D23 Feature Motocross Double points paying event draws a nice crowd and plenty of great action! Staples, Minnesota - Sept 10 By Angela John, Photos by Paul Olson

250C class start; #178 Kole Lemcke and #38 Aaron Boatman fight for early positioning.

M

oto City Raceway in Staples hosted the first of two District 23 special season-end Feature events, the northern edition. The special Feature races in the 2017 MX championship series are single dates, one North and one South that consist of one day of racing with a two moto format. Each moto counts as a single race and is awarded points accordingly, essentially a double points paying day. This makes these two races incredibly important to racers who seek the class title as there is a maximum of fifty points available each weekend. The intent being to draw class leaders from North and South together for head to head competition, ultimately deciding who the true motocross state champion is for the season. The Kadlec family, owners and operators of Moto City Raceway were there in full force. Sons Spence and Gavin helping Dale with the track and the littlest Kadlec, Ava helping mom Amber and grandma Sharon in the office. The extra help was much needed as the Staples facility was filled to the brim with campers and competitors. A beautiful day was just what the racers wanted. A strong wind from the south brought extra warmth and some extra challenges when tackling a few of the jumps. Unfazed by the heat and wind the +50 riders showed up in full force with an astonishing sixteen entries taking the gate for moto one. With steely gazes focused on the first turn the racers rushed together at break neck speed with #45 Dave Spizman taking the holeshot. Tim Bernloehr was right behind Spizman with John Cram in third. 6

CYCLE USA, October 2017

close the soft dirt of a corner slowed Bernloehr enough for Spizman to again regain the lead and take the win as Cram finished in third. The second moto was just as close but Bernloehr dominated from the holeshot to the finish. Spizman attempted every smooth move he knew throughout each lap as he and Bernloehr set a pace that most of the pack couldn’t maintain. Fast-n-furious and +50 these two gave their all and the crowd loved it! Cram again finished third as Dale Ackerman stepped it up in this moto for fourth after a first moto seventh... it was good for fourth overall ahead of Mark Deal (5-6) and Rod Perala (4-7). Another crowd drawing race came from the Open A riders. Packed with some of the district’s fastest racers no one wanted to miss the gate drop. With holeshot money on the line all the riders were hungry for cash and glory. Nick Jackson was first to the corner but Clay Olson quickly took the lead with Austin Kienast hot Trisha Olson went 2-3 in the on their tails. Joe Perron, with Women’s class for second overall.

Throughout the first two laps Bernloehr looked for any alternative line but Spizman was guarding well. Then on the third lap Bernloehr took him on the inside for the lead. Relentlessly in pursuit Spizman out jumped Bernloehr to retrieve the lead but Bernloehr out jumped him on the next table top. With Spizman

a less than stellar start worked throughout the first two laps to move up to third as he passed Kienast. Eyes on his competitor and close friend Jackson, Perron aggressively overtook him for second leaving only Olson in front of him. Perron passed Olson as Kienast slipped ahead of Jackson while Olson faded back and Ryder Hanninen moved up. With a sizeable lead Perron finished first while Kienast and Hanninen filled the top three ahead of Jackson. Moto number two’s holeshot went to Kienast who was immediately challenged by Perron, Olson and Jackson. Perron pressuring Kienast moved to the inside then side-by-side they cleared the triple with Perron pulling ahead on the landing. The battle for third then became where all attention was focused as Olson and Jackson sailed the triple and at remarkable speed slid through the banked sweeper. Jackson eventually got his pass on Olson but not before some spectator pleasing bar to bar racing. Perron finished ahead of Kienast as Jackson sailed in for third. The real winners today were the spectators. Each moto was filled with great head to head racing, not just at the front of the pack but throughout. Each position was valiantly fought for as North and South met their matches and battled for supremacy. Some really cool awards and possibly the claim to the AMA D23 State Motocross Championship added even more to the event. Megacross Still Wide Open Mendota, Illinois - September 9 By Josh Rud, Shift One Photography

egacross was underway once again in early September with some great racing action out there tonight. The weather was certainly starting to tell some tales of the summer coming to a close. With some cloud cover and the temperatures on the low side, no maintenance was needed as the track shaped up with quite a few good options for passing. It made for some great racing with a lot of great battles through-out the night. One of those great races tonight was in the 125cc class. getting around Sienkiewicz as Schnowske took the win ahead of Ward. Even more action was delivered in 85Sr as the riders pushed into the first turn. Lucas Geistler was out front after the first turn with Brett Aimone and Ian Murphy keeping it tight through the start. It wasn’t long before Brandon Bollino got a good run through the table tops and moved into third while Geistler was already making a gap on the field. Bollino was on the grind out there moving his Kawasaki into second with Aimone now holding off the pack in the third position. The fight continued through the last lap and they came across the line with Geistler taking the win followed by Bollino and Aimone to finish up another great race this evening. Later in the evening the Women’s class was on the line ready to get out on the track as the weather was getting cooler by the minute. They left the line with Zoe Erdman jumping out front out of the first turn. Kyleigh McLaughlin and Amber Logeland were running close and

Megacross was a great show tonight and the track was really nice. I talked with several riders that were all really excited about how the lines were forming; it left a lot of passing opportunities. With the season coming to a close and the weather starting to make us all aware it will be over soon things couldn’t be going better. With one race left out at Megacross it will surely be a great night as everyone will be out trying to get in those last rides before the winter sneaks up out of nowhere.

25 Years of Vet Racing The Aztalan Cycle Club hosts the 25th Annual Dirty Old Blasters race. Lake Mills, Wisconsin - September 9 The Aztalan Cycle Club

T

he average age of the riders, along with some of the bikes drastically increased on this perfect Saturday in early September. This was day one of a rare double-header weekend at the popular Lake Mills facility... it was huge as it marked the 25th anniversary of the Mike Gaborsky Dirty Old Blaster Vet Race held here by the Aztalan Cycle Club. The long running annual event has always been presented with great pride by the members. They always pour even more effort than usual into this event... and it always shows, as it did today. Following a great open practice for the adult riders on Friday, tilling, watering and prep delivered what quickly turned into a mint track on Saturday... enjoyed by all. Twenty classes of fun, competitive racing where the largest group of the day was made up of riders +50 in age. The +55 rider class had sixteen riders clear the first turn, all led by D16 longtime regular Jeff McLain. Wayne Welzien was running in second with Iowa’s Rick Munson already glued to his rear fender. By the time they hit the plateau Mike Boyden was in fourth ahead of Tim Boblin. The order held to the fourth lap when Boblin took over fourth

and Jeff Ramsay found his way up to fifth ahead of Boyden. McLain opened a safe lead out front and Welzien had a couple bikes lengths on Munson during the final lap. McLain left no doubt of his intentions as he grabbed another good start in the second moto, then going on to the win. Welzien once again tangled with Munson through the first couple laps before Munson grabbed second for good. Boblin stepped it up late in the moto to get around Welzien for third. Welzien’s consistency paid off in the overall as his 2-4 was still good for third overall behind Munson. After locking down the Glowacki and Gayle Gaborsky enjoy catching up before overall, McLain was all Daniel Daniel hits the track on his 1981 Husqvarna, a bike he bought smiles. “I had another after Mike Gaborsky raced it... still pridefully running the famous good start and that really #42 on it. The track is super class last year and it is great to be out tacky so you can just leave it all out there. today.” Asked what got him here today, Anyone that hasn’t been here recently is he chuckled and said, “I’ve never done missing out as it is a fantastic place to the plateau here and wanted to cross it off ride. terday and then again all day today. I’d like to send a big thank you out to my wife Janis for all her support.” The +40A class delivered a good race as Jeff Bennett led a tight pack including Rodney VanEperen, Mark Wright and Frank Weiss early on. By the third lap it had changed up with VanEperen all alone out front and Bennett working hard to hold off Weiss. Bennett pulled it off for second as Wright finished fourth ahead of Joe Schuster and Troy Kalina. For the second moto, VanEperen was a no show, having fallen in another class. At the start Bennett quickly jumped to the front and worked to get away from Wright and Weiss. Wright ended up not finishing as Weiss took over second ahead of Kalina.

#620 Mike Halder and Petros Agvernois in +50B/C.

Sportland 2 rider Bennett after scoring the second moto win and overall, “It was a little sloppy this morning but the track is great now. I got a little lucky with the first moto winner not being able to race this moto, but I still rode hard to get the win and had a lot of fun out there.” +40B had Casey Kloepping lead the seventeen rider class through the first turn in moto one. Nipping at his heals hard right away, Myles Saigh had his Yamaha looking for another gear. By mid-moto Saigh had his efforts pay off, now leading Justin Ernst and Kloepping. As those three set sail out front, Shadrach Simmons climbed up to fourth ahead of Lee Peterson. The excitement of the day continued in the second moto as the top three were right back at it, this time with Kloepping out

front ahead of Saigh and Ernst. Kloepping did all he could by grabbing the win... still he needed some help from behind to have a shot at the overall - help that never came as Saigh held strong for second, going 1-2 for the overall ahead of Kloepping (3-1). Saigh was in a rush after finishing the moto, having to line up for yet another class... “I got into second and having another moto right after I just conserved some energy knowing I still had the overall. It’s been a great day so far so hopefully it continues.” He went on to finish fifth overall in the +35 class as well. It was cool seeing the +60 class have fourteen riders testing themselves on the now mint track. Out front were a couple of riders that took on the younger crowd earlier and now had that valuable extra track time. Rick Munson and Wayne Welzien were locked in a fight for the

win through the first three laps. Also having a classic battle, Gary Behrens, Harold Gooch and Michael Zimmerman were flipping positions to see who could end up in third. Welzien made a move into the lead through the sand corner only to give it back before the end of the fourth lap. On the same lap, Zimmerman used that same line to pass Gooch for fourth, setting the final order out front in a race that went right down to the checkers. Welzien saved his best for the end of the day, when it mattered most. After his runner-up finish to Munson, he needed a win and got it in moto two - taking the overall as well. Munson finished second while Zimmerman also improved on his first moto for third - good for third overall ahead of Behrens (3-4). +35B/C delivered a fun first moto where the top five were fender to fender all moto, swapping spots often. Jeremy Braund started out front to eventually finish fourth. Justin Ernst took his turn in the lead early, then Casey Kloepping took over for good as Kyle Vanderwerff worked up from mid pack to claim third. Justin Bryant was in the mix for a fifth place at the end, with a dozen riders back just a bit. In the second moto Braund again had a great start to lead everyone onto the track. Vanderwerff was in second, then quickly took over out front. First moto winner Kloepping was a ways back, but fought his way into third by the end of the second lap. The overall was on the line

for Kloepping if he could get around Braund. He caught him, but wasn’t able to make a pass, settling for third. JR Contraptions backed Vanderwerff got his overall (3-1), “I got a lot better start in this moto in second place compared to back in sixth earlier. I got lucky in all this as the first moto winner finished third so I got the overall. This Vet

race is awesome and they really did a great job on the track again today.” A crowd favorite of the day... the Dual Shock class brought out some really classic old bikes and a typically great group of riders. When the thirteen riders were done putting in their two motos, Germantown’s Tommy Gerlach Jr had swept both motos on his pristine 1980 Yamaha YZ250. “I’ve won this class the last two years and was hoping to

I love riding the Vintage bikes.” Jon Schubert finished both motos in second on a borrowed 1978 Harley Davidson 250MX while Jim Leach fought his way up in both motos to go 3-4 for third overall. While these guys show up to race, it’s just as much about who they are here with and what old bikes they decide to ride. They set a perfect example of having fun, and remind us of that every time we see them on the track. Schubert, “This is an excellent event and for like twenty years or so we’ve been part of it on these old dual shock bikes. Its just great to get these old bikes out of the garages and have some fun on them. The crowd really enjoys it as well.” Schubert continued... “the show with these is really about the bikes and not who’s riding them, so how we finish isn’t that important.” The day was a success all around! Fantasy Moto’s Battle of WI Tigerton, Wisconsin - August 20 By Doug Forstner, Photos by Kaila Forstner

S

cott Biese and the Fantasy Moto crew have been promoting races since the 1990’s and when Scott came up with the idea to create a premier AMA race in Wisconsin to showcase talents in both Supercross and Motocross, some were skeptical at first. But this year he hosted the third annual Battle of Wisconsin in Tigerton WI and with his hard work and never say die attitude, this event will continue to grow and the possibilities are endless. The idea is to run a supercross on Saturday night and then a motocross on Sunday, combining the overall scores from both to determine an overall champion. With over 500 entries between the days I would say he is on his way. This year Mother Nature cooperated and dumped a bunch of water on both tracks on Wednesday and Thursday prior to the event, putting a bunch of moisture in the soil for the weekend. The sun came out for the rest of the weekend and people poured through the gates. Saturday, practice started in the afternoon with heat races to determine main events in each class. The mains started right about the time the sun was setting bringing some excellent racing under the lights. The supercross track this year was widened and adjusted for “all” the riders. It was a safe basic track that allowed beginners to race without much problem yet test the moxy of the experts. After each main the top three riders were brought up onto the podium for interviews and celebrations. “It’s neat to give the riders the chance to feel like rock stars in front of the fans and talk about the race,” said Scotty Biese. The kids get into it and I even saw one little ripper in the Peewee class throw his goggles into the crowd. Following Sunday, the overall winner of each class was going to get a Championship hatchet along with a number one plate and a bottle of bubbly along with sponsor goodies. The highly anticipated first moto off the gate on Sunday morning was 250C class, the largest of the day. It was Ezra Grau-

mann from Medford, WI on his trusty steed first to the turn. He was followed by Kendall Biever, Ry Baumann and the rest of the pack. At the end of lap two, Baumann made a pass into second and set his sights on Graumann. Gabe Rasmussen and Tristan Alloway were running inside top five. At the checkers it was Graumann with the win followed by Baumann, Rasmussen, Biever and Alloway. Moto two again saw Graumann quickly get into the lead followed by Baumann. This time Blain Youngthunder had a good start and was running inside top five with Rasmussen and Alloway. Tristan Woolf was able to also get a good start and was running just behind the leaders. On the first lap, by the new wall jump before you hit the area with the rollers, a bottleneck occurred

as a bunch of riders got tied up with one rider going down causing a big melee. On lap two, Alloway was running third followed by Rasmussen and Woolf. Behind these riders was a huge freight train of riders trying to get into the top five. On the white flag lap, Rasmussen made a pass on Alloway to move into the third, then at the checkers, it was Graumann who was your 250C champion as he also claimed the overall Battle of Wisconsin hatchet for the class. Baumann finished in that runner up spot ahead of Rasmussen. 2 Stroke B/C was another stacked class

with a bunch of fast kids from the Midwest. First moto it was DJ Gritzmacher taking matters into his own hands riding his KTM into the lead. Brandon Martyniak was giving chase followed by Kole Olson and Kenny Gruber. Nick Randrup and Baumann had a good battle going but late in the moto it was Haiden Waelchli who made a bunch of passes and ended up third behind Gritzmacher and Martyniak. Moto two again saw Gritzmacher out front with Martyniak keeping him honest. This time Olson and Randrup battled over the third sport throughout the moto while Gruber and Baumann had a

match going for fifth. At the checkers it was Gritzmacher with the overall followed by Martyniak, Olson, Randrup and Gruber rounding out the top five. The Women’s class has a good following in Wisconsin and this class has been pretty solid with talent the past couple years. Added to this race was the talent out of Iowa, Linkin Sarauer. Add to the mix Kirsten Raemisch fresh out of retirement to come and race at the Battle and these two put on a show. Saturday night saw Raemisch on top with the supercross win, but you could see the look in Sarauer’s eye that she was going to throw down on the motocross track. Raemisch pulled the holeshot in moto one and Sarauer quickly followed looking for an opportunity to pass. Sarauer shadowed Raemisch early, then on lap three made the pass for the lead in the sand rollers. At the checkers it was Sarauer, Raemisch, Bryanne Wolf, Sierra Heindl and Brooke Hansen rounding out the top five. In moto two we got to see Raemisch and Sarauer out front again with a blistering pace. They quickly pulled away from the field but behind them Hansen, Wolf and Heindl were racing hard. At the checkers it was Sarauer with the overall ahead of Raemisch, Wolf, Heindl, and Hansen. The future of motocross is in good hands after watching 250B class. Bryce Hansen and Carter Biese were the top dogs in this class with lap times equivalent to the A class boys. Carter Biese, fresh off his first National Championship was on his home track and looking to show everyone he is the real deal. Unfortunately in moto one he had some issues and ended up in fourth place behind Hansen who won, Kaleb DeKeyrel from Minnesota in second and Jonah Giestler who made the trek up from Illinois. Brady Bill rounded out the top five. Moto two, Biese made sure to put his Husqvarna on the top spot with a solid moto victory over Hansen. DeKeyrel was third followed by Bill and Marco Gravedoni who rounded out the top five. Hansen was your 250B champion with his 1-2 moto scores. Schoolboy 1 was again packed with kids from first to last who were gunning for the championship. Biese was your first moto winner ahead of Hansen, Mar-

tyniak, Gravedoni, and Waelchli. In moto two, Hansen turned up the heat and came away with the victory to go 2-1 and garner another win. Wyatt Liebeck who also had a good run this summer at Lorretta Lynns, showed up the Battle of Wisconsin and took home three victories, winning 85cc 9-13, 85cc 12-15 and Supermini. He also was awarded the 2017 Youth Battle Commander Trophy. The Hansen brothers each came away with a pair of wins with Bryce taking Open B and Schoolboy. Brother Blake took home 250 and Open A. Ezra Graumann home took home 250C and Open C and was your 2017 Amateur Battle Commander. Valley’s UP Double Header Crystal Falls, Michigan - August 26/ 27 by Jeri Nyberg

Y

ou know summer is drawing to a close when you start heading to tracks for their last races of the season. Valley Raceway ended their summer with a double header and as far as weather goes, you couldn’t have asked for two more opposite days. That is, unless it had snowed and it’s been known to do that in Crystal Falls on a race weekend. A well-groomed track, the Bacco Construction truck laying down the water (along with mother nature Sunday) and something new the Valley Raceway scene; the Midnight Blue BBQ food truck rustling up delicious food made for an allaround great weekend. Riders into the triple digits made for lots of bar banging on Saturday and those who toughed it out in Sunday’s rain got a good old fashioned and fun mud bath to end their weekend. Saturday’s practice started out with a thick layer of fog - then as it lifted the scene was set for a great day of racing. With a smooth running program, fifteen races were able to be completed before the clouds and rain rolled in at the end of the afternoon. Open B took to the track and Jacob Lepak put his Yamaha out front for an early lead with Cody Warren and Jake Denison rounding out the top three. As the laps went on, the real battle was over fourth place between John Adams and Brock Noreen. For the first three laps the two ran within feet of each other until Noreen was able to get around Adams on the fourth lap. Noreen then set his sights on Denison and was able to get right next to him in the final corner, but Denison held on to third to end the moto. Moto two started with Lepak and Warren out front again. This time Noreen was able to get the jump out of the gate 22

and hold third place throughout the moto. Adams and Denison ran close together in the beginning of the race until Adams started to pull away. The riders held their positions and comfortably finished the moto in that order. Noreen’s 4-3 finishes set him up third overall and Denison managed 3-5 for fourth. Adams rounded out the top five. The +40 classes were also laying down some fast laps. As Darin Dionne and Troy Lipka traded positions in the +40A

Rounding out the top five was Brad Baumann. In moto two, Bickel and Vanvreede got themselves out front again while Croschere had to work his way up again. Croschere passed Vanvreede up the sand hill and then got around Bickel by sweeping an outside corner just before reaching the spectator section. On the second lap Verner caught and went around Vanvreede and into third. The top five finished just as they had in moto one.

Cody Warren blasting a sand berm while on his way to second place in Open B.

class, the +40B/C riders were swapping positions also. In moto one, Timothy Vanvreede got the jump out of the gate with Dave Bickel and Cory Croschere behind him. Bickel was able to get around Vanvreede through the first corner and Croschere made the pass coming up the deep, rutted sand on the infamous sand hill. As the top two pulled started to pull away, Patrick Verner was creeping closer to Vanvreede. Croschere was able to make another pass up the sand hill to take the lead and then hold it for the rest of the moto. Verner made the pass on Vanvreede giving him third place.

Sunday morning everyone awoke to the pitter patter of rain drops on camper roofs. Those who stayed and braved the rain ran shortened motos will tell you, it was muddy! Many grabbed their umbrellas, rain coats and boots to watch the battles in the mud and it was defiantly worth it. PeeWee Jr and Sr were first up to take on the mud. Colton Berray made it looks like a walk in the park as he flew around the shortened track. Even Walker Davis on his Honda 50 made all his laps in 50Jr. In the second moto, Paityn Fritchen pulled a big holeshot until the mud got

the best of her on the face of the step up and Berray was able to get around her for the overall. Davis and Nolan Fritchen made up the top two in 50Jr. Even though each class only had a handful of riders, it was still exciting to watch everyone make their way through the mud and puddles. Even with the rain on Sunday, Valley Raceway put on a fun event and what’s the summer without at least one good mud race?

Ladies Shine at Cambridge Cambridge, Minnesota - August 27 by Samantha Laderer

L

et’s all face it, motocross isn’t just for the boys. Thousands of women across not only the United States, but the world ride and race a form of motocross. Whether it’s a dirt bike or quad, women’s numbers are going up. This was obvious at Cambridge MX when thirteen total ladies lined the gates on various sizes of quads. Of those ladies was Taven Woodie, in the Youth 14-17 class. Woodie, who is originally from the lovely state of Wyoming not only races quads but will be entering her first year in Pro Am Women’s Snowcross. At only the age of 14, you know she has no fear and is going somewhere. You can see this on the track because she is by far the boy’s biggest competition. Kaden Woodie leading in the Open B class In her first moto of the day, she Brooks were right behind her, but not for pulled the holeshot like often before on long. Woodie right away began creating all the boys. Carson Hjelman and Riley

a gap behind. Mid second lap she struck bad luck and stalled out in a corner. Brooks, who was running in second got around her, as well as Hjelman. She soon got her quad up and running. On the last lap she caught Hjelman but wasn’t able to find a good line and finished in third. “The track was getting rough, but it was super fun when you found the right lines,” said Woodie. In the second moto, Woodie did it again and pulled the holeshot. This time Montray Thomas running in second. Woodie began pulling away and Thomas was then left to battle with Brooks and Hjelman. This time Brooks had mechanical issues allowing the rest of the pack to get around. Thomas and Hjelman continued to battle till the end, finishing in the same order. This gave Woodie the overall ahead of Hjelman and Thomas. Erin Gray in the Women’s class saw good results as well. Gray the past two seasons has suffered from injuries. Although motocross has been hard on her body, Gray doesn’t give up and pushes herself every race.

Ashley Tibbetts finds traction after an early morning rain

Six ladies lined the gate, a pretty good number for the Women’s class. Ashley Tibbetts pulled the holeshot, Gray was fourth. Gray waited till end of the first lap to make a pass on Tonya ProkopNette. Running in second was Sereynna Thomas, then she made a mistake and Gray was able to get around her. Coming into a corner on the other side of a table, Gray found Tibbetts stuck on top of a berm. Gray went inside and into the lead . Prokop-Nette, Maddy Keck, and EdaMae Johnson were all able to get around Tibbetts. As Gray pulled away, Tibbetts was charging. She got around Johnson and Keck within a lap. Gray played it safe and got the win ahead of Prokop-Nette. The race was on in the second moto. Tibbetts pulled the holeshot again and started make a little bit of a gap on Thomas. Gray was in fourth. Halfway

through the lap Thomas ran into Tibbetts on a face of a double resulting in her rolling her quad and spinning Tibbetts around. Both ladies were okay but the rest of the ladies were able to get around both of them. After getting around the accident, Gray and Keck started battling for the lead. “I followed Maddy until the back straight and I just gave it the beans and ended up passing her,” said Gray. Gray took the win with Keck behind her in second. This was the first time since her back injury that Gray took the overall. Needless to say she was pretty stoked about it. Prokop-Nette got second overall with Keck third. The other ladies are younger and making their way as the future of the sport. The rest of the ladies include Eva Magnuson, Kaydence Hayden, Ashton Waldera, Anabella Bolander, Lexi John-

son, and Grace Anderson. There is no ‘girls’ class for quads like there is for bikes so these young ladies race with the boys just like Woodie does... and just like her, they kick butt! ound eight of the Fly Showdown Series rolled into Lincoln Trail Motosports and was welcomed by great weather. Cooler temperatures than normal for August allowed hard charging and great racing all day. The crew had a few surprises for the riders with the whole track reworked and the addition of sand and wood chips everywhere. The changes provided a challenge for the riders and left every rider on the same level no matter how often they’ve been here. The first class to hit the track was +55. Honda rider Roy Bittner grabbed the holeshot, started up the uphill rollers only to have his front end tuck sending him over the bars. Kawasaki rider Joe Day missed Bittner and ran off for the moto win. Yamaha rider Orville Kline finished second with Scott Eichhorst third. Bittner made it to the line for the second moto, a bit banged up. Joe Day proved it was his first ride wasn’t a one off and put in a great ride for another win. Kline again finished second. Back to racing off-road on factory Gas Gas bikes, Halls Gas Gas provided Damon with a new 250 to ride. Bradshaw showed up on Saturday and went to work setting up an off road course for the riders to enjoy Monday. Schnagl Rocks Viking Clash Millville, Minnesota - August 27 By Rolfe Otterness

N

ick Schnagl captured the Big Three as the Spring Creek Park Viking Clash returned for the tenth running. Schnagl wrapped up the overall in the 14-24, 250 and Open A classes. Schnagl has been off racing the pro nationals most of the summer but had time for a triumphant swing through Millville to take on the Spring Creek track in some tough conditions. Per standard operating procedure, Old Ma Nature profusely watered the track yet again and left it a in a soggy state. Johnny Martin and his gang of equipment operators went to work to on it in the a.m. and with no further rain during the day it did work into fairly decent shape by mid-day. It was a still a tough track and Schnagl was up to the challenge, winning four out of six motos. There were only 370 entries due to the weather, but it was rewarding for those that worked through the morning conditions. Never count out Spring Creek and Martin determination! Austin Kienast grabbed a holeshot to

lead the Open A riders out onto the slick course in moto one. Kienast held on for the first lap but Schnagl went to the lead on lap two. Moving up next lap was Tyler Lowe who overtook Dylan Narel right at the start of lap three, beginning his pursuit of Kienast. Sortly before taking the white flag Lowe grabbed second and the order was set at the checkered with Schnagl, Lowe, Kienast and Narel taking top four. Schnagl jumped out front in moto two and was never seriously challenged. Kienast and Narel went at it over second for many laps with Kienast finally shaking off the challenge at the flag. Brandon Stewart held fourth after Lowe recorded a DNS for moto two. Open C feature a good battle at the front as Trevor Bonnicksen and Levi Dertien got into a scrap over the lead. Bonnicksen held on under pressure to take the win while Casey Paider moved up during the moto to take third away from Daulton Schoon on the last lap. Kole Lemcke was close behind those two for fifth.

Paider must have been fired up because he shot into the lead as moto two erupted into action. Paider started to stretch out a bit of a gap while Lemcke passed Schoon on lap two then closed in to challenge Bonnicksen who was holding second. After a lap or so Lemcke managed to displace Bonnicksen who did a good job to keep pace but lost the position by about four bike lengths. Schoon snarfed up fourth while Yossem Rubalcava of Texas made his trip worthwhile by grabbing fifth! James Clough launched into the lead in the fiercely competitive 65cc 7-11 class. It is amazing how much skill these young guys have as they blitz around the track and Clough is usually out front. Christian Berg slotted into second early on while Brodie Boumeester and Tanner Schlegel battled over third. Brodie B and Schlegel had a bit of an incident and stalled out about mid-race and Berg got some breathing room. Brodie B ended up third with Schlegel and Wyatt McGrath rounding out the top five. Clough sped into the lead in the next CYCLE USA, October 2017

Thunder in the Valley Another exciting Peoria TT delivers impressive racing... again!

A fast group of 450 Singles off the line.

Peoria, Illinois - August 13 Peoria Motorcycle Club by Gordon Lunde

T

he fans just kept coming. All morning they came over the hills into Thunder Valley to watch the American Flat Track series racers compete for the coveted Peoria TT winner’s trophies. For the first time in over twenty years, the twin cylinder “big bikes” were coming back to these hallowed grounds. It was back in the mid 90s when the 750cc twin cylinder machines were deemed to be too heavy and dangerous for the Peoria TT track, replaced by the single cylinder 450 machines. With recent changes to the track for safety improvements on the jump, AFT decided to bring back the twins. Testing in June was positive and the series would run Twins and Singles in the Pro TT weekend. The Peoria TT is the longest consecutive running flat track race in the country. 1947 saw the first AMA Pro TT race at this facility and it’s been going strong ever since. It is simply a legendary race. The new “jump” is now two jumps. 36

CYCLE USA, October 2017

Each year the 450 single TT bikes get faster and the original jump got more dangerous. After some serious planning, a new smaller jump was built in front of the original to help slow the racer’s speed. Some thought this would spoil the race but, in fact, it kept the races safer and just as exciting. The Singles event turned out to be a well earned early birthday gift for Wisconsin’s Jesse Janisch on the West Bend H-D/Rock River Yamaha YZ450F. Janisch, coming off a third place finish at the Sturgis round, was ready to improve on that result, and improve he did! Jesse is the “old man” of the class with his 30th birthday coming up soon after the event. However, this old man let no moss grow under his tires. Proving he was here for the top spot on the podium, Janisch set the fast qualifying time, then won his heat race and semi-final event. At the start of the final, Janisch jumped out front to lead the first lap. Kolby Carlile on the Estenson Racing YZ450F snuck by Janisch on the inside of turn one on the next lap but wasn’t able to hold the lead. Janisch, upon seeing Carlile slide

by said, “No way, I need to hold this lead”, and at that dropped down under Carlisle and retook the point. After that it was a game of follow Jesse as he ran away to an official 2.386 lead at the checkered flag. The lead was actually much more, as realizing he had a commanding lead, Janisch slowed exiting the last corner and wheelied his way to the checkered flag. Just for topping on the birthday cake, Janisch also set the fastest lap in the final. Carlile took the runner up spot. Ben Lowe aboard his CRF450R finished third holding on to his fourth place in the championship point standings. In the Vance & Hines Twins class, Henry Wiles was the rider everyone had on their mind. Wiles has won twelve straight Peoria TT races aboard 450 single machines. This year he was riding the Willy Built/ Mad Dog Racing Kawasaki Ninja 650. Everyone was wondering if he could win on a different bike and the new track layout. After a huge disappointment in the Sturgis Buffalo Chip TT, Wiles was fired up for a win here and continue the Peoria streak. Chris Carr held the record at Peo-

ria with thirteen victories, but this year Carr would be watching from the sidelines as the Chief Competition Officer. Wiles put the smack down on the rest of the class early, as like Janisch, he won everything leading up to the final race. The Michigan rider never left a doubt as to who was the new “King of Peoria” as he leapt out front at the green flag and never relinquished the lead. Twentyfive perfect laps later Wiles sat with a tie with Chris Carr for the most wins at the Peoria TT. With this victory he also claimed sole ownership of the all time TT win record with eighteen. As well as winning the race and tying Carr’s record, Henry fulfilled a dream of his by taking his young son on a victory lap. Time will tell if the young Wiles boy will follow in Dad’s tire tracks and win his own Peoria TT... Jared Mees ran his factory Indian/ Rogers Scout FTR750 racing machine to the runner-up spot and continued stretching his championship points lead. Briar Bauman on the Zanotti Racing Kawasaki Ninja 650 took third. The Peoria Motorcycle Club provides a great facility for this national event. Bring a lawn chair or blanket to sit on the grass of this natural amphitheatre, or belly up to the fence by the jumps to see some great racing. But watch where you park, there may be a surprise outside your door….. these fields are home to the local cow herd when there are no races. See you next year!

Having grown up racing here, Geico Honda’s Chase Sexton returned to much fan fare, and dominated both of the ProAm classes.

Sunset Ridge Pro-Am Chase Sexton returns to dominate the huge Pro-Am classes

The ProAm classes were large and fast. Here Jesse Frassetto grabs a nice holeshot.

Walnut, Illinois - September 24 By Josh Rud, Shift One Photography

T

he last weekend of September was Sunset Ridge MX’s double header with Sunday being the ProAm race. It was a great weekend out at the track with great turn-outs both days and some tweaks to the track to keep things fresh. You couldn’t have asked for a better race weekend. Sunday’s ProAm caught our attention, and the races went off without a hitch all day. The fantastic track crew keeps the maintenance going through-out the day without ever really stopping the action, great for the racers as well everyone here to spectate. It was also nice to see Chase Sexton back at Sunset Ridge, fresh off his pro debut late in the season. Sexton put up some great results in the 250 class this year. Things got underway with 250C putting in some great racing. The first moto got underway with Iowa’s Kyle Hollenbeck taking the holeshot followed by Joe Quest and Joey Rakowski. As they made their way up the hill Devin Fell out of Wisconsin was on the move clicking off passes to get up into third behind Quest.

lowed by Ryder Schnowske and Luke Jackson. The second moto got underway with the pack funneling down into the first turn with KTM mounted Jackson out front followed by Campbell and Schnowske on his Husqvarna. Right away, Schnowske came in hot on the outside to carry the momentum up the hill, shooting into the lead. Then coming into the rollers his back end slid out putting him back while Campbell took over the lead, Jackson moved to second and Clayton Servaty slid up to third. From there things settled down a bit as Campbell built a good lead. Jackson was getting pushed by the pack behind him, then Indiana’s Servaty got around the inside to take over second after the white flag. The hard charger of the race was Jada Murphy out of Iowa who rode smooth and got into third with about half a lap left to go. This left Campbell in first overall, Servaty second after a sixth place in moto one and Murphy third (5-3).

Seemingly out of nowhere Cameron Campbell picked everyone off to take the lead. Fell was also on a mission to get to the front as he got around Quest going into the sweeper and Hollenbeck over the next jump to take over second behind Campbell. As the white flag came out Campbell exited the track, leaving the lead and the win to Fell. With some last minute passing in the back section of the track Quest climbed back up to second as Andrew Laybon grabbed third. In the second moto Fell took the win again along with Hollenbeck stepping it up for second place, and second overall as Rakowski grabbed locked down third after his first moto seventh. Third overall went to Quest finishing fifth to compliment his second place in moto one. Schoolboy 1 was a class to watch today with a lot of passing taking place. In the first moto Cameron Any time you are collecting this many Campbell took the win fol- trophies, well it just had to be a good day.

Any time conditions are at all in the control of the Sunset crew, you know they will be awesome.

Both of the ProAm classes were great to watch today with a lot of riders fighting all the way to last of the ten laps. Open A moto one was on the gate for the third race of the day, having thirty-two entries pretty much filled the line. The gates dropped for the day’s fastest riders and as they flew into the first turn Nico Izzi took the holeshot. Izzi is back on the bike and living in Wisconsin. Wisconsin’s Jesse Frassetto and Chase Sexton

(running the Geico Honda) were right there with him. After a lap Sexton was up to second with Izzi riding great in the lead. Moving up through the pack was Cody Vanbuskirk, now into third as Sexton got by Izzi by taking the inside after the finish and holding it down the straight for the lead as they finished lap three. They had seven more laps to run, including a section added only for the Pro Am classes to extend the lap times. This

brought the back of the track table tops back into play. It has been awhile since they were removed and it was cool to see the section in use. Blake Hansen out of Wisconsin had been on the charge the last half the race behind Vanbuskirk, pushing him the entire race. Hansen finally got around to take third as Sexton was up front for the win ahead of Izzi. In moto two things got a little shaken up with several crashes taking people out of the race, one being Izzi. The moto win and overall went to Chase Sexton, second in the moto and overall to Vanbuskirk as Hansen stayed consistent for third overall (3-3). Sexton also topped the large 250A class after winning both motos. Familiar riders joined him on the podium as Hansen went 3-2 for second overall ahead of Vanbuskirk (2-3) It was a great weekend out at Sunset Ridge. The heat was setting record highs, the races were fantastic and everyone had a good time while they could, knowing the season was winding down.

Season Ending Rapids HS Event determined several D16 Season Championships Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin - Sept. 10 Rapid Angels Motorcycle Club

D

istrict 16 closed out their 2017 Hare Scrambles season with a great double-header at the popular Dyracuse Off-Road Park in the Town of Rome. As always, the event was put on by the Rapid Angels Motorcycle Club, and it was another winner for sure! Saturday kicked off the racing with the quickly becoming very popular GP style racing. This is a two moto format that mixes the feel of long motocross motos in an off-road setting. Here at Dyracuse, much of the motocross track was used along with wider trail and wooded sections. The event paid points towards Hare Scrambles, drawing that crowd and some motocross regulars. On Sunday, it was a full on Hare Scrambles event that held several season Championship deciding battles. Weather was perfect. Low 70’s, sunny and the trail was just right, well marked and a perfect mix for all the riders. The morning youth race saw regular front runners quickly climb to the lead and take the wins. Overall winner Travis Bloyer of the 85cc class continued his

impressive season by turning six laps and leading all the way. Behind him in the class and overall was Will Halverson on his Yamaha. Halverson’s bike wouldn’t fire off the start so once he got it going, he had to work for it. He cut through the pack to finish ahead of Carson Hosking and Brandon Donahue. Kaiden Fisher still hadn’t wrapped up the 65cc class championship despite winning more often than not this season. After a rough first lap that saw him cross in third, he pushed ahead to finish four laps, get the win and lock up his season championship.

Nadia Ellingson topped the Girls class to finish ninth overall for the day. She came in with the Championship wrapped up, so this was a bonus performance! The 50cc class rider were next, starting over at the facility’s SX track, and mixing in a nice loop through the woods. Walker Garetson has been the star in this class all season and today was more of the same as he completed his perfect, undefeated season. The class’s top five points riders finished 1-5 after Cole Montgomery worked his way up to second ahead of Beau Garetson, Aiden Schmidt and Kellon Drone. Next up, the big bikes and an hour long race. Despite the best efforts by several quick +50 riders, C class rider Colton Thompson took the overall win. Thompson after a near perfect ride, “I got the holeshot and just had a super clean race so I was a little lucky with that. I rode really fast and tried to get it all out of my system being this is the last race before winter sets in. I couldn’t believe I had the holeshot and just led all the way. I’m not

Alling, “The outdoor track is pretty choppy and deep but overall the trails flowed really well. This was probably the best time I’ve ever had riding here. I think I did pretty well. I was maybe second off the start and fell back a bit before picking riders off one by one through the race so it was a lot of fun.” David Donahue led the first lap of the +50 class before dropping out and seeing Bryan Nebel take over. Nebel held a slim two second advantage until the fourth and last lap where Brad Kortbein slipped past for the win and second overall in the morning race. County Cycle’s Paul Bloyer rode to third. Nebel may have given up the win in the race, but it couldn’t take away from his season where he put in a ton of effort and will be awarded the class Championship at the banquet in November! ers joined the group for this last event and Frank Caballero topped them all. Joining him, James Williams and Chris Halverson did a great job on the old bikes as they pushed from a last row start to climb into the top ten overall. Falen Narel got the Women’s class win over Autumn Czappa. Narel, “My race started out a little rough. I got by Autum just after the start but then I crashed when we entered the woods and everyone went by. I took the first lap to learn the course then crashed again and stalled it a few times. On the last lap I saw Autumn on the side of the track... just sitting there. Being a motocross rider this is the one hare scramble I do each year at my home track. It’s always a challenge, but a lot of fun. I’m used to going as fast as you can for a short moto but in the woods at a long race like this you really need to slow down and work through it. It’s challenging, but really fun.” Czappa had worked up to a pretty safe lead before her bike stopped running on the last lap. This was the first race she didn’t win during the season - so even though it didn’t end the way she had hoped, scoring eight wins on the season and a Championship is very cool. Monica Jazwiecki rode in the C class and was already hollering “the course was kicking her rear” before the first lap was even finished... yet you could see her smiling even with her helmet on. Jazwiecki after the hour, “The track is awesome, but I’m whooped from yesterday at the Aztalan Senior Motocross where I rode in the Women’s class. I love the sport and wanted to do that and then this today. This is my favorite track so I had to come ride here - yesterday went well, today not so much as I fell a lot... but I still had a lot of fun.” The two hour afternoon race determined a couple Championships for the season. D16 President Todd Ellingson wrapped up the closely fought +40 class Championship over District Referee Karl Lueschow with a win on Saturday, and his worker points today. Joe Vadeboncoeur fought for the win today and third in the series points. He needed the four second victory over Greg Steffes as they were that close in points after a season of good racing.
