Style

Rainboots Spring Fashion Trend:

By Corinne Card

Rain boots, wellies, galoshes, whatever you call them they are no longer fashionable just for kids. They have become a staple in the northwest style for all ages who like making the best of a rainy day. This mode of stylish footwear has become quite diverse so that each puddle stomper can find their own unique style to step out in. It started out that the only boots you could find were the black and red generic kind at your local gardening store. Then came the endearing, bright colored kid’s boots with the faces of ladybugs and frogs and bumblebees, which usually ended up on the wrong feet. Eventually, adults began to wear the froggy boots, and from there the creativity took off and now there are more styles than you could possibly think of. 6

Rain boots are made with fashion as opposed to just function now, and Steve Madden and Coach have a line of boots to coincide with this year’s tall boot fetish. Kate Spade also has a line of tall boots with a slight heel and a cute bow at the top of the boot. Unfortunately, both Spade, Madden and Coach are on the expensive side, so if you’re looking for some tall fashion on a budget, Zetta boots are only $20 and Walmart has a select few rain boots starting at $12. If you look around, the most popular rain boot style to date is vivid colors and creative designs on regular looking rubber boots. There are so many options out there that you rarely see the same two designs, which is great if you are looking for originality. Kamik boots, which

are sold at Nordstrom among other places, have a great array of designs to choose from such as bright floral, classy black and white designs, schoolgirl plaid and plain solid colors as well as collages of fun pictures. These boots can also be considered expensive starting at $50, so if you’re looking for a cheaper alternative, Target has a great selection of really neat retro or mod designs starting at $20. You can also keep your eyes out for a great deal at your local second-hand store. A rather unconventional version of the rain boot is the ankle boot. Ankle boots are a more dainty style, and would be the best fit for those who experience light rainy days, as they aren’t very practical for accidentally or purposefully stepping in large puddles. Adi Designs has an ankle boot called Misbehave, which look like generic tennis shoes that can be found online for $35. Otherwise, there are not very many ankle boots available, as it the style for this season is knee-high boots or higher. The way you wear your boots is your preference according to your unique style. You can tuck your skinny jeans or leggings into them, you can wear them with a skirt or shorts or you can even roll your jeans up over them! You can also buy fleece boot liners for under $10 at Walmart or Target to keep your toes warm on those really cold days. Because Washington weather can change from sun to rain within a few minutes especially with the spring coming in like a lion, rain boots are a hot commodity for north westerners. There is nothing quite as satisfying as walking through a big, muddy puddle in the rain with your cute boots just because you can. It’s the same feeling you get when you go out of your way to step on that crispy looking leaf and are rewarded with a crunch under your feet. Boots can be worn from fall to spring and even sometimes in the summer. They are a functional way to express your personality and turn a typical Washington rainy day into a lovely day.

Spring

Fashion

with Megan Cherewatenko By Britta Dillon

Photo Courtsey of Rodrigo DeMedeiros

Megan is a 21 year-old working towards her Bachelor of Fashion Design at the Art Institute of Seattle. She just started her 4th year and will be graduating in winter 2012.

Q. What made you decide to pursue a career in Fashion Design?

MC-I knew from a pretty young age I wanted to have a career in fashion, I just didn’t know what exactly and probably didn’t until about a year ago. At a young age my parents always pushed being a doctor or lawyer on me, since they thought I was the “smart and ambitious” daughter out of their three children. I grew up learning how to sew by my mom and grandma, and always found pleasure in shopping, flipping through fashion magazines, and even dressing up for no occasion at all. However, it wasn’t until my oldest sister, Rachel, told me I should look into a career in the fashion industry. It was like an epiphany, since at the time I was too young to even have thought that was possible career. It made the high school decisions of ‘finding your career pathway’ much simpler since I already knew what I wanted to do. My sister then helped me research possible schools, and went to visit some in California and here in Seattle. After viewing rates of out of state private school tuition, I decided to stay in Seattle.

Q. When did you start designing clothing?

MC- I would like to say I tried to design things way before I was ever in college, but I try to forget about those times because the way things turned out…calling it embarrassing would be putting it lightly! However, it’s fun to go back and look at old things and be like… “Oh my gosh, that’s hideous! What was I thinking?!” The nice thing about AIS that’s different from normal colleges is they let you start taking the design classes at the same time as you’re getting your pre-reqs done. It’s probably not until about the middle of your second year where you start to get the freedom to design what you want.

Q. What’s your immediate plan after graduation?

MC-After graduation, I’m hoping to be living in New York, crossing my fingers that I’ll be able to get a job through my internship(s) so I can start immediately working on paying back my student loans. That’s my number one plan! But I plan on moving around jobs frequently within the first couple years, which is very common in the industry until you get some experience under your belt. Making plenty mistakes and learning from them on someone else’s dime and then getting comfortable at one particular job later.

Q. What’s your long-term goal in the fashion industry?

MC-A long-term goal that seems sometimes to be incredibly out of reach without generous funding would be to have my own line. I have the knowledge and contacts of what it would take for me to design and completely produce and manufacture a line, but the cost to do just one line well would be minimum 100K. It then usually takes a line about three years to actually start making money, and during that time you’re still producing additional lines. So, it is a far-fetched goal, but it would be a dream to get there someday, pretty far down the road, and maybe show at New York Fashion Week!

Q. What is your most recent collection called?

MC- My last collection was called “Garden Party” and was for Spring 2011. It was fairly small and less intricate since it was my junior collection.

Q. Where did you draw your inspiration from for your latest collection?

MC- My spring collection was definitely inspired by floral prints with a touch of fifties details subtly incorporated within the designs. I found inspiration first through various trend forecasting resources, then photographs, fabrics, and textures in order to create a concept board for the collection. 9

Q. What types of fabrics did you work with? Why? MC-This collection was heavy on silks, primarily because they have an amazing hand, they look great when draped, and they’re extremely soft for linings in jackets. I also used lightweight wool for a jacket, linen for pants, some lace for detailing and a few other cotton/polyester blends for other items.

Q. How many hours did you work on this collection? MC- It’s hard to pinpoint exactly how many hours you spend on a collection, mostly because you do a few hours here and there until it’s done and some pieces take longer to do than others. But one piece, depending on the pattern difficulty execution, probably averages about 15-20 hours from start to finish, when done correctly with fitting and adjustments. This collection had 9 pieces in it so I’d guess anywhere from 130-180 hours. It is very time consuming, and none of it is done for a class directly, it’s all done in your spare time using your own money.

Q. What are some of your favorite designers? Why?

MC- Betsey Johnson is my all time favorite designer! I passed one of her storefronts in Las Vegas when I was 14 years old and she pretty much had my love and attention from that day on. We both grew up getting professionally trained in all types of dancing, which she’s said helped her start her career. She is known to be all about color and floral prints and essentially that’s what I love as well. I had the privilege of meeting her last October and was blown away by how incredibly kind and encouraging she was. She continues to be an inspiration to me as a 69-year-old designer, and I hope that one day I will be as successful as she has been and still designing young and fabulous designs when I’m her age. Other designers I love include Nanette Lepore, Diane Von Furstenberg, Matthew Williamson, Alexander McQueen, Kate Spade, Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Marchesa, Burberry Prorsum, and Christian Dior. They are my favorite designers for many reasons but mainly

for their whimsical designs and dramatic uses of colors and prints

Q. What makes you unique from other students pursuing a career in fashion design?

MC-I’ve been told I have an eye for color and prints that is extremely rare. I know that I’m not afraid of working with color, which you’d be surprised at how many people in the industry avoid it. I also believe I tend to design more mass market, which could be a positive or negative thing, depending on how you look at it, but my designs aren’t extremely avant-garde and could generally be sold in a variety of places.

Q. What age group are you shooting to appeal to in your designs?

MC-We get constantly told to design outside of our own market and age group, but that’s really where my aesthetic lays. I would say it varies from piece to piece, you wouldn’t want to see a 40 year old in some of my designs, but in others, it wouldn’t be too bad. Looking ahead, I’d like to appeal to the largest age group possible, probably from 25-45. Not too affordable to become mass market and cheapened, but not at the couture end.

Q. What is one piece of advice you would give to someone wanting to start a career in fashion?

MC- I would start out by saying prepare yourself for long hours, brutal awakenings, and competition… it’s the opposite of easy. Nothing in the fashion industry is sugar coated. You have to be determined, ambitious, driven, optimistic and confident all at the same time. Be sure it is the career for you before you start. Less than 10% of the people I started the program with are still enrolled today. In the school aspect of things, they say that you get as much out of it as you’re willing to put in. I’d suggest getting involved in anything and everything that you can handle. The more experience you have, the better. I’ve learned to squeeze as much opportunity out

as possible, you’ll learn so much more. Lastly, I believe that if you do something you’re passionate for, you’ll never work a day in your life… So before you get in too deep, make sure it’s your passion!

Q. What do you wish people

would understand about working in the fashion industry? MC-I wish people would understand that fashion isn’t all lights, red carpets, and glamour. For instance, there is so much sweat and hours that are put in to making one fashion show happen that lasts about 60 minutes. The amount of work and creative efforts that it takes to take a sketched idea and put it on the runway or on a rack in a store is indescribable unless you know exactly how it happens. People who are unaware of the process just assume it’s a piece of cake career and an easy out and they have no idea. I wish people would just better acknowledge every part of the process that makes it possible to them to walk into a store and buy something off the rack, not even knowing what it took to get it there.

Q. What do you wish people

would understand about working in the fashion industry? MC-Big trends that will be occurring for summer will be a heavy 70’s aesthetic incorporating bohemian styles with sophis-

ticated glamour. Common styles will include long, lightweight maxi dresses, floral prints, high waist and wide leg trousers. The 50’s and 60’s ladylike styles will also return with feminine dresses that accentuate curves and hit right below the knee. Full circle skirts will be a popular look in this category. Rough punk and biker-like trends will also be apparent while the military look will be fading out. Playing off the 70’s theme, lace detailing will be seen everywhere this year, both on tops and dresses, and will be paired with antique looking fabrics. I’m a little scared about this one, but yes, with the 70’s look must come bellbottoms. I haven’t seen them yet, but expect to very shortly! We’ve seen stripes and the nautical theme heavy already this spring, and it will be continuing into summer. Some accessories to look forward to will be an updated more chic version of the fanny pack, aka the belt purse, and clogs and kitten heels will remain in style through the summer. Men can look forward to throwing out their skinny jeans because flared jeans will be the style to run to during the summer months. The motorcycle trend that was brought up in women’s trends will also be seen in men’s trends. Leather jackets with statement collars and hardware that was heavy on the runways will be mass marketed and all the rage this summer. 13

These recipes are great for anyone because they are low in cost, time and calories, while still providing big taste and fulfillment. They’re also perfect for single servings or easy to multiply for outdoor parties with your friends and family.

The Kindle versus the Nook-Who will come out on top? In the age of iPhones, BlackBerry’s and touch screen computers, it is no surprise we now have electronic books. The first electronic book was made by Amazon, the Kindle. This e-book made its debut in November 2007 and was sold out in less than 5 hours. Since then only one other company has come out with an e-book, Barns and Noble with the Nook. With these new gadgets coming out, it’s difficult to know which one best suits your needs. That is why we are bringing both the Kindle and the Nook to the ring to battle it out and see who comes out on top! In the blue corner weighing in at 10.2 ounce we have the Kindle, in the red corner weighing in at 11.6 ounces we have the Nook.

Kindle’s look is very classic and clean, although it does come off a little blocky and uneventful in way of color.

The Kindle’s strength is through its compatibility with Amazon.com, and your home computer or laptop. You are able to purchase your e-book either through your computer and you can purchase a variety of books directly through your Kindle. Kindle also has a text-to speech capability.

What To Wear There is a growing corporate trend of casual attire at the office, but depending on the company, formal dress might be expected. It is better to error on the side of being too dressed up than to appear too casual. Regardless of your wonderful skills, the first impression is often largely comprised of physical judgment. You want to look clean and professional, and dress for the part. Don’t be afraid to call ahead to the front desk and inquire about the level of formality that is the norm. When in doubt, wear black. Don’t try to make a dramatic statement about your personality with your clothes. This can be distracting during the interview. You want the focus to be on your qualifications, not your bright orange jacket. Individual quirkiness in your wardrobe can be showcased once you’re receiving a regular paycheck. 30

Be prepared, and make sure you have a clean and ironed outfit. You might want to invest in a Tide ToGo stain remover pen just in case you spill coffee or a pen explodes on the way to the interview. Better to be safe than sorry! Make sure your perfume or cologne is subtle. Some people have severe allergies to certain scents, and giving your interviewer a headache probably won’t end well. A little goes a long way, and when in doubt- stick to just soap and deodorant. Don’t chew gum. It is both unprofessional and distracting. Bad breath is also distracting, so make sure your teeth have been recently brushed, or pop a breath mint prior to any face-to-face encounters with your potential employer.

Girls. Unless your hair is short, pull it back. Long hair can appear too casual unless it is styled professionally. Make sure your makeup is conservative, as well as your accessories. Try to have either bare or freshly painted nails. Chipped polish isn’t cute. Neither is cleavage, or too much skin exposure. Wear tights if you are wearing a skirt, and bring an extra backup pair in case they get a snag before you arrive. Keep it classy! Heels should be short, and you should be able to walk in them smoothly. Save your 5” heels for the weekend.

Guys. Wear an undershirt, and button all your buttons. This is not the time to look like Enrique and show off your gloriously manly chest hair, bro. I know most of you are colorblind and this next part will make no sense, but allow me to explain the concept of matching. Ready? Ok here it is: Your shoes should be the same color as your belt. The exact shade isn’t extremely important, but black and brown don’t mix. And finally, XYZ…examine your zipper! Don’t embarrass yourself with an open fly.

Common Questions To Anticipate • What is your biggest strength? • What is your biggest flaw? • Do you work best in a team, or by yourself? • What relevant experience do you have? • What interests you specifically in this organization or job opportunity? • What sets you apart from other applicants? • Where do you see yourself in five years? • How much do you expect to make? • How flexible are you with work hours? • Do you have reliable transportation? • Have you ever been fired from a job? • What challenges have you had to overcome in a work environment? • Are you comfortable answering phones?

context. Make sure to reference any unique experiences you have had, such as studying abroad or internships. These stories will make you stand out in their memory later. Prepare a few questions to ask your interviewer about the culture and functions of the company. Look up your interviewer on LinkedIn, Google, etc. Try to find some common interests that will grab

32

their attention, and reference their accomplishments

What Not To Say Keep it interesting and relevant. Though some people are graduating without a ton of impressive experiences, avoid filling gaps with “fluff.” Nobody cares that you were a cheerleader in high school or played intramural ultimate Frisbee. If you feel like you don’t have enough to say about your past, try to focus the conversation on your goals for the future.

1. Never use profanity, slang, or questionably offensive language. Follow their lead regarding the vernacular, but be eloquent rather than casual to show that you respect the opportunity.

2. Don’t talk too fast. This is a dead giveaway that you are nervous. where appropriate. Stroking their ego (without being deliberately corny) will reflect your research and interest in their experience, and deflect from the lack of yours. Social Media Preparation Either cleanse your Facebook page of all questionable pictures and statuses, or make sure your profile is completely private before you even apply. Lots of employers have made decisions based on creeping on your social media pages. Remember that your friends can write and tag you in incriminating things at their discretion, so consider fully blocking your profile to the public, and only add people who you know in real life. Fake profiles used exclusively for snooping are an issue. It’s creepy and scary, but it’s definitely happening.

3. Avoid the use of verbal fillers, such as “um”, “like”, and “sooooo.” These are second nature for many of us, and it takes practice to become conscious of the amount we use them and to be able to control the tendency.

4. Don’t bring up anything that you’re not comfortable explaining in detail. If you say you have experience in something, but it wasn’t extensive enough to elaborate upon, then don’t go there.

5. Don’t lie! If you get caught making up credentials, you leave no chance for success.

6. Never speak negatively of past employers. You may use difficult situations as examples of your problem-solving skills, but don’t bash an old job…no matter how lame it really was. 33

How To Calm Your Nerves Different people have their own stress triggers, and their own personalized techniques for dealing with them. These are some general tips to help yourself relax and put your best, most confident foot forward. Breathing exercises can regulate your pulse, ease the shakes, and calm your thoughts. Try to focus on what’s happening in your body, and move through each area with a purposeful intent to unwind. Flex and contract your muscles slowly and methodically, and remind yourself that you have control over your body and that adrenaline can be channeled for productivity rather than stress. Breathe in, breathe out, and count backwards from ten while picturing a relaxing situation. Remind yourself that this is not the end of the world, and your success or failure in life doesn’t ride on this single opportunity. Your interviewer is not a mind reader. Even if you feel anxious, it is not necessarily being outwardly portrayed. Fake it ‘til you make it, and if you can get through the first few minutes you should be able to find your stride and be smooth through the end. If you do get caught off guard, smile and keep going. Don’t be afraid to ask them to repeat a question, and take your time to formulate a thoughtful response. Try to keep your pauses under 30 seconds so they are profound, rather than awkward. Ideally, you won’t get caught off guard, but to ensure this you should devote the time beforehand to utilize campus resources such 34

as career centers or professors that can practice mock interviews with you. Check all of your materials with a campus writing center, so that you feel confident in all your presentation documents. Drive to the location the day before so you don’t get lost on your big day. Keep in mind that depending on the location, finding parking could be a time-consuming issue. Check radio traffic reports to gauge anticipated transit time, and give yourself a buffer so that you won’t be in a rush. Remember that on time is considered late, and at least 15 minutes early is on-time. While you wait for your appointment, practice meditation and the aforementioned breathing exercises. Exiting Everyone says the first impression is the most important, but your closing strategy is the last thing your interviewer will have in his or her mind. Try not to shuffle out of the room like Napoleon Dynamite. A confident conclusion can make up for a rocky start. Maintain eye contact while giving them a firm handshake and thanking them for their time. Prompt them to feel free to contact you if they would like any further information before making a decision. Smile and tell them to have a good day, and make sure to be polite and friendly to everyone else you encounter in the office as well. You never know who is important or who might have an indirect influence on the decision. Once you are safely off the premises, feel free to jump up and down, squeal, and pat yourself on the back for surviving your interroga...I mean-interview!

Getting ready to graduate and move on to the next step of your life, leaves one question, where are you going to go? Back to mom and dad’s? A few places in the US have seemed to rise where others have fallen due to a hard economy. Atlanta, Georgia, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Austin, Texas and Minneapolis, Minnesoda are the top four places for new graduates to start their lives. Unfortunately for some of you New York didn’t make it on the list when it comes to starting a life with easy job opportunities and low rent rates. The average rent for a Manhattan studio apartment is more than $2,400, not exactly a reasonable living expense fresh out of college with loans to pay off. 36

Photo Courtsey of wikipedia.org

Atlanta, Georgia

Atlanta’s job market is growing exponentially. It is center of the health care industry and even in the deepest part of the recession, employment in the city’s health care sector increased 2.7 percent. Atlanta is home to Mint.com’s list of cities with the most job growth. Rent for a one bedroom averages $742 and two bedrooms $850 according to apartmentratings.com. For the residents of Atlanta there is plenty to do when not working, going to an All-American baseball game at Turner Field. You can even explore a bit of history with either the Breman Jewish Heritage & Holocaust Museum or the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site. The creation of 42,500 new jobs in Atlanta, according to a new economic forecast is good news for new graduates. 37

Photo Courtsey of tripadvisor.com

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Pittsburgh has escaped the recession relatively unscathed and is moving forward in many areas. Bustling education and health care sectors, the city is also generous with arts initiatives. Pittsburgh is looking promising since rent has gone down by almost $100, a one bedroom apartment around $778 or a two bedroom around $875.

38

Austin, Texas

Beyond being the live musical capital of the world, Austin is booming their technology and film industries. Rents are cheap, the weather is warm and it is predicts a 47.8 percent increase in jobs by 2030. For a one bedroom in Austin, $883 and $1143 for two bedroom. If you do end up in Austin be careful what you eat during your lunch break at your new job because it is also rated number 10 on the top obese cities in America. Denver’s known for its parks, which may be part of why it has ranked first on Pew Research’s list of most desirable places to live for college graduates 24-30 years old. The city expects huge long-term growth and, despite the recession, its job market is expanding at rate of 2.54 percent per year. Denver is in between when comes to rental rates, one bedroom is low around $750 but a two bedroom is a bit higher averaging around $934.

39

Minneapolis, Minnesota Minneapolis is a champion of small business growth for those graduates who want to start their ideas in the business world on their own. Going green is a big trend among cities and the people of Minneapolis are going green by improving water quality throughout the area, installing solar energy projects through the city, and planting more trees. When it comes to being living in Minneapolis the rent is the highest of the top five cities listed, costing $900 for a one bedroom and $1022 for a two bedroom. Home to the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis has been called one of America’s most literate cities and has one of the largest populations of bicyclists in the country, even when the mercury dips below zero.

Straight Talk. An amusing, straight-forward way to get answers to your toughest questions. E-mail your questions to CWUPulse@gmail.com! I can’t stop stalking my failed friendships and relationships via Facebook. How do I hang on to my Facebook while kicking this obsessive habit? Let’s face it, we all do it. Even I have been prone to some intensely creepy Facebook stalking. At the beginning, you convince yourself that the daily visit to his or her profile is simply because their status update presented itself to you on your “News Feed”. Honey, this is simply not the case. When he hasn’t posted a status update in close to a month and his profile picture is still of him and his high school prom date, you know that’s a bit of a reach. With social media taking the world by storm, the most newsworthy gossip in the lives of those in their teens or early twenties comes straight from their Facebook page, and stalking has never been easier. In the olden days, those desperate for the location of their ex-best friend or scorned lover would hang up after the first hello, drive by their house at night or keep in touch with old friends, waiting for the opportunity to slip in a “What’s Bob been up to these days?” Well, fear no more. For every Facebook friendship you add to your list of “friends” you are accessing information regarding their major, the last fight they had with a significant other, or even pictures of their latest drunken escapade. How do you keep this potentially unhealthy habit in check? Here are some tips:

1. If you have recently gotten out of a relationship, you need to either block, delete or hide this person from your news feed. No, this isn’t dramatic. I am thinking about your emotional health here. From my personal experience, and the experiences of my best girlfriends, scorned ex’s tend to become extremely

Facebook active in the aftermath of a breakup. They will be adding people of the opposite sex, getting tagged in pictures from nights out on the town, and making status updates about their every move. This is what I like to call personal torture. You need to block it out, but that doesn’t mean you need to delete your own page all together. Why should you suffer because your ex is trying to get your goat? Once you have spent a significant time alone with your thoughts and once again feel comfortable with being friends, you can approach the topic of a possible Facebook friendship.

2. Let’s get real here. Sometimes people that were once two peas in a pod become sworn enemies. This often means that you have friends in common, share a major or possibly even an apartment together. Then something goes disastrously wrong and you both are angry as hell, and not willing to make compromises with the similarities you share. So you stalk their Facebook to make sure they won’t be at the next party, the next meeting or the next girls night you wish to attend because DAMMIT, THEY’RE MY FRIENDS NOT YOURS! Basically, if you want to move on from the imploded friendship in a cool and collected manner, you’re going to need to live your life for YOU. Delete them from your friends list, hide their status updates, and stop fuming behind your computer screen. Severing ties with a close friend is like a divorce; there will be things and people neither of you will be willing to give up, but compromises will have to be made. When you constantly know their whereabouts, you will find yourself avoiding social gatherings and places you love just on the off chance they might be there. This isn’t fair to you, because at the end of the day, you’re the one who suffers. 43

How do I keep my independence when I’m in a relationship? Something I have noticed about new relationships is this: when you first start dating, everything is completely magical. Food tastes better, colors are brighter and you’re constantly discovering new things about this special person that make you just want to learn more. At first, this person is God’s gift to earth and you want to hang out with them all.the.time. It’s a two way street, when the guy is just as enamored as you are, and more often than not, even more so. Unfortunately, it is usually at this point, once the magic of new love has worn off, that the guy is the first to bring this budding romance to a screeching halt, claiming that things are moving much too fast, leaving you more confused than ever. I mean, you were on the same page….right? When you’re in a relationship, it’s important to preserve yourself. Dating someone doesn’t mean you are one entity, body and soul. It means you are two people sharing your lives together. Two people who have different friends, hobbies, careers, etc. When you compromise your interests, you’re compromising the you that makes you, you and the you your partner fell in love with in the first place. Just because you’re in a relationship doesn’t mean you can’t have a life, and you should uphold and continue the hobbies and commitments that you made going into the relationship. In my opinion, the perfect relationship is one where both individuals trust each other enough to spend time both together and apart, with separate groups of people. Keep your independence by staying true to the person you are with or without the person by your side.

How do I lose weight and stay fit without withering away? I have been noticing lately that there has been a bit of a bobble head effect when it comes to some girls on campus. As in, their heads look huge in comparison to their unnaturally thin physique. Although being thin and toned is something to strive for and be proud of, I feel like there are a few girls I know who I want to run up to and say, “just gain 10 pounds and you will look so much healthier!” Many people’s weight will fluctuate in times of emotional turmoil or stress, like during a breakup or the weeks prior to finals. Some will overeat while others will become gym rats, working themselves to the bone until they have physically exerted themselves so far past their comfort level they are actually getting nauseous and throwing up. So, here’s the deal. Eat a couple square meals a day, pack some healthy snacks in your backpack, and indulge in a glass of wine and some chocolate, for Christ’s sake! If you want to work out every day, I admire your drive. Three times a week? Swell. It’s not my place to say when and how much, all I care about is that you are healthy and happy without running yourself into the grave. Capeesch?

Fitness Misconceptions Exercise, Nutrition, Stress

48

In the age of the Shake Weight, P90X, and Slim Fast, it is difficult to tell what really works and what is just a fad when it comes to health and fitness. In a society driven by a desire for instant gratification, the developing popularity of fad diets, supplements, self diagnosis via Web MD, and alternative medicine has created a breeding ground for misconceptions about health in general. Some of the most contagious mistaken beliefs happen to be related to exercise, nutrition, and stress. Exercise and nutrition misconceptions are possibly the most commonly encountered today. In a world where the “ideal physical appearance is represented by PhotoShopped swimsuit models, people of all ages are constantly looking for the newest workout and the best exercise secret. What the majority of the public does not realize is that a lot of generally accepted ideas about fitness are false. 49

O

Exercise

ne of the biggest fitness misunderstandings is

that doing crunches and other abdominal exercises will eliminate fat on the stomach and result in a six-pack. A lot of people can save themselves time and frustration if they understand that you can work hard on abs and get a six-pack, but the only way you will ever see your abs is if you lose the fat on the surface of the stomach first. The most effective way to lose fat on the stomach, or anywhere else, is to practice challenging cardio frequently and start a nutrition plan. Running for 20 to 30 minutes a day and cutting down on fatty foods will do wonders to help reveal your abs. It is common for people to practice the same exercise routine every time that they work out. While this may seem like a good idea, working out the same muscles in

period of time, you begin to over train your muscles, which will decrease your overall results. According to bodybuilding.com, working out for too long triggers your body to release cortisol; a hormone that increases body-fat storage and destroys muscle. It is important to remember to limit workouts to about an hour, while keeping them challenging. “No Pain, No Gain.” It is probably safe to say that everyone has heard this saying at one time or another. However, this widely accepted exercise tip is completely wrong. What many people don’t realize is that there is a major difference between pain and soreness. It is important to understand this in order to prevent over training to the point of injury.

The Art of Mobile Photography By Chris Christensen

Digital photography has come a long way. With today’s smartphones featuring high-end digital cameras built right in, many are turning to apps to make photos more creative and artsy.

Whether using an iPhone, Android or Blackberry, each smartphone has its own “app store” containing numerous photography apps that can alter your digital photos in many different ways. With these photography apps, you can enhance your smartphone’s photography capabilities. More and more people are using their mobile cameras instead of actual digital cameras. Apps now enhance images, just like what Photoshop can do to photos on your Mac or PC. Speaking of Photoshop, there is now a free Photoshop Express app available for iPhone and Android smartphones. Photoshop is one of the most well known photo editing software available for computers and now it is available for mobile phones. Once you have edited your photos, there is a tool to quickly share those photos on Facebook or Twitter. Photoshop is definitely a great photo editing app, but there are also apps that add effects to photos.
