‘Christofias is to blame for crisis’ DIKO’s Papadopoulos charges that previous government took no responsibility for its lack of measures By Poly Pantelides

T

HE HEAD of parliament’s finance committee told an ongoing inquiry into the country’s near-financial collapse that former President Demetris Christofias was primarily to blame for the country’s botched bailout. “One of the biggest mistakes of the previous government was that it would not assume the political cost for taking measures,” Nicolas Papadopoulos told the Committee of Inquiry. Papadopoulos, chair of the House finance committee since 2011, accused the previous government of delays in taking austerity measures, partly because they were misled by the preceeding years of solid growth, he said. Despite warnings, Christofias did not allow his finance ministers to take any substantial action to contain spending, making it clear he was not politically willing to condone austerity measures, Papadopoulos said. “Christofias kept reacting against all efforts to implement (austerity) measures,” Papadopoulos said, adding that his government kept misjudging the situation, pushing through tax measures that squeezed the economy rather than helping things, he added. “Unfortunately my (July 2011) statement that (the Christofias government) would make a bigger mess than Greece and wreck the banking system was vindi-

cated.” He was referring to the terms of Cyprus’ €10 billion international bailout, leading to the island’s second biggest bank’s resolution and the restructuring of its biggest. With hindsight, when Cyprus became excluded from international markets in May 2011 it should have asked for an EU bailout, not for a Russian loan, Papadopoulos said referring to the €2.5 billion Cyprus got from the Russian Federation that year as a stopgap. But Papadopoulos conceded the house finance committee did not understand the consequences of a decision to write-down Greek government bonds in the summer of 2011, which eventually left Cyprus’ banks exposed to the tune of billions. He said that former central bank governor Athanasios Orphanides did become concerned when it later transpired – in February 2012 – that the Greek haircut would be bigger than originally thought. Orphanides informed the committee that he would try to speak to Christofias about the situation, with no success, Papadopoulos said. He nonetheless said that despite the banks’ overexposure to Greek debt, the political leadership dropped the ball, making mistakes on a national and European level. Following Cyprus’ exclusion from international markets, Cyprus’ downgrades from credit rating agencies

BRITAIN’S most successful mountaineer has become the first person to scale the three peaks of Mount Everest’s Western Cwm in one climb. Kenton Cool, 39, and his climbing partner Sherpa Dorje Gylgen returned to Everest base camp yesterday morning after reaching the summits of Nuptse, Everest and Lhotse in a single trip. Cool said after completing the unprecedented Three Peaks Challenge: “It has always been a dream of mine to attempt these three mountains. “It’s been a pretty full-on week. I’ve never been this tired. I’m totally 100 per cent spent, but it’s an absolutely fantastic feeling to have achieved this - a dream come true.” Cool, from Gloucestershire, and Dorje summitted Lhotse yesterday, but only considered the perilous climb to be over once they had reached base camp safely. At 7,861m (25,791ft), Nuptse is the world’s 20th highest peak, at 8,848m (29,029ft) Everest is the highest, and Lhotse is the fourth highest at 8,516m (27,940ft). The explorer left base camp last Thursday morning and arrived at the summit of Nuptse on Saturday, before reaching the peak of the world’s highest mountain on Sunday. His successful assault on Everest was the 11th time he had reached the top of the world. The achievement comes ahead of the 60th anniversary of the first conquest of Everest by Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay on May 29, 1953.

45 years ago, Wednesday May 22, 1968 Unemployment in Cyprus fell by 20 per cent last month, amounting to only about one per cent of the island’s workforce, an official announcement said yesterday. It said the reduction was due to an expansion of the Amiandos mine. The announcement reported that 2,605 people were registered as unemployed at the end of April, compared with 3,244 at the end of the previous month.

Ayia Napa sex museum ordered to close its doors A SEX museum in the centre of Ayia Napa has been ordered to close because it was never granted permission to operate in the first place. Owners have been given until Friday to take down the sign outside and remove all exhibits before a court date. “This gentleman has been sent a court order and must go to court on Friday to declare he has converted the museum back to its residential state,” Ayia Napa Mayor Yiannis Karousos said yesterday.

The mayor asked the museum owner to close the sex museum because he did not ask for or receive permission to operate, and because the content of the museum was not suitable for the city. “No one can open whatever they want, whenever they want without getting a permit from the correct authorities. The man who opened the sex museum did not even have the decency to ask for a permit, he just did what he wanted without any consideration. He also used a massive sign

to advertise his establishment, and he also needed a permit for that,” Karousos added. According to Karousos the museum owner rented a house that he converted into a museum without informing even the landlord of his intentions. “The landlord came to the municipality to complain and also signed a testimonial stating that his property was made into a sex museum without his approval. The tenant locked the doors, drew the curtains and did not reveal what he was doing until he

started distributing flyers all over Ayia Napa,” he said. The mayor said even if the owner of the museum had asked for a permit he would not have got one. The fact the museum was set-up approximately 50m away from a monastery did not seem to sit well with Karousos. He said most people consider Ayia Napa as the resort where only young people hang out but according to a Cyprus Tourism Organisation (CTO) survey three out of four people who visit are people who come with their fami-

lies and are over 35 years old. “This is not the image that we want to give of Ayia Napa. Children could just walk by the museum and see a sex doll,” Karousos said. Most of the walls of the sex museum are painted red. One is decorated with posters of some sexual nature. There is a plastic doll of a woman wearing red, sexy underwear in one corner next to an exhibition of adult movies. In one Cypriot traditional room there is a bed covered with a blood spotted white sheet.

All of the island’s bathing sites were deemed excellent

Pristine waters should be a boost for tourism industry By Stefanos Evripidou ALL 112 beaches tested in Cyprus for a recent European report have “excellent” water quality, putting the island at the top of the EU for bathing. Ninety-four per cent of bathing sites in the European Union meet minimum standards for water quality, with Cyprus and Luxembourg having the highest quality of bathing sites in the bloc, according to the European Environment Agency (EEA) annual report on bathing water quality in Europe. Cyprus, along with Luxembourg, scored full marks in the report, with all 112 coastal bathing sites deemed to have “excellent” water quality.

The EU average stands at 78 per cent, showing a two per cent increase compared to the previous year. Eight other countries have excellent quality values above the EU average: Malta (97 per cent), Croatia (95 per cent), Greece (93 per cent), Germany (88 per cent), Portugal (87 per cent), Italy (85 per cent), Finland (83 per cent) and Spain (83 per cent). Bathing water monitoring began in the EU following the Bathing Water Directive in 1990. Water samples are taken at the start and end of the bathing season for each bathing water site and tested for concentrations of two microbiological parameters- intestinal enterococci and Escherichia coli (also known as E. coli).

The national authorities also need to report each year on short-term pollution events, and events impacting bathing water quality. Environment Commissioner Janez Potočnik said: “It’s encouraging to see the quality of European bathing waters continuing to improve. But more remains to be done to ensure all our waters are suitable for bathing and drinking and that our aquatic ecosystems are in good health. Water is a precious resource and we need to put into practice all the necessary measures to protect it in full.” Jacqueline McGlade, EEA Executive Director, said: “From northern fjords to subtropical beaches, Europe is rich in places to cool

down in the summer. Today’s report demonstrates that bathing water quality is generally very good, but there were still some sites with pollution problems, so we urge people to check the rating of their favourite swimming place.” Every year, the European Environment Agency (EEA) compiles bathing water data gathered by local authorities at more than 22,000 sites across the 27 EU member states, Croatia and Switzerland, and measures levels of bacteria from sewage and livestock. More than two thirds of sites are coastal beaches, with rivers and lakes making up the remainder. Each annual report is based on data from the previous bathing season, so this year’s report is a

compilation of data gathered in summer 2012. In spite of the general improvement, this year’s report reveals that almost two per cent of bathing sites at beaches, lakes and rivers have poor water quality. The highest proportions of non-compliant bathing sites were in Belgium (12 per cent), the Netherlands (7 per cent) and the United Kingdom (6 per cent). Some of these beaches had to be closed during the 2012 season. In general, coastal bathing sites score highly, with more than 95 per cent of EU sites meeting the minimum requirements and 81 per cent rated as excellent. In comparison, 91 per cent of bathing waters in lakes and rivers score above the minimum threshold and

72 per cent have excellent quality. Storm water overflows, caused when sewers cannot cope with heavy rains, are still a problem in some areas, although better water treatment and fewer raw sewerage discharges into the environment have improved water quality. In the early 1990s, only around 60 per cent of sites had excellent quality water, while 70 per cent met minimum standards. Citizens can find out about the water quality at their favourite swimming spot by visiting the EEA’s Bathing Water website. The site allows users to download data and check interactive maps. People can also report the state of their local water using the ‘Eye on Earth’ website.

Ministry faces fine for forcing girl to sit through RE classes By Elias Hazou OMBUDSWOMAN Eliza Savvidou yesterday gave the Education Ministry a final deadline to comply with what she regards as discriminatory practices against students. In her capacity as head of the Anti-Discrimination Body, Savvidou has the power – but also intends – to impose sanctions on the ministry unless and until it does comply. The case draws on a complaint lodged by a high-school student attending a public school who opted out of religious education (RE) class. Whereas the girl was excused from taking the class and from being graded for it, she was nonetheless required to be present in the classroom during the lesson. The girl refused to stay in the classroom, and the school – acting on the ministry’s policy as defined in a relevant circular – penalised her by counting her non-attendance as unexcused absences. As a result, the ‘unexcused absences’ accumulated for the girl, who the Mail is told is an otherwise outstanding student. In defending its apparent inflexibility in refusing to excuse the girl from physical attendance, the ministry has cited practical reasons. It says schools lack either the facilities or the manpower to adequately supervise students who opt out of RE. But Savvidou is not convinced: “we’re talking about maybe a handful of students at the most at any given school… they could easily be assigned some non-graded work and be situated for one hour at the library or in an office,” she told the Cyprus Mail. Moreover, giving the ministry the benefit of the doubt,

Savvidou had requested data on the number of students who have asked to be exempt from RE. She never got the data. And Savvidou highlights the stark contradiction in the ministry’s policy: “On the one hand you allow pupils to be excluded from RE, yet on the other hand you force them to stay inside the classroom.” After studying the case, Savvidou concluded that forcible presence in classes teaching RE constitutes discrimination and impinges on a person’s freedom of religion. In her findings, published in the government gazette on April 26, Savvidou gave the ministry 20 days to rescind its circular and to halt the practice of counting non-attendance as unexcused absences. The recommendation also instructed schools to delete any unexcused absences accumulated in this way from students’ records. The publication of her recommendation in the gazette means that it is legally binding, and the Anti-Discrimination Body is entitled by law to enforce sanctions on the offending public body. Those sanctions would be in the form of a fine, to be imposed per day of continued non-compliance. Although the 20-day deadline has since expired, Savvidou is giving the ministry another chance to comply. Yesterday she wrote to the education ministry’s permanent secretary inviting her to meet on June 3 for an update on the situation. If at that time Savvidou deems that the ministry has still not fallen in line, she could plausibly order the fine. The girl in question decided to opt out as she is not Greek Orthodox, the religion taught in RE.

Christofias blamed for financial crisis ‘I don’t know of any other country that in five years can move from having a surplus to bankruptcy’ continued from page one were relentless, Papadopoulos said. The government continued spending even though its earnings were dropping and the economy stopped growing, he said. Despite being excluded from markets it waited for a year to ask for a bailout and then dragged negotiations on for months, Papadopoulos said, adding the delay was unprecedented on an EU level. Cyprus requested a bailout in June last year, reaching an interim agreement in November, but it was the current government that eventually agreed to a bailout this March, under much harsher terms. And though Laiki (Popular) bank – which Cyprus has been forced to wind down as part of the bailout – continued drawing emergency liquidity assistance, there was no legal obligation to let parliament know, Papadopoulos said. “Despite our repeated

Papadopoulos speaking before the Committee of Inquiry yesterday (Christos Theodorides) questions about Cyprus’ potential obligations in case Laiki went bankrupt, nothing was told to us,” Papadopoulos said, adding that the first time they were told Cyprus might be liable was in November last year when legislators rushed through an amend-

ing law allowing the state to guarantee bank bonds and new loans of an additional €3 billion, bringing the total amount to €6 billion. The Bank of Cyprus has been landed with Laiki’s emergency liquidity assistance that, at over €9 billion, is over half of the

country’s yearly economic output. “I don’t know of any other country that in five years can move from having a surplus to bankruptcy,” Papadopoulos said referring to the modest surplus the Christofias government inherited in 2008.

Cypriot work on satellite EU draft would not shield big deposits AT A complex in Kofinou work has begun on the design of the new HellasSat3 satellite to be launched into orbit in 2016. A group of around 10 Cypriot scientists are part of the team involved in the initial phase of the design – drawing up the satellite’s technical specifications. The experts are working out of Hellas Sat’s satellite control centre in Kofinou. Kofinou is also the location of the telemetry, tracking and control (TT&C) subsystem which, together with another tracking station in Greece, will be communicating with the satellite once it is launched into space. The two TT&Cs – effectively massive antennae – are currently tracking the HellasSat2 satellite launched from Cape Canaveral in May 2003. Once the new satellite - dubbed HS-3 - hurtles into space it too will be tracked by the two stations in Cyprus and Greece.

By Claire Davenport A DRAFT law that a group of European Union lawmakers voted for on Monday would shield small depositors from losing their savings in future bank rescues, but customers with more than €100,000 in savings when a bank failed could suffer losses. A group of lawmakers in the European Parliament’s economics committee overwhelmingly voted that, from 2016, large depositors in the EU might suffer losses if a bank gets into serious trouble. The plan was similar to the deal for Cyprus, which saw large de-

positors at Bank of Cyprus and Laiki taking hits. Under the EU proposal, a bank would dip into large deposits of over €100,000 once it had exhausted other avenues such as shareholders and bondholders. But deposits under €100,000 would be spared. “The case in Cyprus showed how important it is to have clear procedures for making shareholders, bondholders and ultimately depositors foot the bill,” a press release from the committee said after the vote. Some countries have also mooted the idea of using banks’ deposit guarantee schemes. But lawmakers voted

against this because it could hurt smaller savers. The European Parliament has joint say with the 27 countries in the EU on the law that would give regulators powers to impose losses on creditors and take other steps during a bank rescue. EU finance ministers agreed last week that large, uninsured depositors should be subject to losses but some countries may still seek some flexibility on how they wind down their banks. “The struggle will be how binding the bail-in and the hierarchy of liabilities is,” Sven Giegold, a German Green lawmaker said after the vote.

Sale of Greek branches ‘could cost BoC millions’ Sarris tells of ‘strange’ loans worth €4 billion By George Psyllides BANKERS yesterday criticised as unfair a deal to sell the Greek operations of the island’s banks as part of a €10 billion bailout deal Cyprus signed with international lenders. The operations of all three Cypriot banks – Bank of Cyprus (BoC), Laiki and Hellenic – went to Greece’s Piraeus Bank, which paid around €500 million. The deal went through despite opposition from the boards of BoC and Laiki, which was 84 per cent state owned. Former BoC chairman Andreas Artemis told the House Ethics Committee the deal had been seen through by the Central Bank (CBC) and the finance ministry without informing the lenders of the details, despite their pleas. “The sale was conducted under conditions we did not agree with at all,” Artemis said. “The board refused to sign off on the sale.” The deal, said the former BoC chairman, allowed Piraeus to demand compensation against certain loans it could deem problematic. Potential obligations that may arise in the future were not transferred on to Piraeus and could cost BoC millions, Artemis told MPs. On Monday, Piraeus reported a net profit of €3.62 billion compared with €46 million in the same period a year earlier. The figure included €3.41 billion goodwill write-back from the Cypriot takeover and a

Sarris said ‘strange’ loans totalled €4b

deferred tax asset of €540 million. The CBC has said it was enforcing political decisions. The deal had been finalised after the Eurogroup decision in March to resolve Laiki and recapitalise BoC by taking part of the uninsured – over €100,000 – deposits. Deposits in Greek branches were left untouched. The sale was designed to help Cyprus deleverage its vast banking sector, a key demand from the eurozone and the IMF. With their sale, the leverage ratio of Cyprus’ banking system (assets/GDP) would go down to around 6.8 from about 8 times. The move also helped to shield Cyprus from potential negative developments in

Greece and vice versa. That link, in particular the merger between Laiki and Marfin Egnatia, is widely believed to be one of the reasons for the downfall of the island’s economy. Michalis Sarris, who chaired Laiki between January and August 2012, told the committee of “strange” loans worth around €4.0 billion. Sarris said the term had to do with the collateral, the people and the interest rates of such loans but was stopped from expounding over concerns that it could hurt potential court procedures.

A Greek parliamentary enquiry however had called attention to “serious conflicts of interest” in Laiki’s Greek operation. It had loaned money to a community of Greek monks involved in land deals and to others who used the money to support a share sale by Marfin Investment Group, a company linked to Laiki through a shared chairman, Andreas Vgenopoulos, until November 2011. Vgenopoulos denied any wrongdoing. In a written statement issued yesterday, Vgenopoulos said he was ready to appear

before the committee and that all it would take was a phone call from the committee chairman to invite him. “In reality, I not only accept his invitation, but I demand it so that the Ethics Committee stops operating as a forum of unanswered slander and populist utterances,” he said. The former Laiki strongman charged that it was the members of the island’s political and economic establishment that destroyed Laiki and the economy and were now desperate to shake off their responsibility by misleading public opinion.

Commission’s new measures for crisis-hit countries THE European Commission has proposed measures to help crisis-hit countries to use much needed EU funds. The Commission has proposed to the Council of the EU and the European Parliament an increase of 95 per cent in the amount of co-financing programmes in the cohesion policy for Cyprus, Greece and Portugal. The total amount reaches €520 million euro, €20m for Cyprus, €400m for Greece and €100m for Portugal. According to the Commission, the measures would help these member states tackle youth unemployment, support small and medium sized business and pay for key infrastructure projects. In the absence of these proposed measures, Cohesion Policy investments for growth could be lost because of a lack of time to spend the money or because of the difficulty of finding national and private co-finance in the current economic climate. The proposal, prompted by requests from EU governments and from the European Council, will now be sent to the European Parliament and the EU’s Council of Ministers for adoption. The first measure would help to deliver around €500m growth promoting investments more quickly to Greece, Cyprus and Portugal. This would increase the EU contribution of Cohesion Policy investments and allow a lower national share. This would prolong an agreement on co-financing from December 2011 for another two years. It would also ease the strain on national budgets but involves no new money from the EU.

State fund to employ people in tourism undersubscribed DESPITE President Nicos Anastasiades’ announcement last month, during his speech on kick-starting the economy, that €21m will be given towards helping the tourism industry to employ 6,000 people, the government has only received 1,000 applications. According to the head of the Cyprus Hotels Association (PASYXE), Haris Loizides, if the government’s project had been announced in January or February more interest would have been shown. “Hotels have already made arrangements to employ people although many hotels continue to hire unemployed Cypriots, just not through the programme,” Loizides said. He explained that to receive 30 per cent of the wages they would pay to hire unemployed Cypriots they would need to keep them in employment for at least seven months. “The

holiday season lasts until November, so hotels only really require personnel for the next four or five months,” he added. Loizides insisted that hoteliers are very eager to hire unemployed Cypriots. “According to current stats for April, tourism is down by 14 per cent compared to last year, a fact which troubles us so we are obviously operating less than in previous years,” he concluded. During his speech the President also revealed a programme will be set up to help train more than 1,000 degreeholders to find employment in both the private and public sectors with a monthly wage of €500 for all participants. According to Andreas Christou, a senior official at the Education Ministry, this programme has received 2,000 applications so far for 1,000 available positions.

ter said the modern method of hydrometallurgy is being applied for the first time in Europe, producing pure copper metal in the form of cathode copper, which meets the highest standards. “The application of hydrometallurgy is environmentally friendly and has a low cost,” he said.

The aim of the park, according to Kouyialis, is the continuous extraction of minerals throughout the course of the day. “I believe that this large investment will reach its full potential, both economically and technologically,” he said.

Infighting reaches peak as DIKO elections loom Papadopoulos: we need to win dissatisfied over, not chase them out By Stefanos Evripidou WITH ELECTIONS for the DIKO party leadership earmarked for this November, the two main contenders yesterday locked horns over the question of party expulsions. DIKO leader Marios Garoyian questioned the point of defining people as party members if they act either in an official capacity or unofficially in the interests of other movements or parties. DIKO MP Nicolas Papadopoulos, who opposed the party decision to support President Nicos Anastasiades in February’s election campaign, argued that now was not the time to chase people away from the troubled party but to work towards unity. The coalition partner’s executive office met on Monday night where they decided to

propose a congress on the party’s charter and policies at the end of September or early October, and an electoral assembly to decide the party leadership at the end of November. According to reports, during the meeting Garoyian had some harsh words for Papadopoulos, questioning his actions in the run-up and aftermath of the presidential elections. During the elections, Papadopoulos’ support for the candidacy of Giorgos Lillikas had become the worst kept secret in Cypriot politics. DIKO spokesman Angelos Votsis said yesterday Garoyian’s criticism of those who “undermine unity and cohesion and reduce (the party’s) political credibility” was meant as a call for everyone to avoid personal conflicts that risk splitting the

party. Speaking to the state broadcaster CyBC yesterday, Garoyian questioned how the party is supposed to deal with those who choose to participate in other political movements or parties. “How will this be dealt with? Can someone be a member of two, three parties? This is unheard of. It’s a question of respect for the party.” In a clear dig at Papadopoulos’ refusal to tow the party line during the elections, the DIKO leader proceeded to ask a series of rhetorical questions: “What is a party at the end of the day? Why are decisions taken? Shall we not take any decisions so everyone will be satisfied? Party leaders are those who dare to go against the current, if it’s in the greater good.” Regarding criticism of the notion of expelling certain wayward members ahead of the November leadership elections, Garoyian noted that from the 22,000 registered party members there are a number who have been elected to participate in local

authorities but as representatives of other parties. DIKO’s doors remain open to those who wish to help the party, he said. “There are many who comply with decisions and those who only choose (to comply with) decisions which suit them... should we all have double standards? These people need to decide what kind of a party they want,” said Garoyian. Quite unsurprisingly, Papadopoulos argued against the idea of expelling people from the party. “First, I disagree with expulsions as a matter of principle and procedure. After this difficult period and decisions that DIKO had to take, we don’t have the luxury of expelling officials or voters from the party,” he said. “Now is the time for unity and my candidacy for the DIKO party leadership aims to achieve that, to unite the party and move forward.” The DIKO MP argued against removing the right to vote from any friend, supporter or member of the

party, adding, “certainly there are those who are dissatisfied, my view is we need to win them over, not chase them out”. Papadopoulos is clearly hoping to harness dissatisfaction within DIKO towards Garoyian’s leadership which has taken the party from an alliance with AKEL’s Demetris Christofias to one with DISY’s Anastasiades. Garoyian, on the other hand, appears to attract the support of those more loyal to the legacy of former president Spyros Kyprianou. The incumbent DIKO leader would likely prefer to purge the party of members who openly supported and fought for Lillikas in the February elections, in clear defiance of the party leadership, before November’s electoral congress. DIKO’s central committee will meet this Saturday to approve the election dates and evaluate the presidential election results as well as the “anti-party behaviour” shown by party members before and after the elections.

scribed the transaction as landmark. “In line with our strategic objectives for 2013, we are pleased to execute this landmark transaction, which has enormous benefits not only for Dolphin but also for the Cypriot economy in general,” he said. Kambourides added that “in a period of very challenging market and operational conditions in Cyprus due to the current banking crisis, the sale of Venus Rock for a significant cash consideration demonstrates the quality of Dolphin’s real estate portfolio and proves the resilience of the Cyprus property market”.

AN 86-year-old woman died in tragic circumstances yesterday morning apparently while trying to clean the sewerage system of her Limassol home. Reports said the woman appeared to have lost consciousness and fell head first into 40 centimetres of water where she was found by her son who went for a visit. The woman was rushed to hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival. Police have ruled out foul play as a metal rod she held showed she had been trying to unblock a sewage cistern when she fell. The exact cause of death will be determined by a post mortem scheduled for today.

Police plan A PLAN to improve the image of police in Paphos and increase the level of service offered was presented to officers yesterday. Head of the Paphos police, Nicos Sofokleous, said on the first Monday of the month his door will be open to the public from 12 noon until 2.30pm. During this time members of the public can present any complaints. Paphos police spokesman, Nicos Tsapis, also announced that on the first Wednesday of every month police members can visit the police headquarters to make recommendations for improving the police service and image. The assistant director of administration, Nicos Pentaras, presented the government’s agenda concerning the police department so that all officers became aware of the latest set of objectives.

Road fatality A 34-year-old man from Alamino died in a road accident yesterday in the Larnaca district. According to police, Loizos Constantinou was driving towards Kiti from Mazotos when under circumstances still being investigated he ended up in the wrong lane. He crashed into a car being driven by a 60-yearold and had to be freed from the wreckage by members of the fire service. Both men were taken to Larnaca General Hospital where Constantinou was pronounced dead on arrival while the older man suffered minor injuries but was kept for observation.

Cypriot success on Britain’s Got Talent

Aliki on the show

A MURDER suspect had to be escorted from a courtroom through the judges’ chambers yesterday to avoid an attack from relatives of the man he shot dead in the village of Kofinou in March over a property dispute. Prodromos Hadjipanayis, 33, is accused of killing 54-yearold Panicos Stavrou and injuring his son Giorgos Georgiou as well as three other people during a shooting rampage on March 23. The suspect was due to be formally charged yesterday but his defence asked for more time to examine additional evidence asked from the state. The court agreed and adjourned for June 26. Hadjipanayis is expected to be charged with premeditated murder and manslaughter. The end of the hearing yesterday saw an outburst from Stavrou’s grief-stricken relatives who tried to attack the suspect. Stavrou’s widow fainted as other relatives were prevented from approaching him by police officers who rushed the suspect out of the courtroom through the

Aliki Christoforou through to next round after impressing with tale of beating disease By Poly Pantelides STANDING in front of an audience and a panel of judges for UK show Britain’s Got Talent, Aliki Chrysochou said that there was a time her mum needed to do everything for her because she could not speak, read, write or walk. The Limassol-born Cypriot was diagnosed with encephalitis ten years ago, a serious condition causing inflammation of the brain. A video clip quickly doing the rounds on social media sites was just the tearjerker talent shows are known for, presenting the story of the recovery of a stunning and dignified Aliki. The 29-year-old soprano and music teacher came on stage all smiles, hands held fast in front of her, and was asked to elaborate on how she had learned “to fight through difficult circumstances” during an audition for Britain’s Got Talent last Saturday. Speaking of the difficult months following her diagnosis, a teary Aliki said, “I couldn’t speak, read, write

(or) walk. My mum would do everything for me she would feed me bathe me.” Her mum said that Aliki, then only 19, had just finished her first year of university and was back home when her speech started to slur and she started getting confused over simple tasks. “It was a very frightening time, she couldn’t walk, she couldn’t feed herself – it was really like everything that she’d known was ripped away.” A turning point in Aliki’s recovery was her humming her favourite tunes from her childhood. “All of a sudden you just heard this wonderful clear humming from Aliki and she could just remember all the tunes, which was absolutely amazing,” Aliki’s mum said, her voice breaking. “Music has been such a big part of her and the fact that she could respond to music when she was so very very poorly, I think that’s made it an extra special part of her life.” Aliki’s choice of song then, Evanescence’s ‘Bring me to Life’ was all the more poignant for its lyrics: Wake me

up inside, call my name and save me from the dark.” “I can’t imagine what your mum must be thinking because that’s practically an anthem for her,” said judge Amanda Holden. Treated to a standing ovation and much praise from all the judges, even the notoriously grumpy Simon Cowell said she was a “natural talent” before she made it through to the next round. “I’ve been singing ever since I was a little baby. This has been my dream. I just can’t believe I’m here today,” Aliki said on Saturday.

Paphos-based micro brewery set to launch first real ales By Bejay Browne A NEW family-owned micro-brewery based in Paphos will launch a selection of beers this weekend at the Kamares festival in Tala. The family was granted permission to brew by the government only recently having fought red tape and bureaucracy for almost three years. A selection of beer will be ready for tasting at the festival, and for free too. “Four of our cask condition beers will definitely be ready for people to taste, a fifth is in the tank and it may also be ready by then. We will have more available soon as we have over 10,000 litres of beer in the tanks, in five different styles,” said master brewer Chris Richards. Aphrodite’s Rock Brewing Company is Cypriot

registered and will operate out of a premises in Tsada in Paphos. The company describes itself as a small-batch craft brewery and employs a small team of highly qualified and experienced brewing specialists from around the world who work together with the brewery’s local staff.

HOME DELIVERY Set in an old stone building nestled in the hills, the beers are brewed using state-of-the art brewing technology. “People will be able to pre-order the beers from us at the festival, both bottled and in flexicasts,” Richards said. The brewery will also provide home deliveries and self collection from the brewery. The Kamares Festival is being organised by

judges’ chambers. Tensions run high outside the building where relatives verbally assaulted the suspect’s father who was removed from the area. “It is my father he killed,” the victim’s daughter shouted at the man. Stavrou’s relatives wore black T-shirts on which they had printed the date of the killing and the phrase “you are our hero, who will live in our hearts for ever”. Father and son Stavrou and Georgiou were working on a Turkish-Cypriot house at the time, which seems to have been at the centre of the dispute. The 33-year-old suspect had been lobbying the Guardian of Turkish Cypriot Properties at the Interior Ministry to allocate the house to him but it was given to Giorgos Georgiou instead. The suspect subsequently went to the local market where he allegedly shot and injured the owners, brothers Adamos and Panayiotis Lambrou – with whom he also had property disputes - and 37-year-old Katy Charalambous.

EUROPE TODAY Points ‘theft’ RUSSIA is investigating an alleged vote theft at the Eurovision Song Contest. Foreign minister Sergey Lavrov met his counterpart from Azerbaijan, a former Soviet republic which is probing why its announced votes did not give any points to Russia. Azerbaijan’s foreign minister, Elmar Mammadyarov, said the country’s mobile phone operators reported Russia’s Dina Garipova came second in the local vote, which would have given her 10 points. But when the announcement was made on live TV, there were no points for Russia. Lavrov called it an “outrageous incident” and said the points were stolen from Garipova. Garipova finished fifth overall on Saturday, 17 points behind fourthplaced Norway. In Eurovision, votes compiled by national phone operators go to a television broadcaster in each country, which presents the tally via a live video link with the country hosting the competition. Azerbaijani television earlier lamented the “loss of the votes” but could not explain what actually happened. Mammadyarov said officials are investigating the incident and are seeking access to the results of the vote. It was unclear where any mistake or vote manipulation might have occurred.

Cathedral suicide POLICE evacuated Paris’ Notre Dame cathedral yesterday after a wellknown far-right former activist committed suicide by shooting himself in the mouth in front of its main altar, a police source said. Dominique Venner, 78, was a historian known in France for his far-right political essays. He carried a letter on his person but made no declaration before shooting himself dead in the mid-afternoon, the source said.

Speculation over pope carrying out exorcism RELIGIOUS observers are asking: “Is Pope Francis an exorcist?” after an incident in St Peter’s Square. The pope laid his hands on the head of a young man after celebrating Mass. The man heaved deeply a half-dozen times, convulsed and shook, and then slumped in his wheelchair as Francis prayed over him. The television station of the Italian bishops’ conference said it had surveyed exorcists, who agreed that Francis either performed an exorcism or a prayer to free the man from the devil. The Vatican was more cautious, saying Francis “didn’t intend to perform any exorcism. But as he often does for the sick or suffering, he simply intended to pray for someone.” Fuelling the speculation is Francis’ obsession with the

Pontiff ’s prayer over young man causes him convulsions devil, a frequent subject of his homilies. There has been an apparent surge in demand for exorcisms among the faithful despite the irreverent treatment the rite often receives from Hollywood. Who can forget the green vomit and the spinning head of the possessed girl in the 1973 cult classic The Exorcist? In his very first homily as pope on March 14, Francis warned cardinals gathered in the Sistine Chapel the day after he was elected that “he who doesn’t pray to the Lord prays to the devil”. He has since mentioned the devil on a handful of occasions,

most recently in a May 4 homily when in his morning Mass in the Vatican hotel chapel he spoke of the need for dialogue - except with Satan. “With the prince of this world you can’t have dialogue: let this be clear!” he warned. Experts said Francis’ frequent invocation of the devil is a reflection both of his Jesuit spirituality, his Latin American roots - and a reflection of a Catholic Church weakened by secularisation. “The devil’s influence and presence in the world seems to fluctuate in quantity inversely proportionate to the presence of Christian faith,” said the Rev. Robert Gahl, a

theologian at Rome’s Pontifical Holy Cross University. “So, one would expect an upswing in his malicious activity in the wake of de-Christianisation and secularisation” in the world and a surge in things like drug use, pornography and superstition. In recent years, Rome’s pontifical universities have hosted several courses for would-be exorcists on the rite, updated in 1998 and contained in a little red leather-bound booklet. The rite is relatively brief, consisting of blessings with holy water, prayers and an interrogation of the devil in which the exorcist demands to know the devil’s name and when it will leave the possessed person. Only a priest authorised by a bishop can perform an exorcism, and canon law specifies that the exorcist must be “endowed with piety, knowledge, prudence and integrity”.

A MONKEY which belonged to popstar Justin Bieber has become German national property after the singer failed to provide authorities with the documents needed to reclaim the pet seized by customs officials. Bieber had until Friday to hand in the necessary paperwork which included health and species protection certificates after ‘Mally’ his capuchin monkey was confiscated at Munich airport in March while the singer was on tour. But Judith Brettmeister, spokeswoman for the shelter which has cared for Mally since then, said the 19-year-old Canadian singer had not been in touch or handed over any documents and would no longer be able to reclaim the animal. “The monkey belongs to Germany now,” she said, adding that Germany’s Federal Office for Nature Conservation would now take the monkey away and place it in a group of monkeys, though she did not know where that would be. “We hope that it will be as soon as possible because the monkey needs to be integrated soon - it is becoming really strange because it only knows people so it has not learned any proper social behaviour,” Brettmeister said, adding that the monkey was doing well otherwise.

The 19-year-old singer has not made arrangements to claim the capuchin monkey

Inflation drop is bigger than originally foreseen Falling pump prices lead to unexpected April inflation dip By John Collingridge

Wayne Rooney told of his delight yesterday after wife Coleen gave birth to a boy but immediately caused confusion over his choice of name. The England striker broke the news to his six million followers on Twitter and revealed they had called their second son ‘Klay’. One baby names website claimed it means “he who

is immortal” and there was also speculation that boxing fan Rooney had named him after Cassius Clay, who later became Muhammad Ali. Rooney’s first son is called Kai, now aged three. Shortly before 4am, Rooney, 27, tweeted: “Our Beautiful Son Klay Anthony Rooney was born at 2.11am, Weighing 7Ib 11.1/2 oz... We’re all delighted!!”

FALLING prices at the petrol pumps led to a biggerthan-expected drop in inflation in April, the first easing in the annual rate of price rises for six months. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said consumer prices index (CPI) inflation dipped to 2.4 per cent in April, from 2.8 per cent in March, as lower fuel costs and air fares pushed overall transport prices down for the first time in almost four years. But the temporary dip in inflation triggered by weaker commodity prices will do little to ease the financial pain on households, with inflation expected to spike above 3 per cent in the summer. The pace of the fall surprised economists, who had expected CPI inflation to edge down to about 2.7 per cent in April. Howard Archer, economist at IHS Global Insight, said: “April’s marked drop in inflation to a seven-month low of 2.4 per cent is very

Four-hour target drop MANY hospital emergency departments have dropped the Government’s four-hour target to deal with patients because of soaring demand, MPs have heard. Some hospitals are instead assessing how many patients are admitted or discharged by doctors within 12 hours of them attending emergency departments. In the last year, the number of A&E patients who waited between four and 12 hours increased by 34,000, the Health Select Committee heard. The target challenges all hospitals in England to admit or discharge 95 per cent of patients within four hours of them attending A&E. Dr Mike Clancy, president of the College of Emergency Medicine, said: “The deterioration in four-hour performance, which is a process measure and not a quality measure, has reflected the pressure the system is under. “What has happened is that organisations are now focusing more on how many people waiting up to 12 hours, and have in a sense parked the four-hour target because it is so difficult to manage. “That

is a reflection of the pressure the system is under.” Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt briefed fellow ministers on A&E performance at yesterday morning’s regular weekly meeting of Cabinet at 10 Downing Street. Following the meeting, Prime Minister David Cameron’s official spokesman told reporters: “The most recent statistics (show that) over the last three weeks, A&E performance has actually exceeded the 95 per cent standards for people admitted or discharged within four hours. Last week, experts warned that emergency care systems could collapse in six months as a result of rising demand. Dr Clancy told MPs: “There is a major workforce workload imbalance and an inability of the whole system to meet the demand. “What is happening in emergency departments reflects the performance and difficulties of the whole NHS as well as within the emergency department.” He said in the last decade there had been a 17 per cent increase in patients attending major A&E units.

G4S chief to step down after string of setbacks BRITISH outsourcing group G4S said its chief executive Nick Buckles would step down after a string of high-profile setbacks and a profit warning that damaged investor confidence. Buckles, who oversaw a staffing fiasco at the London Olympics last year as well as a failed £5-billion takeover of Danish cleaning firm ISS during his eight-year tenure, will step down at the end of May. Ashley Almanza, who joined the firm as Chief Financial Officer in March from oil and gas firm BG Group, will take over.

Under Buckles’ guidance the company’s share price has soared as the world’s biggest security firm expanded into some 125 countries. But his tenure is likely to be remembered for incidents that have blighted the group in the past 18 months. Buckles’ decision in late 2011 to launch a surprise £5.2-billion takeover of ISS hit investor confidence severely. It was eventually abandoned. Last year, G4S failed to provide sufficient security guard numbers for the London Olympics, prompting the army to step in.

The ONS said CPI inflation dipped to 2.4% in April as lower fuel costs and air fares pushed down transport prices welcome news, providing significant relief for both consumers and the Bank of England.” But Alan Clarke at Scotiabank said while it was a “big downward surprise”, much of the fall is likely to be temporary. The Treasury said it was “good news for families and businesses”, adding the economy is “healing”. Plunging global commodity markets have hit the price of Brent crude oil in

recent weeks, driving petrol and diesel costs lower. Petrol prices fell by 2.1p over the month to 136.4p a litre compared with a 3.2p rise a year earlier. Diesel was 3.9p lower to 141.7p per litre, compared with a 2.1p rise a year ago. Air fares fell by 6.4 per cent on a month earlier, compared with a rise of 7.4 per cent a year earlier. The only notable upward effect came from food and non-alcoholic drinks. Prices

rose by 0.7 per cent on the month, compared with a 0.1 per cent fall a year earlier, as farmers pushed through price rises after the freezing winter ruined crops. CPI inflation fell for the first time since last autumn, but is expected to provide only a temporary respite for households as rising gas, water and electricity bills feed through to households over the summer. At 2.4 per cent, it far outstrips wage rises which grew at just 0.4 per cent in the first quarter versus a year earlier. Inflation has remained stubbornly above the Bank of England’s 2 per cent target since December 2009. The Bank of England recently downgraded its inflation forecasts, predicting CPI inflation will peak at about 3.1 per cent in the summer, instead of its previous forecasts of about 3.5 per cent. Economists said weakerthan-expected inflation will give the Bank more scope to resume economic stimulus through quantitative easing.

Syria ‘destroys Israeli vehicle on its territory’

WORLD TODAY Jordan keeps refugees away JORDAN has turned away thousands of Syrian refugees in the past week in the first such clampdown since the crisis in Syria began more than two years ago, diplomats, activists and aid workers said yesterday. Jordan, due to host an international conference on Syria today, has already taken in 473,587 Syrians out of a total of 1.5 million who have fled the conflict in an exodus that has accelerated in the past four months, UN figures show. All four unofficial crossing points used by refugees trying to escape bombardments in the southern province of Deraa have been closed for the past six days, refugees and aid workers say, although the official frontier post at Jaber remained open. They said Syrian families trying to pass into Jordan from the rebel-held border villages of Nasib and Tel Shehab had been turned away with no reason given by the Jordanians.

Israel says the vehicle was only damaged and adds that its troops had returned fire By Dominic Evans SYRIA said its troops destroyed an Israeli vehicle that crossed into its territory from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights yesterday and warned that any attempt to violate its sovereignty would meet “immediate and firm retaliation”. Israel said the incident took place on its side of the Golan ceasefire line and the vehicle was damaged but not destroyed, and none of its soldiers was hurt. It said its troops returned fire. The clash highlighted the potential for renewed conflict along a frontline that has become increasingly fraught after nearly four decades of calm overseen by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his father. It also came two weeks after Israel launched airstrikes near Damascus against suspected missile stocks after which Syria threatened to retaliate. Assad is battling a twoyear-old uprising in which rebel forces, including radi-

cal Islamists, have taken swathes of rural territory and attacked army posts near the Golan frontier. There are frequent reports of cross-border gunfire from Syria during clashes between army and rebel forces, but yesterday’s incident was the first time since the start of the crisis that Syria’s armed forces said they targeted Israel’s military. “Our noble armed forces destroyed an Israeli vehicle ... which entered from the occupied territories and crossed the ceasefire line,” Syria’s military leadership said in a statement broadcast on state media said. The incident occurred at 1.15 am (2215 GMT, Monday), it said. Shortly afterwards, Israeli forces fired two rockets towards a Syrian position, without causing any casualties, it said. Israel said its vehicle had been on the Israeli side of the frontier. Defence Minister Moshe Yaalon said that in response to the Syrian fire, Israeli forces hit a Syr-

ian army target. “Our policy on Syria is clear: We are not intervening there, of course, in the civil war,” he told reporters. “But as for the situation in the Golan Heights, we are not allowing and we will not permit a spillover of fire into our territory. Overnight, a Syrian army target was destroyed after such gunfire spilled into our territory in the Golan Heights.” Tension in the Golan Heights region has been fuelled by the fighting on the Syrian side and several recent abductions by rebel fighters of UN peacekeepers, who have monitored a narrow zone of separation between Syrian and Israeli troops since 1974. The abductions have led the Philippines government to say it is considering withdrawing its troops from the UNDOF observer mission. Austria, the other main troop contributor, is concerned that French and British calls to drop an EU arms embargo on Syrian rebels would render its continued presence untenable.

US Secretary of State John Kerry steps off his plane as he arrives in Muscat yesterday. Kerry’s visit is the first stop on a week-long trip that will take him to Amman for talks on bringing Syria’s warring parties to a peace conference and to Jerusalem and Ramallah to discuss reviving Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations

New internet curbs before polls

Iranian offficials are wary of the possibility of unrest after the disputed re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad four years ago

IRANIANS are struggling with slower internet speeds and limited access ahead of an unpredictable presidential election that has put hardline Islamist authorities on alert for possible unrest. Experts and web users say they believe the internet obstacles are related to the June 14 presidential vote, the first since 2009 polls in which accusations of fraud - denied by the government - kindled months of protests organised in part via social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. Iranian officials denied any connection between the internet disruptions and the upcoming vote. But, after the disputed reelection of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad four years ago, they are wary of the possibility of further unrest this time around. The last-minute entries of moderate former president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani and Ahmadinejad ally Esfandiar Rahim Mashaie have shaken up what was expected to be a limited race between hardline conservatives close to clerical Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and hostile to Ahmadinejad. The populist Ahmadinejad, who has fallen out with Khamenei, is limited by law to two consecutive presidential terms. Iran’s Guardian Council was due to present a final list of approved candidates

to the Interior Ministry yesterday. The ministry then has two days to announce the approved names. The opposition website Kaleme reported on Monday that security had been heightened in Tehran, apparently to counter any protests should the candidacies of Rafsanjani or Mashaie be rejected by the council. Iranian web users, who number some 45 million according to official figures, have grappled with increased obstacles to using the internet since the 2009 election. Kaleme said on Monday Internet speeds had dropped in much of Tehran and that in some parts of the capital, accessing the web had become impossible - which would prevent dissidents from mustering protests online as they did after the 2009 vote. Hamed, 33, a dissident freelance journalist living in Tehran, said his clients now have resorted to sending him files by loading them onto CDs and transporting them by courier. “We get things done but with more time spent,” Hamed told Reuters via email. Many Iranians used Virtual Private Network (VPN) software to bypass the government’s extensive web filter. But the government blocked access to most VPNs, which make computers look as if they are located in another country, in March.

Peace debate exposes deep rifts in Israeli government ISRAEL’S coalition government presented a divided front on Palestinian statehood yesterday as US Secretary of State John Kerry prepared a new mission to revive long-defunct peace talks. Appearing before a parliamentary committee, Israeli chief peace negotiator Tzipi Livni outlined a vision she said she shared with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of an end

to the decades-old conflict with the Palestinians. “My policy and that of the prime minister is that a solution of two states for two peoples must be achieved,” said Livni, who heads a small centrist party in the governing coalition. Far-right members of the government were having none of it, in a rare public clash of ideologies between political allies in Netanyahu’s

administration since it took office in March. “Two states for two peoples might be Netanyahu’s position, but it is not the official government position. It is not part of its basic guidelines,” Orit Struck of the Bayit Yehudi party said at the Foreign Affairs and Defence committee session. The party’s leader, Naftali Bennett, repeatedly voiced his opposition

to the establishment of a Palestinian state in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip, saying it would ultimately be ruled by Muslim militants intent on destroying Israel. Instead, the former Jewish settlement leader said, Israel should annex much of the West Bank, which it captured in the 1967 Middle East war along with East Jerusalem and Gaza.

Further Iran spy case arrests SAUDI Arabia has detained 10 people accused of spying for its Shi’ite Muslim regional rival Iran after arresting 18 people in the same case in March, state media reported yesterday. The Sunni Muslim kingdom, the world’s top oil exporter, accuses the Islamic Republic of stirring unrest among minority Saudi Shi’ites. Tehran rejects that charge and has also denied any involvement in espionage in Saudi Arabia. “Initial investigation carried out by the authorities led to the detention of 10 others for involvement in spying activities,” Saudi Press Agency quoted Interior Ministry security spokesman Major-General Mansour al-Turki as saying.

Strikers hurt TEN striking South African miners were taken to hospital yesterday after being hit by rubber bullets, police said, as labour strife spread ahead of mid-year pay negotiations. As well as the violence at a chromium mine, the National Union of Metal Workers of South Africa (NUMSA) said it wanted a 20 per cent industrywide salary rise after a two-day stoppage at a Mercedes-Benz plant in East London. “If our demands are not met we will have no option but to go to the streets,” union treasurer Mphumzi Maqungo told Reuters.

top Dozens killed by huge Guatemala’s court annuls Rios tornado in Oklahoma Montt conviction Death toll revised from 51 to at least 24 victims By Carey Gillam and Ian Simpson EMERGENCY workers pulled more than 100 survivors from the rubble of homes, schools and a hospital in an Oklahoma town hit by a powerful tornado, and officials yesterday sharply lowered the number of deaths caused by the storm. The 2-mile (3-km) wide tornado tore through Moore outside Oklahoma City on Monday afternoon, trapping victims beneath the rubble. Seven children died at Plaza Towers Elementary School, which took a direct hit, but many more survived unhurt. “They literally were lifting walls up and kids were coming out,” Oklahoma State Police Sergeant Jeremy Lewis said. “They pulled kids out from under cinder blocks without a scratch on them.” The Oklahoma state medical examiner’s office said 24 bodies had been recovered from the wreckage, down from the 51 they had reported earlier. The earlier number likely reflected some double-counted deaths, said Amy Elliott, chief administrative officer for the medical examiner. “There was a lot of chaos,” she said. Thunderstorms and lightning slowed the rescue effort yesterday, but 101 people had been pulled from the debris alive, Oklahoma Highway Patrol spokeswoman Betsy Randolph said. Firefighters from more than a dozen fire departments and rescuers from other states worked all night under bright spotlights trying to find survivors. President Barack Obama declared a major disaster area in Oklahoma, ordering federal aid to supplement state and local efforts in Moore after the deadliest US tornado since 161 people were killed in Joplin, Missouri, two years ago. “The people of Moore should know that their country will remain on the ground, there for them, beside them, as long as it takes,” Obama said at

Glenn Lewis, the mayor of Moore, said the whole town looked like a debris field and there was a danger of electrocution and fire from downed power lines and broken natural gas lines. “It looks like we have lost our hospital. I drove by there a while ago and it’s pretty much destroyed,” Lewis told NBC. The National Weather Service assigned the twister a preliminary ranking of EF4 on the Enhanced Fujita Scale - the second most powerful category of tornado with winds up to 200 mph (320 kph).

WEATHER WARNING The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Centre warned the town 16 minutes before the tornado touched down at 3:01 pm (2001 GMT), which is more than the average eight to 10 minutes of warning, said Keli Pirtle, a spokeswoman for the centre in Norman, Oklahoma. US Representative Tom Cole, who lives in Moore, said the Plaza Towers school was the most secure and structurally strong building in the area. “And so people did the right thing, but if you’re in front of an F4 or an F5 there is no good thing to do if you’re above ground. It’s just tragic,” he said on MSNBC TV. At least 60 of the 240 people injured were children, hospital officials said. Witnesses said Monday’s

THIS WEEK IN YOUR

tornado appeared more fierce than the giant twister that was among the dozens that tore up the area on May 3, 1999, killing more than 40 people and destroying thousands of homes. That tornado ranked as an EF5 tornado with wind speeds of more than 200 mph. The 1999 tornado ranks as the third-costliest tornado in US history, having caused more than $1 billion in damage at the time, or more than $1.3 billion in today’s dollars. Only the devastating Joplin and Tuscaloosa tornadoes in 2011 were more costly. Monday’s tornado in Moore ranks among the most severe in the United States. Jeff Alger, 34, who works in the Kansas oil fields on a fracking crew, said his wife Sophia took their children out of school when she heard a tornado was coming and then fled Moore and watched it flatten the town from a few miles away. “They didn’t even have time to grab their shoes,” said Alger, who has five children aged four to 11. The storm tore part of the roof off his home. He was with his wife at Norman Regional Hospital to have glass and other debris removed from his wife’s feet. Moore was devastated with debris everywhere, street signs gone, lights out, houses destroyed and vehicles tossed about as if they were toys. The dangerous storm system threatened several southern Plains states with more twisters.

Former dictator Rios Montt has repeatedly denied the charges against him country is. The powerful people do what they want and we poor and indigenous are devalued. We don’t get justice. Justice means nothing for us.” At the time the row broke out between the judges, a number of appeals were lodged with the Constitutional Court over alleged irregularities in the handling of the case. One related to Francisco Garcia, one of Rios Montt’s defence lawyers, who had just won an appeal to be readmitted to the case. Garcia was thrown out when the trial began for repeatedly trying to have two of the three presiding judges recused. When Garcia was reinstated, he tried to recuse the judges again, but they rejected his bid and proceeded with the case. The Constitutional Court said the judges should have suspended the trial until the recusal attempt had been officially resolved. A spokesman for the court could not say how the recusal bid needed to be formally settled. Rios Montt came to power in a bloodless coup on March 23, 1982, and ruled for 17 months during one of the most brutal phases of the conflict until he was toppled in August 1983.

GUATEMALA’S highest court on Monday overturned a genocide conviction against former dictator Efrain Rios Montt and reset his trial back to when a dispute broke out a month ago over who should hear the case. Rios Montt, 86, was found guilty on May 10 of overseeing the killings by the armed forces of at least 1,771 members of the Maya Ixil population during his 1982-83 rule. He was sentenced to 80 years in prison. However, in a ruling on Monday, the country’s Constitutional Court ordered that all the proceedings be voided going back to April 19, when one of the presiding judges suspended the trial because of a dispute with another judge over who should hear it. It was unclear when the trial might restart. Rios Montt’s conviction was hailed as a landmark for justice in the Central American nation, where as many as 250,000 people were killed in a bloody civil war lasting from 1960 to 1996. When Rios Montt was in power, his government launched a fierce offensive in which soldiers raped, tortured and killed tens of thousands of Maya villagers suspected of helping Marxist rebels. Thousands more were forced into exile or had to join paramilitary forces fighting the insurgents. After he was sentenced, a court ordered the government to apologise for atrocities committed against indigenous people. Ana Caba, an ethnic Ixil who survived the civil war after fleeing her home, was stunned by the Constitutional Court’s decision. “I’m distressed,” she told Reuters. “I don’t know what’s happening. Last year Videla told an Argentine journalist that the crackdown he oversaw was the price that Argentina had to pay in order to remain a republic. “War, by nature, is cruel,” Videla said. “An internal war, between brothers, is especially cruel.” Videla had targeted union organisers, students, journalists and anyone else perceived to be associated with communism.

Business Home Depot at record high

Apple hammered in US Senate over tax strategies

U.S. stocks were little changed in early trading yesterday with Home Depot at a record high and buoying the blue-chips while investors eyed congressional testimony from Fed chairman Ben Bernanke today. The housing market recovery helped Home Depot report higher quarterly sales and earnings, prompting the world’s largest home improvement chain to boost its sales outlook for the year. Its shares rose 2.3 per cent to $78.53 after hitting a record of $79.40. Housing will continue to be a tailwind for stocks and an engine for economic growth in the foreseeable future according to Jack De Gan, chief investment officer at Harbor Advisory Corp in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The US economic calendar is thin and the market will continue to be vulnerable with the S&P and Dow industrials near record highs. However, the expectation of continuing accommodative monetary policy from the Federal Reserve should continue to lend support to equities. “There’s not strong enough evidence one way or another to change monetary policy,” De Gan said, adding that with all the support the Fed has given to equities there are also “fundamental reasons” driving the market. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 7.27 points or 0.05 per cent, to 15,328.01, the S&P 500 lost 3.27 points or 0.2 per cent, to 1,663.02 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 8.6 points or 0.25 per cent, to 3,487.84. The small- and mid-cap Russell 2000 continued to face technical resistance at the 1,000 point level but was within two points of its all time closing high.

APPLE Inc came under fire yesterday at a Senate hearing over an investigation that alleged the U.S. high technology icon has kept billions of dollars in profits in Irish subsidiaries and paid little or no taxes to any government. “Apple effectively shifts billions of dollars in profits offshore, profits that under one section of the tax code should nonetheless be subject to US taxes, but through a complex process avoids those taxes,” said Senator Carl Levin. Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook was slated to testify to the subcommittee at the hearing, along with other senior executives of the company. As chairman of the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, Levin frequently dives into complex tax issues. His latest probe targets one of America’s most successful companies, with a powerful global brand. Offshore tax avoidance by multinational companies has become a high-profile issue. Cash-strapped governments worldwide are increasingly focused on wringing more tax revenue from corporations that often have interests in many countries and easily shift

Apple Operations International, a subsidiary of Apple Inc in Hollyhill, Cork, in the south of Ireland. Ireland said yesterday it was not to blame for Apple Inc’s low global tax payments after the US Senate said the company paid little or nothing on tens of billions of dollars in profits stashed in Irish subsidiaries capital and assets across national borders. The Levin inquiry comes at a turbulent time in tax circles, with the US Internal Revenue Service under investigation over targeting by IRS agents of conservative political groups. The impact of that controversy and Levin’s allega-

tions on the potential for a thorough overhaul of the US tax code were hard to predict. Tax law writers in Congress had been inching forward on such a project before the IRS scandal erupted earlier this month. Levin’s inquiry has been under way for months.

Levin urged closing “unjustified tax loopholes” like those he said Apple used to avoid $9 billion in US taxes in 2012. “Closing these kinds of unjustified loopholes could provide hundreds of billions of dollars to reduce the deficit and avert damaging budget cuts,” said

Levin, a Democrat, at the hearing. “We should close them and dedicate the revenue that generates to these important priorities, whether or not we reform the overall tax code,” he said. Senator John McCain praised Apple as an American business success story, but he said that Apple’s corporate tax strategy “reflects a flawed corporate tax system”. The former Republican presidential nominee said, “It is a system that allows large multinational corporations to shift profits offshore to low-tax jurisdictions. “For years, Apple has opted to forego fully contributing to the US Treasury and to American society by shifting profits and circumventing US taxes.” Subcommittee staffers said on Monday that Apple was not breaking any laws and had cooperated fully with the inquiry. On Monday, Apple said in a comment posted online that it does not use “tax gimmicks”. It said the existence of its “Apple Operations International” unit in Ireland does not reduce Apple’s U.S. tax liability and the company will pay more than $7 billion in US taxes in fiscal 2013. At the hearing, Levin’s subcommittee issued a 40page memorandum focused on explaining allegations that Apple had used three subsidiaries with no “tax residency” in Ireland, where company executives manage those companies. The main subsidiary, a holding company that includes Apple’s retail stores throughout Europe, has not paid any corporate income tax in the last five years, the subcommittee said.

BRITISH retailer Marks & Spencer posted its lowest annual profit since 2009 yesterday, hit by a drop in clothing sales, and said growth this financial year would be held back by investments online and in logistics. The 129-year-old firm, battling to reverse seven straight quarters of falling underlying sales in clothing and homewares, said it expected a stronger performance next fiscal year, when new fashion ranges deliver results and capital spending falls. At that point, it would look at improving returns for shareholders, it said yesterday. Marks & Spencer (M&S) shares, up around 30 per cent over the past year amid periodic bouts of bid speculation but still well down on their 2007 highs, rose over 4 per cent in morning trade. “Lower capex (capital spending) guidance for 2013-14 onwards ... could mean

M&S has been hit by a drop in clothing sales improved dividends, share buybacks or even a one-off payout,” said Panmure Gordon analyst Jean Roche. M&S is spending about 2.4 billion pounds ($3.7 billion) over three years on store revamps, logistics, IT and systems, as well as selective investment overseas, as it seeks to become an international multi-channel retailer, connecting with customers

through stores, the internet and mobile devices. But it has struggled in a faltering economy and lost market share in its core womenswear business. Chief executive Marc Bolland is pinning his hopes on autumn/winter ranges that were unveiled last week by his new general merchandise team to generally positive reviews.

BRITAIN’S Royal Mail more than doubled annual profit on the back of an online shopping boom, providing a timely boost as it plans for a stock market listing this year. In a marked turnaround for a business that has been fighting to adapt to a more competitive market and falling letter volumes, Royal Mail reported adjusted operating profit of £403 million ($613 million) in the year to March 31, against £152 million a year earlier. The increase reflected the impact of growing parcel volumes fuelled by internet shopping, alongside price rises and cost cuts after modernising its sorting operations. Parcel volumes rose 9 per cent to account for almost half of Royal Mail’s revenue. An initial public offering (IPO) is expected to value the state-owned business at £2-3 billion - Britain’s biggest privatisation for 20 years. Royal Mail has 150,000 staff and annual sales of £9.15 billion. Momentum behind privatisation began gathering pace last year after the European Commission cleared the government to take on Royal Mail’s hefty pension liabilities and regulators gave the green light for the business to increase prices. Despite fierce union opposition, Britain is pushing ahead with plans to privatise the company this financial year to give it access to external capital for future investment. It expects to appoint lead bank advisers within weeks. After yesterday’s results, Chief Executive Moya Greene said that she had been meeting potential investors in Britain, the United States and Canada. “I’m speaking largely to long-only, high-quality investors that would normally participate in an IPO of this scale; investors like pension funds and mutual funds,” she said. “I would say the response has been positive.”

Opinion

Threat to society is from the hooligans, not the police FAILURE and ineptitude have marked our society’s efforts to deal with football hooliganism. At the weekend, a group of masked hooligans decided to attack policemen on duty by the Apoel clubhouse, throwing stones, firecrackers and Molotov cocktails at the officers. The hooligans managed to set a police patrol car ablaze, which was completely destroyed by the fire, before they fled. Nobody was arrested and we did not hear many politicians condemn this disgraceful act of vandalism, presumably because hooligans are voters. Three weeks earlier, after police had fired teargas to disperse a mob of hooligans who were pelting them with chairs and tiles outside the GSP stadium, the politicians, including minister of justice Ionas Nicolaou, reserved the worst criticism for the police. Opinion was unanimous that police overreacted in using tear-gas, Nicolaou apologising to the public and saying that officers were not adequately trained. It was a quite incredible statement by the minister, probably influenced by complaints that the teargas had drifted into the stadium affecting small children. What if the tear-gas was not used and one of the missiles being thrown by the hooligans had hit a small child? The minister should have apologised about the tear-gas affecting children but argued that police had to use drastic measures to deal with violent youths who are out of control. Instead, he deflected public attention away from the hooligans and made the police the culprits. This seems, almost always, to be the case when there is football violence, with the media also lending its support to the detractors of the police who are always accused of using excessive force to quell trouble. It is another illustration of the despicable populism that plagues public life and would eventually lead to anarchy. If the police use excessive force, as the media and politicians always claim, there would be much fewer acts of hooliganism now. On the contrary, incidents of hooliganism are on the rise as a result of the police not using enough force when dealing with troublemakers for fear of being criticised by politicians and the media. If we are to quash hooliganism, the politicians, media and football authorities must realise that the threat to society is from the hooligans, not the police, and give full public backing to the force at all times. Do they not realise the harm they are causing by hooligans being portrayed as victims of excessive police violence? Today there will be 380 policemen, including members of the rapid response unit, on duty at the Tsirion stadium in Limassol for the Cyprus Cup final in order to ensure there is no crowd trouble; a helicopter will also be available. In effect the taxpayer will be paying tens of thousands of euros for the policing of a football match because our political leadership is afraid to be tough on hooligans.

Pitfalls temper triumph of new Turkey grading Analysis Paul Taylor

T

urkey’s achievement of investment-grade status crowns a decade of rapid growth, financial stability and political reform by a “tiger” economy on the seam of Europe and Asia, but the rising power still faces pitfalls in a dangerous neighbourhood. Moody’s Investors Service raised its rating on Ankara’s sovereign bonds to Baa3, or investment grade, from Ba1 late last Thursday, following in the footsteps of Fitch credit ratings agency, which took that step last November. The upgrade came on a day when Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan was showcasing Turkey’s global prestige on a visit to the White House, and in a week when the emerging nation of 75 million made a final loan repayment to the International Monetary Fund. “It was a major strategic step for Turkey,” said Erdal Tanas Karagol, economic director of the SETA think-tank in Ankara. “This will help the current ruling party prepare long-term plans, to set higher goals and will create a suitable international environment to carry out those plans.” The boost puts Turkey 11 notches on Moody’s rating scale above historic rival Greece, on the other side of the European Union frontier, and should drive more foreign direct investment (FDI) to an economy that still has great potential to grow. “The ratings agencies are finally catching up with the fact that the Turkish government has done a huge amount of work in the last decade to put the country onto a stronger economic and political footing,” said Simon QuijanoEvans, head of emerging market research at Commerzbank in London. Government debt has fallen to 30 per cent of gross domestic product from more than 100 per cent in the crisis years early last decade. Inflation and the budget deficit are falling. Turkey’s IMF programme and candidacy to join the EU provided a strong policy anchor in the early years of Erdogan’s mildly Islamist conservative AK party government from 2003. But the pace of political reform has slowed as EU accession talks have run into the sand due to Cypriot and French obstruction. “There is a sense of a lost anchor,” said Sinan Ulgen, chairman of the Istanbul Centre for Economics and Foreign Policy Studies, EDAM. The EU had lost influence on issues such as media freedom, tolerance of dissent and freedom of expression because Turks no longer believed they were wanted inside the European bloc. Rights groups complain Erdogan is falling short on democracy. Ulgen said the rating upgrade was a triple vote of confidence in the resilience of the Turkish economy despite Europe’s debt crisis, in sound economic and

The upgrade came on a day when Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan was showcasing Turkey’s global prestige on a visit to the White House, and in a week when the emerging nation made a final loan repayment to the IMF fiscal management, and in a strengthened geopolitical relationship with the West. “Turkey is a stable partner for the United States in a region which is likely to remain unstable for years to come,” Ulgen said of Washington’s NATO ally. So far, instability in Syria, Iraq and between Iran and Western powers has barely affected Turkey’s fast rising prosperity, even if it has undermined the government’s declared policy of “zero problems with the neighbours”. A recent double car bombing on its southern frontier highlighted the risk of Syria’s civil war spilling across the border, with the Turks harbouring more than 100,000 Syrian refugees, including military defectors and rear bases for rebels fighting former Turkish ally President Bashar al-Assad. Worsening internal strife in Iraq and the possibility of a Western or Israeli military strike on Iran’s nuclear programme also pose security risks for Turkey.

But Ulgen said it was the country’s internal political future that posed the biggest challenge to its peaceful rise as a regional power with global ambitions. “The biggest challenge is whether Turkey is going to succeed in reaching a settlement with its own Kurds,” he said. The conflict has killed 40,000 people in the last three decades. Talks between the Ankara government and jailed separatist leader Abdullah Ocalan led to a historic ceasefire declaration by the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) in March under which fighters began withdrawing from positions in southeastern Turkey last week. The peace plan, popular in opinion polls so far, is a gamble for Erdogan who could face a national backlash before elections next year if it stumbles. “An unstable environment, deriving from any political risk, could jolt the economy to a strong and unexpected degree

‘An unstable environment, deriving from any political risk, could jolt the economy to a strong and unexpected degree, despite the positive outlook’

despite the positive outlook,” said Mehmet Altan, professor of political economy at Istanbul University. A senior NATO source who has long dealt with Turkey said Ankara faced a deteriorating regional security environment and had become a recipient of NATO protection with allied Patriot missiles deployed on its soil for the third time since 1991. The source said Washington was keen for Turkey to repair damaged ties with Israel and ease tension with Cyprus at a time when the discovery of new offshore gas reserves in the eastern Mediterranean could be a win-win proposition for all sides. Ankara has the alliance’s second largest armed forces after the United States. A key achievement of Erdogan’s government has been gradually to cement civilian control over the military in a country which witnessed three coups between 1960 and 1981. Quijano-Evans said the ratings upgrade should drive more FDI into Turkey, which had attracted less than its share compared to other emerging markets. That could help the country press ahead with import substitution policies in areas such as metals and petrochemicals to reduce its current account deficit, and diversify its exports away from its depressed core market in western Europe. It could also help with a number of ambitious grand projects including a third major international airport for Istanbul, a “Kanal Istanbul” shipping lane to be carved out parallel to the Bosphorus from the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara, and a bid to host the 2020 Olympic Games. In the economic as well as the political and diplomatic spheres, some analysts see a risk of “imperial overreach” as Turkey’s global ambitions rise. Ulgen said Erdogan’s effort to reshape the constitution to create a strong executive presidential system with himself at the pinnacle was one such risk. But dogged opposition, including within Erdogan’s own party, meant he was unlikely to succeed. “We see the risk of overreach very clearly in foreign policy on Syria, where Turkey thought it had much more ability to influence governments in the region and it hasn’t been able to push out Assad,” he said. But the NATO source, speaking on condition of anonymity because the alliance does not comment on its members’ policies, said there was a risk of hubris as Erdogan sought to build a legacy comparable with that of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, who founded modern Turkey after the collapse of the Ottoman empire. “Turkey wants to call itself a global power,” he said. “It has great potential but it still has a lot of problems and difficult relations in the neighbourhood.” Paul Taylor is based in Paris, editing and writing about politics and economics in Europe and beyond. He has been a Reuters correspondent for 33 years.

Duo charged with reigniting flagging Fox series

By Eric Kelsey

By Eric Kelsey POP singer Kelly Rowland and Mexican singer-actress Paulina Rubio have signed onto The X Factor judging panel replacing Britney Spears and music mogul L.A. Reid, the Fox television talent competition produced by Simon Cowell said yesterday. Rowland, who rose to fame with R&B group Destiny’s Child, and Rubio will be charged with re-igniting the Fox series that failed to stave off falling ratings after giving Spears a reported $15 million salary last year. Rowland, 32, and Rubio, 41, will join Cowell, 53, and pop singer Demi Lovato, 20, on the judging panel. “It’s taken more than a decade but I’m delighted to finally be on a panel with three girls (I think!). Paulina and Kelly both have great taste and massive experience in the music industry and together with Demi, this is going to be a fun panel. It just feels like the time to do something different,” Cowell said in a statement. Cowell has revamped the judging panel after each season, firing singers Paula Abdul and Nicole Scher-

Grammy-winning Mexican artist Paulina Rubio (left) is one of Latin music’s best-known stars, while Kelly Rowland has expanded into a solo career outside of Destiny’s Child zinger following a disappointing first season in the ratings. The X Factor viewership fell to an average 9.7 million per episode from about 12.5 million in 2011. Rowland, who has expanded into a solo career outside of Destiny’s Child, joined the judges panel on the UK X Factor in 2011, bringing with her 20 years of experience in the music industry.

Grammy-winning artist Rubio is one of Latin music’s best-known stars, with more than 20 million records sold worldwide. Alongside her role in The X Factor, she will also be one of three musical coaches on La Voz Kids, the Spanishlanguage version of The Voice, a singing competition on Telemundo, aimed at children. “I’m so thrilled to be part

of the show as a judge. Simon, be careful what you wish for, let’s see if you are ready to handle me, empieza la fiesta, amigo!” Rubio said in a statement. Fox network’s The X Factor, which Cowell created in Britain in 2004 and brought to the United States in 2011, hands out a $5 million prize and record contract on Sony Music Entertainment’s Epic Records label.

Previous winners from the UK counterpart include pop singer Leona Lewis and boy band One Direction, both enjoying international success. The show will enter its third season this fall, and auditions began yesterday in Charleston, South Carolina, and run through July to find the upcoming season’s crop of aspiring singers to compete for the prize.

Prince reigns over his own Lohan ‘struggling’ with rehab music releases in new deal US singer Prince has signed a new deal with Kobalt Music Group to market and distribute his future work without giving up control over his rights, the company said. The singer-songwriter, who is famed for changing his name to an unpronounceable symbol in a wrangle over musical rights, will release his own work as well as a slate of new music by other artists that he produces, Kobalt said. The announcement came just hours after the 54-year-old Prince was given a Billboard Icon Award (lifetime achievement) and rocked the Billboard Music Awards ceremony with a version of his 'Let’s Go Crazy' dressed in electric green trousers and sporting an Afro hair style. Kobalt, which is also a global independent music publishing company, launched an artist and label services division in 2012, allowing artists to maintain ownership of their work and control over when, how and where they will release their music. Traditional labels often take ownership or part-ownership of the artist’s material and often dictate how it is used, an increasingly important sticking point in an industry where digital music can be instantly available. “This new venture gives Prince the flexibility and freedom he’s always sought in a label partner,” Kobalt President Richard Sanders said in a statement. The Grammy award-winning singer will also provide artist development and recording services for newly signed artists that Kobalt will market and distribute.

The troubled actress has been packing on the pounds while in rehab at the Betty Ford Clinic

LINDSAY Lohan is said to be struggling with her latest stint in rehab. The Liz & Dick actress is currently at the Betty Ford Clinic in California - with another three months left on her 90-day court-ordered stay - and friends worry she is lacking ‘energy’ since her Adderall was taken away. The troubled star, 26, has had the medication - which she has claimed is to treat her ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) - stopped by doctors at the clinic and those close to her think it’s harming her progress. An insider told RadarOnline.com: “Lindsay just doesn’t want to be there. She was forced to go to Betty Ford by the judge instead of going to jail. “The actress looks extremely haggard, her face is bloated, and it doesn’t look like she has brushed her hair in days”.

RAY Manzarek, a founding member and keyboardist of 1960s rock group The Doors, has died at a medical clinic in Germany at age 74 following a battle with cancer, the group’s manager Tom Vitorino said. Manzarek, who lived in Northern California’s Napa Valley wine country for the past decade, had been seeking treatment in Germany for bile duct cancer, Vitorino said. He died in Rosenheim, Germany, surrounded by his wife and brothers. Singer Jim Morrison and then-UCLA film student Manzarek formed The Doors in 1965 after a chance meeting at Los Angeles’ Venice Beach, and Manzarek’s keyboard work would go on to be a touchstone of hits like 'Break On Through' to the Other Side and ‘Light My Fire'. The band, which was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993, sold some 100 million records since its heyday with psychedelic-era classics such as 1971’s 'Riders on the Storm’. Manzarek’s electric organ was a defining aspect next to Morrison’s booming voice in the band’s blues- and jazzinfluenced take on rock and roll. “I was deeply saddened to hear about the passing of my friend and bandmate Ray Manzarek,” The Doors guitarist Robby Krieger said in a statement. “I’m just glad to have been able to have played Doors songs with him for the last decade. Ray was a huge part of my life and I will always miss him.” The Doors broke up shortly after Morrison’s death from heart failure in 1971, but their mythology exploded following the 1980 publication of the biography No One Here Gets Out Alive and the 1991 film, The Doors, by director Oliver Stone. The band recorded a total of eight albums between 1967 and 1972. After the band’s break up, Manzarek released two albums with the rock band Nite City in the late 1970s and six solo albums, most recently Translucent Blues in 2011 with blues-rock guitarist Roy Rogers. Manzarek and Krieger became locked in a legal battle with drummer John Densmore in 2003 after the two reunited under The Doors name and later ‘The Doors of the 21st Century’, but were finally forced to tour as Manzarek-Krieger. Manzarek, who was born in Chicago in 1939, embraced old age in a 2006 interview. “We occupy these bodies for 70, 80, 90 years, and it’s so much fun being alive that you want to keep this thing as fresh as you possibly can,” he said. Manzarek is also the author of two novels and most notably the 1998 memoir, Light My Fire: My Life with The Doors.

Education

Parents are urged to take more active role

Fewer young people are pursuing further study

Modern lifestyle taking its toll on primary school children

THERE has been a fall in the proportion of young people in the UK who are continuing their education through everything from full-time study to evening classes, research suggests. It reveals a seven percentage point drop in the number of 17 to 24-yearolds who are taking part in learning. Around one in five adults (19 per cent) are currently involved in some type of learning, according to the report, published by the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE), while just under two fifths (38 per cent) say they have taken part in some form of education in the past three years. But it raises concerns about falls among young people, and unemployed adults, who are becoming less likely to continue studying in some form. The report, published to mark Adult Learners’ Week this week, is based on a survey of 5,253 adults aged 17 and older, who were asked if they still take part in education. This could be anything from full or part time study on a daily basis, studying at home or work, or through an evening class, and study that does not lead to a new qualification. The findings show that 70 per cent of young people aged 17 to 24 are involved in some form of learning, down from 77 per cent last year. It also shows a six percentage point drop among unemployed people. The survey suggests that the majority of people continue their learning for work-related reasons, which could explain the “significant differences” between the rates of workers, unemployed adults and those outside of the workforce who are participating in learning.

Maths made easy

Struggling with maths? Plug in to improve By Kate Kelland APPLYING painless but targeted electrical stimulation to parts of the brain that play a role in number manipulation may in future be a way to help people who struggle with maths, scientists said last week. Researchers who experimented with a type of brain stimulation called transcranial random noise stimulation (TRNS) found that in less than a week it improved students’ performance in both calculation and rote learning of mathematical tasks. The researchers stressed this was a small, early-stage study with more research required, but said the technique may one day help people with learning problems or neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s. It could also help people reach their full potential in maths and other tricky subjects. The experiment involved 51 students from Oxford who were asked to perform two arithmetic tasks testing their calculation and rote learning abilities over a five-day period. Around half the volunteers were given TRNS while performing the tasks each day. “With just five days of cognitive training and non-invasive, painless brain stimulation, we were able to bring about long-lasting improvements in cognitive and brain functions,” said Roi Cohen Kadoshof Britain’s Oxford University, who led the study. The improved performance was maintained for six months after the stimulation and training, he said. TRNS applies random electrical noise to targeted regions of the cortex - a part of the brain important for memory and attention - through stimulation electrodes placed on the surface of the scalp. It is non-invasive, painless and relatively cheap. Publishing his findings in the journal Current Biology, Cohen Kadosh said it was not entirely clear how the stimulation works, but evidence suggests it helps the brain work more efficiently by making neurons fire more synchronously.

PARENTS should give their children “lots of hugs”, play games and ensure youngsters get enough sleep, according to new advice from headteachers. They are also urging families to eat dinner together and make time for homework, reading and talking. The advice is contained in a new leaflet published by the British National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) and Family Action, and comes amid concerns that parents need to take more responsibility for making sure their children are ready to learn when they arrive at school each day. Pressures on family life mean that high numbers of children are turning up for lessons tired and hungry, and going home to families that do not have routines, or adults that help with youngsters’ learning, the organisations warned. They said many parents were not aware of how important they were in making sure their child was ready for school. The two organisations announced details of their new partnership at the NAHT’s annual conference in Birmingham last weekend, along with plans to develop a series of leaflets to encourage parents to work with teachers. The first leaflet, on school readiness, tells parents that it is “really important to talk to your child and listen to them”. It adds: “Finding time for both can be so difficult with busy lives!” It goes on to give advice on spending time together, including suggestions that parents should share books and games in a quiet environment, rather than in front of the television, play games, encourage them to exercise

Head teachers are urging parents to ensure the whole family eats together regularly and “give lots of hugs and praise”. There are also tips on family routines, such as setting regular bedtimes, making sure children have a healthy breakfast, and having a regular time for a meal together in the evening. The leaflet warns that too many late bedtimes can make it harder for children to learn, and they need sleep to be able to concentrate in school. Under-fives need up to 15 hours, primary school children 10 hours, and older youngsters need nine hours of sleep, it said. The two organisations said the new campaign aimed to help boost attainment in

schools. NAHT president Bernadette Duffy said: “All school leaders know the important role that parents play in ensuring their children come to school ready to learn. “Some of the advice in the leaflets may seem obvious but for some parents, especially those who did not receive the advice from their own parents that many families take for granted, getting clear and simple guidance can help them focus on what they need to do to help their children get the best from their education.” David Holmes, chief executive of Family Action, said: “Relatively simple things that every parent can do

such as making sure children get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast and just talking to children about their day at school can be a hugely important part of getting them ready to learn. “We are looking forward to working with NAHT to emphasise these important messages to parents.” There have been rising concerns in recent years that children are increasingly arriving for school each day unprepared to learn. Last year, England’s Education Secretary Michael Gove acknowledged there was a group of youngsters who were starting school who were still in nappies and unable to speak in full sentences.

schools report French Cypriot school in race against hunger

Students from the school taking part in the charity event

THE FRENCH Cypriot school has taken part in the “Race against Hunger”, an international event organised every year by Action against Hunger (Action contre la Faim). This humanitarian campaign, which the school organised on May 17, aims to raise funds in order to help a country which is suffering from famine and poverty. This year, Action against Hunger is helping Bangladesh, a country whose plight made front page news after a textile factory collapsed, causing the deaths of more than 1000 people. Students had to run laps with the minimum distance being one kilometre and the maximum 10 kilometres. Each student was in charge of finding sponsors who would donate a given sum of money to Action against Hunger for each kilometre they had run. Nursery school pupils also made a

‘Drawing against Hunger’. About 150 students, from kindergarten to high school, took part in the race in the presence of Jean-Luc Florent, the French Ambassador in Nicosia, as well as their teachers and many parents. As the school headmistress said: “We wish our students all the best success in their studies, but we are also in charge of raising conscientious, united, compassionate and responsible citizens who will respect each other as well as the environment. Regular participation of the school in charity or environmental protection campaigns helps them to find and follow this path.” On June 9, the school will also take part, alongside numerous other organisations, in ‘Care 4 Kids’, an event which aims to help Cypriot children in need (at Acropolis Park).

Lifestyle Boy George talks to Nick Curtis about his latest gig, his new album - and new life

‘Meltd classy,

Heyday: a younger version of Boy George

“I

’VE been here for ages!” says Boy George, looming from the corner of the café near his home in London’s Hampstead Heath, where I’ve been heedlessly waiting for him, to discuss his forthcoming appearance in Yoko Ono’s Meltdown Festival at the Southbank Centre. “This keeps happening. No one recognises me.” This is not said with the stroppy, don’t-you-knowwho-I-am petulance we’d come to expect from the singer when he was the poster-boy for wounded androgyny as the lead singer of Culture Club in the Eighties, and latterly a queen bitch as well known for drug troubles as for his work as a solo artist and in-demand DJ.

Community service: Boy George cleaning the streets in America

Rather, the man born George O’Dowd exudes a droll satisfaction that he is, at 51, truly unrecognisable. The pasty, podgy, painted figure of yore is now trim, clear-eyed and surprisingly handsome, with fine, newly revealed bone structure covered by a scruffy russet beard and skin laced with blue tattoos. “I don’t want to give an interview about the size of my arse,” he says, but it is the elephant in the room so we get it out of the way first. The change is partly down to nutritionist Amelia Freer’s Metabolic Plan, which replaces yo-yo diets with three nutritionally balanced meals a day, and about which he is evangelical. “I’ve sent hundreds of peo-

ple to her. My mum’s done it, my brother’s on it. It really works and the shocking thing is it’s really easy. When you start you don’t exercise at all but then you kind of want to. Now I get up twice a week at half past five in order to train at seven o’clock, and on Saturdays, if I’m around, at eight. It’s like TRX training, core stuff, really complicated and difficult but enjoyable. If you’d told me 10 years ago I’d enjoy exercise…” The physical transformation has been long, hard work and has gone hand in hand with an equally arduous psychological recalibration. Addicted to heroin from the mid-Eighties, he lost friends to overdoses and was arrested several times for drug offences; in 2006 he

was sentenced to five days’ community service in the US for falsely reporting a burglary, and in 2009 served four months of a 15-month sentence for falsely imprisoning an escort in 2007. “I got clean in 2008 and have just celebrated five years sober,” he says. “I know I am an addict, that I can’t even have one cigarette on a beach, because I’d have 50. I stopped smoking two years ago - best thing I’ve ever done. I know I always need to be mindful, and if I find myself in a situation where people are taking drugs, I remove myself. It’s not even about temptation, just not wanting to be in that kind of atmosphere.” More important even than mastering his addictions was the realisation that he’d always approached his career in a half-hearted way, and his personal life - including his fraught relationship with Culture Club’s drummer Jon Moss - as an arena for drama (“what a waste of time and energy!”). Professionally, he tries to be polite, professional, punctual. “I was early to meet you,” he says pointedly. As for his personal life, “I have a friend, and have had for quite some time, though I used to have a very clear idea of what love was. Now I have no idea, which I think is better.” The new mental equilibrium did leave him wondering what to write about for This Is What I Do, the album he will showcase at Meltdown, though. “None of the songs on this record are necessarily about me for a change,” he says. “I’ve had to write in a different way because I’m not in a bad place and I’m not heartbroken so there’s no one I want revenge on.”

So there are some tracks that deal with sexuality and with letting go of romantic obsession and even one tangentially about his late father. “Some of it’s like Patsy Cline, some of it’s like Hair the musical and some of it’s like Sesame Street,” he says. This Is What I Do - not due out on George’s own Very Me

label until the autumn and not yet available for me to listen to - grew out of a planned Culture Club reunion which was put on hold last year. Not, George stresses, because of any personal or artistic disagreements, although he thinks the other members still expect him to be “irrational, unpredictable, whatever”.

down’s , isn’t it?

He’s excited about debuting the new album at Meltdown, the second time he’s played the avantgarde festival

He just didn’t think “that we were match ready. We needed a lot more work. Personally, I think there’s a much more glamorous and sophisticated ending for Culture Club. I do want to do another album with them and tour America but I want to do it in the most classy, grown-up way possible.”

He’s excited about debuting the new album at Meltdown, the second time he’s played the avant-garde festival. “It’s classy, isn’t it?” he says. “I played with Antony [Hegarty of Antony and the Johnsons, in the 2012 Meltdown which Hegarty curated] and it was a listening audience, which is what I need.”

The call from Ono, this year’s guest director, was a strange piece of serendipity. “I’m a big fan of Yoko,” he says, “one of those weird people who really love her music, and who argues with people all the time, because people do write her off. What I like about her is that she obviously doesn’t need the money: she’s not

Culture Club: Boy George with other members of the 80s giants and (below) one of their more popular releases

doing this to make a buck. And I just like the noise she makes. I’ve covered a Yoko song, ‘The Death of Samantha’, on my album, and I also mention her in a track called ‘Bigger Than War’. There’s a chant on it that goes ‘bigger than the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, bigger than Elvis but not Yoko’. So getting the call to do Meltdown was really weird.” George’s ability to move around musical genres, and collaborate with the likes of Antony Hegarty and Mark Ronson, has arguably kept him fresh and relevant, though he disputes the idea and thinks “I am just becoming more like me”. His oldest friend, club promoter Philip Salon, recently told him he’d recaptured the spirit of the “19-year-old Irish boy” he was when they were both hanging around the squats and New Romantic clubs of London. George also remains firm friends with the Blitz club face and Visage star Steve Strange, and is due to photograph him for the gay magazine Beige, but the famously feckless Strange has “already failed to turn up twice”.

George is appreciative of his Eighties success, but not nostalgic for it. “It enabled me to do what I do now but too many people in this business are wedded to the past,” he says. That decade was “amazing, great, but would I want to do all that again? No thank you. What a horrible nightmare, like Groundhog Day.” He seems sanguine that Culture Club’s massive success (four Top 10 albums and nine Top 10 singles) has been supplanted by a portmanteau career of self-produced albums, highly successfully DJ stints, photography and fashion design. And he certainly won’t diss any of today’s artists, although a few rabid One Direction fans are still threatening him on Twitter after he claimed Liam Payne had refused to pose for a photo with his niece at the Brits. “People talk about trolls,” he says. “Just block ’em. The really amazing thing is how sweet most people are on Twitter. Most of the haters are laughable. And we all remember what it’s like to be 19: in six months’ time you’ll hate One Direction and be

really embarrassed you sent me that tweet.” I ask if he thinks things are better for gay men than they were in the Eighties, when even the most obviously homosexual still had to hedge (George himself famously said he preferred a cup of tea to sex). This prompts some flashes of the old vitriol. He says he travels enough through repressive countries to realise that gay men in the UK are lucky but “we shouldn’t have to feel lucky. I am shocked we are still having debates like gay marriage. On one hand, I think it’s very conservative to want to get married, that it’s a case of ‘if we’re more like them, they’ll like us more’. But on the other hand, who cares? The idea that it is somehow going to destroy civilisation is so retarded. Nigel Farage said Cameron was ‘wasting his time’ on gay marriage. Is he stupid? Why should we feel privileged to have equality? I would never vote Tory but I wish Cameron had put it in the Queen’s Speech.” The green eyes are hard. “Have some balls, man,” says Boy George. “Have some balls.”

Family and friends pay tribute to Niki ki FOR THOSE with a love of poetry and literature, Friday should find you at the Famagusta Gate in Nicosia. The evening will be dedicated to the late literary figure Niki Marangou whose birthday would have been tomorrow. The Cypriot writer and painter died in a car accident on February 7 in the Egyptian city of Al-Fayyum. The upcoming event has been organised by her friends and family as a tribute to her life and work. The event will include a screening of Vouvoula Skoura’s video Water Surfaces. The 14-minute video shows a series of images set to the voice of Marangou reading her poems and music in the background. It also shows Marangou walking through the buffer zone in Cyprus and in an abandoned house. Marangou’s new poetry collection For a Faint Idea by Professor of Modern Greek Literature Frangiski Ampazopoulou will also be presented. The poetry collection was published by Rimal Publications. Adriani Maleni and Lenia Sorokou will also be reciting poems from the new collection. Nicolette Demetriou will sing ‘Sto Periyiali to Kryfo’, lyrics by George Seferis and music by Mikis Theodorakis and Nicolette Demetriou will also sing the traditional Cypriot song ‘To Yiasemi.’

Selma Ancira will present the publication of The Sea, a book written by Marangou in Greek, which includes an English translation with photography by Selma Ancira. The book tells the story of the narrator and uncle going to the harbour and onboard ships then passing the Venetian lions and Saint Nicholas church. Marangou was born in Limassol in 1948. She studied sociology in West Berlin from 1965 to 1970 then worked for ten years as a dramaturge at the State Theatre of Cyprus. From 1980 to 2007, Marangou owned and ran Kochlias Bookshop in Nicosia. She has published many books of prose, poetry and children’s fairy tales and won state prizes for her literary work. In 1998, she won the Cavafy Prize for Poetry in Alexandria. In 2004 her poem ‘Roses’ was chosen to be hung in waiting rooms in NHS Hospitals in the UK. In 2006 she received the Athens Academy poetry award for her book Divan. In May 2008 her book The Demon Of Lust was nominated in Athens as one the ten best short stories of the year for the Diavazo Awards. Her poems are included in the European Constitution in Verse of the Brussels Poetry Collective (2009) and in the CD Nachrichten von der Poesie (Random House) edited by Joachim Sartorius.

Music Red moon rising

Marangou was a member of the Hellenic Authors Society and the Cyprus Writers Association and had seven exhibitions of her work in painting. She died in a car accident in Egypt in February 2013. Marangou continues to be a very strong part of Cypriot culture and literature. At the first TEDxNicosia event on March 9 there was a reading of her poem ‘A Street Map of Nicosia’. Throughout the reading there was an old map of Nicosia on the screen. One of the organisers of the event said that she had met with Marangou some time ago and Marangou had mentioned how she would love to speak at the TEDx event and so this reading was a tribute in her absence. It’s also worth mentioning that the next issues of Cadences, a journal of Literature and Arts in Cyprus published by the European University of Cyprus, will be dedicated to Marangou, who contributed to the journal on many occasions and also supported the editorial team. An Evening for Niki An event dedicated to award-winning author and artist Niki Marangou, with video screening, presentation of her new poetry, book presentation, music and more. May 24. Famagusta Gate, in Nicosia. 7.30pm By Maria Gregoriou

This Weekend Theatre To love or forget? AFTER a successful run at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2010, Neos Kosmos Theatre is bringing DC Jackson’s acclaimed comedy My Romantic History to the Limassol stage. The theatre group will stage just two shows this weekend at the Rialto Theatre. Directed by Vangelis Theodoropoulos, this Greek-language adaptation is a modern-day comedy that takes the audience on a journey of cringe-worthy truths that will strike very close to home for many audience members. The premise of the play is given in the first line, “If you haven’t met someone by the time you graduate, you’re going to marry some idiot from your work. It’s that simple. Do you know how they get animals to breed in captivity? They put them in the

same cage”. And so we enter the enclosed, intimate world of filing cabinets, photocopier, desks and coffee breaks and the inevitable invitation for a drink after work. One moment you’re colleagues, then a quick grope after Friday night drinks and suddenly you’re in a relationship. Like many single thirty-

somethings, Tom and Amy are romantically desperate. When they get together after an office social they find themselves living in each other’s pockets. But it’s not their lack of chemistry that’s the problem: it’s that neither of them can quite get over their childhood sweethearts. A cast of three actors, Makis Papademetriou, Katerina

Lypiridou and Syrmo Keke will interpret all 21 roles in the play. They play themselves in flashback scenes, introducing the girlfriends, boyfriends and lost loves from their teenage years. At the heart of this piece is loneliness and it stands as a reminder of how our past shapes our future. Filled with witty lines, honest insights into modern relationships, the familiarity of it all will make audiences feel like they’re really watching their own romantic history. Neos Kosmos Theatre was founded in 1995 on the initiative of actor and director Vangelis Theodoropoulos and sponsored by the Greek Ministry of Culture. In 1997, the group found a permanent home and has since been staging classic European works and works by young and up-and-coming Greek and foreign authors. My Romantic History Neos Kosmos Theatre presents awardwinning comedy by D.C. Jackson. May 25-26. Rialto Theatre, Limassol. 8.30pm. €15/10. In Greek. Tel: 77-777745

MUSIC plays such a vital role in developing, motivating and uniting our community. It is wonderful to see the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra Foundation (CySO) providing accessible pathways to music for individuals of all ages and backgrounds across Cyprus. The CySO Foundation’s Community Outreach Concerts for the 2012-13 artistic season, titled Red Moon, continues this evening with a concert at the Events Hall in Alambra Primary School followed by a concert on Friday at the Pallas Theatre in Nicosia. The concert will be given by the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra Ensemble under the direction of maestro Roland Melia and featuring mezzo-soprano Katie Economidou as soloist. The programme is a delightful selection of works which will put you in the mood for summer romance and joy: selected songs by Manos Hadjidakis and pieces of the classical repertory inspired by dance forms as well as dances written for films. Economidou will interpret six beloved Hadjidakis songs including ‘Every Garden’, ‘The Moon is Red’ and ‘Wide Sea’ from his song cycle Roman Agora with texts full of poetic imagery speaking of love and nostalgia. The programme will start with Claude Debussy’s ‘Golliwogg’s Cake Walk’ (from Children’s Corner), a piece representing a ragtime-like dance. Next comes the carefree and poised ‘Quadrille’ (a popular 19th century high society ballroom dance) composed by Nino Rota for the movie Il Gattopardo followed by passionate dances such as the Spanish Andaluza by Granados and the Tango from Scent of a Woman by Gardel. The mysterious and dreamy ‘Hijo de la luna’ by Cano will follow and the programme rounds off with Shostakovich’s ‘Waltz no. 2’. The Ensemble of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra was created on the initiative of Alkis Baltas, Artistic Director/Chief Conductor of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra and is composed of musician performers permanently residing in Cyprus who collaborate as extra musicians with the Foundation. Its objective is the increased offer of educational and family concerts as well as community outreach concerts by the CySO Foundation. During the 2012-13 season the Ensemble has been scheduled to present four productions. The present community outreach concerts are the fourth and final production of the Ensemble for this season. The Community Outreach Programmes of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra Foundation are an important part of its artistic policy. They were launched in 2008 and their objective is to bring classical music and other types of orchestral music closer to the wider public by presenting it to venues other than the usual concerts halls. Red Moon Community outreach concert by the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra Ensemble under the direction of maestro Roland Melia and featuring mezzo-soprano Katie Economidou as soloist. 8pm. Free. Polisse (Novacinema2, 22.00) I apologise for all the French-ness in Pick of the Day this week. I like French people, their food is superb, their culture inspirational, the Eiffel Tower is a miracle of engineering - but this is the second French film in two days, and we’ve got a third coming up tomorrow! Sorry, non-French-speakers - but we can’t ignore Polisse, both because it won the Jury Prize at Cannes two years ago and because it’s so perversely ... um, French in its sensibility. The subject is child protection, our (fictional) heroes being the cops of the Juvenile Protection Unit - tracking down child molesters, working with abused kids and oversexed teens - but there’s none of the righteous moralism you’d expect in an

Anglo-Saxon equivalent, in fact the ending (a happy ending for one character cross-cut with a sad ending for another, seeming to argue for a more tolerant line on paedophilia) is incredibly un-PC. These cops are sloppy, flawed and often unprofessional - “Can’t we do a rape, or a gang rape? It’d be cooler for me” - and the film isn’t very good (director Maiwenn is notably bad as a toothy journalist) but it’s still a breath of fresh air. Vive la difference, and so forth. Made in 2011.

The Legend of Hell’s Gate (Plus TV, 22.45) The title sounds like horror, the subtitle (‘An American Conspiracy’) makes it sound political - yet the film is

actually a Western, telling the tale of three outlaws in 1870s Texas. They include Eric Balfour, whom you’ll know if you saw Skyline (he’s got the pointiest chin in Hollywood), and Henry Thomas who once played Elliot in E.T. - and the film is just a straight-to-DVD adventure but it’s got a decent story, taking in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln and a cliff formation known as Hell’s Gate, a haven for notorious outlaws and men on the run. “My husband gave up and went to bed. I stayed and watched to the end thinking it would pick up at any time. It just never did,” grumbles ‘kozykitten’ at the Internet Movie Database - but it’s probably worth a quick look, just to see how the kid from E.T. is doing these days. Made in 2011.

ARIES March 21 - April 20

LEO July 23 - August 22

SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 21

A breathless day is in prospect, partly because you will want to be part of so many different things. Your thinking can be very fertile, though to stop you jumping from subject to subject you do need to concentrate on those things which hold genuine interest and promise. Problem solving can seem easier however, as mental changes inspire.

You can find yourself thinking about your future plans and hopes. Some of these may be ripe for some updating. Think of this. We often work hard to achieve certain goals. Once they are in sight, or we have achieved them, they are no longer so important to us. This is where you may find yourself now, redefining your purpose.

The wonderful thing about life, and also the most challenging thing, is that we don’t have full control over our destiny. Sure, we can conduct ourselves in a productive and caring way, be good citizens, but we can’t have a complete grip on our prospects. The delicious side of this is when life surprises us in a positive way, and it can for you now.

TAURUS April 21 - May 21

VIRGO August 23 - September 23

CAPRICORN December 22 - January 20

If a new moneymaking opportunity looks good, then you might want to look deeper. Take a look at what you’ve got which includes any talents as well as cash in the bank, and think about how you can multiply it. An intuitive hunch may pay off, especially if it concerns a plan to start an internet business or a purchase that feels right.

By tonight the Moon moves into your ideas sector. In fact, some of your ideas may cook in the night as the Moon angles with the planet of dreamy inspiration, Neptune. Because your persona, how people see you, and your place in society as a whole is under the spotlight, some of your ideas may focus on self-employment or public duty.

You might decide to make some home changes on the spur of the moment. This can be especially true if you have been putting off getting to grips with something, which you know would make you happier if you addressed. Make a list of the outstanding things, then prioritise which is holding you back most. Then go for it.

GEMINI May 22 - June 21

LIBRA September 24 - October 23

AQUARIUS January 21 - February 19

Things can really start to flow well for you. But also you need to see this time, not just as one of increased energy, but also of planting the seeds of future growth. So don’t necessarily expect instant results. Follow your whim, but be conscious that any exciting themes you have will take time and application to achieve lasting solutions.

There is a sense of things opening up within you. You may feel experimental or restless. You are probably much less inclined at this time to just accept your lot. The risk taker in you is aroused. This doesn’t mean you will want to do white water rafting, but certainly pushing beyond your own previous boundaries can excite you.

Uranus is your funky co-ruler. Well, I say funky insofar as it’s an unpredictable influence, and gives you that zany edge which people can find testing or love to bits. I am in the latter category! And currently it can push you to dare to be different, but this could also bring up some vulnerabilities up. Can you take a walk on the wild side?

CANCER June 22 - July 22

SCORPIO October 24 - November 22

PISCES February 20 - March 20

You might find yourself a little more reclusive today. This needn’t be in a bad way, in fact, you may be more than happy to spend time mulling over recent events, pottering around in your garden, or just spending time reading or watching an interesting film. Some gentle escapism can be both relaxing and very soothing for you.

Any worries you have during today can seem less pressing by the time you look to wind down. Yet you may find your mind wandering, and you can be much more sensitive than usual. This is not a good time to doubt the information that feeds back into your consciousness. If you get an insight, try to trust it. We all do this, but work at it.

You might find yourself torn between going for what makes you feel comfortable and secure, or to follow your heart. You more than any other zodiac sign tends to have this dilemma on a repeated basis, but it can be more powerful at this time, mainly because money could be the factor that holds your hopes in sway.

Sport England ponder top-order problems ahead of Ashes

Garcia not planning Woods apology

Question marks remain over make-up of side

SERGIO Garcia has no intention of instigating peace talks with Tiger Woods following their clash at the Players Championship. Paired together in a third round at Sawgrass, it took less than two holes for longstanding tensions to come to the surface with Garcia feeling he was put off on his approach shot to the second by crowd noise caused by Woods preparing for his own shot from the trees. Woods insisted he had been told by a marshal that Garcia had already played before pulling a fairway wood from his bag, with the fans cheering the indication that the world number one would attempt to go for the green on the par five. Garcia, who confirmed bluntly at the time that he and Woods “don’t like each other”, told the Daily Mail: “We have not spoken and I don’t really have any plans to contact him. Obviously he is not going to say sorry, which I can understand coming from him. “It wasn’t my fault. I am not the one who should go to him. I don’t care who he is. “It doesn’t matter if it is Tiger Woods or Luke Donald, who is my best friend on tour. If I have done something wrong I will go up and say, ‘Sorry, I hope it is okay and that we can move on’. “But if I am not the one who did the thing then I am not going to go up and say, ‘Sorry for you doing that thing to me’. That’s nonsense.” In other news, Bulgaria, without a player in the world’s top 1,500, has been widely praised after hosting the World Match Play Championship - its first major golf tournament. The $3.85 million event, staged at the picturesque Black Sea resort of Thracian Cliffs near Kavarna last week, broke new ground in the largely untapped golfing market of Eastern Europe.

By Ed Osmond

IN BRIEF

ENGLAND secured the convincing victory over New Zealand they demanded in the first Test at Lord’s but question marks remain over the make-up of their team for the Ashes series against Australia starting in July. The fast bowling of James Anderson and Stuart Broad was largely responsible for the 170-run win over the New Zealanders who more than held their own for three days of the match against a team ranked six places above them. England openers Alastair Cook and Nick Compton failed to score above 32 in their two innings and with the reliable but limited Jonathan Trott at number three, there is a growing feeling the top order may struggle to lay a solid platform and score quickly enough to put opponents under pressure. One solution might be to promote Joe Root to open, the 22-year-old enhancing his burgeoning reputation with scores of 40 and 71 against New Zealand made with a blend of careful defence and ruthless attacking strokes. Opening with Root would also free up a place in the middle order for Kevin Pietersen if the powerful righthander recovers from injury in time to face Australia. Former England opener Geoffrey Boycott believes Compton, despite his two Test centuries in the recent series inNew Zealand, is

One solution might be to promote Joe Root to open, the 22-year-old enhancing his burgeoning reputation with scores of 40 and 71 against New Zealand made with a blend of careful defence and ruthless attacking strokes struggling. “Nick Compton is under pressure for his place because of the ways he got out at Lord’s,” Boycott wrote in the Daily Telegraph. “His strength is patience, concentration, good defence and the ability to bat for long periods and give England the platform for the stroke players later on.” Compton made 16 in the first innings at Lord’s but, frustrated by the accuracy of the New Zealand bowling, he charged down the wicket to spinner Bruce Martin and sliced a catch into the covers. In the second innings Compton was comprehensively bowled by left-armer Neil Wagner. “Nick bats with such in-

tensity, expending so much mental energy and there is a rigidity and stiffness to his batting.” Cook, as the captain and with more than 7,000 Test runs to his name and 24 centuries, is in no danger of being dropped but Boycott thinks he has a weakness against left-arm fast bowlers.

DISMISSED He was dismissed by Trent Boult in both innings at Lord’s, caught by the wicketkeeper and third slip. “Cook has a problem with left-arm over-the-wicket seamers,” Boycott said. “He does not judge the line of what to play and what to leave very well.”

Australia have Mitchell Starc in their squad, a quicker bowler than Boult and one of the best left-arm fast bowlers in the world. “Good footwork is nearly always the key to good batting so he needs to make a bigger stride forward,” Boycott said. “As captain, if the Aussies find a chink in his batting and start getting him out cheaply he will lose confidence. So he needs to sort it out.” Cook was heartened by the form of Anderson and Broad who took 15 wickets between them and bowled New Zealand out for just 68 in their second innings. “Broad has done it on numerous occasions now,” Cook told reporters. “He bowls in the high 80s

and from a great height. With the ball swinging it is very hard. I know as an opening batter that if you challenge off stump as much as he does it is very hard. The second Test starts at Headingley, Leeds on Friday and England may consider playing Tim Bresnan on his home ground in place of Steven Finn, who took four wickets in the first innings at Lord’s but struggled for rhythm. Bresnan’s inclusion would also strengthen the lower order batting which failed miserably at Lord’s, with Broad’s unbeaten 26 in the second innings the only double figure score contributed by numbers 7-11 in the England batting line-up.

Zhang wins world table tennis title for hat-trick

Seven more Al Zarooni horses test positive

Lowe to be reunited with Hamilton at Mercedes

ZHANG Jike sealed a remarkable hat-trick of major titles when he beat fellow Chinese Wang Hao 4-2 in the men’s final of the world championships in Paris. Zhang, who had already beaten Wang in the 2011 world championships final and the Olympic final last year, prevailed 11-7 11-8 6-11 14-12 5-11 11-7 on his first match point. “It was a tough match,” the 25-year-old Zhang told French TV Channel L’Equipe 21 after running towards the stands to hug his parents in a rare display of emotion. It is the fifth time in a row that the men’s singles title was won by a Chinese player since Austrian Werner Schlagerwas crowned in Paris in 2003.

SEVEN further horses trained by banned Mahmood Al Zarooni, including 2012 St Leger winner Encke, have tested positive for the anabolic steroid stanozolol, the British Horseracing Authority said. Godolphin trainer Al Zarooni was handed an eightyear ban by the BHA last month for doping horses with anabolic steroids after 11 tested positive at his stable in Newmarket, England. Al Zarooni, who admitted administering prohibited substances to four others, has appealed against the severity of the ban. The BHA has conducted tests on all Godolphin-owned horses in training in Newmarket.

FORMER McLaren technical director Paddy Lowe will join Mercedes as an executive director on June 3 after agreement was reached between the two Formula One teams, Mercedes said. The Briton will work closely with team principal Ross Brawn, who retains overall responsibility for technical and sporting matters. Lowe, who has been replaced at McLaren by Tim Goss, had been under contract to the Woking-based team until the end of the year. The expected move reunites Lowe and McLaren 2008 world champion Lewis Hamilton.

Sport Wilkinson happy to answer Lions injury call

Pistorius ‘not ready to return’ to track in 2013 ‘Blade Runner’ turns down invitations By Guy Aspin OSCAR Pistorius is not mentally ready to return to competition and will not race again this year as he awaits trial for murder. But the South African’s agent Peet van Zyl confirmed to Press Association Sport the 26-year-old had turned down meeting invitations, indicating he remained an attractive athlete to event organisers. The six-time Paralympic gold medallist was charged with the premeditated murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in February. “There was never any pressure from me or his coach Ampie Louw to return to competition, it’s his decision and it’s his decision not to compete,” Van Zyl said. It means Pistorius will definitely not take part in the IPC World Championships in Lyon in July or the ablebodied World Championships in Moscow the following month. Pistorius, who competed at both the Olympics and Paralympics at London 2012, had his bail conditions relaxed in March to allow him to travel abroad for competitions. But asked if the sprinter was mentally ready to race again, Van Zyl said: “No, of course not.” Coach Louw was quoted

The athlete has been charged with the murder of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp by Eye Witness News in South Africa as saying: “He is nowhere close to being in a position to train. He just does fitness exercises in the morning with his family.” Van Zyl revealed to Press Association Sport that meeting organisers had been in touch to invite Pistorius to their events. He did not reveal where the invitations were from, but said there were “a good number, enough to keep him busy through the year”. Athletics world governing body the IAAF had said Pistorius would have been regarded as “innocent until proven guilty” and “free to

run” were he to achieve the qualifying standard for Moscow, but in truth the chances of that happening given the circumstances were remote. He won a silver medal in the 4x400 metres relay at the last World Championships in South Korea in 2011. Pistorius is next due in court on June 4, with a trial expected to take place before the end of this year. The double amputee claims he shot 29-year-old Ms Steenkamp after mistaking her for an intruder. Pistorius won two gold medals at London 2012 in the 400m and the 4x100m relay, but made just as many headlines for his comments about the length of rival Alan Oliveira’s blades straight after the Brazilian shocked him in the 200m, which were viewed by many as sour grapes. He will now miss out on the year when the Paralympic movement looks to capitalise on the success of the London Games, although any appearance at the IPC World Championships would have undoubtedly overshadowed the event itself. UK Athletics chairman Ed Warner had already ruled out inviting Pistorius to the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games at the Olympic Stadium at the end of July for fear of it becoming a “media circus”.

Oscar Pistorius will definitely not take part in the IPC World Championships in Lyon in July or the able-bodied World Championships in Moscow the following month

Murray to make decision on Paris

The Scot retired injured with a back problem at the Italian Open and may be forced to withdraw from Roland Garros

ANDY Murray says he would be “very surprised” if he is fit for the French Open after retiring injured against Marcel Granollers at the Italian Open. The Briton will make a decision about his participation at Roland Garros today after talking to specialists. Murray endured a miserable 26th birthday as a lower-back problem forced him out of his secondround tie. He looked troubled throughout his match and withdrew after winning a tie-break to square the match at one set all. The second Grand Slam tournament of the year begins at Roland Garros on May 26. “I’d be very surprised if I was playing in Paris,” said Murray. “I need to make a plan as to what I do. I’ll chat with the guys and make a plan, then make a decision on Paris.”

The Scot’s only previous mid-match retirement coincidentally came on his 20th birthday, when he snapped a tendon in his wrist at the 2007 Hamburg Masters. That was the most serious injury Murray has suffered and led to him missing both the French Open and Wimbledon. Murray struggled with a lower-back problem throughout the clay season last year, one match against Jarkko Nieminen during the French Open prompting former Wimbledon champion Virginia Wade to call him a “drama queen”. He had injections before Wimbledon but said the problem returned in Madrid last week and did not improve with rest. The situation became too much after two sets against Granollers on the Rome clay. “Until Madrid, it had been OK but it’s not been perfect for a long period,” added Murray. “You always

go into matches with little niggles and such, but it’s frustrating when for a long period you’re hurting. “It’s been an issue for a while now and I want to make sure it goes away. It’s not enjoyable when you’re playing in pain.” Granollers, the world number 37, took the first set as Murray struggled to find any rhythm and required on-court treatment after the third game of the second set. Murray lost 10 consecutive points following his enforced break for treatment, but the British number one battled on and recovered from 4-1 down to level at 4-4. Granollers broke Murray’s serve in the ninth game but failed to serve out the match in the 10th. Murray levelled the match when Granollers pushed a forehand long, before heading to his chair and informing the umpire he was retiring.

JONNY Wilkinson has said he will do everything possible to be fit enough to answer a Lions injury call should he be needed for the tour of Australia. The 33-year-old was named European Player of the Year on Sunday after helping Toulon win the Heineken Cup. “I’ve been asked if I’ll be an injury replacement. I’ve said ‘quite happily’,” said Wilkinson. “I’m happy to give it all I’ve got. If I can physically front up to being there if there’s an injury then great.” Wilkinson, who kicked 11 points in the 16-15 Heineken Cup win over Clermont on Saturday, was initially offered a place on the tour of Australia by coach Warren Gatland, but the veteran fly-half wanted to concentrate on playing for his club. England’s 2003 World Cup winner said in April his “absolute priority” was with Toulon and club commitments meant he would not be available for the Lions’ opening tour match. Toulon play in the French Top 14 semi-final on Friday, with the final on the same day as the Lions play the Barbarians in Hong Kong on June 1. “I appreciate that everyone needs to be together on the flight and I certainly can’t guarantee that,” said Wilkinson. “Let me get to the end of the season and see if I’m not the one who needs replacing, rather than the one who goes out there. “I can’t guarantee the state I’ll be in. The body is getting to the state where I am trying to stay at this level.” Former Wales captain Jonathan Davies had said taking Wilkinson on the tour would be a “backward step”. But Wilkinson, who retired from England duty in 2011, said: “As a proud sportsman you always disagree with that because you always believe you can add something. “In 2001 (the Lions tour of Australia) there were older guys like Scott Quinnell, Keith Wood, so there is room for everyone.” Coach Warren Gatland had said he would not call on Wilkinson unless the 37-man squad was hit by injuries. “If we picked up an injury on tour then maybe there’s a conversation to be had,” said Gatland. “Jonny’s a good player, but we’ve had the conversation about him.” Gatland also called Australia’s selection for next month’s series predictable. “I thought it was predictable,” the Kiwi said of a squad shorn of the likes of Kurtley Beale, Tatafu Polota Nau, George Smith and David Pocock through illness or injury.

Sport Hummels not eyeing exit from Dortmund

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff kicks a ball as she inaugurates the Arena Pernambuco stadium in Recife ahead of the Confederations Cup next month, a warm-up for the 2014 World Cup tournament in Brazil

Brazil criticises naysayers By Anthony Boadle BRAZILIAN President Dilma Rousseff took a swipe at the naysayers as she yesterday officially inaugurated the last of six stadiums that Brazil will use next month to host a warm-up for the 2014 World Cup tournament. “The pessimists said the stadiums would not be ready in time, but we are showing them today that we can deliver high-quality stadiums,” Rousseff said in a speech in Recife before opening the 46,000-seat Arena Pernambuco outside the northeastern Brazilian city. Rousseff said Brazil is fulfilling its commitments with FIFA, whose secretary general Jerome Valcke last year angered Brazilians by saying the country needed a “kick up the backside” to get World Cup preparations moving. On Saturday, Rousseff kicked the first symbolic ball on the newly-laid pitch of the brand new Mane Garrin-

Stadiums ready for Confederations Cup cha National Stadium in the Brazilian capital of Brasilia, where Brazil will face Japan in the first game of the eightnation Confederations Cup on June 15. At a cost of 1.2 billion reals ($590.1 million), the colonnaded stadium is the most expensive of the 12 that Brazil is building for next year’s 32-nation World Cup, and a prime candidate to become a white elephant in a city with no major football club. Yet some of its 309 toilets were not ready yet and flooded during a test game between two local teams that filled half the 71,000seat stadium. Its big test will come on Sunday, when two of Brazil’s top teams Flamengo and Santos - will fill the venue for the opening of the Brazilian national league. “These six stadiums show

the ability and determination we have building the six remaining stadiums,” Rousseff said. Only two stadiums were completed in time for the December deadline originally set by FIFA, which took over the first batch of stadiums yesterday. FIFA has said it will not budge on the deadline for the second batch of stadiums due by the end of this year. The main problem will be the Sao Paulo stadium where the World Cup is due to kick off in June 2014. Builders threatened to halt construction because of a financing dispute that might throw Brazil’s hosting of the World Cup into disarray and embarrass the government. Major logistical problems during the World Cup could damage Brazil’s image as

an emerging power that is seeking to become a bigger player on the world stage. FIFA is worried that communications and transport infrastructure may not be ready to cope with the estimated 500,000 fans who will descend on 12 Brazilian cities next year for the World Cup. Western governments worry that Brazil is not prepared to counter possible terrorist threats during the massive event and the Olympic games that Rio de Janeiro will host in 2016. Brazilian security forces have gone on a shopping spree for equipment to bolster their defences for the global sports events and the first trip abroad by Pope Francis to Rio de Janeiro in July. The Brazilian police have bought drones to keep an

eye on the areas around the football stadiums during the games. To enhance security for the tournaments, Brazil said it will buy robots that can inspect suspicious packages and detect and diffuse chemical and explosive devices in a $7.2 million contract awarded to Boston-based iRobot Corp. Last week, the first of 32 used anti-aircraft Flakpanzer Gepard tanks bought from the German army to help bolster air defences in the World Cup cities rolled off a ship in Rio. Cranking up security ahead of the Confederations Cup, Brazil launched a massive military operation on Saturday to secure its porous 10,440-mile frontier, much of which is Amazon jungle and rivers. The 25,000 troops and police agents will crack down on drug trafficking and smuggling of arms and illegal migrants, Brazil’s defence ministry said.

Italy’s racism crisis deepens By Mark Meadows

AC Milan’s Kevin-Prince Boateng (left) and Mario Balotelli have both been racially abused by rival supporters

AS Roma and Inter Milan have been fined 50,000 euros after fans chanted racist abuse on the final day of Serie A on Sunday, hours before Fiorentina supporters heckled AC Milan’s black striker Mario Balotelli. The three racism incidents have underlined Italy’s serious problem with discrimination in football, which shows no sign of being eradicated despite renewed efforts from the authorities. Serie A said in a statement yesterday that Roma would also have to close the Curva Sud section of their stadium for one game at the start of next term after the abuse during their clash with Napoli.

The statement said Inter, already fined 50,000 euros for racist chants towards Balotelli in February, had only been punished with the same fine for abuse at their game with Udinese but with a warning over their fans’ future conduct. Balotelli, who made his name at Inter Milan as a teenager and is famous for his idiosyncratic antics on and off the field, has been a long-time target of racist abuse in Italy and moved to England’s Manchester City partly to get away from the hatred. The Italy striker returned to AC Milan in January and has been a big success, scoring a controversial late penalty on Sunday which helped Milan win 2-1 at relegated Siena and take third spot and a Champi-

ons League playoff berth off a furious Fiorentina. As Milan’s team bus passed through Florence on its way back from Siena in the early hours of Monday, a group of Fiorentina fans shouted racist abuse, prompting Balotelli to take to Twitter to complain. Milan’s Kevin-Prince Boateng was praised throughout the game for walking off the pitch when racially abused by fans of Italian lower league side Pro Patria during a friendly in January. But Italian Referee’s Association president Marcello Nicchi said last week that Balotelli would be sent off if he were to leave the field to protest racist chanting. Other Italian officials have distanced themselves from the comments.

BORUSSIA Dortmund defender Mats Hummels insists Saturday’s Champions League final will not be his last game for the club. The 24-year-old, who is fighting to shake off an ankle injury to allow him to face his former club Bayern Munich at Wembley, has been linked with a move to Barcelona and even back to Bayern in the summer. However, he has pledged his future to Dortmund by telling Kicker magazine that he will still be wearing a yellow and black shirt next season. “I’ve not had any contact with Barcelona or any other club,” he said. “I don’t think it’s my duty to dismiss rumours which other people invent. “If there was to be any truth in them, I would say so. If I say that there is nothing behind the speculation, then people should believe me.” When asked whether Saturday will be his last game for Dortmund, Hummels replied: “Of course not.” Hummels joined Dortmund from Bayern in 2008 after making just a single appearance for the Bavarians, in the 5-2 win over Mainz on the final day of the 2006/07 season. His initial loan spell with the Westphalians was made permanent in 2009 and he has been an almost everpresent since. Meanwhile, former Dortmund and Bayern coach Ottmar Hitzfeld believes Jurgen Klopp will be the coach of Bayern at some point in the future. Dortmund coach Klopp has built a strong reputation with the Westphalians, leading them to back-to-back Bundesliga titles and a place in Saturday’s Champions League final. His name is now being linked with every coaching vacancy at Europe’s top clubs, and Hitzfeld, who led both Dortmund and Bayern to Champions League glory, expects Klopp to make the same move he made. “I can imagine Klopp coaching Bayern at some point,” he said. “Bayern nearly always appoint the best German coach. Jurgen Klopp was incredibly successful with Mainz and he is now doing a great job with Dortmund.” Klopp was already close to becoming Bayern’s coach when he left Mainz in 2008. Before he became coach of Dortmund, he had already held talks with Bayern president Uli Hoeness, and reportedly reached an agreement until Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge vetoed the move and instead appointed Jurgen Klinsmann as coach. “I let myself be convinced that we should try the adventure with Klinsmann,” said Hoeness to the Suddeutsche Zeitung newspaper in 2011. “We now know how big a mistake that was.”

‘I’ve grown more in love with England as I’ve gotten older’

Ferguson signs off with LMA honour

Chelsea’s Frank Lampard approaching 100 caps with positive attitude

By Martyn Ziegler

By Matt McGeehan and Simon Stone FRANK Lampard admits he has learned to love England. The Chelsea midfielder is expected to be named captain for at least one of the two forthcoming friendlies against Republic of Ireland and Brazil. With 95 caps to his name, it would be a major surprise if the 34-year-old did not become the Three Lions latest centurion at some point in the autumn, when England will be looking to book their place at the 2014 World Cup. Yet, Lampard accepts international duty has not always been something to relish. “I’ve grown more in love with England as I’ve got older,” Lampard told TalkSPORT. “When I was mid-England career and took a bit of stick, I didn’t enjoy it. “I don’t think you can if you go to Wembley and get a bit of stick and go to World Cups and we weren’t playing well. That’s not me moaning about it, we didn’t perform so it comes with the territory. “As I’ve got older I think my appreciation of playing for my country has risen - it doesn’t go on forever and I really enjoy it at the minute.” Lampard is one of six players in Roy Hodgson’s squad about to feature in the two post-season friendlies between Chelsea and Manchester City now midfielder Jack Rodwell has been called up. With 95 caps to his name, it would be a major surprise if the 34-year-old did not become the Three Lions’ latest centurion at some point in the autumn, when England will be looking to book their place at the 2014 World Cup of his two caps in November 2011, has been added to Hodgson’s squad amid fears Manchester United’s Tom Cleverley, who has been involved in every game this season, will miss out because of a calf injury. The Republic encounter at Wembley on May 29 is particularly significant as it will be their first meeting with

England since 1995, when a friendly in Dublin had to be abandoned due to rioting by the visiting supporters. An anti-IRA song ‘No Surrender’ continues to be sung by England fans and after escaping a charge for the alleged behaviour of their supporters in San Marino recently, the Football Association are desperate to

avoid more controversy. Although he will not specifically mention which songs, Press Association Sport understands coach Roy Hodgson will urge fans not to sing ‘offensive political and religious songs’, both in his programme notes for next Wednesday’s game and also in an email to ticket holders.

‘When I took a bit of stick, I didn’t enjoy it’

Carroll enjoyed Hammer time

Liverpool’s Andy Carroll spent the season on loan at West Ham, where he scored only seven goals

ANDY Carroll maintains he has enjoyed every minute of his season-long loan at West Ham but the long-term future of the England forward remains unclear. Despite only scoring seven goals, the 6ft 3ins striker proved a popular signing and earned a recall to the England squad for the friendlies against the Republic of Ireland and Brazil. However, with parent club Liverpool set to be holding out for £17 million, with Newcastle and Monaco also said to be monitoring the situation, the Irons are set for some tough dealings if they are to secure the striker for next season. Carroll, 24, will also have to consider his own wage demands at any new club, as well as the likely opportunities of regular European football to further push his international career.

Nevertheless, the Gateshead-born forward had nothing but praise for the time spent at the Boleyn Ground. Speaking on the club’s official website, www.whufc. com, Carroll said: “I have enjoyed every minute of being here. “I have just tried to play my best in every match, score goals and keep myself fit once I got back from the injuries I had and then push on from there. “The West Ham fans have been brilliant - they were chanting my name all through the match (against Reading), they never stopped and I thank them for the way they have supported me here from the moment I arrived.” Carroll added: “I have worked hard to get myself back in the England squad, trying to play my

best for West Ham, so I am really pleased about that. I just have to make sure I keep playing well to stay in there. “I have had a great season here at West Ham, really enjoyed being part of a great set of lads in the team, with the staff around us and the fans. “Everyone has been so welcoming to me and I have been over the moon to be here. This is a great club.” Carroll believes West Ham deserve great credit for securing 10th place on their first season back in the top flight. “As a team, we have made a good transition back up to the Premier League,” the England striker said. “It is a tough thing, but the aim from the start was to try and get in that top 10 and that is what we have done.”

SIR Alex Ferguson admitted he was relieved the celebrations to mark his retirement were over as he was named the LMA’s manager of the year for an unprecedented fourth time. The outgoing Manchester United boss picked up the award at a dinner in London and said that he was confident he was leaving the club in good shape. The farewell celebrations culminated in his last match in charge on Sunday, a 5-5 draw at West Brom. Ferguson, who also won the LMA’s Premier League manager of the year award, said: “It has been overwhelming. The club has been fantastic and congratulations to West Brom with the way they handled the day. “In a way I am glad it is all over now - because it has been hard work! “I think (West Brom manager) Steve Clarke should get an award because anyone who scores five against United deserves it.” Ferguson added that he was confident he was leaving United in good hands with David Moyes, who has won the LMA award three times, and with the club’s emphasis on bringing through young players. United also won the inaugural Barclays under-21 Premier League. Ferguson said: “It has always placed a great emphasis on youth long before I came. “Sir Matt Busby started that and took Manchester United into Europe, the first English club to do so. “It’s always been there and I have tried to maintain that though it is more difficult in the present climate - you have to scout abroad now but you are still looking for young people who can do well.” LMA chairman Howard Wilkinson paid tribute to Ferguson, saying: “Finding words to adequately describe the monumental levels of achievement and the indelible legacy Sir Alex Ferguson leaves in the game, is nigh on impossible. “This award adds yet another record to that list, making him the only person to secure the much coveted LMA manager of the year award, for a fourth time.” Cardiff boss Malky Mackay was named the Championship manager of the season after winning the title. Yeovil’s Gary Johnson was named the League One manager of the year and Gillingham’s Martin Allen won the League Two award. England boss Roy Hodgson was elected into the LMA’s 1,000 club for managers who had been in charge of 1,000 games after the body agreed to take overseas and international matches into account.

Psycho drama queen: Bardsley’s girlfriend turns on Di Canio

Infuriated: Tanya Robinson took to Twitter to slam raging Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio after the Italian vowed her partner would never play for the club again after Phil Bardsley was pictured on a casino floor surrounded by £50 notes

PAOLO Di Canio has been labelled a ‘psycho drama queen’ by Phil Bardsley’s partner in the latest sign of mutiny at the club after the Sunderland boss handed out hefty fines to a number of players for breaking club rules. According to reports, the Italian’s strict regime has even seen him ban sugar and tomato ketchup from the canteen at the club’s training ground. It comes at the end of a tumultuous week that has seen seven players disciplined, a 24-minute rant from the manager at his final press conference of the season and the players themselves approaching the PFA over what they believe to be unfair fines. Bardsley’s girlfriend Tanya

Robinson took to Twitter to slam the Black Cats boss after the Italian vowed her partner and team-mate Matthew Kilgallon would never play for the club again. The pair were dropped for the Spurs game after they were both photographed in a casino celebrating after Wigan’s defeat at Arsenal, which guaranteed Sunderland’s Premier League survival. Bardsley was pictured on the floor surrounded by £50 notes and two players are understood to have sought guidance from the PFA about whether they can be fined. Robinson said in a tweet: “He’s not raped or killed any1 (sic) so certain people need to stop being psycho drama queens.”

‘Everyone wants to play for Jose’ Torres excited to work with ‘one of the best’

BARCA TAUNT MOURINHO THE ‘SCOURGE’ OF SPAIN

By Simon Johnson

F

ERNANDO Torres jetted to America for Chelsea’s end-of-season tour admitting he has always dreamed of working under Jose Mourinho. Britain’s Evening Standard newspaper revealed in February that Mourinho would return to his former club this summer and Real Madrid confirmed on Monday night that he is leaving the Bernabeu on June 1. The fact they have parted by ‘mutual consent’ removes the final barrier for Chelsea as they will not have to pay the Spanish club any compensation for the three years left on his contract. Torres (right), who believes he is rediscovering his best form and wants to stay at Chelsea, is thrilled at the prospect of working with Mourinho. “The chance to work with Mourinho is something every player wants to do at least once in their lives,” he said. “He has been at the club before, some of the players have worked with him and know what kind of manager he is. “Obviously we are waiting

Mourinho, 50, joined Real after leading Inter M Milan to the Champions League title in 2010. He agreed to extend his contract with the La Liga c club to June 2016 in May last year. R Real President Florentino Per Perez had hoped Mourinho,

whom he has often referred to as “the best coach in the world”, would help the club win the 10th European crown that has eluded them since 2002 and end the dominant run of arch rivals Barcelona. To help realise his dream, he splashed more than 400 million euros of the club’s money on players, including a world record 94 million euros on forward Cristiano Ronaldo. However, after three seasons Mourinho’s haul of major titles is one La Liga and

one King’s Cup, a hugely disappointing return for the world’s richest club by income. “After the talks with our coach Jose Mourinho we have reached the agreement to end the contractual relationship at the end of this season,” Perez told a news conference at Real’s Bernabeu stadium after a board meeting. “Both the club and the coach agree that it is the right moment to end this relationship,” the construction magnate said.

BARCELONA vice-president Carles Vilarrubi welcomed the news that Jose Mourinho is leaving Real Madrid, describing the Portuguese as a ‘scourge’ on Spanish football. Mourinho has had several high-profile run-ins with Madrid’s arch rivals Barca during his three-year spell at the Bernabeu. He poked Tito Vilanova, now in charge of Barcelona, in the eye during a Spanish Supercopa match and claimed UEFA favoured the Catalan club following an ill-tempered Champions League semifinal. And Vilarrubi is glad to see the back of the 50-yearold. He told Catalunya Radio: “Now I can say it, Mourinho has been a scourge. “Seeing him leave is a positive for Spanish football because he had created a negative atmosphere.”
