Horror after dog attack kills child Five-year old boy buried amid shock over his death By Peter Stevenson

P

EOPLE islandwide have been left shocked and horrified after a five-yearold boy was killed by an Akita dog while visiting a family friend’s home in the village of Skarinou on Easter Monday. The boy was buried yesterday afternoon and the dog’s owner was released without charge until police complete their investigations, while the one-year-old dog has been put down. The incident happened on Monday at around 1.30pm in front of the boy’s 20-yearold half-sister according to police. The two families were due to have a meal to mark the Easter celebrations, as both the owner of the dog and the child’s father have been close friends for decades. State-pathologist Sophocles Sophocleous said the boy, Eantas Loizou, had died from shock after having his carotid artery severed. Sophocleous also revealed the child had other bites on his neck, his right arm, his head and his back. According to reports young Eantas had been playing with the dog under the watchful eye of his sister who, however, did not manage to react in time once the dog began attacking. The boy was taken to Kofinou medical centre by his father and then by a police patrol car to Larnaca General Hospital but he was pronounced dead on arrival. The funeral took place yesterday at 5pm in Larnaca and the parents asked for those attending to dress in white to represent little Eantas’ innocent soul. Instead of wreaths they asked peo-

ple to make contributions to the Anti Cancer Society where the boy was a young volunteer. The dog was put down by veterinary services and the owner, who was arrested by police for not keeping the Akita on a leash, was released yesterday without charge. The owner and the boy’s father both serve at the same army unit in the Larnaca area and had been friends from a young age. Colonel Andy Loizou, the boy’s father, called on the public to stop the arguing which began on social networking sites shortly after news of the incident broke as people rushed to point the finger at certain dogs and dog owners. He told reporters his son would not have wished people to blame the dog as he had loved animals. According to police spokesman, Andreas Angelides, the dog’s owner was released without charge until all relevant statements are taken and the case was seen by Attorney-general Petros Clerides. “Once we have finished taking statements it will be clear which laws have been broken,” he said. The dog was not on a leash at the moment he attacked the boy, according to Angelides. “From the moment that the dog was at home and wasn’t on a leash and there wasn’t someone supervising the dog then any incident is the owner’s responsibility whether they are in enclosed spaces or in open spaces,” he said. “Dog owners must take precautionary measures to prevent such incidents from happening, like keeping

Women safe after being held captive for 10 years By Kim Palmer THE three Cleveland women found alive after vanishing in their own neighbourhood for about a decade were rescued from a house that authorities tried to visit several years ago, police said yesterday. Three brothers, one of them a school bus driver who owns the Cleveland house where the three women and a child were rescued on Monday, are under arrest, police said at a news conference. A relative of one of the women, teenagers when they disappeared,

described their survival as “a miracle” as Cleveland authorities and residents grappled with how they went unnoticed for so long. Police said a six-year-old girl rescued with them is believed to be the child of Amanda Berry, now 27, whose screams for help alerted a neighbour and led to their release following her frantic 911 call on Monday evening. They were rescued after Amanda Berry was freed from the house by neighbours who heard her screaming. She made a frantic telephone call to emergency services and told them that she had been abducted. Neighbours said Berry was nervous, crying

and appeared dressed in pyjamas and old sandals. “Help me! I’m Amanda Berry. ... I’ve been kidnapped and I’ve been missing for 10 years and I’m here. I’m free now,” Berry can be heard telling a 911 operator in a recording of the call released by police. At first neighbour Anna Tejeda said she did not want to believe who the young woman was. “You’re not Amanda Berry,” she insisted. “Amanda Berry is dead.” But when Berry told her she had been kidnapped and held captive, Tejeda

Home Young children should not remain on their own with Akitas say Veterinary Services

Horror after dog attack kills boy continued from page one their dogs on a leash even in open spaces because even if their pets don’t have a history of attacking people you never know what might happen or how any animal could react,” he added. Speaking on state radio yesterday, head of veterinary services, Giorgos Kyriakides said that all dogs under certain circumstances can be dangerous. “Every dog is different and they have their own individual character,” he said. He added that Akitas are very strong dogs that are very protective of their owners and their living area but they are also quiet and disciplined animals, he said. “Young children should not remain on their own with Akitas,” he said, adding they could be jealous animals and any movement made by someone other than their owner could be construed as a threat.

RESPONSIBILITY Kyriakides warned that buying a dog was a huge responsibility that required more than the basics of feeding and walking them. These included training from a young age and socialising the dogs with other animals and with humans. “If a dog is not properly socialised then you cannot tell how it may react in a given moment,” he concluded. Laws need to be put in place to help police handle the many incidents of owners mistreating their dogs, farmers poisoning hunting dogs, strays and dog chipping according to former environment commissioner Charalambos Theopemptou. “Pet shops continue to sell all kinds of breeds which has resulted in dog shelters, which are not aided by the government, becoming over-

crowded and dog shelter owners having to put animals down as their owners cannot be found,” he said. Theopemptou added that certain breeds of dog should not even be brought to Cyprus, not because they may be aggressive but due to the climate. “If you cannot care for a dog in the correct manner by keeping it in temperatures that it is comfortable in, then you shouldn’t own that breed of dog,” Theopemptou said. In response to Theopemptou’s calls for legislation to be put in place regarding dogs, Justice Minister Ionas Nicolaou responded that every law must be regularly studied and modernised. “Our priority right now is to allow the parents of the unfortunate child and the dog owner to try to recover from this tragedy,” he said. “What I can say right now and it must be comprehended by those who wish to keep pets at home is that they must take appropriate protective measures,” he added. Nicolaou concluded that we must learn to be more consistent in our actions. The Green Party also joined the debate yesterday, calling on an end to the complete lawlessness regarding dog ownership. “The main cause of this fatal incident is the ineffectiveness of our government and the criminal indifference to finally implement an effective law for dog owners,” a party statement said. The statement went on to say that the Green Party had submitted an amendment to the dog law eight years ago that was still pending approval. Green party Generalsecretary George Perdikis will meet with the justice minister today to discuss the creation of a special police department dealing with animals.

An Akita playing in the garden of its owner’s home yesterday

(Christos Theodorides)

Girl needed 32 stitches after Akita attack last year THERE ARE two types of Akitas, of differing weights and sizes: the original Japanese Akita breed and an American Akita. The dog which mauled the unfortunate five-year-old is believed to be an American Akita. A look through various magazines and websites will tell you that the Akita is a docile, intelligent, courageous and fearless dog. It is careful and very affectionate with its family. Sometimes spontaneous, it needs firm training as a puppy, and a firm, confident, consistent pack leader. Without it, the dog can become very wilful and possibly very aggressive towards other dogs and animals. The Akita is considered a first-class guard dog in Japan, and Japanese mothers often leave the children of the family in the Akita’s care, though they should definitely be supervised with other household pets and children. They are extremely loyal and thrive on firm leadership from their handlers. Although the breed may tolerate and be good with the children of its own family, if the dog is not taught that it is below all humans in the pack order, it may not accept other children. If teased, the breed may bite, thus chil-

dren must be taught to display leadership qualities and at the same time to respect the dog. Akitas consider eye contact a challenge and can react aggressively, therefore one is advised not to get down to the Akita’s level and close to the dog’s face unless well acquainted with the dog. Such positions can - and do - trigger an aggressive response. One such incident which went unreported a year ago was that involving nine-year-old Sophia from Larnaca, who was bitten in the face and arm by an Akita belonging to her 10-yearold sister’s friend. The six-year-old male Akita had no previous history of violence but as Sophia’s 44-yearold mother told the Mail, she felt she should have seen the warning signs as the dog was not overly friendly or affectionate. “Out of nowhere and with no warning, as the three girls were playing with the dog just two metres from where we were sitting, the dog turned around and bit Sophia’s cheek and arm,” she said. The bite was far from a friendly nibble and required 32 stitches for the unfortunate nine-year-old.

“Our first reaction was that we were just happy her life was not in danger, but something clearly needs to be done to protect children from certain breeds of dangerous dogs,” she added. The dog owners were horrified by the incident and immediately took the dog to their vet to have him put down. “We were shocked by the incident and decided that we did not want to press charges, but the only way we could consider this is if the animal was put down,” Sophia’s mother said. “The vet, however, did not want to put the animal down as he had been caring for it for the last six years; it made us realise that strict laws need to be passed, which say that as soon as a dog bites a human being it needs to be put down,” she added. The 44year-old told the Mail she is an animal lover herself but felt that specific breeds need to be banned as they are quite clearly dangerous. The Akita is not a banned breed on the island. Currently in Cyprus, Pit Bull Terriers or American Pit Bulls, Japanese Tossas, Dogo Argentines and Fila Brazilieros have been banned.

President Nicos Anastasiades with Israeli President Shimon Peres in Jerusalem for a working lunch yesterday

‘The start of a new era for Cyprus and Israel’ Energy issues aside, discussions were held on health, research, technology, culture, terrorism and crime By Elias Hazou COMMON interests between Cyprus and Israel render the two nations natural allies, President Nicos Anastasiades said yesterday on the last day of his state visit to the neighbouring country. “We are inaugurating a new era in relations between our two countries,” Anastasiades said at a working lunch with Israeli President Shimon Peres in Jerusalem. “Cyprus is Israel’s most reliable neighbour,” he added. “The two countries are committed to collaborating - we have historic ties and a common culture, but also a common blessing that are the hydrocarbons.” For his part, Peres said the two countries are “linked in many ways. Without Cyprus, Israel is far away from Europe. We regard Cyprus as a close friend both politically

and geographically.” Anastasiades said Cyprus’s decision to press forward with plans to build an onshore liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant on the island, located “opposite the Suez Canal,” affords interested parties the opportunity to make use of this infrastructure to export gas to the Far East and to Europe. Nicosia proposes that the two countries pool their natural gas reserves with a view to exporting the fuel via a mooted LNG facility on the island - although it insists that Cypriot gas deposits alone render the project economically viable. Last month, energy and trade minister Giorgos Lakkotrypis told Israeli media that Cyprus wants to sign a letter of intent with Delek Group and Noble Energy for the construction of an LNG facility. He added that connecting Israel’s Tamar gas field to Cyprus was the best way to export Israeli gas to the Far East.

And in the past few months, Cyprus has been in talks with Israel to buy Israeli gas until the start of gas flow from Block 12. Asked about Israel’s thoughts on an LNG terminal in Cyprus, Anastasiades said yesterday that the two governments were still “at the stage of deliberations.” But he added that private Israeli energy companies had expressed a “manifest interest” in acquiring a stake in an LNG investment on the island. “That means that, by extension, we shall have the cooperation of companies, if not the Israeli government as well,” he said. He declined to elaborate, citing reasons of national security for both nations. Nicosia also intends to conclude agreements with Tel Aviv on energy security and a unitization deal paving the way for exploitation of crossborder natural gas and oil reserves.

Defence Minister Fotis Fotiou had visited Israel on Thursday just ahead of Anastasiades, meeting with his Israeli counterpart Moshe Ya’alon for discussions that included dealing with securing both countries’ offshore natural gas tracts. Two weeks ago, Israel and Cyprus carried out a joint Search and Rescue drill in a maritime area near Limassol.

SATISFIED Earlier, Anastasiades described his visit to Israel as the “start of a new era in bilateral relations,” saying he was “absolutely satisfied” with the talks he held on Sunday with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Anastasiades and Netanyahu had a 20-minute private meeting, followed by talks which lasted about one hour. Energy issues aside, the two sides discussed pending agreements on health, research and

Anastasiades lays a wreath on Sunday at the Yad Vashem memorial to the victims of the Holocaust development, technology, culture and fighting terrorism and organised crime. No firm agreements or commitments were announced on energy cooperation. The visit comes amid speculation of whether the possibility of improved Israeli-Turkish ties following Netanyahu’s recent apology over the Mavi Marmara incident might put a brake on Cypriot-Israeli ties. It’s understood that Nicosia wanted to sound out Tel Aviv on this. During his trip, the President received assurances from Israeli officials, such as Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein, that relations between Israel and Cyprus do not depend on any political developments. Prior to his noon meeting

with Peres yesterday, Anastasiades was received by the Patriarch of Jerusalem Theophilos III. Later in the day, the Cypriot delegation traveled to Tel Aviv, where Anastasiades addressed a business forum jointly organised by the Israel Chamber of Commerce and the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The President also gave an address to the University of Tel Aviv. Anastasiades arrived in Israel last Thursday for a twoday private visit to attend Orthodox Easter ceremonies, before beginning the official part of his visit on Sunday. The President and his delegation - which include the trade minister and the government spokesman - return to Cyprus today.

PRESIDENT Nicos Anastasiades yesterday assured the Israeli business community that Cyprus would remain a “reliable partner” to entrepreneurs and investors interested in international expansion and that it would retain its position as a significant international investment hub for Israeli and Cypriot business. Addressing a business forum in Tel Aviv - jointly organised by the Federation of Israeli Chambers of Commerce and the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce - Anastasiades urged the Israeli business world to keep faith with Cyprus despite the financial crisis. The President promised that ongoing negotiations for a double taxation treaty between Cyprus and Israel would soon be concluded, “with the aim of significantly boosting our economic, commerce and

investment opportunities, for the mutual benefit of the business communities and peoples of the two countries. “My government will offer all help deemed necessary towards this end and will facilitate every business and investment activity originating from Israel,” he said. Anastasiades reviewed a series of steps geared at encouraging foreign investments and creating a more effective and business-friendly environment. These measures include: an additional tax deduction from taxable corporate income of up to 25 per cent for each additional worker who will be employed in the next year; slashing the time needed to issue a planning permission for large-scale development projects to three months at the most; broadening the range of permitted land development in off limit areas for

large projects; increasing building ratios for large-scale commercial developments or for large-scale properties in tourist zones; licensing of casino operation; and relaxations for long-term residency applicants who are non-EU nationals. Anastasiades said Cyprus is committed to concluding a framework agreement for the joint development of any joint gas reservoirs and of multilateral memoranda of understanding in the energy and water sectors. Capital restrictions in Cyprus are liable to affect the operations of Israeli companies in Cyprus, including Mekorot National Water Company and IDE Technologies Ltd. (a joint venture of Delek and Israel Chemicals Ltd.) which are building a desalination plant. Bilateral trade stood at €715 million in 2012.

Home Co-ops hoping to raise €1 billion with special share issue By George Psyllides COOPERATIVE banks are looking to issue special shares in a bid to raise some one billion euros that may be needed to recapitalise in the coming years, it emerged yesterday. “The aim is to raise a billion euros so that we will not need support from the mechanism (international bailout) and cover the needs through our own funds,” said Andreas Mouskallis, chairman of the cooperative federation. Should they fail, cooperatives can be recapitalised with funds earmarked for that purpose included in the island’s bailout. The special shares will be sold to members, customers and the wider public, Mouskalis said.

Cooperatives may need an estimated one billion euros through to 2015. The island’s €10 billion bailout includes up to €2.5 billion that could be used to recapitalise coops and Cyprus’ third biggest bank, Hellenic. As part of its bailout, Cyprus had to wind down Laiki, the second-biggest, while depositors in the largest lender, Bank of Cyprus, will be recapitalised by imposing losses on depositors, a process known as bail-in. Uninsured deposits – over €100,000 – have undergone a so-called haircut of 37.5 per cent, which however could ultimately reach 60 per cent. Under the bailout deal signed with international lenders, cooperatives will be given until July 31, 2013 to cover their capital shortfalls whereas other commercial banks will be allowed until the end of September 2013.

Any institution that fails to raise the required capital within the set timeframe, thus requiring state assistance, will have to prepare a restructuring plan within two months from the applicable deadline for raising capital from private sources. Cooperatives were already scrambling to restructure as part of the agreement that provided that cooperatives must shrink in number – from 96 to 35 – mainly through mergers. Mouskallis said mergers should be finished by July. Staff will be offered a voluntary retirement scheme in a bid to shed excess personnel, he added. As part of the agreement, supervision of cooperatives will be shifted to the central co-operative bank from the trade and industry ministry. The Central Bank of Cyprus will also have a role in the supervision.

Deal reached with Russia on loan

‘Cyprus is to blame for what happened’ Eurogroup’s Dijsselbloem faces MEPs on bailout deal By Poly Pantelides THE HEAD of the Eurogroup, the eurozone’s finance ministers who negotiated Cyprus’ bailout deal, was yesterday grilled by members of the European parliament (MEPs) over Cyprus’ bailout. Dutch finance minister Jeroen Dijssebloem was asked by MEPs in the committee on economic and monetary affairs to explain the exact circumstances of what was referred to as a “debacle” and a fiasco” of a bailout, and was even scolded by French MEP Sylvie Goulard, who called him “the most optimistic undertaker (she has) ever known”. Dijssebloem said Cyprus’ overgrown financial problem caused the indebted island’s problems, defending the controversial bailout agreement as “the best possible way” to handle the situation. “In the choice of instruments, we definitely looked also at the non-residents’ large deposits…As a matter of fact, the Eurogroup

felt it very important that it should be a fair burden sharing,” Dijssebloem said referring to a March 16 Eurogroup decision to impose a levy on all depositors in local banks, including the insured deposits of smaller than €100,000. The haircut was to go towards the recapitalisation needs of banks that incurred heavy losses due to their exposure to Greek debt. Cyprus’ partners were to contribute €10 billion to a bailout as long as depositors also contributed. Although rejected by parliament, the decision to raid small depositors’ savings spooked the markets over fears of breaking a taboo. Dijssebloem said yesterday that the Eurogroup should have made the distinction clearer “between a one-off wealth tax, a contribution” and that of the deposit guarantee scheme of deposits up to €100,000 “that is fully guaranteed throughout the European Union”. Eventually, “the burden was put on the uninsured depositors of the banks where the main risk was concentrated,” Dijssebloem said referring to the decision

Eurogroup head Jeroen Dijsselbloem faces MEPs yesterday to wind down the country’s second biggest bank and force losses on the depositors of the other. “Is that a fairway to deal with the crisis in the banks of Cyprus? I think so,” he said. Dijssebloem referred to the “truly exceptional circumstances” that led to Cyprus’ need for a bailout. “In the run up to this crisis, the Cyprus financial sector has been allowed to grow in an unsustainable fashion to a disproportional size compared to the Cyprus GDP,” he said. It was a point he would return to about addressing the

systemic problems caused by banking sectors and taking measures to encourage job growth being a priority. But in the middle of talking about “prioritising new economic opportunities,” Dijssebloem stopped, glancing up at an unconvinced Sylvie Goulard. “Fine, I’ll stop as I see you’re not happy with my comments,” he said. “I just wanted to make a comment,” Goulard said. “You are the most optimistic undertaker I’ve ever encountered,” she said. Dijssebloem let out a spontaneous “wow” before

(R)

adding that everyone had a “joint responsibility”. “If we start talking about undertaking we will not reach our people,” he said. But though the MEPs asked Dijssebloem to explain how and who decided to tax all savers in midMarch, he did not. “I’m very sorry that you find it unacceptable, but I won’t do that,” he said. The committee is due to hear today from the European Commission’s commissioner on economic and monetary affairs Olli Rehn and the European Central Bank’s Jorg Asmussen.

RUSSIA has agreed to extended the maturity and reduce the interest on its loan to Cyprus, a document prepared by international lenders showed, providing additional but expected financial relief to the island on top of an EU-IMF bailout. Cyprus had complied with all conditions set by international lenders for the first €3 billion of the €10 billion bailout to flow to Nicosia later in May, said the April 30 document, drawn up by the troika of the European Central Bank, the European Commission and the IMF. Russia lent Cyprus €2.5 billion in 2011 for five years, with an annual interest rate of 4.5 per cent. Extending the loan and reducing the interest will ease debt servicing costs for Nicosia and help it regain financial stability. “Reassurance has also been obtained from the Cypriot authorities that formal agreement has been reached between the Republic of Cyprus and the Russian Federation on an extension by two years of the maturity for the Russian loan, which will be reimbursed as of 2018, and a reduction of the interest rate from 4.5 percent to 2.5 percent,” the document said. Cyprus secured a threeyear bailout from the eurozone’s ESM bailout fund and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) last month, becoming the fifth country in the single currency area to seek eurozone financial help as a result of the sovereign debt crisis. “All prior actions are now compliant both on substance and on procedure,” the document said.

An emotional Hans-Jorg Wiedl who is better known as Snake George vowed to continue to fight to establish a new location after he was forced to close the doors of his Paphos reptile park a couple of years ago. The Paphos-based expert told the Cyprus Mail that well-known geologist and botanist, Christos Charlalambous, had offered a piece of land in a rural area of Paphos to house the new park. “I have had a very kind offer from Christos for a fantastic piece of land in Inia and now I will do my best to ensure I open a snake and reptile park,’ said Wiedl, 65. “Now is not the best time economically to secure funding but I will hopefully find a way to get the backing of project funding from the European Union. In a couple of weeks I will know more,” he said. Snake George is known for rediscovering the Cyprus grass snake, which was believed to have been extinct for the last 40 years. He also

CYPRUS TODAY Critical after fall from balcony A 24-YEAR-OLD Latvian woman is in Larnaca General Hospital in a critical condition after she fell from her third floor flat in Larnaca around 2am yesterday. According to a police spokesman the woman, who was allegedly drunk at the time, fell from the balcony of her third-floor flat, plummeting around 12 metres to the ground. From the fall, she fractured her jaw, ribs, and thigh bone and injured her liver and dislocated her shoulder. “At around 2am, a 24-year-old woman along with three others in her flat on the third floor of an apartment block in Larnaca, drinking alcoholic beverages, appears to have lost her balance and fallen from her 12-metre high balcony,” Larnaca Police spokesman Christos Andreou said. He added that she was taken to Larnaca General Hospital where she is in a critical condition. “Officers established, after searching the flat, that the 24-year-old lost her balance due to being drunk, and fell from the third floor,” Andreou said. “At around 11am the woman regained consciousness and confirmed our initial findings,” he added.

CY investigates ruptured tyre CYPRUS Airways (CY) is investigating the circumstances under which one of their aircraft’s tyres ruptured when the plane landed at Larnaca airport on Sunday, a CY spokesman has said. Kyriacos Kyriacou said that on Easter Sunday, a tyre ruptured on the left (back) wheel of a CY Airbus 320 aircraft flying in from Beirut to Larnaca while the plane was on Larnaca airport’s runway. None of the 47 passengers and six-member crew on board were hurt Kyriacou said, adding that safety procedures kicked in and the aircraft parked safely. “I want to make it clear that flight safety was not threatened, while passengers, briefed by the aircraft’s captain on what had happened, did not panic,” Kyriacou said. Kyriacou said that Cyprus Airways were investigating the circumstances of the accident but could not be reached yesterday to comment.

Snake George educates children about reptiles at his previous park proved that the blunt nose viper lays eggs, and doesn’t give birth to live young as had previously been thought. Snake George is also well known and respected for his attempts to protect the Cypriot environment and was nominated for the 2008 Paphos Heart of Gold award for his efforts. The reptile expert left Cyprus for a time following the closure of his park-He moved to his home country of Aus-

tria to complete a number of snake and reptile surveys for the Austrian government. He is now living back in Cyprus. Charalambous said of the snake lover: “I have known him for many years and I wanted to help. All of the relevant administration must be completed and an application made, but it’s a good idea.” Snake George said that closing the initial snake park had been a very hard thing for him to do. He set up the reptile park in Ayios Georgios in Paphos in 1996. He had previously been in Cyprus as a member of UNFICYP in the 1970s. Various other locations have previously been suggested as a new site for the park, including Peyia and Yeroskipou but Snake George says people generally fear snakes and this was why no new location has yet

been established. Land in Tala in Paphos had been suggested as a possible location but the then village leader turned up with a petition of 1,500 signatures of people who didn’t want the park there. There were around 150 snakes at the park, which Snake George had to release back into the wild. He would like to continue with his breeding programme, and is concerned for the future of the Cyprus grass snake. “I would like to make people aware that even though I don’t have a park at the moment I am still here to help remove unwanted snakes to a safe area. People can call me and I will come and help. I would much rather do this than see them being killed, which is so often the case,” he said. Call Snake George on 99987685

Woman killed in road accident A 27-YEAR-OLD Bulgarian woman was killed yesterday at 7.10am in Nicosia when she lost control of the car she was driving, also injuring a 39-year-old male passenger, police said. According to reports, Petia Simeonova Kotova was driving her car down Ammochostos Avenue in Aglandjia when she lost control of the vehicle and struck an Electricity Authority of Cyprus pole. Both Kotova and her 39-yearold passenger were taken to Nicosia General Hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival by doctors. The 39-year-old passenger, also a Bulgarian national, was treated and released with only minor injuries. Police are investigating the cause of the accident.

Flower festival downgraded LARNACA Municipality’s measures to aid the public during the crisis have meant the annual flower festival will not include a parade of floats down the Phinikoudes promenade. “This year we are promoting volunteering and want to give value to the money spent,” Larnaca Mayor Andreas Louroudjiatis said. “The municipality’s aim is to give meaning to the whole event despite the festival’s small cost,” he added. The Mayor explained that on the weekend of May 18 and 19 that instead of a parade of floats, Ermou and Zenon Kiteos Streets would be pedestrianised. On those streets, outdoor flower markets will operate thanks to an initiative from the local florists’ association.

Success for Cypriot nanotechnology company A CYPRIOT research and development company in Limassol, SignalGeneriX, has recently signed a contract with the European Commission to complete the design and fabrication of the electronics for the nanotechnology project ‘NATURAL’ which is being funded with €3.2 million by the European Union. The project aims to give solutions to blade related problems in aircraft engines, ship propellers and wind generators. It will concentrate on very small elements on the blades which are not visible to the eye. The purpose of the project is to create an inspection tool to examine the fibres on the surface of the blades. They can then be assessed to ensure they work to optimal performance. “These checks can ensure that the blades have as little friction with

the air and as a consequence significantly improve performance,” Tasos Kounoudes, Chief Executive Officer of SignalGeneriX said. “This success for a Cypriot company is very important at this specific time since it is evident that growth can be achieved through investment in innovation,” he added. The project will last for three years and SignalGeneriX will receive the intellectual property rights. SignalGeneriX was established in 2004 in Limassol and consists of ten Cypriot researchers and engineers. It collaborates with leading hightech companies worldwide. Home Academics ‘Church is ready to create thousands of positions’ urge more land use for crops By Poly Pantelides

By Maria Gregoriou ACADEMICS from the Cyprus University of Technology (TEPAK) sent a letter to the agricultural and environment ministry suggesting that property belonging to the government and the church be used to plant fruit and vegetables for community markets and to create jobs for the unemployed. Demetris Tsaltas, Agricultural Microbiology and Biotechnology, Ioannis Papastylianou, Special Scientist in production systems and Fotis Papadimas, lecturer in dairy science sent the letter early last week and are awaiting a reply. “This would give the unemployed or graduates something to do and it will show children how food grows so they learn that fruit and vegetables are not just things that are ready for us to eat. Also, we or government agricultural officials can offer advice on what should be planted and when. People will not be told what to do but will rather be offered guidance,” Tsaltas said. “We have tried to see what we could do right now to help the economy and the people. Some may not have much to eat very soon and some are already there,” Tsaltas added. Food essentials at community markets are long lasting food products such as, canned and dry food. Fresh products should also be added to the list of essentials, therefore offering a balanced diet, he said. “These products should only be given to the needy and not sold on the open market. We do not want to disrupt farmers’ income or take any work away from them. We made a suggestion but the government will put an organised plan in place if they choose to act on our letter. They could concentrate on how local products can be better used and how recycled water can be used to water plants,” Tsaltas continued. TEPAK has about 30 graduates every year in the field of agriculture. These graduates are finding it hard to become employed so such a programme would also help them as well as the needy.

AFTER promises of mortgaging Church property and donating churches’ valuables to kick-start the economy, Archbishop Chrysostomos II has now pledged to employ thousands of people through “millions’ worth of development projects. Speaking on Monday during a visit to the General Hospital of Paphos, the Primate said the Archbishopric was going to invest between €60 million and €70 million to build a hotel in Paphos, on land belonging to the Archbishopric. He also said that he would invest in over €100 million to build a 75MW photovoltaic park just outside Nicosia, and said he was also planning to build a private 75MW power plant in

collaboration with Russian and Israeli partners that would cost “several million”. And while many private schools face financial difficulties because of the crisis, the Archbishop has said the Church will set up an English-language school in Nicosia’s Makedonitissa district. He said there would be other projects involving foreign investment and collaborations with Cypriots, but did not specify. With a bit of hard work “we will bounce back,” the Archbishop said adding that the Church was there for Cypriots. Just last week, Chrysostomos said in his Easter message that the Church was willing to donate all of its valuables, even the Churches’ sacred vessels “for the salvation of the economy”. And in March, before a Cyprus bailout was finalised, the Archbishop said

the Church could mortgage its property to invest in bonds to support the economy. Further back, when he was Bishop of Paphos, he promised displaced Greek Cypriots compensation if they were to vote against the 2004 Annan Plan, a proposed solution to the Cyprus problem that was to be rejected by Greek Cypriots. But the Primate later denied issuing such promises. On Monday, the Archbishop said that Cypriots had “guts and courage and although they (knew) how to overspend, they also (knew) how to get by with less”. Chrysostomos said he was sure the government would do its best to promote growth and bring back smiles on people’s faces. “Despite difficulties, there will be better days ahead,” the Archbishop said.

State pledges €30m to create 8,000 new jobs Some 45,000 registered as unemployed in April, of which 33,500 were Cypriots By George Psyllides

Labour Minister Zeta Emilianidou said the schemes would apply in the wider tourism sector (Christos Theodorides)

THE government yesterday rolled out three schemes worth over €30 million to boost employment as Cyprus experiences its worst jobless rates in three decades. Labour Minister Zeta Emilianidou said the schemes aimed at providing work for 8,000 people, the majority in the wider tourism sector. “Statistics show a large number of unemployed Cypriots,” the minister said. “With everyone’s cooperation our fellow citizens will be able to find jobs.” Around 45,000 people were registered as unemployed in April, with 33,500 being Cypriots. The schemes had been announced by President Nicos Anastasiades last month. They were worth €30.8 million, co-funded by the European Union. The first one – worth €6.8 million -- provides for the employment of 1,000 people looking for flexible hours. The scheme subsidises 65 per cent of the wages for eight months, provided that

the duration of the employment is ten months. It will also subsidise the workers’ cost of travelling to their place of employment. Eligible businesses were those that had not reduced their workforce after the announcement of the schemes on April 19 and will create one or more jobs under a flexible regime. The bulk of the budget, €20 million, has been earmarked for the hotel and food industries – the tourism industry in general – in a bid to find jobs for 6,000 currently unemployed people. The scheme will subsidise 40 per cent of workers’ salaries for eight months, provided they are employed for 12 months or 30 per cent for five months if they were given a job for seven months. It applies to businesses that would not have laid off any staff between April 19 and the date they submit their application to participate in the plan. Exemptions are made if the positions had been left vacant following voluntary or age-related retirement, or legal dismissal due to disciplinary offence.

Employers must also pledge they will not cut staff engaged in the same area as the subsidised person for the duration of the scheme. The government also unveiled a €4.0 million scheme targeting 1,000 unemployed university degree holders under 35 years old. It will run for six months and its aim is to keep youths in Cyprus by allowing them to gain some experience in their field while on a salary of €500 per month. Priority will be given to holders of masters or doctorates degrees, those married with children, single parents and the long-term unemployed. Currently going through the worse economic crisis in decades, Cyprus is bracing for a jump in unemployment in the coming months. The European Commission said last week it expected Cyprus’ unemployment to reach 15.5 per cent this year and 16.9 per cent in 2014. Real jobs are created by businesses not the state subsidising wages Page 13

Jimmy Tarbuck in child sex arrest

Tarbuck was awarded an OBE by the Queen in 1994 and has spent over 50 years in the television industry

VETERAN comedian Jimmy Tarbuck today spent the morning behind closed doors, refusing to comment following his arrest over an alleged sexual assault on a young boy in the 1970s. The 73-year-old TV star, who lives in an exclusive gated development in Kingston Upon Thames, was questioned by officers on April 26, but the arrest had remained secret because North Yorkshire Police chose not to release the information. It came after the force received information from the Metropolitan Police working on Operation Yewtree, the inquiry investigating abuse allegations against Jimmy Savile and others. Tarbuck, who lives with his wife Pauline, yesterday said he had “no comment” to make. A police spokesman said: “North Yorkshire Police can confirm that a 73year-old man has been arrested in con-

nection with a historic child sex abuse investigation in Harrogate. “The man was arrested in Kingston Upon Thames on Friday, April 26, 2013. “Following questioning, he was released on police bail pending further inquiries. “The complaint relates to an incident that occurred in the late 1970s when the victim was a young boy. “It would not be appropriate to comment further at this stage.” Tarbuck, who was awarded an OBE by the Queen in 1994, has spent more than 50 years in the television industry. The father-of-three is the latest in a long string of veteran celebrities to be arrested on suspicion of sex offences allegedly committed over the past few decades, including convicted paedophile Gary Glitter, comics Freddie Starr and Jim Davidson, presenter

Rolf Harris and DJ Dave Lee Travis. All deny any wrongdoing and investigations are continuing. Last week former BBC star Stuart Hall pleaded guilty to indecently assaulting 13 girls, the youngest aged nine, between the 1960s and the 1980s. Police said that the news of his arrest meant more victims came forward. Tarbuck was born in 1940 in Liverpool. He was a schoolmate of John Lennon and his first television breakthrough came with It’s Tarbuck 65! in 1964. He hosted numerous quiz shows, including Winner Takes All and Full Swing. Last November he performed in The Royal Variety Performance at the Royal Albert Hall in London. His daughter is the actress, television and radio presenter Liza Tarbuck. Tarbuck’s agent could not be reached for comment on Monday night.

Death penalty appeal bid launched

UK should leave EU, argues former Chancellor Lawson

A BRITISH grandmother facing the death penalty for drug smuggling in Bali has lodged an appeal at Indonesia’s Supreme Court, human rights campaigners said. Lindsay Sandiford was sentenced to death by firing squad by a court in Indonesia for bringing £1.6 million of cocaine into the country. The 56-year-old lost her first appeal against the ruling at the Bali High Court last month, but has now launched a second bid to overturn the death penalty at the higher court, pressure group Reprieve said. Balinese police claim Sandiford, from Cheltenham in Gloucestershire, was at the centre of a drugs-importing ring involving three other Britons. She denies the allegations, claiming she was forced to transport the drugs to protect her children, whose safety was at stake. Sandiford’s latest move comes after she lost her appeal over a UK Government refusal to fund her legal challenge. But she has accrued more than £10,000 from public donations through a fundraising webpage. Sandiford, originally from Redcar, Teesside, was arrested at Bali’s airport last May after 4.8kg (10.6lb) of cocaine was found in the lining of her suitcase during a routine customs check. She was later accused of damaging the image of Bali and received the death sentence following her trial. The penalty was imposed despite prosecutors asking only for a 15-year jail term. The British Government said it was disappointed when she lost her bid to block the sentence. Sandiford could seek a judicial review if the Supreme Court rejects her appeal, though this would largely depend on whether new evidence had come to light, human rights campaigners said. After that, her final resort would be to seek a reprieve granted by the country’s president.

‘PM unlikely to win back powers from Europe’ By Peter Griffiths BRITAIN should leave the European Union because Prime Minister David Cameron’s plan to claw back powers from Brussels is doomed, former Chancellor of the Exchequer Nigel Lawson said on Monday. Lawson’s intervention piles pressure on Cameron just days after his Conservative Party was shaken in local elections by the surging antiEU UK Independence Party (UKIP). Cameron came to power in a coalition government in 2010 with a plea to his party to “stop banging on about Europe”, an issue that has divided the Conservatives for decades and helped bring down two of his predecessors, Margaret Thatcher and John Major. But his promise in January to renegotiate the terms of Britain’s EU membership and to hold an “in-out” referendum if he is re-elected in 2015 has failed to stop the party squabbling over Europe or halt UKIP’s rise. Lawson, who served as

Intervention piles on pressure: Lord Nigel Lawson has become the most senior Tory figure to call for Britain to quit the European Union Thatcher’s Chancellor from 1983 to 1989, is the most senior member of Cameron’s Conservative Party to call for Britain to withdraw from the EU. Cameron’s attempts to repatriate powers from Brussels would probably only secure “inconsequential” re-

sults, Lawson said, echoing warnings from France and Germany. Britain would be better off outside a 27-nation bloc that has become a “bureaucratic monstrosity”, he wrote in Monday’s Times newspaper. “I strongly suspect that there would be a positive eco-

nomic advantage to the UK in leaving the single market,” Lawson wrote in an article that stirred memories of a Conservative civil war over Europe that raged for large parts of the 1980s and 1990s. “In my judgment, the economic gains would substantially outweigh the costs.”

Lawson, who voted to stay inside the EU’s forerunner in Britain’s last referendum on Europe in 1975, said the eurozone debt crisis had fundamentally changed the EU and he would choose to leave if another vote is held. Some Conservatives have called on Cameron to bring forward legislation enshrining his referendum pledge in law from the next parliament to this one. Both sides on the debate over Britain’s EU future have been setting out their stalls since Cameron’s referendum pledge in January. More than 500 business leaders backed Cameron’s renegotiation policy in April, saying a new, looser relationship with Europe would boost the British economy. Others fear the referendum pledge has created years of dangerous uncertainty that will deter foreign investment in Britain and upset allies in the EU, Britain’s biggest trading partner. Cameron, trailing in the polls by around 10 points, supports Britain’s continued membership of a club it joined at the third attempt in 1973. Responding to Lawson’s article, Cameron’s spokesman said the prime minister wants the EU to change and “wake up to the modern world of competition”. “Europe has to reform,” his office said in a statement. “But our continued membership must have the consent of the British people, which is why the PM has set out a clear timetable on this issue.”

UK pub closures have increased to 26 per week, say campaigners

Activists were nonetheless optimistic for pubs’ fortunes

PUB closures have increased to 26 a week, although campaigners hope the industry’s fortunes are set to improve; The Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) said the number of pubs shutting for good has increased from 18 a week in the past few months. Camra said the figures showed how important it was that Chancellor George Osborne scrapped the beer duty escalator - which increased beer prices 2 per cent above inflation - in his last Budget. Chief executive Mike Benner said:

“We believe that the scrapping of the beer duty escalator and the extra 1p off beer duty announced in this year’s Budget could mark a turning point for pubs.” Camra has launched a campaign to have hundreds of pubs listed as “assets of community value” in a bid to stop locals being sold for short term financial gain by owners. Benner added: “We are hopeful that the fortunes of Britain’s pubs are set to change.” A Department for Communities and

Local Government spokesman said: “Local pubs are part of the social and cultural fabric of this nation and we are determined to protect them. “That’s why we are cutting taxes for small community pubs by doubling small business rate relief for three and a half years and reducing corporation tax to 20 per cent, helping small- and medium-size pubs. “On top of this the Community Right to Bid is already giving communities the power to step in and save their treasured locals from closure.”

Charles handed significant duty

Queen to miss Commonwealth leaders’ meeting

BY stepping in for the Queen at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Sri Lanka, the Prince of Wales will be performing one of his most significant duties to date as a future King. He has never before attended in place of the monarch at the bi-annual gathering of Commonwealth leaders. In 2007, both the Prince and the Queen attended CHOGM in Uganda. It was the first time Charles had been to an overseas CHOGM and was seen as an important event for the heir to the throne. Charles did not attend the 2007 opening ceremony, which was performed by the Queen, but instead supported her visit. Although the Queen is head of the Commonwealth, until recently it was thought Charles would not automatically take on the role when he becomes King. But in the last few months comments by the Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard offered substantial support for Charles taking over the symbolic post. “For Australia’s part, I am sure the Queen’s successor as monarch will one day serve as head of the Commonwealth with the same distinction as her Majesty has done,” Gillard said. Her remarks came soon after the Queen fell ill and missed a series of engagements with symptoms of gastroenteritis. The decision to send the Prince to Sri Lanka instead of the Queen also signifies a son’s commitment to easing the burdern on his parents in their advancing years.

Monarch’s first absence from meet since 1973 as she cuts back on long-haul travel By Martha Linden and Tony Jones THE Queen will miss the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting for the first time since 1973, Buckingham Palace has confirmed. The Prince of Wales will represent the Queen, who is head of the Commonwealth, at the meeting in Sri Lanka in November. A spokesman said: “I can confirm that the Queen will be represented by the Prince of Wales. “The reason is that we are reviewing the amount of long-haul travel that is taken by the Queen. “As a result of that she won’t be travelling to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) later this year.” The Queen, who is 87, was first present at CHOGM in Ottawa, Canada, in 1973 - missing the first one in 1971 - and has been at every summit since. Campaigners including Amnesty International are calling for the CHOGM meeting not to take place in Colombo before an investigation is carried out into human rights abuses committed in the final six months of the 26-year Sri Lankan civil war. Britain is facing pressure to lead a boycott of the meeting, with Canada’s government indicating that it will not attend un-

less specific criteria are met. Buckingham Palace said the Queen’s decision not to attend was not related to the political situation. The spokesman said: “It is nothing to do with the political situation in Sri Lanka. The key point here is that the Queen will be represented, although she is not there in person, by the Prince of Wales.” The Queen was forced to cancel her appearance in March at the Commonwealth Day service in Westminster Abbey as she continued her recovery from a bout of gastroenteritis.

‘FAMILY’ The cancellation came after she had spent 24 hours in hospital being treated for the illness which gives sufferers vomiting and diarrhoea. The Commonwealth Day service in March was the first the Queen had missed in 20 years, the last occasion being when she had flu in 1993. The Duke of Edinburgh was the only senior royal representative at the service but the Queen attended the Commonwealth Reception at Marlborough House on the evening of March 11 to sign the new Commonwealth Charter. The Queen sees the Commonwealth as a “family” and takes pride in its work as “a force for good in the

PM pledges anti-piracy aid at summit BRITAIN will help boost radio communications on the Somali coast as part of efforts to combat rampant piracy along global shipping routes near the East African country, Prime Minister David Cameron said yesterday. Britain will also spend millions of dollars on bolstering Somalia’s security forces, Cameron said at a major London conference on Somalia, aimed at bolstering stability in the country after two decades of lawlessness and civil war. “I am pleased that Britain will commit 10 million pounds ($15.5 million) to help develop Somalia’s armed forces and 14.5 million pounds to double the number of police officers and train judges and lawyers,” Cameron said. “Britain will also support the new maritime strategy enabling full radio connection all along the entire coastline for the first time in 20 years,” he added. Although piracy is down by 80 per cent this year with no

British funds will also bolster Somalia’s security forces, said Cameron vessel attacked so far, Cameron said, the World Bank estimated in an April report that piracy emanating from the Horn of Africa nation may still cost the world economy $18 billion a year. Speaking to the conference, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud called for international support, and tied security in Somalia to that of the region and the “re-

moval of the piracy stranglehold” on the Gulf of Aden. “It will be a Somali-owned solution that will fix Somalia, but no country has ever recovered from such social and economic collapse without the help of the world,” he said. “And so in partnership with our endeavours, we respectfully ask for your total and unflinching commitment, partnership and support.” The conference took place during what organisers call a “pivotal” moment for Somalia, after new parliamentarians were appointed last year who went on to elect Mohamud. The vote was the first of its kind since the toppling of military dictator Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991, which left Somalia at the mercy of warlords and later radical Islamists, while its coasts became notorious pirate havens. A draft of the final communique seen by Reuters calls on the international community to “consolidate progress quickly”.

Although she is its symbolic head, she has no formal powers over the 54 countries and two billion citizens which make up the voluntary association. Every two years, Commonwealth leaders meet to discuss global and Commonwealth issues and to agree on collective policies and initiatives. The last CHOGM was in Perth, Western Australia, in October 2011. The 2013 CHOGM is scheduled to take place in Colombo from November 15 to 17.

World WORLD TODAY China denial CHINA has denied fresh U.S. claims it is sponsoring cyber-attacks and said the countries should cooperate against the global threat of computer crime. The accusations in the latest Pentagon report on the Chinese military are “irresponsible and harmful to the mutual trust between the sides, Senior Col. Volcano deaths ONE of the Philippines’ most active volcanoes spewed huge rocks and ash, killing at least five climbers and trapping more than a dozen others near the crater in its first eruption in three years. Rescue teams and helicopters were sent to Mayon volcano in the central Philippines to bring out the dead. At least seven were injured from a group of about 20 mountaineers who were caught by surprise by the sudden eruption, Albay provincial governor Joey Salceda said. The dead included a German, an Austrian and a Filipino.

Hollande eyes reshuffle, additional laws by decree Ministers to be judged on results, says French leader By Catherine Bremer FRENCH President Francois Hollande has promised to weed out underperforming ministers as he strives to win back support from a public impatient over stillunfulfilled promises to restore jobs and growth. The Socialist Hollande, whose poll ratings are among the worst for a post-World War Two French leader, told weekly magazine Paris Match his ministers would be judged on their results just as he has asked voters to do with him. Hollande and his government have pleaded for time for reforms to bear fruit after his one-year anniversary in power was marked on Sunday by mass street protests. But he said he was prepared to legislate more by decree to get future measures into law faster, and would change his team to ensure economic reforms were implemented. “At some point, choices and adjustments will have to be

Supporters of French President Hollande say a recent labour law overhaul, aimed at making hiring and firing more flexible, and measures taken in November to ease labour costs amount to bigger reforms than any of his conservative predecessors attempted made,” he told the magazine in comments published yesterday. “The reshuffle will happen when the time is right. What the French people want today are results. This team must produce results on employment, housing, consumption, education and

France’s place in the world. Everyone will be judged on their results - me above all,” he said. A year into his term, Hollande’s ratings have slumped faster than any other president’s to as low as 25 per cent. With the economy slipping into recession, he faces

an uphill battle to meet a promise to halt by year-end a long climb in unemployment to 10.6 per cent. Many voters who initially saw his consensus-seeking style as a welcome change from his all-controlling predecessor Nicolas Sarkozy now view him as lacking author-

ity over a team where leftwingers such as anti-globalisation Industry Minister Arnaud Montebourg clash openly with more centrist ministers. French media have speculated that Montebourg could be at risk in a possible reshuffle that has been the talk of Paris political circles since former budget minister Jerome Cahuzac quit in March over a secret Swiss bank account. Asked directly if Montebourg’s popularity with leftwing voters protected him from being ejected from the government, Hollande replied: “No one is protected in the government. No one has immunity.” Supporters of Hollande say a recent labour law overhaul, aimed at making hiring and firing more flexible, and measures taken in November to ease labour costs amount to bigger reforms than any of his conservative predecessors attempted. Hollande said that to avoid the legislative tangles that can hold up new laws even despite his Socialist Party’s majority in parliament, the government would start legislating more by decree, as it is doing in a push to get more housing built. “A big lesson from my first year is that the legislative process is too slow for the needs of the French people and the demands of companies,” he said. “We must act more quickly.”

Germany sees immigration surge AN influx of people from crisis-hit southern European countries like Spain, Italy and Greece has led to the biggest surge in German immigration in nearly 20 years. The Federal Statistics Office said yesterday that 1.081 million immigrants flocked to Germany last year, up 13 per cent from 2011 and the highest number since 1995. Leading the way were arrivals from eastern countries that joined the EU in 2004 or 2007, and those from southern eurozone members struggling with recession and high unemployment as a result of the currency bloc’s three-year old debt crisis. The number of immigrants coming from Spain, Greece, Portugal and Italy, for example, surged by between 40 and 45 per cent compared to the priovious year, although the total inflow from these countries remains well below that from Poland and Romania. “The rise in immigration from EU countries hit by the financial and debt crisis is particularly strong,” the Statistics Office said. Germany has been a rare pillar of strength during the crisis, benefiting from deep structural reforms introduced a decade ago,

A GAS tanker truck exploded on a highway north of Mexico City early yesterday, killing at least 19 people and injuring 36 others as a fireball tore through cars and homes. Pablo Bedolla, mayor of the Mexico City suburb of Ecatepec, said 19 people died in the blast that engulfed early morning traffic. Television footage showed burned-out vehicles and debris strewn all over the highway on the edge of the capital.

competitive small- and medium-sized companies and record low interest rates resulting from its safe-haven status. Unemployment, at 6.9 per cent, is hovering just above a post-reunification low. By contrast, more than one in four workers in Spain and Greece are without a job, and youth unemployment in these countries is close to 60 per cent. This has made Germany, Europe’s largest economy, an increasingly attractive destination, despite barriers like the language. Still, Reiner Klingholz of the Berlin Institute for Population and Development, said rising immigration from within Europe was not a long-term solution to Germany’s own demographic problems. Germany has one of the lowest birth rates in Europe and an ageing population that is expected to begin weighing heavily on its social security and healthcare systems from the end of the decade. The data showed that 42,167 Italians, 34,109 Greeks and 29,910 Spaniards moved to Germany in 2012. That compared to 176,367 from Poland and 116,154 from Romania, the countries with the largest immigration flow.

Charges against Spanish princess are suspended

Spain’s Princess Cristina

A SPANISH court yesterday suspended charges against Princess Cristina, saying there was not sufficient evidence that King Juan Carlos’ daughter had been an accomplice in an embezzlement case involving her husband. Cristina, 47, was charged last month in the case, the first time a member of the royal family had been the subject of criminal proceedings since the Spanish monarchy was reinstated in the 1970s. Yesterday’s ruling by the High Court of the Balearic island of Mallorca over-

turned an earlier judgement by Examining Magistrate Jose Castro, of a lower court. The charges could be reinstated if further evidence is unearthed, the High Court said. The case, along with a number of other high-level corruption scandals has deepened public discontent with the royal family and with alleged graft among the rich and powerful while many Spaniards struggle with 27 per cent unemployment and a long-running recession. Castro had said there was evidence

the princess had aided and abetted or at least been an accomplice of her husband, Inaki Urdangarin. He has been charged with fraud, tax evasion, falsifying documents and embezzlement of 6 million euros ($8 million) in public funds when he headed a charitable foundation. The High Court was ruling on an appeal of the charges that had been brought by prosecutors. In Spain’s legal system, examining magistrates and prosecutors both investigate cases, and may have differing views.

Kerry seeks Putin aid for Syria peace

Amanda Berry (centre) reunited with her sister in Cleveland, Ohio in hospital with the girl rescued with her

(AFP)

Women are safe after 10 years in captivity Authorities visited house in 2004 where Ohio trio found continued from page one said she gave her the phone to call police, who arrived within minutes and then took the other women from the house. Police arrived to find Berry along with Gina DeJesus, now 23, who vanished in 2004, and Michelle Knight, now 32, who went missing in 2002, police said. They also discovered the child, who would have been conceived and born during Berry’s captivity, police said. Police Chief Michael McGrath said he thinks the women were tied up at the house and held there since they were taken. Authorities declined to say whether the women were restrained or if any of them had been sexually assaulted. Berry had last been seen leaving her job at a fast-food restaurant the day before her 17th birthday in April 2003, and DeJesus was last seen walking home from school. After their rescue, the three women were taken to hospital, where they were reunited with family and friends, and released yesterday. “If you don’t believe in miracles, I suggest you think again,” DeJesus’ aunt Sandra Ruiz said to reporters yesterday in Cleveland. “This is a miracle,” Ruiz said. But she added: “Watch

who your neighbour is because you never know.” Ariel Castro, 52, a school bus driver, was arrested, as were his brothers Pedro, 54, and Onil, 50, police said. “We believe we have the people responsible,” Cleveland Deputy Police Chief Ed Tomba said. Cleveland officials said they were investigating how the young women could have gone unnoticed in the neighbourhood where houses sit close together, typically separated only by a driveway. Children and Family Services authorities went to the house in January 2004 after Castro had left a child on a school bus, Mayor Frank Jackson said. They “knocked on the door but were unsuccessful in connection with making any contact with anyone inside that home,” he said. That visit to the house was more than a year after Knight disappeared and a few months after Berry went missing. A mood of jubilation grew as word spread that the women had been found alive in the blue-collar, Latino neighbourhood where the two-storey house was cordoned off with crime-scene tape. But residents said too that they were perplexed by the

case. A man who helped to look for DeJesus, Pastor Angel Arroyo, said he and her family members had handed out flyers years ago in the neighbourhood where she was found. “We didn’t search hard enough. She was right under our nose the whole time,” Arroyo said. During her 911 call, Berry can be heard giving the dispatcher Castro’s name and urging police to come quickly. She indicated that she knew her disappearance had been widely reported in the media. The neighbour who came to her aid told police he heard Berry trying to get out of the house and helped her kick out the bottom of a locked screen door. “The real hero is Amanda,” Tomba said. “She’s the one that got this rolling.” There was no word on the fate of a fourth missing girl, Ashley Summers, who disappeared from the same vicinity in July 2007 at age 14. City Councilwoman Dona Brady, a friend of the Berry family, told Reuters that Berry’s grief-stricken mother had not survived to see her daughter rescued. “She literally died of a broken heart,” Brady said, adding that the mother died aged 47.

Ban strongly condemns peacekeepers’ detention SYRIAN rebels said yesterday they were holding four Filipino UN peacekeepers on the ceasefire line between Syria and the Israelioccupied Golan Heights after clashes in the area had put them in danger. UN Secretary-general Ban Ki-moon strongly condemned the detention and called for the peacekeepers’ immediate release. They were detained as they patrolled close to an area where 21 Filipino observers were held for three days in March. The Yarmouk Martyrs Brigade made the announcement on its facebook page, in a statement accompanied by a picture of four peacekeepers wearing light-blue UN flak jack-

ets marked ‘Philippines’. The same group was responsible for the March incident. “The brigade does not want this issue blown out of proportion like the last incident,” said Abu Iyas al-Hourani, a rebel from the group. “They (the peacekeepers) are safe and sound and will be handed over as soon as possible. But as happened last time, they were in an area where very heavy clashes took place in the Ghadeer al-Bustan area.” Syria’s two-year uprising has increasingly seeped into sensitive frontiers, threatening to draw other countries closer to a conflict that has already killed over 70,000 people in Syria.

THE U.S. Secretary of State sought Russian help in ending Syria’s civil war yesterday, telling President Vladimir Putin in Moscow that common interest in a stable Middle East could bridge divisions among the big powers. Putin, however, kept John Kerry waiting three hours before their meeting at the Kremlin, fiddled with a pen while his guest spoke and made no mention in his own public remarks of the conflict in Syria, which has generated some of the frostiest exchanges between Washington and Moscow since the Cold War. Yet with the killing now in a third year and no end in sight as UN intervention remains stymied by international arguments, Kerry struck a positive tone as he set about trying to narrow differences sufficiently to agree a plan for a settlement that proved out of reach at talks in Geneva almost a year ago. “The United States believes that we share some very significant common interests with respect to Syria - stability in the region, not having extremists creating problems throughout the region and elsewhere,” Kerry told Putin. “We have both embraced

in the Geneva communiqué a common approach, so it’s my hope that today we’ll be able to dig in to that a little bit and see if we can find common ground.” The United States and Russia endorsed a plan in Geneva last June that called for the creation of a transitional government in Syria, where at least 70,000 people have now been killed since March 2011, but which left open the question of what would happen to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Long-time arms supplier to Assad and suspicious of Western aid for opponents of authoritarian leaders around the world, Moscow says Assad’s departure must not be a precondition for a dialogue among Syrians to end the conflict. Russia, backed by China, has refused Western appeals to consider sanctions on Assad, vetoing three U.N. Security Council resolutions condemning his crackdown on opposition groups. The United States, reluctant to give military aid directly to an insurgency that includes militant Islamists but alarmed that violence is continuing and may spread, is making a new push for a joint international approach to contain the conflict.

Business Citigroup sues Barclays over losses

HSBC nearly doubles profits in first quarter

CITIGROUP Inc has sued Barclays Plc to recover more than $141 million (91.2 million pounds) for providing foreign exchange services to a unit of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc soon after Lehman’s bankruptcy. The complaint filed late Monday in the US District Court in Manhattan related to Citigroup’s role in the Continuous Linked Settlement system, which was designed to ensure that foreign exchange trades are completed. Citigroup said it sought to stop settling trades for Lehman’s brokerage unit on September 17, 2008, two days after Lehman went bankrupt, because it was incurring large losses. But Barclays was then in the process of buying Lehman’s US broker-dealer business, and, according to the complaint, urged Citigroup to keep providing the services. It also agreed to indemnify it for losses between September 17-19, 2008. Citigroup said it incurred $580 million in losses over that period, but has reduced the amount to $90.8 million. The $141 million it seeks includes this sum plus interest and legal fees, which Citigroup said are covered by the indemnity. “Barclays stood to gain enormous profits from LBI’s continued ability to settle its FX trades,” Citigroup lawyers said. “In clear breach of the parties’ agreement, Barclays has refused Citibank’s repeated demands that it honour its indemnity.” Lehman’s bankruptcy remains the largest in US history, and was a major cause of the 2008 global financial crisis.

Bad debts charges halve, costs fall 10%

Diageo names Menezes CEO DIAGEO named Ivan Menezes as Chief Executive yesterday, turning to an Indian-born company insider whose role in the British drinks firm’s push into emerging markets points to where it sees its future. Chief Operating Officer Menezes, 53, replaces Paul Walsh, who is stepping down after 13 years, the maker of Johnnie Walker whisky said in an announcement that surprised few investors, even if the timing of Walsh’s exit had not been certain. The value of Diageo has tripled under Walsh and grew by around 30 per cent over the last year alone, as the world’s biggest spirits group has sucked up acquisitions in markets such as Brazil, India and Turkey. But its shares barely reacted to his departure; those close to the firm, which also sells Tanqueray gin, Guinness beer and Smirnoff vodka, said much of the move to emerging markets that is welcomed by investors has been driven by Menezes and others, including American chief financial officer Deirdre Mahlan.

By Steve Slater HSBC aims to keep the pressure on costs after first-quarter earnings nearly doubled due to the bank’s three-year efficiency drive and a halving in bad debts charges. The jump in profits reinforces HSBC’s position as one of the strongest global banks after the financial crisis, partly as a result of a radical overhaul to simplify its sprawling structure and improve profitability. Its strong focus on Asia, which generated around two-thirds of profit in the first quarter, has also helped offset a harsh business environment, particularly in the eurozone. Europe’s largest bank moved faster and more aggressively than many of its peers to cut costs after the crisis. And it will continue to wield the knife - with a further 6,000 job cuts expected this year from businesses already put up for sale, on top of 40,000 already culled. HSBC has closed or sold more than 50 businesses since 2011. “We’re moving into calmer waters but there are still challenges ahead,” Chief Executive Stuart Gulliver told reporters on a conference call. Gulliver declined to say whether he would announce any additional cost savings at a strategy update for investors on May 15. But he said: “Clearly you can expect

Calmer waters: the jump in profits reinforces HSBC’s position as one of the strongest global banks after the financial crisis, partly as a result of a radical overhaul to simplify its sprawling structure and improve profitability us to continue to focus on our cost base.” The CEO said HSBC still expected the eurozone economy to contract during 2013 and that UK economic growth remained muted. Across Europe, HSBC’s smaller rivals are playing catch-up with cost cuts to help offset rising bad debts and weak loan demand. French banks Societe Generale and Credit Agricole yesterday said they would keep making cuts to cope with a weak domestic economy. In Germany, the cost of thousands of job cuts contributed to a net first-quarter loss at Commerzbank, which warned that earnings would be under pressure this year

as loan-loss provisions rise. In contrast, HSBC posted a pretax profit of $8.4 billion, up from $4.3 billion a year ago and above the average forecast of $8.1 billion from analysts polled by the company. “We see these results as an endorsement of the strength of the franchise and its ability to generate earnings even in a sluggish macro environment,” said Chirantan Barua, analyst at Bernstein. He said HSBC’s strong capital position and capital generation meant it could increase its dividend by at least 30 per cent this year. HSBC shares rose more than 3.3 per cent to 737.4 pence, their highest level since mid-March, helping to

drive the European benchmark nearly three per cent higher. A $1.1 billion gain from disposals aided HSBC earnings as did a halving of bad debt provisions to $1.2 billion - its lowest quarterly level since before the financial crisis. The bad debt charge fell across all regions and in particular in the United States, where HSBC is winding down its consumer business. The US consumer book saw a decline in loan-loss provisions of $430 million to $544 million. Costs in the first quarter were down 10 per cent from a year ago and the bank is now saving $4 billion a year on an annualised basis, above

the top end of its own target range of $3.5 billion. HSBC wants to get costs below 52 per cent of income by the end of the year from just over 53 per cent on an underlying basis currently. Analysts say the bank should be able to raise its cost savings target by $1 billion a year. The bank’s investment banking division posted a 16.5 per cent increase in firstquarter pretax profit from a year ago, helped by a strong performance at its equities division. This mirrors strong results from Europe’s other major investment banks such as Deutsche Bank, Barclays, UBS and Credit Suisse.

Schaeuble signals softer stance towards an EU banking union

French Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici (right) takes leave of German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble at the end of a press conference at the finance ministry in Berlin

GERMAN Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble signalled a softening of his stance on a European banking union yesterday, saying the eurozone should press ahead using current law without seeking treaty changes. The banking union is critical to Europe’s efforts to overcome a sovereign debt crisis complicated by the problems of eurozone banks. A first step involves creating a Europe-wide banking supervisor under the European Central Bank, to be followed by a scheme to close or salvage struggling banks. Just last month, Schaeuble appeared to slam on the brakes by saying the European Union needed to consider treaty change before proceeding, due to the “doubtful legal basis” on which the project rested. Those comments sparked a backlash from EU officials and German partners like France. Yesterday however, at a Berlin university event with French counterpart Pierre Moscovici, Schaeuble struck a more conciliatory tone, calling banking union a “priority project” and promising to press ahead with it “quickly”. IMF chief Christine Lagarde emphasised the need for EU countries to concur. “You need to have all the players at the table,” Lagarde, managing director of the International Monetary Fund, told students at the

University of Amsterdam when asked about Germany’s concerns. Schaeuble said that while Europe needed institutional changes in the medium term, it should not wait to solve its current problems. “We must make the best of it on the basis of the current treaties, and where we do not manage to achieve things institutionally, then we will work inter-governmentally or even bilaterally,” he said. Germany, which holds an election in September, has previously emphasised caution and careful preparation in the drive for a banking union, fearing its citizens might wind up picking up much of the liabilities. In Paris, President Francois Hollande welcomed Schaeuble’s comments. “It is absolutely essential that we can have the banking union without changing treaties - that has always been France’s position,” he said. Moscovici told a later news conference in Berlin the EU should aim to make “decisive progress” by the end of June on the banking union. German Chancellor Angela Merkel has insisted on austerity measures to cut the eurozone’s public debt and overcome the crisis, but Moscovici urged Berlin to show more understanding for the plight of struggling southern countries.

Opinion

Real jobs are created by businesses not state subsidising wages WE WISH we could share the optimism of Labour Minister Zeta Emilianidou who believed that the three schemes she announced yesterday would provide work for some 8,000 people who are currently unemployed. Had she not been informed about the unsuccessful schemes that were implemented by her predecessor and did next to nothing in restricting, let alone reducing, unemployment figures? In Cyprus all politicians, irrespective of their ideological background, subscribe to the idea that the state has a moral obligation to create jobs. For decades, this was exactly what our state was doing – creating tens of thousands of unnecessary, highly-paid jobs in the civil service, the National Guard, local government, semi-governmental organisations – and it is the main reason it is now bankrupt. But we still refuse to learn anything from the mistakes of the past. Only a few weeks ago, President Anastasiades announced that the state would hire some 800 unskilled workers on temporary contracts and that all 300 graduates of military academies would be given jobs in the National Guard. We very much doubt the Cyprus army, which already has an absurdly high number of overpaid officers and would still be overstaffed if it got rid of half of them, needs another 300 officers. Emilianidou’s schemes are in line with the thinking that the state should create unproductive jobs. The most ambitious of these aims to create 6,000 jobs in the hotel/tourism industry, at a cost to the taxpayer of €20 million. It seems strange the government is helping out a sector which is in good shape compared to others, and should not need employment subsidies. Perhaps the decision was taken because other sectors of the economy have been so badly hit that not even state subsidies would persuade them to hire people. This is the crux of the matter. With the economy in a deep depression and the banks malfunctioning, unemployment will continue to rise no matter how many job-creation schemes the government comes up with. Real jobs are created by businesses and not by the state subsidising wages. Then again, the government wants to be seen to be doing something about the rising number of jobless and the announcement of job-creation schemes is better than nothing. As things are, the number of the jobless would keep rising, while wages in the private sector would keep falling, no matter how many schemes the government announces. This unfortunately is the reality and there is very little that can be done by the state to change it.

Alexander Downer’s odious transgression I

T IS quite obvious, that when the Special Representative of the UN Secretarygeneral, Mr. Alexander Downer met, as it was reported, the so-called foreign minister and prime minister of the illegal regime in the north, he was aiming at upgrading the so-called Turkish-Cypriot state. Moreover, according to reports, he tried to organise through the British High Commission, which pretends that it favours the reunion of Cyprus, a meeting of the ambassadors of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council (P5) in the occupied areas. Time wise, these actions coincide with the pressure exercised by Turkey for the start of the negotiations and the meeting of the P5 in the occupied area would have proved beneficial. Fortunately, the firm stand of the ambassadors of Russia and China, who did not attend the meeting, strictly observing the UN resolutions and the terms of reference of the good offices mission of the UN Secretary-general, averted this possibility. The French ambassador went to the meeting, but stated that it was regrettable the fact that the British High Commissioner hosted the meeting in the north, thus hindering the presence of the Russian and Chinese ambassadors. These moves by Mr Downer were highly unproductive, as they created a negative climate and prompted the reaction not only of the government, but also of the political parties and the Church, which asked the withdrawal of Mr Downer. It is of interest to look into the legal aspects of Mr Downer’s misconduct within the framework of the good offices mission of the UN Secretary-general. The Security Council with two Resolutions, 244 (1967) of 22 December 1967 and 367 (1975) of 12 March 1975 invited the parties to avail themselves of the good offices of the Secretary-general with a view to finding a solution to the Cyprus problem. It is according to Article 98 of the Charter – providing that the Secretary-general “shall perform such other functions as are entrust-

Comment Andrestinos Papadopoulos ed to him by General Assembly, the Security Council…” – that the executive organ of the UN entrusted to Ban Ki-moon and his predecessors the mission of good offices to Cyprus. Performing this duty the Secretary-general should act in accordance with the purposes and principles of the Charter, the norms of international law and UN Resolutions. This view was supported by former Secretarygenerals Dag Hammarskjold and U-Thant, who regarded that “strict compliance with the aims and principles of the Charter was sine qua non of every exercise of good offices by the Secretary-general.” More importantly, the International Court of Justice in the “Expenses Case” - when the Court gave an opinion on whether certain expenses had been validly authorised by a series of General Assembly Resolutions – said that the validity of the United Nations actions should be tested in the light of the Charter’s aims, and distinguished international lawyers, such as the late Professor Derek Bowett, take the view that when the Secretary-general acts under a specific resolution it is his practice to consider it as biding terms or reference. These are, therefore, the terms of reference of the good office mission of the UN Secretary-general and his Special Representative should act within this framework with due respect of the UN resolutions. One wonders whether Mr Downer is not aware of Resolution 186 (1964) of 4th March 1964, which created UNFICYP, where there is a specific reference to the “sovereign Republic of Cyprus”, and more importantly of Resolution 541 (1983) of 18th November 1983, which

Downer: highly unproductive moves considers the Turkish Cypriot UDI “as legally invalid and calls for its withdrawal”, while at the same time is “calling upon all states not to recognise any Cypriot State other than the Republic of Cyprus.” In view of the above, any attempt to upgrade the so-called Turkish Cypriot state through policies of equal distances runs counter to the UN Resolutions, the Charter and the decisions of the International Court of Justice. Dr Andrestinos N Papadopoulos is a former ambassador of Cyprus

Drones and Guantanamo: no strategic thinking JOHN Bellinger is the last person in Washington you’d expect to criticise President Barack Obama for making too many drone strikes. It was he who drafted the (rather unconvincing) legal justification for targeted drone killings when he was legal adviser to the Secretary of State in George W. Bush’s second administration, and he still supports them. But he went ahead and criticised Obama anyway. Speaking at a conference at the Bipartisan Policy Centre in Washington on 1 May, Bellinger said: “This government has decided that instead of detaining members of al-Qaeda (at Guantanamo), they are going to kill them.” Leaving aside the question of whether most of the people detained at Guantanamo were ever actually members of al-Qaeda, there is a certain amount of plausibility in this accusation. President Obama wants to close the US prison camp on the Cuban coast where hundreds of suspected supporters of alQaeda have been held without charge, some for more almost a decade. There are still 166 prisoners at Guantanamo, and just last week Obama, having been thwarted by Congress in his first-term pledge to close the place, announced his intention

Comment Gwynne Dyer to try again with the new Congress. The US president was quite eloquent about why Guantanamo should be closed. “It is expensive. It is inefficient. It hurts us in terms of our international standing. It lessens cooperation with our allies on counter-terrorism. It is a recruitment tool for extremists. It needs to be closed.” It also flouts international law, but even foreign-born Muslim socialist presidents of the United States can never concede that the whole enterprise was illegal. The furthest Obama will go is to say that it was counter-productive from the start, but that alone should be a sufficient justification for closing the place. So why did John Bellinger, of all people, then accuse Obama of using drones too often? The US president certainly does seem to like them: the vast majority of the 370 US drone attacks, killing an estimated 3,500 people, have been carried out on his watch. According to Bellinger,

it’s because Obama knows that if he can’t send the evil-doers to Guantanamo, his only alternative is to kill them with drone strikes. What we actually have here is an unusually subtle Republican argument: if you don’t like the drone strikes (because they kill lots of innocent people), then you should keep Guantanamo open. But subtle is not the same as valid. There are two unstated assumptions at the heart of this argument. One is that the US could put its drones away and just capture the people it suspects of being al-Qaeda supporters by conventional means and lock them away in Guantanamo. No fuss, no muss, and no innocent “collateral damage.” That’s ridiculous: the United States is not going to have much luck in tracking down alleged alQaeda supporters in the wilds of Yemen or Afghanistan and spiriting them away to Guantanamo. If it doesn’t target them with drones, then most of them will go on living (and so will the innocent people nearby). But you can’t just leave such dangerous people alive, can you? This brings us to the second unstated assumption: that if all those dangerous people had been allowed to live, then there would have been hundreds of ter-

rorist attacks against the United States. Or at least dozens. Okay then, how about a couple? Probably not even one. After all, there were no drone strikes for the first three years after the 9/11 attacks in 2001, because the technology was not yet available. Yet even then, when al-Qaeda was still a relatively strong and cohesive organisation, there was not one further terrorist attack on the United States. The link between drone strikes and possible terrorist attacks on the United States is purely rhetorical. Never mind. The whole argument is moot. Obama won’t get the Republican majority in the House of Representatives to go along with closing Guantanamo this time either. And he won’t stop the drone strikes because he needs to be seen by the American public to be doing something “positive” as he brings the American troops home from another needless and lost war. There is not one iota of strategic thinking in any of this. It’s all about American domestic politics, as the response to 9/11 has been from the beginning. Hip hop star Lauryn Hill is jailed for tax evasion

Iron Man 3 soars with huge $175m in debut

Told court she pulled away from society because life was in crisis

By Lisa Richwine and Patricia Reaney

By David Jones A US magistrate judge sentenced Grammy-winning hip hop artist Lauryn Hill to three months in prison, three months in home confinement and a $60,000 fine this week for federal tax evasion. Hill pleaded guilty last year to three counts of failing to file tax returns on more than $1.8 million of income between 2005 and 2007 and faced up to three years in prison. Hill has attributed her failure to pay taxes to years of pressure she experienced as a recording star while raising six children, forcing her to go underground and stay out of the public eye. On the eve of her scheduled sentencing, Hill paid $504,000 in back taxes to the Internal Revenue Service and another $420,000 to the state of New Jersey, her attorney told the court. She still owes another $285,000 in interest and penalties. “When the government is asking for 36 months and the judge gives three months, I think the judge gave a fair and reasonable sentence,” Hill’s attorney Nathan Hochman told reporters. Prosecutors had asked for a sentence of 30 months to the maximum of 36 months. US Magistrate Judge Madeline Cox Arleo cited Hill’s lack of a criminal record, her six children and her repayment of the back taxes as mitigating factors in the sentence. Hill must report on or before July 8. Her attorney asked the court to assign the native of South Orange,

The Grammy-winning star pleaded guilty last year to three counts of failing to file tax returns on more than $1.8 million of income between 2005 and 2007 and faced up to three years in prison New Jersey, to a facility close to home. The three months of home confinement following the prison stay is part of one year of supervised probation. Hill told the court she pulled away from society because her life was in crisis, she had received veiled

threats and was blacklisted because she did not conform to the norms of the music industry. “I was being perceived as a cash cow, not a person,” Hill said. A new single by Hill, her first in several years, called ‘Neurotic Society’, was

posted on iTunes on Friday. “Here is a link to a piece that I was ‘required’ to release immediately, by virtue of the impending legal deadline,” her Tumblr social media page said on Saturday. Her lawyers confirmed that she signed a new contract with Sony Worldwide

Entertainment and was working on her first album of new material in more than a decade. Hill’s seminal 1998 solo album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill won the singer, a former member of the Fugees rap trio, five Grammy awards.

Mirren reads royal riot JT announces tour, new album act to noisy drummers ACTRESS Helen Mirren has delivered another show-stopping performance as Britain’s Queen Elizabeth after storming out of a London theatre dressed as the monarch to deliver an expletive-riddled tirade at a group of drummers ruining the play. Infuriated by loud drumming outside the Gielgud Theatre, where Mirren is portraying the queen in the play The Audience, she burst out in full costume during the interval on Saturday night to tell them to shut up, with a few swear words thrown in for good measure. “I’m afraid there were a few ‘thespian’ words used. They got a very stern royal ticking off but I have to say they were very sweet and they stopped immediately,” Mirren told the Daily Telegraph newspaper. Mirren, 67, who last month added the best actress gong at Britain’s top theatre honours to the Academy Award she won for the 2006 film The Queen, said the drumming had got so loud it was disturbing cast and theatre-goers alike. Audience members said they had tried unsuccessfully to silence the drummers, but the sight of one of Britain’s most prestigious actors dressed as the monarch did the trick. Footage captured on mobile phone and aired on Sky News showed an angry Mirren, attired in tiara and pearls, accosting the drummers, waving her arms and gesticulating angrily before the music was brought to a sudden stop.

Justin Timberlake and wife Jessica Biel

JUSTIN Timberlake will embark on an international tour in October - his first in six years - and will release 10 new songs at the end of September, concert promoter Live Nation said. The 20/20 Experience, the singer’s first album in seven years, was released in March and topped the US album charts for three consecutive weeks. He is now planning to release 10 new songs, and out-takes from the March release, in a second instalment of The 20/20 Experience on September 30, record label RCA said. The North American leg of Timberlake’s tour will begin on October 31 in Montreal and finish on February 10, 2014, in Omaha, Nebraska. It will follow an abbreviated summer stadium tour with rapper Jay-Z. The release of The 20/20 Experience was the first new music from Timberlake, 32, since 2006.

SUPERHERO sequel Iron Man 3 rocketed to the top of US and Canadian box office charts, kicking off Hollywood’s summer movie season with $175.3 million in weekend ticket sales for the second-biggest film opening of all time. Combined with international sales, the movie from Walt Disney’s Marvel studio brought its global haul to an estimated $680.1 million, Disney said. The film stars Robert Downey Jr. as billionaire businessman Tony Stark, whose superhero alter-ego spars with an evil extremist. Iron Man 3 fed off the success of the first two instalments plus last year’s The Avengers, a superhero mashup that united Iron Man, The Hulk and other Marvel characters. Avengers opened on the same weekend last year with $207.4 million over its first three days, a record for the United States and Canada. Iron Man 3 finished second on the all-time list behind Avengers and ahead of the July 2011 release of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2, which opened with $169.2 million, according to the box office division of Hollywood.com. “It is an extraordinary start,” said Dave Hollis, Disney’s executive vice president of distribution. “The start on the US side is something that we are exceptionally proud of.” The $200-million production is another hit for Disney, which is focusing its movie studio on franchise films like Iron Man that can spawn movie sequels, toy sales and theme-park rides. The two previous Iron Man movies earned a combined $1.2 billion around the world, according to the Box Office Mojo website. Iron Man 3 debuted in international markets starting April 24 to record openings in many countries including China and Russia, generating buzz ahead of its release the United States and Canada. The big domestic numbers for Iron Man 3 boosted the overall box office, which is dragging behind 2012 after a sluggish winter and spring. Studios are counting on summer action films, superhero stories and sequels to lift ticket sales in the coming months. Future releases include sci-fi sequel Star Trek Into Darkness, Superman reboot Man of Steel and robot-versus-aliens action flick Pacific Rim. The Iron Man mania trounced all other movies over the weekend. Last week’s winner, dark action comedy Pain & Gain, dropped to second place with $7.6 million. Baseball drama 42 took the No.3 slot with $6.2 million.

schools report The stars shine bright in ISOP play “SHAKESPEARE with a twist” was the motto of the annual drama production at The International School of Paphos. A cast of 40, including pupils from the primary and secondary departments and even some alumni, presented a modernised version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream and had the audience by turns enthralled and roaring with laughter. Head of The International School, Dr. Litsa Olympiou commented: “This is exactly what we needed in these difficult times: Some light relief.” Following last year’s raging success with a contemporary take on the ancient Greek tragedy Antigone, Drama teacher Mrs Michelle Nonyelu had decided to give the bard’s famous comedy the ISOP treatment. In her production, a class of Literature students visit a Shakespeare museum, complaining that they don’t

“get” the play. So the exhibits in the museum come alive and show them what it is all about, while the teenagers’ cheeky comments continuously link the action to the here and now. As a result, everybody has fun and learns that Shakespeare matters. The audience was impressed with the enthusiasm, professionalism and sheer talent shown by the young actors, dancers and singers. From the gravitas and stilted tones of the Athens court, to the swagger and confusion of the enchanted lovers, the other-worldliness of the elves and the hilarious antics of the craftsmen – it was all there in perfect balance. One parent summed it up: “In this cast, everyone is a star.” The International School of Paphos (ISOP) is this year celebrating 25 years of existence. Since 1987, it has been

providing high quality education, with individualised attention for each of its students. ISOP is a fully recognised private school which ranges from Kindergarten to ‘A’ Level. Its curriculum, while modelled on the English National Curriculum, is specially enhanced to suit the needs of the Cypriot community as well as those of its multicultural student intake. Its facilities include fully air-conditioned and centrally-heated classrooms, four science and three computer labs, interactive whiteboards in several rooms and outstanding sports facilities, including an astroturf football pitch, tennis and basketball court, as well as a heated indoor swimming pool, an indoor gym and performance centre. The playgrounds are enhanced by artificial grass and coloured stamped concrete surfaces, lending a friendly, park-like appearance to the school’s spacious campus.

‘Primary schools have to educate kids against FGM’ Push to identify danger to female pupils in UK before summer By Martin Bentham SCOTLAND Yard has appealed for information to identify the perpetrators of female genital mutilation amid growing indications that girls are being “cut” in London. Detective Chief Superintendent Keith Niven, the head of the Yard’s child abuse command, said officers would “relentlessly pursue” those carrying out the practice and had already received “a variety of pieces of information” that the illegal practice was being inflicted here. He added that further information was needed to protect girls from the “appalling” physical and psychological damage caused by the crime. “The information that we are getting is that this crime takes place abroad, but that it also takes place here and we have to take that seriously,” Niven told the Evening Standard. “Historically, we have looked at this very much in terms of victims coming forward, but there is a very low level of reporting of this crime. So we also want people who have information about where it is happening to speak to us so we can identify the individuals who are cutting girls and gather evidence with a view to prosecution.” Niven said that tip-offs could be provided anonymously via the Crimestoppers number or to charities such as the NSPCC, and that all those providing information would be treated sensitively and offered any support that they might need. He added that one reason for the new approach was that victims were often reluctant to testify because many of those carrying out cutting, or organising it, were relatives or friends. That made it difficult for

Julia Lalla-Maharajh gave up her job in London to campaign to stop female genital mutilation them to speak out. Police could, however, gather evidence separately if pointed towards potential suspects, and bring offenders to justice. Praising the Evening Standard for highlighting the issue, Niven said that the impact of genital mutilation was now being brought fully “into the open” after being an “underground” problem for many years. “People are beginning to understand the enormity of this crime. There are significant psychological, physical and emotional impacts that can last through childhood and later life,” he added. “We want to send out the message that the UK is not somewhere you can come and get away with this. If you come here and we get information that you are engaging in this crime then we will relentlessly pursue you with a view to prosecution.”

Female genital mutilation, which involves the removal of all or parts of the labia and clitoris, was made a crime in 1985, but no charges have been brought so far. The Met has warned that it will also seek to prosecute parents and others who arrange trips for girls to be cut overseas. For British residents, anyone with information should contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or the NSPCC on 0808 800 5000. Meanwhile, London primary schools must start educating children about the risks of female genital mutilation before the summer holidays, experts have warned. Thousands of young girls are taken abroad for the procedure during the long break before secondary school begins. Children aged 10 and 11 in Bristol are being taught about it as part of health education for the first time,

and charities have recently called on London schools to help girls spot whether they or their friends may be at risk. Julia Lalla-Maharajh, founder of the Orchid Project, which is working to end female genital mutilation, said: “We must come up with ways of talking about this, particularly as summer holidays are coming up, when many girls are at risk.” St Werburgh’s in Bristol is thought to be the first UK primary school to address the subject, while 10 others in the city have been given training. At four secondary schools, role play and a DVD help teenagers to spot and report the crime. St Werburgh’s headteacher Claire Smith said: “They need to know that if someone starts talking about becoming a woman or becoming clean, with a holiday or a celebration and presents, they should talk to somebody.”

US grads urged to take part in politics PRESIDENT Barack Obama has urged U.S. college graduates to participate in politics, adding that without broad public involvement special interest groups can defeat legislation supported by the majority. Obama, who said he is “obsessed with this issue” of inspiring citizens to engage with the political system, in a commencement address to Ohio State University, was indirectly referring to the recent defeat of a proposal to expand background checks for gun purchases. The measure enjoyed broad support among Americans, but was then defeated in the US Senate. Obama told students they need to vote and run for office and said that giving in to cynicism gave room for lobbyists and “the well-connected” to get their way in Washington. “That’s how a small minority of lawmakers get cover to defeat something the vast majority of their constituents want,” he told the crowd of over 57,000 at Ohio State University, including the 10,000 graduates. Obama and his supporters have said it is up to voters to hold their elected representatives accountable for the vote. “Class of 2013: you can ultimately break that cycle. Only you can make sure the democracy you inherit is as good as we know it can be. But it requires your dedicated, informed and engaged citizenship,” he said. The US president’s remarks came as polls by the Harvard University Institute of Politics showed the “millennial” crop of students - an age bracket that has backed him in his election campaigns - is becoming fed up with politics. Obama usually delivers a few commencement addresses each spring. The Ohio State University address this past Sunday was his first.

At home in the UK: Redford and London go way back

All is Lost

Fed up with his festival in Utah, the Sundance Kid has ridden into London’s O2. Robert Redford tells Nick Curtis why he loves London’s rebellious streak

H

OW does he look? Remarkable. Trim, tawny, the bone structure good, the cornflower eyes arresting. More impressive yet is the presence. When he ambles into a cinema full of journalists you can feel the frisson: it’s Robert Redford! He was in London to launch the second London offshoot of the Sundance Festival of Film and Music that he’s run from his Utah fastness since 1985.

But he’s also the Sundance Kid to Paul Newman’s Butch Cassidy, Bob Woodward in All the President’s Men and for many the definitive Jay Gatsby. He’s been famous for longer than I’ve been alive. The all-American movie star is 76 now and the stunts he did for JC Chandor’s forthcoming All Is Lost, in which he plays a lone, wordless sailor battling the elements, have taken their toll. “I lost part of my hearing,”

he tells me when we sit down for his first full UK interview in years. “That’s why I was having a hard time today with some of the questions in there.” A thirty - something colleague wants me to tell him she loves him, but I get the feeling that, slightly deaf or not, this is something he still hears every day. What made him think London would be a good fit for Sundance? “If you look at the history of both countries as it

The Great Gatsby: as Jay Gatsby with Mia Farrow in the 1974 film

relates to young people and maybe artists, we have something in common,” he says. “A rebellious nature - it’s too harsh to say ‘revolutionary’ that breaks out periodically and brings change.” The current arc of American independent cinema echoes past upsurges in British fashion (“Carnaby Street!”) and film. “I like the comparison, legitimate or not,” he smiles. (The teeth are preternaturally even and white.) He was nervous about bringing the first Sundance spinoff to the huge 02 in 2012, but eventually decided that “being a bit removed” in Greenwich felt properly respectful of the native industry – not the big Yank barging in. He won’t pick a favourite from this year’s selection culled from the Utah programme, because “it might show a prejudice I don’t have”, but it’s clearly the Eagles documentary, which the band attended: “Don Henley’s a friend.” The benign impassivity that makes him such a fine film actor, not just a star, manifests in person as a courtliness that makes you wonder if he’s got a dead

Now celebs and crowds and corporate culture have marred the Utah event. London is more enjoyable body in his freezer. It’s a shame he hasn’t played more villains. Redford was in Greenwich for the full four days of Sundance London, whereas “I try to leave my own festival as soon as I can get out… it’s not the fun it was.” He first bought property in Utah in the 1960s, began running workshops for film-makers through the Sundance Institute in 1981 and started the festival in nearby Park City in 1985 as a showcase. “The first year we had no support, no money to work with, maybe 25 films and maybe 150… 200 people wandering the streets,” he says. “I would be standing outside the [movie] theatre trying to get people inside, like a guy

outside a strip joint.” Now celebs and crowds and corporate culture have marred the Utah event. London is more enjoyable. He and London go way back. “The very first time I came here was in 1957 when I was an artist,” he recalls. “I was coming home after studying in Paris and Italy, and I didn’t have enough money to stay in London so I hitchhiked up to Edinburgh in a lorry and back down again. Because at least I could sleep in the cab, talk to people, meet people.” After his return to America, acting on TV and on Broadway took over from art, just as art had taken over from his baseball scholarship to the University of Colorado, and eventually

Hollywood took him over entirely till he started trying to make his own destiny. His career has brought him back to the UK capital many times and he loves it, albeit with reservations. “I look for the old,” he says. “What attracts me is the history of this place, the Christopher Wren buildings. I have a granddaughter who is a student at Oxford and I came to visit her two days ago when I arrived, and we revisited them. To see those buildings juxtaposed against steel and glass boxes is sort of strange. Why wouldn’t Great Britain celebrate these wonderful buildings? These new ones look like buildings anywhere, there’s no romance to them. But maybe that’s oldfashioned…” Redford has five grandchildren and three surviving children from his 26-year marriage to Lola Van Wagenen - their firstborn son Scott died in infancy. He and Lola divorced in 1985 and Redford married his subsequent longtime partner, German artist Sibylle Szaggars, in 2009. We talk about the Occupy movement, at both Wall

Street and St Paul’s, and how it tied in with Redford’s love of periodic rebellion as a force for renewal: “I am always excited when the people try to find their own voice against any kind of dominant overwhelming force, whether it’s corporate, political or the Supreme Court.” In his ninth and latest film as director, The Company You Keep, he plays a member of the radical anti-Vietnam War movement the Weather Underground, and the plot turns in part on how the group’s idealism is shattered when a bank guard is shot in a robbery. Redford is, of course, famously liberal, particularly on environmental issues and increasingly on gun control. Hours before we met, the Today programme reported that America’s level of violent crime would be the same as the UK’s if they had he latter’s gun laws. And, of course, the Boston bombing is on both our minds. “That’s a wonderful point,” he says of the Today report. “Anything that makes violence easier, whether it is a bomb or a gun, is not helpful. They have no place in civil life. It’s shocking to me that we haven’t had the courage yet to weigh against the National Rifle Association – the power it has to

lobby, it shows the weakness of our Congress.” He sees a clear causal link between violent video games and “films in which violence is celebrated”, and the ease with which teenagers can progress to ownership of real weapons: “It is enviable that you have your laws. We are behind the curve and the results are obvious.” We turn back to films. Redford grumbles that of all the talents helped by Sundance, only JC Chandor has offered him an acting job. He has now abandoned plans for a sequel to his 1974 political satire The Candidate, “because there’s nothing left to say. People know all there is to know about politics. The curtain has been lifted. And the film didn’t change anything: things are still as bad as they were.” He is sure Baz Luhrmann’s remake of the “timeless” Great Gatsby will be great (“and I’m sure over time there will be another one”) and feels no sense of ownership of his version: “I got rid of the clothes as quickly as I could. The clothes maker - Ralph Lauren - wanted me to model them. I said, no, no, no, no, no. Last day of shooting, the clothes go.” A crassly casual remark I make about how many of his

closest collaborators have died prompts him to a conversely sweet and eloquent tribute to Sydney Pollack, who directed him in seven movies; George Roy Hill, who cast him in Butch Cassidy; and Paul Newman, who fought for him to get the part of Sundance and became his great pal. “The friendship we had and the friendship in the film were almost interchangeable,” Redford says, “and in The Sting [one of the highest grossing films ever] we just carried that further. When Paul passed it was the loss of a real friend. The squadron’s thinning. It’s kind of an odd feeling.” Our time is nearly up, and something has been nagging at me. Redford has worked twice with Brad Pitt, and I wonder if he saw in Pitt a kindred spirit, an actor, artist and activist trapped by a beautiful face. “Not consciously,” he says, “although it is undeniable when you look at it. I like Brad a lot but I haven’t seen him for a while. I don’t know how he’s changed but certainly it seems his heart’s in the right place and he is trying to put something back.” Get him along to Sundance London 2014, I say. “I think he’s moving in that direction,” he deadpans.

On The Scene Music Real life guitar heroes THE dynamic sound of the guitar can claim to be a versatile instrument transcending musical genres from classical to heavy metal. This week local audiences can celebrate the world of guitar in its many diverse forms at the Eighth Guitar Festival, organised by the European Guitar Teachers Association (EGTA) Cyprus, a non-profit organisation formed in 2001 with the aim of promoting guitar in Cyprus. As in previous years, the festival encompasses a range of concerts and a competition for young student guitarists from Cyprus. This event will allow you an ‘up close and personal’ opportunity with some of the world’s finest exponents of the instrument, a boast perhaps very few other festivals of this kind and quality can make. The upcoming festival will take place in Limassol and Nicosia. The whole affair begins on Friday with the Giampaolo Bandini – Cesare Chiacchiaretta Duo, Concert Hall at Philopimenos. A classical guitar and bandoneon duo, they formed in 2002 in order to pursue traditional Argentine music using the charm and magic of the country’s

Origami artist Eric Joisel in the documentary Between the Folds and (below) the artwork Taking Curves to the Limit 2009 by Erik Demaine

WHEN you look at a piece of paper what do you see? If your answer is a flat, two-dimensional square, then the documentary Between the Folds will astound you. On Friday the Loukia & Michael Zampelas Art Museum is screening Vanessa Gould’s award– winning Between the Folds, a film that will make you look at paper folding in a whole other way. Do you think origami is just paper planes and cranes? Meet the fertile minds behind these amazing works. Origami may seem an unlikely medium for understanding and explaining the world. But around the globe, several fine artists and theoretical scientists are abandoning more conventional career paths to forge lives as modern-day paper folders. Together they reinterpret the world in paper, creating a wild mix of sensibilities towards art, science, creativity and meaning. The stories of 10 artists and scientists are unfolded over the course of the documentary. These minds include the ‘world’s leading origami theorist’ Erik Demaine, and former NASA physicist Robert J Lang, as well as educator Miri Golan and theorist Tom Hull. The eccentric artists and scientists in Between the Folds envision the three-dimensional possibilities of paper and change the mundane into the poetic and magical - all without scissors, tape or glue. Nobody before had been able to reveal the magic and beauty of modern-day origami: the film explores not only aesthetics, but also the scientific applications of the ancient Japanese art, which is employed, for instance, for molecular modelling in pharmaceutical manufacture. Gould is well versed in astrophysics and computer science and was particularly intrigued by the modern day advances in origami. She felt that the connection between origami and maths being explored by artists and engineers all over the world was a story that had not been captured on film. Between the Folds has won numerous Best Documentary Awards and Audience Awards. Portions of the film have also been installed in museums and gallery exhibitions in the US and Europe. Set to an original score composed by Gil Talmi and performed by members of the Budapest Symphony Orchestra, the film is just the kind of offbeat programming that succeeds

in attracting local audiences. Following the screening origami artist Dimmis Petrides will be on hand to talk about the world ugh of origami through his experiences,, as se part well as showcase of his work. For those asterinterested in mastert ing the 17th century artt craft, Petrides will be giving origami classes for adults and children at Loukia & Michael Zampelas Art Museum. Also worth noting, in view of the museum’s first birthday and World Museum Day the museum is inviting crowds to contribute to the creation of a collective art work entirely made from paper birds (origami birds). The artwork will be exhibited at the museum’s gallery with free entrance to the public. Even though the origami birds will be created individually they will be exhibited collectively in an effort to highlight the bird as a symbol of freedom, and by extension, the flock of birds as a symbol of togetherness and solidarity. Currently underway, the creation of the project will run until the end of May. Between the Folds Screening of award-winning documentary that captures the work of modern origami masters from around the globe, including scientists and artists. Followed by talk by local origami expert Dimmis Petrides, who will also be giving origami classes for adults and children. May 10. Loukia and Michael Zampelas Art Museum, 27 Arch. Makarios III Avenue, Kaimakli, Nicosia. 7.30pm-9pm. In Enlgish. For more information about the classes and on how to book for the screening please call 22456099/22-456093 The Origami Project A collective art work entirely made from paper birds (origami birds), which will be exhibition in the museum. The Raven (Novacinema2, 22.00) “Over my dead body!” says someone. “Is that an option?” replies Edgar Allan Poe. That’s right folks, the father of modern horror (and author of the poem called ‘The Raven’) has gone the way of Robert Downey Jr’s snarky Sherlock Holmes, snapping out quips about “a mental oyster” and “a marsupial of an editor” and generally being a smart-aleck. Poe (John Cusack) is not a success - he offers drinks to any patron in a tavern who can finish a line from his poem, but only a visiting Frenchman even knows what he’s on about! - but he has a fan in the shape of a serial killer who’s basing his grisly murders on our hero’s oeuvre, inevitably making him a suspect. The result

never rises above the conventional, and the murders are off-puttingly nasty (that swinging cleaver!), but it’s still quite a (g)ripping yarn, with enough of Poe in some purple dialogue to suggest some fellow feeling behind the gimmickry. Watch it on a midnight dreary / While you ponder weak and weary. Made in 2012.

Homeless: The Motel Kids of Orange County (LTV3, 23.00) “What is home to you?” asks Alexandra Pelosi, who made this HBO documentary. “Home?” repeats a bright-eyed little girl who can’t be more than 10 years old; “I don’t really know what that means”. These kids aren’t strictly speaking homeless - they don’t live on

the street - but their low-income families can’t afford even to rent a flat so instead they live in extendedstay motels, often with a whole family crammed into a single room. “Working families struggling to make it in one of the richest places in the country,” says the trailer - and that’s really the point, not that these kids have it incredibly bad but that they should have it so much better (Orange County is a well-off part of California, home to Disneyland among other things). Parents lament the bad economy while their offspring look bored and dodge their dodgy, crime-ridden surroundings; easy to empathise - especially when the kids are so cute - though Cypriots may feel we have our own problems to worry about. Made in 2010.

ARIES March 21 - April 20

LEO July 23 - August 22

SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 21

The Moon passes over Mars today, and this could make you more conscious of your possessions, money in general, or even your values. But this combination, though brief, could also arouse some annoyance about the cost of your bills, especially for things like utilities. You may also be more protective of things you own, especially if you feel taken for granted.

People can see that you are a charismatic person, but this is one of those days when you will need to earn rather than demand respect. If you are overly bossy or demanding at home, rather than motivating people to do what you want, it can actually push them away from you. Work to foster a constructive use of your authority and power potential.

Little things can be a source of satisfaction OR irritation today. If you get your head down and put all your energies into getting things done, you might find yourself in a very productive space. The downside is that you may have less patience with others. People’s little ways and idiosyncrasies can get under your skin. This may see you dish out some criticism.

TAURUS April 21 - May 21

VIRGO August 23 - September 23

CAPRICORN December 22 - January 20

You might find it harder to see the viewpoints of others today. You will likely hone in on exactly how you see situations and may even border on being brusque, certainly less patient. Yet, there can be an upside to this, and it can give you the drive to get things done. So, if you can clear the decks and focus on one narrow thing, you can do well.

Today has a number of potentials. You might encounter someone who is a tad too evangelical, with a tendency to enforce their viewpoint and credo upon you. However, equally, this might be how someone views you. Some truths are practical - i.e. the price of a loaf of bread, others are more to do with our perspective. Neither browbeat nor be browbeaten Virgo.

You could feel more amorous, playful, but also restless. Routines, dull everyday needs, can leave you cold. You want some excitement, and may find yourself attracted to those who have something exciting or daring about them. If you have talents, look to make the most of them. If you have children, look to encourage their creativity too.

GEMINI May 22 - June 21

LIBRA September 24 - October 23

AQUARIUS January 21 - February 19

How are you finding Mars sweeping through your 12th Solar House? This began in the middle of last month, but it may have had the effect of stirring up buried angers that you had previously long forgotten about. Today, such legacy emotions have a much stronger chance of suddenly erupting to the surface. Your mood could be tender to say the least.

You might have found yourself much more on the front foot about debts, business and longer term finances. However, today, the chances are your determination can become influenced by more subjective issues. This could see you make some snap judgements or be more confrontational towards another person. Talk to an advisor if you are unsure.

Your mood could be very changeable today. It may be hard for people around you to keep up with what you want and need. This may see you making some physical changes to your home, or falling out with a loved one. It’s best not to invest too much time and energy in your short term whims today, for very soon your outlook could alter all over again.

CANCER June 22 - July 22

SCORPIO October 24 - November 22

PISCES February 20 - March 20

Group dynamics can be less serene today. Someone in your circle may seem flustered or worse. It’s possible a friend can seem less approachable. You may also have a change of mind about something which previously you’d shown every prospect of seeing through to its conclusion. Long term hopes and aspirations can shift now Cancer.

Relationship, competitive and partnership issues have been much to the fore recently, but if you are not quite getting what you want, today, you may feel like telling it how it is, or more to the point, tell it how you think it is. Someone else may have a very different view, and this could lead to a clash of the Titans! It will be important to listen, too.

You could find yourself needing a lot of mental stimulation today. But...anyone or anything which is rather dull, can leave you cold. You could however, have several changes of mind, or feel fidgety and find it hard to sit still for more than a few minutes. Find something to do that challenges and inspires you all at the same time.

Sport Pacquiao returns to the ring against Rios By Patrick Johnston MANNY Pacquiao will return to the ring to fight American Brandon Rios in a 12-round welterweight clash in Macau on November 24, the Filipino’s publicist told Reuters yesterday. It will be Pacquiao’s first fight since he was knocked out by Juan Manuel Marquez in December, a defeat that prompted many to suggest the 34-year-old should retire after being left unconscious, face down on the canvas by his Mexican

rival. However, Pacquiao, winner of world titles in eight different weight divisions, has ignored the calls to quit and after the lengthy break will fight at the Cotai Arena in The Venetian Macao-Resort and Hotel, Fred Sternburg said. It will be a first bout outside the United States since 2006 for Pacquiao 54-5-2 (38 knockouts), who also lost to Timothy Bradley in his only other bout last year. The back-to-back defeats have seemingly ended all hope of a lucrative clash

against undefeated American Floyd Mayweather Jr. Rios 31-1-1 (23 knockouts) is also coming off a loss, Mike Alvarado claiming a unanimous points decision in their March contest in Las Vegas. Pacquiao’s trainer Freddy Roach predicted a swift end to the non-title bout. “Manny is definitely going to get his mojo back with this fight,” Roach told ESPN.com. “I think it’ll be an exciting fight but that Manny is going to land ... and knock this guy out somewhere along

the way. Rios likes to exchange and his style is not really difficult to figure out, so Manny’s gonna hit him.” Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum is confident the two fighters will be able to thrill the fans. “People know what Rios brings to the table,” Arum told ESPN.com. “People want to see a real fight, and that is what you get with Rios. We’re building a business in Macau and China and these are the kinds of fights - real action fights - that they want to see.”

Sky choose Froome over Wiggins Last year’s runner-up to lead Tour de France bid

By Nemanja Bjedov

By Julien Pretot

IN BRIEF

CHRIS Froome, and not last year’s winner Bradley Wiggins, will be Team Sky’s leader on the Tour de France, the British team’s head Dave Brailsford said this week, ending months of speculation. “As always, the team selection is a management decision and it will be evidencebased. However, it is crucial there is clarity of purpose and, for that reason, we will go to the Tour with one leader,” Brailsford said on Team Sky’s website (www.teamsky. com). “Taking that into consideration and given Chris’ step up in performances this year, our plan, as it has been since January, is to have him lead the Tour de France team.” Wiggins, whose primary target this season is the Giro d’Italia, won the Tour last year after it had been made clear by Sky’s management that he, and not fellow Briton Froome, was the sole leader on the race. Froome expressed frustration on the bike as he at times

Baghdatis beaten by Robredo in Madrid

Deadly duo: Sir Bradley Wiggins (left) and Chris Froome finished first and second in last year’s famous race

looked capable of beating his leader, finishing second overall, but after the race Wiggins said he would repay his lieutenant in 2013. Last week, Wiggins fuelled the speculation again by saying that he was considering a Giro/Tour double. It prompted Froome to issue a personal statement in

which he said he was to lead Team Sky on the Tour, which starts on June 29 in Corsica. Froome has enjoyed a solid start to the season, winning the Tour of Oman, The Criterium International and the Tour de Romandie. Wiggins has been less dominant than last year, with Brailsford saying Team Sky

should be focusing on the Giro bid for now. “We’re in a fantastic position - we have two of the best GC (general classification) riders in the world and they are both great racers with a competitive will to win,” he said. “Since the start of season, Bradley’s performance plan

has focused around training specifically to try and win the Giro and then ride the Tour, whilst Chris’ has been focused on attempting to win the Tour. “Now we’re here - the Giro has started and Bradley has done a brilliant job of getting in the best possible condition for his assault on the race.”

MARCOS Baghdatis was beaten by wild card entrant Tommy Robredo 6-4, 6-2 in the opening round of the Mutua Madrid Open Masters on the Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario court yesterday afternoon. The experienced Spaniard needed an hour and twenty minutes to send the 27-year-old Cypriot packing and secure a second round clash with the 13th seeded German Tommy Haas, who beat Andreas Seppi of Italy in straight sets in his first round encounter. This is the second consecutive first round exit for World No.38 Baghdatis in Madrid after he was eliminated from the event early in 2012 by another Spaniard, Guillermo Garcia-Lopez. The Limassol native has never reached the third round in the Spanish capital as he has suffered second round losses on four different occasions. The Internazionali BNL d’Italia Masters in Rome should be the next stop on tour for Baghdatis where he was also eliminated in the first round in the last three season after reaching the third round in 2007.

Formula 1 teams to get extra tyres for practice

Badminton players to get two challenges per match

Britain’s Robson shocks Radwanska to progress

FORMULA One teams will be given extra tyres for Friday free practice from this week’s Spanish Grand Prix to encourage them to provide more action for the fans, supplier Pirelli said. Spectators watching the first practice session on Friday have had to endure long periods with no track action as drivers opt to save their quick-wearing tyres. Pirelli said the extra hard tyres would be a speciallycreated compound, made to last much longer and different from the regular orange-marked hards available for the rest of the weekend. They will carry no colour markings.

SHUTTLERS will be allowed two challenges when badminton uses technology to rule on contentious decisions for the first time at next month’s Indonesia Open, the governing body of the sport said. The system, featuring ultra-slow motion cameras, will allow players to review line calls and umpire overrules, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) said in a statement. Badminton has joined tennis, rugby and cricket in adopting a review system. A successful appeal will mean the player retains the challenge while two failed reviews will leave the shuttler without another for the remainder of the match, the BWF said.

LAURA Robson swept into the third round of the Mutua Madrid Open with a straight-sets victory over fourth seed Agnieszka Radwanska. The 19-year-old Briton matched the world number four in the opening stages of the match before she changed gears and demolished her Polish opponent’s serve to win convincingly, 6-3 6-1. It is one of the biggest wins of Robson’s career and she will now face either Ana Ivanovic or qualifier Chanelle Scheepers. “I’m really happy with how I played and I went on court with a clear game plan,” Robson told BBC Radio 5 live.

Scorching Alice Springs heat to test England

‘The coolest night of my life’

ENGLAND will be forced to battle high temperatures and extreme humidity when they travel to the Northern Territory between the first and second Tests with Australia later this year. The tourists were originally scheduled to play a Cricket Australia Chairman’s XI at Manuka Oval in Canberra on November 29 and 30 in between the opening two Tests in Brisbane and Adelaide. But the ground is being resurfaced at that time in an attempt to get up to standard for the 2015 World Cup, meaning the two-day tour match has been moved to Traeger Park in Alice Springs. Average temperatures in Alice Springs at that time of year hover around 35 degrees, meaning England’s players will be battling the elements when they take on the Chairman’s XI four days after the completion of the first Test. Cricket Australia defended the decision to move the game to one of the hottest parts of the country and are hoping many of England’s supporters will use the time to visit the area. “When we were informed that Canberra could not host this year’s Chairman’s XI fixture, we wanted to bring the match to an iconic part of Australia,” Cricket Australia’s Andrew Ingleton said.

By Mark Lamport-Stokes FRED Couples, renowned for being one of the most laidback figures in the game, was overcome by emotion after being inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame as part of the class of 2013 this week. The American former world number one, a 15-time champion on the PGA Tour, twice choked up with tears during his acceptance speech in St. Augustine, Florida on what he described as “the coolest night of my life”. Couples was inducted along with eight-time European Tour order of merit winner Colin Montgomerie, former U.S. Open champion and television broadcaster Ken Venturi, former European Tour executive director Ken Schofield and twice former British Open winner Willie Park Jr. The first American player to reach number one in the official world rankings, Couples broke down when he described how he had gained motivation to pursue a career in golf while attending a golf clinic in his native Seattle at the age of 14. “An unbelievable PGA Tour player was doing the clinic, and I got up front and I was staring at him,” the 53-yearold Couples recalled. “I wasn’t really the person who said, ‘That’s what I want to do, I’m going to be a PGA

American former world number one, Fred Couples (left) is a Masters champion and a 15-time winner on the PGA Tour. Colin Montgomerie has 31 wins on the European Tour and a superb record in the Ryder Cup Tour player.’ But I knew I wanted to really, really get involved in golf. “And the gentleman’s name was Lee Trevino, who has been a mentor and someone I love.” Couples’ golfing journey took him from Seattle to the University of Houston and he went on to become one of the most popular players in the game with a languid swing and prodigious length off the tee which earned him the nickname ‘Boom Boom’. He won his only major title at the 1992 Masters but also clinched the prestigious Players Championship in 1984 and 1996, an event widely regarded as the unofficial fifth major. A veteran of five Ryder

Cups, Couples captained the triumphant US Presidents Cup teams in 2009 and 2011, and also has eight wins on the Champions Tour for players aged over 50. “Thanks for taking a kid from Seattle and putting him into the Hall of Fame,” Couples said as he ended his acceptance speech. Montgomerie, though he never won a major championship despite several close calls, was delighted to earn his place in the class of 2013 after a career highlighted by 31 victories on the European Tour. “This has been a humbling experience for me,” said the 49-year-old Scot, who also compiled a stellar record in the biennial Ryder Cup team

competition where he never lost in eight singles matches. “I’m very proud to be standing here in front of you.” Known for his natural swing, an aversion to practice and a temperament that could be prickly at times, Montgomerie recorded five runner-up spots in the majors among a total of 10 top-10 finishes. “I’ve enjoyed thoroughly my exploits in major championships,” Montgomerie said during a news conference. “I just haven’t been fortunate or whatever it takes, I’ve never, ever stood up and made a winner’s speech... I never will. “There’s always a time where a bit of fortune comes your way, whether it be for you or against your oppo-

nent at the time, and it just so happens with five runnerups... that I just haven’t been so-called fortunate to walk through the door.” Montgomerie twice lost majors in playoffs - the US Open in 1994 and the PGA Championship in 1995 - but his most agonising near-miss came in the 2006 U.S. Open at Winged Foot where he double-bogeyed the final hole to finish a stroke behind winner Geoff Ogilvy of Australia. “So at the same time, if you’re talking about regrets of any part of my golfing career, I have none. Absolutely none. I’ve done exactly what I’ve tried to do. I’ve tried 100 per cent on every shot, and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t.”

Tireless Butler provides stellar service as Bulls stun Heat By Simon Evans

Jimmy Butler was the star as the Chicago Bulls stunned defending NBA champions Miami

A DEPLETED Chicago Bulls dug deep for another impressive display of character and collective strength as they stunned defending NBA champions Miami Heat 93-86 in the opening game of their Eastern Conference semifinal series. On the night when LeBron James was presented with his fourth Most Valuable Player award from league commissioner David Stern, it was instead the more modest but seemingly tireless talent of Chicago’s Jimmy Butler which proved decisive. Butler played all 48 minutes for the third straight game and scored 21 points, while grabbing 14 rebounds and three assists. On top of that, in the absence of the ailing Luol Deng, Butler guarded James, re-

stricting him to just two points in the first half, a postseason career low for the Miami forward. Although James stepped it up after the break, finishing with 24 points on 8-of-17 shooting, Butler inspired the Bulls to a fourth quarter rally as they roared back from a seven-point deficit to grab the early advantage in the best-of-seven series. “I like the mental toughness of this team,” said Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau, who was also unable to call on the services of injured Kirk Henrich and long-term absentee Derrick Rose. “When you are facing adversity, you have to be mentally tough. But this is just one game. We are going to have to play much better in the next one,” he added. Despite being the most dominant team in the NBA this season, the Heat suffered

from what their fans had feared after seven full days of rest - rustiness. Sweeping the Bucks earned the Heat that week off, while the Bulls were fighting past Brooklyn, and the unusually long break carried the danger of Miami losing their edge. The defeat ended the Heat’s franchise record-tying eight game post-season winning streak and was their second loss to Chicago at home this season. Nate Robinson top scored for the Bulls with 27 points and the former New York Knicks and Boston Celtics guard said there was a unique team spirit to the current Chicago team. “There is something special about this group. I don’t know what it is but it just feels like we have been playing together for ten years we just love to play for each other,” he said.

ICONIC “Alice Springs, set against the backdrop of the MacDonnell Ranges, is an iconic part of our great country and an ideal setting for the game.” Despite the change in conditions, the England and Wales Cricket Board does not believe the alteration will prove problematic. An ECB spokesman told Press Association Sport: “The change to the schedule was made with our full consultation and agreement. “It is a two-day game with only one day likely to be spent in the field and there will still be ample time for rest and recovery before the next Test match starts on December 5.” England tour schedule: October 31-November 2 Western Australia XI Perth November 6-9 Australia A Hobart November 13-16 New South Wales XI Sydney November 21-25 First Test Brisbane November 29-30 Chairman’s XI Alice Springs December 5-9 Second Test Adelaide December 13-17 Third Test Perth December 26-30 Fourth Test Melbourne January 3-7 Fifth Test Sydney

Real president appeals for unity at divided club

By Brian Homewood

Mourinho stirs up simmering divisions By Mark Elkington SNIPING comments between Jose Mourinho and members of the Real Madrid squad have caused president Florentino Perez to make a rare foray into the limelight to call for unity at the club during the season run-in. The nine-time European champions host Malaga in La Liga tonight, in a rearranged fixture due to their involvement in the May 17 King’s Cup final against Atletico Madrid. Second-placed Real must win to make leaders Barcelona wait to be crowned champions, as they trail Tito Vilanova’s side by 11 points with four games left. Anything less than a victory would gift Barca a fourth league crown in five years without having to play. Speculation over Mourinho’s future has gone into overdrive since Real were denied a place in the Champions League final by Borussia Dortmund last week, and the Portuguese has done little to quash it. Instead, Mourinho stirred up simmering divisions at the club last Friday by having a dig at popular club captain and goalkeeper Iker Casillas who he has dropped in favour of Diego Lopez recently. The Bernabeu cheered Casillas’ name when it was

read out among the substitutes at the stadium before their 4-3 league win over Real Valladolid on Saturday. Mourinho’s name was whistled by a large section of the crowd. Pepe, a player regarded as a Mourinho favourite, and Sergio Ramos have since made comments in support of Casillas in local media. “We have two big challenges in front of us with the Euroleague (basketball) Final Four and the King’s Cup final,” Perez told reporters this week. “We should be united for the fans, and give our all. Our players will do that.” Real’s league challenge is effectively over but they defend a 42-match unbeaten record in all competitions at the Bernabeu against a side suffering similar endof-season symptoms, Malaga. Since their Champions League quarter-final exit, also to Dortmund, Manuel Pellegrini’s side have steadily slipped out of contention for a top-four finish. The Costa del Sol club are sixth with 53 points and are beset by rumours over the future of coach Pellegrini and possibly even their Qatari owners. “We have to finish the year well so as not to spoil the season we have had,” Malaga’s Brazil forward Julio Baptista told reporters. “It would be a shame not

to get the points that would earn us a place in Europe. “Although it is tough, we must forget about what is happening off the pitch. There are lots of non-football related issues, but the most important are the football ones.” Third-placed Atletico visit relegation-threatened Celta Vigo this evening looking to make the last automatic qualification berth for the Champions League mathematically safe. Vilanova meanwhile could miss the title celebrations if Barcelona are crowned La Liga champions tonight as he will be in New York having a medical check up. Anything less than a Real victory tonight would hand Barca their fourth title in five years - Vilanova’s first in his debut season at the helm. “I am going to New York for some scheduled tests and I will be back on Thursday,” Vilanova told Barca’s weekend post-match news conference. Vilanova spent two months in New York earlier this year having radiotherapy and chemotherapy treatment for cancer and returned to the dugout in March. The 44-year-old had an operation to remove a tumour from his saliva glands in November 2011 and required a second round of surgery in December.

AIK match stops for emotional tribute to dead goalkeeper Turina By Phlip O’Connor

A picture of AIK goalkeeper Ivan Turina is placed next to flowers and candles at the club’s fitness centre in Stockholm

AIK and IFK Gothenburg stopped playing in the 27th minute of their Allsvenskan game on Monday in a remarkable and emotional tribute to AIK goalkeeper Ivan Turina who died on Thursday. As the clock ticked towards the 27th minute the ball was kicked out of play and when it began, both sets of players and the referee stood and applauded Turina whose squad number was 27. The Croatian goalkeeper, whose joined AIK from Dynamo Zagreb in 2010, was found dead in his Stockholm apartment. An autopsy has been carried out, but the results have yet to be made public. The players’ tribute was one of many on what was an

emotionally charged night for Swedish football. Fans began gathering early at the arena and many of them wore t-shirts depicting the goalkeeper. Roses covered the area behind the goal in front of the home fans, who sang the Croatian’s name at every opportunity, and banners and flags celebrating Turina and bearing his squad number fluttered in the breeze. As at all Swedish top-flight matches this weekend, a minute’s silence was observed before kickoff. AIK fell behind to a firsthalf penalty but came back to win 3-1 and secure their first victory since moving to the Friends Arena. The emotion of the occasion seemed to get to the players in the early stages, with Henok Goitom and Daniel Majstorovic missing

penalties in the same firsthalf minute for the home side, before the latter conceded a spot-kick which gave Gothenburg the lead. But a goal from Kennedy Igboananike levelled the scores and Costa Rican international Celso Borges gave AIK the lead when he squeezed a volley in at the near post early in the second half. Winger Martin Mutumba then fired a vicious swerving drive which secured AIK’s first home league victory since leaving the Rausnda stadium at the end of the 2012 season. AIK have also announced that they will face Dinamo Zagreb, Turina’s previous club, in a charity match in Stockholm on May 13 with the proceeds from the game going to their former keeper’s family.

FIFA has proposed the introduction of extra officials in stadiums to watch out for incidents of racism, plus a two-tier system of sanctions for teams whose followers indulge in discriminatory behaviour. The new officials “would identify potential acts of discrimination with the aim of easing the pressure on referees,” FIFA said in a statement. They would also help gather evidence for disciplinary committees. The inaugural meeting of FIFA’s anti-racism task force also proposed that first or minor offences be punished with lighter sanctions such as playing a match behind closed doors, a warning or a fine. Serious incidents and re-offenders would be hit with points deductions, expulsion from a competition or relegation. The proposals will be put to FIFA’s Congress in Mauritius at the end of the month. English referee Howard Webb, one of the panel members, said match officials could not always be aware of what was happening off the field. “We are very much in the front line, we are the first port of call for the players,” Webb told Reuters after the meeting. “If we become aware of anything from the players or officials which they deem to be racist or discriminatory, then we’ve got an obligation to respond and referees will do that. “You are not always aware of what’s happening in the stands. “Bear in mind that what we do as match officials is to shut the crowd out really, because we’re trying to concentrate on the game itself, we are trying to focus on our job and not get distracted. “Therefore....it’s not easy to know what’s happened.” Webb said the new role should be performed by someone “who has a good understanding of what constitutes a discriminatory act within the stadium, and can therefore guide the match official. “It could be someone like a venue co-ordinator, it could be someone in the stand, who could take the best position to get a feel for what’s going on. “It could be they have to move around the stadium to get a feel for what’s happened, but it would take some of the pressure off the match officials.” UEFA issued guidelines four years ago outlining a three-step procedure to be followed in case of racist incidents during matches, putting the onus heavily on referees. Those rules have not yet been invoked in European club competition and in March UEFA said it would “fully support” referees who enforced them.

Sport Valencia demands ‘Masochistic’ ten-man Sunderland fight back against Stoke ‘giants’ more of himself

Di Canio hails ‘crucial’ point By Rory Dollard

SUNDERLAND boss Paolo Di Canio believes his side’s hard-fought draw against Stoke could prove critical to the Barclays Premier League relegation battle. At half-time the chances of the Black Cats getting anything from the fixture looked remote, with Jonathan Walters’ ninthminute goal separating the sides and Craig Gardner having been dismissed for a nasty challenge on Charlie Adam. Playing with 10 men last week at Aston Villa, Sunderland were hammered 6-1 but Di Canio delivered on his promise that there would be no repeat performance. They put in a fine display after the break, bristling with energy and fully deserving the equaliser that arrived from the unlikely source of John O’Shea following a 63rd-minute corner. The result takes the club three points above Wigan in the drop zone and in front of both Newcastle and Norwich on goal difference. “It was a massive point for us. This point will be crucial at the end of the season, for sure,” said Di Canio. “With the way it came this point is vital. We deserved a point from this game, maybe we deserved even more.” But as well as that assessment, there was also a warning from Di Canio that his team cannot keep making life hard for themselves if their luck is to hold. Using a typically florid turn of phrase, the Italian added: “In some way we are a masochistic team. “After 10 minutes we gave an easy goal away even though we knew before kick-off that they had five

Sunderland manager Paolo Di Canio (second left) applauds the fans after the 1-1 draw at the Stadium of Light or six who are giants compared to our physical presence. “The first corner kick we conceded we give a goal away. Then you saw Craig’s bad challenge. “We have to be careful and to handle our aggression. We have to make sure we don’t repeat the same mistakes otherwise we are in real trouble. “I love Craig because he has heart, passion, dedication. He is an amazing professional but now we have to be careful because there

are two games to go and we do not have the time to recover from these mistakes. “He was down, very sad and at the end of the game he said sorry. I’d like to see my players walk inside the dressing room and not have to say sorry. “It’s another mistake and it can happen but we need to improve this.” Stoke would have confirmed their top-flight status for another year had they held on to their lead, but they are nevertheless highly unlikely to

be dragged back in to the scrap. In previous seasons their current tally would have already been enough to keep them up, but Pulis acknowledges this has been no ordinary season at the bottom. “The league is very surreal this year. If you look at the table we are 11th with two games to go and we’re still not mathematically safe,” he said. “I’ve been in the Premier League for five years with Stoke now and I’ve never

known it this tight. “But we are very pleased to have 41 points. I’m amazed it isn’t sorted out yet. It’s one of those funny seasons.” Pulis also had praise for the way the Black Cats went about their business having lost Gardner. “You’ve got to give Sunderland credit. They displayed a lot of spirit and a lot of togetherness,” he said. “The crowd and the team became as one and it made life very difficult for us.”

Carragher positive for Reds’ future By Carl Markham

Great servant: Jamie Carragher is retiring at the end of the season after more than 730 appearances for Liverpool

LIVERPOOL vice-captain Jamie Carragher retires in a couple of weeks and is confident he will leave the club where he has spent his entire career in a healthy position. There has been much debate about how manager Brendan Rodgers will replace an experienced centre-back with 735 appearances, with links to suitable options growing daily. But the player himself believes the side has matured over the course of the season - admittedly with him at the heart of defence for half of it - and will continue to do so after he has gone. Early on in Rodgers’ reign, with the new manager trying to introduce his ideas, teenagers like Andre Wisdom, Raheem Sterling and Suso were all featuring on a regular basis. But since January the Reds boss has settled on a more

experienced line-up which includes Carragher and results have improved as a consequence. “Looking at the season I think if you remember the start it was difficult with the transfer window situation,” said Carragher, referring to Andy Carroll’s loan to West Ham and a failed bid for Clint Dempsey, which left Liverpool with only one senior striker in Luis Suarez. “From the start we had a lot of young lads in there and it wasn’t easy. “The manager made a couple of signings (striker Daniel Sturridge and midfielder Philippe Coutinho) in January which gave us a boost so we’re showing positive signs but we have to take it into next season.” While most of the focus has been on Liverpool’s attacking strengths, the goalless draw in Sunday’s 220th Merseyside derby was Liverpool’s 15th clean sheet of the season three more than they man-

aged last year. “You want to score goals and keep clean sheets. Myself and Pepe (Jose Reina) have always enjoyed keeping clean sheets and breaking records,” Carragher added. “I think only Manchester City are ahead of us in clean sheets. “But it is about coming together as a team and winning games, whether you keep clean sheets or score lots of goals the main thing is getting three points. “We’ve kept a clean sheet but not scored. We’d have loved to have won 2-1 without keeping a clean sheet.” The season may be petering out for Liverpool but Carragher has no intention of taking it easy as the end of his playing career approaches. “I’ve got two games left for Liverpool and I’ll give it 100 per cent whether we’re at the top or the bottom of the league,” he said. “I am going to thoroughly enjoy the last two games.”

ANTONIO Valencia admits his performances for Manchester United this season have been a letdown. The Ecuador wide man was crowned both players’ and fans’ player of the year at United last term after an outstanding contribution to a season when they fell short of Barclays Premier League title glory by the narrowest of margins. This season, despite Sunday’s 1-0 home defeat by Chelsea that ends United’s hopes of beating their own best points return in the Premier League era, Valencia will be able to return to South America for his summer break with a medal in his luggage. But he is not entirely satisfied with his own contribution. “If you make a comparison with the previous season it wasn’t quite what I was hoping for,” Valencia told MUTV. “I have maybe not been able to recreate the form of last year. But I have not been at the same fitness level. “When you have suffered from a couple of injuries, sometimes it is hard to get back to those fitness levels where you can play full of confidence and show your ability in its best light. “Sometimes it takes a while to get the rhythm of how you normally play if recovery from injury takes longer than you think. “Looking back I am still reasonably happy with my contribution, I managed to feature in 28 Premier League games, but hopefully pre-season will be a chance to get fit.” The 27-year-old neglects to point out he has also become an emergency rightback in a way neither Nani nor Ashley Young could on the other side due to his greater defensive discipline. Yet Valencia accepts he is his own harshest critic. “When things are not going particularly well and I am not on my best form I tend to be a little harder on myself,” he said. “All the time, you want everything to turn our perfectly. At those times, you do think about your form.” With his contract due to expire in two years’ time next season is going to be a big one for Valencia, when improvement will be demanded if he is going to secure his future at Old Trafford. Two Premier Leagues in four seasons is not a bad return for a player who cost United £16million when he signed from Wigan.

Genius: Ronnie O’Sullivan celebrates clinching his fifth world snooker championship while beaten opponent Barry Hawkins looks on

‘Rocket Ronnie’ undecided over world title defence By John Skilbeck RONNIE O’Sullivan landed his fifth Betfair World Championship title on Monday night and hinted he could backtrack on retirement plans. Neither the triumph over Barry Hawkins nor the O’Sullivan change of heart came as a surprise, and now O’Sullivan can begin to recharge his drained batteries for a tilt at next season’s big events. After going into self-imposed exile from snooker for almost a year, ‘The Rocket’ rolled up in Sheffield without any competitive match practice and proceeded to tear through the draw, culminating in an 18-12 triumph against surprise finalist Hawkins. Hawkins, the 34-year-old world number 14 from Kent, emerged from their tussle with huge credit. It was comfortably the biggest match of his life and he met the challenge head on. His reward was £125,000, more than treble the size of his previous highest pay cheque, and the respect of his opponent and the watching millions. But O’Sullivan magisterially took the title, becoming the first man to successfully defend the world title since Stephen Hendry in 1996. Pressed on whether he would return next year, having during this event pledged to quit before next season’s Crucible tournament, O’Sullivan said: “I can’t say that I am, because I had my year out and enjoyed my year out. “I intend to play in some small events. Come December or January I’ll have a better idea of what I’m going to do. “Now I’ve got to enjoy one of the most amazing things I’ve ever done, retaining the World Championship title.

“I’m well equipped to win more titles but it’s not easy. “There were times in this tournament when parts of my game weren’t great. “But I managed to play my way through the tournament and get stronger. “I was able to manage my emotions and my mind better than I ever have done and that got me through.” He prevailed in record-breaking style, with his six centuries one more than any player has managed before in a World Championship final. His career total of three-figure Crucible breaks now stands at 131 - four ahead of former front-runner and seven-time champion Hendry’s haul. “You have to face your demons during this tournament and that’s why it’s such a hard tournament to win,” O’Sullivan said. “In the final I had everything to lose and nothing to gain. “People said it would be a procession, but everyone on the snooker circuit knows what a good player Barry is.” O’Sullivan earns a wild card to January’s Masters event, and may only be seen fleetingly in action before then. The UK Championship in December could be his first major tournament of the season. Hawkins made two centuries in the match, so to lose was hard to swallow. Hawkins said: “I’m a bit gutted straight after the defeat but if someone told me I’d get to the final I’d have ripped their arm off. “Once you get there you want to win the title but you can’t come up against anyone tougher than that. There’s no shame in losing to him 18-12. “I just missed a couple of balls here and there. He responded with big break after big break and that’s why he’s won five world titles.”

OTTENHAM will not sell Gareth Bale under any circumstances this summer, even if they fail to qualify for the Champions League. According to London’s Evening Standard newspaper, the White Hart Lane hierarchy’s determination to keep Bale is similar to the strong stance they took over Luka Modric two years ago when Chelsea failed with three massive bids. Speculation that Spurs will cash in on a huge offer has continued despite coach Andre Villas-Boas’s assertion last week that the Wales international is staying at the north London club. A host of top clubs across Europe, including Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United, are all expected to make bids in excess of £40 million for a player who has scored an incredible 25 goals in 41 appearances this term. Despite Bale’s efforts, however, Tottenham are in serious danger of missing out on a place in next season’s Champions League. They go into their match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge tonight trailing their rivals by three points and with a vastly inferior goal difference. Defeat will ensure they won’t be able to catch Chelsea and will remain two points behind fourth-placed Arsenal with only two games remaining. And Europe’s biggest clubs hope to capitalise on the situation by luring the 23-yearold, who has won the PFA Player of the Year, PFA Young Player of the Year and Football Writers’ Player of the Year this season, away from Spurs. But even though the club can make a huge profit on a player they signed from Southampton for just £5m in 2007, the view from the very top, which is believed to include billionaire owner Joe Lewis, is not to listen to any offers. Bale is seen as vital to the club’s progress and he is expected to sign a new fouryear contract worth £130,000a-week, as first revealed by Standard Sport in March. It is hoped that will convince him to stay for at least 12 more months although, like the Modric situation, there is a feeling among some sources

Different class: Gareth Bale’s 20 League goals have taken Spurs to the brink of a Champions League place at the club that it could prove to be only a temporary solution. Modric was told in no uncertain terms by chairman Daniel Levy in a meeting that he was staying at Tottenham in 2011. It led to some problems at the start of that campaign as the Croatia international refused to train at times and made himself unavailable for a game against Manchester United. Just a year later, he was sold to Real Madrid for £33m, although the club privately still claimed a victory as he had moved abroad rather than ending up at Premier League rivals Chelsea or United. There are no fears that Bale will resort to the same methods Modric used to try to force a transfer two years ago and, significantly, has a very strong relationship with Villas-Boas and his team-mates. Speaking last week about Bale, the Spurs manager said: “The player is here to remain. The club have to move for-

ward by holding on to their best players.” Chelsea meanwhile are hopeful Belgium winger Eden Hazard can shrug off a calf problem in time for tonight’s crucial showdown at Stamford Bridge. “If we can win we will be there but Tottenham are a good team,” Chelsea boss Rafa Benitez said. “Winning is crucial for us and it’s even more important for them so there will be a great atmosphere. “We will try to win because we know it will guarantee a top-four finish. I don’t see more or less pressure for either team, I know we just need to win.”
