THlS will be the last Chair's Report that I shall be writing for the Courier. At Culter Community Council's October meeting (which was the AGM) I handed over the reins into the capable hands of James Farquhar. I am not retiring from the Community Council and will continue to look after planning matters. However, before I review the work of the past year, I wish to thank everyone who has served on the community council over the past few years for their support and hard work. I like to think we have worked together as a team to do the best we could for Culter and I thank you all for that. In the year since the last AGM, the members of Culter Community Council (CCC) have seen the results of some of their previous hard work come to fruition: l j The building of the Sheltered Housing at Coronation Court is well under way. Having managed to persuade the City Planners developing the Local Plan that Coronation Court was the better site the money was allocated and the building

3) James Farquhar co-ordinated all the work required (fund-raising, purchasing, modifying lampposts and. finally, storage) to bring us the new Christmas Lights which brightened and cheered up Culter last winter. He has continued these efTorts to add to the number of displays and, as last year, has organised another 'switchon' evening in the Village Hall for the end of November.

4) Anne Russell, with input from Lower Deeside Rotary Club, has updated the Culter Directory of relevant telephone numbers and e-mail contacts not only for local shops and businesses, clubs, organisations and groups but also for the Health and Sport facilities, Aberdeen City Council Departments, Councillors, MPS, and MSPs. It is important that the entries are kept as up to date as possible if they are to be useful. In the last Community Council year, the members of CCC have also been involved in a number of consultations. Each issue was discussed by the committee. worked on further by sub groups, then approved by the committee (by e-mail) before sending to the relevant body: a) Statutory Guidance on Planning & Sustainable Development: these will become part of the planning act where developers will have to take on board matters such as transportlaccessibility; effects on the environment; flooding possibilities; energy efficiency and waste management as well as the more obvious points such as design, building materials, insulation and open public spaces.

It was encouraging to find the guidance s o clear, positive and wide-ranging and wc found we had only nine comrnents to make - mainly to make some o f the guidance stronger and to ensure public consultation and engagement happened early i.e. while plans were still at the 'ideas' stage and not firm plans. The tinal version is expected at the end of 2007 or early 2008. b) New Structure Plan for North East Scotland: a first consultation paper to find out where new development in Aberdeen City a n d Aberdeenshire could and should- take place over tlie next 2.5 years, w a s c o m l n c n t c d on b y C C C . A n n Wakefield and I later attended a workshop for the Community Councils of South Aberdeen to see maps o f these suggestions and to comment further. All these ideas and comments from business a n d c o m m e r c i a l interests, transport officers for the North East. SNH, SEPA, as well as developers and communities will be presented to the Councils and, with their approval, will be turned into a draft plan ready for formal consultation. At the same tirne, consultation will g o ahead with the infrastructure providers (water, sewage. gas electricity. roads, rail etc.) to ensure everything can be co-ordinated as and when required. The intention is to make sure the Draft Plan is feasible and workable before it is produced. -

It is important that we participated, and continue to participate, in this cxercise because what is decided for the Structure Plan will dictate ~ v h ahappens t in the next Aberdeen Local Plan. c) Local Transport Strategy 2007-2012: This consultation covered more than our very local interest in, for example the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route (AWPR). It included the Cross-Rail Link from Inverurie to Laurencekirk, congestion at the Bridge of Dee, the Haudagain Roundabout, third Don crossing, reduction it1 car use bus services, school-tlme traffic and the pedestrianisation of Union Street. We answered, of course, with the benefits for, and effects on, Culter in mind. l

d ) AWPR: Needless t o say, w e have

continucd to m e e t with the AWPR engineers and attended exhibitions to put across our concerns for the design of the North Deeside Road Junction with the AWPR, mainly on two points: i. The use of traffic lights which may well cauqe traffic tailbacks into Culter at commuting times; ii. The closure of the eastern halfof Culter House Road to traffic and giving the western half access onto the slip road close to the AWPR Round-about north of Kippie and the present International School. Our concern is that developers will l o o k on this a s an e n t r y f o r development along Culter House Road.

Points of Important Information Received i) A n n , M a r j o r y a n d I a t t e n d e d a presentation updating community organisations on the building of the new Cults Academy. It appears that tlie building is about 3 m o n t h s behind schedule but a start has been made on the foundations. It was hoped that the new school would still be ready for the start of the news school year in August 2009. ii) The Scottish Government has now given permission to Aberdeen City Council to stop the sale of council houses in many areas of the city (including Culter) for a period of 5 years. However those sales already applied for will not be halted. In conclusion, I would like to thank all the members of the Committee not only for their hard work and support over the last year but also for their enthusiastic participation in and sometimes running other groups which have sprung up through our Neighbourhood Community Plan (Paths Group, Culter in Bloo111, Christmas Lights) as well as our Long Running Courier And Gala Committees and Planning and Transport sub-groups.

I also appreciated the regular attendance at our meetings of the Police and our City Councillors. T h e two-way flow of information at these meetings allowed us all to keep abreast of important matters

T H E Chair's Report has covered the work of Culter Community Council during the past year and the individuals1 groups who have helped to make Culter a better place in which to live. It is good to see that Culter still has a 'village' feeling although it is part ofAberdeen City. This aspect is clear when you attend any Cof'fee Mornings, Fayres, Sales of Work etc. because residents of every age turn up to almost all ofthese whether it be Toddlers, OAPs, church or school.

At CCC's Annual General Meeting on Thursday 25th October 2007, the following officials were appointed: Chairman - James Farquhar Vice Chairs Lavina Massie and Douglas Stewart Secretary - Marjory Skinner Minute Secretary - Catherine Lacy Treasurer Nicola Hector -

As you will notice, Lavina has stepped down as Chair but has agreed to share the post of Vice-chair with Doug Stewart. James has served as Minute Secretary and now takes over as Chair. We were very fortunate to have Lavina as Chair for so long as she is involved with so many 'high-profile' committees. It was a relief, too, that Nicola agreed to continue as treasurer as the pressure on her has intensified over the years. Members of CCC were disappointed to hear of the resignations of three members: Judith Dack, Anne Watson and Susan Chappell-Smith. We thank them for the time they spent serving the people of Culter as community councillors but we know they are still busy with all sorts of activities in the village. Because of these resignations, our numbers are depleted very much and we need four people to join us -and quickly. Several Community Councils in Aberdeen have gone out of existence due to lack of people willing to commit for a few hours each month.

On a personal note, I wish to thank all the members o f C C C , a n d o u r City CounciIlors, for their attendance at meetings and the support they give. (Minutes of all meetings of CCC can be seen at Culter Library.) Marjory J Skinner

COUNCILLOR MARIE BOULTON NOW into my sixth month of office I am beginning to find my way around the Town House and who to ask for what. Many requests for investigations into road safety across the ward have been initiated by me after several concerns were raised by constituents. The necessary surveys will be carried out by t h e roads department and I am aiming to give an update, in the next Culter Courier but prior to that, directly to those of you who contacted me on particular issues. Anti-social behaviour and vandalism is still rearing its ugly head in our area. I have met with the police on specific items but also on tackling the problem generally. We, as members of the community, must help the police by reporting at the time, any incident that occurs and they will take the appropriate action. Parenting in our ward is generally very good but we, as parents, have an individual responsibility to others in the community to ensure our children conduct themselves in a manner which doesn't affect the quality of lives of others. However, in the same vane and as a community, we should be tolerant of children and allow them to be children, play and have fun. I am acutely aware ofthe lack of facilities for children and youths i n o u r communities and, working with other services, we hope to start to change the situation for the better. You may have noticed that the children's play park at the corner of Coronation Road and School Road has started to change. Play equipment has started to be removed to make way for new and I am awaiting confirmation of a completion date. I hope this will take place in the very near future.

A meeting together with the police, took place at the Village Hall on Monday 8th October, after inany people raised a range of issues, amongst them concerns about drugs in the area. The police have reacted in a very positive manner to help tackle, and hopefully resolve, the conlmunity's concerns. Amongst the agreed actions were to man the Culter Station more effectively and to hold regular surgeries with the community. As I mentioned earlier in my article, the police can't solve problems alone; we must be their eyes and ears and report things as and when they are happening and the police will do all possible to attend. Finally, many of you will have noticed that some of your recycling has not been collected and you were left notices explaining why. All recycling must be in the council's bags! containers otherwise, it will not be collected. Additional containers are available for larger families (five people

or more) and requests can be made by calling 0845 6080919. Requests for additional containers will be passed to Cornmunity Waste Workers who will visit householders to look at ways to assist the household to reduce waste. The Council's focus remains to concentrate on the reduction of waste, rather than simply encouraging the use of [nore containers. Additionally though, I feel we must find ways to put the manufacturers!retailers under increased pressure, to play a role in reducing packaging etc. I hope this brief overview of just sonie of the things on which I'm working and how we hope to improve things within our area, will assure you o f my continued commitment and acknowledgement of your views. COUNCILLOR AILEEN MALONE Raised Kerbs. Residents have contacted me about difficulties they were experiencing with public transport. I am pleased to report that my request for 'raised kerbs' at various bus stops in the Culter area has been granted. There will also be improveinents to bus stops alongNorth Deeside Road right into town. Please let me know of any upgrades that are needed and I will do what I can to help with individual queries. Decent public transport facilities are important for elderly folk. Younger people, including those at school, also need a good affordable bus service.

Bus Timetables Some people raised concerns regarding the bus timetable information at bus stops in the Culter area. Some timetable panels

were missing. I informed the Council and asked for accurate and up-to-date bus timetables information. 1 am pleased that new information panels were agreed. These will be used by the bus companies to display timetable details. 1 hope you tind this helpful.

Upcorning Police Surgeries Grampian Police will be running a trial period of 'surgeries' in Culter. These are to give local people an additional way of discussing concerns and safety issues. The first meeting took place on 22nd October in t h e Village Hall. The dates of subsequent meetings will be advertised in due course. The police surgeries are a helpful opportunity for you to highlight the policing issues that matter to you. Lights Several street lights have been having 'switching' problems throughout Culter. The faulty lights have been causing real inconvenience. Street lights have been put on a test setting for 24 hours a day. Faulty units will be replaced where possible. With the darker nights approaching, adequate light levels are vital. Please let me know of any problems and 1 will try to help.

1 do hope you all have a lovely Christmas and New Year and, in the meantime, if you need to get in touch with me regarding any issues or queries you may have, please contact me at.. .

PLANNING (A)

Weekly Lists

Since the last Planning Report in the Courier, there have been two planning applications to which CCC felt it had to object: l . 197 North Deeside Road This application is s e e k i n g its replacement with a very much larger new house plus a studio/house+- with parking and access from Station Road West. CCC's objections were: * the size of the new house if a second building within the grounds w a s permitted; * the proposed aluminium roof instead of a slate or tiled one; * a larger house including the proposed studio would be acceptable; * if the studioihouse was to be permitted its design should at least blend in with those already present in Station Road West. 2. Baads Farm, Anguston Outline planning permission is being sought for a dog-boarding kennels and residential farm in . one o f t h e fields. CCC objected because of: * the narrow road; * the increased traffic; * the infringement of Green Belt and * the noise associated with kennels affecting the neighbours. There were three applications o f community interest to which CCC did not object. 3. Bowling Club, Cairn Road: The upgrading of the Club premises and Hall renovation was not objected to as most of the changesiimprovements were internal to the existing building. 4. Borsalinoiand Take Away has applied to make changes to the entrance steps and frontage of the Take Away with a small

(R) Local Plan: Marjory Skinner, Ann Waketield and 1 attended the Public Local lnquiry when it was dealing with objections relating to Culter. I presented CCC's case to have Sheltered Housing at Coronation Court and. along with Aberdeen City Council's Planners, opposed the case presented by a private developer to have these built on the Hill of Ardbeck. 1 also presented CCC's case for a Business Park in Culter and was opposed in this by the City Planners and a Town Planner representing the 57 residents opposed to it being sited at the junction of Malcolm Road and Shoddy Road.

The Reporters eventually came back with their recommendations on all 7,000 objections to the Local Plan at the end of August. Within that:

* they formally accepted and recommended the Sheltered Housing at Coronation Road should continue but none should be built on the Hill of Ardbeck. they also recommended that:

* the Business Park should be refused * all the proposals for housing in the Green Belt should be refused including: - to the west of Culter along Malcolm Road, including Rob Roy Caravan Park; - to the east of Culter on Pittengullies Brae including on the bank of the Dee; - behind Camphill and - on North Deeside Road around Milltimber Brae. Aberdeen City Council will study all recommendations and decide if they will accept them. If there are any they will not accept, these will be put out for public

ROAD AND PATHS NEWS THE AWPR is going to become very interesting. The Scottish Government has announced that it will be the subject of a Public Inquiry next year, when Transport Scotland will try to justify their bizarre choice of route with its huge cost, limited traffic benefits and massive environmental damage.

Less contentious is the restoration of correct signing for the 45 minute waiting restrictions at and opposite the supermarkets on North Deeside Road. This should become a happy hunting ground for traffic wardens. You have been warned. The Culter Explorer leaflet has been well received, with noticeably more walkers leaving the safety of Culter's suburbs to venture into the countryside. Members of the

plan the core path network in Aberdeen, so the link between city and Aberdeenshire is important. There was general agreement that the Deeside Way should be tarred as far as Culter station. then probably remain unsurfaced, as it is within the county. The main concerns which we expressed were the unsuitability of the path immediately west of Culter for less mobile users, and its inadequate signing. We are hopeful that these issues will be addressed.

Doug Stewart

We constantly t ~ to y improve the service we provide to the community and at present are aware that routine waiting times t o s e e a G P are sometimes unsatisfactorily long. Ways to address this are currently under discussion. One method to improve access, which we are trialling with some of the doctors at the moment, is the use of telephone consultations, part of a national collaborative looking at improving access to primary care services. Rather than being a 'second-rate' interaction with the GP, the telephone consultation can be a more efficient way of using time for both patient and doctor, as long as the problem can be appropriately dealt with in this way. Problems requiring any kind of examination or more in-depth discussion are likely t o need a face-to-face interaction. You may therefore be offered this as an option when making a n appointment and the staff will help you decide if this is appropriate. As ever we would appreciate your feedback on this issue. The annual publicity on the 'flu vaccination programme has been under way for quite a while now, and our 'flu vaccination clinics have been well attended, with the weekend slots again proving popular. We have completed our internal redecoration works and are very pleased with the result - the work took place during weekends and evenings to avoid disruption. The health centre has a new fresh appearance with our change of colour scheme in the waiting areas and corridors; the consulting rooms have also been revitalised. Best wishes.

Dr Douglas Harris

COURIER I AM indebted to Albert Moir for a little bit of history. Culter Courier celebrates its 30th birthday with this issue (the first was October/November 1977). To begin with, it was completely done by hand including cut and paste (no computers then!) -with few pages and at irregular intervals. It has come a long way since then and, over the ycars, many people have taken part in making sure that it brought news of what is going on in Culter. ( I miss the cartoons that were always included. Anyone care to volunteer to do this?)

WE'FTEcompleted the autumn replant of our 108 containers - y e s 108 - with polyanthus, pansies, bellis (ornamental daisy) and some dwarf golden cypresses. You may have noticed a striking new planter on Malcolm Road - four tiers in summer but only one in winter - this was a gift from Aberdeen City Council. Malcolm Road and Coronation Park will be the main targets for our quota of bulbs this autumn to help brighten up Spring 2008 when it comes round, but other ideas -and helpers - are always very welcome! 3 19 North Deeside Road PETERCULTER AB14 OUL

Awards After a visit by judges from Beautiful Scotland in August we were pleased to receive our third Merit classification for Culter, but a big surprise was winning Aberdecn City Council's new Eco-City classification 'Improving the Urban Environment' for our work on the Coronation Park path, bridge, tree planting and litter clearance project. This pro-ject was also assessed as the Gold Award winner from all the classifications this year, and your photo shows a surprised Erik Stien receiving the certificates at the Aberdeen Blooms Show in the Duthie Park. It's important to note that the reason for the top award was the involvement of the greatest number of people "taking ownership of their own environment and working together" to quote Jim McColl - so a big thank you to all concerned too many to mention herc!

257 North Deeside Road, Peterculter Telephone: 733100 CULTER CHRISTMAS LIGHTS CULTER Community Council is looking to brighten up the village of Peterculter over the 2007 festive period by increasing the number of Christ~nasLight Features from our excellent 2006 Display. With this being the second year of our Christmas Lights Project, it is our intention to have additional Lighting Features installed on the village street lampposts to fill the gap between last year's display. In 2006 we had S features located at the east end of the Village and 10 features located from the Richmond Arms to the Barbers Pole. Fundraising is already underway and we currently have raised some money for several new Features. We have set our sights on an additional target of 10 for the second year which will be difficult to achieve unless we receive your help. To undertake the Christmas Lights Project, Culter Colnmunity Council is looking for donations or sponsors (for individual features) through the

generosity o f local residents and businesses. The sponsorship of the existing features purchased last year is to cover the installation and removal costs. We are looking at a sponsorship figure of at least ÂŁ70 per feature. We will also be looking for donations in order that we can increase the number of features on display. We are also looking to celebrate with an official 'Switch On' ceremony which is planned in the Village Hall on Saturday 24th November 2007. We will have mulled wine and mince pies. the BB Centenary band playing Christmas Carols, Christmas Games and a visit from Santa. We will also have a Celebrity to undertake the 'Switch On'. It promises to be a great event. If you are willing to donate or sponsor a Lighting Feature contact: James Farquhar, Culter Community Council, 46 North Deeside Road, Peterculter. AT THE end of July, we enjoyed a favourite walk in Ballochbuie Forest, the highlight of the walk being the Falls o f Garbh Allt. It was an overcast day, good temperature for walking but also perfect weather for our Scottish midges. Lunch was a hasty affair with some swapping of tried and tested midge repellents! Our next walk took us up the Brown and White Caterthuns near Little Brechin, followed by our annual Summer Lunch, this time at Brechin Castle Centre. Two more walks in August found us first in Glen Tanar, walking north from the car park, and then we walked from Ranchory taking either the river path or the disused railway line to Drumoak. Next we had a pleasant day for the Upper Denburn Walk, starting at Dobbies Garden centre and returning there at the end of the walk through Hazlehead Park. By unanimous decision we had a coffee stop at the garden centre both before and after the walk! In October we enjoyed one of those late glorious sunny days for the walk at Edzell and before the end of the year we have walks planned at Persley in Aberdeen, Fasque and Monyinusk and of course our Christmas Lunch. Information about our group can be obtained from Kate Thomson (phone no. 01330 81 1275). Ethel Taylor

CKTLTS CRSCKET CLKTB With the 2007 season now confined to the annals of history Cults Cricket Club can reflect on a successful season as both the 1st & 2nd Xls managed to pick up sil\,erware. The first XI completed the double of Grade O n e title and Aberdeenshire Cup for the third titne this decade adding to their double successes of 2003 & 2004. The 1 st team was one of the strongest XIS the club has put out in recent years with the bowling particularly strong with Narendera, Amol Sasena. Verindera and Masud all playing their part.

Masud won the Grade One bowling trophy thr the best average and this was richly deserved for an outstanding effort from the most iinproved player in the club. All rounder Narendera was another great asset as he bowled consistently well all season and specialised superbly with the bat in finishing off innings with some big hitting. The I st XI remained unbeaten

throughout the season with the only minus being our omission frorn the Small Clubs Cup due to a protest frorn Kintore regarding the eligibility of one of our players. We found this decision by the Scottish Cricket Union particularly hard to accept as i t was based purely on assumptions. The Aberdeenshire Cup final against Mannofield played at Mannofield was a hugely exciting contest. Cults batted first and ran up a sizeable total of 217 for 6 with Bryan Alexander (65), Graeme Gillanders (40) and Verindera (31) all contributing well on a superb batting track. Mannofield were always behind the clock in their reply but some big hitting in the lower order resulted in a tight finish as Cults squeezed home by 4 runs. The 2nd X1 finished a creditable 2nd in Grade Two earning them the right to be promoted to Grade One which they have accepted. This now means for the 2008 season Cults CC will have two XIS in Grade One. Eddie Spearman (323 runs) & Shir~azHussain (307 runs) performed

well with the bat and Ronnie Valentine (34 wkts), Neil Gillanders (27 wkts) & Bhushan (22 wkts) the mainstays with the ball. The 2nd XI also retained the Bon Accord Cup with a convincing victory over Queens Cross at Kellands Park, Inverurie. Great knocks from Phi1 Gill (79), Indy Pandit (44) and a blistering innings of 43no (including five 6s) from 17 year old Will Liversage saw Cults record a huge total of 222 in their 40 overs. Queens Cross never looked likely to chase down the total with Ronnie Valentine and Neil Gillanders sharing seven wickets. On a sadder note Bryan Alexander has decided to hang up his bat bringing the curtain down on a career spanning 4 decades ( 1 975-2007). In this time Bryan has hardly missed a game and has been a great servant to the club. With alnlost 20,000 runs scored, including a remarkable 28 centuries, there is no doubt that Bryan has been the top batsman in the Aberdeenshire Grades for most of his career. His match winning contributions are too numerous to mention and he will be a huge loss to the club.

Fittingly his last innings for the club against Mannofield in this year's 2007 cup final contributed heavily to Cults winning the game as did his first cup final innings in 1981 against Dyce where he also scored a tnatch winning fifty as an 18 year old. He is highly respected by both fellow team members and opposition alike and the 2008 will be a strange one with Bryan not facing the first ball of the innings for the first time in 27 years. We welcomed the Liversage hnlily into the club halfway through the season as they moved to Aberdeen from Lincolnshire. The two sons, Will and Henry. are very keen a n d talented cricketers and along with the support of their father Don they are making a big impact at the club. A special thanks must also go to Sarah Liversage for all her hard work in the kitchen preparing the teas during games and tidying up afterwards with the help of her daughter Amelia. Thanks a lot. As ever we will be recruiting players from now until the start of the 2008 season in April. If you would like to join please contact me on the following numbers:-

Monday: BoPeeps, 1-3 year olds. (baby siblings welcome too), with craft, painting and songs. Tuesday & F r i d a y : Toddlers for 0-3 year olds Each session is from 9:30am- 1 1 :30am. There are loads of toys and plenty of space for the young ones to let of steam. It's also a great opportunity for murns, dads and carers to meet up with each other for a coffee and a chat. Sharing your stories can be a great help when looking after your little ones as you soon realise you're not alone out there. We recently had a sponsored walk along thc railway line which we are hoping will have raised a few hundred pounds. Taking part in the walk was great fun and a real comrnunity spirit was created. Thanks to all who sponsored our walkers. Our nest update will be in the new year, so in the meantime all our best wishes for Christmas and 200X!

then please contact us. One of the ways in which you can do this locally is by completing a "Have Your Say" leaflet which are available from the Village Hall, Library & Sports Centre.

Adult Learning Another computing class was successfully completed at Culter School before the half term holiday and from the feedback it looks like we shall be planning another soon. One issue that was identified by some students was that of access to the computer suite . Unfortunately there are two flights of stairs that have to be negotiated so this should be considered by future students. However, we do offer similar courses at Cults library which does not have this problem so don't let this put you off attending one of our courses. We prefer to offer courses based on local demand so if you have any suggestions

We look forward to hearing from you soon as WC are planning our programme for the new year which is for those who are 16 years of age and upwards. cultsadultlearning@rmplc.co.uk

Work with Children and Young People There are a variety of funds available to promote work with children and young people and this does not necessarily need to involve adults so if you have any ideas that you would like to try or develop then get in touch. Current work involves a group of young people trying to promote a mountain bike initative. What would you like to do?

Culter YFC Training Facilities Project Culter Boys Club was fonned in 1983 and since then has grown into one o f the largest clubs in Aberdeen and the NorthEast of Scotland. Currently we have over 300 youngsters ranging from Under 5's, starting at Nursery age, right up to Under 19's and have teams competing at nearly every level, with two teams in some sections. To build on this success the Club has an ongoing project to create training areas and ultimately our own "Home" facilities. After extensive searching, C.A.S.T.L.E. The colours of the trees are breath-taking -no need to fly to the Americas when w e have beauty just out the road a wee bit. And we see it all on our rambles. The other week we went up Kerloch (534m). You go to Strachan, cross the Feugh, take a farm road towards Pitreadie Farm and that's when the fun begins. We have to go through a gate into a field where the cows are and it is frightening. They are so huge and very inquisitive but the men shooed them and we scuttled past. What a relief as we leave them behind to return to their grazing. The landscape is lovely and open and one of our walkers, John, informs us that it is a STRATH. There are three burns running into this area - "AN" I think means "Riher" and putting these two names together, through time, STRACH AN became the village we know today. We learn something new every day on our walks! It's quite a walk up to Kerloch but the views on this particular dry, clear, sunny, day. were stunning. Ron thought, because it was so fine a day, we should walk from the Hill through the woods and back looking down on the way we had come up. Through the farm with lots of old vehicles - some stuffed with sheep fleeces, dogs yelping, but the cows had moved on! Ten miles it was that day but what a glorious outing. Jean Duff

CWLTER FOOTBALL CLUB Hawick History. In a blaze oftelevision and press publicity, Culter inade history by becoming the first North Region Junior Football teain to play in The Scottish Cup. Culter's historic 1st Round inatch was favoured with a home draw against East of Scotland side Hawick Royal Albert on Saturday 29 September 2007. On a fine afternoon in front of a huge crowd at Crombie Park, witnessed by a Press posse and filmed by a Sky Sports Cameraman, we marked our debut with an amazing 7-0 victory.

BB Blow. We were bitterly disappointed when the local Boys' Brigade trailer containing their inarquee was stolen froin

Crombie Park overnight on Tuesday 25 September 2007. It had been delivered that morning on loan to us intended for use at our historic Scottish Cup Tie. Our padlock on the gate was cut and the clainp on the trailer was removed by the thieves to inake their getaway. The police are in\ estigating this most unfortunate theft. \.'ale Victory. Culter recorded another wonderful win with our second "Scottish" success on 27 October 2007 by beating Vale of Leithen 2- I at Crornbie Park with another large attendance and co\ ered by several Press Reporters plus the Sky Sports Cameraman. An unwanted draw seeined Imminent ~ i t hthe score at 1-1 but with only 4 ininutes left to play Grahain Cadger scored the winner to send the home teain and supportcrs ecstatic.

Global Greetings. Before and after our Vale of Leithen win we had good wishes and congratulations from far and near. September Sadness. We had a series of sad losses of Culter FC connected people in September. Our flag was flown at half mast and a minute's silence was observed before our home match on Saturday 22 September 2007 in memory of former Team Captain Fred Wright. former Team Managcr and 1 Ionorary Vice President Jim Birse and loyal supporter Kenny Mortimer. News followed later that May Stuart, daughtcr of the legendary Peter J Stuart and relative of Culter FC's devoted Davidson family, had passed away. Our condolcnces go to all families involved.

On a personal note I was astounded to receive an Email from Ian "Kip" McKenzie all the way from his workplace in Ycmen. Ian inforlned me that I was BBC London's "Fan of the Week". My photograph and "love affair with his local team" article on the BBC website told my Culter FC story from ballboy In the 1950s up to our historic Scottish Cup win against Hawick Royal Albert on 29th September 2007.

On the sixth day of Christmas - celebrate Christmas and New Year safely. The risk of accidents, especially in the kitchen, is greater after alcohol is consumed. On the seventh day of Christmas - most fires start in the kitchen, never leave cooking unattended. On the eighth day of Christmas - If you are planning to celebrate with fireworks, store them in a metal box, read the instructions, never go back t o a lit firework and keep a bucket of water nearby. On the ninth day of Christmas - make sure cigarettes are completely extinguished. On the tenth day of Christmas - check the battery in your smoke alarm every week and use Christmas as a reminder to clean it and remove dust.

Active Schools at Cults Academy We have been able to offer many sports during 2006-2007. Football and Netball continue to have the greatest number of participants. Rugby, basketball, dance, volleyball. badminton, swimming for beginners, gymnastics, tennis and table tennis have all been offered throughout the year. We have had many of our pupils involved with Cross Country running e.g. South Grampian Schools Cross Country Championships. There is also an enthusiastic group of p~lpilswho took part in the British Heart Foundation Golf Championship at Banchory Golf Club and we again ran a Cults Academy Golf Championship. "TIS THE SEASON TO BE CAREFULSS WITH another festive season just around the corner, it is a time t o be jolly. Unfortunately from a Fire Safety point of view, statistics show that people are 50% more likely to die in a house fire at this time, than any other during the year. This is because many of the items that we use to celebrate Christmas, such as fairy lights

candles, paper hats, and decorations, can all be fire hazards when not used correctly. The Government is launching a hard hitting Christmas Fire Safety Campaign "Tis the Season to be careful" that urges people to celebrate safely. This campaign is based around the 12 Days of Christmas. On the first day of Christmas- check that your Christmas tree lights conform to the British standard. Always use an RCD on outdoor electrical equipment (safety device that can save lives by instantly switching off the power.) On the second day of Christmas - never place candles near your Christmas tree or furnishings. Don't leave them burning unattended. On the third day of Christmas - make sure your family and visitors staying for the festive period know what to do in an emergency. Practise a fire escape plan. O n the fourth day of Christmas decorations can burn easily; don't attach them to lights or heaters. On the fifth day of Christmas - switch off electrical appliances when not in use, unless they are designed to stay on. Take special care with Christmas lights. Always switch ot'f and unplug Christmas

On the eleventh day of Christmas - keep candles, matches and lighters out of the reach of children. On the twelfth day of Christmas -take the time to check on elderly relatives and neighbours this Christmas, make sure they are safe. But remember Christmas is a time for fun and joy. so have a great time. From everyone at Grampian Fire and Rescue Service. "Merry Christmas and Be Safe"

CULTER VILLAGE HALL NEWS W E WOULD like to take this opportunity to remind residents of the village that Culter Village Hall receives no financial aid from Aberdeen City Council and we rely on the generosity of other groups and our own fund raising activities to maintain the standard of service and amenity we can offer to user groups. We endeavour to keep our rental charges as low as possible to benefit all community users, but this means we have nothing left over for repairs and upgrading.

This year we have received donations from members of the community and we have also received a cheque for ÂŁ1,000 from Nadine Taylor, who organised a h n d raiser at Culter Mill Club. Our grateful thanks g o to Nadine and all w h o supported her on behalf of the hall.

The hall will be closed for Christmas from Friday 21st Dec to Friday 4th San inclusive. Anyone who needs to contact the hall during that period may leave a message on the answerphone, but please be aware that it will not be dealt with until Monday 7th January 2008.

Recently we received a donation of ÂŁ700 from Aberdeen City Council's small improvements grant, through Culter Community Council. This money was used to landscape the gardens at the front of the hall. I think everyone who passes the hall will agree that this has made a huge difference, not only to the hall but also to the general appearance of the village for passing pedestrians and motorists. Our thanks go to Tim and Helen Ramseyer who did most ofthe hard work clearing the area, designing the layout, choosing and planting the shrubs and putting the finishing touches to the whole frontage. We thank everyone who has supported us financially (and through hard labour!) and hope you approve of the improvements.

We wish all our coinmunity group users a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Susan Chappell-Smith Prrsiden~.

HERITAGE TRUST THE big event over the last few months was the Centenary Concert to inark the first 100 years of the Heritage Hall. An old time concert took place on 5th October and the capacity audience was entertained with an excellent pro, crramme including the Heritage Committee Choir. The Hall, previously the Episcopal Church in Ballater. is a much loved facility in Culter and it is hoped that over

the next year, progress will be made in renewing the roof and the repainting of the hall, both inside and outside. New heating has now been installed and the hall is warmer! There is a steady flow of visitors to the Heritage Centre which is encouraging. Visitors come from many parts of the UK and beyond and believe it or not, there are still people in Culter who have just made their first visit. If you have still not visited, you will be made most welcome. The Centre is open, Wednesday, Saturday & Sunday from 2-4p.m. Also on Saturdays & Sundays, afternoon teas are served in the hall. Tt is important that our displays are reflective of life in Culter and we are always looking for items of interest so that our displays can be updated. If you have any articles. photographs etc. which you would like to donate or lend to the Trust. please get in touch. For example, does anyone habe old ration books, magazines, foodstfuffs/tins/cleaning materials which

set sail from Loch Broom in the western Highlands to transport 200 souls to the new land. On the drive along the front, each lamppost is decorated with clan designs each in the shape of a shield of most of the clansmen who made the initial journey in the 1700s following the illfated rebellion. The town is very proud of its connections with Scotland and the museum of which the 'Hector' forms part was officially opened by Princess Anne. Before we left for this holiday, my wife Janet and I had arranged to be paired up with several Canadian couples for rounds of golf. Never since I left Culter nearly 50 years ago have I met such friendly folk. Nothing was too much trouble. Eventually we played on at least a dozen golf courses.

DISTANT THOUGHTS A FORMER resident of Culter. Mr Jim Duncan, has sent me an article telling of his trip to Nova Scotia, Canada. in September this year. It is full of interesting details but 1 will have to just give you a 'taste'. Our plane landed in Halifax but our ultimate destination was the small town of Montague on Prince Edward Island which we reached by ferry. The sail across the Gulf of St Lawrence takes an hour and a quarter and there is no charge for this. We reached the picturesque town of Pictou and there in the harbour was a full size replica of the ship 'Hector' which

The capital is called Charlottetown named after a member of our royal family and has a population of only 35,000. No parking problems anywhere and with fuel at 40p a litre (in our money) transportation is cheap. We managed - to visit the Anne of Green Gables homestead painted exactly like the book version. As it is a farm, the old steading with all the old implements, which I can remember my dad using at Lochiel Cushnie in 1946, have all been preserved. A couple of nights later we went to the musical (Anne of Green Gables) and it was great - true to life - and much like I remember my childhood in the village when Kennerty was still on the go and when both Gander Irvine and the late Kenny Mortimer and I used to deliver the .illage milk. In my 67 years, I have seen a fair bit of the world but never have I met such a wonderful group of people and it is without hesitation that I say, if you have the slightest chance of going there, grab it with both hands -you will love evely minute. If you do decide to go, give me an e-mail and I will point out some things like accommodations and costs etc. The editor (Marjory) has my address and will pass it on to any interested parties. Jimmy Duncan (JAZ)

PLAYGROUP NEWS

A new committee was elected last term and consists of the following, * Chairperson: Susan Robertson, * Vice Chair: Pa~nelaMcBain, * Treasurer: Donna MacLean, * Fee Treasurer: Diane Heyes, * Rota Secretary: Julie Thain * Claire Bryony Philip: Secretary. We would all like to say a big thank you to last year's committee for doing such a brilliant job arid hope that we can keep it up. We have a lot to live up to as last Year saw some great fundraisingactivities which raised a lot of money.

The runners included David Reid, Professor of Rheuiiiatology who was joined by medical colleagues from the University of Aberdeen. Professor Reid said, "I am very grateful to the Rotary Club of Aberdeen Deeside in arranging their annual Walk or Run in aid of the Grampian Osteoporosis Trust this year. Funds raised on the Walk or Run will enable the Trust to extend their generosity to support further cutting-edge research being done towards learning about osteoporosis and its treatment at the University." The Rotary Club of Aberdeen Deeside meets in the Cults Hotel on Wednesday evenings 6.15pm for 6.45pm. Anyone interested in attending should contact Mike Craig. Secretary at mike@craiglane.co.uk or on 0 1214 323732.

Firstly I would like to say welcome back to all after the October holidays; hope everyone had a good break. Playgroup last term welcomed some new little ones into the fold and along with those who continue from last year we have been learning about colours and celebrated Diwali by making lanterns and exploring different cultures. By the time you read this they will have enjoyed their Hallowe'en fancy dress party and be looking forward to the activities at the Christmas fare.

THE Rotary Club of Aberdeen Deeside again organised this year's Annual 10 kilometre Walk or Run along the old Deeside line. Now in its sixth year, nearly 5 0 young, middle-aged and mature participants completed all or part of the course. This year's principal charity was the Grampian Osteoporosis Trust which will receive ÂŁ1,300 from the Rotary Club.
