In August of 2013, 4,913 new WVU students arrived in Morgantown for their first year of college. They helped make the student body of WVU’s 2013-14 main campus one of the most diverse its ever seen. Not every one of these students will walk away with a diploma this month; some have transferred, others may have graduated early or will late and some we’ve lost to unfortunate circumstances. The class of 2017 has witnessed a lot of WVU history. We were the first to experience the true meaning of “culture change”as it relates to WVU and the full college experience. The past four years have been defined by change; from cultural to structural to social. Many were good and some bad (I’ll never forget you Sunnyside Superette), and this special edition is a look back at a little bit of both. For the rest of your life you will be a part of an international community of those proudly bearing the Old Gold and Blue. When you leave Morgantown, remember the moments in the last four years that made you happy. Be proud of these moments and the people who made them possible. Stay connected to this University, stay educated on what’s going on around this campus and—if you have the opportunity—reach out to support the future generations of Mountaineers. None of us would be where we are today without a little help along the way. So graduates, congratulations on this accomplishment. Before you continue on to your next chapter, join The DA in a look back at the four years that led to you turning your tassel. And remember, it’s a great day to be a Mountaineer wherever you may be.

WHAT YOU

CHEERED FOR The last four years hasn’t been only tests and term papers. You let your hair down some (we saw you!) had fun and felt proud to be a Mountaineer. Here are some of the things that you made you happy while you were here:

MAY 2017

Gee returns for another run (2013) Gee was only 37 when he presided over WVU the first time (from 1981 to 1985) and a seasoned 69 when he returned. There were stops at the University of Colorado, Brown University, Vanderbilt University and two stops at Ohio State in between. We were glad to get him back.

WHAT YOU CHEERED FOR | 7

Evansdale Crossing opens (2015) In November, the first phase of the crossing opened with Taziki’s, Little Donkey, Collo Rosso Pizza and Hugh Baby’s. Provost Joyce McConnell said at the time the new building “will be a physical embodiment of WVU’s commitment to the whole student and to innovation.” Not sure about all that but the ribs are good.

Mon County Ballpark opens (2015) The Jamestown Jammers of the NY-Penn Short season A-League became the Black Bears in June at one of the nicest parks in the nation. Not only was it comfortable and convenient, the 2,500-seat park offers pepperoni rolls and $7 cups of local craft beers.

First snow day in five years (2014) Deep enough for good sledding down the back side of Woodburn, this long-awaited sno-cation was especially welcome.

Kendrick Lamar performs at Fall Fest (2014) To mark the 20th Fall Fest, WVU hosted Kendrick Lamar, Dierks Bently and Magic! Lamar, who had a sold-out concert in Morgantown in 2012, was paid $300,000 to rock at the free event, the next-to-the-last one at the Mountainlair.

Brad Paisley performs at WVU (2016) Not only did the WV native come and sing for two hours, he did it in a free outdoor concert up on the Law School hill. And if you missed it, it was released as a PBS special and DVD, “Life Amplified World Tour: Live from WVU.”

WVU 41 — No. 4 Baylor 27 (2014)

Basketball returns to the Sweet 16 (2017)

It was the college football upset of the year. And we were maybe a little too excited afterword with a couple flaming couches and downed lampposts. Tear gas and police helped curb the enthusiasm.

The Mountaineers knocked off the 5-seed Notre Dame Fighting Irish by a score of 83-71 to advance to the regional semifinal, where they fell to the Gonzaga Bulldogs in heartbreaking fashion.

8 | A LETTER FROM PRESIDENT GEE

MAY 2017

from

THE

PRESIDENT’S desk

Dear Class of 2017: Congratulations on reaching the finale of your college career—graduation. You conquered mind-bending exams, endured all-nighters at the library and read more words than Tolstoy could pack into all of his novels. This is a time for well-earned celebration. But, like a long-awaited TV season finale, you may find that graduation poses more questions than it answers. Above all, you wonder: What now? I still remember donning my own cap and gown some 49 years ago and wondering where my college degree could take me. Stepping out into the unknown is never easy, and your path will undoubtedly take unexpected detours. Trust me, life delivers its share of unpleasant surprises. I have faced them myself – from professional hurdles to personal losses. But, like true Mountaineers, we go on. And the compass that guides you in the right direction will be your core Mountaineer values. Use your knowledge and skills to serve others and make lives better. Keep your mind and heart open to learning new things and maintain a child-like curiosity about the world-around you. Respect others’ viewpoints even when you do not agree with them.

Respect yourself enough to give your very best effort, all the time. And appreciate the sacrifices family, mentors and previous generations’ pioneers made to open opportunities to you. You may feel alone sometimes. You may struggle about what to do next and how to survive in this often chaotic world. But you are never really alone: You are taking the fellowship of 190,000 other West Virginia University graduates with you. So, in the words of author Edward Abbey: “May your trails be crooked, winding, lonesome, dangerous, leading to the most amazing view. May your mountains rise into and above the clouds.” Today, enjoy the view from this lofty plateau. Tomorrow, it is time to start climbing higher. Let’s go.

E. Gordon Gee

President, West Virginia University

10 | FOUR YEARS OF SGA

MAY 2017

Of the students By the students For the students

Like many things at WVU, a lot has changed for SGA over the last four years. There have been highs and lows for each administration (some perhaps worse than others) but structurally and organizationally the SGA we see today is not the SGA we were introduced to as freshman—and not just because new people hold the seats. As SGA struggled with student participation, Julie Merow was elected for the 2016-17 school year after an uncontested election. One of her first actions as President was to completely reform SGA. Merow added an entirely new legislative branch—the student representatives—to better represent students from individual colleges across campus. The Board of Governors is now the Student Senate, and the entire legislative branch is the Student Assembly. The last four years have held many firsts for the student-run legislative body, and while you may not have always noticed, here is a look back at some of the people who shaped your last four years on campus.

Changes to SGA since 2013 March 2014: Nyden’s BOG modifies elections code to allow write-ins to run as “official” SGA candidates

March 2015: Days before the 2015 SGA election, straightticket voting is introduced for the first—and only—time. It was one of many highly criticized aspects of a contentious election, with three tickets competing.

March 2016:

Straight-ticket voting is removed from SGA

elections.

April 2016: Merow’s administration holds a special election where students vote on restructuring SGA completely. All amendments passed, introducing college representatives as a new legislative body within the organization, among other things.

The new guys: “Let’s Talk”

A letter from outgoing President Julie Merow: Dear Class of 2017,

Let me start by saying congratulations on all of your accomplishments in and out of the classroom during your time at West Virginia University. I hope you are leaving our campus knowing that you worked hard, made strong connections and achieved the goals you had when you arrived. The possibilities for your future and your career are essentially endless, and you have gained the tools, skills and the relationships at WVU to help ensure your success. Our marathon to graduation has been no easy task at times. College is an unpredictable, exciting race to the finish and can bring STAFF PHOTO about many hurdles. You are graduating this May because you have overcome whatever In March 2017, you helped elect Blake Humphrey and Shannon Smith as student body pres- hurdles were in your way and made it to the ident and vice president respectively for the 2017-18 school year. While this was yet another finish- something not everyone can do, beuncontested election, Humphrey’s campaign relied on getting WVU students to talk about ob- lieve it or not. stacles they face on campus, as well as getting them more involved in SGA. As we graduate, regardless of the next steps

we choose to take, we will leave here with an important and respected connection to Morgantown and the University. This connection is worth more than a lot of students and even alums realize. It is your key to having a piece of the pie in the future of WVU and its Alumni Association. Whether you are searching for a job, moving onto graduate or professional school, or waiting for life to steer you in the right direction, your connection to and appreciation for West Virginia University will continue to increase. I hope you have greatly enjoyed your time here, are anxious to move forward and know that once you’re a Mountaineer, you’re always a Mountaineer. Best of luck, congratulations and thank you to our graduating class for a wonderful four years at West Virginia University.

A section of University Avenue that connects the Evansdale Campus to the Downtown Campus wasn’t open by the time thousands of students returned to West Virginia University in the fall. The city, in a Wednesday press release, said “weather delays and utility relocations” kept the proj-

ect from being completed by move-in weekend. Crews blocked off University Avenue from Overhill Street to Fourth Street to try and lower the steep incline where University Avenue meets Third Street. “If you remember, it rained 20-some days in June,” said Damien Davis, Morgantown’s public works director. “That limited us to how much we could do.” But the contract wasn’t

awarded to a construction crew until June 24, Davis later said, and the road wasn’t blocked off for major work until July 6. “I guess the rain in June really didn’t have an effect on this project,” Davis said. “We had other projects in June that got delayed because of the rain.” One of those projects was replacing City Hall and the fire station’s roof. Although the city’s release points to Aug. 14 as the project’s original completion date, Davis said the contract says “substantial completion” of the project should be finished by

Aug. 24. Then, the project should be completely finished in 30 days. “It’s not really delayed because we haven’t got to our Aug. 24 deadline,” Davis said. “We always had the goal to open up University Avenue come August when students move in, but with utility work, we have not had the time to get as much work done on the road as we’d like to.” Once utility lines are replaced, which Davis said should be sometime next week, crews will be-

Cheers, Beards and

Mountaineers The Mountaineer is a staple to this University. The Buckskins are an honor, and those who are chosen to wear them do not take the responsibility lightly. In the last four years we’ve watched three different Mountaineers lead us through cheer offs, drop to push-up position on the football field and fire off the musket. These three—Jonathan Kimble, Michael Garcia and Troy Clemons—have been responsible for representing WVU to the Mountain State over the last four years. When they weren’t away

at football or basketball games, helping at fundraisers or attending class, they were visiting secondary schools across the state to help recruit the next generation of Mountaineers to WVU. The Mountaineer is perhaps the most recognizable symbol for WVU, and it is revered throughout the state. These three have worn the Buckskins and carried the rifle proudly, and odds are a few of your favorite memories at WVU involve at least one of them, so here is a look back at the past four years of Mountaineers:

2013

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Pretty Lig ght hs Ciiara Capital Cities Colt Ford

Four years of FallFest Every year, Fallfest kicks off what some consider to be the funnest week of the school year—syllabus week. It’s a staple of WVU; a huge, free concert with famous headliners and 30,000 of your closest friends. In the last four years, a lot has changed for the annual festival. Starting in 2015 with Schoolboy Q, FallFest changed from being on the first day of classes (did anyone go to class this day?) to the Sunday before. The time also moved up to discourage so much late night activity, but in a city like Morgantown, there is only so much you can do.

The biggest changes came in 2016, when FallFest was moved from the Mountainlair Green to the CPASS parking lot on Evansdale. Unrelated to the venue change, 2016’s FallFest also stood out do to the evacuation of the parking lot because of a storm. Students from FallFest and FoodFest (a culinary aspect of the event introduced in 2015) were ushered to the Rec Center to wait out the storm. While the concert proceeded following the evacuation, it still felt different from FallFest’s before. Here is a look back at FallFest during your time at WVU.
