We go to print with a spring in our step, the sun shining unseasonably, the blossoms blossoming, and the daffodils doing what daffodils do best. And we can’t help being reminded of Browning’s immortal words, ‘Oh, to be in England now that April’s there’, which beautifully sum up the bittersweet notion that the anticipation of an English summer is often more joyful than the real thing! So it’s in that mood of resolute British optimism that we bring you a spring edition packed with promise and bursting with possibilities, perfectly exemplified by Charlene Braniff ’s bubbly collection of eccentric hats and fascinating fascinators, big plans for beautifying Wimbledon, now declared a Business Improvement District, advice on how to market yourselves without upsetting Olympic copyright rules and the glamorous goings on at TVF’s red carpet lm event. inspiring woman

Hats off toCharlene Braniff

Creative powerhouse in our midst

Where did you grow up, and when did you discover your creative streak? I grew up in Belfast, Northern Ireland. I rst discovered my creative streak when my mother entered me into a creative competition for a local newspaper at the age of 3 and I won rst place.

What brought you to Wimbledon? I moved to Wimbledon almost 7 years ago after receiving an unconditional offer to study Costume Design at Wimbledon College of Art. I love Wimbledon’s strong theatre links and rich cultural mix. I often complete my conceptual work in Cannizaro Park – one of my favourite places in Wimbledon.

What were your key inspirational highlights growing up? I achieved the title of ‘Young Artist and Designer of the Year’ on two occasions as well as the award for ‘Outstanding Academic Achievement’. I’ve won the Gold Award for ‘Industry Matters – Textile and Clothing Innovation Challenge’. My designs have featured in Accent magazine as well as Northern Ireland’s top selling bridal journal. My work has been exhibited in Moscow, 6

industry. My rst experience working in Couture was at the Philip Treacy studios. My rst day there was the day that Philip’s muse, eccentric icon and Tattler Fashion Director, Isabella Blow died - it was a surreal experience. Everything

inspiring woman stopped and everyone went onto autopilot, making funeral hats for celebrities and dyeing all of the flowers and feathers in the studio black. The famous Philip Treacy ship hat that Isabella had modelled years previously was brought into the studio and edited with ostrich feathers to go on top of her cofn. Other roles I’ve had included working on Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz at the Barbican. I’ve worked as a ‘Sparkle Specialist’ on shows such as Strictly Come Dancing and Dancing on Ice. I was responsible for the embellishments that adorn the dresses on the shows, as well as the costume jewellery and accessories (all made by hand) worn by the contestants. Swarovski Crystal has been one of my key inspirations for as long as I can remember. I am also working with Merton Adult

Education in their brand new premises around the corner from the Wimbledon Library, running jewellery courses and other exciting projects which are in the pipeline.

What is your Mantra in life? My mantra is: ‘Always be true to myself ’. I’m inspired by the words of the poet Robert Frost: ‘Two roads diverged in a wood, and I – I took the one less travelled by, and that has made all the difference.’ I would love to bring my various skill sets into theatrical production and film. My aim is to no longer do bespoke but instead to set myself a new creative challenge working in a team environment within production. Artist’s works that I admire within the industry are the film director Tim Burton embodied by his work in Alice in

A WIMBLEDON FAMILY’S JOURNEY INTO FOSTERING

E

very day children in Merton and across the country will come into care and need the help of a foster family, but there just are not enough fostering families to look after them all. Fostering Fortnight 2012, from 14–27 May, marks the annual drive to recruit more families to this crucial task. Ruth (34) and Richard (44) who foster for Merton, describe how fostering has proved the perfect fit for their busy family life. Ruth says: ‘My partner Richard and I started to foster for Merton Council in 2009 and we have now fostered two children aged under two. At the time our own children, Ale and Millie, were two and four. In that time I’ve heard a variety of comments from people in relation to our decision to foster ranging from: “You must be saints to do this,” to “You must be mad!” I started fostering as a career after an attempt to juggle work, childcare, housework, our marriage and a social life! Fostering is now much more than a job to me – it’s my vocation. I love what we do. It is such a privilege being given the opportunity to shape a baby’s rst few precious months which will have benecial consequences

for the child’s life. When I collected our current foster baby from hospital, when he only weighed 5lb 12oz, I promised him and his mum that I would always do my very best for him.’ Richard says: ‘It’s not always easy but the babies make it rewarding. It’s also a two-way street; as we provide for the child I can see the benets to our whole family.’ Ruth continues: ‘We chose to foster children under the age of two years of age, as it tted in with our own family dynamic really well. I would highly recommend this job to any mum who wants to spend more time with their family and is struggling to t everything in!

We’re always asked if it is hard to say goodbye – it always is, but the sense of fullment as you see your baby guest placed back with their birth family or their new “forever family” easily outweighs the loss. I’m involved in decisions about the babies’ lives, and my views and opinions are valued. We wouldn’t have it any other way.’ Merton Council want to recruit all types of carers for all age ranges of children. For more information on fostering in Merton, or for an information pack, contact Merton Council Foster Carer Recruitment on freephone: 0800 073 0874 or visit: www.merton.gov.uk/ fostering

My Journey from the Local photographer Keith Hern – in remission and on a mission

F

and in mental meltdown I went to hospital, cancer was conrmed, leaving me to tell my wife and daughter – the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do.

Three years later, in May 2007, I got a call that changed my life, when I was diagnosed with throat cancer, following the discovery of a small lump in my neck which was tested. Terried

First, an operation to remove the primary tumour from the back of my tongue. Next, three teeth pulled before treatment, and then two rounds of 24/7 ve days of chemotherapy, with eleven days off between, and after. Then I needed to have a face mask made to undergo radiotherapy, daily for six weeks. The side effects are

ollowing consecutive redundancies in the early noughties I opted for a career swap from corporate sales into photography, a move inspired by a love of travel, and the work of Australian photographer Peter Lik.

unpleasant, and a week after starting I couldn’t eat, had lost my taste, and wasn’t sleeping properly as I had to sip water 24/7, so I lost two-and-ahalf stone in the six weeks. After treatment I waited six weeks before having the tests, from which I needed one more operation to remove the secondary tumour in my neck – had I not found this or acted on it I would never have seen 2008. Eighteen months later I went trekking in Iceland for the Royal Marsden Hospital, as a ‘thanks for saving my life’. I raised £7,000, and when back wrote a book about my journey, using photographs I’d taken. Bangers & Mash was published in November 2009 (www.throatcancersurvivor.co.uk), and three weeks later I was told cancer was back and my chances of survival were 10-40%. In 2010

I ended up being interviewed in the Daily Mail and on ITV’s ‘This Morning’ about my experiences, the ‘Michael Douglas’ factor! I then turned Bangers & Mash into an inspirational talk called ‘Out of Adversity’, and am working with www.inspiredlife.org giving presentations. I have signed up for another trek, this time to Nepal in November, and need to raise £3,500 minimum (www.justgiving.com/Keith-Hern), and will have my follow-up book published late November this year. And on the travel front, the big plan is to rent our house out and spend a year going from Alaska to Chile and up to Rio overland. Aiming to head off in mid 2015. Meanwhile, on with the photography.

With Yamaha’s Silent System, a real piano can perform like a digital one - allowing silent practice without disturbing family or neighbours. Available on all Yamaha pianos, you get all the benefits of a real acoustic instrument - the tone only real hammers on strings and a wooden soundboard can deliver, plus the touch of a genuine piano action. But when you activate the silent mechanism, the strings are silenced and a built-in tone generator plays a digitally recorded Yamaha Grand through the headphones supplied. QUALITY counts SUPPORT your local eateries

By San Lorenzo’s Ghigo Berni

L

ondon appears to be divided into three broad tiers of diners. At the metropolitan end, we have droves of eager young people spending disposable income in fashionably affordable eateries in and around Soho. Equally, there are droves of affluent people filling many fashionably expensive places, as they always have done. At the suburban end, the fairly affluent middle classes are choosing to eat out more often. The choices available are without precedent and food has become relatively inexpensive because every neighbourhood restaurant is offering a deal of some description. Hence people graze from place to place for variety and they commit very little in terms of expenditure by aggressively limiting their consumption. Groups often share starters, drink little or no wine, and order tap water. Yet real quality venues are few and they are being treated almost as franchises. The effect on successful franchises is not so hard because, by the very nature of their streamlined

operations, they benet from economies of scale not possible in private establishments. At San Lorenzo, for example, just about everything, from bread to cantucci, is hand-made on site. We prepare all our sauces and cuts, and we cook all and any dishes to order. There is no sous-vide, no boil-in-the-bag, and no microwave cooking. It’s a dying art in the suburbs, but in Soho it’s a standard which deservedly garners a lot more appreciation. As a restaurateur of some experience, I would urge locals to support their home grown eateries with a little more consideration. There are some excellent proponents of genuine quality like Mai Thai, Cah Chi, and Hashi (some of my personal favourites) which depend upon locals for survival. By merely ordering ‘specials’ and drinking tap water, diners are simply not supporting worthy venues. With VAT at 20% and prot margins severely constrained, such restaurants face precarious times as they are forced to compete with cheaper quality establishments. People need to appreciate more fully the

The Berni family circa 1968

costs and the amount of labour required to produce outstanding quality, otherwise Wimbledon will be further impoverished by insidious mediocrity. contact details 38 Wimbledon Hill Road 020 8946 8463 www.sanlorenzo.com twitter: @fuoriporta

Return to the root of life, for more energy, health and inspiration By Alessandro Ferullo, local Chi Gong teacher

A

lessandro Ferullo expands on the art of Chi Gong, connecting with the Universal energy (CHI), beneting our health and quality of life. Can you explain more about what you mean by the root of life? From the Chi Gong point of view, we become ill when we lose the connection with our original state of being, or the source of our real life force – Chi. By getting in touch with the Chi our life is nourished like a plant being watered and nurtured from the root. By connecting with the source, it helps to sustain and restore a vibrant and healthy state.

How do you believe the practice can inspire us more in our lives? When we connect with our true nature on a deeper level, our energy becomes more centered and we re-discover a mental clarity we may have lost over time. We then tend to connect

better with other people and cope better with life’s difculties. Monday Evening Classes (ongoing) in 2012: 7.30–8.30pm (drop-in classes) Wimbledon Village Club Hall, corner Ridgway and Lingeld Road Alessandro Ferullo: 07747 113305 alessandro@flowinghealth.co.uk www.chineseheritage.co.uk

How can we increase our energy levels? Often in daily life our energy can be in a scattered state and as a result our health can suffer long term. Our body can become stiff and our sprit can lose much of its joy as we become older. An essential effect of the Chi Gong practice is to regain the lively quality of a child. Even if we start at a more advanced age, we can feel a youthful quality coming back to us. darlingmagazine.co.uk | april–may 2012

Parking Protest on Church Road The Wimbledon Village Business Association staged a protest recently about parking restrictions on Church Rd in Wimbledon Village. The Merton Council’s decision to stop parking before 10am and after 4pm, Monday to Saturday has upset the traders and business owners in the area as they feel it is adversely affecting their livelihood. The removal of parking bays, the increase in parking tariffs and the cutting of the 20 minutes of free parking to 10 minutes has also been a source of great concern, especially for the retail trade in the Village. Retailers needs local people to support them to retain that village atmosphere and feel. So more footfall means more independent stores and a more interesting place for all. www.wimbledon-village.com

The Olympics Are you infringing on intellectual property rights?

What is all the fuss about? The businessmen and women in London will naturally wish to maximise the opportunities hosting the world’s largest sporting event brings but those wishing to try to proď€ t from the Olympics by unauthorised use of its intellectual property rights, beware!

What is being protected? The Olympic brand is after all extremely well known and for the

32

Olympics to raise the huge sums necessary to stage the event it is essential that the advertising and sponsorship rights associated with the Olympics and purchased by businesses are protected. If two competing businesses both claim association with the Olympics but only one has paid to do so it is easy to see why the business that paid would be somewhat miffed and wonder where the protection was for his investment.

april–may 2012 | darlingmagazine.co.uk

Who is involved? The answer is that this protection is provided by the London 2012 Organising Committee of the Games (LOCOG) and nearly all Olympic logos and phrases are registered as trademarks, most of the designs relating to the Games will be protected by registered design right and the right to bring an action for passing off, copyright infringement and trade description legislation lurk in the background.

Authorised and regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (490290) Authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority

Hart Brown are holding a series of free inheritance tax planning seminars in April and May. For more information contact marketing@hartbrown.co.uk

What this means is that LOCOG have been given a wide range of enforcement powers and any intellectual property infringements may lead to a criminal conviction, civil claims with injunctions, account of prots and delivery up of infringing goods.

When might I infringe? There is legislation from 1995 which provides robust protection for the unauthorised use of the word ‘Olympic’. A further Act in 2006 created a list of Games’ expressions which are not permitted to be used without authorisation. The words are contained in two groups; the rst group contains words such as ‘games’, ‘two thousand and twelve’, and ‘twenty twelve’. Use of these words, when combined with words in the second group may result in an infringement of Olympic Intellectual Property. The second group contains many words in common use such as ‘gold’, ‘silver’, ‘bronze’, ‘London’, ‘sponsor’ and ‘summer’.

What happens if I infringe by mistake? There are defences available in relation to the use of Olympic Intellectual Property although these are limited and reflect the

intended strict approach. For example: 1. You may use in a context which is not likely to suggest an association between a person, product or service and the Games. For example, an advertisement for an original Olympian marble statue in the classified section of a local newspaper. 2. An honest statement will generally benet from a defence provided it is true and accurate, cannot be considered to be misleading or cause confusion and is relevant in the context it is used. For example, an advertisement for a hotel with an Olympic sized swimming pool is likely to be permitted. 3. Newspapers, magazines, radio and television programmes can all publish or broadcast a report or information about the Games without infringing any Olympic rights. However, it is important to note that this exception does not apply to businesses which produce newsletters, client bulletins and other marketing material. 4. Use of names, design rights and other rights which have been made continuously before 1995. For example, a

business trading under the name ‘Olympic Plumbing Services’ would not be infringing any intellectual property rights if it had traded under this name prior to 1995. 5. Olympians are not prevented from endorsing products and the appearance of an Olympian in an advert is not considered to automatically create an association with the Games for infringement purposes. However, where an Olympian is used in an advert which also uses controlled expressions or Games-related imagery, an infringement is likely to be committed.

Be aware! It is therefore extremely important that businesses are aware of the controls in place to police intellectual property infringement for the London Olympics and there is no doubt that LOCOG will not hesitate to take action against infringers. If you are in any doubt as to Olympic Intellectual Property Rights, give Hart Brown a call. For more information, contact James Lamont: 01483 887766 commercial@hartbrown.co.uk www.hartbrown.co.uk

Time for change? by Jason Coetzee

I

often get asked how long it should take to build an extension or loft. Obviously each project is different and the time it takes depends on many factors, but here is a general guide to see what one could potentially achieve: The transformation you have always wanted in just two to three weeks:

Bathrooms and Wet Rooms

New driveway or patio

Redecorate

Install a new kitchen

In six to twelve weeks: •

Loft conversion

Extensions

Refurbish and remodel

Six months or more: •

Basements

Major building works

Rhino Construction can guide you through the entire process, from the design phase to the final finished product, turning your dream into reality. With years of experience in the trade, you can be assured of quality workmanship and a professional approach to every aspect of the project, bringing each project in on time and within budget.

‘I’m really happy with my extension and am recommending Rhino Construction to all my friends.’

Buy-to-Let – the perfect storm for investors Whilst it is fair to say that there has been a general reluctance amongst lenders to be as generous as they once were with domestic mortgages, there is a quiet competition going on between the lending institutions for buy-to-let mortgages. Some surprising statistics are coming out of this sector; the number of buy to let products available at the end of last year was approximately double the amount at the end of the previous year (source Mortgages for Business). At the time of writing there are currently 21 products on the market which offer Loan to Value mortgages of 80% which is a rare commodity in the domestic market.

end of last year investors were seeing yields of 6.1 per cent on so-called ‘vanilla’ buy-to-let, semicommercial yields of 7.8 per cent, and for complex investments with multiple tenants, yields were pushing 9.9 per cent. All this of course without any capital appreciation that may occur over a number of years.

Kate Griffiths Business Development Director

The buy-to-let sector of course would not be anywhere near as buoyant without a decent return for Landlords. Research suggests at the

London continues to outperform the rest of the country in terms of its rentals and capital values not least of all because it is seem as a relatively safe haven for overseas investors in the tempestuous storms of the Eurozone. Let us not also forget the Olympics as well which will put a brief but additional strain on an already oversubscribed rental market which will only please the more commercial landlords. Good professional advice through a regulated agent remains key and anyone of the Jackson-Stops & Staff offices will be able to assist and guide new or existing landlords through the buy-to-let maze.

The Downs, SW19 £2,100 pcm A recently refurbished two bedroom apartment in a modern development.

Thornton Road, SW19 £5,000 pcm A spacious and light four bedroom semi-detached period property.

So why the sudden interest against a general backdrop of caution in the mortgage market? The continuing strong demand from tenants for private rented accommodation without doubt underpins the whole sector. Low interest rates certainly help and in certain areas of the country depressed property values provide the icing on the cake as far as investors are concerned.

DON’T PANIC! Wimbledon couple come up with great new device

E

ver been out on the Broadway in Wimbledon at 3am? Bet your sons and daughters have. The Wimbledon Common has been a constant source of headache both to parents and police in the area, especially on a Friday night when many of our young people from the area and out of the area congregate there in groups, often drinking, and just generally ‘hanging out’. Sometimes things can get out of hand. Wouldn’t we feel better if we knew our youngsters had some extra help or protection? Local couple Elizabeth and Mikkel Dissing founded PanicGuard when a friend of theirs found themselves in a vulnerable situation one night. PanicGuard is a personal safety app for iPhone and Android phones, and is the world’s first mobile application to be awarded with the official police accreditation (Secured by Design). It enables your phone to act as an advanced personal alarm device, alerting anyone around you to the danger you are in, instantly letting your emergency contacts (friends or family of your choosing) know exactly where you are and what is happening to you. PanicGuard tracks you in real-time, gathers video evidence and uploads it in real time to your emergency contacts, helping them to accurately identify and locate your attacker. The emergency contacts can then, if the situation requires it, call the police with an accurate description of you, your location and time of the attack. PanicGuard service costs £3.99 on a monthly subscription, which gives users full access to all services such as real-time tracking, real time video and unlimited usage.

Ruff Clubs are the Answer

STARSTRUCK IN WIMBLEDON Wimbledon Bridge Club raises over £26,000 for charity in pro-am event. Nick Sandqvist reports: On Feb 23rd, WBC held its annual charity event, ‘Night of the Stars’. The star-studded eld was a ‘who’s who’ of the exciting card game, and even included multiple world champion Fulvio Fantoni, who had come from Monaco at his own expense to take part. Regular players from the club and greater London could bid for their favourite star in an auction run by Paul Mendelson, and then enjoy a splendid evening, playing with the partner of their dreams while sourcing the excellent buffet which was sponsored by Robert Holmes & Company. The addictive game, as well as being social, has a large following of very competitive players too, and many of the stars are professional players. Says WBC chairman, Terry Hewett, ‘It was a remarkable night, a night of generosity, goodwill and good fun.’ Through the tireless work of Terry, manager Marietta Andree, and assistant manager Janet Cahm’s, and the incredible generosity of Club members, friends and a number of local businesses, over £26,000 was raised for four charities. This will help to change many thousands of lives for the better. www.wimbledonbridgeclub.co.uk

UK Bridge Guru Paul Mendelson explains why With a mild winter now being England’s climate for most of the year, the card rooms of many a golf and tennis club are full of those seeking a dry refuge!

N E S W - NB 1S NB 2D NB 2S NB 3S NB 4S The drinks had arrived a few minutes earlier so, perhaps, we can attribute South’s error to the rst flash of alcohol crossing his lips. North-South made their way unsteadily to 4S and West led Ah, was encouraged by East, and continued with Kh and a third round to East’s Qh. East switched to 10c and declarer won and quickly drew three rounds of trumps. Alas, this did not take into account that he held two losing clubs in hand and, when he realised this, he tried the diamond nesse which lost to East’s Kd, and South lost two more clubs as well and ended up a dismal three down. Declarer should realise that dummy’s diamonds are not that promising and that there is a much easier way to bring home his game contract. He wins East’s club switch with Ac and ruffs a club in dummy. He can return to hand by playing Ad and rufng a diamond before leading his last club and trumping that also. With the club ruffs achieved, trumps can be drawn and the game contract will be successful.

Bridge Stars L-R: Andrew Robson, Terry Hewett, Robert Holmes, Zia Mahmood and Fulvio Fantoni (World #1 bridge player)

Tender is the night By Kate Greenhalgh

eirdly obsessed with TV’s gorgeous, pouting Professor Brian Cox, OBE as I am, I ended up in a small shop off Baker St the other day, listening to a delightful man called Simon enthuse about the Celestron Nexstar 127SLT and its ability to magnify the globular clusters in Hercules. A persuasive credential, you’ll agree, and well worth the money. Several readers were kind enough, after the last issue of Darling, to send in messages of support about Nancy, my coffee machine, (currently in Deptford for reprogramming - if only

life were that simple) so may question my decision to take on a computerised telescope. Let’s call him, well, Simon. Obviously. Thanks to Simon (and Brian), my family can now, at the touch of a button, look at Jupiter AND its moons in voyeuristic close-up. Staring at Io from a suburban garden, as it bobs around a gas giant some 4 million miles away, we can marvel at the mind-blowing miracles of the universe, all operating on a scale so vast, my ‘I am a 48 year-old housewife who has forgotten to do the Ocado order and has not topped up the cat litter tray and whose roots need doing’

persona is put into intoxicating perspective. I am tinglingly and existentially trivial. For a while, and with a lack of maternal feeling bordering on the grotesque, I devoted my nights to Simon and flung chicken nuggets at my children to feed them, with defrosting instructions as a careless afterthought. In vain, I exhorted them (the children, not the nuggets) to come and look at the Orion Nebula instead of recorded episodes of Inbetweeners. It was an unsustainable conflict. I bet Ptolemy didn’t have these problems. But it turned out that Simon wasn’t that good on the Pleiades Open Cluster and the O-type main sequence stars. And, you know what, even when he’s in opposition, you get the feeling that Jupiter will always be a bit, well, distant. As the garden comes back to life, my enthusiastic thoughts turn instead to what flowers are at my feet, and what the seasonable month endows at the shop at the Wisley Horticultural Centre. I wonder if Brian has thought of doing a gardening show?
