From the Back of the Pack Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman The season is now well under way. We continued to make plans for next year’s 50th anniversary season and are certainly open to ideas for special events. Please send your our ideas to myself or your class rep. We look forward to making it a special season. This season is looking good so far. In the off road ranks the Norsemen promoted the area’s first sprint Enduro. The event brought over 300 racers to try out the new format. The feedback was extremely positive. I think we’ll see more of this in the future. The first Hare Scrambles brought out over 400 entries on one of our few good weather weekends. Participation numbers are looking good so far and memberships are right on schedule with last year’s numbers. There has been a bit of confusion over skill levels in motocross by some racers from our district and others as well. It is important to race in the correct skill level. The penalty for riding down a level is suspension of your AMA card. If you are in doubt about your level go to the AMA Race Center and it is listed there. We have has racers that raced in the C class in area qualifiers and the results have not been upheld due racing at the wrong level. If you think you’ve been incorrectly classified you can appeal it to the AMA. Another common and incorrect belief is that if you have taken a few years off from racing you can come back at a lower level. This is not correct, a racer has to appeal to go back down even after years away from racing. Most appeals are granted after going through the proper steps to avoid disqualification at an event and possible suspension. If you as a racer have raced any event at the B or A level, even if it isn’t AMA sanctioned, you are a B or A level racer. This is another very common issue that comes back to haunt racers. With the internet posting of results I get many cases a year where I’m sent results of racers that have competed in non AMA events at the B or A level then want to race C or B at points

Announcements, personal stuff, and.... events. This makes for some unhappy racers and families so please be aware of these rules. We have the National Amateur Championship Hillclimb coming to Red Wing, promoted by the Indianhead Motorcycle Club. I attended this event a couple of years ago in Bay City, WI and was astounded at the hill and the skill it takes to crest it. It is definitely a great way to spend the day spectating. Put this one on your calendar. Lastly I want to mention the retirement of Ryan Dungey. He has been the class act of professional motocross for the last decade. I and manly others are so proud that one of our Minnesota D23 ARMCA racers has gone on to achieve so many great accomplishments. I’m prouder still of the manner in which he did, with humility, dedication, hard work and class. It has been an honor to watch him from his days on a 50cc bike grow to become the man he is today. He has set a high bar for all professional athletes to follow. So thanks to Ryan for all the enjoyment you have provided and for representing us and our sport so positively. You are the man. That's it for this month, hope to see you all on the tracks and trails of Minnesota. Mike

GET

THE RIGHT G RUBBER U Buying new tires for your bike doesn’t need to be difficult if you know the answers to a few key questions: What type of riding do I typically do? Do I want the same tires that I currently have? Do I know what size tires I need? There are multiple tire size numbering systems, and it can get pretty confusing. Make sure to educate yourself on tire sizes and speed ratings before selecting your tires.

THE DENNIS KIRK TIRE FINDER at: denniskirk.ccom/tires-and-wheels / takes the guesswork out of finding the right rubber for your ride.

Another awesome Aztalan! Lake Mills, Wisconsin - May 14 Aztalan Cycle Club

W

e’re not sure how the Aztalan Cycle Club has had mother nature deliver such perfect race days for the first two motocross events of 2017, but we’ll take much more of it. Shorts, sun burns and another perfect day of racing sent us home happy. The crew added a ton of sand and mulch, all well worked into the perfectly watered and groomed track. Racing kicked off fifteen minutes early... and the day went as well as anyone could ask for... really! Racing kicked off with our youngest of riders in the 50cc 4-6 class, up on top of the hill. This class has its own starting gate, the older style forward falling version that is a bit more fitting for these riders. Using the top portion of the track allows parents to run from one section to another and never loose their youngsters. Leaving no doubt of their intent Aiden Biersteker and Zack Augustine pulled to the front off the start. They quickly got away from third place Levi Gower to wage their own battle. By the third lap they were gone, still fender to fender as they worked through lapped traffic. Biersteker held on by just two bike lengths for the win. Ryder Schweighardt dropped into fourth early, staying ahead of Mason McCanna and Devin Bares to the end. The second moto had the same riders mixing it up. As Biersteker and Augustine were running away, they went to finish the third lap and went down together

in the finish area hairpins. Augustine got out front and they were off again. It came down to the final corners as these two really went at it. Augustine took the win and with it the overall after a show that had both of their dads smiling and all excited. Schweighardt had an even better second moto to lock down third taking that overall spot away from Gower in the process. Bares finished fifth. The NonCurrent class often slips under the radar with all the different divisions being run during the day - but don’t let

that fool you into thinking these riders aren’t experienced or getting around the track quick. The talent level often runs deep - and today was more of the same with twenty riders. John Stewart is one of those guys that pops in now and then as he has been for years, making an impression every time, be it on the dirt, ice or whatever. He dropped the clutch off the start in moto one and never looked back. Keeping him honest in the early laps was another fast guy - Anthony (Tony) Tamborino. Jeremy Engelbart ran

day and the new sand and such they are in third with Matthew Blower and Lance mixing in helps. I’ve been riding here a Gilbert nipping at his heals. As they went long time, it is still so fun because we can into the fourth lap, Engelbart gave up a jump everything and race and it is all well couple sports as Blower took over third designed even for us old farts. After getting out front, Anglim wasn’t quick to let it go and fought with someone all moto. Once back to second he had Blower knocking on his rear fender for two laps. Blower did eventually find a line to take over second and lock up second overall. First moto winner Stewart had problems right away, and didn’t finish. Tamborino after the big win and overall victory, “It is like a new track out there after they groomed and watered it. That can mean slippery, or fun as you make your own berms. I got a good start in like third and eventually got into the lead. The track is so good. The sprinkler Broc Stroebel made the trip down from Greensystem helps keep it good all Bay and finished fifth in the first +30A moto.

Open A had a decent mix of the entrants having recently moved up to this class... always making it exciting. Even so, it was a couple of regulars that took control out front. Rock River Yamaha’s Jamison Duclos grabbed the holeshot by inches to lead the way in moto one. Not letting him get away, Sportland2’s Justin Wolf and Sugar Maple MX owner Jason Erdmann immediately cranked up the pace. Half way through the second lap, Wolf, knowing he needed to make a move early got around Duclos to take the lead. Wolf pulled a couple bike lengths as Duclos also opened a small gap on Erdmann and Timmy Baake, now up to fourth ahead of Mason Persha. They finished that way. In the second moto, Duclos got out front again. This time, despite a lot of effort by Wolf including several big pushes in the final laps, Duclos turned it up just enough to take the win. It was another good race to see for sure.

Open B offered a test to many C class riders moving up, including last year’s champion, Brock Noreen on his Mike’s Cycle backed Yamaha. In the first moto Tyler Vacala had the lead off the start with James Burd, Noreen, Joshua Pakenham and Aaron Sirko giving chase. Two laps later saw Noreen out front. Vacala had slid back to fourth as Ronald Schmidt climbed all the way to second ahead of Pakenham. From this point the juggling came to an end with Noreen standing up to the test, opening a small lead before the checkered flag. Cody Richter had a rough first moto and did all he could just to finish sixth. In moto two he was out to improve, and he did just that. Leading the first laps, it was only Noreen that managed to find a way around the quick KTM rider. Vacala battled all moto to finish third ahead of Eric Leach and Pakenham. Noreen after scoring his second moto win of the day, “I had good starts and worked up to the lead in both motos so this went really good. I tried to stay consistent and be smooth. Being in B class this year, it is a lot more challenging but it helps keep me riding better. The track formed a lot of nice ruts and helped make the a lot of fun. I do like the sand they added as it makes everything better. It gets more rough so you can race more and it separates the riders. It has been a really good day.” Kyle Whysol led the thirty-three rider Open C class first moto onto the track. After the opening lap he started dropping back some as others progressed towards the front. Of these riders, McHenry, IL’s Dillon Riemann had the best run, taking over the lead and carrying it to the end for the win. Devin Fell was in the mix for a while as well as Tyler Sidders, Michael Youngthunder and Jordan Martz. Racing in this class is never done until the full race ends and Martz held second at that point, just ahead of Youngthunder and Fell. Ben Streeton worked up to fifth in the last lap. Brady Tamborino had the

holeshot in the second moto but pushed the front wheel out in the corner, going down. Streeton took over before handing the lead off to Martz early in the lap. Once out front, Martz was unstoppable. Martz, “I didn’t get the holeshot but through the sand corner I was able to get the lead and hold it to the end. I went down in the first moto and still managed to get back to second. I had my lines so moving up with the ruts and all was a lot easier. I’d really like to thank my parents for making all this possible!” As Martz locked up the win and overall (2-1) Yo u n g t h u n d e r pushed his way into second by mid-moto for second overall (3-2) ahead of first moto winner Riemann who got stuck back a few spots and couldn’t advance past fifth place behind Douglas Strehlow (6- Jace Miller finished fourth in both 65cc 7-11 motos. 4).

The Schoolboy 1 (125Jr) class stayed close up front through every lap. Eddie Norred had the lead all the way, just ahead of Seth Doeberlein and DJ Gritzmacher. By the second lap, Max Early and Brandon Martyniak joined the fun. With a little over a lap to go, Earley found a line around Gritzmacher for third and they finished in order with Norred holding off Doeberlein all the way.

Oldenaround me and I knew I would have to work to beat him. As I caught up to him he stalled. He re-fired it right away but we went up the plateau together and it was a lot of fun. Getting the win always helps. The track is as good as it has ever been, and even better. They are doing a lot of work and it shows. It has always been fun, but it is another level now with the softer surface.” Aztalan always pulls a ton of vet riders, like today’s +50 class that had twenty-six entries. In the first moto Carl Hein got the jump he wanted to lead out of the first turn, just a few feet ahead of Frank Weiss. These two have been turning laps here for years and it showed as they slowly crept away from the close race behind them. As the racer order settled in a bit, Jonathan Hyde, Tim Bares and Greg Madison, WI’s William Kazynski taking on the sand corner in +40B/C. As the last lap began, Weiss was still pushing Hein as hard as Hein’s charge took most of the moto, as he could out front. Hein didn’t let Weiss once again he had to work up, this time get to him, holding his own for the win. finishing second. The battle for third came down to the Like Schoolboy 1, this 2 Stroke class final portion of the last lap when Bares had a number of spectators and riders around the track talking about how cool made his way ahead of the others. It was another absolutely fantastic day Eddie Norred returned in 2 Stroke B/C at Aztalan! If you read this before the with the same results. District 16/23 Opener Shadow Valley Drifters kick off ‘17 indoors New Richmond, Wisconsin - April 29-30 Cedar Lake Arena By Tim McBride

T

he Shadow Valley Drifters played host to the 2017 flat track season opener by featuring a dual-district (16 and 23) event at the Cedar Lake Indoor Arena located in New Richmond, Wisconsin. Nearly 200 entrants were on hand for the unique two day event. Flat track racers know weather is always a factor in how their day will play out, but it never comes into play at the indoor venue where the competitors were treated to a smooth and very raceable track. Topping multi-class winner category was Jim Kirschbaum from Bever Dam Wisconsin. Kirshbaum swept all three classes he entered both Saturday and Sunday. While piloting his high-powered KTM he topped the +30, +40 and Master +50 class on both days. It was quite an accomplishment, considering the talented competition Kirshbaum was up against.

The only trouble Kirshbaum had was trying to decide the choice of awards the Shadow Valley Drifters put on display for all of the class winners afterwards.

In the Pro Bike category, AMA Pro Single contender Parker Lange from Campbellsport, WI. piloted his Lange Brothers Racing sponsored 450cc Honda

to convincing victories in the Open Pro and Pro-Expert classes on Saturday. While he was geared for a repeat Sunday, unfortunately for Lange and the rest of the field, AMA Grand National #68 Josh Koch showed up with his Anderson Plumbing sponsored Honda CRF450. Koch used a high line in Open Pro main and raced around the outside of Nick Mataya and Lange to score his first win of the day. The Pro-Expert main was quite more dramatic, The quick starting Lange was out front again and in control for much of the race as Koch, Mataya and the Vanilla Cycle’s sponsored Cole Fealy each took turns nibbling at his rear tire. Koch saved the best for last as he slid to the outside of Lange on the last lap in turn two to score an exciting win. In the Pro Quad division, Antigo Wisconsin native Kegan Hackbarth raced his Honda to victory in both main events. On Saturday Hackbarth scored the win just ahead of heat race winner Dylon Waldvogel and Colton Zimmerman. On Sunday Hackbarth topped the preliminary heat race and the main event. Roselawn HS Double Header Roselawn, Indiana - April 29-30 By Austin Wells

R

ain rain rain. Those three words defined the weather for the weekend at the WFO Promotions District 17 Hare Scramble double-header in Roselawn, IN. Charlie Deutscher and his crew laid out two separate 5.5+ mile loops for the two different days at the Sun Aura Resort. Luckily most of the property has a sandy base with a little clay and black dirt mixed in, making it able to hold a large amount of rain. With the forecast in mind, Deutscher was able to lay out the courses to accommodate the incoming rainfall. With a steady, light rain most of Saturday, 125 total entries (bikes only) still came out to weather the storms. In the mini classes, Austin Burns took the 50cc 7-8 win aboard his KTM. In the 65cc Beginner class, Davin Shike stood atop the podium. Levi Fortune, following his older brother Buddy’s winning ways, took the 65cc 7-11 class win. Easton Morgan continued his win streak, topping the 85cc class. Ashley Hall took the Steelhorse Innovations Holeshot Award in the Women’s class and went on to take her first win of the season. In the +30C class, the top three were only separated by about 50 seconds, with Alan Courtney taking the win. In AA, Cody Barnes took the win followed by fellow Yamaha rider Cody Bollinger. Austin Wells would rebound from a dead last start to finish third. Tanner Whipple topped the Open A class, finishing an impressive third overall. Kaleb Cloyd finished second in Open A with TJ Nees not far behind in third. Buddy Fortune took the 98-250B class win by a fairly large margin over Nick Balzer and Zac Downey. Illinois’ Cody Barnes ripped the holeshot and was followed into the timber by Team SRT rider Austin Wells and Yamaha-mounted Colt Converse. It was Chris Bach who fought his way through the pack in the first section to take the early lead. After a first-turn crash with Cody Bollinger, Ricky Russell also pushed through the pack quickly to catch up to Bach and Barnes. After dicing with Russell for the first three laps, Bach put the hammer down and gapped him just enough to have some breathing room and take the win aboard his KTM with Barnes in third. Bach, “I’m pretty happy with my last minute choice to come race today. This property is only about 35 minutes away from the house and with all the rain I knew this would be the only place rideable. I had a really fun race with Ricky [Russell] the whole day. We went back and forth a few times. There wasn’t much passing with all the single track so you had to be strategic with your moves. Berm Benders Motocross

Jake Loberg knows all the fastest lines at his "home track".

Mora, Minnesota - April 23 By Angela John Photos by Kaelyn Hegman

A

n unseasonably warm April day welcomed D23 motocross racers back to Berm Benders Raceway for the first weekend of the 2017 Civil Series season. This year’s series has an added bonus, in addition to awards, prizes, a free banquet and dirt bike donated by Caswell Cycle, they are giving away a trip for two to the Supercross finals in Las Vegas. Friday night and Saturday morning race rig after race rig filed through the gate. Excitedly they settled in, anxious to get reacquainted with the friends and competitors they had missed over the long winter hibernation. Blue skies beckoned people to rise early Saturday morning to attend the free pre-practice motocross camp presented by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Fan favorite and Berm Benders home track hero, Jake Loberg gave a mx tutorial to riders young and old alike. The day continued to warm as the practice took to the

the holeshot but was quickly passed by Webber and Lemke. Still in the first lap Lemke passed Webber as Petrik was charging hard in third. The rest of the race the top three stayed consistent as Lemke took the win. One of the spectator’s favorite races, +55 is laden with expertise and speed. With centuries of combined racing knowledge there’s always something to be learned from their technique or attitude. With even more ferocity than 250C, the old fast guys rushed towards the first corner with #33 Mark Deal getting the holeshot with Jack Parenteau trying his hardest to seize that prime piece of property and Bruce Schaapveld tightly in third. With good momentum and an opportune line Schaapveld passed Parenteau over the table top in the first lap and then continued his charge for the rest of the race, pressuring Deal around every corner. The first moto finished with Deal, Schaapveld, Parenteau holding their own. With great excitement and anticipation the men lined up again for their second moto. Deal, proved he is kind of a “Big Deal”, taking the holeshot again

track, testing skills and maybe to shake loose the cobwebs collected over winter. Saturday’s warmth was traded Sunday for a typical cold April day. Shorts exchanged for parkas, blankets and stocking caps. Regardless of temperature the racers were zealous and the gates were packed, especially in the ever popular 250C race. With eighteen riders fighting for the holeshot Kole Lemke squeezed his way through the masses taking first with Wyatt Kragt and Mitch Petrik hot on his tail. Chase Webber was moving up quickly through the pack, charging hard and making passes to fourth and looking determined to move up even further. Webber passed Petrik in the second lap for third while Kragt had difficulties and fell back a position. With Lemke stretching out his lead the battle was heated for second place with Petrik getting passed by Webber and then passing him back with a final exchange leading to Webber in second and Petrik third. With every corner Schaapveld and Parenteau battled but the race finished with Deal in first ahead of Parenteau and his hard earned second place. Old racers, young racers, family, friends and teammates all want to thank Berm Benders Raceway for an amazing start to the season. D23 Hare Scramble Opener Millville event draws over 400 entries Millville, Minnesota - May 14 By Keith McKenna

T

he racing for the District 23 Hare Scrambles opener was hot, just like the weather. Over 400 entries from all over the upper midwest showed up for the opening round held on the hallowed grounds that is Spring Creek Motocross Park in southern Minnesota. With the high humidity and mid 80’s, after a long cold drawn-out spring, attrition was sure to play a part in the gathering of early season points for the championship. It is less common these days to see full gates at the MX races, but this day’s turnout assured that packs of 40-50 riders would be caught charging into the first turn all at the same time, on several occasions. As is customary, the Micro/ Macro riders took their turn on the mini track with a short woods section cut in, while the

Premier class got to throw down on a large portion of the MX National track with around seven miles of very challenging woods, river bottoms and don’t ever forget, the climbing and descending of the bluffs that surround the park. Temps and the humidity were rising to keep pace with the excitement that the C class and the Women were generating in their psyche over the long cold frozen off season. There were so many new racers that the future of MN off-road looks to be assured. In the Micro class the victor was #643 Carter Niedzielski. Macro class winner was #246 Jacob Peters. In the Premier class, for riders on 85cc 2 strokes and 150 4 strokes, a number of the class’s fast guys have moved up to bigger bikes and older classes, so that paves the way for new racers and new visitors to victory circle. The three front runners were so evenly matched that you could almost have thrown a blanket over

Turnout for the D23 season opener was really high. Here’s a portion of the field of C racers. The AA, A and B contingent was much larger. There was also all the morning classes.

them at any point during the race. Caleb Sledd on his #525 Yamaha held point coming off the line. The only rider to head Caleb was that of eventual winner Troy Horbaty. Horbaty was setting a torrid pace in a valiant effort to put distance on his rivals, but Sledd and Alexander Burdick were stuck to his tail! At one point, Sledd toppled off of his Yamaha. Instead of sitting on the trail wailing, he focused his attention to the task at hand and not get passed by the rider behind. With disaster averted, he put his head down and set about making up the few seconds lost. In the end the finish the order was Horbaty, Sledd and Burdick. In the 200C race, third place finisher, KTM mounted #225 Miranda Tweeton decided to step out of her comfort zone, that being the Girls division. To go from the Girls to 200C can be viewed as a pretty big step. It was a step that didn’t seem to intimidate Tweeton in the least. At the drop of the green flag, Tweeton

dropped the hammer with authority on her male counterparts. When the pack came through turn one, the field was fighting and clawing to catch Tweeton. Tweet would drop only two spots on the first lap and then no further. Very respectable indeed. Every time a racer steps up to a faster class, the road (trail) to the podium can be long and hard fought. Well, make way boys cuz sister is coming through! Congrats to Miranda. There were three racers with their eye on the prize in Open B. Coy Jackson, Nick Oeltjen and Josh Brixen, who engaged in the three way battle. They raced hard, clean and race hard some more, to finish in that order. The Open A class is always fun to watch because you see racers racing everything from 125 2-strokes to 450 4strokes and even occasionally a 500cc 2-

Cobra mounted Jacob Peters led flag to flag to win the Macro class’s season opener.

stroke “Widow Maker”. Clint Huff, Austin Ryan and Paul Reschke engaged in a battle that almost split the terra firma all the way down to Hades! Huff, the eventual winner of the four lap roust-a-bout was pulling second place at the completion of the first ten mile loop. By the time he came through the scoring barrels a second time, he had taken over the lead from Austin Ryan. KTM mounted Paul Reschke started out in sixth place at the end of the first loop, but by lap three he had advanced to third, setting the order of finish. So, last race of the day. The AA racers rocketed off the line like a squadron of F18’s on steroids. Multi time D23

champ Nate Ferderer got an uncharacteristically bad start on his GasGas. Fourth at the end of lap one, first by the end of lap two and then checking out for the win. On laps two and three, Ferderer would circulate in the low 27 minutes, while everyone else was near the 29 even pace. On lap five Ferderer slowed his pace due to the afternoon heat and humidity. That allowed second place Austin Pogreba to get his Kawasaki to within 40 seconds of the Champ, but that was it.

P

ine Ridge Raceway was up and at back at it with an early May race. That can be a gamble in the north woods of Wisconsin, a gamble that the crew at Pine Ridge took and it paid off with great spring weather and turn out. It takes a lot of effort to get a track this size up and going early in the year, but the hard working team did just that. From the ladies in the office and scoring to the band of brothers and their sons working on the track, they had the facility in top notch shape for the opener. Some motivation this spring could be from some of the added events they will do this year which include UTV racing. 2 stroke B/C is becoming one of the most popular classes at the track these days. It allows up and comers an extra class to ride and some of the seasoned B riders another class to battle in and without an age range it always turns into one of the biggest classes of the day. With twenty plus riders in the mix today it was sure to be exciting. While a lot of the front runners were on 250s, Colin Hass got his YZ125 out front early in moto one with Kole Olson and Nick Randrup in tow. Another guy you normally find

Young gun Haiden Waelchli was running third by the end of the moto and Jack Kleiman on his KTM in fourth followed closely by Derek Busse who borrowed a two stroke to have some fun with the boys. That’s how they finished in moto. With such a mix up behind Hass and Randrup the overall favored some of the better rides in moto two. Kleiman made his 63 work for third, Noreen quietly picked up fourth with 4-6 and rounding out the top five was Busse with a 7-5. irst, a big thank you to Bob Kau for all the work finding enough high ground for a six mile course. The water table is very high this year. Also, to the fellow landowners for a great venue. “Veteran” racer Walker Garetson led the 50cc class from wire to wire. It was a nine bike class that saw Aiden Schmidt and Cole Montgomery finish just behind Garetson in second and third. In the 65cc class Brady Brixen set the pace while Dane Cihlar and Boede Wallner dueled for five laps. Cihlar moved up to second and held on to that position to the finish. Brixen and Cihlar’s pace at the end gave them an extra lap, finishing eleven total. The 85cc class found Carson Hosking, Travis Bloyer and Rex Valek in a 1-2-3 combo for the entire race. Hosking overtook Bloyer for second place on lap ten

of the thirteen lap race. Son, Steven Kaczmarowski (1st) and father, Rick Kaczmarowski (3rd) blanketed James Williams in the Vintage class as they ran in that order from the opening lap. The largest class of the day was made up by the the C riders with thirty-four entries. Colten Thompson, Clay Wahlstedt and Dan Wachtel were the top three finishers after an hour of really good, close racing. Mitchell Buth worked up from a fourth place start to overtake Dillon Sather and win the eighteen rider B class. The new +30B class had eleven riders running the same six and seven laps that the other B riders rode. Adam Cihlar won the class after riding in second ahead until the fifth lap. Brian Saari completed the first lap in fourth, but also worked up quickly, leading the second lap and then up to lap five when Cihlar moved past. Jacob Mccutchin led the opening lap before sliding back to fourth behind Mike Post.

There were a lot of familiar faces in the +40 class. No big surprises as Travis Held and Joe Vadeboncouer went 1-2 much of the race. District 16 Enduro Referee, Curt Shomberg finished third after holding down second through lap one. District 16 President Todd Ellingson finished fourth on his Honda. The +50 class was dominated by prematurely grey riders. Andrew Jensen, Carl Jahns and Dean Hagemann finished first through third as Brad Kortbein wrapped up fourth, having ran through the first lap in sixth. Chuck Garetson showed why the Garetson sons did so well in the small bike classes. By lap two Chuck was on his way to the A class victory over eighteen others. The top three finishers made eight laps on the sandy Adams County course. Not surprisingly, JD Friebel topped the AA class with a wire to wire first place ride. Matt McDonald and Eric Mischler rounded out the top three. Hard luck CYCLE USA, June 2017

D23 Youth Enduro Opener

Cambridge, Minnesota - May 6 By Paul Otto

T

he 2017 Off-Road season kicked off with the Youth, a new race format and a lot of enthusiasm. In past years the Youth Enduros were basically a Hare Scrambles style racing format but, for this year they were introduced to a Sprint Enduro style of racing. For the Micro/ Macros each rider had to ride the course set up by trail boss

Cavan Heuer

Jason Goth and crew eight times to finish the race. Riders would start individually thirty seconds apart and would be timed from start to finish. At the end of each lap riders would get a little break while waiting in line to complete the same section eight times. Once riders completed the required number of laps their accumulative lap times were then calculated and the rider with the lowest time was the overall winner.

Charlie Siebenaler

As with the Micro/Macros, the Peewee, Girls and Premiers also learned the new format with a little twist. Each rider had to complete two separate sections. Riders got to race on two different courses for a combined four laps. Once again the combined times for each lap were added up for the eventual winner. With the new format if was fun watching the parents with the kids explaining how to stage at the start, then running out to the course cheering them on, jetting over to the finish to help them get back to the start. Water, gas, pep talk, clean goggles and do it all over again. After the race I think there were more exhausted parents than riders. All in all with minor learning curves the Norsemen MC did a great job with the first Youth Sprint Enduro. Congrats to all the participants and a big thanks to all that volunteered to make this event possible. Rapid Angels MC beats Mother Nature’s Cold This once a year race is always a must attend in District 16 Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin - April 30 By Doug Forstner, photos by Kaila Forstner

W

hen you grow up in Wisconsin there’s a pretty good chance you’ve ridden a snowmobile in the winter. As spring approaches, excitement is in the air for warm weather and the motorcycle season. Sometimes winter can drag on... you know. Going into the District 16 motocross point’s opener, weather for race day was scheduled to be very cold and rainy. For the most part, the rain held off but the cold

was evident. I knew this would scare off some riders but when a track like Dyracuse can only be raced on once a year, you can’t miss it. When I woke up Sunday morning and stepped outside the camper to check the conditions, I could see my breath from the near freezing temps. I had two options; Crawl back into bed and call it a day or pretend it was still snowmobile season. I chose option two and found some long johns and a couple layers to put on under my race gear and my knit hat. We discussed if we even had time to put snowmobile grip heaters on our handle-

bars before practice. As it played out, we only had the charcoal activated hand warmers so we had to suck it up for the day. The Town of Rome at the end of 2016 stuck a bunch of money into the 334 acre facility including the trails, the supercross track, the peewee track and of course the main motocross track. The motocross track saw some major changes compared to last year. The old sweeper by the track entrance is gone and now there is a sharp 90 degree turn that shoots you uphill into the new section that offers up a lot of action because of how knarly it gets. This section gets super rough and has a bunch

of switchbacks which allow for passing opportunities. This leads into the first uphill and to help with erosion, the track work put some clay into this area and stepped it to help with dirt that easily comes down the hill in rough weather. Practice started exactly at 7am and unlike most tracks were people wait to go out for practice many riders were chomping at the bit to be first out on the freshly groomed sandy moist highway. This track changes like no other throughout the day... from a highway, to a whooped out test for your sand abilities and conditioning. Racing here is unique, and just something you have to do. Open A was the fastest class of the day and in moto one it was Nate Laporte on his Yamaha 450 leading the way after getting the holeshot. He was closely followed by Justin Wolf, Jake Van Ess, and Dylan Narel. Laporte opened up a small gap on Wolf as Van Ess and Narel were battling over third. With the lower turnout of riders the track didn’t get as rough as it normally does and these Open A boys were setting a blistering pace. Late in the moto, Van Ess went down in a corner and Narel got by. The finishing order was Laporte, Wolf, Narel, Van Ess, and Tim Baake. Moto two was much of the same as Laporte quickly put his bike in the front and set sail. Wolf again rode really well in the number two slot. Narel and Van Ess again were exchanging paint and both wanted that number three slot. In the end, Van Ess would get by Narel and his 4-3 gave him the bronze medal behind Wolf and Laporte. The Two Stroke B/C class allows any of age B/C class rider with a two stroke motorcycle 125cc and larger to come out and bang bars. The numbers on this class continue to improve as more people learn of it. Of course, the resurgence of the two strokes also is improving the numbers. As moto one lined up, my money was on the couple of 36

250cc two strokes in the class compared to the rest of the smaller 125cc bikes to get the holeshot on the long sandy start straight. Local rider Nick Randrup is who I put my money on to grab the start and win, however, another local rider had different plans. Cody Steuck on his Yamaha had the track dialed and looked good up front. Ry Baumann from Wausau was close behind for a lap before loosing some ground to the leaders, but

he couldn’t slack off as Nick Jacobson, Joe Haasl, Sam Forstner, Luke Vanlyssel, Devin Blume and Jake Hunger were in a big battle right behind him. At the checkers it was Steuck with the win over Randrup, followed by Baumann, Jacobson and Vanlyssel. Haasl and Forstner traded positions I think four times on the last lap alone and it was hard to keep tabs on who was in what position with so many good battles taking place.

Cody Steuck had a good day winning both 250B and Two Stroke B/C

Moto two again saw Randrup and Steuck out front early and gapping the field. This time around Jacobson put his 250 bike up front towards the leaders off the start, running a strong third with Forstner and Haasl right behind him. Haasl on his CR125 had a good start this time around with Baumann right there as well. Vanlyssel was working his way forward from a bad start. Lap two saw Steuck get around Randrup and take over the number one spot. A couple riders went down on different parts of the track as all were running pretty hard to stay with the leaders. With a lap to go, Vanlyssel made a couple nice passes and worked up to the number Luke Vanlyssel and Sam four spot with Haasl all Forstner battle in Schoolboy. over him and to the Dowd rounding out the top five. checkers for the number four spot. As the motos ran down and all was said and done, it was only 3pm and I couldn’t help but reflect on what a good day it was with so many great battles out on the track. The good news is that I’ve already started working on heated motorcycle grips for next year and let’s hope I’m wrong and it will be 70 degrees out for the opener! If you’re looking to do some cool practice riding this season, make sure to check this place out. A little searching of the club’s website will get you all the hours and such - and with the tracks and trails, you’ll have as much fantastic riding space as you could ever ask for. Megacross has Huge Opener Over 360 entries sets high expectations for the season

egacross finally got off and running on May 13th, with earlier attempts at kicking the season off being shot down by Mother Nature. The weather finally turned out great this weekend with enough moisture from earlier in the week it was looking very good out there. The track shaped up really great throughout the night with some nice ruts and multiple lines to keep things interesting all night. Not to mention the turnout tonight was very packed with a majority of classes running full gates and C class having so many riders they split into two divisions. Megacross is definitely looking like the place to be for some great battles this summer. 65Jr was on the line early in the evening getting the battles started with eleven riders hungry for a good finish. Pete Perenti got out front quick to take the holeshot. Preston Zollers and Braden Wereski were close behind as they came around the second corner to head into the whoops. Quickly a bat- Young Owen Davis in 50Jr. 38

this point Parenti and Zollers had begun to pull away a bit with Zollers sticking to Parenti putting the pressure on. The race came to a close with Parenti taking the win, Zollers in second and Bierbom third. The action was on in +30A tonight. They came into the first corner with Chad Johnson in the lead followed by Burton Lavens and Brian White. In the middle of the pack came Kevin Markwardt and Tom Hofmaster going bar to bar. Markwardt took off to the front passing White to take third. Heading over the finish line Markwardt was still charging and he took over second, dropping Lavens to third to contend with a still advancing Hofmaster. Heading into turn before the triple Markwardt was able to get enough speed through the whoops to take over the lead after a tough fight with Johnson. The moto ended with Markwardt taking the win, Johnson in second and Lavens holding onto third. The 30B class had an outstanding twenty-three rider class hit the track. When it was done, there was a sea of red out front with Jacob Fabrizius topping Kyle Schneider, Scott Kooistra and Brent Johnson - all riding Hondas. Fifth place Brandon Johnson broke the trend on his Kawasaki, having just beat out another red rider, Cory Lingle. 125cc had some great battles to heat up the night. Mason Schuhler came out hard to take the holeshot with a tight squeeze on the inside as Nolan Dickinson and Garrett Ward where charging hard to the next turn. Dickinson quickly went to work looking for the lead, getting close several time as they headed towards the table tops. Coming in quick on his Husqvarna he

squeezed around for the lead down the start straight. The battle behind Dickinson was heating up with Schuhler and Ward going back and forth, fighting for that second spot in the thirteen rider class. In the end it came to Dickinson taking the win as second went to Schuhler. Forty-eight 250C class riders filled out the evening’s biggest group. Split into two divisions, it gave the large class a rare chance to let two riders claim victory for the night. In 250C-1 Tyler Floyd put in a great ride to beat out Eli Otterbach and Matt St John. Then in the second division it was Alex Parks topping his gate drop to beat Jacob McCarrens and Gregory Breckenridge to the checkered flag. 450C was split into two divisions also, with Tyler Floyd grabbing another win for the night. Jacob McCarrens returned from the 250 class to get a win this time, beating out Colton Saylor and Josh Cox in the eighteen rider division. It was another great night of Megacross racing with the track in perfect condition

and the program ran in the usual first class manner. With round one finally in the books things will keep progressing right along into the summer. Be sure to check out Megacross when you can make it out for some racing under the lights, there’s something for everyone. Dist. 17 Split Trials Weekend Elmwood/ Peoria, Illinois - May 6-7 By Kevin Huber, Photos by Shari Huber

T

he weekend of May 6th and 7th found the District 17 Trials riders at two different venues. Saturday the annual Elmwood event was held at Tom Bledsoe’s property. Then on Sunday everyone traveled the 15 miles to the Peoria Motorcycle Club (PMC) grounds for another fun event. The setup at Elmwood had its usual log and creek sections. Trialsmaster Tom Bledsoe did an excellent job of setting up eight challenging sections for all riders. The soil had dried from the rains earlier in the week, but you still had some mud to contend with in the creeks. As the day went on, more water was splashed up the banks which made them slippery. The normal stadium log section was used and more logs had been added. Riders had to cross them many times, sometimes with little room to Expert class double winner Mike Cross. line up for the next one. This year there was a new section built on an area where dirt had been piled up that formed some mini motocross style woop-dedos. The difference for trials was that you had to be slow and deliberate going over them to allow for the sharp turns and the additional logs and a tractor tire that need to be crossed. Many riders that live further away made the trip to the Peoria Motorcycle Club to camp on Saturday night so they could be ready to ride Sunday morning. Another great event was put on by the club. Trialsmaster Jim Schaidle was able to set up ten challenging sections for all the riders. He also found a new rocky em- Advanced class rider Kyle Kremer at one of the water crossings 40

bankment when clearing out a briar patch that was added to a section. Just like Elmwood, the rain from earlier in the week had mostly dried. They also have several creek crossings, so the water was still a factor in some sections. One trademark of PMC is the many side hills where busted concrete was dumped to help stop erosion. This makes some challenging hill climbs for the riders. You had to pick your path and keep moving to not get hung up between the chunks of concrete. Both days included some young kids riding special Pre-youth sections on electric trials bikes. The very young riders show the age contrast for this sport. Especially with Roy Clugg still riding, having just turned 80 years young. Atwater Kicks Off 2017 Atwater, Wisconsin May 6 By Bambi Yogerst

W

e were all gracious that the weather cooperated with the first race of the season at Atwater, home of the Beaver Cycle Club. Partly cloudy, brisk wind, chilly temperatures, but no rain! There were lots of handshakes, hugs and “glad to see ya’s” as this was the first time since last season that a lot of these folks have seen each other. With twenty-two classes to choose from, more than one hundred and fifty entrants filled out the evening’s event. A nice size crowd of spectators also congregated on the hillside to enjoy some flat track racing. One of the big winners of the night was Jim Kirschbaum out of Fox Lake, WI. Riding his # 99 KTM, Kirschbaum got the holeshot in the Super Senior main with Gary Ruatti, Scott Walter and Dan Peterson charging right behind. In the third lap Peterson passed Walters and ran right up on Ruatti. Running side by side for a half

lap, Peterson made the pass into second. His eyes were set on Kirschbaum, but laps ran out. Kirschbaum also topped the Senior class main after Jason Dix got the holeshot. Kirschbaum made it quick, taking over the lead by turn two. Dan Peterson again stuck with him after moving around Dix for second. Kirschbaum went on to dominate the +30 main event as well, this time ahead of Dan Vrana and Matt Will. Michael Van Langen (Cedarburg, WI) rode his #67h Honda to victory in both of his class mains. After battling with Jacob Walters and Alec Muth for the win in Open Amateur, Van Langen got the

holeshot in the 251-505cc class, with Brady Lange (Hon) and Alec Muth (Hon) side by side right behind him. Muth eventually edged away from Lange to lock down second. Lange then had to contend with #43 Jacob Walter on his Honda. Walter passed Lange for third then continued his roll ahead by catching and passing Muth. Van Langen held his lead to win the race. Jumping the start of the 125-250cc class main, Brady Lange and Cole Andresen were moved to the back row of the starting grid. Brooke Chromy on her Honda led the group into the first turn on the restart. Lap two saw Miss Chromy and Emmett Sund run side by side into turn two. A slight altercation had a couple of riders go down between turns one and two brings the race to a another restart. With the green light Brady Lange shot from the back row to the front of the pack, taking an immediate lead. Ethan Rosine of Campbellsport on his Honda stayed with Lange. Continuing to challenge, side by side at times, right up to the

Season opener riders meeting.

last lap as Lange held on hard to take the checkered flag. Despite the chilly wind, everyone was still smiling at the end of the night! It was really good to be back at the track. Norsemen MC host first Sprint Enduro in MN Cambridge, Minnesota - May 7 By Paul Otto

N

ew seasons often come with new gear, new bikes or graphics and higher expectations, but how often do new race formats come about. Well for the 2017 season the District 23 Off-Road riders, compliments of the Norsemen MC willing to take the risk of the unknown, were part of history in the making. The all new craze of Sprint Enduros finally made its way to Minnesota. With land availability issues Sprint Enduros have become something new to the Off-Road circuits across the globe. Sprint Enduros compact the base of different venues from Motocross, Hare

Scrambles and Enduros all into one, using less land than your typical Enduro. Trail boss Jason Goth created three unique loops. Loop one consisted of your typical Enduro tight woods style of course, while loop two was more of a Hare Scramble course with some more open woods and grass track and loop three was a Motocross style section. All riders had to complete each loop a designated number of times depending on their skill level and complete this in a designated amount of time. Each loop was timed from start to finish and riders could select what loop they wanted to do first or last. It seemed strategy was in full affect as most riders thought they would do the Enduro section first before it got all beat up. Unfortunately this created a long line and forced the Norsemen to extend the allotted overall time or there would have been a big chunk of riders unable to finish all the sections in time. Riders had to keep track of how many laps they did per Even D23’s MX advisor Mark Vanderwerf came to check out the new format

Riders staging for section three.

loop and some pretty creative thought went into keeping track. I saw duck tape strips for each lap needed and they would peel one off after each lap, pit crew’s with pen and paper and some just hoping they didn’t crash, hit their head and forget how many laps they did. Another big change was scoring. Dan and Rebecca Banks took on the task of putting together six computers to time the riders for each section from start to finish. Uploading and downloading databases to all the computers and praying they all work can be very stressful as all the sections are calculated together with lap times giving the lowest time the win. Mess this up and you’ll have a lot of eyes on you. Banks stating it was a lot of skill that made it a success, still most speculated it was luck. Either way things went pretty smooth on the day. With the use of the computers doing all the scoring and riders doing different sections at different times it was next to impossible to know how you were doing compared to your competitors until the results were posted which also creates a heightened sense of urgency to put down fast laps every lap with no mistakes.

C class riders where the first to tackle the new format. New to everyone it took two young up and coming riders on small bore two strokes to show everyone how it’s done. Kyle Magnuson and Chandler Lokken in the 200C class threw down some fast combined laps to place 1st and 2nd in both class and overall. Seven seconds separated the two riders when the total times were calculated. Checking out the lap and section times really shows who had issues on certain laps and what sections riders excel or struggle. This can also give a rider some insight on what discipline they need to work on to better there times. Vet C saw another battle with Jacob Mosbek and Robert Pretts alternating better lap times. While Pretts seemed to be more confident in the woods. Mosbek rode consistent and didn’t loose too much time in the woods. He put a little distance in time on the motocross course. I said little, as it was literally three seconds that separated the two riders in the end. Hindsight brings out the what if’s when you lose by seconds.

this much talent riding this close together William Bohn pulled off third place the Senior A class should be an exciting and had some very consistence laps, but class to watch. just didn’t have the pace of the top two. Open B looks to be the most competiSteve Reschke caught my eye scrolling tive class as six of the top ten overall down the overall list. Riding in the Masscores came out of this class. Spoiling ters class at a youthful age of seventy, the fun was Spencer Cowing in Vet B as Steve pulled off the win while placing he took the overall spot away from fourteenth out of sixty some riders in the Devon Forsberg by 0.334 seconds. C class is pretty impressive. A nice ride Mason Kuechenmeister also in the Open by fellow Master riders Terry Wagoner and Douglas Gorton placing 2nd and 3rd. Due to a cancellation of the GNCC AA rider Nate Ferderer switched gears and showed up on a Yamaha YZ125. Not the weapon of choice one would think a AA rider would choose, but Ferderer proved to have the speed regardless. Commenting that he hasn’t had that much fun on a bike and that everyone should have a 125 in their life. Logan Kittock took home second and a out of nowhere came the reigning 2016 Enduro champion’s younger brother Austin Pogreba. When it rains it pours as Chad Tupper can’t seem to catch a break. The Senior A rider has come up seconds short from taking a win and this day was no different. Tupper flat out beat the newest member of the old guys Garrett Hansen and regular Jeremy Schmidt in the woods sections, but realized motocross is not his forte. Schmidt, an old school moto guy shined on the motocross portion, Hansen proved that being good and consistent in all venues will earn you the win. Twenty seconds separated the top four with Garrett Hansen, Jeremy Schmidt, Chad Tupper and Rob Newport. With Dan Foresland in the +50B class 46

B class took home the third spot on the podium in the overall B class. In all the first Sprint Enduro in Minnesota was a success. A tweak here and there to make things run smoother will only enhance the riders’ experience. We look forward to what the future will bring now that the first Sprint Enduro has been unveiled. Sunset Ridge Qualifier Riders, families and track crew make the most of a very wet weekend Walnut, Illinois - April 29 & 30th By Josh Rud, Shift One Photography

ight at the very end of April Sunset Ridge MX opened the gates for Loretta Lynn hopefuls to get underway with the process of qualifying for the National this summer. However Mother Nature didn’t receive the memo about all these racers and their families looking forward to a great weekend here in Walnut. Saturday started overcast and cold in the low forties, with the track shaping up really nice. The crew out at Sunset Ridge had made some pretty significant changes to the track layout. It started with cutting out the back table tops, then adding a larger section up the hill by the start, and a large jump for those checkered flag moments. As the day progressed rain started light and then by the afternoon it was much worse. To the point where only one moto was ran. Sunday was a even worse with the

weather not letting up, cold and raining once again. To salvage a race able surface the crew made a few quick and impressive changes - adjusting the track to avoid all the large jumps. With standing water everywhere there was an extremely short practice and another moto format to

finish. Despite all the rain and treacherous conditions there was really good racing out there through-out the weekend. There were also a lot of local riders getting through the top eight and moving on to the regionals.

Sunset Ridge was in great shape Saturday morning before Mother Nature stepped in. Here Reese Miller enjoys it during the early 250A class moto.

With stand out riding the entire weekend, Jayce Pennington out of Walnut Hill Illinois swept the A class Saturday and took the win in Open Pro Sport Sunday, riding hard in the muddy conditions. Jonah Geistler (IL) was hauling in the muddy conditions as well through-out the weekend, I seen him on multiple occasions up front with a clean number plate. He took home first is 450B limited, 250B and 450B along with a second place is 250B limited for a rock weekend. It was great to watch all the riders brave the rain and mud to come out and do the sport they love. Also the requirements to keep moving quick through such muddy conditions is something a lot of riders don’t get much practice doing now days - it has become a rather forgotten skill set. Big point to remember, if you really want to advance in this sport, you need to ride in the mud and make the most of it when necessary. The crew out at Sunset Ridge did a great job keeping this event moving despite it being more of a weekend for a Jet Rochester, Illinois’ Parker Smith in Open Pro Sport.

Ski race. Many promoters and track teams would have suffered terribly in these circumstances - the Sunset crew made it happen despite mother nature doing all she could to ruin it. Hats off to this team for sure! This was certainly one of those races you don’t get to see very often and it was certainly a great time, all things considered. Ryan Dominates Fox Valley Gran Prix - Hare Scramble weekend a hit, again! Wedron, Illinois - May 6-7th Bhotos by Nick Smith

A

fter much of this spring has been mired in muck, this first weekend in May turned out excellent at Wedron, IL’s Fox Valley Off-Road Park. The second Gran Prix of the season was set for the Saturday morning, but after a pretty good dose of rain around 4am, it was determined that holding off a while to start would be a good plan to let the course soak up some needed sun. It made the day a little longer, but in the end the course became berm infested and tacky, actually needing a little watering by the afternoon. The 65cc class was full of kids that rode beginner last year. The Doer boys, Zach Jensen, Amos Vincent are some of the local talent that have made the move to the big course. New to the fold Grayson Plowman, Tyler Lents with Riley Roberts with technical issues in the first moto coming back strong in the second. This writer still can't tell which Doer kid is which, only that one flails his legs around like he is a karate expert

might just start calling "Revin" Zach screamed his little Suzuki 65 all day. You know the sound. Not one note, but three or four different variables of pitch as he rocketed across the "gp" field. All I could say to myself was shift, Zach Shift! It's going to be fun watching these young guns come up through the ranks. They’ve all come a long ways since seeing them in the 50cc classes. In a few short years they will be knocking off the A class men. Thirteen was a solid number. The A class was pretty stacked for a Saturday and Countryside's KTM rider Blake Ryan had a great day taking the win. Earlier in the Open class most of the A class guys banged around with close racing. Anytime Mason Schuhler is on a bike he will be in the hunt for the lead, even on the ole tired Suzuki 125 he practices. Saving his "good" bike for Sunday's HS event, Mason grabbed second overall behind Ryan. Alec Perry is back! Yes after a broken leg earlier somewhere out west, he has healed up and is getting back into

his groove and finished fifth in Open and second in A. Logan Housenga and his brother Braden made the trip over to re-experience gp racing. Ryan decided to show the field today that he had been riding most of the winter. Standing a lot more then he had in the past, smooth would be the word to use. Ruts, muddy spots, didn't matter as he won both the Open and A classes. Noteable mention, Triple 7 Motorsports rider Logan Skaggs decided to try his hand at a "off-road" race, finishing fifth in the A class. He struggled early, then came on strong towards the end of the day. Over hearing a comment he made while picking up his purse Quad A riders wait on Sunday’s hare scramble start. money, "man that is harder There was a great turnout for all the 4 wheel classes. then I thought"... This worked well for some while others had the cramp monster set in. New classes this season have split the Vet classes, C classes and made for an even better racing environment. There wa so much action and there’s never enough space for it all in this article. A few riders had to

leave early so their Prom dates wouldn't be too mad. Only to say "no" to the prom picnic on Sunday as they returned to the Hare Scrambles event... funny how that works. Racing interfering with social events. We won't rat them out but they know who they are. Nice job!

ay two of racing kicked off the first Hare Scramble held here in the 2017 season. Following the Gran Prix yesterday, this offered racers a fantastic two day destination for some really fun racing. Kicking it all off, 50cc overall winner Jack Allgeyer had his hands full on this Sunday morning with Jake Haston. The two dominated the field and raced to the wire with Allgeyer taking the 50Sr win by a scant fourteen seconds. Third place Brady Dillbeck seemed to be riding all alone with the front runners getting away and the rest of the top five back a ways. Cooper Duff took his Husky to fourth. Jaxon Schiller, a motocross kid by trade tried his first HS event ever. Schiller did well to finish fifth. Out of the eleven 50cc riders the top junior rider was Travis Lentz. The kids did great and managed to handle the mile long course with out any real issues. CYCLE USA, June 2017

Riders from three classes were on the overall podium of the morning big course youth class. Supermini mounted Jayson Crawford showed that his riding all winter and aggressive skills wouldn’t be beat. Luke Plowman came in a distant second riding the 85cc machine and was one of the three riders to do six laps. Allison Roland (Allie) riding her big bike Ktm in the Women’s class was third overall. Chad Phelps gets best hard charger award for this morning’s race as he rode an entire first lap coming through the scoring "arch" in 25th position, before he fought his way to fourth overall. Women's class second place finisher Krysten Merchantz took fifth overall, riding her best off road race to date. Morning big bikes were next, and normally you won’t see a young gun pass the whole field and make an easy day out it. Not today. Jayson Crawford who just won the youth class pushed his way up through the pack to third overall. BUT the rest of the top 5 was +50A class riders. Most notably Tim Farrell who just

turned fifty and decided to show the old folks in the class the way around. Jarred Hall riding his newly built Halls Cycles 1980's Husqvarna caught and passed them all but his race is shorten by 30 min so this takes him out of the "overall" honors. Greg Gourley, Greg Birkland, and Rick Marht all returned to the HS scene this year after some time off so it was good to see the "old" guys banging around the course. Kevin Finefield was in the hunt running fourth most of the race, taking a third in class. Afternoon racing kicked off with the AA and A classes, with some mixed in B class riders. Typically this race is the hardest of the day. Course adjustments and layout is changed to challenge the more experienced riders and the racing runs longer. Blake Ryan was the man to beat, giving the others out there a tutorial on standing up and riding smooth for the hour 45 minute race. Ryan was the only rider to put in twelve laps as second overall went to Jarred Hall, coming from the second line to get there. Mason Schuhler

struggled with lack of riding time (this year) and held on to third. Home grown Garrett Ward and Josh Stevenson were rounding out the top five, off the pace a ways but running strong in their class. Alex Parks was the top B rider of the day taking his Borelli Cycles Yamaha to a sixth overall. ATV, commonly known as the quad classes were well populated today. Over twenty atv's with ten plus being A class came to bang around and find the fast way through the trees! Doug Yunker took the win over Bret Daehler as Matt Iburg joined them on the podium. Chris Breitwieser who normally doesn't see this kind of competition managed a well earned fourth. Seven riders out of the overall managed nine laps on the extended course. Sean Stratton was the winning +30 rider as top honors for the B class went to Micky Martin. Fox Valley Off Road runs a smaller but organized series at the riding park with five total events on location and another at one of the WFO events in the fall. The Fathers day event is coming on June 18th, it's the reverse direction, more technical event of the series. More hills, more single track, etc. Always a fun day on this annual event. See you there! Perron manhandles D23’s Millville MX Opener

James Clough pulls a holeshot in the 65cc 7-11 class.

Millville, Minnesota - April 30 By Rolfe Otterness

J

oe Perron ran some strong races to top out the 14-24A and Open A classes as motocross competition resumed at Spring Creek Park after the winter break. Perron ran a number of Supercross races and seemed to be well up to the task of outdoor moto as he swept all four of his motos. Other riders who fared well after the hiatus were Josh Boaz, Mateo Johnson and Avery Long, among others who took multiple class wins. The track was in decent shape for the day with some ruts developing due to the copious amounts of precipitation in the weeks before the event, but remained dust free without watering due to the cloudy and very cool (actually COLD) temperatures for the weekend. At least it didn’t snow! Still, heavier gloves and jackets were in vogue. Class entries totaled over 400 as riders still took the opportunity for some spring dirt biking! There were a couple of track changes 58

CYCLE USA, June 2017

with the triple at the top of the hill swapped out for a double and another triple on the back side of the track dropped back to a double. The first moto of the Open A class featured Nick Jackson jumping out to an early lead on his KX450 with Joe Perron slotting into pursuit. Jackson was running a good pace and Perron tried making a move at the bottom of the pro hill and lost the front end. Jackson pulled out a pretty good gap and Perron had to charge to finally catch and pass him around turn one as they started the last lap. Perron locked down the win with Jackson an easy second at the checkered. A bit back ran Chase Becker for third with Austin Kienast and Nathan Kohnke rounding out the top five. Moto two featured Perron’s holeshot to checkers victory tour with Jackson grabbing second, a bit off Perron’s pace. Kienast and Becker had a pretty good battle from mid-race to the flag with Becker getting the best of it on the last lap and securing third. Kohnke once

again trailed Kienast to take fifth . Josh Boaz shot out into the early lead of the Schoolboy 2 class with Nick Fox and Gavin Janovsky providing pursuit. Boaz was just too quick for his competitors and inched away every lap to take the win. Janovsky pressured Fox and slipped by around the half-way point, then stayed sharp for second. Fox held on for third with Nick Wuertzer and Casey Paider running in to take the next two spots. Paider launched big in the next moto to pull the pack through turn one. Boaz was on his tail and slipped by quickly then settled into the lead. Paider ran a solid race to follow Boaz to the checkered flag with Fox taking third, Janovsky fourth and Wuertzer capturing fifth. Jayden Clough started near the front as the 85cc 9-12 class rounded turn one and quickly established a pace that would pull him away from the pack. Avery Long slotted into second with James Clough behind, then disputed second for almost the entire moto before Long proved up to the challenge and followed Jayden across

the line. Wyatt Mcgrath and Braden Long scooped up fourth and fifth. Jayden Clough motored into the lead once again in moto two with Avery Long in tow. This time Jayden had the lead for quite some time but Long managed to take the win. Jayden held on to second over James with Braden Long and Mcgrath running across the finish line behind them.
