Shiarly: haircut was not on table It was raised at an informal meeting but then withdrawn by the troika, former minister tells inquiry By Elias Hazou

N

EITHER the banks nor the government were aware of the extent to which the Greek haircut would damage Cyprus and “could not and did not take any measures” through negotiations to limit the consequences, former Finance Minister Vassos Shiarly said yesterday. Shiarly was testifying before the committee of inquiry that is probing the circumstances leading up to the ‘bail-in’ of Cyprus’ two largest banks where he also spoke of the previous administration’s track record of deficit spending; saying that while expenditure grew by approximately €1bn a year, revenues were consistently dropping. During the course of 2012, Shiarly said, he had alerted former President Demetris Christofias to this; the latter assured him his government would take measures to bring the deficit down to below 3 per cent of GDP, as per the European Commission’s demands. When it came to the haircut on bank deposits, Shiarly also said it was never put on the table while he was in office. “What was discussed was a haircut on the banks’ securities, an issue on which we raised objections,” he said. Only once did the troika broach the subject of a hair-

cut, he said, in December 2012, but this happened during the course of an ‘informal’ meeting. Subsequently, the troika team itself withdrew the idea, deeming it potentially disastrous for the Cypriot economy, said Shiarly. But documents in the public domain appear to repudiate Shiarly. The first memorandum concluded with the troika (November 2012) contains an oblique yet unmistakeable reference to a ‘bail-in’ of depositors. Paragraph 1.19 of the MoU states: “The authorities will introduce legislation establishing a comprehensive framework for the recovery and resolution of credit institutions, drawing inter alia on the relevant proposal of the European Commission.” The EC proposal (dated June 6, 2012) cited clearly refers to ‘bail-in’ as a method of recapitalising stricken lenders, and was the formula used in March in dealing with the two largest Cypriot banks. Moreover, the same paragraph goes on to say: “The framework will be subject to consultation with the EC, the ECB and the IMF and will enter into force by [endJanuary 2013]. The Central Bank of Cyprus will become the single resolution authority for banks and cooperative credit institutions. “The new resolution legal

British children already in the habit of saving up By Vicky Shaw BRITISH children as young as 10 are already saving up for ‘key milestones’ in their lives such as university, buying their first home or starting a business, a report found yesterday. The tough economy has produced a generation of financially savvy children, many of whom are more ‘switched on’ to savings than their parents were at the same age, investment provider Scottish Widows found. With the prospect of university tuition fees and a typical 20% deposit cur-

rently put down by first-time house buyers, 11% of children said that they have already begun saving towards the cost of college, university, or buying a home. A further 6% said they are saving up for a car - while 2% of entrepreneurial children said they are putting money aside to start their own business. However, toys, games and gadgets remain children’s savings priorities, with 48% of youngsters saving up for this purpose. Some 98% of 10-year-olds said they have already got into the habit of putting some of their cash away for

a rainy day, while just 15% of adults surveyed said they had started saving before the age of 15. The majority of children who regularly receive pocket money said they get between £5 and £9 a week. Most children said that they save a portion of this cash, although 10% put all of it away. The report suggested that the economic downturn has had an impact on children’s savings habits. Publicity around the Government’s landmark efforts to automatically enrol people into workplace pensions and encourage people into a lifelong savings habit may also be having an effect.

CYPRUS TODAY ‘Hellim’ appeal rejected by EU Court

More people are asking for Cypriot products this year

THE COURT of Justice of the European Union has rejected an appeal lodged by the Cyprus Dairy Industry Organisation against the judgment of the General Court of the European Union in connection to halloumi cheese. The organisation is the holder of the community collective trade mark “Halloumi.” In 2005, German company Garmo AG applied for the Community trade mark “Hellim” for dairy products. Hellim is what Turkish Cypriots call halloumi. The Cypriot organisation filed a notice of opposition to that application which was rejected by the Board of Appeal of the Office for Harmonisation in the Internal Market (OHIM). The organisation then appealed to the General Court, which on June 13, 2012, upheld the decision by OHIM. The organisation then demanded from the Court of Justice the reversal of the General Court’s decision, arguing that the General Court had incorrectly applied a regulation on community trademark by not acknowledging the market impact of the visual and phonetic similarities of “hellim” and “halloumi.” In its ruling, the Court of Justice said it can reverse prior decisions on legal points only. However, it added, the appeal lodged by the Cypriot organisation sought to contest the substance of the original dispute, which was not its purview.

A hot Easter before cooling down

THE PRICE of Cypriot products has fallen by around 25 per cent as demand rises for Easter Sunday celebrations. Agriculture Minister, Nicos Kouyialis said yesterday, calling on consumers to show preference for local goods. The minister was speaking while on a tour of Nicosia supermarkets to check out Easter products. “Prices are very competitive and as I’ve been informed they are down twenty-five per cent in comparison to last year,” he said. There has been an increase in demand for Cypriot products in the run-up to Easter Sunday with sales reaching satisfactory levels according to the director of the Pancyprian Association of Supermarkets, Andreas Hadjiadamou. He told the Cyprus Mail that he believes that despite the difficulties faced by households, this week sales would be boosted by Easter celebrations. “We have noticed in general that people have begun to show a preference for Cypriot products, in comparison of course to other years,” Hadjiadamou said. He added that the move by consumers to choose local products and to use Cypriot businesses more was a positive move to help the market get back on its feet. “Foreign products have also been sold as local products

can’t cover all of the consumer’s needs but we can assure them that the local products they do purchase are of the highest quality at the best possible prices,” Hadjiadamou said. Despite reports that some supermarkets had experienced difficulties with importers due to the capital restriction, Hadjiadamou said business had not been badly affected and that imported goods were making their way onto supermarket shelves as usual. “Sales have been satisfactory so far and possibly good considering the circumstances as people have had to go out and buy the products they will need for this weekend’s Easter celebrations,” he concluded. These views were confirmed by manager of Alpha Mega supermarket in Engomi, Andreas Avraamides, who said there had been a definite increase in sales and business since Wednesday. “Customers are definitely asking for Cypriot products more than before, especially fruit and vegetables,” he said. Avraamides added that he believed taking into consideration the current state of affairs and the public’s mood in light of recent events that business has been very good. “On May 1 business started picking up as people are shopping for their Easter Sunday meal and we believe that Friday and Saturday will be very busy,” he added. General Manager of the

SUMMER appears to have come early with temperatures running 7-8 degrees above normal for this time of the year . And, the mid-thirties highs being experienced all this week are likely to run into the weekend, making it a sunny Easter for outdoors’ activities and souvla making before temperatures begin to return to normal levels as of Monday. According to the met office, temperatures reached a high of 36C on May Day (Wednesday). “The average temperatures for this time of year is 22 to 28 degrees. This year the maximum temperature on May 1 was 36 degrees,” said a meteorological officer who added that today would also be around 35C. During the weekend temperatures will begin to go down. “We expect temperatures to start going down to 34 degrees over the weekend and as of Monday they will drop a little further,” the meteorological officer added.

Costly arson attack on rental cars Easter shopping is going well Metro supermarket chain, Peter Kyprianides told the Cyprus Mail that efforts had been made to promote local products in recent weeks but that the government needed to step up their campaigns for Cypriot products too. “During the crisis the public will inevitably look at what is more affordable and they will compare prices which means that local products need to come down in price if they want to sell more,” he said. Kyprianides added that he believed that due to the fact that Cyprus is a former colony, over the years a certain amount of brand loyalty to

(Christos Theodorides) foreign goods had been created. “Certain consumers have the impression that foreign products are better and along with our efforts, which are insufficient, we believe that the government needs to create a campaign to promote local products regardless of any EU directives,” he added. “As far as an increase in Cypriot products selling more recently, it’s difficult to say without looking at the figures but as far as I am aware Greek lamb has not been imported for Easter, meaning there has been exclusivity for Cyprus lamb this year,” Kyprianides said.

SIX luxury rental cars were gutted by fire at around 5.45am on Wednesday in Limassol at a cost of around €1 million. According to Limassol CID chief Ioannis Soteriades the fire was an arson attack. The tenants of the building next door to the car rental company had to vacate the building until the fire was put out as a precaution. The owner of the car rental company does not suspect anyone who may have wanted to destroy the cars. The vehicles were parked outside a car rental company on the seaside road of Ayios Tychonas. Police also suspect that a car that was set alight in the same area about 15 minutes later may also be related to this case. The fire destroyed the car and investigations showed it was also an arson attack.

Port workers stage 24-hour strike over cuts in benefits LIMASSOL port workers yesterday staged a 24-hour warning strike over a proposal to cut their benefits, including half their 14th salary and overtime pay. The around 60 porters reject a mediating proposal tabled by the labour ministry “because it affected basic benefits like their provident fund, bonuses” and other advantages. The strike caused substantial delays in the service to the public. The proposal provided for a freeze in wages,

a cut in the employer’s contribution to the provident fund from 7.0 per cent to 1.0 per cent, cutting 14th salaries (Easter bonus) by half and reducing overtime pay from triple to double the hourly rate. Their employers are the 68 licensed porters, who make up the Limassol Licensed Porters Association. Unlike the 13th salary paid out at Christmas, a 14th salary, for those who receive it, is usually half an employee’s monthly pay. “The association did not give the raise pro-

vided for in the collective agreement and subsequently asked for more cuts in benefits,” a SEK trade union representative said yesterday, as the strikers demonstrated outside the Limassol port entrance. Titos Timotheou said the porters had accepted a meditating proposal made by the labour ministry but it had been rejected by their employers. The second proposal was in turn rejected by the porters who were yesterday threatening to

escalate their industrial action. The porters said they will apply a work-torule policy until Wednesday when they will meet to decide their next steps. Andreas Charilaou, chairman of the licensed porters association, suggested that the measures were unnecessary. Labour disputes should be resolved through dialogue and not strikes, he said, urging porters, who enjoy generous benefits, to accept the mediating proposal.

A May Day of recriminations Jobless rate rises and politicians use events to dish out the blame By Maria Gregoriou THE May Day holiday in Cyprus this year was shrouded in doom and gloom with more bad news on the unemployment front, and political parties mudslinging over who was to blame for ruining the country. According to Eurostat, Cyprus recorded the second highest unemployment increase in the EU in March during which the jobless rate increased in 19 EU countries and fell only in eight. Compared to March 2012, the highest increase in March this year were recorded in Greece 27.2 per cent, up from 21.5 per cent in the same month last year. In Cyprus, the figure jumped from 10.7 per cent in March 2012 to 14.2 per cent in March this year. Meanwhile unions and politicians used their May Day messages to play the blame game. Leading the charge, AKEL leader Andros Kyprianou said that ruling DISY’s finger pointing at former President Demetris Christofias was uncalled for. “The statements from European officials in recent months confirms our view that the Cypriot economy’s

The May Day parade passing outside the offices of left-wing union PEO in Nicosia on Wednesday problems were to do with the size of the banking system, a lack of control and wrong decision making,” he said but he did not mean wrong decision-making by then ruling AKEL. “Nicos Anastasiades, DISY and their supporters should not pretend that they were not aware of the magnitude of the economic problems. They knew very well what was going on, they just chose to consciously cover for and support former governors and bankers,” said Kyprianou. “Neither should they pretend that we all share the blame and this is why we should all pay. population, whose life savings vanished. It was not the fault of the working population who suddenly find themselves unemployed. It was the former governor of the central bank who made the decisions.” But SEK union deputy secretary Andreas Matsas did criticise the government of Demetris Christofias for its incompetence and procrastination in dealing promptly and effectively with the problems which lead to the current situation. “If some people during the last few months had looked a little further than their noses, and had

put Cyprus first instead of their political interests, we would not need troika nor would we need to borrow money,” Matsas said. “We demand those who are to blame be punished for the bank blowout,” he added. Matsas presented the Archbishop with a cheque for €10,000 in an attempt to help the Church in their efforts to support the needy. The Archbishop said this was a symbolic gesture and a godsend. “The powerful message of Labour Day is more relevant today than ever before, especially during these difficult economic times which are the outcome of economic mistakes and bad decisions made over the last few years. These mistakes have sealed the cruel fate of the simple working people,” DISY deputy head Lefteris Christoforou said. Christoforou said DISY

support the efforts of workers to secure their jobs and fight for their survival and for their families. “Now that the percentage of unemployment is growing daily, people from third countries should not be employed to replace Cypriot workers.” Referring to the approval of the bailout deal, Christoforou said that the economic and political choices made during the five-year leadership of AKEL were to blame. “We had essentially voted on a bailout deal that was agreed upon by AKEL and was improved by some changes made by the government of Nicos Anastasiadis. A negative answer would have led to bankruptcy, a positive answer gave us the chance to save what was salvageable,” he said. (see editorial page 13)

Vgenopoulos hearing adjourned until next month A PAPHOS court yesterday upheld a pre-trial motion by former Laiki Bank strongman Andreas Vgenopoulos that a charge sheet relating to a fraud case had been improperly delivered. Andreas Vgenopoulos and former Laiki CEO Efthimios Bouloutas, both Greek nationals, have been sued by a Paphos man who claims investors had been misled into buying high-risk securities. Their lawyers raised a pretrial objection suggesting that the papers had been delivered under the provisions of the Schengen Agreement, which Cyprus had not ratified. The court adjourned for June 26, provided that the documents would be delivered to the two men in the proper manner. Claiming he was defrauded of €108,000, a Paphos-based man has filed a private criminal case against the Laiki as a legal entity, the bank’s former brass, and former Central Bank (CBC) governor, Athanasios Orphanides. He is one of hundreds of depositors who claim they were misled by the banks into putting their savings in high-yield securities. He claims the defendants had falsely stated that the securities would fetch highyields knowing that this was untrue. The total amount put in securities is said to be around €1.4 billion.

Home Banks now have access to collateral

Shiarly: deposit haircut was not put on the table Tax chief also testifies at inquiry, saying work has tripled but staffing reduced (continued from front page) framework will aim, inter alia, to allow the Central Bank of Cyprus to mandate the sale of some or all of the assets and liabilities of an institution under resolution through a public tender process and to enforce writedown or conversion of Tier I and Tier II instruments into equity, also in the context of a recapitalisation with state aid.” The above indicates that not only had Cyprus agreed to a haircut as far back as November, but had also agreed to draft legislation “in consultation” with the troika of international lenders. Shiarly, who served as finance minister from March 2012 to February 2013, went on to say that neither the banks nor the government had initially realised the consequences of the eurozone’s decision in the summer of 2011 to restructure Greek debt. Cypriot banks, heavily exposed to Greek bonds, are estimated to have sustained over €4bn in losses as a result of the Greek debt writedown, or PSI. Shiarly, who was not in office when the Greek PSI was decided, said Cyprus at the time had gone along with the decision. Cyprus then had the op-

portunity to negotiate trade-offs for rubberstamping the PSI, but did not do so. Neither had any studies been done to assess the impact of Greek debt restructuring on the Cypriot banks and economy in general, he added. Shiarly, under whose stint the state underwrote €1.8bn in funds for Laiki to prevent the bank from collapsing, said the lender was unable to recapitalize on its own. In the event the bank went under, the state would have been obliged to compensate all insured depositors. But the government simply did not have the €8bn to €10bn needed to compensate these depositors, nor could it borrow the money.

TOTAL DISASTER Moreover, had the Bank of Cyprus failed as well, the state would have had to raise an additional €13bn to compensate BoC’s insured depositors, something that would have meant “total disaster,” Shiarly said. Shiarly will be re-appearing before the committee on May 17. The inquiry is currently focusing on fiscal and economic actions by the state ahead of the Eurogroup in March that decided the deposits haircut. The panel is tasked with investigating

civil, criminal and political responsibilities; its findings are not binding. Also testifying yesterday, Inland Revenue Department (IRD) head Giorgos Poufos bemoaned the department’s depleted ability to collect taxes over the last few years. While work has tripled from collecting €423.8m ten years ago, the taxman is now responsible for scooping up €1.1 billion in taxes every year. And while work has increased, staff numbers had dropped, he said. In the year 2002, the department employed 62 tax collectors; by 2013 there were only 35. Time and time again, Poufos said his department made recommendations for both legislative and administrative improvements, but the response from the state was “minimal,” he said. Over the past decade, the IRD has collected a total of some €17.5bn. It is currently owed around €600m, not including interest. Subtracting unrecoverable taxes from this figure yields €400m. Asked how many persons, legal or natural, owed over €100,000, Poufos said that as of March 31 this year there were 396 such cases, adding that 87.62 per cent of them were being pursued by legal means.

Former Finance Minister Vassos Shiarly steps on to the podium at yesterday’s hearing (Christos Theodorides)

THE European Central Bank (ECB) announced yesterday that it would start accepting debt issued by Cyprus in exchange for credit, following the bailout deal struck with international lenders. The decision basically means that banks now have access to more collateral that can be exchanged for cheaper liquidity than the one offered by the ECB’s Emergency Liquidity Fund (ELA). “Marketable debt instruments issued or fully guaranteed by the Republic of Cyprus and fulfilling all other eligibility criteria shall again constitute eligible collateral for the purposes of Eurosystem credit operations, subject to special haircuts,” the ECB said. The ECB said it was suspending the application of the minimum credit rating threshold in the collateral eligibility requirements in the case of marketable debt instruments issued or guaranteed by the Cypriot government. “This suspension will be maintained until further notice,” the ECB said. The suspension applies to all outstanding and new marketable debt instruments issued or guaranteed by the Cypriot government and will come into force with the relevant legal act on 9 May 2013. The haircuts applied to these assets are specified in the legal act. The ECB stopped accepting Cypriot bonds in June 2012, when the last of the three main ratings agency downgraded its sovereign rating to junk. In the decision, the ECB’s Governing Council had taken into consideration the Memorandum of Understanding concluded between Cyprus and the European Commission and endorsed by the member states.

Home Two injured at building site TWO MEN, a Greek-Pontian and a Georgian, were rescued by the fire service yesterday after a wall collapsed on them at a building site near the old GSZ Stadium in Larnaca. It took firemen 45 minutes to free the Georgian man from the debris. Deputy direct of the fire service, Marcos Trangolas said that around 1pm, Larnaca fire station received reports that a wall had collapsed, trapping two people. The disaster response squad (EMAK) vehicle and Larnaca’s fire service rescue vehicle were both called into action. “After arriving on the scene, members of the service established that one of the two men had been trapped under a large cement beam which had collapsed as part of the site’s structure,” Trangolas said. “Superhuman efforts were made and after around 45 minutes the injured man was freed from the debris,” he added. Both men were then taken to Larnaca General Hospital by an ambulance. Larnaca Police spokesman, Christos Andreou said the men were not seriously injured. Labour inspectors are looking into the accident

Closer ties with Israel high on state’s agenda President Anastasiades to meet Netanyahu on Sunday in Jerusalem By Poly Pantelides DEEPENING ties with Tel Aviv is one of the most important initiatives the government is undertaking, President Nicos Anastasiades said yesterday ahead of a scheduled visit to Israel. “The aim is to begin a to-the-point dialogue that can lead to collaboration between the two countries that will benefit both peoples in many areas, among them of course the exploitation of natural resources,” Anastasiades said. Anastasiades said there was room for closer collaboration in other areas that could prove to be mutually beneficial to both countries. He cited Cyprus’ strategic geographical position and its European Union membership as capable of assisting closer relationships with other countries, including Greece. Anastasiades previously said that Cyprus was pinning its hopes for economic recovery on its natural gas. “The prudent exploitation of hydrocarbon resources has been set at the cornerstone of our policy,” Anastasiades

said during an address at the Eastern Mediterranean Gas Conference. Appraisal drilling at the Aphrodite prospect is expected to be carried out in June by Noble Energy. Cyprus plans to build a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant to use Cyprus’ natural gas and potentially from other eastern Mediterranean reserves for export. Noble CEO Charles Davidson visited Israel last month to mark the start of gas flow from Israel’s Tamar field. Israeli media said that he also intended to help persuade the Israel government to allow gas exports. Shaul Tzemach, director general of Israel’s ministry of energy and water resources, was quoted by the Jerusalem Post as saying, Israel could satisfy domestic industry needs while allocating up to 500 billion cubic metres of natural gas for exports. The proposal made last autumn by a committee Tzemach headed was met with resistance by groups wanting to preserve the gas for home usage, the Jerusalem Post said. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu apologised last month to Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdog-

an for a 2010 raid on a Turkish ship trying to reach Gaza, which resulted in the death of nine Turkish activists. The apology, seemingly raising the prospect of energy collaboration between the two countries raised questions for Cyprus’ own plans. Turkey has issued a number of warnings and threats against companies collaborating with Cyprus in the energy field. Commerce Minister Giorgos Lakkotrypis who paid a visit to Israel recently said that Israel’s apology was anticipated, while Israeli ambassador to Cyprus Michael Harari told the Cyprus News Agency yesterday that Israel’s relations with Turkey would not alter their collaboration with Cyprus. “The relationship between Israel and Cyprus, as it currently stands, could serve as a model of collaboration between countries with common values and interests,” Harari said. In addition to energy matters, the two countries are expected to discuss trade and tourism. Bilateral trade between the two countries stood at €715 million in 2012, making Israel the second largest exporter to Cyprus, Harari said.

Travelling to Israel yesterday ahead of Anastasiades, Defence Minister Fotis Fotiou met with his Israeli counterpart Moshe Ya’alon to discuss, among others, security in the energy field. On his trip the President will be accompanied by the commerce minister, the government spokesman and other officials. According to an official announcement, the President departed last night on a private visit to Jerusalem, to attend Orthodox Easter functions. On Sunday, he meets with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem, while on Monday he will visit the Knesset and meet with the President of the House, Yudi Edelstain. Earlier on Monday, he will lay a wreath at the Yad Vashem holocaust memorial. On Tuesday, President Anastasiades will meet with Theophilos III, Patriarch of the Holy City of Jerusalem and all Palestine. Later on the same day, Israel’s President Shimon Peres will host an official banquet in his honour. The President will also address a Cyprus -Israeli business forum and the University in Tel Aviv.

A 21-YEAR-OLD from Larnaca was taken to hospital yesterday after injuring himself with fireworks, one of which backfired, burning his face, his left hand, and bruising his left eye, police said. The young man was trying to set-off the fireworks opposite the Faneromeni Church in Larnaca where the traditional ‘Lambradja’ bonfire was being prepared for tomorrow night. Larnaca Police spokesman Christos Andreou told reporters that around 1am yesterday, officers were informed that the 21-yearold had been taken to the emergency department at Larnaca hospital. “On-duty doctors examined him and ascertained he had suffered burns to his face and left hand as well as bruising to his left eye,” Andreou said. The young man was kept in hospital during the day for observation. “From initial investigations it is believed that he was burnt on the face and on his hand after his attempts to set-off fireworks, which backfired,” Andreou added. The spokesman explained that although the firecracker had been made from permitted materials, it had not been used in accordance with the instructions. “The wrong use of these devices can result in the loss of fingers, severe injuries and in some circumstances death,” he said. “We call on everyone to be careful and refrain from using these sorts of dangerous items which can endanger people’s lives.” In a statement released yesterday, police spokesman Andreas Angelides, called on the public to celebrate Easter for “the real reasons” and not in an attempt to show off. “Our goal is to protect young people but also not to mourn any loss of life,” Angelides said. As far as traditional ‘lambradja’ bonfires are concerned, Angelides said the police had met with the fire service and local and church authorities in all districts to check that none were being illegally gathered. Every year a number of injuries are reported on the island, in the run-up to Easter, as youngsters attempt to outdo their pears by building big bonfires and set off extravagant firecrackers.

‘Greeks only’ food handout blocked By Karolina Tagaris GREECE’S anti-immigrant Golden Dawn party scuffled with police who stopped them distributing food exclusively to Greeks in Athens’ central square yesterday, ahead of the Greek Orthodox Easter holiday on May 5. Television footage showed Golden Dawn members in their trademark black t-shirts hitting riot police on the head with rolled up Greek flags after being prevented from unloading eggs, bread, lamb to hand out in Syntagma Square. Police responded with a brief burst of teargas. Athens Mayor George Kaminis had banned the far-right party from conducting the handout in the square in front of parliament, calling it a “soup kitchen of hatred” because

only those with a Greek identity card were eligible to receive food. “Democracy will prevail,” said Kaminis. “Today the logic of violence, of thuggery, of ‘having my way’ was beaten.” The party went ahead with the handout outside its offices, where hundreds gathered to collect potatoes and red Easter eggs.

WEAPON ACCUSATIONS Kaminis said a Golden Dawn lawmaker later tried to hit him but missed. Police confirmed they led away a Golden Dawn lawmaker who moved “menacingly” against the mayor, and said they are investigating accusations the lawmaker produced a weapon. Golden Dawn rose from obscurity last year on a fiercely anti-immigrant and anti-corruption agenda, tapping

into popular anger over austerity measures demanded by the country’s lenders and fears of rising crime. Greeks have seen their living standards crumble as the country faces its sixth year of recession that has driven unemployment to record highs. Steep cuts to wages and pensions demanded by the European Union and International Monetary Fund in return for the bailout funds keeping the economy afloat have left many unable to make ends meet. Opinion polls indicate Golden Dawn would be the third biggest party in Greece if elections were held now. The party, whose leader denies the Holocaust and whose members have been seen giving Nazi-style salutes, denies it is neo-Nazi as alleged by critics.

Former France first lady stung by criticism

Benedict returns to Vatican to live out retirement

FRANCE’S former first lady Carla Bruni said she was hurt by press comments calling her fat after the birth of her daughter and squashed rumours she would leave her husband Nicolas Sarkozy after his failed re-election bid. In an interview in Vanity Fair magazine published yesterday, Bruni admitted she is in therapy and said she felt vulnerable when she was 40 pounds (18 kgs) overweight after giving birth at age 43 to her daughter, Giulia, who was born in 2011. “They get really nasty. Nothing is out of bounds,” Bruni said about the press comments. “Having children when you are older is not easy.” Bruni described rumours about her marriage as “crazy” and added she had never thought of leaving Sarkozy after he lost the election in May. Power was one of the problems they had to face together, she added. “Power is brutal, and you have to be very structured inside to cope with power without getting blown away,” she told the magazine. The singer-songwriter and former model, whose newest CD Carla Bruni, Little French Songs was released on April 1, said therapy helps her think clearly and is about taking responsibility. “And I like this type of work because with ageing, if there is no philosophy, there’s no serenity, there’s no wisdom and there’s nothing but falling apart,” she said. Although Bruni said her husband listens to her advice, she said it is not her choice whether her husband launches a political comeback. A formal investigation of Sarkozy opened in March into allegations that he took advantage of the mental frailty of 90-year-old L’Oreal heiress Liliane Bettencourt, France’s richest woman, in 2007 to raise funds for his election campaign.

‘Emeritus pope’ to live in restored convent By Philip Pullella

Shortly before his resignation, Benedict had said he would be ‘withdrawing into prayer’ and live out his remaining days ‘hidden from the world’ (EPA)

BENEDICT XVI moved back to the Vatican yesterday, opening an uncertain era in Catholic Church history where an “emeritus pope” and a ruling pontiff will live as neighbours for the first time. Benedict, the first pope to abdicate in 600 years, will live out his retirement in a restored convent in the Vatican gardens with a view of the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica and just a short walk from the residence of his successor, Francis. Benedict, 86 and in frail health, arrived by helicopter from Castel Gandolfo, the papal summer residence south of Rome, where he had been staying since February 28 while the convent was being restored. Francis, 76, was due to greet Benedict later yesterday in front of the convent, the first time they have met since March 23, when Francis visited Benedict at Castel Gandolfo and Benedict renewed a pledge of “unconditional reverence and obedience” to Francis. The small building includes

a chapel, a library for the former theology professor, quarters for his aides and a guest room for his older brother, Georg, a monsignor. While the presence of a reigning pope and a former one is a new situation, experts say it would only cause difficulties if Benedict tried to influence Pope Francis’s decisions, something he has promised not to do.

‘REFERENCE POINT’ Shortly before his resignation, Benedict said he would be “withdrawing into prayer” and would live out his remaining days “hidden from the world”. Still, some Church scholars say that, in the event Francis undoes some of Benedict’s policies while he is still alive, the former pope could become a lightning rod for conservatives and polarise the Church. “Benedict almost certainly will be a point of reference for critics of Francis, especially in conservative circles. You can easily imagine them saying, ‘Benedict wouldn’t have done it this way’,” said John Allen, author of several books on the Church and

correspondent for the National Catholic Reporter. “That criticism will circulate on blogs, in journals and in the pews, no matter where he’s physically located, and Benedict himself won’t be a party to it. If anything, being behind Vatican walls will make it more difficult for the opposition to reach him and claim some sort of blessing,” Allen said. Vatican officials have said the men, both of whom wear slightly different white vestments, would likely meet occasionally and perhaps confer on Church matters, but that Francis is his own man. “On a human level, it’s hard to imagine that Pope Francis would treat the retired pope as some sort of ‘untouchable’. I think they can certainly spend time together and exchange views without causing any crisis in the Church,” said John Thavis, author of The Vatican Diaries. Benedict’s two months away have allowed everyone to get used to the idea that he is no longer on the Vatican stage, said Father John Paul Wauck, professor at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross in Rome.

EU’s Ashton to meet Iran’s nuclear negotiator on May 15 EUROPEAN Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton will meet Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili in Istanbul on May 15, her spokesman said on Thursday, to discuss future diplomatic efforts to resolve a decade-old dispute over Tehran’s atom work. The meeting will follow a round of negotiations held in Kazakh city of Almaty in April between Iran and six world powers, which failed to produce a breakthrough. Ashton represents the six nations

- the United States, China, Russia, Britain, France and Germany - in talks with Iran on its controversial atom programme.

DISCUSSIONS CRUCIAL Western diplomats say discussions between Ashton and Jalili will be crucial in deciding whether and when a new round of negotiations between the six powers and Iran can take place. The UN nuclear watchdog and Iran

are also due to hold separate talks in Vienna on May 15. The International Atomic Energy Agency has tried for more than a year to coax Tehran to allow its inspectors to resume a long-stalled investigation into suspected atom bomb research by the Islamic state. Iran rejects international suspicions that its atomic programme has a covert military dimension and says it needs nuclear power for energy generation and medical purposes.

Britain BRITAIN TODAY 43,000 kids targeted in vaccination bid ALMOST 43,000 at-risk children and teenagers are being targeted in an urgent vaccination effort in the face of a spreading measles epidemic. Health chiefs in Wales warned yesterday that the epidemic concentrated in the Swansea area could spread across the principality without action. Measles cases in the greater Swansea area carried on rising today as the headline total hit 1,039. An extra 28 cases in the region since Tuesday show the epidemic, which begin in November 2012, continues to spread. Public Health Wales (PHW) revealed that more than 33,000 nonroutine vaccinations have been given across Wales during the outbreak. The good news is that those who already had the three-in-one measles, mumps and rubella jab (MMR) before the outbreak have had almost total protection.

Shift in EU tone A MASSIVE Ukip surge appeared to be taking place yesterday in the South Shields by-election and local elections across the country. Nigel Farage’s party looked set to cut deeply into the Tory vote in their shire heartlands, dent Labours vote in the northeast by-election, and create havoc for all three main parties in town and county halls. David Cameron’s 11thhour shift in tone on Europe yesterday appeared to have failed to stem a significant breakthrough by the anti-EU party. That shift— a hint that he would give MPs an early vote on an EU referendum Bill — was thrown into doubt when sources close to Nick Clegg said the Deputy Prime Minister would veto it. The uncertainty created the conditions for what one nervous Tory said could be “a perfect storm” in yesterday’s elections.

Veteran BBC broadcaster admits to abuse Hall’s youngest victim was aged just nine By Michael Holden VETERAN BBC broadcaster Stuart Hall pleaded guilty to sex offences yesterday, the latest British TV star from the 1970s and 1980s to be embroiled in abuse allegations. Hall, 83, who was best known for hosting the family TV show It’s a Knockout and was still working for the BBC as a football radio commentator until recently, admitted 14 counts of indecent offences against young girls over two decades, with the youngest victim aged just nine. “Whether in public or private, Hall would first approach under friendly pretences and then bide his time until the victim was isolated,” said Nazir Afzal, Chief Crown Prosecutor in northwest England. “He can only be described as

an opportunistic predator.” Hall’s admission follows a scandal centred on the late Jimmy Savile, an eccentric former BBC TV presenter who police said in January had committed sex crimes on an unprecedented scale and was suspected of more than 200 offences.

ALLEGATIONS The revelations about Savile, one of the BBC’s biggest stars during the 1970s and 1980s and who was knighted by Queen Elizabeth, rocked the public broadcaster and heralded subsequent allegations against a procession of ageing, high-profile names. On Wednesday, William Roache, the world’s longest serving TV soap actor according to Guinness World Records, was charged with two counts of rape against a

Fraudster jailed for sale of false bomb detectors THE conman who sold fake bomb detectors to Iraq was jailed for 10 years yesterday after a judge said he had blood on his hands. James McCormick, 57, showed no reaction as he was told his “callous confidence trick” was the worst fraud imaginable. At the Old Bailey Judge Richard Hone told him: “I am wholly satisfied that your fraudulent conduct in selling so many useless devices for simply enormous profit promoted a false sense of security and in all probability materially contributed to causing death and injury to innocent individuals.” He jailed McCormick, who was thought to have made £50 million from selling three models based on a novelty £13 golf ball finder to Iraq and other countries. McCormick, of Langport, Somerset, was found guilty of three offences of fraud last week. The prosecution said there was no scientific basis to

‘Callous confidence trick’: James McCormick the detectors and they were nothing more than a con. Judge Hone told McCormick: “What you perpetrated was a callous confidence trick. “The device was useless, the profit outrageous and your culpability as a fraudster has to be placed in the highest category. “Your profits were obscene. You have neither insight, shame or any sense of remorse.”

UK to be ‘40% ethnic minorities by 2050’ BRITAIN will become one of the world’s most ethnically diverse countries in less than 40 years, an academic study has found. The proportion of minority groups living in Britain will rise from 10 per cent in 2006 to 40 per cent by 2050, the Migration Observatory at the University of Oxford said. The Observatory’s Professor David Coleman said if current trends continue, the so-called majority-ethnic group in the UK - white British - will become a minority before 2070. Prof Coleman said this assumption does not factor in the impact of current or future government attempts to reduce net migration. In his briefing, Prof Coleman said: “Migration has become the primary driver of demo-

graphic change in most high-income countries and may remain so. “On current trends, European populations will become more ethnically diverse, with the possibility that today’s majority ethnic groups will no longer comprise a numerical majority in some countries.” In England and Wales, censuses show that in 1841 just 0.25 per cent of the population was “foreign-born”, rising to 4.4 per cent in 1951. By 2010/2011, in the whole of the UK, immigrants made up 13 per cent of the population. Professor Coleman said part of the reason behind the decline in white-British members of the population is declining birth rates.

15-year-old girl. Roache, 81, who has played womaniser Ken Barlow in the ITV soap opera Coronation Street since its first episode in 1960, is accused of attacking the girl in 1967. While neither the cases of Hall nor Roache were directly linked to the Savile case, the police inquiry into sex crimes has shocked Britons. Last week, celebrity publicist Max Clifford, 70, whose clients have included The X Factor reality TV creator Simon Cowell, was charged by police after he was accused of 11 offences of indecent assault between 1966 and 1985. Australian children’s entertainer Rolf Harris, 83, who once painted the queen’s portrait, former BBC radio DJ Dave Lee Travis, 67 - praised by Myanmar’s Aung San Suu Kyi for keeping her en-

‘Opportunistic predator’: Hall admitted 14 counts of indecent offences against young girls over two decades tertained during her years of house arrest - and comedian Freddie Starr, 70, are among those arrested. Clifford and others who have spoken out publicly or through their lawyers have denied any wrongdoing. Media commentator Roy Greenslade said he expected the successful prosecution of Hall would lead to even more women coming forward with

allegations. “My first thought on hearing this string of arrests was that the police couldn’t possibly effect prosecutions that would succeed because of the length of time between the offence having happened and now,” he told Reuters. Greenslade said the historic offences reflected the fact people in the 1960s and 1970s had ignored “sexual shenanigans”.

A sentence of 15 years hard labour for US national

WORLD TODAY Suspect had no valid visa ONE of three college students arrested in the Boston Marathon bombings case was allowed to return to the U.S. from Kazakhstan in January despite not having a valid student visa. The authorities charged the student - a friend and classmate of one of the men accused of setting off the pair of deadly explosions on April 15 with helping to remove a laptop and backpack from the suspect’s dormitory room after the attacks and before the FBI searched it. The government acknowledged that US Customs and Border Protection was unaware that the student was no longer in college when he was let back into the US. The disclosure was another instance of possible lapses by the government in the months before the bombings. The Obama administration earlier this week announced an internal review of how US intelligence agencies shared sensitive information and whether the government could have prevented the attack.

North Korea is likely to use Kenneth Bae as a bargaining chip in Washington talks By Ju-min Park

Yoghurt deaths TWO girls have died in China after eating poisoned yoghurt placed outside their kindergarten by a man acting for the head of a rival school, reports say. Police believe the poisoning was motivated by competition for pupils between the schools, the Xinhua News Agency says. It says the female head confessed that she injected the yoghurt with rat poison and asked a man to place it with notebooks on the road to the rival kindergarten in Pingshan county in Hebei province.

Mum returns A U.S. woman has reemerged 11 years after walking away from her two children, her job and her life in Pennsylvania to hitchhike with strangers to Florida. Police say Brenda Heist disclosed her identity last week in South Florida, saying she slept under bridges and scavenged food from restaurant rubbish bins to survive.

A local television broadcast in Seoul yesterday shows a photograph of US citizen Kenneth Bae (main image)

NORTH Korea sentenced U.S. citizen Kenneth Bae to 15 years hard labour yesterday for what it said were crimes against the state, a move that will likely see him used as a bargaining chip in talks with Washington. Bae, 44, was born in South Korea but is a naturalised American citizen and attended the University of Oregon. According to US media, he most recently lived in the Seattle suburb of Lynnwood. A North Korean defector said Bae will likely serve his sentence in a special facility for foreigners, not in one of the repressive state’s forced labour camps. More than 200,000 people are incarcerated in these camps, beaten and starved, sometimes to death, according to human rights bodies. Bae’s sentencing comes after two months of sabre-rattling by Pyongyang that saw North Korea threaten both the United States and South Korea with nuclear war. Bae is believed to be a devout Christian, according to human rights activists in South Korea, who say he may have been arrested for taking pictures of starving children, known as “kotjebi”

or fluttering swallows. He was part of a group of five tourists who visited the northeastern North Korean city of Rajin in November and has been held since then. Some media reports have identified Bae as the leader of the tour group and NK News, a specialist North Korea news website, said he was the owner of a company called Nation Tours that specialised in tours of north-east North Korea. The reports could not be verified and North Korean state news agency KCNA did not list any specific charge other than crimes against the state, and used a Korean rendering of Bae’s name, Pae Jun-ho, when it reported the Supreme Court ruling. “North Korea has shown their intention to use him as a negotiating card as they have done in the past,” said Cheong Seong-chang, senior fellow at the Sejong Institute, a Seoulbased think-tank. Bae’s sentence was heftier than the 12 years handed down to two US journalists, Laura Ling and Euna Lee, in 2009. It took a visit to Pyongyang by former President Bill Clinton to secure their release. North Korea appears to use the release of high profile American prisoners to extract a form of personal trib-

ute, rather than for economic or diplomatic gain, often portraying visiting dignitaries as paying homage. According to North Korean law, the punishment for hostile acts against the state is between five and 10 years hard labour. North Korea is one of the most isolated states on earth. Its official policy of “Juche” or self-reliance is a fusion of Marxism, extreme nationalism and self sufficiency centred on the cult of the ruling Kim family. Bae will not however be incarcerated in one of the North’s notorious slave labour camps, such as the one where defector Kwon Hyo-jin was locked up. There, Kwon said, prisoners were worked to death and often survived only by eating rats and snakes. “If an American served jail together with North Korean inmates, which won’t happen, he could tell them about capitalism or economic developments,” said Kwon, a North Korean sentenced to one of its camps for seven years until 2007. He defected to South Korea in 2009. “(Bae) would be sent to a correctional facility that only houses foreigners and was set up as a model for international human rights groups.”

Convicted spy killed in jail attack A CONVICTED Indian spy who was on Pakistan’s death row died from a head injury after two inmates attacked him with a brick, state TV said early yesterday. Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said his government would arrange to bring Sarabjit Singh’s remains home and for his last rites to be conducted in consultation with his family. The statement called it “particularly regrettable” that Pakistan did not heed pleas to take a humanitarian view of the prisoner’s case. It is unclear how his death will affect the relationship between Pakistan and India. The nuclear-armed rivals have fought three major wars since they achieved independence from Britain in 1947. Relations have warmed somewhat in recent years, especially with regard to trade. Sarabjit Singh was attacked last Friday at a jail in the eastern city of Lahore and had been moved to a hospital for treatment. His was arrested in 1990 after bombings in Lahore and Faisalabad that killed 14 people.

He was convicted of spying and carrying out the bomb blasts, and the death sentence he received has been upheld in Pakistani superior courts. His family, who visited him in Pakistan after he was attacked, maintained he was innocent. They are in shock and demand that his body be brought from Pakistan and cremated with state honours, family friend Raj Kumar said in New Delhi. Singh’s wife Sukhpreet Kaur, two daughters and his sister had visited him in the Lahore hospital earlier this week and returned to India on Wednesday. External Affairs Ministry spokesman Syed Akbaruddin said India was demanding a thorough investigation to identify who was responsible for the attack. “This was simply the killing of an Indian citizen while in the custody of Pakistani authorities,” the statement said. The attack “highlights the need for a concerted action by Pakistan to safeguard Indian prisoners in Pakistan”.

Local mayor suspended as Bangladesh disaster toll increases to 430 THE mayor of the Bangladesh municipality where a factory building collapsed killing more than 400 people was suspended from office yesterday, a government minister said, as rescuers pressed on with the task of recovering bodies from the wreckage. The scale of the April 24 disaster has prompted a worldwide outcry at poor safety and pay in many factories making clothes

for Western brands, with Pope Francis on Wednesday likening the conditions of workers who died to “slave labour”. The salvage operation remained slow despite the heavy machinery now being used to clear the rubble of Rana Plaza, in Dhaka’s commercial suburb of Savar, with a handful more bodies found yesterday taking the death toll to 430.

“We are working here round the clock,” army spokesman Shahinul Islam said. “Rescue operations are taking time as everything is being done with utmost caution.” Junior minister for local government Jagangir Kabir Nanak told reporters that Savar’s mayor, Mohammad Refat Ullah, had been suspended for approving the construction of Rana Plaza. A senior official from the state-run Capital

Development Authority (CDA) said last week that the Savar municipality did not have the authority to grant the permit it had issued for a five-storey building at the site, and that three more storeys had been illegally added to the building. “We won’t spare anyone... actions will be taken against all who are responsible for the tragedy,” Nanak said.

Official suspended over SA flight scandal SOUTH Africa suspended a senior foreign ministry official yesterday after a charter plane carrying nearly 200 guests for the wedding of a family with close ties to President Jacob Zuma used an Air Force base without proper military permission. The scandal over Tuesday’s flight from India to the Waterkloof Air Force Base near Pretoria has dominated South African media, with newspapers and radio phone-in callers accusing the wealthy Gupta family of influence peddling. The defence ministry said it had rejected a request from the Guptas to use the base but the Indian High Commission in Pretoria then went behind its back and sought authorisation from the Chief of State Protocol at the foreign ministry. “The clearance should be rescinded and that aircraft should immediately be removed,” it stated. The foreign ministry said its protocol chief, Bruce Koloane, had been suspended to “allow the department to get to the bottom of this matter”, adding that no “executive authority” was granted for a civilian aircraft to land at the base. Foreign ministry spokesman Clayson Monyela confirmed that the flight carried some Indian state ministers arriving for the wedding. The business empire of Gupta brothers Atul, Ajay and Rajesh covers mining, resources, aviation and technology. Two of Zuma’s children have served as directors of Gupta firms, according to South Africa’s companies database, and the family is a major financial backer of the ruling African National Congress (ANC). The Times newspaper labelled the scandal “Guptagate”, but the New Age newspaper - owned by the Gupta family - covered the incident under the headline: “Media ‘wrong’ on jet-set wedding”. The ANC also called for an explanation as to how the aircraft managed to land at the base, saying it would never allow “a situation where our ports of entry and national key points are penetrated with impunity”.

Centre of legal tussle: Libya, which wants to try Said al-Islam itself, has yet to indict him for war crimes, although the public prosecutor has said a case is being prepared and will soon go to court

Deposed Gaddafi’s son appears briefly in court By Ghaith Shennib SAIF al-Islam, a son of deposed Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, appeared in court yesterday in the town of Zintan, where he had been held since his capture by former rebels in November 2011. Saif al-Islam, at the centre of a legal tussle between Libya and the International Criminal Court (ICC), smiled and told reporters he was in good health during his brief appearance. The powerful armed group in Zintan, which spearheaded the capture of Tripoli from Gaddafi’s forces in August 2011, has insisted on keeping Saif al-Islam imprisoned in the town, about 140 km (87 miles) southwest of the Libyan capital. Once Gaddafi’s presumed heir, Saif al-Islam is wanted by the ICC on war crimes charges, but the case to be heard in

ICC will decide this month if Libya able to try Saif al-Islam Zintan relates to charges that he gave information to an ICC lawyer last year that could endanger national security. He was the only defendant of 13 people who were called to appear in court on those charges, confirming he was in the room when his name was called out and that his lawyers were present. The case was then postponed until September 19 because the defence’s case was incomplete. The ICC lawyer, Australian Melinda Taylor, was herself detained for three weeks after a meeting in which Saif al-Islam is accused of handing over sensitive papers and information. Taylor has said her detention proved Saif al-Islam could

not get a fair trial in Libya. ICC lawyers also note that he could face the death penalty if convicted in the North African state - an outcome that would be welcome to many Libyans who suffered under Gaddafi’s 42-year rule and in the revolt that toppled him. Libya, which wants to try Saif al-Islam itself, has yet to indict him for war crimes, although the public prosecutor has said a case is being prepared and will soon go to court. Libyan lawyer Ahmed al-Jehani, who liaises between the ICC and the Tripoli government, said he expected the ICC to decide in May whether Libya can handle Saif al-Islam’s trial and that of Gaddafi’s former intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senussi.

“We have submitted a great deal of evidence and documentation to convince them we are able,” Jehani told Reuters, adding that the dossier included medical reports, confessions and witness statements. “No one can say whether he will get the death penalty,” he said when asked if Saif alIslam was at risk of being executed in Libya. “It is up to the judge,” he added. Senussi was handed over to Libya by Mauritania in September after his arrest in Nouakchott in March 2011 started a tug of war between Libya, France and the ICC for his extradition. Jehani said Taylor, the ICC lawyer, who was among the 13 charged in Zintan yesterday, could be tried in absentia. The ICC, which is only allowed to try cases if national legal systems are unable or unwilling to deal with them, declined to comment on the proceedings in Zintan.

FORCES loyal to President Bashar al-Assad retook a central district in the city of Homs yesterday, driving a wedge between two isolated pockets of rebel resistance in Syria’s third largest city, fighters and activists said. The recapture of Wadi al-Sayeh, which links the besieged rebel stronghold in Khalidiyah to the opposition-held old city, appears to be part of a series of carefully focused counter-offensives that mark a shift from the indiscriminate campaigns earlier in the two-yearold conflict. Homs is a link in the corridor connecting Assad’s Damascus powerbase with the traditional Mediterranean heartland of his minority Alawite community. It was an early centre of the mainly Sunni Muslim uprising against four decades of Assad family rule. Following recent gains in rural areas around Homs, Assad’s forces surrounded the towns of Baida and Maqreb on the road to the coastal city of Banias yesterday, activists said, the latest stage in a campaign to secure the corridor. They also seized Qaysa town on the eastern edge of Damascus.

Virus deaths SAUDI Arabia said five more people have died of a deadly new virus from the same family as SARS, and two other people were in intensive care. The seven cases were discovered in al-Ahsa governorate in the Eastern Province, the Saudi news agency SPA quoted the Saudi Health Ministry as saying late on Wednesday. A Saudi man died in March from the virus. The novel coronavirus (NCoV) is from the same family of viruses as those causing common colds and the one that caused the deadly outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) that first emerged in Asia in 2003.

Business EC chief urges pro growth measures

ECB cuts rates, looks to help smaller companies

EUROPEAN Union governments and institutions must take “immediate action” to promote growth and jobs creation as countries are tired of austerity, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy said yesterday. “Taking these measures is more urgent than anything,” he told a conference in Portugal. “After three years of firefights, patience with austerity is wearing understandably thin.” Still, he said Europe cannot completely veer off the course of reducing budget deficits and has to find “the right path” between deficit cuts and pro-growth measures, while continuing with structural reforms and ensuring financial stability. Van Rompuy’s remarks add to a growing chorus of eurozone policymakers acknowledging that fiscal rigour to contain the region’s debt crisis must be tempered with steps to stimulate economies experiencing feeble growth and alarming levels of unemployment. Van Rompuy said the easing of deficit targets for countries like bailed-out Portugal, as decided in March, or giving countries more time to repay rescue loans was the kind of healthy pragmatism he supported for other European countries. He called on the European Central Bank and European Investment Bank to work to ease the key problem of funding strains of smalland medium-sized companies while banks are still reluctant to take on further credit risk. He did not specify what other growth measures should be taken. Another step that should help the EU prevent future crises is the completion of the banking union to separate sovereign risks from financial sector risks.

THE European Central Bank cut interest rates for the first time in 10 months yesterday, promising to provide as much liquidity as eurozone banks need well into next year, and to help smaller companies get access to credit. The ECB lowered its main interest rate by a quarter percentage point to a record low 0.50 per cent in response to a drop in eurozone inflation well below its target level, and rising unemployment. The cut was widely expected after President Mario Draghi said last month that the ECB stood ready to act, but few economists expect it to make a decisive difference. Acknowledging that, the ECB said it would prime banks with as much liquidity as they need until at least July 2014 and look at ways to boost lending to smaller companies, which are the lifeblood of Europe’s economies but which in many countries have been starved of credit. “Weak economic sentiment has extended into the spring of this year,” Draghi told a news conference. “Our monetary policy stance will remain accommodative for as long as needed.” He stuck with the ECB’s forecast that economic recovery will take hold later in the year, but highlighted “down-

ECB President Mario Draghi stuck with the Bank’s forecast that economic recovery will take hold later in the year, but highlighted ‘downside risks’ to that position side risks” to that position. The ECB would “monitor very closely” all incoming evidence, Draghi said, a phrase which in the past has suggested further policy action to come. He added that there was a strong consensus to cut rates, indicating one or more policymakers did not agree. Unemployment hit a record high in March and annual inflation plunged to 1.2 per cent in April, pressuring the ECB to cut rates to honour its mandate to deliver price

stability, which it defines as inflation close to, but below 2 per cent. “The ECB is playing it safe, even though they know the effect is likely to be limited,” Nordea analyst Anders Svendsen said of the cut. The sudden slump in price pressures has also raised the possibility of the ECB having to look at policy tools beyond interest rates to counter any further slide in inflation. “Ultimately, we think the ECB will have to purchase

private-sector assets in order to fix the transmission mechanism,” said Andrew Bosomworth at PIMCO, the world’s largest bond fund. Safe haven German Bund futures hit a new record high at 146.99 as Draghi spoke. The ECB wants to improve the transmission of its monetary policy so its low rates reach all corners of the eurozone. The bloc’s south is not benefiting to the same extent as the north from the ultra-low

rates. If they are lending at all, banks there are charging companies and households more for loans than their peers in the north because of higher funding costs and credit risks. “There can’t be fears of lack of funding as an excuse for not lending,” Draghi said after the policy meeting in Bratislava, one of two the ECB holds outside of Frankfurt each year. The ECB has repeatedly voiced its concern about the impact this has on lending to small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which have little alternative to bank funding. The ECB wants to revive an asset class that has widely been blamed for causing the financial crisis - asset-backed securities (ABS). This asset class allows banks to pass at least some of the credit risk on to other investors as they try to boost their capital and liquidity buffers to adapt to new regulatory standards - one reason for their reluctance to lend. “The Governing Council decided to start consultations with other European institutions on initiatives to promote a functioning market for asset-backed securities,” Draghi said, adding that no decisions had been taken. Draghi said the ECB could only do so much to put the eurozone on the path to recovery. Governments, he said, must press on with structural reforms and plans for a closer currency union. In particular, he said, there should be “swift implementation” of a banking union, elements of which Germany opposes because it fears it will have to foot the bill for failing banks in other countries. Nor should countries give up on their debt-cutting drives in a dash for economic growth, he said, in response to calls from eurozone governments outside Germany to do just that.

ROYAL Dutch Shell’s 54-year old chief executive Peter Voser is to retire next year in a surprise early departure he said was driven by a desire for a change of lifestyle. Over the past nine years the softly spoken and widely respected Swiss national has helped drive the group’s structural reorganisation and recovery from sector laggard to a leading position in the burgeoning industry of liquefied natural gas (LNG). He took over as finance director of Europe’s top oil company in 2004 amid the board-level bloodshed that followed

its shocking downgrade of reserves estimates and became CEO in 2009. His departure comes as the company and the industry face huge new challenges. Shell is the western world’s number two company by production behind Exxon Mobil. But, like its peers, it is struggling to replace reserves and boost production and faces a squeeze on earnings as costs rise while the price of oil threatens to fall decisively below the psychologically important $100 a barrel level. Finance director Simon Henry said the company was well-placed for the

recent fall in prices. “We also think there are quite few players in the market, quite a few companies, who actually have bet the farm on $100-plus oil prices. We don’t,” he said. “We’re structured around a lower oil price so it is not bad for us.” Nevertheless, analysts say that among the world’s top oil companies, Shell spends more on exploration per barrel produced than any of its competitors. Its most high-profile exploration failure has been in Alaska, where it has spent $5 billion since 2006, and has yet to drill a single complete hole.

THE number of Americans filing new claims for jobless benefits fell sharply last week to its lowest level since the early days of the 2007-09 recession, suggesting the job market is still healing despite weakness in the broader economy. Other data yesterday showed a narrowing of the US trade gap in March, although drops in imports and exports during the month gave potential warning signs over the strength of domestic and foreign demand.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 18,000 to a seasonally adjusted 324,000 the Labour Department said. The claims report runs counter to a growing number of signals that economic activity softened in March and April, a phenomena economists have dubbed the spring swoon because it also happened in the previous two years. The data on claims has no direct bearing on the Labour Department’s monthly employment report for April

due today. However, it suggests that while employers have cut back on hiring, they are feeling less pressure to lay workers off. Analysts had expected 345,000 new jobless claims last week, and US stock index futures added to gains following the release of the claims data, while yields on US government debt rose. The four-week moving average for new claims, a less volatile measure of labour market trends, fell 16,000 last week to 342,250.

Protecting the labour aristocracy at the expense of ordinary workers BAMBIS KYRITSIS the head of the AKELcontrolled union PEO, said the red flags would be kept flying, during his Labour Day speech that was marked by the familiar, rousing rhetoric about defending workers’ interests and fighting for social justice and welfare. He did not specify which workers’ interests he would be defending – the privileged labour aristocrats of the public sector or the secondclass citizens employed in the private sector who have seen their earnings plummet over the last couple of years? The fact is that in its five years in government, AKEL has contributed more to the impoverishment of the lowest-paid workers than any other political party. In March Cyprus had the second highest rise in unemployment in the Eurozone and it is only a matter of months before it will have the highest. Over the last couple of years private sector wages have fallen by as much as 50 per cent as a direct result of Christofias’ mismanagement of the economy, which put the interests and privileges of public sector workers above everyone else’s, and the banking crisis. Of course when it comes to protecting privileges of pay of public sector workers and pandering to unions all the parties are in agreement. This was why they all declared they would never accept privatisation of semi-governmental organisations. Christofias claimed he would not sign the memorandum if it included privatisations, indicating that state bankruptcy was preferable to touching the super-privileges of SGO workers. In the end these privileges were also protected by the Anastasiades government, employees of the broader public sector, whose salaries were on average 40 per cent higher, suffering the smallest pay-cut. Neither state bankruptcy nor record unemployment has stopped the labour aristocrats protecting their provocative privileges. Cyprus Airways employees will be paid redundancy compensation by the taxpayer 50 per cent higher than what they are entitled to by law. Limassol port workers, meanwhile, yesterday held a 24-hour warning strike and imposed an overtime ban until Wednesday in protest against a proposed wage freeze and reduction of their 14th salary by 50 per cent. They also opposed the reduction of their overtime rates from being three times the hourly rate to two. Could there be a bigger incentive for avoiding doing any work during normal working hours than making overtime pay 300 per cent higher? It is for these greedy and selfish workers that Kyritsis’ red flags are raised, because neither the communists nor the union bosses nor the politicians seem remotely interested in protecting the country’s true workers, the men and women who toil every day without job security, without triple overtime pay, without hope of state-enhanced redundancy compensation. It is a zero sum game - the more that is taken from the economy for the labour aristocrats the fewer the resources left to protect the unemployed and the poor.

Benefits from oil could accrue earlier than gas Comment Constantinos Hadjistassou

F

OR THE past one and a half years natural gas has taken centre stage in the local media. Strikingly enough, energy developments in the eastern Med have garnered sustained international attention. To put things into context, should the Aphrodite gas field be appraised to, say, 225 billion cubic metres (bcm) or 8 tcf, it will surpass the UK’s proved natural gas reserves of 7.1 tcf (201 bcm). Without factoring in any future natural gas discoveries, Block 12 alone has enough gas to supply Cypriot energy needs for several decades to come, still leaving appreciable latitude for exports. But while virtually all the limelight focuses on natural gas as a way to prod Cyprus out of the economic crisis, it is easy to lose sight of the prospect for oil. Oil and natural gas, despite naturally occurring together usually in the same geological formations, serve two distinct energy markets. Natural gas is predominantly destined for electricity generation whereas oil is the prime transportation fuel. Worldwide, oil makes up about 30 per cent of the primary energy supply. Transportation fuels including diesel, gasoline and aviation fuel (kerosene) are 96 per cent derived from oil. Oil by virtue of its ease of being hauled, chemical stability, high energy density, and safe nature dominates the transportation energy mix. This hegemony is unlikely to be challenged any time soon, unless alternative and cost-effective transportation fuels emerge or hybrid/electric vehicles become more economically competitive circumventing technical limitations. Natural gas is more environmentally friendly than oil. Mainly due to its gaseous nature and relatively low volumetric energy density, natural gas is less fungible than oil meaning that it is cumbersome to transport from source to end-users. Deepwater offshore oil production is expected to undergo phenomenal growth accounting for 11 per cent of the global oil production in 2015, up from 1 per cent in 2000. In relation to natural gas, oil does not only fetch a higher price, it is usually exploited within shorter time frames. On an energy equivalent basis, meaning that a barrel of oil contains 5.8 times the energy of natural gas, and at a natural gas selling price of $10 per million BTU, oil is worth three times as much as the price of natural gas. PROSPECTING FOR OIL Expedited by the presidential elections, the second licensing round culminated in the awarding of five offshore licences, namely, blocks 2, 3 and 9 to Eni and Kogas, and blocks 10 and 11 to Total. Sources revealed that Total will prioritise the quest for oil in blocks 10 and 11. For this purpose, the French supermajor is believed to be making the necessary preparations for oil

exploration. These steps comprise gathering all the pertinent geological information and analysing it in the context of the already two-dimensional seismic data, conducted by PGS, and the interpretation reports issued by Beicip Franlab. Subsequently, a seismic survey vessel will acquire three-dimensional (3D) seismic measurements in the promising acreage. Next in line will be to source the semi-submersible drilling rig or drill ship which will attempt the exploration well(s). Each well is expected to cost about €80m. As of February 2013, the average chartering rates for drillships amounted to $450,000/day while semi-sub rigs cost about $370,000/day. Oil is usually found in reservoirs occurring at greater depths than natural gas. Only in-situ drilling can unravel the mystery of the existence of oil in the Cypriot EEZ. Interestingly, no well—in the eastern Med— has yet to reach the desirable depth at which oil is believed to reside. If successful, such an oil borehole is anticipated to extend to a total depth, including the water column, of about 7,500m. Indeed this will be an engineering feat. Developing such a deep offshore oil field will represent another engineering marvel. Such ultra deepwater developments were literally unheard of a decade ago. Prior to embarking on such an ambitious endeavour, oil companies piece together all the geological evidence within reach. Considering the southern area of the Cypriot EEZ, we have strong indications to be optimistic that oil lies below the sea floor. Suffice to mention that Beicip Franlab, in its interpretation reports of the seismic data, acquired by PGS, identifies 14 oil plays, six of which are located in the vicinity of the Eratosthenes sea mount close to blocks number 10 and 11. Proved working hydrocarbon systems offer another line of evidence. Last but not least

the natural gas discovered in the Aphrodite field is thermogenic in nature pointing to the presence of oil. TIMEFRAME FOR EXPORTS: NATURAL GAS VERSUS OIL Given the state of the Cypriot economy, time is of the essence. Put simply, the faster Cyprus exploits a portion of its fossil fuels the better—provided that benefits spill into the economy. However, this pace is governed by a host of factors, chief among which are technical and economic considerations. The Tamar gas consortium prides itself of developing the gas field within a record time schedule spanning just four years from discovery to commercialisation. Essentially, the time it takes to extract natural gas or oil from a subsea reservoir of cognate geological complexity requiring similar equipment does not fundamentally differ, at least as regards the first phases of the field life cycle (see figure). That is, for oil companies to gain access and complete the exploratory drilling it usually takes three to four years. Once hydrocarbons have been encountered the next phase is to appraise them. The appraisal phase, which accurately assesses the potential of the oil or gas field and hedges against risk, takes about two years. Subsequently, the development phase could extend from two to four years depending on the complexity of the hydrocarbons field, extraction rates, availability of equipment etc. Field production of oil or gas usually lasts about 20 to 30 years. Finally, offshore field decommissioning and abandonment could take two to three years. When it comes to exporting oil or natural gas what matters most is the time it takes to construct the export terminal. Stranded gas resources with no immediate access to markets can be exported in liquefied

form usually requiring a liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility and a subsea pipeline to siphon the gas to shore. Offshore oil on the other hand has the advantage that it can be processed in-situ onboard a Floating, Production, Storage and Offloading (FPSO) vessel. As its name implies, an FPSO partially processes the oil, stores it onboard and offloads it onto a shuttle tanker. Hence, the FPSO solution obviates the need to construct expensive submarine pipelines. Compared to the construction of an LNG plant of about 5 million tonnes of export capacity per year (5 mtpa), which could take about eight years to complete and cost some €7 billion, an FPSO costs around €1bn and can be ready in, say, two anda-half years. Overall, natural gas exports can commence the earliest after 2022 while oil exports as early as 2021. Prior to any exploitation, however, the prerequisite is the discovery of oil. Despite significant advances in 3D seismic techniques, encountering extractable volumes of hydrocarbons remains a risky business. The chances of striking oil in the Cypriot EEZ are probably on the order of 40 per cent, i.e. four out of 10 wells. However, as of 2010, the world average success rate for commercial discoveries dropped to 18 per cent. Indisputably oil can be a game changer if discovered in sufficiently large quantities for commercial exploitation. If additional gas quantities are discovered, Europe stands to benefit from Cypriot exports as well. Hypothetically if oil is found, it will mark a new era for Cyprus and the region. Until then maintaining sovereignty over our resources is of paramount importance. Showbiz CAST SHOCKED AS SPICE GIRLS MUSICAL VIVA FOREVER! TO CLOSE IN HIGH-PROFILE LONDON FAILURE

Shocking news: the stars of Viva Forever! were told that their final performance will be at the Piccadilly Theatre on June 29. Despite opening with £4m advance sales it has lost money for two months

Girl power failure: musical crashes out of the West End with £5m losses By Louise Jury THE Spice Girls musical is to close after little more than six months in one of the most high-profile crashes in West End history. The shocked cast of Viva Forever! was told on Tuesday night that the production will stage its final performance at the Piccadilly Theatre on June 29. The show opened with £4 million advance ticket sales and made money for the first four months. But producer Judy Craymer, who previously had the Midas touch with Abba musical Mamma Mia!, said it was now losing too much every week to continue. The loss is understood to be about £5 million.

The five former Spice Girls, who all invested in the production and attended the opening in December, thanked the cast and all the fans for their support. “Although Viva Forever! won’t continue in the West End, we are thrilled that the thousands of people who came to the show had as much fun as we did,” they said in a joint statement yesterday. Written by Jennifer Saunders, the show tells the story of a wannabe girl band and their adventures on a TV talent show, using Spice Girl songs. However, most critics concluded it lacked the sparkle of the band themselves, and came to life only in the finale. Craymer, the principal investor, said it had been diffi-

cult to combat the “constant knocking ... Despite wonderful audiences, standing ovations and positive social media it has proved very difficult to fight back when such negativity was cast, especially in these very tough economic times.” She had “lived and breathed” the show for four years so the decision was “extremely difficult. Everyone involved has worked so hard so it is upsetting. “The show has evolved since we first opened and is now brighter, lighter and funnier, but despite the wonderful audiences and extremely positive feedback we just can’t make it work.” She said she had loved working with Saunders who was “a genius at creating great female characters”,

which musical theatre needed more of. Craymer said she would consider a new show “when an equally challenging and interesting opportunity arises. But for now I have to look after the show and ensure our last eight weeks are the most joyous of the run. Some fans of Viva Forever! announced their disappointment on Twitter yesterday, and vowed to be at the closing night. Spice Girls Geri Halliwell and Emma Bunton had encouraged the production. Their manager, Simon Fuller, was also among investors. Sir Cameron Mackintosh, producer of many hit shows, spoke out two years ago on the difficulty of premiering in the West End, when his highly acclaimed Betty Blue

Eyes closed after six months. Audiences wanted to see the long-running hits when budgets were tight, he said. DJ Mike Read’s musical story of Oscar Wilde closed after one night; Bernadette, a musical about the saint, shut within a month; and The Fields Of Ambrosia about an electric-chair executioner - lasted two-and-ahalf weeks. Trevor Nunn’s Gone With The Wind managed 79 performances. Andrew Lloyd Webber has reworked Phantom Of The Opera sequel Love Never Dies after the London premiere failed to wow critics. Yet Wicked defied less than impressive reviews when it opened in 2006 to build a loyal fanbase and take millions at the box office.

Gene therapy trials for heart health BRITISH scientists are stepping up clinical tests of gene therapy in a bid to help people with advanced heart failure pump blood more efficiently. Researchers said on Tuesday they planned to enroll patients into two new clinical trials using Mydicar, a gene therapy treatment made by privately held US biotech company Celladon. After more than 20 years of research, the ground-breaking method for fixing faulty genes is starting to deliver, with European authorities approving the first gene therapy for an rare metabolic disease last November. In the case of heart failure, the aim is to insert a gene called SERCA2a directly into heart cells using a modified virus,

delivered via a catheter infusion. Lack of SERCA2a leads to ever weaker pumping in people with heart failure. Although drugs offer some relief, there is currently no way of restoring heart function and the prognosis for those with advanced disease is worse than for many cancers.

US-born kids have more allergies KIDS and teens who are born abroad and immigrate to the United States are about half as likely to have asthma and allergies as those who are born in the U.S., according to a new study. Researchers surveyed the parents of 80,000 children in one of six languages and found that association held even after they took into account where families lived and how often they moved, as well as their race and income. “This is definitely something we see clinically and we’re trying to better understand, what is it in our environment that’s increasing the risk of allergic disease?” said Dr. Ruchi Gupta, who studies allergies at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago but wasn’t involved in the new research. “Food allergies have increased tremendously,” she told Reuters Health. “We do see people who come from other countries don’t tend to have it, but immigrants who are maybe

second generation, they’re identical (to US-born people).” It’s not obvious what explains that pattern, researchers said.

Stopping hormone therapy ‘risky’ THOUGH long-term hormone replacement therapy has serious health risks, going off the medication may lead to a return of menopausal symptoms and increased risk for high blood pressure, according to a new study. Taking estrogen or estrogen and progesterone hormones can help alleviate some bothersome symptoms of menopause, like hot flashes, vaginal dryness and trouble sleeping, but the United States Preventive Services Task Force recommends that postmenopausal women avoid the therapy due to an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, dementia and breast cancer. The risks were widely publicised after the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) study results were published in 2002. Despite those risks, “for some women there may be definite benefits (of hormone therapy) that have not been realised,” lead author Dr. Michelle Warren of Columbia University Medical Centre in New York told Reuters Health.

Task force calls for routine HIV testing for Suicide and depression, as well as infectious diseases, on the rise all adults By Julie Steenhuysen

By Kate Kelland AUSTERITY is having a devastating effect on health in Europe and North America, driving suicide, depression and infectious diseases and reducing access to medicines and care, researchers said on Monday. Detailing a decade of research, Oxford University political economist David Stuckler and Sanjay Basu, an assistant professor of medicine and an epidemiologist at Stanford University, said their findings show austerity is seriously bad for health. In a book to be published this week, the researchers say more than 10,000 suicides and up to a million cases of depression have been diagnosed during what they call the “Great Recession” and its accompanying austerity across Europe and North America. In Greece, moves like cutting HIV prevention budgets have coincided with rates of the AIDS-causing virus rising by more than 200 per cent since 2011 - driven in part by increasing drug abuse in the context of a 50 per cent youth unemployment rate. Greece also experienced its first malaria outbreak in decades following budget cuts to mosquito-spraying

programmes. And more than five milost lion Americans have lost ng access to healthcare during the latest recession, they arme gue, while in Britain, some en 10,000 families have been ess pushed into homelessness erby the government’s austerity budget. “Our politicians need to ous take into account the serious nd - and in some cases profound co- health consequences of ecovid nomic choices,” said David her Stuckler, a senior researcher at Oxford University and comauthor of The Body Economic: Why Austerity Kills nd “The harms we have found utinclude HIV and malaria outtial breaks, shortages of essential are medicines, lost healthcare ble access, and an avoidable se, epidemic of alcohol abuse, depression and suicide,” he ersaid in a statement. “Austerng ity is having a devastating effect.” ckPrevious studies by Stuckals ler published in journals he such as The Lancet and the ave British Medical Journal have linked rising suicide rates in some parts of Europe to bitnd ing austerity measures, and found HIV epidemics to be spreading amid cutbacks in eoservices to vulnerable people. su But Stuckler and Basu h said negative public health e, effects are not inevitable,

even during the worst economic disasters. Using data from the Great Depression of the 1930s, to a and post-communist Russia from some examples of the current economic downturn, they say financial crises can be prevented from becoming epidemics - if governments respond effectively. As an example, they say, Sweden’s active labour market programmes helped the numbers of suicides to fall there during its recession, despite a big rise in unemployment. Neighbouring countries with no such programmes saw large increases in suicides. during And the 1930s dein pression the United States, each extra

$100 of relief spending from the American New Deal led to about 20 fewer deaths per 1,000 births, four fewer suicides per 100,000 people and 18 fewer pneumonia deaths per 100,000 people. “Ultimately what we show is that worsening health is not an inevitable consequence of economic recessions. It’s a political choice,” Basu said in the statement.

Up to a million cases of depression have been diagnosed during what researchers are calling the ‘Great Recession’

An influential U.S. panel is calling for HIV screening for all Americans aged 15 to 65, regardless of whether they are considered to be at high risk, a change that may help lift some of the stigma associated with HIV testing. The new guidelines from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), a government-backed panel of doctors and scientists, now align with longstanding recommendations by the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention for testing of all adults aged 15 to 65, regardless of their risk. Guidelines issued by the USPSTF in 2005 had recommended HIV screening for high-risk individuals. Experts said the change, published on Monday in the Annals of Internal Medicine, will likely trigger coverage for the tests as a preventive service under the Affordable Care Act. Under President Barack Obama’s healthcare law, insurers are required to cover preventive services that are recommended by the task force. Currently, the healthcare law recommends coverage of HIV testing for adolescents and adults who are at high risk of infection.

Mediterranean diet ‘may aid memory’ By John von Radowitz

Diet is an important modifiable activity that could help in preserving cognitive functioning in late life

A Mediterranean diet low in red meat and dairy food and high in omega-3 fatty acids can help preserve memory and thinking abilities, say researchers. Scientists in the United States studied the diets of 17,478 people with an average age of 64. Participants were given tests that measured mental ability over an average of four years. During the course of the study, 7 per cent developed memory and thinking deficits.

The study found people who more closely followed a Mediterranean diet had a 19 per cent reduced risk of mental impairment. A key element of the Mediterranean diet is omega-3 fatty acids, found in oily fish, flax seed, walnuts and pulses, which are known to benefit the brain and nervous system. The diet typically also contains high levels of fresh fruit and vegetables and low levels of saturated fat. The findings are published in the latest issue of the journal Neurology. Lead researcher Dr Georgios Tsivgoulis, from the universities of Alabama in the

US and Athens in Greece, said: “Since there are no definitive treatments for most dementing illnesses, modifiable activities, such as diet, that may delay the onset of symptoms of dementia are very important. “Diet is an important modifiable activity that could help in preserving cognitive functioning in late life. However, it is only one of several important lifestyle activities that might play a role in latelife mental functioning. Exercise, avoiding obesity, not smoking cigarettes and taking medications for conditions like diabetes and hypertension are also important.”

Evil Dead

Five young people head off to a dilapidated cabin in the woods. They’re staging an intervention designed to get Mia (Jane Levy) off the drugs that have consumed her life. Her four supporters are her estranged brother David (Shiloh Fernandez), his girlfriend Natalie (Elizabeth Blackmore), registered nurse Olivia (Jessica Lucas) and bookish Eric (Lou Taylor Pucci). In the cabin’s dim, dank basement, they discover a bunch of dead cats and the Ne Necronomicon, a book made fr from human skin that contain contains dark magic spells. Eric, in an act of extreme stupidity, starts reading things from th the Necronomicon out loud – a and suddenly the five friends are being hunted by a demo demon.

WHAT THE CRITICS SAID Pro: “The new n Evil Dead is not only ma made with an affectionate nod and a wink to the 1981 version, v it’s also the bloodie bloodiest, goriest, slapstickiest hor horror movie since, well, The Evi Evil Dead. Directed with gutsy p promise by newcomer Fede A Alvarez, the update doesn’t mess with the original’s ba bare-bones formula too much. It barrels right into the fam familiar story, placing five old pals in a run-down cabin, having them discover an old book filled with demonic illustrati lustrations and harrowing warning warnings, and once again releasing the gruesome genie from th the bottle… “Blood sprays in arterial geysers like the fountains outside the Bellagio in Vegas. One p possessed character licks a box cutter, butterflying her tongue in half. Ano Another has rats pouring out of her mouth like clow clowns piling out of a VW Bug Bug. Eyes are stabbed with hypodermic needles, limbs are severed with electri electric carving knives, and chain saws do what chain saws do do. Did I mention it’s a comedy comedy? “Some will have a hard time seeing it that way, I know. The au audience I saw it with scream screamed, gasped, and buried thei their faces in their dates’ necks. But horror films and TV sho shows such as The Walking Dea Dead are like a foreign languag language. Either they speak to you or they don’t. The new E Evil Dead’s delirious gross-o gross-out scenes spoke to me, and they go further than any m mainstream picture I can thi think of. How a movie this gra graphic and gooey managed to finagle an R rating is a myst mystery. But I’m not complain plaining. As a diehard fan

of the original and the genre, who am I to look such a wonderfully stomach-turning gift horse in the mouth?” Chris Nashawaty, Entertainment Weekly (US) Mixed/Anti: “Watching [the original] with an audience was a riotous experience: People screamed and laughed and gasped in shock at the demonic visions these unknown filmmakers had conjured up, making Freddy and Jason and Michael seem like schoolyard wimps. “Now comes the remake, more plainly titled Evil Dead, which ups the violence and gore and craziness but still feels strangely quaint. This is not merely another rip-off reboot of an established classic, like the recent A Nightmare on Elm Street and Texas Chainsaw Massacre redos … First-time director Fede Alvarez, who hails from Uruguay, has a strong visual style and a taste for the gruesome. He knows how to compose beautiful, nightmarish visuals. He pays clever homage to the original without imitating it slavishly, and he has higher production values and a bigger budget, which means all the more blood to splash across the screen. “So why isn’t there a single good scare in the entire film?... “The main selling point of the 1983 version was the game-changing gore, the over-the-top acting, the ingenious effects and its warped sense of humor. But the new Evil Dead contains none of those things. It’s a dour, humourless movie, and although it’s 100 times bloodier, it still got away with an R (even the squeamish ratings board wasn’t impressed). Evil Dead isn’t an actively bad movie, like so many current horror remakes are, and it contains images that stay with you (including one long shot near the end involving a chainsaw). But the movie is low on energy and thrills. It lacks the exuberance of the original, and it doesn’t creep you out, either. It’s a horror movie made by a director who obviously loves the genre, but can’t do much other than imitate. The Evil Dead was an absolute blast. Evil Dead is just a well-made gross-out, and it’s kind of a bummer.” Rene Rodriguez, Miami Herald (US) Anti: “For some 30 years now, small clusters of movie teenagers have made the journey to various cabins in various woods. The return ratio for such trips is one surviving, bloodied, traumatised, hospitalised teenager for every 10 dead friends left behind. And the ratio of entertaining, original movies about attractive young people and the hideous monsters that stalk them is about the same. For every clever remake or freshly twisted spin, there are innumerable gore fests with nothing original to say.

Evil Hitchcock Dead

“Hello, Evil Dead, 2013 edition. “This isn’t a strict remake of Sam Raimi’s hugely influential 1981 horror classic, but it does include the

basic framework and some visual nods to the original. On its own, it’s an irredeemable, sadistic torture chamber revelling in the bloody, cringe-inducing deaths of

some of the stupidest people ever to spend a rainy night in a remote cabin in the woods.” Richard Roeper, Chicago Sun-Times (US)

O

F THE current crop of actors who could possibly play Dean Moriarty, the blazing spirit of On the Road, who is (to paraphrase Jack Kerouac) mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at once, who burns, burns, burns like a ‘fabulous Roman candle’? Kerouac wanted Marlon Brando; Robert De Niro, Brad Pitt and Colin Farrell were all once slated for the part. But when the book was finally filmed for the first time, director Walter Salles chose Minnesota farm boy done good Garrett Hedlund. He’s certainly an intense, brooding hot biscuit. When I meet him in Paris, he seems uncomfortable in his gilded suite at Le Meurice, trapped between a velvet sofa and a plate of complex little cakes. His hands are trembling. He looks devastating in a YSL customised suit, which he has accessorised with ostentatiously dirty hair. Subtext: rebel without a hairbrush. He is here because he’s the new face of Yves Saint Laurent’s La Nuit de L’Homme aftershave, replacing Vincent Cassel, no less, but he seems a little overwhelmed by Paris Fashion Week. “It’s… interesting,” he equivocates. He seems anxious about something, impatient. Later, I discover that his girlfriend Kirsten Dunst was waiting for him to finish the interview and come out and play. They met on the set of On the Road last year and filming the cult novel was an experience that he can’t seem to let go. “It’s not easy to leave On the Road behind because I’m such a fan of the generation, such a fan of the material. It’s not like I’ll

Rebel without a hairbrush

And the Beat goes on (below from left): as Patroclos in Troy, in Tron Legacy, in Country Song with Gwyneth Paltrow and as Dean Moriarty with Sam Riley as Jack Kerouac in On the Road

He reads poetry, writes journals and takes endless pictures. On screen he sleeps with women, men and sings bluegrass. Is there anything Garrett Hedlund can’t do? Hermione Eyre meets the face of YSL Beauté

‘I romanticise the world. I try to do my best in the field of romance’ ever stop reading work by Kerouac, or Burroughs, or Ginsberg. After five years of reading the material and immersing yourself in the jazz, it’s not like you want to deplete or delete that experience.” Already a keen writer of diaries, poetry, songs and stories, Hedlund started living with Beat spontaneity, leading his fellow cast members on directionless walks at 4am. “Dude, you don’t even know where you’re going!” exclaimed Kristen Stewart one night in Montreal. “To say that Garrett is a free spirit,” said Walter Salles, “would be an understatement.” “I loved the process of making the movie - you can’t take back those miles. I just feel so honoured to have been a part of it. My love for Walter Salles, I can’t put a number on that. I wouldn’t trade it for the world: the people I met along the way, the cast I got to work with…” And particularly Kirsten Dunst? Apparently he took her canoeing on their first date - they capsized. Hedlund sails priapically through the movie, magnetising women and men alike. He marries both Kristen

Stewart and Kirsten Dunst, kisses Tom Sturridge (who plays Carlo Marx, the Allen Ginsberg character) and has a decidedly unromantic sexual encounter with Steve Buscemi. Did he have a shot of whiskey before filming that scene? “I wish there was whiskey! It was just all in a day’s work,” he says. After mixed reviews at festival screenings and in the UK, the film is now on general release in the US - how does he think the freeform sexuality will go down with Middle America? “We’ll see. We were just trying to fulfil the book, and there are so many fans… It’s an American classic, so for an American audience to finally see it will be special. What was in the book was in the script and what was in the script was in the daily schedule, so yeah, I knew what I gotta do, and I got on with it.” Garrett Hedlund grew up on a beef cattle ranch outside Wannaska, Minnesota, the youngest of three. His siblings are called Nathaniel

and Amanda, and his father is from Swedish stock, so where did ‘Garrett’ come from? “My mom named me,” he shrugs. “I’m sorry I don’t have a fun answer for that. By freakish happenstance, there was another Garrett in my class in elementary school, and I thought it was so common I wanted to change it.” His parents split up when he was a toddler, and he lived with his father, a wrestling coach and farmer. The down-home life is still part of him - he put in a great performance singing in the film Country Strong (in which he was the centre of a love triangle with Gwyneth Paltrow and Leighton Meester) but he wanted more from an early age, describing the rural isolation to me: “There were no malls, no mall scouts, no Los Angeles, no New York nearby…” At 14 he moved to live with his mother in the comparatively well-connected Scottsdale, Arizona, where he saved his waiter’s tips to pay an acting coach £40 an

hour “to work on speeches and script material to no purpose”. Modelling gigs for LL Bean and Teen magazine followed. “Then someone said to me, ‘If you want to catch a fox, you’ve got to be in the forest.’ So I graduated early and moved to LA when I was 18. Luckily enough, my first movie was Troy.” He was cast in that all-star turkey as the fatal boy-hero Patroclus, cousin of Brad Pitt (Achilles). It wasn’t a big part but it was an auspicious beginning. He gained 20lb of muscle to join the Myrmidons, then beefed up even further to play football star Don Billingsley in the film version of Friday Night Lights, which preceded the influential TV series of the same name. It turns out he likes living in “the forest”, keeping a permanent home in East Hollywood, where he retreats to “read, write, do whatever feeds the creative wheel”. He writes his diary compulsively, takes photographs, documents his life. “I spill it out as fast as I

can… I don’t really edit.” He took 1,200 photos during the filming of On the Road. “I keep an eye on what’s going on round me. I’m an aware person.” He is lost for words, however, when I ask him to describe the scent of La Nuit de L’Homme. “F***!” he says quietly into his fashionably sprouty facial hair, frustrated with his lack of articulacy. “I’ve heard people say it’s very masculine and sensitive at the same time… How does it smell to you?” We both inhale. He opens his big eyes frankly, and says with Oscarworthy conviction: “It’s just the best cologne I’ve ever smelled.” For YSL’s new La Nuit de L’Homme campaign, Hedlund appears in a short film in which he stalks around Paris’ Natural History Museum at night, surrounded by the bones of Triassic predators, in search of a beautiful woman. “This role is as much of a character as any other I’ve done, which appealed to me. Who is this mysterious

guy? What’s he capable of? Does he get lucky at the end of the night?” Well, indeed. We already know that Garrett Hedlund has got lucky professionally - having completed a brace of Tron remakes, his latest film is the Coen brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis, alongside Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake and John Goodman. “Working with the Coen brothers was a wonderful experience, they’re geniuses.” And when it comes to getting lucky personally? Let’s just say that Ms Dunst and Mr Hedlund appeared together on the front row of the rock’n’roll-themed Saint Laurent Paris Menswear show that evening, wearing corresponding monochrome outfits, beaming. Is he a romantic person? “I know I romanticise the world. I try to do my best in the field of romance,” he says. “I’m going to try to extend my schedule another day, so I can just walk around Paris, without demands, soaking it up. That would be special.”

Lawrence of Arabia (Mega, 21.50) It’s Good Friday, and a very good Friday for fans of director David Lean, studies of eccentric masculinity and intelligent epics in general. Lean’s two Oscars came for The Bridge on the River Kwai and Lawrence of Arabia - and they’re both showing on Mega today, with the caveats that (a) they’re bound to be broken up with ads and trailers, and (b) they’re bound to start late, assuming they don’t get replaced with something else at the last moment. Caveats aside, we can’t ignore Lawrence - a great film but an oddly perverse one, a lavish epic with an enigmatic hero, a sharply intelligent biography that nonetheless makes no claim to understand its hero. He’s T.E. Lawrence, a Briton

fighting with the Arabs during WW1 - and he’s played by Peter O’Toole at his most charismatic, Lean adding his own stamp to the proceedings with famous details like the rider appearing, mirage-like, out of the desert. A classic, albeit best experienced without the ads and trailers. Winner of seven Oscars in 1962.

Chicken With Plums (Novacinema1, 22.00) It’s a mystery why this film is so chirpy when the story it tells is so sad. Mathieu Amalric is a famous musician, Maria de Medeiros (in a very thankless role) the nagging wife who loves him but has never been loved in return. She breaks his beloved violin during an argu-

Chicken with Plums

ment, so he decides to lie down and wait for death to take him; this takes about a week, during which we get flashbacks to his (mostly frustrating) life and lots of cartoonish, magical-realist tricks, from a broad slapstick glimpse of white-trash America to an animated riff on ‘Appointment in Samarra’. Some of it is imaginative, even funny - yet the underlying plot is so grim that the tricks feel like evasion techniques trying to sweeten the pill, and the guaranteed-tearjerker climax (featuring a girl called Irane who was always our hero’s great love, her memory haunting his exile) ends up feeling like just another trick. Tonally shaky and a bit misjudged; still among the more acclaimed European films of its year. In French. Made in 2011.

ARIES March 21 - April 20

LEO July 23 - August 22

SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 21

You might find yourself feeling a bit confused or unsure of yourself by the end of today. Vague doubts can creep in, but equally, you can also access your imagination to its full. This is the influence of Neptune at work, and it will come and go at various times for some years to come. The trick is in listening to the messages your intuition gives you.

This is not a good day to make hazy or lazy long term financial decisions. Yet if you can really concentrate on focusing on goals, assembling the resources to achieving them, and then putting lots of energy into making things happen, the sky really is the limit. If so, you can apply yourself unstintingly to what you want to go for, and barriers can fall away.

A family or personal issue could frustrate you or slow you down before the day is out. Try not to let this knock you off course from what you are trying to achieve. Continue to muster as much self-discipline as possible. Don’t let any distractions prevent you from concentrating on the really important issues. People may carp, but be single minded.

TAURUS April 21 - May 21

VIRGO August 23 - September 23

CAPRICORN December 22 - January 20

The friends that share your love of music, art or culture can be a big pull today. Then again, if you feel you could be doing more with the talents you have in these areas, don’t hold back from researching your options. Any project or situation which has dragged over the last few weeks can also now start to edge forwards. You can feel upbeat about your prospects.

You may find yourself up for a challenge in the next few days. Yet anything which requires you to step outside of the bounds of what you currently know well, can actually be really good for you. Perhaps there is something you have long had a secret fascination for trying. Well, if so, now you can find the motivation to try to make it happen.

Pluto is such an important player for us all at this time. It continues to reside in your zodiac sign and today is playing a good cop, bad cop routine first with Mars, and secondly with Uranus. If you are someone who finds it hard to welcome new themes and ideas, these influences may give you a jolt, but then also the wherewithal to have a go after all.

GEMINI May 22 - June 21

LIBRA September 24 - October 23

AQUARIUS January 21 - February 19

You can use the added sensitivity the heavens are giving you to tune really well into the undercurrents and politics of life. It really isn’t a case of what people say just now, as what they mean. Look out for hints and unspoken gestures. Someone could also be exceptionally kind, but unfortunately, if there is a weak link in a friendship, it may be revealed.

Some kind of metamorphosis can go on in your life at this time. The changes can be in your environment - for example actively changing your home or moving altogether. Yet other possibilities can unfold too, this can see you planning to have a child, learning more about your deeper psyche or that of anyone you are involved with closely.

Your mind may find it harder to focus on practicalities today. Be cautious around what you eat or drink, your system could be more sensitive. Someone who generally irritates you, could also see you reaching for the comfort food. And yet, with someone you are bonding well with, a lot of tenderness and goodwill can be building between you.

CANCER June 22 - July 22

SCORPIO October 24 - November 22

PISCES February 20 - March 20

The two planets that rule the sign of Scorpio are working actively together today, and they can be a huge help to you. With the Sun also in a very productive location, this is an excellent opportunity to become more active to push yourself to set your own bar higher. Any hopes you hold which are very dear to you, have a great chance of being realised.

Your conversations with others can be more intense. But then does anyone ever accuse you of being like this? Well, even if they do, something good can come from your encounters. Information learned or shared, an exciting spark with someone you meet, or using your directness to break down any resistance that you encounter. Be proactive.

Throughout this month, balancing that side of you that wants life to be one way, with how it really is, could be an issue. Today, you may have a strong desire to escape into your own world and fantasies in order to cope with all this. However, you may be pleasantly surprised that this can be a brief interlude, and a lot of great stuff gets done.

Sport Proud Celtics are making a stand against the Knicks

IN BRIEF O’Sullivan and Trump level in semi RONNIE O’Sullivan and Judd Trump are locked at 4-4 after the first session of their World Championship semi-final yesterday. O’Sullivan, who said after his quarter-final win over Stuart Bingham that he had only returned to the sport for the money, got off to a flying start. ‘The Rocket’ from Essex took four of the first five frames, with Bristol’s Trump only winning a tense second courtesy of a re-spotted black. But Trump won the last three frames to leave the best-of-33 tie finely poised. The match resumes at 10am BST this morning at the Crucible. Having returned to snooker in Sheffield after almost a year off, defending champion O’Sullivan has comfortably despatched Marcus Campbell, Ali Carter and Bingham on his way to the semis. Neither player made a century in the session, but four-time champion O’Sullivan needs to make just three more 100s to go beyond seventime champion Hendry’s record of 127 centuries at the ‘Home of Snooker’. His pot success of 94%, compared to Trump’s 88%, suggests it may not be too long before the feat is surpassed.

Gritty veterans refusing to go out quietly By Larry Fine IT might be the last Celtics stand for the tandem of Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett but they showed their class and determination as Boston humbled the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. Age, a lack of depth on the roster and the strains of the National Basketball Association salary cap have put the Boston future of Garnett and Pierce in doubt but the gritty veterans refuse to go out quietly this postseason. Teetering on the brink of elimination down 3-0 in their best-of-seven series, the Celtics won an overtime thriller in Boston to stay alive and followed with a 92-86 win to send the series back to Boston for Game Six tonight. The 36-year-old Garnett, in his 18th season after entering the NBA out of high school, scored 16 points and hauled down 18 rebounds in nearly 39 minutes on the floor. Pierce, 35, who has played all 15 years of his NBA career in Boston, matched his running mate with 16 points and logged more than 44 minutes on court as the Celtics outbattled the Knicks using just seven players. “Every game since we’ve been down 3-0 has been Game Seven for us,” said Boston coach Doc Rivers, whose team fell behind 11-0 before clawing back for another do-or-die win. Pierce said the fighting

spirit comes from the top down. “When it was 3-0, we could have packed it in, but this team has the will,” said Pierce. “That comes from our coach, it comes from our leaders, myself and Kevin to keep going.” Another defeat in this series could also mark the last game for the Boston partnership of Pierce and Garnett. Pierce is scheduled to make $15.3 million in the final year of a four-year, $61.3 million extension. With only $5 million of that guaranteed, the Celtics could pay it off if they choose to begin rebuilding in earnest. The 6-foot-11 (2.11 m) Garnett, who has two years remaining on a three-year, $34 million deal, has said that if Pierce leaves Boston he could consider retirement. Before the Miami Big Three of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh took the NBA by storm, there was the Celtics Big Three formed in 2007 when Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen were acquired in trades by Boston to join Paul Pierce. That 2007-08 season, the trio quickly jelled for a 66-16 campaign and the NBA title, the record 17th in the history of the illustrious franchise but first in 22 years. Two years later they got to the finals, losing to the Los Angeles Lakers, and last year they extended the Heat to seven games in the conference finals before losing to the eventual NBA cham-

pions. The off-season saw the first crack in their championship foundation when sharp-shooting Allen left the Celtics to sign with Miami, while this year’s hopes took a plunge with point guard Rajon Rondo suffering a torn knee ligament. But the stout efforts of Boston’s one-two punch of Pierce and Garnett have kept this series from being a sweep. Garnett, who has been battling hip, ankle and foot pain, had been showing signs of age before coming up big in the last two games. “Father Time is undefeated, and there’s nothing you can do about it,” former NBA player and television commentatorCharles Barkley said about the aging of Garnett. Pierce and Rivers made a point of saluting Garnett, who requires a long pregame routine to stretch and prepare to play the game. “That’s what Kevin does,” Pierce said. “He’s a legend in this game. He’s one of the greatest players that ever played the game. You’re seeing one of the great ones get challenged and what they’re able to do. “Kevin has inspired me every day I get a chance to play with him, practice with him, see his preparation. That’s the inspiring part. He’s been that way since we were able to obtain him and it’s nonstop with him.”

Still got it: Boston Celtics star Kevin Garnett is in his 18th season after entering the NBA out of high school

South Africa can get rid of ‘chokers’ tag without Kallis By Mark Gleeson

Jacques Kallis will miss June’s Champions Trophy tournament in England for undisclosed personal reasons

JACQUES Kallis’ withdrawal from South Africa’s squad for the Champions Trophy has been described as a major blow but it also gives the team the chance to move forward free of past baggage. The veteran all-rounder will miss June’s tournament in England for undisclosed personal reasons. Coach Gary Kirsten said South Africa were losing a major asset, describing Kallis as two players in one, but it also means youthful squad can look forward to the oneday tournament without any bitter reminders of past failures. Kallis was a senior player as South Africa under-per-

formed in a succession of one-day tournaments to earn the team a reputation as ‘chokers’ in limited-overs competition. The 37-year-old is the last of the players associated with the bitter disappointments at the last four World Cups in which South Africa have contrived to throw away advantageous situations and crash out of the tournament, sometimes in farcical circumstances. The Champions Trophy allows a fresh start although the past failures still rankle, particularly as they are continually compared with South Africa’s status as the top Test-playing nation. “At some point, we have to cross over that line but you guys could do us a favour

and take the pressure off by not talking so much about it,” Kirsten told reporters at the team announcement. South Africa have worked hard at overhauling their oneday side since a surprise loss to New Zealand in the 2011 World Cup quarter-finals. AB de Villiers has been appointed captain and many players given international exposure to broaden the selection base. Kallis has not played a ODI in more than a year but was expected to return after participating in the Indian Premier League. “He’s been a great ambassador for the country but if he feels he’s not up to the tournament then we have to respect that,” added Kirsten.

Basso pulls out of Giro DOUBLE champion Ivan Basso of Italy has pulled out of the Giro d’Italia because of a serious saddle sore two days before the start of the race. Basso was suffering from a cyst, which made it impossible for him to pedal correctly, his Cannondale team said in a statement yesterday. Compatriot Damiano Caruso would replace Basso in the squad, Cannondale said. The 35-year-old climber won the Giro in 2006 and 2010 but was not regarded as a top contender this year, having shown poor form this season. Basso also twice finished on the Tour de France podium, taking third place in 2004 and second place in 2005. The Giro starts in Naples tomorrow and finishes in Brescia on May 26.

‘England’s greatest chance of World Cup glory in 2015’ RFU chief’s rallying call as venues named

By Iain Rogers

By Chris Jones ENGLAND are in the best position to win the 2015 World Cup on home soil, the chief executive of the Rugby Football Union said yesterday. Ian Ritchie’s claim came as the 13 venues for the tournament were announced in London. The final will be at Twickenham on October 31 and Ritchie is confident Stuart Lancaster’s side can taste glory for the first time since 2003. “We have no excuses for not being well prepared and while I am not saying Stuart Lancaster will have an open cheque book, we will invest in the game and the England team because winning the Cup is the ultimate,” said Ritchie. “We need to deliver and we will all be judged on this tournament. We have a unique opportunity with the Cup being played at home and we are doing our ultimate to be in the best position.” There will be 17 matches in London with Twickenham hosting 10, including the opening match, which sees England face a qualifier possibly Fiji - but Wembley will host just two. The first of those will see the All Blacks play Argentina on

WADA disappointed with Puerto verdict, considers appeal

Child’s play: England 2015 ambassador Lawrence Dallaglio poses with the famous trophy at yesterday’s venue announcement at Twickenham September 20 and four days later the defending champions will move to the Olympic Stadium to play a qualifier from Africa. Major construction work at the Olympic Stadium - to create a new home for West Ham in 2016 - will be needed to reduce the capacity from its current 80,000 to the 54,000 and tournament organisers are confident the venue will be ready. England Rugby 2015 chief executive Debbie Jevans said: “It won’t be a building site

and the roof will be in place. They are installing a Desso pitch similar to Twickenham and the programme for the work is in place. There were some complexities to be sorted out including West Ham’s decision but all of those conversations have taken place.” The Olympic Stadium was chosen to ensure the event generates the £80 million guarantee demanded by the International Rugby Board. With Wembley contracted to the NFL in October, that

limited the number of games that could be held there. Therefore, tournament organisers needed another major stadium to add to their list and have thrashed out an agreement with the Olympic Stadium that could also see England play a warm-up match to act as a test event. Jevans said: “We had a fee base to work with for hiring venues and the Olympic Stadium is the same as others and they are keen to be seen as a multi-sport stadium. “Wembley has a contract

with the NFL which means the stadium must be free for a match in October and we’re delighted to have two games there. We will meet the financial targets (set by the IRB).” All of England’s matches, bar one, will take place at England’s HQ. Jevans defended the decision to take the other game, against a play-off winner, to the Manchester City Stadium. She said: “The ambition has always been to take England to the North West.”

Returning Baghdatis through to Munich doubles semi-finals By Nemanja Bjedov

Cyprus star Marcos baghdatis has missed most of the last six weeks due to a shoulder injury

MARCOS Baghdatis and American Eric Butorac are through to the BMW Open doubles semi-finals after they beat Czech Lukas Dlouhy and Viktor Troicki of Serbia 4-6, 6-3, 12-10 (points) yesterday afternoon. A single break of serve was enough for both duos to claim a set apiece. Dlouhy and Troicki took the opener, but then allowed the Cypriot/American duo to get back in the match. After trailing by eight points to five in the decider, Baghdatis and Butorac won four consecutive points to earn their first match point, but they failed to convert it and eventually needed two more before sealing the victory.

Their next opponents will be the winners of the match between the second-seeded Austrian Jurgen Melzer and Leander Paes of India and Colombian duo Robert Farah and Juan Sebastian Cabal. The 27-year-old Baghdatis suffered a first round singles exit at the event on Tuesday at the hands of Kazakhstani qualifier Evgeny Korolev 7-5, 7-6(3). “I had not played a match for a long time because of my shoulder injury and it was my first match on clay too,” said Baghdatis, who acknowledged it was also more difficult playing a qualifier, who had already adjusted to the surface and conditions. “It was very difficult to find a good rhythm because my opponent was very aggressive and he was in control of

the match all the time. Towards the end of the match, I felt more in control and I had some chances to win the second set,” added the World No.38 Cypriot who has been sidelined for most of the past six weeks with a right shoulder injury. He confirmed that his shoulder is feeling much stronger for the ongoing clay-court season. “The important thing is that I am practicing well. I played doubles on Monday and my match today and my shoulder is feeling strong. I think it is important for me to stay as long as possible on the court to get some momentum started. “It is a difficult surface for my game and it is a big challenge for me to adapt and find a way to win matches,” Baghdatis concluded.

THE World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has voiced its disappointment with this week’s decision by the judge in Spain’s ‘Operation Puerto’ doping trial to destroy all the evidence from the case instead of making it available to other sports bodies and said it is considering an appeal. Spanish doctor Eufemiano Fuentes, the central figure in the trial, was given a one-year prison term for endangering public health and the judge also ordered the evidence, including bags of blood possibly belonging to athletes from sports other than cycling, to be destroyed. Her decision not to release evidence to anti-doping authorities for further investigation damaged hopes that the case would unmask other athletes involved in illegal doping, and prompted widespread condemnation. “WADA has carefully considered the decision rendered by the Criminal Court in Madrid in relation with the Operation Puerto,” the agency’s director general, David Howman, said in a statement. “The decision to order the destruction of all the blood bags is particularly disappointing and unsatisfactory for WADA, and the whole anti-doping community,” Howman added. “Access to this evidence motivated WADA’s involvement in this case. “This would ensure appropriate sports sanction processes against the cheats who used Dr Fuentes’ services.” The Spanish anti-doping agency (AEA) has already said it will appeal against the judge’s ruling to destroy the evidence and Howman said WADA might follow suit. “WADA is currently fully reviewing the decision and any possible appeal or other action with its Spanish legal advisors, and the Spanish National Anti-Doping Organisation (AEA),” he said, adding that the appeal deadline was May 17. WADA, the AEA, the Spanish cycling federation (RFEC), the International Cycling Union (UCI) and the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) were all represented in the three-month trial in Madrid. Fuentes, who denied doping, said in his opening testimony that he had clients in cycling but also in sports including football, tennis, athletics and boxing. Spain has been hoping the trial will help to dispel the impression that the nation was soft on doping and boost Madrid’s bid to win the right to host the 2020 Olympic Games.

Mourinho exit would leave Real president in a hole

APOEL pay tribute to departing Jovanovic By Nemanja Bjedov

‘I want to be where people love me to be’ By Iain Rogers JOSE Mourinho’s possible departure from Real Madrid at the end of the season would leave club president Florentino Perez in a tricky position as he seeks an adequate replacement for the man he has constantly lauded as “the best coach in the world”. Obsessed with winning the 10th continental crown that has eluded Real since 2002, construction magnate Perez hired the controversial Portuguese at great expense in 2010 after he led Inter Milan to the Champions League title. After Tuesday’s elimination from Europe’s elite club competition by Borussia Dortmund, when Real narrowly failed to overturn a 4-1 deficit in their semi-final second leg at the Bernabeu, Mourinho dropped his strongest hint yet that his time in the Spanish capital is drawing to a close. Karim Benzema and Sergio Ramos scored late goals to give Real hope but they fell just short and Dortmund went through to the May 25 final 4-3 on aggregate. Asked after the game if he would stay on next term he has a contract until 2016 - Mourinho told ITV Sport: “Maybe not. I don’t know but I want to be where people love me to be.” At a later news conference he added: “I am loved by

some clubs, especially one (Chelsea). In Spain it is different, some people hate me, many of you in this (press) room.” Mourinho’s reference to Chelsea appeared to give credence to recent reports saying he is poised to return to the London club where he won Premier League titles in 2005 and 2006 but came up short in the Champions League. If he does leave Real at the end of the season, he will have led them to one La Liga title, when they set a record points tally, and, if they beat Atletico Madrid in this month’s final, two King’s Cups. It is a decent record by most standards but at Real it is success in Europe that counts above all else and on that score he has disappointed, suffering elimination in the Champions League semifinals for the past three seasons. Mourinho’s combative character may have had a negative impact on the club’s image that will leave behind a damaging legacy, according to marketing experts. Appointed sporting manager as well as first-team coach, an unusual step for a club in Spain where the power of Mourinho’s counterparts is much more limited, he has responsibility for the development of the Real product. Mourinho has alienated some of Real’s more traditional supporters, who have whistled at him at the club’s

Bernabeu stadium, while gaining hero status among the ‘Ultras Sur’, a group known for their extreme right-wing views. If he does decide to jump ship his successor may be taking on a poisoned chalice, while Mourinho’s stint at Real will be remembered for all the wrong reasons. Those included sneaking up behind Tito Vilanova, then assistant Barca coach, during a brawl and poking a finger in his eye, continual complaints about refereeing bias, ugly clashes with journalists and Real officials and dark hints that Barca get favourable treatment from governing body UEFA. He has also sidelined club captain and goalkeeper Iker Casillas, a hero to many supporters. Some reports in Spain have suggested Perez is lining up Carlo Ancelotti, another former Chelsea manager currently in charge at Paris St Germain, to replace Mourinho. The Italian is a very different personality to the outspoken Mourinho and won the Champions League with AC Milan in 2003 and 2007, losing to Liverpool in the 2005 final. After the clashes and controversy of the Mourinho years, perhaps the understated and respectful Ancelotti is just what Real need to restore calm and finally get their hands on the ‘decima’, or 10th European title.

On his way out? Speculation is rife that Jose Mourinho will leave Real Madrid to return to Chelsea

Boca edge cup duel with world champions Corinthians By Rex Gowar

Argentine giants Boca Juniors celebrate a 1-0 first leg last-16 win over Copa Libertadores holders Corinthians

BOCA Juniors, without injured talisman Juan Roman Riquelme, beat holders Corinthians 1-0 in the first leg of their Libertadores Cup last16 tie at a wet La Bombonera yesterday. Striker Nicolas Blandi tapped home from two metres in the 59th minute after midfielder Cristian Erbes’ cross bisected the two central defenders. Six-time champions Boca, struggling in their domestic league, won for the first time in six matches more through grit and experience than good play. World club champions Corinthians, who won their first Libertadores Cup beating Boca in last year’s final, had two good chances to equalise soon after the goal. Boca goalkeeper Agustin Orion made a diving save to deny Romarinho in the 63rd

and Peru striker Paolo Guerrero hit the post six minutes later. The Argentine side’s midfielder Pablo Ledesma had the ball in the net again eight minutes from time but it was ruled out for offside. Ledesma then picked up two bookings in succession, first for taking off his shirt to celebrate before realising his goal was invalid and then for a foul on Ralf, and was sent off. “In this matter of two legs it’s good to score an away goal. We lost but it was good to have conceded only one. We can turn this round at home,” Corinthians midfielder Danilo told reporters. Boca will be hoping playmaker Riquelme has fully recovered from a thigh injury for the return match in Sao Paulo in two weeks. Brazilian former champions Gremio, without suspended coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo, beat Independiente Santa Fe of Colombia 2-1 at home in

Porto Alegre despite being a man short for more than half an hour. Chile striker Eduardo Vargas put the home side in front in the 28th minute at the new Arena do Gremio. Argentine midfielder Omar Perez equalised for Santa Fe with a penalty early in the second half after centre back Cris brought down Jefferson Cuero and was sent off for the second time in the competition before Fernando gave Gremio victory 10 minutes from time with a low drive from 25 metres. Luxemburgo was banned for six matches for his part in a brawl at the end of Gremio’s last group phase match, a 1-1 draw away to Chile’s Huachipato two weeks ago. The former Real Madrid and Brazil coach, who will only be able to sit on the Gremio bench again if they reach the final, was alleged to have sparked the brawl by making fun of eliminated Huachipato.

THE coach of newlycrowned Cypriot champions APOEL, Ivan Jovanovic, has resigned after guiding the club to its 22nd national championship title last weekend. A statement posted on the club’s official website said: “Despite our deep regret that we could not continue the cooperation with Mr. Ivan Jovanovic, we are obligated to accept this negative outcome for APOEL, but also to respect Mr. Jovanovic’s wishes. “What Mr. Jovanovic has achieved with APOEL greatly exceed what can be considered footballing success. He has earned APOEL a prominent spot on Europe’s football map and we consider it a special privilege to have worked with him,” the statement added. The Serbian, who took over as coach of APOEL for the second time in 2008, won four league titles and a Cyprus Cup with the Nicosia giants over his six seasons in charge. He also masterminded last year’s remarkable run to the Champions League quarter-finals. Jovanovic has been heavily tipped to take over at Greek side PAOK after they sacked coach Giorgos Donis on Monday in the wake of their Greek Cup elimination. PAOK finished second in the Greek championship and will try to reach the UEFA Champions League qualifiers through the playoffs - which will also also include Asteras Tripoli, Atromitos and PAS Giannina. APOEL chairman Phivos Erotokritou paid tribute to Jovanovic: “As a club we were very lucky that we had a chance to work together with a man with morals and distinction such as Mr. Jovanovic. He has raised the bar with all the successes, seriousness, professionalism and ethics, and we would like to wish him from the depths of our hearts a very successful continuation of his professional career, but also all the best on a personal level.” The APOEL statement did not elaborate on the reasons that led 50-yearold Jovanovic to leave the club, but he was quoted as saying that “it was best both for himself and APOEL that he stood down.” Jovanovic started his coaching career in Greece in 2001 where he led Niki Volou, Panahaiki and Iraklis on two occasions, while in 2011 he was crowned coach of the year by the Serbian Football Federation.

Sport Dramatic Dortmund incapable of doing things the easy way

HUMBLED BARCA ‘DON’T NEED MAJOR SHAKE UP’

By Karolos Grohmann

This wasn’t in the script: Barcelona were beaten 7-0 on aggregate by German champions Bayern Munich over their two-legged Champions League semi

By Iain Rogers BARCELONA’S Champions League humbling by Bayern Munich on Wednesday will not prompt wholesale changes to the squad and the 7-0 aggregate reverse would have been avoided had the team not been decimated by injury, coach Tito Vilanova said. Barca suffered their worst ever European defeat over two legs in the last-four clash against the German champions but were missing their Argentine World Player of the Year Lionel Messi for the 3-0 second leg defeat at the Camp Nou. Top scorer in Europe’s elite club competition the past four seasons, Messi had not recovered sufficiently after straining a hamstring last month and had to watch from the bench as Bayern ended Barca’s 21-match unbeaten run at home in conti-

Catalans reflect on worst European defeat nental competition. Pre-tournament favourites Barca were also without defensive midfielder Sergio Busquets and longer-term injury casualties Carles Puyol and Javier Mascherano, who play in central defence. “I don’t think we need to change any players,” a subdued Vilanova told a news conference. “What we do need is to get our injured players back because they are top performers,” he added. “Bayern Munich came here with all their players available but we are here without some of our key players. I still think our squad is very good. “I am convinced that if we had been at 100 per cent we would have competed in a different way.” Messi picked up his injury

in last month’s quarter-final first leg at Paris St Germain. Although he has made sporadic appearances since, including at the weekend against Athletic Bilbao, he has at times looked well below his scintillating best. Vilanova said Messi had felt a “strange sensation” towards the end of the Bilbao game, when he came on as a substitute with half an hour remaining and scored one of Barca’s goals. While he was not injured as such - he received the allclear from club medical staff last week - it was decided he was not fit enough to help the team as he would have wanted, the coach added. “I spoke with Leo on Tuesday and he trained but didn’t feel good at all. We waited until after Wednesday’s training session and I also spoke with

the physios. “We then decided that there was a risk he could aggravate his injury and he wasn’t in a position to help the team. “Given the result from the first leg it was better to leave him initially on the bench. When a player has a problem he can’t play and that’s that.” The forwards Barca did use on Wednesday - Spain trio Cesc Fabregas, David Villa and Pedro - had little joy against an excellent Bayern defence and it is hard not to conclude that the club needs to sign at least one more goal scorer. Another option is to promote a youngster from the B team and 19-year-old Gerard Deulofeu is being touted as a hot prospect. Their defence is almost certain to need reinforcements

with Puyol, 35, getting on, the less-than-convincing Mascherano originally a midfielder and youngster Marc Bartra looking green. The shock of the reverse to Bayern will certainly prompt some soul-searching among the squad as they turn their attention to wrapping up the La Liga title. With five games left they have an 11-point lead over second-placed Real Madrid and play at home to Real Betis on Sunday. “I think we need to take some decisions at an individual level and take a step forward, all of us,” centre back Gerard Pique, who scored an own goal against Bayern, told reporters. “Get better and realise that there is somebody else who is superior. As easy as that,” he added. “We will try and work on it on next year and compete with the best. And that is Bayern right now.”

German media hails Bayern success

Borussia Dortmund (top) and Bayern Munich celebrate reaching the Champions League final this week

‘THE king is dead, long live the king’ was how a Die Welt editorial summarised Bayern Munich’s completion of a 7-0 aggregate thrashing of Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final. Bayern will now face fellow German side Borussia Dortmund in the final at Wembley on May 25 after they overcame Real Madrid over two legs. Die Welt’s editorial said the semi-final results had given Germany a ‘reason to be proud’, with a German winner for the first time in 12 years now guaranteed. It added: “Bayern humiliated their opponents for the second time in the space of a week, doing the things which had set Barcelona apart, only better.” German tabloid newspaper Bild wrote: “For the first time in the history of the Champions League, there will be an all-German final. It was a demonstration of power against what once was the best team in the world.” The Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung hailed a ‘dream final’, continuing the general feel-

ing that Bayern and Dortmund have ‘humiliated’ Spanish football. ‘Fussball is coming home’ found its way onto the front page of the Suddeutsche Zeitung, which dedicated several pages to Bayern’s monumental triumph. In contrast to the euphoria and acclaim of the German press, the media in Spain were understandably less impressed by the performances from a Barca side who have widely been regarded as the best team in the world over the last five years. Catalan-based daily Sport led with the headline ‘Barca, humiliated and out of Europe’, adding in their copy: “Barcelona said goodbye to the Champions League in the cruellest and most painful way possible: suffering another heavy defeat against Bayern who, on aggregate, have unloaded on them 7-0.” The two Madrid-based sports papers, Marca and AS both hailed Bayern while describing Barca as: ‘impotent’, ‘humiliated by a cyclone’, ‘grey, without bite, inane and soulless’.

BORUSSIA Dortmund completed their sensational roller coaster ride to the Champions League final this week with a performance that left club bosses on the brink of emotional collapse as the team muscled their way back into Europe’s elite. Dortmund had looked assured for most of the match against Real Madrid at the Bernabeu, but two late goals set up a frantic finale as the Germans clung on for a 4-3 aggregate win that put them in the final for the first time since 1997. A sensational 4-1 first leg home victory, where coveted striker Robert Lewandowski found the net four times, set the foundations for their trip to Wembley on May 25 but Real’s stirring fightback made it uncomfortable viewing for some in the Dortmund camp. “I guess we can only do drama,” said club boss Hans-Joachim Watzke, who has been responsible for Dortmund’s financial renaissance after the club appeared on the brink of collapse in 2005. “It was the first time I had to stop watching due to heart problems. I spent the last 20 minutes locked in the toilet, covered my ears and looked at my watch. All kinds of thoughts passed through my head,” he added. Dortmund staged an even more dramatic finale in the quarter-final against Malaga, scoring twice in stoppage time to snatch a stunning 3-2 aggregate win. “I thought about doing copying Watzke as well a couple of times,” coach Juergen Klopp said when asked to describe the final minutes of the game. “We made it very tight in the end but as you saw, Borussia Dortmund happen to be an all-inclusive team,” he added in reference to his team’s ability to ensure dramatic endings. “This game had everything. But if you want to reach a Champions League final you also have to do everything.” Dortmund, on the brink of bankruptcy nine years ago, have bounced back in style with the Ruhr Valley club winning back-to-back domestic titles from 2011 before launching their assault on Europe. While Dortmund are undoubtedly the surprise team of the season, their rise cannot be considered a classic rags-to-riches Cinderella story. It is rather the story of a club’s eager attempt to return to the very top of European football, a position they last occupied in 1997.

Sport Heynckes: Bayern spurred by final defeat to Chelsea By Iain Rogers BAYERN Munich began to lay the foundations for this season’s impressive run to the Champions League final immediately after their defeat to Chelsea in last year’s showpiece, coach Jupp Heynckes said yesterday. After Bayern inflicted the biggest aggregate defeat on Barcelona in European competition, a jubilant Heynckes said the painful reverse on penalties to Chelsea at their own Allianz Arena in Munich had given him the motivation to try to go one better this term. The Bundesliga champions thrashed Barca 4-0 in last week’s semi-final first leg in Germany before ending the La Liga club’s 21-match unbeaten run at home in the Champions League with a crushing 3-0 win to set up an all-German final against Borussia Dortmund at Wembley on May 25. “I was bitterly disappointed after losing the final last season but we started working straight away,” Heynckes told a news conference. “From the first day, you could tell that everyone was determined to change things,” the experienced 67year-old added. “I think my desire to do better than last season infected the players.” Bayern’s humbling of Barca, who have won two of the last four editions of Europe’s elite club competition, prompted suggestions that the German club are poised to take over as the continent’s pre-eminent force. Their commanding performance over both legs, particularly the way they closed out World Player of the Year Lionel Messi in

Munich, was hugely impressive and they remain on course for a treble of Bundesliga, Champions League and German Cup. “We are a team that has a tremendous unity,” said Heynckes, who knows Barca well from his time coaching at their La Liga rivals Real Madrid and Athletic Bilbao. “We work fantastically well together and have a huge hunger for success,” he added. “We play high-speed football, are very well organised, tactically astute, close down space well and the counter attack has also worked very well this season.” Heynckes is stepping down at the end of the current campaign and will be replaced by former Barca coach Pep Guardiola. Guardiola took a year out to rest after four trophyfilled years in charge of his boyhood club and handed the reins to his close friend Tito Vilanova. Heynckes has set the bar high for him and he will find it tough to match Bayern’s success this term even if they are thwarted by Dortmund in the Champions League and VfB Stuttgart in the domestic Cup final. After Bayern’s success this term, Heynckes will be a sought-after man but refused to be drawn on his future, only saying that he had had no contact with his former club Real. “I know what I am going to do after the Cup final (on June 1),” he said. “I have been in football for 50 years and I think one day you have to think it will be over.” HUMBLED BARCA ‘DON’T NEED MAJOR SHAKE UP’ PAGE 31

SPURS SUPERSTAR ADDS THE WRITERS’ AWARD TO PFA DOUBLE

Priceless: Tottenham coach Andre Villas-Boas says Gareth Bale will not be sold in the summer. The Welsh wizard was yesterday named the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year

Bale completes awards hat-trick By Mike Collett and Martyn Herman

T

OTTENHAM Hotspur forward Gareth Bale was named England’s Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers’ Association yesterday. The Wales international, 23, topped the poll of journalists with a narrow victory over Manchester United’s Dutch international forward Robin van Persie, who won it last year when he was at Arsenal. Chelsea’s Spanish midfielder Juan Mata came third. Bale is the first Spurs player to win the award since David Ginola in 1999 and the first Wales international to claim it since Everton goalkeeper Neville Southall in 1985. “I’ve been very fortunate to play in such a fantastic team and I owe a lot to my team-mates and obviously the manager who has shown such faith in me,” Bale told the FWA. FWA chairman Andy Dunn told Reuters: “In a contest for votes that took so many late twists and turns, Gareth’s penchant for the spectacular captured the imagination. “He is a player who is rising inexorably towards the

rarefied levels of world stars such as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Lets hope he lights up the Premier League for many seasons to come.” Bale has scored 24 goals in all competitions for Spurs and five for Wales, many of them spectacular strikes from outside the penalty area. His performances helped Tottenham reach the Europa League quarter-finals and have kept them in the race for a top-four finish in the Premier League and a possible return to the Champions League. He will receive the prestigious FWA trophy at a gala dinner in London next Thursday. The award completed a personal treble for Bale who on Sunday was also named Player of the Year and Young Player of the Year by his peers in the Professional Footballers’ Association. He also won the Player of the Year Award in 2011. The Footballer of the Year award is the oldest of its kind in world football and was first given to Stanley Matthews in 1948. According to coach Andre Villas-Boas, Tottenham will not be selling their prized asset.

The club’s determination to keep the player will be severely tested if they fail in their bid for Champions League qualification, but Villas-Boas says he has received assurances that the winger’s future is not dependent on a top-four finish. “The information I have from the club that was mistakenly written about last week is that the player will remain here irrespective of Champions League qualification being achieved or not,” Villas-Boas told reporters at Tottenham’s training ground yesterday. “This is the information I shared with you all of the season. The more rewards, the more recognition the player has, the more media attention, but this club can only move forward by keeping hold of its players and next season for Tottenham, Gareth can be even more assertive. “I would be extremely surprised if he left this summer, but in football anything can happen. It is impossible to predict. This is the assurance I have from the club. “Whatever the price tag the player has doesn’t matter to us because he is our player,” added Villas-Boas. “He’s a player we have to

keep hold of for the remaining seasons to make sure we are to achieve our objectives.” Tottenham are just outside the Champions League qualification spots in fifth place with 62 points but would nail down a top-four finish if they won their remaining four games. They face Southampton tomorrow when victory would temporarily lift them above fourth-placed Arsenal. Next Wednesday’s clash with third-placed Chelsea, who they trail by three points, could be decisive. “I firmly believe points will be dropped by all the teams involved,” Villas-Boas said. “It will be extremely difficult to win all four games because we have Chelsea away but that’s our ultimate objective. “We have 62 points and eight adrift from 70 which was the objective when we set out and it’s perfectly achievable with 12 points still to play for.”
