Commander of Air Force Space Command

PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. — To the Men and Women of Air Force Space Command, As Americans, we’re privileged to celebrate the 241st anniversary of our nation’s independence. July 4th carries a special significance to those who continue to defend our land and way of life. Independence Day is also a time of celebration and fun, to include water sports, picnics, and fireworks. It is indeed a great time to spend with CSMNG friends and family. I hope you have a great holiday and enjoy some downtime. My only request is you be safe. As you enjoy the holiday weekend, please know the risks associated with your activities and take necessary safety precautions. Be especially careful on the road by driving defensively and sober while taking frequent breaks when traversing long distances. Above all, be smart and alert wingmen to each other. Thanks for what you do each day for our Air Force and this great country. Have a safe and enjoyable 4th! Sincerely, Jay Raymond COLORADO SPRINGS MILITARY NEWSPAPER GROUP

New Leader From page 1 excited for the challenges ahead,” Kehl said. “I promise to the wing and to the 50 MSG, I will not let you down, and continue on the legacy Col. Janaros has left for me. My pledge to you (50 MSG) is to do my best to provide the resources, training, guidance and direction that you require to accomplish your mission. I look forward to working with each of you.” Burt reflected on the numerous achievements the 50 MSG has made under the guidance of Janaros. Awards accumulated during his command was 63 wing, 25 major

command and 5 Air Force Headquarterslevel awards. “He (Janaros) has taken this base from being a commuter base, to one where people enjoy living on,” Burt said. “When they moved the 310th Space Wing Mission Support Group from Buckley to here, he was at the forefront of ensuring a smooth transition. His contracting team worked to stand up the new National Space Defense Center in a record four months. We now have a youth center design, our first concert was held, first cohesion challenges, goRUCK teams, combative courses, functional fitness and Olympic training center partnerships — all firsts, all thanks to his leadership.” During the event, Janaros was awarded the Legion of Merit for his distinguished

service as 50 MSG commander. “People want to stand up here and tell you change of commands are bittersweet — for me it’s just very bitter,” laughed Janaros. “I am grateful for my time here. In the last couple years, I’ve seen this community grow, and continue to grow. I thank you for the opportunity to serve.” In closing, Janaros turned toward the formation of 50 MSG Airmen he led during his time at Schriever, and thanked them for their service. “I stand on your shoulders — you are pioneers in every sense of the word,” Janaros said. “You were above and beyond. It was my distinct honor to serve with you, learn and grow from you. As you go forward, I want you to continue to lead fearlessly.”

MCEC workshop to benefit Schriever families By Senior Airman Arielle Vasquez 50th Space Wing Public Affairs

The Military Child Education Coalition’s workshop “Responding to Military Children with Exceptional Needs,” will take place at Hotel Elegante, Colorado Springs July 25 — 26. The workshop is designed to inform adults about military-connected children with exceptional needs and the issues they may face transitioning from school to school. In this course, exceptional children are defined as those who need either special education services or gifted education services to maximize their individual potential. “Military Child Education Coalition workshops are extremely important,” said Ruth Moore, Airman and Family Readiness Center community readiness consultant. “Military children

generally move six to nine times during their K-12 school years. Many make multiple moves during high school years alone; some even during their senior year. This is why there is a need for workshops like this.” Topics covered in the course include amplified challenges of militaryconnected students with exceptional needs, laws and policies, the referral process, communication, fostering hardiness in children and synchronization of services. “As the military child education coordinator/school liaison officer and workshop facilitator, I coordinated with Air Force Personnel Center and MCEC to obtain the workshop and assist with the logistics,” Moore said. “Additionally, I have marketed the workshop to school leadership, helping agencies at several bases and other agencies that work with military children. I am the clearinghouse for all matters related to K-12 military child

education in and around Schriever.” Anyone who assists military-connected children with exceptional needs on a daily basis to include parents, teachers, principals and school counselors are encouraged to attend. A total of 50 slots are available for the workshop. “This program has been in place for 20 years,” said Jessica Thibodeau, MCEC Marketing and Communications director. “This training is important in order to address the needs in a community for transitioning children with special needs as they serve alongside their military parents. We would like to encourage individuals interested in the well-being of military and veteranconnected youth to develop additional insight and resources by attending this workshop.” For more information or to register, call Ruth Moore at 567-3920 or visit http://www.militarychild.org/ trainings-and-events1.

The Responding to Military Children with Exceptional Needs workshop furthers the 50th Space Wing’s priority of investing in a culture of exceptional service and community for Team Schriever and their families by providing education to adults regarding issues military-connected children with exceptional needs may face.

Last week’s question and answer: The mythical beast comprising the emblem of the 50th Space Wing is what kind of creature? The beast is an Opinicus, similar to the Gryphon or Griffin. BONUS: From where did the wing derive its emblem? The emblem was first used by the 50th Pursuit (now Operations) Group beginning in 1942. This week’s question: On Sept. 1, 1959, the 50th Tactical Fighter Wing’s headquarters and some support elements returned to Hahn Air Base, Germany, from a three year assignment at what base in France? Responses to the quiz questions can be emailed to 50 SW/PA at 50swpa.workflow@us.af.mil.

global combat effects. Our adversaries are coming and our nation needs you.” Grant comes to Schriever leaving her post as 30th Operations Group commander at Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. Grant previously commanded at Schriever as the 2nd Space Operations Squadron commander from August 2010 to June 2012. “I am extremely humbled, honored, and excited to be returning to Schriever. This will be my third assignment here, and in a lot of ways it feels like coming home to the Masters of Space,” said Grant. As commander of the wing and installation host, Grant will be responsible for the operation and support of more than 175 satellites and installation support to

16 major tenant units with a workforce of more than 8,100 military, Department of Defense civilians and contractor personnel. The base with its mission partners provide a combined economic impact of approximately $1.3 billion. “I am looking forward to continuing to shape how we think about, innovate, and deal with space as a contested, degraded environment; and how we continue to move forward to train and develop our space and cyber personnel to assure our continued dominance in this area,” said Grant. After two years in command here, Burt is headed to Nellis Air Force Base, Las Vegas, Nevada, to be the vice commander of the Air Warfare Center.

50 FSS to host Summer Slam picnic By Halle Thornton 50th Space Wing Public Affairs

Team Schriever members are invited to celebrate summer and go to the Summer Slam Base Picnic, the 50th Force Support Squadron’s largest annual event July 21 beginning at 10 a.m. Wayne Kingsbury, event coordinator, predicts there will be approximately 1,700 people will be in attendance this year, and stressed the importance of receiving support from all 50th Space Wing members to ensure success of the event. “We can’t do this alone,” Kingsbury said. “We need all the help we can get.” New features of the picnic this year will include pony rides and a “fire muster”, which is Schriever’s own band of firefighters completing various tasks for show, like hauling hoses and filling buckets. “We love seeing the entire Schriever community come together to bring fun to the event, so we’re excited to see what our Team 5-0 fire team has up their sleeves,” said Jennifer Stark, 50 FSS marketing director. FSS have also acquired exotic rides such as camels and elephants for guests to enjoy from 10 a.m.-noon, and pony rides will be from 10 a.m.2 p.m. Participants will need to sign a liability waiver and wear a wristband before taking part. In addition to the games and activities like inflatable hamster balls, rock climbing walls and bounce castles, the Air Force band “Wild Blue Country” will be playing through to the afternoon. Other activities will include an electric train for kids, renaissance fair actors performing and guest appearances from the Switchbacks mascot and team players. Stark said the best part about the event is the family-friendly atmosphere. “The amount of opportunity for the entire family to come out and have fun is the best part,” Stark said. “From carnival style activities such as gravity play, to riding on elephants and camels, this event is made to bring the entire family some fun.” Complimentary hot dogs, chips, cookies, ice cream sandwiches, water and soda will be available, as well as drinks. In preparation for the picnic, the basketball court at the fitness center will be closed from noon-7:30 p.m. July 20. Additionally, there will be no after-hours access on July 21 at 6 p.m. Regular fitness center hours will resume July 22. For more information about the Summer Slam or to volunteer, contact Master Sgt. Janelle Amador at 567-5927.

Schriever, Ellicott provide youth summer activities By Senior Airman Arielle Vasquez 50th Space Wing Public Affairs

The Schriever School Age Care program invited Ellicott summer camp participants to the installation for a trio of events to enhance community relationships. The two-week Summer Enrichment Program provides children classes and activities to do during their summer break for the second time. ”During the Summer Enrichment Program, the kids have learning opportunities at Ellicott, but also have the chance to come to Schriever to participate in our three-day event,” said Mary Barkley, Airman and Family Services flight chief. “We are trying to stay in line with leadership’s vision to have events where we work with our neighborhood school and also showing there’s a need for youth programs during the summer. Our goal was to ensure the kids had fun, but also had learning experiences. This was a break away from academics and something they wouldn’t normally do at school.” Approximately 119 children between the ages of 7 and 18 attended the event.

The first day kicked off with Olympic inspired events June 26. The children were divided into groups and were rotated according to different activities, which were held in the fitness center and the outdoor running track. Schriever volunteers led the activities according to event stations. “We looked for volunteers who actually had the skills in the areas they were assisting,” Barkley said. “We had an Airman that had been doing track and field for 20 years. It’s good to have people with experience teach the kids different skill sets. It makes things easier and provides more organization.” During the first day, students participated in a wide variety of games including capture the flag, dodgeball, relay races and shot put. Events during the program will also take place June 28 and 29. “We hired a magician and are also offering resiliency classes Wednesday,” Barkley said. “A field day will take place Thursday, which involves bouncy houses, tennis, basketball and a team-building exercise.”

Summer Enrichment Program participants play a game of dodgeball at Schriever Air Force Base, Colorado, Monday, June 26, 2017. The Summer Enrichment Program spans two weeks and provides children activities during their summer break.

Parents in attendance had high praise for the program. “This is our second time being a part of this,” said Sandra Gil Chacon, Ellicott School student parent. “I know kids tend to forget material over the summer, so having this program reinforces academic material, as well as providing fun activities for them to do. As a parent, I find this to be nice for the community to have this outlet for the kids and I think they should continue to do this program over the years.” Barkley thought the collaborative events not only provided great opportunities for the youth, but served to build professional and personal relationship between Schriever and Ellicott. “Everybody had a huge part in making this happen. I think there’s so much value to it,” Barkley said. “Having that socialization piece is so important for youth and they don’t have that as often during the summer time. It also gives parents a break and continues to build that relationship with our neighborhood school. This is the fun part of the job for me; I love working with the kids and being able to see them enjoy themselves.”

Children attending the Summer Enrichment Program socialize each other 26, 2017. This year marks the second time the base hosted this program.

2017 Water Quality Report

Cherokee Metropolitan District supplies drinking water to Schriever Air Force Base. Base personnel can get the facts about the water they drink from the recently released Cherokee Metropolitan District — Consumer Water Quality Report. This report (reporting period Jan. 1 — Dec. 16, 2016) informs the public about the water quality and services provided to the base population every day. Cherokee Metropolitan District staff, as well as the 21st Medical Group’s Bioenvironmental Engineering Flight, test the water consumed throughout the base. Throughout the process of collection, treatment and distribution, certified water treatment plant operators and laboratory staff monitor the water quality for its chemical and biological content. Some of these analyses are required to meet state and federal standards, while others are part of ongoing testing to assure a continual supply of high quality drinking water. Cherokee Metropolitan District employees test the water at the wells, treatment plant and water distribution system. While BE tests water at five different sampling locations per month for microbiological contamination that could occur in the

Schriever AFB section of the distribution system. The Schriever AFB sample sites include the dining facility and the Child Development Center. All 2016 microbiological samples were analyzed by El Paso County Public Health laboratory and reported safe. In 2016, Cherokee Metropolitan District received its water supply from three distinct sources: groundwater from deep aquifers in the Arapaho and Denver Basins (non-renewable water), north of Black Forest and alluvial groundwater from the Upper Black Squirrel Basin (renewable water). The same year, the supplies from the Arapaho and Denver Basin wells supplied approximately 9 percent of the District’s water supply. The Upper Black Squirrel Creek Alluvial Aquifer supplies groundwater from 19 municipal wells spanning an area nine miles north to ten miles south of the town of Ellicott. These municipal wells are drilled approximately 180-feet deep. Cherokee Metropolitan District would like their customers to be informed about their water utility services. To learn more, call their Distribution System Supervisor,

Mike Kielma, at (719) 597-5080 or attend an open Board of Directors meeting scheduled at 3 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month located at 6250 Palmer Park Blvd in Colorado Springs. To view the complete 2017 Consumer Water Quality Report, visit the Cherokee Metropolitan District Website at http://www.cherokeemetro.org/?page_id=5672 or the Schriever AFB web page at www.schriever.af.mil. Consumers without web access can get a hard copy of the water quality report at the BE office located in building 500. All Schriever AFB personnel living in Peterson Air Force Base dormitories can receive a hard or electronic copy of the report from their dorm manager. For more information on Schriever AFB water quality, call the Schriever Bioenvironmental go to http://www.schriever. af.mil/Portals/17/documents/Water%20Quality%20Report. pdf?ver=2017-06-30-114810-030. Career skills programs help Airmen prepare for post-military employment By Kat Bailey Air Force Personnel Center Public Affairs

JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIORANDOLPH, Texas — The Air Force has recently begun participating in career skills programs which afford eligible Airmen the opportunity to prepare for a post-Air Force career up to six months before separation or retirement. Apprenticeships, on-the-job training, employment skills training and internships are all career skills programs that offer skills training opportunities to officer and enlisted service members preparing to transition from military to civilian employment. “Career skills programs are vocational and technical training programs that focus on the practical application of learned skills and can lead to employment in a specific career or technical trade,” said

Ramona Franklin, Education Services Specialist at the Air Force Personnel Center. “Training can take place up to six months prior to an Airman’s separation.” According to Franklin, the program is based on two driving principles: the Air Force will allow eligible Airmen to participate in industry training instead of performing military duties during the closing months of their careers, and industry training providers will offer training at little or no cost to eligible Airmen. An Airman must have completed at least 180 days on active duty and be within 180 days of an approved retirement or separation in order to be eligible to participate in a CSP. Airmen must receive commander’s approval to participate and the training opportunity must meet certain conditions. “The program must offer a high probability of employment and be provided to the Airman at little or no cost, and

should improve or broaden the Airman’s skill by building on occupational skills learned while in service,” Franklin. “You can also choose a program that provides all new skills related to your goal for civilian employment.” Commanders are encouraged to support career skills programs by identifying transitioning Airmen, ensuring maximum dissemination of information and supporting participation in the program when manpower and resources are sufficient to release the Airman. “When possible, facilitating the smooth transition of Airmen into the civilian workforce fully employed is in the best interest of both the Air Force and each Airman,” said Todd Usnik, Education Operations Business Process Owner. Airmen may apply to participate in a CSP through self-nominations either after meeting with an education counselor

or while attending the Transition Goals, Plans, Success Transition Assistance program. However, Usnik recommends planning ahead for the transition to civilian life. “Ideally, eligible Airmen should begin identifying potential programs and working with their education or TGPS counselor at least a year out from their separation date,” Usnik said. “For this reason, we send them a myPers message 12 months out to provide them a link to information about the programs.” For additional information, visit the Air Force Virtual Education Center and then schedule an appointment with an Education or TGPS Guidance Counselor. Airmen may also find details on myPers. Select “Any” from the dropdown menu and search “Job Training.” For more information about Air Force personnel programs, go to myPers.
