Meet the SBD 1 Commander: Q&A with Col. David Hanson By Paul Honnick

Where are you from?

Space Base Delta 1 Public Affairs

I’m from a relatively small town in northern Illinois called Gurnee. Those of you from the Midwest might know that town. It’s the home of the Six Flags Great America amusement park, which was placed in my hometown many years ago. It’s halfway between Milwaukee and Chicago to the mile. That’s where I spent many of my teenage summers hanging around in Great America.

PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — U.S. Space Force Col. David Hanson, Space Base Delta 1 commander, sat down for an interview with U.S. Air Force Airman 1st Class Aaron Edwards, SBD 1 public affairs specialist, July 26, 2022. Hanson, who assumed command of SBD 1 on July 11, discussed his space background, his leadership philosophy and his view about pineapple on pizza. The full interview is below:

If you could compete in one Olympic sport, what would it be? My wife could answer this one and I’d agree with her – it’s probably swimming; some kind of swimming event. I grew up as a competitive swimmer from early childhood, and even today, I enjoy swimming. I don’t compete anymore, however, a good workout is going to the pool and swimming some laps. I actually enjoy watching swimming events when the Olympics happen, and although it’s not me anymore, I wouldn’t mind competing in a swimming event.

Tell us a bit about your family.

I’ve been married to my wife, Mary, for 24 years. We have four children, ranging from ages 27 down to 12. Two of them are still in the house and two of them are out on their own. Three of them are going to college right now, and our youngest will be a seventh-grader this year.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I’m Colonel David Hanson, the commander of Space Base Delta 1, which is the largest installation support organization in the United States Space Force. We run and operate seven installations worldwide; that’s roughly half of the U.S. Space Force installations. We also provide mission support to roughly 23 other installations worldwide.

What has been your favorite military assignment and why?

What excites you about being the Space Base Delta 1 commander?

I don’t have a favorite assignment because they’ve all been great in one way, shape or form, but if you ask my family, they loved Guam. We lived in Guam from 2004 to 2006, when I was the commander of the satellite tracking station out there. Quite frankly, they loved it because the kids got to wear shorts and t-shirts to school every day of the year. It also wasn’t a bad place to do some scuba diving. We lived and worked on a tropical island.

It’s the people; it’s the people who make SBD 1 operate. I look forward to working with all of the professionals, both here in the Front Range, and at all of our installations worldwide, as part of SBD 1. It’s the people who make the mission happen.

What is your leadership style or philosophy?

Three words: trust, delegate and support. I trust each and every one of you to do your jobs. You wouldn’t be in your positions if you didn’t know how to do your jobs. I will also delegate. I can’t do your jobs. I don’t want to do your jobs because you will do it much better than I will, but I’ll be your biggest supporter. If you need something, you just need to work through your chain of command and ask. Between me and Chief Master Sgt. Balkuvvar, [SBD 1 command chief], we will support you.

So, pineapple on pizza — yay or nay?

Pineapple on pizza? Well, I’ll answer it this way: I do like pizza a lot. So you give me a piece of pizza with pineapple on it, I’m going to eat it, but I wouldn’t order it myself.

What are two words that describe SBD 1?

It’s “One Team,” and I’ll tell you what that means. One team means that we are one organization with seven installations. So, if something happens at one installation, then maybe the answer is to pick up the phone. Phone a friend because those friends are part of your team and our Space Base Delta 1 family. We need to reach out and support others, even if they’re not our installations.

What is one thing you want everyone at SBD 1 to know?

What are three words that best describe you?

Well, some folks would think I’m serious, and I am serious, but that’s because I’m dedicated to the people and the mission. I think about how we can help them and improve our missions every single day. Once you get to know me, I’m a pretty fun guy. If we haven’t laughed together as a group in a long time, then I’ll be the first one to tell a really bad dad joke to get the laughter going. So yes, serious, but dedicated. And certainly full of fun.

I want everyone to know the impact they’re making daily to global space operations and homeland defense missions. It’s important to know that they’re not just coming to work to turn a wrench or type on a keyboard; they’re certainly making a difference in national security. The space operations that the United States relies on every single day, is happening here on our installations and our folks at Space Base Delta 1 are supporting those missions. Just realize the importance of what you do every single day, no matter what you do.

SCHRIEVER SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — Members of the 3rd Test and Evaluation Squadron, the 7th Space Operations Squadron and the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory Space Vehicles Directorate farewelled to Mycroft, a research and development space vehicle, during final operations at Schriever Space Force Base, March 2022. The Mycroft flight experiment pushed the boundaries of in space object characterization and navigation technologies which increased safety of flight while maneuvering in a congested and dynamic environment. Launched on Air Force Space Command 11 on April 14, 2018, Mycroft accomplished over 15 AFRL/RV experiments as well as 12 unplanned experiments vital to the National Space Defense Center. These ad hoc experiments were essential in providing real-world training and data to space operators. AFRL transitioned satellite control authority to 3rd TES on Sept 16, 2020. “Our mission here at 3 TES is to build test capabilities and execute integrated tests and experimentation,” said U.S. Space Force Lt. Col. Anna Gunn-Golkin, 3rd TES commander. “Mycroft transferred to us while we were still the 3rd Space Experimentation Squadron. As we transitioned to a test organization in August 2021, Mycroft taught us how to move from experimentation on the vehicle, to experimentation with the vehicle, to using a robust, proven spacecraft sfspaceorbital.com

to execute tests and deliver tactical capabilities with strategic implications.” Under the command of 3rd TES, Mycroft flew four AFSPC and U.S. Space Force tests and, for the first time on-orbit, demonstrated orbital warfare tactics. The 3rd TES provided live flight data to 12 mission partners spanning all three USSF field commands, paving the way for future Space Operations Command and Space Training and Readiness Command orbital warfare testing, training and operations. During the fi nal satellite contact, USSF Capt. John Newell, Test Pilot School and Space Test Course student, USAF Reserve Capt. Bryan Wynkoop, 6th SOPS f light commander and Department of the Air Force civilian Dr. Richard “Father Mycroft” Zappulla, AFRL/RV Mycroft principal investigator and lead guidance, navigation and control engineer passivated Mycroft. The passivation of a spacecraft is the removal of any internal energy contained in the vehicle at the end of its mission or useful life. During the final contact, the crew confirmed the vehicle was properly passivated by being in the safest, lowest energy state possible. This included venting any residual propellant and disconnecting and draining the batteries to ensure the spacecraft can not cause any inadvertent radio frequency interference with other spacecraft. Before Aug. 27, 2021, the 3rd TES was known as the 3rd Space Experimentation Squadron and was a component of the

Peterson Space Force Base

Space Training and Readiness Delta. All 3rd SES commanders who contributed to Mycroft’s success, were present for the final command sequence: USSF Col. Kevin Amsden, National Space Defense Center deputy director, USSF Lt. Col. William Burich, Joint Task ForceSpace Defense Current Operations division chief, USAF Lt. Col. retired Zack Owen, National Space Defense Center contractor and USSF Lt. Col. Anna Gunn-Golkin, 3rd TES commander. “It was really neat to have four commanders present for Mycroft’s end of life,” said Dr. Zappulla. “Seeing all four commanders there, you really sense the passion our team has, and you come to understand and appreciate the impact Mycroft had in bettering our nation, and the lives of everyone who worked on her. We had the right people at the right time. This program has significantly pushed the bar forward in terms of science and technology, and is the highlight of my career.” The unfailing partnership between AFRL/RV, 7th SOPS, 3rd TES and the USSF at-large enabled Mycroft to outlive its 1-year design life by almost three years, contributing to the development of future orbital warfare and space domain awareness test, training and tactics development. The government and industry will be applying lessons from the Mycroft flight experiment to future missions and architectures, becoming the technical baseline for future generations of tactical spacecraft and operations.

Summer, sun and safety

By Minda Parsons, Health Promotions Director 21st Operational Medical Readiness Squadron

PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. — Summer is here and we are all in for a season of sweating and scorching heat. It is always a good time to put on sunscreen, however, summer is an especially good time to make sure you are covered. Protecting yourself from the sun’s rays can pay off for your health in the long run. Skin cancer is on the rise in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates there were more than 71,943 people diagnosed with melanoma of the skin, the most serious form of skin cancer, in 2013 alone. While melanoma accounts for only about 1% of all skin cancers in the U.S., it is the deadliest form of the disease. Reports estimate that 7,650 deaths from melanoma will occur in 2022 and over 65% will be men. Dr. Sondak, from the Mofitt Cancer Center, says these estimates of expected skin cancers are accurate. Too much exposure to ultraviolet rays can have long-term adverse effects on your body.

These include: • Premature aging of the skin • Wrinkles • Leathery skin • Liver spots • Actinic keratosis • Solar elastosis • Eye problems • Increased risk of skin cancer Properly utilizing sunscreen can help prevent the development of skin cancer. In general, the FDA recommends that you use broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher, even on cloudy days. Ensure you use your sunscreen correctly, by reading the label and ask a health care professional before applying sunscreen to infants younger than six months.

Lt. Gen. Chance Saltzman nominated to be next Space Force Chief of Space Operations By Staff Writer Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs

ARLINGTON, Va. (AFNS) — Lt. Gen. B. Chance Saltzman has been nominated to be U.S. Space Force’s next Chief of Space Operations. If confirmed by the Senate, Saltzman will become the service’s highest ranking officer and the second Chief of Space Operations in the young service’s history. Saltzman will step into the position currently held by Gen. John W. “Jay” Raymond, who has led the Space Force since its establishment in December 2019. Raymond is projected to retire later this year. “I am very honored and humbled by the nomination to be the second Chief of Space Operations. If confirmed, Jennifer and I will be committed to building on the incredible foundation Gen. Jay and Mollie Raymond put in place for our service and we are forever grateful for their service and dedication,” said Saltzman. Raymond praised Saltzman and his nomination and paid tribute to the Guardians and Airmen that he has led over his career. “It has been the honor of a lifetime to lead Guardians and Airmen and to serve as the Space Force’s first Chief of Space Operations. I couldn’t be more excited about the next chapter for the world’s greatest Space Force and the nomination of Chance Saltzman to serve as our next CSO,” Raymond said. “His extensive space experience and deep understanding of how to integrate space into the defense of our nation have made him indispensable to the establishment of this service and Guardians the world over will not find a more loyal teammate.” Likewise, Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall praised Raymond for his tenure and for the way he built the Space Force. Kendall said that Saltzman was the ideal nominee to build on the Space Force’s accomplishments. “General Jay Raymond has worked tirelessly to create a strong foundation for the Space Force and to set our Guardians up for long term success. Every American should be gratesfspaceorbital.com

ful for what he has accomplished,” Kendall said. “I’m certain that General Saltzman has the skill and the drive needed to build on that foundation, and if confirmed, I’m looking forward to the opportunity to work with him as the second Chief of Space Operations,” he said. If confirmed, Saltzman would inherit a Space Force as it continues its transition from the early planning and organizational phases required to form the first new branch of the military since 1947 to one that focuses more on the Department of the Air Force’s operational imperatives. Since August 2020, Saltzman has served as Deputy Chief of Space Operations for Operations, Cyber, and Nuclear. In this role, Saltzman has overall responsibility for operations, intelligence, sustainment, cyber, and nuclear operations for the Space Force. Commissioned in 1991 after graduating from Boston University, he has deep operational experience with missile and space systems as a Minuteman III launch officer and as a satellite operator for the National Reconnaissance Office. U.S. Space Force TMO visits Space Systems Command, taps into Guardian Ideal to develop path forward By Arsenio R. Cortez Jr. Space Systems Command Public Affairs

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — The U.S. Space Force’s Talent Management Office conducted a town hall meeting at Space Systems Command to discuss and reinforce the implementation of the Guardian Ideal, July 13. The Guardian Ideal, initially employed in September 2021, is a foundational document creating a new talent management approach to build upon each individual’s unique strengths and empower interconnected high-performing teams. “The Guardian Ideal is the Chief of Space Operations’ human capital strategy, designed to onboard talent with the character and potential to excel,” said Robert Romer, director of the Talent Management Office for the U.S. Space Force. “We empower them with information and choice, develop them in line with their desires and Space Force needs, to create the high-performing teams we need to secure and defend space. Very important to stress that everything we U.S. Space Force photo by Van Ha do for human capital is based on Space Robert Romer, director of Talent Management Office and Dr. Mathew Jobe, TMO’s chief learning officer and director of Guardian Development for the U.S. Space Force, discuss Force requirements.” the accomplishments and future path of the Guardian Ideal implementation during a town hall meeting at the Space Systems Command headquarters in Space Base Delta 3, July Creating the Guardian Ideal for the 13. “When we are only 16,000 strong, that’s harder to do. If we lose somebody that’s important, we just didn’t lose the human, we lost the competencies as well.” Compared to its larger sister services, sustaining the Space Force’s human capital is critical and its importance is further magnified. During the town hall, they explained that the U.S. Air Force, with about 330,000 active duty Airmen and approximately 200,000 civilians, has the ability to fill positions when needed to sustain operations. “Everything that we do is designed to ensure we are thinking about the competencies,” said Romer. “What we can do to attract individuals who want to be a part of this great working environment, be a great teammate, and be connected to the mission.” For some SSC Guardians, accelerating these changes can drive and push new standards while decoupling from adapted and familiar concepts from the Air Force to ensure the Space Force keeps a competitive edge. It is tailored to a small, unique force that is built to provide space-based capabilities to the future joint warfighters. “Are we going to see updates to the performance appraisals?” asked Col. Heather B. Bogstie with Space Sensing Program during the first session of the town hall meeting. “In my opinion, they can’t happen soon enough. Are we looking at accelerating this at any point?” The question was echoed by Lt. Col. Rupinder Sekhon with Military Communication & Positioning, Navigation and Timing Program during the second session. “Having our team understand where they are at and where they can improve is a good feedback mechanism. Having constant feedback is good because you can make quicker adjustments.” The new approach to performance appraisals, expected by the end of fiscal year 2023, will constitute ongoing assessments of individual performance, focus on the team’s mission, collect data from multiple sources, and use expert developed measures. “Multi-sourcing data collection will continue to grow, lower admin burden, and become more team focused,” said Romer. “We asked Guardians what things they value from a team-centric focus as well as for mission accomplishment, what that system needs to look like, and what values resonate with

Guardians when assessing performance from a team concept.” Another important aspect of the Guardian Ideal that was mentioned by Romer is to embrace the Space Force culture that is based on team strength and mission focus. “The Guardian Commitment is the foundation for building our culture and implementing the Guardian Ideal,” he explained. “The four values; commitment, courage, character, and connection are central to all talent management programs and processes.” Millette emphasized a key takeaway to remember — TMO will continue working with Guardians in every step to achieve the Guardian Ideal. “The Space Force Talent Management Office has been and continues to use the Guardian Ideal as a means of developing and implementing state of the art processes and procedures for recruiting, placing, and developing Guardians,” said Millette. “The SSC Talent Management office is working with the TMO to ensure that the SSC workforce is well taken care of.” The TMO presenters discussed the following objectives and path forward: • Transfer over 1,000 other Service Inter-service Transfers by end of FY22 • Implement AcqDemo Direct Hire Authority by 1 Sep 22 • Implement Workforce Design concept by end of CY22 • Operationalize the Guardian Commitment in HR processes and culture by end of FY22 • Complete development of Foundational and Occupational competencies by end of FY22 • Map competencies by position by end of CY22 • Assess Guardians by end of CY23 • Transition from legacy USAF evaluations to Performance Appraisals by FY23 • Develop a framework for promotion readiness by end of CY22; implement FY24 For more information about the Guardian Ideal, please connect with your local command talent management office.

Monkeypox declared public health emergency: What Airmen and Guardians need to know By Staff Writer Air Force Surgeon General Public Affairs

FALLS CHURCH, Va. — The World Health Organization declared monkeypox a public health emergency on July 23. With more than 4,000 cases in the United States, Airmen and Guardians should know the risks and how to stay safe. Monkeypox is primarily spread from person-to-person through prolonged close contact with an infectious rash, scabs or body fluids, as well as through respiratory droplets or oral fluids. Additionally, spread can also occur through the handling of objects such as bedding or clothing belonging to a person with a known infection. VACCINE AND TREATMENT The Food and Drug Administration has approved vaccine for monkeypox, however it is in limited supply in the United States. The Department of Defense is working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to ensure all service members, stateside and overseas, have vaccine within 24 to 48 hours. Members who have questions and concerns, or want to know their vaccine eligibility should contact their military treatment facility. Patients who receive care outside of the MTF should contact their local provider. The current guidance on who can get vaccinated prioritizes those who are a known contact identified through public health contact tracing, as well as those who have had sexual contact in the last 14 days with an individual who was infected or had multiple sexual partners in the past 14 days in an area with known monkeypox cases. Additionally, those whose jobs may expose them to monkeypox, such as laboratory workers who handle monkeypox specimens,

are advised to receive the vaccine. “If you believe you fall into one of these categories, then you need to quickly reach out to your provider to get assessed and confirm the need for the vaccine,” said Lt. Col. David Sayers, Chief, Preventive Medicine, Air Force Medical Readiness Agency. Airmen and Guardians should seek medical care immediately if they believe they have come in close contact with someone with a known infection or have a suspected infection themselves. “Please do not wait to seek medical attention if you believe you are infected or a close contact,” said Sayers. “While the current outbreak has mostly been seen among men, anyone can be at risk of getting infected. Children, pregnant women and people who are immunocompromised are most at risk of severe complications should they become infected.” Isolation is recommended for the duration of the illness if an individual is confirmed to have monkeypox. Treatment is primarily supportive care to treat the pain, rash, fever and body aches, especially for young, healthy individuals. Currently, there are no specific medications licensed to treat monkeypox.

SYMPTOMS The most prominent monkeypox symptom includes a rash that classically starts on the face and distributes to the extremities. In the current outbreak, the rash has been found to be distributed mostly to the genital area in some people. Symptoms also include fever, body aches, swollen lymph nodes and fatigue. The time from infection to the presentation of symptoms is usually seven to 14 days, but may range from five to 21 days total. “The rash goes through stages where it shows up as a pimple and evolves into a pustule. That pustule then opens up and scabs over before healing,” said Sayers.
