From the Back of the Pack By Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman Another month has gone by, at least we haven’t been inundated by the rain we had at the beginning of the season. We’ve had many successful events so far. We’re not quite half way through the season and participation has been good. I’m excited for the rest of the season. We have a new pro hill climb in August. This should be an event not to miss. I can ‘t wait to see those nitro powered bikes go up Mt Martin, in just a few seconds. The amateur climbers will have a chance to attack the hill the following day. We also have a large number of racers that have qualified for the Loretta Lynn’s Amateur Championship lets wish them all the best. We want to wish our off road racers all the best in their bid to make the ISDE team. Our Flat Track racers are working on upping the number of races and bringing back the indoor race at the St Paul Armory with the goal of including amateur racers this coming winter. Plans are moving forward for our year-end awards choices. If you know of anyone that would like to enter a bid have them bring a sample of their awards and the pricing to our September meeting. We’re looking to add a couple of our founding members to the awards this year, since we are celebrating our 50th anniversary. Speaking of our anniversary, the gift bags we put together for all of our members are available at all of our events. Remember that you will need that black card that was included with your membership card in order to claim your bling. One order of business that was brought up is racers moving themselves down a skill level. The only way that a racer can move down a skill level is to petition the AMA. There are forms for this on the AMA web site. It does not matter if you haven’t ridden for years, you have to petition to move down. The penalty for moving yourself back down is a one year suspension of your AMA card. This is considered a serious offense by our parent organization. Those of you with road bikes don’t forget about the Fall Flood Run that is

coming up September 15th, this is always a really fun day. The money raised goes to medical facilities which is a very worthwhile cause. Congratulations to our racers that qualified for the Pro MX National in Millville. We have a few new pro licensed racers among them Ben Adamson, who qualified in the fast 36 based on his practice times. This is a real accomplishment for a first time pro race. Ben finished both motos, again a big accomplishment. That is all I have for this month - I hope to see you at some of our events as the season progresses. Mike

Heat wave hits Adams HS Adams, Wisconsin - May 27 By Ken Schuck, photos by Brian Mullane

T

he Madison Motorcycle Club kicked off their 2018 season with the now traditional Hare Scrambles event in Adams, WI. The course

Brent Hanke didn’t let the heat keep him from riding hard

here is often one of the favorites on any riders’ schedules, and this year was more of the same. Only catch this year was a freak heat wave that sent temps spiking way above normal, maybe even enough to have discouraged a few riders from attending. Better the heat than a bunch of rain - but still, it was daunting for riders, crews and the track workers. The 65cc and 85cc classes kicked the day off at 9am. Brady Brixen and Walker Garetson went 1-2 in the 65cc field of five riders. Meanwhile, ten enthusiastic racers cranked out laps in the 85cc class. KTM mounted Cole Morgan led from wire to wire. Mason Kubis and Alex Floyd rounded out the top three. The 50cc riders clicked off the laps in their race, and it appears the Madison Motorcycle Club

will need to make the course a bit longer. Top three finishers were Cooper Liak, Charlie Anderson and Cole Montgomery. The largest class of the day, C class, with over thirty riders raced at 11:00 a.m. along with the +50 riders and Vintage class. By now the summer-like heat was being felt by the riders. The full six mile course included some sand bogs, open woods, and some tighter wooded sections. Pathfinder and landowner Bob Kau laid out a fast and flowing trail. Perhaps the only place to cool down was on the dam by the lake. Noah Dalsing topped the C class. Tom Frieburg won in +50 and James Williams rode his Honda to first place in Vintage. The day culminated with the two hour race for the remaining 49 riders in the AA, A, B and +40 classes. By now a smart phone in the scoring tent showed 101 degrees. JD Freibel set the pace on his Husky in the super competitive AA class. MMC shortened the race to 1 and ½ hours as the heat took its toll on the racers. Second and third places went to Eric Mischler and Dylan Narel. Tony Montgomery, Ryan Grotegut and Darren Carlson finished 1-2-3 in the seventeen rider A class. Easton Morgan, Brent Hanke and Jared Brereton completed six laps and topped the B class. Top +30B finishers were a mixed group. Joe Barr, former flattracker we haven’t seen lately was first. Dave Peters, 60+ year old MXer and one-time D16 enduro referee was second (new hip is working out great) and Matt Sather took a couple hours away from scoring the race and finished third. Joe Vadeboncoeur won the +40 class. Thanks to all the racers who came out on a hot Memorial Day weekend.

Staying cool before the race was a priority for the day.

Joliet’s District 17 MX Mid-Season State Championship Willmington, Illinois - July 22 By James & Rollanda Pinckard

J

oliet MX Park hosted the AMA District 17 Mid-Season State Championship on July 22nd. Saturday Joliet MX hosted the Chicago Mud run where they had to “make” mud. Saturday night into Sunday it started to rain and looked to be making mud for the motocross. The track crew went to work and put down load after load of sawdust on the track. When the first bike hit the track Sunday morning the track was perfect. With clouds overhead the track was perfect all day until the last moto when a rain storm hit making a slick mess, but the Joliet crew could not have done a better job the track and race was awesome! The threat of rain may have had some people

CYCLE USA, August 2018

not make the trip, but that was a huge mistake. The track was that good. In the 85Sr and Jr class riders were roosting and having fun today! In Sr, Owen Motorsports Kawasaki rider Brandon Bollino grabbed the holeshot with KTM rider Talan Zollers all over him. Bollino roosting like a sand buggy was able to hold off all charges from Zollers and take the moto win, with Coleton Elliott third and Kawasaki rider Max Williams fourth. In the second moto Zollers came out swinging setting down his own wall of roost for the pack and took the moto and overall win. Bollino finished second. Williams and his 555 Kawasaki tagged into third as Elliott cranked his KTM across the line to fourth.

In the 85Jr, KTM rider Ayden Oppenlander had things covered taking the first moto win with Yamaha rider Christopher Colantoni second, Hunter Savage third and Kayla Pogliano fourth. In the second moto Oppenlander wanted the Mid-Season Championship bad and took the moto win and overall. Savage worked into second for the moto and overall as Colantoni took third. The Princess Pogliano finished fourth. 50cc Oil Injected had Lincoln Paxton up to his old tricks. Hauling on his KTM is his best trick and he grabbed both starts, both moto wins and the overall. KTM rider Bentley Immormino finished a strong second in each moto. KTM rider Liam Neill finished the first moto third, but didn’t make the start in moto two. KTM rider Ryder Salas finished in the third spot and overall. The Mini Quad class also ran with this class and Yamaha rider Joey Schweiter took both moto wins ahead of Cristiano Barbonente. Supermini and 85 Open shared the track in their motos and these riders were flying! In Supermini, Husky rider Zennon Shain fresh back from a broken leg showed everyone he is healed and ready to roll. In the first moto Shain took the win with Brandon Bollino second and Talan Zollers third. In the moto two Shain was again in his groove taking the win ahead Bollino as Joey Elliott turned it up a notch to finish third. The Vintage class provided some of the best racing of the day. In the first moto Eddie Kline took the win with Josh Franklin second and Jerome Schutzenhofer third. Birthday Boy rider Zach Garrels finished fourth. In the second moto Franklin snuck to the front and the race was on all the way to the finish. Franklin and first moto winner

Kline were on it, charging away from the pack and fighting to the bitter end. Franklin took the win with Kline second as Garrels crossed in third, giving himself a great present. +50B/C was a much better race than the results showed. In the first moto Honda rider Chris White finished first with Andy Kooistra second and Joe Patton third. In the second moto it was a moving pack around the track. Patton led for a while‌ heck, I think everyone did. But at the end of the race it was the same finish order across the line and overall. The +60 class had some great racing. Honda rider David Thomas pulled the holeshot in the first moto and took the moto win. Charlie Spindel finished second with District 17 MX rep Gerhard Ward third and Husky rider Mike Abt fourth. In the second moto Thomas again jumped to the front and took the win. Ward, off to a better start, finished second for the moto and overall as Spindel finished third. Abt and his Husky finished fourth. +40B/C had another throwdown set of motos. In the first moto Cory Daugherty

pulled the holeshot and took off. KTM rider Roland Gomez started off third and was soon into second and glued to the back tire of Daugherty. They stayed that way until the finish making the set up for the second moto grand. The rider with the best seat in the house for the battle

was KTM rider Aaron Hawks. In the second moto Daugherty jumped to the front and again Gomez was in tow. With each rider faster in some sections than the other it was a race all the way to the end. These riders never let up - just great racing with Daugherty taking the win.

The Open B class first moto saw Honda rider Scott Kooistra take the win with Yamaha rider Josh Franklin second and Kyle Campbell third. In the second moto Tony Spizzirri was out front and trucking, taking the moto win giving him third overall for the day. Kooistra finished the moto second with Franklin third. When the scores were tallied Kooistra took the overall with Franklin second overall. 250C had excitement in many ways. At the time of the first moto a light rain started that didn’t last long and had everyone wishing away the rain to return later. And return it did - but this time it started when the class was sitting on the line in the last moto of the day, and unlike the earlier this rain was anything but light, soaking the track and riders. In the first moto Yamaha rider Charlie Deutsch was on it. Even with Eric Seibert and Ryan Crowley hot on his trail, Deutsch finished the moto first. In the second moto with the rain pouring down Deutsch was still the fastest taking the win. Seibert had his KTM again in second and this time was joined by Dylan Daugherty.

Seibert finished second for the moto and overall. Daugherty finished the moto third but his first moto score of eighth left him fourth overall. Third overall went to Crowley with a strong moto finish. Berm Benders Raceway Mike Moores Memorial Weekend Mora, Minnesota - June 24 By Angela John, photos by Kenton Knutson

O

n a warm summers day with lots of hugs the moto family of Mora’s Berm Benders Raceway united in remembrance of a long time racer and friend to many, Mike Moores. Berm Benders racers and regulars knew and loved this man who gave so much to our sport. To celebrate his life they organized this second annual weekend of racing and fun to raise funds for his favorite charity, The Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Minnesota. Saturday's motocross practice included a memorial lap. On Sunday before the first race a #MM62 Memorial tires down lap was led by Jake Loberg on Mike's #62 Kawasaki in honor of his dear friend. Off track events included a silent auction, “LemonMike” stand, spaghetti dinner and the highlighted live auction, all raising funds. Among the items up for bid were a home security system donated by 24/7 Security, pro donated jerseys including the much loved local celebrities Jeremy and Alex Martin, Christian Craig, some of Mike's personal collection of vintage jerseys and a jersey with private training lesson from Jake Loberg. Bidding was fierce and the patrons were generous. Stronger bonds and new memories of Mike were made banding together the entire track in a way that would have made him proud. Sponsors donated to the already 100% payout of the 250A, 450A 30A and 40A classes making an extra large purse and holeshot awards, drawing some of the area's fastest riders. 12

Sunday’s racing didn’t disappoint the many spectators. The gates were packed with fast guys for Open A’s first moto. Carefully chosen lines were prepped and knuckles were bumped as friends transitioned to competitors. Ronnie “Smooth” signaled the riders, they nodded, assumed the standard pounce position and the gate dropped. The pack was tight and first to the holeshot was Wisconsin resident #794 Bryce Backaus followed by Adam Deal, Jake Loberg, Nick Schnagl and number Mateo Johnson. Through out the first lap these five were so close you could throw a blanket over them. Loberg passed Deal and used his skills through the whoops to close in on Backaus. Over the next laps the two pulled away

from the others. Meanwhile behind them Schnagl made his move passing Deal for third. As the leaders hit the corner before the step up Loberg got his opportunity, launching himself into the lead. Behind them they were three wide in corners and over jumps as the battle continued. Big cheers resounded as Loberg stretched his lead. Moto one finished Loberg, Backaus and a whole race battle for third ended with Schnagl holding it over Johnson. Moto two started with Loberg taking the holeshot followed by Schnagl. Maus soon dropped Schnagl to third where hungry contender Johnson was waiting. Schnagl allowed Johnson and Backaus to move up to third and fourth. The biggest battle throughout most of the race was for third between Johnson and Backaus, going bar to bar at times. Their battle closed in on Maus. On the inside, on the outside, every line, every corner Johnson put in every effort and then got his chance coming into the whoops and passed Maus for second. Backaus soon got his chance as well and grabbed third. Backaus sets his sights Johnson through the whoops late in the moto and slid past for second. The race finished Loberg, Backaus, Johnson. The Mike Moores Memorial weekend was a great success with amazing racing, family fun and over $10,000 was handed over to the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Minnesota. All thanks to the staff and owners of Berm Benders Raceway, the many volunteers and sponsors and most importantly to a greatly missed man who loved motocross and loved to give. Everyone in attendance was very appreciative of all the extra effort that was put into the weekend and the opportunity it gave to reflect on what’s most important in life; family, friendship and motocross.

Rainy Weather Doesn’t Slow Racing at Range MX

Houghton, Michigan - June 30/ July 1 By Jeri Nyberg

W

ith a weekend forecast of temperatures in the 90s and a threat of thunderstorms, it was a roll of the dice what Mother Nature was going to dish out in the U.P. Even after the recent flooding Houghton, MI has experienced, the Range MX track was well prepped and ready for the double header AMA District 16 weekend. As seems to be tradition at Range MX, riders were able to hit the track on Friday for some laps of open practice to prepare for a full weekend of racing. Continuous thunder and lightning Friday evening ultimately led to major downpours Saturday morn-

Morrison rounded out the top five. Revolinski and West were able to start to reel in Tammi and put the pressure on for the remaining two laps. All three were pushing for the position and came up to the 90 foot table top three wide. At the checkered flag, it would be Revolinski taking second place with Tammi and West behind. Moto two again began with Tammi out front, but this time it was West on his rear tire. As the group settled themselves out in the first lap, Revolinski took over second place and Bukovich worked his way around Morrison for fourth. As Tammi started to pull away, Revolinski and West were also able to break away from Bukovich and Morrison. West made it around Revolinski through the sweeping sand corner and locked down second place to the checkers. Morrison put his sights on Revolinski, but it wasn’t enough to get around him before the finish. Tammi grabbed the big overall with 3-1 finishes. One of the fastest moving races Cale Huotari and Matthew Aho had good battles all weekend. of the day came from the 250B riding, delaying the start of racing just over ers. They put down some quick laps as two hours. When the rains trickled away Jonah Dowd led the pack with Dustin and a few track repairs were made, riders Raffaelli not far behind. The first lap saw were rewarded with a sunny afternoon a lot of shuffling of positions as Jake and good track conditions. Denison fell to the back of the pack and Once the track was re-groomed and Michael Bukovich hit the double and puddles were drained, racing was ready jumped past Brandon Revolinski as the to kick off for the afternoon. only needing a little more time to have made a run. Rounding out the top three was Bukovich. When the gate dropped for the second time Dowd was out front with Raffaelli and Denison behind. Though the order remained the same through the end of the race, you could tell that the riders were really giving it their all to come out on top. Saturday ended with a game of dodgeball in the starting line to help kick off a nice night at the track. On Sunday, after a quick sprinkle right before practice, those who braved the weather found an even better track than the day before. Riders were saying how prime the dirt ended up being, and the overcast weather kept it from drying out. The riders in the 125 Open class were a carbon copy of those in 125Jr, so the excitement and competition carried forward though all four of their motos. In moto one, the Yamahas of Andrew Combs and Cale Huotari rounded the corner first, with Combs out front. Bailey Tuoriniemi was able to get around Huotari in the second corner, and in the back section Preston Maki was also able to put the pass on Huotari. As Combs started to break away, Maki was starting to catch up to Tuoriniemi. Huotari was able to hold his own in fourth place, and rounding out the top five wase Matthew Aho. Moto two again had Huotari sweeping the outside line of the start to try to overtake Combs. Combs was able to hold the

lead and Huotari held second as Tuoriniemi again was on a mission to advance. Huotari held him off until Tuoriniemi finally was able to jump past him on a single. While Combs again was pulling away, Maki was making his way

up from the back of the pack and had gotten around Aho and was charging for Huotari. The two ran tire to tire for the last lap and it was photo finish at the checkers, with Huotari just edging out Maki. Huotari finished third overall.

The NEW Motosplat MX Mountain, Wisconsin - May 27 By Doug Forstner, Photos by Kaila Forstner

N

ot too often in the modern mx world do we get the opportunity to ride and race a new mx track. In an era where tracks are closing, it was a breath of fresh air to hear that District 16 was going to have a new facility to race at for 2018. Fantasy Moto crew packed up all their equipment and moved it north to the Motosplat facility, including the starting gate from Wittenberg. As I was walking the track the night before the race, I told my daughter I couldn’t remember the last time I had to walk a track to learn where it goes. So either, I’ve raced all over or I’m just losing my memory with age. Either way, it was pretty cool to walk the track and try to learn the long circuit that enjoys two minute plus lap times. Shawn O’Brien owner of the property decided to offer the district the opportunity to share in his private practice track back in 2017. Needless to say, a bunch of work went into the place to make it ready. Putting in a gate, proper safety measures, a fence around the track, widening of the track, making a pit area and everything

else that was needed to make this a go. The plan was to hold an open ride day on Friday, a non-points race on Saturday to work out the bugs and a D16 mx race on Sunday for a fun filled Memorial Day

weekend. The race was replacing Pine Ridge Raceway which had held the Memorial Day weekend race for the past 18 years. Motosplat is near Mountain, WI and has a dirt similar to the old Sugar Camp facility, a little north woods hard packed along with sand to make a long flowing type European style track. A nice combo that allows the track to get good and rough along with long lap times. Combine that with summer temps in the ninety degree plus range and riders were about to get their money’s worth. The spectators also had it good after watching the battle in 250B class. The top two riders in the class for the day basically checked out from the rest of the class. However, it was a combined gate drop with 250A so fans got to see some awesome battles on the track at the same time. The top two B riders were putting down lap times at about the pace as the A guys. In moto one, Hayden Waelchli pulled the holeshot and the pack was right there to put on the pressure. Bryce Hansen was able to get into the lead on the first lap while Waelchli then ran second until Carter Biese made his way ahead and started to pressure Hansen, set-

Austin Hamburger was leading the 250A class and the mix of A and B riders together made it tough to determine positions at times, but eventually it got sorted out. Josh Philbrick made his way past Hamburger for the lead in A as Bubba Ponton rounded out the top three. On the white flag Ponton moved into the number two spot behind Philbrick. Ponton and Philbrick diced up front in 250A as Michael Schernick rounded out the top three in moto two. Philbrick got the win and overall. 250C was a pretty full gate as always and it was the #17 of Blain Youngthunder from Black River Falls who pulled the holeshot and tried his best to run away from the pack. By the end of lap one Youngthunder was in Carter Biese all over Bryce command followed by Josh Hansen as the two put on Kruit, Cody Bourdeau, Max quite a show in the B classes.

Kruit rounded out podium with his 3-4. Darga made it up to sixth in the moto for fourth overall. At the end of the day, the water trucks and equipment went right back out on the track and shaped it all up again for an open ride to celebrate Memorial Day. Pro Track Challenge Annual Spring Creek event draws 600 plus entries Millville, Minnesota - July 22 By Rolfe Otterness

H

ordes of eager amateur motocross riders migrated to the Spring Creek Park facility this July weekend in a bid to grab some glory on the same track that the factory pro riders would be contesting round seven of the national AMA championship. Friday before the pro event featured the annual Donny Schmit Memorial race and on Sunday some of the pro track route was melded in with the regular track terrain to create the Pro Track Challenge. Rain unfortunately left the track in sorry shape overnight on Thursday so the Friday event was hampered by some tough conditions, although outstanding efforts by the facility’s crew yielded a rideable track. Sunday saw sunny, dry conditions so the track shaped up well and the rider entries were up over Friday so this report will concentrate on the Pro Track Challenge which featured around 630 entries. For the Pro Track challenge the extra long sand section at the end of the sand wash was added and also the lower portion of Mount Martin, up to the triple jump then across to the downhill portion. The far upper reaches of the hill were deemed out of reach for the medic crew so they were left out of the equation. Josh Boaz has been one of the toughest competitors on the Spring Creek track this year and as the 250B class was dropped for moto one he quickly grabbed the lead with Payton Harrison and Austin Nelson falling in behind him. Boaz’s pace was so quick he left the pack behind and started catching the A class leaders who had been double dropped in the same moto. Very possibly Boaz was turning the quickest lap times of the day. Harrison’s pace was pretty good too as he maintained second through the moto with Ezra Graumann grabbing third from Nick Wuertzer on the last lap. Nelson and Shane Halverson were very close for fourth and fifth with Wuertzer having a

tough last lap and pulling in for sixth. Nelson blasted out the holeshot in moto two on his two-stroke but Boaz was close at hand and quickly snared the lead, once again performing his disappearing act. Harrison tussled briefly with Nelson to secure second by the end of lap one. Nelson found himself challenged then as Ruger Brown attacked and took over third. The moto ended with Boaz holding a massive lead over Harrison. Brown was third and Nelson held on for fourth under massive pressure from Wuertzer on the last lap. Linkin Sarauer charged to the front of the pack as the Women’s class hit the track for their first moto. Jacqueline Riess slotted into second for lap one, under attack as Marissa Polencheck was challenging. Lap two saw them change order and they maintained to the checkers for second and third. Shayna Lier rode a nice race for fourth over Krista Pyburn, as Sarauer had a pretty dominant ride for the win. Pyburn shot off the line to holeshot the second moto only to have Sarauer displace her almost immediately as they exited turn one. Polencheck and Riess surged by to nab second and third on lap one and from there on the order remained the same. Sarauer secured the win with a decent lead over Polencheck who in turn had a bit of a margin over Riess. Pyburn was back a bit for fourth over Lier as they crossed the finish line. Tanner Schlegel shot out front to lead the 65cc 10-11 class as the little guys hit the track. Schlegel is getting to be a regular at the front of the pack and he proceeded to check out while behind him a battle over second developed with Vince Harens and Zaine Ran22

dall duking it out. Harens pulled out a few more bike lengths of a lead over Randall on the last lap to secure second and Kyler Hagedorn was fourth over Ethan Rennie. In moto two Schlegel

again dominated with a big gap at the flag. Randall had a solid second with Harens a no-show for the moto so third went to Hagedorn with Aaron Aasen fourth over Izaac Zimmer.

Gavin Janovsky snared a couple trophies including the highly desireable Donny Schmit Memorial version.

Heat on at Meadow Valley Hare Scramble sees temps climb to 100 degrees Millville, Minnesota - June 17 By Paul Otto

H

ot, Hot, Hot. That what was on everyone’s mind whether racing, spectating or volunteering time at the race. With Temp’s nearing 100 riders were faced with another obstacle besides the trails. Do you push it at the beginning, middle or end? What about riding a steady pace to finish. Everyone reacts to the heat in different ways and that’s what each rider had to know going to the line. Use your knowledge to keep yourself safe and finish the race. Some didn’t strategize and completely exhausted themselves on the first lap, putting themselves and their results at risk.

PeeWee class staged and ready to race

Hosting the event were the Straight Arrow Enduro Riders. This was their second year at the Meadow Valley facility so they had a better understanding of the land and put together some good trails for the riders. The heat wasn’t the only factor in this race as District 16 was also on hand for a dual meet. When the shotgun fired it was the Premier riders that took to the course first. Showing strong dominance was D16 riders as they took four of the top five places with the top three getting an extra lap, all aboard Kawasakis. No battling amongst the top three as Wyatt McGrath took the lead leaving Bodee Oneil and Timothy Kristiansen to settle for second and third.

Luckily for D23 the PeeWee class redeemed the MN name by taking most of the top spots. Boede Wallner did sneak in for second, but Jacob Peters out-rode everyone taking the top spot. Brady Brixen rode solid by finishing in third. Parents couldn’t keep their excitement in check as the Micro class had them standing on edge as Liam Brown took the lead, then Charlie Anderson claimed it on the second and third lap, but wait Cole Montgomery wanted a turn taking lap four. We all know kids really don’t like to share so Brown claimed the lead in lap five and had his hands full for the next nine laps until he dropped the spot to hard charging Beau Garetson. Brown stalked him for the next eight laps, only seconds behind. Myles Ilstrup didn’t get his shot at leading a lap, but his consistency got him on the podium at race end. The Micro class had a great battle between Tatum Swygman and Carter Niedzielski. These two battled back and forth leaving nothing on the table. Brooks Laubmeier started out strong getting a taste of leading but in the end settled for third. With the C class ramping up to start at noon so was the temperature. Twenty-two riders completed just one lap and ten did not register any completed. Jacob Stephas is having a great year in Open C but was finding himself as the best man in the overall. Meadow Valley was a different story as he stood at the alter as the overall winner. It didn’t look promising as Stephas rounded lap one in fourteenth overall but putting down the fastest lap times in the second and third (final) lap put him on the top of the podium. Walter Crum in the 250C class took second overall and first in his class leaving fellow classmate Ryan Seamans to settle for third overall and second in class. 200C saw another Crum CYCLE USA, August 2018 25

up towards the front as Luther Crum took fourth overall and first in 200C. L Crum was the fastest in class, but Miranda Tweeton used her motocross skills taking the lead off the start and leading the pack around the mx track before succumbing to Crum. A little off the pace was another young lady. Aundrea Artmann rode an uneventful but steady race for third. Now that the temperature was at its peak it was time to see what the A/B riders are made of. Well, looking at the results 29 riders didn’t finish the race. Colton Thompson jumped out to an early lead for three laps before handing it over to Even Sheff. Sheff started his day off a little ruff but put his head down putting in consistence fast laps. Sheff stole the B class show with a win in the Open B class and B Overall. Thompson on the other hand still took home some gold winning the 250B class. Third, fourth and fifth overall had the sweet sound of the two-stroke singing in the air. Kyle Magnuson took third overall and first in 200B, followed by Austin McCoy and Nash Kirchoff. This marks Magnuson’s first win on the season. Jarrett Loegering didn’t let the heat affect his race, taking the win in the 250A class and more impressively the overall A win. Not only can Matt Van Dyke sell you an ATC toy hauler quick, he can also find his way around the track fast. His friends say he’s just in a hurry to get back to the comforts of the trailer which did make sense since it had A/C. Van Dyke took second overall and first in the Vet A class where he seems to have a handle on things. Third overall and also first in 200C was Jayme French. French is having a break out year and is really meshing with his new KTM 150. The smaller displacement doesn’t seem to be holding him back at all. AA had a first-time winner. After breaking his leg last year Luke Wilder set two goals for the 2018 season. One was to win a AA race and the other was to qualify for the six days. Well he can check the win off the list. Unfortunately, he will have to wait another year on the six days 26

adventure as he came up short of his goal. Long time D16 rider JD Friebel crossed the river into MN but came up short on the win. Still a good showing for the veteran racer. Matt Lindeberg cut his race

number in half by placing third on the day. A little fun fact for everyone. Four cousins took home six first place finishes. 200C Luther Crum and 250C Walter

Crum are brothers and Open C and overall C Jacob Stephas along with AA winner and overall winner Luke Wilder are all first cousins. They have truly made racing a family affair. Not to mention that having 4 "horses in the race" keeps things very exciting. It was Luther's first 1st place finish, Walter's first 1st place finish, and Luke's first 1st place AA finish and Jacob's first C overall win this season. Although the weather wasn’t ideal for racing it was great to see everyone come out and give it a go. Special thanks go out to the Straight Arrow Enduro Riders for putting on the event. Another Great Nuke Race! Byron, Illinois - July 1 By Josh Rud, ShiftOnePhotography.com

T

he Nuclear series is well underway out at Byron’s Motosports Park. After battling the extremely wet months and a cancelled race thrown into the mix, this weekend was looking a little grim as well with rain coming down most of the week. Luckily things calmed down before the weekend and Sunday turned out to be a great day of racing. The track soaked up a lot of the water and

East Dubuque, IL’s William Tucker went 2-2 for second overall in 85cc 9-11.

32

made conditions prime for some fast motocross action. Towards the end of the day the rain hit hard for the last few motos... and while that sucked - we had a great day up to that point for sure. There was a great turn out this weekend and you can start to see all the ongoing efforts going into the prep of the track. With the clouds coming and going all day +40B/C was on the line for their first moto. Off the line Jeremy Barone was out front, pulling a good lead coming

around the tower into the sweeper with two Wisconsinites, Brian Tobianski and Frank Colavita behind him into the first set of jumps. From there the battle was on with Doug Harms swinging wide around the outside from fourth to take over second, moving Tobianski to third. That didn’t last long though as Tobianski found some quick lines through the back section to retake second by the end of the lap. Harms was close behind for several laps while Russell Smith had been riding clean and put himself in position for a pass. Smith was able to get under Harms while going around the tower to take over third. Another lap went by with Barone still in the lead getting tested by Tobianski as the race was coming to close. As the came down the final hill Tobianski was able to take over the lead and come across the line for the win. Barone secured second with Smith in third. The second moto later in the day ended with the same results out front, giving Tobianski the overall for the day as Barone put in another solid moto for second. The next action packed race was out on the track with 125cc lining up. In the first moto it was Garrett Ward out of Mendota, IL taking the win followed by Deven Fell and Spencer Whitney. The gates dropped to the second moto with Cole Dekker jumping out front on his KTM with Fell and Ward hunting him down. They came into the sweeper with Whitney going hard through the inside to jump into second with Ward right behind him as Fell dropped back. After coming back around from the first lap and down the hill to the finish area Dekker was holding a good lead while Fell had got back into second with Whitney battling hard as well. Not to be counted out Ward on the move in fourth making passes until the last lap was coming to a close, and he had pushed up into the lead. Fell kicked it up as well to grab second with Dekker now in third. The race came to a wild end with Ward crossing in first to take the win and overall, Fell second overall and Dekker in third. Towards the end of the day +30B/C was out on the track trying to finish the races before the rain got there. In their

the holeshot with Brandon Hastings and Slager right behind him. Heading around the tower Hastings had a good rut and jumped out into the lead moving Lingle into second. The laps rolled on with the

top three keeping close looking for an open line to get ahead. Hastings held on to the lead until the last lap came around and Slager turned it on from third getting around Lingle and finally Hastings, just in time for another win. Slager held on out front for the remaining lap while Lingle was able to move into second putting Hastings back to third. It was a great day out at Motosports Park with everything running smooth as ever. The weather was a concern for everyone, but as I’ve seen over and over, some rain is always good out at Motosports Park. The track really shapes up nice with a good soak. The lines were getting cut in really nice all day. The season is moving right by all around the district and it’s already looking to be a great year for the Nuke Series. Regardless of what mother nature serves up, it will always be a great time at Motosports Park. Hot Action at Megacross Mendota, Illinois - July 21 By Josh Rud, ShiftOnePhotography.com

I

t feels like July has went by so fast, with Megacross kicking the end of the month off with another great race in the books. Once again the weather was threatening everything this weekend, which has happened far too often this year. It had rained a majority of the day on Friday, but some sun and nicer weather was around Saturday to allow the track to dry up very nicely. The news of the evening was the pretty significant changes to the track. The large triple along the fence has now been replaced with a new section including a longer straight, new whoops section and a large bowl turn. Along with some other tweaks, it was well received. All the riders seemed to have nothing but good things to say and it definitely opened up some new lines for racing. There was a lot of great racing out here tonight with some help from the new layout and a lot of riders going hard. A great

race came in 125cc with passes being made the entire race. The gate dropped to Eli Tetzlaff jumping out front around the first barrel leaving Hunter Billingsly and Garrett Ward to chase him down. As they went around the track checking out lines and looking for opportunities Gavin Sienkiewicz was one of them coming up from third to pass Ward in the Bowl turn. They fought back and forth before Ward was able to get back into third over the table tops. The charge continued for Ward as he was picking up speed finding the good lines and got around Billingsly over the wall jump. From there Ward continued to track down Tetzlaff who had

built up a bit of a lead. Coming into the white flap lap Tetzlaff made a mistake and pushed wide leaving room for Ward to dart through and take over out front. Tetzlaff was able to keep second but they came across the line after an awesome race with Ward taking the win and Billingsly rounding out the top three. Out there next was 65 SR. Off the line it was Tanner Haddon with the holeshot followed by Nate Bierbom. Preston Zollers was on the move going wide around the barrel turn into the wall to take over second and was then side by side with Haddon going into the whoops. Haddon pulled ahead through the back

section before Zollers fought back using the outside of the berm before the table tops to get enough speed to take the lead. The laps finished off with Zollers taking the win, Haddon in second and Bierbom hold on to third for the night. 30A was another great race tonight with everyone going for it hard. They took off the line to Charlie Buffum jumping out front with Chad Johnston and Johnathon Six right behind him going into the first turn. They hit the barrel with Tom Hofmaster railing the outside from fourth, jumping the wall to grab second with Six able to follow the line and slip into third pushing Johnson back to fourth. Charging from a bad start next Kevin Markwardt getting into the mix, passing Six and then Hofmaster to get into second. Hofmaster wasn’t taking things lightly, charging back through some really fast lines to retake second and then first, dropping Buffum to second as Six took over third. Six was pushing Buffum with Markwardt now right behind him looking for a line to get by as well. Six went to the outside coming into the tables to take over second leaving Markwardt on the back tire of Buffum heading down the straight. Markwardt got the tire in on the inside and was able to take over third through the whoops as they headed to the checkered flag. After a very intense race it was Hofmaster with the impressive win, Six second and Markwardt third. With only a few months of racing left the points are getting tight in several classes as everyone is looking to lock things in for the year, it will only get more interesting from here. It was another great night of Megacross racing with the track holding up fantasticly throughout the evening. Keep an eye out for the upcoming events and be sure to get out and get some racing in under the lights. Results on page 39 Corbin Lenaway charging to fifth place in Open B. Fly Showdown Series Event

Open B class first turn.

Casey, Illinois - July 1 By James & Rollanda Pinckard

T

he temperature and humidity were soaring on July 1 at Lincoln Trail Motosports for Round 5 of the Fly Racing Showdown series. Soaring as well were the spirits of the racers who came to hit the Bomber track, because LTM owner Tim Jackson worked in ten semi-truck loads of sawdust since the last race. As a matter of fact, Jackson has added in 10 loads before each Bomber race this season. He said it’s expensive but he does it for the riders. At LTM it wasn’t just the faces of the jumps that were built up, so was the excitement of the spectators when the first race of the day came to the start. Open A and Open B all but filled the gate, and the roar when those throttles were twisted just before the gate drop brought everyone to the fences. First drop went to the A’s, and from the start it was the Honda of Blake Copeland out front, with Billy Foznock in tow. Never letting those two out of his sights was young gun, 18 yearold Evan Faucett on his Yamaha. Nothing was stopping Faucett today. He got by Foz, then Copeland on the third lap. Foznock found the line around Copeland 38

and took second for the moto. Anthony Krivi settled for 4th. Staying steady behind that 4-pack of leaders was the KTM of Ryan Combs and the Husky of firsttime-“A”-racer Jason Gepford. Gepford’s raced D17 since he was old enough to sit on a bike, and his first experience at the A line showed this kid has what it takes to compete. Staying with the front half of this class was not easy, but Gepford took off his helmet at the end of the moto and had nothing but smiles for his dad/mechanic John Gepford. Second moto for the A group saw a lot of action, but for Fosnock it wasn’t the good kind. Faucett, Fosnock and James Cooper led the field out of the first turn. It wasn’t long before Cooper came to the front, Faucett staying tight on his back wheel… and Fosnock was out of the race with a flat tire. The first lap was a drag race of blue bikes with Cooper, Faucett and Krivi barely getting more than a full bikelength between each other. Just like the first moto, Faucett led the entire field for the entire second half of the race. Krivi found his way around Cooper and moved up to second, but coming in hot was the Kawasaki of Parker Smith. Smith’s ninth

place finish in moto one was not going to be repeated. He had a rough start in this second moto, clearing the hole shot line well in the back of the pack, but he charged throughout the race, passing everyone except Faucett to take the checker in second ahead of Krivi. Faucett took the top step on the podium with his 1-1, Krivi’s 4-3 finishes gave him second overall. How did Gepford end his inaugural A race? He finished 6th and 7th in his motos, giving him a very solid 6th overall, showing he’s definitely in the right class. When I asked him what surprised him most, he said “how hard everyone races the whole time. The intensity is higher. It’s a lot more fun and I really liked it!” In Open B, no one was more excited to be there than Heyworth, Illinois’ Brock Shelton, who was back on a bike after having taken a couple years off. Shelton was a little slow off the start in moto one, but worked his way past the Hondas of Chance Trigalet and Tristen Binz to catch up to the leaders, Kody Lorenez on his Husky and Bodhi Parsons on his Yamaha. Moto one ended with Lorenez, Parsons and Shelton going 1-2-3.

Dan Hall owned the +50B/C class today.

Moto two was where the fun was for Open B though. Off the start Shelton had found his race groove and rocketed to the front. Lorenez finally found a line around Shelton in the final lap and took first in both motos for the overall. Trigalet was shadowing Lorenez the entire race, including the pass around Shelton, and his 4-2 finishes were good enough to him second overall. One of the big D17 changes this season was to some of the age classes. No more straight +40, +45 and +50, but instead it’s +40A and B/C, and +50A and B/C. Despite the pre-season grumbling (and racers are always grumbling about something) this change has made for improved numbers at the gate and more fun for racers. There were sixteen +50 guys at the gate, split about even between the A and the B/C. +50B/C has seen battles all season. Dan Hall would not be beaten today though. Joe Patton on his Honda got the jump on Hall, but Hall was on the top of his game, taking the lead half way through the race and never looking back. Fighting for third were the Honda of Greg Ensign and the KTM of Ted Maxedon. Ensign started out ahead of Maxedon but that didn’t last, as Maxedon stayed hard on the throttle to secure 3rd. Second moto for these guys started with Hall’s Holey. Following Hall it was Greg Ensign who beat Patton to the first corner and the race was on, with Ensign and Patton staying pretty steady with each other but behind Hall. Patton focused, sent it and beat Ensign to the corner after the big downhill. Now with Hall in his sights Patton gave it all he had, but “this day belonged to Dan” as Patton said later. Kensington Hare Scramble

C class off and running

Kensington, Minnesota - June 24 By Paul Otto, Photos Bennett Bosire

T

he forecast predicted some rain which may have discourage the fair-weather riders from coming out to race. Those that showed up know that the weather man is usually off and were right as usual in their predictions. Although the skies opened up in the morning race, it really wasn’t a factor as a little moisture was welcomed to keep the dust down. The Kensington race is located at Andes Tower Hills Ski Resort and has all the amenities one could wish for at a race. Great food, ample parking/ camping and oh the trails are solid. Packed with fun flowing terrain for all ages and abilities. Starting off the festivities were the Premier riders. The Premier class gets to run a portion of the C course along with the Mini course giving them around 33 to 55minute lap times. We had some great racing out from with the top six battling for the lead. Tate Tromblay rounded lap one

in first but must have had some issues as he didn’t complete the second and final lap. Bummer for him but I’m sure he’ll be back to battle it out at the next race. When the checker flag made its presence Cooper Anderson climbed his way to the

front where he stood on the top box with a first-place smile leaving Charlie Siebenaler and Travis Illies for second and third respectively. Girls 9-15 gave it a good show proving racing isn’t just for the boys. Madison

Herzog had a bad first lap but put down the hammer in the second and final lap with the fastest lap for the class. Unfortunately, time was not on her side for a third lap leaving Allison Siebenaler your winner and Cora Reschke with third. Stone Petta took the wind right out of the sail for the spectators whom where looking for an exciting PeeWee race, ulling to the front and checking out. Eric Niedzielski followed suit with his own solo race for second followed by Thomas Hanson doing the same. Parents please explain to your children that we need closer racing to keep the crowds entertained otherwise I’ll be leaving my pom poms at home. Our Micro/ Macro riders know how to give us an entertaining race - banging bars, passing back and forth. Usually, not on purpose but either way it’s entertaining for the crowd. Decked out like their favorite riders with sticker kits looking like factory riders these kids mean business. Cole Sutherland played possum for five laps before stealing the lead from Charlie Anderson in Macro. These two snuck in before the 45-minute cutoff time getting an extra lap over their competi-

tors. Myles Ilstrup out of Elk River showed great consistency which led him to the third spot on the box. Carter and Adam Niedzielski gave the Micro class all they could handle. This must be hard for the parents to not show which of their kids is their favorite while cheering them on. Landen Maclaughlin almost spoiled the brother duo putting himself between the them for most of the race before Adam got by putting him back to third. Usually, when the clock strikes noon its time to eat but at the races it’s time for the big bikes to line up. The C class takes a first look at “most” of the course, as we save some more challenging sections for the more advanced A/B riders. Jason Ryan will be riding more of these courses next year as the 250C rider has won three out of four C overall’s. Luther Crum, second overall on the day and first in 200C will be right there with him as he has been placing up front in the overalls and winning his 200C class. Jacob Stephas is undefeated in Open C with another win today and he as well will get the bump with his finishes. Most articles are written about all the fast guys that win and although Jim Er-

ickson did just that in the Golden Masters class, the 70+ year old placed 98th out of 116 riders. Not to demoralize anyone but to inspire what he and others are accomplishing at their perspective ages. I think most of us can only dream we will be doing this at that age. Onward to the B class. Ethan Sheff continues to take command of Open B and once again ran away with the overall B award. Sheff must have gotten a message on the pit board to pick up his pace. Cutting two minutes off his lap time on the final lap brought him from fifth to first. Richard Robinson had his best overall finish with a second. Leading two of the three laps, Robinson still won Vet B, extending his points lead over Chris Stiefel. Derek Kulzer was back on hand after a two-race hiatus. Not skipping a beat Kulzer took third overall and the win in 250B over Ben Osowski and Colton Thompson. Joseph Goth racing 200B only rides the Kensington Hare Scramble because its his favorite and claims it to be the best one of the year. Schmidt took home first in Senior A and fifth overall. Brady Kittock got his first win as an A rider, taking the win in the 200A class over Jayme French. AA had some controversy as riders were not happy that the race was what they called “unfairly shortened”. Due to the course length the checkers were thrown before the two-hour mark which is within the means of the promoter. Per AMA rules the leader is supposed to get the checkered flag not a specific time. That being said if another lap would have been done it would have added another hour and twenty minutes to the race. Tempers flare when lack of knowledge of the rules and assuming that what’s been done in the past is correct. Now that time has passed, the consensus is that riders just want consistency. The question now is how to do that. It’s not as easy as it seems. There are a lot of variables that come into play that people just don’t know or realize. Logan Kittock had a flawless race pulling his lead each lap over last week’s first time winner Luke Wilder. Both riders had the edge over Matt Lindeberg who took the final spot on the box for the secclass racer Brooke Schmidt ond week in a row. Fourth Women’s racing through some fun single track.

Off-Road Weekend in Byron Motosports Park plays host to Sprint Enduro/ Hare Scramble Byron, Illinois - July 14-15 By Austin Wells, Photos by BriAnn Wells

ain always seems to be a threat this weekend every year and 2018 was no different. Ryan Moss and the Forest City Riders crew had a couple awesome courses set up for the two-day off-road event held at Byron Motosports Park. Saturday delivered an AMA District 16/ 17 enduro ran as a sprint format and Sunday being an AMA District 16/ 17 hare scramble. Heavy rains during the end of the week going into Saturday’s enduro made the ground too saturated to run the full sprint enduro format. Instead it was cut short to only one section, approximately 4-5 miles in length and included most of the motocross track and some tight timber. Each rider was to complete the “test” four times and scores would be added together. The riders with the least amount of time scored stood atop the podium. The first test proved to be a little slimy, but to everyone’s surprise, the dirt tacked up nicely and it turned out to be a great

afternoon. The fastest man of the day and the rider with the lowest score went to reigning District 17 enduro champion Blake Ryan, a mere 11 seconds ahead of fellow KTM rider Tanner Whipple. Husqvarna rider Austin Wells finished third. Overall A went to Jarred Hall out of the A class. Scott Rohlfing and TJ Nees finished 2-3. Jhadyn Walker put a stomping on the B class by taking the win by nearly three minutes. A beautiful morning started off a great day for the Greg Moss Memorial Hare Scramble on Sunday. The temperature was a cool mid 70s and the sun was shining as the 50cc classes to hit the track. Owen Gomez on his Honda took home yet another win in the 50cc 4-6 class. Wyatt Johnson out of Monmouth, IL took second place and Cassie Fairfield finished third. Travis Lentz won the 50cc 7-8 class aboard his Husqvarna with Cooper Duff and Cooper Lair close behind. Austin Burns ran away with the 65cc Beginner class win while Ashten Tritsch and Kade Heilman had to settle for 2nd

Riley Walters was the only woman to make five laps in the Women’s class. Darcie Graham finished second aboard her Honda. In the morning big bike race, Elijah Berryman took home the overall win out of the 200C class. Cody Stewart finished about two minutes behind ahead of Gavin Minnaert. Lucas Roberts topped the twenty-seven rider Open C class. Wisconsin’s Noah Dalsing finished second and Michael Costello third. Wally Mika took home the big trophy in the +60 class. In the afternoon race, Cody Barnes reigned victor for D17 in the District 16 vs District 17 shootout by taking the overall win. Barnes completed eight laps in the 1 hour 45 minute race, the only rider to do so. Barnes also accomplished this on his Beta 125cc. Suzuki rider Adam Bonneur finished second, leading Cole Zuidema, Austin Wells and JD Friebel, the top Wisconsin rider. AA rider Eric Mischler rode to fourth place in the Enduro.

Jarred Hall edged out TJ Nees for the Open A win by only seven seconds. In +30B, Derek Roberts took the top spot, followed by Husqvarna rider Chris Mroczkowski and Matt Ellermets. A Fantastic Aztalan MX After two rain-outs already this season, everyone was excited for motocross to return with a nice day in Lake Mills. Lake Mills, Wisconsin - July 8 Aztalan Cycle Club

A

fter a rain-out in April, then the mess of rain that cancelled the Pro-Am race (well most of it) in June, sunny skies and perfect temps were just what everyone was looking forward to when the track opened back up for this early July motocross. To help bring on a few extra riders, this was a District 16 points race, rescheduled from that April event. Since we brought up the rain-outs, we should give some credit where it is due for the decisions made back at the June event. The pits were full following a rare open practice and the new racing Saturday night. Very early Sunday morning

the skies opened up and simply dumped on the facility, enough so that cancelling the race was an obvious decision. That said, this was a Pro-Am and several riders had made significant efforts to be here and race for those points and extra payout. The Aztalan Cycle Club offered those riders the option - race if they wanted to. This was huge, as all the same expense of a full day’s event applies once bikes get on the track. Insurance, ambulance... all as if it was a full day. The club held the Pro-Am classes as committed to, at their expense.... and took care of those riders. That was an impressive sign of their dedication to the sport and all the riders, and they deserve recognition for doing so.

Smiles and trophies.... a sign of another good race day for these 50Sr and Jr class riders.

CYCLE USA, August 2018

Back to this month’s racing.... it was great. The track was well prepped as always. Mother nature did her part, and the riders entertained all us spectators very well all day. One of the earlier groups on the track came from a combined moto of +25 riders. The A class riders took a separate gate drop and Nicholas Pellmann led Aaron Smith and Aaron Stroebel right away off the start. The good jump out front was used well as Pellmann held on for the win. In the second moto, Smith made it to the front with Pellmann looking for a way around. Half way through the second lap, Pellmann found his chance out back and finished the lap in the lead. This set the final order, Pellmann going 1-1 for the overall.

Germantown, WI’s Stephen Kopplin grabbed the holeshot in the B class. As a freight train of riders went into the barn section on the first lap, Kopplin bobbled just a little as he went to use an incorrect line on part of the track that had been changed, dropping back behind a charging Nicholas Czechowicz. Kopplin slipped to fourth as Czechowicz rode hard to extend his lead, now being pursued by Nate White and Eric Leach. Late in the moto White closed up on Czechowicz to make it interesting before they crossed the line. Kopplin rode well to finish fourth after a two lap full press from fifth place finisher Michael Fiorentino in the sixteen rider class. In the second moto Kopplin had another great jump off the line but gave up a couple spots in the first corner. Jacob Oldenburg took the lead over the first jumps and then ran off for the win. He was scored into last place in moto one after leaving with the wrong gate drop. Czechowicz had a good start and quickly took over second as Leach worked up to

third ahead of Kopplin. Czechowicz ran a good race to grab the overall with his 1-2 motos. Leach’s consistent and smart

riding put him in second overall (3-3) ahead of Kopplin who also connected two good motos (4-5). White struggled a bit in this moto as he finished back in eighth, but combined with the second place earlier he still grabbed fourth overall ahead of Kristopher Korn (10-4). The combined A and B/C classes of the +40 riders put on a good show with another multiple gate drop moto. All combined, there was an impressive forty-one riders on the track. In the A class, Jeff Bennett grabbed the holeshot and never looked back, leaving some good racing behind. Todd Mayer held second all the way with Andy Bowman in third after lap one. Bowman was under a lot of pressure, eventually finishing ninth. Roy Nafzger put on a good charge to get by Joe Schuster and then stand up to a good back and forth battle with Frank Weiss for third at the checkered flag. Weiss finishing fourth ahead of Schuster and Marc Ottenad. In the second moto, Mayer grabbed a big holeshot with Bennett behind and the race was one. Quick Wrench/ Sportland2 backed Bennett after the moto, “It was an awesome battle out there as Todd Mayer and I were banging bars right from the beginning. then I stalled it in the scoring corners. I caught up and got lucky when he went down in the sand corner. The first moto was fun as I got out front, but this was more exciting. The track is awesome.” As Mayer regrouped for second, John Stewart stepped it up to finish third after his first moto eighth. Ottenad did his usual... working up on his small bore Husqvarna to finish fourth, this time ahead of Schuster. Mayer after the moto, “I didn’t realize Jeff was gaining on me and then I made

the mistake and fell in the sand turn. The track held up really well and it was a lot of fun. I’d like to thank my wife for her support.” In the 40B/C class Brad Yde grabbed an all important holeshot just ahead of Jim Beckman. Beckman dropped back a few bike lengths, then charged up and pushed Yde several times through the moto... always trying to make something happen. Yde held on for the win as Brian Tobianski worked past Paul Bloyer for third place late in the moto. Fitchburg,

WI’s James Torgerson put in a solid ride to work up to fifth place on the last lap. The second moto saw three different leaders and a complete flip-flop from moto one. Yde grabbed the holeshot but gave the lead up to Beckman before the opening lap was done. Meantime, Tobianski was on a roll, getting around Yde in the second lap as well. The three stayed close before that momentum Tobianski had built helped him take over the lead. Late in the moto Yde was still fighting and eventually took over second as Johnathan Hyde (DNF in moto one) viewed it all from fourth. When the checkered flag waved it was Tobianski taking the win (3-1). Yde’s 1-2 motos grabbed the overall ahead of Beckman (2-3) and James Torgerson’s (5-5). Good close racing from these guys kept everyone’s attention alongside the track. Lukas Cobian was unstoppable in 250A. In the first moto he held off California’s Matt Cerami and local front runner Seth Doeberlein for the win. Then in moto two, he fought his way into first early and finished there ahead of Doeberlein who got the best of Cerami. Cobian, “I had to fight hard to get that holeshot and then I just wanted to focus on my own laps and have fun. It was an awesome day. The track was great and I was able to really pick some fantastic lines and stay relaxed. I was pushed pretty hard and I’m just pumped to be here and want to thank my dad, girlfriend, Sportland2, TZR and everyone else who helps me out.”

Back just a bit, Nicholas Gaskell worked past Nicholas Czechowicz and in the final lap past Malinowski for third. Christopher Korn was in the mix, finishing sixth after a last lap tip over ended a battle with Czechowicz. Noreen beat Norred to the first corner in moto two and led the class through the opening lap. Half way through lap two Norred found a fast line and took over out front where he stayed to end the moto with a second win. Ryder Johnson after his second moto where he had to work his way up to fourth, “I had a good race. I was doing some of the bigger jumps other riders weren’t and made some passes there. It was a lot of fun and the track was good and the jumps were nice and smooth.” Bryanne Wolf grabbed the holeshot in the Women’s class first moto on her Sportland2 KX250f and never looked back. She put in solid laps on her way to the win as Haley Nowicki had to work her way into second. Brittany Cornelius put up a good fight for the first couple laps, then fell back behind Nowicki for third place. Brooke Hansen also made a couple passes, the last one on Brooke Kennebeck for fourth. Wolf once again dominated out front in moto two as she went on to sweep the day for the overall. Nowicki was quick to put her KTM into second as Hansen stepped up her game to beat Cornelius this time for third in the moto and overall. As always here at Aztalan, it was great seeing a good turnout in the class with twelve riders. The twenty-four rider Open C class had good close racing through the pack all moto. Mark Wendt put his Honda out front off the start and was under the gun right away. After a busy first lap Judea Youngthunder and Sean Badker were firmly attached to Wendt’s rear fender. The battle lasted into the last lap where the three were at one point still side by side through the wide back sand corner. In the end the order held the same and the three all celebrated their great rides after the moto. Shuffling behind the leaders continued to the end as Jake Robinson and Hayden Zurn locked in their top five positions during the last lap. The second moto had a big shake up as Wendt was leading Hayden Zurn. Coming into the tight finish line area on the first lap Wendt snubbed his motor and

Robert Lopez went 1-1 in the 125cc class.

Zurn got stuck on the inside of him. Badker went right around them and into the lead. Once out there, he went on for the win. Badker, “Those lead guys came into the tight corners on the inside and then they got tangled up. I was already going to the outside so I just went right around them and then rode my own race from there.” Badker used his 3-1 motos to take the big overall win as well. Youngthunder charged up to second by mid moto. His 2-2 finishes earned him second overall ahead of Zurn who went 5-5. Wendt lost most of the pack trying to start his bike in a panic, and could only finish tenth this time out - still good enough for fifth overall. Sunday’s sections were designed to be shorter to help finish in the shorter allowed time, but they still had some difficult obstacles. Even though the course was tough, Kyle Hach, our Intermediate winner for both days stated he wished he could stay and ride one more day. Ryan Gustafson, another Intermediate rider stated he was thinking the same thing. The Youth class is getting larger this year. On Saturday there was a three way tie for second and a two way tie for fifth. The rain made it difficult to do a ride-off Justin Johnson taking to break the tie, so there on the rocky challenges were three second place in the Novice class.
