Lives lost way too early Racing community mourns the loss of Charlotte Kainz and Kyle McGrane

O

ur racing community is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of professional flat track riders Charlotte Kainz and Kyle McGrane, and extends heartfelt condolences to their families. Kainz and McGrane were involved in separate racing incidents during the September 25th AMA Pro Flat Track race in Santa Rosa, Calif. Emergency responders were on the scene within seconds of each incident and the riders were transported to Memorial Hospital in Santa Rosa where they succumbed to their injuries. "The flat track community is tight knit, and today we are all mourning," said Michael Lock, CEO of AMA Pro Racing. "Charlotte and Kyle were talented competitors with bright futures. Our deepest condolences go out to their families and friends in this time of need." Charlotte Kainz, 20, from West Allis, Wis. earned her professional license in Pro Flat Track in the GNC2 class during the 2015 season. The beloved rider won her

first GNC2 Semi this year at the Black Hills Half-Mile and brought smiles to the faces of everyone she met in the paddock. She grew up racing and making friends in AMA District 16 as well as neighboring

areas, at many of the local events. Kyle McGrane, 17, joined the Pro Flat Track ranks in the GNC2 class last year and showed promise both on and off the track. McGrane was born in Gap, Penn.

District 16 Annual Banquet The 2016 District 16 Banquet continues to see more and more prizes, and drawing items come in... This with the added DJ, new schedule and all should make it a fantastic weekend. You don’t have to be an award winner to attend - this is quickly becoming a big must attend D16 social event. If you haven’t ordered your tickets, get it done asap. The order form is in this issue, and also on line at www.amadistrict16.com Print Schedule change! New for the 2016 season, Cycle USA is adjusting the print schedule to help our district associations keep their cost down, and membership dues as low as possible. The November and December issues will be rolled into one combined year-end issue. The last few issues have been larger than years past, as we include more articles and photos. Actually this has been a trend all season. Our last issue of 2016, coming out late in November will be larger as well... with all the usual final events, so you miss a thing. All the same great content, just packaged into one less mailing. From the Back of the Pack Mike Quinn, D23 Chairman As we near the end of another season, it has been an exciting one for most of us. Whether you are racing for a title or a casual racer, if you are anything like me all the events were fun. Unfortunately I only got to race one Hare Scrambles but what a race it was. The other highlight for my wife and I was a motorcycle tour in Europe. This bucket list trip was the finest vacation we’ve ever had. We’ve had a few events rained out and a few that have had to be postponed due to storms. I’ve been assured that events will be back on the calendar next season. We have chosen some of the awards for year-

Announcements, personal stuff, and.... end and plan to chose the last of the awards at the October board meeting. There are some rumors out there about the awards but as of now things are not written in stone. The aim of the board is to differentiate the awards for the different level of racers. We have the Championship classes which consist primarily of the Amateur A classes. We have the Youth Champions and we the B and C class winners. As with most sports the A class racers are the best in their class followed by B and C. We are also looking at what is popular in sports wear for the different ages. We want the winners to wear the apparel often. As a sport and a district we are a best kept secret in MN. We need to get more exposure and we need to grow membership. Apparel with the D23 logo, a name and class in which you are champion is some of our best advertising. Financially we are hanging in there, basically at the break even point. With the addition of another four - five hundred members we would be in a much stronger position. This would allow us to do more for the members. Our largest expenditure each year is our year-end awards, as it should be. Recognizing racer’s achievements is one of our primary functions. Our budget committee has done a great job of keeping expenditures down. We haven’t increased our dues in over 20 years, like most organizations we’re doing more with less. Membership chairperson Angela Johns has done a good job of bringing in new and fresh ideas. She has our apparel line up and running, the link to get D 23 apparel is on the ARMCA website. She is always open to input so please look her up and give her your ideas. Lastly the tentative date for our annual business meeting and sanction meeting is Dec 17th at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Bloomington. Look for more on this meeting in mailings and on the website. I hope to see you all at the annual meeting. Mike

Nuke Series Wraps-up her all fixed up for a truly awesome race. The only rules were being riders had to be twenty one years of age, and bring a 125cc 2-stroke to the line. It was such a fun event for everyone at the track that I’m positive this is going to be an ongoing event. There was also some great pit bike buddy racing at the end of the day with a running start and tag team laps. Out of nowhere Smith tipped it over and let everyone by, putting Collins in the lead, Lorenz in second and Czechowicz third. Collins started to pull away as everyone was fighting behind him. Edward Lengwin was right in the mix and was able to take it all the way from fourth to second in one lap with Czechowicz right behind him to keep third place. Smith was charging back hard starting from the back of the pack and got up to fifth. They came across the line with Czechowicz taking the overall with his second and third place finishes. race as well. In the first moto Ty Tyrrell took the win followed by Eric Fueillerat and Justin Kelly. They took off the line in the second moto with Tyrrell jumping out front to an early lead with Kelly and Fueillerat right on his back tire. Coming over the table top Fueillerat took over second and started a long battle with Kelly that lasted several laps. Kelly got back into second through the sand rollers and was on a mission to get Tyrrell. It was an intense race with Kelly gaining, then dropping back a bit and gaining again. It came down to the last turn Kelly was right on Tyrrell coming down the hill and had to go outside for any chance to get around him. Hammering it to the line Tyrrell was able to stick the win with Kelly right behind him in second. 14-24 was a great race today with some good action. In the first moto Drew Yener-

ich was out on his 125, having not been in an official race in quite some time it was cool to see him out riding. Yenerich took the win in the first moto with Brock Shelton in second and Conner Robinson third. The second moto got underway with Colton Burk grabbing the early lead followed by Yenerich and Shelton around the first turn. Into the sweeper Yenerich pulled out front and took off from there. Burk was holding off Shelton until they hit the sand when Shelton blasted into second with Brandon Marescalco on the gas pulling right behind him into third. Heading around the sweeper Shelton went down, advancing Marescalco to second and Burk into third. Robinson was waiting in wings in fourth looking for a way to get around the traffic jam finally found an inside line on the lap to take over third. Hitting the finish line Yenerich

took the win and the overall for the day. Marescalco came across in second, but with a bad finish in the moto did not break into the top three. Robinson ended the race in third to take second overall and Shelton was able to get back to fourth after his fall to secure third overall for the day. It was great day out at Motosports Park today with the track crew working hard getting everything perfect for the day. The lack of heat helped out greatly keeping the moisture intact and great racing surface all day. It was such a fun day for everyone with the 125 Legends race having twenty-five entries and being won by Zach Coons. The awards went by smooth and the entertainment for the rest of the night made it a really great time out at Motosports Park and a great wrap to the series. he Straight Arrow Enduro Riders put in some long hours for the 47th Annual Moose Enduro held in the Nemadji State Forrest. Crews spent many weekends of back breaking work cutting and clearing all the debris from some severe storms that uprooted trees, scattering them like pick up sticks on the trails. To add insult, the clouds opened up the night before the race showering the already wet conditions making sure every hole and low spot was adequately filled with water for the riders. Fortunately, for the SAER Minnesota racers aren’t fair weather riders as they saw a good turnout for a race that was expected to be, well not the greatest of conditions to say the least. Reigning State Champion Tyler Pogreba needed some luck on his side as Nick Swenson on his Motorex/ Checkpoint/ Fly Honda CRF250 has had his number this year, and is leading points in the AA class. Pogreba on his KTM 250 put his head down and did what he needed to do by winning the race. Now, out of his hands his only hope is for other riders to get in between them or for

Swenson to have some misfortune with the muddy conditions. Swenson on the other hand wasn’t on board with this plan. Instead of playing it safe he opened up the throttle to prove his winning was no fluke. Unable to win this battle, but still taking home second Swenson has won the war. In his first season Swenson won the AA State Title and the Overall Enduro Series. Rounding out the podium was Matt Lindeberg. Matching the pace of the top two, Lindeberg actually had a chance for the win, but a mistake in check six cost him from being the star of the show. A little brotherly rivalry came out as Tim Gregory, charging to take the Super Senior B class.

Dan Banks sending riders out into the final section.

Heavy B rider Tanner Lokken was lined up with big brother Justin riding in Vet A. After a few checks Tanner pointed out that someone wasn’t keeping pace and was giving a few digs about it. Older and sometimes wiser Justin threw back, “I’m just having fun and I have to work tomorrow”. It’s like telling someone you didn’t beat me I let you win. And win is what Tanner did. Not good for Justin as this was the last Enduro and Tanner has bragging rights till next year. Tanner also hit the podium with a third in Heavy B while Justin took home fourth in the stacked Vet A class. Continued on page 13

Suter wins Hutch TT Hutchinson, Minnesota - August 13 By Tim McBride

adison Wisconsin native Rich Suter scored the win in the Pro Quad division during round nine of the Lucas Oil Midwest Extreme Dirt Track Series National Championship series held at the McCleod County fairgrounds. Over 200 entries were on hand, but heavy rains played a big factor and in effect cancelling the practice day scheduled on the previous Friday. The start time on Saturday was pushed out a few hours on as workers were forced to rebuild the race track from scratch, which looked like a muddy quagmire on race day morning. After a several hour delay in the program a very nice track surface was formed and racing was soon underway. Three Pro classes were featured and starting with the premier Pro class, it was none other than event promoter Daryl Rath leading every lap only to be penalized three positions at the end of the race for forgetting to take the required “Joker

Lane.” All riders in the three Pro divisions are required to use the alternate lane at least on time in order to give everyone a fair chance at making a clean pass.

Rath’s miscue moved Suter on to the top podium spot followed by Garrett Keister and last year’s winner Josh Hibdon. “I didn’t want to win this way,” said

Duquette, continued from page 11 Kristi Grote pulled out the KTM 105 instead of the 200. Figured if she got stuck she could just pick it up and carry it out of the woods. Getting to the first check is an eleven mile transfer on gravel and dirt roads. Upon reaching her destination Grote realized she had no rear brakes and she was dripping oil out of the cases. Due to the distance back to the pits Grote had two choices. Ride back to camp or pursue on. Not one to back down from a challenge Kristi ran the entire race with no rear brake and was topping off her oil at each gas stop. Even with all the struggles Grote managed to pull off an impressive win. It’s been reported that the 200 will be on the starting line at the next race while the 105 will be sitting in the corner thinking about the shenanigans it pulled. I wonder if that works. Impressive ride for Grote whom also won the Championship in the Women’s class. Second went to Renee Ward followed by Sara Stronczer in third. Once again a HUGE Thanks to all the

D16’s Gravity Park Raceway Chilton, Wisconsin - August 13 By Doug Forstner

W

isconsin has had its share of night racing through the years with a bunch of different fairground races being held by different promoters. But District 16 hasn’t ventured into the night scene of racing with a points race until recently when Gravity Park in Chilton, WI decided to give it a try. It is a change of pace from the normal Saturday or Sunday day racing. Racers can sleep in or even work on Saturday and still make practice which starts later in the day. As we entered the gates we saw the pits filling up fast so we knew it was going to be a good night. The other benefit with night racing is that the track holds moisture better than during the sunny hot days, so a freshly groomed track stayed ready to take on the riders. 50Jr started off the racing and I was parked next to the Ebben camp which was just back from competing at Loretta Kendra Randrup and Momma R waiting in staging for the Women’s moto.

Lynns. All I can say is that they looked excited to be back in WI, racing with no heat, humidity or rain for this race. Moto one it was Taylor Ebben who led the race to the checkers, beating Paityn Fritchen, Jaggyr Wolf, Chase Wunderlich and Jett

Wolf. Moto two though, it was Jaggyr Wolf who battled his way to the front, taking the win ahead of Ebben. Fritchen was third with Wunderlich again fourth. Ebben’s 1-2 score was still good enough for the overall, beating out Wolf’s 3-1. 50Sr was a good sized class and it was the #43 rocket of Brody Barth who took command of both motos for the overall victory ahead of the 2-2 scores of Cruz Anschutz. Carter Millette made the trip down from Escanaba MI with his family to put his KTM on the box with consistent rides, going 3-4 for third. Bryce Carlson upped his game to third place in moto two after a sixth in moto one. Garrett Lornson was pretty consistent as well with his 4-5 scores landing him fifth overall. Moto one holeshot in 250B went to Nick Randrup, but he was soon challenged by the buzz saw of a YZ125 riden by Colin Hass. Marco Gravedoni, Bailey Otis and Jonah Dowd were in a battle behind the leaders. Hass made the pass on Randrup for the lead, but Randrup gave him a run for his money to the end. Moto two was a repeat, and again Randrup was out front but conceded to Hass. Gravedoni, Otis and Dowd again went to battle in moto two with Gravedoni getting the third spot. 250C class was action packed with a pretty big gate, and it was Brock Noreen on his Yamaha who got out front in moto one, then leading to the checkers. Scott Fifarek ran solid and took home the sec-

ond spot beating out a pair of riders from Plover WI, Jacob Pilman and Nick Jacobson. Gabe Rasmussen rounded out the top five on his new KTM. Moto two again saw Noreen take hold of the lead, giving him the 1-1 for the overall. Pilman lit the fire in his bike and took home a hard fought second in the moto giving him second overall, beating out the 2-3 of Fifarek. Jacobson was solid again in fourth and Hayden Zurn took home fifth in the moto and fifth overall, swapping with Rasmussen. Double class winners on the night were Jake Vaness winning both A classes. Brody Barth also took home the Mini Open win besides his win in 50Sr. In addition to winning 250C, Noreen also took home a first place in Open C. Ryder Beth won both Mini Jr classes. Beautiful night at Woodstock Woodstock, Illinois - August 26 Woodstock MX

A

s the season winds down, you come to really appreciate an evening race where temps are just right. Warm enough for comfort, dry, no humidity... one of those really nice “almost” fall evenings that simply don’t come around often enough. Tonight delivered just that, plus plenty of fun and close racing. The evening started off with the 250B class riders mixing it up. Jacob Lorenz won the heat race, but then in the main suffered a bad start and just couldn’t repeat his pace. Out front, Rj Mackenzie was on the gas through the first lap with Maximillian Richter about two bike lengths back. Part way into the second lap, Mackenzie stuffed his front wheel in the sand corner, going down and falling to the rear of the pack. Richter took over out front, now with a motivated Chad West in second. West kept it close as the white flag came out. Through the lap you could feel the interest he had in making a move. As they went into the final corners here it came... the typical block pass you see so often in stadium racing, and it worked as West got the win on his Yamaha. Richter held on for second as Blake Bauer finished third ahead of Lorenz. Woodstock KTM’s Erik Utech left nothing to chance in the +25 class, topping the field in the heat race, then grabbing the holeshot in the main. Cody Richter quickly slid into second ahead of Ryan Rochwite. The three held pace until the end, with Utech scoring the win. Preston Zollers had Riley Busse all over his 16

rear fender in the second half of the 50Sr heat race, setting the stage for some more close racing later in the main. As the eleven riders game off the gate in the main, Zollers timed it perfectly, jumping out front. Busse had his chance, running close through the early laps. Then Zollers opened it up a bit, pulling away some for the win. It was a good show as Nate Bierbom ran in third. Three laps in, Jayden Wolf made his way around Brody Brewer for fourth. Larry Bank took a shot at upsetting James Rossi in the +40 main. Rossi won the heat race, but came out of turn two in second place behind a determined Bank in the start of the final. Bank dug deep, and held Rossi back for two laps. As they started lap three, Rossi made a good move to take over. Suzuki mounted James Wehrman was running third all the way ahead of Lonnie Urban. Bank

fought hard to come back after the lead spot, but settled for second, still with a big smile on his face as he came off the track. The 65Sr class saw the top riders go 12-3 right off the start and stay that way. Woodstock KTM/ 100%/ Sano/ Thor backed Deegan Cooley took the win, “It was good out there, and went pretty well. I almost fell one time going into the whoops by the spectators. The track is nice. I have all the jumps down and that’s a lot of fun.” Behind Cooley, more regulars filled the podium as Talan Zollers rode to second ahead of Max Williams. Bobby Stitt and Nathan Bills rounded out the top five, all KTM mounted. Ayden Oppenlander continued his winning ways in 65Jr. Once out front after the second corner, there was no stopping the smooth, and fast little guy. As Op-

The +30 class saw really tight battle between the top four riders. With Justin Fluger out front, Elijeh Gorecki, Larry Bank and Jason Haessig were in close contact all moto. In the end, Fluger held on, as Gorecki finished second. Gorecki, “It was tough out there. This is my first time here, and it isn’t really my cup of tea. I had fun, but this is all different. I’ll be back for sure as it was fun. I’d like to thank Rock River Powersports and my parents.” Rachael Fuller had to fight through a busy couple laps in the eleven rider Women’s class. After a bunch of passing, she took over and got the win. Fuller was thrilled Erik Utech is a regular at the fair racing events, tonight winning the +25 class, then finishing second in both Open and 250A. after the tough moto, “I just tried to pin it in the corners because in my penlander did his thing out front, Mileverything!” other race I went over a couple berms. Azzie’s Ron Bean Memorial Lake Mills, Wisconsin - September 17 By Bambi Yogerst

A

s we are every time at Aztalan, we were greeted with a smile by Carmie Thompson, Azy member, gate keeper and Super Senior rider! Track prep was under way, and the track looked great. Riders were getting signed in, and it looked like a great turnout under partly cloudy skies! The program for the evening would include the rescheduled, because of, yes, rain, the 4th annual Ron Bean Memorial Race. This special event is in memory of Super Senior rider Ron Bean who passed away of cancer. Brad Boughton on his Honda and Steve Wasser were the winners of the two Super Sr heat races, but it was Mike Anschutz from Sturgeon Bay on his Yamaha that got the holeshot in the main event. From there he stayed ahead of Wasser and the others until the mid-point of the race. Wasser continued to put the pressure on Anschutz, trying to get around for the lead. White flag out for the last lap, and Wasser was almost attached to Anschutz’s rear wheel. Coming down the back stretch it looked as if he is going to get along side, but then making two quick mistakes gave Anschutz a little more Mike Anschutz with the Ron Bean Memorial Trophy. edge to grab the win and have his name placed on the Ron Bean TroSuper Seniors line up for the 4th Annual phy for a second time! It was another exciting Ron Bean Memorial main event. race for the Seniors (+40)! Jack Kainz was first into turn one. Jim Kirschbaum, Jeff Blom and Sergius Figliuzzi were charging right behind. By turn four, Figliuzzi made the pass to take over third. Going into turn one of the next lap, Kirschbaum went side by side with Kainz and took the lead, flying down the back stretch. Figliuzzi was also on the move, now working on Kainz who is still fighting back for the lead. Kirschbaum gained a little ground as Kainz continued to hold off Figliuzzi through the final lap Figliuzzi before they finished in that order. 20

Coolbeth Chills Smith at Springfield Mile Illinois State Fairgrounds Springfield, Illinois- September 4 By Gordon Lunde

T

ime is forever, time is fleeting, but this time was .009 seconds between first and second place at the fall edition of the Springfield Mile. Kenny Coolbeth Jr. won his first race of the 2016 season by following Bryan Smith for 24 7/8 laps of the fastest mile on earth. Coolbeth sat on Smith’s rear tire from the first corner, every lap until the last lap, last corner, then got by at the checkered flag by that scant .009 second gap. After a winning streak of four straight races at the Springfield Mile, Smith, riding the Crosley/ Howerton Kawasaki Ninja 650, looked strong to make it five in a row. He led all of his practice sessions, the H-D Pole Award in qualifying and his heat race. Coolbeth had not played all his cards though. Instead of trying to get by Smith, he followed, lap after lap, presumably not able to get by the strong running Kawasaki. On the last lap, Coolbeth pulled his Zanotti Racing Harley-Davidson XR750 out of Smith’s shadow exiting turn four. The move didn’t go exactly as planned as he came out a little high and the rear tire spun, but in the end, he pulled out a great draft pass for the victory. Filling the podium was Cory Texter on

#42 Bryan Smith and #2 Kenny Coolbeth

the Texter Racing Kawasaki 650. Late in the race Texter had closed in on Coolbeth and Smith but couldn’t get close enough to challenge for the win. Jared Mees suffered a mechanical problem in his Rogers Racing H-D XR750 allowing Smith to close up the point gap between the top runners in the AMA GNC1 Championship. The point gap sat at 17 after the Springfield Mile. Since then the AMA reinstated points to Smith through an appeal of a technical violation penalty from earlier this year. With that reinstatement, the point gap going into the final GNC1 event of the season at the Ramspur Winery Santa Rosa Mile was only two points! The GNC2 race was won by Ryan Wells on the Parkinson Bros. Racing Kawasaki 650. Wells thought he had a clear run to the flag, but was challenged late in the race by Dalton Gauthier riding the Racing Unlimited Kawasaki. Gauthier finished second followed by Tristan Avery, making it an all Kawasaki podium. The Illinois State FairDistrict 16s own Charlotte Kainz grounds has a seasonal camp-

ground that host campers for both races. Everything from full size Class A motor homes to bikers with a tent on the sissy bar fill the grounds. Some of the campers are within 50 ft of the gate of the short track which is held Saturday evening. The spring short track is a TT race and the fall event is a short track. The racing is great and the air is electric with excitement. On Mile day the fairgrounds are packed with fans enjoying live music, great food and refreshments. Vendors are selling shirts and other race fan goodies and there are always the raffle vendors selling tickets to win new motorcycles. A small vintage/ antique bike show draws a crowd at each event. The Springfield Mile is a special place. Veteran fans and racers have been making the trip to central Illinois every year for decades. When Kawasaki started winning, the Harley fans began to fade away, but maybe with Coolbeth’s recent victory they’ll be back. The World’s Fastest Mile… who cares who wins, the racing is the best mile dirt track you’ll ever see. Be there, Labor Day weekend 2017 to witness the fastest flat track racers in America on the fastest flat track in the world. I t doesn’t get better than this.

Ki Tracks one race of 2016 Oregon, Illinois - August 14 By Josh Rud, ShiftOnePhotography.com

K

i Tracks was underway once again with their only race of the year this season. It was a great mid-summer turnout at the park today with riders filing in to hit up the cool natural terrain track in Oregon, Illinois. The track layout has undergone some changes since I was here last. Most notably the off camber downhill jump now has a straight run-up with a new line cut through the woods leading up to it. This makes for even more interesting lines to form through-out the already fun track to race on. The track was in great shape all day, with very little work needed to be done today, and everything ran extremely smooth as always. Supermini was on the line with some great racing in store for everyone. In the first moto Zennon Shain took the win with David Frawley and Lane Christians rounding out the podium. The second moto took off the line with Shain pulling a nice holeshot and jumping out front, being chased down by Jaden Pogliano and Frawley. Coming up the hill heading into the woods Frawley pulled into

second with Christians following him to take over third. Christians was on the move, quickly jumping up to second. Frawley wasn’t giving up and kept right on him for several laps as was able to

make the pass back into second and make it stick. Coming across the line it was the same finish as the first moto with Shain taking the win and the overall on his Suzuki.

Eddie Lengwin airing out his Yamaha in the Open B class, where he finished third.

The popular natural terrain of Ki Tracks MX.

Pete Parenti charging to 2-3 finishes in the 65Jr class, for third overall.

Jaden Pogliano did come back in the Women’s class to score back to back moto wins for the overall ahead of Kryten Merchantz. Open B was a great battle today. In the first moto Scott Kooistra took the win with Joseph Voegtle and Eddie Lengwin finishing off the top three. The gates dropped on the second moto with Eddie Kline jumping out front for an early lead followed by Kooistra and Voegtle. Around the first bowl turn Voegtle was on the on the move jumping up to second and pushing towards the front. With the pack still jumbled up, Voegtle was able to move into the lead coming up the hill with Kooistra moving back to second and Kline settling into third. Heading around the finish to start the second lap Nick Blumer was on mission and had worked up into the third position, while the two up front were staying right on each other. It was anyone’s game at this time. Kooistra emerged out of the woods into the back section of the track having taken over the lead once again. With the laps winding down Eddie Lengwin was now pushing forward from getting caught up in a bad start, now into third. Coming across the line it was Kooistra taking the overall, Voegtle in second and Lengwin

securing third overall for the day. 250C was an intense race as always with the largest group of the day. In the first moto Brock Shelton took the win followed by Nick Harris and Tanyon Palka. The second moto started off strong with Shelton ripping out front on his KTM, and not looking back, followed by Harris and Dan Mormino. It didn’t take long for Palka to come back into the mix, taking over third while Shelton was starting to pull quite a gap on the field already. As the laps wore on Palka was giving Harris a run for his money, with the two of them going back and forth several times. Shelton took the win and the overall, followed by Harris and Palka in third for a repeat of the first moto. It was a great day out at Ki Tracks for their only race of the season this year. There were some really nice ruts building up through-out the day and it made the racing even better. Be sure to check out Ki tracks next summer for a great time.

eptember was a wild month at Lincoln Trail Motosports in Casey, IL. It started with the three-day Labor Day weekend when they hosted over 1,000 entries with races on every part of the complex. Bikes filled both of the big MX tracks, the practice tracks, woods trails with creek crossings, a freshly built enduro section, and combinations of all of the above. LTM had something for every person who loves to ride a dirt bike. On Sunday, September 4th it was the MXer’s turn to race, and for just the third time this season they lined up at the gate of the Classic Track. Usually it’s the old guys who are excited to be back on the Classic Track, but this weekend there was one confident kid happy to be on the Classic: 14 year-old Honda man JC Hoyt. “I can always hit everything on the Classic so it just makes it more fun, and I really like the first section – from the start to over the tunnel jump.” This 9th grader is racing in two classes this season, 85Sr and Supermini. Hoyt said starts are something he knows he has to work on. “You just have to tell yourself your brakes will work and you can stay on the throttle longer. And for a good start you need to find the happy medium, somewhere between too excited or too relaxed at the gate.” Ten riders left the gate for the first moto of Supermini, none faster than the Skyler Corbin. Corbin led the field for every lap of both motos. Behind him Adain Glasgow stayed steady, crossing the finish in second. Like in 85Sr, Flynn had a strong start, coming out third, but an early pass by Kyle O’Connor on his Yamaha and a last-lap pass by Tretter left Flynn in fifth. Second moto was a different story for everyone behind Corbin. Though Glasgow and Flynn both started strong, it was Justus Woodford that stayed on the throttle, passing both to take the checkered in second. His sixth place finish in the first moto was enough to give him a fourth overall. Drafting behind Woodford was Tretter. He made his passes of Glasgow

and Flynn in the final lap taking third for the moto and second overall. Glasgow’s 2-5 finishes were enough to keep in the medals for the overall, taking third. The gate for the third race of the day held the young men of Schoolboy 1. Husky rider Nolan Dickinson showed why he’s the D17 points leader, leading his field every lap for both motos. Although the Yamaha of Dylan Roe got the holeshot, Dickinson took the lead early and never looked back. The Honda of Beau Noland was never far behind. The 1-23 finishes of Dickinson, Roe and Noland held straight for both motos and the overall. Vintage took the same drop as Schoolboy 1, and their race provided some of the best and some of the worst that mx racing can give. In moto one Jason Straight and his Honda led the class throughout the race. Hot on his rear tire were the Kawi’s of Jesse Ruffner and Dustin Biggs, but those three stayed in line finishing the moto in that order. Just behind them the battle was raging. Valley Raceway’s Battle score of Waelchli. 250C was the largest class of the weekend and it was Graumann on his YZ125 getting to the front of the class in moto one. Dante Hatfield and Matt Wood were running in the top three. Josh Nelson and Justin Lowen had a battle over fourth place. At the checkers, it was Graumann, Wood, Hatfield, Nelson and Lowen. Moto two took off and it was tough to see who got the holeshot as the start sweeps to the right and then heads down hill and out to the back straight. As the group came around for end of lap one, it was Graumann again in the lead. Brock Noreen had troubles in moto one but was running top three in moto two with Nelson. Wood and Ian Beal were keeping the pack behind them as the laps clicked by. At the checkers, Graumann had the win and overall with a perfect 1-1. Nelson held on to second for the moto, just beating Noreen. Wood’s 2-4 gave him the bronze medal. Lowen went 5-6 for fourth, beating out the 7-5 of Beal. 50Sr had some epic battles even though the top five riders all got the same moto scores both motos. Going 1-1 was

s summer winds down and going back to school for most kids is on everyone’s thoughts, it’s nice to have a race trip into Michigan’s UP to make summer vacations complete. Valley Raceway in Crystal Falls, MI held its Battle at the Border, a District 16 double header motocross race the last weekend in August. It’s a long a trip for a bunch of Wisconsin riders, but I enjoy the time in the truck with my kids and scenic north woods ride. Weather was optimal for the drive up and we were excited to get to the facility. Saturday’s racing action started with the125Jr class. Moto one set sail and it was the #411 of Wyatt Liebeck, Trevor 34

Edwards and Ezra Graumann running out front. Haiden Waelchli, Desirae Steier and Daegan Tuoriniemi were in a battle right behind the them. Edwards on his CR125 was hanging with Liebeck while with Graumann trying to keep pace. At the end, it was Liebeck with the moto win. Moto two again saw Edwards, Liebeck and Graumann in front of the pack. Marco Gravedoni who had some problems in moto one with a ninth was running in the top five. At the checkers, it was close finish but Liebeck held on to the win and overall ahead of the charging Edwards. Graumann was a solid third. Steier’s consistent 5-5 put her in fourth beating out the 4-6

Cruz Anschutz after hard fought victories over Jace Miller from Calumet MI and fellow Wisconsin rider Logan Kresal. Each moto Anschutz got out to the lead as Miller and Kresal would come through the pack and slowly chip away at the lead. Kane Kalies and Carter Millette ran well also in the top five. On the white flag lap of moto two, Miller was flying through the whoops and closed right up on Anschutz as they both pinned the throttle towards the checkers. Anschutz beat Miller by a wheel. I think they both leaped those 50cc bikes to new track records on the peewee track. Michigan resident John Vandezande put his #38 Kawasaki into the lead in moto one of the +25A class while Andy Zambon and Eric Uren also from MI were running top three. Jesse Frassetto and Brian Ludwig from Wisconsin were pushing hard behind them. The Michigan boys rode solid and went 1-2-3. Moto two, Frassetto took the lead and held on for the win ahead of Vandezande. Zambon held third ahead of Uren and Ludwig. For the overall, Vandezande’s 1-2 was good enough to take the overall, beating Frassetto’s 4-1. Zambon went 23 to hold onto third. The good news about the battle at the border, 99% of the time it doesn’t matter what state you are from, riders can battle on the track are still just as good of friends after. Senior +40 class had eleven old schoolers taking to the sandy course. Tom Kalies who was instrumental in getting a bunch of riders up to the track for the weekend was out front and in command in moto one. Darin Dionne and Dan Van Daalwyk ran second and third. Andy Bowman was solid in fourth just ahead of Marc Ottenad. In moto two, Kalies again snuck into the lead and crept away from the pack. I was watching a good battle behind him as most of the riders were bunched up. On lap two, Bowman and Ottenad were chasing Van Daalwyk. Bowman had to check up on a double and came up short, which led to a calf injury and a much slower pace. Ottenad was then under pressure from Dionne the rest of the moto. Tom Nielsen moved into the top five and was two positions better than moto one. At the checkers it was Kalies with the win and overall ahead of Van Daalwyk. Ottenad held off Dionne who tried to make a last second pass in the corner before the checkers. Dionne still

took home the bronze with a 2-4 score beating the 5-3 of Ottenad. Props to the Valley Raceway crew for running a good program and making the Battle at the Border a great ending to a nice summer. D17 State MX Championship Sunset Ridge delivers another great event Walnut, IL September 11th By Josh Rud Photos by: ShiftOne Photography

S

eptember brought to us Sunset Ridge MX’s double header weekend, with Sunday being the District 17 Illinois State Championship race. It was a great weekend out at the track with great turn-outs both days, and some tweaks to the track to keep everything fresh... you couldn’t ask for a better race. The motos went off without a hitch all day, as the crew kept the track detailing going all day without ever stopping. Early in the day, the large 250C class delivered some great racing. In the first moto Brock Shelton took the win with Indiana’s Bryce Scott and Iowa’s Nick Wuertzer rounding out the podium. The second moto got underway with Matt Mcdannel edging out the holeshot with Shelton and Aden Merchant in line with the rest of the group looking for a way to the front. Moving up the hill Shelton quickly got up into first with Wuertzer now sitting in third. Going through the next sections of corners the pack was very packed together, and Paul Law found a great line cutting through everyone and got all the way up to second with Mcdannel getting caught in traffic and Wuertzer still hanging on for third. The laps clicked by and Law ended up going down with a lap to go with Bryce Scott taking over third as they crossed the finish line. Shelton took the win and over-

all for the day, Wuertzer in second also took second overall with Scott taking third overall. Supermini put on an insane battle today, a really fun one to watch. In the first moto Wisconsin’s Dj Gritzmacher took the win followed by Conner Burger and Patrick Murphy. The second moto started with Murphy not making it to the line with bike problems. They took off with Suzuki mounted Zennon Shain jumping out front, followed by Burger and Gritzmacher. Coming up the hill Burger took off out front with Gritzmacher not far behind. The two quickly started a battle for the win. After two laps of going back and forth Gritzmacher was able to make a pass stick and started to gain a little bit when all the sudden Burger went down after the finish line. Motocity Hare Scrambles

Travis Illies, first place PeeWee.

Staples, Minnesota - September 18 By Paul Otto

T

his weekend’s festivities started on Saturday with open practice on the motocross track. Although most of the Hare Scramble course is out in the woods, riders were honing in their skills on the motocross track to get a competitive advantage on their competition by learning how to jump all the obstacles. With the day ending - a near full moon and ragging fire pits illuminated the night with campers reminiscing about the past, present and how tomorrow they have to make a decision on weather to kiss the trophy girl or take the hardware for winning. If they only knew that Dale Kadlec was the trophy girl it would have been a no brainer. A kiss all the way. With riders taking advantage of the open practice day it still wasn’t enough to deal with the likes of Jerry Robin. The newly crowned Loretta Lynn Champion, and now riding Pro in AMA motocross, he put a serious beat down on everyone by getting the holeshot and leading the 42

CYCLE USA, October 2107

race from start to finish. Not only does he have mad skills on the moto track, he is just as fast in the woods, beating the likes of eventual second place rider Nick Swenson by almost seven minutes. Swenson riding his Motorex, Fly Racing, Checkpoint Off-road backed Honda CRF250 had his hands full battling with Nehemiah Buchholz throughout his race. Buchholz caught Swenson on the motocross track when his front end got caught up in the sand slowing his momentum. Swenson got back on the gas and the two were in a drag race, hitting the triple to fly side by side as Swenson looked over trying to avoid a mid flight collision. Buchholz was able to get to the ground first and pinch off Swenson in the corner allowing him to take over second. Buchholz unfortunately had a crash the next lap and eventually would succumb to the ever hard charging Kyle Nelson on his Larson’s Cycle KTM 150. In the end Robin took the win followed by Swenson and Nelson rounding out the podium. PeeWee rider Travis Illies took his KTM 65 to the top spot for an impressive Bradley Johnson in Senior A

fifth time this year. When asked how his race went, Travis responded with “Great, except when I pinned my head between a tree and my front wheel.” He had no comment on how that happened and away he went with a big ol smile on his face and his first place plaque in hand. Gotta love that. The apple didn’t fall too far from the tree as Dad, Dan Illies, took his third win of the year in the Open A class aboard his newly acquired Husqvarna. I’m guessing Dan likes his new ride and has gotten acclimated to it’s characteristics with a ride like that. Illies took home the win keeping him in the points lead followed by Drey Lacroix in second and also second in points while Dan Liedahl pulled out a third to round out the podium. Star Powersports rider Jaime Forslund finally got on that elusive podium with a third place finish in +30B. Coming back from a sixth place start, Forslund rode consistent laps until lap five when he had to pit. Pulling into the pits, Forslund’s gas can was down farther than he thought costing him some valuable time trying to locate it and quite possibly a second place finish. I think in his next racing contract he should request a pit crew. So, look out Vet B. Hitting the podium gives a rider more confidence and that’s not good for

C class riders away the start.

everyone else. Coy Jackson took the win ahead of Scott Miller Having a breakout ride was Chaz Herzog. The newer AA rider has been outside the top ten all year on his Honda. Chaz, like most of us thought he was much faster than his results and convinced his dad he needed a different bike. So out with the old and in with the brand new Yamaha YZ250F. Initial testing proved that the Yamaha was a much better fit for Chaz as he felt right at home and could control the Yamaha with much more precision than the old red machine. Testing and racing are two different animals, but Herzog proved that his skills are in fact better than his results had been. Seventh after the first couple of laps, Herzog pushed his way up to fifth before the checkered flag dropped. We should see some even better results from Herzog once he gets better acquainted with his new ride. Trail boss Quentin Blomberg and crew did a outstanding job preparing the course for the 200+ riders. He conveyed that working with Motocity owners Dale and Sharon Kadlec is always a pleasure and hopes they stick around for years to come. I think a lot of people can attest to this. Get out and enjoy the remaining time as summer is over and winter will be upon us before we know it. Enjoy the ride.

Joliet’s D17 Bonus Event

Scotty Scamen leading the C class.

Joliet, Illinois - September 25 By James and Rollanda Pinckard

J

oliet Motorsports Park hosted a District 17 Bonus points race on the back track. The “back” track is their outdoor motocross track. The staff and track crew did a great job at this event. There was a dark cloud over Joliet as we got started... Not a bad ‘sign’ or anything… but a dark cloud and the threat of rain. The event was flowing though and the track was awesome. It looked like we would make it through to the end but on the ninth race in the second set of motos the rain came and it came hard! With concern for rider safety Joliet cut the event short. Rev Larry Bank wears many hats at Joliet Motorsports Park. Not only does he hold church, he is the announcer and the referee and even sang the National Anthem! He also wears a helmet and races. In the +50 class that had nine riders, Bank finished second both motos behind Honda rider David Jolin. In the +45 class first moto Honda rider 44

ished first with Gomez second. In the second moto Jolin was flying and took the win. Bank had better luck this moto and finished second for the moto and overall ahead of Gomez. Roland Gomez and his KTM were also in the 30B class. Always a fast fun class it often has lots of good racing and this day didn’t disappoint. In the first moto District 17 points Bob McGee had things under control taking the win. Gomez nailed a good start and rode strong to second after battling with third place finisher Brian Kooistra. Right before the second moto the track crew did some work and put down some water. McGee jumped to the front with Gomez and Kooistra in tow. McGee lost his front end on a slick spot and went down! McGee picked up his bike and remounted as riders passed by. Faced with a new challenge, McGee took off passing riders, but Gomez had his KTM on the gas! Gomez rode a strong moto never letting up and took the win giving 85cc riders, Brandon Bollino out front him a well-deserved overall.

David Jolin was again on the gas with the KTMs of Bank and Roland Gomez in tow. Bank was on Gomez and as they went into the third corner Bank cut under Gomez looking for a way through and went down! Bank remounted and set after the leaders but couldn’t make up the time. Jolin fin-

McGee finished second taking with Kooistra third. The 250B class was on the move and for sure those dudes are fast! In the first moto Nolan Dickinson took the win with Tyler Collin second and Eddie Lengwin third. In the second moto things got crazy. First moto winner Dickinson finished seventh giving him fourth overall. Tyler Collin was King of the Hill this moto taking the win and overall. KTM rider Gavin Hawks had a great moto and finished second after finishing fifth in the first, giving him third overall. Lengwin again found himself in third at the finish for second over- Quad B Winner Jeremiah Stearns all. Joliet also hosts Quads, and in the Quad A class Drake Koelling took both motos wins. In Quad B it was a three way tie for the overall. In the first moto Kelton Zeman took the win with Ryan Dassow and Jeremiah Stearns behind. In the second moto Stearns decided he liked it out front much better and took the win with Dassow second and Zeman third, giving each rider a moto score of 4. Being tie breaker is the second moto Stearns took the overall. In the Quad C class Tyler Shugars grabbed both moto wins. Bryan Reehoff took second in the first moto but had trouble that took him out of moto two. Luke Burmeister went 3-2 taking second overall. Alex Veith finished fourth the first moto and with a strong third in the second moto he was third overall. 250C had some good action as always. In the first moto Yamaha rider Scotty Scamen snagged the holeshot and motored on to a win. Davey Fitzpatrick finished second with Zack Jurgensen third. In the second moto Fitzpatrick was top dog, putting in a strong ride for the moto and overall wins. Jurgensen finished second. Honda rider T J Jungles finished third in the moto, much better than his first moto finish of sixth. First moto winner Scamen finished fourth in the moto, giving Yamaha a sweep of the podium. In the 65 Beg Tanner Haddon took both moto wins. In the Girls’ class Kayla Pogliano took the win and in the Women’s

class her sister Jaden Pogliano took the win with Rollanda Pinckard second. The 85 Beginner class had eleven riders and it just makes me feel good that our sport is growing and Joliet gives them a place to get their feet wet. Kawasaki rider Max Williams took both moto wins and the overall. Suzuki rider Ryan Crowley finished second while Husky rider Peter Parenti finished third in both motos. When they were exiting the track it started to rain. Just a light rain as the next classes prepared for their drop. Last moto of the day was again the

ninth, which happened to be the Schoolboy 2 and Vintage. Not really covering the classes Nolan Dickinson and Tyler Colin were flying!! As my class (Vintage) started the rain was light and the track was perfect! I was having a really good time until the second lap when the skies opened up and it was pouring rain. It was raining so hard at one point you couldn’t really see where you were going. That perfect track quickly became super slick. It’s been a while since I was racing and could feel my boots filling up with water. Once all the riders were safely off the track they announced they were calling the event. Even though it was the right decision it sure would have made for some great pictures and wild racing. Eddie Kline and his bike sitting in a two foot deep swamp after going over the back of a bowl turn - would have been the picture of the day. Glad you’re OK, Eddie.

Great Day at Aztalan

Lake Mills, Wisconsin - September 11

Aztalan Cycle Club

A

ztalan Cycle Club held their annual September double-header, and what started out as a wet weekend, progressively got better and better. Friday saw open riding before the Vet race on Saturday. The area had plenty of rain in advance of the event, then again Saturday it was occasional light rain. All that pushed out Saturday night, and it was a fantastic day for racing on Sunday. The point that this was the September 11th anniversary wasn’t missed at riders’ meeting, and it was a good moment to pause and remember the freedoms we have to enjoy our sport, and how we got them. Racing kicked off right on time, and there was a great turnout in every class, making it another great day to be in Lake Mills. District 16’s newest class, 2 Stroke B/C has been seeing good turnouts all season. Today there was seventeen riders on the gate. In the first moto, it was a battle between two locals. Grabbing the holeshot on his KTM, Jefferson, WI’s Austen Madison had Lake Mills, WI rider Kristopher Korn glued to his rear fender through the first lap. Quickly getting into third place, IL’s Dillon Riemann had a bunch of company from Deven Fell, Devin Blume and Glenn Korn. As the laps ticked away the order held, with everyone opening up a little gap, except the leaders. While

the second time, Johnson jumped into the whoops using an inside line. While it may not have been a faster line, he broke Fluger’s momentum enough to take over the lead. Those two finished 12 after that, with Mark Marescalco, Keith DeGrand and Marc Ottenad rounding out the top five. Fluger had to settle for runner-up in the first moto, but after the gate dropped in moto two he was deter50Jr getting ready to leave the line. mined, and got the Madison held on for the win, he never win. Johnson struggled a bit this time, had a second to sit back and enjoy it until ending up in third as Marescalco picked the flag waved at the end. up the pace for second. Johnson’s 1-3 In the second moto, Korn got out front was still good for second overall. and rode a nice smooth pace for the win ahead of Riemann and Madison. Korn, after the moto, “I got a pretty good start and tried to keep an eye on any wet spots after the grooming. About half way through I just tried to hold the pace and get the win. The track is really good. Yesterday it was a little more tricky with the rain.” The Vet A class saw a bunch of long time fast guys put on a good show. Out front for the first lap, Justin Fluger was on the gas, as he had to be. Brad Johnson was right behind, and as they got to the Ryder Schweighardt with his mom back sand corner Stacy after finishing fifth in 50Jr CYCLE USA, October 2017

In 250B, Seth Doeberlein was quick on his KTM. In the first moto he led right out of the first turn ahead of another fast guy, Jake Smith on his Honda. A lap later, Smith was out front by himself, with Tyler Gamble, James Burd, Ian Malinowski and Austen Madison juggling for positions behind. Doeberlein had fallen, as was now back in sixth. With Smith pulling away, Doeberlein and Nicholas Czechowicz were climbing through the field. It took until the last part of the final lap, but Doeberlein passed into second, just ahead of Czechowicz and Malinowski, as Madison held on for fifth. The second moto was a little less intense, as Doeberlein got out front, and stayed there to the end. Smith kept him honest right from the first turn. Simon Walters figured everything out this time, to finish third after an eleventh in moto one. James Burd was fourth, also improving on his first moto seventh. Mr consistent, Austen Madison finished 5-5 for third overall. Smith, “the first moto I had it easy as Seth went down in the beginning of the race. He was the guy I needed to beat this time, and I just couldn’t find a chance. It was just awesome hanging with him as he’s a real good rider. The track was fantastic all day today. I wasn’t going to come today, but I’m really glad I did, after my good buddy Nick actually paid for me to race. I’d really like to thank him and Tom at Sportland2 as well as Jessie Williams who built my motor.” Logan Rusk put his new KTM out front in the 250C class as they came out of the first corner. By the time they hit the plateau, Brock Noreen had taken the lead with Rusk slipping back a couple spots, behind Maxwell Mayer, and Ian Beal. The order held from there to the end, with Ronald Schmidt rounding out the top five. Rusk put it all together in the second moto. He beat Noreen to the first corner, and then pulled just enough of a gap to get the win. Woodstock KTM backed Rusk, “I ended up getting a good start and riding a comfortable race for the win. The track is pretty awesome everywhere, so it was just a lot of fun riding.” Noreen may have had to accept second in the moto, but it was all he needed to grab the day’s overall. Beal put in another good ride for fourth behind 48

Schmidt, and third overall. 85cc 9-13 had a good mix of riders in it, with a dozen contenders leaving the gate. The order was set right out of the first turn, even though it was a battle for the win, and also over third through each lap. Out front, Brandon Martyniak had his hands full with Elijah Tetzlaff, while Dylan Duclos held third, fending off Justin Oehlhof. These kids put on a great show, just ahead of Aidan Mccormick in fifth. The second moto was more of the same... Martyniak leading all the way, with Tetzlaff not giving him an inch. Oehlhof got a better start this time, and ran in third, ahead of Duclos to the finish. Martyniak after the hard fought win, “I got the holeshot, but then my rear brakes aren’t working well, so I was barely able to hold on to the lead. I felt him (Tetzlaff) trying to pass me all moto.” Tetzlaff, “He beat me through the first corner and then all race the roost was making it hard. I stayed in it, and then we had a medical flag out back where I thought I had found a better line. It was a fantastic race and I’d like to thank Sales and Fly for helping me get here.”

Some really quick young riders often lead the way in the 65cc 7-11 class. Today, Jackson Oehlhof led Ryan Bussen early. Then Oehlhof dropped his bike in a rutted corner just long enough for Bussen to take over. Oehlhof was soon back on the rear fender of Bussen, and as they went up the small grade to the barn section Oehlhof went to the outside making the pass. The move caught Bussen off guard, and he tipped over. Struggling to get his bike upright on the hill, he now

had to deal with Riley and Owen Busse Blakey. Bussen got going once again, and was able to get past Blakey for third, but Busse was gone in second. The second moto order was set early, with Oehlhof leading Busse and Blakey. As they settled in, Bussen pushed hard for fourth, and Ryder Johnson stepped it up to finish fifth, after a seventh in moto one. Rob’s Performance backed Oehlhof after getting the win, “I tried to stay consistent out there, and just hit the jumps right, and be in the right gear all the time. The track was

nice... it was a little chunky in the start, but I still got the holeshot.” Ian Malinowski had the best reaction, getting the holeshot in the Sportsman’s class. His lead was short lived as he dropped back to mid-pack in the second lap. By the third lap, the juggling out front had slowed a bit, with Logan Rusk climbing from fourth to lead. Eric Leach was running second, and while he held on to the end, it wasn’t without a lot of pressure from Hunter Schueller. Leach got a taste of the lead for a while in the second moto, but by the third lap Rusk had charged from third to take over the top spot. Malinowski held third to the end, back just a bit from Leach. Schueller rode well again, for fourth, and third overall. The Senior classes are always good sized here at Aztalan, but today they were even better following the Vet race ran the day prior. In the first +40 moto, long time club member Frank Weiss grabbed the holeshot, and held the lead ahead of Brian McCanna. Daniel Lopez ran in third until the last lap when Marc Ottenad made the pass on his Husqvarna, and then went after and passed McCanna for second. Tom Ferguson finished fifth in the eighteen rider class. The second moto was all Karter Busse out front. Ottenad got a good jump, and smartly rode in second to take the day’s overall. Weiss worked into third on the first lap, and went after Ottenad, but to no avail as Mark had is smaller two stroke rippin around the track. Wayne Welzien led early in +50, while eighteen others gave chase. In the second lap, Weiss made the pass back by the sand corner, then Glenn Korn found a line around Welzien a lap later. That set the final order as Gregg White and Phil Berndt filled fourth and fifth. In the second moto, by the third lap the order was set, exactly matching moto one, and Weiss completed his perfect sweep in the class. The race wrapped up late afternoon, early compared to the old days... but the club is into running a good efficient day and it shows. The concessions were

Almost 600 race Viking Clash Millville, MN August 28 By Rolfe Otterness

J

ayden Clough exhibited Viking-like toughness as Spring Creek MX Park once again hosted their annual Viking Clash event. Clough was the only rider to snag four overall wins on the day, with 65cc 10-11, 7-11, 85cc 9-11 and 912 all falling into his hands. Truly an outstanding day for the young pup! On the other hand there was a blast from the past blowing into the A classes as Scott Jendro took gold in the +25A, 30A and Open A classes. He was a regular competitor at SCMP some years back, but his visits are much less frequent now so a pretty good day for ol’ Scooter too. At 582 race entries there were a lot of other riders on hand to give it a try on the gnarly Spring Creek circuit. The track was savaged by a flood less than a month before the event and Johnny M and his crew of mighty minions were hardpressed to bring it back to full glory in time for the Clash, but they prevailed in

the end. The mild-mannered creek gets rowdy with 6 or 7 inches of rain feeding it and it took a lot of dozer work to lay down a track surface in many locations.

The whoops were erased, and new soft sand brought back the feel of yesteryear to the sandwash. The other fun news from the track entailed the special events

Perfect Night at Megacross

egacross was underway once again at the end of September with some great racing action tonight. The weather is certainly starting to tell some tales of summer being gone. Later in the evening it was in the low 50’s which of course in the Midwest nothing is new. A good amount of rain during the week actually worked out well. The track was in great shape and with some cloud cover, no maintenance was needed as the it shaped up with quite a few good options for passing. It made for some great racing with a lot of battles throughout the night. The C class riders were out in full force tonight, including so many riders in Open C it was split into two classes. In 250C, many of the same riders went at it full force as well. With twenty rid-

ers off the line into the first turn with Lucas Garrels jumped out Ayden Oppenlander topped the 65Jr class. front to an early lead being chased down by back to win his division. came across the line with Jackson taking the win. Murphy was able to secure second place and Pilon went uncontested for third. Open B was a really crazy race tonight. Right off the line there was a huge pile up as Nick Blumer jumped out front, avoiding the carnage followed up by Nate Hornung and Justin Carr. As they hit the whoops Travis Ward was on the charge, moving into third and then quickly into second. Carr got by Hornung through the table tops and moved into third. Tyler Peters didn’t go down in the start, but was held up and charged through several laps, pushing his way into third place on the second lap. Ward battled hard with Blumer trying several lines to get a run on him and got shut down each time. Coming into the chicane before the white flag Ward was able to take over the lead. They made their way around to the finish line with Ward +25 class winner Benjamin Schmidt.

taking the win, Blumer in second and Peters holding third. Megacross was a great show tonight and the track was awesome as ever. I talked with several riders that were all really excited on how the lines were forming all night. With one race left out at Megacross it will surely be a great night as everyone will be out trying to get in those last rides before the snow comes. D23 Bonus Points Event Special two-day race weekend goes over really well in Mankato Mankato, Minnesota - September 17/18 Motokazie Motocross event

M

id September brought the first of two special bonus points events to District 23 motocross riders. The events are run over two days, with each class getting in three motos. Points are paid on each moto, so this becomes a very big deal for riders looking to either lock in a good season, or maybe catch up after falling short earlier in the summer. Either way, with two events running back to back, there’s a good chance you need to attend, and do well these two weekends if you want to win a District 23 championship. This weekend saw fantastic weather, and it was needed to help dry off all the water that came down early in the week. As always, the Motokazie crew did everything needed to run another great event. Riders began filing in on Friday, and saw the racing wrap up mid-day on Sunday. Ham Lake, MN’s Justin Craft had a great run through the first motos of the 250A class, but then it all came apart on Sunday’s third moto. While leading, and just after the half-way point, his bike simply died. He pushed it to the finish area, to spectate the remaining laps. Meantime, Marcus Winch was on a roll. He came from third to take the win ahead of Austin Kienast. Winch had gone 3-2-1 in his motos, but it was for second overall when all done and said. With a few other riders not finishing the already small class, Craft was wise enough to wait, and push his bike across the line and record a finish. Combined with his other wins, not only did he earn the points, but he still got the overall. In the 250B class, Brainerd, MN’s Austin Aspros was simply unstoppable. He won the first two motos, then

made quick work of moto three as well. Aspros, “I’ve been pulling holeshots and riding real well. So far I’ve won every moto I’ve been in so it is going really well (this, and Open B). I’m just having fun on the track. The ruts out

there are getting better so you just have to go out and get in the flow. I’ve been doing a lot of racing in D23 this year, and I like the three moto format with the extra racing this weekend for sure. I’d like to thank my parents for everything, as well as Brothers Motorsports, 100%, Gaerne and Renthal.” As decisive as his wins were, Austin Kristiansen also made a statement, by finishing second in each of the 250B motos. Austin had just made the jump up after having a big season in the C classes, so this was a pretty darn good day for him. He also went 2-3-2 in Open B for second overall. Finishing third in 250B was South Dakota’s Eli Bindert (3-3-4). He and Walker Kruse were never far apart (4-4-3). The 65cc classes saw plenty of consistency out Tim Bernloehr won six motos in his +45 and +50 classes. front through the weekend. CYCLE USA, October 2017

In 65cc 7-9 Brandon Long and Brady Karolevitz finished 1-2 in all three motos. Caleb Bohlman went 3-3-4, finishing behind Ryan Sheetz on Sunday. In the 65cc 10-11 division, Domenic

Hegman swept through all three motos as well. The Rogers, MN rider jumped out front right away on Sunday, and slowly gapped the rest of the class. Jordan, MN’s Luke Geis finished second on his

Cobra, after going 3-2 on Saturday. Brodie Boumeester (2-3-3) finished third overall, having good close battles with Geis both days. Hegman after winning his third moto, “It has been a great day, and I really like the track, there’s a lot of traction out there today. I like the three moto two day race as well. I want to thank Powerband Racing, Division 6 and my family.” That same consistent theme was running in the 250C class, at least through the first two motos. Nick Fox had his Kawasaki rippin as he topped motos one and two ahead of Kole Lemcke and Aaron Boatman. On Sunday, 250C was one of the earlier motos, and Lemke seemed motivated to mix things up. After grabbing the holeshot, he dug deep through the first lap to hold Fox back. Then mid-way through the second lap, he opened a small lead. Moose Racing’s Kole Lemcke after winning moto three, “I’m just focusing on getting good holeshots. The downhills are a little rough, but you just have to push through them and keep the corner speed up. The difference today was I got the start, and pushed a lot harder through the first lap.” It worked for the win. Fox’s 1-1-2 was still good for the overall, as once again Boatman crossed in third. In the +35 classes, A class rider Jed O’Connor won the first moto ahead of Craig Danberry and Josh Neutgens. In the second moto, Danberry turned the tables, grabbing the win. Now it all came down to the third moto on Sunday. O’Connor grabbed the holeshot giving him the edge. Danberry stayed on his rear fender through the first two laps, then made the pass in the back section before coming back around to the spectator area. O’Connor tried to come back at him, but Danberry wasn’t having any of it, and held his lines to the end for the overall. In +35B, Iowa’s Steve Nelson won the first moto, but from then on he was forced to settle for second behind Jimmy Diedrich. Diedrich’s 2-1-1 helped bring the first place trophy back to Clearwater, MN. Benny Van Cleve topped the nine rider +35C class, winning all three motos. Savage, MN’s Tim Bernloehr had a great weekend. For the most part, he kept his goggles clean, by getting out front and leaving any roost behind. After win-

ning his fifth of the eventual six motos, we caught up with him, “I’m running in +50 and 45A, and yesterday I pulled all four of the holeshots. Today I didn’t get the best start, but I still got them right away to get the win. The guys did a great job on the track again today. Its getting rough out back, but the traction is awesome, and it makes it a lot of fun.” In +50, Richard Blasser went 2-4-2 for second overall ahead of KTM mounted Randall Ross (3-3-4). Blasser also ran in the 45A class, finishing second in all three of his motos behind Bernloehr. Iowa’s Jada Murphy took the overall in the Women’s class going 1-1-2 over the weekend. After settling for the runner-up spot in the first two motos, Katie Vanderwerf took the moto three holeshot, and slowly gapped the field as she went on

for the win. A little redemption never hurts, ending the weekend in a big way. Murphy worked her way past Trisha Olson in the second lap, but was never able to close any of the gap Vanderwerf built. Olson rounded out the top three in each moto ahead of fourth place overall Cassandra Hall (6-4-4). Murphy returned in the Girl’s 12-16 class, sweeping all three motos for that overall as well. Murphy after the last moto, “The Women’s class I fell up top and just couldn’t come back fast enough. This last moto in Girl’s was easier as I was out front right away. I just tried to keep a good steady pace and catch as many boys as I could (a combined moto). The track is really prime right now, and this special weekend is fun as you get to meet a lot more people over the two

days.” The 14-24C class saw some good close racing, as Nick Fox fought his way into first for the final moto win. Fox, “I had third off the start, and got around Mitchell Prescott right away. I was on Brandon (Johnson) hard but then he slid out in a corner and I got out front. In the first moto of this class yesterday I crashed and ended up in seventh, then second in moto two. The track is good, and has been getting better all weekend. I like the two day format, just cause you get more riding in.” Fox’s win in the final moto helped lock in third overall. Prescott’s sweep of the first two motos along with second this last moto earned the overall ahead of Nate Myers who quietly earned second overall with 2-3-4 scores.

Center City, MN’s Bob Berger rode to second overall in the +30C class.

Scott Nuss going to fifth overall in the +45 Open class.

Katie Vanderwerf on her way to winning moto three of the Women’s class.

Nick Jackson has been around a long time, and was most likely doing the math as he put in his laps in moto three of the +25A class. Running in third, after winning the first two motos, all he had to do was stay up for the overall. On the other side of that math, Matt Kline had a 2-3 going as he led the race with Clayton Olson behind him (3-2). Kline needed to beat Olson for second overall or even better depending on Jackson’s ride. All he could control was getting the win, and he was riding really well to get it done. We’ll let PDR Performance’s Clay Olson explain the details of how it ended, “I got a decent start there behind Matt, and he was riding really well. He is always fast here. Making it harder, I had Nick behind me the entire time. On the last lap he (Matt) bobbled and I was able to make a pass stick. It was a good fun race. I’ve been riding really well for my first time here, staying in the top three. I love the track.” Olson got the win for second overall. Kline’s small mistake let Jackson slip past as well, not that it played out in the overall. It was a good, clean, three rider race for sure. Later, Jackson also wrapped up the overall in the Open A class (2-1-2) ahead of Marcus Winch (41-2) and Olson (3-4-4). As another season winds down, no doubt this event will go in the books as a good one. Late Summer at LTM

Amelia Washburn

Casey, Illinois - August 21 By James and Rollanda Pinckard

L

incoln Trail Motosports hosted Round 7 of the Fly Racing Showdown Series, along with a Fly Ride Day. Western Power Sports/ Fly was on hand with their big rigs and displays of their products. So, what’s a track owner to do when the forecast is calling for one of those “might rain” sort of Saturdays for the entire state of Illinois, and you’re racing on Sunday? Well, if you’re LTM you just have Practice Day on your other track! The LTM crew prepped the old-school Classic Track for Saturday and left the Bomber Track sealed up tight until race day. Despite brief Saturday showers, everyone enjoyed some seat time on the Classic in preparation for the race coming there in September. Race day Sunday turned out picture perfect. It started under clear blue skies and temps in the 60’s. Mother Nature never brought more than a few puffy clouds and temps just barely in the 80’s for the 300 entries in attendance. 66

CYCLE USA, October 2107

One racer who had a near-perfect day was Brock Shelton on his KTMs. The gate for 250C held 24 racers, but it was Shelton who led every lap for both motos, taking first overall. Never losing sight of him was Lucas Garrels on his Honda in moto one. Behind Garrels after the first lap were Joseph Boyer, Caleb Hetzler, Jacob McGee, Dallas Daniels and Brandon Turman. By the third lap Boyer was passed by the Hetzler, McGee, and Turman, and by the last lap McGee finally got the pass on Hetzler. The running order of those five Yamaha riders

changed every lap, eventually ending with McGee taking third ahead of Hetzler, Turman, Daniels and Boyer. In moto two McGee launched off the gate, keeping Garrels behind him the entire race. McGee’s 3-2 finishes gave him the second step on the podium. Hetzler stayed consistent, going 4-4 and taking fourth overall. Turman put in the most work, fighting his way up from eleventh in the first lap to take the checkered in fifth. In Open C Shelton was on his 350 and again led every lap of both motos. Garrels stayed close but on the last lap in each moto he lost time working through lapped traffic, ending his charge. It was two Yamahas battling behind them that had the spectators cheering though. In the first moto Jacob Hall was running a solid third, but Dallas Daniels was on him. Daniels found a way around Hall in the final lap and took the checkered in third. Second moto for these two started the same – Hall leading Daniels around the track, but Hall went down after the uphill triple and he had to pull off. Daniels’ 3-3 finishes gave him third overall. When I talked to Hall later he said he’d only decided a few weeks ago to race this season. This was only his 3rd race so far in 2016 and, despite bike problems, he said he’ll be back at LTM for redemption! Another rider in her third race of the season was five year old Amelia Wash-

burn on her 50cc Honda. The very first time she swung a leg over a bike was in April this year. The training wheels came off a month later and she’s battled ever since. Although she took the last wave of the checkered flag in her class, she said she’s getting better on getting her foot out front in turns, going through ruts, and standing on the pegs more. Sounds familiar, right? Two racers in Washburn’s 50 Shaft/ Shifter class who had it all together were Bryar Horton on his Honda and Ryder McGee on his KTM. These two took turns leading the field, with McGee

Open C racer Dallas Daniels of Mattoon, IL

crossing the line first in moto one and Horton winning moto two. Brock Shelton was back at the gate for his third class of the day, in 14-24. This class was a mix of A, B and C riders, and one fearless kid from the 85Sr & Supermini class coming up to test his skills against the big boys. The first moto was all KTM rider Giancarlo Clouser with the fastest lap times on the track. Behind him the battle was between Shelton and the Suzuki of Conner Robinson. Shelton held off Robinson for three laps before a late-race pass by Robinson put him across the finish line in second. The second moto started with Shelton

buried in the pack, finishing the first lap in fourth place. By the second lap Shelton had made his way past both Robinson and the Yahama of Dakota McKay. That left only Clouser between him and a moto win. Not willing to take another loss, he was hard on the throttle. He edged past Clouser on lap three and took the checkered in first. Clouser took the overall with his 2-1 results but Shelton got second overall with his 3-1. Shelton is in his third year of racing, but the first two seasons were cut short by injuries. At age fifteen Shelton was 5’11’. Now at seventeen he stands 6’4”, definitely not your typical mx-er. He did some research and found mod kits from 2Tall Racing. Raising his bikes by two inches has made a big difference in his racing this season. When I asked him how it felt taking the win in the second moto of the 14-24, he said “I didn’t even feel fatigued!” This self-taught racer has a goal winning the Big Plaques for D17 this year and eventually being an A-rider, maybe even Pro. Good luck with the rest of your season, Brock! Jaw-jacking at the gate is pretty normal for some classes, but Schoolboy 2 has it in spades. With a nod to both NASCAR legend Ricky Bobby and to how… competitive… some dads are, Honda racer Spencer Mountcastle smiles because he knows his dad is kidding when he yells ‘if you’re not first, you’re last’ before every gate drop. And when Steve Bell asked his son, Kawi racer Derick Bell, if he had put fuel in his bike, Derick said ‘it doesn’t need it. It’s like a Prius.” To which dad replied “if it doesn’t need it it’s because you aren’t turning the throttle the right way.” Both racers did well, though neither could catch the Yamaha of Dakota McKay. Bell made a strong pass of fellow Kawasaki racer Clayton Clary in the second lap of moto one to take the checkered in second. Mountcastle followed Bell in the pass for third. In moto two it was McKay alone in front again, but this time Clary maintained his position over Bell, Mountcastle, and G. Shelton. Clary’s 5-2 finishes were good enough for third overall behind Bell’s 2-3. Whether you’re Brock Shelton in his third year racing, Jacob Hall in his third race this season, or Amelia Washburn in

her third race ever, the fun of racing mx is universal. Amelia (who fought through major heart surgery only four years ago) said “I just like racing and riding with people. I’ve made a lot of new friends because of riding.” Describing her favorite part of the track she sounded just like every other racer: “When you go up the small hill, and then you hit the big giant hill and go back down… you go so fast!” You got that right, kiddo.
