PILATES FOR BEGINNERS Pilates Fitness Institute’s introductory courses (with choice of either Matwork, Reformer or Barre Attack) will introduce you to pilates technique in an intimate, safe and enjoyable group setting. During your lessons you will gradually build your strength and flexibility. The improvement you will feel in a short amount of time is truly amazing! Matwork Pilates classes are conducted on the mat, utilising your own body weight and small apparatus for resistance. Reformer Pilates uses machines called reformers that use springs and pulleys to provide variable resistance to assist and challenge the body. Barre Attack is a dynamic fusion of pilates, ballet and fitness, using the principles of pilates and the classic ballet barre to create lean toning results (just like a dancer’s body!) and provide low impact but intensive cardiovascular benefits.

POPPING CLASSES (STREET DANCE) – FREE! Popping is a street dance that originated in California during the 1960s – 70s, and is one of the original dance styles within the funk genre. The technique of popping is described as the contraction and release of muscles to the beat and rhythm of music, however there are many other foundational moves and poses that create the style, including “waving”,” robot” and “tutting”. Even the moonwalk immortalised by Michael Jackson was based on floating and gliding techniques which originated from the popping style! Head instructor Prasadi’s weekly classes aim to teach students the basic foundations of popping, so that they can go on to develop their own style and build the confidence to freestyle/ improvise based on what they have learnt. She is passionate about expanding the popping and funk-style community in Perth, and is eager to introduce newcomers to local events such as street dance battles, jams/training sessions, showcases and competitions.

SWIM AND SURVIVE (INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS) Did you know that Curtin has the largest cohort of international students of any uni in WA? And whilst swimming, fishing, boating and water sports are a big part of the Australian way of life, we know that a large number of international students come from countries where water safety programs and swimming classes are not quite so widespread. To address this, the Royal Life Saving Society of WA (RLSSWA) offers a number of Swim & Survive programs to Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CaLD) groups in WA, aimed at making sure you stay safe whilst enjoying the awesome array of water activities that Perth has to offer - from relaxing in a friend’s swimming pool, to frolicking at one of our many gorgeous beaches!
