CBC boss: I see no reason to quit Demetriades says no problem with government but Georgiades not happy with pace of bank reforms By George Psyllides

C

ENTRAL Bank of Cyprus (CBC) Governor Panicos Demetriades said yesterday he had no intention of resigning, as a rift with the government appeared to persist over the way he was handling the island’s banking crisis. “There is no such issue,” Demetriades told a news conference. “I said it in the past and I would like to close this matter. As the CBC we did everything possible … to avoid much worse, catastrophic scenarios, which we actually had before us.” In exchange for a €10 billion bailout from the eurozone and International Monetary Fund, Cyprus had been forced to close Laiki, its second biggest bank, and restructure its biggest, Bank of Cyprus (BoC), including imposing losses on deposits over €100,000. Commenting on the CBC’s reportedly strained relationship with the new government, Demetriades said:”There is no problem as far as we are concerned. We would like to see respect of the independence of the Central Bank, which is very important and stems from Cyprus’

obligations to the EU.” Despite the CBC boss’ protestations that everything was fine, the government however appeared to be unhappy yesterday over the delay in the BoC restructuring process. “I would not say I am satisfied with the progress at the BoC,” Finance Minister Harris Georgiades told state radio earlier yesterday. The government did not want the process to drag on until September, as the CBC suggested at some point, the minister said, adding that Demetriades had pledged to wrap up procedures last week, on May 2. “We think we are already late,” Georgiades said, though acknowledging there were practical and legal issues in the way. The minister said cooperation with the CBC boss “could have been much better.” Demetriades and Georgiades met President Nicos Anastasiades yesterday at the presidential palace for two hours but no statements were made afterwards. The CBC chief said there was no problem from the regulator’s side. “Of course we will cooperate but always within the

FLOODING IN NICOSIA AFTER HEAVY THUNDERSTORM

A FLASH thunderstorm lasting some two hours swept through the capital yesterday afternoon, flooding dozens of basements and trapping motorists in their cars. The downpour of rain and hail started around 2.30pm and was most severe in the suburbs of Strovolos, Dasoupolis and Lakatamia. The Fire Department responded to around 80 calls, a spokeswoman said. Most concerned flooded households

and basements, while firemen rushed to the aid of three persons trapped in their cars from gushing waters on roads. In the Sopaz area, firemen arrived in the nick of time to extract a driver just as his vehicle was about to be swept into a nearby river. The water level had reached the window of his vehicle, reports said. No injuries were reported. The Fire Department also removed debris from a number of locations after sev-

eral trees were felled by strong winds. The Meteorological Service said the area around the island is currently under a low-pressure system. For the next three days, the service forecasts scattered showers and possible flash storms, mostly in mountain areas and the interior. Temperatures will be near normal for this time of the year, ranging from 20C in the mountains to 28C inland (Christos Theodorides)

WHAT THE MAIL SAID 35 years ago, Friday May 10, 1978 The Cyprus problem dominated the first day of the talks between Chancellor Schmidt of Germany and Turkey’s Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit in Bonn. Schmidt said Bonn did not consider the US arms ban very helpful. The Federal government shared the opinion of President Carter that the embargo should be ended, the Chancellor said at a joint press conference. Schmidt pointed out that he had also discussed the Cyprus question with visiting Greek Prime Minister Karamanlis last week.

45 years ago, Sunday May 10, 1968 There were reports in Nicosia yesterday that talks between Greek and Turkish Cypriot representatives may start at the end of this month. Ankara Radio, said a middle road might be found on the question of venue, which is the only procedural obstacle blocking the start of the talks.

Home Construction companies respond to crisis with special deals

‘We don’t want to be a burden on Cyprus but...’ Kurdish refugees from Syria camp outside interior ministry seeking the right to work By Maria Gregoriou AROUND 150 Kurdish refugees from Syria have been camped outside the interior ministry since April 29, waiting for an answer for their application for subsidiary protection. Subsidiary protection is given to refugees who have fled their country in a time of war but who are expected to return home after the situation is more peaceful. A large tent and a picnic table have been set-up outside the ministry. Sheets have been spread out on the ground under trees as beds. Some children were running around in the parking area as their parents continued to wait for an answer from the ministry for the eleventh day. The Kurds and their families say they are stuck in a hopeless situation. Although they are forced to remain in Cyprus, they are not allowed to work because they do not have residence permits. They have been told by police to move on but they are determined to stay outside the ministry for as long as it takes as it is a matter of life or death for them, they said. “We have been here day and night for eleven days and still we have received no answer. We just want the protection that is allowed to us, just like other refugees in other European countries under the EU,” said Kamal Shaykih, 56. “The first time we approached the ministry they asked us how many Kurds are seeking protection and we managed to get a list of 192 names. This was a year and a half ago and we didn’t

get a reply yet.” Shaykih said the refugees approached the UN on March 10 to help them leave Cyprus and find refuge in another country. “We do not want to be a load on the Cypriot people. We understand that Cyprus is going through a crisis of their own right now and we do not want to make the situation worse but we must also protect our families and support each other in this struggle for our rights,” he said. The UN told them they would receive an answer within ten days but they never did so they decided to camp outside the ministry. “We just want a yes or no answer,” Shaykih added. Shaykih himself is legally allowed to work in Cyprus but he chose to camp with his fellow Kurds to support them. Ramie Mamo, 46, a mother of three said some of the refugees had tried to leave Cyprus. “There is a family here who sold everything they had and tried to leave but the husband was arrested at the airport. Now his wife and children are on the streets without a home or anything to eat. The government has left us without any choices,” she said. “I am sunburned. It doesn’t matter. I sleep on the ground and that doesn’t matter. We have been through much worse and we will be patient until we get protection. Even if we get a negative answer, we will not leave until it becomes a positive one,” Mamo said. Another woman who said she has been in Cyprus for 18 years said she had had both of her children on the island. “Now that one is 17, he got a paper from the government to go for his army service,”

said 46-year-old Forgae Nalla. Interior ministry permanent secretary Andreas Assiotos said he had spoken to the representatives of the Kurds and explained to them that they were allowed to work in the agricultural sector. “We have asked the labour ministry if there are jobs in these areas, and we have been told there are,” he said. “I know they are asking for protection but protection from what? We are not threatening them. I believe that they are asking for a permanent residency in Cyprus and to have equal rights as Cypriot citizens to work in all sectors. With the situation being as it as and more Cypriots becoming unemployed, we cannot accept people coming from Syria due to war to work in all sectors. Maybe they do not want to work in these types of (agricultural) jobs,” Assiotis said. He said there was no problem with the Kurdish people staying in Cyprus until the situation in Syria calms down. “We understand their situation and we will not kick them out of the country,” he said. However the Kurdish group says they will go on a hunger strike as of Monday if they do not receive an answer from the ministry. “Some Kurds living in Cyprus gave in an application to work in Cyprus and were rejected, others are not even able to apply. Others have had their nationality taken away from them because they come from the area where the border between Iraq and Syria is, so if they go back to Syria they will be imprisoned or even murdered. These people have no where left to turn

A woman prepares food at the camp and are living very desperate lives,” Anthoula Papadopoulou, a KISA steering committee member, said. Papadopoulou said most countries in the EU provide subsidiary protection to Kurds but for some reason the Cypriot government is ignoring this. Some of these people have been here for many years and can speak Greek very well. Their children were born and raised here and they ask to be given Greek names so they can fit in and even go to the army,” she added. Kamiran Muhamad a 33year-old father of four, committed suicide on April 17 after being denied asylum. He had fled Syria three months before that. KISA’s Doros Polycarpou

(Christos Theodorides)

said the implementation of the decision to provide Kurds with subsidiary protection would not affect Cyprus to a large extent as 95 per cent of all funding would be covered by the EU. “The government has only given the Kurds the status of a visitor for humanitarian reasons but this does not really give them any rights. They are told that they can work in Cyprus but companies are not allowed to employ people from third countries,” he said. KISA has prepared a petition in Greek in support of the Kurds, which is due to be issued. An English version will also go out. It also urges people to offer material and moral support to the families outside the ministry.

IN RESPONSE to the widespread financial crisis on the island ten construction companies, in co-operation with estate agents Sabbianco Properties, are offering flats at lower prices. The campaign ‘Today We Can’ began on Friday, May 3 and will go on for a month. Advertising has already appeared on billboards and on Sigma TV in the form of short advert spots. “Towards the end of the month we will speak with the ten companies and see if they want to repeat the campaign next month too as we have had good response already from interested parties,” owner and general manager of Sabbiano Properties, Andreas Andreou told the Cyprus Mail. According to a statement from Sabbianco, ‘Today We Can’ will attempt to alter the status quo and the negativity with which Cypriot’s are being bombarded with every day. “Construction companies are contributing by offering properties at exceptional prices in an attempt to help prospective buyers realise one of the main basic human needs,” the statement said. Andreou added that during these difficult times of persistent doubt and insecurity they were offering security and a safe investment, something which is not on offer elsewhere in the market. The companies involved are T&A Cyview, Savva Home, Hanadjias & Zenios, Stekas & Symeou, Frangopoulos, G.S.K. Herodotou, Costas G Constantinou, Sacoco, Domopoli and A.i.k. Kayias. New two-bedroom flats, which usually go for around €130,000 are now being sold for €105,000 according to Andreou who is a registered estate agent, number 610.A.A330. “We are hoping that at the end of the month we will be able to add more companies to the campaign,” Andreou concluded.

Home CYPRUS TODAY Talks to unify football said to be stalled TALKS to unify football on the island for the first time since 1955 appear to have broken down between the Cyprus Football Association (CFA) and their Turkish Cypriot counterparts after a scheduled meeting at FIFA headquarters in March never took place. Head of the CFA, Costakis Koutsokoumnis and head of the Turkish Cypriot Football Association (TCFA), Hasan Sertoglu met at the beginning of the year in an attempt to see an all-island league for the first time since 1955. The two associations were due to meet at FIFA headquarters in March to try and finalise a deal, but no such meeting took place, indicating a stalemate had been reached during talks. Reports claim that insiders had confirmed that the CFA and the CTFA, which is not officially recognised by FIFA, are still discussing versions of the draft and that no date for a meeting with FIFA has yet been fixed. It is understood that the CFA presented its version of the text and that the Turkish Cypriots sent back a counter-text. The next reply from the Greek side is still being awaited.

Top UN official in Cyprus UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Herve Ladsous yesterday met with President Nicos Anastasiades. After the meeting, Ladsous noted this was his first trip to Cyprus since taking up his duties. He added that UNFICYP “is achieving a lot around the buffer zone” and has worked for many years to build confidence and solve all the daily difficulties that the communities face on both sides. Asked about suggestions last year to reduce the size of the peacekeeping force in Cyprus, he said: “I think UNFICYP serves a very important purpose, they have an important mission and they are doing it with determination, with imagination and I think they enjoy the support of the Security Council and that’s what counts.”

More trees being cut down illegally THE CABINET is proposing a bill to regulate illegal logging, which is expected to reach parliament soon. According to a statement from the office of the Environment Commissioner the proposal was made at the urging of the Green Party. “The economic crisis has increased the demand for firewood for heating purposes and this has increased illegal logging from forests and private property. This problem is extremely serious and we must solve it by taking immediate measures,” the statement said. Agriculture Minister, Nicos Kouyialis, said the bill was in the hands of the legal services and when examined it will be returned to the cabinet for approval, and then to parliament for a vote.

Attacked while walking his dog A 57-YEAR-OLD man from Limassol reported to police that while he was walking his dog at around 9pm on Wednesday, he was attacked by a stray dog which injured both him and his pet, and was then subsequently struck by someone who appeared to be the owner of the stray. According to reports, the man began calling for help during the attack by the stray and was approached by five people. One of those men struck him in the face and the arms before taking off with the stray dog. The 57-year-old went to Limassol General Hospital where he was given first aid and released. He had bruises on his hand and his nose. He took his dog to a vet where it was established that the pet had sustained bruises to the neck and other parts of its body.

Former Finance Minister Kikis Kazamias prepares to be quizzed on the economy yesterday

(Christos Theodorides)

‘Greek haircut was lesser of two evils’ Kazamias back in front of committee of inquiry By Elias Hazou EX-FINANCE minister Kikis Kazamias said yesterday he was not aware whether former President Demetris Christofias either sought or received guidance before sanctioning a 2011 euro-area decision to write down Greek debt – a pivotal moment now widely acknowledged as having broken the back of Cyprus’ two largest banks. Kazamias said that during his stint no governmental meeting was held in 2011 or subsequently to discuss specifically the impact on the economy from the Greek PSI (Private Sector Involvement), also known as the Greek ‘haircut’. Testifying before the committee of inquiry that is looking into Cyprus’ near financial collapse, Kazamias said that to the best of his knowledge “no special meeting took place to discuss this topic ex-

clusively.” He was responding to a question as to whether following the Greek haircut he informed the then president that the decision entailed disastrous consequences for the Cypriot economy. Kazamias was equally unaware if Christofias, having decided to rubberstamp the Greek haircut, had asked his eurozone counterparts for trade-offs to mitigate the impact on Cypriot banks, heavily exposed to Greek government bonds and private debt. The former economy chief went on to say that, in his view, it would have been next to impossible for Cyprus to negotiate the Greek haircut, given the urgency of the matter at the time. “Any delay in taking a decision might have led Greece to a disorderly default…the president had no choice,” said Kazamias. Under the circumstances, the decision to go along with the Greek debt write-down

was the correct one; the alternative was far worse, as it would have meant the collapse of the Greek economy, leading the Cypriot banks to total bankruptcy. “It was a case of the lesser of two evils,” he noted. Kazamias was quizzed on comments made by European Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs Olli Rehn, who on Wednesday censured Cyprus for taking too long to ask for financial assistance. But Kazamias sought to discredit Rehn: “Anyone can say whatever they want after the fact,” he remarked. Sticking to his guns, Kazamias reiterated that after speaking at length with Rehn in November 2011, the European Commission was satisfied with the fiscal steps Cyprus had taken and shortly thereafter it removed the island from a list of five countries under probation. On January 13, 2012, ratings

agency Standard and Poor’s slashed Cyprus’ sovereign ratings to ‘junk’; Kazamias repeated yesterday that the reason for the downgrade were the banks, not government finances. Kazamias served as finance minister from August 2011 to March 2012, when he resigned citing health reasons. His term coincided with the summer 2011 decision for the Greek PSI or ‘haircut’. The first PSI agreed in July 2011 called for a 21 per cent reduction in the the Net Present Value of the Greek bonds. The PSI was finalised in February 2012, when euroarea finance ministers finalised a second bailout package for Greece, which had the effect of raising the level of the ‘haircut’ from the initial 21 per cent to around 70 per cent. It’s estimated that the Greek PSI’s hit on Laiki and Bank of Cyprus was in the order of a little over €4bn.

Previous government hired over 5,000 people in four years FROM 1995 to date, the number of people employed in the broader public sector has increased yearly by about 2 per cent, an official yesterday told the panel that is probing the circumstances that led to Cyprus’ near financial collapse. George Georgiou, director of the Statistical Service, said also that over the years public-sector employees have accounted for 18 to 19 per cent of the country’s total workforce. The panel is currently focusing on fiscal actions and decisions in the past few years and their impact on government finances. According to data furnished by Georgiou, in 2007 the broader public sector (civil service, local authorities and semi-governmental organisations) employed 66,150 persons, or 18 per cent

of the total workforce; in 2010, the number rose significantly to 71,529 persons or 19 per cent; and in 2011, there were 71,553 people employed. Although in 2012 the figure dipped to 70,268 persons, this accounted for 19.2 per cent of the total workforce at the time. In 2010, the then AKEL administration stated its intention to slash the size of the civil service by 1,000 persons a year by 2013, in a bid to contain the payroll. Yesterday Georgiou did not provide a year-by-year breakdown for the number of civil servants, but cited 2012, when 33,784 people were employed by the central government. The official has been asked to re-appear before the panel to provide more detailed data.

Home Cyprus needs to invest in oil and gas education CYPRUS needs to invest in education in the field of oil and gas exploitation if it is to become a strong energy centre in the Eastern Mediterranean. This was the message conveyed by a workshop held yesterday in Nicosia on developing the oil and gas sector with a focus on education. The workshop was jointly organised by the British High Commission, the School of Engineering of the University of Cyprus (UCY) and the British Council. UCY Rector Constantinos Christofides said that he would use the results of the workshop “to shape its agenda for exploiting the new opportunities in the hydrocarbon sector through educational, research and services programmes. “A decade ago we started the engineering school, which now has four departments, four research centres and two inter-departmental graduate programmes on energy, one of those is a Masters programme in Petroleum Engineering starting in September with 25 students,” he said. ‘We formed an international committee to advise us in creating a new department, with focus in chemical and petroleum engineering. The research activity in the Engineering School is remarkable, supported by external funding in excess of €19 million. In appreciation of its good results we work hard on securing funding for its new building at the campus to start the construction early next year”. British High Commissioner Matthew Kidd said that skills and knowledge were very important for a country like Cyprus, which wanted to have a successful energy sector. He said the UK had experience in developing knowledge on the oil and gas industry and expressed the readiness of Britain to offer its knowledge and help to Cyprus as a sign of solidarity especially now as the country was going through a difficult period. Advisor to the Foreign and Commonwealth office and Energy Specialist Angus Miller, in his address, said that Cyprus had the opportunity to develop as a hub both for hydrocarbon recovery and processing and for providing the training and education that would sustain the industry. “In short, to become the local provider of skills with worldwide application”, he concluded. Permanent Secretary of the commerce ministry Stelios Chimonas speaking on behalf of Minister Giorgos Lakkotrypis, said that according to a study by the Human Resources Development Authority, it was anticipated that more than 5,000 jobs would be created in the hydrocarbons sector by 2019. “Obviously, all of these jobs will have to be filled by the right professionals, with the right skills and education,” he said.

CBC boss: I will not quit Demetriades says 96 per cent of bank deposits were not affected by the haircut (continued from front page) framework of respecting the institutions.” On the delays concerning the BoC, Demetriades said the administrator would go when a suitable person was found – “I hope within the next days” – to take over as CEO. Restructuring the lender would take more time however, because it depended on a string of lawsuits filed by depositors against the decision to seize their cash. The government is also keen to see more capital controls lifted as they were not conducive to the recovery of the economy. The restrictions were deemed necessary to prevent a run on banks after the raid on deposits. Controls have since been relaxed but more was needed for the situation to return to normalcy. Demetriades said the CBC shared the government’s views on lifting the restrictions as soon as possible, but the possible effects on bank liquidity were a concern. “However, we must always take into account the liquidity and the effects these measures would have

Central Bank Governor Panicos Demetriades at his news conference yesterday on deposit outflows,” he said. “Certainly, the restrictions have not helped the recovery of the economy, but they are necessary until the depositors’ trust is restored.” Demetriades said most of the depositors who lost money at BoC were from overseas and that Cypriots had not been hit as hard as might have been expected. “Seventy per cent of the value of deposits concerned overseas residents, leaving Cypriot households and businesses unaffected to a greater extent than was possibly expected,” he said. Demetriades said overall 96 per cent of deposits in Cyprus were unaffected by losses on larger accounts

FUNERAL ANNOUNCEMENT

Hagop Keheyan passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 7th, 2013 aged 90. A funeral service will take place on Saturday May 11, 2013 at 3.00pm at the Sourp Asdvadzadzin Armenian Apostolic Church in Nicosia and the family will receive condolences at the Church after the service. Hagop was dear husband of Stella, father of Garo and Belinda and grandfather of Stephanie and Olivia. No flowers please. All donations will be gratefully accepted by the Cyprus Anti-Cancer Society.

required by the eurozone in exchange for aid. “Certainly what happened was very painful for many depositors, particularly those who did not have loans (which were netted against deposits). But 96 per cent of deposits were not affected,” Demetriades said. The

CBC chief sought to strike a positive note, stressing that despite the hardship, the bailout agreement had averted catastrophic scenarios like the collapse of systemic banks or the disorderly bankruptcy of the state. “We avoided the liquida-

(Christos Theodorides) tion of the affected banks, an action that would not only have affected all depositors but also borrowers, who would be forced to pay off all their loans,” Demetriades said. The governor warned however that short-term prospects remained gloomy.

Home Nadir renounces British citizenship in hopes of transfer to Turkey JAILED Turkish Cypriot tycoon Asil Nadir has renounced his British citizenship in order to return to Turkey, reported Turkish Cypriot daily Afrika yesterday, According to the paper, the Turkish Cypriot businessman, who is currently in Belmarsh Prison in the UK, is now one step closer to returning to Turkey after being sentenced to ten years in jail last August by a British court

after being found guilty of stealing £28.8 million from Polly Peck and its shareholders. Afrika reported that Turkish Justice Minister Sadullah Ergin gave instructions to the Turkish ambassador in London to assist proceedings for Nadir to be transferred from Britain to Turkey. As part of the effort, Nadir was asked to renounce his citizenship and hand over his British passport.

Last February, the Daily Mail reported that Nadir who was ordered by a UK court to pay back £5 million of the money he stole from his Polly Peck business empire, came up with the money despite telling British judges he was broke. According to the Daily Mail, the payment paved the way for him to secure a prisoner transfer to Turkey, from where reports sug-

gest he will be allowed to return to the occupied north, where he will be put under ‘house arrest’. Nadir fled from the UK to northern Cyprus in 1993 but returned in 2010 to face trial and ‘clear his name’. Polly Peck, a leading stock exchange conglomerate, collapsed in 1990 after Nadir stole money which he sent abroad through a complex series of companies.

Pressure mounts for new round of talks Kasoulides: no negotiations can begin until the autumn By Stefanos Evripidou FOREIGN MINISTER Ioannis Kasoulides will today meet US Secretary of State John Kerry in Washington a day after meeting the U.N. chief in New York. The meeting with Kerry comes at a time when key players in the international community are talking up the chances of pushing for a Cyprus solution, with the development of the energy sector in the Eastern Mediterranean clearly in the back of decisionmakers’ minds. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met Kasoulides in the very early hours of yesterday, local time, after the foreign minister’s plane got stuck at a New York airport for three hours due to bad weather. According to a UN statement, the two discussed the prospects for a resumption of peace talks on the island. Speaking after the meeting, Kasoulides said: “There is an understanding that the talks cannot commence earlier than the autumn.” The minister said he passed on three messages on behalf of President Nicos Anastasia-

des, namely the need to show understanding and patience due to the financial crisis in Cyprus which is taking up all the government’s time and resources; the fact the president is not bound by all previous decisions made in the talks; and, the need to improve trust and confidence between the two communities. Regarding the latter, Kasoulides referred to a longstanding proposal for the fenced-off part of Famagusta to be handed over to its legitimate owners before any other agreement was reached. In exchange, the Turkish Cypriot community could use the port of Famagusta for direct trade under the supervision of the EU, while Cyprus would explore the possibility of unfreezing some chapters blocked in Turkey’s EU accession talks. “It’s a win-win situation for all sides,” said Kasoulides. Asked about confidence building measures in relation to the exploitation of hydrocarbons in Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ), Kasoulides said issues concerning natural gas were independent of any efforts to solve the Cyprus problem. “It is indeed an incentive to solve the Cyprus problem.

Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides at his meeting with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in New York However, it is under the exclusive jurisdiction of the legal state, which is the Republic of Cyprus,” he said. After the meeting, Kasoulides departed for Washington where he is due to meet Kerry, the leadership of the Greek Issue Group at the US Congress, the Foreign Affairs Committees of the House and Senate, the National Security Advisor to Jo Biden, and the leadership of the AmericanIsraeli Lobby. He will also speak at the Brookings Institution. Politis newspaper yesterday reported that the Cyprus foreign ministry was surprised to receive a US request to set up a meeting between Kasoulides and Kerry in May, much earlier than originally expected. The paper cited diplomatic sources saying the US was taking a much more proactive approach in the region, which Kerry has visited three times in the last two months. According to Turkish media reports, US diplomats have

met repeatedly with Turkish officials to discuss a range of issues. Today’s meeting is seen by some commentators as an extension of this active approach, with the US keen to ensure the energy sector’s development in the Eastern Mediterranean plays out in an advantageous manner. With the competing interests of Turkey, Egypt, Lebanon, Israel, Syria and Cyprus all in the mix, the chances of a flare up in the region could not easily be ignored. Given long-standing American support for Israeli interests, and the involvement of US-based Noble Energy in Cyprus’ EEZ, as well as a close reliance on Turkey to ensure its security interests in the region are met, the US is in a good position to play a background role of mediator in the Cyprus-Turkey dispute over natural gas deposits in the Eastern Mediterranean. How much this will be con-

nected to the nuts and bolts of the Cyprus peace talks remains to be seen. Perhaps indicative of the general feeling within the international community, EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn told a European Parliament finance committee in Brussels on Wednesday that he regretted the lack of decisive progress in the peace talks. “The reunification of the island would give a major boost to the economic and social development of Cyprus,” he said during a discussion of the economic crisis and subsequent ‘bailout’ of Cyprus. “Now it is indeed high time to revitalise the process leading toward the reunification of Cyprus,” he added. This came on the heels of another comment by NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen who said the Cyprus problem should be solved in order to advance

NATO-EU cooperation. Rasmussen said a number of issues remained at risk as a result of the island’s division, referring specifically to oil and natural gas drilling. After a solution, hydrocarbon exploration could begin, he said, adding that political obstacles regarding NATOEU relations would also be removed. Commenting on the NATO chief’s statement, Kasoulides said he would do well not to make such statements, as they could only lead to extending the time needed to solve the Cyprus problem, while also keeping NATO-EU problems unsolved. Meanwhile, Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan is due in Washington next week for an official visit. According to Turkish daily Sabah, Erdogan is going to the US with five messages, one of which is that Turkey will not accept allowing the marketing of the island’s natural gas to go to Russia.

‘Boosting TV ratings at the expense of a child’ slammed Cameras swoop in on evicted grandparents and 10-year-old By Peter Stevenson CHILD Commissioner Leda Koursoumba yesterday called on the media to act with more responsibility and critical judgement when broadcasting stories of any kind about children. The comments came after TV channels aired news stories about a ten-year-old Romanian girl and her grandparents who were evicted by their landlord on Easter Sunday and forced to sleep on the street. Koursoumba, who was speaking at a press conference yesterday with Cyprus Radio and Television Broadcasting Authority Director General, Neophytos Epaminontas, had previously criticised the police’s handling of the situation and has asked the justice and labour ministers for a report on the incident. “Due to the current crisis I am sure we will witness many incidents where children and families will be put out on the streets, and coverage of such incidents is welcomed when it is done correctly,” Koursoumba said. The commissioner was troubled however by news reports on TV on Wednesday night which although hid the child’s face, still showed her grandparents and an unobscured view of the back of her head. According to the law, parents’ or a guardian’s permission must be given for their child to speak in public but sometimes that is not enough because the parents themselves might be in a desperate position where they cannot exercise sound judgement, Koursoumba said. The commissioner said all journalists must consider the long-term consequences of any news piece as it could

have long-lasting effects on a child. “Having a child repeat a traumatic story over and over again, which is what members of the press did, can prove to be very distressing and it can be seen as exploiting the child,” she said. “Families who are suffering due to the economic crisis should not be turned into a product to help increase viewer numbers,” Koursoumba said. Epaminontas said the Cyprus Radio and Television Broadcasting Authority would fully investigate whether any TV reports violated children’s rights. “I’m sure, unfortunately, that during the crisis we will see more and more cases like this one and it is the TV stations’ responsibility to demonstrate critical judgement and be careful with stories involving children,” he said. The director general added that if the investigation showed the law has been broken then the authority would take action and fine those responsible. “In general it is a sin to take advantage of a child’s pain just to boost ratings,” Epaminontas said. Koursoumba had asked Labour Minister, Zeta Emilianidou, on Wednesday to inform her if welfare services were aware of the ten-year-old’s case. She had also asked for the child’s family history, what actions welfare services had taken to ensure her safety and if her grandparents’ parenting ability had been evaluated. It is understood that the little girl’s parents are in Romania. Koursoumba asked Justice Minister, Ionas Nicolaou to investigate why the on-duty officer from the welfare services had not been immediately informed by police that a tenyear-old girl was sleeping on the streets.

Child Commissioner Leda Koursoumba (left) accuses journalists of being intrusive and preying on the vulnerable She also asked the minister to inform her whether police had fully investigated the allegations that the landlord where the family was staying had physically abused them before evicting them. “We are investigating the case of whether the landlord struck the grandparents or the child and are still waiting to take statements,” police spokesman Andreas Angelides told the Cyprus Mail yesterday. He added that a report would be completed, detailing the events on and after Easter Sunday regarding the child, which would be given to the child commissioner. According to Koursoumba the child is now safe and with family members under the guidance of welfare services, while her grandparents are still being evaluated by welfare services to see if they are fit to care for her.

President toasts Jewish community but warns on connections with north By Stefanos Evripidou PRESIDENT NICOS Anastasiades yesterday raised a glass to celebrate ten years since the establishment of the Cyprus Jewish Community Centre in Larnaca while also warning his hosts not to engage in any illegal activity in the occupied north. The Cyprus Jewish Community Centre (CJCC) invited the president to their tenth anniversary dinner celebrations in Pervolia where Anastasiades gave his address, thanking them for their “vibrant” and “active presence” in Cyprus. He hailed the accomplishments of the CJCC in such a short time and with little means: “You have initiated and developed the Jewish culture, as well as social, educational, religious and tourist activities, serving the Jewish community at large and the thousands of visiting tourists from the State of Israel and elsewhere, while at the same time contributing to the economy of Cyprus by attracting and facilitating investments.”

In the same breath, Anastasiades also warned against Israeli investments on Greek Cypriot properties in the north. “However, it is imperative that the leadership of the Cyprus Jewish Community, or any of its members, refrain from undertaking or encouraging any activities related with the illegal entity in the occupied areas of the Republic. “To this end, allow me to comment that it is vital that the required respect and gratitude towards the country that is hosting the Jewish Community is demonstrated and that the principles of international law and the laws of the Republic of Cyprus are adhered to.” Uncorroborated press reports have surfaced from time to time after the checkpoints opened in 2003, and particularly after the failed Annan plan referendum in 2004, concerning Israeli business interests buying up land in the north and funding construction projects on Greek Cypriot properties. Anastasiades returned on Wednesday from a three-day working visit to Israel where he spoke of a new era in Cyprus-Israel relations.

Italian fashion house founder Missoni dead OTTAVIO Missoni, 92, founder of the global family fashion empire that spawned the no-bra look and revolutionised textile patterns with its trademark bold stripes and zigzag patterns, died yesterday. A company spokeswoman said Missoni, who was known by nearly everyone by his diminutive ‘Tai’, died during the night at the family home in northern town of Sumirago, adjacent to the company factory. Missoni, who was discharged from hospital last week after being treated for heart problems, founded the company with his wife Rosita, whom he met while competing in the 1948 London Olympics, where he ran the 400 metres hurdles. The pair married in Italy and made track suits in a small workshop near Rosita’s home village, and later presented their first knitwear collection in Milan in 1958, just at the beginning of what came to be known as Italy’s economic miracle. Their designs caught the attention of a fashion world that was turning away from high fashion towards ‘readyto-wear’ styles and they made a high-profile collaboration in 1965 with designer Emmanuelle Kahn. The Missoni brand hit the headlines in 1967 with what become known as the ‘battle of the bras’. Rosita had told models to remove their bras before sending them onto the run-

The founder of the global fashion empire was 92 way at a major show in Florence so that the colours of the bras would not show through the knitwear. But the bright lights at the shows made the outfits transparent - scandalous for the times. The Missonis were not invited back but the incident became a cause celebre and soon afterwards Missoni appeared on the covers of international fashion magazines including Vogue, Elle and Marie Claire. The brand is now a dynasty that designs everything from sweaters to sheets to hotels. It is run by the founders’ children and several grandchildren. Their oldest son, Vittorio, is believed to have died in January when a small plane that was also carrying his wife and four others disappeared off the coast of Venezuela while they were on holiday. The company employs about 250 people and in 2011 had revenue of more than €150 million ($197.60 million).

Berlusconi corruption trial sought PROSECUTORS yesterday called for former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi to face another trial, on charges of bribing a senator, deepening the legal troubles of a key ally in Italy’s coalition government. A Naples judge must decide whether the evidence is sufficient to indict Berlusconi and order a trial. The prosecutors accuse Berlusconi of having paid former Senator Sergio De Gregorio 3 million euros ($3.95 million) to defect from the small Italy of Values party shortly after the 2006 parliamentary election and join the centre right. His defection undermined then-Prime Minister Romano Prodi’s government, which had a slim parliamentary majority, and contributed to its collapse in 2008. De Gregorio has admitted taking money, and prosecutors asked that he stand trial alongside Berlusconi. The request came a day after a Milan appeals court upheld a four-year prison sentence for tax fraud against Berlusconi, which will not take effect unless it is confirmed in a final appeal. His People of Freedom party (PDL) is a key partner in Prime Minister Enrico Letta’s right-left coalition government. Berlusconi is already facing trial on charges of paying for sex with a minor in “bunga bunga” parties at his villa outside Milan. He has denied any wrongdoing and says he is being persecuted by politically-motivated magistrates.

Bulgaria vote unlikely to deliver government By Angel Krasimirov and Tsvetelia Tsolova BULGARIA’S two biggest parties look unlikely to win a majority in Sunday’s election and neither looks capable of forming a coalition, prolonging a power vacuum in the EU’s poorest member that would shake the economy and stir unrest. Tens of thousands took to the streets in February to protest against corruption, rising unemployment and high utility bills in February, forcing Prime Minister Boiko Borisov and his GERB party to resign in favour of a caretaker government. Demonstrations are planned for polling day. GERB’s commitment to tight fiscal policy, which supports confidence in a currency peg to the euro, would reassure investors, but would enrage already-volatile public sentiment. Rightist GERB is now neckand-neck with the Socialists bloc that it joined in 2007 and its struggles show the risk of fraying democracy and vulnerable economies in fringe members as the eurozone focuses on its own financial crisis. Business in Bulgaria remains unhappy also over deep-rooted graft that it says means many public tenders are fixed and over extensive bureaucracy and unpredictable decision making. “Both parties do not deliver on pre-election pledges and so do not follow their programmes,” said Bozhidar Danev, chairman of the top business organisation BIA. “Politicians are liars.” Borisov has ruled out any coalition deal but has previously worked with Attack, the main beneficiary of the protests

with about 5 per cent support, on an unofficial basis, although its anti-EU, Roma and Turkish rhetoric limits its appeal as a partner. He could also try to bring onside the right-wing probusiness Bulgaria for the Citizens, led by former EU commissioner Meglena Kuneva, along with Attack to create an alliance with more than 120 seats in the 240 member parliament. The Socialists, for their part, have promised to create 250,000 jobs, bring unemployment down from an eightyear high and cut taxes for low earners as well as keeping debt low. They have failed to convince voters beyond their core support. They have previously worked with a smaller party, the eth-

nic Turkish MRF, but the two together may still fall short of a majority and may be also vying for Kuneva’s backing. “After the elections we will meet with all parties that have entered the parliament, without GERB,” Socialist leader Sergei Stains told newspaper Trud. A poll yesterday by the private Sova Harris agency put Borisov’s centre-right GERB at 20.9 per cent and the Socialists on 20.4 per cent while pollsters Centre of Analysis and Marketing put GERB at 21.3 per cent and the Socialists at 18.9 per cent. At least 43 per cent support is needed for a majority. A previous Sova Harris poll, conducted in December, had GERB on 26 per cent and the Socialists on 21 per cent. The state funded NPOC last month put GERB at 23.6 and the Socialists at 17.7 per cent. GERB’s fortunes started to fade after a wire-tapping scandal that has implicated one of its senior members.

Nazi-themed Richard Wagner opera cancelled A MODERN version of Richard Wagner’s opera Tannhauser has been cancelled in Germany after the opening-night audience complained about new scenes showing Jews being executed and dying in the gas chambers. A spokeswoman for Duesseldorf’s opera house said there would only be concert performances without theatrical staging. Monika Doll said producer Burkhard Kosminski had refused to tone down the disputed scenes, even though the Holocaust-related parts prompted several in the audience last Saturday to seek medical attention. “After considering all the arguments, we have come to the conclusion that we cannot justify such an extreme impact of our artistic work,” said a statement from Deutsche Oper am Rhein, according to the British Broadcasting Corporation.

“With paramount concern, we note that some scenes (especially the shooting scene) were depicted very realistically,” the statement continued, causing “psychological and physical stress” to some audience members. Despite “intensive conversation” with German theatre director and actor Kosminski about possible changes to the production, “he refused to do this for artistic reasons”, according to the statement. “Of course, we have to respect - and also for legal reasons - the artistic freedom of the director,” the opera house said. Wagner remains a controversial figure in Germany because of his anti-Semitic views. Adolf Hitler was an admirer, and playing Wagner’s music is still considered a taboo in Israel. Tannhauser was first performed in Dresden in 1845.

the European Union.” Membership of the EU has been a divisive issue for the Conservatives for decades, and Cameron is hoping the referendum will settle it once and for all. It depends not only on securing more favourable EU membership terms, but also on the Conservatives forming Britain’s next government after elections in 2015. Cameron underscored his determination to keep on narrowing Britain’s budget deficit at a “sensible and measured pace” and to help push for new trade deals between the EU and the United States and Canada. He also said he would continue to defend Britain’s financial services industry against some European measures such as a planned financial transaction tax which has been agreed by most countries in the eurozone and would affect the City of London. “We shouldn’t spend our time in politics endlessly bashing banks and financial institutions. If you want the economy to recover and if you want the economy to grow, you have got to play to your strengths,” he said.

DEMAND on NHS accident and emergency departments is “out of control” and “totally unsustainable”, the head of the health and social care regulator has warned. David Prior, chairman of the Care Quality Commission (CQC), said there should be widespread closures of hospital beds and investment in community care to tackle the increasing burden on emergency care. Prior said that far too many patients were arriving at hospital as emergency cases, a crisis which could be averted by earlier intervention through care in the community. This has put such pressure on the health care system that it is at the brink of collapse, he said. Speaking at a conference hosted by health think tank the King’s Fund, Prior said: “If we don’t start closing acute beds, the system is going to fall over. Emergency admissions through Accident and Emergency are out of control in large parts of the country... That is totally unsustainable.” Prior, who was brought in to lead the CQC in January, said that almost half of hospitals were now providing care which was either poor, or “not terribly” good.

PM says able to negotiate better deal with Brussels By William Schomberg and Marc Jones PRIME Minister David Cameron took on eurosceptic critics in his own party yesterday, saying he was able to negotiate a better deal with Brussels and it was wrong to say Britain should leave the European Union. He described as pessimists those who argue that Britain should leave the bloc and say there is no prospect of reforming the EU. “I think they are wrong ... I think it is possible to change and reform this organisation,” Cameron told an investment conference. Cameron came under renewed pressure from within his Conservative party this week when former finance minister

British Prime Minister David Cameron took on eurosceptic critics in his own party, describing as pessimists those arguing that Britain should leave the European Union Nigel Lawson said a plan to renegotiate Britain’s commitments to the EU, before an expected membership referendum in 2017, was doomed to fail and the country should leave the bloc. London mayor Boris Johnson, speaking at the

same conference, said the party should rally around Cameron and his plan. But Johnson, who is believed to harbour ambitions to succeed Cameron as leader of the Conservative party, also said Britain should be ready to “walk away” from the EU if it fails

in its renegotiation bid. “This is not for Britain the existential question it was ... when we joined at the height of the Cold War,” he said. “We now live in a globalised economy where the real growth markets are to be found outside

Deadly blaze at clothing factory EIGHT people were killed when a fire swept through a clothing factory in Bangladesh, police and an industry association official said yesterday, as the death toll from the collapse of another factory building two weeks ago climbed above 900. The fire, in an industrial district of Dhaka, comes amid global attention on safety standards in Bangladesh’s booming garment industry following the catastrophic collapse of Rana Plaza, on the outskirts of the city, in the world’s deadliest industrial accident since the Bhopal disaster in India in 1984. “It is not clear to us how the accident happened, but we are trying to find out the cause,” Mohammad Atiqul Islam, president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), told Reuters.

The helicopter was on a photography flight when it lost power, forcing a crash landing in Fort Street, which is home to a large apartment complex and Hawaii Pacific University. The area is usually full of students and office workers and has a lot of vehicle and pedestrian traffic. The chopper ended up along a kerb, badly damaging a parked car.

Ex PM son abducted as Taliban threaten polls By Michael Georgy GUNMEN kidnapped the son of a former Pakistani prime minister yesterday as a letter from the leader of the Pakistani Taliban revealed plans for suicide bomb attacks on election day. Pakistani Taliban leader Hakimullah Mehsud, in a message to the group’s spokesman, outlined plans for the attacks, including suicide blasts, in all four of the country’s provinces on polling day on Saturday. “We don’t accept the system of infidels which is called democracy,” Mehsud said in the letter, dated May 1, and obtained by Reuters yesterday. Since April, the al Qaedalinked Pakistani Taliban have killed more than 100 people in

Militants reveal attack plans ahead of Pakistani elections attacks on election candidates and rallies, particularly those of secular-leaning parties, in a bid to undermine elections they regard as un-Islamic. The polls, already Pakistan’s most violent, will mark the first time a civilian government has completed a full term and handed over to another administration. The attacks have prevented candidates from the three main parties in the ruling coalition from holding big rallies. Instead, they have relied on door-to-door campaigning or small meetings in homes or on street corners.

Gunmen kidnapped the son of Yusuf Raza Gilani, former prime minister and stalwart of the outgoing Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), as he headed for a small political gathering in the central city of Multan, police said. Ali Haider Gilani’s secretary and guard were shot dead in the attack. “If we don’t get my brother by this evening I will not let the elections happen in my area,” said his brother, Musa, in televised comments. Taliban spokesman Ihsanullah Ihsan denied responsibility. The Pakistan Taliban are blamed for many of the suicide

bombings across the country, a nuclear-armed strategic ally of the United States. But they have not attacked the main opposition party led by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, which has courted support from groups accused of supporting militancy. Sharif, seen as favourite to become the next prime minister, says Pakistan should reconsider its support for the US war on Islamist militancy and suggests he would favour negotiations with the Taliban. Nor have the Taliban attacked former cricketer Imran Khan’s party, which advocates shooting down US drones and withdrawing the Pakistani military from insurgency-infested ethnic Pashtun areas along the Afghan border.

CHINESE authorities have begun investigating reports that Zhang Yimou, one of China’s best-known movie directors, has seven children in violation of strict family planning rules, which could result in a fine of 160 million yuan ($26.05 million), state media said yesterday. Online reports have surfaced that Zhang, who dazzled the world in 2008 with his Beijing Olympic ceremonies, “has at least seven children and will face a 160million-yuan fine,” said the website of the People’s Daily, the Chinese Communist Party mouthpiece. An unnamed official at the Wuxi Municipal Population and Family Planning Commission said “based on the current policies and regulations, an investigation is currently being carried out”, according to the report. It is unclear where Zhang’s children were born, the report said, citing a worker at the Jiangsu Province Population and Family Planning Commission. Both the Wuxi and Jiangsu Population and Family Planning Commission could not be reached for comment. Zhang, 61, once the badboy of Chinese cinema whose movies were sometimes banned at home while popular overseas, has since become a darling of the Communist Party, despite long being a subject of tabloid gossip for alleged trysts with his actresses. Zhang’s newest project, a film to depict wartime Nanjing under Japanese occupation starred Hollywood actor Christian Bale in a leading role.

Accused kidnapper held on $8m bond Lawyer says accused Cleveland abductor on suicide watch By Daniel Trotta and Kim Palmer

Ariel Castro stands with his head down during his arraignment on kidnapping and rape charges yesterday in Cleveland, Ohio (AFP)

A FORMER school bus driver accused of kidnapping three young women and raping them during a decade of captivity in his house was yesterday ordered held on a $8-million bond in a Cleveland court, his head bowed and his face turned away from spectators. It was the first time the darkhaired, balding Ariel Castro, 52, had been seen in public since his arrest on Monday, following the escape of three women and a child from his house in a low-income neighbourhood of Cleveland, Ohio. In Cleveland Municipal Court, Castro was expressionless, his hands in cuffs before Judge Lauren Moore, who set his bond at $2 million for each of the women and the child who was born in captivity. Castro’s home “was a prison to these three women and the child”, Cuyahoga County Assistant Prosecuting Attorney

‘Syria likely used chemical arms’ BRITAIN said yesterday it believed it was “very likely” the Syrian government had used chemical weapons, and Turkey said it was testing victims of the Syrian civil war for traces of such substances. US Secretary of State John Kerry expressed gratitude to Russia for its willingness to try to arrange a “Geneva two” conference to negotiate an end to the conflict, in a sign of a thawing of the long diplomatic chill between Washington and Moscow, Syria’s strongest ally. Damascus and the head of the Arab League welcomed the apparent rapprochement between the United States and Russia this week. Syrian opposition leaders are sceptical of an initiative they fear might let President Bashar al-Assad hang on to power. Kerry, in Rome, said however a transition government would have to have the “mutual consent of both sides, which clearly means that in our judgment President Assad will not be a component of that transitional government”. Syria’s foreign ministry said Damascus was convinced by the “the firm Russian stance which is based on the UN principles of noninterference in internal affairs or the threat to use force against the safety of any state”. Israel has asked Russia not to sell Syria an advanced air defence system which would help Assad fend off foreign military intervention as he battles a more than two-yearold rebellion. The S-300 missile is designed to shoot

Damaged buildings and debris are seen in the Khaldiyeh district in Homs yesterday down planes and missiles at 125-mile (200km) ranges. It would enhance Syria’s current Russian-supplied defences, which did not deter Israel from launching air strikes around Damascus last weekend. “We have raised objections to this (sale) with the Russians, and the Americans have too,” an Israeli official told Reuters. Kerry said in Rome that Washington would prefer Russia not to sell weapons to Syria. Western states have been reluctant to consider military action against Assad, but US President Barack Obama has said the use of chemical weapons would cross a “red line” and trigger a strong response. Evidence of such use is so far fragmentary and disputed.

Yemen kidnappers free European captives - source YEMENI kidnappers have released a Finnish couple and an Austrian man missing since being taken hostage in the capital Sanaa in December 2012, a senior Yemeni security source said yesterday. The source told Reuters the trio, who Yemeni officials have said were studying Arabic in Yemen, had been freed on Wednesday night after mediation by authorities in neighbouring Oman, who, he added, had paid a sum of money for their release. “The Omani authorities led

mediation efforts and paid a ransom to free the Austrian and Finnish hostages,” a senior Yemeni security source told Reuters. “They were handed over to the Omani authorities last night,” the source said. He declined to specify the amount of the ransom. Kidnappings of Westerners occur sporadically in Yemen, mostly carried out by al Qaeda militants and tribesmen. Lawlessness in the Arabian Peninsula state has alarmed its neighbour and top world

oil exporter Saudi Arabia, as well as the United States, which increasingly views Yemen as a front line in its struggle against al Qaeda and its affiliates. The Austrian hostage, Dominik Neubauer, had appeared in a video posted on YouTube in February with what appeared to be a an AK47 rifle pointed at his head, saying he would be killed if ransom money was not paid to a Yemeni tribe within a week. The names of the Finns were not immediately known.

Brian Murphy told the judge. “Today the situation is turned on him,” Murphy said. “Mr. Castro stands before you a captive, in captivity, a prisoner.” Castro had been formally charged on Wednesday with four counts of kidnapping and three counts of rape. He neither spoke nor entered a plea during his initial court appearance yesterday. Castro kept his face turned away from the gallery that was crowded with media and spectators. “He did not want to be on camera,” his court-appointed lawyer, Kathleen DeMetz, said after the hearing. She said Castro would need $800,000 cash to get out of jail. “The man doesn’t have any money,” she said. “He clearly doesn’t have that.” DeMetz told the court that Castro was unemployed. Castro was fired from his job driving school buses last November. Now he is on a suicide watch in jail and is

expected to be held in isolation, the lawyer said. The $8-million bond set by the judge was higher than the $5 million requested by the prosecutor during the proceeding. The judge also ordered Castro to have no contact with the victims or their families. Officials said the three women were at times bound in chains or rope and endured starvation, beatings, sexual assaults and, in the case of one of them, several miscarriages deliberately induced by their captor. The imprisonment of the women and small child came to an end on Monday after neighbours, drawn to the house by cries for help, broke through a door to rescue Amanda Berry, whose disappearance in 2003 the day before her 17th birthday was widely publicised in the local media. The recording of her frantic emergency-911 call that evening, declaring, “I’ve been kidnapped and I’ve been

missing for 10 years and I’m here. I’m free now,” has been replayed countless times on television news broadcasts around the world. Rescued with Berry, now 27, was her six-year-old daughter, conceived and born during her confinement, and two fellow captives - Gina DeJesus, 23, who vanished in 2004 and Michelle Knight, 32, who went missing in 2002. Initially, Castro’s two brothers, Pedro, 54, and Onil, 50, were also arrested as suspects in the case, but police said they were not charged after investigators determined they had no knowledge of the abductions or captivity of the women. They appeared in court yesterday morning on unrelated outstanding misdemeanor charges and were released. Berry told police that her escape on Monday had been her first chance to break free in the 10 years that she was held, seizing the opportunity during Castro’s momentary absence.

Business Lloyds slammed over more job cuts

Bank of England holds back after better data

LLOYDS Banking Group came under attack yesterday for cutting hundreds more U.K. jobs and planning to close a large office. Britain’s Unite union said 850 staff would be axed, mainly in Southend, Essex. It said the bank has announced almost 2,750 job losses since the start of the year. Lloyds, HSBC and Barclays combined have announced cuts of around 5,500 jobs since the beginning of 2013, said Unite. Lloyds’ office in Southend is set to close, putting 690 jobs at risk, while the bank is also cutting another 160 roles across its commercial banking and bancassurance operations, said Unite. National officer Dominic Hook said: “Lloyds is celebrating a return to profit and there are hints of dividend payouts to shareholders but the bank’s workers are in constant fear that they will be next for the chop. “This is no way to treat staff. It’s time to urgently review this continuous tide of cuts and build the bank’s strength. “The constant job cuts across the banking industry is bad for bank staff, does nothing to support customers and it’s bad for Britain’s economy. Since January 5,500 job cuts have been announced by high street banks - that’s over 1,000 a month. “Britain’s banking industry has a duty to the communities it profits from and that means these institutions need to be responsible employers.” Lloyds said the job losses are in its commercial banking, retail, group operations, group executive functions, finance, insurance, and wealth, asset finance and international divisions. The bank said around 275 roles are being created, mainly in Belfast and Pitreavie, Scotland.

THE Bank of England held back from injecting more emergency cash into the U.K. economy yesterday, amid further encouraging signs after Britain avoided a triple-dip recession. Policymakers kept quantitative easing (QE) at £375 billion and held rates at their record low of 0.5 per cent once again this month in the wake of better-than-expected 0.3-per cent growth in first-quarter gross domestic product (GDP) and encouraging indications from industry survey data. Manufacturing figures added to the recovery hopes yesterday after the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported the first back-to-back monthly rise in output from the sector in two years, with factory production up 1.1 per cent in March and overall industrial production activity up 0.7 per cent. Lee Hopley, chief economist at manufacturers’ organisation EEF, said that while yesterday’s no-change decision was expected, the Bank might still opt to expand QE to give the recovery a helping hand. She said: “Some signs of growth at the start of the year, together with some stabilisation of activity indicators in April, will have been regarded as positive. “But confidence that the underlying growth situation is

The Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee has been split about whether to boost asset purchases improving will be fragile, leaving the possibility of more asset purchases on the table.” Markets have been buoyed in recent days by monetary stimulus in the shape of interest rate cuts and QE by other central banks, with the Dow Jones Industrial Index soaring above 15,000 points for the first time and the FTSE 100 reaching levels not seen since December 2007. In Britain, the Bank’s ninestrong Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) has been split about whether to boost asset purchases. Minutes of its meeting last month showed governor Sir Mervyn King, with fellow

policymakers David Miles and Paul Fisher, wanted to increase QE by £25 billion as Britain appeared to teeter on the brink of a triple-dip recession. They failed to win support from the rest of the committee over fears that it might exacerbate rising inflation and prompt renewed weakness in sterling. The economic picture has since changed, with optimism picking up after official data showed muted but betterthan-expected growth for the first quarter. Meanwhile, surveys for April showed the powerhouse service sector leaping ahead again

while the beleaguered construction and manufacturing industries looked to be on the verge of a return to growth. Yesterday’s decision is the penultimate one from Sir Mervyn before he hands over to new governor Mark Carney in July. David Kern, chief economist at the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), said the Bank was “prudent” to hold fire on QE this month. He said: “Following the return to positive GDP growth in the first quarter, pressures for an increase in QE have eased. “We still firmly believe that adding to QE would only pro-

vide marginal benefits for the economy, while increasing the risks of higher inflation and bubbles in the future.” The Institute of Directors also welcomed the no-change decision, forecasting a steady pick-up in growth over the course of the year. Economists said the MPC was likely to want to hold off from more QE until the impact of the newly beefed-up Funding for Lending scheme is clearer, now that it is more focused on helping small and medium businesses to borrow much-needed working capital. Rate-setters are also expected to wait until the arrival of Carney.

Greek youth unemployment over 60% in February Claims rate lowest since 2008

GREEK youth unemployment rose above 60 per cent for the first time in February, reflecting the pain caused by the country’s crippling recession after years of austerity under its international bailout. Greece’s jobless rate has almost tripled since the country’s debt crisis emerged in 2009 and was more than twice the eurozone’s average unemployment reading of 12.1 per cent in March. While the overall unemployment rate rose to 27 per cent, according to statistics service data released yesterday, joblessness among those aged between 15 and 24 jumped to 64.2 per cent in February from 59.3 per cent in January. Youth unemployment was 54.1 per cent in March 2012. “It is by far the highest youth unemployment rate in the eurozone, highlighting the difficulties young people face in entering the labour market, despite

People queue up inside the Greek Manpower Employment Organisation in central Athens on April 11, 2013 government incentives to create jobs,” said economist Nikos Magginas at National Bank. Athens has lowered the minimum monthly wage for those under 25 years by 32 per cent to about 500 euros to entice hiring. Greece’s economy is in its sixth year of recession,

battered by tax hikes and spending cuts demanded by its European Union and International Monetary Fund lenders. The economy is expected to slump by 4.2 to 4.5 per cent this year. The high jobless rate is keeping Greeks pessimistic about their economic prospects.

THE number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits dropped to its lowest level in nearly five-anda-half years last week, signalling labour market resilience in the face of fiscal austerity. Initial claims for state unemployment benefits fell 4,000 to a seasonally-adjusted 323,000, the lowest level since January 2008, the Labour Department said yesterday. Claims for the prior week were revised to show 3,000 more applications received than previously reported. Economists polled by Reuters had expected first-time applications to rise to 335,000 last week. The third straight weekly decline in claims pushed them further below the 350,000 mark, which economists normally associate with a firming labour market. Claims are showing no sign of a pick-up in layoffs even as other parts of the economy such as manufacturing start to show strain from tighter fiscal policy. A Labour Department analyst said no states had been estimated and there was nothing unusual in the state-level data. The four-week moving average for new claims, a better gauge of job market trends, dropped 6,250 to 336,750 - the lowest level since November 2007. Coming on the heels of data last week showing surprising strength in the labour market, the claims report could further assuage fears of an abrupt slowdown in the economy. Employers added 165,000 new jobs to their payrolls in April and hiring in the previous two months was stronger than initially reported. The unemployment rate dropped to a four-year low of 7.5 per cent. The improvement in employment contrasts sharply with other data, including retail sales and manufacturing, that have suggested a cooling in the economy at the end of the first quarter, which persisted early in the April-June period.

Opinion

Without a Cyprus settlement it will be difficult to exploit our hydrocarbons NATO General Secretary Anders Fogh Rasmussen angered the Cyprus government and all the political parties after stating that drilling for natural gas and oil should start only after there was a settlement of the Cyprus problem. It was Cyprus’ sovereign right to exploit the hydrocarbon deposits in its exclusive economic zone, responded President Anastasiades, warning that statements like Rasmussen’s reinforced Turkey’s intransigence and did not help efforts for a solution. The political parties were less diplomatic in their reaction to the NATO chief’s “unacceptable” position, the EDEK spokesman saying the only way it could be interpreted was as “as crude blackmail of Cyprus and Cypriot Hellenism.” A DIKO spokesman said the problems Rasmussen was concerned about stemmed from Turkey’s threats. AKEL condemned the statement but was not surprised, as NATO always “considered Turkey especially important to its plans in the area.” All were agreed that it was Cyprus’ sovereign right to decide when it would drill for hydrocarbons and Turkey’s threats were in violation of international law. They were absolutely correct, in theory, and their knee-jerk reaction was understandable to an extent, but we hope that Rasmussen’s unacceptable position would have made them think about the country’s exploration plans. His comment could also have been interpreted as advice that it would be unwise for Cyprus to proceed with exploration or drilling for hydrocarbons before a settlement, because Turkey could carry out its threat to stop it by force. An attack would be a violation of international law, but who would stop it? Does Cyprus have the means to defend its sovereign rights and offer protection to a company that is drilling for gas? In fact, would any company invest in a platform for extracting natural gas from the sea, with the threat of a Turkish strike looming? It is very easy to pontificate about our sovereign rights but our politicians need to get real and understand that without a Cyprus settlement it would be extremely difficult to exploit our hydrocarbons deposits. Is there anyone who thinks that Turkey is bluffing and we should call her bluff? If the threat is carried out, no drilling company would want to have anything to do with Cyprus again, even if the UN condemns the act of aggression. We suspect that Rasmussen’s comment was a warning in diplomatic language and our politicians would do well to take note. After all, is there anyone who doubts that regional security and stability must be guaranteed before any company invests in the costly preparations for extracting natural gas from the sea?

Is Europe losing its faith in the Union? I

F YOU didn’t know, yesterday was Europe Day, then you find yourself in good company with a majority of Europeans. Even in the most buoyant time, this holiday – marking the Schuman Declaration, presented by French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman in 1950, that launched the European Coal and Steel Community – doesn’t come with the transcontinental fireworks of America’s July 4. It does, however, provide occasion to reflect on the growing perils to Europe, and the enormous risks they pose to both the United States and the global future. For all the talk of Europe’s fiscal deficits, or the “democracy deficit” that leaves European Union institutions lacking accountability and legitimacy, the most dangerous deficit is one of Europeans. Last week, no less an authority than Jose Manuel Barroso, the Portuguese politician who is president of the European Commission, lamented in a speech that the European dream was under threat from a “resurgence of populism and nationalism” across the 27 countries and 500 million people of the European Union. Barroso said: “At a time when so many Europeans are faced with unemployment, uncertainty and growing inequality, a sort of ‘European fatigue’ has set in, coupled with a lack of understanding. Who does what? Who decides what? Who controls whom and what? And where are we heading? … And, let us be clear, the indifference of many pro-Europeans is also a risk.” The percentage of European nationals who distrust the European Union is growing with alarming speed, according to the Eurobarometer, a public opinion service of the European Commission. In November 2012, some 72 per cent of Spaniards said they “tended not to trust the EU,” compared to just 23 per cent five years earlier. In Italy, the figure has spiked to 56 per cent from 41 per cent. Concern should be greatest in Germany, where public opinion toward Europe could be most decisive to the continent’s future. Europeanism was long a welcome identity for a country that after World War II was more than happy to embrace an alternative.

Comment Frederick Kempe That attitude has eroded with increased distance from the country’s Nazi past and growing doubts about Europe’s future – as well as the economic cost to Germans of the eurozone crisis. Though Germans by a 75 per cent majority still prefer remaining in the euro, some 56 per cent have no trust in the EU, and fewer than a third have a positive image of the EU. German Chancellor Angela Merkel dare not ignore the emotion behind the emergence of Germany’s first anti-euro party, the Alternative for Germany. Though its support in September elections is likely to be small, its ideas are influencing the public debate. A senior German policymaker told me recently that Merkel is an even more passionate European than is commonly understood, and that she would never abandon the euro. “But it is increasingly difficult,” this official said, “to keep the German electorate with her.” In a European Council on Foreign Relations paper, experts Jose Ignacio Torreblanca and Mark Leonard wrote: What is striking is that everyone in the EU has lost faith in the project, both creditors and debtors … In southern European countries, the EU looks like the IMF (International Monetary Fund) did in Latin America: a golden straitjacket that is strangling the space for national politics and emptying their national democracies of content … In northern European countries, the EU is increasingly seen to have failed as a controller for the policies of the southern rim. The creditors have a sense of victimhood that mirrors that of the debtors. Key Obama administration officials have come to recognize the enormous stakes for the United States and the world of European unity and effectiveness. The United States, with just 19 per cent of global gross domestic product, can only shape the future global system through closer collaboration with its most important European allies. It isn’t just that the Europe-

‘In Western Europe today there is a dearth of historical imagination and of global ambition. There is no Churchill, nor De Gaulle, nor Adenauer’

The percentage of European nationals who distrust the European Union is growing with alarming speed an Union is the world’s largest economy, it has also been the world’s most effective force in extending democracy and free markets over the past 20 years – embracing 15 new member states in a manner that has expanded rule of law and reduced ethnic conflict. Geostrategic purpose is perhaps the most important motivator behind President Barack Obama’s decision to highlight the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership negotiations in his State of the Union message. Former National Security Adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski told Globsec, an annual security conference in Bratislava, that, though the agreement will be hard to negotiate and implement: Eventually, it can create additional transatlantic bonds that will dramatically alter the geopolitical realities of the world as a whole. It can shape a new balance between the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceanic regions, while at the same time generating in the West new vitality, more security and greater cohesion. The larger problem, Brzezinski said, had to do

with the nature of today’s Europe. Europe needs leaders who can personalize and dramatize the historic mission of a more united Europe in closer intimacy with America. In Western Europe today there is a dearth of historical imagination and of global ambition. There is no Churchill, nor De Gaulle, nor Adenauer. Current political discourse is dominated by narrower perspectives and by the more immediate preoccupations of their constituents. But in the process the inspirational vision that is expected of democratic leaders is absent. European leaders are aware enough of their problem that they dubbed 2013 as “The European Year of Citizens.” For its part, the European Commission has released this Europe Day video. But PR won’t solve the problem, any more than a banking union could. Without a rediscovery of moral, historical and global purpose, the deficit of Europeans will grow. We will all suffer the consequences. Frederick Kempe is a Reuters contributor

Baz Luhrmann takes on classic with Great Gatsby Latest incarnation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s mournful ode to the 1920s By Chris Michaud IT is hailed as ‘the great American novel,’ but so far The Great Gatsby has defied attempts by some of Hollywood’s top filmmakers to bring its lyrically romantic story and tragic characters to cinematic life. But that didn’t faze director Baz Luhrmann. Luhrmann, known for his lavish productions, assembled a roster of stars led by Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and Tobey Maguire in the latest incarnation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s mournful ode to the carefree, hedonistic 1920s and its youthful, wealthy and self-absorbed denizens. One of the year’s most anticipated films, The Great Gatsby opens in US theatres today and has been accorded the prestigious opening-night slot at the Cannes Film Festival on May 15. As far back as 1926, just a year after the book was published, Hollywood has tried to capture and project Fitzgerald’s artful prose onto the silver screen. A 1949 version starring Alan Ladd focused on Gatsby’s criminal connections and even took significant liberties with the ending. The last effort, apart from a TV film, in 1974 featured Robert Redford and Mia Farrow atop the marquee. Critics slammed it as lifeless and lugubrious, and the box office was a dismal $20.6 million. Luhrmann aims to change its checkered history with a lush 3-D production rendered in his trademark eye-popping visual style that first dazzled fans in the surprise 2001 hit Moulin Rouge, which went on to win several Oscars. But the challenges of adapting The Great Gatsby were

Leonardo Di Caprio heads an all-star cast including Carey Mulligan and Tobey Maguire mired in both its period source material and its cinematic failures. Jay Gatsby is an enigmatic hero pining for a lost love in the person of the not always sympathetic Daisy Buchanan, played by Mulligan. The tragic love story is built around illusion, but illusion might well be said to be Luhrmann’s stock-in-trade. Due to budgetary restraints, the Australian director abandoned his plan to shoot in New York, where the book is set, and moved the entire production to his native country. In the end, he said: “It was

a great plus. We felt that we could create this grand illusion.” Even so, the production was plagued by everything from rain-drenching weather to on-set accidents, one of which resulted in a concussion for Luhrmann and shut down filming while he recovered. Early on, the filmmakers asked themselves how they could make the classic story, indelibly linked to the 1920s, “feel like it was about now,” as producer Douglas Wick put it. Luhrmann agreed that the challenge lay in making the

story relevant for today’s audiences, while respecting what DiCaprio called “American Shakespeare ... one of the most celebrated novels of all time.” “I wanted the film to feel like it would have felt to read Fitzgerald’s novel in ‘25,” Luhrmann told Reuters, noting that Fitzgerald infused his novel with African-American street music and coined the term ‘Jazz Age.’ “It made the book extremely pop cultural, extremely of the moment. It summed up the crazed, intoxicating times,” he said of that music.

Enter Jay-Z, who was executive producer of the soundtrack. In what Luhrmann called “a great collaboration,” Jay-Z brought to fruition his idea of translating jazz into hip hop, with the help of music from Beyonce, Bryan Ferry, Fergie, Lana Del Ray and will.i.am. Despite the 21st century concept of filming the movie in 3-D and driven by contemporary music, Luhrmann remains confident that Gatsby’s story is a timeless one. “It plays in any place at any time. And the central idea of Gatsby is universal,” he said.

Madonna to be honoured Winona ‘wasn’t pretty enough’ at Billboard awards By Patricia Reaney MADONNA will be honoured at the Billboard Music Awards show this month for her 2012 MDNA tour, the high grossing concert tour of the year, organisers of the awards show said this week. The singer will accept the Top Touring Artist award at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on May 19th for the tour that grossed more than $305 million from 88 soldout shows and attracted an audience of 2.2 million people. “A cultural icon, Madonna is one of the most successful and influential entertainers of all time and was recently named Billboard’s Top Money Maker of 2012,” Billboard said in a statement. The chart-topping singer holds numerous other Billboard awards, including the record for the most top 10 singles (38). In addition to her music, Madonna is also an avid art collector. On Tuesday she sold a 1921 painting by the French artist Fernand Leger, Trois Femmes a la Table Rouge, for $7.16 million to raise money for the non-profit Ray of Light Foundation, to fund girls’ education in poor countries. The mother of four, including two adopted children from Malawi, is planning to build 10 schools in the African nation.

The 41-year-old was discouraged from becoming an actress

WINONA Ryder was told she wasn’t ‘pretty enough’ to be an actress. The 41-year-old actress whose movie credits include Heathers and Edward Scissorhands - said she was discouraged from pursuing a movie career when she first started out by a casting director who felt she wasn’t photogenic enough. She told Interview magazine: “I was in the middle of auditioning and I was mid-sentence when the casting director said, ‘Listen, kid. You should not be an actress. You are not pretty enough. You should go back to wherever you came from and you should go to school. You don’t have it.’ She was very blunt - I honestly think that she thought she was doing me a favour.” However, the star wasn’t deterred from her dream career and credits her parents for giving her the confidence to ‘be unique’.

Visual effects pioneer Ray Harryhausen dead at 92 INFLUENTIAL visual effects maker and animator Ray Harryhausen, who brought monsters, skeletons and mythological beasts to life for movies like Jason and the Argonauts long before computers took over the job, died this week at age 92, his family said. Harryhausen, who was born in Los Angeles and worked for more than 40 years in the movie industry, died in London, his family said in a statement. “The Harryhausen family regret to announce the death of Ray Harryhausen, visual effects pioneer and stopmotion model animator. “Ray’s influence on today’s film makers was enormous with luminaries; Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, Peter Jackson, George Lucas, John Landis and the UK’s own Nick Park have cited Harryhausen as being the man whose work inspired their own creations,” the statement said. Harryhausen used a laborious, painstaking ‘stopmotion’ animation technique to single-handedly create imaginative effects for 16 films from the 1950s into the 1980s including three Sinbad movies, Clash of the Titans (1981), Earth vs. the Flying Saucers (1956) and One Million Years B.C. (1966). He received a special Academy Award for career achievement in 1992. “Some say Citizen Kane is the greatest motion picture of all time, others say it’s Casablanca,” actor Tom Hanks said as he presented the special Oscar to Harryhausen. “For me, the greatest picture of all time is Jason and the Argonauts.” That 1963 movie based on Greek mythology featured scenes of sword-wielding skeletons battling human warriors, a colossal statue coming to life and a sevenheaded serpent. While others officially handled the directing chores in his movies, it was Harryhausen who dreamed up, modelled and shot some of the most memorable moments in film history. Most of his movies, often made with producer Charles Schneer, were low-budget affairs. He once had to make a giant octopus with just six tentacles to save money. But his movie magic helped inspire future cinema giants. Harryhausen perfected the ‘stop-motion’ technique that had been used in a small number of earlier films by others including special effects pioneer Willis O’Brien, who would become his mentor, in King Kong (1933). The process allows miniatures to be turned into monsters. Doll-sized models are photographed one frame at a time in continuous poses to create the illusion of motion. Ray Bradbury, the American science fiction writer who was a lifelong friend, said, “Harryhausen stands alone as a technician, as an artist and a dreamer.”

The results showed that metabolic syndrome characteristics were improved in those who did as little as 50 per cent of the guidelines.

thirds off feet 20 hours a day Light exercise ‘makes difference’ Two TWO thirds of people spend 20 hours a day either lying JUST half the amount of recommended exercise can cut the risk of serious illness, academics have found. Doing 75 minutes of light exercise - such as a brisk walk a week can make a “big difference” to people’s health. Professor Conrad Earnest and colleagues at the University of Bath’s department for health studied patients with metabolic syndrome – a combination of medical disorders that together increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The study was designed and carried out in the United States to examine the minimal threshold for exercise benefits based on public physical activity guidelines. The guidelines recommend that adults do at least two hours and 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise, such as brisk walking, a week and muscle strengthening

down or seated, a poll suggests. Of 1,000 UK adults questioned, 67 per cent said they spend 20 hours or more off their feet. But the poll, conducted by Weight Watchers UK, found that 54 per cent of people believe that they lead busy and active lives. Zoe Hellman, head of public health at the dieting and weight loss organisation, said: “The rise in modern technology means we’re constantly ‘switched on’ - from texting and emailing to browsing online, it’s mentally exhausting. “In our heads we feel like we’ve rushed around all day, but in reality we’ve hardly moved - 21st century living where everything is accessible to us 24/7 has engineered movement out of our daily routine.”

Unplanned baby ‘link to blues’ WOMEN who have unintended pregnancies are four times more likely to suffer from postpartum depression, research suggests. A year after having their babies, just three per cent of women who intended to fall pregnant suffered from the condition compared to 12 per cent of women who had “mistimed” or “unwanted” pregnancies, a new study found. The authors suggested that healthcare workers should ask women whether or not they intended to fall pregnant to help identify those at risk. The researchers, from the University of North Carolina, questioned women about whether or not they had planned their pregnancies when they were 15 to 19 weeks pregnant. They found that 433 women had intended pregnancies, 207 said their pregnancy was “mistimed” and 40 (six per cent) said their pregnancy was unwanted. Researchers classed both unwanted and mistimed pregnancies as “unintended” ones. At three months, 11 per cent of women who reported unintended pregnancies were suffering from postpartum depression compared with five per cent of women who intended to fall pregnant. The figure stood at 12 per cent for unintended pregnancies and three per cent for intended pregnancies after a year.

British cigarette branding stall prompts criticism

Doctors to older, heavy smokers: get CT screening for lung cancer

Government yet to make a decision on plain packs

By Sharon Begley

By William James THE British government is still considering banning company branding on cigarette packets even though it omitted proposals from its legislative agenda laid out in parliament on Wednesday, Prime Minister David Cameron said. Britain had looked set to become the first European country to force cigarette makers to use plain packaging, a step opposed by the tobacco industry, which sees it as harming their profits. Queen Elizabeth made no reference to the plans in a speech setting out the government’s legislative plans for the year ahead, drawing criticism from opposition lawmakers and disappointment from anti-smoking groups. However, Cameron told parliament that the government was still looking at the issue. The Department of Health held four months of consultations last year to gather evidence on whether standardised tobacco packaging would discourage young smokers and help existing smokers ditch the habit. “This an important deci-

sion and we make no apology for taking time to get it right. We are closely watching what is happening around the world,” a department spokesperson said. Last year, Australia implemented a law saying cigarettes must be sold in olive green packets carrying graphic health warnings. Cuba, whose luxury cigars are world renowned and feature distinctive packages, launched a challenge against the Australian law at the World Trade Organisation last week. Despite its absence from the government’s plans, the leader of the opposition Labour Party offered to help speed through any proposed legislation. “If he wants the bill on cigarette packaging, we’ll help him get it through,” Ed Miliband said. “It’s the right thing to do for public health, it’s the right thing to do for the country.” Miliband also questioned the role of government adviser Lynton Crosby in the decision, saying his consultancy firm had worked with tobacco companies. A spokesman for David Cameron said Crosby had no influence over the contents of the Queen’s speech.

Anti-smoking groups have slammed the decision

Campaign groups wrote to Health Minister Jeremy Hunt expressing disappointment over the omission of the plan from the government’s programme. “The failure to bring forward legislation fatally undermines the Government’s

credibility on public health issues,” said the letter from the Smokefree Action Coalition, an alliance of more than 100 health organisations. Companies such as Philip Morris and British American Tobacco fear that plain packaging would eat into sales of

higher margin brands and say it would encourage the global black market in tobacco. Imperial Tobacco shares have risen marginally since reports circulated in the British media that Cameron had dropped the initiative.

Eating peppers can ‘help prevent Parkinson’s Disease’ EDIBLE nicotine in peppers, tomatoes and potatoes may protect against Parkinson’s disease, a study suggests. The research adds to evidence associating a reduced risk of the disease with smoking. Peppers appeared to have the biggest effect. People who ate the vegetables twice a week or more were found to be 30 per cent less likely

to develop Parkinson’s. However, experts urged caution since a number of factors including the disease itself may have influenced the findings. Nicotine, the addictive chemical in cigarettes, is found in tiny amounts in a number of edible plants related to tobacco, including peppers, tomatoes, potatoes and aubergines.

Speculation that nicotine might protect against Parkinson’s was fuelled by animal studies. Experiments showed that stimulation of nicotine-sensitive receptor molecules in the brain prevents the kind of neuron damage seen in Parkinson’s. Human population studies have also shown that people who smoke are less likely to

develop the disease. Even passive smoking, which involves much less exposure to nicotine, seems to be protective. For the new study 490 patients newly diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, and 644 other individuals not suffering from any neurological conditions, were questioned about their dietary habits and tobacco use.

Vegetable consumption in general was not found to affect Parkinson’s risk. But the likelihood of being diagnosed with Parkinson’s reduced the more people ate vegetables from the Solanaceae family, which contain nicotine. The trend was strongest for peppers, mainly in people with little or no previous exposure to tobacco.

STEPPING into the debate over who should be screened for lung cancer, a leading medical speciality group has issued new guidelines recommending that doctors offer annual low-dose CT (computed tomography) scanning to people whose age and smoking history puts them at significant risk of lung cancer. That means current smokers aged 55 to 74 with more than 30 pack-years of smoking, or former smokers with that profile who have quit within the last 15 years, said the American College of Chest Physicians. That was the population in whom the largest-ever lungcancer-screening study, the National Lung Screening Test, found CT screening cuts deaths from lung cancer. A pack-year is a measure defined as smoking 20 cigarettes a day for a year or any equivalent, such as two packs a day for six months. That describes an estimated 7 million people, says chest physician David Midthun of the Mayo Clinic. The NLST, which studied 53,000 current or former heavy smokers, concluded in 2011 that CT scanning reduced mortality from lung cancer in this high-risk group by 20 per cent compared to no screening or to X-rays. CT finds small cancers, which can be cured with surgery, that X-rays cannot. But other medical groups that have weighed in on annual CT screening for lung cancers cast a wider net. Last year, for instance, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) recommended that people 50 (not 55) or older who have at least 20 (not 30) pack years of smoking plus one additional risk factor, such as having chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder or a close relative with lung cancer, also be screened.

Stolen

Will Montgomery (Nicolas Cage) is a master thief who gets double-crossed in a heist gone awry and sent to prison for eight years. Upon his release he’s ready to leave his criminal past behind and try to rebuild a relationship with his estranged daughter Allison – but the FBI and his old cohorts believe that he’s hidden the $10 million loot from the heist, so his old partner Vincent (Josh Lucas) kidnaps Allison and demands the entire $10 million as ransom. Montgomery only has one day to get the ransom – but, much to the disbelief of the FBI, he doesn’t actually have the money. Instead, he teams up with his old partner in crime, the sexy and smart Riley (Malin Akerman), to pull off one more heist and get his daughter back alive before it’s too late.

WHAT THE CRITICS SAID Pro/Mixed: “At this point, it’s possible even Nicolas Cage can’t tell his movies apart, both because he makes so many of them, and because they’re so similar that they tend to bleed together. From the outside, they look borderline-identical, but there’s u l t i mately a big difference be-

tween the over-the-top awesomeness of the hilariously histrionic Drive Angry and the over-the-top awfulness of Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance. Or to cite a more germane example, there’s a large gap between the forgettable thriller-by-numbers sub-mediocrity of the recent New Orleans thriller Seeking Justice, and the memorable-for-allthe-wrong reasons New Orleans thriller Stolen… “As the supporting cast of the similar oddity Trespass can attest, acting opposite Cage in a shameless B-movie represents an irresistible invitation to overact. Stolen is distinguished and redeemed largely by Lucas’ exquisitely hammy, frothing-at-themouth craziness. With his ratty, dyed-blond hair, scraggly beard, and manic eyes, Lucas looks and acts like a cracked-out, one-legged Kurt Cobain who turned to crime and cab-driving after giving up on music. Lucas seems intent on outcrazying Cage in his own film; he succeeds with help from dialogue running the gamut from slangy to nearincomprehensible (‘This is an ace boon swipe, Gum. There’s not another one of these in the headlights for a long while’) to hilariously pulpy. (‘I was a golden boy, dollface! Now I’m a freaking Picasso!’) Meanwhile, Cage is uncharacteristically muted. He seems to have given up on making art long ago; these days, all he wants to do is entertain, and with Stolen, he succeeds, albeit only on the guilty-pleasure level.” Nathan Rabin, The A.V. Club (US) Mixed: “On first impression, one imagines that two steps went into conceiving Stolen, a lively but utterly scatterbrained action film that has Nicolas Cage playing a man trying to track down his kidnapped daughter: 1) Watch Taken; 2) Consult a thesaurus. However, it turns out the movie seems to take its cues less from Liam Neeson’s steely determination than from its own star’s brand of straight-faced goofiness. Director Simon West plays it light – giving the action sequences the aerated gloss of a heist flick – while Josh Lucas seems to be trying his hardest to beat Cage at his own over-the-top game as the grimy, nutso kidnapper with a missing leg and an absurdly single-minded vendetta … The longest stretch of logical plotting lasts about forty seconds, and the deeprooted silliness makes it hard to take anything in the film seriously. But at least it has the decency never to ask us to.” Keith Staskiewicz, Entertainment Weekly (US) Anti: “This workmanlike thriller stars Nicolas Cage as a thief recently released from prison and trying to go straight, but forced to confront his past when his daughter is kidnapped by an old gang member (Josh Lucas). As

Hitchcock

Stolen Cage sets about making up the missing millions from an earlier heist to secure his daughter’s freedom, hardnosed FBI man Danny Huston shadows his every move and is ready to pounce. “It’s a familiar premise, and

was handled with some flair in the Liam Neeson action yarn Taken, but here there are just too many standard movie conventions and too few surprises. Director Simon West (who last teamed up with Cage on Con Air) ticks

every race-against-time box imaginable as the hammy criminal leads chew the scenery, with only Huston delivering a remotely convincing performance.” Terry Staunton, Radio Times (UK)

Happy Birthday H4C THE HOME for Cooperation (H4C) celebrates its two-year anniversary this month. To commemorate the occasion, The Association for Historical Dialogue & Research (AHDR) and the European Commission Representation in Cyprus are co-organising a day of festivities at the premises tomorrow, which will include the launch of the two new initiatives of the EC Representation in Cyprus, The Meeting Point and lemonCY.eu, along with various other activities that honour multiculturalism. Since its inauguration in 2011, H4C works as a shared space for intercommunal cooperation and dialogue, hosting a library and archive, conference and exhibition spaces, as well as offices accommodating a number of NGOs. The idea behind the Home resulted from the efforts of the AHDR, a civil society organisation formed in 2003 by educators and researchers with an interest in fostering dialogue and cooperation across Cyprus on the teaching and learning of history. The H4C is the first centre in Cyprus to promote the collective efforts of civil society in engaging in historical inquiry, contemporary understanding and peace building. During the first year of its life H4C has become a favourite hub for NGOs with bi-communal fields of action. As a landmark building located within the Ledra Palace crossing, the H4C is already proving successful in the process of transforming the Buffer Zone from a symbol of separation to a symbol of cooperation and strengthening civil society in Cyprus. The birthday revelry also coincides with Europe Day. On May 9, 1950, Robert Schuman, the first President of the European Parliamentary Assembly, presented his proposal to create an organised Europe, indispensable to the maintenance of peaceful relations. This proposal, known as the Schuman declaration, is considered to be the beginning of the creation of what is now the European Union. Europe Day normally marked every May 9, are activities and events that bring Europe closer to its citizens and the peoples of the Union closer to one another. Join the H4C for a fun-filled day of merriment on Saturday. Events kick-off at 4pm with the launch of The Meeting Point. Originally it was scheduled to be launched in March 19, but was postponed due to organisational reasons. The project aims to provide grassroots services tailored to local needs, which enable citizens

in Cyprus to obtain free of charge information, advice, assistance and answers to questions about the Union’s priorities, legislation, policies and programmes. lemonCY.eu will be a trilingual web space where news from one of the main two communities on the island will be available in both languages. lemonCY.eu is established under the auspices of the Yenidüzen newspaper, with support and funding from the European Commission Representation in Cyprus. It is the Representation’s view that the existence of such an online space will facilitate mutual understanding and dialogue. Visitors will also have the opportunity to visit the DigiMe photo exhibition, showcasing photographs from the competitions supported by the Representation of the European Commission in Cyprus of 2011 and 2012 on the themes of Climate Change & Energy (2011) and Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations (2012). What better way is there to celebrate diversity and multiculturalism than by sharing food and customs with each other? The event invites people from different cultures to show off their local cuisine by cooking up their specialities and inviting the rest of the community to come along and sample the traditional fare. Also on the agenda, people of all ages will have the opportunity to enjoy a traditional folk dance performance by the Hasder youth group. Other highlights of the day include live music performances by Mima and traditional music group Oi Las featuring Umut Albayrak. Mima offers music-making and song writing workshops in communities around the world, and trains young leaders to lead these workshops in their home communities. Their goal is to help people create, communicate and cultivate a better understanding of themselves and the world around them.

organic agriculture, while promoting an alternative, sustainable and healthy lifestyle for young people in the present socio-economic climate. During the day visitors will have the opportunity to participate in workshops on how to make bread, marmalades, as well as how to compost and use microorganisms. There will be 15 minute (one-to-one) naturopathy consultations. Naturopathy takes a holistic approach to your healing whereby one treats the whole body and identifies the underlying causes of your health issues not just the symptoms. You can also learn how aquaponics works. Aquaponics is a method of combined fish and vegetable farming that requires no soil. The farmer cultivates freshwater fish (aquaculture) and plants (hydroponics) in a recirculating water

Tomorrow Other Events Check out people, not books THE Cyprus Youth Council will be lending out asylum seekers and refugees this weekend. It’s part of the human library event being held in collaboration with the Representation in Cyprus of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), tomorrow morning. Everyone has a story to tell. And there’s no better read than the book of human experience. The Human Library gives us all the chance to hear the real-life accounts that we may not usually get the opportunity to come across. The Human Library, known also as Living Library, has become a widely popular concept since its initiation over a decade ago by the Danish group, Stop The Violence. The inspiration behind the project was to fight stereotypes and promote dialogue in the community. The idea behind the Human Library is not overly complex. Instead of loaning your favourite bestseller, you get to have a natter to ‘people on loan’, or ‘living books’, from all walks of life. The human books typically represent stigmatised or marginalised groups of people – religious minorities, sexual minorities and others exposed to misconceptions and prejudice. The hope is that curious readers will get to know these people on an individual level and learn

system that exchanges nutrients between the two. During the day young and older visitors can join the various tasks (like planting seeds) that will be executed in the garden. All the activities are open to everyone and free of charge, and participants can bring containers for the bread and marmalades and clothes to mend. Please be aware that in case of rain the event will be moved to next Saturday, May 18. Collective Bahçe Learn how to plant seeds, make bread, marmalades, compost, sew, take care of your health and discuss aquaponics. May 11. Community Garden Collective Bahçe, Linear Volunteers Park, Kaimakli, (the former railway track between V. Voulgaroktou and Smirnis Street, Nicosia. 11am-8pm. Tel: 99-583947. utopiacollectiva@gmail.com. https://collectivebahce.wordpress.com more about their beliefs. So far, human libraries have connected thousands of readers with human books in over 65 countries from Australia to Cyprus. The ‘human books’ on loan at the Nicosia event will include members of Cyprus’ refugee community. As in every Human Library, readers can ‘borrow’ a ‘refugee-book’ for a while and ‘read it’. In other words, the reader can engage in a conversation with the refugee and be informed: why this person is now living among us; what forced him/her to flee their country; about his/her life in Cyprus. The event is free of charge and open to all ages and will allow readers 30 minutes to discuss with their chosen book and ask questions about their experiences, lifestyle, job, beliefs and background. It should be noted that due to the personal nature of the discussions, each book is read by a maximum of three readers. Everyone is encouraged to pop by and loan one of the refugees or asylum seekers who will be sharing their stories tomorrow at the Youth Hostel of ONEK (opposite the church of Panagia Chrysaliniotissa in old Nicosia). And remember not to judge a book by their cover. Human Library on Refugees Join the Human (or Living) Library; ‘borrow’ a ‘refugee-book’ ‘read it’; and find out more about refugees and asylum seekers living in Cyprus. May 11. Youth Hostel of ONEK, at 30-32 Chrysaliniotissa Street (opposite the church of Panagia Chrysaliniotissa in the old Nicosia).10am12. Free. Tel: 99-513531

B-Girl (LTV, 21.00) Angel, played by Julie ‘Jules’ Urich (hi Julie, I’m sorry ‘Jules’), is a breakdancer. She’s a B-girl, though she also has a rage inside that “says to me ‘Be, girl. Just be’.” Alas, she breaks up with a thug who takes it badly, and assaults her brutally; the muscles she’s made from all that dancing stopped the knife, says the doctor - but no dancing muscles can stop her sinking into depression, at least till she perks up and trains her battered body “to claim her place in the world of underground hip-hop”. A dance film with the usual clichés, our heroine forced to fend off street-hardened rivals who don’t take her seriously, at least till they check out her moves - and it’s very much (yes) a B-

movie, but at least the actors are authentic B-people. “Jules Urich is one of the world’s best female breakdancers,” notes DVD Verdict, “and she is joined by people like Jonathan ‘Legacy’ Perez, Ivan ‘Flipz’ Velez, Ryan ‘Rainen’ Paguio, and Wesley Jonathan”. So why doesn’t Wesley have a cute nickname? Made in 2009.

Chernobyl Diaries (Novacinema3, 23.00) Three decades after that unfortunate nuclear incident, Chernobyl is back - first as the backdrop to the climax in A Good Day to Die Hard, now as the setting for this horror film written by Oren Peli, the man behind Paranormal Activity. The usual American young-

Chernobyl Diaries

sters go on a trip to Europe, their itinerary taking in not just the Eiffel Tower but also a spot of “extreme tourism” - a few hours in Pripyat, abandoned former home of the people who worked in the nuclear reactor at Chernobyl, roaming the empty town behind a tour guide with a Geiger counter. But why won’t their car start when it’s time to go? Is that a face at the window, dimly visible in the background when they take a group photo? Who are the weird people following them? “They’re not following us,” says one of the boys; “They’re hunting us!”. Not a hit, being weak and derivative with annoying characters - but any place that’s survived John McClane and nuclear radiation can probably survive a bad horror flick. Made in 2012.

ARIES March 21 - April 20

LEO July 23 - August 22

SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 21

Your word skills will take on a silkier vibe in the next three weeks as Venus passes through the vibrant energies of Gemini. Getting together with the important people in your life and sharing the good things can certainly bring great pleasure. You might decide to organize a barbecue or host a party, and can do these wonderfully well.

You could attract the limelight today, and this could see you receive some plaudits. If you have been feeling the pressure of your responsibilities, you may be pleasantly surprised by who speaks out for you, or gives you discreet support. The chances are, that you may have more fans and be more appreciated than you had realised.

The next three weeks can be fabulous for restoring harmony and balance into your relationships - that is of course, if any are currently out of kilter. Even if none are, this can be a fab time to forge new alliances, to build co-operation, and also to become more conscious of the needs of those people you interact with closely.

TAURUS April 21 - May 21

VIRGO August 23 - September 23

CAPRICORN December 22 - January 20

Your love of the good things in life is set to be accentuated now, and whether your personal preference for these comes through shopping at your local mall, natural products, or those which are more exclusive, it doesn’t really matter. The trick is not to let any upsurge in your income get spent too quickly, for there is a chance of this now.

If you are someone with a natural love of gleaning information, you can find yourself proactive today, perhaps searching for insights online, in your local library, or conversely, extending connections further afield. This would also be a good day to check out academic or training course possibilities. Curiosity can certainly be an asset.

Muster as much mental dexterity as possible today. The faster you are on the uptake, the better you can do. This can see you multi task, be inventive, and not short of applying your great sense of fun either. In fact, by making people laugh, you can make some serious points in a way which will make them much more receptive.

GEMINI May 22 - June 21

LIBRA September 24 - October 23

AQUARIUS January 21 - February 19

Someone may drop a major hint in your direction today, and it may be that they’d like to get to know you a whole lot better. Then again, if you have been mulling over your options in the romantic sphere, the extra magic that Venus moving into Gemini will bestow upon you, can see you become more optimistic and outgoing.

You may need to probe some information, and then ask some pertinent questions. However, if this is so, the arrival of Venus in your sister Air sign of Gemini today, suggests that the best way to do this is diplomatically. If you do try to “pin” someone’s position they could prove elusive, so better to tease what you want out of them.

Venus glides into a fab zone for your sign today, opening up the proverbial window of opportunity as far as your love and social lives are concerned. If you have felt more like spending time at home, even alone in solitude, this is a reminder not to forsake the other part of your nature, which is more gregarious and outgoing.

CANCER June 22 - July 22

SCORPIO October 24 - November 22

PISCES February 20 - March 20

Mercury and the Sun are very close together in the part of your solar horoscope that influences your long term future. This combination can see you make some enlightened choices, because it adds energy to your thinking. Unfortunately, it can also see you make hasty ones too. So, with this in mind, carefully weigh up your options.

The most passionate side of your nature is set to be aroused in the next three weeks. This could see more intensity creep into your love life. But today, ironically, you are asked to retain both an air of detachment, and an ability to stand back from events, and not get too caught up in emotion. Talk with a trusted confidant, if need be.

Words can come easily today. But as much as this may give you extra zip and vivacity, equally, you may say something in a split second which you may later regret. If you are meeting anyone who tends to have a more sensitive side to their nature, just be mindful of how easy it is to say the wrong thing. You may talk to a sibling too today.

Sport CSKA want Olympiakos revenge in crunch Euroleague rematch

Heat respond with huge statement win over Bulls

Semi-final contest a repeat of last year’s thrilling final

By Simon Evans

By Zoran Milosavljevic

IN BRIEF

BACK for his second spell in charge of CSKA Moscow, coach Ettore Messina aims to lift the weight of last season’s Euroleague defeat by Olympiakos Piraeus from his players’ shoulders when the two teams meet in the 2013 Final Four in London today. The semi-final contest will be a repeat of the 2012 final in Istanbul, when six-time winners CSKA blew a 19point lead in the second half and saw Olympiakos forward Georgios Printezis sink the game-winning shot on the buzzer. Messina, who had joined the Los Angeles Lakers as an assistant coach after steering CSKA to a pair of Euroleague titles during his first spell in charge from 2005-2009, then replaced Lithuanian Jonas Kazlauskas in a bid to restore the Russian club’s domination in Europe. “I can only say that I am new and fresh and didn’t go through the difficult night that some of my players did in that game,” the Italian told the competition’s official website (www.euroleague. net). “I don’t think those memories can be erased. It’s part of life and they can live with it and deal with the bad memories if they are surrounded by support, but no one can really know what shadow will be on the minds of the players from last year. “Apart from that, we need to treat this as just another game. To be in the Final Four again means that we took

Greek giants Olympiakos celebrate after six-time winners CSKA blew a 19-point lead in the second half of the 2012 final. Olympiakos forward Georgios Printezis sank the game-winning shot on the buzzer to win the title the right decisions and that the players we chose showed they deserved the trust of the club,” he said. Having won four Euroleague titles and reached nine finals from as many attempts, the 53-year-old from Catania will bank on his record as much as on the quality of his talentpacked roster which includes four Serbia internationals and former Toronto Raptors guard Sonny Weems. Olympiakos will again be the dark horses but their coach Georgios Bartzokas, who succeeded Serbian Dusan Ivkovic at the helm, was confident his team could repeat last year’s feat against their stronger and wealthier rivals. “We are the outsiders again but I will try to convince my players that the same can happen as last year,” he said. “There are a lot of differences, as both CSKA and Olympiakos have new coaches

and some different tactics but once again CSKA will be under big pressure because they are perhaps the best team in Europe with the biggest budget and an experienced coach.” The second contest for a berth in Sunday’s final features Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona, who will head into the O2 Arena in contrasting moods after taking different routes to reach the showpiece event.

EIGHT-TIME WINNERS Eight-time winners Real, who are seeking their first title in Europe’s premier club basketball competition since 1995, enjoyed a 3-0 sweep of Maccabi Tel Aviv in their best-of-five quarter-final series, having also secured the top spot in the Spanish league ahead of the playoffs. Barcelona, champions in 2003 and 2010, have had

a topsy-turvy season and reached the Final Four only after a dramatic 3-2 defeat of Panathinaikos Athens, having fought back from a 2-1 deficit in their gruelling series marred by crowd trouble in the Greek capital. Barca will sweat on the fitness of their towering Australia centre Nathan Jawai, who faces a race against time to recover from a foot injury, while influential American forward Pete Mickeal is out with long-term illness. Coach Xavi Pasqual acknowledged that Barcelona’s entire roster would have to carry extra weight to compensate for Mickeal’s absence and will in all likelihood rely on the versatility of Croatia centre Ante Tomic, named in the Euroleague’s 2012-13 first team. “Pete is a unique player due to his own particular skills and a lot of the things we did were based on those skills,

so we had to adapt and find another way to win games,” said Pasqual. “The series against Panathinaikos wore us down a lot and contrary to previous years there is less time to recover but I think we will arrive in London in good shape.” Pasqual’s Real counterpart Pablo Laso, whose team warmed up for the Clasico with a 78-65 Spanish league win over Barcelona on April 28, said containing Barcelona playmaker and the Euroleague’s all-time leading scorer Juan Carlos Navarro would be crucial. “We know that Navarro is a special player, hard to guard and able to generate baskets on his own,” he said. “But if you try to cover Navarro you will be left uncovered somewhere else and players like Jawai, Tomic and (Brazilpoint guard Marcelinho) Huertas can damage you.”

THE Miami Heat bounced back from their seriesopening loss to Chicago to thrash the Bulls 115-78 and level their Eastern Conference semi-final at 1-1. The 37-point margin was the heaviest defeat the Chicago Bulls had suffered in a playoff game and the biggest ever post-season margin of victory for the Heat. The Bulls upset a rusty Miami in Game One on Monday but the defending NBA champions responded with an aggressive opening quarter that turned into a masterclass, then a massacre. Monday’s defeat had clearly provided the Heat with a wake-up call that resulted in a performance worthy of the defending champions. “I think this was our first real adversity of the season, losing Game One at home was tough,” said Miami’s Dwyane Wade. “We had to go back and look at ourselves in the mirror, look at each other in the eye and say ‘listen, what reason are we here for?’. “I think we did a good job of coming out early in the game and setting the tone,” he added. The margin of victory could have been even more emphatic given Miami led by 46 points with 8:16 remaining in the fourth quarter before resting their first choice players.

No more blunders, Japan Olympic chief warns

Technical director Allison leaves Lotus Formula 1

Mo Farah eyeing five London wins in a row

THE Japanese Olympic Committee (JOC) chief has urged his colleagues to choose their words carefully and avoid a repeat of a recent gaffe that may jeopardise Tokyo’s chances of hosting the 2020 Games. Tokyo’s outspoken governor, Naoki Inose, who heads the city’s Olympic bid, apologised last week for ‘inappropriate’ comments he made about rival candidate Istanbul and Islamic countries. JOC president Tsunekazu Takeda said Tokyo could not afford any more mistakes. “I plead with you to observe the rules on bid activities and make sure this kind of trouble does not occur a second time,” Takeda told his colleagues.

HIGHLY-RATED technical director James Allison is leaving Lotus and will be replaced by Nick Chester, the Formula One team said this week. The announcement before the first race of the European season in Spain this weekend will be seen as a blow for Finnish Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen, the 2007 world champion who is second in the standings to Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel. Allison has been with British-based Lotus, previously Renault, since 2005 after previous stints in the 1990s when they raced as Benetton. No details were given about his likely destination.

DOUBLE Olympic champion Mo Farah will target a fifth straight victory in the London 10,000 road race later this month, organisers have announced. Farah has been ever-present since the event’s launch in 2008 and has set two British records during his four wins. The 30-year-old’s triumph last year came ahead of his victories over 5,000m and 10,000m at the London Olympics. The Somalia-born athlete will use the event, on May 27, as preparation for the World Championships in August.

From red carpet to testy challenge for in-form Woods

Azarenka boils over in surprise exit, Robson loses thriller

Elite field assembles for Players Champs

VICTORIA Azarenka lost her temper and was docked a point for smashing her racket on the way to a surprise 1-6 6-2 6-3 defeat by unseeded Russian Ekaterina Makarova in the Madrid Open second round. The Belarussian world number three, runner-up in the last two editions of the premier clay event and coming back from an injury layoff, appeared firmly in control against her 24thranked opponent after cruising through the first set. However, Makarova raised her game to take the second set and after Azarenka smashed her racket on the ground at 3-3 in the decider the Australian Open champion’s game fell apart and she suffered her first defeat of the year. The umpire had already warned Azarenka at the end of the first set and when she took out her frustration on her racket she was given a point penalty. “I just felt it was a weird call for me because I had no idea I had a code violation,” she told a news conference. “But, I mean, it happened. It didn’t help, for sure, but it’s okay. It’s my own fault,” added the 23-year-old. Azarenka’s vanquisher in the 2011 Madrid final, Czech Petra Kvitova, was another high profile casualty. Seeded eight in the latest edition, Kvitova surrendered a one-set lead to fall 2-6 6-2 6-3 to Slovakian wildcard Daniela Hantuchova. British teenager Laura Robson failed to build on her fine win against fourthseeded Pole Agnieszka Radwanska in the second round when she lost 5-7 6-2 7-6 to former world number one Ana Ivanovic of Serbia in the night session. Seeded 16th, Ivanovic was a break down to the 19-year-old in the deciding set but the former French Open champion fought back to take the tie break 7-5 as Robson double faulted on match point to miss out on a place in the last eight. “I’ll definitely take the positives out of the match,” Robson said. “It’s been a good week of tennis for me and my level has picked up a lot since Estoril last week,” added Robson, who is currently without a coach after splitting with Zeljko Krajan just before the Madrid event. “It’s not all bad and I’ve still got Rome to look forward to next week. It was a great match from her and hopefully we’ll have some more great matches in the future.”

By Larry Fine TIGER Woods may get the red carpet treatment wherever he goes but that will be of little help to the world number one at TPC Sawgrass, site of this week’s Players Championship. Woods won his only Players title in 15 starts in 2001 and in addition to a field that includes the world’s top 30 golfers, and 38 of the top 40, there is the diabolical Pete Dye layout that has frustrated contenders for four decades. The 14-time major winner measures success by only the biggest championships, but he grudgingly admits that next in line after the Masters, US Open, British Open and PGA Championship would be the Players Championship. “I think we have our four major championships, and that’s that,” Woods said when asked if the Players could be considered the fifth major. “But if there was going to be another one, this would be it. This is the best field that we have.” Woods could be primed to become only the fifth golfer to win the tournament more than once since he is currently the hottest player in the world with three wins

this season that helped him regain the world number one ranking from Rory McIlroy. He was also in the lead at Augusta National before his third shot at the par-five 15th in the second round of last month’s Masters hit the flagstick and ricocheted into the water. The next morning he was hit with a controversial twoshot penalty - some called for his disqualification - for taking an improper drop following a review that was prompted by a phone call from a TV viewer. Woods, who carded a triple-bogey on the hole, eventually finished tied for fourth, four shots out of a playoff won by Australian Adam Scott. He said the Masters disappointment stayed with him for about a week. “When I was away from it, I was reflecting on ... the things that I did right but also the things that I did wrong that week,” Woods, who got the red carpet treatment at a New York fashion awards show this week with girlfriend and Olympic champion skier Lindsey Vonn, said this week. “Unfortunately I hit a good shot and got a bad break. But I still had an opportunity over the next 36 holes

to get it back, and I sort of had my opportunities to do it and I just didn’t do it.” Winning at TPC Sawgrass is also no easy matter. “It’s one of those courses where they’ve got some tough lines, and if you’re not playing well, you’re going to get exposed,” said Woods, who has just one top-10 finish in Florida since his 2001 triumph. “You miss these greens at all, you’ve got some of the weirdest, funky little shots that you’ll ever face.” Defending champion Matt Kuchar teed it up with Woods and reigning end-of-season FedExCup winner Brandt Snedeker in the opening round as he embarks on a campaign to become the first repeat winner of the Players Championship. “I think this is a great opportunity,” said Kuchar, who won this year’s WGCAccenture Match Play, tied for eighth at the Masters and has had two other top 10s in 2013. “They tell me nobody’s defended the title. I don’t think that this is necessarily a curse that nobody’s defended the title here. It’s just kind of one of those stats you pull out, and I’d like to be the first guy that is able to repeat.”

Troubled Beale stood down from Super Rugby again By Ian Ransom

Kurtley Beale, one of the brightest talents in the Wallabies’ star-studded backline, needs to control his temper

KURTLEY Beale’s hopes of earning selection for the Wallabies against the British and Irish Lions have been jeopardised after the troubled back was stood down from Super Rugby side Melbourne Rebels yesterday for a second breach of discipline this season. The 24-year-old was sidelined for more than a month for punching two team mates in an alcohol-fuelled incident in South Africa in March and will miss at least another week in his latest suspension, coming days after his contrite return to the team. “Simply, there were a series of behavioural guidelines that he signed up to, and they’ve been breached,” Rebels CEO Rob Clarke told Reuters, without providing details. “He’s accepted responsibility for it.” Clarke declined to comment on the nature of the breaches, but local media reported that Beale broke a team-imposed alcohol ban by drinking at a social function with close friends at the weekend, which

included at least one Rebels team mate. Beale, one of the brightest talents in the Wallabies’ starstudded backline, has been stood down for the Rebels’ match against the Blues this weekend, and is likely to face further sanction after the team consults with the Australian Rugby Union and the players’ association. Sydney-born Beale was sent home from South Africa in disgrace after punching Welsh captain Gareth Delve and fellow back Cooper Vuna on a team bus following the Rebels’ record 64-7 drubbing by the Durban-based Sharks. He was stood down indefinitely and ordered to undergo counselling but made his return to the team with his team mates’ blessing last week. Beale showed his value immediately upon his reinstatement, coming off the bench to score a try and set up another in a narrow home loss to the defending champion Chiefs last week. The dominant performance raised expectations Beale would be rehabilitated in time to be picked for the

Wallabies squad for the three Lions Tests in June and July, but his latest transgression may put that on ice. Australia coach Robbie Deans is set to name a preliminary squad of 25 on May 19, but will add a further six players when the Super Rugby season pauses for the international break in June. Clarke denied Beale was at the ‘last-chance saloon’ after the South Africa incident and said he believed he could win back the team’s trust if he could stick to his off-field programme. “I certainly hope so,” Clarke said when asked whether Beale could remain a Rebels player. “That is what everybody wants and that is what we hope Kurtley wants as well.” Beale has previously been in hot water for off-field indiscretions, and was charged with assault last year after a scuffle with security staff outside a Brisbane bar during the Wallabies Test series against Wales. The charge was dropped after an agreement by the parties not to take the matter to court, police said last month.

Real assistant Karanka shrugs off Mourinho jeers

Rio politicians want Havelange stadium renamed

Fans turn on Portuguese at the Bernabeu

By Pedro Fonseca

REAL Madrid assistant coach Aitor Karanka defended the record of Jose Mourinho after the Portuguese was roundly booed by fans at the Bernabeu before a 6-2 thrashing over Malaga. Mourinho is widely expected to leave Madrid at the end of the season in favour of a return to Chelsea, and the home fans appear to have turned on their coach since the Blancos were eliminated at the semi-final stage of the Champions League to Borussia Dortmund last week. The coach further divided fans’ opinion with two fiery press conferences in the last week, in which he criticised club captain Iker Casillas and centre-back Pepe. Mourinho’s name was whistled when it was read out by the stadium announcer before the match with Malaga, but Karanka sought to play down the significance of the fans’ ill-feeling towards his boss. He said: “We don’t pay much attention to that. In any case, the fans express their feelings while the coaching staff try to get the best performance out of the players. However, we respect their views.” Asked if Mourinho had given the half-time team talk, Karanka responded: “It was the same person that always gives it, the same guy that won the league last year.”

Striker Gonzalo Higuain was also the victim of fan derision when he came on to replace Karim Benzema in the second half, but Karanka insisted the Argentinian still has the backing of the club. “That’s football. Last year the fans were shouting ‘Pipa (Higuain’s nick-name) please stay’ after we won the league in Bilbao. We know he’s not in the best form, but he has to keep on working. He knows what the coaching staff think of him.” Pepe was left out of the squad four days after saying that Mourinho had “shown a lack of respect” to Casillas in an interview after the 4-3 win over Valladolid, but Karanka insisted the defender had been excluded for footballing reasons, pointing to the form of 19-year-old centre-back Raphael Varane, who has been first-choice centre-back alongside Sergio Ramos since March. “The squads are decided on each player’s performances and everyone can see how good Varane has been,” he said, before delivering a broadside to assembled journalists. “Before you used to rip Pepe apart, now you are his defenders. It surprises me,” he said. The assistant coach gave no clues about where his future or that of Mourinho

lay, but said that he would remain at Madrid if the Portuguese did. “I’ll decide when the moment arrives. If Mourinho continues, I’ll stay with him, if he doesn’t, we’ll have to see. But there is still time to carry on working and enjoying myself here.” Cristiano Ronaldo hit his 200th goal for Madrid in the demolition of Manuel Pellegrini’s side, but also had a penalty saved by Willy Caballero. The former Manchester United player, who has been linked with a return to his old club, has not signed a new contract with Real Madrid yet, with his current deal set to expire in 2015, but Karanka said he believed the forward should stay at the Bernabeu. “Madrid is the ideal place for Cristiano, and he is phenomenal for Madrid,” he said. Raul Albiol, Mesut Ozil, Karim Benzema, Luka Modric and Angel Di Maria also got on the scoresheet for the Blancos, while Roque Santa Cruz and Vitorino Antunes replied for the visitors, who had Sergio Sanchez and Martin Demichelis sent off. Mesut Ozil had to leave the pitch before the end of the game with an apparent ankle injury, but Karanka was unable to give details about the seriousness of the injury.

Napoli qualify for Champions League, Juve interrupted By Brian Homewood

Napoli sealed a second-place finish behind champions Juventus with two games to spare with a 3-0 win at Bologna

NAPOLI qualified for the Champions League group stage by winning 3-0 at Bologna on Wednesday night and two goals from Mario Balotelli kept AC Milan on course for the qualifying round with a 4-0 victory at Pescara. Juventus, crowned Serie A champions on Sunday, won 1-0 at Atalanta in a match interrupted for 10 minutes in the first half as rival fans aimed fireworks at each other. Inter Milan’s accidentprone season continued as midfielder Ricardo Alvarez produced a bizarre penalty miss while goalkeeper Samir Handanovic also blundered in a 3-1 defeat to Lazio at a restless San Siro. Marek Hamsik, Edinson Cavani, from a penalty and Blerim Dzemaili scored in quick succession early in the second half to guarantee Napoli a second-place finish behind champions Juventus

with two games to spare. They have 75 points, seven more than AC Milan with two games left to play. Napoli produced a disjointed first-half performance but took the lead eight minutes after the interval when Hamsik turned in Dzemaili’s pass. Ten minutes later, Cavani was hauled down by Bologna goalkeeper Dejan Stojanovic and converted the penalty himself. Four minutes after that, a powerful run by the Uruguayan ended with the ball running loose to Dzemaili and the Swiss slotted in the third past hapless Austrian teenager Stojanovic, who shipped six goals against Lazio on Sunday. Serie A leading scorer Cavani took his tally to 27, although it is far from certain he will stay for next season as speculation mounts that one of Europe’s wealthiest clubs will cough up the estimated 60 million euro asking price.

Napoli reached the last 16 of the Champions League in 2011/12, when they made their debut in competition. Juventus rested several first-choice players and an 18th-minute goal from Alessandro Matri gave them their ninth consecutive league win and took them on to 86 points from 36 games, 11 clear of Napoli. The crowd trouble broke out in the 28th minute and was calmed when Atalanta players went over to appeal to their fans to stop and Juventus coach Antonio Conte did the same for the visiting supporters. Balotelli hit the bar and converted a penalty in the first 10 minutes to set Milan on the way to an easy win at relegated Pescara, who have taken only two points from their last 17 matches. Sulley Muntari and Mathieu Flamini scored either side of halftime before Super Mario completed the rout, leaving Milan with 68 points, four ahead of Fiorentina.

RIO de Janeiro politicians presented a bill this week requesting that the name of former FIFA president Joao Havelange be removed from the city’s Olympic stadium. Havelange quit as FIFA’s honorary president last month, shortly before the publication of a report by the federation’s ethics committee into allegations he took bribes from the ISL sports marketing company while president of football’s governing body. “The name Joao Havelange is today linked to fraud investigations and scandals at FIFA,” said city councillor Renato Cinco, one of the proponents of the legislation. “It doesn’t make sense for a city which is going to host the World Cup and Olympic Games have the name of its stadium with this reference.” The stadium, often known as the Engenhao but officially named the Joao Havelange Olympic stadium, was built for the 2007 Panamerican games but was closed for repairs in March after structural problems were found in the roof. It is due to be used for the athletics events when Rio hosts the 2016 Olympics, although the opening and closing ceremonies will be at the Maracana. The councillors have suggested changing the stadium’s name to Joao Saldanha, who coached Brazil in the 1970 World Cup qualifying competition. “The change of name to Joao Saldanha is an attempt to resolve not just a matter of ethics, considering that Joao Havelange is not worthy of this tribute, but also to bring fresh air to this stadium built on the basis of overblown costs and with structural problems,” said councillor Eliomar Coelho, another of the authors of the bill. A Swiss prosecutor said in a legal document last July that Havelange and former FIFA executive committee member Ricardo Teixeira, took multi-million bribes from ISL on World Cup deals in the 1990s. The FIFA ethics committee report also said that “not inconsiderable amounts” were channelled to Havelange and Teixeira from ISL, and there was no indication either of them gave any service in return. Teixeira, formerly Havelange’s son-in-law, was president of the Brazilian Football Confederation from 1989 until last year.

Sport Ferguson retirement gets royal treatment City have won last seven matches between the sides without conceding from media

History favours Manchester City in Cup final with Wigan By Mike Collett WIGAN Athletic will have to defy recent history as well as shrugging off the spectre of relegation if they are to cause one of the biggest FA Cup final upsets for years and beat Manchester City tomorrow. City, FA Cup winners in 2011 and Premier League champions last season, start as the overwhelming favourites for the match at Wembley (7.15pm) but Wigan have shown at times this season, especially in their 3-0 FA Cup quarter-final win over Everton, they can spring a surprise. However, not only are Manchester City better in every position than Wigan, they have won the last seven matches between the sides without conceding a goal, outscoring Roberto Martinez’s men 13-0 since March 2010. The last time Wigan beat City was nearly five years ago when goals from Antonio Valencia and an Amr Zaki penalty gave them a 2-1 league win in September 2008. A few weeks later the billionaire Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan of Abu Dhabi bought City and nothing much has been the same since he began ploughing his wealth into the former serial under-achievers. While Wigan, third from bottom in the league, go into their first FA Cup final with two matches left to save themselves from relegation to the Championship, Manchester City head to Wembley Stadium with nothing to fear. Having relinquished their title to Manchester United two weeks ago, they ensured they will qualify for the Champions League next season by beating West Brom-

It’s been a long time: City’s 2011 FA Cup triumph over Stoke ended a barren 35 years for the club without a trophy wich Albion 1-0 on Tuesday. It seems all that can stop them from adding more silverware to their recently acquired collection is a return to the listlessness that damaged their title defence or a sudden collective loss of form. After the two sides won their semi-finals last month, City struggled to beat Wigan in the Premier League at the Etihad Stadium on April 17 until an excellent late winner from Carlos Tevez. However, since then Wigan have been hit by injuries. Those, plus some poor defending in a 3-2 defeat to Swansea City on Tuesday, do not augur well for their

chances in the final. Wigan will be without the authoritative Maynor Figueroa in midfield while centre back Ivan Ramis is still out with a knee injury. Antolin Alcaraz is a doubt after missing the midweek match and Ronnie Stam suffered a suspected broken leg against Swansea. Martinez though, aiming to become the first Spanish coach to win the FA Cup since Rafa Benitez in 2006 with Liverpool, believes his team can save their season. Talking about Wigan’s chances of Premier League survival, he said: “We will never give up and we will never throw the towel in. We

have a lot of injuries at the back and it showed.” Wigan can produce neat, incisive football and in Shaun Maloney have a fine player capable of creating chances and openings from midfield. Ivorian international Arouna Kone has shown an eye for goal in his first season at the club with 13 strikes. Whatever the outcome on Saturday, Wigan are guaranteed a Europa League spot next season. Mancini is attempting to become the first Italian manager to win the FA Cup twice after City’s success two years ago, and will be hoping his club, unlike rivals Manchester United, will not

be looking for a new boss at the end of the season. There has been widespread talk for months that Mancini is on his way out of City, but a second FA Cup win and the chance to regain the league title next season from what will be a United team in transition following Alex Ferguson’s retirement, will give him a strong hand in any negotiations with the club’s owners. City’s 2011 Cup triumph ended a barren 35 years for the club and Mancini may be entitled to believe a third trophy and guaranteed Champions League football next season, will buy him more time.

Villa’s Petrov announces retirement

Aston Villa captain Stiliyan Petrov has announced his retirement following his battle against acute leukaemia

ASTON Villa captain Stiliyan Petrov has announced his retirement following his battle against acute leukaemia. The Bulgarian midfielder was diagnosed with the condition in March last year and is now in remission. In a statement released by Aston Villa, the 33year old said: “It is with a heavy heart that I am announcing my retirement from the game.” Petrov, who joined Villa from Celtic in 2006, is continuing to receive treatment. His popularity at the club has been evident all season with fans applauding throughout the 19th minute of games - in reference to his squad number - in tribute. He said: “I’ve never been a person for making grand statements. “I’ve only ever got on with my job, while remaining grateful to have great team-mates, great people around me and, most of all, a fantastic family. “They have been powerful pillars of support when I have needed them most over the past year. “To my wife, Paulina, and my sons, Kristiyan and Stiliyan, I love you very much. Each and

every day I thank God for giving me the opportunity to still be with my family. “Football has been the other great love of my life, so it is with a heavy heart that I am announcing my retirement from the game. “The emotions are overwhelming really, but the continued support of family, friends and the great people I have come to know will make it easier for me to move on from the only life I’ve ever known.” Petrov now intends to set up a foundation to raise money to address issues around the diagnosis of leukaemia. Petrov feels the quick action after his condition was diagnosed proved critical in his battle. Referring to the moment last March when he fell ill, he said: “Then something crazy happened, something I thought was just a cold but turned out to be something more serious, something life-changing. “I played 90 minutes for Villa against Arsenal at The Emirates and I felt fatigued, not myself at all. “But I thought it was nothing serious. The diagnosis by Dr Richard Lovell was a complete shock.”

SIR Alex Ferguson’s decision to call time on his career after 27 years as manager of Manchester United was given the royal treatment by British media yesterday. Photographs of the 71-yearold Scot, who will retire at the end of the season after a glittering reign at Old Trafford, were plastered on the front and back pages of most newspapers. Several included the kind of souvenir pull-outs usually reserved for royal weddings, deaths and jubilees, chronicling the 13 English league titles, five FA Cups, four League Cups and two European Cups that Ferguson won for United. The front page of mass selling tabloid The Sun displayed a red hairdryer hanging from a hook - a reference to Ferguson’s infamous ‘hairdryer’ treatment. The Daily Mirror’s back page moved the story on with a picture of a smiling Everton manager David Moyes, Ferguson’s likely successor, underneath a headline The Chosen One. Among the forest of eulogies to Ferguson’s remarkable impact on the football landscape was one by the Daily Mail’s Martin Samuel which summed up Ferguson’s genius as ‘being able to mine the hunger of garlanded millionaires’. The Times columnist Simon Barnes described Ferguson as having an ‘appetite for victory that could never be satisfied.’ ‘Like Trafalgar Square without Nelson,’ was Daily Telegraph writer Henry Winter’s neat summing up of life after Ferguson. Others said Ferguson’s exit would leave a ‘yawning vacuum’ and looked at the task facing the next United manager. Debate raged over which of Ferguson’s teams were the best, with some pundits choosing the 1998-99 selection that won the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup and others going for the Eric Cantona inspired vintage of 1993-94.

Ferguson’s influence lives on as United turn to Moyes ‘It’s a great honour. I am delighted that Sir Alex saw fit to recommend me for the job’ By Sonia Oxley

S

IR Alex Ferguson’s influence at Manchester United will continue past his retirement after the Premier League champions followed his advice and appointed David Moyes as their next manager yesterday. Everton boss Moyes, who announced earlier he would be leaving the club after 11 years in charge, was the hot favourite to take over from his fellow Scot at United and has signed a six-year contract from July 1. “When we discussed the candidates that we felt had the right attributes we unanimously agreed on David Moyes,” Ferguson, who is staying at United as an ambassador and director, said in a statement. “David is a man of great integrity with a strong work ethic. I’ve admired his work for a long time and approached him as far back as 1998 to discuss the position of assistant manager here. “He was a young man then at the start of his career and has since gone on to do a magnificent job at Everton. There is no question he has all the qualities we expect of a manager at this Club.” Moyes is braced for the tough job of following Britain’s most successful manager, who is retiring at the end of the season after winning two Champions Leagues, 13 league titles, five FA Cups in

Over to you: Sir Alex Ferguson holds fellow Glaswegian David Moyes in high regard, describing the Everton manager as ‘a man of great integrity with a strong work ethic’ more than 26 years at United. “It’s a great honour to be asked to be the next manager of Manchester United. I am delighted that Sir Alex saw fit to recommend me for the job. I have great respect for everything he has done and for the Football Club,”

the 50-year-old said. “I know how hard it will be to follow the best manager ever, but the opportunity to manage Manchester United isn’t something that comes around very often and I’m really looking forward to taking up the post next season.” Moyes will remain in charge

for Everton’s final two Premier League games of the season against West Ham United and Chelsea. His track record at Everton includes four top-six finishes, a knack for creating competitive teams with only modest resources and a reputation as a gritty, no-nonsense type

of manager in a similar mould to Ferguson. “His hard-working style and steely determination are characteristics we value at the club,” co-owner Joel Glazer said. “We strongly believe he will be able to take up from where Alex is leaving off by continu-

ing this club’s tradition of flair football played by exciting, world class players.” One of Moyes’ first tasks could be to persuade striker Wayne Rooney to stay at the club following newspaper reports the England international had once again asked to leave Old Trafford. A Manchester United spokesman said on Wednesday the player, whose form has been up and down this season, was not for sale. Rooney began his career at Everton under Moyes but the two subsequently fell out over an account in one of Rooney’s autobiographies about how he came to leave Merseyside and sign for United. While Moyes looks forward to his next post, the focus on Merseyside will shift to filling their own vacancy. Wigan’s Roberto Martinez is among the early front-runners but the Spaniard said yesterday his mind was on his club’s battle for Premier League survival and tomorrow’s FA Cup final against Manchester City. Others being touted by local media are Swansea City manager Michael Laudrup, Celtic’s Neil Lennon and retiring club captain Phil Neville. “The chairman, on behalf of the club, would like to place on record his thanks to David for the massive contribution he has made to Everton since his arrival in March 2002. He has been an outstanding manager.”

AVB still chasing Champions League dream By Matt McGeehan

Down to the wire: Andre Villas-Boas is still confident as the all-London battle for the top four nears a conclusion

ANDRE Villas-Boas hopes his Tottenham side’s endeavour is rewarded with a place in the Champions League as the all-London battle for the top four nears a conclusion. Fifth-placed Spurs twice came from behind to draw 2-2 at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night and now sit one point behind Arsenal and three behind Chelsea entering the final two games of the campaign. Spurs also have a far inferior goal difference to their rivals, but Villas-Boas hopes his side’s efforts result in a place among Europe’s elite. “For all of the determination and ambition we’ve showed this season, hopefully we can be rewarded at

the end of it by qualifying,” Villas-Boas said. The Spurs boss recognises his side must rely on slipups and believes the next round of fixtures - Chelsea’s match at Aston Villa tomorrow, Spurs’ Sunday contest with Stoke and Arsenal’s Tuesday clash with FA Cup finalists Wigan - could determine the top-four battle. “This next fixture is decisive for everybody. I think anything can happen, but we don’t depend on ourselves any more. “The reality is that we have to do our job and hopefully something can happen.” Chelsea must wait to secure their Champions League return after being pegged back twice by Spurs. Chelsea interim boss Rafael Benitez was frustrated by his side’s failure to net a

third and end the match as a contest and lamented the defensive failings which contributed to Spurs’ equalisers. Emmanuel Adebayor appeared to be marginally offside in the build-up to Gylfi Sigurdsson’s late strike and Benitez felt fatigue played a part, particularly out wide where Spurs enjoyed supremacy in the latter stages. “We had the chances on counter-attacks to score the third goal and finish the game,” Benitez said. “It was an open game. We were in control and we didn’t win. “Adebayor was offside, but still we have to defend a little bit better. “The tempo of the game was too high. It was massive for both teams.

“We didn’t have legs. We had players that were tired, especially in the wide areas. We had a problem with the Spurs full-backs going forward.” Asked before the confirmation of David Moyes as successor to Manchester United’s Alex Ferguson, whether he would consider the job of Everton manager, Benitez declined to answer. The former Liverpool boss, whose family home is on the Wirral, said: “Still I have to concentrate on (Chelsea’s next match at) Aston Villa.”
