Society’s Emphasis on Hair by Dorothy S. Flake,PhD

"S

o what if you're going bald—it's only hair!" Statements like that can make your blood boil when you first start losing your hair. Most people are cavalier about hair loss when they're not the ones losing it and are unsympathetic to the plight of the victims of hair loss, but when their hair starts falling out, HOUSTON, TX they'll be looking for miracle cures, too—you can be sure of it. Hair Loss isn't life threatening, but it can be an extreme threat to self esteem. Studies show that hair loss can lead to feelings of shame, depression, frustration, helplessness, and anger. It also can result in feelings of sexual inadequacy and loss of self-confidence. Today, hair is something of a status symbol. You can find thousands of products devoted to hair care from dermatologists, restorative salons, etc., which only emphasize the problem for those experiencing hair loss. Many men now have their hair styled at salons rather than just getting it cut at a local barber shop. Television gives the impression that a full head of luxurious hair is the norm, implying that those who are losing it are somehow abnormal. Hair is also used as a method of self expression, a way to say who you are. A "bad hair day" can ruin your week and a "no hair life" can derail your career, your love life, and self-esteem but so can anything, IF YOU LET IT. Before you can fix a problem, you have to realize you have a problem. Denial is your enemy, you can't fix what you can't admit. The good news is that there are solutions to hair loss, no matter where you are in the hair loss process. Women lose hair, but not in the same way as men do. However, severe hair loss can be even more devastating to women than it is to men. Hair loss may be a serious blow to a woman's self-esteem, in large part because of cultural norms, society concept of femininity and the expectations that a woman should have glossy, luxurious, well-kept hair. Magazines women read tell them just that. ■

WOMEN'S HAIR LOSS NUTRIENTS THAT MAY HELP YOUR HAIR

A

good source for information on natural medicines, lists B6, inositol, pantothenic acid (B-5), and niacin (B-3), as well as the mineral magnesium and sulfur, as being important for hair health. The web site www.holisticonline.com is a good source for information on natural medicines and emphasizes the importance of essential fatty acids (such as flaxseed oil), evening primrose oil, salmon oil, vitamin E, and vitamin C. It even suggests the addition of raw thymus gland herbs. I would not recommend the raw thymus gland herbs unless you are under a physicians or naturopath's care (and ideally seeing both who are talking with each other. The supplements (the website recommends) can be obtained through your diet. If you decide on supplements, be mindful of the recommended dosage amounts and do not exceed the recommended dosage unless directed by a physician. COUNT 'EM UP!! Read the labels on bottles of vitamins and minerals, and do the math! REMEMBER, some vitamins in excess can be TOXIC, and some may even cause hair loss. Go to Office of Dietary Supplement's Web site (http://ods.od.nih.gov), and look for fact sheets on particular supplements.

A HAIR LOSS DIET? The main thing about eating well and hair loss is that you don't want to do yo-yo dieting; having your weight go up and down. In other words, no rapidweight loss. Many women have suffered from bulimia or anorexia, as is common in our thinness-obsessed society. These extreme eating disorders can have an adverse effect on your hair, as they can deplete your body of many of the nutrients listed above. My nutritionist advises a commonsense diet with complex carbohydrates to keep your metabolism on a steady level, while avoiding high-sugar snacks. My nutritionist’s advice to me was that she did not think there is a dir ect c or r el a t i on bet we en h i gh sugar (intake) and hair loss: a good diet is really an effort to get women to think more careful about their diet and eat a more well-balanced diet. So really, THERE IS NO "HAIR LOSS DIET” per se. Know your body, talk to your doctor if you are overweight and ask to have a dietitian help work out a healthy, well balanced weight-loss plan---ONE WITH YOUR HAIR IN MIND!! REMEMBER, lots of anorexic and bulimic women do not lose their hair. Many people eat all the

wrong things and have a wonderful head of hair and somehow remain disease free. My theory is that those of us who are prone to HAIR LOSS must make every effort to be as optimally healthy as possible. It is my opinion that for us, our HAIR is our Achilles heel and the barometer for our overall health. So eat well, and exercise regularly. Being healthy is important for more than just our hair. While it may not help grow more hair, it probably will help us maintain what we have. Everybody knows that eating well is essential for a healthy heart, bones, and other key body systems, but you may not realize that a lack of protein, vitamins, and minerals can effect what grows out of the top of your head as well. Hair needs to be fed and fed well to keep growing and to stay put. A steady diet of junk food isn't healthy for your hair. Ladies, you may be able to allow or avoid hair loss caused by nutritional deficiencies and keep the hair you have looking healthy and at its best on your head. ■

hrough pregnancy a woman bears life which is a gift from God. The force of life is manifested through a new human being while the fetus is growing. Hormonal changes are taking place within your body. These changes affect the growth of your hair. The life force increases hair growth. In fact, some women experience tremendous amounts of hair growth and your texture may even begin to change. However, once your bundle of joy enters into the world, the body goes through trauma and shock that may cause the hair to shed, especially around the hairline. This is known as Telogen Effluvium. Not to worry, as this is only temporary. Your hair will grow back at a normal rate. What can be done? Protein treatments on the hair are recommended at the salon during pregnancy and at least one month after the delivery of the infant. There isn't any pill or medication that is definitely going to make your hair grow back faster. Healthy hair grows from the inside out. A proper diet, exercise, and daily supplements are advisable by the dermatologist.

Scalp and Hair Challenges PREGNANCY: HAIR TEXTURE MAY CHANGE By: Dr. Dorothy Flake, PhD

HELPFUL PREGNANCY HINTS 1. Massage a dime size amount of Shea Butter on the scalp and into the shedding areas. This will increase blood circulation and promote growth. 2. Be patient, which is something you already know about from your pregnancy. Instead of stressing, take Yoga or Tai Chi classes to help you relax and get your body back in shape. 3. Please do not panic or become anxious or stressed about any changes in your hair growth. RELAX. Your Hair is regenerating itself. OUT WITH THE OLD IN WITH THE NEW! Your Hair Professional should highly recommend staying away from any chemical service process if the hair is fragile. Consult with your Doctor. Everyone's opinion will be different. Although there aren't any studies on relaxers, only on coloring procedures, applying chemicals during pregnancy MAY BE HARMFUL to the fetus. The choice is ultimately yours. Semi permanent color enhancements are fine for grey coverage or adding hues of color while pregnant. Many women opt to braid their hair while pregnant, relax their hair less frequently, or simply cut their hair into a short, easy, maintenance-free style while pregnant. Whatever style you choose, you'll always look good. Just remember you're always glowing as you bring a new life force into this world. RECIPES FOR HAIR GROWTH: 1. Mix equal parts of lavender oil, rosemary oil, jojoba oil, jasmine oil and one part frankincense oil together in a bottle. 2. Shampoo, rinse then massage oil mixture into scalp. 3. Wrap head with large HOT towel for 15 minutes, then rinse. FEELS WONDERFUL! You can feel the blood circulation. 4. Rosemary should not be used on children under five, pregnant women or those with high blood pressure, diabetes or epilepsy. 5. Pregnant women should substitute Primrose oils for Rosemary.

HAIR AND SCALP CHALLENGES - #2 By Dr. Dorothy Flake

PSORIASIS

hick flakes appearing on the scalp accompanied by a great deal of itching is a sign of psoriasis. Psoriasis is seen frequently in people of color as compared to other diseases involving the scalp. Scratching traumatizes the skin, creating an over production of cells and causing the skin to flake. Causes of psoriasis may be environmental, genetics, stress and a compromised immune system. Your Dermatologist, referred to you by your stylist, will select the best treatment depending on the severity. Salicylic acid shampoo helps to break down and remove the flakes and steroids, along with

tar shampoos, help with the inflammation. Treatments that contain derivatives of vitamin D work as well as retinoid creams and gels. In severe cases treatment options include injections of steroids or oral medication. Ultraviolet light therapy treatments are frequently used in hair restoration salons.

ECZEMA Eczema is another condition that should be diagnosed by your doctor. It is most often found in families that include one or more persons with allergies, asthma, orhay fever, but not exclusively. You may experience hair loss, but it is not permanent and usually treated with steroid shampoos, tar shampoos, lotions, and gels. Light oils like canola and hazelnut oils used sparingly on the scalp are essential preparations recommended for psoriasis and eczema. Meditation, exercise, a healthy scalp, a nutritious diet, hair care, and proper maintenance are the key ingredients to maintaining healthy hair for those with eczema. Dr. Flake recommends maintaining a good balance of moisture on the scalp by using a light moisture cream or lotion. AT HOME RECOMMENDATIONS: * Tee Tree Shampoos and Tee Tree oils, which lift flakes and calm the inflammation. * Nizoral Shampoo * Tar Based Shampoos Be Blessed and Encouraged, WOMEN'S HAIR RESTORATION Dr. Dorothy Flake, PhD Salon in the Park/Willowbrook 17776 Tomball Parkway, Suite 106 Houston, TX 77064 Bus: 281-517-6145 FAX: 281-445-1058

“SCALP AND HAIR CHALLENGES” By DOROTHY S. FLAKE, PhD.

“Stress management is a positive technique for controlling and preventing stress, which in turn will reduce hair loss.”

lopecia is the general term for hair loss. One of the most common forms of alopecia seen by hairstylists is alopecia areata. It may appear as a dime, nickel, or quarter- sized areas on the scalp where the skin is smooth and shiny and no other hair is present. The condition is usually spotted by your stylist, who may suggest you see a dermatologist. It may develop rather suddenly and is caused by a minor defect in the immune system. Medical treatment by your dermatologist often involves use of corticosteroids. This type of alopecia can be associated with thyroid disease and diabetes, but is most often due to severe stress. Alopecia seborrheic is hair loss caused by severe cases of seborrhea dermatitis. Once the yeast is under control, your hair will begin to grow back normally. Traction alopecia occurs when there is trauma to the hair follicle, causing thinning along the sides of the temples. This is the most common form of alopecia seen by the hairstylists. However, I have found that if traction alopecia is caught early and the follicle has not yet been destroyed (as diagnosed by a dermatologist), applying and massaging shea butter to the area three to four times a week for one month will result in some hair growth. I firmly recommend that you ask your stylist not to braid your hair very tightly. If the stylist does not comply, then STOP going to that stylist. Yes, I said STOP!! It's not worth it and is unacceptable. Stress management is a positive technique for controlling and preventing stress, which in turn will reduce hair loss. I SUGGEST combining a three-part

stress management technique that is physically, mentally and spiritually based. PHYSICALLY Fifteen minutes of aerobics in the morning prompts the heart to generate a blood flow that circulates to the brain and scalp, which feeds the follicles and promotes hair growth. MENTALLY Try this meditating and breathing technique: Breathe in, hold your breath and count 10 to 15 seconds, and then release while envisioning a beautiful and peaceful environment. This promotes a calm and tranquil disposition. SPIRITUALLY Praising the Father, giving thanks, and counting all your blessings, acknowledging that all is right with the world. Believing that the Creator has you in the palm of His hands reduces worry and internal stress, which in turn can control nervousness, including hair loss from pulling and tugging out your hair. Knowing and living by Faith promotes peace and order. I personally combine all three stress management techniques every morning, along with drinking an herbal protein drink, having green tea, taking my vitamins and supplements. For my spiritual reinforcement through the day, I read my bible, create and adhere to positive thinking, stay away from petty gossip and surround myself with positive people! Be Blessed, DOROTHY S. Make sure that you keep your wigs and prosthetics away from friction, so always use special tools to comb, brush and dry them. Special storing care is advised. Make sure you keep wigs and hair prosthetics on a mannequin’s head. Use a mannequin’s head preferably covered by or made of a skinlike material. If using a styro foam mannequin’s head, replace it monthly because bacteria will build up even when it looks clean. In cleaning, use a sea breeze type of astringent on the undersurface of the scalp of your wigs or prosthetics every time you remove it and store it. You may experience flakiness or rashes if you are wearing a vacuum fit prosthetic that has no breathability. In this process, a resistant area of skin will be created by your body to adjust. Having a high perspiration level will reduce your best conditions for new growth. If you are an alopecia patient, consult your doctor. Always continue to nurture your best opportunity for new growth.

Also know that alopecia may develop if you continually wear wigs. Try other alternatives. Selecting a full-cranial prosthetic that is breathable allows growing hair to grow as long as it is a non-vacuum. The fit of a hair prosthetic is very important. Make sure it is custom cutting, fitting, styling and coloring. All of these are essentials in the creation process.■

" IMPORTANT FACTS ABOUT THINNING AND HAIR LOSS" By Dorothy Flake, PHD

Hair thinning and or loss is a major, unresolved problem for millions of people; 35 million men and 20 million women.

ue to the psychological ramifications and the cosmetic connotations of hair loss, millions of dollars are spent on treatments promising to minimize hair loss. Hair loss and thinning are common problems that can affect both males and females in all age groups.

FEMALES IN ALL AGE GROUPS. 2/3 of all men experience hair thinning/loss during their lifetime Hair thinning/loss is common in older women Hair loss is often caused by ANDROGENETIC ALOPICIA (Pattern Baldness)

*BUT CAN ALSO RESULT FROM: Scalp Condition, Product Misuse and Overprocessing, Emotional and Physical Stress, Poor Circulation, Numerous Medical Conditions

The problems of hair loss and thinning will only grow as the population ages and as the years of product misuse and stress continue to take its toll. Most of the focus for hair loss/thinning solutions have been pharmaceutical in nature. PATTERN BALDNESS “ANDROGENETIC ALOPECIA” Baldness is not inherited of itself; however, the predisposition Houston, TX to produce a hormone called DIHYDROTESTOSTERONE (DHT) is inherited. Excessive levels of DHT cause a thickening of the scalp around the hair follicle and deprives the follicle of oxygen-rich blood and nutrients. This condition “CHOKES” the hair root and leads to thinning and balding.

Too frequent or too harsh exfoliation can leave your skin dry and irritated, so tailor your exfoliation based on how your skin looks and feels. air loss usually begins several weeks after the first or second chemotherapy treatment, but this varies from each individual. The child's hair may begin thinning gradually before falling out in larger quantities. Once the parent and child know that hair loss is expected, start planning ahead. Take a picture of his or her hair as it is usually worn, if child wants a wig, the stylist will have a guide for shaping or cutting wig. Keep a snippet of your child's hair to help match texture, color, and get his or her hair cut short. Once the hair is cut short, he or she may want to cover the hair after it begins to fall out, (hats or scarves), Parents should take the time needed to make this process relaxing and enjoyable. It is very important to most children to look good and feel better about themselves. If the child wants to wear a wig, first get a "prescription" from your physician for insurance purposes. Many health insurance companies cover the cost of wigs if prescribed by a physician. Select a hair or wig salon that speHOUSTON, TX cialize in styling wigs for kids, because wigs usually need some styling, trimming and adjustments by hair professionals. If your insurance does not cover or lack of insurance for a wig ("hair prosthesis" in insurance language), some organizations supply wigs at low or no cost. Your local American Cancer Society may be able to assist in obtaining a free wig. Your hospital social worker usually can help to find children who have been through the hair loss experience, and learn what worked and did not work for the child. In closing, parents encourage YOUR CHILD to experiment with different kinds of hats or scarves and have fun with this process and remind your child that once the treatment ends THE HAIR WILL COME BACK!! â–

at-home maintenance is very important. Exfoliation should be done gently with the right product to easily lift off the makeup residue. Cleaning pores properly is the key to striking balance. This will ensure that you do not block growth because of undue clogging or prevent growth because of undue scratching. The last thing for you to remember is NOT to scratch your scalp. Scratching could further damage hair follicles at the root or the roots themselves. Always remember, when applying camouflage makeup, cover only the empty or emptier parts of the scalp. Be Blessed,

he way to understand how to use camouflage makeup to hide hair loss and thinning is to first acknowledge that the skin on your face is very different from the skin that covers your scalp. The makeup for scalp coverage has to be designed so the skin on the scalp can absorb it. Scalp skin is harder to get through than facial skin. Here are a few examples of camouflage options on the market today: ALOPECIA MASKING LOTION: Dab on with applicators for two minutes. Tinted cream is applied to thinning and open areas of the scalp. HAIR BUILDING FIBERS: Shake on for 30 seconds. A tinted spray temporarily bonds appropriately tinted fibers to your thinning hair to create density. TOPICAL SHADING with Pressed Powder: Dab on with applicator, two minutes or more. Tinted powder helps fill in where scalp is blank and swells hair strands for fullness. TEXTURIZING SPRAY THICKNER: Spray on for 30 seconds. Tinted spray covers bald spots and bonds fibers to your hair to create density and color throughout. It is important to exfoliate the scalp once a week. This tip for
