Culter C o u r i e r PUBLISHED BY THE COMMUNITY COUNCIL AUG 2007

T h e trees are native species, both deciduous and coniferous, spread along the top of the banks and the sides of the burn. Benches have been provided for weary walkers to rest and enjoy the view. Also under consideration by Aberdeen City Council is leaving some o f the grassland uncut to become meadow, with additional grass paths mown through it, and provision for sledging and for play equipment in the future. CC'C is grateful for prime funding from Aberdeen City Council and Aberdeen City Project. and for welcome contributions from the Balmoral Group and from Culter residents themselves via the Gala Fund.

NEW PATHS AT CORONATION PARK

Further improvement to the park's amenity has been the planting of numerous trees by Culter in Bloom volunteers and Aberdeen Countryside

I

N 2000. Culter Community Council suggested to Aberdeen City Council that building paths in Coronation Park would improve its amenity and provide a useful link between Coronation Road and School Crescent. This proposal was welcomed by visitors to the CuIter Planning for Real consultation esercise in 2005, s o it was developed in collaboration between CCC's Culter in Bloom group, Aberdeen City Council and Aberdeen Countryside Project.

The first fruit was a new footbridge across the bum, followed by two new paths. One crosses the bridge to link with Coronation Road, and the second goes from the bridge to the school playing field. Attention has been paid to surfacing and drainage by contractor Mike Runcie of Westhill, to ensure that the paths will be all-weather. Some sections are rather steep, which is inevitable on the high banks, but this will haveaerobic benefits which should be welcomed at the Health Centre.

SECRETARY'S REPORT

Let me give your garden the personal, professional touch. Professional garden design in Aberdeenshire and Deeride

S YOU will have noticed, there is no report from our Chair in this issue. Mrs Lavina Massie is almost at the end of her holiday in USA \\ith her son and his family and should be back in Culter by the time you are reading this.

Sames Farquhar and Ann Wakefield are joint Vice-chairs a n d h a v e d o n e a n excellent job in keeping the work of CCC running smoothly. Susan Chappell-Smith undertook the duties of Planning Officer and she was very pleased (as we all were!) that nothing contentious arose in the past two inonths. There is a report on the Gala in this issue but I wish to pass on the thanks of CCC to all who helped to make this a very successful event. Wasn't it lucky that we had the Gala early in the 'summer' season for so inany galas and shows had to be cancelled recently because of the underfoot conditions.

Wednesday-Saturday

Although all of the committee members are to be commended on their efforts, I wish to e x p r e s s special thanks to San Murphy. Nicola Hector a n d Claire Strachan. Jan, as co-ordinator, had many decisions to m a k e ; N i c o l a was kept especially busy with her duties as treasurer; Claire undertook the duties as secretary. San and Claire have announced they are demoting office - their families and work mean there are not enough hours in the day but w e thank them for the years they have served the Culter Gala. I also must mention Ann Wakefield who, for many y e a r s , has been h e r e , t h e r e a n d everywhere utilising her organisational skills to the full. Thanks to the members of the Culter in Bloom group who are doing such an excellent job in making Culter more colourful -and to lnany residents who are tending the arrangements. During July, there has not been the necessity to do much watering!

Anyone who has given a vote o f thanks will know that there is always someone we should have thanked but failed to d o so. I apologise in advance and await the telephone calls pointing out my mistakes and omissions.

ROADS A N D PATHS NEWS A RECENT friendly encounter with traffic wardens in Culter produced some useful information. It may surprise readers to learn that they are in the village e v e r y w e e k d a y to e n f o r c e t h e " n o waiting'' restrictions, w h i c h m a y encourage some revision of parking beha\ iour to avoid a ÂŁ30 fine.

What the wardens do not enforce, however, are the 45 m i n u t e waiting restrictions. You may not have noticed them because they a r e o n l y evident from sinall signs on both sides o f the North Deeside Road at the laybyes. To enable enforcement both the signs and the road n i a r k ~ n g swould h a v e to be renewed, so Culter Community Council (CCC) has asbed Aberdeen City Council ( A C C ) to d o s o t o h e l p s h o p s a n d shoppers. Completion should b e in September. At this time of year. hedges may have expanded to narrow pavements and force pedestrians towards traffic. We would remind owners of hedges that it is their responsibility to trim them back to their boundaries. The Deeside Way has been improved at Pittengullies Brae by ACC to make access easier. CCC asked them to consider extending the bitmac surfacing of the new ramps towards Culter, to cure the problem of inud and puddles, and they have done so as far as their budget would allow about half way to St Peter's. C C C is asking Aberdeen City Council t o complete surfacing as soon as possible, because the Deeside WayILovers' Walk circuit is so popular. The only adverse reaction to the surfacing is that some pedestrians are unhappy about mixing with bikes. This cannot be avoided, but cyclists should reduce speed when passing walkers, and warn them of

their approach. Bike bells may not be trendy. but would help greatly. Last y e a r CC'C d i s c u s s e d p a t h s on Newmillhill ( t h e plantation west o f Borsalino) with the Forestry Commission. We are hopeful that this year they will clear a new path from the North Deeside Road southwards to the phone mast, which gives fine views of the village. E x t e n s i o n o f t h e path to Belskavie Tower is also proposed. There was s o m e excitement near the Health C e n t r e e a r l y in July, w h e n the grass-cutting tractor collapsed the old plank bridge over the burn in Coronation Park. Because this created a public hazard. a pipe culvert was in place next day. We are asking ACC why, if they can respond s o quickly in an emergency. w e are having to wait several years for the footbridge which they propose over a ditch at Milltimber to complete the Dee bank path from Culter to Aberdeen. Apparently a new layer of legislation will delay this tiny bridge for yet another year. We are therefore suggesting to Aberdeen City Council that a culvert would d o the same job quicker, stronger, cheaper and with better floocl resistance. This issue of the Courier includes a copy o f the new leaflet C u l t e r Explorer. produced by CCC. We hope that it helps you to discover and enjoy new walks around Culter. Doug Stewart

FIRST of all, thank you for supporting me in the Aberdeen City Council elections. I look forward to helping with local issues. 1 received a warm welcome on your behalf at the June meeting of Culter Community Council. Already T have had some interesting problems put to me on lighting, parking and roads issues some of which have been solved but may take months to be put in place; others are under investigation. The new committee structure ofAberdeen City Council is now in place as follows: 1. Area Committee: we are in South area where 1 can address local issues. 2. Policy and Strategy: where city-wide policies are debated. 3. Resource Management: where the finance for policies is decided. 4. Performance and Standards: where monitoring of progress is made. In addition. there are the smaller committees - but neLertheless very important - such as planning, licensing and appeals. My main interests are in Performance Lk Standards and in Planning. T will be holding surgeries at 7pm

spent several years already in Scotland. initially Glasgow priorto her move to the north-east. She has completed the hospital phase of her postgraduate training and will be with us for 1 year. The practice is starting a drive to update patients' contact details - particularly telephone and mobile phone numbers; this is especially important when trying to contact people with results or information following hospital appointments. Please remember to inform us ifyou change your land-line or mobile number so we can update our records - the staff will be taking the opportunity to ask abbut contact details where possible when patients are at the surgery. Finally a massive thank you for the generous sponsorship of Drs McMain & Harris for their participation in the Aberdeen Baker Hughes 10K run at the end of May - we raised a very impressive E520, which goes to the Prostate Cancer Charity. The charity funds research into prostate cancer and also support and information services for patients and their carerslfamilies. This includes a website and a helpline manned by specialist nurses. We thought this was a most worthy cause. T h e race itself was challenging especially due to the rain and strong northerly winds along the beach esplanade. but very enjoyable running with such a big crowd. Best wishes,

POLICE REPORT Hello

CONGRATULATIONS g o t o our outgoing GP trainee Dr Janice Chin, who has successtully passed her final exam for her general practice qualification; she is moving on to work with a city practice for a while, where she will continue to develop her particular interest in minor surgery. We welcome our new trainee for 200712008 Dr Antje Haut (pronunciation of her surname rhymes with 'out') she originally trained in Germany and has -

Just a quick introduction; I am PC Andy Jack and I have not long started as the Community Beat Officer for Culter. I h a ~ been e in the Police for 7 years and it is the tirst time I have worked here, although I have worked in all the surrounding beats including Portlethen, Banchory and in Aberdeen. I am looking forward to getting around and meeting some new faces.

As well as being a Co~nmunityBeat Officer, 1 am a member of Grampian Police Mountain Rescue Team, and we are on call 2417 to aid and assist anyone in trouble in the Mountainous areas of the Grampian region. This provides quite a bit ofdiversity to my duties and the Police Office door is always open for advice should anyone require it. (Although if we're out at a call or off duty, just stick a note through the door and I'll get back to you!) I'm sure most Culter residents will be familiar with PC Alasdair MacHardy - he will still be working from Culter Police Office having responsibility for the Bieldside, Milltimber and Cults areas. Although you will generally see us working together. Alasdair has thrown me into the deep end as has got me typing my first article for the Culter Courier. Why me you ask? It's so that he can prepare for his holidays which he keeps reminding me about. (My holidays have come and gone! !) The Culter area is not just covered by Alasdair and me. Our colleagues from Aberdeen Response Division \rill also attend and deal with calls in our area. I would like to remind you that you can contact Grampian Police on OX45 600 5 700 for non-emergency calls and of course 999 for emergency calls only. Grampian Police has also joined the 2 1 st Century and you can reach us by Ernail se~icccentre@grampian.pnn.police.uk or for the deaf or hearing impaired, call the SMS TEXTPHONE on 07739 934444 or finally, you can provide anonymous information via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111 I hope you all have a great summer and enjoy your holidays.

CULTER 50+ WALKING GROUP AGAIN all our walks took place as planned. Denside of Durris at the end of April was followed by o n e o f o u r favourite annual walks round the Seven Bridges at Ballater when the rain just held off for us and picnic lunch was enjoyed at the White Bridge as usual. On 24th May we were without our minibus and started the day with a kind invitation from two of our members, Margaret and Colin Chapman. We relaxed in their garden with coffee and much appreciated home baking. Reluctant to move from this sunny spot, we did get going and Colin lead us on a very interesting walk around the area north of Culter. Our next walk was further afield, namely to Duff House and this included an optional tour round the house. Then it was back to Deeside where we thoroughly enjoyed the way-marked walk round Loch Kinnord, this time with an optional walk at lunchtime into the Burn o' Vat. The weather was kind

warm and sunny for most of the v.alk and the watcr lilies on the loch were at their best.

At the beginning of July we enjoyed another new walk for us - starting from Duthie Park, through Tony and along the cliff path to Covc, returning to our minibus by public transport.

CULTER Community Council is looking to brightcn up the village of Peterculter over the 2007 festive period by incrcasing the number of Christmas Light Features from our excellent 2006 Display. I am aware that Christmas is far from everyone's thoughts at present but we need to start preparations now. With this being the second year of our Christmas Lights Project, it is our intention to have additional Lighting Features installed on the village street lampposts to fill the gap between last year's display. In 2006 we had 5 features located at the east end of the Village and I0 features located from the Richtnond Arms to the Barber's Pole. Fundraising is already underway and we currently have raised enough money for several new Features. We have set our sights on an additional Target of 10 for the second year which will be difficult to achieve unless we receive your help. To undertake the Christmas Lights Project, Culter Community Council is looking for donations or sponsors (for individual features) through the

Munro bagging was the order of the day on I July with Reinn Mheadhoin (1 182m) the objective. After a dry bright start, the mist descended on the tops and navigation skills were put to the test between this mountain's unusual tors on its summit.

CULTER

HILLWALKING CLUB T H E Club's spring conquest was The Buck 011 1 April. In fine weather the group had excellent views from the summit, the perfect spot for viewing distant mountain ranges still capped with some snow. On the descent we stopped at a well-equipped hut with outdoor picnic bench. all very civilised. Also on the descent the group encountered some compacted snow, which had contined itself to the track down the Green Brow.

Heavy rain fell during the descent but the mist amazingly cleared at the summit temporarily giving the group sotne fantastic views. The sun made a welcome appearance during the early evening walk out. Skill and bravery were required during the return journey as the bum was in spate. All eventually crossed safely and without getting too wet. In August, we will be heading further afield to Ullapool and in September to Torridon.

You will appreciate that lately the regular Courier has contained extra material. For some time the Ciala Committee has used it as a n a y ofgetting tlie Gala programme into every home; similarly 'Culter in Bloom', and 'Christmas Lights' leajlets have both gone in . This has only been possible because \ve have a committed group who are prepared to carry and deliver the extra wcight (some have irp to 200) to keep you in touch.

HERITAGE TRUST T H E Heritage Centre has had an increased numbers of visitors since the internal refurbishment earlier in the year - comments fro111 visitors arc all extremely positive and amazed at what is on view. As has been said before, the Heritage Centre is unique in Aberdeen and it is encouraging that people are continuing to dotlate articles of interest which reflect the history of our community. We still reckon that there are many people in Culter who have still not seen the inside of the Heritage Centre - come down and visit and you will be made most welcome. Currently on display is a most interesting collection o f old Church records belonging to the former St. Peter's Church which have attracted much interest. These rccords, in due course. will be remoked to the Church of Scotland headquarters in Edinburgh.

The Heritage Hall celebrates its 100th birthday this autumn and a special concert is being held on Friday 5th October. More details of tickets etc will appear nearer the timt: but it will bc a good and memorable evening.

THE Culter Flower Show will be held this Saturday 181h August at the Village Hall and will be opened at 2pm by 1 s o b e l and Jim Campbell. lsobel ran the ' Show for many, many years, and we are looking forward to hearing her tales of past glories. The competitors' entries will be exhibited in the Main Hall: there will be * flowers, * flower arrangements, * vegetables, * pot plants, * hanging baskets, * cakes. * scones.

CULTER GALA 2007 FIRSTLY I would like to say thank you to everyone who was involved in this year's Culter Gala, in some way or other; the event could not take place without the help and support shown from individuals and businesses in Culter. I hope you agree that Gala Day was a good family day out and despite a heavy shower near the end we were very lucky with the weather, considering the last few weeks of June. Although our profit is down from last year, we hope to have around ÂŁ3,000 to distribute to local community groups which are in need of a donation. Please look out for details of how to apply for a donation elsewhere in this Courier. Hopehlly the community groups who ran stalls at the Gala managed to swell their funds with the proceeds they made on the day. We made a big effort to have no colnrnercial lets this year and only invited local businesses, cominunity groups and charities to come to the Gala. This means all the money spent during Gala Day goes directly back into our local community.

We were able to provide three inflatable activities this year due to the sponsorship by three companies who paid for the hire; * Culter Car Centre * Sparrows and * Framco It galls me that most of the takings on these go to pay the Entertainment's Licence required by ACC, but I believe the Gala was a better day for having these popular facilities for the children. The first Gala event, at end of April, was the popular kids' football competition, organised by coaches and parents at Culter Boys Club. This was run over two days and was a roaring success. Thanks go to Jim Buchan and his U10 parents, Geoff Weston and Gavin Fisher for their efforts over the weekend. It was good to see the event taking place after last year's absence. The Race Night was a fun evening and although tickets sales were down this year, it is still the Gala's biggest profit-making

event. All the Gala week events were reasonably well attended and it was pleasing to see a new event organised by the Parish Church - a walking treasure hunt. There were various events for all ages, and despite the Quiz Night being moved to the Monday after Gala Day, it was strongly supported. It is clear to me that new committee members, as well as a Gala Co-ordinator and Secretary are desperately needed. Our current secretary, Claire, is resigning due to work colnmitments and I am also stepping down completely after the AGM. I have served 4 years on the Gala committee and have very much enjoyed helping to organise this event and although I will continue to support it in some way, I feel it is time for a change. "New blood" is needed 10 move the Gala on a stage and so this leads me on to my last Gala task the forthcoming Gala AGM taking place on Tuesday 25th September at 7.30pm, at the Pop-In, North Deeside Road. I urge all community groups to send a representative, as well as individuals interested in joining the Gala Committee, to come along. Culter is extremely lucky to still have a Gala week full of various activities and a popular Gala Day. Many other community galas have folded and it would be a great shame to see this happen to the

ofthe best in the region attracting visitors from far and wide. We have received many complimentary comments about the condition of the course and most of these can be attributed to the hard work put in by our head Greenkeeper, Paul Sharpe, and his team of hardworking greens staff.

SADLY this summer, the weather has been atrocious witli continual rain and wind. Nevertheless, Peterculter Golf Club (PGC) has been busy with outings, opens and lots of funlconipetition golf for the members. By the time you read this. P G C will have hosted Aberdeen Petroleum Club's Charity Pro-Am golf tournament for the fourth time. On Saturday l l th August over 45 teams o f four players (including one PGA Professional from the Scottish Tartan Tour) will be playing alongside local sponsored teams as well as several celebrity guest players. Every year so far, the event has been a huge success and helped raise an enormous amount of money for local charity. The Northsound "Cash For Kids" golf day was another huge success and this year we hosted the IADC golf outing for the first time. We have had very positive feedback from the organisers of these events. They were extremely lucky in that the weather behaved itselfon those days, and the course was looking at its best thanks to hard work by all greens staff.

AN END OF AN ERA IT IS with mixed emotions that I write this article. 1 am very happy to announce that Mrs Kathleen Downie ,the backbone of Culter School Nursery is taking her well deserved retirement after more than 30years of dedicated service to the children of our community. Mrs Downie has nurtured many generations of the same families with a firm but always carlng hand and I am sure I can say with confidence, that we will all miss her but wish her every pleasure and happiness in her retirement.

This will be the fourth year that the North East Open Studios will take place featuring many talented new participants and fresh work from those who have been involved before. Each year t h e open studios and exhibitions have gained momentum and have attracted a huge amount of visitors and interest in the many artists participating throughout the Northeast of Scotland . CULT E R 'OoTBALL C'UB Champions Culter: Culter clinched the Super League Championship for a remarkable, indeed unique, 4th consecutive season with a l - 0 win against Formartine United at Pitmedden on Tuesday X May C." 2007. Radical Revamp: It was announced last October that the biggest ever revamp of the Scottish Cup would see the winners of the North Region Super League gain automatic entry. The change was ratified at the SFA Annual General Meeting on 1 June 2007 and that evening, Culter FC was featured on Scottish Television's North Tonight programme with Honorary Vice President D o ~ l gMilne being interviewed at Crolnbie park. The new road to Hampden will consist of 35 clubs in round one - Highland League, Qualifying South and threeJuniorClubs9 namely the winners of the North!West/ East Super Leagues and Scottish Junior Cup (Linlithgow Rose won both the CUP and their League hence only three instead of four Junior Clubs qualified). This is a major bonus for Culter FC for next season.

2007 and was ably escorted by Steve Davidson. It was a very enjoyable experience.

Playing Pool: Popular player Dave Calder has moved on to join lnverurie Locos. the Highland League runners-up last season, whilst Paul Morrison has announced his retirement from our , . squad. We thank both players for their past services and our best wishes go to them for the future.

Committee Composition: After a gap of many years we have reintroduced the position of Players' Representative on our Committee. We are pleased to welcome senior player Murray Rattray to fill this position. After the disappointing departure o f l e e O'Brien, Assistant Team Manager, this post was filled by the promotionofCoach Gary Thow andGary was replaced as Coach by newcomer Andy Gibson. Captains Connection: I was informed of an interesting fact by Fred Wright, a former Team Captain of Culter FC. Fred's son Gary not only has a father who held this post but his father-in-law is Dave Strath, is another former Club Captain!

AGM Appointments: Two former Culter FC members have joined our select list of Honorary Vice Presidents - ~ o u Grant g and Alex Irvine. joined us in 19x7 and was @ S Past Picture - 20 Years formerly our c l u b Vice Ago: Culter FC line-up President, Teanl Secretary and before our first ever match in ? 8 SJFA/NRJFA Correspondent the Junior league on and his knowledge in the Saturday 8 August 1987. minefield of players' paperwork kept us Junior newcomers Culter got otY to a to the fore in this field. Alex joined us in dream start in our new grade with a tine 4 1970 as a player and became Team -2 win over Inverurie Juniors at Crombie Captain, Team Manager, Trainer Coach Park. The result was a personal triumph and had a number of different duties on for our striker Colin Marnoch who hit a the Committee. They are still both hat-trick. regular supporters. Albert J Moir l!'

Annual Awards: The Dick Brown Memorial Trophy, presented annually to the member who has done most for the Club over the past season, was won by the General Secretary /Treasurer myself. It was an unexpected pleasant surprise for me. It was my 8th time. having first won the original trophy when it as donated in 1971172. The last time I won it was in 1993194. The Player of'the Year- Larry Barclay Trophy was won by resolute defender Andy Campbell. Andy, in his first season with Culter, was obviously taken aback "at this stage of my career" he modestly said. He was outstanding in defence throughout out our successful season. Andy was picked as a member of the Junior Team of the Year. Gala Guest: 1 had another surprise this year - I was invited to be Special Guest to perform the Official Celebrity Opening of Culter's Gala Day on Saturday 26 May

Back ROW:Gary Foote, Paul Thomson. Colin Marnoch, Mark Craigmile, Alan Walker, Stuart Davidson, John Mclntosh. Front Row: Billy Bain, Kevin Kennedy. Ian Smith. Colin C'heyne, Cius Johnstone, Peter Cieorge, Andrew Milne.
