HE ECONOMIC crisis could “open up” opportunities to end the frozen conflict on the island, said US Secretary of State John Kerry yesterday, adding that hydrocarbon prospects in Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ) could be a part of that solution. Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides, in Washington to meet his American counterpart, countered that the three issues - economic crisis, gas and the Cyprus problem - were separate issues that could, however, be developed in parallel. Standing next to the Cypriot minister in a brief address to the press before their 50-minute meeting, Kerry acknowledged that Cyprus was struggling with “very, very deep economic challenges” that required “difficult choices”. The top American diplomat described Cyprus as “a very good friend of the United States”, adding that the US wanted to be helpful “in ways that we can be”. Kerry said he looked forward to working with Kasoulides and President Nicos Anastasiades, along with others, “to try to move Cyprus forward on one of the world’s fro-

zen conflicts”. The Secretary of State said he has already spoken with Turkey’s Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan and Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, as well as with the Greek Foreign Minister and Cypriot President about finding ways to solve the decades-old dispute. “The United States supports a bizonal, bicommunal federation. We would like to see us unfreeze this conflict and be able to move to a resolution.” He added: “I would hope that rather than preventing people from moving forward, the economic crisis in fact opens up opportunities. And needless to say, there are important possibilities of exploration off the coast of Cyprus with its economic zone, and that may even be able to be a part of a solution.” For his part, Kasoulides noted Kerry’s “very keen interest” in the eastern Mediterranean, which he has already visited three times since his appointment. The Cypriot minister said he wanted to discuss Cyprus not in isolation but as part of the wider picture in the region. “We want to be and play the role of stability in this

Home Iranian ambassador to Cyprus recalled

US keen to aid in a Cyprus solution Washington sees gas as an incentive to move forward (continued from front page) region and work with all the neighbours and with the United States,” he said. Solving the “open wound” of the Cyprus problem remains the government’s “first and foremost desire”. However, it wants to deal with peace efforts, as well as the issues of the economy and natural gas as three separate issues. If one reinforces the other, it’s through these parallel three roles, he added. According to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), following the meeting, diplomatic sources said Kerry showed understanding to the Cypriot desire to keep the peace process, economic crisis and exploitation of energy resources as separate issues. At the same time, the US reportedly considers the natural gas issue could act as an incentive for a solution. The same sources said Kerry heard with interest Kasoulides’ proposals for the return of the fenced off part of Famagusta to its lawful inhabitants as a confidence-building measure (CBM). The US diplomat will have the chance to sound out Erdogan and Davutoglu on the proposal when they visit Washington next week. Kerry also offered US support regarding the economic crisis, to which Kasoulides suggested a review of the law on double taxation, which could encourage more US companies to operate in Cyprus.

“It was a very interesting discussion,” said Kasoulides, noting Kerry’s indepth knowledge on what is happening in Cyprus, and the region in general. “He has some ideas on how the US could help in the efforts. He accepted our suggestions, which he will gladly explore and we will keep in touch to see how we can continue with a view certainly always for a solution of the Cyprus problem, in a way which is fair and just towards Cyprus and the Cypriots,” said the Cypriot minister. Asked if Kerry linked the crisis to a solution, Kasoulides replied: “As you heard him say, he has raised three issues. From the moment we have explained these three issues are not dependent on each other but can reinforce these three separate paths, I believe things are in the right perspective.” Asked if Kerry raised the issue of putting a stop to hydrocarbon explorations in Cyprus’ EEZ, he replied: “Not at all, on the contrary.” Before his Washington visit, Kasoulides also met with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in New York. According to Kasouildes, Ban agreed to hold back the resumption of peace talks until the autumn, giving time for the new government to get a grip on the economic crisis enveloping Cyprus right now. The government has been pushing with one voice

Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides speaks to the press in Washington for Turkey to take a massive step towards building trust between the opposing sides by opening up Famagusta in exchange for direct trade between the EU and the Turkish Cypriots and the unblocking of some frozen chapters in Turkey’s EU accession negotiations. Kasoulides said the return of the fenced off part of Famagusta to its lawful inhabitants would be a “test of Turkey’s real intentions in Cyprus”. Government spokesman Christos Stylianides yesterday pointed out the need to restore confidence and trust between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots before the resumption of talks. Speaking to a Paralimni audience on

Thursday evening, Anastasiades said a Cyprus solution remained a top priority. He called on Turkey to confirm with actions its stated desire for a solution: “For this reason, we believe that a significant step towards this would be the return of Famagusta to its rightful inhabitants and not through declarations or empty threats.” During his US tour, the Cypriot minister also met with National Security Advisor to Joe Biden, Jake Sullivan, the AmericanIsraeli Lobby, the Hellenic Caucus, the House Foreign Affairs Committee, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee as well as with the Israeli Ambassador in Washington. Addressing a gathering at

the Brookings Institution in Washington, the minister said Cyprus could cooperate both with Israel and with Lebanon and Egypt in the field of energy. He noted that Cyprus is the only predictable neighbour of Israel, adding that a bad solution of the Cyprus problem would change that predictability, since it would allow Turkey to meddle in Cyprus’ internal affairs. Meanwhile, UN spokesman Michel Bonnardeaux yesterday confirmed that UN Special Adviser Alexander Downer will host a dinner for the two leaders and their spouses on May 29 at the Chief of Mission’s residence in the United Nations Protected Area in Nicosia.

IRAN has recalled its ambassador to Cyprus for consultations after an Iranian national was recently extradited from the island to the United States on suspicion of violating UN arms sanctions. Yesterday, the foreign ministry said the extradition of an Iranian citizen to the US did not constitute a hostile act against the Republic of Iran and did not influence the bilateral relations. The ministry said it has been formally briefed by the Iranian government on its decision to recall its ambassador to Cyprus, following the recent extradition of an Iranian citizen from the island to the United States on suspicion of violating UN arms sanctions. The ministry underlined that Cyprus acted in compliance with its international obligations and the state of law. It also expresses the hope that the bilateral relations and cooperation would be safeguarded for the benefit of the people of the two countries. The Iranian suspect in question was ordered to be extradited to the United States by a court after exhaustion of all domestic legal remedies in Cyprus about two weeks ago, the ministry said. Speaking in Washington on Thursday, Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides referred to the situation saying: “Only today ... I received word from Nicosia that Iran has decided to recall its ambassador there for consultations. Why? Because an Iranian citizen was apprehended for trying to buy, to contravene the arms embargo against Iran.” A diplomatic source in Nicosia told Reuters the nature of the alleged offence was “to buy and have delivered in Iran goods and material falling under the sanctions regime,” but would not go into any more detail. Kasoulides, speaking to an audience at the Brookings Institution, later told Reuters Iran had attempted to apply political pressure on Nicosia to avert extradition. “In Cyprus in principle we follow the decision of the court.”

CY unions accept rescue deal By George Psyllides FACED with the prospect of closing down, Cyprus Airways (CY) workers yesterday approved a rescue deal that called for shedding around half its current personnel. “Not approving this deal means closure of the company,” the assembled workers belonging to the PEO and SEK trade unions were told by their representatives. The deal provided for 490 staff to be made redundant, wage cuts, and the reduc-

Half of national carrier’s workers will go tion of the airline’s fleet by four aircraft to six. “Approving this deal is a one-way street” SEK representative Andreas Pierides said. “There is no other way.” Workers were given a week to state whether they wanted to leave voluntarily so as to avoid layoffs. Their departure will take place in two stages since the crews of two aircraft – beyond those of the six planes

that will remain in operation – will stay on until the end of the summer. “(The workers) expect the state to support Cyprus Airways by implementing the restructuring plan and ensuring that the company will continue to operate and the remaining workers will have the certainty that their company has prospects,” said Antonis Neofytou, representative of PEO. CY pilots

however, yesterday complained that the company’s management was delaying implementation of the restructuring plan, jeopardising the rescue effort. Their union, PASYPI, questioned why foreign experts had not yet been tasked with implementing the scheme – as it had been agreed by all involved. “For the last time, PASYPI is calling on the government

to intervene and force the management to hand over the authority of implementing the restructuring plan to the foreign experts who have the knowledge and experience to successfully see it through,” PASYPI said. Meanwhile Middle East Airlines said they were no longer interested in investing in CY, according to Communications Minister Tasos Mitsopoulos. The minister added that other investors were exploring the possibility of investing in the national carrier.

Municipality angered by state’s indifference to flooding woes NICOSIA Municipality yesterday blamed the government for the havoc caused on the roads after the flash thunderstorm in the capital on Thursday. Parts of the city were hit with a second such downpour yesterday but for a briefer period. In a statement, the municipality said the government had acted with indifference and irresponsibility. The thunderstorm lasted almost two hours flooding dozens of basements and trapping motorists in their cars, a scene that has been replayed islandwide for decades during heavy rains. According to the municipality the bridge on Ammochostos Road in the SOPAZ area had overflowed again, shops on Larnaca and Kennedy Avenues flooded while Constanti-

noupoleos Street in Kaimakli turned into a lake. “Residents of the area are completely within their rights to be outraged because for years they have been warning the relevant government departments of the situation and they have not taken any action,” the statement said. The fact that municipality crews were on scene to help the owners of flooded shops is not a proper solution to the problem, according to the statement. “A country which wants to be labelled as European, cannot be taken hostage by adverse weather conditions,” the statement concluded. The municipality called on the relevant departments and the ministries to assume their responsibilities.

‘Local authorities need to be more productive’ By Poly Pantelides THE GOVERNMENT and the municipalities’ unions are committed to restructuring local government in order to increase individual municipalities’ autonomy, but are not right now willing to reduce the number of municipalities, they said yesterday. Even before the extent of the banking crisis became evident in March, the island’s 39 municipalities, particularly the 30 in government-controlled areas, have been warning that budget cuts were impacting their ability to meet their obligations. Local authorities have been exempt from forced losses in the Bank of Cyprus as well as former Laiki Bank that is winding down as part of a bailout package for Cyprus, but with the state allocating a smaller budget, they need to learn to do more with less. “Cyprus’ basic problem, especially the state machine’s, is that it is overgrown… overstaffed and offering services with low productivity and efficiency,” the municipalities’ union head and Famagusta mayor Alexis Galanos, told his peers yesterday during an extraordinary general meeting. The problem with municipalities is productivity, linked with a high number of employees. The quality of services also needs to be addressed in the framework of forming strong local authorities, he said. But decisions to merge municipalities have to be taken on a political level, involving the president and the parties backing mayors, Galanos said adding that compared with “several other European countries” such as France, Luxembourg and Croatia, Cyprus comparatively had fewer municipalities per capita. Six new local authorities were created in the past few years adding more expenses to the state through the legal obligations to employ certain caytegories of employee. Overall, some 75 per cent of the municipalities’ budgets goes on salaries and pensions.

National Economic Council gets down to work Dust has settled and next steps are being discussed By Stefanos Evripidou PRESIDENT NICOS Anastasiades yesterday met with his National Economic Council for the first time yesterday, one month after its appointment, paving the way for the top advisory body to get to work on restoring trust in the Cyprus economy. Joined by Finance Minister Harris Georgiades, Anastasiades had a three-hour meeting with the ten-member body, headed by Nobel prize winner Christopher Pissarides. Sources told the Cyprus Mail last night that the council agreed with the president to first focus its expertise on three main issues: the banking system, with particular emphasis on how to ensure the Bank of Cyprus’ survival, which remains in a critical condition; all the implications involving the euro currency, and the government’s policy for economic growth. One source said the discussion was “wide and varied” and “very constructive”. Everyone was given a chance to speak in an open manner while the government appeared “very receptive” to various ideas. Anastasiades had a chance to explain to the economists what exactly happened during the fateful Eurogroup meeting in March when Cypriot depositors woke up to the news that the troika had taken the unprecedented decision to impose a haircut on depositors of the island’s two largest and most systemic banks. Another source said, now the dust has started to settle after the Eurogroup bombshell, it appeared the government was ready to take serious steps to rectify

the woeful conditions of the Cyprus economy. Speaking after the meeting at the Presidential Palace, Pissarides said the meeting focused on clarifying the framework within which the council will operate and liaise with the president and minister. “We are satisfied with the decisions taken,” he said. The president discussed with the team of experts the problems facing the Cypriot economy that need further study. “Our aim is to make more detailed studies, we are all technocrats, our reports will be based on data and evidence to help those in power take decisions on the economy,” he said. The Nobel prize winner said the council will cover all areas of the economy, focusing initially on the banking system, energy sector, fiscal policy, and growth programmes. “The priority is to have an environment conducive to investments. The only thing that can limit unemployment is economic growth, and the competiveness of the Cypriot economy and the creation of new jobs,” said Pissarides. Unemployment was “the most serious problem”, he said, adding that the shortterm situation was not good. “The austerity measures imposed on us do not help deal with unemployment and the various social benefits simply limit the costs of unemployment to families. Without economic growth, we cannot constrain it. I do not believe, however, that we will reach the levels of Spain and Greece.” The best way to return to economic growth is by returning confidence in the Cyprus economy. To do that,

Finance Minister Harris Georgiades (left) looks at some documents before the meeting starts investors need to feel they can get a return on investments. “Now, there is uncertainty in the banking system, which needs to be eliminated,” he said. Vice-chair of the council, Stavros Zenios, told the Cyprus Mail that they had a long general discussion last night, clarifying administrative issues and the main areas of focus of the council. “It was very positive and there is lot’s of good chemistry within the council. We are a committee of experts, not politicians. And we see eye-to-eye with the government on what is expected of us: to provide independent, informed expert opinion,” he said. According to sources, the council will come up with a study within weeks on how to help the ailing Bank of Cyprus. As a result of the Eurogroup decision, the island’s largest bank was lumped with the debts and assets of the now wound down Laiki Bank, including a €9 billion-plus debt to the European Central Bank, and all of Laiki’s staff. On Thursday, Georgiades criticised the Central Bank of Cyprus for not moving fast enough on the restructuring of the Bank of Cyprus, which continues to remain leaderless, having been run the past few weeks by an appointed administrator who will stay in charge until a CEO is appointed.

Four banks exempted from capital controls THE FINANCE ministry yesterday issued decree, exempting four credit institutions operating in Cyprus from the capital restrictions imposed on Cypriot banks. These institutions are BLOM Bank SAL, Lebanon and Gulf Bank SAL, OJSC Promsvyazbank which operate as branches in Cyprus and the VTB`s subsidiary

Russian Commercial Bank (Cyprus) Ltd. It says however that these credit institutions are prohibited from servicing domestic customers that maintain accounts with their head office or soliciting and obtaining new business from domestic customers or opening new accounts for domestic customers.

Home Fotiou shocked at number of needy in Larnaca

CYPRUS TODAY Soldier killed in car accident

By Peter Stevenson DEFENCE Minister Fotis Fotiou expressed his shock at the hundreds of people queuing up to get aid from the Larnaca community market, after his visit there yesterday. The minister said he expected plans to give surplus ready-meals from army camps around the island to needy families to come into effect very soon. “I am shocked at the number of people here at the market but I am truly pleased by the work done by the Mayor, the town council, volunteers and everyone else who has contributed which is truly deserving of congratulations,” Fotiou said. He also thanked the Red Cross for the work they were doing for the needy on the island. “We must all contribute to this work so we can give hope to the people that come here every day who need our help,” he added. The minister went on to say that the message which needed to be sent out was that Cy-

Defence Minister Fotis Fotiou (left) on a visit to the Larnaca community market yesterday with surplus army food prus would survive. “We need to dig-in, to repeat the miracle recovery we achieved in 1974 and we must all work hard together to achieve what the people need, the rebuilding of our economy in order to give new hope,” he said. Fotiou handed over surplus army food to Larnaca Mayor, Andreas Louroudjiadis and representatives from the Red Cross.

Larnaca’s Mayor expressed his pleasure at the initiative taken by members of the National Guard to donate food which had not been consumed at army camps. “I would like to wholeheartedly thank the defence minister for taking the initiative but also for showing his sensitivity as these actions come from our children, the children who are serving in the

National Guard which demonstrates that with solidarity, we can stand together side by side, as a people and community,” Louroudjiadis said. Head of the Red Cross in Famagusta, Kika Konia, also thanked Fotiou for the “concern and sensitivity” he had shown. “We would like to reassure people that with this donation we will try to support

as many families as possible during these difficult times,” she said. Head of the Red Cross in Larnaca, Aliki Neocleous also thanked the minister, adding that the Red Cross helped out around 100 families by giving free breakfasts to students at two secondary schools in Larnaca. “Any donations of money or food are always welcome,” she said.

Cypriot MEP says unified asylum policy imperative By Maria Gregoriou THE NEED for refugees to know their rights, and the bitterness of some Cypriots who feel they are losing their jobs to non-Europeans were raised yesterday during the presentation of a draft EU law to improve asylum procedures, which will be put to a plenary vote in June, The draft law was agreed on April 24 and is part of five acts forming the backbone of the common European Asylum System. The five acts are the Early Warning System which is replacing the Dublin Regu-

Triantaphyllides: different implementation of rules in member states has worsened situation lation, and establishes the criteria for determining which state is responsible for examining an asylum seeker’s application. They also include the reception condition direction, which refers to clothing, food or medical aid offered to refugees, the asylum procedures directive, which deals with the legal side of asylum seekers’ applications, the qualification directive, which states what

criteria is needed to class someone as a refugee, and the EURODAC system, which is the European fingerprint database for identifying asylum seekers over 14 years old. “The question of a common asylum system is not new. It has been on the table since 1999. The level of protection at the EU level is not sufficient. The different implementation of asylum legislation in member states has worsened the situation,” AKEL MEP Kyriacos Triantaphyllides said during yesterday’s briefing. “It took us 14 years to come this far and agree on some terms. Sometimes you have to take a few steps back in order to take steps forward in the future. What is important is that the EU does what it says it will do in practice, not just have laws and promises written down on paper,” Triantaphyllides said. A Cypriot citizen at the briefing, Andreas Agiotis, 72, blamed the government for the current economic situation in Cyprus saying: “Why should people from non-European countries be taking all our jobs? I am not a racist but Cypriots will be forced to leave their own country soon if this situation continues the way it is going.”

Triantaphyllides replied by saying that he understood the emotions that the crisis was causing but he didn’t think that jobs were being taken up by refugees. Asylum seekers are only allowed to work in the agricultural sectors. Kyriacos Pierides, a Cypriot reporter said that for three years he and others had been trying to establish an organisation to raise awareness about refugee issues in Cyprus. “We want educators to help us in this quest, to teach children about refugee rights and how they are treated in schools,” he said.

STRUGGLES Pierides said the economic crisis had drowned the Cypriot people in their own problems and was not allowing them to see beyond their own fences. “We believe that building a network between refugees, giving them access to talk about their experiences and to hear about others struggles will help them cope. What we are trying to do for the refugees is no different from what Cyprus is trying to do for needy Cypriots who are now on the verge of poverty,” he added. William Dodoro, a member

of the Association of Recognised Refugees in Cyprus said that refugees in Cyprus were currently facing many difficulties and most of them did not know where and how to go to ask about their rights. “Refugees come together to share their problems. Some of these problems may not be known to the people who have power to change things. This is why we set up our association, to share our problems and hopefully one of us will know how some difficulties can be overcome or know who to address for help. We would also like to contact NGOs who are willing to help refugees,” he said. A member of the Palestinian community in Cyprus, Belal Dufesh, commented on how refugees were forced to stay in Cyprus even though they want to leave. “Last year 22 refugees left Cyprus and they are still lost at sea. No one is telling us what happened to them and no one wonders what made these people put their lives at risk to leave the country,” he said. “Cyprus is in a difficult situation right now and it is looking for someone to point a finger at and place the blame. As we are the weaker population, we are the ones they blame,” Dufesh said. Triantaphyllides said however that the Cypriot authorities were trying to utilise all the measures they have available to them to help refugees leave, but it was not an easy process.

AN 18-YEAR-OLD national guardsman, Andreas Aresti was killed yesterday in Paphos when the car he was a passenger in struck a mound and flipped over, police said. According to reports, the driver Demetris Andreou, also 18, lost control of the vehicle on the Kalepia to Polemi road in the Paphos district at around 4.45am yesterday, swerving left and right before hitting a mound and flipping over. The two 18-year-olds were taken to Paphos General Hospital where Aresti, who was not wearing a seat-belt, was pronounced dead on arrival. The driver, who was wearing his seat-belt at the time was only slightly injured but was kept in hospital for observation. Paphos police spokesman Nicos Tsiappis said investigations showed that Aresti’s death was most likely due to the car’s high speed but also that the 18-year-old was not wearing his seat-belt.

Prepared for evacuations THE GOVERNMENT has assessed its preparedness to assist in the evacuation of European and thirdcountry citizens from Syria if necessary. At a meeting, called by the ministry of communications and works at Larnaca port, officials evaluated the various plans and procedures to be used. Minister Tasos Mitsopoulos said an inspection has taken place to evaluate the infrastructure at the port should Cyprus need to provide assistance. He recalled that in 2006, a total of 65.000 European and third countries nationals fled Lebanon to Cypriot ports. The Minister said Cyprus had drawn experience from this and had set up a National Strategic Plan, which will be followed in case of an urgent need to assist in the evacuation of citizens from Syria.

Nowhere to turn for Laiki depositors Association formed to reclaim ‘stolen money’ but legal steps are delaying urgent restructuring of Bank of Cyprus By Poly Pantelides A NEW association is on a mission to reclaim the money they say was stolen from them as part of a harsh bailout for Cyprus. Its members are the depositors of Laiki or Popular Bank, which was the island’s second biggest bank that is being wound down as part of the island’s €10 billion bailout agreement. Uninsured deposits – those over €100,000 - are nominally still there, but the depositors will have no access to them for years and then only expect to receive part of their money back, depending on how much of the bank’s assets are recovered in the winding down process. “Laiki Bank Depositors Association, SYKALA, was founded in order to reclaim the money which was stolen as a result of the profoundly illegal actions of those who decided to steal it,” the association’s website sykala.org says in Greek, English and Russian.

In about a month, the association has accumulated more than 1,500 members from at least seven countries, said SYKALA’s head, Adonis Papaconstantinou. Some of the members were among the 53 who have already lodged appeals at the Supreme Court against the March 25 decision by the eurozone’s finance ministers, the Eurogroup, to shut down Laiki and restructure the Bank of Cyprus (BoC), whose uninsured depositors would suffer a loss on their savings that may ultimately reach 60 per cent. They will receive equity in return. The move was forced on Cyprus that is looking to get €10 billion from the EU and the International Monetary Fund, over half of its yearly economic output. But for SYKALA and many of its members, it was nothing short of theft. SYKALA met with the finance minister this week as part of an overall plan to exert political pressure, come up with financial proposals, raise awareness and launch legal procedures.

Papaconstantinou said that they were waiting to see how the Supreme Court applications panned out before proceeding but were prepared to take other legal action via civil suits or on a European level. The association believes they could win despite Laiki being insolvent and state being close to bankruptcy. “Definitely something will happen either via collaboration or by force,” said Papaconstantinou referring to hopes that legal action could validate the wrongness of the Eurogroup decision. Speaking to the Cyprus Mail on condition of anonymity, one depositor said he joined the association because he did not know where else to turn. “To be honest, I don’t have high hopes. The state has no money so who is going to pay it back?” he said. The 50-yearold father of two said that the association was at least trying to take action. With his funds locked up or lost he is not sure if he will be able to pay his children’s school fees. His children do

not speak good enough Greek to go to a state school and he is now angry with himself for deciding to return to Cyprus. But he is also not sure if suing the state or any other entity to get his money back “is correct”. “Say (we) win, not that I expect it. The state will go bankrupt if forced to pay,” he said. The numerous lawsuits filed by affected depositors of both lenders have so far delayed the BoC restructuring process, which involves absorbing certain Laiki assets. The suits have succeeded in freezing some €17 million in Laiki and €460 million in BoC, holding up the process. The government is keen to see the BoC restructure through as soon as possible but it recognises the legal obstacles. There are also a couple of technical matters that needed to be dealt with, like transferring more assets from Laiki and amending the structure and characteristics of its share capital to make it compatible with international banking accords.

Abu Qatada to leave Britain voluntarily ABU Qatada yesterday vowed to return voluntarily to Jordan in a dramatic breakthrough that could end the government’s eight year battle to deport him. The extremist cleric’s pledge, which was revealed at a court hearing in London, follows the signing of a new deportation treaty between Britain and Jordan, his homeland, where he is wanted on terrorism charges. The treaty bars use of evidence obtained by torture in any future trial of Qatada and was signed by Home Secretary Theresa May in March in a bid to secure the radical preacher’s removal at last. That prospect had still seemed remote until, in a startling intervention today, Qatada’s lawyer Edward Fitzgerald, QC, told the Special Immigration Appeals Commission hearing that the cleric, also known as Abu Othman, would go if Jordan’s parliament ratifies the treaty. “I am authorised to say on behalf of Mr Othman that, if and when that treaty is ratified by the Jordanian parliament, he

will voluntarily return to Jordan,” Fitzgerald told the court. The pledge raises the prospect of a major victory for May, who has repeatedly vowed to secure Qatada’s deportation, but came under heavy political fire for her previous failures to achieve her aim. She signed the new treaty during a secret visit to Jordan in a bid to meet the requirements of early rulings by British and European judges that Qatada could not be deported because of the risk that evidence obtained by torture would be used against him. The treaty gives a guarantee that this will not happen and was announced last month in the Commons by the Home Secretary as a new way of securing Qatada’s removal. Yesterday’s development, which suggests May’s confidence will be vindicated, came as separate revelations were made in the court that 17 unauthorised mobile phones, as well as prohibited computer memory cards and CDs, had

been found in Qatada’s house. The discoveries, disclosed at yesterday’s hearing by the judge Mr Justice Irwin, were made in a police raid on Qatada’s London home in March. They saw him returned to custody for breaching his highly-restrictive bail conditions. The cleric’s lawyers yesterday argued that, despite the finds, Qatada should be freed again on bail because he had been incarcerated without trial for seven years and five months and that such detention was “too long” regardless of the threat he posed. Fitzgerald told the court that Qatada was willing to submit to a 24-hour curfew if granted bail because he wanted to spend time with his family before returning to Jordan. But Mr Justice Irwin refused, saying Qatada had yet to explain his bail breaches. He said the point of his bail restrictions, which include a ban on mobile and computer use, was to prevent him spreading extremist views — but he had been defying those curbs.

Former archbishop denies cover-up A FORMER Archbishop of York has denied covering up allegations that a senior Church of England clergyman sexually abused choirboys. The Very Rev Robert Waddington, a former Dean of Manchester Cathedral, who died from cancer in 2007, is said to have groomed and abused a chorister in Manchester in the 1980s, The Times reported. He is also said to have targeted a pupil at a boarding school in Queensland, Australia, of which he was the headmaster in the 1960s. Lord Hope of Thornes, who was Archbishop of York from 1995 to 2005, was informed of the two claims in 1999 and 2003, the newspaper said. He spoke to Waddington about the allegations and then banned him from taking church services, but he did not pass on the claims to the police, it added. Lord Hope wrote to the North Queensland Diocese in 1999 and said Waddington was “deeply sorry for anything he may have done to offend” and that the clergyman offered “an unreserved apology”. Lord Hope added Waddington had made it clear “there is no question of any such behaviour occurring again” and that he was a “sad and despondent person” having had cancer treatment. Australian church authorities later paid £50,000 compensation to the former choirboy, Bim Atkinson, 58, - who has waived his anonymity - but made no admission of liability. In 2003, the Diocese of Manchester was made aware of a complaint of sex abuse against Waddington from the family of a former chorister at Manchester Cathedral. Excerpts from the diocese’s child protection report at the time showed that it was aware of the North Queensland case and contained advice that “little could be done” until the Manchester abuse victim officially reported the matter. Lord Hope said he had followed the Church’s child protection protocol at the time.

Police denial of Savile protection ‘doesn’t add up’ Victims’ lawyer says report unconvincing By Dave Higgens

The WYP report said that 68 of Jimmy Savile’s victims have now come forward in the force area. None had come forward in the BBC celebrity’s lifetime

A LAWYER for victims of Jimmy Savile has said that a report which concluded there is no evidence he was protected by police officers “doesn’t add up”. The West Yorkshire Police (WYP) report, published yesterday, examined the history of the DJ and TV presenter’s relationship with the force, including how officers attended his wellknown Friday Morning Club at his Leeds flat. But the report concluded: “There is no evidence that he was protected from arrest or prosecution for any offences as a result of his relationship with WYP, or individual friendships with officers.” But Alan Collins, who represents 40 victims of the disgraced broadcaster, pointed out: “Savile was able to run rings around the police for decades. He used police officers.” Collins told ITV’s Daybreak: “”He was engrained with them, dovetailed with them. “The report begs a lot more questions. It provides some

answers, but the report reveals memories that are not as sharp as perhaps they ought to be, ‘can’t remember’, documents that can’t seem to be located. “It doesn’t add up.” The report said that 68 of Savile’s victims have now come forward in the force area. None had come forward in his lifetime. The youngest of these was five years old at the time and eight others were aged nine or under.

‘EVIDENCE LACKING’ The report said: “No evidence has been found to conclude that there was any impropriety or misconduct in relation to the Friday Morning Club.” The report also examined the way in which WYP used Savile’s celebrity status to front a range of campaigns and appeals. It concluded: “The review team have concerns regarding the absence of a process to secure Savile’s services for some of these events and also the over-reliance on personal friendships that developed between Savile and some officers over a

number of years to secure that support.” The report said that it was “of greater concern” that the force continued to used Savile as part of crime prevention campaigns, even after it had received a request from Surrey Police in 2007 to check what records were held on the broadcaster as part of its investigation into abuse at Duncroft School. The report said: “Although rumours did exist of previous investigations taking place into allegations made against Savile, when these were explored they were found to be without any foundation.” Despite numerous interviews, system searches and inquiries with other agencies, the review team found no evidence of any previous allegations being made to West Yorkshire Police against Savile. Nevertheless, it said: “The force does recognise that some people may have difficulty in reconciling this fact; indeed WYP has difficulty in reconciling this as, since October 2012, 68 victims have come forward to report Savile’s abuse in the West Yorkshire area.”

Prince Harry returns to US for first time since Vegas scandal PRINCE Harry yesterday said his mother Diana, Princess of Wales, would be “proud” of his work when he gave the first speech of his US tour. Harry, 28, looked moved as he told how he had followed her mission to rid the world of landmines. In a powerful speech he spoke of “people who live in countries blighted by land mines” for whom there could be “no return to normality”. At a champagne reception in Washington DC promoting the HALO Trust, the anti-landmine charity he supports, Harry said: “This evening gives me great personal pleasure. My

mother, who believed passionately in this cause, would be proud of my association with HALO.” Harry, who is on his first trip to the US since the embarrassing Las Vegas naked-picture scandal, was greeted by screaming girls as he arrived on Capitol Hill. Later he received a glowing tribute from First Lady Michelle Obama when he made a surprise visit to the White House. He got a standing ovation and cheers from US servicewomen and their children at the tea party when she introduced him.

In his last event of the day, Harry who arrived on a commercial flight with a small entourage of five aides - entertained US policy-makers and wealthy donors at a British embassy reception. Harry’s mother courted controversy over her anti-landmine campaign shortly before she died. She was accused of dragging the royal family into politics, which she rebuffed by saying: “I’m a humanitarian.” The seven-day visit is Harry’s first to the US since he caused outrage by being photographed naked during a weekend break in Las Vegas last year.

Britain BRITAIN TODAY Libya embassy staff pulled THE Foreign Office has temporarily withdrawn some staff from the British Embassy in Libya in response to the “ongoing political uncertainty” in the country. But the mission in Tripoli remains “open as usual”, including for consular and visa services, a Foreign Office spokesman said. The decision to withdraw some staff on security grounds follows armed groups disrupting access to a number of government ministries in Tripoli. A Foreign Office spokesman said: “Given the security implications of the ongoing political uncertainty, the British Embassy is temporarily withdrawing a small number of staff, mainly those who work in support of government ministries which have been affected by recent developments.”

‘Relax visa rules’ THERE should be as few visa restrictions as possible for overseas visitors who come to the UK for business or as tourists, Vince Cable said yesterday. The Business Secretary said the UK should also uphold the principle of the EU, allowing the free movement of workers between countries. Cable claimed a fall in students visiting the UK from overseas should be seen as a problem not as an achievement, adding that talk of cutting net migration was “misleading and unhelpful”. There was also a “prejudice” beneath the debate about immigration numbers, he said, as he opened a debate in the House of Commons on the Queen’s Speech. But Cable acknowledged there was a need for legislation to ensure only those who paid into the system were allowed to benefit from the state.

Teenage rapist gets 12 years A TEENAGER who raped and robbed a 15-year-old girl in a prolonged and terrifying ordeal has been jailed for 12 years. Abdul Miah, 19, had been drinking vodka and taking cocaine on the night he approached the girl and held a knife to her throat. He led her into a secluded area and repeatedly raped her before telling her she would always be known as the girl who was raped. The attack took place on December 18 of last year as the victim was walking home from a youth club in Elswick, Newcastle.

EU exit would not be as dire as feared - Johnson London mayor says Britain must be ready to walk away if Brussels renegotiation fails By Andrew Woodcock U.K. withdrawal from the European Union would not be as “cataclysmic” for British jobs as supporters of membership claim, London Mayor Boris Johnson claimed yesterday. Johnson was speaking amid growing pressure on David Cameron over Europe, with Tory grandees like Lord Lawson and Michael Portillo advocating withdrawal and backbenchers hoping to force a Commons vote next week in protest at the Prime Minister’s failure to table legislation to pave the way for a referendum. The Mayor yesterday said he did not back Lord Lawson’s call for the UK to quit the EU, but said that Britain must be ready to leave if

Cameron’s plan to renegotiate its membership following the 2015 general election does not bear fruit. Johnson told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “My position is that I think the Prime Minister is completely right. What we need to do is to say to our friends and partners ‘Listen chums, this thing isn’t working for either of us. Your eurozone is causing all sorts of misery, plus the on-costs, the non-wage costs, of the way the EU has been running and has legislated and regulated over the last 20 to 30 years are making the whole area completely uncompetitive. We need a renegotiation. We need a look at the way the thing is managed’. “We should be prepared to pull out. That goes without saying. You can’t go into a

Britain should expand Heathrow, argue MPs BRITAIN should expand London’s Heathrow airport by building a third or even fourth runway, lawmakers said yesterday, weighing into an argument pitting business leaders against environmentalists. Parliament’s Transport Committee rejected a plan championed by London Mayor Boris Johnson to build a new airport in the River Thames estuary to the east of the capital, citing the cost of new transport links and the impact on wildlife. It also dismissed suggestions that rising demand could be met by connecting existing airports with highspeed rail links. “We conclude that a third runway at Heathrow is necessary, but also suggest that a four-runway proposal may have merit,” the committee said in a statement released yesterday to coincide with the release of its report. Johnson rejected the committee’s assessment. “The Heathrowites are really intending to build a fourrunway airport in the west of London, which in my view would be environmentally and politically undeliverable,” he told BBC radio. “Let’s go for the long-term solution. Let’s exhaust all the other alternatives and do the right thing,” The committee’s inquiry was launched last year to consider how to increase London’s air transport capacity, which has been stretched to the limit by rising demand while the discussion over the expansion strategy has dragged on. Prime Minister David Cameron’s Conservative-led coalition government bowed to

London’s air transport capacity has been stretched to its limit by rising demand pressure from local residents and protest groups concerned about the environmental impact of a Heathrow expansion when it came to power in 2010 by scrapping plans to build a third runway. It also ruled out expanding London’s smaller airports. However, a top business lobby group said in March that Britain risked missing out on billions of pounds in trade if it failed to boost direct flights to the world’s fastest-growing economies, such as Brazil, China and Russia. Even lawmakers in Cameron’s party disagree over the best way to address the issue, but the committee’s findings will add to pressure on the government to look again at Heathrow, owned by Spanish infrastructure firm Ferrovial. “We urge the government to respond positively to this report and to actively consider what practical temporary measures could be implemented to secure additional capacity at Heathrow in the short-term,” the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry said.

negotiation like that without being willing to walk away.” Johnson insisted that withdrawal would not be as damaging to the UK economy as pro-Europeans claim. “I don’t think it would be anything like as cataclysmic as is being sometimes pretended,” he said. “I don’t think we would lose millions of jobs. I think the economic benefits and disbenefits are now much more balanced.” Downing Street has indicated that Cameron is “relaxed” about Tory MPs backing the rebel amendment tabled by Eurosceptic backbenchers Peter Bone and John Baron, which “respectfully regrets” that there was no legislation for an EU referendum in the Queen’s Speech. The PM’s official spokesman declined to say yester-

London Mayor Boris Johnson (above) was speaking amid growing pressure on the prime minister over Europe day whether a whip would be imposed on Conservatives if the amendment is selected by Speaker John Bercow for a vote next Tuesday or Wednesday. The spokesman did not rule out the possibility that the Prime Minister might even consider backing the amendment himself - effectively voting against the government’s own Queen’s Speech. The Sun yesterday report-

ed an unnamed Number 10 source as saying: “This amendment backs up his policy, which is a Conservative Party policy, so why shouldn’t he vote for it too?” Asked at a daily Westminster briefing whether he could rule out the PM voting for the amendment, the official spokesman said: “The amendment’s only recently been tabled, so the PM would want to carefully consider it.”

£29m ATM heist

RESCUED AFTER A NIGHTMARISH 17 DAYS BURIED UNDER RUBBLE

A WORLDWIDE gang of criminals stole £29 million in a matter of hours by hacking their way into a database of pre-paid debit cards then draining cash machines around the world, US prosecutors said. Seven people are under arrest in the US in connection with the case, which prosecutors said involved thousands of thefts from ATMs using bogus magnetic swipe cards carrying information from Middle Eastern banks. The fraudsters moved with astounding speed to loot financial institutions around the world, working in cells including one in New York, Brooklyn US Attorney Loretta Lynch said. She called it “a massive 21st-century bank heist” carried out by brazen thieves. One of the suspects was caught on surveillance cameras, his backpack increasingly loaded down with cash, authorities said. Others took photos of themselves with giant wads of notes as they made their way up and down Manhattan. Hackers got into bank databases, eliminated withdrawal limits on pre-paid debit cards and created access codes. Others loaded that data on to any plastic card with a magnetic stripe - an old hotel key card or an expired credit card worked as long as it carried the account data and correct access codes. A network of operatives then fanned out to rapidly withdraw money in multiple cities, authorities said. The cells would take a cut of the money, then launder it through expensive purchases or ship it wholesale to the global ringleaders. Lynch did not say where they were located. It appears no individuals lost money. The thieves plundered funds held by the banks that back up prepaid credit cards, not individual or business accounts, Ms Lynch said. She called it a “virtual criminal flash mob” and a security analyst said it was the biggest ATM fraud case she had heard of.

Cuyahoga County Sheriff deputies patrol the neighbourhood outside Ariel Castro’s home in Cleveland yesterday

Kidnap suspect is captive baby’s dad DNA tests show Ariel Castro, a former school bus driver charged with kidnapping and raping three women during a decade of captivity in his Cleveland house, is the father of a six-year-old girl born to one of the victims, the Ohio attorney general said yesterday. The tests did not link Castro to any other state cases, Attorney General Mike DeWine said in a statement. Castro, 52, was arrested shortly after Amanda Berry, her 6-year-old daughter, and two other women Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight, were found in his house in a rundown neighborhood of Cleveland on Monday. DeWine’s statement said that forensic scientists obtained a sample of Castro’s DNA late Thursday afternoon and “worked throughout the night to confirm that Castro is the father of the six-year-old girl born in captivity to one of the kidnapping victims.” Berry’s baby was born in a plastic inflatable children’s swimming pool on Christmas Day, 2006, authorities have said. The FBI is checking Castro’s DNA sample against national cases, DeWine said. Local authorities have said Castro is not a suspect in other cases.

The Cuyahoga County prosecutor vowed on Thursday to seek murder charges that could carry the death penalty against Castro because police say there is evidence that Knight suffered forced miscarriages. During their captivity, the women endured beatings, rapes and at times confinement in ropes and chains. Their imprisonment came to an end when neighbours, alerted by cries for help, broke through a locked door of Castro’s house and freed Berry, who had disappeared the day before her 17th birthday in 2003 on her way home from work at a fast-food restaurant. DeJesus, 23, vanished at age 14 after school, and Knight, 32, was 20 when she went missing in 2002. All three told police this week that they were abducted by Castro when they accepted his offers of a ride in the same West Side Cleveland neighborhood where they were found. Castro made his first court appearance on Thursday to face three counts of rape and four counts of kidnapping brought by the city attorney’s office, and he was ordered to remain in custody on an $8 million bond.

Bangladeshi rescuers retrieve assumed garment worker Reshma from the rubble of a collapsed building in Savar on May 10, 2013. Rescuers pulled a woman yesterday from the rubble of a Bangladesh garment factory 17 days after it collapsed, astonishing workmen who had been searching for bodies of victims of a disaster that has killed more than 1,000 people. Hundreds of onlookers burst into cheers as army engineers pulled the woman from the basement of the building after a workman helping to clear the wreckage reported hearing her faint cries of “Save me, save me” from beneath the ruins. Pale, drawn and seemingly unable to walk, the woman, who was identified by Bangladeshi media only as Reshma, was hoisted out of the rubble on a stretcher, then loaded into an ambulance in scenes broadcast live on television.

Rescuers speculated that she may have survived by drinking water that had pooled in the site when firemen doused a fire that had broken out earlier in the rescue effort. It was not clear if she was one of the thousands of garment workers who had been working in the eight-storey building, which collapsed on April 24, a day after its owner assured factory owners and news crews it would stand for “a century”. The woman was found hours after the death toll from the world’s worst industrial accident since the 1984 Bhopal disaster in India climbed above 1,000, as rescuers struggled to end the salvage operation. Bodies were still being pulled from the rubble of the Rana Plaza complex, and yesterday a spokesman at the army control room who was coordinating the operation said the number of people confirmed to have been killed had reached 1,045.

Khan enjoys late surge ahead of Pakistan polls By Michael Georgy FORMER Pakistan cricket star Imran Khan’s party was enjoying a late surge of support yesterday, the eve of a landmark election, raising the prospect of a fragmented parliament that could lead to weeks of haggling to form a coalition government. The failure of the major parties to capture a commanding lead raises the risk a weak government will emerge, clouding optimism over the first transition between civilian governments in a country that has been ruled by the military for more than half its history. The party of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif looks set to win the most seats,

Tough negotiations over government are expected returning Sharif to power 14 years after he was ousted in a military coup, imprisoned and later exiled. But Khan could end up holding the balance of power if there is no clearcut winner. In a sign of his popularity, 35,000 supporters turned up on Thursday at a rally in Islamabad that he didn’t even attend. The 60-year-old is in hospital after suffering injuries in a fall from a mechanical lift at a rally this week, which may also win him sympathy votes. “While Khan was initially

handicapped by the lack of party organisation and the absence of a formal presence at the provincial level, he managed to overcome these challenges by establishing a network of volunteers who have campaigned frenetically and held massive public rallies in recent weeks,” said Shamila Chaudhary, senior editor at Eurasia Group. Khan, Pakistan’s most well-known sportsmen who led a playboy lifestyle in his younger days, has emerged as a tough challenger to dynastic politicians who have relied heavily on a patron-

age system to win votes and are often accused of corruption. Campaigning officially ended at midnight on Thursday. Election-related violence that has killed more than 110 people continued on the eve of the vote. Five people were killed in bomb attacks on party offices on Friday, one in Quetta, capital of the southwestern province of Baluchistan, and the other in the northwestern city of Peshawar. The al Qaeda-linked Pakistan Taliban, which regards the elections as un-Islamic, are responsible for the attacks that have made this the country’s bloodiest election yet, and on Thursday they revealed plans for suicide bombings on polling day.

World Clashes over women’s worship

UK, Russia plan for interim Syria govt.

ISRAELI police held back thousands of ultra-conservative Jews who tried to drive liberal women worshippers from Judaism’s sacred Western Wall yesterday, marking a shift in the authorities’ handling of a long-running religious schism. Ultra-Orthodox protesters dressed in traditional dark clothing threw chairs and water at the women, then later stoned their buses. Two policemen were hurt. Previously police detained members of Women of the Wall, a group challenging the Orthodox monopoly over rites at Jerusalem’s Western Wall, for wearing prayer shawls in violation of Orthodox tradition. This time police arrested five religious protesters instead. The police response followed a court ruling last month that found that the group was not in violation of the law. The issue is at the heart of a long struggle between a secular majority and an ultra-Orthodox minority over lifestyle in a country where institutions such as marriage, divorce and burial are controlled by religious authorities. Dozens of border policemen formed a cordon to keep the protesters at the site - revered as part of the Biblical Jewish Temple compound - from charging at the approximately 100 women and some male supporters as they prayed. “They’re desecrating the site of our holy temple,” shouted one of the hundreds of Orthodox women who also came to protest against Women of the Wall.

RUSSIA and Britain agreed yesterday to work towards a transitional government in Syria, despite acknowledging differences in their approach to the Middle Eastern country’s ongoing civil war. British Prime Minister David Cameron said after talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Black Sea resort of Sochi that they had agreed “that as permanent members of the UN, we must help drive this process”. He said international efforts envisaged “not just bringing the regime and opposition together at one negotiating table, but Britain, Russia, America and other countries helping shape a transitional government that all Syrians can trust to protect them.”

Reliable follower: Iranian former parliament speaker, Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel waves as he registers his candidacy for the upcoming presidential election at the interior ministry in Tehran yesterday (AFP)

Khamenei aide enters presidential contest By Zahra Hosseinian AN adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei joined the presidential race yesterday, with powerful conservatives keen to make the June vote a peaceful contrast to the upheaval that followed the disputed 2009 poll. Khamenei has the final say on all matters in Iran and in theory stands above the political fray, but it is thought he wants a reliable follower in the presidency after Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s two turbulent terms in office. Reformist groups have been suppressed or sidelined since 2009 and the next president is likely to be picked from

Haddad-Adel first of a trio of Khamenei loyalists to register among a handful of politicians known for fealty to Khamenei, minimising the chances of political rifts leading to post-election chaos. Former parliament speaker Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel registered to run, state news agency IRNA reported, becoming the first of a trio of Khamenei loyalists expected to do so. Allied with Haddad-Adel are former Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Velayati and Tehran mayor Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf - Iranian media say

two of them will step aside later in favour of whoever appears to have the best chance of winning the election. “Our final choice will be announced after the Guardian Council’s decision,” the semi-official Fars news agency quoted Haddad-Adel as saying after registering, referring to a body which vets applicants before they are allowed to run. The conservative council, normally made up of six clerics and six jurists, will publish the final list of can-

didates it has approved later this month. The June 14 vote is a test for Iran after Ahmadinejad’s reelection in 2009 ignited the biggest street protests in the Islamic Republic’s history, badly denting the legitimacy of its entrenched leaders and its hybrid clerical-electoral system. But there is little of the popular enthusiasm there was in the run-up to the 2009 election when many sensed there was a possibility of real change in Iran. After years of ever tougher international sanctions over Tehran’s nuclear programme, many Iranians care more about the economy than political infighting.

UNDER PRESSURE Russia has been under pressure to cooperate more with Western powers at the United Nations Security Council on ending the bloodshed. Moscow has supported President Bashar al-Assad’s government and supplied it with weapons, but agreed with the United States this week to help bring the warring sides together for an international conference on ending the bloodshed. “We have a common interest in the quickest end to the violence and the initiation of a peace process, and the preservation of Syria as a territorially whole sovereign state,” Putin said after the talks. “On the initiative of the British prime minister, we discussed possible options for positive developments of this process and about a number of possible joint steps,” Putin added. He gave no details of the proposed steps.

Turkey investigating an alleged plot to assassinate Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew

It said police were still searching for two men in relation to the alleged plot.

The Ankara chief public prosecutor’s office, which local media said is leading the investigation, could not be immediately reached for comment. There has been at least one previous assassination plot against Bartholomew in recent years, but the patriarchate sought to play down yesterday’s reports.

Business Amplats scales back SA cuts plan

US tells Japan to stick to currency regulations

ANGLO American Platinum (AMSJ.J) said yesterday it would cut 6,000 South African mining jobs, fewer than half the 14,000 initially proposed, as it tries to restore profits without provoking a backlash from the government and restive unions. The world’s top platinum producer, a unit of Anglo American (AAL.L), added it would also keep open one of four shafts slated for closure near the platinum belt city of Rustenburg. Amplats aims to slash platinum production by 10 per cent or 250,000 ounces this year, equal to 4.5 per cent of global output. Another 100,000 ounces will go in the medium term. Under an original plan announced in January, it aimed to cut output by 400,000 ounces. The reduced job losses are likely to soften the blow for the African National Congress (ANC) government, which faces an election next year, but it remains to be seen if it appeases the anger of powerful local unions. “Everyone is surprised. We were not expecting any retrenchment at all. We can’t allow this,” Sphamandla Makhanya, a worker committee member at Amplats in Rustenburg told Reuters. “But before we do anything, we are going to have a mass meeting with the workers to decide what to do next.” For Amplats, reining in costs and cutting output to underpin the price of platinum, used for emissionscapping catalytic converters in vehicles, is crucial to getting back to profit. The company said it would now aim to produce 2.2 to 2.4 million ounces a year, up from the 2.1 to 2.3 million ounces targeted in the original plan. The revisions should deliver 3.8 billion rand ($423 million) in savings by 2015.

Dollar jumps to four-year high above 100 yen By David Milliken and Leika Kihara THE United States told Japan yesterday to stick to the rules when it came to the value of its currency, setting the stage for a potentially frank meeting of Group of Seven finance ministers outside London. Treasury Secretary Jack Lew said Japan had “growth issues” that needed to be dealt with, but that its attempts to stimulate its economy needed to stay within the bounds of international agreements to avoid competitive devaluations. “I’m just going to refer back to the ground rules and the fact that we’ve made clear that we’ll keep an eye on that,” Lew told the CNBC news channel. The yen hit a four-year low against the dollar earlier yesterday, beyond the psychologically-important 100 yen mark. It also trades at a three-year low against the euro. The moves were driven in part by Japanese investors shifting into foreign bonds, a move that has been expected since the Bank of Japan unveiled a massive stimulus plan. Tokyo insisted its tumbling yen would not be a hot topic at the meeting of finance chiefs, despite revived rhetoric about a currency war. “The Bank of Japan isn’t targeting currency rates, which are determined by the

Policymakers are concerned that Japan is engineering an export-led recovery that could hinder other regions’ ability to grow. But having urged Tokyo for years to do something to revive its economy, other world powers are not in a strong position to complain now that it is. Then there is the fact that central banks such as the Federal Reserve and Bank of England have printed money in the way the Bank of Japan is. “It is important that in line with the previous decisions at the G20 and IMF that

States, Germany, Japan, Britain, Italy, France and Canada, or at the broader G20 group. “There are no taboo subjects as we are in an informal setting,” International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde Lagarde said. UK Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne, host of the two-day meeting in a stately home set in rolling countryside 40 miles outside London, has been keen for his peers to focus on what more central banks can do to help growth at a time when most governments are trying to cut spending and bloated debts. “(This is) an opportunity to

there is no talk about currency wars,” EU economics chief Olli Rehn told reporters as he arrived at the summit. “There is discussion about how better to coordinate our economic policies.” German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said foreign exchange rates would be on the agenda and that Japan had promised to take a cautious approach to the currency issue. Participants welcomed the return to an informal G7 with no official communiqué. That could mean more robust debate than is generally aired at meetings of the United

consider what more monetary activism can do to support the recovery, while ensuring medium-term inflation expectations remain anchored,” he said. Osborne has tasked the next UK central bank governor, Mark Carney, with finding new ways to boost growth when he succeeds Mervyn King in July. Debate is also heating up about the need to ease up on austerity, something that Germany, Britain and Canada view as a mistake but Washington, Paris and Rome are in favour of. “For a global recovery ... it cannot be led by the United States alone ... There are countries in Europe that have more fiscal space to create a bit more economic demand,” Lew said. Rehn said there was room for a “smoother path of fiscal adjustment” in Europe as long as structural reforms intensified. Britain’s finance ministry said the talks over yesterday and today at the 17th-century country house were also likely to focus on bank regulation, tax avoidance and free trade. The emergency rescue of Cyprus in March acted as a reminder of the need to finish an overhaul of the banking sector, five years after the world financial crisis began. As at last month’s IMF meeting, Germany was set to come under pressure to give more support to a banking union in the eurozone. The plan could help strengthen the single currency area, but Berlin worries it may pay too much for future bank bailouts. “Banking union is an important project that should be based on two pillars: one, common supervision, and two, a resolution mechanism. We shall discuss both,” German central bank chief Jens Weidmann said.

Deepening trouble at its Spanish carrier Iberia contributed to wider first-quarter operating losses for IAG

INTERNATIONAL Airlines Group reported wider first-quarter operating losses yesterday, as deepening trouble at its Spanish carrier Iberia wiped out progress at British Airways. IAG, Europe’s third-biggest airline group by market value, made an operating loss of €278 million ($364 million) in the year’s first three months, traditionally weak for airlines. The Spanish carrier contributed €202 million s of that - up from €169 million a year earlier - as it suffered from competition from lowcost rivals and high-speed trains, labour disputes and a recession that has left a quarter of Spaniards out of work. Rival European carriers Lufthansa and Air France-KLM are also slashing jobs and shelving growth plans as they grapple with high fuel prices, a weak economy and fierce competition from low-cost carriers and Middle East airlines. IAG took a 311-million-euro charge in the quarter for restructuring that plans to cut 3,100 jobs to return Iberia - Europe’s biggest carrier to Latin America - to profit by 2015. That was on top of €545 million last year and while Chief Executive Willie Walsh said there was “more work to be done”, he said he did not expect further significant charges this year.

Liberum analyst Peter Hyde called IAG’s results a mixed bag. “To achieve our forecast 2013 operating profit of €505 million, IAG needs Iberia to restructure quickly and British Airways to leverage its market position,” he said. BA itself broke even during the quarter, helped by strength in business and first-class traffic, excluding costs relating to the integration UK carrier BMI which it bought last year. But IAG also suffered from the weakness of sterling against the euro and the dollar, pushing its losses up from €249 million a year ago and above the average 230-million-euro loss forecast by analysts in a Reuters poll. Shares in IAG, which have risen 20 per cent in the last month, were down 3.5 per cent at 270.5 pence by 1005 GMT, valuing the business at just over £5 billion. Prior to its merger with Iberia in 2011 BA faced similar problems to the Spanish carrier and responded by cutting staff, lowering salaries and offering more competitive ticket prices. IAG said it could not provide guidance for 2013 operating profit because it was waiting for shareholder approval for its fleet replacement orders, which could impact future profits.

Opinion

Neither the government nor the central bank inspires confidence WHAT IS happening at the Banks of Cyprus? Finance minister Haris Georgiades’ publicly-voiced displeasure on Thursday, over the slow pace of the restructuring process, put additional pressure on the bank and the Central Bank Governor, who does not seem to show a great sense of energy. While Governor Panicos Demetriades had given assurances that the process would be completed by early May, according to the minister, he subsequently suggested it would take another three to four months. There are admittedly legal issues slowing down the process, with Bank of Cyprus facing a host of legal suits against the deposits’ bail-in that it will have to deal with. The capital controls, which could remain in place for some time, further complicate matters and affect the restructuring process. But even acknowledging these problems, the process of restructuring has been very slow. It took weeks for the Central Bank to choose the interim board of directors and instead of appointing six members to make decisionmaking faster, it appointed 14. Meanwhile, the bank has been without a CEO since Yiannis Kypris was forced to resign by Demetriades. The post will be advertised next week, which means it could take another month or two before the position is filled; and then the new CEO, if an outsider, would need time to familiarise with the job. One of the biggest problems facing the bank is that it has no leadership. It is currently being run by an administrator who is in charge of the restructuring and an interim board that will step down when the process is completed. Add to this the addition of more than 2,000 Laiki Bank employees to its workforce, an ill-conceived decision that will cause much tension among staff when redundancies are made, and it becomes apparent that the bank’s troubles are far from over. The uncertainty and instability caused by the lack of leadership may suit the Central Bank Governor, because it allows him to keep the Bank of Cyprus under his control, but it does not exactly pave the way for the bank’s return to normalcy, which is what the government wants. It could be that Georgiades’ public dig at Demetriades is dictated by the minister’s desire to wrest control of the bank from him, but it is questionable whether the government would do a much better job of running it. The truth is, neither side inspires much confidence and, if the bank survives, as we all hope it does, it will be in spite of the government and the Central Bank.

Israel takes sides A

FTER making two major air strikes in and near Damascus in three days, Israel informed the Assad regime on Monday that it is not taking sides in the Syrian civil war. But of course it is. The Syrian government promptly claimed that these Israeli attacks proved what it had been saying all along: that the “armed terrorist groups” that are trying to overthrow Bashar al-Assad’s regime (i.e. the anti-regime fighters of the Free Syrian Army) are really the tools of a demonic alliance between Israel, the United States, conservative Arab states like Saudi Arabia and Qatar, and the Sunni Islamist fanatics of al-Qaeda. That is just as ridiculous as it sounds, but there were always a few little bits of truth in the Syrian regime’s story, and they are gradually getting bigger. It’s true that the Free Syrian Army is getting money and weapons from Saudi Arabia and Qatar, and that the United States supports it diplomatically. So do almost all other NATO members It’s true that the al-Nusra brigades, the most effective fighting force in the Free Syrian Army, are made up of Islamist extremists whose leaders claim to have ties with al-Qaeda – and that this has not stopped the Arab Gulf states and the United States from supporting the FSA. And it’s true that Israel is now attacking military targets on Syrian territory. It insists that those targets are actually advanced missiles and anti-aircraft weapons that Syria is planning to deliver to the Hezbollah

Comment Gwynne Dyer militia in Lebanon, and that may also be true. Hezbollah fought the Israeli army to a standstill in southern Lebanon in 2006, and Israel is anxious about what it could accomplish with better weapons. But even if Israel’s main worry is that advanced weapons would reach Hezbollah, the air strikes took place on Syrian territory, and the Syrian regime claims that 42 officers and soldiers of its army were killed in them. At the very least, Israel no longer feels that preserving the hostile but stable relations that prevailed for so long between Tel Aviv and Damascus is a high priority. Maybe this is just because it now assumes that Assad is a goner anyway, so there’s no point in worrying about whether he will be overthrown, even if what follows may be an Islamist regime that is even more hostile to Israel. Or maybe the Israelis believe that Assad will really

accept that there is a difference between killing Syrian troops who are guarding weapons that may be shipped to Hezbollah, and killing other Syrian soldiers who are not. They certainly hope that he’ll accept it. Tzachi Hanegbi, a confidant of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, told Israel Radio on Monday that the Netanyahu government aimed to avoid “an increase in tension with Syria by making clear that if there is activity, it is only against Hezbollah, not against the Syrian regime”. (Israel does not officially admit that it carried out the strikes, so it could not make an official statement about its motives for them.) The Assad regime said that the attacks were tantamount to a “declaration of war”, and that is true. It’s not that the Israelis have decided that Assad must go. It’s rather that they have looked down the road, seen a Sunni-Shia war looming in the eastern Arab world – and decided, rationally enough, that they have to be on the Sunni side. That war is already underway in Syria, where men from the majority Sunni Muslim community are the

‘The Assad regime said that the attacks were tantamount to a “declaration of war” and that is true’

main fighters in a revolt against a regime controlled by Shias of the Alawite sect. The same sort of war may be re-starting in Iraq, where the Shia majority who dominate the government have already fought one civil war with the Sunni minority in 2005-07. Those two Sunni-Shia wars might then coalesce and spread to Lebanon, where the Shias of Hezbollah are at odds with the Sunni Muslim and Christian communities. Weapons, money, and maybe direct military aid would come from Shia Iran to one side and from the Sunni countries to the south (Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the smaller Gulf states) to the other. In such a war, Israel would certainly prefer a Sunni victory. It has no desire to take an active part in a Sunni-Shia war, nor would its intervention be welcomed by either side. It worries that radical Islamist regimes might come to power in Syria, in the western part of Iraq, and even in Lebanon if the Sunnis won such a war. But Israel is at peace with its Sunni southern neighbours, while the Shia regimes to its north in Syria and Iraq and the Hezbollah group in southern Lebanon are all its sworn enemies. If it comes to an all-out struggle, Israel knows which side it wants to win. And in the meantime, it already feels a lot freer to take direct military action against the Syrian regime and Hezbollah if it thinks its interests are threatened. LETTER to the Editor The ever-increasing interest in ‘green buildings’ THERE IS an ever increasing interest worldwide in ‘green’ buildings with European and American building certifications in place. The first thing that comes to mind for most people when they hear about green buildings is energy. Surely energy is very important but its only one of many parameters that will make a building green. In a green building where we require to be able to purchase as little energy from outside as possible and the wellbeing of the occupants is of the utmost importance. In the northern hemisphere the south side of the house will be the one that should have the large doors and windows and the north side the small openings. Therefore the orientation of the building is of the greatest importance. We should however pay attention to the need to gather heat from the sun during the winter and prevent the heat from entering the building through its openings in the summer. This together with good insulation, use of natural lighting (or even passive solar

lights), low energy consuming fittings and wind and solar energy production, will reduce immensely the energy needs of the building. A feature that will add to the attractiveness of the building is the addition of a green roof or a green wall both of which also improve the energy performance of the building. Space permitting, a green wall is a very attractive feature to have inside the building. Another much easier issue to deal with is the water consumption of the house. We need to choose dual flush toilets, regulate the water pressure and add fittings to taps and water outlets. Rainwater harvesting and reuse in the garden or for the toilets combined with ground water, will greatly reduce water consumption. It is of course important to make sure that our garden is designed for the type of climate we have and use as little water as possible. An important feature that will also have a large impact on the energy needs of the building is the correct planting of trees around the building. We

need to prevent cold weather reaching the building from the north with a green barrier made up of bushes and trees. In the south we need to have trees that will cast a shade on the building during the summer, but lose their leaves during the winter to allow the sun to warm the walls and enter the windows and doors. For those that are adjacent to the beach and want to have a swimming pool you will find that two wells (In and Out of the pool) will give you a plentiful supply of healthy sea water that does not need to be treated with chemicals as you can keep replenishing this continually. For a healthy environment inside a house with children, we need to have excellent indoor air quality. In order to achieve this, we need to avoid having exposed horizontal surfaces and carpets that can gather dust and pay attention to the paints used, the materials with which furniture are made and the cleaning products used. These are very important especially in the children’s room

where we don’t want plastics, we need to carefully select certified textiles and all paints on walls and furniture should be ecologically certified. Certain plants are also important to have inside the house, like the “Areca” which attracts the harmful dust particles, the “money plant” which absorbs chemicals and the “sanseviera or Mother in law’s tongue” which keeps producing oxygen day and night. And of course the residents of a green building should cycle regularly so a provision should be made for the safe parking of the family bicycles. This is just a taste of the features we expect in a green building which should also be designed to be liveable for the whole life of the couple and the family, from being young to being able to move about when they get old. Judge drama dominates as American Idol nears climax Randy Jackson steps down after 12 years By Jill Serjeant VIEWERS are gearing up to crown the first female winner of American Idol in six years, but the biggest drama at the once-dominant Fox TV singing contest is taking place backstage over which of the celebrity judges will be voted off. Audiences for what was the most-watched TV show in the United States for eight years have slumped to new lows in the current 12th season, despite the addition of singers Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban to the judging panel. Veteran record producer Randy Jackson, the only member of the panel to have been with the show since it started in 2002, announced on Thursday that he was quitting after viewers vote for their winner next week. Jackson's announcement came a day after entertainment website TheWrap reported that Carey, Minaj and Urban would not be asked back, along with the show's longtime executive producer, Nigel Lythgoe. TheWrap.com said that Fox television was turning against paying huge salaries for bigname judges, only to see ratings fall. Fox and production company Fremantle Media on Thursday declined to com-

Audiences for what was the most-watched TV show in the US for eight years have slumped to new lows in the current 12th season, despite the addition of singers Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Keith Urban to the judging panel ment on the overhaul reported by TheWrap that have overshadowed the battle between singers Angie Miller, Candice Glover and Kree Harrison to reach the twopart finale. Carey, one of the world's best-known recording artists, is getting a reported $17 million salary, with rapper Minaj pulling in about $12 million and country singer Urban around $7 million a year for their jobs on the contest. Audiences for American Idol have fallen to around 12 million viewers per episode in recent months, compared to about 30 million during the show's heyday in 2006 and 2007.

The show is facing stiff competition from NBC rival The Voice. The report by TheWrap followed a story in The Hollywood Reporter last month that said producers had considered a mid-season replacement of Carey with Jennifer Lopez, who had quit the panel in 2012. Minaj told Idol host Ryan Seacrest in a Thursday interview for his E! News show that she enjoyed being a judge. But she dodged the issue of whether she would be back. "I feel happy here and I have to thank them for giving me this chance. They could have picked anyone in the world.

And they picked me. So that's all I'll say about that," Minaj said. Lyndsey Parker, managing editor of Yahoo! Music, said that Minaj had been met with a backlash from the core, middle-aged and family Idol audience, especially after reports last year of a feud between her and Carey. As for Carey, "she came to the panel with a lot more credibility than many others, but I don't think she is very good TV - a little bit low energy - and she rambles," Parker said. The backstage drama comes in a strong season for women, with female singers dominating the final rounds for the

first time in years. Seacrest will announce which contestants viewers have chosen to be in the finale in Los Angeles next Wednesday and Thursday. Battling for the two spots are piano-playing pop singer Miller, 18, from Massachusetts; former travel agent turned powerhouse soul singer Glover, 23, from South Carolina; and 22-year-old country singer Harrison, from Texas, whose personal story and the loss of both her parents has won as many hearts as her voice. Whoever is crowned the new American Idol will be the first female winner since Jordin Sparks in 2007.

Selena says dating Bieber ‘crazy and intense’ Twenty-year-old singer Selena Gomez has an on/off relationship with the Baby hitmaker and while they haven't clarified the status of their love life, she admitted all the attention surrounding them hasn't made their time together easy. She told InStyle: "It was crazy and very intense. It's uncomfortable that everywhere I go, people know. I don't like that. "I have to go through the emotions and feel it out. I'm doing my own thing, being with my friends, and he's doing very well too." The ballad Love Will Remember on her new album Stars Dance is about Justin and Selena thinks he will approve. She said: "That's the most personal track on the record for sure. I think it's a sweet way of releasing it. It's not an aggressive approach to what people are probably expecting. I'm sure he'll love it too." After Selena and Justin, 19, recently spent time together in Norway, her friends and family urged her to dump Justin for good. A source recently said: "We did everything we could to keep them apart but he was so persistent. "It's really unhealthy they have such a turbulent relationship at such a young age. He leaves her in floods of tears constantly. "She has had a really difficult year or so dealing with the tense emotions that come with dating him. We thought she had finally broken free. But he has persuaded her to take him back again. There's not much we can do about it - but we are going to try." Another friend added: "She spent the last year of their relationship an emotional wreck. And we can see no end in sight to this."

Psy wows Harvard with global appeal, dance moves Miley Cyrus By Ross Kerber

Gangnam Style is the most viewed video in YouTube history

SOUTH Korean rapper Psy said he 'partied hard' when his dance number drew its first 10 million views on YouTube last summer. Little did he know Gangnam Style would become the most-viewed video in the online service's history, with a global following and nearly 1.6 billion views. "I partied hard to celebrate 10 million views!" Psy told about 1,000 people at Harvard University on Thursday evening, as he recalled his reaction when the song took off, making him a cultural phenomenon and leading to meetings with Los Angeles record producers. "This is so unrealistic!" he recalled thinking. Formally dressed and speaking in sometimeshalting English, Psy spoke for more than an hour and occasionally lapsed into signature dance moves such as grasping the reins of an imaginary trotting horse. Psy's talk was partly a homecoming as he recalled his days as a student in Boston in the mid-1990s. But it was also a seminar about the star's surprise worldwide cultural appeal and the economic influence of East Asian culture. Harvard professor Alexander Zahlten introduced Psy, whose real name is Park Jae-sang, as a global figure who has shown the ability of Korean music stars, video-game programmers and other entertainment figures to find over-

seas popularity through Internet channels. "He's a global citizen, and in turn influences people all over the world," Zahlten said. "He's deeply connected to digital culture." After Gangnam Style set records, the video for Psy's follow-up song Gentleman received more than 20 million hits in the first 24 hours after its release last month, easily beating the previous record of 8 million views for Justin Bieber's Boyfriend in the first 24 hours. Psy, 35, told the audience at the Ivy League school that music trumps national divides. "Music makes everyone united," he said. "Something beyond language." At some performances, he said, "I'm so proud. The crowd doesn't know what the lyrics are about, but they look so happy!" Later he said the word for 'style' conveyed similar meanings in all languages, and that he wrote the lyrics for Gentleman hoping they would find a similar worldwide resonance. "Really , it was linguistics," he said. Psy also poked fun at his own less-than-stellar academic record. He said his nickname in college was 'WWF' for his grades, "withdraw, withdraw, fail." He said he kept thinking big and poked fun at his robust midsection. "I dreamed someday, some Korean artist would be well-known in the US," he said. "I dreamed about it but didn't dream that was me, because as you see I have a very special body type."

‘stalked by ghosts’

MILEY Cyrus was was stalked by ghosts while living in London. The 20-year-old singer and her family rented an apartment in the English capital during her 2009 European tour but they had to move to a hotel after a number of ghostly encounters. She told British Elle magazine: "It was so terrifying. One night, my little sister was standing in the shower and all of a sudden, I hear her scream. I run in there and the water had somehow flipped to hot. It wasn’t like the water had just changed, the knob had turned but she hadn’t turned it and it was burning her. She was really red. "I thought I had seen a little boy sitting on the sink watching me take a shower so I felt really freaked out."

Sony gadgets continue to struggle despite profit rise The paid-for content will be in addition to the millions of free videos on YouTube

YouTube to launch pay-to-view channels YOUTUBE is poised to announce a series of channels that will require payment, a person familiar with the matter says. The content on the new pay channels will be in addition to the millions of videos viewers watch for free on YouTube. It is not clear whether the paid videos will come with advertising. The Financial Times reported earlier that viewers would be charged as little as $1.99 (£1.30) a month for subscriptions. In a statement, YouTube said it was looking into creating a “subscription platform” that provided its partners with a way to generate revenue beyond video rentals and placing ads in and around content. It said, however, that it had “nothing to announce at this time”. Executives hinted at the coming pay channels at a preview event in March ahead of a meeting in New York with advertisers. Such a model could help video producers make money from niche audiences. That is different from how YouTube works now, where the most popular videos, like PSY’s Gangnam Style music video, make the most money from advertising. One example given by executives was of video lessons by a computer science teacher. “For people who create great value but for only a narrow interest group, I think that the potential for pay channels unlocks opportunities for creating revenue streams,” said Lucas Watson, YouTube’s vice president of sales and marketing, at the time. Introducing pay channels would also accustom fans of YouTube to paying for content, something the site is not known for, although it has sold and rented movies and TV shows from major studios since late 2008. “It’s a whole new skill set to develop: to convince people to actually take out their credit card, even for one cent,” said Robert Kyncl, YouTube’s vice president and global head of content partnerships, told reporters at the March event.

Bid for revival now hinges on sale of smartphones By Tim Kelly SONY Corp forecast a drop in sales of cameras and game machines this business year as its consumer gadget business struggles despite a rebound in profit to five-year highs and a boost from the weak yen. Sony’s bid for revival as an electronics maker now hinges on sales of its smartphones, which it projected to rise more than onefourth to 42 million in the year to next March, as consumer spending converges on Apple Inc’s iPads and Samsung Electronics Co’s Galaxy phones. In the year to next March, Sony expects an operating profit of 230 billion yen ($2.33 billion), compared with the average 210 billion yen profit estimated by 19 analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S before Thursday’s earnings announcement. The company bounded back into the black last year with a profit of 230.1 billion yen that was bolstered by earnings from the sale of office buildings in Tokyo and New York, the revaluation of stock holdings and gains from the sale of businesses including a chemical unit. Its mainstay electronics business has continued to struggle however, with both its mobile and TV businesses posting losses in the last business year. Sony’s boss, Kazuo Hirai, in 2012 identified mobile products, gaming and digital imaging as the core of a rebound in consumer electronics after more than a decade of decline for the pioneer of per-

With compact cameras and its PSP and PS Vita handheld game consoles suffering under an onslaught of smartphones and tablets PCs, investor hopes for Sony have gelled around its new Xperia Z phone, which has exceeded sales targets since its launch in January. Helping Hirai is a weakening yen that in addition to bolstering overseas earnings in yen terms is making Sony’s phones and other gadgets more competitive against offerings from foreign rivals.

With greater exposure to overseas markets than domestic rivals Panasonic Corp and Sharp Corp, Sony is the best-placed among the big three TV makers to gain from the weaker yen, particularly versus the euro. The maker of Bravia sets forecast sales of televisions to rise to 16 million this business year with the division seen returning to profit, after a sharp drop last year to 13.5 million. Presence (inset) converts a spare Internet-connected iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch into a free video camera with real-time video and audio streaming, and motion detection and notifications. “Essentially we give you an inexpensive security system that you can use to monitor your house, or help you watch your kids, cats, elderly relatives or act as a baby or nanny cam,” said Gene Wang, chief executive of the Palo Alto, California-based company People Power. Unlike traditional monitoring systems that can be expensive and need technical knowledge to install and use, Wang said Presence is a free do-it-yourself system that can

be set up simply by downloading and configuring the app. To use it, consumers install and log in to their account on two devices - for example two iPhones. Then they can

start the camera within the app on one of the devices and it can be viewed from the app on the other. Triggers can also be set to record when motion is detected and to send alerts. The app can help to avoid false alarms, according to Wang, because it sends a video clip in an email to the user showing the motion that triggered the alert. Another app created by a company called People Power 1.0 for iPhone and Android reads electricity metres in real time to show consumers how much they’re spending and if they are going over budget. “The centre of computing has switched to these smart computers that we all carry in our pockets,” Wang explained. “What people are going to want to be able to do is control their personal Internet of Things from their hands,” he added, referring to Internet-connected devices in the home.

per cent drop, while its handheld game consoles, the PSP and PS Vita, are projected to fall nearly 30 per cent to 5 million. Sony has also benefited from steady earnings from music, movies and its insurance subsidiary that are in stark contrast to the prolonged doldrums in its hardware business. Since the start of the year Sony’s shares have gained 82 per cent compared with a 37 per cent rise in the benchmark Nikkei 225. Its shares fell 1.4 per cent on Thursday to close at 1,744 yen before it released its latest forecast.

Scopes was arrested for teaching the theory of evolution

Scopes hearing takes place In 1925, John T. Scopes was given a preliminary hearing before three judges. He had been arrested and charged under a new Tennessee state law, the Butler Act, which prohibited the teaching of Darwin’s theory of evolution in public schools. The trial became known as the “Scope’s Monkey Trial”, and at its end in 1925, he was found guilty and fined $100. Although upon appeal the fine was overruled, the state law itself was not found unconstitutional.

HEN I meet Simon Pegg in a Central London hotel room I tell him I actually know him better than he knows I know him. I was your neighbour for the six years you lived on my road in North London, I say. You lived opposite. “Really?” he queries. Yes, I say. We’re a friendly road, but because you went about so determinedly with your baseball cap pulled down over your face we assumed you didn’t want to be spoken to and then, a couple of years ago, you suddenly decamped to Hertfordshire. “And I thought I was so unloved!” he says. “You know, part of Shaun of the Dead was about living in the city and not noticing people dying under your nose. But maybe it’s me. Maybe it isn’t the condition of London. I left thinking no one talks to each other. Daft bastard! You should have come over and had a cup of tea!” And you, I say, could have come over if you’d ever needed to borrow a tin of tomatoes! Oh, well, too late now. He doesn’t look that heartbroken, but from what I’ve seen of him, from behind my net curtains he’s not the kind ever to give too much away. Credit where credit is due, he does scrub up nicely. I remember him as quite T-shirty and bum-fluffy and dog-whiffy (he was always walking his miniature Schnauzer, Minnie) but today he is neatly

apbearded, dressed dapperly, and his hair is all ack. smartly slicked back. We’ve tipped up to discuss his new film, Star Trek Into Darkness, the second instalment in chise the rebooted franchise otty, in which he plays Scotty, chief engineer of the Starsponship Enterprise, responything sible for fixing everything d beamaround the place and ing up his shipmates. Listen, I tell him, I’m no Trekkie, have never boldly gone anywhere in the least bit exciting, and I can’t speak Klingon (except enough to get by on holiday) but honestly, these films are great: fun and exciting, yet also involving. He says: “JJ Abrams [the director] knew exactly the invigoration Star Trek needed. It had got a bit bogged down in its own mythology. The hardcore fans liked all that but for a mainstream audience it wasn’t doing anything. JJ gave it some Star Wars pizzazz, some decent emotional hooks and characters you can relate to.” Abrams has since been confirmed as the director on the three Disneyfunded Star Wars sequels, which looks good for Pegg as Star Trek Into Darkness is his fourth film with Abrams. And Pegg likes Star Wars even more than Star Trek. As a teenager it “totally blew me away”. No doubt he’ll be hoping to play Obi Wan Ke-

nobi’s great-nephew or R2D2’s love child. His Channel 4 comedy Spaced, in which he made his name alongside long-term collaborator Nick Frost, was littered with Star Wars allusions. Star Trek Into Darkness also stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the baddie, which is good, but it is in 3D, which, to my mind, is very, very bad. Pegg is all for defending the technology – “anything that

gets people out and into cinemas is good,” he says. “I can see 3D may be beside the point,” he says. “JJ didn’t actually want to shoot this in 3D, but the studio was keen he did.” And, yes, 3D is about spectacle, not story, or characters you can relate to, and “films are becoming more and more like fireworks” but “having said that... this Star Trek is amazing!” We both laugh. Pegg is mostly described as “incredibly likeable” but only when he’s not being described as “immensely likeable” or “intensely likeable” and I’d go along with all that. But his incredible/immense/ intense likeability is always countered by an expression of surprise that someone like him has made it to Hollywood’s A-list with more than three million Twitter followers in tow. I am as guilty of this as anyone when I ask: “Are you ever walking down the road when you suddenly think: ‘Heck, I know Tom Cruise [they starred together in two Mission: Impossible films]. I could call him right now!’” He says: “These kinds of things seem far more exotic than the truth of it. You meet someone, you get to know them a little bit, you swap numbers and by the time it arrives as fact, it’s fairly mundane.” He must register my disappointment because he adds, quickly: “But if you think of it the way your nan would think of it, then I guess it is kind of cool. I do get excited if Tom Cruise emails me, because it’s Tom Cruise. So I always show it

Beamed up from Gloucester to Hollywood, via zombie massacres, alien hitchhikers and the Starship Enterprise, Simon Pegg has become the galaxy’s leastlikely sci-fi hero. But while his head is in the stars, his feet remain firmly on planet Earth, he tells Deborah Ross

to my wife and go: ‘Look, look!’” What, I ask, do you make of people’s surprise at your becoming such a player? Do you find it a bit insulting? Why shouldn’t Simon Pegg be a star? It’s not like you’re a hunchback frothing at the mouth or anything. It perplexes him, too. “I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. Perhaps it’s because I play fairly regular characters, and

people do project assumptions on you depending on the characters you play. Also, I do think I’m probably quite an average person.” Still? Haven’t you been sucked into the celebrity bubble without even knowing it? “You do try to carry on as normal,” he says, “but it’s such a juggling act. “You do have to watch yourself in situations where you are being looked after too

much,” he agrees. “You have to make sure you don’t take it for granted and understand it’s for no other reason than your profession. The trouble is, you are overvalued as an actor because you are the cosmetic face of the thing, and if anything happens to you, or you are not in the right place at the right time, then money is lost. It’s easy to mistake that attention for someone considering you im-

portant personally. You have to remember that, and keep a reality check on yourself at all times. I don’t think fame, whatever that means, can turn someone into a bad person, but it can bring out the worst in you. As long as you go into it a good person, or at least have some integrity, you should emerge unscathed. I know plenty of people who are famous and are still very nice. Occasionally, you do

meet people whose success has brought out the absolute horror in them...” Who, who, who? Do tell! “I’m not saying, but they don’t last very long.” So you never shout at Maureen to bring your car out front? No, he says, although sometimes, on returning from a press tour, where everything is done for him, “I will get home and literally stand in the middle of the living room and ask Maureen where I’m supposed to be.” Pegg is a Gloucester boy who was very much part of the 1970s popular culture explosion and grew up well-televised in ways others might grow up well-read. He loved The Incredible Hulk, The Invisible Man, Planet of the Apes, Lost in Space, Morecambe and Wise, Star Trek (the animated version), Doctor Who (the Jon Pertwee years) and The Two Ronnies. He’s obviously super-smart but having read in his autobiography that he’d failed his 11-plus, I want to know: how so? He says: “I was put in a little room in my primary school and given this perplexing booklet and told it was going to determine my future, and I didn’t respond well to it. It just goes to show how useless standardised testing can be.” He studied drama and began his career as a standup before finding fame with Spaced, which ran for two series, and then the comedy horror film Shaun of the Dead. Since then, he hasn’t stopped. He’s written and starred in more comedies Hot Fuzz, Run Fatboy Run, Paul and the forthcoming The World’s End -plus there are the two Mission Impos-

sible films (one of which was directed by Abrams), The Adventures of Tintin (Spielberg) and now Star Trek. I ask: If someone had never heard of Simon Pegg, what would you choose to show them? What most says: ‘This is me.’ “Shaun,” he says. “It’s not the first thing I ever did, but it was my first film, and my first creative venture with Edgar [Wright, the director, with whom he’s worked on many projects since].” It was brilliant, I say, but I’m confused about zombies, just as I’m confused about the living dead generally. “Oh?” he says. Why do they always have it in for the living living? Why do they want to eat us? Why don’t they go to Tesco, fill the car, return home and unpack it all like everyone

else? What makes them so special? “Ha!” he says. “The brilliant thing about zombies is that they have no morality, they don’t show us any ill will, they just want to eat us. It’s our basic instinct reduced to this one unstoppable thing. It’s death, in a way, and death is our greatest fear.” Who, I ask, would you like to eat if you were a zombie? Nigella? She looks juicy. “I think I’d like to eat her even if I wasn’t a zombie!” he says and, blow me, if he doesn’t come over just that little bit lively. I’m not saying he isn’t a lively person, just that he seems to take everything in his stride, pretty much, and so will probably remain sane in a business not renowned for it. He has a stable home life with Maureen and Minnie

and their daughter Matilda, three. He loves what he does. “My barometer for success,” he says, “is entirely about happiness and has nothing to do with any material gains at all. What I really value is enjoying my job, going into work, sitting in the make-up chair, having a cup of coffee, doing the crossword, getting on set and loving all that.” And then going home for a squeeze of Matilda’s fat thighs? He says: “Tilly’s three now, so not so baby shaped, but they are still chunky enough for a good squeeze.” I could have babysat, I tell him, if only you’d stayed in Crouch End. “I have,” he concedes, “lost so much from moving away.” Again, he doesn’t look too distressed, but that’s just the way he is, I think.

Looking Ahead Music An evening with the violoncello THE French Institute of Cyprus in collaboration with the ARTos Foundation is organising a recital by Alexis Descharmes to take place on Wednesday, at the ARTos Foundation. Descharmes is a modern violoncellist who is fascinated by contemporary musical repertories. Today, he is an active international ambassador for his instrument and its repertoire. Born in 1977, and trained at the Paris Conservatoire (in the classes of Michel Strauss and Philippe Muller), Descharmes was the winner of the Valentino Bucchi (1997) and Avant-Scènes (1999) competitions. He was then supported in succession by various foundations, and has worked with the Ensemble Intercontemporain, Ensemble Alternance, and Ensemble Court-circuit. Dedicatée of some fifty contemporary works, concertante and solo alike, Descharmes’ discography con-

sists of some 20 recordings, in solo or with the aforementioned ensembles. He joined the Orchestra of the Paris National Opera in 2006, and since 2004 he has collaborated regularly with the French Embassy in Washington DC for the Contemporary Music Series of La Maison Française. Descharmes recorded Saariaho’s complete cello works for a definitive 2006 recording, and his upcoming performance is a rare chance to see a live rendition of one of those pieces. His concert in Cyprus will have a distinctive Cypriot flavour. Descharmes will perform contemporary music derived from contemporary composers (Henri Dutilleux, Zoltan Kodaly, Philippe Hurel, Kaija Saariaho) and will put a special emphasis on Cypriot composers such as Christina Athinodorou, Yiorgos Christophi and Faidros Kavallaris. Alexis Descharmes Recital with modern French violoncellist. The programme includes contemporary music with a special emphasis on Cypriot composers. May 15. On The Scene Theatre Review of Stage One Theatre Group Party Piece a comedy by Richard Harris – Wednesday May 8, Emba Theatre STAGE One Theatre Group last Wednesday evening went from the sublime to the ridiculous. Following their dramatic piece in March they descended into the ‘comic’ world of Richard Har-

Assault on the senses INTERNATIONALLY acclaimed artist Kurt Hentschläger is currently exhibiting his work Cluster at the Office Gallery in old Nicosia. Last month made for a great start to the Office Gallery’s spring season with an exhibition by British taxidermist/artist Polly Morgan and this month the gallery welcomes yet another inspiring artist in Hentschläger. The Chicago-based Austrian artist is known around the world for creating large-scale performances and immersive environments reflecting on the metaphor of the sublime and the human condition, and his current work further researches human perception and the impact of new technologies on both individual and collective consciousness. Cluster is an artwork that invites the gallery visitor to enter a space, which is both immersive and abstract. Cluster offers a cinematic, audiovisual experience where the viewer encounters a fish of humanoid creatures – not quite human bodies – contained in a darkened space. Human figures appear mostly as interconnected, dependant bodies, as a pulsing, tumbling and amorphous mass rather than individuals asserting their own will. By its generative nature never fully

ris and his domestic farce Party Piece, which is not a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination. The play is set in the back gardens of what should have become feuding neighbours on the night of a house warming fancy dress party of new residents Michael Smethurst (Mick Page in way over the top form impersonating the late Richard Briers) and his wife Roma (a hysterically neurotic Dawn Charman). The evening disintegrated into a series of contrived disasters that frankly bored the socks off this writer. The blame must initially lie with Harris whose reputation must be at stake for creating such banality. Then to Stage One for

predictable, Cluster takes on a life of its own. It gives the viewer a sense of ‘being’ in ourselves - bringing our consciousness to the fore. Hentschläger has been fascinated with creating engaging and overwhelming experiences since the early 1990s, experimenting with extreme subsonics and large video with very little to ‘view’ in the traditional sense – there are no points of reference, nothing representational, no object – the viewer becomes a participant in the experience. By creating this condition and controlling the spatial environment, the artist gives us the projections. Cluster draws some of its ambiguity from repetitive, rhythmical elements

selecting such a piece, and finally the director – Carol Harvey - who worked so hard to breathe life into a play where the characters are unexciting, underdrawn and necessitate the actors to overplay to create humour into the situations. Such situations were unbalanced with the complex upstairs and downstairs of two semi-detached houses with their back gardens, back doors and French windows failing to create the required farcical environment. The stage became cluttered, the timing of lines missed, whatever audience reaction should have been there and usually good performers became too embarrassing for

as well as from natural improvised structures. The bulk of sounds in the work are rendered by the events driving the work - swarm motion and behaviour as well as changes in light and colour. Trained as a fine artist, Hentschlager began to exhibit his work in 1983, building surreal machine-objects and then video, computer animation and sound works. Between 1992 and 2003 he worked collaboratively as a part of the duo GranularSynthesis. Employing large-scale projected images and drone like sound-scapes, his performances confronted the viewer on both a physical and emotional level, overwhelming the audience with sensory stimulation. Hentschläger is a recipient of numerous prizes and large scale commissions. He has represented Austria at the 2001 Venice Biennial and has shown his work internationally for two decades. comfort. Carole Manuel in the role of the elderly harridan Mrs Hinson tried hard to create a convincing character but her performance was too subtle against the others in the cast. Her son David (Andy Fox) and his wife Jennifer (Judith Fox) were next in line of seeming normality in farcical situations but I lost interest due to the writer’s lack of inventive and pithy dialogue. Finally the two roles of Toby (Terry Jones playing himself) and the under written Sandy Lloyd-Meredith (the attractive Gail Stokes) did little to liven up the proceedings with their late arrival as the only guests to accept the party invitations.

The back-up to this production, the building of such a complex set, lighting, props and costumes plus a complex stage management plot gave much work to the team but unfortunately lacked conviction in directional sound. However, if this was a lesson in how to play farcical comedy please return to drama Stage One because you are capable of so much better. Carnage (LTV, 18.30) “At least our kid isn’t a little wimpy-ass faggot!” “Yours is a f***ing snitch!” Oh dear, it’s all gone terribly wrong. Kate Winslet and Christoph Waltz’s little boy hits Jodie Foster and John C. Reilly’s little boy during a playground argument, so John and Jodie invite Kate and Christoph over to their home to discuss the unfortunate incident in a civilised manner. Jodie is dry and a bit self-righteous, Christoph an obnoxious workaholic; John and Kate try to keep the peace - but eventually get sucked in as middle-class politeness gives way to barbs, then arguments, then all-out shouting matches. “I believe in the god of carnage,” says Waltz, speaking of the skull beneath our civilised skin, God

of Carnage being also the title of Yasmina Reza’s original play - and the film is clearly based on a play (four characters, one location) but it’s still very enjoyable, if only as a case of some good actors going increasingly nuts. “I’m glad our son kicked the shit out of your son, and I wipe my ass with your human rights!”. I’m sorry, is that tone really necessary? Made in 2011.

Meeting Evil (Novacinema1, 22.00) What, Dr. Evil? Bald supervillain from Austin Powers? “Why make trillions when we can make ... billions?” Alas, nothing so amusing - just a straight-to-video thriller with reliably deranged Samuel L. Jackson as a homicidal psycho. “This guy, he can kill anyone,” sighs

Meeting Evil

glum-faced Luke Wilson (the Most Boring Actor of all time), an ordinary joe who’s befriended by mysterious stranger Sam and taken on a murderous road trip. “All I do is kill people who are already dead,” claims Mr. Jackson - but in fact he’s evil, with designs on unfortunate Luke and his family. The truth is that no film with Sam Jackson can be totally worthless, especially when he narrows his eyes and does that bombastic thing where he raises his voice like a fire-and-brimstone preacher - but the other truth is that Jackson isn’t picky about the films he makes, and there’s quite a few duds on his extensive resumé. Given that this film made a total of $181 (!!!) in US cinemas, I’m assuming it counts as yet another one. Made in 2012.

ARIES March 21 - April 20

LEO July 23 - August 22

SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 21

This can be a lucky day, as a personal wish may come true, plus you seem to be very happy in your surroundings. A spur of the moment idea might amp up the vibes, especially if you’re in need of a little excitement. Finances continue to be a subject of much thought. Despite your calculations, you may give in and buy that special item anyway.

Filled with drive and ambition, you seem ready to go that extra mile. Clear thinking and a sound and practical plan may go a long way to helping you get ahead. A change of schedule with regard to a social event may work out well. Be careful though, as your words may have a powerful effect on your listeners. Try to empathise where possible.

The company of good friends may be just what you need to help you forget about work concerns or health issues. Keeping busy today may keep you physically active and motivated. A walk in nature might be the answer to helping you keep calm, and get you in the mood for some fun and good times with pals tonight. A pleasant surprise may uplift you.

TAURUS April 21 - May 21

VIRGO August 23 - September 23

CAPRICORN December 22 - January 20

Let an optimistic outlook carry you through this day, even if you have news or gossip to contend with. It’s not a good idea to lend or borrow money from a friend, as it might spoil your relationship in some way. You may find it hard to stint on luxuries, especially as you may be at your sensuous best. Try to set some limits if you possibly can.

Your optimistic spirit, associated with support from others, assures you that progress can be made, especially if you’re doing something for the first time. Pay attention to detail though, as you may be tempted to gloss over an issue that needs greater focus. Reading about other countries or other people’s travel adventures may whet your appetite.

Intimate relationships may fare better than group get-togethers. Taking a date or sweetheart out for a meal may be a good way to wind down and get over any disappointments. The accent is on enjoying yourself and taking time out of your busy schedule to do things that give you pleasure. Creative activities may be particularly rewarding

It may be time for a fresh start in your relationship with a boss, parent or authority figure. They may surprise you with an unexpected piece of news or spontaneous decision that might make no sense. However, you’ll likely see where they’re coming from later. An intuitive hunch might encourage you to get in touch with an old friend or flame

You could be in two minds about which direction to take, as you seem to have a number of choices open to you today. It’s a good time to pursue studies, especially if a subject seems to call out to you. Money through communications is possible. Ideas about making your money work harder for you can be put into practice with deliberate caution.

Home comforts may be very appealing today. Maybe this is the perfect time for a spot of DIY or sprucing up. If the desire to relax is there, perhaps you should give in to it. Romantic opportunities look promising. Friends and ideas may seem to call to you. Explore fresh options and consider involving yourself in anything with a cultural bias.

CANCER June 22 - July 22

SCORPIO October 24 - November 22

PISCES February 20 - March 20

You have reason to feel exuberant, possibly because your social life is currently showing an upswing. The prospects for a nice weekend may encourage you to let your guard down and say something you shouldn’t. Solo? Opportunities for romance seem plentiful, especially as you may be in the mood to reach out and make new connections.

If you take a friend to lunch, share ideas at work or do something nice for your partner or latest love interest, it can go well. The more you’re willing to co-operate or include others in your plans, the happier and more successful you can be. You may have a desire to splash out on the spur of the moment, especially if it can help you gain greater information.

You may turn to friends as a pick-me-up. If you need a boost, the people who really matter can lift you. You seem keen to reach out and chat, make connections and keep in touch. Perhaps doing so, can help you forget about a troubling issue. There’s also plenty of support for you on the home front. An evening’s entertainment plan may work out well.

Sport British Olympic sailing champ dies in America’s Cup training Artemis flips over, trapping ‘Bart’ Simpson underwater By Ronnie Cohen

IN BRIEF

BRITISH yacht-racing champion and two-time Olympic medalist Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson was killed on Thursday when his vessel capsized in San Francisco Bay during training for the America’s Cup, his team said. Simpson, 36, who won a gold medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, was sailing on the Artemis, Sweden’s entry in the America’s Cup, when the catamaran overturned, according to a statement posted on the Artemis racing website. “The entire Artemis Racing team is devastated by what happened,” CEO Paul Cayard said in the statement. “Our heartfelt condolences are with Andrew’s wife and family.” The twin-hulled boat was performing a so-called ‘bearaway’ manoeuvre, turning away from the wind, when one bow dropped under the water’s surface, and the vessel flipped over, America’s Cup spokesman Tim Jeffery told Reuters. Simpson ended up trapped beneath the boat in the water and had to be pulled out by rescue divers, who tried and failed to revive him, Jeffery said. The yacht was “very badly damaged,” but the team has a backup boat that is expected to be ready to sail in June, he said. The incident was believed

Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson, 36, who won a gold medal at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing (below), was sailing on the Artemis, Sweden’s entry in the America’s Cup, when the catamaran overturned to be the first fatality in connection with the America’s Cup since the early 1990s, when a crew member from a Spanish team died in a training accident off the coast of Majorca in the Mediterranean, Jeffery said. The Artemis website said Simpson was part of an 11member sailing team and that all other crew members had been accounted for following the mishap. San Francisco Fire Department spokeswoman Mindy Talmadge confirmed that one male crew member had died in the accident and said he was estimated to have remained under water for 10 to 15 minutes before he was recovered. She said one other sailor from the Artemis was taken to a hospital with minor injuries and later released. The precise number of people aboard the Artemis when it tipped over was not immediately clear.

Although America’s Cup vessels sail with 11 crew members when they race, they are known to carry one or two more or one or two fewer members on practice runs. A US Coast Guard officer, Pam Boehland, said support boats had pulled 12 crew members from the water, and that one was taken to a

San Francisco hospital. Boehland said the Artemis capsized at about 1pm local time northwest of Treasure Island. The crippled vessel remained in the bay, and the Coast Guard established a 100-yard (91-metre) safety zone around the boat, she said. Winds on Thursday were blowing on the water at 18 to 20 knots, or about 23 to 25 miles per hour, which race organisers described as typical for the bay. “The boats are designed to sail and compete in winds of up to 30 knots ... so this wasn’t excessive,” one America’s Cup official told Reuters. “It was windy but not super-extreme.” Race organisers said Simpson was assigned as the crew’s tactician but also would have been involved in operating winches and performing other tasks necessary to sail the twin-hulled boat.

This year’s America’s Cup competition begins in July with qualifying races known as the Louis Vuitton Cup. The America’s Cup contest itself is slated to start on September 7. All the races will be run on San Francisco Bay. Two other challenging teams, one from Italy and one from New Zealand, recently arrived in the Bay Area to begin training there. The crew of the defending America’s Cup champion boat, Oracle Team USA, was on the bay for training at the time the Artemis capsized, America’s Cup officials said. Oracle Team USA’s boat flipped over in a practice run in October, damaging the windsail. But no one was injured, and the vessel was relaunched in January. The wreck of the Artemis was at least the fourth major accident in just over a year off the California coast or involving California vessels.

Youngs honoured to follow Cummins to recuperate in his mentor Robshaw England with Australia A TOM Youngs’ remarkable season reached a new high on Thursday night when the Leicester hooker was named Aviva Premiership Player of the Year. Youngs was rewarded for a campaign in which he made his England debut and was called up by the British and Irish Lions - just three years after making the unprecedented switch from inside centre to hooker. “Chris (Robshaw) won it last year and is a great bloke and a great mentor to learn from so it’s great to follow in his footsteps.” Youngs won the main award ahead of Steve Borthwick, Danny Care, Akapusi Qera, Julian Salvi and Christian Wade.

YOUNG fast bowler Pat Cummins will travel with the Australia A squad on their tour of England as part of his recuperation from a back injury but will not play any matches, Cricket Australia said yesterday. Cummins, who turned 20 on Wednesday, is the great hope of Australian pace bowling but injury has prevented him from donning the baggy green cap since he took seven wickets in a remarkable Test debut in South Africa in October 2011. CA are determined that Cummins will not be harmed longterm by being rushed back into action when he is not ready and have been heavily protective of him since he emerged onto the international scene as a teenager.

Ovechkin’s Stanley Cup dream on ice

Alonso must make the most of being at home

By Julian Linden

F1’s European season starts in Barcelona By Alan Baldwin FERRARI’S Fernando Alonso needs to make the most of home advantage when Formula One’s European season starts up in Barcelona on Sunday. The Spaniard has ground to make up on Red Bull’s triple champion Sebastian Vettel after four races in Asia and the Middle East. “If I was to score our overall performance, I would only give it a six out of 10,” Ferrari chief designer Nikolas Tombazis told the Ferrari website (www.ferrari.com) ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix. “We are not yet quite where we want to be,” he added. “In the first four grands prix we were not really able to fight for pole position and that is one of our main objectives at the moment.” The days when Alonso could count on the emotional boost of two home grands prix are gone. The Spaniard won in Valencia last year, but that race in the indebted port city is off the 2013 calendar, and he needs to get back on top of the podium at the Circuit de Catalunya. This time a year ago, Alonso arrived in Barcelona 10 points adrift of world champion Vettel in a battle that ultimately went down to the wire in the German’s favour. Now, despite Ferrari having a much more competi-

tive car and Alonso winning in China, the gap between them is already 30 points and all the top teams are bringing new developments to the track now that they are back in Europe. Alonso suffered a retirement in Malaysia in March, after losing his front wing when he tagged Vettel at the start, and finished only eighth in Bahrain last month when his rear wing DRS system failed to function. That problem has been solved and Ferrari have updates to the bodywork, floor and wings. “With any new component, the difficulty lies not so much in its development but in deciding whether or not it is working on track as well as we had hoped,” said Tombazis. “By Friday evening in Barcelona, our objective is to have a clear view on what we will take forward to use in the race.” There are more questions than answers at this stage of the season and McLaren, regular title challengers who ended last year with the fastest car and started 2013 well off the pace, have plenty to deal with. “I think returning to a circuit where we undertook two of the pre-season tests will give us a useful benchmark of our progress so far,” said McLaren’s 2009 champion Jenson Button in a preview of the race.

“I’m pragmatic about what we’ll discover next weekend. I’m hopeful that it’ll move us a step closer towards the destination.” Vettel has already won twice this season and his form in Bahrain looked ominous. Stopping that momentum is the big challenge. Kimi Raikkonen, now second overall for Lotus and chasing his 22nd successive points finish this weekend, is 10 points behind and only too aware of what needs to be done. “It’s going to be hard to catch Sebastian if he keeps taking good results so we need to start taking more points from him,” said the Finn. “It’s no secret that we want more speed from the car in qualifying. It’s so tight up there at the front and we really need to be on the first two rows to fight for victories every time.” That is more than ever the case in Barcelona, where 18 of the last 22 winners have started on pole and only onedriver - the now-retired Michael Schumacher - has ever won from anywhere other than the front row. Venezuelan Pastor Maldonado won last year for Williams, the team’s first grand prix success in nearly eight years, but lightning is unlikely to strike twice with the former world champions still chasing their first point of 2013.

Practice court beckons for Federer after shock defeat By Iain Rogers

The defending Madrid champion is still waiting for his first title of 2013 after defeat to Kei Nishikori

ROGER Federer vowed to get straight back on the practice court after the world number two was dumped out in the third round of the Madrid Open by Japan’s Kei Nishikori. Defending champion at the clay Masters event in the Spanish capital, Federer was playing his first tournament after a seven-week rest following defeat to Rafa Nadal in the quarter-finals at Indian Wells. The 31-year-old Swiss is increasingly limiting his appearances as his glittering career draws to an end and is one of only two players in the top 10 along with Czech Tomas Berdych without a title this year. Federer has won 76 tournaments since turning pro in 1998 and with one more he would equal John McEnroe’s 77 career titles and join the

American in third on the alltime ranking behind Jimmy Connors on 109 and Ivan Lendl with 94. After his 6-4 1-6 6-2 loss to 23-year-old Nishikori, Federer joked it was perhaps time for another seven-week layoff but said he felt like returning to the practice court immediately to prepare for next week’s Rome Masters. “I’ve been very successful here, so clearly I’m disappointed and wish I could have done better this week,” the former world number one told a news conference. “I was pretty upbeat after my second-round match (against Radek Stepanek). I thought I was in the tournament, I was playing pretty well. “In practice I was hitting the ball well so this comes as a bit of a disappointment for me. “It doesn’t change my mindset going forward. I’m going to go back to the practice

court, train hard and make sure I don’t have these kind of days anymore.” The highlight of the clay season is the French Open starting later this month and Federer said his setback in Madrid, where the conditions are much faster than in Paris, would not affect his preparations. “We’re not playing for the French Open. This is early. We’re weeks away from the French Open. “It’s nice to have the French Open as a tournament on the calendar but not everything is sacrificed for that. “For that particular player or for the media or the fans the French Open is the ultimate thing and the only thing they care about. Then clearly Madrid is the leadup tournament. “That’s not how I see it. For me, every tournament counts. So I’m as disappointed losing here as the French Open. There is no difference really.”

ALEX Ovechkin almost has it all but not quite. A multi-millionaire with a mountain of individual awards, his feats on the ice leave no doubt about his greatness as a hockey player. The rewards and plaudits for his achievements have been flowing for years and the Russian already has the keys to the United States capital, Washington DC, an honour he received in 2008 when he won the first of his two National Hockey League MVP awards. He is a five-time NHL All-Star and three-time winner of the NHL’s goalscoring title, including this season, and sporting success just seems to follow him everywhere. His mother won two Olympic gold medals in basketball for the Soviet Union and he is engaged to marry professional tennis player, Maria Kirilenko, who won a bronze medal in doubles at the London Olympics last year. But for all his personal achievements, there are two glaring omissions from Ovechkin’s CV. Unlike his mother and his fiancee, the 27-year-old has never won an Olympic gold medal, nor the Stanley Cup, ice hockey’s holy grail. For now, the Olympics will have to wait, at least until next year when Sochi hosts the Winter Games. The NHL is still negotiating with the IOC about whether it will let its players compete. Ovechkin insists he is going anyway. Winning the Stanley Cup is a more pressing matter. Ovechkin’s Washington Capitals are through to the playoffs for the sixth season in a row but the road ahead is littered with bumps and already looking treacherous. After winning their first two games in the Eastern Conference quarter-final with the New York Rangers, the series is suddenly tied at 2-2. The Rangers won the fourth game 4-3 at Madison Square Garden. “I think I really have to play better,” said Ovechkin, a lethal sniper who scored 32 goals in the shortened regular season, but was not among the scorers against New York. “They just put the puck in our net and made it a physical game. We knew it was going to be like that.” Ovechkin’s team mate, goaltender Braden Holtby, said the Caps still had a great chance to win and advance to the semi-finals. “It’s a three-game series now,” said Holtby, who made 30 saves. “And we still have home ice advantage.”

Sport Benfica’s dream season in peril at Porto Classico By Daniel Alvarenga

Barcelona need two points from their remaining four matches to wrest the title back from archrivals Real Madrid

Barca have La Liga crown in sight Catalan giants close in on ‘spectacular’ fourth league title in five years By Iain Rogers REAL Madrid have stubbornly refused to capitulate in recent weeks but La Liga leaders Barcelona finally have their fate in their own hands and can secure a 22nd La Liga crown with victory at Atletico Madrid tomorrow evening. Barca need two points from their remaining four matches to wrest the title back from their arch rivals, who have played a game more and need to win at Espanyol tonight to keep the title race alive. It would be the Catalan club’s fourth domestic league title in five years, an achievement that comes close to matching the ‘Dream Team’s’ four consecutive triumphs in the 1990s, and their first under new coach Tito Vilano-

va, who took over from Pep Guardiola at the end of last season. Atletico have already made sure of third place and a berth in the Champions League group stage. They will also be looking ahead to their King’s Cup final clash against Real in a week’s time but coach Diego Simeone said he and his players would not be distracted by the chance to ensure their city neighbours end the season without major silverware. “We cannot allow ourselves to be lose sight of the next game because we’ve never approached things differently, we need to focus on Barcelona,” Simeone told a news conference this week. “We know it will be a difficult game on Sunday but

the fans can get together and celebrate making it into the Champions League,” added the Argentine, who has transformed the team since taking over midway through last season. “It will be a challenge and we’ll see how the lads are feeling ahead of the game.” Real’s 6-2 win at home to Malaga on Wednesday trimmed the gap to Barca to eight points and although a win at Espanyol would cut the deficit to five, a Barca victory at the Calderon would give them an unassailable lead as Real will only have two games left and six points available. Atletico’s 3-1 win at Celta Vigo on Wednesday put them 14 points clear of fourthplaced Real Sociedad, who are well placed to secure a

place in Champions League qualifying ahead of their game at home to Granada on Monday. Another league title for Barca would help ease the pain of this month’s reverse to Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-finals, when they crashed to a 7-0 aggregate defeat, their worst result in European competition. Barca’s World Player of the Year Lionel Messi, who had to watch last week’s second leg from the bench because of injury, now appears back to full fitness and can add to his incredible tally of 46 league goals for the season at the Calderon. He is closing in on his record of 50 set last term and is 12 ahead of Real’s Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo in the scoring chart.

Barca may have Messi’s Argentine compatriot Javier Mascherano available again after he joined his team mates for part of Wednesday’s training session for the first time since damaging knee ligaments in the Champions League quarter-final first leg at Paris St Germain. Vilanova, who is recovering from throat cancer, arrived back from New York on Thursday where he has been having medical tests. “Winning a title is special and the league even more so,” midfielder Sergio Busquets told a news conference. “It’s the tournament that rewards consistency and the most important,” added the Spain international. “What’s more, it would be the fourth league title in five years and that would be spectacular.”

Nervous PSG target title at Lyon By Gregory Blachier

Ligue 1 leaders Paris St Germain will clinch their first title since 1994 if they win at Lyon

LIGUE 1 leaders Paris St Germain will clinch their first title since 1994 if they keep their nerve and win at third-placed Olympique Lyon tomorrow night. PSG could even be crowned before they take to the pitch if second-placed Olympique Marseille, seven points behind going into the weekend, lose against midtable Toulouse this evening. The wealthy capital side have topped the French league for weeks but have shown sign of nerves as they close in on their third title. Sporting director Leonardo has been provisionally suspended for allegedly barging into referee Alexandre Castro following last weekend’s frustrating home draw against Valenciennes, during which centre back Thiago Silva was dismissed. It was the third red card in two games for PSG, who had goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu banned for two matches after he took part in a mass brawl at Evian Thonon Gaillard the previous week. “We must win on Sunday to put an end to

it,” coach Carlo Ancelotti told his players at training this week. Thiago Silva, Sirigu and midfielder Marco Verratti are all suspended for the game at Lyon while Brazilian forward Lucas is doubtful with a rib problem. A PSG victory, with two matches remaining after the weekend, could also secure a second-spot finish for arch-rivals Marseille, who can go seven points ahead of Lyon if they beat Toulouse. The top two sides qualify for the Champions League group stage with the thirdplaced team going into the third preliminary round. Marseille are unbeaten since losing 2-0 at PSG in late February and can count on inform striker Andre-Pierre Gignac, who has scored nine of his 13 goals at home. “The Stade Velodrome has become my garden,” Gignac told the club’s website (www. om.net) after his double gave OM a 2-1 win over Bastia last weekend. “I struggled and suffered in this stadium but hopefully work and heart have helped me turn things around,” added Gignac, who scored only nine league goals in his first two seasons at Marseille.

BATTLE-WEARY Benfica know their season lies in the balance between memorable and disappointing when they walk on to the hostile Dragao stadium pitch for the likely title-decider against Porto tonight. The fierce rivals, two points apart and both undefeated in the Portuguese championship, have been neck-and-neck all year, upping the stakes for the Classico which has become the crunch moment of the season. While Benfica lead and could be crowned champions if they win, Porto have the emotional and physical edge with home advantage and nothing to play for but the league. Unlike their northern rivals, Benfica are still fighting on three fronts: the league, Wednesday’s Europa League final with Chelsea and the domestic cup final a week later. Porto are at full strength, while Benfica’s influential midfielders Nemanja Matic and Enzo Perez are both in doubt due to knocks. Defeat for Benfica on Saturday would most likely mean them giving away the league title and losing confidence for the two finals. Coach Jorge Jesus shrugged off talk of ‘dark clouds’ hanging over Benfica after a disappointing 1-1 home draw to Estoril on Monday meant they failed to retain a fourpoint cushion. “Dark clouds? That makes me laugh. Benfica are first and going to two finals. Few teams in the world have such a chance to win a treble at this stage,” Jesus told a news conference. “Nothing can erase what is already a brilliant season. Dark clouds would exist, yes, if we had not got to play matches like this.” A draw would suit Benfica who will host bottom-ofthe-table Moreirense in the last round. With the tickets almost sold out, Porto say they are ready to zero in on a third consecutive title. “If there was a vitamin needed to boost Porto physically there could have been nothing better that Benfica’s draw at Estoril,” former Porto captain Joao Pinto told Antena1 radio. “Porto have shown over time they follow through when the decisive hour comes and it will happen again this time.” Benfica have struggled to dent Porto’s domestic dominance in the last decade in which the northern side have won eight titles and the Lisbon club two.

Moyes: I couldn’t resist the lure of Manchester United Scot speaks fondly of his time at Everton DAVID Moyes says he was planning to stay at Everton next season but could not turn down the chance of becoming Manchester United manager. Moyes, 50, whose Everton contract expires this summer, agreed a six-year deal to replace Sir Alex Ferguson. The Scot was set to extend his 11-year stint at Goodison Park before United made their move. Asked if he had considered turning down United’s approach, Moyes said: “I have to be honest and say no.” He added: “I wasn’t planning on leaving. My contract was running out but we were planning for preseason. All we’ve ever done is keep planning. “I’ve got everything ready for next season and the chairman and everyone knows the route we need to take next season. This is a club competing to be in Europe.” Moyes, who did not answer direct questions about United, admits he would understand any negativity from Everton fans when he is in charge of his final home game against West Ham at Goodison Park tomorrow. But he maintains he will be approaching the game like any other in his spell on Merseyside.

Omonia aim to put a dampener on APOEL’s title celebrations By Nemanja Bjedov

A video grab taken from Sky Sports News of David Moyes’ press conference yesterday He said: “I hope they react the way I first stepped in the door. If they don’t, I can understand because I’m a fan myself. “They support their team but I’ll stand in the same position and keep everything focused. The big thing is that we finish the season with as many points as we can and there’s still an outside chance of Europe.”

Manchester United moved for Moyes after Ferguson recommended his fellow Scot as his successor. Moyes says he will happily do the same for Everton and has already discussed the matter with chairman Bill Kenwright. He said: “I’ve spoken to the chairman. He asked me and I’ll help as much as I possibly can.

“It has been very difficult. I have great respect for the chairman and have a great relationship with him. He is a really good guy. We had a difficult meeting on Wednesday but he totally understood. “Walter Smith [Moyes’ predecessor] recommended me for the job and if there’s anything I can do to help Bill Kenwright and Everton

then that’s what I’ll do.” Everton have only finished outside the top-half of the table in two of Moyes’ 10 full seasons in charge and he is proud of the progress the club have made over the past decade. “I’m disappointed to be leaving such a great club. The club has been such a great part of my life,” he added.

Lampard favours Mourinho return By Matt McGeehan and Simon Peach

Lampard was an integral member of the side that enjoyed so much success in Mourinho’s three years in charge

FRANK Lampard welcomed the possibility of Jose Mourinho returning to Chelsea on a day when Rafael Benitez declined to guarantee the midfielder a place in the Europa League final starting XI. The 34-year-old’s contract expires this summer and ongoing uncertainty over his future means Wednesday’s Europa League final with Benfica in Amsterdam could be the penultimate match of his 12-year stay at Stamford Bridge. Real Madrid boss Mourinho is widely expected to be named Benitez’s successor this summer - returning after nearly six years away - in a switch Lampard would welcome. Lampard was an integral member of the side that enjoyed so much success in Mourinho’s three years in charge until his September

2007 departure, but is uncertain if a second coming of the ‘Special One’ would mean his Blues stay is extended. “I’ve always said that I wanted to spend all of my career here so I think everyone knows that,” Lampard said. “I honestly don’t know (whether Mourinho’s return would help my cause). “But he is certainly one of the greatest if not the greatest manager in world football. I think it would be a great thing for the club. “We have got two weeks that will decide whether our season has been a successful one or not. That is the main focus.” Benitez has confirmed Lampard will start today’s Premier League clash at Aston Villa as Chelsea seek to confirm a topfour place and Champions League football next term. But the former Liverpool boss intimated sentiment will not be a factor in his selection for the Europa League final and offered no assurances

that Lampard and captain John Terry will play at the Amsterdam ArenA. Defender Terry missed the 2012 Champions League final victory through suspension and Lampard hopes to surpass Bobby Tambling’s 202goal club goalscoring record before the end of the season. Benitez said: “The only player that I can guarantee who will play against Aston Villa is Lampard. The final, I don’t know. “I haven’t decided the team yet.” Benitez again backed Lampard to claim the two goals needed to break the record and hopes it can be accomplished against Villa - to make his final team selection more straightforward. Benitez added: “If he can score against Aston Villa it will be easier for me in the last two games. “I will do what I have to do to win games and if at the same time I can help Frank, I will do it.”

NEW champions APOEL will get their hands on the league trophy after the match with Omonia tomorrow afternoon (6pm) at the GSP Stadium in Nicosia. As they prepare for the celebrations, their arch-rivals are in need of three points in order to secure a place in next season’s Europa league qualifiers. “We have a very important match ahead of us against APOEL. They are preparing to celebrate the championship and the atmosphere among their players is probably very festive, but we have a job to do as we definitely need a win,” said Omonia coach Toni Savevski. “Regardless of how it may sound, I expect a very tricky encounter since their job is done and they will be more psychologically comfortable than us. However, I hope that we will be focused enough to secure the win and a spot in the Europa League for next season,” he added. The President of the Cyprus Football Association, Kostas Koutsokoumnis, will present APOEL with the championship trophy, the club’s 22nd title. “In order to play in Europe we need to get among the top three teams in the playoffs and so far we have managed to stay in contention by sticking together and improving our performances. Ten years from now what will be remembered is who succeeded, while who played well will only be a distant memory. It is sad that Omonia can only fight to get a European spot and not the title, but this is our reality this season,” concluded Savevski whose side are currently in second place with 63 points. AEK, who are fourth with 61 points, host Anorthosis who hold a solitary point advantage over them in third, also tomorrow afternoon. Both coaches have no new injury worries ahead of the match in which a victory for either of the teams would all but guarantee them a European presence in 2013/2014. Elsewhere, this afternoon in Group 2, AEL take on Enosis Neon Paralimni at the Tsirion Stadium in Limassol, while in the relegation group Alki face Ethnikos Achnas. Bottom side Nea Salamina host Olympiakos Nicosia in what is a crucial match for both sides in their fight to avoid the drop. Alki top the relegation group with 32 points, while only two points separate Ethnikos Achnas in second from Nea Salamina in the relegation zone. Tomorrow afternoon in Group 2, Doxa Katokopia meet Apollon Limassol at the Ammochostos Stadium in Larnaca.

Kompany wary of Wigan in ‘tough’ Cup final By Andy Hampson MANCHESTER City captain Vincent Kompany has warned that the FA Cup final against Wigan will be much tougher than many think. City are odds-on favourites to claim the trophy at Wembley this evening, with Wigan’s preparations having been overshadowed by their battle against relegation. Yet, despite the Latics being in deep trouble at the bottom of the Premier League, Kompany rates them highly. Wigan outplayed City for large spells of their meeting at the Etihad Stadium last

month - only to lose to a late Carlos Tevez goal - and Kompany thinks they have been one of the season’s toughest opponents. That is some compliment from the skipper of a side that has faced two Chamague semi-finalists pions League sia Dortmund and in Borussia drid this term. Real Madrid y, Kompany, d the who lifted famous FA Cup trophy in 2011 (right), said: e “They are one of the more difficult

sides we have played this season. “You can see it’s a team that doesn’t fear keeping possession. “When it’s going well for them they are a very d difficult team to play against against. We have to b be carefu ful. “W “When th they p played at E Etihad, th they were re really good an and caused us a lot of tr trouble. “ “But we m managed

it really well in the end. We didn’t concede and we won the game. “I think they are a good team and if people think they will be easy then it is a mistake.” As for Wigan, manager Roberto Martinez looked forward to the big day. “There’s nothing like winning major titles to get huge respect and that’s very important to us,” he said. “This is another huge step for this football club which has defied the odds to reach the final. “It’s the oldest competition in world football and a win for Wigan would be a fitting finale to what the FA Cup stands for.”

Old Trafford prepares to give Ferguson emotional sendoff Retirement overshadowing presentation of Premier League trophy to the champions By Justin Palmer

E

MOTIONS will be running high at Old Trafford tomorrow for Alex Ferguson’s last home game as Manchester United manager with his retirement overshadowing the presentation of the Premier League trophy to the champions. Ferguson will take his seat in the dugout for the final time with Swansea City the visitors for his home farewell after the Scot announced on Wednesday that he will step down at the end of the season following more than 26 trophy-laden years at the helm. Fans unable to get a ticket will be able to line the streets and toast the Scot on Monday evening when United embark on an opentop bus parade through the city. After that, Ferguson will bow out at West Bromwich Albion on the final day of the season. While there is nothing at stake from Swansea’s visit, United having long since sealed a 20th English title and their opponents set for a top-10 finish, the battle for the remaining two Champions League places and one relegation spot is guaranteed another twist or two in the dying embers of the season. Chelsea (69 points), Arsenal (67) and Tottenham Hotspur (66) remain in the mix, with last season’s European champions Chelsea missing the chance to all but guarantee a top-four finish when they were twice

Take a bow, Sir Alex: the legendary Manchester United manager will take his seat in the Old Trafford dugout for his home farewell against Swansea pegged back by Spurs in a 2-2 draw on Wednesday. They get another chance when they visit resurgent Aston Villa in today’s early kick-off (2.45pm), Paul Lambert’s side having revenge firmly on their minds after an 8-0 mauling by Chelsea in December. Spurs visit Stoke on Sunday (3.30pm) while Arsenal,

not in action at the weekend, face relegation-threatened Wigan Athletic at the Emirates on Tuesday. Wigan’s build-up to their first FA Cup final appearance against Manchester City today (7.15pm) would have been far more relaxed had they managed to hold on to a 2-1 lead against Swansea on Tuesday.

Instead, Roberto Martinez’s side imploded to lose 3-2 and their perennial Houdini act of escaping the trapdoor is now in serious jeopardy. Wigan’s defeat, which kept them third from bottom on 35 points, will have been greeted by relief by the teams above them with Newcastle, Norwich

and Sunderland holding a three-point cushion with two games to play. Southampton, on 39, and Aston Villa and Fulham with 40 are not yet assured of safety. One win from their last seven games has plunged Newcastle into a dogfight that has left fans contemplating the spectre of a

second relegation in five seasons after they were demoted in 2009. Newcastle visit alreadyrelegated QPR tomorrow (5pm) having produced an improved display in a 0-0 draw at West Ham United last weekend. After conceding 10 goals in three games, including six in the embarrassing 6-0 home rout by Liverpool, a clean sheet owed much to the return of captain and centre back Fabricio Coloccini from injury after a 12match absence. Norwich host West Brom (5pm) while Sunderland welcome Southampton (5pm) for a game manager Paolo Di Canio has described as like a ‘Champions League final for us.’ Sunderland battled back with 10 men to take a point at home against Stoke on Monday but will be without Craig Gardner who was sent off 10 minutes before halftime, the club’s second red card in successive games after Stephane Sessegnon’s dismissal in the 6-1 capitulation at Aston Villa. Di Canio has urged his side to control their aggression. “It is obvious that I love passion, I love the heart, but if we are going to improve it is obvious we have to handle our aggression. I hope we are not going to make other mistakes.”
