Seeking nine ‘most wanted’ in Cyprus Crimestoppers to launch Operation Zygos with UK and Cypriot authorities

A

‘MOST wanted’ list of nine UK criminals suspected of offences including rape and drug dealing who are thought to be hiding in Cyprus is due to be launched today. Crimestoppers has compiled the list working with officers from the UK’s Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca) and Cypriot authorities. Crimestoppers is an independent charity helping to find criminals and help solve crimes in the UK since 1988. They have an anonymous 24/7 phone number where people can call to pass on information; alternatively they can send information anonymously through the website. One of the men on the newly-drawn-up Cyprus list is Martin Evans, 50, from Swansea, who is wanted for drug dealing, theft and fraudulent trading. He ran a drug-dealing gang between 1999 and 2001, smuggling the drugs into Britain and laundering the proceeds by converting cash into foreign currencies and moving it to the Netherlands, where it was used to buy more drugs. Evans is also wanted for stealing thousands of pounds of investments made to a company he ran called Ostrich Centre Limited in 1995. He fled after being released from prison on licence in 2011. He has used the aliases Martin Roydon Evans, Martin Royden Evans, Martin Wayne Evans, Anthony Hall and Paul Kelly. He has “ME” tattooed on his right arm. Evans is 5ft 11ins to 6ft tall, stocky, has short brown hair

that is going grey, and blue eyes. Details of the remaining eight suspects are due to be announced today. In the UK, Crimestoppers founder Lord Ashcroft said: “My hope is that we shall see more success in bringing some of the UK’s most wanted fugitives to justice. “While these suspected criminals will see Cyprus as a safe place to evade law enforcement, my belief is that with the help of the local public and expatriate community these individuals will not be able to escape justice for much longer.” The scheme, called Operation Zygos, targets criminals who could be in the Republic or the breakaway Turkish-controlled north. Anyone with information is encouraged to come forward regardless of which part of the island the suspect is in. Soca deputy director Martin Molloy said: “Fugitives hiding overseas typically remain part of the criminal world, continuing to bring harm to communities locally and beyond. “Soca and our partners are determined to ensure life on the run is intolerable for them and that they are returned to face justice in the UK.” People with information calling from Cyprus can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 8000 55 11, or via www.crimestoppers. org.cy. Those calling from the UK can use 0800 555 111 or www.crimestoppers-uk. org. Crimestoppers has run a similar scheme in Spain, where Operation Captura, launched in October 2006, led to 49 out of 65 suspects being arrested. (PA)

Organic food no more nutritious than non-organic ORGANIC produce and meat typically isn’t any better for you than conventional food when it comes to vitamin and nutrient content, although it does generally reduce exposure to pesticides and antibiotic-resistant bacteria, according to a US study. “People choose to buy organic foods for many different reasons. One of them is perceived health benefits,” said Crystal Smith-Spangler, who led a team of researchers from Stanford University and the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care. “Our patients, our families ask, ‘Well, are there health reasons to choose organic food in terms of nutritional content or human health outcomes?’” She and her colleagues reviewed more than 200 studies that compared either the health of people who ate organic or

conventional foods or, more commonly, nutrient and contaminant levels in the foods themselves. The foods included organic and nonorganic fruits, vegetables, grains, meat, poultry eggs and milk. According to US Department of Agriculture standards, organic farms have to avoid the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, hormones and antibiotics. Organic livestock must also have access to pastures during grazing season. Many of the studies used, though, didn’t specify their standards for what constituted “organic” food, which can cost as much as twice what conventional food costs, the researchers wrote in the Annals of Internal Medicine. Smith-Spangler and her colleagues found there was no difference in the amount of vitamins in plant or animal

products produced organically and conventionally - and the only nutrient difference was slightly more phosphorous in the organic products. Organic milk and chicken may also contain more omega-3 fatty acids, but that was based on only a few studies. More than one third of conventional produce had detectable pesticide residues, compared with seven per cent of organic produce samples. Organic pork and chicken were 33 per cent less likely to carry bacteria resistant to three or more antibiotics than conventionally produced meat. Smith-Spangler said it was uncommon for either organic or conventional foods to exceed the allowable limits for pesticides, so it was not clear whether a difference in residues would have an effect on health.

THE TWO suspects in the June murder of five people in Ayia Napa will stand trial next month the Famagusta District Court ruled yesterday. The Greek nationals, Demetris Mamalikopoulos, 29, and Anastasios Tsehilides, 41, will remain in custody until the first court hearing on October 17. The two are suspected of gunning down five men – three Greek Cypriots and two Romanians - on June 23 on a side street in the heart of Ayia Napa’s nightclub scene, near the popular Red Square bar. Four of the victims worked for

Famagusta businessman Phanos Kalopsidiotis. The state prosecutor yesterday said police wanted the suspects to remain in custody in case they fled the country before the trial date. Last week, the court was told police were on the lookout for four other men in connection with the case – two Greek nationals who allegedly met with Mamalikopoulos and Tsehilides in Ayia Napa prior to the shootings – and another two unidentified men who police believe to be accomplices through checking the suspects’ phone data.

The wanted men have not yet been located, while police are still in the dark over who the mastermind was. They also have no murder weapon – or any indication on who supplied it. A Glock handgun found in an open space at the Famagusta village of Xylotymbou, which fits the type of weapon used in the shootings, has been ruled out as the murder weapon, after police received the results of ballistic tests. The two suspects arrived at yesterday’s hearing under a heavy police escort, handcuffed and wearing bullet proof vests.

Photo shows the area where the petrol stations are located on a busy road

(Christos Theodorides)

One station was closed immediately and checked. The second says it’s a conspiracy because of its low prices By Jacqueline Agathocleous LARNACA Mayor Andreas Louroudjiadis yesterday couldn’t say for sure whether residents in the Drosia part of the town were at risk, after a fuel leak was spotted during road works last Thursday. Even though Louroudjiadis was quick to reassure residents in the area – a 10minute walk from the town centre – he still admitted he couldn’t be sure of the exact dangers posed to public health and safety. No efforts were made to warn nearby residents of the possible dangers “so as not to spread panic” and the matter only came to light after it was reported by Phileleftheros newspaper. Asked what safety measures were taken to protect residents, Louroudjiadis first claimed “there is no immediate danger”. He said the labour inspection department interrupted the works immediately,

while the fire services inspected the area and gave saftey instructions. The leak was spotted during works on the town’s sewerage system, just metres from two petrol stations. One of the stations halted operations immediately and investigated the matter – with no problems showing up – but the owner of the other one was not so helpful, said Louroudjiadis.

CONSPIRACY After threatening to secure an order to close the station down, the owner – who claimed the whole affair was a conspiracy against him because he had the lowest petrol prices - eventually co-operated, the mayor said last night. The affected area has been covered with sand. Asked if there was danger of an explosion in the inhabited area, Louroudjiadis said, “You are asking

me to reply to something I am no expert in and I cannot reach any conclusions until we find out exactly what type of leak it is”. But he added, “What we cannot accept is delays.” When a reporter said there was great danger of an explosion, Louroudjiadis admitted that “I cannot give a positive or a negative answer, but in its nature, fuel is a dangerous and flammable material”. Last night, Louroudjiadis told the Cyprus Mail his municipality decided against warning surrounding residents of the leak – and the catastrophic consequences of a possible fire - “so as not to spread panic”. But he said the municipality was monitoring the matter constantly. “The problem with the leak emerged on Thursday afternoon during works on the second phase of the town’s sewerage system,” said Louroudjiatis. “The leak is at a depth of three metres and there aren’t

large quantities of fuel, though we are not certain either of the flow or the exact quantities.” He added, “From the moment the leak was spotted or even suspected, Larnaca Municipality took all the necessary measures to ensure the area was safe. On Friday the area in question was covered with sand.” Meanwhile, the owner of the petrol station accused the mayor of stalling in taking action. Theodoros Stavrou, yesterday doubted there was even a leak. “I personally believe there isn’t even a leak, people shouldn’t be worried. I have vast experience in these matters; I have been working in the sector since 1992,” said Stavrou. Asked why he thought the whole thing was an attempt to harm him, Stavrou said it was “because I have the cheapest prices in Cyprus; the various petrol station owners are putting on the pressure so they can keep their prices high”.

Shortage of milk will continue for a month Supermarkets say they only receive one delivery a day By Natalie Hami A RECENT warning by cattle farmers has become reality with supermarkets suffering severe milk shortages after the competition watchdog ordered them to supply Pittas Dairies with 65 tonnes of milk a day. According to the Pancyprian Cattle Farmers’ Organisation (POA) the shortages will continue until October. “We have problems especially in the afternoon as they only deliver milk in the mornings,” said a supervisor at Metro supermarket in Lakatamia. Previously there were two deliveries a day. She said the problem has been ongoing for around two weeks. At the beginning of August the Commission for the Protection of Competition (CPC) ordered POA to supply Pittas Dairies with 65 tonnes of cow milk per day. The order was issued after Pittas filed a complaint against the cattle farmers, who produce around 90 per cent of the milk on the island. However, the quota imposed on them for supplying Pittas meant they had to reduce supplies to other dairy companies, they claim. Other big supermarkets around the island have also experienced shortages. Man-

Holy Synod decides to cut salaries of clergy By George Psyllides THE Church yesterday announced 25 per cent cuts in the salaries of its top clergy and a 15 per cent reduction in the income of lay personnel in a bid to tackle the economic crisis, which has taken a bite off the organisation’s revenues. The Holy Synod decided yesterday that its members, including the archbishop, would have 25 per cent shaved off their monthly income and would not be receiving a 13th salary at the end of the year.

‘People are looking for milk but having a hard time finding it’ ager of E&S Superstores in Limassol, Costas Constantinou said: “We’ve been getting a lot less milk over the past two weeks….less than half”. He said some smaller shops were not getting any. Constantinou said deliveries were only being made once a day and that was “at a push.” “We’re under a lot of pressure...,” he said, adding that people were looking for milk and could not find it elsewhere. Andreas Avraamides, a floor manager at Alfa Mega supermarket in Engomi said that milk shortages were especially bad last week, but the situation was better this week, he said. The supermarket was forced to put up a sign on Monday informing customers that milk had run out but they could buy long-

life milk instead. “It was bad…there was even one day when we didn’t have any milk,” said Avraamides, However, POA chairman Savvas Evangelou said yesterday the shortages would continue for another 53 days. “It’s due to the weather. As soon as it’s cooler the cows will be able to produce more milk, they can’t eat right now in the heat so they can’t make milk properly,” said Evangelou. The stresses associated with hot and humid environments have huge adverse effects on a dairy cow’s metabolisms by increasing her body maintenance requirements. Older, heavier, highproducing cows are more susceptible. Evangelou said it was up-

setting that supermarkets were encouraging people to buy long-life milk. “We drink the best milk in Europe and we have the best checks and they’re trying to destroy this,” he said.

Lay personnel earning over €1,500 would see their salary reduced by 15 per cent while hiring has been frozen. The Holy Synod also decided on cuts to the income of rank and file clergy to come into force on January 1, 2013. The scale would be announced later, the Holy Synod said. Paphos Metropolitan Georgios said clergy receiving under €1,500 a month would not be affected but some new restrictions regarding age

have been raised. “Instructions were given to have a new study for ages over 70 to 80-yearsold etc,” Georgios said. “That is why they will be announced later.” Georgios said there was an exchange of views – some called for higher cuts, some less, but the decision was unanimous. Back in August, Archbishop Chrysostomos said the Church had lost 60 per cent of its revenues from investments in banks and hotels. Bishoprics and churches had also invested in the banking sector, which suffered heavy losses due to the write-down of Greek debt in 2011, the archbishop said. He added that the Church has also incurred losses from its hotel investments, despite the rise in tourism in the past two years. “We have given discounts in the past three years,” Chrysostomos said, and hotels also needed maintenance, which cost millions. The Archbishopric and the Kykkos Monastery were the ones facing the biggest problems as they have the most staff, he said.

Home New hospital charges will aid with coming EU directive

Decision taken for gas-run vehicles

By Poly Pantelides

The cabinet has decided to open a new chapter in motoring, says Sylikiotis By Stefanos Evripidou THE GOVERNMENT has decided to introduce the use of liqueďŹ ed gas in road transport, hailing it as a more “environmentallyfriendlyâ€? and “cheaperâ€? option. Commerce Minister Neoclis Sylikiotis yesterday announced that the cabinet decided in its Monday session to introduce the use of liqueďŹ ed petroleum gas (LPG) in vehicles in Cyprus. “The cabinet has decided to open a new chapter in motoring, with the introduction of the use of liqueďŹ ed gas in road transport,â€? he said. The issue has been muchdebated over the years, and numerous studies undertaken, but now, through this decision, the government is kick-starting a procedure which will prepare Cyprus’ motorists for the use of liqueďŹ ed gas in their vehicles. “At a time when we seek

environmental protection, we could not sit back and do nothing,â€? said Sylikiotis. The minister listed the purported advantages: “First, it is cheaper, based on our studies, by 50 per cent compared to conventional fuels. Second, it’s safer than petrol-run vehicles. And thirdly, it is a cleaner form of fuel.â€? The minister argued that studies show replacing petrol and diesel with LPG and natural gas in road transport reduces the emission of greenhouse gases and other air pollutants, particularly carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides and particulates. “Already, many EU countries have promoted the use of liqueďŹ ed gas and natural gas in road transport. Germany already has 6,000 LPG stations and 14,000 stations that operate with mixed use, while other countries using liqueďŹ ed gas in cars are Italy, Belgium, Denmark, Ireland and Spain,â€? said Sylikiotis.

Minister says the use of LPG would be more environmentally friendly and cheaper Apart from the economic and environmental beneďŹ ts, the new decision will help to educate and familiarise Cypriots with the use of liqueďŹ ed gas in transport. Cyprus was in a good position to have “a good energy mixâ€?, using both renewable energy sources and natural gas. “It should be noted that today, 49 per cent of imported fuels are used for transport. You understand, then, how important this decision is,â€? he said. According to the minister, a study carried out by the Energy Service on the use of LPG in transport found the response from fuel companies, car importers and the public to be positive. A ďŹ nance ministry study showed that lost revenue of the state from taxes on petrol as a result of its partial replacement by gas would be negligible. “We are talking about 0.06 per cent and 0.6 per cent for the years 2014 and 2020 respectively,â€? said Syliki-

otis. Use of liqueďŹ ed gas was allowed in Cyprus in the past up until 1977, when for some reason, cabinet decided to prohibit its use. Despite that, some new cars imported to Cyprus still have dual propulsion engines, that is, they can use both petrol and gas. The commerce minister has been appointed coordinator of the government’s effort to prepare the necessary legal framework and infrastructure by the relevant ministries of labour, communications, commerce and ďŹ nance, with the help of the legal service. A comprehensive programme has been outlined for each government service and department. “The aim is to complete all the necessary work within 12 months,â€? said Sylikiotis. Meanwhile, the minister also met with Israeli energy company Delek yesterday at the Commerce Ministry to discuss Delek’s request to acquire a 30 per cent

The Delek delegation updated the minister on energy developments in the wider region, said Sylikiotis, noting that Delek and Noble are the main shareholders in Israeli deposits of natural gas. The delegation informed him that they already have platforms ready to extract natural gas in Israel from April 2013. He described this as a positive development “which is linked to our request for the import of natural gas from Israel, and also has to do with the broader synergies and collaboration that we want to build with Israel. Noble and Delek have been promoting a venture to set up a liquefaction plant here for exporting the gas from Israel’s ‘Leviathan’ prospect and from Cyprus’s Block 12.

THE HEALTH ministry’s proposed changes in hospital charges will help the system respond to a forthcoming EU directive on cross-border health care aiming to help patients receive treatment across the bloc, a health ministry ofďŹ cial has said. The ministry has submitted a bill to the House introducing among other things, a 30 per cent increase in hospital charges, which have not changed since 2005. Charges needed to go up in order to absorb some of the rising costs in light also of upcoming cross-border health care changes, health ofďŹ cial Soteris Stratis said. With the EU cross-border directive, which must be implemented by October next year - EU citizens will be entitled to treatment across borders, and reimbursement in their home country, under certain conditions. Raising hospital fees will help make treatment “more representative of the costs,â€? Stratis said adding that Cyprus will be able to recover more of the costs. Under the cross-border directive, patients will be able to get healthcare elsewhere in the EU that is equivalent to the health care they are entitled at home, whether free or paid. Patients will need to pay for the treatment upfront, get a receipt and request reimbursement back home, if entitled. Cyprus authorities will pay back what the equivalent treatment costs at home, so if treatment costs more, the patient will have to absorb the difference. EU travellers can already receive emergency or immediately necessary treatment in the rest of the EU by getting a European health insurance card, but cannot use the card to receive medical care otherwise. The health ministry’s proposed changes in health care charges equally impacts EU nationals who are permanent residents. Changes include simplifying the categories of beneďŹ ciaries on a sliding income scale and introducing a â‚Ź10 fee for an A&E visit and â‚Ź0.50 charges for lab tests and prescriptions.

‘Cyprus must learn to live within its means’ Finance Minister says he’s unaware of status of Russian loan request but said in any case things must change By George Psyllides IN the next few years Cyprus must learn to live within its means, the finance minister said yesterday, as officials did not confirm a front-page report that Russia has agreed to lend the cash-strapped island the €5.0 billion it had requested. Daily Politis said yesterday that Moscow had decided to grant Cyprus the loan it had requested but officials in Nicosia and Moscow could not confirm the report. “I am not aware of any developments with regards to the loan application from the Russian Federation,” Finance Minister Vassos Shiarly told Reuters. Government spokesman Stefanos Stefanou said Cyprus has not yet received a reply, while in Moscow a finance ministry spokesman said negotiations continued.

“The loan has not been approved yet,” the spokesman said, without saying what stage the negotiations were at. Cyprus sought a financial lifeline from international lenders in June to buffer its two largest banks, which were hammered by their exposure to Greek debt earlier in the year. Although it is in talks with the lenders from the European Union, the IMF and the European Central Bank – the troika –, Cyprus had also previously applied to Moscow, a close business and political ally, for aid. The government said it is currently engaged in talks with troika regarding the conditions of the bailout, but it is not yet clear when a deal would be signed. News portal Sigmalive reported that for starters, the troika has asked for €1.1 billion in spending cuts for three years but Cyprus is asking for the cuts to be rolled out inside a five-year period. Shiarly confirmed that

the troika has put proposals on the table. He did not get into the details. “The troika team has submitted its positions but they are not absolute,” the minister said, adding that the lenders have asked for Cyprus’ positions. However, Shiarly made it clear that things would have to change. “In the following years we must learn to live within our means and not spend more than we make,” he told state radio. He said talks with the troika include spending cuts and raising revenues to achieve a balanced budget. But the troika give Cyprus up to three years to adjust to this new regime, he said. The opposition however, accused the government of leaving everyone in the dark concerning the negotiations. DISY deputy chairman Averof Neophytou said the government had the proposals since July 25 but parties and the general public have no clue. DIKO vice

chairman Nicolas Papadopoulos accused the government of stalling in the hope of getting the Russian loan “so they won’t have to sign the memorandum (bailout agreement).” Papadopoulos said people have to know what the government positions are – to know if the negotiation is successful. “It is obvious, they are waiting for the Russian loan as if it is manna from heaven,” Papadopoulos said. “Won’t it be added to the public debt?” Government spokesman Stefanou challenged anyone who did not want Cyprus securing the loan to say so in public and not just raise vague issues and spread rumours just to create a negative predisposition. “This goes against the effort to secure a Russian loan with favourable conditions that let us make the negotiation with the Troika less difficult,” Stefanou said.

Home Christofias meets European Court of Justice delegation GREEK CYPRIOTS depend on the European Court of Justice to ensure the country’s sovereignty in peace talks for the island’s reunification, said President Demetris Christofias yesterday. He made the comment during a meeting with a delegation of the EU Court of Justice, headed by Court President Vassillios Skouris, at the Presidential Palace. Christofias said during peace talks, Greek Cypriots depend a lot on the Court’s case law, satisfied that both the EU Court and European Commission are of the legal opinion that the state should be one, with single sovereignty, citizenship and international personality. Christofias and the delegation also discussed the issue of permanent derogations from EU law in the case of a Cyprus solution, reportedly agreeing that these were not possible. The president argued the Turkish Cypriots were frustrated by Turkey’s “classic policy of colonisation” where it changes the demographic character of the Turkish Cypriot community and Cyprus. “I know very well that the Turkish Cypriots fear they will lose their Cypriot identity,” he said. The Court’s role is to enforce the European Treaties and act as umpire between member states, institutions and individuals in disputes over EU law. A judge from every member state is nominated to the bench of the EU Court, which has supremacy over national supreme courts on matters relating to EU laws. Its rulings are binding on member states and citizens and have a direct effect on EU countries.

Vergas: I won’t take back what I said about minister By Jacqueline Agathocleous PAPHOS Mayor Savvas Vergas yesterday said he would not go back on his criticism of the foreign minister for changing plans to host EU meetings in his district. The EU Foreign Ministers meeting is scheduled to be held on Friday and Saturday in Paphos, said Vergas. He said this had prompted municipal authorities to organise the annual Paphos Aphrodite Festival around the prestigious meeting. However he said Foreign Minister Erato KozakouMarcoullis had altered the plans at the last minute and would be taking her

Paphos mayor says he has every right to criticise change of venue for EU meeting EU guests to Limassol instead. Marcoullis said she was “saddened” and “deeply disappointed” with what she called Vergas’ “attack” on her and her ministry. She claimed she informed Vergas twice that the EU meeting would not be held in Paphos, adding that the mayor accepted the reasons given. Marcoullis called on Vergas to “restore the truth”. “I am not retracting anything because I am completely in the right,” Vergas told the Cyprus Mail last

night. Asked if he implied Marcoullis was lying, the mayor said: “I am not saying that, the minister can say what she wants. But I will say this, the ministers were supposed to be in Paphos for their meeting - I have the minutes of the meeting where the decision was made in 2010.” He said a lot of changes and upgrades had been made especially for the occasion. “The minister changed the plans a few days ago, giving us no room to react.

She said the journey to Paphos would be too tiring for the ministers,” said Vergas. “The minister’s decision is fully respected; but in the same way, it is completely acceptable for us to exercise criticism.” Marcoullis said on Monday Vergas seemed to have forgotten that they met twice and talked a number of times over the phone, where she explained to him ‘and he accepted’ that the EU foreign ministers would only be in Cyprus a short time and would have

a heavy schedule, which would only allow for a twohour dinner and show. “With this in mind, it was not possible for the foreign ministers to visit Paphos for the Opera opening,” said the minister. She also said the entertainment programme for the foreign ministers’ spouses would take place entirely in Paphos with visits to the major sites and lunch with the mayor at the harbour. “I hope the mayor restores the truth, otherwise, if this distortion of the truth continues – on my part at least – I will have many reservations over any future collaboration with the mayor of Paphos.”

OPPOSITION parties DISY, DIKO and EDEK yesterday called for the political decision to supply mixed villages Pyla and Pergamos with free electricity to be reviewed. After a House Commerce Committee meeting, Chairman Lefteris Christoforou said since the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) started providing free power to Turkish Cypriots in Pyla and Pergamos in 1964, the average household has contributed around €2,000. He proposed the €267 million spent so far on supplying Pyla and Pergamos were offset with cuts in the benefits Turkish Cypriots were receiving from the state. “We will no longer tolerate the excessive privileges offered to Turkish Cypriots,” said Christoforou. Using data submitted by the EAC, DIKO’s Angelos Votsis said that the Republic supplied €5 million’s worth of power to the two villages from 1964 until 1973, another €248 million from 1974 until 1994, and €15 million from 1995 until 2001. It currently spends around €1 million a year. The EAC said the Pyla population had increased over the years, raising the expense. AKEL’s Costas Costa said the fact that neither UNFICYP nor the Cypriot police could provide protection to EAC workers so they could cut off Pyla’s electricity supply, created concerns. He added that the “socalled electricity authority of the occupied areas is lying in wait to enter Pyla,” and said “we should be careful in any move we make”. Pyla is a mixed village in the Larnaca district within the United Nations’ buffer zone and holds special significance in Cyprus because it has been continuously inhabited by both Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots – before and after the Turkish invasion in 1974.

Osborne keeps post in reshuffle By Matt Falloon and Tim Castle BRITISH Prime Minister David Cameron kept unpopular finance minister George Osborne in place yesterday in a reshuffle he hopes will revive the Conservative-led government’s fortunes halfway through a term dominated by recession and austerity. Cameron’s office billed his first cabinet rejig as a game changer for a government finding it increasingly difficult to heal the economy, but heavyweights such as Foreign Secretary William Hague stayed put and few changes are expected in policy. The prime minister’s scope for a sweeping overhaul is limited by the constraints of life in coalition with the left-leaning Liberal Democrats and the danger of creating enemies among his own Conservatives at a delicate time. “In some respects the right of the party has been strengthened but it’s difficult to see it fundamentally changing the course of the government or its reputation,” said Wyn Grant, a professor of politics at the University of Warwick. “What it might do is to

Hague remains as FM, all Lib Dems stay in cabinet roles

In and out (from left): George Osborne, Jeremy Hunt, Justine Greening and Ken Clarke help unify the Conservatives in parliament. The crucial area is economic policy and the continued recession - if that turns around that will benefit the government’s popularity more than a reshuffle.” Osborne, a close Cameron ally, was booed by crowds before he presented medals to Paralympics winners on Monday night, highlighting discontent with budget cuts that have repeatedly missed the government’s targets, and the general

economic gloom. Polls show many Britons think Osborne should be sacked. But replacing too many senior ministers could be interpreted as an admission of policy failure, particularly on the economy. Shifting Osborne from his post would also raise questions on financial markets about Cameron’s resolve in tackling Britain’s large budget deficit. Cameron, who has seen his party’s popularity fall as the economy sours, has

stuck to his guns with austerity, hoping growth will return before the next election in 2015. The dire state of the economy forced the prime minister to at least tinker with his economic team, however, moving 72-year-old Justice Secretary Ken Clarke - a former finance minister - to a floating role with an economics brief. Lib Dem David Laws, another respected economic brain, was brought in to a ministerial job, given a jun-

ior portfolio at the education ministry and a roving economics brief. That was the only significant change for the Lib Dems, with business minister Vince Cable and Osborne’s number two Danny Alexander among those keeping their senior cabinet positions. The reshuffle is being seen more as an exercise in improving Cameron’s relationship with his own party, which is starting to fear for its chances of re-election.

“The end of the coalition would have been the ideal reshuffle but, compared to where I thought we would be today, we are in a very much stronger position - you can see the Conservative-ness of this government,” said Conservative lawmaker Peter Bone. “We’ve seen a tilting towards a more Conservative cabinet.” The biggest promotion came for former Culture Secretary Jeremy Hunt, who took over what he called the “huge task” of selling controversial plans for reforms at the health ministry to a sceptical public and medical profession. Hunt survived calls to quit this year for his handling of Rupert Murdoch’s attempt to take over British broadcaster BSkyB. Cameron switched Justine Greening from transport to international development, removing her from the debate over whether the government should build a third runway at London’s Heathrow airport, bitterly opposed by residents in her nearby parliamentary constituency. The move reignited speculation that a third runway - which the coalition has pledged to reject - could be on the cards.

World Suicide bomber kills 25 at Afghan funeral

Ex-minister to stand trial

By Rafiq Sherzad A SUICIDE bomber killed at least 25 people and wounded dozens at a funeral in eastern Afghanistan yesterday, officials said, the latest largescale attack on civilians. A local district chief and dozens of his relatives were at the ceremony in the Dur Baba district of Nangarhar province, near the Pakistan border, when a man detonated a vest he was wearing packed with explosives, the officials said. They said Dur Baba district chief Haji Hamesha Gul, who was wounded in the attack, was probably the main target. “My brother saw the bomber and grabbed him just as he pushed the button, killing him and many others,” Gul said from a hospital bed in Jalalabad, Nangarhar’s capital. Khan Mohammad, also in hospital in Jalalabad after being wounded in the attack, said: “I was at the graveyard just putting the dead body inside the tomb when I heard a loud explosion. Many people were screaming and crying for help.” The provincial governor’s spokesman, Ahmadzia Abdulzai, said the attack was aimed at Gul and his supporters because they had recently opposed insurgents in the area. The funeral was for one of Gul’s relatives. “We have at least 25 innocent people martyred and around 65 others wounded,” Abdulzai said. NATO also put the death toll at 25, but said more than 50 were people wounded.

Assad gives ‘positive’ pledges on Syria aid Red Cross president meets Syrian leader for 45 minutes By Stephanie Nebehay SYRIAN President Bashar al-Assad promised yesterday to allow the Red Cross to expand its humanitarian operations in his country which is gripped by a 17-month insurgency that forced more than 100,000 people to flee last month alone. Aid agencies are trying to beef up relief operations across Syria where the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) says needs have grown “exponentially” in recent weeks due to the escalation of fighting that has cut off civilians from basic services and life-saving supplies. Red Cross President Peter Maurer met the Syrian leader

in Damascus for 45 minutes and they discussed improving the delivery of aid to civilians as well as resuming prison visits which have stalled since May, the ICRC said. Maurer stressed the need for the wounded to have quick access to health care and to speed up imports of medical supplies, food and equipment for repairing water supply systems, said Hicham Hassan, spokesman for the ICRC. “President Assad gave positive commitments to our requests,” Hassan said, declining to give details. Syrian television quoted Assad as telling Maurer that Syria welcomed the ICRC’s work “as long as it is carried out in an independent and neutral way”. But diplomats cast doubt on whether Assad will grant unfettered access to needy

civilians, especially those in areas sympathetic to the revolt which are being pounded by his troops. “The commitments from Assad are a necessary step but far more important is whether those commitments are realised in practice,” a Western diplomatic source said. Activists reported clashes and shelling across Syria yesterday, including heavy fighting between government forces and rebels in many suburbs outside the capital of Damascus. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the bodies of six men were found in the southern neighbourhood of Tadamon, their hands were bound and there were signs of torture. Battles and bombardment raged on in the country’s economic hub Aleppo and nearby towns, local activists said.

The talks came as a UN official said the number of people fleeing Syria had risen sharply in August, with more than 100,000 seeking asylum in surrounding countries - the highest monthly total during the 17-month-old uprising against Assad. “It is quite an astonishing number and points to a significant escalation in the refugee movement and people seeking asylum. It probably points to a very precarious and violent situation inside the country,” Melissa Fleming, spokeswoman for the UN refugee agency said. The figure represented a tripling of the 35,000 who fled in July and a significant proportion of the overall total of 235,368 Syrian refugees who have registered in Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey during the conflict, the UNHCR said.

EGYPT’S former culture minister Farouk Hosni, once a candidate for the top job at the United Nations cultural agency UNESCO, is to stand trial on charges of making illicit gains, an official said yesterday. Hosni, an abstract painter, had served as culture minister for 23 years under former President Hosni Mubarak. “We decided to send Farouk Hosni to a criminal court on charges of accomplishing illegal gains estimated at 18 million Egyptian pounds ($2.95 million),” the head of the Illicit Gains Authority, Assem Al-Gohary, said. Legal experts say the decision means Hosni had failed to prove how he earned that sum of money. Investigations into his financial affairs began about four months ago. His file has been sent to the court which will now set a date for the trial. In 2009, Hosni ran for the post of UNESCO directorgeneral, a bid that angered many Western nations because of comments he made in 2008 when he said he would burn Israeli books if he found them in Egyptian libraries. He later apologised for the remarks saying they were taken out of context.

Salafi attack DOZENS of hardline Salafi Muslims attacked a hotel in Sidi Bouzid, birthplace of Tunisia’s revolution, because it was serving alcohol, the hotel’s owner said yesterday. It was believed to be the first such attack on a hotel in the North African country, which relies heavily on tourism. “About 100 Salafis attacked the hotel on Monday night and smashed all its contents. They entered the rooms and damaged furniture and smashed bottles of alcohol,” Jamil Horcheni, the owner of the hotel, said.

$24m estimate A MAJOR drawing by Italian Renaissance artist Raphael will go on sale in December with an estimated price between £10 million and £15 million ($16 million and $24 million), auction house Sotheby’s said yesterday. The 16th-century Head of an Apostle is a study for Raphael’s last painting, Transfiguration, which is on display at the Vatican Museum in Rome. Measuring roughly 38cm by 28cm, the picture was drawn in black chalk. Only two other Raphael drawings of the same calibre have been auctioned off in the last 50 years, Sotheby’s said.

World China warning as Clinton arrives CHINA warned the United States not to get involved in South China Sea territorial disputes yesterday as US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrived in Beijing pledging to pass on a strong message on the need to calm regional tension. The last time Clinton visited the Chinese capital, plans to highlight improving US-China ties were derailed by a blind Chinese dissident whose dramatic flight to the US embassy exposed the deeply uneasy relationship. The irritants this time are disputes over tiny islets and craggy outcrops in oil- and gas-rich areas of the South and East China Seas that have set China against US regional allies such as the Philippines and Taiwan. US officials say the message is once again one of cooperation and partnership - and an important chance to compare notes during a year of political transition. But the unease remains, sharpened by disputes in the South and East China Seas that have rattled nerves across the region and led to testy exchanges with Washington just as the Obama administration “pivots” to the Asia-Pacific region following years of military engagement in Iraq and Afghanistan. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei suggested that Washington was not a helpful force in the maritime disputes. “We have noted that the United States has stated many times that it does not take sides,” he said when asked about the US role. “We hope that the United States will abide by its promises and do more that is beneficial to regional peace and stability, and not the opposite.”

Democrats to make their case as convention opens First Lady Michelle Obama headlines first night By John Whitesides DEMOCRATS launched their case for Barack Obama’s reelection at their party convention yesterday, looking to draw a sharp contrast with Republican Mitt Romney and convince voters that the US president deserves four more years to fix the economy. A speech by first lady Michelle Obama capped the opening night of the threeday gathering in Charlotte, North Carolina, which concludes with Obama’s acceptance of the nomination in an address in a 74,000-seat downtown football stadium. The convention gives Obama a chance to recapture the political spotlight from Romney and Republicans, who used their gathering last week to repeatedly attack Obama’s economic leadership. The task for Obama and his allies will be to persuade voters disappointed by his first White House term that things will be better the second time around, while portraying the

running close in opinion polls ahead of the November 6 election, but Obama hopes to get more of a convention “bounce” in polls than Romney. Democrats plan to use their convention to highlight the party’s diversity, featuring a lineup of black, Hispanic and young speakers to appeal to the voting blocs that helped propel Obama to a comfortable victory in 2008. Michelle Obama’s speech was due to counter a successful convention appearance last week by Romney’s wife, Ann, who helped present a softer and more personal side of Romney to voters. While Republicans focused on attacking Obama and helping voters get to know Romney, Democrats have in some ways a more difficult task of keeping up voter enthusiasm for an incumbent in tough economic times. They will spell out Obama’s successes during his first term - from ordering the mission that killed al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden to the bailout of the auto industry.

Red Bull heir in police death A GRANDSON of the inventor of the Red Bull drink has been arrested accused of killing a Bangkok police officer in a hit-and-run. Police held Vorayuth Yoovidhya, 27, for questioning after tracing oil streaks to his family’s estate in a wealthy area of the Thai capital. He was facing charges of causing death by reckless driving and escaping arrest but was released on bail. Vorayuth admitted the accident in his Ferrari but said the officer’s motorcycle abruptly cut in front of him. Bangkok’s top police official, Lt. Gen. Comronwit Toopgrajank, said he took charge of the investigation after the local police superintendent tried to cover up the crime by turning in a bogus suspect. Gen. Comronwit personally led a team of officers who searched the compound of late Red Bull founder Chaleo Yoovidhya, one of Thailand’s wealthiest men who died this year, and confiscated a Ferrari with a badly damaged front bumper and broken windscreen.

budget-slashing economic remedies offered by Romney and his running mate, congressman Paul Ryan, as unacceptable alternatives. “The real issue now in the election is: who’s got the best plan going forward?” Democratic Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren said. “Mitt Romney has made clear what his plan is: cut taxes for the richest Americans and the biggest corporations, increase taxes on the middle class and don’t make any investments in the future. Barack Obama says that’s not the right way to do it,” she said. Ryan and Republicans kept the pressure on Democrats with a question they highlighted after their convention last week: Are voters better off after nearly four years of Obama? “We’re not better off than we were four years ago. Look at all the statistics,” Ryan said, citing the slow economic recovery and 8.3 per cent unemployment rate. Romney and Obama are

Business Swing in ECB sentiment pendulum chops UK stocks BRITAIN'S top share index fell yesterday reflecting investor uncertainty over whether this week's key European Central Bank (ECB) meeting will deliver the goods on a hoped for bond-buying scheme designed to ease the euro debt crisis. After rallying on Monday on hopes for stimulus measures from Thursday's ECB meeting, yesterday some commentators questioned whether the bank would have anything specific to announce. "It... seems more and more likely that Thursday's highly anticipated ECB conference will once again turn into a description of the euro zone debt crisis rather than identifying ways to solve the crisis," said Shavaz Dhalla, Financial Trader at Spreadex Ltd. Such uncertainties hurt heavyweight, risk sensitive sectors such as energy, miners and banks, which were the top sector fallers having led the low volume FTSE 100 rally on Monday. Market heavyweight Vodafone was the biggest individual drag on blue chip sentiment, accounting for over 10 per cent of the index's decline with a 2.6 per cent fall after Bernstein Research downgraded its rating to "market perform" from "outperform". "With the exception of a justified re-rating around the Verizon Wireless dividend, Vodafone's share price has long been strongly correlated with service revenue momentum. We expect service revenues to turn negative for the first time since March 2010 in the second quarter of fiscal year 2013, and for the share price to follow," Bernstein said in a note. The FTSE 100 closed down 86.40 points, or 1.5 per cent, at 5,672.01, ending back below the 5,700 level for the first time since August 2.

Jury member, French DJ Bob Sinclar, during an interview at the 69th Venice Film Festival (AFP)

DURING his first stint as director of the Venice film festival in 1999, Alberto Barbera said the Lido did not need a market in the age of the internet. Now he is back at the helm of the world's oldest movie showcase, he says that was a strategic blunder as Venice struggles to compete with rivals in Cannes, Berlin and Toronto.

In an attempt to turn the tide, Barbera launched a five-day slot for deal-making and industry shmoozing that he hopes will make Venice more commercially attractive for studios. "We need to bring back the professionals, we need to bring the buyers back to Venice," Barbera said. For that he hired Pascal Diot, a French sales veteran and manager of the Dubai Filmmart

who invited some 250 international buyers and sales agents. As the initiative wound up on Monday, the buzz was positive, but business muted. Big festival films were already sold before it began, and most industry executives said they used the Lido as a launchpad for deals to be closed in Toronto, a long established market venue whose dates partly overlap.

Peugeot unions to ballot staff at doomed plant FRENCH workers yesterday returned to the PSA Peugeot Citroen car plant earmarked for closure in Aulnay-sousBois, as unions scheduled a vote next week on possible industrial action. Peugeot, which is shedding more than 10,000 domestic jobs as it struggles to halt mounting losses, said work resumed "without incident" at the factory north of Paris as staff returned from the summer break. The Peugeot workforce's reaction to plans to shut the Aulnay plant, shrink another and eliminate thousands more positions across France will be closely watched by a European carmaking industry which is struggling with overcapacity. Workers at Aulnay will hold a general meeting on September 11 to decide on possible action in response to the July 12 closure announcement, CGT union official Jean-Pierre Mercier said. "It's always difficult to organise action on the first day back," Mercier said. "You have to wait for the crews to be back in place." The left-wing CGT, France's biggest industrial union and the most powerful at Parisbased Peugeot, has called for protests at the Paris auto show, Europe's biggest car industry gathering of the year, which opens later this month.

Airbus ups demand forecast as greener planes sought Manufacturer expects 28,000 global aircraft deliveries over 20 years By Rhys Jones AIRBUS, the world's largest manufacturer of passenger jets, raised its 20-year industry forecast for aircraft deliveries by about five per cent as its annual survey of global aviation demand pointed to healthy long-term growth. The European company owned by aerospace group EADS said global airlines will buy a total of $4 trillion of aircraft over the next 20 years as they seek efficient new models to counter high fuel costs and meet relentless demand for travel to and from emerging markets. Airbus expects population growth and urbanisation to continue to promote strong demand and raised the 20year forecast for the aircraft deliveries to 28,200. Of these, 27,350 are passenger jets and 850 are freighters. Airlines and lessors have continued to order aircraft despite the economic downturn, replacing expensive gas guzzlers with more efficient models as they come available. Asia, meanwhile, is also drawing in new capacity. "Emerging economic regions will represent more than half of all traffic growth in the next 20 years," Airbus sales chief John Leahy said.

"Increasing urbanisation and the doubling of the world's middle classes to five billion people is also driving growth. By 2031 mega cities will more than double to 92 and over 90 per cent of the world's traffic will be between or through these points." In its previous 20-year forecast, issued a year ago, Airbus had predicted total worldwide demand for 26,921 passenger jets worth $3.3 trillion between 2011 and 2030. Leahy and other industry leaders have dismissed warnings issued by some

aviation financiers of an asset bubble. In July Airbus' US rival Boeing predicted demand for 34,000 passenger jets worth $4.5 trillion over the next two decades, based on average economic growth of 3.2 per cent. Unlike Airbus, the Chicago-based company includes some regional jets in its tally, accounting for the higher total. The industry's dominant players are both bullish on the long-term outlook even though they cannot agree where all of it will come from.

The European plane maker continues to predict greater demand for the largest jets, such as its 525-seat A380 superjumbo or the 467-seat Boeing 747-8. It expects deliveries of 1,700 in this category in the next 20 years, up from the 1,331 forecast last year. Boeing says that most carriers will prefer slightly smaller, lighter jets, such as the 787, and pegs demand for the two mammoth planes much lower. Both jetmakers also expect soaring demand for narrowbody or single-aisle jets,

RYANAIR CONFIDENT ON AER LINGUS BID PACKAGE RYANAIR is confident it can allay competition concerns about its latest bid for rival Aer Lingus, its chief executive said yesterday, adding the budget airline was also seeking no more than a 25 per cent stake in Stansted Airport. Ryanair launched its third offer in five years for Irish rival Aer Lingus in June, a €694m bid that the former state carrier has urged shareholders to reject, while it is also interested in buying a slice of London's third-biggest airport. Europe's competition regulator last week launched an in-depth review of Ryanair's latest Aer Lingus bid, signalling the airline may have to make big concessions to ease competition concerns or face fresh failure. "We are confident that the remedies package will be enough to satisfy competition issues," Ryanair's chief executive Michael O'Leary said.

"There are 46 cross over routes and we will remedy all of them by getting airlines to come to Dublin and take them over," O'Leary added, referring to routes on which both Ryanair and Aer Lingus operate. Ryanair, which already owns 30 percent of Aer Lingus, had an initial bid turned down by the European Commission in 2007 and dropped a second offer in 2009. O'Leary also said Ryanair was seeking no more than a 24.9 per cent stake in Stansted and was in talks with "a number of potential bidders" who want the airline involved in a consortium bid. British airports operator BAA opened the way for a $2 billion sale of Stansted at the end of August, with Manchester Airports Group an early frontrunner in a bid battle expected to draw US banks, pension funds and Asian operators.

such as the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320, to provide the backbone of many airlines. The pair have decided to refresh their best-selling models with new engines to cut fuel costs and see off newcomers such as Canada's Bombardier or builders in China and Russia. Airbus raised its demand forecast for these 100 to 200seat aircraft by 1.5 per cent to 19,500 planes worth $1.6 trillion between 2012 and 2031. Boeing predicts a market worth $2 trillion, though its data includes aircraft from 90 seats upwards. Industry lobby group IATA last month announced an unchanged forecast for 2012 airline profits of $3 billion but was cautious on the outlook for the industry because of doubts over European growth. Premium travel is where airlines make most of their cash and is viewed as a key guide to business confidence. The switch towards more fuel-efficient aircraft is underpinning demand. Airlines are investing in new lightweight planes to lower fuel costs, though Airbus' Leahy points out that the industry's record of reducing fuel burn is already more impressive than many observers realise.

Priority now should be to investigate the loan portfolios of the two banks OPPOSITION parties have made a big fuss over the Central Bank’s instructions to staff to surrender their PCs and mobile phones in order to assist an independent investigation about problems facing the two biggest banks. They accused the Central Bank leadership of resorting to totalitarian practices and violating its employees’ right to privacy, which was safeguarded by the constitution and the law on personal data. It was a predictable reaction, in a country which seems to take its thinking on individual rights to irrational extremes. Opposition parties were being unreasonable in suggesting that the Central Bank management had no right to check the work PCs and mobile phones of staff, because it would be a violation of employees’ rights? An employer has the right to have access to company PCs and phones used by staff during their working day. This is standard practice in all advanced democracies, without anyone ever complaining that rights were being violated, when a company carries out checks of its workers’ PCs and phones. In fact there have been countless cases of employees being sacked for using company PCs for unauthorised purposes. In short, the Central Bank was acting well within its rights in seeking access to the PCs and phones its staff used while at work and the opposition’s criticism was totally unjustified. In an announcement, defending its action, the Central Bank claimed there was “a deliberate attempt to mislead” by the opposition parties “with the apparent aim of obstructing the independent investigation.” It is a pity that the opposition parties missed the real issue – the nature of the investigation which is all about the government’s search for scapegoats to blame for the precarious state of the economy. According to AKEL the investigation would show all those who “have responsibilities for the crime against the country’s economy, which unfortunately led to the support mechanism.” Is this the priority? Surely the priority now should be to investigate the loan portfolios of the two banks to establish the level of state assistance they would require so that the bailout funds could be agreed with the troika. This is what the Central Bank should have been concentrating on, if it wants to save the banking sector, instead of looking for scapegoats to hand over to a government, whose only aim is avoiding its responsibilities for the state of the economy. Once the financing needs of the two banks were established and a bailout agreement signed, the Central Bank could order an investigation into what went wrong and who was to blame for the banking crisis. But the Governor must realise that delay and prolonged uncertainty is pushing the banks deeper and deeper into trouble and rendering their recovery more and more difficult.

Get ready as oil prices re-enter ‘danger zone’ G

ET READY for a prolonged slowdown in the major industrial economies. If Brent crude oil prices stay substantially above $100 per barrel, the economies of the United States and Western Europe will almost certainly struggle in the next few months. At no point in the last five years have US manufacturing and the wider economy managed to expand strongly when international oil prices have been above $100. In every case, prices above $100 have been associated with a loss of momentum as the Institute of Supply Management (ISM)’s composite manufacturing index has fallen back towards the 50-point threshold dividing expanding activity from a contraction, as the attached chart illustrates (). This analysis is fairly crude and little more than a restatement of the familiar view that growth slows when the cost of oil in consuming countries (the “oil burden”) climbs much above 4 per cent of GDP. It uses Brent rather than US crude prices (also known as WTI) because seaborne, internationally traded Brent drives the cost of gasoline in the United States and around the world. Rising oil prices boost input costs and squeeze incomes for firms and households, as well as heightening uncertainty and deterring spending on big ticket items. The impact is rarely immediate. It takes time for the full impact of rising prices to be realised by consumers and businesses - several tank refills and months worth of operating costs before they appreciate the full hit. While the analysis is simple, it helps pinpoint the threshold at which high prices start to have an adverse impact on economic growth. Some analysts prefer to express oil’s impact in terms of the rate of change rather than an outright price level. University of California Professor James Hamilton has famously analysed slowdowns caused when oil prices surge above the previous peak set over the last one to

Comment John Kemp three years. On almost any timescale, current prices do not qualify as a Hamiltonian oil shock because Brent still remains below the record closing high set in July 2008 ($146) as well as more recent peaks in April 2011 ($127) and March 2012 ($126). Even so, there is compelling evidence that prices above $100 have been associated with a loss of economic momentum. It suggests the Hamiltonian focus on rates of change should be supplemented with an emphasis on absolute price levels. At least in the current environment, it seems the major industrial economies struggle when prices rise much above $100. It is no accident that Saudi Arabia identified $100 as its target price earlier this year. Leading oil analysts usually downplay the tension between high oil prices and GDP growth. Oil prices are framed as an investable “asset class” and a source of increased earnings for oil exploration and production companies rather than an input cost for other businesses and burden on consumers. More often high prices are framed as a consequence of strong demand and a healthy economy. The framework is intended to convey the idea that it is possible to have high oil prices and strong growth. In practice, that looks difficult. In the past, the International Energy Agency (IEA) and others have identified $100 as the threshold above which prices enter the “danger zone,” which looks about right. It is important not to be too doctrinaire about the threshold concept. The US and other economies do not suddenly come to a juddering halt when prices rise from $99 to $101. But the further prices rise above $100 and the longer they remain there, the bigger the hit to the economy,

ON THIS DAY SEPTEMBER 5

Prices over $100 a barrel cause loss of economic momentum all other things being equal. One of the unfortunate side effects of quantitative easing (QE) is that investors tend to respond by bidding up oil prices - undercutting some of the stimulus intended by policymakers. In the United States, both the first round of QE in 2010/11 and the second round launched in 2011 were associated with temporary oil price increases. The recent round of oil price rises illustrates the cruel conundrum. Oil prices have risen, in part, along with expectations that the Fed and the European Central Bank will provide further stimulus in the next few months, coupled with increasingly bellicose rhetoric in the Middle

East. But the rise in energy prices risks undercutting the intended stimulus effect. If past experience is anything to go by, the recent rise in Brent prices to well over $100 per barrel will, if it is sustained, lead to strong headwinds in the US and European economies within the next 3-4 months, ensuring that they continue to struggle through the end of the year. Of course, this time might be different. Perhaps the economy will weather price increases more successfully than. But no one has presented any convincing evidence for it. It seems much more likely that the recent rise in prices will eventually burn itself out by inducing another economic slowdown. (R)

Showbiz Scientologists auditioned wives for Cruise PAUL Haggis insists claims that Scientologists auditioned wives for Tom Cruise are true. The October issue of Vanity Fair magazine features an article claiming the controversial church set Tom up with Scientologist and actress Nazanin Boniadi in 2004, before he dumped her and married Katie Holmes and while Tom has denied the report, the Crash director and former member of the religion says it is true. Paul – who left the organisation in 2010 – told Showbiz411: “I was deeply disturbed by how the highest ranking members of a church could so

easily justify using one of their members; how they so callously punished [Boniadi] and then so effectively silenced her when it was done. It wasn’t just the threats; they actually made her feel ashamed, when all she had been was human and trusting.” He also claimed the actress – who is said to have fallen in love with Tom and been devastated when they split - tried to repair her relationship with Scientology before resigning two years ago and said he understood her “shame”. He added: “I’ve met quite a number of people who have been treated shamefully but are afraid to speak

out...Most of the others are just ordinary people...They live in fear of retribution, legal, financial or personal... They fear an incredibly wealthy organisation that boasts that it seeks truth, empowers people, brings families together, encourages independent thought and free speech, and champions human rights. “I would like to say that I don’t know how its members, many of them good and intelligent people, can remain so purposely blind when they are faced with evidence like this every day, but then I am no one to talk. I was happily blind for many years, so I know the shame that Naz feels.”

Green Mile’s ‘John Coffey’ dies at 54 Actor ClarkeDuncan has heart attack MICHAEL Clarke Duncan, the hulking, prolific character actor whose dozens of films included an Oscar-nominated performance as a death row inmate in The Green Mile and such other box office hits as Armageddon, Planet of the Apes and Kung Fu Panda, is dead at the age of 54. Duncan died at CedarsSinai Medical Centre in Los Angeles, where he was being treated for a heart attack, said his fiancee, reality TV personality Reverend Omarosa Manigault, in a statement released by publicist Joy Fehily. The muscular, 6ft 4in Duncan, a former bodyguard who turned to acting in his 30s, “suffered a myocardial infarction on July 13 and never fully recovered”, the statement said. “Manigault is grateful for all of your prayers and asks for privacy at this time. Celebrations of his life, both private and public, will be announced at a later date.” In the spring of 2012, Duncan had appeared in a video for Peta, the animal rights organisation, in which he spoke of how much better he felt since becoming a vegetarian three years earlier. “I cleared out my refrigerator, about 5,000 US dollars worth of meat,” he said. “I’m a lot healthier than I was when I was eating meat.” Duncan had a handful of minor roles before The Green Mile brought him an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor. The 1999 film, based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, starred Tom Hanks as a corrections officer at a penitentiary in the 1930s. Duncan played John Coffey, a convicted murderer with a surprisingly gentle demeanour and extraordinary healing powers. Duncan’s perform-

The shooting range present BRAD Pitt has splashed out on a £250,000 shooting range as a wedding present for Angelina Jolie. The couple are set to tie the knot at their French estate Miraval later this year and Brad installed the range and an armoury on site as a gift for his bride-to-be. A source told The Sun newspaper: “Brad had a lot to live up with his wedding gift considering Angelina exchanged vials of blood with her ex-husband Billy-Bob Thornton. “But Ange clearly finds shooting an aphrodisiac. When she and Brad were around weapons on the set of 2005’s ‘Mr & Mrs Smith’ they ended up together. “And by letting Angelina de-stress at the range, he’s less likely to get earache indoors. There’s a lot to be said for that when you have six kids.” It’s no surprise Brad is pulling out all the stops as it was recently claimed that Angelina has invited her ex-husbands Jonny Lee Miller and Billy Bob to the wedding. A source said: “Angelina has remained close to both Jonny and Billy so they’d certainly be invited.” An insider explained: “Brad has been doing most of the wedding planning and has been having a nightmare with refurbishments at the chateau. Angelina has left it pretty much up to him and the kids who are really excited.”

Clarke-Duncan played an innocent inmate on death row with a unusual healing gift ance caught on with critics and moviegoers and he quickly became a favourite in Hollywood, appearing in several films a year. He owed some of his good fortune to Bruce Willis, who recommended Duncan for The Green Mile after the two appeared together in Armageddon. Duncan would work with Willis again in Breakfast of Champions, The Whole Nine Yards and Sin City. His industrial-sized build was suited for everything from superhero films (Daredevil) to comedy (Talledega Nights, School for Scoundrels). His baritone alone was good enough for several animated movies, including, Kung Fu Panda, Delgo and Brother Bear. Among Duncan’s television credits: The Apprentice, The

Finder, Two and a Half Men and The Suite Life of Zack and Cody. Born in Chicago in 1957, Duncan was raised by a single mother whose resistance to his playing football led to his deciding he wanted to become an actor. But when his mother became ill, he dropped out of college, Alcorn State University, and worked as a ditch digger and bouncer to support her. By his mid-20s, he was in Los Angeles, where he looked for acting parts and became a bodyguard for Will Smith, Jamie Foxx and other stars. The murder of rapper Notorious B.I.G., for whom Duncan had been hired to protect before switching assignments, led him to quit his job and pursue acting full-time. Early film and television credits, when he was usu-

ally cast as a bodyguard or bouncer, included Bulworth, A Night at the Roxbury and The Players Club. Paying tribute to his Green Mile co-star, Hanks said: “I am terribly saddened at the loss of Big Mike. He was the treasure we all discovered on the set of The Green Mile. He was magic. He was a big love of man and his passing leaves us stunned.” Newsroom star Olivia Munn shared her personal memories of the actor, writing: “Michael Clarke Duncan always had a smile on his face & a big bear hug ready for you. My thoughts & prayers are with his family&friends. RIP (sic).” Actor David Boreanaz also took to twitter to remember his friend. He wrote: “R.I.P. my friend MCD. I will miss you.”

SIR PAUL McCartney is to be given a Legion d’honneur award in France. The British singer will receive the medal - France’s highest public distinction - from President Francois Hollande in Paris on Saturday. Stars including Clint Eastwood and Liza Minnelli have previously been gifted the award, created by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802, which is represented by a red lapel thread. The recipient of the award must pay for their own medal from a licensed jeweller, ranging from $210 to $880. However the award can also be rescinded, as it was recently in the case of disgraced British fashion designer John Galliano after he was sacked from Dior over anti-Semitic comments he made while drunk. Paul recently performed at the opening ceremony of the London Olympic Games, for which he was only paid a token gesture. He said: “They

don’t pay you to perform, but what does happen is you get tickets to events, so they asked me what I would ideally like to go to, and so I sent a little list. “I’m a big fan of athletics, when that’s on the TV, I don’t go out, so the Olympic Games are great for that for me.”

Education

UK education minister is firm in GCSE grades row Gove will not intervene in grades furore, saying exams ‘unfit for purpose’ By Alison Kershaw MICHAEL Gove refused to intervene in the row over English GCSE grade boundaries on Monday as he warned the exams are “unfit for purpose”. Ministers should not “meddle” in decisions made by Ofqual, the independent exams regulator, the Education Secretary said. He told MPs that it is down to Ofqual and exam boards to decide how to mark papers and rejected fresh calls to order a regrading of this summer’s English GCSE examinations. Gove, who had faced calls over the last few days to order a regrading of the key exam, was answering scheduled education questions in the Commons Monday afternoon. He said that problems had arisen from the structure of the GCSE exam and that the Government was reforming the system and removing modular exams. For the first time this year, students taking GCSE English sat modular exams and submitted pieces of “controlled assessment” coursework completed under strict classroom supervision. Shadow education secretary Stephen Twigg said: “Over the past 10 days we’ve had countless examples of young people getting a D for work assessed this summer that would have got a C grade in January.” One head, Sally Coates of Burlington Danes Academy in west London, had said it is “blatantly unfair to move the goalposts without warning midway throughout the year”, Twigg said, asking Gove if he agreed.

The row over this summer’s GCSE English results began as it emerged that GCSE English grading boundaries had been altered between January and June “I do agree that these examinations are unfit for purpose and need to change,” the Education Secretary replied. He later added: “Ofqual is an independent regulator accountable to Parliament. If ministers were to interfere in Ofqual’s decisions,

they would be meddling where they should not interfere.” Gove said it was “opportunistic” for Twigg to make the case for this. He also suggested that there should be a greater degree of transparency about the grade-setting

and marking processes. “That is one of the reasons Ofqual exists as an independent regulator and it’s one of the reasons why it should continue to do that job, not ministers,” Gove added. The row over this summer’s GCSE English results

began as national GCSE results were published and it emerged that GCSE English grading boundaries had been altered between January and June. Headteachers have predicted that thousands of pupils have been affected by the move, with concerns centring around those who were expected to get a C but ended up with a D grade. On Friday, Ofqual announced it would be be inappropriate for either of the sets of exams to be regraded, as teaching unions continued to threaten legal action over the issue. Pupils who are unhappy with their results have been told that they can resit the GCSE in November. Hugh Bayley, Labour MP for York Central, asked Gove if he would advise Ofqual to re-mark papers according to January’s boundaries. Gove replied: “I share, sadly, the sadness that many teachers and many students will feel about what happened with GCSE English this year. “I think it’s appropriate that we all learn lessons about some of the mistakes that were made in introducing an examination modular in style, which was not best equipped to ensure that all students could perform well and be treated fairly.” But he added he would not tell Ofqual what to do. “I will not because ... when he was supporting the Government, Mr Ed Balls pointed out that Ofqual was an independent regulator of standards, independent of ministers reporting directly to Parliament. “He said ‘I am not going to second guess its work’ and I fall to that position.”

RIMS opens the door to music LIANA Varnavides, head of the recently-established Royal International Music School (or RIMS) expounds her passion for learning music when asked why the school was opened. This is the third year the awarded Royal International Music School is teaching children on the island, and already it has built a reputation based on mutual respect, devotion to music and the hope of giving every child the chance to flourish. “We personally feel the need to give opportunities to children,” says Varnavides, who teaches piano at the school. All registrations are accepted, regardless of when they are submitted. And should a student not be able to afford an instrument to practise on, the school has instruments to rent out to students at low prices. Even for the school’s renowned piano lessons, a keyboard is provided to those for whom access to a piano is not feasible. The school’s curriculum begins with lessons from the age of two until four, where parent participation is included. These group lessons, conducted twice a week, focus on developing the child’s handeye coordination, rhythm and speech. After the age of four, children can begin to attend lessons without parents, but with well-respected and qualified instructors of which there are seven - even Irina Zeniou, a Russian opera singer, is a member of the staff at RIMS. By the age of six, children are able to distinguish notes, read and sing them, and can choose to study saxophone, guitar, piano, violin, clarinet and even accordion. Musical theory starts after the third year, with eight grades in total, and exams are offered via the British Council for internationally recognised certificates. Opportunities for US with Brazilian students China ‘brainwashing’ in schools opposed U.S. colleges, holding onto a shrinking lead as the world’s biggest educator of international students, are eyeing a promising new market in Brazil, an emerging economy with big hopes for the future but a shortage of skilled labour. US Commerce Undersecretary Francisco Sanchez recently led officials from 66 US colleges and universities to Brasilia, Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro on what he told Reuters is the biggest trade mission of the Obama administration. The seven-day visit capitalised on Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff’s “Science Without Borders” initiative aimed at reducing her nation’s skills deficit by sending as many as 101,000 students to study abroad over the next four years. “She’s stated publicly that she wants half of those to

Brazilian ‘Science without Borders’ pupils in the US go to the United States and specifically to study in the STEM areas: science, technology, engineering and math,” Sanchez said. Brazil’s skilled-worker shortage is a major challenge on the country’s path to developed-nation status.

In addition to spurring Brazil to seek educational opportunities abroad, the shortage has encouraged the government to explore ways to ease immigration rules to attract more foreign professionals. In sectors ranging from construction and oil exploration to telecommunications, companies complain of not being able to find qualified applicants in Brazil to fill jobs. While Brazil’s own universities are graduating an increasing number of students, many still lack the necessary skills to compete internationally, said João de Castro Neves, a Latin American analyst at the Eurasia group in Washington. “It’s basically a matter of quality, not only at the universities but at the primary schools and the secondary schools,” Castro Neves said.

THOUSANDS of protesters surrounded Hong Kong’s government headquarters on Monday over a plan to introduce a pro-China school curriculum they describe as an attempt to brainwash students. Chanting “No to brainwashing education. Withdraw national education”, some 8000 people denounced a Hong Kong government-funded booklet entitled “The China Model” they say glorifies China’s single Communist party rule while glossing over more brutal aspects of its rule and political controversies. One hunger striker was taken away on a stretcher on the third straight day of protests after fasting for more than 40 hours. The protests represent a challenge for Hong Kong’s new pro-Beijing leader Leung Chun-ying, who took office in July, and who has come under

A hunger striking teacher is taken to hospital on Monday pressure for policies that have highlighted underlying tensions as the financial hub becomes increasingly intertwined, economically and socially, with China. Polls suggest Hong Kong public distrust towards China is at a record high some

15 years after the former British colony reverted to Chinese rule in 1997, with many fearing Beijing’s hand encroaching increasingly into the city’s cherished freedoms and political affairs. Many of the protesters were students who flocked to the demonstrations straight after their first day back at school, some heckling Leung to scrap the scheme or step down. Despite protracted public opposition to the scheme, officials resisted calls to scrap it from local primary and secondary schools, saying it was aimed at instilling a greater sense of national pride and belonging towards China. “The important thing is to ensure that the public concern or the parents’ and the students’ worry about the so-called brainwashing will not happen,” said Hong Kong’s number two official, Carrie Lam.

Coming Up Theatre Two helpings of drama THE NATIONAL Theatre of Greece is in Cyprus this week as part of the Kypria International Festival, presenting not one but two theatrical productions: Moliere’s Amphitryon and Pericles by William Shakespeare. First off the company will present Moliere’s Amphitryon on Friday at the Makarios III Amphitheatre in Nicosia. Translated into Greek by Chrysa Prokopaki, set to the music of Dimitris Kamarotos and featuring period costumes by Angelos Mendis, the much-anticipated National Theatre production boasts a cast of Greek stars - Amalia Moutousi, Yiorgos Gallos and Nikos Kouris as Alcmene, Amphitryon and Jupiter respectively. Drawing his inspiration from Greek mythology, Moliere based his work - an instant success with French aristocracy - on the story of Tiryns’ prince Amphitryon, as told by Plautus in a play from 190-185BC. In Moliere’s three-act play, Jupiter (Greek mythology’s Zeus) takes the form of Amphitryon to make it into the bed of the latter’s wife Alcmene, who in mythology gave birth to Hercules. Jupiter is assisted by Hermes disguised as the servant Sosie, but when the real Amphitryon makes an entrance, the divine presence gives way to

The National Theatre of Greece will perform two theatrical pieces within the framework of the Kypria International Festival: Moliere’s Amphitryon (above) and Shakespeare’s Pericles chaos. Full of intrigue, passion and hilarious twists and turns, Moliere’s 1668 comedy was first staged by the National Theatre in 1948 under the direction of Dimitris Rondiris. The following day, theatergoers in Nicosia can also catch one of Shakespeare’s late works, Pericles, an exciting but rarely performed play. The performance was part of the Globe to Globe Festival in London on the occasion of the Olympic Games programme, in which some of the most significant theatres of the world were invited to present Shakespeare’s complete repertoire, each in a different language.

As the story goes, Pericles is shipwrecked at Pentapolis, where he marries Princess Thaisa. They sail for Tyre, but during a storm, Thaisa is presumed dead in childbirth and is buried at sea. A grieving Pericles leaves Marina, the baby, with friends at Tarsus and wanders the seas for 14 years. Meanwhile, Thaisa, washed ashore, is miraculously revived. Marina’s life is full of misfortune but, through twists of fate and divine intervention, the family is reunited at last in this modern adaptation of the tale. Yannis Houvardas, Artistic Director of the Greek National Theatre, directs this production based on the ensemble power of 12 of the

best Greek actors in a collective dramatic narration with extreme humour and darkness, continuous transformations, a bare, hostile and wondrous stage, minimum stage props and tremendous physical intensity characterising the action. This Weekend Other Events Down and dirty with coal ALMOST a year ago, visual artist Rinos Stefani organised a happenning called the Charcoal Project in the Tylliria area of Cyprus. In the middle of the road in the buffer zone, between Pyrgos’ Greek Cypriot and Limnitis’ Turkish checkpoints a performance took place which was watched by both communities and soldiers of the United Nations. The idea of the Charcoal Project and the performance in the buffer zone was developed by Stefani in 2006 and this Saturday a continuation will once again materialise, an activity which is included in the programme of cultural events of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The whole idea centres on the material of charcoal, but why charcoal? The question of unity of opposites was introduced by Greek philosopher Heraclitus who uses the succession of opposites as a foundation for change. Charcoal as a material embodies two opposing symbols. Its black colour evokes conflict, destruction and death. On the other hand it refers to cooking of food, nourishment and survival of human beings. Charcoal is also one of the oldest and most traditional drawing tools, thus a medium of human communication. Therefore, the opposites, life and death, coexist in the same object. Based on the unity of opposites as a concept and using charcoal as a material, Stefani invited six artists from Cyprus and abroad to participate in the Charcoal performance in Paphos. They were each asked to develop and present his/her own performance. The participating artists are: Dervish Dervisoglou, Chiaki Kamikawa, Stefano Paci, Iason Stavrakis, Rinos Stefani and Susan Vargas. From Saturday until September 16, the House of Arts and Letters in Paphos will host an exhibition of works by the above six artists based on the same subject and a video by Yiannos Economou entitled Pyrgos will be screened. Charcoal Project Interactive happening by Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots and other international artists using charcoal and tables as the main material. Exhibition of works and screenings of the video documentary Charcoal Project. Opens September 8, until September 16. House of Arts and Letters, 41 Athinas Street, Paphos. Working hours: 9-12pm. Samsung’s crisis driver and dr A heightened sense of crisis: Samsung Group Chairman Lee Kun-hee

A lack of originality has long led Samsung to have a reputation for making knock offs says Miyoung Kim

I

N HIS 1997 book, Samsung Chairman Lee Kunhee wrote that a successful company needs a “heightened sense of crisis”, so that it always looks ahead even when it’s doing well, and needs to be able to respond to change. It’s a credo that has driven Samsung Electronics to become the world’s biggest technology firm by revenue – it sells more televisions, smartphones and memory chips than anyone else - and makes the group a must-visit case study for a stream of Chinese firms seeking to tap the secrets of Korean success. But, in the wake of last month’s damaging US patent ruling, which Samsung has

Meetings at Samsung are unlikely to take place in such modern surroundings

said it will appeal - the Korean group was fined more than $1 billion after a jury found it had copied key features of Apple Inc’s iPhone - the group’s topdown command structure and decision-making process are blamed for stifling creativity. What’s been good for getting things done quickly, such as making bold decisions on big investments in chips and display screens, may not now best suit a company that needs to shift from being a ‘fast follower’ - quick to match others’ products - to an innovator. Within Samsung, where some designers feel overlooked and undermined, there are calls for a change of tack. The ‘constant crisis’ has

worked well, helping Samsung overtake Japanese technology brands Sony, Sharp and Panasonic in chips, TVs and displays, end Nokia’s decadelong supremacy in handsets and overtake Apple in smartphones. But that has come with a big reputational hit - that Samsung makes knock-off products. “It’s a crisis of design,” JK Shin, head of Samsung’s mobile division told staff in February 2010 as Samsung worked on its first Galaxy phone in a panicky response to the iPhone’s smash-hit debut, according to an internal memo filed to a US court as part of Apple’s lawsuit. “Influential figures outside

the company come across the iPhone, and they point out that ‘Samsung is dozing off.’ “All this time, we’ve been paying all our attention to Nokia, and concentrated our efforts on things like ‘folder’, ‘bar’, ‘slide,’ yet when our UX (user experience) is compared to the unexpected competitor Apple’s iPhone, the difference is truly that of Heaven and Earth.” The sense of crisis and urgency to catch Apple drove Samsung designers and engineers to opt for a concept that best matched the look and feel of the iPhone, according to one Samsung designer, who isn’t authorised to talk to the media and didn’t want to be identified. “Designers have lots of unique and creative ideas, but these have to be loved by the top decision-makers. The problem was, because they were so fascinated by the Apple design, these ideas weren’t really satisfactory to please the top level,” said the designer. “I think elsewhere top man-

agers respect their chief designer’s decision, but at Samsung, they overrule designers and have the final say about what design we go with. That limits our capability. To be better than a good fast follower, Samsung needs a more horizontal culture and to empower designers.” A Samsung executive, who didn’t want to be named, countered that the group had started out with little innovation – it struggled even to make simple black and white TVs - but now drives new ideas internally through incentives and bonuses, with Lee himself very interested in new technology and design. One recent example of that top-heavy command structure came less than a fortnight before the launch of Samsung’s Galaxy S III smartphone in May, when vice chairman Choi Gee-sung ordered half a million blue phone cases to be thrown away as the design, with thin, silver stripes, was unsatisfactory, according to a person familiar with the matter.

After a number of tweaks, Choi approved the final design on a Sunday just 10 days before launch, triggering an initial supply bottleneck and delaying shipments of some 2 million units, according to some analysts. Similarly, when Choi visited

are lacking a WOW idea to share with GS (Choi). Generally, lacking confidence in our plan to ‘beat Apple’.” The react-fast philosophy is a far cry from how Apple worked. Christopher Stringer, a 17-year Apple design veteran, told the US court that

around 16 “maniacal” individuals from all over the world used to brainstorm around a kitchen table to come up with the company’s mobile products. By contrast, Samsung’s design sanctum looks much like any other Samsung department, a Dilbert sprawl of desks and cubicles with framed aphorisms from the founding family on the walls: “Be with Customers”, “Create Products that Contribute to Humanity” and “Challenge the World, Create the Future.” “It’s pretty much a topdown, hierarchical culture that doesn’t do any good in inspiring creativity,” the designer added. “I don’t think it’s a unique Samsung problem, but one that plagues South Korean society as a whole. Samsung is making efforts to change it, but it’s still very much top-down.” “Probably what we need now is the creative environment that Silicon Valley boasts.” Living up to its reputation for moving swiftly and nimbly

in an increasingly competitive market, Samsung’s mobile product life cycle is getting shorter - it introduces a new product around every six months. In a recent surprise, Samsung unveiled a smartphone using Microsoft’s latest mobile software, rushing the announcement just days

‘Probably what we need now is the creative environment that Silicon Valley boasts’ before the highly anticipated launch of Nokia’s version. “Regardless of any hindrance, Samsung will continue to provide outstanding, innovating and unique products that stand out in the industry,” Samsung’s mobile chief Shin said at Europe’s biggest electronics show in Berlin. Shin has also praised the company’s “diligent and ex-

founder in 1987, stepped down in 2008 after he was convicted of embezzlement and tax evasion, but returned within two years following a presidential pardon. He marked his return with his familiar refrain. “We’re in a real crisis. Top global companies are reeling and (I’m) not sure what will happen to Samsung. Most products and businesses that represent Samsung today will

be gone in 10 years time. We should start again. There’s no time to waste.” That summer, Samsung saw its telecoms profit halved as Apple captured consumers’ hearts and wallets. But it swiftly rebounded with its Galaxy line-up and has posted record profits each year since. Annual profit this year is likely to top $22 billion, up 45 per cent from 2010. But the crisis culture is wearing thin for some. “It does keep people agile and alert, but people joke that once you work more than five years at Samsung you’ve probably heard it more than enough and think it more of a repetitive cycle,” said a Samsung chip developer, who wasn’t authorised to talk publicly about the company. “You just get used to these things.” Even 70-year-old billionaire Lee may be mellowing. Briefed after the bruising Apple defeat, Lee said only: “Deal with it well,” according to a person familiar with the matter.

WIN A TRIP FOR 2 TO SOUTH AFRICA IN AID OF PAPHOS HOSPICE Organised by SACY NEWS The SACY NEWS was launched early 2012, and has within a short period, become a popular and well-liked publication among the South African community, and other expatriates living on the island of Cyprus. With the support of the South African Consulate, the SACY NEWS has become a prime media source for all South African Cypriots living in Cyprus. “We wanted to create a ‘voice’ for all South Africans in Cyprus. The South African community has increased in number, and it was only a matter of time before we had our own community paper,” says Paul Charalambous, editor of the SACY NEWS. The high-quality publication is produced on a bi-monthly basis and is distributed all over the island, free of charge. The SACY NEWS’ presence as a media sponsor for almost all South African events has spread extensively throughout the island. In recognition of the strong and supportive South African community, the SACY NEWS will be organising the South African New Year’s Eve Ball at the ‘Fifth Floor Restaurant’ in Paphos. This event will become an annual affair on the SACY NEWS calendar. “Everyone is welcome,” says Paul. “We want to revive the traditional South African Greek events we were accustomed to in South Africa.” The SACY NEWS will be organising competitions on a regular basis to support the many charities on the island. After months of planning, and the support from many sponsors in Cyprus and South Africa, the SACY NEWS recently launched the ‘Win a trip for 2 to South Africa Competition’ in aid of the Paphos Hospice. This unique prize package, which includes two return tickets to Johannesburg with Etihad Airways and Century Travel, will be complimented by seven nights at the 5-Star Peermont D’oreale Grande at Emperors Palace Hotel, Casino and Convention Resort. The prize includes an additional two nights at Sandton’s premier Michelangelo Hotel, and a further two nights at the Thabana Safari Lodge for an exceptional full board safari experience. SAFARIS 4 U – A leading group tour operator based in Johannesburg, will provide unique tours to top attractions in Johannesburg, during the course of your stay. Tickets are on sale from all Paphos Hospice Charity Shops, participating outlets (island wide) and private individuals for the price of € 3 per ticket. The winner will be announced at the South African New Year’s Eve Ball on the 31st December 2012. ARIES March 21 - April 20

LEO July 23 - August 22

SAGITTARIUS November 23 - December 21

Your head is in gear, but don’t be so busy you forget about your welfare. Your mind may be thinking through so many things, so you could forget to eat properly or even sleep. This is a hectic time for you, but one that could be fulfilling and rewarding. Make the most of it by living well and making time to relax - you’ll feel better and better.

You may be in the mood to purchase some items for your home. Mars may be stirring up your desire for a beautiful and atmospheric place to live and could also be encouraging you to transform you space by tearing down old wallpaper, removing ancient stuff and generally giving yourself more space to be. Go for it and you’ll feel much happier.

You are loving the chance to make a statement, give a presentation, or have your fifteen minutes of fame and get much needed publicity. If you have a desire to make a big splash, this is your opportunity to do it. With careful planning and renewed confidence you could transform your career. Be a bright, thoughtful, careful and original spark.

TAURUS April 21 - May 21

VIRGO August 23 - September 23

CAPRICORN December 22 - January 20

The Moon in your sign means you can ask the cosmos for a favour and you may even be lucky enough to get it fulfilled. If your partner has not done what you asked, try again and you may find that they change their mind, and may be only too pleased to help out. You may also find that a promise of passion turns out to be fulfilled. Phwoar!

You now have a chance to unravel some of the emotions that have been plaguing you. You may not be sure whether it is love, or something else. You may never know until you test the water and find out what you really feel. Be bold, take the plunge and see what happens. Meanwhile you may have a bright idea that is worth sharing and acting upon.

You’re a hard worker with lots of energy which means you know how to achieve. If you have plans, schedules or deadlines get onto them as your focus could turn a difficult situation around. If you feel like taking a calculated risk today then go ahead, as Mercury in aspect to Mars suggests you may get a tip from someone that gives you the upper hand.

GEMINI May 22 - June 21

LIBRA September 24 - October 23

AQUARIUS January 21 - February 19

You may be keen to make some kind of lifestyle change that could result in greater health, a happier home or a more relaxed yet productive routine. As Mercury connects with Mars you might be responding to something you read, maybe an article or a book that has a message which seems made for you. Get motivated you can get a huge amount done.

Money makes the world go round, but sometimes it can also cause us more than few problems. Be extra careful with your finances and don’t spend on things you think you need but may never actually use or wear. You may have more expenses in general, so a good time to be more frugal. This situation isn’t forever, but needs attention now.

As Venus moves through Cancer and your health zone, this may be a good time to take up swimming, or other aquatic activities. The sign on the cusp of your health zone gives clues as to the type of exercise that might suit you best. You don’t have to end up achieving Olympian standards, for more laid back options can be perfect for loosening up.

CANCER June 22 - July 22

SCORPIO October 24 - November 22

PISCES February 20 - March 20

Your emotions may have stopped you in your tracks and prevented you from getting on with vital plans and projects. This phase may last a while longer, but for now don’t resist your feelings, instead welcome them, even those you might normally try to push away. Embracing them helps to release them - so don’t suffer needlessly.

Someone may come along with a great idea which seems to help resolve an interesting situation you have been mulling over lately. As Mercury angles well with Mars it brings a chance to create a brilliant plan along with a friend who seems able to see your situation from a fresh perspective. It is possible they may see a way forward where you can’t.

Issues at home may cause tensions within your relationship and you may feel a need to do something to make it all right. It is best not to make snap decisions or to take action on the spur of the moment as you may regret it. Instead stay cool and be patient. Before long you and your partner may see things more positively and so find a helpful solution.

Television PICK OF THE DAY Shameless (LTV2, 21.55) “The craziest TV family of all time is back for a second season,” trumpet LTV with just a touch of hyperbole - and those who saw the original UK Shameless might disagree with that assessment but in fact the two shows are near-identical, a much more faithful re-working than (say) The Office. Maybe it’s because the original was semi-autobiographical, creator Paul Abbott having based it loosely on his childhood in Burnley as the seventh of eight children (neglected by both parents, he ended up attempting suicide, spent time in a mental hospital and was taken into foster care), and you don’t mess with a person’s memories - especially since Abbott was among the producers of the US version. This is actually a ‘dramedy’ yet the tone is slightly broader in the US version, maybe because white-trash culture is more of a joke in America than chav culture in the UK - or maybe because William H. Macy is a naturally hangdog actor, playing perpetually drunk paterfamilias Frank Gallagher, the all-too-still centre around whom the mayhem revolves. There’s a lot of mayhem, with six troublesome kids trying to take care of themselves as Dad lies in an alcoholic stupor - and the trailer for Season 2 (starting tonight on LTV2) unsurprisingly plays up the bad behaviour, stacking up so many girl-

on-girl kisses, hot bedroom action, pole-dancing, stripping, a girl tattooing the word ‘WHORE’ on her arm, a young man admitting “You just made my boy parts get bigger” and so much uninhibited dialogue you may wonder why LTV still bother with an Adult Zone. Then again, that’s the trailer for the whole season, presumably cherry-picking highlights in the interests of marketing. There’s a fair bit of character drama in between, and a fair bit of thoughtful realism. “Shameless doesn’t escape anything, it lives in the world it is given and every so often reminds you ... that the sweetest lemonade is almost bitter,” raves a poetic British fan at the Internet Movie Database - and Paul Abbott himself had this to say: “It’s not My Name Is Earl or Roseanne. It’s got a much graver level of poverty attached to it. It’s not blue collar; it’s no collar”. Tonight, “Fiona gets a job in a club while Frank loses Liam in a bet,” says the synopsis - and Liam is a toddler, the youngest of the Gallagher children (who also happens to be black, though no-one knows why), so losing him in a bet is even more shameless than the show’s other shameless behaviour; but not by much. It’s just like real life, in a crazy-TV-family sort of way. ‘Summertime’ is the episode title.

SATELLITE

Noises Off (LTV3, 18.30) Not the greatest slot for this underrated comedy - but it’s worth checking out and not many people know it, so here we go. Michael Frayn’s play was a West End sensation, a devilishly clever bedroom farce that upended the genre by observing the farce fi rst onstage - as a sex comedy called ‘Nothing On’ - then behind the scenes, its heroes being a small-time theatre troupe whose own backstage chaos is as farcical as the play they’re performing. The conceit is theatrical, and this fi lm version was a major flop - but I’ve always found it very funny (partly because Michael Frayn’s material is so strong), with Michael Caine as the director desperately trying to get the production together only to become caught up in the mounting chaos. Lines are flubbed, props misplaced, entrances mis-timed, furniture gets tripped over, and the cast - also including Christopher Reeve and John Ritter - give it their best shot. Made in 1992.

Betrayed: A Story of Three Women (Capital TV, 21.00) How do you betray three women at the same time? It’s a tough one, but an enterprising husband has the answer: he has an affair with the 19-year-old daughter of his wife’s best friend, thereby betraying the trust of his wife, the friend and the daughter (maybe not the last one so much, but she is a kid and so on). Meredith Baxter is the wife - and the fi lm is actually about her and the friend (Swoosie Kurtz) more than the husband, this being a made-for-TV drama aimed squarely at female viewers who secretly suspect that all men are scum. If that’s your niche - or if you just want a cheesy melodrama with that glossy 90s feel - enjoy. Made in 1995.

Outrage (Novacinema1, 22.00) It’s Takeshi Kitano, a legend in Japan, famous both as a comedian and the creator of stylish gangster fi lms with a faint tinge of deadpan humour. He’s also famous for his inexpressive face, made even more inexpressive after some of it was paralysed in a motorbike accident that nearly killed him in the mid-90s - and the 90s were his glory days (Sonatine and Hana-Bi being his bestknown fi lms) but he’s still going strong, now in his 60s and winning some acclaim for this violent yakuza drama (yakuza being Japan’s word for Mafi a). Various crime lieutenants compete for the attention of the big boss, especially when a henchman falls into disfavour after making a deal with a rival clan; the result is a series of killings, territorial invasions and other acts of businesslike brutality - mostly lacking the occasional humour and lyricism of Kitano’s 90s fi lms, but effective in a cool, mechanical way. In Japanese; made in 2010.

Sport IN BRIEF No censure for Pistorius comments OSCAR Pistorius will not face censure for his comments on regulations governing prosthetic running blades, the International Paralympic Committee said today. The South African yesterday apologised for raising concerns over the length of some rivals’ blades immediately after being beaten to T44 200 metres gold by Brazil’s Alan Fonteles Oliveira on Sunday night. IPC communications director Craig Spence said “There will be no disciplinary action against Oscar for his comments.” A date is still to be set for a meeting between Pistorius and the IPC, with arrangements being taken place through official channels. “We’re waiting for the national Paralympic committee of South Africa to go through the relevant channels and contact the IPC and then the meeting will be set up,” Spence added.

Double gold for McKillop FOUR years after being denied the chance to win two golds in Beijing, Ireland’s Michael McKillop sealed his status as the world’s best Paralympic middledistance runner by making it a London double. The 22-year-old, who has cerebral palsy, obliterated the opposition to claim victory in the T37 1500 metres. His time of four minutes 08.11 seconds was a new Paralympic record and more than six seconds ahead of Australia’s Brad Scott. McKillop’s success came two days after he landed 800m gold in equally emphatic fashion and made up for taking only one gold in Beijing when the 1500m was not on the programme.

WBC strike threat ended JAPAN look set to defend their title at next year’s World Baseball Classic (WBC) after emergency talks averted the threat of a player boycott yesterday. Japan’s players had voted to strike, angry over their share of tournament sponsorship revenue, until several meetings finally led to a thaw in their position. Players’ association president Takahiro Arai said a deal had been reached to play in March, when Japan will aim to win the WBC for the third time in a row.

Gatland confirmed as British & Irish Lions boss

Hernandez, Leguizamon return boosts Argentina

Australia tour poses ‘one hell of a challenge’

ARGENTINE hopes of an unlikely first victory over world champions New Zealand were boosted yesterday when flyhalf pivot Juan Martin Hernandez and openside flanker Juan Manuel Leguizamon were named in the side after returning from injury. The dynamic duo were the only changes to coach Santiago Phelan’s starting lineup for their Rugby Championship clash in Wellington on Saturday, bolstering an experienced lineup that boasts over 400 caps. Hernandez has recovered from a torn leg muscle that kept him out of the home 16-16 draw with South Africa on August 25 and takes over from Nicolas Sanchez. The return of the classy flyhalf is a huge boost for the Pumas, who face an uphill challenge against the All Blacks who have lost only four times at home in 10 years. The gifted Hernandez has been plagued by injury in recent times. He made his first start for Argentina in three years in their first Rugby Championship clash, a 27-6 defeat by the Springboks in Durban last month. His tactical kicking and ability to bring runners into the game will be important against a measly All Black defence that kept Australia pointless in the second of their two wins over their trans-Tasman rivals 10 days ago. The visitors will be delighted to have the powerful 29-yearold Leguizamon back in their ranks for the Wellington test. The flanker had been absent due to a stomach problem but is fit now and takes the place of Alvaro Galindo. Leguizamon caused the All Blacks problems in their World Cup quarter-final last year, but the home side prevailed 33-10 in Auckland.

By Alex Lowe WARREN Gatland is prepared for “one hell of a challenge” after being confirmed as the British and Irish Lions’ head coach for the 2013 tour of Australia. Gatland was the outstanding candidate for the post after leading Wales to the semifinals of the 2011 Rugby World Cup and last season’s Grand Slam triumph. The Lions will tackle Australia in a three-Test series as part of a 10-match tour, which opens with a fixture against the Barbarians in Hong Kong on June 1. “There is no question it will be one hell of a challenge,” Gatland said. “Playing in the southern hemisphere is one of rugby’s hardest challenges. The Lions came close in South Africa (in 2009) and our ambition is to win the series in 2013 - and I believe we have the players to do that.” Gatland, 48, will coach Wales in their autumn Tests against New Zealand and Australia but otherwise he will be seconded full-time to the Lions. Gatland is expected to confirm his full coaching team in October and it would be a surprise if the likes of Graham Rowntree and Shaun Edwards are not involved. All three were part of the 2009 Lions management in South Africa and received the backing of head coach

Gatland (centre) will coach Wales in their autumn Tests against New Zealand and Australia, but otherwise he will be seconded full-time to the Lions Ian McGeechan to carry the torch to Australia. “I am really honoured to have been asked to take the position of head coach,” Gatland added. “A Lions tour is unique, it is the ultimate career pinnacle for coaches and players. I want to ensure that we get the tour environment right so that we are hugely competitive and that our fans are proud of the team.” The Lions had initially planned to hold the announcement in April, but were forced into a delay after Gatland

broke both his heels in a fall at his house in Waikato. “It has been no secret that after the initial selection process, Warren was our preferred candidate,” tour manager Andy Irvine. “We naturally had to ensure he was fit to take up the post. Those concerns have now been addressed. Gatland coached Ireland for three years between 1998 and 2001 before taking charge at Wasps, where he won a hattrick of Premiership titles and the Heineken Cup. In 2006, he moved back to

New Zealand and coached his native Waikato to the New Zealand provincial title before Wales came calling. Gatland took charge of a Wales side that had just crashed out of the pool stages of the World Cup and he made an immediate impact, guiding them to the first of two Grand Slam titles during his tenure. The second was this year and it followed hot on the heels of Wales’ greatest World Cup performance since 1987, when they came agonisingly close to beating France to earn a place in the final.

Button ‘disappointed’ by Hamilton gaffe MCLAREN’S Jenson Button has criticised team mate Lewis Hamilton for revealing confidential car data on Twitter before Sunday’s Belgian Grand Prix in a gaffe that may have helped Formula One rivals. Button won the race at Spa but British newspapers yesterday reported his dismay at the incident. “We work so hard to improve the car and keep things like that secret and private. I didn’t want to see it on Twitter,” said Button, whose relationship with Hamilton has hitherto been unusually harmonious for title rivals. “It was the whole telemetry from qualifying. It wasn’t just the rear wing. I was very surprised and disappointed,” said the 2009 world champion, who added that the matter was also now behind him. “I think it’s done now. I don’t think it’s for me to be angry with Lewis. It’s not a personal thing,” he said. Hamilton had tweeted telemetry from his car and Button’s to show his nearly a million

followers the difference between a new rear wing being used by his team mate and the older one he had opted for in qualifying. The 2008 champion’s tweet was swiftly deleted on team orders but not before it had been widely seen and copied in the paddock. Teams guard such data with intense secrecy, in a sport with spies watching every garage, and former McLaren driver David Coulthard said in a column in the Daily Telegraph that the incident was “at best embarrassing”. Recalling how in his day there were people who would trawl through rivals’ refuse bins on the Monday after a race in search of just such information, the Red Bull consultant said the use of shredders and computer security had made such a leak even more valuable. “McLaren are playing down the sensitivity of the information but at the very least it has shown their rivals exactly where their lap time was won and lost with their new wing as opposed to the old one,” the Scot said.

McIlroy retains winning momentum RORY McIlroy was delighted to have maintained his winning momentum after overturning a three-shot final-round deficit on Monday night to squeeze past Louis Oosthuizen and win the Deutsche Bank Championship. The world number one’s final-round 67 gave him victory with a 20-under-par total of 264 - one stroke ahead of South Africa’s Oosthuizen, whose late surge was not enough, as he finished with a 71, and two clear of a resurgent Tiger Woods. McIlroy, who won the PGA Championship by a record eight shots three weeks ago, had made a blistering start to his final-day challenge with three birdies in his first four holes at TPC Boston in Norton, Massachusetts. The Northern Irishman was fortunate to pull back on the fifth hole when his bogey five beat a costly double-bogey by Oosthuizen, who fell further behind when McIlroy birdied the sixth and eighth.

A run of seven straight pars from ex Open champion Oosthuizen promised little before birdies on the 13th and 15th hauled him back within a single stroke. After both bogeyed the 17th, pars on the last were enough to give McIlroy the title. “Delighted to get my fifth win on the PGA Tour, third win this year, second win in the last three events,” said the 23-year-old, whose triumph lifted him to number one in the FedEx Cup standings and ensured he will have a shot at the $10-million prize at the Tour Championship in Atlanta later this month. “I just wanted to get off to a good solid start and maybe put Louis under a little bit of pressure. I was able to do that playing the first holes three under, and we both made a couple of mistakes on the fifth hole, but he made a six to my five, so I was able to take advantage of that a little bit. “There was a couple of shots on the back

nine I... well, I won’t take back now, but if I could have then, I would have. But I still managed to do enough, and as I said, delighted to get this win, delighted to go to number one in the FedEx Cup. It sets me up for a great next couple of weeks, so overall I’m just very pleased.” Woods carded a strong five-underpar final round of 66 to finish one shot behind Oosthuizen on 18 under - four strokes clear of Phil Mickelson, who also closed with a 66, and Ryder Cup hopeful Dustin Johnson (70). Woods said: “I’m pleased with the progress I made this week and really pleased with the way I rolled it. I hit so many good putts all week long, so that’s a positive.” Lee Westwood’s three-under-par 68 left him with an eight-under total of 276, while Luke Donald and Ernie Els both shot disappointing 70s to finish on fiveunder 279.

Love names four wild cards for US Ryder Cup team

In-form Bell untroubled by Pietersen issues IAN Bell is revelling in his role as Kevin Pietersen’s able replacement as a oneday international opener - but will happily leave it to others to decide whether his predecessor returns. Bell was promoted to open alongside England captain Alastair Cook this summer, after Pietersen announced his shock retirement from all international limited-overs cricket at the end of May. The Pietersen saga has brought many twists, turns and controversial standoffs since then - while Bell’s occupation at the top of the order has been a tale of scarcely interrupted success. After beginning his summer by defying the shock and pain of a deep cut to his chin from a throw-down in practice, to equal his career-best 126 in Southampton, Bell has added four more half-centuries in nine attempts to date. His latest contribution was a match-clinching 88 as England beat South Africa by six wickets at Lord’s on Sunday, and the 30-year-old is naturally delighted with the ongoing turn of events. “It’s nice to get the opportunity. The two new balls can be awkward in those early overs, especially when facing a bowler of (Dale) Steyn’s quality. “You will get the odd low score. But if you can get through that period, the ball stays nice and hard all the way through the middle of the innings - so you can try to cash in then.” It will be hard for even Pietersen, whose last two innings as an England opener were match-winning hundreds against Pakistan in Dubai, to oust Bell now, although the South Africa-born batsman has at least cleared one path, by last month reversing the decision to retire from the shorter formats. But Bell said: “I’ve not really thought about that. “It’s just about putting in a performance that helps us win a game.”

World number one McIlroy’s final-round 67 gave him the victory with a 20-under-par total of 264

Furyk, Stricker, Snedeker, Johnson picked

Wild cards: Snedeker is a fourth first-timer on the USA team, while Johnson is playing in the event for the second time. Veterans Furyk and Stricker are making their eighth and third appearances respectively

JIM Furyk, Steve Stricker, Brandt Snedeker and Dustin Johnson have been selected by Davis Love III to complete his United States Ryder Cup team. The quartet have were Love’s choices for his captain’s wild card picks for the match against Europe at Medinah, near Chicago, Illinois. Love said: “I can’t tell you how excited I am that these four guys are going to round our team out. I think we’re extremely deep this time, deeper than we’ve ever been.” The four players selected yesterday will join the eight already qualified via the points list for the match, which tees off on September 28. They were Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Zach Johnson, Bubba Watson, Matt Kuchar and rookies Jason Dufner, Keegan Bradley and Webb Simpson. Snedeker is a fourth firsttimer on the USA team, while Johnson is playing in the event for the second time after featuring in 2010’s defeat at Celtic Manor. Love told reporters yesterday: “We need hot putters and there really hasn’t been a hotter putter on tour since the Open (than Snedeker). “He brings a lot on and off the course and to the team room, he can pair with anyone, he’s a great asset.

“(Johnson is) the best athlete on the team and he’s perfect for Medinah. I said I was going to try to plug some holes we had, and I think he does that.” On veterans Furyk and Stricker, making their eighth and third appearances respectively, he added: “We also needed experience, Jim is one of the most consistent players on the tour and one of the most respected. “I’ve been in the team room with him five times, this will be his eighth team and he was 5-0 in his last international match (the 2011 President’s Cup). “(Stricker has) been the best player in my mind on tour the last five or six years. “He’s another guy that pairs well with anybody and another great putter, and he’s somebody I really trust on and off the course - he’s been a great asset to me already getting prepared for this day.” Stricker immediately set his stall out to play a major role in America regaining the trophy which Europe have won four of the last five times and six of the last eight, including a 14.5-13.5 success in Wales last time out. “We all know how much fun it is and how much pride we take in being part of this team, and to play for Davis is going to be a thrill,” he said. “I’m looking forward to it,

it’s a great time and it’s a tremendous lot of fun trying to get that one common goal and win that cup back. It’s what we’re all appearing for and I’m looking forward to it.” Furyk said: “I’ve had the opportunity to play in quite a few Ryder Cups but Davis has been a good friend, someone we all respect and look up to. “It’ll be fun playing for one of the guys that I’ve played a lot of years on the PGA Tour with. I’m looking forward to it, I couldn’t be more excited.” Snedeker promised to try to make Love “look like a genius” after his selection. “I’m so excited to be on this team,” said the 31-year-old, who led the Open after two rounds at Royal Lytham & St Annes. “It’s going to be such great experience for me to be in my first Ryder Cup, I’m looking forward to getting to Medinah and trying to make Davis look like he’s a genius and try to play as good as I possibly can.” Dustin Johnson added: “Obviously I’m very excited to be on the team, I’m really looking forward to it. “I’ve played well the last few weeks and made my case pretty solid and I’m really excited about it. “I played the Ryder Cup away and I’m looking forward to playing one on home soil.”

Australia skipper Clarke praises his side after wrapping up ODI win over Pakistan AUSTRALIA captain Michael Clarke praised his side after they bounced back from their humbling in England to claim a 2-1 one-day international series win over Pakistan in Sharjah on Monday night. The tourists defied sweltering heat and a four-pronged Pakistan spin attack to chase down a victory target

of 245 with three wickets in hand in the decider. Veteran Mike Hussey led the pursuit with a composed 65, while 23-year-old rookie Glenn Maxwell underlined his growing status with a fearless unbeaten 56, from 38 balls, to secure the win. Maxwell, who was one of the few Australian batsmen to dominate mystery

spinner Saeed Ajmal (three for 37), finished the game with a towering six after reaching his maiden half-century. It meant Australia immediately got back to winning ways following their 4-0 reverse against England this summer, which saw them relinquish top spot in the ODI rankings. “It’s very special, obviously after our

defeat in England,” Clarke said. “What the most pleasing thing is - the whole series was won by the whole team, it wasn’t one individual player that won tonight and that won us this series. It was a tough victory against a very good one-day team in Pakistan and you won’t get the smile off this face, that’s for sure.”

Sport Adorno hattrick seals APOEL win in Paralimni

Barton excited by Marseille challenge

By Nemanja Bjedov

JOEY Barton is hoping to follow in the footsteps of other British players to have enjoyed success in France, having completed his move to Marseille. The out-of-favour QPR midfielder switched nations on Friday on a season-long loan deal, and was introduced to the fans at the weekend. Never short of a word, Barton has already been fulfilling a number of media duties and yesterday expressed his desire to be the latest Brit to do well across the channel. Joe Cole had a successful season with Lille last year, while going back further, the likes of Chris Waddle, Trevor Steven and the colourful Republic of Ireland striker Tony Cascarino have all been big hits in Ligue 1. Speaking to the division`s official website, the 30-yearold said: “English players have done well in France. “Cole, Cascarino, Waddle, Steven.. French football is top-level football. There is the problem with the cultural differences and the languages and I will have to adapt.” The former Newcastle man believes that will be easy, though, owing to the football-mad nature of his new home. “Everybody supports the club in this city,” he added. “OM (Olympique Marseille) has an English feel to it in some ways, with the supporters and the atmosphere. “OM could be an English club. The club and the city are intrinsically linked. It`s not like London or Paris. Football is integral to the city. When the team wins, the whole city is happy.”

ALDO Adorno’s hat-trick inspired APOEL’s 5-0 victory over Enosis Neon Paralimni at the Tassos Markou Stadium in the city by the lake in one of the last two games of the national championship opening round Monday evening. Ivan Jovanovic’s men were desperate to win after crashing out of Europe and losing prized asset, Brazilian Ailton Almeida, to Russian top flight side Terek Grozny. “We scored three goals in the first half and it was very difficult for Enosis to come back after that,” said APOEL’s manager Jovanovic. “We continued to push forward until the final whistle and as a result scored two more goals and missed a couple of good chances. It is important that we managed to score five times and all goals were the product of a quality team display.” Adorno’s name was already twice on the score sheet within the first 25 minutes, and Manduca made it 3-0 from the penalty spot just before half time when Efstathios Aloneftis was brought down by Stavros Stathakis. Constantinos Charalambides replaced Mario Budimir after the interval and made it 4-0 in the 64th minute after a great cross by Aloneftis, while Adorno completed his hat-trick 10 minutes later to set up the final score. Elsewhere, AEL began their title defence with a 3-1 win over Doxa Katokopia away from home, with Matias Degra continuing his form from last season by saving yet another penalty - the Argentinean keeper has now saved eight consecutive penalties. “Degra’s save helped us psychologically and probably was the turning point of the game,” said AEL’s manager Pambos Christodoulou. “I believe from that point on we controlled the match and eventually got the deserved victory. This is our first game after being eliminated from the Champions League and it will definitely uplift our spirits. I congratulate my players’ effort and wish all the best to our opponents this season.”

PSG Sporting Director Leonardo said his side were more than satisfied by their current striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic (pictured)

PSG dismiss rumours of any Ronaldo move PARIS St Germain have distanced themselves from the possibility of a move for Real Madrid striker Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portugal captain whipped up a media storm at the weekend when he suggested he was unhappy with life with the Spanish champions, and a who’s who of Europe’s big-hitters were quickly touted as possible suitors. PSG were put alongside the two Manchester clubs and Chelsea as being interested, but according to sporting director Leonardo, his club are not looking to recruit the 27year-old. The former Brazil international also implied current forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic is a better player than Ronaldo, telling radio station RMC: “We’re very happy with our transfer market dealings. Many things are said about

Paris team touted alongside City, United and Chelsea as possibilities for Real striker PSG - too many, maybe. “Ronaldo is a Real Madrid player. We don’t talk about others teams’ players - that’s respect. “Ibrahimovic is the best striker in the world. So why hire Ronaldo? Zlatan is unique. When we talk about the best players, there is Ronaldo and Messi - but they are not strikers. The best striker, that’s Zlatan.” Talk of Ronaldo’s unrest first came to light after he barely celebrated his two goals for Madrid against Granada at the weekend.

Speaking to reporters afterwards, he said: “I didn’t celebrate the goals because I’m a little sad. The people inside the club know why it is. I’m not going to say anything more.” He has scored 150 goals in 149 matches for the club since moving from Manchester United. Meanwhile, Ronaldo’s Real team mate Alvaro Arbeloa has promised to support him, revealing yesterday that the squad knew nothing about the 27-year-old’s malaise prior to his announcement. Quoted in Marca, Arbeloa

told reporters at the Spanish national team’s base in Las Rozas: “He just needs more affection from everybody, I don’t know, that’s all we can give him. Everybody has the right to be sad, he’s a person just like anyone else. “He doesn’t share the problems of most Spanish people but it’s perfectly reasonable that he can be sad. “When Cristiano says (that he’s sad) then perhaps it makes more of an impression. “We’re all going to help him because he is our friend. “I hope the fans haven’t taken his words the wrong way. The media have great power and people are influenced by what they hear and read. “He knows that he’s with the best team and hopefully he’ll stay here until he retires. And if the fans keep believing in him, he’ll be remembered as a club icon. We will help him.”

Robin Van Persie happy to play ‘anywhere on the pitch’

Van Persie (right) has recently been overlooked by Van Gaal

ROBIN van Persie is prepared to “play anywhere” on the pitch when the Netherlands begin their World Cup qualification campaign this week. The Manchester United striker faces the prospect of starting on the substitutes’ bench after new boss Louis van Gaal overlooked him for their friendly defeat to Belgium last month. Van Gaal instead opted to start Klaas Jan Huntelaar, who scored in the 4-2 defeat, to further fuel the debate over which of the strikers was best for the Netherlands. Van Persie misfired during the Oranje’s disastrous Euro 2012, after top-

ping the goalscoring charts in the Barclays Premier League last term, to reinforce criticism he saves his best for his club. The 29-year-old has revealed he has since spoken to Van Gaal about his place but, despite netting a hat-trick for new club United against Southampton at the weekend, he remains unsure whether he will get his chance against Turkey and Hungary over the next week. “I’m just available,” he told reporters when asked where he was likely to play. “It does not matter what I think. Those are questions for the coach. I am available for any position.”

Asked about his discussion with Van Gaal, he added: “It was a good talk.” Despite the possibility of being left out Van Persie, who has scored 29 goals for the Oranje, said he would always remain committed to his country. “I still find it an honour to be here,” he was reported as saying in AD Sportwereld. “That will not really change. Even if I will not play the next matches.” The Netherlands begin the road to Brazil 2012 with a home match against Turkey in Amsterdam on Friday before travelling to meet Hungary four days later.

‘First goal is vital,’says England’s Defoe

Defoe is primed for a tough match against Moldova

ENGLAND striker Jermain Defoe is expecting a tough match against Moldova and believes the first goal will be vital. The Three Lions begin their 2014 World Cup qualifying campaign this Friday and the Spurs forward has warned his teammates not to take the hosts lightly. “At this level every game is difficult,” he said. “They will make it hard and sit behind the ball and try to frustrate us. “I have played in a number of games against the so-called smaller countries and it’s difficult to get the first goal. “It will be a difficult game, when we get the first goal we can go and get the second.” England will be without Wayne Rooney for the clash with reports suggesting Roy Hodgson could elect to play just one striker. “I have been playing the lone striker for my club and I have enjoyed it,” Defoe said. “To be honest playing with good players it is not really a problem if people get close. “It we get to control the game in mid-

field when we get a chance we have to take it.” Defoe remains confident his new club manager, Andre Villas-Boas, will lead Spurs to success despite failing to oversee a league victory in three attempts so far.

‘AVB NEEDS TIME’ “Obviously as a player when you join a new club it takes a while and when a new manager comes in it takes time, “ he added. “We’ve got a good squad, a strong squad, and I think we’ll be fine. “It’s only normal that a new manager comes in with new ideas and a new formation. “We’re playing a different style this year. It’s going to take time but when we adapt it will be fine.” The former West Ham striker ended speculation linking him with a move away White Hart Lane in the transfer window by agreeing a new three-year deal.

“I’m a lot more settled as a player,” he added. “You’re not sure what’s going on, you could get called to say that a fee’s been agreed for you to move elsewhere. “I feel a lot more settled and I’m just getting on with playing well for my club. “When you know you’ve actually signed a contract then you can focus and get down to work. “It feels like it’s a new start for everyone and when you do get a start you have to impress the manager to stay in the team.” Turning his attentions back to the England’s qualifiers Defoe said he would not take Moldova lightly, adding: “I think it will be a difficult game. “You look at the fixtures and some might think it should be an easy game. It’s important to be professional and patient and it helps when you get an early goal. “It’s going to be difficult and the first 20 minutes will be really important. They’re two big games and if we can win them it will be good for everyone.”

I’ve lost respect for Fergie says disgruntled Berbatov Embittered by treatment at United in final season DIMITAR Berbatov said he had lost respect for Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson over the treatment he received during his final season with the club. The Bulgarian striker last week joined Fulham in a deal worth a reported £5 million after falling out of favour at Old Trafford. The 31-year-old cost the Red Devils £30.75 million in 2008 and was the Premier League’s top scorer in 2010-11 but made just 12 league appearances last term. The beginning of the end appeared to come when he was left out of the matchday squad completely for the 2011 Champions League final against Barcelona. Speaking at a press conference in Sofia, Berbatov said: “I don’t think I deserved such treatment at United - not playing in the last year. “I went more than 10, probably 15, times to ask the coach if they need me. “And every time I was told that I’m an important player and should not leave, but then again I was not in the team. “Maybe I should’ve gone when he (Ferguson) left me out of the squad for the Cham-

pions League final. “I know he’s the boss, but he has lost, to some extent, my respect because of the way he treated me.” Berbatov found himself below Wayne Rooney, Javier Hernandez and Danny Welbeck in the Old Trafford pecking order last season and this summer’s arrivals of Robin van Persie and Shinji Kagawa threatened his place further. The former Tottenham man

felt he was the victim of a decision by Ferguson to play with a different style. He said: “He tried to explain to me that the team will be using a more direct style, with more speed. “But I’ve never been among the fastest players. I like to hold the ball - this is my style. “I found it hard to accept his decision - I still have my dignity. I scored many goals, I won the league two times,

and I was the league top scorer, so it’s not bad. “I’ll have no problems playing against United as this already happened in my career. But there’s no point to look back again. “I said goodbye to the people who deserve it. I couldn’t say goodbye to Ferguson.” Berbatov’s move to Fulham was not without controversy as he angered Fiorentina by turning down the chance to

join them and then snubbed Juventus. The forward defended his position, saying: “I’ve never personally told them, ‘Yes, I’ll play for you’. “It’s not my problem that someone is disappointed. After all, I choose where to play and be happy.” Berbatov’s agent Emil Danchev also revealed Spurs made a last-ditch attempt to re-sign their former player.

West Ham hopeful of keeping Carroll WEST Ham are hopeful of keeping on-loan striker Andy Carroll although his parent club Liverpool are believed to have an option to recall him in January. The 23-year-old England international moved to Upton Park on a season-long loan deal last week. Liverpool paid £35million for Carroll in January 2011 but the former Newcastle forward struggled for form at Anfield. He has now moved to West Ham and impressed on his debut against Fulham on Saturday before suffering a hamstring injury. Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers had hoped to sign a new forward before the transfer window closed but no deals materialised, sparking suggestions he could be forced to recall Carroll. It is understood Liverpool can cancel the loan agreement in January, but West Ham co-owner David Gold took to Twitter to say he wants Carroll to stay for the entire campaign. His Tweet read: “The exact terms of Carroll’s year-long loan deal are subject to a confidentiality agreement but we are hopeful he will be with us the whole season.” Meanwhile, Rodgers has been linked with a host of free agents to fill the void left by Carroll’s departure. Although a move for former Anfield hero Michael Owen now appears to be a nonstarter, rumours still persist the likes of Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka could return to the Premier League.

Meireles says Fenerbahce as big a club as Chelsea after completing move to Turkish giants RAUL Meireles declared Fenerbahce to be as big a club as Chelsea and Liverpool after completing his move to the Turkish giants. Meireles on Monday night became the latest summer departure from Stamford Bridge, with the Portugal midfielder signing a fouryear deal to ply his trade in Istanbul.

And the former Liverpool star immediately insisted he had not taken a step down in his career. “I can’t wait to get started - Fenerbahce is as big a club as Chelsea, Liverpool and Porto,” Meireles told FB TV, revealing former Anfield team-mate Dirk Kuyt had played a part in the

pair being reunited in Turkey. “I had a great season playing at Liverpool with Kuyt. He told me about Fenerbahce and encouraged me to make the move. “I have friends playing in Turkey. Kuyt has told me on several occasions that Istanbul is a beautiful city, I’m very excited about the pros-

pect of playing here.” The 29-year-old, who reportedly cost £8million just a year after joining Chelsea for £12million, added: “Fenerbahce are a big club, everybody knows what kind of history the club has. “I’m a team player, I love to win but what’s more important is that the team wins.”

Azarenka knocks out champion Stosur

The world number one brought Stosur’s title defence to an end with a 6-1 4-6 7-6 (7/5) victory last night

WORLD number one Victoria Azarenka brought Sam Stosur’s US Open title defence to an end in an excellent women’s singles quarter-final at Flushing Meadows. Stosur, who stunned Serena Williams in the final last year, fought back impressively after a poor first set but was edged out in the final tie-break, with Azarenka winning 6-1 4-6 7-6 (7/5) to reach her first US Open semi-final. The top seed has looked back to the form that helped her to 26 wins in a row at the start of the season, including her first grand slam title at the Australian Open. She had dropped only 10 games on her way to the last eight and was facing a player she had not so much as dropped a set against in six previous meetings. Stosur made the worst possible start by dropping her serve and was 3-0 down when a very heavy rain shower forced the players off court for more than an hour. The Australian at least got herself on the board on the resumption but was

making too many unforced errors and a backhand drilled well over the baseline handed the set to Azarenka. Stosur began the second set well, breaking her opponent’s serve for the first time and, although the Belarusian hit straight back, it was a much more even contest now.

HEAVY PRESSURE Indeed, it was the seventh seed who gained the advantage again in the seventh game with another break and this time she held on despite heavy pressure from Azarenka. It was an impressive effort from Stosur, who is not known as the toughest mentally, and twice she hit back after being broken in the third. Azarenka was throwing everything at her opponent but she refused to buckle, and Stosur even had a break point at 5-5 only for the top seed to come up with an ace. The match was decided on a tie-break, and Stosur made a terrible start, losing the first four points. She recovered

three straight away, and they were back on serve when Azarenka betrayed her nerves with a massive double fault to make it 5-4. A drop shot gave her the first match point, though, and she took it when a forehand that landed on the baseline proved too good for Stosur. It was the first time for five years that a women’s match in the quarter-finals or later had been decided by a tiebreak, with Azarenka finally prevailing after two hours and 23 minutes. The 23-year-old said: “I think we both showed some excellent tennis. You could feel the pressure all the time. We really both gave it our all, fought really hard, kept making each other run like crazy.” The result means Azarenka is guaranteed to be world number one at the end of the tournament, but she added: “I don’t want to stop yet.” In the day’s other quarter-final in the women’s competition, and at the time of going to press, third seed Maria Sharapova of Russia was set to take on 11th seed Marion Bartoli of France.

Smooth progress for Murray Raonic’s monster serves fail to halt Scot By Eleanor Crooks

A

ndy Murray had his timing spot on as he gave rising star Milos Raonic a lesson to ease through to the quarter-finals of the US Open. The third seed had been anything but comfortable in a gruelling third-round victory over Feliciano Lopez on Saturday, but things could not have been more different on Monday night. Murray was in control throughout the whole match, leaving Raonic shaking his head at the excellence and variety of the Scot’s play, and he did not face a single break point in a 6-4 6-4 6-2 triumph. And instead of the blazing hot conditions that had made the Lopez match so tough, it was cool and damp, with the match brought forward because of the threat of rain. Murray had only just walked off the court after taking exactly two hours to wrap up victory when the rain began to fall, which was fitting on a night when it seemed the Scot could do nothing wrong. He said: “It just started raining just now, so it was perfect timing to finish. “When we got told the match was getting moved a bit earlier, it wasn’t so

Murray (right) was in control throughout the whole match, leaving Raonic (left) shaking his head at the excellence and variety of the Scot’s play, and he did not face a single break point in a 6-4 6-4 6-2 triumph much the match getting earlier that was hard - it’s knowing there is possibly going to be showers and stops, which can disrupt the rhythm of the match and can make it tough, especially when you’re playing against someone with as big a serve as him. “It’s tough to get into a rhythm when there isn’t stops in the match. I was glad I managed to get the match done before the rain came.” At 21, Raonic is closing in fast on the top 10 and his huge serve and forehand make him a threat to even the game’s best players. He had demolished James Blake in the previous round and it was partly because of the danger posed by the

young Canadian that Murray made sure his concentration never wavered. “I knew going into the match that I was going to have to return well,” the third seed said. “And then I also had to stay extremely focused and give as few points as possible on my serve away. “He was always going to come up with some big returns or come to the net a couple of times, get me in tough positions on my serve. “But I passed really well tonight when I needed to. I kind of made him back away from the net. I had to play extremely solid, and I did that.” Raonic beat Murray in their only previous meeting

on clay earlier this season and has pushed Roger Federer very hard in all their three matches. The 21-year-old was left almost in awe of Murray’s performance, and he told the Scot so when they shook hands at the net. Raonic said: “He said, ‘Sorry, I got lucky a few times.’ I said, ‘Don’t be sorry - it was

simply amazing. Keep it up and you’ll do well’. “Considering what I was able to put into the match, to have somebody that took me out of it and neutralised me and took it even one step further... I haven’t really felt in that situation too much when I feel like I’m doing things well.” Raonic had served 89 aces

in his first three matches - substantially more than anyone else in the tournament - and in the first few games Murray struggled to get a racquet on the ball. But the 25-year-old is a master at working opponents out and, after forcing Raonic to save break points in the seventh game, he struck in the ninth with the cutest of drop shots. From there, Murray simply got better and better, breaking once in the second set and twice in the third to reach the quarter-finals at an eighth straight grand slam tournament, where he will meet Croatia’s Marin Cilic. Murray’s tally of 31 winners and 12 unforced errors was a reflection of his quality, while he was delighted to deny Raonic any chance of a break. “On this surface, against a big hitter like him, normally you’ll have to save some break points,” Murray added. “But I served really smart today, did a good job behind my serve. “I did the same at the Olympics. I didn’t get broken the last three matches I played there. “It’s really important to serve well the deeper you go in the tournament. It conserves a lot of energy. “The first round I served really badly, so there were long baseline rallies. It’s physically tiring when you’re serving at 29 per cent or whatever I was serving at in the first match. So I was happy with that.”
