Wieses’ winter project produces giant snowman By Abby Wiedmeyer abby.w@dairystar.com
GREENLEAF, Wis. — What started as a fun winter activity last year has turned into a tradition, as the Wiese family produced a giant snowman on their dairy farm again this year. This time, more preparation went into the project. “Last year, it was kind of a warm day toward spring, and my ve grandkids wanted to do something outside,” Dave Wiese said. “So, after about ve hours, we had it all carved out, but then everybody had to tease us and tell us somebody else built a bigger one. So, this year we prepared a little bit.” The snowman, built in a parking lot, stands 32 feet tall including the hat and is equally round. Wiese prepared by plowing snow into a pile every time it snowed. There were a couple of 1- to 3-inch snowfalls that gave him all the snow he needed. Then, they got hit with a blizzard that produced another 6 inches of snow. Wiese and his partners milk 6,400 cows in two parallel parlors near Greenleaf. The farm is operated as a partnership between Wiese, Mark Wiese, Ross Wiese, John Wiese and Dan Wiese. Wiese was set on building the snowman Jan. 20, but it was a cold day and everyone else wanted to watch the Green Bay Packers game. They put it off until the following day, even though

He attened the top, packed the rest of the snow pile and then carved the snow with his ve grandchildren. They started at the top and worked their way down. The snowman’s head is about 6 feet tall, and each level below gets a few

feet wider. The base layer measures 140 feet around. The family used shovels to carve out the levels. The entire process, from the time supplies were gathered until the carving was done, took about 5.5 hours. “Everybody was pretty tired at the end, so we didn’t actually decorate it that day,” Wiese said. “The kids would stay out and help for a bit and then go back in and warm up.” Wiese used a piece of 36-inch culvert for the top of the hat and a tractor innertube around it for the brim. The eyes are round corn planter discs, the nose is a safety cone, and the mouth is a 6-foot piece of drain tile. “It was all parts from the farm that we had just lying around,” Wiese said. “It is not perfectly shaped; he looks a little like the Michelin Man.” The family shared photos of the project on the farm’s Facebook page and asked followers to help name the snowman. The community came up with the name Taylor Drift, which is a play on the famous singer’s name. The snowman is clearly visible from Highway 57 so passers-by can enjoy the sight. Last year’s snowman was built further off the road, so Wiese wanted to make sure more people could see it this year. “Every time I’d drive by it last
year, I would smile, so I put it out there this year,” Wiese said. “When we were building it, people were driving by, blowing the horn. I had a semi driver stop to take a picture with his semi in front of it the other day.” Now the family is having social media followers predict when Taylor Drift will melt completely. Wiese said they plan to continue the tradition next year and will plan on more ideas. “It’s a family affair,” Wiese said. “When this gets out, I will have lots of help next year.” Wiese’s father purchased the original farm in 1972. Six brothers started a partnership in 1982 as a cash cropping operation. In 1995, the dairy operation was started and has grown to its present size. The current owned and rented land is approximately 7,000 acres. Two principal partners remain — Wiese and his brother, Mark. The other partners are their sons and a nephew. Cows are housed in free stalls and bedded with ber bedding. A ber separator is used to separate manure, which is then run through composting drums to heat and sterilize it before it is reused for bedding. “We’ve done that for about 17 years,” Wiese said. “It takes management, but we’ve got good people in place, and it works really well.”

ROTHSCHILD, Wis. — Skin issues have plagued Michelle Neathery her entire life. When her youngest daughter was born with the same issues, she found a better way to care for her own skin and that of her child. “I have always had eczema, dermatitis; I get hives from just about everything,” Neathery said. “Then my youngest daughter was born and had eczema scales all over her face. She would scratch, and her face would always be all cut up. So, I tried a natural soap made here in the area, and it was great. But, I wanted a little more control over what went into it and the fragrances.”
Neathery began experimenting by making soaps. One of those experiments gave her the result she had been dreaming of achieving. She found soap made from goat’s milk to provide the skin relief she and her daughter had been craving. “I started out making soap using oatmeal, and that helped my skin a lot,” Neathery said. “Then, I tried goat milk as an experiment, and I have never turned back.” As Neathery saw success with her own health, her friends and co-workers took notice and began asking to buy soap from her. Twenty years later, Neathery is the owner of Little Bull Falls Soap Works in Rothschild. Working full time in addition to running her business, Neathery said she relies greatly on the help of her husband, Kevin, and her daughter, Brianna Baker. Besides her storefront presence, Neathery markets soaps online and attends a vast number of craft shows each year.

Some of the more than 100 varieƟes of soap made from goat’s milk sit on the shelves Feb. 3 at LiƩle Bull Falls Soap Works in Rothschild, Wisconsin. Michelle Neathery uses nearly 100 pounds of powdered goat’s milk each year to make the soaps. She sells her soap both retail and wholesale and has customers from around the U.S. as well as internationally. The business was launched in earnest in 2003, with a storefront presence added four years ago, just before the coronavirus pandemic. While many small businesses struggled and faltered during the pandemic, Neathery said she was thankful to be able to keep her store open. She was deemed as an essential business because she was selling soaps and hand cleansers. She continued to build her online presence. Not a dairy farmer herself, Neathery sources goat milk produced in Wisconsin from a woman who collects and freeze-dries the milk. Working with powdered goat milk is more convenient for her than working with liquid milk, Neathery said. “I don’t have to worry about the milk spoiling,” she said. “I don’t have to worry about freezing it and having the storage for that.” Between 75-100 pounds of powdered goat milk go into Neathery’s soaps each year, and she estimates she sells several thousand bars of soap during the year. Neathery makes soap year-round, but the quantity she makes each week varies throughout the year. “Right now, I am making soap once a week,” she said. “But when I am making soap once a week, I make three batches, so I am making about 200 bars each week. Usually, in July, I start making more soap to build my inventory for the fall and will be making soap several days each week.” Once the soap is made, it is allowed to set for 24 hours before it is cut into bars and placed on drying racks to continue the curing process. Neathery said it requires at least six weeks to cure to be ready to be packaged. All varieties of Little Bull Falls Soap Works are made from the same basic recipe, with differences coming from the blend of essential oils, the natural fragrance oils and the natural colorings Neathery uses. Neathery has over 100 varieties of
soap in her store. She said while some of the soaps were created with a seasonal theme in mind, she tends to keep them stocked throughout the year. Her best seller is Door County Cherry. “Keeping everything very natural is important to me,” Neathery said. “Some people immediately think of chemicals when they hear fragrance oil, but I use the highest quality fragrance oils and only ones that are natural.” Even with the other natural ingredients, Neathery said what makes her soaps successful is the use of goat milk. “The goat milk is the key,” Neathery said. “I have a vegan soap, but almost no one buys that because the goat milk is so good for your skin. That is what makes the soap so good.” Neathery continues to improve both her soaps and her business model by working to source more of her ingredients locally. “Keeping things as local as possible is important to me,” Neathery said. “When you buy local, you know more about what has gone into the product you are buying.” Neathery is a member of the Something Special from Wisconsin program which is administered and promoted by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection. The designation recognizes that at least 50% of a product’s processing, production or ingredients are from Wisconsin. “When I rst started, I was sourcing my goat milk from one of my ingredient suppliers, but they were from Ohio,” she said. “Now I am using milk produced in Wisconsin. I am moving away from olive oil to more sunower oil, because that is a product I can source from here in the U.S.” What started as a desire to help herself and her daughter turned into a passion for Neathery, one she wanted to share with others. “Struggling with skin issues is frustrating, but healthy skin just makes you feel good,” Neathery said. “Creating something that helps solve those issues is a good feeling. The goat milk adds so much to the soap. It is creamier and so good for your skin.”

377 members Sun Prairie, Wisconsin Dane County Tell us about your chapter. We are an active chapter. We do a lot of community service and a lot of agriculture education and advocacy. Also, many FFA students compete in a variety of contests. How does your chapter volunteer in the community throughout the year? Our chapter does several volunteering events. This ranges from ringing bells for The Salvation Army to going to our elementary schools to teach about agriculture. Even throughout the summer, we attend events to provide learning experiences for youth and provide services at a local senior center. We also do lots of local events like our strawberry fests, kiddie farms and candlelight hikes.

Our biggest fundraiser is the plant sale. Throughout the year in our agriculture classes and FFA, members grow plants that we sell in the spring. What are the biggest events of the year? Our biggest events are Marsh Madness and Food for America where we do activities to engage with the youth in our community. What is unique about your chapter? Our chapter does a handful of things that might not be considered normal. To promote FFA and make the
beginning stages of being an FFA member easier, we make all member meetings engaging. We do a traditional turkey bowling meeting. It sounds exactly how it is. We duct tape a frozen turkey and throw it across the classroom at bowling pins. The meeting gets competitive quickly. We try to plan every meeting to be just as fun as the last. We have an upcoming meeting in February that is agriculture-olympic themed. Even outside of our meetings, we have a driven chapter that is always scheduling conferences or community service opportunities. We always have something for our members to do to stay involved. Inc. is managed by our second generation with our third approaching. Our farm became incorporated in 1971. At that time, common enterprise was dairy and swine. Our founders, Donald and Richard Statz, were managing the operation at that time. Throughout the 1970s into the 1980s, the focus was directed on the dairy enterprise, and the hog enterprise left the farm. Our rst expansion happened in 1991 which led way to a concentrated animal feeding operation. A second expansion started in 2012 by adding a second milking operation. This location milks 3,050 cows in a double-50 parallel parlor. Together, both locations milk around 4,300 animals which consist of Jerseys and Holsteins. We grow and manage our crops to feed the livestock. Heifer calves leave our operation daily to go to custom raisers and return conrmed pregnant. We keep about 30 calves per month to raise for beef. Why did you join FFA? I chose to join FFA because I want to absorb the learning experiences it has to offer. I enjoy all the activi-
What is your role in the chapter? Currently, my role in our chapter is sentinel. For contests, I have competed in creed speaking and parliamentary procedure. I look forward to the National FFA Convention & Expo every year because I always meet new people and have been on really awesome tours. Our monthly meetings are fun, too, and I love welcoming new members to show them what FFA is all about and ensure everyone is included in some way.

Frigid temps wreak havoc on dairies Tim and Amy Scanlan, of Fennimore, Wisconsin, prepared for the cold weather that moved across the Midwest from Jan. 29-31, 2019. However, like many other farmers, they had problems occur. Between tractors not starting and water lines freezing, they kept busy. Tim Pieper, of New Prague, Minnesota, also commented on how doing chores took six hours, even with help. While farmers were doing what they could to keep their cows safe, comfortable and warm, others were encouraged to avoid any travel that was not necessary. Unlike other winter storms, this system arrived with snow and then lingered with wind speeds surpassing 30 miles per hour in some areas. Marshiks lean on relationships, efficiencies to stay dairying Near Rice, Minnesota, Brandon and Jill Marshik could be found working hard to keep their dairy farm operating. When they bought the farm in 2014, they started with a milking herd of 23 and grew to 80 by 2019. In the beginning of their dairying career, Brandon and Jill worked tirelessly to improve cow comfort and milk quality. The couple managed to reach an 80-pound bulk tank average with an average somatic cell count of 30,000-40,000. In 2015, the couple started using the CowManager system to detect heats and more closely monitor herd health. Two years after putting the monitoring system in place, the Marshiks built a manure pit and an outdoor lot for dry cows and heifers. The Marshiks watched
expenses and prioritized their purchasing decisions. The Marshiks continued to do all the farm labor themselves and shared eldwork equipment with Jill’s parents.
Seibels win outstanding young farmer award In 2019, Adam and Chrissy Seibel received the 2019 Wisconsin Outstanding Young Farmer award for their hard work on their organic dairy farm near Bloomer, Wisconsin. The Seibels became certied organic in 2001. In 2011, the Seibels made another jump on their farm by installing a robotic milking system. With not many other organic farmers to get ideas from, at the time, the Seibels looked for ideas from overseas. After two years of getting tips from farms in Europe who grazed their cattle, the family was ready to make the leap. Once the system was installed, they also had to nd ways for the robot to be able to handle organic products. Winter poses threats to animal health As winter approached, Sam Zimmermann, of Ringle, Wisconsin, started preparing his 225-cow herd and facilities. Zimmermann housed cows in a 3-row freestall barn and bedded pack. He also had another bedded pack for breeding-age heifers, close-up dry cows and pregnant animals. Far-off dry cows were outwintered. Zimmermann said cows are able to do well in all kinds of weather, if they are provided with the correct housing and rations for the season. Zimmermann made a windbreak out of silage bales for the cows that were outwintered to help protect them from the elements. He also had his nutri-
tionist adjust the rations to ensure his cattle were getting enough energy throughout the winter. Also, with the cold weather, Zimmermann provided the cows with extra ration so that there was always feed available.

Patience pays off for Rusches The long-awaited dream of Patrick and Rachel Rusch became a reality in 2014. Patrick knew that he always wanted to dairy farm, but his parents sold their cows in 2001, so Patrick had to nd his own way. Working at a crop farm for 12 years, Patrick was able to save up enough money to buy and x up a farm. Prior to getting the farm xed up, Patrick and Rachel bought cows and housed them at neighbors’ farms. After the barn stalls were redone, along with the milkhouse and adding a utility room to the barn, the Rusches moved their herd home to be milked for the rst time in their new home. Leaving it up to fate When Corbin Rhodes started looking for help on the farm, he never expected to meet his future wife. After Rhodes’ dad, who also was on the farm, underwent open-heart surgery, Rhodes needed someone to help while his dad recovered. When Rhodes went to the local feed mill, someone suggested he call Amber. Amber started working at the farm in March 2011, and by May, they were dating. One night in December 2012, while Amber was doing chores, Rhodes asked her to talk a walk with him. The walk ended in a marriage proposal. The Rhodes both said that it was fate that brought them together.

Lindo dairy thrives in a changing environment Farming had become a harder task for the Lindo family of Center City, Minnesota. With more housing developments being built, they found themselves surrounded on three sides by houses in 2004. Lowell and Kathy, along with their kids, Jeff and Diane, had a herd of 40 milking cows. They started milking three times a day in 1990 with the hope the cows would be more comfortable. Between going to three milkings and switching to a total mixed ration, the Lindos noticed an improvement in production and quality of milk. Improving their herd was the only option the Lindos had if they wanted to keep farming, since they were unable to expand. On top of what they changed, they also started working more with the genetics of their herd. A productive expansion In Caledonia, Minnesota, Mike Ingvalson decided to expand his 80-cow dairy farm. The plan consisted of four phases, which included building new free stalls, adding mattresses and nding what the cows enjoyed. Before Ingvalson started the project, his rolling herd average was 22,000 pounds. After the facility was done, the RHA was at 30,000 pounds. Ingvalson said that making sure each cow was cool, clean and comfortable helped him better the farm. One way to ensure his cattle were comfortable was by only putting 36 cows into a 42-stall freestall barn. Once the project was complete, Ingvalson was milking 330 cows.
