From the Back of the Pack By Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman We are closing in on the end of another season, all too quickly in my opinion. It seems like it was not that long ago we were just getting into the best part of the season. The early weeks were extremely wet but the weather improved dramatically as the year progressed. We’ve seen new events added to our calendar, in off-road and even a Professional Hillclimb. I was lucky enough to get in a couple of loops at the Fall Theilman trail ride which is always one of the best days of riding one can experience. Despite heavy rains in the preceding week, and a flooding Zumbro river the Golden Eagles put on a fun event. Even without my favorite bottoms sections the event was well laid out. It was wet in spots but for the most part the trails were in great shape. Included on our calendar of events were some road events, in the form of Road Rides and Dual Sport rides. Another good sign for the future has been the increase in our beginner class sign-up numbers. We have not seen numbers like this for many years now. While I do not have our numbers for the season our memberships did increase this year and it looks like our participation numbers have also increased. We still have several off-road races yet to go. Be sure to attend one of them as it is always fun to try new forms of racing. There’s always something to be learned from crossing over. In district business, we have chosen our year end awards for our 50th Anniversary Season. Next up will be jackets for champions and class winners. Watch our website for all the specifics on the awards presentations and the awards. Our annual meeting will be held on December 15th, at the Bloomington Event Center, on American Blvd, starting at Noon. We will be mailing out a fall newsletter with all the info and a list of proposed rules changes for the 2019 season. We’ll have the 2019 season calendar of events finalized by the time of the annual meeting. All award winners will receive a letter in

Short Track Opener Finally, after multiple attempts the Aztalan Cycle Club was able to run their first Short Track event of 2018. Lake Mills, Wisconsin - August 25th By Bambi Yogerst

ztalan short track finally caught a break for a weekend of Short Track racing, after Mother Nature’s relentless furry earlier this season. One could feel the excitement around the pits after all the cancelled events there had been! Lots of sunshine, not too hot, track looked great, riders were ready to race! Feature event for the weekend was the 6th annual Ron Bean Memorial race for the Super Sr class. Two heats of 50 year old plus riders competed for the chance to have their name added to the Ron Bean trophy. T
ucked away in the Paul Bunyan Forest is a sweet little establishment called the Stomping Grounds Bar & Grill. Yes, it has great food, camping and some of the best trails for riding your dirt scooter. The Stomping Grounds graciously allows the Paul Bunyan Forest Riders to use their facility as the headquarters for the Akeley Enduro. Once again row 1A was given the Pohl Position in honor of Mike Pohl. This spot is left open, so Mike can still ride with us. Riders started out the day with very
comfortable temperatures and the soil was pretty good considering the rains. Things got a little hectic later in the day as word spread that a nasty storm was on its way. Luckily for everyone the worst of it hit south of the trails. Although when the clouds roll in and the rain started it was extremely hard to see in the woods creating another factor for the riders. It was clear that the Martinson brothers do a lot of riding in this area as they have a cabin not far from the trails. The three brothers stomped the competition, no pun intended, as Joe took the 200A class win. Alex grabbed the 250A class win and A overall win. This left Zach only to better the siblings by winning the
AA class and the Overall. Chad Tupper had one of his better rides taking first in the Senior A class followed by Garrett Hansen and Robert Goodman. Tanner Lokken has found his stride and has been putting in some consistent top finishes. This was his third consecutive win in Open A. Super Senior saw the return of none other than Joe Zierman. Zierman for those who don’t know was once one of the fastest riders not only in Minnesota but the US. One of only three Minnesotans to win a Gold Medal in the overall at the International Six Days Enduro. His Gold came at the 1988 ISDE in France. If you ever see him hit him up on it. It’s always entertaining listening to

the who, what and where’s of his racing ventures. Sneaking up in the overall top ten was Jacob Strang in the 200B class. Strang had a solid day placing eighth overall, first overall B and first 200B. Another notable ride came from Evan Sheff. Sheff placed right behind Strang in the overall and B while winning Open B. Our fast guys out of the C class came from the 250 class. Ryan Seamans put his mark on the day with the overall C win. Seamans has been leaving his mark all year and will definitely be testing his skills in the B class next year. Noah Patenode rode to a second place overall leaving Camron Langhorst for third in class. Jared Kvale took the last spot on the box for C overall and won Vet C followed by Andy Soteros and Chris Westerhoff. In all it was a successful race put on by the Paul Bunyan Forest Riders. Thanks to Curt Plzak for taking on Trail Boss duties. All that volunteered your work did not go unnoticed and we thank you as well and thanks to the Stomping Grounds for all their hospitality.

Springfield Mile Weekend

H
ot and steamy not only described the weather this Saturday evening but, also the action at the Springfield short track races. The stands were packed with excited fans waiting for some good old fashioned Midwest dirt track action. T-shirts were flying out of the vendors stands and ice cold refreshments and good food were popular. The pits were a bee hive of activity with racers prepping bikes and looking for the right setup to get to the front tonight. Track prep was ongoing and the track looked to be in excellent shape. Qualifying for the AFT Singles class was fast and furious. Fast qualifier Jeremy Orr on the #222 Honda CRF450R set the pace at 14.090 seconds. All riders through the 43rd qualifier were within one second of that time. The heats and semis were good battles all, but the best was yet to come in the final race of the evening. Dan Bromley, #62, on the KTM 450SX-F is the current points leader in the AFT Singles championship. This evening’s race would advance him closer 14

to the season championship. Jesse Janisch (#132, Roof Systems of Dallas/ West Bend HD, YamahaYZ450F) got the
holeshot on the field and looked to have the race in hand early. Bromley started in third and chased down his closest championship competitor Ryan Wells to pass him and go after Janisch. Janisch held the lead for most of the race, but Bromley got by with a nice inside pass entering turn three. From there the pair got away to a good lead over the rest of the field. Janisch held onto second with Wells steadily catching him, but Wells ran out of laps. Fourth and fifth places on the evening were Morgen Mischler (No.69, Cycle craft Yamaha/ Rohde’s Sales and Service, Yamaha YZ450F) and Oliver Brindley.

Sunday - The Mile!
The 100th running of the Springfield Mile has been anticipated all year. This legendary venue has produced fantastic racing seemingly forever, and this year, no less was expected. The stands were packed and ready for action. Could Jared Mees pull off his 12th victory of the season and sew up the 2018 AFT Twins Championship? Would Jeffrey Carver show his top form and repeat from the spring event? The air was electric as practice started on another supremely prepared track. Qualifying saw #14 Briar Bauman charge to the front with a fastest lap of 34.576 seconds. The top fifteen riders were all within one second of his time. Bauman carried on his fast moves to win heat race number one and semi final number one. Heat two and semi two were won by Jared Mees (#1). Heat three was all Davis Fisher, #67, onboard his Indian Scout FTR750. With the preliminaries over, it was a celebratory break before the final event. Several former champions of the Springfield Mile were introduced and honored. Former AMA National #1, Scotty Parker,
was gifted a jar of Springfield Mile dirt by the promoters. D17’s own Bill Tuman, one of the original Indian Motorcycles “Wrecking Crew” members from the early 50s, was on hand to share a bit of his experiences from the past. As the green flag waved, it was Bryan Smith out front with the rest of the pack close on his rear wheel. Smith led the next eleven laps with Mees, Jeffrey Carver (#23, Indian of Metro Milwaukee), Briar Bauman, and Henry Wiles in a tight pack. While this lead group pulled away from the rest of the field, these riders started swapping places every lap to the finish, with the lead changing nine times over the second half of the twentyfive lap race. If close racing is your thing, this was the race to see. The biggest gap from first to second was .510 of a second at the line, with four other riders wheel to wheel behind. Sometimes they were three wide on the straights. In the end, Smith won the battle 0.013 seconds ahead of Mees. However, Mees won the war, the Championship, with his second place finish enough to claim the top prize for this season. AFT Production Twins is an entry level
class to bring AFT Singles riders into the premier AFT Twins championship class. As such, riders are entering on more reasonably priced race bikes. This event had all riders aboard Kawasaki 650 Ninja based machines as they are readily available at a much lower cost compared to a Harley or Indian. The ten lap Production Twins final was won by #54 Michael Inderbitzin. Ben Lowe put in a good showing in second place with Tristan Avery filling in the last podium spot. Whatever you do, get here on Memorial Day weekend 2019 to see the best racers compete for the coveted Springfield Mile championship! I’ll be in a corner with my camera… give me a wave! H
ow can you beat a non-stop weekend of riding and racing? Fantasy Moto crew has the ball rolling now on the premier event called the Battle of Wisconsin in Tigerton WI. The competition levels at this event are starting to take off. Now that the Fantasy Moto crew is in their tenth year running events at this facility, it is an understatement to say that they have running races down to a science. The premise of this event is a little different than your standard motocross of racing just two motos. The battle of racing both supercross and motocross and combining the scores over the course of two days determines an overall winner in the 25 classes. This is a chance to stand on top of the podium, get interviewed in front of the crowd, and spray the champagne and celebrate. Saturday, had several events during the

day including a pretty impressive slip and slide kickball tournament that the majority of the kids and some adults participated in back by the creek before racing would ensue for the evening. As practice for Saturday night’s supercross got under way, more and more people were pouring in the gates and things were getting exciting. It was cool that Fantasy Moto invited anyone who lived in the town of Tigerton free admission to the event and it showed. United Rentals provided 8 brand new light plants to light up the track and it was as bright as the Griswold’s Christmas tree. One of the highly contested main events was the Schoolboy 1 class. Over the course of the ten lap main event, it was Jordan Biese and Wyatt Liebeck out front with Brandon Martyniak, Josh Bowman and Reed Klinger battling over the third spot. Lap after lap, the top five continued to push each other to the limits. At the checkers though, it was Liebeck
with the win ahead of Biese, Martyniak, Klinger in fourth and Bowman rounding out the top five. Ayden Price pulled down both the 85cc 9-11 and 9-13 main event wins. Both of these classes had nonstop action. In the 9-11 class, Price won both the heat and the main but no one in the top five was consistent after that. In the 9-13 class, Price took the win ahead of Ryder Beth who made the trip from Genoa City WI who was fifth in the heat and moved up to the number two spot in the main. Deegan Vanvreede was second in the heat race and he was able to put his KTM on the podium ahead of Gavin Templen and Jackson Oehlhof. After the heat race win by Brody Barth in the 65cc 7-11, it would seem that the smart money would be on him to win the main as he was looking good all day on his Woodstock KTM. The gate was nearly full in this class, and it was highly contested but Barth and Logan Kresal
were out front from the get go. Kane Kalies was right with the leaders on the early laps. Kyler Gollubske, Jayden Wolf and Ryan Berger were mixing it up behind the front runners. At the checkers the upset was Kresal with the win over Barth after a great fight. The final race of the night under the lights was the Open A class and it was set to be a twenty lap feature. Sportland 2 rider Josh Philbrick pulled the holeshot and right on his tail was Kaleb DeKeyrel, Blake Hansen, Bubba Ponton, and Bryce Backaus. Backaus quickly made short order of a couple riders and moved up to second. At the half way point, Backaus was all over Philbrick and he could smell the blood in the water. Philbrick was solid up front and not making any mistakes but you could tell Backaus was giving his AMP YZ everything it had. He was making up a little time every lap on the front straight away by clearing a jump after the front table that only a couple riders even tried all day. On lap thirteen Backhaus made the pass stick and the crowd went nuts. At the checkers Backaus held onto
to the win over Philbrick, Dekeyrel on his Southeast Sales Kawasaki who made the long journey from Texas rounded out the podium. Sunday morning we woke to sunny skies. After the riders meeting, it was evident that the numbers grew considerably for Sunday’s District 16 points paying action as more people pulled in late and also some that didn’t race Saturday night were there. 250C had the largest turnout all weekend and moto one was off and running with Kendall Biever, Tristan Woolf and Cole Godfrey up front. Godfrey made short work to take the lead. Riders were making moves throughout the moto and by the checkers it was still Godfrey out front, with Biever second, Woolf third and Braden Warner made his way up to fourth ahead of Max Mayer. In moto two, Dane Klinger got the holeshot and had a chance to shine after a bad start in moto onewhere he worked up to the eighth. Godfrey was running in second followed Mayer, Woolf, and Kevin Gollubske. Mid moto, Godfrey passed into the lead while Mayer was still
running third. At the checkers, Godfrey held onto the moto win and got the overall. Biever finished in third and his 2-3 scores gave him the runner-up spot. To determine the Battle of Wisconsin Champion in each class, you take the overall finish in Saturday night’s Supercross main event and the overall position on Sunday’s motocross. So Max Mayer for example won the Saturday night main event and took 4th overall on Sunday going 1-4. Biever took 2nd Saturday night and a last lap pass in the second moto gave him second overall on Sunday going 2-2 and earning his first Battle of Wisconsin Championship in dramatic fashion. Woolf ended up 5th Saturday night and his hard earned 3rd on Sunday gave his 5-3 scores third overall. Two Stroke B/C is always exciting to watch with the mixture of 125cc and 250cc two stroke riders mixing it up. Unfortunately DJ Gritzmacher brought his A game and won both the Supercross Saturday night and both motos on Sunday to be your champion. Behind him Brock Noreen was just as consistent getting second both days. Ian Beal took 3rd Satur-

day night and 5th on Sunday giving him the bronze medal on the podium. +40B/C results came down to the last lap on Sunday’s second moto as it was Jason Esker who took the Supercross win Saturday night over Andrew Bussen, Dave Peterson, Paul Haltvick and Lyle Longley. Sunday Justin Ernst showed up and had plans to mix it up with Esker and Bussen who were aiming to be champ. Ernst got out front moto one and held on to win the moto over Bussen, Tony Kalies Esker and Peterson. Moto two, all Bussen had to do was get a good finish to secure a championship and he did just that. He straight up won the moto. Ernst took second in the moto for second overall on the day. In the 85cc 9-11 and 9-13 classes, Ayden Price was dominant on Saturday night and he got his rest because he didn’t let up on Sunday winning both

classes. Deegan VanVreede was a solid second in the 9-11 both motos ahead of Ryan Bussen, Lance Torp and Milo Maas. In the 9-13 Ryder Beth took second both motos behind Price but ahead of VanVreede, Maas and Jackson Oehlhof. Open A finished off the day with a 20 minute moto and being last of the day, the track was good and rough. Blake Hansen pulled the holeshot in moto one ahead of Bryce Backaus, Justis Heckendorf, Josh Philbrick and Austin Hamburger. By lap two Philbrick had moved up a spot and was trying to close the gap on the leaders. Heckendorf was solid in fourth and Kaleb Dekyrel moved up into fifth. Mid moto, Hansen made a small mistake and Backaus took over the lead and held it to the checkers. Near the end of the moto Dekyrel made a move on Heckendorf and Philbrick also moved into the second spot.
In the second moto Backaus again took the win to be crowned your champion. Philbrick took the runner up spot beating Hansen who went 3-4 for third on the day and 3rd in the championship as well. As the long weekend wrapped up, plenty of smiling faces were heading out the gates with lots of hardware in tow. The cool part of this event is the Fantasy Moto crew gave us the best of stadium and outdoor motocross all in one nicely packaged weekend. Until next year when we can do it all over again.... S
oaring temperatures and high humidity didn’t stop The Flying Dutchmen Motorcycle Club from hosting the final outdoor flat track double header event of the season at their club grounds located just outside of New Ulm, MN. The venue is always a big draw featuring a 3/8 mile oval and a recently installed TT track on the infield for the quad contenders. For the past two seasons the local flat track community has seen the rise of popularity and with that a surge of female competitors. Recently a woman’s class has been added to the club’sprogram and a full field was on hand for the weekend. Sixteen year old Cloie Jellis from Sioux Falls, SD continues to dominate the division by scoring victories on both days. Jellis, a junior at Washington High School started racing after her father passed away three years ago. “He loved dirt bikes,” Jellis explained. “When I’m on the track I know he’s watching.” In her spare time Jellis, also performs volunteer work for a local dog rescue and mentors 9th grade students in Biology. 20

Another rising star in the woman’s division is Jillian Deschenes from Rogers MN. Deschenes, a mother of one daughter (who competes as well) became the first woman to win a main event in the #021 Andrew Wendorff and Tyler Mack square off in Open A.

She is only in her second year of racing yet with the help of her flat track competitors is steadily climbing the ladder of success. “I look forward to the Maddog class because it has lots of experienced riders on competitive/ comparable bikes,” Deschenes explained. “I take advice from fellow riders and soak it up like a sponge. To my surprise I gained the holeshot and to even more surprise no one shot past me on the straightaway like normal. I held my line and when I saw the checkered flag I was literally screaming in my helmet. It was my most memorable race yet and a feeling I will never forget.”
The Women’s class was topped both days by #143 Cloie Jellis over #31 Jillian Dechenes and #144 Trisha Dahl.
Other notable woman contenders include Trisha Dahl who scored a podium finish in the Maddog class at the recent “Battle of the Twins” indoor race last spring. And Allison Bailey who is a former class champion. There were several multi class winners on the weekend. Among them were Lowell Bronstad, Waylon Hastings, Verlon Langland, and Open Pro contender Kevin Walter. Plenty of bikes were on hand featuring larger classes, however due to conflicting
events the Quad entrants were on the downside. Nevertheless Andrew Wendorff topped the Open A and the Pro-Am classes proving that his racing program has been displaying continuing improvement throughout the season. Tim Bunn finished third after an earlier eleventh and Paul Blower went 9-4 for third overall. Marescalco’s hard work earned him second overall. Bunn’s 11-3 was good for fourth overall ahead of Lyle Longley (8-6). Ramsay and Day didn’t crack the top fifteen this moto after the first corner issues that also saw three other top seven riders from moto one not finish. Harold Gooch topped the “eldest” group of vet racers in the +65 class. The Minnesota native made it a good trip over as he won both motos on his enduro ready KTM. Cool thing is I have ridden all twenty-six of these Dirty Old Blaster races here at Aztalan so I’m glad to keep the streak going (said with great pride and a big smile).” Hebron, IL’s Robert Rewoldt after the second +65 moto, “I’ve raced this before, but havn’t raced the last two years so I thought I would come back out at sixtynine years old with the goal of racing at least once next year when I’m seventy. This is a lot of fun and the guys here did a great job of preparing it. Everyone in the +65 and +60 classes are really respectful and make it a good time to be out here. I started racing back in the 70’s on a CanAm at Byron and such before taking a couple years off before racing again in the 80’s and ever since.” The +25B/C class had fifteen riders. Moto one saw West Bend’s Zachary Wolf grab the holeshot and then lead all the way to the checkered flag, building a safe gap over the rest of the class. Cody Wolf ran in second before eventually dropping to fourth as Jeffery Bridges and Eric Leach pushed past on the second lap. Late in the moto there was quite a battle over second as Bridges had to really push it to fend off Leach. Chris Krajewski put in solid laps for fifth ahead of Nate White and Jacob Oldenburg. First moto winner Zachary Wolf didn’t start moto two leaving the door open for the overall. Oldenburg jumped into the lead right away off the start. Meantime, Leach was in front of Bridges in second and they quickly contin26

ued the contest from moto one, with Leach getting the upper hand this round. His 3-2 effort was good for the overall ahead of Bridges. Oldenburg locked in third overall (7-1) with his great second moto ride. Cody Wolf was mr consistent with another fourth place finish. +40A saw Todd Mayer take the first moto win ahead of Frank Weiss.... setting the stage for the all important second moto. When the gate dropped for moto two Weiss had a better start and led them onto the track. Mayer found himself in fourth, having to get around Brian Mc-
Canna and Joe Schuster (never an easy task) to even have a chance at Weiss. The race for second was pretty intense as the bar banging started right away. By the third lap Mayer had moved up, but not without some friendly bumping between the three riders. Weiss by this time was comfortably clear out front for the win and overall. Schuster held off McCanna as the two finished 3-4, a repeat of moto one. Joseph Beher went 6-6 for fifth overall after John Stewart and Marc Ottenad both had fifth place finishes combined with struggles in their other motos.

Waukesha, WI’s Tim Boblin used his long time Azzie experience to win both motos of the +60 class ahead of fifteen others. Rob’s Powersports rider Boblin after the win, “It came down to getting good starts. I knew Mike Zimmerman and a few others would be right there so getting off well early was important. I really want to thank everyone at Aztalan for doing such a great job to get the track in shape for this race after the week of rain we’ve had. Also Rob, Taylor and the team there at Rob’s for helping so many of us in our racing.” Michael Zimmerman put his Rob’s KTM 450 across the line for second ahead of Gary Behrens, Tim Dieball and Steven Sorge in the first moto. Zimmerman had his opportunity in the second moto but a late moto charge by Behrens not only took away second place in the moto but also the overall (3-2). Sorge also improved to beat Dieball in for fourth place. Topping the fastest riders of the day was Illinois’ Ty Tyrrell. He scored wins in +18A and then also +25A. Tyrrell, “Considering I don’t ride as much as I used to I’m having a pretty good day. It was good to win all four motos. I came out today because these vet races are usually a lot of fun and it was good to get away from work and back on the bike.” Brandon Marescalco finished second behind Tyrrell in both classes. The racing wrapped up late afternoon, just in time for the club to set lights and get ready for the evening’s Twilight Series racing. Pits bikes... and more pit bikes - plus youth and a few select other classes made for a fast paced entertaining evening. All this followed by more District 16 racing for everyone on Sunday. What more could you ask for out of a Wisconsin weekend? Echo Valley Featured Event Special D23 bonus event brings out a crowd Brookston, Minnesota - September 9 By Samantha Laderer
A
s the sun rose over the hills early Sunday morning at Echo Valley in Brookston, MN, you could see the pits were filled with campers, trucks and trailers. The trees and grass glimmered with dew that developed over night. It was race day. Some of the riders woke up calm but excited, while others woke up with the jitters as if they were already on the line. With double points, this Sunday brought extra pressure for those competing for a title in District 23. Although, the pressure was much more in the A classes. Even though 250A and Open A usually have some sort of a payout, today it was much more, as $3000 was up for grabs. Among the eighteen entries in the Open A class was Jerry Robin. “I haven’t rode here in probably seven years, so to see the track hadn’t changed too much, it brought me comfort,” said Robin. Robin was unable to practice on Saturday, so Sunday morning practice was his only chance to get a good look at the track. In the first moto Robin pulled the holeshot and gave himself a good lead right away. Zach Williams, who was projected to be Robin’s biggest competitor, 28

However, the red flag was thrown due to an issue with the gate, forcing a restart. Adrenaline was already pumping for the riders as they relined the gates. On the restart, Williams got the holeshot with Robin and Maus right behind him. Williams and Robin slowly pulled away. game of cat and mouse. Robin showed Williams his front tire a few times but was not able to get around him until he beat Williams to an inside rut in the back section. With Robin now in the lead and only a lap left Williams had to find a way back around in a hurry. The two continued to go wheel to wheel until the end. Robin took the overall with Williams in second and Maus third. “It was the cleanest but most aggressive battle I have ever had,” said Robin. The clean battle between the two really showed how much respect they had for one another. They both agreed it was the most fun the two had racing in a long time. Both Robin and Williams’s race at the professional level, so to hear that was good. Not only did the Open A riders have fun racing with intense battles, but also the girls in the Girls Sr. 12-16 class. Even though the results stayed the same between there was plenty of action. In the first moto, Lily Hall, who was new to Echo Valley, pulled the holeshot. The track she said was different from any she had rode before and she liked it because it challenged her. As she tried to pull away, the other girls pushed with similar speed. Autumn Schlauderaff and Jenna Ettesvold were right behind her. Hall was able to hold onto the lead the first three laps. Several times, she had seen Schlauderaff’s front tire. Ettesvold put pressure on Schlauderaff the first two
laps but fell back as she made a few mistakes. With Ettesvold not on her back tire, Schlauderaff was able to focus on finding a line to make a pass on Hall for the lead and that is exactly what she did. Ettesvold was able to hold onto third with Lily Johnson and Ella Storlie finishing out the top five. Second moto, Hall pulled the holeshot
again, but this time Schlauderaff got around her right away. Yet again, the three pushed each other and battled until the checkered, finishing within seconds of each other. Schlauderaff took the overall with Hall and Ettesvold behind her. “It was a great weekend,” said Hall. “I had some knarly battles, made some new friends and had amazing support from my family.” Between those knarly battles and the outstanding support from the community, friends and family that showed up, it was a weekend full of memories being made. Through racing, we experience many different emotions that are hard to explain. It is those emotions though that remind us why we ride in the first place. ox Valley Off Road this season has jumped onto the double header theme with all of this races being two day events. Many have stayed the weekend for a great time. This hot couple of days were no different with the exception of some nice new trails and the more technical direction of running the whole weekend clockwise which adds in many different hills and valleys. GP Racing kicked it all off Saturday where some of the biggest classes are filled by the "old people". Practice was going pretty well with the multiple lines on hills and passing lanes making for some interesting banging. Dad and son Hall got together on their Hall's Gas Gas machines. This meeting of the minds was ruff on the older of the duo, but Jay rode to the truck and became a spectator the rest of the weekend. As the day continued it was racing with the typical suspects in A and Open class hammering out laps. Today's Gp was a longer course at a 5 1/2 minute lap so five laps made for a nice long moto. First moto Blake Ryan holeshots Garrett Ward and the duo are back to the normal cat and mouse racing they’ve been doing. First moto win went to Ryan ahead of Ward, Jarred Hall, Jeremy Smith then Conner Robinson in his very first Gp race in fifth. Second Elijah Berryman won the motos are live engine start 200C class on Sunday. 32

riders Tanner Whipple and Matt Mcdonald would be in this A class mix, but today was fun day for them. Vintage class it was and the old Yamaha IT’s where their weapon of choice. Vintage class is combined with +50 so the old guys were trying to stay ahead of the kids on old bikes! Tanner and Matt went 1-2 overall but in the first moto Jarred Hall on his mint Old Husky passed through the pack for the win. Gp racing is a two moto format so the overall ends up being the final. If one didn't know better and showed up when that class was out there they would have thought it was 1978 as we had seven bikes in the class! The Women's class has been solid as Morgan Wheelwright and Autumn Torres have battled all year, and this race day was the same. Wheelwright holeshots the first moto with Torres in tow, pushing but never able to get by. Emma Jensen has been stepping it up lately and wasn't far off the pace. Jensen had her battles with younger sister to Autumn, Jaden Torres. Ali Kocher was in the mix too, but she found her way into a ravine and it took a lot of tugging and pulling to get her bike out of the hole. Second moto Autumn Torres pulled the start with Wheelwright in the position to try to pass. The moto ended with the girls finishing how they started which meant Autumn Torres takes the win, Wheelwright second. Third went to

Jaden with consistent fourth place motos. Side note, Autumn and Wheelwright are both full time college students. They take and drive home or meet dad / grandpa at the racing event to put in a race day. Great to see they still enjoy it after many years of racing. Day two with the Hare Scrambles also paying WFO Promotions points so many who race that series came over to go heads up with the locals. This course was longer, new single track and a few hills sprinkled in. Today's line up was a who's
who in up and coming kids in the sport with a few old guys sprinkled in. Newly signed BETA factory rider Cody Barnes and his 125cc screamer was ready to lead the way, Tanner Whipple, Matt Mcdonald, Colt Converse, Colten Zuidema, and the old guy David Stickle thrown into the mix. This group of kids have come through the ranks in IL racing with many championships and are always on top of their game. Barnes while leading snapped off his shifter with the bike in fourth gear and by the time he got back to
the area to get it fixed he had destroyed his clutch on the hills. This left Zuidema and Whipple to swap the lead over and over again. Towards the end of the race Whipple made a couple bobbles, giving Zuidema all the room he needs to take the win. Colt Converse early in the race had a couple issues but a quick stop, dad readjusts the suspension settings and he was off. Improving every lap but the two "kids" are to far out to make it a race. Stickle kept Colt honest but from a distance with Matt Mcdonald taking fifth

while recovering from knee surgery, making sure the feet stay on the pegs! The course had some different twists and kinks to it. Starting the afternoon race riders in the AA, A and B classes got the full rock creek experience this race, and then 2/3's the way up the single track along the road the course drops down another never raced before single track off camber. AA handled it well. A class started what was to be a huge back up when the leaders in the class decided to fall blocking the trail. Notable mentions for the HS racing this day, Elijah Berryman has been tearing up the circuit this season and today was no surprise this ripper shredded the competition easily overalling the morning Big bike race. Jeff Oldenburg went 1-1-1 this weekend in the +50B/C class, winning both the GP and HS. Riley Brueggeman was back after a fairly long time off his quad and the A class ATV group was as big as it's been in a long time. Kyle Burnham on his 2 stroke pushed Brueggeman the whole
race, passing once in a while. Brueggeman had a dismal start coming through the barrels in 9th overall out of a total of

he 2018 Super Series concluded on this warm September day with about 400 entries on hand for a last chance to improve their points situation. For some riders, such as Jayden Clough and Cameron Skaalerud, the difference between first and second in the series points would be decided in the very last moto of the class for the year. They went out and battled hard in both motos of the Schoolboy 1 class and flipped moto wins in the two races, but Clough topped the last moto giving him the over-

all and two critical points over Skaalerud for the season title. For some other riders it was just another chance to get some time in on the Spring Creek track before the season comes to an end. The track was in very good shape without excess moisture building the ruts and bumps to the more extreme side of the mx equation as has happened so much of the year. Ripping off the line to holeshot in moto one of Vet B, Mike Crotty led the pack through turn one. Brian McCarthy took over before they completed the first lap with Justin Rumpca pressuring Crotty as they started into lap two. Rumpca put on
a charge through the whoops to take over the lead with Sam Brummond moving into closer contention after taking over second. From there it was Rumpca out front while Brummond had a strong ride behind. Troy Buske passed McCarthy to grab third on the last lap and Crotty wound up in fifth. McCarthy led the pack throughout the first lap of moto two before Brummond and Rumpca charged by for a battle of their own out front. Brummond held on to win the moto with Rumpca applying pressure until a goof up in the area of the whoops on the last lap. Aaron Deer moved up to third over Buske and Trent Scott. Ethan Rennie led the 65cc 7-11 riders into moto one with Kyler Hagedorn slotting into second. They battled for the whole race and past the checkered with Rennie maintaining control for the win. Brian Madison ended up with third over Archer Sims while Zaine Randall took fifth after controlling third for the first part of the moto. Rennie surged into the lead in moto two and again motored off to the win with a bit more of a cushion over Hagedorn at the flag. Madison was back a bit in third while Randall snared fourth over Sims. Andrew Laybon mastered the start to lead the wild 250C pack going into the first moto and stayed out front for lap one with Casey Paider and Ian Miller on his tail as the crossed the line. Paider
has been a front-runner all season in this class and took possession of the lead in short order while Laybon worked at holding off Miller and Brandon Espe-Tiegs. Miller had dirt sample excursion on the next lap though and dropped far back in the pack, leaving Espe-Tiegs free to go after Laybon, which he did. Paider took the checkered with a decent lead over Espe-Tiegs. A gaggle of riders followed across the finish line then with Laybon, Dan Dvorak and Todd Miller in a battle to the end. Paider shot into the lead in the second moto and led until an over exuberant berm shot as he passed the announcer tower threw him to the ground. He had a spot of trouble getting the bike righted and much of the pack passed him before he could get underway. Espe-Tiegs inherited the lead with Dvorak and Ian Miller in tow. The two front runners battled for a while with Espe-Tiegs able to win with a few second lead at the flag. Miller snared third while Laybon took fourth over Paider who had charged up through the pack. Austin Nelson roosted out front in the first 250B moto but close behind him was a charging Jayden Clough. Nelson led much of the first lap but Clough blasted around the outside berm in turn 17 to go to the front. Clough was on a mission and started to pull away while Nelson found Drew Sampson and Payton Harrison were eager to take his place. They got into a tussle and shortly Harrison worked his way by both to take over second. Sampson also managed to make the pass stick on Nelson after another lap. That set the order for the top four at the finish with Levi Dertien rounding out the top five. Clough blitzed the start straight on his YZ125 to lead the 250B class as they hit the track for the second moto. Clough was flying and 38

though Harrison tried to keep pace he slowly lost ground to the leader. Behind Harrison there was a battle over third with Nelson, Dertien and Sampson in a scrabble. As the moto progressed Sampson slipped past Dertien and then Nelson on his way to third. When the checkered flag appeared for Clough he took the win with about a 12 second lead over Harrison. Sampson was back a bit but clear of the last lap battle between Nelson and Dertien who maintained that order across the line.

D16 Off-Road Finale The Rapid Angels Motorcycle Club delivered another great weekend of racing, kicked off with a cool GP race. Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin - Sept.15 Rapid Angels Motorcycle Club

ot sure how the 2018 District 16 Off-Road season slipped by so quick, but this mid-September weekend was the finale. A classic double header where GP racing takes place on Saturday and then the even more grueling Hare Scrambles on Sunday. Both counting for year-end points. With perfect racing weather on hand, the only complaint was how thick the mosquitoes were in the woods. This summer’s extra moisture took good care of those buggers.... but it also set up great conditions for the final race here in the sand. Racing kicked off with the A, AA and B class riders taking on the course. AA riders took the first drop and right away Rapid Angels club member Dylan Narel set the pace out front. Narel has plenty
of skills on the motocross track and is fast enough on the trails to hold his own so once out front it was pretty much his race to lose. Long time off-road front runner Pete Laubmeier ran well to finish second ahead of Mat Herrington and Chuck Garetson. In the second moto it was more of Narel out front after a first lap challenge from Garetson. As the race wore on Herrington kicked it up a bit to take over second place in the
moto and overall while Laubmeier had to settle for fourth behind Garetson. Zachary Brown rode well to finish second in the 65cc class.

Cole Nebel led both motos in the A class ahead of Heath Drone and Jeff Schmidt. Unlike in the AA class, the top three stayed pretty close through both motos assuring that each rider needed to be mistake free all race. Team 2/ Avail/ Fuzzy Fly Designs backed Nebel after getting the win. “I lucked out and got the holeshot in both motos but that track is really fluffy and there was a couple times I got really close to tucking the front end in it. I knew he (Drone) was close behind me the entire time as he’s good in the woods and I just tried to keep that from playing into my riding too much. This has been a good season and I hope the points shake out tomorrow so I can end up in second for the season. Either way this has been a fun year for sure.” The B class riders put on a good show as Lodi, WI’s Jesse Caballero pulled the holeshot ahead of Lukas Erdmann, Tyler Lueschow and Brent Hanke. When they finished the first of three laps Caballero was beginning to open a small lead as Erdmann was getting pushed hard by Hanke who had slipped past Lueschow. The next two laps saw more juggling, all of it behind Caballero. Lueschow regained his pace and worked back past Hanke and then Erdmann. On the last lap Hanke snuck into third ahead of Erdmann as Madison Motorcycle Club’s Patrick Mullarkey finished fifth. Caballero’s good ride unfortunately wouldn’t be duplicated as he didn’t run in moto two. With the door open for the win the other top riders were quick to continue their first moto efforts. Erdmann led them all through the first half lap as Hanke held off Lueschow, Johnathan Geary and Mullarkey. The shuffling

the start and then I think one of the faster woods guys caught up to me. I made a few mistakes - not being used to the woods. I was able to get some time back after we re-entered the MX area but my clutch was going away. I snubbed it and had to get the cable back on to re-start. I rode as hard as I could to get back past a few riders and get third. I usually only race motocross but kept hearing about this type of race from the Narels. I tried it last week at Marshfield and then again today because it was so much fun. I love the GP racing with the longer motos and the challenge of the mixed riding. I’d definitely tell anyone racing only motocross to come out and try it.” The second wave of classes on the track included a twenty-one rider C class that saw the closest of racing up front all day. New Glarus, WI’s Noah Dalsing not only got a good start but then really turned the throttle to open a gap through the first lap. CYCLE USA, October 2018

Luke Vanlyssel led Michigan’s Elliot Bennett and a number of others in a close battle for second early on. After finishing the first lap, it seemed Vanlyssel (an MX regular) started putting the course together as he closed half the gap before the riders finished the second of three laps. Dalsing rode just fast enough to keep Vanlyssel off his rear fender to take the win as Bennett held on for third ahead of Brody Reese, Iowa’s Aaron Sirko and hometown rider Falen Narel. The second moto saw a number of riders taking soil samples in the first lap of the now deeper and even more loose sand. Sirko led early before Vanlyssel took over. Once there, Vanlyssel pulled away for what turned into an impressive ride that earned him the class overall (21). Late in the race, Bennett worked into second as Sirko slipped back to fourth. First moto winner Dalsing wasn’t even a factor after the first half lap as he was stuck way back in the group. Dalsing put on quite a charge to literally slice his way up to third place. Dalsing, “I had a good start and actually moved into first. On the first big downhill I went into the corner too fast and it was like the bars twisted and off I went. Everyone passed me. From there I just knew to ride hard, smooth and make up as many spots as possible. It really helped to just keep more speed up in the sand corners and be smooth. Last year I wasn’t doing as well and then I got the Yamaha and it is so much better. This year has been really good. I’d really like to thank my mom

for all she does for me and my racing!” The +40 class saw District 16 President and long time Rapids club member Todd Ellingson take the holeshot ahead of Pete Laubmeier and Greg Steffes. Laubmeier wasn’t impressed with the sand roost being kicked in his face by Ellingson’s Honda CR500 and immediately put his Gas Gas’s horn to full use. Not sure if it was all in fun or an intent to distract... but you could here it almost non stop all through the woods. Ellingson eventually let the off-road speedster by but not before feeding him as much sand as possible. I’m guessing both riders were smiling for different reason during the extended exchange. Laubmeier went on to take the win as Steffes held on to third ahead of Johnathan Geary and Mark Jorgensen. In the second moto that same scenario played out in the front. Ellingson leading off the start and Laubmeier trying not to eat too much roost. Difference this time was as they took the white flag Ellingson was still holding on to the lead. Half way through that final lap the two were fender to fender with Steffes and Geary back a ways in third and fourth. Michigan’s Joshua Bennette was fifth.

Moose Racing’s Laubmeier after the moto, “Todd Ellingson here on his 500 is so hard to beat. He’s smooth, has a lot of horsepower behind him and knows how to ride sand for sure. I stuck close knowing I was a little faster in the woods and
managed to sneak by on the last lap for the win. It was a great race and I’m a bit spent as this was my fourth moto. The team here did a great job here and with the moisture coming out in the wooded areas those trails were a lot of fun.”

Asked about his new ride... he continued, “Hall’s down in Springfield, IL has been a GasGas dealer for years and I’ve heard good things about the new bikes. I talked to Jay there about giving one a try and I really like it. I have the 300 Enduro
model with the light and all... including the horn, so that can be fun as well (said with a big smile, as we already knew he enjoys having it). The bike is bullet proof and has all the good components and the right dealer behind it.” The +50 riders put in the day’s most consistent rides as Carl Johns topped the class in both motos. Behind him, it was Bryan Nebel, Mike Dean and John Vasen going 2-3-4 in both motos. As the day wrapped up, most everyone could be found tinkering in the pits as they got everything ready for Sunday’s

Hare Scrambles race. This weekend marked the end of another fine season where the GP racing is not only becoming more welcomed by the hare scrambles regulars, but a growing number of motocross riders. ate September Sunset Ridge returned to action with their double header weekend with tons of racing action and a Pro-am thrown in on Sunday for some extra action for the spectators. It was a great Midwest weekend for racing with great weather and the track was fantastic with lines all over for some great passing and exciting finishes. The Sunset Ridge crew always keeps things running extremely smooth and this weekend was no exception. The laps ticked by all weekend with the track staying watered and in the best condition possible. The fall season is upon us with racing winding down all around the district; it certainly seems it goes by faster every year. This season seen a lot of rain and cancelations, along with record heat and humidity; we have certainly been through a lot. That didn’t take away from all the great racing we’ve seen and much of it coming right here in Walnut... a trend that continued this weekend. Early in Sunday’s race day a great battle came in Open C. The first moto ended with Joe Quest taking the win followed by Luke Jackson and Austin Edwards. The gate dropped for the second moto as Quest jumped out front with Jackson and Cody Gunnel right behind. Coming up the hill Jackson was able to jump out front moving leaving Gunnel in third, fighting off the twenty other riders looking to move up. After the first lap things CYCLE USA, October 2018

shook up some more with Jackson now leading Gunnel and Edwards. Quest was out of the race after his earlier first place finish. The top three were very close for the last several laps with Gunnel making several attempts at getting by Jackson. Jackson was riding smart and smooth keeping the pace and eventually pulling away. Coming across the line that left Jackson in first to take the overall, Gunnel’s second place also gave him second overall ahead of Edwards’ 3-3. Open B was certainly saw an interesting turn events for the day. The first moto took off the gates with Eddie Norred out in front for the holeshot followed by Ben Ibianskas and Tyler Collins. Heading through the sweeper Ibianskas shot past Norred as many riders were testing lines in an effort to move up quickly. The battle up front between Ibianskas and Norred was very tight. Heading into the third lap Norred made it back to the front. On the last lap Ibianskas was able to re-take the lead and hold it across the line with Norred second and Collins keeping third locked down
the entire race. The second moto is where things got interesting with Ibianskas and Collins both not starting. This left the door open for Norred to ride on to a first place and take the overall. Hunter Billingsley fought back from a fourth in the first moto to take second for second overall. Matthew St John finished third in the moto, but Nathan Rega’s 5-4 grabbed third overall. Of course the Pro-Am was running today with a ton of good racing. Cody Williams out of Wisconsin running national number eighty two was out and giving everyone a fast pace to keep up with. In the first Open A moto Williams took the win with Tyler Lowe in second and Nick Inman third. The second moto got underway with Williams jumping out front

and blasting through the first few turns, Inman right behind with Trey Moore on the hunt in third. Coming around for lap three Justin Kelly was able to get his Honda up to third with Inman still within striking distance and the chase was on. Williams opened a large gap by midmoto as Lowe was on the move after a bad start, sticking the inside on several riders working his way into fourth to take on Kelly. It was a great battle to watch as Lowe as able to finally make it around Kelly. Unfortunately the laps ran out on them and the finish came up with Williams sweeping the day with the overall, Inman second overall and Lowe in third place.
Nicholas Inman rode hard for 3-2 scores in the 21 rider Open Pro-Am class, grabbing second overall.
250A Pro-Am was a similar situation with Williams winning both motos, Lowe in for a solid second and Conner Burger with two third place finishes. It was a great weekend out at Sunset Ridge as always, with awesome weather, a great turnout and an awesome track for everyone to test their skills on. As I mentioned the cooler weather will be here before we know it and there isn’t much racing left for everyone this year with several tracks already running their last race of the year. Riders couldn’t have asked for a better weekend to get out and ride and the track held up to some serious punishment over the two day stretch. Be sure to check into Sunset Ridge’s
