GET

THE RIGHT G RUBBER U Buying new tires for your bike doesn’t need to be difficult if you know the answers to a few key questions: What type of riding do I typically do? Do I want the same tires that I currently have? Do I know what size tires I need? There are multiple tire size numbering systems, and it can get pretty confusing. Make sure to educate yourself on tire sizes and speed ratings before selecting your tires.

THE DENNIS KIRK TIRE FINDER at: denniskirk.com/tires-and-wheels com/tires-and-wheels / takes the guesswork out of finding the right rubber for your ride.

Moto City Great, Rain or Shine

Staples, Minnesota - April 9 By Samantha Laderer

T

he 2017 District 23 motocross season is now in full swing. As normal some riders got a new race number, others were lucky and got a new bike, but for some it meant moving up a class and racing with a new group of people. This can be frightening to some, but to others it is exciting. One rider in particular that was excited about moving up was Jamison Mutschler from Wimbledon, North Dakota. Jamison and his dad, Jett, showed up early Sunday morning after driving straight from riding at Ponca the day before. Since moving up to the 65cc class, they have been working hard at getting everything dialed in. The north track was new to him since last year they focused on his 50, which only runs on the south track. This year Jamison is running in the 65 and 85 7-9 classes. In the first moto on his 65, he got a bad jump off the gate and had difficulty in the second corner when his front tire slid out. By the time he was able to get his bike up, he was in last place. Seven riders stood between him and Brady Karolevitz, who was leading. After he got going, he was able to patch together some really good laps and make his way past all

seven riders and into second. Karolevitz was now in his sight, but went on to take the win. Right before the second moto, it started to rain so Jett piled tear-offs on to Jamison’s goggles. To Jamison, the rain was a good challenge. “I like mud races,”

said Jamison. He went into the moto with a positive attitude. He got a better jump but Karolevitz was able to beat him to the first turn. Not much into the race, Karolevitz went down and Mutschler took over the lead. Mutschler was able to keep it on two wheels and put together some good laps. Karolevitz was able to get back up and make his way through some of the riders to second place. Behind the excitement up front, the three way battle for the fourth was on fire. Cash Peterson, another North Dakota native, along with Blake Gyldenvand and Wyatt Larson were back and forth many times. It kept racing interesting mid pack right to the end. Colton Steiger was new to the Staples track as well. Steiger, who is from La Crosse, Wisconsin, has been racing District 23 for a few years but had never gotten to check out any of the northern tracks. After racing Staples, he is now hooked on the northlands prime dirt/ sand mix. Steiger lined up for his Open B moto with hopes of a good start and the rain to stay away. He knew the track would be a Jamison Mutscher on the gas. www.cycleusa.com, May 2017 7

little wet and wasn’t fully sure yet how it would hold the moisture, but remained confident. The gate dropped and he got a start behind Austin Aspros and Carter Reece. He pushed through the roost and held onto third. Reece and Aspros battled up front for the lead. Aspros was able to find a smoother line and pass Reece for the lead toward the end of the second lap. Behind Steiger, Marcus Evenson tried to catch him but wasn’t able to find the speed. In the second moto Steiger struggled a little and wasn’t able to find the same speed as the first moto. This time, however, Stephen Morgan, a Canadian native, was able to stay on two wheels and hold onto the third position. Aspros and Reece again battled up front and had a very similar race to the first moto. Evenson was consistent in the fourth position, right ahead of Steiger. Steiger said he was very impressed with how well the track held the rain. “It’s honestly one of my new favorite tracks to ride.” He went onto say how he liked the layout and how fast you could get going and still be able to hit a corner with good speed. The track had great flow. So although it rained and some mud was made, the track held up very well and riders loved it. Newer riders were impressed and look forward to coming back. Rain or shine, the racers were going to line the gates and give it a shot and they were happy they did. The season has now begun and riders are pumped to see how 2017 will go. 10 www.cycleusa.com, May 2017

he season opener for District 14, 16 and 17 enduros was held in Roselawn, IN. Beautiful weather, great trail and huge turnouts were the names of the game for this weekend. On Saturday, the Grand Kankakee Trail Riders put on the first round of Family Enduros, the Sand Booger Family Enduro. 325 riders showed up to hit the eleven mile sandy loop that Mr. ISDE, Jeff Fredette and his crew had put together. Family enduros have classes to accommodate everyone from 4 year old kids to pros. They had a loop set up for the twelve different classes that are of-

classes would join in for the remaining loops. The GKTR club does a great job on providing a small educational session on what the different checkpoints and other aspects of enduro racing means and is a great idea for the newcomers to this style of racing. On Sunday, the rider count jumped up to 336 entries coming from all over the Midwest for the 15th annual Sand Goblin Enduro. The fastest guys from AMA District 14, 16 and 17 squared off against the clock and each other over 60+ ground miles of racing. Five special tests ran across 18+ different landowners’ property, utilizing old trail mixed with fresh cut virgin trail. One of the biggest and most competitive classes for the day was AA, with a twenty-three rider showing. Grand Champion for the

day was Airgroup/ EE Husqvarna rider Tyler Vore. The Indiana native took the win by a mere twenty-nine seconds over fellow Indiana boy Sam Mattingly. Third in AA was Michigan resident Talon Soenksen. Anthony Krivi and Bren Raschke, both out of Illinois, rounded out the top five. One of the biggest surprises of the day was 16year-old Tanner Whipple who put a hurting on the 250A class by over six minutes, was awarded Overall A and finished an incredible 6th overall. Whipple, who is typically a hare-scramble rider, has a bright future in enduro racing. Second in 250A was Yamaha rider Daniel Sims, followed by Hall’s Husqvarna rider Jeff Kaylor. The Open A class was

topped by Kawasaki mounted Tyler Darmon. KTM riders Conner Gynn and Chadwick Brown rounded out the podium. Robert Kau, from Wisconsin, took the +30A class victory by a slight 53 seconds over Robert Cribbs. Tyler Jarvis finished third. The thirty-two rider +40B class was topped by Ohio native Gary Thomas. KTM riders Troy Warstler and Matt Heeres finished second and third. KTM rider Wally Mika, out of Illinois, topped the +60 class over fellow KTM riders Richard Mertes and Jeffrey Fisher. Not only does the Grand Kankakee Trail Riders put this event on to keep the sport of enduro racing alive in hopes to get others involved to help put on events for others, they do a great job of protecting the riders

that race and help out the local services. GKTR donated $2000 to the Lincoln Township Fire Department in return for a lunch for all riders as well as a “rescue squad” at each checkpoint. If there is an injured rider, fellow Fire Department members are dispatched to the downed rider to help. The club also donated $400 to the Newton County Sheriff Department to keep an eye on everything and help with traffic control at the road crossings. First Trials Event of 2017 Mauston opens the District 16 season Mauston, Wisconsin - April 23 By Kevin Huber

O

n April 23rd the Wisconsin Observed Trials Association had their first event of the season on Noel Smage’s land near Mauston, Wisconsin. Everyone must have had the itch to ride because there was a large turnout of 54 riders. This included riders from Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, and Illinois. There were an exceptional number of entrants with the last

name Smage. This included Noel and three of his sons, Pat the eight time National Trials Champion and Phil, who is known for many shows including playing Captain America in the Marvel Universe Live thrill show. Joining this year was their older brother David. Additionally there were some of Noel’s nieces and nephews as well as a future daughter-in law that competed. Pat Smage was amazing to watch as he ended the day with only one dab. He also went

One section near the pits has a small ramp added so the Champ class could launch up to the top of a very large rock face. This put on a good show for the numerous spectators that were there. When all the riders had completed the course there was some additional entertainment. Four small sections were made on the flatter ground in the woods for some of the rider’s kids to play on with their electric trials bikes. A couple really young kids even rode “strider” bikes that had no pedals or motors. They just sat and pushed themselves along with their feet. Fast Racing at Little Falls down which helped Mason catch his brother. At this point, the Marty brothers were running in first between the two classes. Among those to go down was Devin Stang, he was trying to make a pass for first during the first lap but ended up crashing into another rider. Once back on the track he was on the gas. “It was hard to catch people in the A/ B class because C had dropped behind us,” said Stang. He was able to fight his way back to fourth. Both took in consideration the small mistakes that were made and agree that they have some work to do. “It is time to put my head down and get to work before qualifiers,” said Robbie. Race seven, the 125 class had brought on another intense battle between two boys who have grown up racing together and consider one another to be extended family. Curtis Biorn and Drew Sampson both recently moved up to bigger bikes from the Supermini class. The boys used to go head to head quite often when on their 85’s, so it is no shocker to see them still doing so on 125’s. Biorn knew as soon as the gate dropped that it was going to be a challenge. Going into the whoops on the third lap Sampson was able to make a

smart pass on Biorn. However, he wasn’t able to make it stick for more than a turn or two. Biorn got him back and then knew for sure that he couldn’t risk making another mistake if he wanted the win. With Biorn and Sampson pushing each other hard in the top two spots, Jordan Braaten was trying to chase them down in third. He pushed hard but wasn’t able to find the speed to catch the two young riders up front. Biorn was able to hang on to first with Sampson finishing right behind. In the second moto both Biorn and Sampson knew that they needed to get a good start and take an early lead. At this point the track had formed great corner lines but was getting slightly rough. As they shot off the gate, Biorn had a tire on Sampson. Even though Sampson wasn’t able to make another pass on Biorn like he had in the first moto, he stayed very close. Braaten struggled to keep their pace, but he was able to stay ahead of Blade Goding to take third. “Drew has gotten really fast,” said race winner Biorn. “But so have I. I just need to work a little harder.” Biorn also stated that he had a lot of fun racing with Sampson again after a long winter and that his favorite part of the track now was the large triple in the back. All these boys have grown up riding together and even though some may not

LTM Classic track racing Casey, Illinois - April 9 By James and Rollanda Pinckard

G

reat weather and another huge crowd were on hand for racing on the Classic track. While some riders like the Bomber track better, no one can argue the motocross history the Classic track represents. Riders today get to ride the basic same track riders have turned laps on since 1973. Sixteen riders in the 85Sr class set out to create their own history on this special track. Right from the start Yamaha rider Mason Lutz was on the gas and owned the first moto. Yamaha rider Samuel Boyer finished a strong second with John Boneau third. In the second moto Boyer wanted his turn in the spotlight, ripping a good start and putting the hammer down. Boyer led every lap taking the moto win and overall. Lutz wasn’t haunted Boyer to the end but couldn’t find his way around and finished second. Third for the moto went to Nick Lampe

but with his sixth in the first moto left him fifth overall. Kawasaki rider John Boneau Jr showed that being consistent pays off as his two fourth place finishes gave him third overall. Some of the same riders lined up in 85 Open. This has riders from both the Jr and Sr classes, giving riders a chance to really see how their speed matches up. Twenty-one riders lined up to find out. In the first moto it was KTM rider Mark Fineis showing his 85Jr overall win wasn’t a fluke. Fineis was flawless on his way to the win. Sr rider Samuel Boyer had a strong ride for second while Connor Thompson finished third. In the second moto Fineis again showed the pack the fast way around taking the win and overall. Mason Lutz was in second for every lap except the one that counts, getting passed by Boyer on the last lap. With the pass Boyer finished second for the moto and overall. With a sixth in the first moto Lutz was handed fourth overall. Third went to Jr rider

Thomas Wojtasow with two fourth place finishes. The +45 class is a trophy class that was supposed to be a catch-all of riders not chasing money. The thing is I think they forgot to tell the riders! Fifteen riders blasted out of the gate and they meant business. Yamaha rider Mark Smith was both fast and smooth, bringing bad news for the other riders. Smith took the first moto win while Yamaha rider Paul Mumper worked his way into second with Chad Scharlow third. In the second moto Smith again showed he wanted his place in the history books, taking the win and overall. Kawasaki rider John Dixon put in an impressive ride to finish second, good for second overall. Scharlow finished third for the moto but the tie breaker went to Dixon. In +40 Mark Smith said ‘show me the money’ as he took the first moto win. KTM rider Joe Buskirk was flying, but finished second with John Dixon third.

Mark Smith leads the +45 class.

In the second moto Smith again showed all his cards and took the win. Buskirk finished second with Kawasaki rider Andy Brown third. In +30A Honda rider Ryan Lewis took the win with Adam Wright second, ahead of Mark Smith. In the second moto Lewis was in the grove once again, taking the win and overall. The +30B class was as easy as 1-2-3. Honda rider Travis Wait had things under control taking both moto wins and the overall ahead of Aaron Carter and Yamaha rider Eric Zimmerman. Some of the biggest racing came from the smallest bikes. Fourteen riders were on the line for the 50Jr class. Ohio’s Case Stillings took the first win ahead of Connor Cooper and Maverick Snider. In the second moto Stillings said ‘see ya’ and took another win. Snider improved his spot to second which gave him second overall. Cobra rider Ryder Demott finished third besting, the moto scores of

Cooper for third overall. What an exciting day of racing! With all the finishes in the books don’t miss your chance to come place your name on the win list at LTM, joining the company of riders like Chase Sexton, Jace Owen, Kelly Smith and so many others. Nuke Opener Delivers Pure Moto Perfection! Byron, Illinois - April 2 2017 Nuke Series Opener

T

he 2017 Barone Spinal Care Nuclear Series kicked off in grand fashion during the first weekend of April. While Motosports Park is known for presenting some of the best track prep anywhere, today was even better yet. Rain much of the week had many asking if there would even be a race. Aaron Vincer’s answer was “YES, it was going to be nice out on Saturday... the track would be good to go”. After delaying Saturday’s open riding a bit, riders took to a still pretty wet and sloppy track. The drainage system had done it’s work well considering all the earlier rain. Sunday morning practice saw bikes coming off the track with very little mud under the fenders. The track was already near perfect and it just kept getting better. Sixty degrees, a little overcast - it was just right for a fantastic opener to the 2017 racing at Motosports Park. The

65cc class riders on the line...

track formed deep lines - awesome traction in the corners and a lot of close racing. It isn’t often you get soil requiring no early morning scraping and then no watering all day... the kind that can be tilled up at half time and be picture perfect. You know, the soft stuff you dream of ripping up. This was one of those special days. Second moto of the day brought fourteen 85Sr riders to the line. Right from the gate drop a number of regular front runners from last year were out front. Wyatt Liebeck was among half the class having made the trip down from Wisconsin as they wait for their season to kick off. Liebeck immediately jumped into the lead and right away began putting a gap on the others. Elijah Tetzlaff had his SE Sales Kawasaki in second before Mitchell Malaney pushed past for second half way into the first lap. Also on the gas, IL’s Anthony Edgerton caught Tetzlaff as they began lap two and made a

pass for third in the start area corners. From there the top four held position with Justin Oehlhof running a solid fifth. It didn’t take long for the order out front to get set in the second moto. Liebeck led everyone through the first turns then inched away to wrap up his overall. Malaney ran in second all the way as Oehlhof worked up to third late in the moto, with a little help. Edgerton had been in third, but slipped back a spot, and Tetzlaff found himself sitting trackside with issues and couldn’t finish. Edgerton still grabbed third overall (3-4) ahead of Oehlhof and Cole Decker who went 7-5 for fifth. Eight riders left the gate in the first 50Sr (7-8) moto, all being led by Brody Barth on his KTM. Logan Kresal made a couple quick passes in the first lap to take over second as Noxx Lewin moved into third ahead of Nolan Simonton and Jaxson Schiller. From there the order held to the end.

Eddie Norred working the ruts just right on his way to a win in Schoolboy 1.

By the time the second moto kicked off some of the corners had a few deep ruts, but even that couldn’t break Barth’s fast pace, as he led every lap in convincing form for the win. The ruts played into the final results for others, as Lewin got hung up just long enough for Kresal to take over second, half way through the moto. Schiller found some good lines as well to finish fourth ahead of Simonton for the moto and overall. In the younger 50Jr class, Lincoln Paxton took both moto wins ahead of fellow District 17 rider Tom Luberda. 85cc 9-11 had a number of quick young riders as well. Oak Lawn, IL’s Krystian Janik rifled through the first turn to grab the holeshot, leaving no doubt of his intentions for the day. Once there he pulled away, leaving the others to fight over second. Ayden Oppenlander had a good jump and ran in second until the first series of jumps, where Joey Promenschenkel pushed past for the runner-up spot. Wi’s Ayden Price was on Promenschenkel’s back tire as they went into the rutted final corner to finish the first lap. Promenschenkel stuck his front end and went down. Price managed to sneak by

Krystian Janik was super fast all day in his mini classes.

as Promenschenkel got back up to hold onto third. As the laps ticked away Oppenlander held fourth, now with a lot of company from Jackson Oehlhof and Deegan Cooley. The order stayed the same with Janik taking a comfortable win. In the second moto, Janik went under Price in the second corner to take the lead. From there, it was all those two out front. Promenschenkel was pushing Oehlhof hard during the first lap, trying to take over third. As the two were next

class. In moto one he went to the front right away and never looked back as Steven Minkus was quick to get into second ahead of Matthew Speers and Sean Prenner. Minkus held second to the end as the others kept juggling positions all moto. When it was done, Tanyon Parker had worked up to third, making a final pass on Joseph Rakowski in the last lap. Prenner finished fifth ahead of Nathan Wilson and Jake Luchini. Wuertzer after topping the second moto as well. “It has been a good day so far. I got the holeshot and just pulled away again. The track is pretty darn good and I had fun. This is my first race of the year so I’m just trying to ride consistent. It’s important to power through the breaking bumps and pick good lines as the track is getting really rough, a good rough.” Chadwick, IL’s Matthew Speers had a much better outing this time after finishing ninth in the first moto. He dropped to each other, Promenschenkel bobbled in behind Wuertzer off the start and held enough to let Oehlhof pull away a bit. second all the way ahead of Nathan WilTwo laps later the two continued the batson and Minkus. Speers also as Cooley crossed in fifth. rode here, going 3-4 for third overall Open C saw Iowa’s Nick Wuertzer ahead of David Fitzpatrick and Tanyon grab both moto wins in the sixteen rider Palka. As expected, the 250B class Wauconda, IL’s Birgit Schelkle won both motos in +30B/C. delivered a great show. Matthew Mcdannel led early before being dropped back to fourth. Getting into the lead early in the first lap was Paul Law. Coming on hard, Rj Mackenzie and Brice Hansen immediately pushed Law creating an exciting contest. Hansen made the trip down from WI a good one as he sliced his way into the lead before the second lap was complete. While he built a little gap, Law and Mckenzie went at it hard. After trading spots twice going into the final lap, Mackenzie capitalized on an error by Law to finish second with just two track sections to go. Logan Rusk rode to fourth ahead of Randy Mclaughlin and Mcdannel.

Nolan Dickinson had a big day, including his win in the 125cc class.

Hansen cleared the first couple turns in the lead of the second moto and never flinched, running out front to the end. Law was right there again battling with Mackenzie for second. Mackenzie had a quick tip over while trying to make a mid-moto pass, then had to settle for third as Rusk finished fourth. Later in the day Hansen also got the best of Mackenzie in the Open B class. The two put on quite a show as they went 1-2 in both motos ahead of Jake Garwood and Scott Koistra who also had two close motos in the fourteen rider class. +50A saw Roy Nafzger and David Hayes take turns out front a couple times through the first moto, before Hayes grabbed the win. Back a bit, Joseph Voegtle led Orville Kline in for third. The always crafty Nafzger came back in the second moto to take the win and overall ahead of Hayes. Seems like even after all these years, Nafzger can still turn it up another notch in the second moto when it counts the most. He’s been doing it for years now.

Peter Parenti had his way in the 65cc 7-9 class, leading every lap for the first moto win. Behind him, Deegan Vanvreede and Brody Barth were rubbing plastic all moto in a great battle that went right to the finish line where Vanvreede held onto second by inches. Back a little ways, Wesley Johnson ran in fourth, kept honest by Logan Kresal and Iowa’s Dandre Roos. Parenti pushed his Husqvarna hard through the first corners to grab the lead once again in moto two. Vanvreede was also on the gas to take over second by the third corner. Once out front they gapped the class and held their own to the finish. Barth was into third early, trying to pull away from a close and fun battle over fourth. Roos fought much of the moto with Kresal and then they pulled Barth into the action by mid-moto. When it was all done and said, Kresal had the biggest smile having finished third just ahead of Barth and Roos. In 65cc 10-11, Kristian Janik created his own challenge. While out front and already pulling away on the opening lap, he went down all by himself. Team Green Kawasaki’s Janik, after the moto, “I got the holeshot, then went down. Just tucked the front end in a corner and fell over, so I was in fourth then. After a couple laps I was able to start catching up to the leader and made a pass near the end for the win. The track is really good. A little slick in a few spots but getting better for sure.” Janik had to knock off some quick riders on his way back to the front, including Hunter Savage, Ayden Oppenlander and then finally Deegan Cooley. Janik put his Kawasaki out front to stay in the second moto. Ayden Price settled for fifth in the first moto, but was looking for some improvement this time out. He ran in second early, dropping to third as the pressure applied by Cooley eventually got to him. Price’s 5-3 was all he needed for fourth overall behind Oppenlander (3-4). Gavin Templen finished the moto in fifth. The Open A class saw Brice Hansen challenge everyone in the first lap only to slip back to third before the lap ended. Once out front, Zach Coons put in solid

Wyatt Liebeck grabbed both moto wins in 85cc 12-15

laps to pull a small lead on Ty Tyrrell and Hansen. In the final laps, Hansen continued to show his speed, but he just couldn’t get consistent laps to take a shot at Tyrrell, finishing in that order with Parker Smith and Daniel Sanders going 4-5. Hansen grabbed the second moto win for fourth overall... if nothing else but to prove he was fully capable of topping the class. Big winner of the day was Coons though, as his 1-2 set of motos earned the overall. Kelly finished third once again, as Tyrrell could only climb his way up to fourth this moto. A light drizzle arrived as the last few motos ran off... so mother nature did her part in kicking off the season by letting us get in an awesome day. Aaron Vincer predicated his team would deliver a great track and exciting racing, and they did just that. If you missed the opener, make sure to hit as many of the events as possible this season... the racing will keep getting better and better, and you’ll always be given a 100% effort by the Motosports Park team. Aztalan Kicks-off D16 MX in Summer like conditions Lake Mills, Wisconsin - April 9 Aztalan Cycle Club

A

s the week prior to our District 16 Motocross opener came, so did the concerns about if this event would be rained out. Weeks of rain through March and as late as the Wednesday before the event made it a legitimate concern. Then it stopped and the hard working club members did what they do best, get it done so we can come race. By Sunday morning the track was actually dry enough that water hoses came out just after practice. Aztalan dries like no where else we’ve ever been... and today saw perfect conditions. Sunshine, light wind, 70 plus degrees and a great track welcomed 350 entries for this early April race. We’ve been here when it was snowing, rainy and terribly cold. This was just the opposite and the club had everything ready to go - and it was a fantastic day. As the sun started poking through the morning clouds, the 50cc classes kicked off the day’s racing. Leaving from the main starting area, the 7-8 year old riders charged down the starting line and through turn one. Ryder Skodras just edged Jayden Adams for the lead as Nolan Simonton, Jayce Wolf, Tucker Trapp and the nine other riders followed. The Sr riders get to use the big bike start and an extended portion of the track. When they came towards the finish area to complete the first lap the order was the same, with Adams pushing Skodras hard. Back just a bit, Wolf was all over Simonton as they now had a little gap on Trapp. Lap after lap the order held as did the close racing. Right to the finish, Skodras held on

even after many pass attempts by Adams. Wolf finished by himself in third as Simonton dropped back and couldn’t finish the last lap. This opened the door for Issac Opalewski and Colton Berray to fill out the top five ahead of Adam Kruse. The second moto was a repeat performance out front as Skodras again led Adams through each lap. The two were within a few bike lengths at most right to the checkered flag as Skodras held on

After two motos of super close racing, #117 Jayden Adams and Ryder Skodras stopped to congratulate each other.

for another win. Wolf had a huge holeshot, then fell twice in the first lap. After getting that behind him, he rode well for fourth place behind Simonton. In 50Jr (4-6) the running order was set early in the first lap and never changed as everyone kept their bikes upright and progressing around the track. Waterford, WI’s Aiden Biersteker was the big winner leading Ryder Schweighardt, Devin Bares and Levi Hewitt across. Levi Gower and Dan Murray rounded out the top six. Biersteker and Schweighardt picked up where they left off in moto one, going 12 through each lap once again. Hewitt (4-3) turned it up enough this time to beat Bares (3-4) for third overall. Daniel Lopez pulled a good start in the +30B/C class to lead them into the opening laps. Jeremy Braund was in second, and looking to make a move on Lopez right away, with Brad Yde and off-road regular Benjamin Grosse close as well. The order stayed the same until the third lap where Greg Niles moved up to fourth and Braund was still pushing hard for the lead. In the last lap he carried more mo-

mentum through the sand sections out back and pulled off a pass to get around Lopez. Once there, he wasn’t about to give it up and took the win with Brad Yde holding third ahead of Niles and Grosse. Kevin Yde finished sixth, back just a little from the action. Braund was out front right away in moto two, but there was plenty changing behind him. Grosse stepped it up, running in second as Brad Yde was third ahead of Niles and Jim Beckman. As the moto went on, Niles picked his way past Yde for third and Lopez worked up to fifth. Braund was the comfortable winner while Grosse proved his skills to wrap up second overall. There was plenty of position swapping in the twelve rider Women’s class. Dana Hanna started out front with Oliva Schultz and Hartland’s Jessica Patrick all enjoying good starts. It was all changing quick though as Alexa Duclos and Bryanne Wolf were moving up. By the second lap, Duclos was leading with Wolf pushing her as they battled for the win... as they often do. Going into the sand corner in the third lap Wolf found a

little more speed and dropped Duclos back to second. At the same time Jennifer Latour was picking good lines and put her final pass on Schultz for fourth behind Hanna. Angel Ennis locked up sixth in the final lap ahead of Patrick and Brooke Chromy.

Dana Hanna finished second overall in the Women’s class, going 3-3.

Duclos and Wolf railed to the front off the start in moto two, bringing Haley Nowicki with them. Through the first two laps the three were really close. Going into the sand in the third lap, Duclos went down, and needed medical assistance... a rotten way to start the season for the young lady. Nowicki hung right with Wolf to the end, after not finishing the first moto. Wolf earned the overall after sweeping both motos. Hanna’s 3-3 was good for second overall ahead of Latour who finished the moto in fourth. The 250B class had an impressive group of quick riders and many of them seemed pretty tuned up already considering this was the first race. Seth Doeberlein picked up where he left off last season, leading the pack. As they hit the back sand corner for the first time he had plenty of company as Jake Garwood, Logan Rusk, Max Earley and Brice Hansen were super tight yet. Rusk slipped back a ways in the second lap as Hansen continued to pick up the pace, pushing his way into third to give Garwood all he could handle. Hansen’s aggression paid off as he took over second in the last lap. He closed some of the gap on Doeberlein, but not enough to cause the Fort Atkinson rider any undue stress.... this moto win was all his. Earley finished fourth, just ahead of Nicholas Czechowicz who climbed his way up from a mid pack start. to finish. Doeberlein, “It was another great moto. I led out with a good holeshot and went from there. The soil today is a sign of how much better it keeps getting here. There were nice ruts and overall it was great out there.” After Hansen’s great first moto, he settled for ninth this time as Garwood found smooth sailing in second while Rusk fought all moto to get up to third, after rounding the first turn back in seventh. Earley ran well to go 4-4 for fourth overall ahead of Brock Noreen (11-5) and Ronald Schmidt (7-6) in the moto. 250C had twenty-three riders, including a number of young guns having moved up from the smaller bikes. Standout for the day was Dalton Hein, as he swept both moto wins... but it wasn’t an easy task, and it kept the spectators’ attention for sure.

Blake Hansen went 1-1 in the 250A class!

46 www.cycleusa.com, May 2017

In the first moto, Hein made it look easy as he grabbed the holeshot and then inched away from everyone. Kyle Pratt had a great start and ran in second until the pack started to wick it up and he slid back... he had his moment out there though. Eric Zee and Easton Ruiz were first to move up, running second and third as they began the second lap with Seth Sirko and Brody Darga also on the move. Darga had his Yamaha on a roll and fought all the way up to third by the final lap, settling in a ways back from Zee, but ahead of Ruiz and Sirko. Ryan Kennedy finished sixth after some quick passes of his own. In the second moto Ruiz was leading Zee, Kennedy and Sirko early. Stuck towards the back of the pack was first moto winner Hein. Team VRM/ Southeast Sales backed Hein after the moto, “I got a nearly last place start after hitting neu-

tral off the line. It was bad. I knew it was going to be hard so I just charged and got by a lot of riders in the first lap as there were a lot of falls and bunched up guys slowing each other down. Luckily once I got more towards the front I was able to make quick passes to keep moving up. I was surprised to get to second and see the leader (Ruiz). I made the last pass on the final lap through the sand section on the outside. There’s a lot of passing out there if you just work it and keep trying.” Ruiz held on for second and third overall while Zee’s 2-3 motos was good for second overall. The 250A class came off the line on fire as expected. Following the first turn and into the faster portion of the track Blake Hansen fought his way into the lead with Dale Kathan and Jamison Duclos making it a three-way battle. At the same time, Taylor Strauss got pinched just enough in the pack to go down hard. It took a couple laps for the medics to secure and later transport the regular front runner to a local hospital. Good news is he’ll be ok, but it will be a while before we see him back at the track as he unfortunately did have some significant injuries. Justin Wolf was there when it happened and slow to restart the race as well... so he wasn’t a factor in the first moto. Out front, Duclos eventually worked into second, but the win was taken by Hansen after an impressive ride. Dale Kathan was third while Jacob Jesko finished fourth ahead of Mason Persha. Southeast Sales’ Hansen proved that his first moto win wasn’t a one time deal as he made it a perfect sweep in moto two. Wolf finished second while Jesko crossed in third for second O/A.

Aztalan always pulls good sized vet classes and these seasoned riders are not only fun on the track, but also off after the motos. They’ve figured out it is as special spending time with friends in the pits as it is trying to beat them on the track. In the first moto, Carl Hein eventually took over the lead after some bar banging with Anthony Tamborino, Johnathan Hyde and Tim Boblin. Jeff Ramsay joined the fun by mid-moto, and Tim Bares took over second. Hein won the moto with Bares, Ramsay and Tamborino edging Boblin and Glenn Korn. If you’ve been around the sport for any amount of time, you should recognize most of these riders - many of them have been racing longer than our youth riders have been walking. dust... not a problem at all, but enough to remind everyone how lucky we were to be here racing on this fantastic, dry and warm day. Free souvenirs were provided by Mother Nature - sunburns for many. Yes, mid-seventies had shorts and tshirts out and everyone got an early start on the tans of summer. The club wants to thank everyone for coming out and making it a great day. All of us that raced or spectated are already looking forward to doing it all over again in May, so come join us for all the fun!

Jordan Martz won both motos in the twenty-nine rider Open C class.

While the racing was close in the second moto as well, the end results were the same with Brad Ottenad in sixth. The Open A first moto saw Blake Hansen charge to third, putting in a great ride to get past Jason Erdmann and Brandon Marescalco. Out front, Justin Wolf put his holeshot to good use and held on for the win after a bunch of friendly pressure from his team member Josh Philbrick. Sportland2/ EVS/ TZR/ Decal Works/ Spectro Oils backed Wolf after getting the win, “I got the holeshot and pulled away for a while. My buddy Phil came at me there and we both made some mistakes but once I got some arm pump he caught me again and I just blocked his line at the end. This is a beautiful day. The track is good and you couldn’t ask for a better day to race so everything is great.” Philbrick, “I didn’t get a very good start but quickly worked my way to second behind Justin. He made a mistake, then I made one and actually went down for a moment. I caught him again and tried to get him in the last turn from the outside. It was my fault for putting my48 www.cycleusa.com, May 2017

self there and he hit me and I went down again. He was riding really well and I had to try. It’s good us pushing each other. We’re both on new and different bikes so we are both shaking everything out. I’d like to thank Sportland2, Answer, and Bell for their support as well as my parents and fiance.” Philbrick was on it in moto two. After starting behind Wolf, he made his pass in the first lap and was determined to put his new Honda across for the win. Erdmann was running third ahead of Jesko before Hansen fought his way past. Hansen had been held up in the start and was on a mission. He went after Wolf at the moto’s halfway point, then slid back after a mistake. That didn’t stop him as he came right back again. With the white flag coming out Hansen charged into the final hairpins only to stall and lose all the ground he had gained again. In the end he finished seventh, but not for a lack of effort. Wolf crossed in second behind Philbrick while Erdmann happily finished third for third overall ahead of Marescalco. The day actually ended with a little

Wanted! Are you looking to get more involved in the sport? Maybe reduce the cost of racing? Covering events may be the way to do it. If your favorite events aren’t getting coverage in the magazine, do something about it. It takes a dedicated effort, but at the same time it can be very rewarding and you’ll get to know a lot of other racers and extended family members.
