Announcements, personal stuff, and....

From the Back of the Pack By Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman I’m going in a little different direction this month with my article. As I write this I’m celebrating another landmark birthday, another decade completed. This year marks my 55th year of riding. My first ride was a 1964 Honda C 110 50cc Supersport. A kid could get a license to ride a motorcycle at 15 as long as the bike was 5 HP or less. Hard to believe we rode those little bikes all over southern MN, putting thousands of miles on them. We rode them on trails, the road and in gravel pits doing jumps before there was motocross. I spent a couple years in the military and the first thing I did when I got out was to buy a new Honda CL350. From there I went to dirt bikes. Raced my first MX in 1975 on a CanAm 175. I entered my first Enduro in 1977 on a 360 Husky at Grand Rapids. I rode Enduros and Hare Scrambles for the next 12 years. At the age of 40 I went back to MX and have been riding that combined with the occasional Hare Scrambles ever since. I started with the district in 1984 as a club rep for the Golden Eagles cycle club. This is my 19th year as the chairman of District 23. It has been an exceptional experience and an honor to be entrusted with this position. We’ve seen many changes in the past 19 years. I think the biggest change is the decreased number of young people coming into the sport. This holds for road riders as well as off road competitors. The manufacturers are aware of the numbers and putting into place programs to introduce riding to new people. There are numerous factors involved in the decrease, not the least of which is a major loss in disposable income. Environmental concerns at the forefront in the media influence potential riders. Changes within the sport itself account for some of it. We have added classes in MX and

all other disciplines to keep older riders competing and to entice new racers to join us. The clubs, promoters and district are dealing with the same monetary concerns and problems we all face, ever increasing costs. We’ve done our level best to keep all fees from increasing. We have not had any increases in the last 25 years. This is where you our members come in. We have been at our break even point since 2009. Increasing our membership is the key to maintaining our economic health. My challenge to you is for each of our members to find a new member this year. Anyone that rides a motorcycle is a potential member. We have $10 memberships for non competitors. We have Dual Sport rides, road rides, trail rides a little something for everyone. Parents of youth racers can become Associate members for the same $10, all of these memberships will help our budget. The challenge for increasing membership is on. District business is moving along. Membership numbers on par with the last season, but participation numbers are down mainly due to bad weather. We’re looking at different awards and apparel for our year-end awards. If you know of anyone that can provide these let us know or have them put a package together and present it to the board. We would like to get this done soon. That is all I have for this month, again I encourage all of you to find a new member, non competition or competition - every member helps. I’d also like to let you know that with a concerted effort and by forming a consortium of activity groups we were able to effect the bill proposed by Representative John Lesch. His bill would have led to he death of almost all youth sports. Thanks to all that wrote their legislators to help us defeat this ludicrous bill. Mike

Trials at Jeff’s Place Oregon, Illinois - May 4/5 By Douglas Hay

T

he weather was excellent both days for this WOTA (WI)/ Nitro (IL) event held on the property of Jeff Franklin. His property is beautiful with possibly the best pits in America.

Jason Waldo dominated the Champ class both days

Saturday there were eight sections for most riders. The area is hilly, wooded and most sections had at least one log crossing. The sections had arrows directing each class where to ride, so the better the rider, the tougher the section. Section three had a big log at the exit, and a few riders

crashed there, but I can tell you going over the bars on a trials bike is much better than a motocross bike! Section four was in a creek and the riders had to go through some mud, up a short hill and then over an elevated log with no bark, and mud all over the face of the log. If it wasn’t for this section I wouldn’t have had to wash my bike when I got home. A few sections had split entrances, the Novice and Intermediate classes were one entrance, and the tougher Advanced, Expert and Championship classes used the other. This made the day go smoother as there were less backups of riders waiting to ride. Section ten was the most difficult. The riders snaked through some trees on a downhill and there were two different rocks that kept shifting positions. They completely blocked the line and Advanced rider Kyle Hach said, “I took one for the team and sent that rock down the hill.” Unfortunately that cost him some points. The best rider in the top class was Illinois’ Jason Waldo riding a Sherco. He had 30 points while second place had 69. Waldo is the current East Coast National Champion in the Expert Sportsman class. Greg Sassi and Will Check battled for second with Sassi beating Check by a single point. Luke Littlefield, also from Illinois on a Sherco, won Expert with 39 points with Tony Damhoff 26 points behind, and Gary Gardner took the final spot on the podium. Jamison Stachel moved up to Expert for 2019 and he finished fourth. The Advanced class was won by Doug Hay. Kyle Hach had the lead but Hay had a nice third loop gaining four points on him. Jake Walker rounded out the podium. All three riders were on Shercos. The Intermediate class was the largest class with seventeen riders. Mark Misek won with scores of 93-4, 16 total. Fred Sassi was just three points back, and Tim Freed another two back. Misek, Sassi and Myles Saigh all had one three point loop, the best of the day. CYCLE USA, June 2019

5

Novice had six riders, with Kevan Ingold taking a one point win over Ben Ezell (15 to 16). Last year’s WI champion Eli Proctor had loop scores of 2-11-5. Not sure what happened on that second loop. Ivan Misek won the Youth class ahead of Veronica Misek and Miryan Walker. Veronica had a four point loop, the best of anyone in the class. Gretchen Orme won the Women’s class like she often does. Debbie Walker finished second. In the Senior class, Ralph Littlefield and Mike McConaughy tied with 45 points. The tie breaker was the number of sections where a rider had a perfect score of zero, and Littlefield had two more, so he took home the win. The Vintage class was won by Tom Littlefield with eight points. Sunday was actually perfect weather, in the upper 70’s. A lot of riders said they had issues with cramping. Sunday’s sections were definitely a little easier, which is great since some of us were still sore and tired from Saturday. Jeff Franklin was a gracious host. We all love the extra effort put into this event; extra signage, different colored section plates for each day, excellent awards, a perfect riding area and so many other little things that make this event special. Quite a few of the trials riders used to race motocross. If you are looking to have fun and hang out with a great group of people, come to a trials and see what it’s all about. Bring your riding gear, people are always glad to let others try their bikes.

Chasen Orme rides over the wet, muddy log on Saturday.

Fox Valley OR Double Header Gran Prix - Hare Scrambles weekend shows Mother Nature riders still come out to have fun in the mud Wedron, Illinois - May 19 Photos by Nick Smith

O

ne look up, out and in the distance everyone knew it was raining. As the first of five double header weekends kicked off at FVOR, the question was will it cancel? Gran Prix racing has in this area been a supplemental race, sort of second fiddle to other off-road events. This year something has changed. The first GP at Chandlerville it was raining, they raced and it went well. At Tri City, they had double their normal racers and it was wet, but the event rocked. The stage is set. Fox Valley either had to step up or lose that sacred momentum of the series. All the talk was "run it" and that is exactly what happened. With that came the largest group of riders to hit a GP at FVOR ever, even more then last years dual sanctioned D16/17 event. The rain was coming, but the morning was filled with sounds of laughter and dirt bikes. Blake Ryan returned to the A class being the 2018 champion in D17, and showed the boys how to ride the conditions presented.

Thor Rick kept him honest for three of the five laps. Branden Housenga got by later in the moto dropping Rick to third. Garrett Ward tried an inside line found himself a nice angled log under the leaves and was on he ground. He remounted outside the top ten to be pushing Thor at the end of the moto. Thor and Ward have raced together since 50's and Thor said "I seen him coming and I had to step it up to keep him behind." Fourteen riders in the class made for some great racing. Ryan Moss, Jarred Hall, Ryan Smith, Travis Ward, Anthony Biagi, the class was packed with talent. 12-29C was twenty strong as well. Today Ashton Lyons with his years of riding at the park showed controlled the class. Ben Meyer kept his honest specially since the Women's champion from 2018 Morgan Wheelwright was in the top three and not backing down. Hunter Davis came over from the moto world to give GP a try and actually led at one point till he found that gravity at the wrong time can slow ones progress. Tyler Antle kept his kaw upright and held on for fourth ahead of Davis.

Miro Tuska stepped up to the 40A class in 2019 and waiting for him was Eric Wheelwright to defend his class championship. Tuska and Wheelwright battled. Having forty-eight riders on the course made for some congested passing, but once clear of the crowd they put in solid laps. Last moto of the shortened day was also the largest of the day, +50B/C had twenty riders with another eight in +50A. Where do you see 28 +50 riders now days? It was clear the enduro crowd showed up to do battle today, rain? Enduro racers have a saying, "no bad weather just wrong clothes"... they kicked heine today. Stacey Stewart from Southern IL was the unknown factor, showing all the old fellows around on his vintage 250 Honda. Mark Kirking made his statement in second place. Paul Fabrizius and his KTM slid around in third and Dj Ryan, actually raced today. He got that old tired ride of his moving and tall seat and all. This was the last moto of the day, as that ornery old hag called mother nature decided everyone are just having too much fun... It

One of the many +40A class battles

poured, not a little, but a bunch. Tired, worn out in a twenty minute moto in the pouring rain... not one said "was it worth it" nothing but smiles, laughing about the excursions. You see racing like this is what it's all about. Not who won, but the fact a bunch of old guys got to race their dirt bikes and in this race it wasn't "normal" but it was tough, it was fun. Kevin Lee caught half the A class and made his way to the checkers with the win, Dean Davidson and Time Lethcoe pushed through as well to round out the podium. Sunday was the Hare Scrambles portion of the weekend. Many of the guys who got muddy and went home decided they had enough "fun" for one weekend... What they didn't know is how fast the park dries when it's warm, sunny and windy. The hard part of Hare Scrambles is race order, since it's set there is not much if any variation. So the youngest and least experienced riders are put out on the course first. 9am Super mini, 85's, 65's and Women charge off to the west side of the property, trails which are not used or abused by a day of GP racing. Pretty easy going til they get to the uphill. Multiple helpers were ready, as not one kid made the hill on their first try. What was excellent to see, second lap through only two riders needed help and after that lap no one did. Ayden White took his Kaw from start to finish in first place with Regan Doerr keeping it close early. Jake Hasten kept all honest back two minutes at the end. The morning class riders rocked as they improved all morning. 65cc beginner and 50cc courses are separate from the big course which gives the

guys a chance to change things up so they could make it around. First off was the 65's and they handled the wet and shorter course well. The 65’s made just enough ruts so the 50's would struggle most of the morning. There was some true first timers that were met with some brutal conditions. Many helped to get them around the course. First place rider Owen Gomez actually put in seven laps but the rest of the field were five or less. Kayten Toal and Weston Sticha were two Jr riders who finished five and four and laps in thirty minutes. The +30B class has history, rivalry and a funny guy all wrapped into some real shenanigans which always keep it lively. Jeff "hollywood" Nelson (his proclamation not this story tellers') jumped out to an early lead with Dave Emmons, Derek Piecha, and Peter Kavsky behind. These guys have played this racing game for a while are still good friends and competitive as ever. 1.5 hours later, Kavsky wins, but is only thirteen seconds ahead of "hollywood" and twenty or so ahead of Emmons and Piecha. No closer racing would be had this weekend and after that much time and how challenging the conditions

were it was a battle they will remember. Tanner Whipple was on his game. Jarred Hall who moved up to AA class this year kept Whip about a minute out as he charged and could gain a little, but it was never enough. His Hall's Gas Gas was working well and these conditions suit last year’s ISDE finisher but Whipple has been on his game this spring and grabbed the win. Garret Ward and Jordan Emmons traded positions for over an hour in the A class. Emmons somewhere in the later laps started making little mistakes letting Ward gain enough of a lead to keep it til the end. Nick Balzer tumbled on the first lap after leading the class through the barrels. A week later they finally found his headlight assembly buried under six inches of muck. He stayed

AA rider Tanner Whipple out front, staying clean and going for the day’s win. CYCLE USA, June 2019

on two wheels the rest of the race for third. Conditions improved a bunch as the day progressed, once it was time for the Atv races to hit the trail it was rutted but pretty tacky. Best course of the day waited for them. Carter Holder being the "pup" in the class was the fastest one this day. He finished with a three plus minute lead over Bret Daehler and Chris Breitwieser. Hats off to all the riders who braved the conditions this weekend. Fox Valley will host another two-day event over Father's day weekend so mark your calendars. Dual District Season Opener New Richmond, Wisconsin - April 27/28 By Tim McBride

T

he Shadow Valley Drifters played host to the first two rounds of the 2019 Flat track season where Jacob Walter made a clean sweep of the pro divisions. The Dual District event drew a large contingency of competitors from Minnesota, Wisconsin, North and South Dakota and even as far away as Iowa. Walter, a second year pro in the AFT Pro Singles from Amery, WI got off to a shaky start on the weekend as he had a rough out-

ing during Friday’s practice day. He rebounded nicely on Saturday and Sunday by winning all four pro main events (two each day) against some tough competition. “I started off going down three times during Friday practice and was kind of scraped up and bummed,” explained Walter. “We showed up on Saturday and got a holeshot in the first main and got the win. I was behind (William) Cato the whole race looking for an opening, and made the pass on the outside of 3 and 4 for the win. On Sunday we put on a different rear tire and I charged all day.”

Walter, a University of Wisconsin Stout student majoring in Industrial design, is planning on racing most of the east coast AFT Pro Singles Nationals this season. Another big winner on Saturday was Jack Klein who came all the way from Waterloo Iowa to compete in the bi-annual event. Klein topped the highly populated +50 class as well as +40. So far the double district events continue to grow in popularity and have been a testing grounds for riders to see how they stack up against competition other than their local competitors.

The Open A class on Saturday was won by #157 Ethan Rosine with #20 Emmett Sund and #25 Colton Vanderzande finishing 2nd and 3rd.

#52 Kyle Dahl, #111 Connor Strand and #143 Cloie Jellis finished 1-2-3 in the Open B class on Saturday. CYCLE USA, June 2019

egacross has run two events this season with the original opener being of all things, snowed out. Mother nature also threatened these rounds. This Saturday of the long holiday weekend, the Megacross crew was putting down water, the kind that comes from the water wagon as the rain fortunately missed us. It used to be all Tommy Hofmaster, but today it was Rylen. Yes, the young “Hofmaster” speedster is taking over the role of winning. Rylen dominated the 50cc 4-8 and Jr classes. Holeshot to checkers he controlled his Cobra like dad instructs and you can see he has a good coach. Wyatt Johnson and Caven Lapier kept him honest... but this was Rylen’s day. Of course when speaking of Hofmaster all know that the Mxstuff4U owner and past Arenacross pro makes his mark every time he shows up to race. Setting the example as he has at Megacross for decades, he went out and put in solid laps to win +30A and 250A. In Open A Jonathan Six wasn't going to let his holeshot go without a fight. Hofmaster pushed for most of the moto but as the race wore on he lost some ground and Six keep his wheels under him for the win. Rounding out the podium was Gavin Sienkiewicz, who stepped up to A class this season. He surprised everyone getting on

night. Deaken put in a solid ride on his #55 Ktm keeping Bentley Immormino at bay. Nick Holder pushed his #44 Kaw to the front of the twenty-two rider Open C class with Justin Heyde ahead of Joe Quest who snuck into the top three with a patented inside line through the first corner. Jack Sparks was lurking in that hunt as they put in the first laps. Quest was focused and pounding on Holder right away. In the third lap Holder made a mistake and Quest pounced. Sparks makes an inside line pass on Trevor Callear, then again on Dan Mormino. Seems like he has practiced that a time or two? Then he pulled in behind Heyde as the moto ended. Quest took his first win of 2019 and it looks like the C class has some very ready riders and good battles on the way. The 125cc class doesn't need a "national" to be cool, it happens right here at Megacross. Tonight was a treat with a great battle between Gavin Sienkiewicz and Hunter Billingsley. First moto Billingsley on a brand new ktm 125 holeshots with Jayson Crawford, Garrett Ward, and Connor Pilon packing the corners in the first laps. Moving to the Main event, Sienkiewicz pulled the holeshot with Billingsley glued to his rear wheel. Second corner transition to the whoops is a wall jump, Ward hits it too hard, scrub and bam to the ground. Five laps of trying all kinds of lines but Billingsley just couldn't get around Sienkiewicz. They rode extremely hard, like they have since they were on 65's and had a great race. Noteable mention tonight, Grant Robinson, Braden Immormino, and Austin Gerht all hammered some great laps in the 65cc Beginner class. Robinson is liking his new Yamaha and it shows how well he has adapted to it after a winter of indoor practice. Landon Lee won the 913 class but didn't have the speed in the 85Sr class for Ayden Oppenlander who won convincingly. Don't forget every race the new Answer/ Tucker Powersports sponsor of Megacross announces a class to which that class winner receives gear for their accomplishments! This happens at all the Megacross events!

Rylen Hofmaster took the night’s 50cc 4-8 win.

60 Years of Racing Rapid Angels Motorcycle Club celebrates a milestone season! Dyracuse, Wisconsin - April 28 By Doug Forstner Photos by Kaila Forstner

S

ixty years is a long time. Think about it... in 1959, President Dwight Eisenhower signed a bill to grant statehood to Hawaii. That is also the year that the Rapid Angels Motorcycle Club was formed. When those founding members were sitting around a table did they think sixty years later members would still be putting on motorcycle events? I highly doubt it but we sure are glad that they are! The club is still very strong and puts on several events each year at the Dyracuse Recreational Facility in the Town of Rome which includes motocross, hare scrambles, GP’s and hillclimbs. This year cold but sunny skies greeted everyone who entered the gate Sunday morning. My buddy who brought his 1984 Honda CR500 to race was up early making sure he had the biggest jet in for the 28 de-

For the anniversary race, the Rapid Angels brought back the “historic sand uphill” - one of the most difficult obstacles in District 16 mx history. The sand uphill was a staple of the track’s mystique for decades. It starts right out of a deep downhill sand corner with no run at the climb for momentum. As the day wears on the sand gets deeper and deeper making it Kohls finished ninth overall crucial to get a good run Kyle in the thirty rider 250C class

The Rapid Angels and the Town of Rome spent two whole days hauling and pushing sand to the top of the mountain to recreate the old track feature. +25B/C had twenty-one racers up taking on the day’s challenging sand circuit. Clayton Vonmoos was back racing moto after a few years of short track racing and he put his Yamaha on top of the box in moto one. He was chased by Nick Kubowski and Nick Czechowicz for most of the moto as they rounded out the top three. Aaron Sirko made the trek from Iowa and was fourth ahead of Jacob Hall. In moto two, again Vonmoos was steady and took his steed to the win. Czechowicz got ahead of Kubowski for second at the checkers in the moto and overall. Lukas Erdmann was sixth in moto one but finished third in moto two. Kubowski held onto to fourth place which was good enough for third overall ahead of Erdmann. Hall took sixth in the moto for fifth overall. +25A saw Bryce Backaus out front in both motos. Josh Philbrick gave him a run in moto one. Kyle Hameister was third followed by Dylan Narel and Colton Karl. In moto two, Backaus took the win as Hameister found himself in the runner-up spot followed by Narel. Cody Wills made a last lap pass and took home fourth in the moto and

matter if you are battling for the win or 30th place, give it your all. It is way more fun to watch when there are multiple battles on the track at the same time. In moto one, I watched Luke Vanlyssel, Kyle Kohls and Dustin Erickson battle over eighth place and it was such a good race that I could hardly watch the battle Anthony Dombrowski, Dominick Gaylord and Tom Gedemer further back. Out front Elijah Tetzlaff was followed Kayleb Pilman. Hayden Zurn and Tyler Schubert were battling over third and Kendra Randrup ran a lonely but solid fifth place. Moto two again saw battles everywhere but the same held true for Tetzlaff out front. Dylan Knoch greatly improved on his seventh in moto one and

brought home second place to give him third overall. Pilman rode great and his 23 scores were solid for second overall. Randrup moved up a position and her 5-4 gave her fourth overall ahead of Judea Youngthunder. With the great weather this year, it allowed the 65cc class to be able to ride the big track minus a few of the uphill sections. Moto one saw Jayce Wolf take the win over Chad Schmitt and Chase Dionne. Rounding out the top five was Ryder Skodras and Grant Neubauer out of the fourteen little rippers. Moto two had a few position changes and it was Schmitt who powered his KTM to the moto win ahead of Wolf as they flipped positions and Schmitt got the

overall. Neubauer put his new Donahue Super Sports YZ65 on the box in moto two and his 5-3 scores gave him fourth overall just behind Dionne who was solid going 34. Skodras rounded out the top five. Schoolboy was another action packed class on the day. The smells and sounds of this class are pretty much what makes motocross what it is today. To hear the buzz saw sounds of a dozen 125cc two stroke bikes ripping around in the sand is just what the doctor ordered. Moto one saw Drake Dionne on his new YZ125 use perfect lines and nice steady laps and take moto win over Josh Bowman, Justin Oehlhof, Jake Hunger and Elliot Bennett. Moto two saw everyone mixing it up again but this time Oehlhof ran away with the win and the overall. Bowman slid back a few positions and his 2-6 gave him fourth overall. Hunger moved up a spot and his 4-3 gave him the bronze. Dionne cruised in second and that was good enough for first place on the day. 125cc class is exciting to watch because we see everything from old two strokes to the new ones, young kids to old kids and everything in between. Local boy Cody Steuck took the lead early in moto one and kept command of the moto to the checkers. Josh Bowman scored second and looked real solid holding off Dionne for much of the race. Brady Schernick, new to the class, jumped right in on his refurbished YZ for fourth ahead of Luke Vanlyssel. Moto two had Justin Oehlhof who was sixth in moto one, take the lead and eventual win. His 6-1 scores gave him third overall. Steuck was steady in second for the overall ahead of Bowman 2-3. The successful weekend ended when all the riders were able to pick up the 60th anniversary plaques. Hopefully everyone realizes all the hard work to keep something going this long. The effort continues and needs our support so make sure to attend a couple of the club’s events in the future. Thank you everyone affiliated with the Rapid Angels events. Blue Skies in Mora, MN Mora, Minnesota - April 28 By Angela John Photography by Kenton Knutsen

A

nother great season of racing at Berm Benders Raceway started with blue skies and sunshine. With two bikes and an Ice Castle fish house/ travel trailer to give away to riders this season, the track was packed with racers young, old, new and veterans of the sport. Surprisingly warm weather greeted the anxious moto families and track conditions were optimal setting the stage for great racing. With a few track changes to make things more interesting, the 250C class took the gate. As it dropped racers charged towards the first corner with #84 Mitch Petrik grabbing the holeshot followed by Trey Hettich and Riley Fisher. At the first triple Fisher

had taken second while Garrett Becker catapulted himself to third. Putting pressure on the leaders through the second lap Becker continued his pursuit with Mason Grecula in tow. Hettich out front encountered difficulties when his bike stalled as he landed the triple giving Fisher the lead. As Fisher and Becker came into lap traffic the opportunity arose for Becker, but it wasn't until the final section of the track that the race was decided. Bar to bar they buzzed through the whoops. As two lines converge into one on the final corner Fisher and Becker collided. Becker kept it up, crossing the line first, Fisher second and Grecula third. Spectators gathered to watch the kid who won the 250C on a 125 as moto two began. Hettich was first to the corner with Hunter Klande getting a great started right behind

him. Becker passed them both in the new switch backs but gave it back to Hettich in the same section on the next lap. Pushing hard Grecula closed in on their battle. Grecula got his chance and seized second, now pushing Becker for first. Out cornering Becker for the pass he took the lead and with a twist of the wrist sealed the deal as he sails through the whoops. Grecula first, then Becker, and Hettich with Fisher right behind him in fourth. The overall went to Becker with an impressive pair of motos, Hettich second and Fisher third. We truly appreciate the Spring racing especially when the Winter has been long and cold. With warm smiles, cool trophies and great new memories we celebrate the beginning of another great motocross season at our home away from home - Berm Benders Raceway.

Muddy Waters MX Opener Port Byron, Illinois - May 12 By Kyleigh Mclaughlin

T

he Great River Shootout Series (GRSS) got its first official round off on May 12th hosted by Muddy Waters MX! GRSS is an eight race series within District 17 between all three of the original GRSS tracks; Muddy Waters MX, Tri-City Motorcycle Club, Galesburg Motorcycle Club, plus now Megacross. The idea behind this series is to promote local racing as well as provide riders with quality racing on tracks that are built for all skilllevel riders. The weather has played a huge part in the delay of getting the series going, having to cancel the first two rounds due to rain. Mother Nature decided to rest on Mother’s Day and finally gave us a rain-free day (for the most part). Though the forecast was calling for rain, it held off while providing Cassie and Davey Fairfield showing off their hardware at the end of a good day. a nice overcast, which led to perfect track conditions all day. Belvidere, IL’s Jaxson Schiller pushing to second place in 65cc 7-9 at a muddy Sunset Ridge MX

Sunset Ridge defies the rain Walnut, Illinois - May 18/19 Sunset Ridge MX

S

unset Ridge opened their 2019 racing season with a two day Area Qualifier. Unfortunately “rain” was a frequent issue through the weekend. The area received six inches during the week scrubbing any hopes of Friday’s practice session going off. Top it off two more inches of rain fell late Friday. While you would expect the worse after all that the Sunset crew had everything as prepped for this as possible and the track was actually pretty darn good come Saturday morning. The real

question was how long would it last - as there was a 95% chance of strong storms forecast for a 1pm arrival. They came early. Practice went as planned and the first motos delivered some excellent racing under partly sunny skies as temps climbed into the upper 70s. The 85cc 10-12 Limited class was a perfect example of how diverse the crowd was. Sixteen entries representing eight states, and one of the top contenders wasn’t here with any concerns about qualifying... he was just looking to race. Illinois’ Ayden Oppenlander had a great jump off the line and led the very fast field into turn one.

WI’s Hayden Zurn used a positive attitude to pull down a couple great 250C class finishes.

Half a lap later he was still leading with a lot of pressure coming from Georgia’s Codee Samples. Wisconsin’s Ayden Price was fifth with Hunter Savage (IL) sixth and Yamaha star Kade Johnson (TX) on rails back in seventh after a really bad start. By the third lap everything had changed as Samples was out front and in a real fight with Johnson who climbed past all those riders. Price was up to third and Oppenlander was back several spots trying to make up for an off lap. After some really impressive back and forth Johnson took over on the last lap and grabbed the win. Price took advantage of a Samples mistake to lock in second. Price was the only rider in the class not paying the $10 qualifying fee, something a lot of riders don’t realize you can “pass” on doing. Oppenlander worked back up to sixth ahead of Savage. Oppenlander after the moto, “I tried the inside knowing the outside would be soft yet and it worked for a good start. The track was good but rough. I held on as long as I could but slipped back a little in the middle laps and then pushed to get back up. It was a good race on a tough track.” 250B Limited also had riders from eight states. Cool thing about this class is you’ll see some really fast regular B riders mix it up with some of those that sit back, hide all season in an effort not to get advanced as they hope to sneak into the national. Today it was won by a fast local rider... one that races all the time as well as having hopes for a bright national performance. Wisconsin’s Eddie Norred is well known in the area and he simply left everyone behind today. He had a good nine to ten second lead half way through the opening lap that just grew from there. None of the out of the area riders behind him kept pace. This was race five of the day and the track was looking really good but, you could see the storms coming, hours before they were expected. The rain began mid moto and kept getting heavier as the race went on. Rock River Powersports/ Sportland2/ Pro Taper/ UFO backed Norred after the big win, “I didn’t get CYCLE USA, June 2019

Minnesota’s Kai Morgan took on the conditions to finish third in 65cc 7-9 Limited.

the best jump but tucked in tight in the first corner and tried getting around everyone. I worked to keep it steady and not crash once the rain started. I know the rest of the day is going to be muddy so I wanted to get it in my head to ride well. The track was good but as the rain started it changed quick. It isn’t bad yet, but it will be. If I may, I’d like to thank my mom and dad for getting me to the races every weekend.” This was the last moto for a while as lightning forced about an hour long break in the action. When the rain slowed, Bob Pistole went on the track with a monster dozer doing everything possible to scrape water and mud off. The decision was made to run a single moto - disappointing no one. With all the rain that fell most facilties would have been terrible. This was bad - but raceable and some of the skilled riders really showed their talent through the rest of the sloppy day. Attitude seemed to play in huge. The riders that took it in stride simply did better and still enjoyed it. When racing resumed, 250C Limited was first out. Brandon Martyniak (WI) climbed his way into the lead pack by the second lap as Elijah Tetzlaff (WI) worked into second. Williams Motor Works/ Fly/ WPS/ Rock River backed Tetzlaff after the moto, “It is really sloppy and it takes a lot of patience to get around and stay

up. With all the water it’s hard to see the ruts but many of the lines are still there, you just don’t always know where they will take you. I stayed behind those guys for a while just seeing what would happen and made passes as I could to get the win.” Martyniak finished third behind Michigan’s Samuel Fish. Hayden Zurn and Cole Godfrey rounded out the top five (both also from WI) in the twenty-two rider class. Precision Floors & Decor/ Sportland2 rider Zurn after working up all moto, “The track was deep... big ruts that were there but you couldn’t see them. It didn’t seem that muddy but following the lines was tough. Staying on the track and hitting lines helped me move up a lot.”

The rest of the day was more of the same... some in survival mode to just get through it for a qualifying spot, others treating it like a real test to improve and make a point. Sunday had the ‘rain” word used far less as they got in both motos and a few local riders showed off their speed against those traveling from all across the country. All in all a quick scan through the results showed riders from twenty states plus Canada in attendance. It was a challenging weekend - but pulled off well by the Sunset Ridge MX crew in a manner that few others could do. Congrats to them for making it happen! Look for the next big motorcycle/ATV combined weekend to arrive here July 27/ 28 as the Racer-X vet series and new Power Series combine for what will be a great weekend.

Bob Pistole moved a lot of mud between motos.

Motosports Park Motocross Days of rain end just in time to allow great conditions for Nuclear-Sunset Power Series Round #2

Conditions were perfect for some really good racing. Part of the 250C class off the start.

Byron, Illinois - May 5 By Mariska Minkus

T

he early morning temps were brisk with the welcoming sun shining upon Byron’s Motosports Park. Aaron Vincer was out early tilling the track and getting it prepped for another great day of racing. Despite all the rain from the previous days, the soil was loamy and ready to produce some great ruts. And as the fifty years of racing history continues so does the number of famous riders that have ridden this track. With Chase Sexton winning the 2019 AMA Supercross 250SX East title the night before, he now joins the ranks of Champions such as Gary Bailey, Jeff Stanton, Junior Jackson, Mark Barnett and a host of others that have raced here. Motosports Park is hosting the Youth Regional this year, and the riders have been making a point of being here for practice and race days, with camp sites being filled every weekend. With the track prepped and bikes on the line, the riders were ready to get out and check the conditions along with the new layout that Aaron had mentioned at the riders’ meeting. As the practice sessions fin-

ished up, multiple lines were already developing and the dirt had good moisture worked in along with the new layer of wood chips making for some deep ruts, and the braking bumps were going to be a challenge for every rider. Racing was as exciting as the track and the top two positions were pretty consistent across the majority of the classes throughout the day. The real battles were being fought in the trenchs behind the leaders. In the 125cc class it was the brothers, Garrett & Travis Ward dicing both motos. Both holeshots went to Mitchell Malaney (Wi) as he pulled a pretty good gap on the rest of the group. In the first moto it was Brody Chyma (IA) second with Garrett

Ward edging out third ahead of his brother. As the gates dropped on the second moto it was Garrett edging out ahead of Chyma and Travis. It took Travis a couple of laps to catch Garrett and then the battle was on be-

tween the brothers with Garrett defending his position. It was Malaney (1-1) with the overall, Garrett Ward (3-2) securing second, Chyma (2-4) for third and Travis Ward (43) finishing in fourth for the day. Garrett Ward had this to say, “we both love racing each other. We had a few lappers in the way that almost cost me my second place position. It was a fun race as always.” In the 250B class it was Eddie Norred Jr (WI) that dominated with the holeshot and ran ahead of the rest of the pack with consistently fast laps. Running in second was Ryder Schnowske on his KTM, but the battles for the next positions had riders challenging each other and defending lines around the rough track. In the first moto it was Nick Wuertzer (IA) running in third with Zack Jurgensen pushing to find a place to make the pass. Throughout the moto Jurgensen and Wuertzer kept going back and forth with each other. At the checkered flag it was Wuertzer defending with Jurgensen right behind. The second moto was a different story for Jurgensen who was in fourth with Chase Boykin ahead of him. Wuertzer was having trouble this moto, having slid out a few times and loosing positions. By the final lap it was Norred (1-1) with a very solid first place finish, Ryder Schnowske (2-2) and Jurgensen (4-4) for third overall. Wuertzer after the race, “it felt okay being my first race back from my injury, arm pump was a huge problem. I had some fun battles with Zach Jurgensen.” With the 65Jr (7-9) and the 65Sr (10-11) on the gate together it looked like a scene from KTM Supercross challenge with the all the orange on the line. Even with separate gate drops, by the second lap they were all mixing it up together. In 65Sr it was a consistent group out front in both 36

motos. Preston Zollers (1-1), Nathan Bierbom (2-2) followed by Cayden Leidigh (IA) (3-3) and rounding up the top four was Lucas Yerington (IA) (4-4). In 65JR there was some jockeying around with passes being made. The first moto Noxx Lewin (IA) was running up front with Landon Whitney hot on his rear fender, trying to get the pass. Whitney just wasn’t able to make the pass and Lewin won the moto. Jaxson Schiller finished right there in third. In the second moto we saw Lewin once again leading with Whitney running in second under a lot of pressure from Schiller. They went back and forth throughout the race before Whitney crashed and Schiller being so close ran into him.

They both got back up with Schiller crossing the finish line ahead of Whitney. Whitney, “the second moto was hard. I was tired from racing the night before but still had a good battle with Schiller. Byron is my favorite track. It was fun but really rough and the breaking bumps were huge, so were the ruts.” Who doesn’t enjoy a great day of racing? And this day was no exception with fast riders really putting the pressure on for those top spots. The track conditions proved diverse and challenging just as they should. Motosports Park once again has proven why they’ve been in business all these years. And as the Nuclear-Sunset Power Series has concluded at MSP, the last two

SX at Lake County Fairgrounds Kicks-off 2019 Season Lake County, Illinois - May 4 Jenneration MX

R

egular racing in Grayslake, IL - at the Lake County fairgrounds has moved to Saturnday nights. Thanks to the ongoing efforts by Kurt Jennison and his Jenneration MX team, riders of the area can count on a shot at eight events this season, including the mid-week fair races in July. Running events in early May is always a crap shoot - this year in particular with the record setting rains and overall wet weather. Several inches of rain during the week just meant a lot more work for the track crew as they committed themselves to holding their

opener on May 4th, when the rain finally subsided for a moment. Getting this race off was as much a matter of commitment as anything. All the water would have caused many to toss in the towel... but with hard work, they got it done. It wasn’t easy and the track quickly developed deep ruts and became very challenging through the heat races. Then the equipment came back out during an extended intermission... everything was smoothed over and re-prepped. It worked and the mains saw some good racing because of it. Action started right away in the 250B class. Kenosha, WI’s Dylan Mierzejewski cut under everyone in the first turn to take

Essex, IL’s Emily Smith charged to the Women’s class win.

the early lead with Trevor Nelson and Nick Czechawicz side by side fighting over second. As they began the second lap Nelson bobbled just a little, but it cost him a couple spots in the tight pack. Mierzejewski was now solid out front and pulling away as Dustin Sikorski caught momentum and charged into second ahead of Czechawicz and Nelson. The final laps slipped by without any more position changes and Mierzejewski took his win handily. The top three riders were all out of Southern WI. Mierzejewski, “The track is good and I just got out front and kept it fun. Leading all the way is always good. They did a lot of work at half time to cut down the ruts and the track is really good right now.”

Lukas Cobian went to third in Open A.

The Illinois crowd came out swinging in the 250C class... filling the top four spots. St Charles, IL’s Jack Sparks set the tone early in the heat race by putting in a dominating ride - then returned in the main to pull a repeat. Sparks after the main, “I got a really good start and once I was out front I tried to hold everyone off and stay consistent through the moto. I was really glad to see the track dry out the way it did. With the grading it is smooth now compared to before when it was much harder with all the ruts. I’d like to thank mom and dad for all their support in this!” Austin Stamm grabbed second out of the first turn and spent the early laps holding off Brandon Jackson. Late in the moto Jackson slid out and dropped back to fifth as Oscer Rodriguez and James Cerny were happy to move up and finish 3-4. During the heat races when the track was pretty soft and rutting up a lot, Nick Wallace used some finesse to make his 250A class holeshot hold up for the win. It didn’t come easily as Brandon Pope was riding really hard behind him. Maybe too hard for the conditions... but it was just a heat race and the point was made that a battle for the win was a coming. In the main Wallace grabbed a holeshot as Pope quickly got around Gavin Sienkiewicz, into second. From there it was up to Pope to force a pass on the tight track. Pope after the race,

“I tried to ride smooth and be patient through the night. They dialed the track in at half time so it was pretty tacky and fun.

I managed to use an outside line as Nick made a mistake and passed into the lead over one of the infield doubles. Then I rode on for the win. I haven’t ridden in six months and it feels good to come out to the opener and show everyone I’m still here.” Pope grabbed the season opening win but Wallace sure looks poised to make it interesting as the season rolls on. Sienkiewicz held on for third ahead of Kyler Hyde. Jenneration MX/ Sharknation/ Woodstock KTM/ Parts Unlimited backed Kain Jennison made up for a rough heat race by leading every lap of the 65Sr class ahead of Bryce Arnold. Jennison, “The race went good. It was smooth and I stayed clean and kept it on two wheels all moto. It was a perfect moto. It started with the holeshot and then I just left it all out there.” Aiden Biersteker of Wind Lake WI took the 65Jr heat race win ahead of Landon Whitney (Woodstock, IL) and Matthew Alshouse. The same three jumped to the front in the main but this time it was Whitney with the best start. Biersteker made a few runs at Whitney to no avail and they finished in that order ahead of Alshouse. Nolan Simonton grabbed fourth with Chase Beake back just a couple bike lengths. Ten riders left the line in the night’s 85Sr main with Deegan Cooley being the quick-

est into turn one. Cooley has been showing his speed for years as he steps up in classes and tonight he continued that, leading every lap. Marshall Sellak and Bodie Roth had good starts ahead of Tyler Holden and Ethan Abraham. By the second lap it was

all changing as Tanner Rossi was moving up on his Kawasaki. Lap three saw Rossi all the way up into second as Abraham also advance into third after getting away from Holden. Cooley grabbed the win ahead of Rossi and the others in one of the best races

of the night. Woodstock KTM/ 100%/ Aplinestar rider Cooley, “I’ve been riding like twice a week to get ready for the season and it was fun to race this first race here. I should be here all season.” Lincoln Paxton put in solid laps to win PeeWee Open on his Cobra ahead of Cole Johler. As those two led, Emmett Baker spent most of the moto trying to find a way around the tough Serenity Salas. A last lap pass put him into third as Blake Beatka grabbed fifth ahead of Cooper Holland and Jaxon Zimmerman. Following some of the night’s youngest riders, the +30B crowd came out and North Prairie, WI’s Jason Haessig made it a clean sweep. Haessig, “I got the holeshot in the heat race and won that and then grabbed another in this main. The track is all different and with the early season rains it was super rutted and not at all like a typical stadium race. They knocked a lot of that down between motos and it is pretty good now for sure. I’ve been racing these for a while and plan on being here all season again. I would like to thank Tom at Sportland2 for all his help and support as well as my fiancé that’s always here with me.” Behind Haessig, Michael Senft quickly pushed into second ahead of Rob Feller. Jason Edgerton had a bad start but was on the move. By the third lap he had worked up to fourth. On the last lap he managed to slip by Feller for third as Derek Hauger rounded out the top five.

Nothing about tonight’s race came easy for the Jenneration MX track team - but it got done, and was a successful start to the new season! They proved it can be done and that was huge. Spring Creek Opening Day Millville, Minnesota - May 5 By Rolfe Otterness

ack Williams really ripped up the terra firma all around the track enroute to wins in the 14-24A and Open A classes, as the 2019 season at last became a reality. Williams had some battles on his way to these victories as there was some quick competitors sharing the real estate with him, but he ran in for 1-1 and 1-3 scores for the overalls, respectively. Bryce Backaus and Justin Craft were both especially effective in giving him some pressure. A host of other riders were on hand to enjoy the opening day of the season too as entries totaled over 600. The track was in pretty good condition too, as the wet weather pattern had a temporary break just long enough to get the surface dried and prepared for this round of the Super Series. One note of reflection… there was a pause in the race action for a memorial lap in honor of long time club member Brian Stewart who succumbed to cancer last winter. Brian was a fixture at the track for many years and will be missed. In the aforementioned Open A class, the moto one holeshot went to Phil Maus as he blasted turn one on his Katoom. Maus led lap

one with Craft and Austin Kienast in his wake. Craft was soon around Maus to lead the rest of the way to the checkered and took the flag with a decent lead. Maus held onto second until the last lap when Josh Boaz and Williams pushed by, then Backaus also got around for fourth. Williams was prepared better for the start in moto two and led the field around turn one and towards the creek. Craft slipped into second and blast-from-the-past Scotty Jendro latched onto third. Williams tugged on this throttle viciously and started to edge

away a bit from Craft while Backaus successfully challenged Jendro for third. Craft slipped back a few spots as Jendro and then Jake Loberg managed to make their way by. Williams crossed the finish line with about ten seconds to spare over Backaus with the rest of the gang trailing them in shortly. Local guy Todd Miller stormed into the early lead as the 14-24C class motored off the line for their first race. Alex Ives held second for a lap or so but then Ronnie Orres displaced him and held on to trail Miller across the line a few laps later. Ives maintained third for the rest of the moto with Tyler Otterdahl and Garret Becker running 4-5. Miller shot out to the front in moto two and led all the way. Ives ran well but couldn’t quite match Miller’s pace and was down about five seconds at the flag. Close behind him ran the trio of Otterdahl, Becker and Orres at they battled the last few laps in their frenzied dash to the checkered. The 85cc 12-15 class took off for their first moto and Domenic Hegman ripped up the starting straight to grab the lead with Wyatt McGrath close behind. Hegman soon had a bit of Rob Rauner snared the +50 class win. trouble down around the

sandwash though and McGrath took over out front. Hegman recovered quickly and soon was back up to second with Tanner Schlegel and Ronnie Orres running third and fourth. One more lap and Hegman was back in control and edging away a bit from McGrath. The checkered brought the moto to an end with Hegman safely in front and McGrath solidly in second. Orres demoted Schlegel to fourth late in the moto and Cooper Abbett cruised in behind them for fifth. Hegman reprised his first-moto holeshot as they left the gate behind to start moto two. McGrath was quick to latch onto second and they ran off a bit from the rest of the pack. Once again Hegman had a bit too much speed for McGrath to deal with and he crossed the finish line with about a ten second gap for the win. McGrath was safely ahead of a Schlegel/ Orres battle which continued right up to the flag. Behind Orres, Brodie Boumeester brought his bike across for fifth.
