L

eadership is essential in the process of developing institutions in our community. Without effective leadership the best that we can expect to happen is mediocrity and ineffectiveness. Leadership must recognize that it is important to me known and Light but from a community perspective it is far more important to be respected. For nearly 10 years i have been striving to make and keep my word bond. When I was inspired by the Creator to take on this task I had no idea how we would pay for it what the overall challenges would be and honestly if we were going to be able to make it at all. Nevertheless I pushed on and now today we are celebrating over six years of direct service and serve over 200 people per week in various programs and services. N the recent conversations about leadership I express 2 these individuals that they should be careful 4 what they ask for because they just might get it. Are Soft Skills More Valuable Than Academic Skills In The Workforce? (NAPSI)—From preschool through college, teachers are instructed to build students’ academic skills, like reading, writing and arithmetic. However, students leave the classroom untested for many skills that are directly applicable to one’s career. Soft skills may not be “graded,” but they can make or break your career. Soft skills are increasingly important to success in the workplace; it’s no longer enough to rely on technical skills to set yourself apart. Employees must also demonstrate highly developed interpersonal skills, which contribute to a positive work culture and promote strong teamwork and enhanced leadership abilities. And employers are looking for employees who are efficient and demonstrate the ability to manage their time wisely, whether it’s juggling multiple projects or avoiding personal distractions.1 A recent 2016 national curriculum survey conducted by the American College Test (ACT) found that supervisors and employees ranked the lack of three nonacademic skill areas—conscientiousness, problem solving and critical thinking—among the top five skills most likely or very likely to lead to a poor outcome for an employee2. “Soft skills begin to develop at a very young age, and it’s essential to support the growth of these skills,” said Constance St. Germain, J.D., Ed.D., executive dean for University of Phoenix Colleges of Humanities & Sciences, Social Sciences, and Security and Criminal Justice. “Integrating soft skills into our curriculum alongside technical knowledge is an integral approach that University of Phoenix uses to prepare our students for success in the workplace.” Dr. St. Germain highlights the following as among the most valuable soft skills: 1. Communication: Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, are integral to success in any industry. A recent Pew Research Center survey found that communication ranked first among the skills that Americans believe are most important for children to have to get ahead in the world3. 2. Critical Thinking: According to the ACT survey,

more postsecondary science instructors cited weakness in critical thinking than in content knowledge as most likely to contribute to a poor outcome for a student4. Critical thinking skills are necessary to navigate a variety of workplace challenges, including making big decisions and communicating a point of view. 3. Collaboration: Collaboration is key to a company’s success, especially as the landscape of industry demands continues to evolve. According to Cisco, over the past 20 years, as companies have begun to automate or outsource many structured or process-oriented tasks, much of the work that remains is complex and highly collaborative5. 4. Problem Solving/Creativity: Problem solving requires a willingness to be creative and think outside the box. Professionals who are willing to be patient and approach problems from all angles are more likely to find solutions, and to be noticed by their supervisors for their resourcefulness. 5. Emotional Intelligence: Emotional intelligence (EQ) is as valuable as IQ in the workplace: having perseverance, self-control and the ability to get along with others is necessary throughout one’s career. According to TalentSmart, 90 percent of top performers have high emotional intelligence6. Fifty-eight percent of job performance is also attributed to EQ7. 6. Professionalism: Adult learners can begin to incorporate professional behavior in the classroom through their approach to learning, teamwork, tackling assignments and accomplishing their educational goals. The professionalism necessary to successfully complete a degree program, especially as a working adult who may be balancing other responsibilities, can create a strong foundation that will translate into the workplace. To succeed in business, women need to master both hard skills (political savvy, technical competence) and soft skills (communication and teamwork).

Women In The Workplace: What It Takes To Succeed Today, the majority of women are entering the workforce. So what advice can women follow to enhance their careers and help overcome barriers to success? Challenges Remain While today’s opportunities are unrivaled, professional women face challenges and inequities. For example, women are still paid less than men across professions; they are underrepresented in executive positions; and studies show that women must work harder for a pay raise or promotion. “Women are aware that even when they have a seat at the table, they may not always be sitting level with their male counterparts,” said Constance St. Germain, Ed.D., J.D., executive dean, College of Humanities and Sciences, College of Social Sciences at University of Phoenix. “Women are too often overlooked for promotion as a result of conscious and unconscious gender myths, biases and societal stereotypes that are in the workplace even in 2016. Men and women are engaging more than ever to address this, but there is still work to be done.” According to a new survey by Morning Consult and University of Phoenix, only 33 percent of women believe men and women working the same job make the same amount. The number of men who feel this way is higher but still only slightly over half (54 percent). An underlying challenge for women can be navigating an environment that lacks support for their perspectives. The survey also found that one in three respondents agreed that there were too few positive female leaders at their company. More than Hard Work and Talent To continue rising in the workforce, it takes not just technical skill, but political savvy. “No one can afford to be apolitical at work if he or she aspires to advance to the executive level,” St. Germain said. “While technical competence is important, in my experience, political savvy is a leadership skill that can be a key differentiator in an individual’s success.” As a leader in higher education and organizational change, St. Germain believes political savviness is really about emotional intelligence. It is about understanding the importance of building collaborative interpersonal relationships, building trust, maintaining one’s composure and being able to put people at ease. Dustin Weaver is 2017 Ohio Teacher of the Year When Dustin Weaver teaches English classes at Chillicothe High School, everyone listens, including students, administrators, fellow teachers and aspiring teachers from college education classes. His passion for making teaching engaging and effective, and his dedication to students are two of Dustin Weaver many reasons why Weaver received the title Ohio Teacher of the Year on Sept. 22 at his alma mater. Dustin Weaver exemplifies excellence in teaching,” said Paolo DeMaria, state superintendent of public instruction. “He shines the light on the outstanding work our teachers do every day in the classroom and in the community to make a difference in their students’ lives. He deserves our thanks and recognition and so does Chillicothe City Schools for creating conditions in which teachers can succeed.” Chillicothe High School requires all new teachers to observe Weaver in conducting new, school-wide teaching approaches that Principal Jeff Fisher, 2015 Ohio Principal of the Year, introduced to better engage students and improve learning. Dedicated to continually improving, Weaver has invited the entire school staff to critique his videotaped lessons as they all work together to hone their teaching skills. Previously at Logan Elm High School in Circleville for six years, Weaver returned to his hometown high school four years ago. Through his service on the district and school leadership teams, he focuses on improving attendance, reducing discipline incidents and addressing issues facing students who come from lowincome homes. This work led to Weaver coordinating the Chillicothe Cadets grant program that is targeted to students who are at risk of dropping out of school. He focuses on

State announces ACT/SAT guidance for students with disabilities who take the Alternate Assessment for Students with Significant Cognitive Disabilities

The Ohio Department of Education is announcing that students with disabilities who take the Alternate Assessment for Students with Significant Cognitive Disabilities (AASCD) instead of the general Ohio State Tests are exempt from the requirement that all 11thgrade students participate in the ACT/SAT. This does not, however, prohibit a student with a significant cognitive disability from taking the ACT or SAT if the developing students’ self-esteem and professional skills as they make connections for future jobs. Because he wants to make sure all students learn, Weaver created a lab course for those who need extra help and an online class for those who need flexibility. He also helps prepare college-bound students for college entrance exams. Jon C. Saxton, the Chillicothe City Schools superintendent who nominated Weaver for the award, said, “Dustin Weaver combines great talent, personality, leadership and concern for students with high energy and a tireless work ethic. In fact, he has set off the burglar alarm in the wee hours while coming in to work late!” Weaver serves as the high school’s English department coordinator, activity director, attendance coun-

Program Proves Low Income Children Can Learn a 2nd Language (Even at Just 3-Years Old!)

A

ccording to The Dana Foundation, a private philanthropic organization that supports brain research, researchers have shown that the bilingual brain can have better attention and task-switching capacities than the monolingual brain. In other words, learning a second language can enhance academic as well as social skills. Other researchers agree. One elementary school in the poorest ward of Washington D.C. is taking this knowledge to the next level by offering a second language to low-income students. Kids can learn at very young age In Ivonne Kendrick’s classroom at Houston Elementary School, 3-year olds are learning Spanish as a second language. Already they are able to sing Spanish songs, understand how to ask for a snack and when to form a line; every other day focuses on Spanish. Even for students who struggle learning proper English, the bi-lingual program is believed to be able to enhance students’ learning in English. Proof that it works Kendrick's class is not the first to try this approach. A similar dual-language program in North Carolina between 2007 and 2010 showed that low-income black children in these programs scored higher in reading and math than their black classmates with equal socioeconomic backgrounds who were being taught just one language.

At the Hub the focus has been to look at each one of those three areas and from that formulate they process that is institutionalized in an effort to create sustainability far too often have we focused on one thing or another but very seldom do you find Grassroots community-based organizations or otherwise focusing on all three areas it is important to understand that these areas are intertwined crosspollinated and share a vested interest when you are in need of an opportunity such as being employed you're going to have to have some level of Education to secure that position if you want to start a business you're going to need some level of Education to run your business and be successful furthermore as the Hub continues in its philosophies and Concepts we should not Overlook the idea of why it is important to build relationships with the community and the people that you serve when you have solid relationships when you build trust in the community the community then will respond better to not only your services but also to how you critique them and help them to become self-sufficient and ultimately empowered to take control of their lives. On Friday the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the unemployment rate has fallen to a three-year low of 8.5%. Of particular note is that private sector employment was up more than expected in December. Tall of this could just be a one-month data fluke, but it is also encouraging that the number of new jobless claims has been declining recently as well. Jobs are important to the economy for a

number of reasons. One of the most important reasons is that jobs are by far the primary source of income for U.S. households. The Bureau of Economic Analysis estimates that for the 3rd quarter of 2011 the total of all income earned in the U.S. was 13.4 trillion dollars (seasonally adjusted at annual rates). Of that total, 8.3 trillion dollars or just shy of two-thirds was paid in the form of wages and salaries. Most of us think of unemployment as a bad thing for exactly this reason; jobless people earn no wages and, as a result, suffer from a whole host of associated problems. The reason we have programs like unemployment insurance and other jobless benefits is to help alleviate these problems to some degree. But another very important reason that jobs are important is that jobless people who want to work are a valuable resource that goes unused. Small business development While small businesses may not generate as much money as large corporations, they are a critical component of and major contributor to the strength of local economies. Small businesses present new employment opportunities and serve as the building blocks of the United States' largest corporations. A small business is defined as a business (corporation, limited liability company or proprietorship) with 500 employees or less. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), small businesses

represent 99.7 percent of all employer firms. Since 1995, small businesses have generated 64 percent of new jobs, and paid 44 percent of the total United States private payroll, according to the SBA. Small businesses contribute to local economies by bringing growth and innovation to the community in which the business is established. Small businesses also help stimulate economic growth by providing employment opportunities to people who may not be employable by larger corporations. Small businesses tend to attract talent who invent new products or implement new solutions for existing ideas. Larger businesses also often benefit from small businesses within the same local community, as many large corporations depend on small businesses for the completion of various business functions through outsourcing. Education Education is important in life because it gives people the skills and tools they need to navigate the world. Without education, people would not be able to read, write, calculate or communicate; they would also not be able to perform jobs competently, accurately and safely. Education also teaches people about the world in which they live, including information about history, philosophy and culture. At its most basic level, education is important because it gives people the baseline skills to survive as adults in the world. These skills include basic literacy and numeracy, as well as the ability to communicate, complete tasks and work with others. Education is essential for nearly every type of job or career, and in many cases, education makes the difference between being able to perform a job safely and accurately and being unable to perform a job at all. However, many people believe that education is important in life for reasons beyond basic survival skills. Eleanor Roosevelt famously said that education is essential to good citizenship and that education is important to life because it enables people to contribute to their community and their country. Others believe education is important because it helps to answer life's big questions, including questions of how to live, work and love. Still others believe that education is important because it teaches people about the world around them. Where There Is Vision……

S

o many of us have dreamt the “American Dream” of having our own business, no longer working for the man! Maybe we bake those cookies that everyone loves, maybe we decorate our home like a pro or we have a special way with children and one day someone says those famous words that resonate in our spirit “You know you could make a lot of money doing this”. So the vision is formed in our mind, occupies our thoughts and most importantly goes from our head to our heart. Now, that the vision is birthed the planning begins or shall I say should begin. In a book I once read it states “Where there is no vision the people perish…Write the vision and make it plan…” Unfortunately, so many small business owners don’t take the time, effort and training it takes to create a legitimate business entity or shall I say “Get Legit”. We get so excited about the vision that we don’t write down anything and then we get upset when we get audited or inspected and fined. Then we blame “the man” when it was actually our own negligence. We were under the false belief that it really that important to write a business plan. Who is going to read it anyway? Many of us do not even take the time to register our business with state and federal entities. We don’t take the time to research the best business structure for the type of business idea we envisioned. We just start taking orders for those cookies, baking and making money! Don’t get me wrong I love making money, but not at the price of temporary financial gain only to later suffer from long term tax evasion pain. By taking the easy road of the “Sole Proprietor”, were you aware that if you do not follow the proper and legal steps to set up your business you are a sole proprietor by default? Just like if you do not have a “Will” the state has one for you, if you do not create your own business structure The IRS has one for you. How to Properly Quit Your Job to Start Your New Business By Sharon S. Gordon OK so you are now ready to quit your job and transition into business ownership full time or you may be interested in exploring your other options. To do so, many individuals make the decision to turn in their resignation or to quit. If you are interested in quitting your job, you will want to continue reading on. A few tips on how to properly terminate your current position are outlined below. The best thing that you can do, when looking to quit your job, involves giving your employer as much notice as possible. Many employers expect to receive at least two weeks worth of notice from those who are interested in seeking employment elsewhere. If at all possible, you may want to consider giving more than two weeks notice. Unless you have a new job lined up, you may want to offer to stay until a replacement is found or until you are able to secure a new job.

When turning in your resignation, you will want to do so in a formal matter. At all costs, you will want to avoid quitting over the phone or in an email. You will want to type up a proper notice on your computer and submit a printout to your employer, particularly in person. Though the dough can change its shape, it resists the change and tries to move back to its original shape. I have been a dough girl. The flour and water forms the network that gives bread its shape. Shortening and butter tends to make dough more easily workable and the final product more moist and tender, while also, in many cases, adding flavor. Eggs are binders which help hold all the ingredients together. Egg whites, are often used to produce a light, airy texture, and yolks contribute to the color, flavor, and

texture of baked products. But, too many egg whites, such as in a reduced-fat cake recipe make it dry. If you’re a vegan, consider using bananas, flax seed or chia seed as substitutes. (more in following articles) Sugar can also tenderize (and of course makes it sweet) because it prevents the flour from forming. Liquids bridge both categories as a toughener or a tenderizer. But, too much liquid will cause a baked good to collapse or the batter to become too thin. Now that does not mean that a person doesn't need rest nor does that mean that you neglect your health for the mission however there's only so much time you can can sleep or rest. Virtual Employees and Outsourcing…grow your business from the outside in. By Sharon S. Gordon When we say something is “virtual” in modern terminology, we are almost always talking about something related to the internet. So Virtual Dating is dating using the internet. “Virtual” does not mean something that does not exist. But it implies you are replacing a normal physical entity with a real but for the most part unseen entity that lives online. The trend in strategic business planning is to incorporate an aggressive “virtual marketing” plan with your traditional plans. So it makes sense that eventually the move to virtual resources would reach human resources with the availability of virtual employees. In the last two or three years, virtual employment has taken off and become a very real resource for businesses wishing to tap into valuable experience and subject matter expertise that cannot be found locally. Agencies such as Team Double Click and Rent-ACoder provide an army of ready to work professionals that can step in and get a job done quickly and efficiently for an employer. The obvious first application of virtual workers is to subcontract to an online employment agency certain task specific projects that have a short beginning, mid-

dle and end. Building a new function into a web page is a good example of a project that can be packaged into an understandable project and signed over to a virtual consultant to perform the work and return to the online employer. The handling agencies collect funds via escrow so neither the employer or the consultant are at risk and the handling company claims a percentage of the fee as part of their pay for facilitating the partnership. Everybody wins. But the concept of virtual employment is going beyond providing another variation on outsourcing to a consultant. Many virtual employment agencies provide administrative assistants, sales support and many other functions normally associated with a full time employee but those services are done “virtually”. A virtual office manager can have calls routed to his or her remote phone, emails redirected and conduct office meetings and negotiations with vendors via email or instant messaging. Using these modern tools, a virtual assistant can provide almost every function an on site assistant might be able to do but do so at a lower cost to the employer. The virtual employment trend in business has obvious benefits for businesses that are in need of qualified help. It opens the door to recruitment sources that can supple-

ment the local talent pool. Many times virtual staffing agencies may have on their “employee roles” people with a specialized background or skill. The agency is skilled at defining exactly what their client businesses need and matching up the right virtual employee to the job so the business has the right skill sets where they need them, when they need them and only for as long as they need them. In addition to the benefits that virtual employment has for businesses to fill needs for skilled workers, it’s an excellent resource for talented workers who want to make a contribution to the business world on their own terms. Virtual workers almost universally work at home or where they chose to work. Often the work is task based with a deadline so the worker can select the hours that fits their family and personal schedules best. And, like working for a temp agency, the employee can build a resume with the agency that improves the quality of work they get over time. Virtual staffing is a trend that has been a success for all involved as it has matured in the last few years.
