Five years later and every issue of Darling still feels like a minor miracle – at first the fear of all those blank pages that need to be filled, the fretting and frustration that comes with running any small business, then the growing excitement as the first stories begin to take shape, the juggling of editorial, advertising and social pages, the dawning realisation that Wimbledon never runs out of amazing news and extraordinary views, the hectic days before deadline, and then, at last, holding in my hands the printed culmination of it all like a new born baby, and just as proud! And every time I say to myself, ‘This is the best of them all!’ Of course great stories like our exclusive with Sharlely Becker and her exciting life with Boris, Fine Cell, an organisation which teaches embroidery to prisoners in Wandsworth and our inspirational Victoria Nicols feeds my passion for this business. It’s often the extraordinary woman I come across daily – the mothers, wives, entrepreneurs who balance their lives on a knife’s edge that I salute and that inspire me. Serious Stuff When I became pregnant, I was working in a senior position

for a Consultancy firm in the City. Although there were some women senior to me in the organisation who had families, it had never occurred to me the sacrifices they made handing over their children to nannies and nurseries, and missing some of the key moments of their children’s lives.

the owners to find out more about them. I was amazed to find out that the vast majority of people running these businesses were women in a similar situation to me. Many had been career women who had also made the decision to change direction once children arrived.

Once my daughter Freya was born, I realised that their choices would not work for me. Staying with my firm would have meant long hours, being willing to travel and work away from home for extended periods of time, and competing against people who were ready and able to do all these things. The reality is that whatever the best intentions of employers, for many women who are parents, the glass ceiling is still a reality.

Over time I began to think about ways in which I could help these businesses succeed. I started to run Mums’ Night Off events

When Freya was a few months old I set up the Mums on the Go website. Local mums I knew were telling me that it was hard to find out about things to do with their little ones in the area. So I decided to create a website which puts local child-friendly businesses and mums in touch with each other. To ensure that the businesses were truly childfriendly, I began meeting with

Early Days Victoria: I grew up in Belfast, Northern Ireland where I developed a passion for sailing and rugby, two sports I enjoy immensely, although I stick to spectating at rugby now. I left the Emerald Isle when I was in my early twenties and spent a few years working across Europe with Ernst and Young before meeting my husband, who is Scottish, and moving to London to start a new job with Deloitte Consulting. We lived in central London for a short time before getting married and then moved out to Wimbledon. We have been in Wimbledon for 5 years and it feels very much like home, especially now that we have started a family here. My favourite place is by far Wimbledon Common. I love the expanse of open space. It’s perfect for a picnic on a hot summers day or a brisk walk on a frosty morning. Every Boxing Day we have a ritual where we walk from the Windmill through the common to Richmond Park to watch the deer before heading to the pub for a pint of Guinness.

FINE CELL WORK AT SOUTHSIDE HOUSE Prisoners’ creative needle work on display in Wimbledon

O

n Tuesday 30th April Southside House in Wimbledon is hosting a special one day exhibition and sale of beautiful hand sewn work from the charity Fine Cell Work. A social enterprise established in 30 UK prisons, Fine Cell Work works with skilled volunteers who train prisoners, 75% of them men, in paid, creative needlework that helps them leave prison with the confidence and financial

means to stop offending. The standard of the work is outstanding and in recent years the charity has been commissioned by interior designers such as Nina Campbell, English Heritage, the Jerwood Foundation and the Prince of Wales. In 2010 the ‘Wandsworth Quilt’ produced in HMP Wandsworth was exhibited in the hugely successful British Quilts exhibition at the V&A. Fine Cell Work have done commissions for

embroidered, shoes, bedspreads, rugs and quilts, as well as the beautiful embroidered cushions they are well-known for. The event at Southside House (30th April) has been organised by Jacqui Wood, Cherry Conway-Hughes and Nicole Winterbourne, all Wimbledon residents and Fine Cell Work volunteer teachers at HMP Wandsworth. Jacqui and Cherry have been teaching embroidery Prisoner working in his cell

Their dedicated work was recently the subject of a documentary piece on BBC2’s Culture Show and was recognised last autumn as part of Fine Cell Work’s London volunteer group with The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest honour that can be given to UK volunteer groups and the equivalent of an MBE for an organisation.

“We’re thrilled Southside House has invited Fine Cell Work to hold this event.” says Jacqui “It’s a wonderful opportunity for people to see for themselves the quality and

imaginative work produced in prisons being showcased in a unique and beautiful setting”. interview

“One famous person in a house is more than enough!” Darling’s exclusive interview with the gorgeous Sharlely Becker

W

e met at Lilly’s (Boris’s nickname for her), gracious home looking out on the bleak, wintry common on a freezing day in March. She had been bright and bubbly on the phone, and was even more charming and delightful in the flesh. If it weren’t for the classic looks of the model she used to be, and the fact she was married to one of Wimbledon’s most fabulous celebrities, I could have mistaken her for any one of our local yummy mummies. She was generous with her time, and happy to chat away quite unaffectedly about her early years, her famous husband, and her life in Wimbledon.

realised it was great way to make money and have a lot of fun! It was tough, but I had a great time. You have so much more energy when you’re young. I came to London hoping to work here, but it didn’t work out and it’s a hard place to be poor! Then I saw an ad in the Evening Standard – I remember it like yesterday – to train to become a

croupier. When an opportunity came to work abroad I jumped at the chance and ended up working as a croupier in Israel. I made good money, but I realised that my life was drifting, and I decided to try to pursue my original dream of modelling and travelling. That’s how I ended up in Miami, where I lived and worked until I met Boris.

I was born in Holland. When I was three both my parents were killed in a car accident, so my sister and I were raised by my grandparents. I’ll always be very, very grateful to them. Rotterdam was a small town, and I was always an explorer. So luckily I was scouted by an Italian model agency when I was a teenager. My aunt had to accompany me to Milan because I was under eighteen. Then I

interview Meeting Boris It was a Sunday afternoon at a sports cafe in Miami, a casual place where you didn’t need to dress up. Boris arrived in his car and got out, and my girlfriends and I recognised him immediately. But I wasn’t at all phased by celebrities by then. He noticed me and he asked the owner of the café, who was a friend of his, for my number. I made him call me for three months. I knew what he wanted, of course, and I was determined not to make it easy for him. It was only when a mutual friend contrived a “chance meeting” at a restaurant that we finally met up again. We played telephone-tag after that; he would phone and I wouldn’t answer, or I would phone and he wouldn’t pick up. Eventually we arranged a dinner meeting. I turned up 45 minutes late on purpose. It was really weird when we just clicked. I thought to myself, ‘Hey, he’s actually kind of sweet’. It was one of those dates when you start speaking and you never stop, and with never an awkward moment, we went from starter, to main course, to dessert, and then coffee. Eventually the restaurant was empty and we got kicked out. It turned out we’d been living in the same building and we’d never bumped into each other! It was the beginning of our love story. Wimbledon I remained in Miami and he was living in Switzerland, so it became one of those long

distance relationships. Eventually I moved to Zurich to live with him. We were travelling all the time because of his work. We decided to get married. Or rather, he just decided. He said, ‘Okay, we’re going to get married.’ We then decided to move to London. When Boris persuaded me to look at Wimbledon I was happily surprised! It reminded me of when I was little, the horseriding, the parks, bike-riding, easy access to the city, and lots of freedom for the kids. I love the Village. I love my butcher (Butcher & Grill) and he knows how I like my chicken! Now I know almost everybody. We love the local shops and places: Matches, St Cassien, San Lorenzo, Côtes, Aubaine, Lulu Blonde and others. Cannizaro House is beautiful, the gardens and the restaurant. I put all my friends up there when they visit!

important for him to learn all the new technology. I love the idea that he’s going to grow up speaking like a proper little English boy. But I don’t like him calling me ‘mummy’ the way the English do. I prefer ‘mama’ like in Holland. As for the food, I love sausage and mash, Sunday roasts – and full English breakfasts, especially after a long night out! I like the English designers, the different styles at Portobello Market, for example, the Kate Middleton look, flower dresses and wellies, the Kate Moss look, LK Bennett – you can play with English fashion and be anything you want.

The future I want to fill the house with children! I like staying fit, dabbling with modelling, and supporting Boris. It’s great fun doing TV shows with him, travelling with him, and then being able to take off my makeup and just be a mum. More than anything, I love being a mother. Now I have toddler apps on my phone, and wherever we go I’ve got something for my son to play with. When we fly he plays on an iPad so he keeps learning. He’s got more books than toys, but I know it’s

A Summer Party Expert Carole Cory’s Top Tips

The right date is important - avoiding sports occasions that may continue till mid-evening e.g. Wimbledon Tennis etc. Send your invites out immediately. A good theme gets your guests into the swing of the event. Planning your perfect party is great fun – make loads of lists: 1. Décor: Is there a theme or maybe just colour theme to pull it all together – balloon trees, flowers, tablecloths, napkins, coloured glassware. 2. Menu: The favourite for the summer, are BBQ’s – there is nothing so appealing as the smell of food cooking on a charcoal BBQ to open the appetite, delicious! Maybe go for a buffet menu or substantial canapés menu, such as mini fish and chips served in a cone , mini burgers etc – these are also great fun and as the name denotes, must be substantial, so that your guests have a good meal. 3. Band/Disco: This is personal choice. Live music is great and really gives a fantastic atmosphere. A good Disco also gives a wonderful “get up and dance” feel. 4. Marquee: If you want to ensure you are covered (literally) by any eventualities with the weather. They come in all shapes and sizes. 5. Equipment Rental: Ensure that all crockery, cutlery, tablecloths, napkins and glasses all match. Lots of colours are available for linen ware. An example is, if you were having a Moroccan theme, you may like to have “wild and wacky” colours – different table cover colours such as Tango Orange,

old fashioned way, Chameleon with your look, you Sunshine Yellow, Fuchsia Pink, Lime Green. What bright red and swa ‘transform as you perform’. What a wow effect! vintage look “à la M role does fashion play in your life?

TEENAGERS AND THEIR SLEEP! What if your children could sleep deeply, be in a better mood and have more energy and focus in the day? By Alessandro Ferullo Why is sleep so important for our children's health? Our teenagers spend so much time on computers both at school and at home, use their mobile phones a great deal and as a result are often wired before bedtime and cannot go to sleep easily. When they finally do sleep it is often not the deep restful sleep they need as they are growing up. Electromagnetic stress disturbs their energy and our energy greatly. They may wake up tired, moody and stressed which is painful to see in young people. If they could go to sleep more quickly and sleep deeply it could be life changing in many cases.

The Nikken Sleep System combines the energy of the Earth (magnetic technology) and the energy of the sun (Far-Infrared Technology), a combination of features that assist the processes of physical

and mental recharging that form the basis of sleep. It helps take the stress out of the body while we sleep and encourages the sleep that helps your body restore itself naturally. Who are Nikken, and how does the Sleep System work? Nikken is one of the top providers of energy and wellness products in Japan and was established over 35 years ago and is now in over 30 countries. The Kenko (health) Sleep System features a grid of magnets that replicate the Earth’s magnetic flow, producing a cocoon of magnetism that envelops you. This helps restore the natural balance between the sleeper and the physical world. Do you use the Sleep System yourself ? I have been using the Nikken Sleep System for several years on myself and my family with amazing results. We all have more energy, feel rejuvenated and energized when we wake up every morning! Please call for a free demonstration of the Sleep System or ask for details on our regular Wellness Talks in Wimbledon at the Antoinette

Property Swapping

34 april–may 2013 | darlingmagazine.co.uk

Chris Thurlow

I

s your house too small for you and your growing family? Are your parents finding their house too large now the children have moved out? The answer might be to swap house with your parents. The benefits of “property swapping” between parents and their children can be considerable. Apart from resolving the problem of house too big versus house too small it can also represent good inheritance tax (IHT) planning. In this way parents might be able to pass more assets onto their children free of inheritance tax. However as with any legal transaction it is essential you take independent legal advice, as your circumstances may differ from others and it is important that you understand all the rules. Below Chris Thurlow, Partner at Hart Brown discusses the benefits and pitfalls of “property swapping”. Inheritance tax Often the parents’ home is worth more than their children’s house. If that is the case and the parents swap houses with their child, there may be an element

of gifting (i.e. the excess in value between the two properties is given as a gift to the child). This gift could be taken into account on the death of the parents if the parent has not survived long enough following the gift. Whether there is an IHT liability will also depend on whether the exchange is permanent or whether the parents want to keep an interest in their property. In those circumstances it would form part of their estate on their demise. Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) Even though no cash would be changing hands, SDLT may be payable on the open market value of the lower value property. Any SDLT would be payable by the children as “purchaser” of the larger property. This is a complicated area of law which is frequently changing. It is important to ensure that this is checked before any action is taken. Mortgages If either party has a mortgage this can complicate matters. The lenders must agree and the mortgage may have to switch over too. This could impact the SDLT position.

Nursing home fees If the property swap is primarily because the parents want to give more assets to their children they could be seen by the local authority as deliberately depriving themselves of assets. Local Authorities take different views on the disposing of assets but it could become an issue should one of the parents need to go into care. Parents should look at this in the context of their whole welfare planning and ensure they have sufficient to provide care for themselves should they need it. Wills Whenever someone’s estate changes in size or make-up always look at the effect it might have on their will. What if there are other children? How do you balance giving a property to one child and not the other? How will this be reflected in their will? If you are considering swapping your primary residence with your parents or children, independent legal advice is essential. Contact Chris on 0208 947 8171 or email wills@hartbrown.co.uk for further information.

THE SKY’S THE LIMIT Neil Norton lets you have some fun when it comes to designing your dreams

Who are you? My name is Neil Norton and after spending 12 years working for high-end companies and furniture brands, I decided to set up Open Plan Designs in 2010 and offer clients a truly bespoke service myself. Any size, material or finish without restrictions. We make bespoke living spaces. That could mean kitchens, wardrobes, vanity units, home offices, storage or something else entirely. Basically, if you want any kind of high-end, madeto-measure furniture, we can produce it. What do you offer that other furniture companies can’t? Choice, primarily. If you want rose-pink kitchen cabinets, that’s what you’ll get! If you’d like your wardrobes lined with

walnut or cedar, we can do that, too. We’ll work with you to establish exactly what it is you’re after – we even negotiate with builders and suppliers on your behalf to reduce your stress levels. And then we’ll make it to the finest possible standards. ‘No’ is not a word in our vocabulary. And because we don’t pay rents on large showrooms, we can offer value for money. Bespoke furniture doesn’t necessarily have to mean bespoke prices.

It’s one thing you telling me how brilliant you are. What do your previous clients say? Lots of nice things, luckily. We pride ourselves on building good relationships with clients, and many remain friends long after the project has finished.

‘If you want rose-pink kitchen cabinets, that’s what you’ll get!’

OK, I’m interested. What happens now? We will come to your home and carry out a comprehensive lifestyle audit, finding out exactly what your personal style and tastes are. That way, together we can come up with a design you love. Once we’ve agreed a budget, we’ll draw up plans to show you where everything will go and exactly how your furniture will look. The beauty of having it made-to-measure is that we can work around any problem areas or difficult spaces.

‘It was great working with Open Plan Designs. Neil was an excellent communicator and we created a kitchen that I’m more than happy with.’ Broosk Saib, Interior Designer

LOCAL MUSIC PRODUCER JOHN MERRIMAN UP FOR MERTON CIVIC AWARD

S

ince its inception in 2007 Crown Lane Studio has been an inspirational ‘music house’ for musicians, both from this community and the wider music industry.

After a near-death experience where John Merriman (director) and his wife were swept down a river in a car, they decided to throw everything into building their studio. It has now grown to include creative rehearsal spaces; video and management support; an educational program and wider support for community activities in the area. John has been nominated for a Merton Civic Award for his work with the local community and the arts. “Using my knowledge and skills to bring a community together, by coordinating things like the Morden Town Centre Jubilee Street Party and subsequent Christmas Street Party means that relationships between businesses

and the community are formed. This of course helps business, but also changes the feel of the whole community.” John plans to continue his involvement with the community, and is currently working with excluded children from the borough’s schools, as well as composing a piece, and rehearsing it with pupils from Perseid and Cricket Green Special Schools for a performance later this year at the Royal Albert Hall. www.crownlanestudio.co.uk T: 020 85405643

They tuck you up, your Mum and Dad… By Kate Greenhalgh

A

s they grow up, our little chicks are taking over the media; new voices lifted against us, how we have messed everything up for them. It’s a bit annoying really: one minute you are getting up at the crack of dawn to take them to their riding lessons, the next you are being criticised for handing them a poisoned chalice. Poor old helicopter parents have turned into the asbo generation who squandered the planet; and worse, we are going to live to at least 100, costing an absolute fortune because our pensions are worthless; guzzling our way through our offspring’s inheritances in the form of antidementia medication and expensive care homes, and being a pain at Christmas time.

Here then, is my inventory of what our generation has ever done for them: • • • • • • • • •

Disneyland Mobiles Holidays in nice places where it doesn’t rain every day Clothes from Top Shop, and not knitted by Grandma Wider access to university education Teachers who don’t throw chalk at you Social tolerance and diversity Lifts - to school, to sport, to the station, to parties, to friends, lifts, lifts, lifts, endless lifts Pizza Express

Actually, you can probably add to this list at will: Oxfam, Google, the cup-cake renaissance, films with George Clooney in, and so forth. We have been amazing. And here is how our legacy is actually shaping up for them: 46 april–may 2013 | darlingmagazine.co.uk

Environmental catastrophe Unaffordable housing Graduate unemployment A collapsing national health service The death of Faith Terrorism Krispy Kreme Debt

Oops. You see where I’m going with this - every benefit conferred upon our children has come at a some sort of hideous, equal and opposite cost. We didn’t know! We thought we were spoiling you, but not in a bad way! We’re sorry! We meant well! At least we didn’t send you over the top at Passchendaele! But we hope that, in thirty years’ time, you will have sorted it all out and can hand on something better to your children. Especially Disneyland.
