The large group of 12-29C class riders off the line in great racing conditions.

n today's world we all tend to focus on that hand held device once called a "phone", or if you are really old we called them "telephones". On this Sunday morning it was no different. The reason the radar. See in the last decade, racers are now weathermen/ women, it's how it rolls. Green all over the screen, but it had a nice split, and that split in the heavens was over the Quad City area where Tri-City Motorcycle club has resided since the early part of the 1900 century. 88! That's right. With the AMA there are charter organizations. For instance, a track celebrating 50 years this year is Motosports Park in Byron, IL. Their charter is 3421 so in reality, Tri-City's staying power at 88 gives you an idea what history this club has. Sunday morning saw tons of facebook posts, instagram messages, snap chat, smoke signals you name it riders just wanted to know can we race or is it that nasty word "muddy" and cancelled? 6

CYCLE USA, May 2019

The announcement was made, the riders believed and bam, conditions were near perfect and sunny. How can that be! So some scrambling around to adjust for the bigger turnout which wasn't expected and practice was off. Anyone familiar with the dirt at TCMC knows it dries fast, and that transition makes for traction and ruts that any dirt bike rider will grin ear to ear for. The stage was set with some of the GP hot rods showing up, Ryan Smith, Travis and Garrett Ward have been in the A class GP racing for years. With Colt Converse, Jon Adkisson from the Hare Scrambles side of things and Gavin Sienkiewicz, Thor Rick, and ELi Otterbach were new moves up from the B class - it was sure to be a great day in this class. Colt was the kid to beat. He had his Hall’s Husky signing as he followed Thor Rick's Braap shop Beta in both holeshots, but Colt dispensed any idea of a battle early in moto one. The one thing about GP racing, you get it all. Woods, Mx track, open fields, small creek crossings, it's an old school mix of all conditions. As this moto progressed Smith showed he could

ride the wife's 250 Yamaha almost as good as his cherished Kawy. Under powered for his style he rode the wheels off her bike and got it plenty dirty. Ryan worked up from middle pack start to put Adkisson and Garrett Ward in his re-view. Travis Ward on his Megatraxs 125 Honda was showing it's signs of age and lack of power. The big natural hills at Tri-city will rob power like no other. Moto two started with the same riders shuffled for a while. Rick pulled the holeshot again and Converse passed early before hitting the timber trail. Coming up to the wood bridge he launches and clears the ditch, now not messing with some bridge, a true speed move. But you know there is always that "but" word in this case... the first mud puddle has grown to a hole, with a way around it. Converse hits like a leader would and down he went, getting stuck and stopping the top riders in the class, who now are all in this with him. Lagging a little behind Travis Ward saw this pile up and simply went around on what would be called the "sally" trail. His 125

was signing and Converse, Smith and his brother Garrett were not having any of this stuff. As they came around in the first lap Converse on him, Smith, Garrett, and Adkisson are battling. Seems that some of the tighter trails Travis Ward could hold his own, but no way on the moto track. In the big bowl turn Converse put a solid pass on Travis Ward and then checked out. Smith was next to slide up to second. As this is unfolding little brother Ward isn't going to let big brother off the hook. Same bowl turn, with a little more "skin" on the last lap he punts his older brother off the track. Travis didn't go down and little brother was smiling and running hard away from what he knew was coming next. Dave Genung jumps off the next tabletop so not to get run over and in the last corner they locked bars all the way around. Little brother takes third, big brother fourth, and well it won't be forgotten for a long time. All this in two of the ten 20-25 minute long motos. These are quick, action filled days usually wrapping up around three or four in the afternoon. Kevin Lee pulled holeshots in the +50B/C class but a lack of riding this winter reared it's ugly head as Jay Porter and Daniel Kickbusch passed him for the top two top spots in both motos.

Kevin Lee and Jay Porter enjoy a good race in the +50B/C class.

Garrett Ward and Ryan Smith fight for position in the A class

Second moto was who was going to stay up the longest. Not the major flipping down a straight type crashes but both Porter and Lee couldn't decide who wanted to take

that next spot! Porter sticks it in the muddy ruts before the road crossing as Lee sees this and goes around on the "easy" trail... which by this is time rutted too. They merge back to the course, with Porter just getting ahead, only to tip over further up trail. This back and forth happened til they finally settled down and Porter seemed to have a little more steam at the end. Neither rider had a clue they were behind Kickbusch who won the moto. After the race Lee stated, "where did that guy come from? we didn't see him the whole moto!" Talking to Nick Balzer the TCMC club president after the event he said, “We couldn’t have asked for a better day. The track turned into hero dirt by late afternoon. We had an awesome turn out leaving every starting gate full. There were some particularly tight battles including another bar banger from start to finish between Andrew Ballard and Colin Lyon in the B class. It was a superb day for the club, our riders, and for the Grand Prix series!" Kyleigh Mclaughlin rode the B class on Sunday, she had a rough go of it in the first moto hitting the ground on the uphill, then bouncing off an old guy in a rutted corner that came together only to hit the ground again. She put together a little better second moto but ran into trouble with a bridge crossing. She said, "I always have an awesome time at Tri-City working and racing CYCLE USA, May 2019

I don’t think Colin and Andrew were further than a bike length apart at the end of either moto! The layout was phenomenal as usual. MA District 16 Dirt Track Coordinator, Dan Vrana, along with Hogz & Honeez Bar in Beaver Dam, WI hosted a free to the public competition bike show. The effort was to create some awareness and excitement for the upcoming District 16 dirt track season. Many local competitors showed up to display their bikes and equipment to the public and race fans. The Johnson family, Steve Kasten, Mischlers HD/BMW, Lang Brothers and AFT Pro Singles racer Morgen “Merg” Mischler were just a few of the racers and teams on hand. Clash at the Coliseum AMA District 23’s season opening Flat Track event St Paul, Minnesota - March 23 By Tim McBride

T

he District 23 flat track season got underway at the Lee and Rose Warner Coliseum. Although falling in the shadows of a very successful indoor race held the previous evening where over 200 entries were on hand, the event featured some great competition. Sixteen classes were run on Saturday including some new ones for 2019. Mad Dog Max, Hooligan and a Women’s class are now championship

points paying divisions. Another interesting note is the influx of racing couples. Verlon and Jessica Langland, Kyle and Trisha Dahl, Erik Moldenhauer-Jillian Deschenes, Gabe JungrothHannah Rose, have all been seen racing flat track in District 23’s fast growing community. Even though these couples are having a great time racing, the partnership of Erik Moldenhauer and Jillian Deschenes have garnered the most success in terms of winning races this weekend. She also topped the highly competitive 250A main event this afternoon with Moldenhauer finishing fourth. With the win column leaning in Deschenes’ favor 3 to Moldenhauer’s 2 one only has to wonder who’s buying dinner. Deschenes was the only multi-class winner today. The Open A Amateur class saw a couple of speedy Wisconsin youngsters go head to head. Loyal Ptuch nabbed the win ahead of

a hard charging Ezra Brusky. Look for these two District 16 rising stars in the future. Tory Jones and Chad Sparks finished third and fourth respectively. Kyle and Trisha Dahl enjoyed a successful day of racing and were later spotted with some second place trophies. Kyle finished second in the Super Singles class. Trisha

Trials at “Smagical Rock” Mauston, Wisconsin - April 14th By Kevin Huber

T

he Wisconsin Observed Trials Association had their first event of the 2019 season on April 14th. This event is on Noel Smage’s land near Mauston, Wisconsin. For the second year in a row the snow tried to impact the event. The weekend before the event when the set up crew was working the course was dry and the sun was shining. Then on Wednesday a couple inches of snow fell. Thursday and Friday it was only in the 30’s and very little melted. On Saturday it did get a little warmer hitting 44 degrees. To help things along a few of us spent the day raking and shoveling snow. A backKeith Johnson rode to third in Expert.

pack leaf blower was even used to help blow the snow away. By Sunday the sections were mostly clear where the bikes needed to make traction. There was still snow around the woods and some of the sections were a little wet and slick, but the riding turned out great. Again, being the first event of the year brought a good turnout with riders coming from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois and Michigan. I’m sure there were some that were skeptical about the weather and stayed home. It was their loss for missing a great day. There were even a few riders that are new to the sport this year. There were no falls for Phil and he only put his foot down three times in the twenty-four sections. I rode my vintage bike for this event and put my foot down many more times than Phil did. I was able to ride with some of the new riders and explain some of the scoring and riding details for the sport. D16 Gran Prix racing takes off Dyracuse, Wisconsin - April 27 By Doug Forstner

S

omething about hibernation that has me intrigued. Bears come to mind, they eat like crazy in the fall and stuff themselves into oblivion and then crawl into a hole for the winter to avoid the crazy winter weather. Once spring starts to roll around they come back out and start eating again and enjoy nicer weather, which sounds good based on the winter we had this year. When you ride dirt bikes around here, you usually ride as much as possible in the fall knowing that it could a long winter. Anticipation of riding really starts to hit in February, but ramps up to all time levels in March and April. So when it finally gets nice out like the weekend before a race, sunny and 65 degrees, the endorphins are flying. However, a snow storm prediction for the District 16 season opening Gran Prix make you second guess racing. Do we crawl back into the hole or bundle up and race? The Dyracuse GP format is a combination of motocross and hare scrambles with each class getting two extended time races over a motocross and woods course. AA/A/B classes ran 30 minutes and started the day off. Dylan Narel took the first moto win over Cody Steuck. Matt Mcdonald

risked driving through the snow storm that was hitting southern WI and made the trek up from Illinois. The trip paid off with a third place in moto one. Tanner Whipple and Chuck Garetson rounded out the top five. Second moto AA, Austin Hamburger pulled a big holeshot. Lined up on the outside he swept around and led for most of the first lap. Narel who was fourth off the start made a couple passes during the first lap and came around in the lead at the end of lap one followed by the fast Illinois riders Whipple and Mcdonald. Whipple put steady pressure on Narel the entire race and

Mcdonald wasn’t far behind, waiting for something to happen where could capitalize on. At the checkers, it was Narel with the win and the overall ahead of Whipple who went 4-2 for second. Mcdonald was consistent with his 3-3. Steuck ended up going 2-4 for fourth and Pete Laubmeier ended up fifth. Logan Cipala decided to get some seat time before the hillclimb season starts and won the first moto in the A class, beating Ben Bernard and Ben Kortbein. B class had a couple moto guys up front battling. Brock Noreen took the moto one win over Nick Jacobson and Lukas Erdmann. Noah Dalsing was fourth followed by Luke Cipala. It was good to see fourteen entries in the B class with lots of action. Most of the riders that came off the track after moto were in agreement that the track was in fantastic condition and glad to have made the trip to race. Second moto again had Cipala out front and he actually closed the gap on some of the AA riders. For a hillclimber, he sure looked at home on the motocross track. The B class had a battle out front again with Noreen and Jacobson. Noreen eventually pulled a comfortable lead which he took to the checkers. Jacobson finished second overall ahead of Dalsing. Erdmann, was putting heat on Jacobson throughout the moto and at one point the two traded paint and Erdmann backed off and that was enough to give Jacobson and

Dalsing an advantage. Jeremy Noreen rounded out the top five. C class had the largest turnout with twenty-seven riders including Elliot Bennett who ventured down from the frozen tundra Hancock, Michigan. He had a good challenge from Luke Vanlyssel but was able to fend him off for the win. Luke is fresh and looks to be in good race shape coming off a successful snowcross season. Brody Reese was third followed by Kayleb Pilman and Colton Gaylord. Second moto again saw Vanlyssel out front with Bennett hot on his heels. It looked like Vanlyssel would be able to capitalize as he was riding a really steady race. However, late in the race lappers became an issue and Vanlyssel ended up getting hung up as Bennett was able to slip by and take the win and overall. Local rider Pilman went 4-3 for third. Reese grabbed fourth overall and Kevin Puls from Muskego went 6-6 for fifth. From the 50cc class all the way to +60, most said how

The Pro and Sportsman Hooligan main events were all fielded by Harley-Davidson powered machines. The evening’s event also drew a large and fast group of single cylinder competition. The Pro Singles main event saw Parker Lange sitting on the pole for the start, but he fell early on and brought out the red flag. Unfortunately Lange was re-starting on the back row with a whole bunch of fast competition ahead of him. The Go-Moto entry of Nick Mataya held the lead after the re-start and appeared smooth and fast. However Lange was on the move as he carved his way up to finish a close second place to Mataya by race end. Brady (Lange) was garnered third after Mac McGrew fell in the last lap and hit the front straight wall hard. McGrew was up and ok, but his Honda suffered some pretty serious damage. In other racing action, the Sportsman (single cylinder) Open class saw third generation racer Cale Langland perform a crowd pleasing last-corner pass on race leader Lowell Bronstad to steal the win. Corbin Erickson cruised to victory in the 250cc main.

The Mad Dog main event saw a scary incident when Jillian Deschenes fell and was then run over by another competitor. Deschenes however remounted her Honda and finished a gritty fifth place finish. Shawn Scheely won the race with Adam Popp, Lowell Bronstad and Ryan Schmidt in tow. The Vintage class was also much less dramatic as relative newcomer to flat track racing Erik Moldenhauer darted to victory on his Yamaha 500 TT ahead of some pretty heavy competition that included Duke Erickson, Jeremy Deruyter, Dan Lauters and Clint Erickson.

Lincoln Trail Motorsports Season opening March MX a wet and cold one! Casey, Illinois- -March 24 By James and Rollanda Pinckard

L

ast year was great for Lincoln Trail Motosports‌ right up to the final event. Right before their 2018 Awards Night the building that was the heart and soul of LTM caught fire taking away almost everything. Even though the season ended on a sour note, all year long the weather allowed them to host their events from February to November with outstanding rider counts. This year riders and their families were welcomed to the new building that hosted the pro shop, sign-up and more. After the first two races were cancelled because of weather there was again a threat of bad weather for this event. Saturday ride day on the Bomber Track was great, everyone was smiling and having a good time, while also watching the weather. Sunday morning we awoke to clouds but even so over

500 entries signed up for the race. By the time the first moto went to the line rain was falling. With the motos eventually dropped to three laps riders slid their way around the track, but it’s been a long winter and everyone wanted to be on the track. Even with the rain you could tell riders were happy to see each other on and off the track. On the exit of the track, cold and covered in mud, there must have been a hundred high fives and fist bumps. At the end of the first set of motos the staff decided to call the event. In the +60 class you could expect they would have been happy

to have a shortened race to get out of the rain, but no one told these guys. They were hard charging the whole moto and in the end it was Yamaha rider Orville Kline tak-

ing the win. Yamaha riders Lyndon Campbell and Charles Nice had a good battle for second as Charlie Spindler finished fourth. The Open A class was super fast. Honda rider Trevor Tate and KTM mounted Carter Gordon flew in the mud. One contender they may not have planned on seeing was local rider Blake Copeland and his Suzuki. Copeland kept them honest the whole moto and rounded out the top three. Suzuki rider Dawson Chesnut slid into fourth with Nick Lasecki fifth. The +25 class was all Blake Copeland who had his Suzuki floating in the mud, taking the win with Nick Lasecki second and Honda rider Scott Kooistra third. The 85SR class was one of biggest of the day and had riders from six states battling for a win. With that many riders there were guys and gal (Kyla Pogliano finished 13th) all over the track trading spots, going down, remounting and charging and just good racing. When the mud stopped flying it was KTM rider Hunter Savage who was the king taking the win. Yamaha rider Brandon Bollino finished second. Connor Dawkins and Warren Claybaugh battled to third and fourth as Teegan Dowers rounded out the top five. Nuclear-Sunset Power Series Opening Day of a Milestone Year at Byron, IL’s Motosports Park! Byron, Illinois - April 21 By Mariska Minkus

T

he 2019 Nuclear-Sunset Series begins, but this Opening day was no ordinary race day. This marks a Milestone for Motosports Park, as they kick off their 50th year of MX racing. Riders and their families began arriving on Friday with the campground at full capacity. Saturday’s open practice felt like a regional weekend, today’s racers have Joe Vincer to thank for that. It was a big decision made fifty years ago by Vincer that made today’s racing possible. For the past fifty years, riders from all over the Midwest have driven to the end of Ash Road in the town of Byron, IL to enter the gates of Motosports Park to race motocross. It all began back in 1969 when Joe Vincer, a successful A rider in the Midwest was asked to help run the first race. So with a wheel barrow and a shovel in hand, he laid out the track and ran the event. “Much to the dismay of his family”, stated Aaron Vincer, Joe’s son. In 1970 Joe became the new property owner and went into business as a race promoter. Aaron went on to say, “the early days for motocross were like the wild west, and “Moto Joe”, as he was

named, became the ring leader with a cast of characters like out of a movie. Names like Moto Mike, Bear, and a cast of others took that one race in 1969 too running twenty plus events in the late 1970’s.” Motosports Park was originally on fifty acres of land, and was among the first to introduce the use of a watering truck and the backward falling start gates, which is still used today. But in the mid 70’s, Joe found himself fighting against a large corporation known as, Com-Ed. That was the beginning of the land acquisition of the now Byron Nuclear Plant. Moto Joe fought hard against the eminent domain laws and was able to save the portion of land that is being used today. In the early 1980’s they started racing every Sunday, the sport was growing and so was Motosports Park. They raced 35 to 40 times a year all the way into the early 2000’s. “I’m pretty sure we held more motocross races than anyone in the world,” stated Aaron. Joe wanted a way to keep people involved in the sport. In the early years he started a riding school and brought trainers into the facility including Russ Darnell and Professor Gary Bailey. In the fall of 1990 Moto Joe decided it

was time to sell the park. And so he did, to a young couple that were only twenty years old at the time. But it wasn’t someone who was unfamiliar with running a motocross facility. It was at that time when, Aaron and Tanya Vincer bought the business. Yes, back in 1970 the family was dismayed with the start of this whole motocross track idea, but here it is fifty years later and it’s still being run by a Vincer. Aaron had the knowledge, he worked for his father for quite a few years. “The owners kid got the worst jobs and the longest hours,” according to Aaron. During his high school years, the park was racing every Sunday from March through October. Aaron ran the start gate for years along with having to wake up riders on race day mornings to collect the gate fees. “Turned out running a business was harder than it looked. I’ve had ups and downs, and a lot of hard lessons, but quitting was never an option,” said Aaron. So here we are fifty years later and ready to race another season! With a beautiful sunrise and great weather forecasted for the day, riders were eager to get on the starting line and begin racing. The track conditions were prime and would develop those perfect ruts riders look forward to. CYCLE USA, May 2019

Many changes have been made throughout the years and this year is no exception. New for 2019 is the Nuclear-Sunset Power Series, with the Series being run at two tracks. This new series was developed with the collaboration of track owners Bob and Jan Pistole of Sunset Ridge MX. The series consists of four races, the first two will be held at Motosports Park and the final races of the series will be at Sunset Ridge. The combined points of both tracks will determine the Nuclear-Sunset Power Series winners for each class. Also returning this year, is the racing contingency offered by Answer Racing. This weekend’s winner of the 85JR class will be going home with a brand new set of gear compliments of Answer Racing and Tucker. With the Youth Regionals being hosted by Motosports Park this year, there were a lot of fast young riders filling the youth classes. In the 85cc (12-15) it was Ryder Beth (Genoa City, WI) on his Robs Performance/ Sportland2 Kawasaki pulling the holeshot in both motos and leading with consistant fast laps all day. “I ended up pulling the holeshot and had a good battle going on with Aiden Price the first few laps. After that I charged till the end of the race and took the win.” said Beth. Ayden Price (Fall River, WI) road fast and smooth trying to keep the pressure on Beth, going 2-2 for

the day as Radko Tomko (Elgin, IL) took third overall with 5-3 finishes. Beth also went on to win both motos of the SuperMini class with Brandon Nelson out of Minnesota going 2-2. Price grabbed third overall. The +40B/C class had a gate of eleven riders, many of them have been racing to-

gether since the 80’s. Tim Palka, “My first race was in 1987 and Byron is where I starting my racing. I have many memories here at this track.” As the gates dropped it was #44 Tim Palka pulling the holeshot both motos. He pushed hard to put a gap between him and #722 David Degelau who was running in

second after passing Dennis Jeffrey on the first lap. There was a good battle for third in both motos with Yamaha riders Paul Marescalco (4-3) and Joel Middlebrook (34) swapping positions. When asked about the racing Palka went on to say, “I had two

great holeshots and pushed as hard as I could for two laps. I knew I was going to fade with this only being my second ride of the year.” With a large number of riders in Open C and 250C, it was the Wisconsin rider Bran-

don Martyniak on his Kawasaki that led all four motos with a large lead and the overall wins. Coming in second in Open C was Jayson Crawford (Rock Falls, IL) and Joe Quest (LaMoille, IL) pulling out third overall, after finishing seventh in the first moto. In 250C it was Brody Chyma of Iowa) going 2-2 followed by Isaac Therrien (Seymour, WI) in third with a consistent (3-3) ride. With eleven riders on the gate for Open A, there was no shortage of excitement. As the gate dropped in the first moto it was #379 Connor Burger (KTM) with the holeshot, and he never looked back. He pushed hard, throwing down consistently fast laps and creating a nice gap. But there was a group of really fast riders behind him that wanted the win just as bad and they all rode hard making passes trying to gain on Burger. Nick Wallace was running in second for the first three laps before Nick Inman made the pass on him after Wallace popped out of a rut. After five fast laps Wallace cleared the finish line in third just ahead of RJ Mackenzie and former Arenacross Champion Chad Johnson. The thrills delivered by these riders carried right into the second moto where once again Burger was able to get the jump on them with the holeshot. This time Burger made a mistake going into the third corner and Inman made the pass. With Inman pulling away, Wallace slipped into second. Burger was riding hard but then went down again. Now with his bars stuck in the mud, he had to fight to get his bike up, and was being passed by the other riders. He was down to fifth by the time he got going. With the laps clicking away he was able to make the pass on Mackenzie and Johnson, to finish third in the moto. Inman grabbed the impressive overall win ahead of Burger and Wallace. Wallace, “I tried charging to catch Inman in that second moto but ended up getting a flat on the fourth lap so I just rode it out for second.”

65Jr - #64 Jaxson Schiller, #452 Matthew Alshouse and #811 Landon Whitney rounding the announcer stand turn

The 250B & Open B classes had some familiar riders from the previous year, but also some new competitors that had moved up from C class the previous year. Both classes saw #188 Eddie Norred on his Rock River Yamaha getting the jump off the start, then pulling a large gap on the rest of the group. With fast laps he dominated to win both classes. Open B had Justin Peterson going 2-2 ahead of Kyle Campbell. 250B had some more action with riders fighting for the runner-up positions in both motos. At the end of the day it was #8 Nicholas Gaskell coming away with second, topping #120 James Hermes. After a day of racing and fun in the sun, the highlight became watching the youngest of riders receiving their trophies. The pure happiness and excitement to show their achievement after a long day of racing would put a smile on anyone’s face. They were all excited, and loved telling their race stories. #344 Chase Beake (Lake Villa, IL) said, “Racing at Byron felt good. My lap times are getting better and I had a couple of good holeshots, too!” These race days will give them the greatest of memories for a lifetime too come. As trailers were being packed and the riders were leaving, you

could hear them saying “See you at the next Race.” Aaron Vincer reminisced about the past years and where he is now, “Running a race track is all about building a team. So many people have contributed to the Park over the years. There are hundreds to thank.” And as he went on, with the names of some extraordinary people were given. To name a few, he wanted to give thanks to, “Of course my Dad Joe. My Mom, Sue who was there for the very first race and supported Motosports Park from the beginning. My wife Tanya for living this crazy lifestyle for over twenty years, Don Hachmeister who wrote the software for sign-up and now runs LapTimes USA, the smartest thing he did was marry my Mom! The Mark Kelsey family for helping build the track and becoming lifelong friends. Bill Ziesk and family for their support and driven change at Motosports Park and JR Barone for his years of sponsorship and continued friendship.” There were so many more, but as he reflected on his time at the park, Aaron left off with saying “I have a great sense of gratitude. I can’t wait to see what happens next!”

Sugar Maple MX Opener First motocross of District 16’s 2019 season lands on an awesome weekend Hillpoint, Wisconsin - April 21 Sugar Maple Motocross

T

oday wasn’t suppose to be the opener for D16, but after snow, rain and nasty weather cancelled the previous week’s race by the Aztalan Cycle Club, Sugar Maple Motocross west of Madison, WI got the honors. What an opener it was! Saturday practice and Sunday’s race were held in sunny, 70-80 degree temps - a very welcome change in the recent weather pattern. The track was perfect. The Sugar Maple crew was well organized and very ready for a great weekend and they delivered it perfectly. Congrats to Keith Smart and everyone involved in making it happen. The +50 class had eleven riders - but only one of them would ever hold the lead position through both motos. Frank Weiss made it clear he was ready for the challenge as he rounded the first turn in moto one ahead of Kevin Yde and Tom Ferguson. By the second lap the top three were holding the same, spacing out a bit as Weiss was locked in for the win. Jeff Ramsay was quick to move up to fourth, then by moto’s end into third ahead of Ferguson. Jeff Oakes is back in action as of last year, and finished fifth. Moto two was more of the same for Weiss - running out front for the win. This time Ferguson stepped it up and finished

second ahead of Yde. Second overall still went to Yde (2-3) as Ramsay’s first moto pass on Ferguson (4-2) robbed him of the runner-up overall spot. Ramsay finished

fourth in this moto. 250C had seventeen riders come off the line to start moto one and that was the only chance they had to see Yamaha mounted Elijah Tetzlaff before he motored away for the win. Sean Badker dialed it up a bit after the opening lap and slipped past Aidan McCormick for second. Kollin Kadinger was riding well in fourth, pushing hard to move up. By mid-moto Dylan Knoch had picked up the pace, climbing from fifth to third, setting the final order out front as Gage Neubauer finished sixth. The second moto finishing order was set CYCLE USA, May 2019

early as the top five riders were quickly into the same positions as moto one. Tetzlaff out front followed by the same four riders. Badker after his second place finish, “This moto went pretty well as I led for a while but couldn’t keep him (Tetzlaff) behind me. My arms are dead... this is my first race of the year and it sure is a good day. The track is perfect and they did a great job of maintaining it.” The +30A riders came out ready for some good racing. Oak Creek’s Jake Smith held the lead through the first lap, really under pressure from Rockford, IL’s Chad Johnson. Back a few bikes lengths was another bar banging fight over third between Bradley Johnson, Keith DeGrand and Lucas Padrutt. Chad Johnson took over the lead up by the spectators on the third lap as the other battle also started sort itself out. Bradley Johnson took over third but Padrutt was coming hard. The final two laps saw Padrutt really ride well and advance all the way up to second place ahead of Smith at the finish. Bradley Johnson finished fourth ahead of Justin Fluger who also moved up a lot in the final laps. Vetesnik Power Sports/ Latitude Graphics/ Fly backed Padrutt, “This is my first time out on a new bike, the 250f. I started making moves early and found some good lines that worked. The track is really good today and that helps a lot. I’m having a blast and really working the corners hard to make up time. You can use the track’s wide and open turns if you work it.” Chad Johnson returned in the second moto to score another win on his 250f against the bigger 450’s. BWR Engines backed Johnson after the moto, “I can’t get a start to save my life, so I had to work up in the first moto. This time it was a little better. We (he and Smith) drag raced through the rollers down at the bottom of the hill in the first lap and I just didn’t let off until I knew I had the pass for the lead. It was a lot of fun. I have another moto coming and tried to save a little for that, but he kept me moving and stayed close all moto. I’m winded for sure. I’m not as much of an outdoor guy but come up here because the track is so awesome. It is well prepped and really a good race track.” Smith held on for second with Padrutt just behind. DeGrand got the best of Bradley Johnson and Fluger this time for fourth in the moto, and fifth overall. Josh Ramsay made the short trip over from Baraboo for the +30B/C class win. Off the start in moto one he pushed his

Honda right to the front. By the time they were all dropping into the track’s bottom section for the second lap, he was grabbing some breathing room over Josh Tammi. Jake Kadinger and Nick Hess were in the mix as Jacob Maas was grabbing a little extra throttle out of a couple of the corners and making up time. By the third lap Maas

had powered his way up to second - but the charge ahead would end there as Ramsay was gone and on his way to the victory. Ramsay jumped out of the second start and led all the way, this time with Maas holding second right from the gate drop. Kadinger had a better start and held third to the end, ahead of a moto long battle be-

tween Hess, Tammi and Stephan Kopplin. Madison, WI’s Josh Bowman led Minnesota’s Luke Geis through the first lap of the Schoolboy 1 class. Geis was pushing hard until mid moto when he ran into problems letting Carter Kauffman and Alex Romanowski by. In moto two Geis wanted redemption and got it, scoring the moto win for second overall. Bowman rode well again, wrapping up the overall with a smart second place finish as Kauffmann finished third for the moto and overall. Brooke Kennebeck made the trip up from Illinois and immediately set a fast pace out front in the first moto of the Women’s class. It was short lived though as she came off one of the plateau jumps awkwardly and took a hard tumble that brought out a rare (for this facility) medic flag. He hope she recovers quickly. Dana Hanna and Anita Wadkins spent the rest of the moto tussling over the lead with

Brooke Philbrick and Autumn Czappa tied up in a fight over fourth, back just a little. In the final lap Wadkins grabbed the lead for good ahead of Hanna, Philbrick, Czappa and Angel Ennis in fifth. Philbrick led early in moto two but as they approached the final corners of the first lap she stalled her bike, dropping behind Hanna and Czappa. As they came to close out the second lap Philbrick used that same corner to re-take second. By that time Hanna had built a good lead that she simply

wasn’t about to let go of. First moto winner Wadkins finished fifth behind Ennis and Czappa. Race winner Hanna after crossing the line in moto two, “It went absolutely awesome out here for me today. We did some suspension changes and it is making a difference in everything from my starts to getting around the entire track. It is getting pretty rough out there but it makes it more fun that way. I’m really looking to get back into my racing this season and today was a great

start to that.” Brecken Maas climbed to the front in 65cc 7-11 after starting back a couple spots. The first laps saw a lot of juggling with Grant Neubauer and Chad Schmitt both looking really quick. Once into the lead Maas wouldn’t be denied and took the win. Schmitt held onto second as Neubauer settled into third ahead of Tyler Buros. In the second moto it all changed as Neubauer bounced into the lead as Maas ran into problems in the final laps. Schmitt was consistent in second, this time ahead of Maas who settled for third. Neubauer’s 3-1 run was good for the overall. Brock Noreen had the quick reflexes in Open B, grabbing the first moto holeshot. Devin Fell was right there as Max Earley immediately made his presence known to them both. Quickly taking over second and then by the end of lap two, Earley used the three plateaus at the top of the track to take the lead. Once there it was all his race as he pulled a little further away with each lap. Noreen held second as Michael Youngthunder slid into fourth behind Fell. In the second moto Earley created some extra work for himself as he gated back in fourth with Noreen out front. Earley found a line around Kendall Biever and then Dalton Pergande for second during the first lap. Now on the back fender of Noreen the race was on for the overall. Earley, “I had a poor start from the outside. I made it through the pack well but then Brock and I had a good battle right up to the end. I haven’t rode since September and it was hard to hold on with the arm pump I got. On that last lap we went down the big hill side by side and he was going to the inside each time so I went outside and just got a great drive through the long whoop section and took over. I’d really like to thank my parents, grandfather, Ride On Powersports, Jen and Shawn in particular for everything they do.” Noreen finished second as Youngthunder made it up to third ahead of Pergande. CYCLE USA, May 2019

In the A classes, Kaukauna’s Blake Hansen put on quite a show, winning three of his four motos. His only second place finish came in moto one of the 250 class when Seth Doeberlein grabbed the win. Hansen on his 450 was the only rider of the day to shorten a three plateau section on the track’s infield... hitting the second one hard enough to land on top of the third. It helped him make a couple passes early in the Open A motos that he eventually went on to win ahead of Josh Philbrick. A special mention needs to go out to Milo Maas and Riley Busse of the 85cc 9-11 and the Mini Open classes. The two swapped moto wins, and in both classes put on a show that easily caught everyone in the pits attention. They both scores wins - but more importantly put in hard and exciting motos, the best and closest racing of the day. And it was a day filled with good racing. A note on the June event... see the schedule adjustments. The weekend was originally split into two days of racing - but is now being ran as two stand-a-lone events. All classes running on both days with the bonus of Sunday being a Pro-Am.
