IT’S FUN, FOOD & FESTIVAL TIME!

R

emember when there were no video games and electronics in your hands at all times? If you were sitting around the house your parents would say “get up and go outside and play! Well I am excited about this edition of Urban Trendsetters because we have created a calendar in our Arts and Entertainment section filled with events and opportunities that allow you to go get on up, shake your groove thing and boogie down. OK so that was a few Black Music Month moments but this is festival, fairs and expo season and this issue is loaded with fun stuff to do on page 26-29. Speaking of Black Music Month, you don’t necessarily have to be an old school hip-hop fan like myself to remember or at least be familiar with the song The Message by Grand Master Flash and The Furious Five with their classic chorus “Don’t Push Me Cause I’m Close to the Edge, I’m trying not to lose my head”. Back in those days when in my opinion, hip hop music had more meaningful messages, as black folks we felt we could relate to every word in the lyrics to that song. “It’s like a jungle sometimes it makes me wonder how I keep from going under”… Well friend, many of us or someone we know, are going under right now, and right before our very own eyes. Whether diagnosed or un-diagnosed many of us are suffering in silence about our mental health condition. In addition to Father’s Day June is also Men’s Health Month and we wanted to partner with organizations across the country and create awareness and impact on the mental health of our black men. As Black Americans it is no secret that we don’t talk about mental illness in our family, especially with our men. Stress is a leading factor among those suffering with mental illnesses and it is important for all to know that we are not alone. If most of us are honest with ourselves we have all been in a place

WELD thanks sponsors, members, volunteers and the Columbus community for the wonderful support of the Columbus Chapter 2017 Keynote Event! Margie Warrell, best-selling author and expert on courage, delivered an inspiring keynote message… Earned It. Own It.

By Sharon S. Gordon The 2017 WELD Keynote was a successful sell-out! Margie Warrell, best-selling author and expert on courage, delivered an inspiring keynote message on Earned It. Own It. COLC sponsor representative, Vinita Bahri-Mehra, Director, Kegler Brown Hill + Ritter, presented Huntington National Bank with the 2017 Central Ohio Leadership Census Award for its representation of women in top leadership (25% on their board and 4 women on their executive team) and for the company’s relentless focus on fostering an inclusive environment. Accepting the award on behalf of Huntington was Kelly Blackmon, SVP, HR Executive Business Partner. WELD board chair Marsha Conaway presented the 2017 Riveter Award to Elaine Roberts, President & CEO of the Columbus Regional Airport Authority. This award of distinction is given to a woman who is not just in a position of power and influence, not just a leader in her field, but a woman who has hit both of those benchmarks and invests the capital of that position back into uplifting women. The award is named for its connection to Rosie, a commonly used symbol of feminism and women’s economic power, but also because of the symbolism of the rivet itself. It represents a joining, expansion, exponential strength and permanence. First Lady Shannon Ginther, Chair of the Columbus Women’s Commission, shared the purpose of the commission and its key areas of focus to the audience. Colleen Marshall served as the Mistress of Ceremonies and is co-anchor of NBC4 . For more information about WELD log onto www.weldoh.org.

Black-Owned Construction Firm Awarded Contract to Replace Contaminated Water Lines in Flint, Michigan W.T. Stevens Construction, a Black-owned construction firm with about 25 employees, has been awarded a multi-million dollar service contract to replace more than 18,000 lead corroded pipes across the city of Flint, Michigan. The company is one of just four companies recently contracted under a court order to complete the project. The company was founded by a Black entrepreneur named W.T. Stevens back in the 1990's, but he died in 2002. His daughter, however, Rhonda Grayer, now serves as vice president. She works as a team with her husband, Jeff Grayer, who serves as a project manager for the company. Both are natives of Flint, Michigan, and Jeff is also a former NBA player who played for the Golden State Warriors and Milwaukee Bucks for more than 10 years. On getting the contract In a recent exclusive interview with TNJ.com, Jeff said, “This is home for me and my family and I wasn't going to sit back and do nothing as a person or as a businessman.” He added, “This is the biggest project our company has ever done and as a result of the water line contract our gross revenues have increased by about 70 percent.” He also says that they expect to have 6,000 water lines replaced in the city by the end of the year. “The target is to have all 18,000 lead corroded residential pipes replaced by December 2019,” he said. In a separate interview with TheHubFlint.com, Rhonda comments, “It is really exciting, and the most important part of it is the opportunity to employ people who may

not have had other opportunities."

instructed to continue to use bottled or filtered water until all the lead pipes have been replaced.

Why it really is a crisis The Flint water crisis began in 2014 when the Flint River became the drinking water source for people who lived in the city of Flint, Michigan. Due to insufficient water treatment, over 100,000 residents were potentially exposed to high levels of lead in the drinking water. A federal state of emergency was declared in January 2016 and Flint residents were instructed to use only bottled or filtered water for drinking, cooking, cleaning, and bathing. As of early 2017, the water quality had returned to acceptable levels; however, residents were

In March 2017, a $97 million settlement was approved by a federal magistrate mandating that thousands of pipes be replaced. The money will come from both state and federal funds, and the state of Michigan will also reserve an additional $10 million in case the job requires it. Not just about the money The Grayers are not just all about the money. They really want to help rebuild the community. Jeff comments, “This is a ma-

jor project that will ensure public safety and start rebuilding trust between the city and the community... something that has been missing awhile.” When asked about how her father would feel if he were still alive, Rhonda comments, "Now, it is definitely a family business. We all do something. I think he would be very, very proud of where we are at this time." For more details about their company, W.T. Stevens Construction, visit www.wtstevens.com

Congressional Caucus Brings Attention to Missing Black Girls By Sheryl from Diversity Inc "For far too long the voices of and issues facing Black women and girls have not been given the attention it deserves," Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman said. Political leaders, activists and law enforcement officials participated in a forum at the Library of Congress to find solutions for locating missing Black women and girls across the country. At Wednesday’s forum hosted by the Congressional Caucus on Black Women and Girls, panelists shared statistics and also sought to dismiss stereotypes about missing Black girls, such as that they are runaways involved in illegal activities. A total of 218,818 Black people were reported missing in 2016, according to FBI National Crime Information statistics. The Black and Missing Foundation statistics state that, in 2016, a total of 242,295 people of color were reported missing in the U.S. (out of 647,435 for all races). In 2014, the foundation reported that 64,000 Black women and girls were missing nationwide. “I feel like knocking on every attic, every garage to see where those girls are,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pe-

losi said, according to CNN. “Let’s be an example to the world that we can’t rest until these girls are found.” Derrica Wilson, co-founder of the Black and Missing Foundation, said Black teens missing in the Washington, D.C. area should be of both a local and national concern. “In the D.C. area, we all know of Relisha Rudd and we know that situation,

but that name didn’t become a national household name,” Wilson said, according to NBC News. “It needs to be national because a missing person whether it’s men, women or girls is not just right here, it’s a national issue.” The Metropolitan Police Department said there is no increase in missing cases, just a change in how cases are publicized. Last month, the Metropoli-

tan Police Department (MPD) in D.C. began using social media to bring public awareness to open missing persons cases. A continual series of tweets on Twitter showing the faces of missing teens, predominantly teens of color, began to alarm community members as well as social media users nationwide. D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser; Chanel Dickerson, commander of the police and leader of the Youth and Family Services Division; and acting D.C. Police Chief Peter Newsham said in a press conference in March that there is not an increase in missing person cases, only a change in the way cases are being publicized. And the number of unresolved missing persons cases is actually on the decline. MPD data shows that the number of missing juvenile cases in the D.C. area dropped from 2,433 in 2015 to 2,242 in 2016. Members of the Congressional Black Caucus called on the FBI to assist D.C. police in their investigation of missing children. On March 24, Bowser announced six new initiatives to address missing young people in the city. At the recent forum, panelists stressed that in order to find missing young women, Congress needs to provide resources Continued on Page 10

Woman Makes History After Becoming Australia’s First Ever Black Senator Canberra, Australia — Senator Lucy Gichuhi, a Kenyan-born lawyer, was warmly welcomed by colleagues when she recently became the first-ever person of black African descent in the Australian parliament. The seat she took had been left vacant for more than six months. She told reporters, “I am honored and humbled to be sworn in… I thank God, my husband and daughters, my father and all other friends, family and supporters for your encouragement, and sharing the vision we hold to unite Australia as one.” But her victory did not come without challenges. Those who were opposed to her unsuccessfully tried to challenge her eligibility because of her being born in Kenya. However, Gichuhi arrived in Australia with her husband and children back in 1999, and she legally became an Australian citizen in 2001. Regarding her political strategies, she told the Senate that she would not be merging with any parties, and would sit as an independent. As can be imagined, many people made negative and racist remarks after hearing about her victory. But there was

also some positivity. One Australian commented on social media, “Hopefully Lucy will bring a fresh perspective to our parliament. Goodness knows – there isn’t much else!” Another commented, “I don’t care what color you are. If you want to live here and be a part of my country and it’s freedoms, I am proud to have you aboard.”

Gichuhi, the eldest of ten children, grew up in the small village of Hiriga in Nyeri County in rural Kenya. After attending school everyday as a child, she worked to gather food from the garden or help milk the family’s cows. She went on to become a lawyer and now Senator. 

for better collaboration between government agencies including the police departments, health care institutions, courts and social services. At the end of the year, the Congressional Caucus on Black Women and Girls plans to release a report with a list of solutions. “For far too long the voices of and issues facing Black women and girls have not been given the attention it deserves,” Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-N.J.) said. “We look forward to working within the caucus and with our allies to push forward meaningful federal policy solutions that can translate into tangible action items on this issue and the wide range of challenges that meet at the intersection of being Black and being a woman or girl.” Coleman, along with Reps. Yvette D. Clarke (D-N.Y.) and Robin Kelly (D-Ill.), formed The Congressional Caucus on Black Women and Girls in 2016. The Caucus is now composed of more than 20 lawmakers. It is the first-ever caucus dedicated to removing barriers and disparities experienced by Black women. Coleman stated last year that the caucus will “speak up” for Black women, who deserve a voice in policy making that addresses systemic challenges. “From barriers in education, to a gender-based pay gap that widens with race, to disparities in both diagnoses and outcomes for many diseases, our society forces Black women to clear many hurdles faced by no other group, and asks them to do it with little assistance,” she said.

By James Clingman Guest Columnist Founder of Blackonomics and author of “Black Dollars Matter! Teach Your Dollars How to Make More Sense.” During their recent chit-chat with President Donald Trump, the Congressional Black Caucus members made it plain that they were not there simply for a photo-op or just to engage in meaningless conversation. So, they had a serious discussion about what Black folks need Trump to do in several areas, i.e. education, criminal justice, economics, workforce, rural America, environmental, and health. And, they put it in writing—a 125-page document titled, “We have a lot to lose – Solutions to advance Black families in the 21st Century.” According to news reports, Rep. Karen Bass, D-California, said the group raised “several areas of concern” but added that it was a “positive start.” According to Bass, among the concerns raised were Trump’s campaign rhetoric depicting African-American communities as “completely lawless,” his proposed budget cuts, mass incarceration, and the “rolling back” of the Voting Rights Act.

CBC Founding Member Bill Clay has never made it out of committee. The CBC walked right up to the reparations line in its “We have a lot to lose,” document; they made a great case for us, but they failed to cross that line by including reparations in their demands—or should I say, “suggestions” to President Trump. I stopped reading. Clarence McKee wrote in Newsmax, “Since they [CBC] got virtually nothing from Obama to deal with issues impact-

It has to be in the section titled, “Solutions for the African American Community,” which would bring to life the statement its members made in the document, namely, “The CBC has always been

committed to actions infused with ‘moral clarity’ and a desire to honestly and forthrightly represent the interests of our constituents, the AfricanAmerican community, and all Americans.” Yes, I cringed when I read, “and

The document stated, “Slaves literally built this country, including the United States Capitol and the White House. The uncompensated labor of millions of slaves established the wealth of White America, unjust profits that have never been repaid.” I got excited when I

I kept reading, only to find that each section thereafter, replete with Black problems followed by CBC solutions, said absolutely nothing about reparations. As a matter of fact there was not even an honorable mention of senior CBC member, John Conyers, who has served since 1965,for introducing H.R. 40 and bringi ng it up each year since 1989. He only asks for a commission to “discuss” the economic impact of 250 years of enslavement, but his resolution

SUCCESS INSTITUTE AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT How to Leverage Soft Skills

SUCCESS INSTITUTE AND WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT DL WALLACE The great Greek mathematician, Archimedes once said, “Give me a lever and I can move the earth.” While that statement may or may not be true, no one can argue that leverage plays a major role in business. Simply put, leverage is the art of using small object to move a much bigger object through proper positioning. Your soft skills training may not seem like a big deal now, but if leveraged properly, it can help you secure the position of your dreams. The better you leverage what you know, the more likely you are to excel in the business world. Almost every employer is searching for candidates with superior soft skills (leadership, problem solving, communication, time management, interpersonal, sales, etc.). Most prospective employees are in a mad dash to acquire soft skills. They’re attending conferences;

workshops and any other self-help initiatives that can help them achieve soft skills rapidly and inexpensively. Therefore, you must keep pace or run the risk of being left behind. Finding places to acquire soft skills in one thing – leveraging those skills you acquire is another story. Keep the following in mind:

Show What You Know – The main purpose for acquiring soft skills is to become more effective in the business world. Therefore, show your prospective employer (through concise explanation) how what you’ve learned has prepared you for the challenges of the job at hand. Explain how your skills in leadership, customer service, problem solving and team building will

help the company grow and positively impact others. Remember, don’t just get the skills – leverage them! For more information on how you can acquire soft skills training visit the Success Training Institute at www.simplysuccess.com

Get certified. Only engage in Soft Skills Training that offers you some type of certification. This provides additional leverage for you to use with prospective employers and gives you newly acquired skills added credibility. Add Soft Skills to Your Resume – Whether you’re applying for a job with a new company, a promotion or acceptance to a university, you MUST promote your soft skills. It looks good on your resume and sounds even better when you explain it in an interview.

EDUCATION TRENDS Success Training Institute Announces New Initiatives to Bridge Soft Skills Gap Amongst High School and College Students One of the exciting initiatives of Success Training Institute is their commitment to bridge the soft skills gap amongst high school and college students by offering drastically discounted (and in some cases, complimentary) training for college students, high schools and nonprofits serving underprivileged and disadvantaged areas. Research studies show that soft skills are the most sought after skill set by companies all over the world. However, they are also difficult and often expensive to acquire. Recognizing this trend, the Success Training Institute has developed an affordable soft skills training platform for colleges, public and charter schools. In some cases, schools can qualify for their student body to receive certifications in critical soft skills such as leadership, problem solving, time management, critical thinking, sales, and customer service, at no out-ofpocket expense to the schools. “Our soft skills platform was designed to help people from all walks of life become more employable, more marketable and more confident,” said DL Wallace, CEO of Success Training Institute. “However, we realize the scarcity of quality of soft skills training in underserved areas and we are committed to bridge the gap.” This initiative will help those that can’t afford quality soft skills training to acquire it at little or no cost. The plan is simple: •The Success Training Institute is seeking partnerships with non-profit organizations, schools, and associations with an emphasis on jobs programs.

Urban Trendsetters Media Call 614-267-3233

•Offering its training to the members of those communities and organizations for an extremely low cost. Together, the Success Training Institute and the partnering organization will track the success of the users of the soft skills training platform after certifications are earned. “As a former college president, I have always supported the need for soft skills amongst our student body,” said Felix A. Zamora, President Emeritus Mountain View College, DCCCD. “The Success Training Institute’s desire to partner with college and high school programs will be well received and partnerships such as these are long overdue.” Success Training Institute is leading the soft skills revolution by doing its part to increase awareness of the growing need for soft skills; which play the greatest role in securing employment in today’s workforce. Further, the online platform of the Success Training Institute makes learning convenient for those who don’t have the time or transportation to travel to a brick and mortar facility. All content can be delivered to users mobile phones and tablet and tests can be taken from their devices as well. Using its copyrighted, revolutionary SIPS Instructional Method©, every lesson is effectively taught in 8 minutes or less. CEO’s, College Presidents, Professors, and Entrepreneurs have endorsed the training platform. Success Training Institute is based in Addison, Texas. 15-Year Old Black Teen Entrepreneur Signs Licensing Deal With the NBA Young entrepreneur Moziah “Mo” Bridges was just 12 years old when he appeared on ABC's Shark Tank to promote his Memphis based company, Mo’s Bows, which manufactures handmade bow and neckties. Now 15, this young Black teen just signed a licensing deal with the NBA, giving him the rights to manufacture his products with the logos of NBA clubs. The NBA is excited about the launch of the Mo’s Bows NBA Collection because it increases their merchandise distribution to NBA fans. For Bridges, it means a seven-figure licensing deal and an important step in expanding his business. Mo comments, “Partnerships like this one will help me reach my goals of having a full clothing line by the time I graduate from college." Impressive from the start When Bridges and his mother appeared on Shark Tank in 2014, shark Daymond John immediately invested into Mo’s business. John saw in Bridges "a young man with a great vision and a mother with a strong business sense."

His instincts were right. Sales of Mo’s Bows at retailers like Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdales went through the roof. Bridges was named to TIME Magazine’s Most Influential Teen List in 2015. He was even invited to the White House by former President Barack Obama, and ESPN hired Bridges as a fashion correspondent for their NBA Draft telecast. This was quite an impressive start for Moziah Bridges. But he is far from done. In fact, he is just getting started! “My goal has always been to make Mo’s Bows a household name

Junior Achievement Reaches 100 Million Student Milestone Kids who join groups such as Junior Achievement are more likely to finish college and to start a business. Were you in Junior Achievement? Since its inception in 1919, Junior Achievement (JA) has helped inspire more than 100 million young people with its programs focused on entrepreneurship, financial literacy and work readiness. Now, JA is hoping to engage these former students, today’s JA Alumni, as volunteers to inspire and prepare today’s young people for success. JA programs have been demonstrated to have a great impact on students. According to a survey of more than 700 JA Alumni conducted by JA USA, former JA students are 30 percent more likely to have a four-year degree, earn about 20 percent more than the average American, and are 2? times more likely to be involved in starting a business. Additionally, about one in three (30 percent) JA Alumni say their involvement with Junior Achievement influenced their career decision and one in five (20 percent) work in the same career field as the JA volunteer they had in school. “Our alumni are an important constituent group for Junior Achievement,” said Jack E. Kosakowski, president and CEO of Junior Achievement USA. “With our 100th anniversary coming up in 2019, we invite anyone who had a JA program during his or her school years to reconnect with Junior Achievement. Our goal is to engage with alumni to help empower local students to own their economic success.” Given the overall gains demonstrated by JA Alumni when com-

pared to the general public, plus the benefits that many JA Alumni themselves attribute to their JA experience, what better way to engage today’s youth than through those who have already reaped its benefits? Did JA make a difference in your life? Do you want to reconnect with JA? You are encouraged to find out more by visiting www.JA.org/Alumni , or by contacting your local Junior Achievement office.

THE JOURNEY

IMpossible take the word for how it’s spelled

O

ver and over again, we dream big dreams and have enormous aspirations. Unfortunately, our dreams remain just that -

dreams. Life could be a great deal better, if only we learned to aspire higher. The most widespread difficulty in setting goals is the word impossible. For the most part people get hung up thinking I can't do this. It is too hard. It is unattainable. No one can do this. If everyone thought that, there would be no inventions, no innovations, and no breakthroughs in human achievement. Keep in mind that scientists were puzzled when they took a look at the unassuming bumblebee. In theory, they said, it was not possible for the bumblebee to fly. Fortunately for the bumblebee nobody has told it

so. As a result fly it does. If you limit yourself with self-doubt, and self-limiting assumptions, you will in no way be able to break past what you consider not possible. If you reach excessively far out into the sky without working towards your goal, you will find yourself clinging to the impossible dream. As you break up your dream into achievable steps, you will find out that the goals you thought were not possible become easier to bring about. And the not possible begins to seem possible after all. Thomas Edison once said that genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. Nothing could be truer. For one to achieve his or her dream there has to have been hard effort and discipline. But take note that that one percent has to be a think-big dream, and not

some easily accomplished one. Think big and work hard to accomplish those dreams. As you step up the ladder of progress, you will just about find out that the not possible has just become a little bit more possible. Think about it isn’t that how we spell Impossible? ♥

THE JOURNEY The William Brady Project Band - The Music behind the Mission for his community as a way to operate in his true purpose. The William Brady Project Band is a non-profit band/organization that uses music to increase mental health awareness. A Warren, Ohio native, Brady found himself at the losing end of a 20 year battle with drug addictions and living life in the fast lane. Having hit his “rock bottom” Brady realized that he needed to make a drastic change and that there was more to his life than what he was reflecting in his current circumstance. Brady had found himself like most individuals who struggle with addiction…alone. “I was at a place where my friends, family and it seemed everyone had turned their backs on me”- state Brady. William T. Brady, CEO The William Brady Charitable Organization and The William Bray Project Band The saying goes “music soothes the savage beast”, well in the case of William Brady Project Band, music is also a source of community outreach, engagement and awareness. As the founder and band leader for The William Brady Project Band, William Troy Brady has found a way to combine his love of music and his passion

After much soul searching Brady was determined to win back his life and decided that in order to make a true change he had to turn his life over to God and became a Born Again Christian. During this new journey Brady soon discovered his new life; a ministry that would allow him to reach out to others who were in need. He knew that he had to give back and make a difference in the lives of others. His specific mission was to care for those who had no one else, no one to turn to and nowhere to go.

That ministry became The William Brady Charitable Organization (WBCO), the method would be housing for the mentally ill and the music through which is flows is The William Brady Project Band. The WBCO is a supportive housing program that provides housing to individuals suffering from mental ill-

Since its inception in 2009 The WBCO has assisted over 4,000 people secure safe and affordable housing. Mr. Brady turned his love for music into a means of raising funds to sup-

port the ministry of The WBCO. This amazing band’s concept is to entertain free of charge and through their intermissions they take a moment to spread the word about mental illness. The audience who has had the pleasure of attending and listening to the bands blend of Jazz and R & B music roster have the opportunity to thank the band with their donations. It’s a win/win situation for all. The William Brady Project Band is always looking for organizations, events and partnerships to help them further their mission and movement of spreading the word about mental health awareness through music. The House of Wills, a former funeral home in Cleveland, Ohio, catches the attention of the Ghost Brothers. Built in the early 1900's as a Masonic temple, it was designed with elements to trap energy of those who came through it. It was later bought by a successful AfricanAmerican businessman, John Walter Wills, who turned it into a thriving funeral home business. After his death the building fell into disrepair and people claimed to see apparitions and experience a malevolent energy roaming the building. TRENDY PALATE Shrimp Coconut Curry in a Hurry

How To Have Fun, Dine Out And Stay In Shape A hearty salad topped with a tasty dressing can be a great option when dining out without throwing out your healthy living resolution.

If you’re craving a flavor-packed, proteinrich meal, but don’t have a ton of time to spend in the kitchen, this is a recipe you need to try. This bold yet delicate shrimp coconut curry dish can be on your plate – or impressing a date – in about 20 minutes (10 if you buy shrimp that is already peeled and deveined). Shrimp is cooked in fragrant coconut milk with curry powder, fresh ginger and lime, and a touch of honey. Dress it up with brown rice and chopped cilantro, and serve with a wedge of lime. If you like a little bit of heat, add a pinch of crushed red pepper or a finely chopped fresno chile. Shrimp cooks unbelievably fast, so keep an eye on your cooking temperature. For the best results, cook the shrimp with the onions and peppers over high heat for only 30 seconds. Add the coconut milk mixture to cool the pan and turn the burner to low. Shrimp will continue to cook after you’ve removed them from heat, so turn off your burner as soon as the shrimp becomes opaque, then serve immediately, or transfer to a serving dish. If you prefer your shrimp more well-done, leave them in the hot pan until ready to serve. Shrimp Coconut Curry Total Time: 21 min. Prep Time: 15 min. Cooking Time: 6 min. Yield: 1 serving Ingredients:

¼ cup canned coconut milk 1 tsp. fresh lime juice ½ tsp. raw honey (or agave syrup) (optional) ½ tsp. curry powder 1 thin slice fresh ginger, peeled, finely chopped ¼ tsp. finely chopped garlic 6 oz. raw medium shrimp, peeled, deveined ¼ tsp. ground black pepper 1 tsp. extra-virgin organic coconut oil ½ medium red bell pepper, chopped 6 fresh cilantro sprigs (for garnish; optional) Preparation: 1. Combine coconut milk, lime juice, honey, curry powder, ginger, and garlic in a small bowl; mix well. Set aside. 2. Season shrimp with pepper. 3. Heat oil in large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. 4. Add shrimp and bell pepper; cook, stirring frequently, for 30 seconds. 5. Add coconut milk mixture. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low; gently boil for 5 minutes, or until sauce is slightly thickened and shrimp is opaque and firm. 6. Garnish with cilantro if desired. Sagi’s Variation: Recipe can be made with 4 to 6 oz. skinless chicken breast. Make sure to cook chicken for a longer time (about 5 minutes or until it is not pink) before adding sauce. Multiple servings can be made and frozen in individual servings for future meals.

(NAPSI)—According to recent Nielsen reports, more than one in three Americans have resolved to stay fit in 2017. If you’re among them—or would like to be—you may be glad to learn that being healthy doesn’t mean you have to give up a lot of time or sacrifice the finer things in life such as dining out. What You Can Do 1. Get moving. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that most adults should spend about two and a half hours a week on some sort of physical activity—but that can include walking, dancing, biking, even gardening and housework. Also, you don’t have to do it all at once. A brisk 10- to 15-minute walk, two or three times a day, will do the trick. 2. Drink (water) to your health. Researchers at the University ofBirmingham in Britain suggest drinking about 16 ounces before each meal can help you feel fuller faster. 3. Keep your comfort. Healthy eating is all about balance. You can enjoy your favorite foods even if they are high in calories, fat or added sugars. The key is eating them only once in a while, and balancing them out with healthier foods and more physical activity. No need to give up your favorite comfort foods, just go for smaller portions, eaten less frequently. Or try a lower-calorie version. For example, if your macaroni and cheese recipe uses whole milk, butter and full-fat cheese, try remaking it

with nonfat milk, less butter, light cream cheese, fresh spinach and tomatoes. Just remember to not increase your portion size. 4. Slow down. If you eat too quickly, you may “clean your plate” instead of stopping when your hunger is satisfied. Savor each bite and pay attention to the company and conversation around you. Give your body time to digest a bit before going on to the next course. 5. Eat smart. As for dining out, simply making smart choices such as having fruit for dessert, getting an appetizer instead of a main dish or having a nice, filling salad can let you still have fun while out with family or friends without sabotaging your goals. Fortunately, one well known eating spot has upgraded and expanded one of its most popular dining options to include over 55 tasty items to choose from, including many new fresh and nutritious selections. From more than a dozen new fruits and vegetables, premium cheeses and crunchy toppings to eight house-made dressings, the Endless Garden Bar at Ruby Tuesday offers a variety of ways to build the best salad for you. With such kid-friendly options as mandarin oranges, grapes and diced apples, the Endless Garden Bar makes for great tyke-sized entrée option for the little ones, as well. Plus, so the entire family can enjoy eating out together, the company offers a Kids Eat Free program every Tuesday night. FINANCE & MONEY

Millennials Mature with Their Finances By DiversityInc Staff "Millennials are no longer the start-up generation; they’re settling down, buying homes, and having children," said Kent E. Allison, leader of PwC’s Employee Financial Education and Wellness practice. Financial stress, student loans and retirement plan withdrawals all present obstacles to employee financial well-being according to PwC US’s 2017 Employee Financial Wellness Survey. As financial wellness priorities continue to shift across the generational divide, this year’s survey data, collected during the first two weeks of the new Presidential administration, also reflects the country’s current climate of division, uncertainty and polarizing views. Aging Millennials facing similar challenges as their predecessors Set against a backdrop of high consumer confidence and a booming stock market, financial stress among Millennials decreased to 57 percent (down from 64 percent last year) and is more in line with the percentage of Gen X employees who are stressed about their finances (59 percent). Yet as they age, Millennials are confronting many of the challenges their Gen X co -workers face, including providing financial support for parents while also caring for their own children. “Despite a steady economic recovery and enhanced financial stability, 53 percent of employees are still stressed about their finances,” says Kent E. Allison, leader of PwC’s Employee Financial Education and Wellness practice. “Millennials are no longer the start-up generation; they’re

settling down, buying homes, and having children. Couple this with caring for an aging Baby Boomer population, and you’ll find that both Millennials and Gen X are feeling squeezed by their daily living expenses. As we learned from this year’s survey, financial wellness is not just about retirement or long term goals, it’s about living with manageable debt and enjoying the freedom that comes with sound financial choices.” Employee financial stress can be costly for companies Nearly one-third of all employees reports being distracted by personal financial issues while at work, with almost half of that group spending three hours or more each week handling personal finances at work. “Financial stressors are not only negatively impacting employees, but are significantly costing employers,” noted Allison. “Stressed employees are found to be less productive, take time off from work to deal with their finances and are more likely to cite health issues caused by financial stress.” In fact, PwC’s survey results find that employees who are stressed about their finances are nearly five times more likely to be distracted by their finances at work, twice as likely to spend three hours or more at work dealing with financial matters and three times more likely to spend five hours or more. They are also twice as likely to report missing work on account of their personal financial issues and more inclined to cite health issues caused by financial worries. Concerns over meeting monthly expenses impacts long-term financial goals Forty-one percent of Millennial employees find it difficult to meet their household expenses on time each month. Compounding this stress, 70 percent of Millennials

consistently carry balances on their credit cards and 45 percent use their credit cards for monthly expenses they could not afford otherwise. Student loans continue to be a significant obstacle, with 40 percent of Millennial employees carrying student loan debt, and 83 of them saying that their student loans have a moderate or significant impact on their ability to meet their other financial goals. Gen X is experiencing their own set of growing financial challenges. Fifty percent of Gen X respondents find it difficult to meet household expenses on time each month (up from 44 percent last year) and 30 percent provide financial support for their parents or in-laws. Gen X also experienced a rise in those who consistently carry credit card balances this year, 63 percent compared with 53 percent 2016, and this is a growing issue even among employees who earn more than $100,000 a year. With monthly expense stressors increasing for both Millennials and Gen X, concern over having enough for emergency expenses was again cited as a financial concern by half of all employees. Building on the fear of lacking robust savings, it appears that Millennial and Gen X employees are turning to their retirement savings as an additional source of money to cover everyday expenses, with more employees from both generations withdrawing money from their retirement plans than we’ve seen in prior years. Nearly one in three of all employees has already withdrawn money held in retirement plans to pay for expenses other than retirement and 44 percent think it’s likely they’ll need to do so in the future. One oftcited reason for withdrawing from a retirement plan, buying a home, is actually one of the least cited reasons by employees. Instead, the majority of employees who plan to withdraw money from their retirement plans need it for unexpected ex-

penses (51 percent Millennials, 57 percent Gen X and 53 percent Baby Boomers) and paying medical bills (22 percent Millennials, 18 percent Gen X and 24 percent Baby Boomers). “The fact that employees are looking at their retirement savings as an emergency fund signals they could use some additional support from a financial management perspective,” says Allison. “If shortterm unexpected expenses drive the most financial stress, companies should consider offering alternative savings programs that can be used for this purpose.” A mixed view of their retirement future Despite 75 percent of all employees currently saving for retirement and 44 percent saying they are saving more for retirement than last year, many employees (40 percent) have saved less than $50,000 for retirement. While common sense would imply this number was influenced by millennials who have had less time to save, a surprising 30 percent of Baby Boomers have saved less than $50,000 and 72 percent of Boomers have saved $300,000 or less. With nearly half (48 percent) of all employees thinking Social Security benefits will either not be available or will be reduced when they retire, the majority of employees (57 percent) would consider a partial retirement (working a reduced schedule) if their employer offered one. “Employees may now believe retirement will be more of a transition than a predetermined age,” adds Allison. “As financial employee benefits continue to evolve, employers should consider building out additional resources that ensure their employees are prepared for their future regardless of their salary, gender or age.”

TECH TRENDS Be Aware Of Cyber Threats When Booking Online Travel Your family can set out on your next vacation trip with more confidence if you heed a few safety and security suggestions NAPSI)—The Bureau of Transportation Statistics shows that mid- to end of summer is a busy travel time for many Americans, increasing business for vacation rental marketplaces like Airbnb, HomeAway (VRBO) and others. Traveling can be fun but it often comes with unwanted frustrations like high hotel expenses, the top headache for many travelers, according to a survey by the American Automobile Association (AAA). Keeping travel lodging costs low is one reason why sites like Airbnb and HomeAway are popular. Airbnb alone boasted 17 million summer travelers last year, according to the company’s 2015 Summer Travel Report. The booking giant now spans 191 countries and 34,000 cities across the globe. Airbnb estimates it has nearly 50 million customers renting and leasing property. Online platforms like these may put customers at risk of identity theft. Dan Konzen, campus college chair for the University of Phoenix College of Information Systems & Technology, says there are a few concerns that travelers should be aware of. “Booking travel online carries the same risks as any other online transaction, making personal and credit card information accessible to hackers,” Konzen said. “Overall, it is safe, but people should take precautions,

REAL ESTATE TRENDS

Maximize Your Basement’s Potential (NAPS)—With house prices on the rise, finishing a basement is the latest trend toward building even more equity in the home. A finished basement can offer a little extra room to give a growing family space to breathe, and with so many uses, a renovated basement may be the exact solution to what your home is missing. It can provide additional storage space, a soundproofed media room, craft room, guest room or income suite. The possibilities are practically endless. Here are some tips on how to give your basement a 180-degree makeover: Waterproof it. Check the interior foundation and floors to make sure there are no existing moisture issues, water damage or mold problems. Address any primary moisture issues before finishing the space. Examine grading to ensure water runs away from your foundation. Soundproof it. Installing acoustic insulation can provide an excellent excuse for cranking up the subwoofer, hosting a get-together or letting the kids run wild. Soundproofing can be the ultimate solution to maximize your basement’s peace, quiet and privacy.

Industry experts suggest using Roxul Safe ’n’ Sound, which effectively absorbs sound and is easy to work with. Add or replace flooring. Installing a new floor can improve the overall comfort level and look of your basement. Vinyl, laminate, ceramic tile and engineered hardwood are great options. Say no to carpet, which can harbor mold and allergens, particularly in the basement, and don’t forget to lay a subfloor. Add color. Transform the dull and boring space into an inviting oasis or a colorful playroom with a simple coat of paint. If your basement has low ceilings or limited natural light, choose lighter, warmer tones to brighten the space. To add some drama, consider adding depth and visual interest to your space with a different-colored accent wall. Accessorize it. Throw pillows, rugs, lighting and artwork are simple additions that can immediately enhance or change your basement’s look and feel. Recessed lights can modernize, while artwork and throw pillows can add a splash of color. Accessories are really an opportunity to make it your own and let your

personality shine through. They also provide an inexpensive way to keep your space looking fresh from year to year. HOME & STYLE TRENDS Increase The Value Of Your Home Quickly And Affordably With These Helpful Tips NAPSI)—When it comes to making

your home more attractive to potential buyers, one of the most important considerations is right at your feet: the floor. According to Realtors and home inspectors, quality flooring is more likely to increase your home’s value than the roof, windows, even room additions.

GET LISTED! List Your Business on the Urban Trendsetters Online Business Directory www.urbantrendsetters.com/business-directory

Fortunately, increasing the value of your home doesn’t have to mean replacing your floors. The upside of flooring is that it can be one of the most valuable commodities in a house and one of the least expensive to maintain and improve. A few simple techniques suggested by the experts at the World Floor Covering Association (WFCA), that cost virtually nothing but your time, may help extend the life of your flooring: Easy Care Advice on Hardwoods • For natural flooring such as wood, never use ammonia cleaners or oil soaps. They will dull the finish and performance of the floor. These products will also affect the ability to recoat your floor at a future point in time. • Since wood naturally expands when it’s wet, never wet mop or use excessive water to clean a hardwood floor. Large amounts of water can make the wood swell and may cause planks or strips to crack or splinter. Be sure to wipe up any spills on hardwood promptly. • You may not realize it, but carpet is the largest filter in a home. It filters soils, gases, allergens, spills and other pollutants. With this in mind, vacuum it regularly. • With vinyl floors, avoid using rubberbacked mats or rugs as they can damage and potentially discolor your floor. Instead, use mats or rugs made especially for vinyl floors. . When It’s Time for New Flooring Even the best care can’t keep your floors at their best forever. If you’re thinking of getting new flooring but are

concerned about the possible cost, consider these two ideas: 1. You don’t have to redo all your floors at once. Research shows that the first two areas of a home potential buyers look at are the kitchen and the bathroom. New floors there can make a powerful first impression.

2. It’s a common myth that flooring needs to be expensive to add value. The truth is that kitchens can be patterned with inexpensive floor tiles for a customized effect. Similarly, adding accent tiles in a bathroom can make it appear more finely detailed and attractive. If you do decide upgraded floors are in order, it’s very likely your kitchen and bathrooms do not take up a lot of square footage, which means relatively small investments in actual flooring product. That translates into big impact for very little cost. Expert Advice “Money invested to upgrade replacement floor covering, particularly in kitchens and baths, prior to reselling a house can be expected to return substantially more than 100 percent of the cost of renovation,” said Scott Humphrey, Chief Executive Officer, WFCA. “For example, if homeowners invest $5,000 to replace worn-out floor coverings and then list their home on the market, they should factor in an extra $10,000 to $15,000 on the selling price. We’ve seen this time and time again for homes of all values in markets across the country.” What’s more, for every $1,000 spent on upgraded flooring and financed into the mortgage, the buyer’s payment typically increases by less than $10 a month. The new floors can usually be written off during the first few years of the mortgage. For further facts and tips on caring for all types of fine flooring, go to www.WFCA.org

TRENDY TRAVEL Journey To The Music: Tips For Music Festival Travel There are many ways you can enhance your experience when you visit a music festival—and some of them may surprise you. (NAPS)—In the U.S. alone, there are now more than 800 music festivals annually, and according to Nielsen, 32 million people go to at least one of these festivals a year, traveling an average 903 miles to get there. If you’re one of these travelers, you know how rewarding and exhilarating it is to see some of your favorite bands beside a few hundred thousand fellow fans. If not, you may want to consider these cool benefits of festival travel.

A group experience. Music festivals typically serve up something for everyone, which makes it an excellent activity for a group trip. On top of the camaraderie, you’ll also be able to split costs. One way to save is to stay in a vacation rental home with a company such as Wyndham Vacation Rentals. With amenities that typically include multiple bedrooms, bathrooms, a kitchen, a washer/dryer and more, you’ll get way more than you would by camping out on the festival grounds.

Explore a new destination in a unique way. When you visit a destination during a festival, you’ll see a completely different side of the local culture than you would normally. At High Water Music Festival in Charleston, South Carolina, for example, they celebrate the best of Southern cuisine with local chefs collaborating on their favorite dishes for a unique, family-style dining experience. Not only do you get to see the best in Southern music, but you get to eat some of the best Southern cooking, too.

It’s not all about the music. Music festivals are not just about the music anymore. They are platforms for philanthropy, sustainability, fashion and healthy living. Coachella has been informing fashion trends and retailers over the past several years and always includes some type of sustainability and charitable component for guests to be a part of making a difference in the community.

So much music in one place. Though the price of tickets ranges dramatically, with dozens of bands playing, you’re more than likely to get your 2017 Essence Festival Line-up, money’s worth by seeing a few of your favorite artists. Festival goers also get to discover new and New Orleans, LA-June 29-July 3 upcoming artists they’d have never heard before. At Hangout Music Festival in Gulf Shores, Alabama, music ranges from folk to country to rap to pop, with more than 60 bands scheduled to play over the span of three days. Talk about an eclectic mix of music.

HOW TO SAVE ON THE NEXT FAMILY ROAD TRIP (NAPS)—U.S. travelers collectively spent $2.6 billion a day on trips in 2015, which equates to $30,033 a second, according to the U.S. Travel Association. Eating out, accommodations, rental cars, plane tickets and other expenses can make taking a vacation costly. But don’t let the thought of a potentially lofty price tag deter you. Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to save without sacrificing your travel experience dream. Here are some hints that may help: 1.Research free things to do for a memorable and affordable experience. Many nature parks are free to visit and make for a charming place for an outdoor family barbecue. During the summer there are often free concerts and other events to choose from. Museums and zoos also often offer a free admission day during the week. 2.Loyalty programs are a great way to put hard-earned points, dollars and miles to work. Most credit cards have a points program that help members earn cash back or use their points with partnering airlines and rental car companies. Travelers can also save

in, you can save a bundle. In fact, vacationers who stayed in a vacation home with a kitchen reported saving $898 a week. You can also pick up the family’s favorite snacks to bring along during day trips or for a late night refreshment. Not only will it cut costs, it will add convenience as well.

with hotel and lodging companies that offer free loyalty programs, such as Wyndham Rewards. Program members can earn points with a Wyndham hotel stay and redeem a free night for every 15,000 points accumulated. For those interested in a private accommodation stay, Wyndham Rewards recently added 17,000 vacation homes to the already expansive 7,500 hotels available for redemption.

3.Curbing impulse-buying habits is one way to cut down on extra spending. Create a budget for all those small purchases that add up and stick to it. Limit souvenirs and take pictures to remember the trip instead. 4.Food and meals can offer a big opportunity to save money. During the planning stage, look for an accommodation that has a kitchen. Even if you cook only a few meals

5.Coupons are another way to get experiences on the cheap. Websites such as Groupon and LivingSocial can help you save on some activities that many travelers normally don’t consider. These websites are also great for getting ideas on what to do. Plus, some attractions sell discounted passes to multiple activities, museums or theme parks. Make sure to check their websites before visiting. For more saving advice, head over to VacationDifferently.com. This travel resource offers great tips on family travel, ideas for vacation rental accommodations, and inspiration on how to travel a little bit differently.

Black-Owned Vacation Rental Web Sites Help Counter Discrimination Imagine trying to book a reservation at a Bed & Breakfast and being rejected, not because of credit issues, but because you are black. Sadly, this is happening often with online vacation booking sites. So two black entrepreneurs started their own vacation booking web sites that offer vacation booking services -- without discrimination. The two new web sites are Innclusive.com and Noirbnb.com. The sites are "creating a welcoming and safe platform for people from all walks of life" to enjoy a vacation home. Together,

Setting The Record Straight: Common Myths About Vacation Rentals Vacation rental homes are becoming increasingly popular. In fact, 89 percent of travelers who have never rented a vacation home before would consider it, according to a recent study. However, popular misconceptions prevent some people from doing so. Here are a few facts that can help. Myth #1: More space = a higher price tag. Many travelers assume vacation rentals are more expensive than traditional lodging. Think again: When you break down the price per night and per room compared to traditional accommodations, vacation rentals typically offer better value—plus, you get added living areas. Rental homes can also prove more cost effective when you average in all the convenient amenities, such as kitchens to save money on meals, or washers and dryers to cut down on baggage fees because you can pack less. Myth #2: I need to have a large group. Vacation rental homes come in all shapes and sizes, from studio units and condos in resort-style communities to larger, private homes with four or more bedrooms. Solo travelers, couples and families alike can enjoy rental homes for the convenience and can find the right-sized home for their needs.

By Staff Editor Latifah told The Huffington Post that she wants viewers to experience travel through the eyes of a celebrity. Each onehour episode follows a celebrity sharing their favorite hot spot from international destinations. Guest stars include Anthony Anderson (Barcelona), Jason Biggs and Jenny Mollen (Hong Kong), Mary-Louise Parker (Kenya), and Latifah herself (Rio de Janeiro). “The premise of it was something that Shakim came up with based on my life,” she said. “When I go on vacations I travel to different places around the world and oftentimes I’m with friends of mine who hip me to the cool places to be and things to go to. And for a lot of celebrities, this is our only little break to escape and kind of be normal without the spotlight.”

“And so, we want to share that place with the world and tell them about their secret spots, because we want to see it through their lens,” she added. She also wants the miniseries to inspire more black people to travel abroad. “Sometimes it takes the media a minute to catch up and actually care about what we’re doing,” she said. “But we know what we do, and we know we love to take a vacation and get away and just enjoy life. But I’m hoping the show will just give them more places to go and stretch their horizons even further. I love to be in a land where I don’t speak the native language, but people are people no matter where you go.” Latifah serves as executive producer on the series along with business partner Shakim Compere’s production company Flavor Unit. Check out an all-new episode of “The Best Place To Be” April 11 at 12 p.m. / 11 a.m. Central on the Travel Channel.

Myth #3: I have to stay for at least a week. Many vacation rental homes offer flexibility when it comes to length of stay. Travelers can often find rentals for weekend stays, especially during offpeak travel periods. Myth #4: You have to book far in advance. There is no set time frame for booking a rental home before your trip. While booking further in advance can give you a greater selection to choose from, there are often great last-minute deals in many popular vacation destinations for those who can’t plan as far ahead. Myth #5: If I need help, I’m on my own. This one depends on how you book your rental home. If you book directly with a homeowner through a listing site, you will have to work out any issues directly with the owner. However, if you book through a professional manager, such as Wyndham Vacation Rentals, there is someone available 24/7 to assist you and to serve as a liaison between you and the property owner.

Black-Owned Car Manufacturer to Take on Major International Brands They took the Kantanka car, and made it appeal to the masses. These cars are made for Ghana. We know how the roads are, and we built them to stand the roads.”

Black entrepreneurs have long had success in the car industry as dealers and suppliers, but few have made it far enough to become an actual car manufacturer. But Kwadwo Safo Jr, CEO of Kantanka Group, is defying the odds! Based in Accra, Ghana, his car company is already producing more than 100 vehicles each month. Dealing with a lack of trust Safo says that he spends a lot of time trying to convince others that his brand of cars are high quality. He told CNN, “The biggest challenge is people believing (and) having faith in the car. People think the doors will come off or the tires will blow off or something.” To prove that he's building high quality vehicles that are durable enough for the streets of Ghana, he recently allowed a local Ghanaian police department to test out the vehicles. Safo continued, “They rough handle cars a lot.

Another major problem As a small operator seeking to compete with established rivals, their manufacturing base in Accra can only produce about 100 cars monthly. Most competing car manufacturers can produce 100,000 or more a month. Even worse, Kantanka has high overhead and the cheapest of their three models costs around $20,000 - which is very expensive in a third world country. Not giving up But Safo is not very easily discouraged. "We've gotten this far because we believe in the possibilities," he says. "One day we will be all over the world." Safo's father, Kwadwo Safo, Sr, who is founder of the company and also a preacher and a musical enthusiast, says their mission is to empower black Africa through the application of appropriate technology and innovative science and to uplift the sunken image of the African continent. SPORTS TRENDS JOHN’S JOT:

TRANSITIONING FROM THE NBA TO NCAA IS NOT EASY By John “J.J.” Jurjevich

HayWood Media

(GU athletics photo) Georgetown’s

new baketball coach Patrick Ewing.

Patrick Ewing has replaced John Thompson III (JT3) as the men’s head basketball coach at Georgetown. Ewing played at Georgetown for four years under then head coach John Thompson, Jr., the father of JT3, before being taken by the New York Knicks in the 1985 NBA Draft. But after playing 12 years in the NBA, followed by 13 years as an NBA assistant coach, Ewing’s college coaching career begins uneasily. When recently asked by Dan Patrick, on his syndicated radio show, if he’d have a place for former George-town basketball and NBA star Allen Iverson on his staff, Ewing said he’s unsure, but that Iverson is welcomed. “I’m gonna use him every way I can,” Ewing said to Patrick. But for not having him officially on staff, that would violate NCAA article13.1.2, which says: All in-person, on -

and off- campus recruiting contacts with a prospective student-athlete or the prospective student-athlete’s relatives or legal guardians shall be made only by authorized institutional staff members. Such contact, as well as correspondence and telephone calls, by representatives of an institution’s athletics interests is prohibited except as otherwise permitted in this section. The only exception to this rule is that family members, friends and/or neighbors may assist in the recruiting of a prospective student-athlete. This rule is just one of a few things that makes transitioning from coaching in the pro ranks to coaching in the collegiate ranks very difficult. But we’ll soon see if Ewing should have stayed in his lane, the NBA.

NFL DOES RIGHT FOR CTE VICTIMS, OTHERS SHOULD FOLLOW By Oscar C. Woodall, Jr. - HayWood Media

Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a progressive degenerative disease found in folks who have had repeated blows to the head. A subtype of this is dementia pugilistic (DP), i.e. “punch-drunk,” as it was initially found in those with a history of boxing. CTE has been most commonly found in deceased athletes who had experienced repeated concussions or other brain trauma from participating in rodeo, football, stunt performing, bull riding, boxing, ice hockey, wrestling, rugby and other contact sports. Its presence in domestic violence victims is also being considered.

It can affect high school athletes, especially American football players, following just a few years of activity. It is a form of tauopathy. Mayo clinic.org researchers are trying to find a test for CTE that can be used when the patient is still alive. The NFL has put millions of dollars into researching and preventing concussions, the primary cause of CTE. Speaking at the conclusion of the 2012 NFL owners meetings, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell backed the recent assertion of NFL senior vice president Jeff Miller, who said at a congressional roundtable that there is “certainly” a connection between the brain disease and football. “The most important thing for us is to support the medicine and scientists who determine what those connections are,” said Goodell. “We think that the statements that have been made by Jeff Miller and others are consistent with our position over the years.” Stay tuned to see who follows suit.
