New Beginnings

S T2T

ometimes it is difficult to deal with change. Change is always coming. Whether you look forward to change or dread it, change is coming! Even when change deserves celebrating, it can bring some level of stress. Let’s face it, change is inevitable and a certainty in life. Some change comes invited, some really out of your control. Some of it is a matter of everyday living and some of it we choose to create. When dealing with change, it is important to face your feelings. Realize that you don’t have to always feel like a victim if the change you are going through is not controlled by you. Figure out when to accept or reject the change. One thing that has helped me over the years is the “Serenity Prayer.” It has helped keep me grounded and increases my faith in God. It is a powerful motivator and comforting prayer that many people from different spiritual beliefs use as a means to cope with change. Whether you’re changing grades in school, losing a job, getting a promotion, lost your best friend, girlfriend dumped you, had a new baby, got a divorce, lost your home, losing sight, hair graying, gaining weight, or winning your first marathon race….change is always coming. Maybe it’s easier said than done, but I’m striving to embrace change and possibly come to love it! If you are a trendsetter, you have first hand experience of what it takes to make a difference in your community. Don’t let the fear of change overpower you. Pray the “Serenity Prayer.” It may help you too! ■

Do You!!!

W

hy are we intimidated by others, and why do we allow others to validate who we are? The status of one’s career, the climb of their financial worth, the fame of their name, the height of their educational level, or the superiority of their job, are all reasons we may feel intimidated by others. Typecasts, along with the perception of how we view others, are all labels created in our minds and may lead us to feeling inferior. And the ones you are intimidated by are usually the ones that appear to have it together, but really don’t. Regardless of what others may think of us, what’s most important is what we think of ourselves, and how we live our own lives. So stand strong. Get out of the notion to be what you believe others think you should be. Believe in yourself and live your life based on your own morals and beliefs. Do not give others the key to your success. Remember, life is more than just money and power. Do you. And at the end of the day, you’ll be happier with who you are and not who others expect you to be!!! ■

“Don’t tell it like it is…tell it as it OUGHT to be.” --Rev. Jesse Jackson

H

e has been hailed as, “The Conscience of a Nation” and “The Great Unifier”…but in his humility, believes he is only doing his Godgiven duty to mankind because it is the right thing to do. Today, 40 years later, Rev. Jesse Jackson is still utilizing timeless values to drive the Rainbow P.U.S.H. Coalition (People United to Serve Humanity). While he reminds us that we are living in “changing times”…he urges us to remember that, There are timeless values, there are changeless values, in times of change, there are some values that are changeless, in times of change…It is the same with families, there are some changeless values, changeless values…in changing times. In other words, there are just some values that won’t change, which teach you how to live within a society that is slow to change. This means no compromising your dignity and right to equality, no matter who you are. Rev. Jackson shares, The most potent weapon, that a person has, is their mind and strong minds, break strong chains. For those of us that

grew up in a generation where the parent and the church taught us the primary information needed for life and not non-parenting entities, you were taught these values. Rev. Jackson insists that these lessons must still be passed down to our children and generations to come. 1) Teach them the power of a strong mind, through education. It’s so important. 2) Encourage them to have a strong and healthy body. So as not to be dependent, if they can help it. 3) Have the courage of their convictions, to see others as they are, and not as they would have them to be. 4) Be a legacy. All of these make for a well-rounded and productive citizen - one who has responsibility and accountability to a Higher Authority, society, and self. We are living in a time, when the anti-parenting points of view supersede the original parenting values, causing our nations, cultures, and children to feel the pain of being stagnant or stationary. Rev. Jackson remembers three examples in his lifetime that stood out that exemplified these values. The first came from a man, Billy Eckstine, who in the 1950’s had a clothing line and was doing very well during that time with it. He was

Cymia Telleria in Boarding Games By: Beverly Hill (Shelley)

have followed this young lady since she was nine years old. Her heritage is Black and Hispanic…she is Cymia Telleria! She is now almost sixteen and moving fast-forward in the music and film industries. She’s got serious game! Presently, she is involved in an upcoming television series titled, Boarding Games. The show is compared to 90210, Friends and Gossip Girls all mixed together! There are several major television networks showing interest. Cymia’s character is Ava Quinn (the ruthless snob) who is the walking fashion doll for the school. Dillington Moore Academy is the name of the school, and these are not your typical students. As personalities collide with greed and power, interesting things begin to happen. Friendships are tested, and alliances are formed. Cymia’s clique is called the “Social Bees.” They include Grace, Rachel, Caroline, Sydney and Claire. They are untouchables at the school and take no mess!! Hmm…I wonder whose side I will be on? Serena Telleria, Cymia’s mother, is the creator and executive producer of Boarding Games, and Tatiana Hong is the line and executive producer. Serena gave me the exclusive to attend the private photo shoot for the television series and the opportunity to interview her daughter. After speaking with Cymia concerning Boarding Games and her music, I was also afforded the pleasure of speaking with each cast member; I was even able to speak with the parents! Everyone involved interacted like a close-knit family. Cymia Telleria’s gift was recognized at six years old, when she played Betsy in the movie Roadhouse. She says, “That’s when my parents noticed my talents and began working really hard. That’s the reason I’m where I am today.” Her first performance was at Starbucks when she was ten. With a live band and her guitarist, Cymia would perform her single “Scream for Help” every weekend during their showcase. This was also her first studio song that was completed in an amazing six hours! Her decision to sing

14 YOUNG & TRENDY

came because of this first time studio experience! There have been many great experiences and opportunities for Cymia. While working with Cash Money, she dropped her first single, “Kid Nation.” With excitement she shares, “The video can be viewed on YouTube. It’s vibrant and colorful. Lots of kids can relate to it.” During the 2013 holiday season, “A Very Special Christmas” was released. She continues, “It’s about family, not material things, not being concerned about anything else. This Christmas song was for my Pajama Drive for Ronald McDonald House. I love kids and charities; I think they’re so amazing!” Cymia is very excited about her upcoming new single called “Looking Stupid.” She can’t speak concerning it because it’s a surprise, but she did tell me that it’s HOT!! Family is very important to Cymia, and her parents are very involved in her career. Her father, Javier, and mother, Serena, both make sure that her career does not interfere with school, and they also work together on her appearance. Cymia considers her dress to be modest and most appropriate for a young lady of her age. Her mom, Serena, has breast cancer. Cymia lovingly reveals, “I help mom a lot. She is really a strong woman…a very strong woman. My mom is my best friend; I tell her everything…I love her to death.” She concludes by adding, “My everyday motto is, ‘If you believe it you can achieve it.’ Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t. Everyone is good at something! See you on Boarding Games!” ■ https://twitter.com/cymia https://www.facebook.com/CymiaOfficial https://www.facebook.com/VipCinemaProductions http://www.vipcinemaproductions.com/projects/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwDuzwU2-rg

Purpose is defiantly making a statement with this single as they arrive on the scene of the emerging Christian Contemporary/ Hip Hop genre. GOODY Music Entertainment Group is ecstatic to introduce Purpose to the world. Their musical gifting and collaboration offers a twist of rap and spoken word, providing listeners with a unique and refreshing experience. The single project, “Victory” sets the tone for the upcoming album. Purpose has a story to share. They are young, and have a past that many can relate to; they are not ashamed to proclaim, despite it all, that they are walking in victory! The single is beautifully and poetically put together. The words are real, relevant, and restorative. “We were partners in the streets. Now we are using our gifts to glorify God and we are partners in ministry, on a mission to encourage others and purpose to glo-

We want them to know that they can overcome the challenges of this world and rise above their situations. Jesus paid the price for us to be victorious and have an abundant life,” says Tiahny. Purpose signed with GMEG in late 2013 and this is their first single debut. The group has been traveling and ministering throughout California. The label released a compilation CD as an introduction to their upcoming “Take Back” tour which will begin in the Fall of 2014. The full album is anticipated to be released in early 2015. pria N. Gallman is theFounder and Chief Executive Officer of the AG Caregiver Advocate Group. Gallman uses her years of experience, knowledge, and expertise to educate, coach, mentor, train, and motivate caregivers worldwide. At the tender age of 21, Gallman was a full-time sophomore attending Prince George’s Community College in Largo, Maryland, pursuing her Associates in Arts Degree in Graphic Design, and was a part-time associate at a retail clothing store in Washington DC. Ambitious, career driven, and independent, Gallman’s life took an unexpected turn for the worst when her mother’s cardiac catheterization was botched, resulting in a painful week in the intensive care unit (ICU) with a watermelon-sized hematoma extending from her back and resting on her leg nerves. It later resulted in her becoming physically impaired and relying solely on Apria for support. After years of persistent saving and determination to complete her Associate’s in Arts Degree, Gallman made the ultimate sacrifice to withdraw from college to accept the responsibility of becoming her mother’s full-time caregiver. In the midst of her mother’s recovery, Gallman endured endless hardships in seeking proper medical attention for her mother. Five days a week, 60 hours per week on 4 hours or less of sleep began to take a toll on her in all ways possible. For three long harsh years of her life Gallman was at her mother’s complete disposal leaving her only to shower/dress, cook, run errands, and transport her mother to

and from her doctor’s appointments with little time for herself. Gallman soon became discouraged during her mother’s healing process which led to depression, suicidal thoughts, financial hardships, spiritual and social withdrawal. Later in March 2012, she lost her job after being unable to determine her mother’s progress. Low in faith, discouraged with life, and concealing her frustration, Gallman contemplated on committing suicide. She had an honest conversation with God to restore her from this extreme turn of events. She regained her strength at her local church assembly, Koinonia Fellowship Ministries in Laurel, Maryland. A year later she was healed from depression and suicidal thoughts. She nurtured and motivated her mother to regain her independent mobility and progressed in her physical healing. As Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the AG Caregiver Advocate Group, she travels all over the United States to deliver solutions that caregivers embark upon which are centered on mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical health. Gallman passionately speaks with conviction and equips caregivers to become stronger, better, and healthier. She’s a dedicated compassionate volunteer at Washington Hospital Center in Washington DC, where she shares her experience to help cancer patients and their caregivers. Gallman found pearls in her pain throughout her extensive journey in becoming a caregiver. Now millions of people are being saved, enriched, and delivered by her inspiring message of perseverance, determination, and faith. Gallman is currently writing her first book that’s due to launch June 2014. ■

Spelman College Exceeds Fundraising Goal; Prepares for Next Era of Leadership $157.8 million - highest ever - raised for scholarships, academic initiatives and facilities

(BPRW)

S

pelman College today announced that it has exceeded its comprehensive fundraising campaign goal, generating $157.8 million. This is the largest amount raised in the history of the institution. The campaign attracted support for scholarships, academic initiatives, and campus renewal. A record-breaking 12,000, representing 71% of alumnae, made a gift to

the campaign. “When we launched the campaign, we were focused on strengthening the institution’s healthy foundation through increased scholarship support for students, strategic investment in our faculty and academic programs, and capital improvements on our campus. It is very gratifying to have met all of these objectives while exceeding our campaign goal,” says President Beverly Daniel Tatum. Over the course of the 10-year campaign, scholarship support for Spelman students has tripled, and opportunities for faculty research and development have expanded significantly. The Gordon-Zeto Center for International Education was created with a gift of $17 million, increasing opportunities for student and faculty travel, and providing financial aid for international students. Other highlights include the creation of a signature social justice fellows program, and funding to build a state-of-the-art wellness facility. “From campus expansion and significantly increased housing capacity to dramatic growth in annual alumnae support and a campuswide focus on wellness, Dr. Tatum has provided exemplary leadership,” says Rosalind Brewer, Chair of the Spelman College Board of Trustees. With the campaign now at an end, President Tatum has announced her intention to retire on June 30, 2015. “As the campaign closes and I prepare to enter a new decade in my life, it presents a natural time for transition. It is a great time to pass the baton to a new leader, and I am ready to return to my writing,” explains Dr. Tatum, a well-known author, who will turn age 60 this year. Board Chair Brewer acknowledges this bittersweet moment. “Dr. Tatum has been a true visionary. She and the entire campus community have demonstrated tremendous leadership and stewardship of the institution over the last 12 years. The entire board truly appreciates the significant strides made under this administration. Now it is time not to rest on our laurels, but to build on these accomplishments. As we look ahead, we take pride in the history of strong leadership that has distinguished Spelman College, and we intend to continue that tradition moving forward. It’s an exciting time.” ■

CHANGE: “Long Time Coming”

C

T2T

HANGE… It is something we chase yet reject, pray and cry out for, but deny it of its very essence when graced with its inevitable presence in our lives. My personal definition for Change is: “The transition from one person, place, or thing to another.” At one point I thought when a person fought against transition that they were only hurting themselves, but this is the farthest thing from the truth. Throughout my years I have witnessed individuals wrestle with their change and many fell shor t w he n oppor tuni ties were presented. Obstacles such as fear, low self-esteem, lack of knowledge and or a support system, greatly influence the outcome. I no longer believe in happenstances… just happiness. I honestly believe that happiness isn’t hard and though the road to get there may have its twists and turns, the journey is truly more precious than the destination itself. I’ve been blessed to meet and develop a strong partnership and friendship with a great man by the name of James Brown (www.JamesBrownSpeaks.com) James has a saying that “It is better to be prepared and have an opportunity than to have an opportunity and not be prepared.” Pretty wise quote, huh? Well it’s not just the saying that captured my attention but the boldness of the man who said it that captivated my heart. You did hear me say he was a great man right? Well let me share a few things that make him great. Mr. James Brown, while young and wrestling with several transitions in life, was left paralyzed from the neck down from what he describes as a “drug deal gone bad.” His testimony is best told by himself - in person, his video documentary, or one of his self-published books! Yes, this mighty man’s chariot of war is a customized wheel chair that he now relentlessly navigates toward his destiny. His change was forced upon him over 22 years ago, yet how he handled his near-death encounter and the extreme adversity that

20 EDUCATIONAL SPOTLIGHT

followed, only strengthened his character and integrity. After the ordeal, a few months of having his pity parties and some intense soul searching, James was forced to look back over his life, evaluate his present situation, and develop a plan for his seemingly somewhat limited and dim future. While it took some time to physically adjust, amazingly enough James’ mental recovery was accelerated. After researching and asking questions, James created his own Travel Agency which did quite well, but it didn’t satisfy his soul. So of course he desired more out of his life, the life he had been given an opportunity to keep with some noticeable adjustments. James couldn’t walk or drive, or even sit up by himself. He couldn’t eat, get up or go to bed, or even use the restroom or take a bath without someone to assist him. While many would have suffered and suffocated from such diverse changes, these are the same struggles which Transitioned Him to a Greater Position. He is currently endorsed by great authors such as Les Brown, appeared on numerous broadcasts such as TBN, as well as spoken to countless at-risk youth, and at school assemblies around the country. When one rejects the opporBennie Foster tunity to discipline their destiny through the characterbuilding hands of adversity and divine challenges in life, they not only cheat and limit themselves, but they also deny any and everyone who could have benefited from what I have learned to call their “Transition to a Greater Position.” Change – It’s been a long time coming!!! -Bennie SOS Foster ■

T2T

Girls and Some Shoes is a Georgia based charity outreach program servicing the homeless and impoverished citizens of the City of Atlanta and its surrounding communities. Founded by Sylvia Webb, the organization’s primary mission is the collection and distribution of new and gently worn shoes for men, women and children, provided by its many generous supporters. Through a vast network of partnerships and associations formed in the past 6 years, 40 Girls and Some Shoes has provided over 30,000 pairs of free shoes to these under-served groups since its inception. This has been accomplished through a number of shoe drives and an annual charity event which brings together leaders of the city, other organizations aimed at serving the homeless community, and individuals who want to do their part to support this great cause. Additionally, recognizing the impact of the economic downturn in our country, 40 Girls and Some Shoes stepped up its efforts to also meet the demands of the unemployed and underemployed, some of whom are at risk of becoming homeless themselves. Some of our community involvement includes various church, schools, homeless shelters and outreach organization donations, a shoe distribution in Renaissance Park, Vine City Community, Atlanta West End, Marietta Rainbow Housing Center and the Old 4th Ward where those in need received free shoes after making their own personal shoe selections. Donations were made to the victims of the 2009 flooding in Austell and Marietta, Georgia, Lourdes Orphanage in Haiti and to women and children in Ghana,West Africa. We are only able to continue to meet the needs of those we serve through the continued backing of those who believe we can eradicate this epidemic. 40 Girls and Some Shoes accepts donations from retailers and individuals and is always looking to expand our existing network. "Shoes do not educate, nor do they guarantee a home or employment, but they can provide an increase in esteem and protect the “soles” of those looking to take what may be that first

magine the mother of a special needs child. Imagine a man with stage IV prostate cancer. Imagine the daughter that has breast cancer and also provides care for her mother who has Alzheimer’s. Imagine the mom that needs medically trained after school care for her 12-year-old son who has cerebral palsy. Imagine the single dad of two adolescent children, who is also a caregiver to his wheelchair restricted father. These are the type of people who call on Caregivers 911, and we are there to provide resources to support their emotional and physical well-being. Caregivers 911, Inc is a Georgia based non-profit 501(c) 3 organization established to provide educational forums, respite care, awareness counseling, relief, and resources to “caregivers.” We've identified a “caregiver” as a person who gives their time, energy, attention, and support to family members or friends that are ill, handicapped, not able to survive on their own, or cannot be left alone. Caregivers seldom have time to take care of themselves and therefore lose balance while subsequently increasing their stress levels, as well

as the risk of becoming sick themselves. Caregivers often quit their jobs to stay home. They physically, mentally, and emotionally put all their efforts into their ill loved-ones. Financial hardship ensues, emotional imbalance occurs, and physical distress surfaces for full-time caregivers. More than 65 million people, 29% of the U.S. population, provide care for a chronically ill, disabled or aged family member or friend during any given year. 14% of family caregivers care for a special needs child with an estimated 16.8 million caring for special needs children under 18 years old. 55% of these caregivers are caring for their own children. 20 hours per week is the average number of hours that family caregivers spend caring for their loved ones while 13% of family caregivers are providing 40 hours of care a week or more. Whether it’s your mom, your child, your grandparents, your neighbor, or a close friend, when people are sick or shut-in they need someone to help them." Thanks to partnering organizations such as Heavenly Angels, Caregivers 911 provides professional and medically trained staff to assist families; Mean Green Cleaning Team for home cleaning services; and Cateriffic Cater-

Caregivers 911, Inc. officially launched in 2013, and will host its 2nd annual “WE CARE” fundraising event for Caregivers on Wednesday July 30, 2014 at the 444 Theatre in Atlanta, GA. “T

initiatives. As one of three powerful initiatives, YELL’s goal is to foster closer relationships with women and their daughters and/ or the young girls whom are mentoring to ‘help give a voice to young girls’. “This initiative will help promote communication skills, life coaching and community service – which includes vision boards, etiquette training, life coach skills, financial, etc.,” said Benjamin, who in 2012 created Yell Confidence, an initiative of “Saving Our Daughters” that works directly with celebrity

women who had experienced levels of domestic violence and date abuse. Subsequently, in March of 2014, a mother approached Saving Our Daughters on posting a very inspiring photo of her who suffered a life-threatening illness. “No one knows how much I really love this little girl. Lord, I can't even explain. My child suffers from sickle-cell anemia, (and) I would do anything to trade places with her. She's a strong fighter,” sobbed the mother. Following the exposure, thousands of moms sent in photos with their daughters who were also inspirational to them. This overwhelming response led to Saving Our Daughters creating a special campaign for moms called ‘Yell Moms & Daughters’ to help encourage mom and daughter relationships. “Since then, we have expanded the program to work with young mothers from Covenant House, a mother and child program that seeks to address the issue of homelessness and sexual abuse,” said Benjamin, who work in partnership with others to address issues of domestic and sexual abuses within families. “K-Michelle herself has also utilized Saving Our Daughters

She has been having self-esteem problems and sometimes feeling like no one cares for her and even contemplating taking her own life at school and home. I have her in counseling and try to keep her busy, but at the same time let her know how many people love her and how beautiful and talented she is. She really wants to join Saving Our Daughters and I think it will help her in a positive way. I am destined to do anything to keep my baby safe and loved.” Also R&B Diva & and original member of Destiny Child, LaTavia Roberson, is the national spokesperson for the Yell Mom Initiative and also has conducted a PSA directed by celebrity photographer, Derek Blanks. With their mission being simply to create the tools to get teen girls discussing key issues and fired up to take the power away from bullying, Saving Our Daughters, through their YELL Program, has to date, have addressed numerous date related abuses, hate crimes, school violence, violence against women, and other esteem slayers. “With this new YELL program launch, our aim is directed at informing the community (primarily single parent moms/women from ages 25-40 years of age) about the issues facing our mothers and daughters and for them to join in the fight to stop these horrific experiences being meted out to our mothers and daughters. ■

rom the time we were born until the time we leave this earth, health professionals obsess over this organ we call “the heart.” We have “heart” organizations dedicated to its research. Its symbol is the meaning of love… it’s the center of our emotions. It is affected by our physical activities. It can go fast; it can go slow. It limits your ability to live and exist. Without it you would cease to exist. But it’s so amazing how little we each know about our heart. In fitness everything is centered around the heart rate. Okay, time for a quick lesson in metabolism. Take your age (your real age) and subtract it from 220. This will give you your maximum heart rate. This is the heart rate you never want to exceed during exercise. We’re talking cardiac arrest here. Say you are 40. Your maximum rate is 180. When you get on a treadmill or bike, you NEVER want to reach this rate. If you do… slow down!! In aerobic exercise for a 40 year old, fat metabolism (when your body sheds fat) is at its greatest between 117- 135 bpm (beats per minute). This is a moderate/ low intensity level. At this level it takes a long time for your body to fatigue. If you put in 30 minutes, three times a week when you are burning nothing but fat, do you understand just

He attended Canton’s McKinley High School, which is known for having some of the most legendary high school sports programs in the country. After his playing days as a McKinley Bulldog, Ellis attended Ohio State University, where he studied Communications and was coached by the legendary Woody Hayes. He also played under the tutelage of then-Ohio State football assistant coaches Pete Carroll went on to become head coach for the NFL’s Seattle Seahawks, and Nick Saban, who went on to be head coach at the University of Alabama. “Coaches Carroll and Saban were perfectionists who didn’t tolerate mistakes,” Ellis recalls. He credits their tough coaching style to his being properly prepared for the rig-

ors of the NFL. Drafted 331st out of 332 players in the 1981 NFL Draft, Ray states that he was just as excited as if he had been selected 1st in that year’s draft. One of his fondest memories that occurred during his NFL career took place during his first NFL preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons, when he got an interception. Life was much simpler during the 1980s. Moments after making such a big play, Ellis looked over to the camera, and said “Hi Mom. Hi Darice (his then-girlfriend and soonto-be wife of 31 years to date).” Another proud moment in his career was when as a reserve player off the bench, he made a tackle on Chicago Bears’ Running Back Walter Payton, that impressed his coaches so much that they decided to make him the starting Strong Safety for the Philadelphia Eagles. Ellis acknowledges his most troublesome memory as an NFL player was the game when he hit the Dallas Cowboys’ Tony Dorsett and caused him to

THE REAL HUSTLE MAN: TinyStic™ Tech Entrepreneur and Author Gives Parents Credit For His Drive to Create, Innovate, and Build by Jacqueline Taylor-Adams

t’s been 24 hours since Eric Hamilton launched a crowdfunding campaign for his new innovation TinyStic™. The modest $5,000.00 campaign has amassed 12 funders, 3 comments, and raised $6,053.00 with 29 days of fundraising left to go. How does a Black boy from Detroit grow into a man who is being sought out by Nigerian tech entrepreneurs, Huffington Post, Black Enterprise, Google, T -Mobile, HP and more? Eric, says it’s, “Good stock.” With a clear love for his parents, Eric talks about his dad like he’s still a little boy watching a man move the world. Born and raised in Detroit, Eric Hamilton is the baby boy to Frances and Alfred Hamilton. One of two sons, Eric and his brother grew up with parents who hustled for their family. His father worked on the line at Ford, and his mother did customer service with Blue Cross and Blue Shield. In 1972 his parents began a part-time Amway business. Yes, Amway for those of you who remember! In 1975, they left their j-o-b and went full time in Amway, having had at one point the largest African American organization. Eric says, “My parents are the foundation of the hustle in me. I experienced my father waking up at 4a.m. to go to Ford, my mother getting us kids ready for school, going to their day jobs, then coming home and working their Amway business from 5p - 10p at night.” It’s the hustle and drive that was part of their family life that is ingrained in Eric today. As early as college, Eric leveraged MCI calling cards as a student at Michigan State University (MSU) at a time when student phone bills were attached to their school bills. Eric made thousands of dollars in about six months, until MSU contracted with AT&T to do the same thing he was doing.

We are not a part of the conversation, we are the conversation.” Martin is also a former founding editor for Savoy Magazine and the former founding editor of BlackAmericaWeb.com. So, the answer is no. I know exactly what my calling is and I’m going to continue doing exactly what I’m doing right now.” With a few decades of experience under his belt in his industry, numerous awards, accomplishments, accolades and dozens of media positions, there is no doubt that Martin would be considered an expert in his field. I wondered what advice he’d offer to young aspiring journalists. “I would give this advice to anyone – no matter what the profession: establish a good work ethic – that includes really understanding and studying your craft. I wanted to know what sparked Martin’s interest in journalism. Martin says that he’d once considered law as a profession. However, he shared that during his early grade school years he was involved with several media projects and knew that communications was for him. Later, he sought out a communications high school in Houston, noting that Houston has an extensive magnate program. “I’ve always enjoyed reading and writing and doing things in front and behind the camera. This is what I have been focused on for the past 31 years. I never looked back and it was a smart decision that has served me well.” Ebony Magazine named him one of the 150 Most Influential African Americans in the country for three consecutive years and he won the coveted 2008 and 2009 NAACP Image Award for Best Interview for “In Conversation: The Michelle Obama Interview” and “In Conversation: The Senator Barack Obama Interview.” A native of Houston, Texas, Martin stated to me that his radio show, Radio One, launched in October and the television show aired the following month. “It’s a three-hour daily syndicated show. The radio show is from 7a.m. to 10:00a.m., and the last hour is televised from 9 to 10a.m.,” explained Martin. Now living in Washington, DC, Martin is the former executive editor/ general manager of the nation’s most historic Black newspaper, the Chicago Defender. Speaking about his latest endeavor he told me that he’s very excited about his newest platform and that it was always his desire to have his own show. uerto Rican actor, Luis Ramos was raised in the South Bronx, NY during a time when racial barriers were both struggling and evolving simultaneously. He has seen it all, when it comes to diversity and intermingling of races. He said, “Growing up in the Bronx, Latinos were Diaspora, (scattered population with a common origin in a smaller geographic area). We were not Puerto Rican, not American, not Black nor White and so there was a tremendous identity crisis. My great-grandparents on one side were as dark as midnight and my other grandparents were White with green eyes. However, it was vital that I grew up with such a unique perspective where I learned about all of those cultures. Once, Roberto Clemente, a Black Puerto Rican baseball player for the Pittsburgh Pirates said in an interview, I never understood racism until I came to the United States and people began to judge me by the color of my skin.” Ramos is part of the cast of the new hit STARZ TV series, POWER that focuses on the lead character James “Ghost” St. Patrick played by Omari Hardwick, who is a wealthy New York night club owner who has it all, caters

Luis’s character, Carlos “Vibora” Ruiz is a part of his crew who represents the Latino culture and is determined to protect and provide for his family at all costs. The show is centered in Brooklyn, NY and has heavy integration of races all fighting for power using any means necessary. The alliances that are built among the cultures, although profiting through illegal means, are driven by the desire to provide a better life for their families. Luis says he can relate to his character in that he grew up around these same races, especially the African American culture. He knew more about Alabama by the time he was a teen, than he did about Puerto Rico. Coming from the street-life, he understands all of the characters’ mindsets on POWER. “The streets have transitions just like elementary, junior high, and high school, and you have to graduate from each and hopefully survive. But it takes intuitiveness to stay in the game as long as those characters have. Carlos has a ‘no matter what’ attitude to get what he needs to get done. Only those with families will understand this, whether the pathway is legal or illegal.” Luis hopes that those who watch, realize that power cor-

rupts. It can do many things and there are a lot of aspects similar to prison enlightenment involved with it. He explains that one must have the ability to shift and adjust to the life they are given. Ramos had no idea he would be an actor. He was chosen, over thousands of other inner-city kids, to attend the famous SCHOOL FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS in NYC where the TV show Fame was based. There, he found a love for performance inspired by many of the instructors. When his street mentality threatened his expulsion, he set on the path to “getting it right.” Because of his determination and the opportunity given to him, he met Harry Belafonte at the age of 17 and became a friend to his daughter. Since then, he has met many iconic individuals. After doing films like “The Miracle of Spanish Harlem” and “Trouble in the Heights” to name a few, he decided to move back home. He felt the need to be closer to his family. There was a sense of belonging that had to be fulfilled, and he was now in a position to give back like so many of the “Ghosts” and “Viboras” had done in the community that he grew up in. He remembers NBA’s Nate “Tiny” Archibald, who used to walk up to him when he was a kid and interact with him. Luis wants to be just as accessible in his hometown. His mom instilled in him, “Don’t put on airs for yourself, be respectful.” Ramos has been that way his whole life…He states, “At some point, someone will come into your path and tell you the truth and when they do, it will change your life. We must teach our children to be open-minded when that time comes. During this point in my life and career--my life has unfolded before me. You have to open your ears, eyes and heart to see what’s in front of you and adhere to it. Sometimes the thing in your life chooses you, you don’t choose it.” You can watch the POWER Television series on STARZ, Saturdays 9 ET/PT with Luis Ramos, Omari Hardwick, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Naturi Naughton, LaLa Anthony, Lela Loren and more. Quote: "Find someone in your life that will push you off the cliff, forcing you to fly."

SHARING HER TRUTHS AS SHE INVESTS IN WHAT’S MOST IMPORTANT…PEOPLE Written by Shernita Wiggins

E

melyn Stuart is one woman celebrating her Hispanic heritage through entrepreneurship and leaving legacies not only for her own culture, but for anyone who wants to achieve success through persistence. I met her over a year ago, after she recently moved from New York. She struck me as an inspirational individual after I watched a video interview about her life and work. When I had the opportunity to talk to her personally, she shared such motivational words, that it put me on the path to achieving my own dreams that I was once told would be impossible. I thought it was only befitting that her story is revealed to others, no matter the gender or culture. T2T: Share your upbringing and how it inspired you to become the woman you are today. I grew up in a primarily Caucasian neighborhood in Brooklyn and there was a strong emphasis on education. When I was growing up, my Hispanic parents couldn't speak any English but they wanted me to have what they called a "fighting chance." They hired a college student to help me with my homework and even got me a language coach to help me speak without our traditional Hispanic accent. The efforts my parents made and their belief in my abilities, gave me the strength to aim for the sky, and a drive for success. T2T: What/Who influenced your career? Explain how you are using it to help others. Being a producer allows me the privilege of helping people live out their dreams. I've often said that as a producer, who is an investor, I invest in people - their vision and talents. I have come to understand that making money is great, but helping others is a more powerful and lasting position. It allows me to serve and create change at the same time. I am influenced by women like Oprah Winfrey, Hillary Clinton, Kathleen Kennedy (Producer), Sheryl Sandberg (Lean In) and the countless women who pursue their dreams against all odds.

T2T

T2T: How do you maintain balance with a career and family? Outside of Stuart Films, I live a very simple life. My theory is, the smaller my house, the less time I have to spend cleaning, the more time I get to spend with my children when I'm home. I have a nanny who handles the everyday chores which frees me up to spend a lot of time with my children. Many working moth-

46 BUSINESS

ers have to work inside and outside of the house, most times leaving them with little time for themselves and their families. I place a larger value on quality time with my children than I do on material things like designer clothing, cars, etc. When I'm with my family, I'm with my family and when I'm working, I'm working. I try to live in each of those moments separately, enjoying every aspect of my life to the fullest. T2T: Do you find it hard as a woman to succeed in your career field? Being an independent producer is difficult; being a Latina producer is even more challenging. There are credibility issues and a lack of trust in women's ability to not just produce, but also direct projects. The great equalizer for me has been my business savvy and my ability to fund some of my own projects. That has removed the need for me to obtain a "permission slip" from the gatekeepers in this industry. It has also allowed me the opportunity to prove myself on my own dime. One of the things I think is important for women in this business is to not compete with the men, but rather learn to form profitable partnerships with them. Each of us brings something to the table that is worth money. We have to leverage our skills in a cooperative way. T2T: Tell something about yourself that you have not shared with the public, but it could help encourage someone else. I don't have some kind of master plan for my life. I'm seizing every opportunity that is presented to me and I'm pursuing all of my interests every day. I'm not saving anything for later, because later may never come. More than anything, I'm a servant who wants to leave a legacy of hope and opportunity for the next generation. To those sitting on the sidelines, waiting...I would say, "Find someone in your life that will push you off the cliff, forcing you to fly." T2T: Share a motivational quote that has inspired you to achieve. A rising tide will lift all boats. - John F Kenne dy To learn more about Stuart Films Group or upcoming ventures, follow her on FaceBook at: https://www.facebook.com/ emelynstuart or visit http://www.stuartfilmgroup.com/ This is not the last you will be hearing about Emelyn Stuart, Atlanta… so brace yourself for more! ■ JULY/AUG 2014

EICH was born in Quito, Ecuador and began playing guitar at 9 years old. At age 13, his family moved to the United States and by 15 he was already performing his original music for classmates. Now, at the age of 26, he still has the same drive as the kid who dreamed of traveling the world and sharing his music. This determination has allowed him to share the stage with very important artists in the Latin pop genre such as Mana in Atlanta, Luis Fonsi at “Premios lo Nuestro 2012”, and Joey Montana at “Premios Lo Nuestro 2011”. The young songwriter has performed in different markets of the US as well as international events like the Miss América del Mundo 2011 in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. In 2012 SEICH released his second single, “Sueña,” produced by RCeez, which debuted on the top ten of one of the most important Latin stations in Atlanta, LA Mega 96.5 FM. Thanks to the fans, it continued playing for 3 months. After finishing the recording process in Miami, Florida with producer Fernando Pastorino, the songwriter is ready to release his new album and its first single, “Cuando Hay Amor,” in early 2013. The people involved in making this album possible include Boris Milan (three time Latin Grammy winner), Glenn Schick (who has worked with Justin Bieber, Paulina Rubio), “El Papa” Pastor (bassist of Grammy Award winner artist Carlos Vives), along many others. The concept of this new material is to find hope during tough times, the feelings of a broken heart and the inspiration of a person who has found a new love. Thanks to hard work and perseverance, SEICH is paving the road and climbing upwards to become one of the most promising performers in Latin pop and he is ready to bring his music in your town! ■

year, but do we save and invest in more than that amount? Being informed about where you stand within society and as an individual comes with being enlightened with facts most don’t want you to know. Here are a few. According to Rev. Jackson, Many banks we save in, won’t lend to us. Yet we are reluctant to invest in our own lending institutions. The Small Business Administration’s lending to blacks over the past 5 years has gone from 11% down to 2%. But we won’t support minority businesses ourselves. Of the 20,000 auto dealerships, only about 200 are African American-owned giving us 1% of the market. Yet we will not support blackowned businesses. Rainbow P.U.S.H. is tackling Silicon Valley looking at companies like Apple, Ebay and Amazon, to name a few, to not only encourage more minorities to be placed on their boards and in corporate offices, but to benefit from the billions of dollars spent on advertising and marketing of their products. And to make matters worse, Rev. Jackson notates, Here in Georgia, there are over 1,400,000 black registered voters, but less than a third of them can be counted on to vote. He says, Less than your best, is sin, the wages of sin, is death and strife. So if you got $100 and you spend $200 then you get 100 votes and you spend 25, that’s calamity. You spend more than you make, or more than you have, then vote less than you have - that’s not the path to liberation. It took us 346 years to gain this right, so why can’t we have 100% of the votes that will not only drive the election, but could place elected minorities into almost every position. It’s not enough to just talk about it; we are born to PURPOSE, to be about it. Leaders like Rev. Jesse Jackson, those before him, and some in our generation, feel accountable to teach the next generation the importance of utilizing timeless values to continue the P.U.S.H. the “star of stars”, Mr. B, they called him. He could work five nights a week and make $5000. In that day, that was a lot…however, he could do a movie and two skits with the line, “Feet don’t fail me now.” and buck his eyes to make $75,000. Once he was asked to do this at a hotel affair and declined. Late one night, Eckstine was watching TV with his grandchildren and a man came on bucking his eyes and shuffling his feet. He acknowledged he was glad he did not do it. Because rather than have his grandchildren see that, he would have rather stuck a knife-pick into his heart. He had values that were non-negotiable. And I think that’s what made leaders, who survived the long-term. They had values that were nonnegotiable taught by their parents. Rev. Jackson said. Another came from Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. who told him that he took the money he got from the Nobel Peace Prize and gave it away to other organizations. He felt that if he died and left a lot of money, it would be a tarnish to his reputation, and to his legacy. He had no interest, really in money besides only the basic needs. He was willing to lose comfort through sacrifice for his cause. Rev. Jackson tells us that If You choose sacrifice over comfort, and choose reasonableness over greed, overcome the fear of jails and death, then you will have an unusual power. By doing this, you take the weapons away from the enemy. I deem this to mean that the enemy won’t be able to intimidate you, to change in his direction and conform, but rather, to stand firm upon what is right and true, no matter the test or trial that may befall you. Finally, there was his Economics teacher who made her students write down entire lectures and gave them 25 points for doing so, as long as every word was written out properly. This made them learn to read and write and attendance counted as 10 points, causing them to be accountable of their time and to what was important. When she was asked to leave A&T to teach at North Carolina, she declined because in her words, I am needed here. I am wanted there. I’d rather teach 30 of yall for less pay, than teach 5 of them and make more pay. It ain’t about that, that’s not why I got my PhD. As a former educator embodied with those same values, for the same reasons, I get it. There are certain responsibilities that we as a nation, a group of people should embrace and it’s called “accountability with dignity and determination”. Rev. Jackson shared that minorities brag about spending a trillion dollars a

Josiah Effect Powerful Novel Fuses Faith and Fiction, Proving God’s Determination to Heal. Masterfully crafted by D.L. Augustine, ‘The Josiah Effect’ follows the story of a successful Child Psychiatrist and a ten‐year‐old boy. After their lives cross paths, one letter serves as the catalyst for a chain of events that will positively impact the lives of many. While primarily fiction, Augustine’s narrative is also being used to help readers realize the importance of allowing God to heal them…

osiah means ‘God heals’ in Hebrew; an apt name for the young protagonist in D.L. Augustine’s new novel. ‘The Josiah Effect’ straddles both fact and fiction to reach into readers’ own adversity and allow them to view God and his ability to heal in an empowering new light. Told through gripping and ultimately an uplifting chain of events, Augustine’s masterpiece will allow anyone to grow closer to their faith and accept divine interventions with gusto. Synopsis: World renowned Child Psychiatrist Robin Giselle Walters has everything going for her. She has a great life, a career she loves, financial security and a place in the community. She thinks her life is perfect until she meets 10-year-old Josiah Martin, a child who is on an emotional precipice.

Josiah is a beautiful, precocious 10-year-old who has a dysfunctional, self-absorbed mother whom he loves with all his heart. In her own way, she loves him, but the pursuit of her own selfish desires keep her distracted and unplugged from her only child, that is until he writes a letter to God asking how he can get his mother to love him more.

52 AUTHOR CORNER

Robin and Josiah’s paths intersect after the letter comes to the attention of her best friend Tiffany Drayton, who is also Josiah’s teacher. After meeting Josiah, Robin feels a connection to the child unlike anything she has ever experienced before. The connection is deep and very personal. She is determined to save Josiah at all cost but as events are set into motion, and situations unfold, it becomes unclear, who exactly is saving whom? The letter sets off a chain of events of cataclysmic proportions. Before it’s over with, many people will be changed, renewed and enlightened as a result of being caught up in the whirlwind that is ‘The Josiah Effect. Others will travel to hell and back before they come to the realization of what it means to truly love and to forgive, and how God always answers prayers in His own time, and in His own way. “Everyone faces adversity and, while some people appear to be strong and even possibly ‘untouched’ on the outside, they can be internally shattered and feeling as if they have run out of options for saving themselves,” says Augustine. Continuing, “The answer is simple – they are not allowing God to heal them in their broken places. My story uses the innocent prayer of a single child to ‘save’ and enlighten many around him. It’s a microcosm of God’s power to spiritually restore each of us during our times of need. I hope that, by reading the book, my audience will accept God’s ability to heal and understand that he actively wants to help them become whole again.” ‘The Josiah Effect’ is due for release on August 22nd, at a dazzling launch party. T

he former NFL player and first AfricanAmerican quarterback for the New York Jets, has always tackled life without fear…even if it was present. As a rookie in 1987, when he was drafted to the New York Jets, his undeniable confidence showed during a training session. He was not deterred as a free agent in a position which embodied two capable players, which meant he could be faced with being on the sideline for a year. At 22 years old, he did not back up from the challenge of proving himself back then and today at 49, he has not lost his stride for life, and is still fighting for what is rightfully his. Walter Briggs is a native of Hackensack, N.J. and was raised in the projects with four siblings and a mother who demonstrated real strength and determination. His mother, Sylvia, did not allow her extenuating circumstances to stop her from achieving her goals, and managed to raise all of her children (11 months apart each) with the drive to achieve success no matter what. She became his example of inspiration by finishing school, landing a professional job and moving them out of the projects when Walter was 12 years old, into a better life. So naturally, when the opportunity arose, he would tackle it “literally” with determination. His creative abilities in theatrical arts were evident early as a youth; he was already being cast in popular Broadway shows, and he went on later in life to appear in a film that featured Tom Cruise. When his career as a professional athlete reached its “end zone”, Walter pursued a life in appearances for ESPN Sports, NBC TV-NFL Live, Fox News, Hard Copy, Sports Forum, WXIN Fox 59 and the Daily Buzz. While he was in his transition, he founded an elite cigar company, WB Brand Cigars, LLC in 2007 with custom labeling and packaging for celebrities and those who have a love for a premium cigar. In the midst of his life Walter explained, I had my share of PMS (Power, Money, and Sex). I had it all. My mother was my inspiration, but she couldn’t teach me how to be a man. Life taught me that, and the men God placed in my life during my professional football career. I wasn’t perfect, but I soon came to the conclusion, that whatever God wanted me to do, I would do it. And he has. Walter Briggs travels all over the world, giving motivational speeches, mentoring youth

and entertaining troops with scrimmage games consisting of present and former NFL players against the troops. After two failed marriages, he finally made the premier touchdown, when he met and married his wife, Debra Haugabrook-Briggs, who is the Vice President of their premium cigar company and until recently was a Family Case Manager for foster children. Their lives couldn’t be more perfect, but after a series of tests it was revealed on September 10, 2012 that his wife, Debra, had Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig’s disease. This diagnosis was devastating news to the young vibrant and seemingly healthy woman, who was told by her doctor, she had only two to three years life expectancy, and to get her affairs in order. The disease, although not widely given awareness because of its rarity, weakens the neurons in the brain and upper spinal cord which control muscles. It eventually leaves you completely paralyzed with only eye movement and at this time, there is no cure. Since her diagnosis, Debra has founded the, Debra’s Journey for Life Foundation, a non-profit that raises awareness, provides pertinent information on the disease, provide resources for families and pa-

y beginnings don’t predict my ending, it only highlights that I am destined to trod roads less traveled.” This quote could not be more defined for an individual than it is for Kineh N’Gaojia. From his humbling beginnings in Sierra Leone, West Africa until the age of nine, when some days were spent going without food, to establishing a love for two countries, positioning him to defend both. This can be attributed to what his father, Joseph N’Gaojia, told him, In order to know where you are going, you must know where you are coming from. Always lead from the front. Be a leader, not a follower, but humble yourself to be able to be led, in order to achieve greatness. Always keep God first. He recalls two pinnacles in his life, moving to New York from Sierra Leone at the age of nine, and retiring from the U. S. Army after being hospitalized for six months from injuries sustained in Afghanistan. Both of these transitions caused him to adjust to life through difficulty. Coming to the United States placed him in a position to gain the love and respect for another country enough to defend it, while still holding the love for his own country in his heart. This is evident in the career path that his military life took. After enlisting, he moved up the ranks quickly, retiring as a highly decorated Captain and war veteran after his injuries. He graduated from Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia, became a Paratrooper and Air Assault Soldier, and was deployed in combat zones in multiple tours that took him to Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Germany and here in the U.S. Although he lived the life of a stellar officer, that is not all that Kineh is comprised of. As a matter of fact, there is so much more to this man. He speaks two languages, English and French, acts, writes, models and has even established The Agnes Lebby Foundation in honor of his biological mother. The foundation focuses on humanitarian service to his native land, Sierra Leone, to rebuild homes destroyed or ruined by civil war and social issues. His desire is to build schools and hospitals, to bring about change to the economic struggles in those communities. Kineh N’Gaojia’s other side is entangled in many areas of entertainment. Two things that his childhood and military background have embedded in him are diligence and hard work. Through his gifted and talented abilities in acting, he has landed positions in films with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Robert DeNiro, Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Kline, and Tyler Perry productions. Modeling became a perk that evolved due to his charisma and athletic physique. Kineh shared, My passion is to express myself to the world. I want to share my gifts, past experiences, and I want the world to know my pain, struggle, my country and its beautiful people. One day I will tell these stories through film and TV with my writings. He acknowledges that he was blessed to have had a supportive father and two mothers, Agnes Lebby, and his stepmother, Lula N’Gaojia, who instilled in him how to love family, life and his countries. When an athlete plays at a level that makes their fans feel good, then the athlete can feel good that he’s bought joy to someone’s life.” In addition to his career as a pro-football player, and his transition to the business world, Mr. Ellis has been happily married to his wife, Darice, for 31 years. She is an employee for the City of Phoenix, and does environmental and sustainability work. They are the proud parents of two, a 21 year-old son, and a daughter who will be entering her second year at Pepperdine University. ■

hen told by his parents to stay in the house and practice his music, he never imagined that doing so would take him all around the world. Melvin Maurice Miller, world renowned composer, musician, musical director, songwriter, educator, and mentor, was born and raised in the city of Chicago, a place historically known for great jazz, and famous jazz musicians. Coming from an amazing family of talent, his father, Melvin Maurice Miller, Sr. played the trumpet, his mother, Carmelita Miller, was a singer and inspiration, and his sisters Diana and Cynthia were the singer and dancer. After graduating from high school, Melvin received a full scholarship from Tennessee State University where he received a bachelor’s degree in Music Education. He played in all of the university bands, and performed at the historic Montreaux Jazz Festival, prior to going back to Chicago to teach band and chorus at his old high school. Influenced by the remarkable talents of the great Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie, Melvin continued on a path of prominence with his craft and was given the opportunity to perform live with Dizzy Gillespie and many other luminaries. After relocating to Atlanta, people began to hear of Melvin and the quality of his work, which brought on other opportunities. Educated, refined, and driven, the word was out, and Melvin’s career soared. He traveled all around the world playing alongside famous musical greats such as Kim Waters, Kirk Whalum, Najee, Jennifer Holliday, Gloria Gaynor, and many others. He eventually landed a spot on BET’s Bet on Jazz, and was subsequently recruited by Mrs. Xernona Clayton, as the designated trumpeter for the historic Trumpet Awards. He was the music director for The Trumpet Awards, following in the footsteps of the great George Duke. An outstanding addition to the show, Melvin has been the trumpeter for the Trumpet Awards for the past 20 years. Enchanting, charismatic, and captivating are the three words that best describe Miller’s personality and his musical style. He fluently plays a number of instruments including keyboards, bass, drums, clarinet, flute, and of course his main love, the trumpet. Achieving a high level of success with his music, Melvin attributes that success to learning his trade,

networking, positioning himself in the right places for the right people to hear his music, and maintaining quality and professionalism with his skill. “The biggest initial obstacle of my career was being just a trumpet player,” says Miller. “Mr. Rod Smith, saxophone player once said to me you’re going to have to create your own niche and work at being a leader. So Miller combined being a front man and music director, with also being a recording artist and educator, and always represented himself in the best possible way. “Positive work ethics and quality of work got me projects, and I took all the situations that came my way and made them positive experiences.” Inspired and motivated by his mom, Miller realized that she was a major influence in his success, and losing her to lung cancer in 2009 not only made him question why he was playing, but also created the desire to honor her and become more philanthropic with his gift. It was because of his parents and his passion for education, that Miller founded the M3 Music Foundation. M3 is a spin-off of his name, Melvin Maurice Miller, and means “motivating and mentoring through musicianship. Miller gives back through the Foundation, which not only allows him to write and teach, but to also use his talent and connections to bring real world experiences to band directors and students everywhere. The M3 Music Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization committed to bridging the gap between young musicians, and established professional musicians, in order to provide the tools required to achieve a successful musical career, and to raise awareness about the importance of music as part of each child’s complete education. It’s all about bridging the gap between students and professional musicians. The students get to perform with Melvin, along with other professional musicians, to receive mentorship on how young men should dress, how young women should carry themselves, and everything from proper attire to financial literacy. The M3 Music Foundation also offers scholarships such as the Carmelita Miller Scholarship and other programs to build awareness of health and wellness initiatives. Mrs. Xernona Clayton is one of the biggest inspirations behind The M3 Music Awards, and Hank Stewart, poet and founder of the phenomenal group “Five Men On A Stool,” of which Miller is a member, is one of his mentors for the M3 Music Foundation. His upcoming projects include the inaugural M3 Music Awards, focusing on arts education, and will honor music students and educators who are artists in residence; and, The M3

Miller has two sons, Charles and Maurice, who both play the trumpet. His focus is to leave the proper legacy for his parents and sons to be proud of. SHARING THE STORIES THAT ARE LIVING TESTAMENTS OF LIFE Written by Shernita Wiggins

well on her way to accomplishing this goal. When I asked her the inspiration behind this particular play, she told me that it stemmed from a conversation with a close friend about how most women in their 30-40’s tend to have unrealistic expectations of their ideal mate, most of the time, creating a list that they cannot live up to in comparison. Peachanda feels that when we allow God to place people into our lives, we will be better off, which is something she admits to learning the hard way. Her cast consists of legendary jazz sensation, Theresa Hightower, Tony Hightower with credits from Tyler Perry’s plays, and Trae Ireland who has been in David E. Talbert productions. Those who were present on that day shared their personal thoughts and connection to their characters. When you attend this play, you will see a familiar face…from the overbearing friend who is upfront, to the love struck man determined to claim his prize, and the confused woman whose depiction of a “real man” lies within the confines of the façade that is a mirage, to that friend who shoots it to you straight-no-chaser, right along with that other friend, who will break it down and analyze your life enough to shed light on the situation. Peachanda and the cast wants the audience to take away this: Don’t allow someone else to determine your self-value or worth. Be there for your friends and tell them the truth even if it hurts, because this is real! So be careful what you pray for. Tickets can be purchased at www.peachandadubose.com. This is a MUST SEE play filled with lies, deceit, confusion, anger, control, true love and even revelation. ■ Visit www.peachandadubose.com for more information.

fter attending the rehearsal of the upcoming play, The List, here in Atlanta, the Dr. Maya Angelou quote was the first thing that came to mind about the storyline. Director and playwright, Peachanda Dubose reflected so much passion into the development of this play and her cast exhibited equal passion in the execution of their characters. The Wilmington, Delaware born native who currently resides in Charlotte, NC, at least for now, is planning to move to Los Angeles, CA after her play hits the WinstonSalem, NC Theater on August 23rd and Porter Sanford Theater on October 2nd. Peachanda shared that she was compelled to choose this career as a platform to change, uplift, encourage, motivate and inspire others through the stories she would tell and present on stage or film in a real or relevant way. According to her, There are definite challenges as a woman in this field, but then again, there are some challenges that I had to endure that I didn’t choose. So I welcome them because it makes me a better writer, business woman and overall artist. I want to leave a legacy that my children will be proud of so that they can build upon what I started. tients who are faced with unexpected financial detriment from the impact of the disease. At this point, Walter Briggs realized that the woman who had become his second chance at a new lease on life and supporter of his dreams…needed him and he had to now become HER…biggest fan. This was something that he was familiar with from his life during his professional football career. He said, The fans that loved you or the team, supported you to the fullest. Whether they went to the extent of wearing creative attire, following the team or being the “twelfth man” that pushed us to do our best each game, you could always count on THE FANS. That is what I am for my wife. The fans meant the world to me…they were the ones who kept me going when I didn’t think I could continue. Although, during the game, we were disciplined to tune everything, but the game out, before and after the game, we showed our love back. So I continually keep myself fit and mentally motivated to provide everything my wife needs as her caregiver and motivator. Walter says that sometimes his wife becomes downhearted, but his response to her is reflected in his undying love and devotion to the vows he took with consolation. He accredits his strength to God, his mother and his brother Willie Briggs who gives him spiritual inspiration and recently received his PhD in Theology. He leaves these words to others, Don’t ever quit. You have a dream or vision, GO FOR IT! For more information about the foundation, go to: www.debrasjourneyforlife.org ■
