legal Highs et al. That term ‘misuse’ is often misunderstood by those who at that time were experimenting with chemicals that had not been fully researched and/or tested to standards labelled ‘NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION’, where the term ‘legal’ subconsciously creates ignorance to every warning signs when considering the use of such chemicals. Early in 2016 a BBC documentary (The Last Days of Legal Highs) identified a particular chemist who, in 2009, created the very chemicals that were fatally wounding our population, across a variety of age groups. His primary testing methodology was to try them on himself, before unleashing his chemicals to a global network of lawful suppliers. A direct relationship to these ‘research chemicals’ and other substances was cause or coincidental to an increase in mental health issues amongst our young people. The overall governmental ‘control measure’ was to produce a new piece of drug legislation called the ‘Psychoactive Substances Act 2016’ – a law intended to restrict the production, sale and supply of “legal highs”; having the intention

to shut down the retailers of legal highs with immediate effect from 26th May 2016. As to its own legislative effect, we may have to wait perhaps at least another 4 years or more, as ‘Spice’ (synthetic cannabis) is still rife in not just our prisons but problematic in larger cities like Birmingham and Manchester. The good news is they are not as frequently available, however, there will always be a stock pile to use and be swept up from the dealer stockists on the dark web or black market. Vaping JULES and taking certain medicines with alcohol have taken on current trend at parties - JUULING being the latest youth trend. Other drug related legislation has seen drivers affected by a new Section 5A of the Road Traffic Act 1988, where a saliva type test for illegal and medicinal substances has been implemented. Bob still educates on the concerns about substance misuse, to pupils, parents and staff in schools across the UK. He and I, the co-founder of DRUG EDUCATION UK, continue to deliver a programme of information that engages young people to make informed choices that are designed to protect them and those around them. Drug Education is NOT compulsory in school – FACT! Some people believe that ‘prevention is better than cure’, but in an age where people take risks above and beyond what anyone would ever have perceived we would or could do; at a time when we have more treatment available for substance misuse than ever before – then

it’s not just parents, pupils and staff who need continually updating and educating on drugs, drug trends and how to support their children, family and their community. This type of educational exchange shouldn’t stop at school – Industry is very well placed to educate its personnel to good effect – it has the ability to improve performance, productivity and re-motivate people to better effect. Take Cannabis for example: Although they say “… ignorance is no defence!” sadly it is! Although a very weak one, nevertheless a defence. As frequently I am asked – which is the worst drug? Or cannabis is far safer than alcohol! DISCUSS – questions and statements that give me a superb foundation from which to work MOOD* on a person’s denial of problematic use or unreasonable comparisons. How do we compare a drug that is smoked, to one that is drunk, one that delivers carbon monoxide on every draw of your breath, to that which we can naturally ingest with very little negative effect, if we drink to guidelines and understand how it works. [*Motivating Out Of Denial is a flexible tool for working on a person’s ability to accept truths related to potential drug user scenarios previously denied]. If you wish to discuss anything mentioned in this article please call Barry on 07778643209 or Bob on 07852333667. Or email: barry@dreduk.co.uk or bob@dreduk.co.uk dreduk.co.uk

Running and fundraising a match made in heaven

B

illions of pounds are raised every year for charities up and down the country by amateur runners like myself. Running events, even the likes of London Marathon, wouldn’t get anywhere near as much publicity if it wasn’t for the charities who have teams of runners racing for them and at the same time raising much needed funds. It really is a perfect match, a little like Meghan and Harry. I have signed up for my second Richmond Runfest half-marathon on September 16th, running for The Victoria Foundation again. This Richmond-based medical charity does wonderful work like providing young people with mobility aids, elderly and less mobile people with minibuses and sponsoring medical students who need financial assistance during their studies. Lorna Votier, Development Director of The Victoria Foundation said; ‘We are extremely grateful to all the runners and walkers raising funds for us again this year. I have been so inspired by them that I have signed up for my first half marathon this year! I am really looking forward to raising more funds that will help us to transform lives’.

by Marja-Leena Toseland

If you can spare three hours volunteering for The Victoria Foundation on 15th September in Kew Botanical Gardens to support its 10km runners then you can spend the day free of charge in the gardens including a visit to the recently reopened Temperate House. You will need to arrive at Kew Botanical Gardens by 8am, volunteer until 11am and then enjoy the iconic glasshouses, historic buildings, formal gardens, water features, tree top walk and much more. Your support will help TVF to transform more lives. For details of volunteering on 15th September contact The Victoria Foundation NOW – email enquiries@ thevictoriafoundation.org.uk

I’m slowly upping my running programme to include longer runs and also shorter faster ones that really seem to have an almost immediate impact on my pace. It’s also worth paying attention to your running technique, if in doubt have a session or two with a running coach who can correct you. You’ll reap the benefits immediately and they can have long term benefits to your overall wellbeing too. I’m pleased to say that middle age doesn’t stop you from improving your running performance. I’ve trained a couple of times week, meeting for runs in Richmond Park with my long-time running friends. It’s important to do a little strength training too and to stretch after your runs. Yoga and pilates are great to keep your muscles supple which helps to avoid injuries. Virginia WOOLF

H

opefully we soon can. A campaign for a lifesize statue is under way and needs our support. Arts and education charity Aurora Metro has launched a heritage project to create the first-ever life-sized, fullfigure bronze statue of the ground-breaking writer and publisher Virginia Woolf, whilst Aurora Metro Books are to publish Virginia Woolf in Richmond (ed. Peter Fullagar) offering an overview of the decade that Virginia Woolf lived and worked in Richmond with husband Leonard. Distinguished sculptor Laury Dizengremel, whose latest work is the statue of Lancelot 'Capability' Brown in Hammersmith has been commissioned to create the life-size sculpture which sees Woolf, in her 20s, sitting on a bench, as though waiting for passers-by to join her in conversation. Henrietta Garnett, author and Woolf’s great niece says, “The statue bears a remarkable Resemblance to my great aunt, the writer Virginia Woolf. It’s a wonderful idea to put it in Richmond where she spent 10 years of her life.” The plan is to site the artwork on the terraces at Richmond upon Thames Riverside.

Following a public consultation which was supported by 83% of residents who responded, the Charity is currently seeking to raise £50,000 by July 2019. Cheryl Robson, project leader adds: "As James Joyce, the other leading Modernist writer has long had a full-size statue in Dublin, it’s time that we honoured Virginia Woolf’s contribution not only to English literature but also to the on-going debate concerning female equality.” The statue and the book commemorate an important decade in Virginia Woolf’s life when she lived in the Bor-ough of Richmond with her husband Leonard and founded the Hogarth Press. It was an incredibly productive period of her life when she began experimenting with writing novels. They will both celebrate her influence on modernist literature, and the statue will act as a lasting and interactive memorial to her genius.

How can you help? Donations for the Statue are welcome via a paypal "Donate" button at http:// aurorametro.org/virginiawoolf-statue/ Like and follow us for latest news facebook.com/virginiawoolfstatue Twitter @VWoolfStatue

Virginia Woolf in Richmond (£16.99) will be out in Autumn 2018, and will be launched at the Richmond Literature Festival.

Can I have a ‘PRE-NUP’ if we are not getting married and are just living together?

‘Kind of’ – that’s the legal answer from Victoria Walker, a partner at Moore Blatch in Richmond

Y

ou can have a cohabitation agreement prepared instead. This is similar to a pre-nup in that it sets out agreed arrangements between you and your partner including your rights and responsibilities regarding your home and how you will deal 32

Why would you do this?

regarding disagreements between unmarried couples over property, the law is not as flexible as it is for married couples.

Court proceedings are prohibitively expensive and complicated. Unfortunately,

With property prices ridiculously high in London, you should protect what you’ve worked

with your finances whilst you are together as well as if you split up.

Therefore, if you are buying a property with someone it’s very important to set out how you own the property and what will happen if the relationship ends and you want the property sold. Such agreements are considered to be good evidence of what you both intended to happen in these circumstances, and if prepared properly the court should take them in to account. It’s also a very good idea to enter in to an agreement if someone is moving in to your property and you want to prevent them from having any claim over it in the future.

What if we are renting a property? A cohabitation agreement is still a useful way of setting out what you have agreed, for example how much rent you’ll each pay and who is responsible for paying what utilities.

It is important to set out how you own/rent the property and what will happen if the relationship ends

Would it work for flat mates?

What else can a cohabitation agreement cover?

Are there any problems with cohabitation agreements?

hard to save and achieve. Also, if your parents or other family members have lent or gifted you money, you will want to keep that safe too.

A cohabitation agreement can also cover agreements about personal belongings for example cars, antiques, valuables or inherited items with sentimental value. Should you split up, the court has no power to order maintenance payments for either individual unless there are children and only then in limited circumstances. If you want to make provision for your partner in case of a separation, then a cohabitation agreement is the best way by which this can be arranged. This can be particularly important where there are children.

When do we set up a cohabitation agreement?

gether but if that’s not possible you can do it afterwards.

Yes absolutely, this is not limited to couples.

They aren’t guaranteed to be upheld by the court. However, currently the general view is that, if prepared properly, they are taken in to account. They are considered to be contracts and are subject to those rules.

How much do they cost? £1,500 - £2,000 is a good guide though it does depend on how simple or complex the issues are and how many issues you have agreed with your partner.

FIELD NOTES: Painting the Anthropocene

F

ield Notes brings together two painters, Paul Smith and Katharine Le Hardy in an exhibition documenting new landscapes to produce a radical vision of what we consider nature in the age of the Anthropocene. Some of the structures, often abandoned, which are left on these islands are from buildings on Platts Eyot and Lots Ait. Katharine has also painted on Eel Pie Island. In their very different ways, Smith and Le Hardy tear up their source materials of photographic documentary and encounter with landscape to produce a radical vision of habitats under the pressure of human presence. In this new age of the Anthropocene, these two painters mediate lost and repurposed human structures entwined with vegetal life. Old plastic piping creeping through allotment grounds, the soft decay of old wooden buildings on the boundaries of cities: through scratch, fleck, flake and drip, Smith and Le Hardy’s works remind us that what we consider ‘nature’ has always been framed through the aesthetic, and that a new discourse of paint can help us to see the strange luminosity of a world in which

34

the human is an alwaystangible presence in the natural world. Paul has exhibited widely in the UK and was recently part of the touring Contemporary British Painting Prize and in late 2017 Don’t Walk Walk Gallery of Deal hosted his solo show ‘This is This’. Other notable exhibitions include The ING Discerning Eye (2017, 2016), Griffin Art Prize (2015), Neo Art Prize (2015) and solo shows ‘Noise Rings’ at Farnham Maltings (2016) and ‘The Ice House’ at Northampton’s The Sanctuary Gallery (2014). paulsmithart.co.uk

Kiko Matthews solo trans-Atlantic rower smashes World Record “I didn’t get scared by the adverse conditions, I just got on with things. What can you do about it? You have no choice but to carry on, like in life. It was temporary relentlessness.” The tumour on her pituitary gland caused severe memory loss, psychosis, diabetes, osteoporosis, insomnia and muscle wastage. Briton Kiko Matthews, 36, celebrates arriving in Barbados having smashed the World Record as the fastest woman to complete a solo trans-Atlantic row in 50 days. Photo by Anthony Ball

R

ecently, Wimbledon resident, Kiko Matthews, 36, arrived in Port St.Charles, Barbados late one evening in spring, smashing the World Record as the fastest woman to complete a solo trans-Atlantic row. Kiko, finished the 3000 mile journey, from Gran Canaria, single-handed and unsupported in 49 days, breaking the previous record of 56 days. Having only learnt to row last year Kiko, rowed the Atlantic alone in 21-foot long Soma of Essex for up to 16 hours a day for seven weeks, slept in twohour shifts, dealt with 70 foot waves, sharks, hand and feet blisters and the least prevailing winds. She was her own doctor, mechanic, skipper, friend and worst enemy in one of the toughest physical and mental challenges known to man. Only five women have previously completed the journey solo.

Arriving to scenes of jubilation, with crowds lining the coast line and yachts sounding their horns, the Union Jack toting Brit rowed in after what she described as one of the hardest days of rowing in the last two months. Kiko was met by her family – mother Genevieve Matthews, father Paddy Matthews, brother Robin Matthews and nephew Louis Matthews – and was noticeably relaxed, calm and full of energy. Kiko says;” The thought that eight months ago I was lying in hospital having my brain operated on and now I am here having rowed the Atlantic, I guess I am a bit proud. I have shown that anyone can attempt anything given the right attitude, belief, and support,” she says. “I want to use my story to inspire women to challenge themselves.” If I did ever get down I thought of the people willing me on, I wanted to do it for them. The stories they sent me supported me incredibly. By the last two

weeks I was just totally content and at peace, I didn’t even listen to music.” In completing the challenge, Kiko has so far raised over £90,000, of her target of £100,000, for King’s College Hospital Intensive Care Unit who twice removed a brain tumour from her. In 2009, Kiko, was diagnosed with Cushing’s disease, a rare condition that made even walking up stairs impossible. The second was removed in August 2017 whilst she was in training for the Atlantic crossing. On land she has been virtually powered by a team of women, through her 100TogetHER initiative. The collaboration of women from all walks of life, have come together to support Kiko financially and with skills highlighting what can be achieved through community, challenge and collaboration and it’s their names which adorn the boat. Part of 100TogetHER is Britain’s most successful female Olympian, Katherine Grainger and Tracy Edwards - who skippered the first all-female crew in the Whitbread Round the World Yacht Race. She was also coached by Guin Batten, the 2000 Olympics silver medalist. Part of her fitness training was also sponsored by the Louise Whelan and the wonderful trainers at Fit8 in Wimbledon. riday 11th May saw 450 guests enjoying a Laurent Perrier champagne reception in a stunning marquee sitting proudly on Richmond Green - a glamorous start to a glorious fundraising Ball. Guests included television star Amanda Redman and brilliant mimic, Jon Culshaw. Amanda cheerfully drew the lucky raffle tickets and Jon gave a hilarious selection of his famous impressions, including Donald Trump and Andy Murray. There followed an emotional film depicting the work of this year's charities, Home-Start,

Momentum Children's Charity and My Life Films. This inspired the guests to raise whopping £27,000 in the Live Auction alone. After a sumptuous four-course dinner and the excitement of the auctions and raffle, guests danced the night away with the amazing band Fake Tan until carriages at 1a.m. Magically, after all the guests had gone and within only a few hours, the marquee was transformed into a lively craft tent for all the fun of the May Fair on Saturday. Dog owner charged by hind in Richmond Park

Dog walkers urged to stick to the busiest areas and keep their pets on leads and away from the deer during the birthing season: May to July • over 300 deer are born in Bushy and Richmond Parks. • every year, a number of baby deer have been killed at the parks by dog attacks. • female deer protect their newborns by hiding them in bracken or long grass, making them difficult to detect. • deer will defend their young, should people or animals come too close, potentially behaving aggressively or even charging. Richmond resident, Sir David Attenborough, said: “Richmond Park is a National Nature Reserve and a fabulous place to spot red and fallow deer. The herds are wonderful to watch but please do remember that they are wild, unpredictable animals and their space must be respected”. West led K♥, Q♥ and a low heart to East’s A♥, which South trumped. When declarer played off ♠AK, she sighed deeply when East showed out. This meant that she had a trump loser and now she felt that she would have to rely on the diamond finesse. She cashed K♦ and led 7♦ from dummy. When East played low, South put on J♦ and this lost to West’s Q♦. One down.

The bad trump split is a blow, but there is a silver lining: declarer knows that West must win Q♠. Before conceding this trick, South should set up an unpleasant situation for West. She cashes three rounds of clubs (it doesn’t matter if West could trump the final round), and then she plays another trump. West wins Q♠, but now look at her choices: if West leads a heart, declarer can trump in dummy and throw away a diamond from hand; if West could lead a club, the same ruff/discard occurs. So, West will lead a diamond. Declarer runs this to her J♦, and the contract is made.

Harnessing FEAR

W

hen I was a kid, I used to love craggy beaches, pretending to be a nimble goat, leaping effortlessly from ledge to ledge. So when a climbing instructor mate of mine offered to take me to White Spider’s indoor walls, I thought it would be fun, and a challenge. Truthfully, I arrived feeling very edgy. But as soon as I entered the cavernous halls and saw the wall ahead, my step brightened and shoulders relaxed.

“Err… Lynds, that’s the kiddies wall,” sighed Andy. ‘We’re going to start over here”. “No way!” I gasped. Ahead loomed The Wall of Death. (Well, a wall three stories high). “Can I just go up a few feet?” “Nope”, insisted Andy. “You’re going right to the top, then I want you to lean back out, feet flat against the wall, and walk down.” Surely he was joking. I was a total novice. He wasn’t. After strapping me into a harness and rope system and tying a figure of eight that would have impressed Jack Sparrow, he told me to “Try and pick the blues, it’s the easiest climb”. The walls are dotted with different coloured rocks jutting out creating routes. Easy ones give you a deep grip and foothold. The hardest, and you cling with anything you can… in my case, breasts, nails and tongue. With all colours scattered over the walls, a novice can be climbing alongside a professional on the same rock face. A good thing, really. When I finally crawled to the very top an experienced woman next to me helped me over the next terrifying hurdle. “Lean back and just hold the rope. Trust… you’ll be safe.” She held the small of my back as I gulped in fear. Letting go is the hardest thing. Total trust the ropes won’t break, and that your partner on the ground is ready to take the slack should you fall. (Health and Safety Tip: Don’t climb with ex lovers). Grimacing, I made it down. “Now up this,” ordered Andy directing me to a corner and instructing me to place a foot on each face of it! Insane. He was beginning to drive me up the wall. Nonetheless, with each varied ascent, I felt my confidence and imagination grow. By the last climb, I was proud to be the first goat to conquer Everest. whitespiderclimbing.com Package of 10 day passes £94.50 Beginner’s Course Six hours from £55
