integration, as well as more advanced areas of cooperation for countries further along on the Pathway to Partnership. Sweden is one of the newest members of the U.S.’ SSA sharing program, having signed the agreement Apr. 6, 2022, to further strengthen the Transatlantic link between Sweden and the U.S. “For over seven decades, the bond between Europe and North America has made the North Atlantic Treaty Organization one of the strongest military alliances in history,” said Dickinson. “The alliance has proved the undefeatable strength of its integration across land, air and sea, and now, we are extending that integration to space. I want to thank Finland, Poland and Sweden for hosting me and the State Space

Agency of Ukraine for meeting me in Poland. The meetings held and the information shared this week will continue to lead to stronger partnerships and integration in the future.” Finland, Poland, Sweden, and Ukraine exemplify the success of USSPACECOM’s Pathway to Partnership. All four countries have a Space Situational Awareness sharing agreement with USSPACECOM and will participate in the Global Sentinel capstone event July 24-Aug 3 at Vandenberg AFB, Calif., alongside more than 20 other allied and partner nations. USSPACECOM conducts operations in, from, and to space to deter conflict, and if necessary, defeat aggression, deliver space combat power for the Joint and Combined force, and defend U.S. vital interests with allies and partners.

Air Force prepares for newly approved COVID-19 vaccine: Novavax provides new option for unvaccinated Airmen, Guardians By Staff Writer Air Force Surgeon General Public Affairs

FALLS CHURCH, Va. — The Air Force will soon have the Novavax COVID-19 vaccine available after the U.S Food and Drug Administration authorized it for emergency use and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention endorsed it as another primary series option for adults ages 18 years and older. The Novavax COVID-19 vaccine, which will be available in the coming weeks, is a two-dose vaccine that presents a new option for those who have been hesitant to receive the FDA fully licensed and approved mRNA vaccines, Pfizer Cominarty and Moderna Spikevax. One distinction from mRNA vaccines is that Novavax uses a traditional platform similar to other vaccines that Airmen and Guardians may have already received. “Most Airmen and Guardians have already received vaccines using similar technology as the Novavax COVID-19 vaccine, like the hepatitis B vaccine, which is a Department of Defense requirement. Other vaccines produced with similar technology are the human papilloma virus vaccine, and even one of the flu vaccines,” said Lt. Col. David Sayers, Chief, Preventive Medicine, Air Force Medical Readiness Agency. “The Novavax COVID-19 vaccine uses technology that has been around since the 1980s. Not only do we have effectiveness and safety data from the Novavax clinical trials, but we also have decades of experience with this

type of vaccine.” In clinical trials performed before the emergence of the delta and omicron variants, Novavax was 90.4% effective in preventing mild, moderate or severe COVID-19 infections. Unvaccinated service members must receive the two doses, the primary series, taken at least 21 days apart to be considered fully vaccinated and meet the Department of Defense COVID-19 vaccine requirement.

Novavax may accommodate those with sincerely held beliefs who felt limited in their options with the previous vaccine offering,” — Maj. Gen. Sharon Bannister, Air Force Surgeon General Medical Operations director.

Individuals who are in the process of seeking a religious accommodation exemption can elect to use any FDA-approved COVID-19 vaccination under emergency use or fully licensed vaccine, which now includes Novavax, at any point in the review process

to comply with this vaccine requirement. “Novavax may accommodate those with sincerely held beliefs who felt limited in their options with the previous vaccine offering,” said Maj. Gen. Sharon Bannister, Air Force Surgeon General Medical Operations director. As COVID-19 cases continue to rise, Air Force medical leaders are urging all Airmen, Guardians and their families to get vaccinated against COVID-19 and stay up-to-date on their vaccinations. Approved vaccines have been proven to decrease the chances of severe COVID-19, and prevent hospitalizations and death. Currently, the United States is averaging more than 120,000 daily reported cases and more than 350 deaths per day, driven by the new, more contagious variant called BA.5. “Unlike the flu, which circulates seasonally, SARSCoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, has circulated continuously over the last two and a half years,” said Sayers. “It is important to get vaccinated and stay upto-date with your vaccines to limit severe disease. The Novavax COVID-19 vaccine is another option to ensure we can protect our members and protect the mission.” For more information, Airmen and Guardians can reach out to their local military treatment facilities. Additional information on vaccine appointments and testing can be found here: https://tricare. mil/HealthWellness/HealthyLiving/Coronavirus/ COVID-Vaccine.

Peterson SFB Fire Department trains with COS By Kristian DePue, Staff Writer Space Base Delta 1 Public Affairs

PETERSON SPACE FORCE BASE, Colo. —In the morning hours of Tuesday, July 19, 2022, personnel from the Peterson Space Force Base Fire Department met with the Colorado Springs Fire Dept. for an emergency training exercise executed at the Federal Aviation Administration Air Traffic Control Tower at Peterson SFB, Colorado. “The purpose of this training is to validate Peterson Fire and emergency services’ capability to respond to and mitigate emergencies at the FAA Air Traffic Control Tower, specifically situations which involve the evacuation of personnel from the tower cab,” said Christopher Waldrip, 21st Civil Engineer Squadron assistant fire chief. “Peterson does not have a ladder truck assigned. However, we have a mutual aid agreement with the Colorado Springs Fire Department to provide emergency response assistance. They are the closest department with an apparatus capable of reaching the ATC tower.” That aid agreement truly is mutual; the Peterson SFB Fire Dept. serves and protects not only Peterson SFB, but also the city of Colorado Springs. “Both agencies respond to emergencies at the Colorado Springs Airport, where we integrate seamlessly,” said Waldrip. “Additionally, Peterson Fire has responded to emergencies on Powers Blvd. and areas surrounding Peterson [Space Force Base].” The training simulated a fire emergency in the air traffic control tower, which is tightly controlled due to the work performed there, requiring increased coordination.

CSFD’s role was to access the balcony on the sixth floor with Truck 8. Truck 8 is one of six similar ladder trucks within Colorado Springs, and is the closest to Peterson SFB — housed at Station 8, located at S. Academy Boulevard and Airport Road. “If there was a fire in the stairwell or elevator, and personnel working in the tower could not get down, Peterson Fire would utilize our ladder truck to help facilitate rescues,” said CSFD’s Lt. Todd Gripentrog. “The ladder can reach 109 feet up, depending on how close the truck can position itself.” Joint emergency trainings work to ensure interoperability in response efforts, and the drill on July 19 reinforced the relationship between CSFD and Peterson Fire as well as their ability to operate in conjunction. “The exercise was a multi-point check-in on our emergency response capabilities,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Chace Smith, 21st Civil Engineer Squadron crew chief. “Doing the drill not only allowed us to see where we are as a fire department, but provided a clear view of where we’re going. Training exercises enhance our skills and knowledge so we can better serve Peterson [Space Force Base] and Colorado Springs.” Smith added that his biggest take-aways from the training were a reminder of how crucial equipment setup and utilization is to the success of the mission, as well as the importance of both physical and mental fortitude. “We accomplished our training goals,” added Gripentrog. “We’ll take what we learned and pass it along, so that whichever crew may end up responding will be aware of all the intricacies involved. We plan to continue joint trainings in the future.”

Your next chapter is worth writing. In a Veteran’s life, each new day presents an opportunity to write the story of their journey. The next chapter in a life story can be one full of hope, health, opportunity, and fulfillment. The transition from military service can be difficult for any Veteran or Veteran family member. And, whether that transition occurred last week, ten years ago, or 60 years ago, the challenges remain the same. U.S. Space Force Photo by Kristian DePue

GearFit shortens feedback loop By Daryl Mayer Air Force Life Cycle Management Center Public Affairs

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio (AFNS) — A new application called GearFit is giving Airmen a direct line to share feedback on fitment and utility of the gear they wear to perform their missions. Members can input their comments on body armor, harnesses, helmets and more, and they are instantly shared with the development teams responsible for designing and acquiring that gear. Taylor Harrison, Combat Ready Airman program manager in the Agile Combat Support Directorate, joined with Nicole Wright and Sarah Tress with Skylight Digital, on an episode of AFLCMC’s Leadership Log podcast to discuss the new application. “This program has been super amazing because we are getting feedback from our Airmen, the end user,”

Harrison said. “We are not just delivering and hoping that we hit the mark.” This application, and the Combat Ready Airman program, is designed to help the 91% of Air Force jobs that do not include aircrew members or special operations, which already have programs focused on their needs. “We focus solely on maintainers, Security Forces, medics, anybody that isn’t aircrew or special ops,” Harrison said. Currently, equipment is identified at the unit level, which leads to a lack of consistency for gear across the Air Force. The Combat Ready Airman program is looking to ensure all gear is standardized. That could be simply providing a list of approved body armor vests that units can pick from. GearFit came about in 2019 as the result of an AFWERX challenge. Specifically, it was designed to

collect anthropometric data on female Airmen to better define requirements and specifications of gear being acquired from industry. The program is now expanded to collect data from male Airmen as well. Nicole Wright, GearFit product manager, led the team from Skylight Digital that collaborated with Air Force developers at the Business and Enterprise Directorate’s BESPIN soft ware factory to develop the GearFit website. “We are working on building out the GearFit website and experience. We are continuously releasing new features and iterations on feedback we hear to get closer to optimizing the goals that Taylor was talking about,” Wright said. Personal safety tips to survive an active shooter situation By Robert Doyle 934th Airlift Wing Anti-Terrorism Program Manager

MINNEAPOLIS-ST.PAUL AIR RESERVE STATION — Subways, parades, shopping malls, grocery stores, hospitals, work centers, movie theaters, churches and schools. Places we view as “common places” and each of which have unfortunately been the scene of mass violence in 2022. According to data from the Gun Violence Archive, as of 5 Jul 22, there have been at least 314 mass shooting incidents in the 186 days of this year. The Gun Violence Archive defines mass shootings as four or more people shot or killed, not including the shooter. Terrorist and Domestic Violent Extremist organizations are using recent events in their propaganda campaigns to encourage lone actors to commit these attacks. They’re spreading ideology and how-to guides through social media and publications. Increasingly, children are being targeted in these information campaigns to incite violence. Parents should be aware of what their children are viewing online because bad actors are recruiting through known social media forums and video game sites. Once connected, they send kids links to other sites. Incidents of mass violence are often unpredictable and evolve quickly. Regardless of your political affiliation and beliefs or causes on mass violence; it’s important for you to have a plan when you leave home. Consider the following: - Maintain situational awareness.

Air Force’s 75th anniversary celebrated by allies, partners at international air show By Staff Writer Secretary of the Air Force Public Affairs

RAF FAIRFORD, United Kingdom (AFNS) — One of the largest air shows in the world has returned and featured a special tribute this year to the U.S. Air Force as it approaches its 75th anniversary. The Royal International Air Tattoo was held at RAF Fairford, July 15-17. Airmen and aircraft from around the globe, including the highest military and civilian leaders from the U.S. Air and Space Forces, came together for the 2022 event. RIAT showcased the historically close ties between American and British air services by including a special tribute in honor of the U.S. Air Force’s anniversary. “Having the Department of the Air Force’s 75th Anniversary recognized at RIAT is truly an honor and shows the depth of the DAF and RAF’s special partnership,” said Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall. “For the last 75 years, our two great air forces have worked side by side in defense of our great nations and our shared values.” Joining Kendall at the event were Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. CQ Brown, Jr., and Chief of Space Operations Gen. John W. “Jay” Raymond. Their ap-

pearances further underscored the Air and Space Forces’ commitment to the United Kingdom, NATO, and transatlantic security, the officials said. Taking place after a two-year hiatus because of the pandemic, Kendall and other senior leaders said the event remains a symbol of the Department of the Air Force’s commitment to helping ensure the security of Europe and maintaining the historically strong alliance with Britain and other allies across Europe. “Events like RIAT and our multilateral and NATO exercises allow us to engage with multiple partners and allies simultaneously,” Raymond said. “These events not only help us to make the most of our time but also allow us a large forum to learn from each other.” This year’s event brought a multitude of U.S. Air Force aircraft, including the CV-22B Osprey, E-4B, KC135R Stratotanker, KC-46A Pegasus, F-16CM Fighting Falcon, F-35A Lightning II, MC-130J Commando II, U-2S Dragon Lady and F-15E Strike Eagle. “Our Airmen, past and present, are indispensable teammates to our allies and partners,” Brown said. “Having the opportunity to showcase our aircraft and Airmen at air shows like RIAT gives our allies and their nations a look into the incredible force that is the U.S. Air Force. We look forward to participating in RIAT for years to come.”

While RIAT is based in Europe, it has become an international forum with key allies and partners from a variety of regions. The senior leaders took the opportunity to engage counterparts from their respective Air and Space Forces to include Australia, Canada, Finland, France, Greece, India, Israel, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, Sweden, South Korea, United Arab Emirates, and United Kingdom. Discussion topics ranged from increased interoperability to participation in upcoming exercises. Also in attendance were the Royal Jordanian Air Force, the Kuwait Air Force, the Royal Air Force of Oman and the Qatar Emiri Air Force. The Royal International Air Tattoo was first held in 1971, attracting 100 aircraft. Today, it’s considered the largest military airshow in the world and draws an estimated 170,000 spectators. The U.S. Air Force has played a part in some of its most notable moments, including in 1997 when an Air Force B-2 Spirit stealth bomber was displayed and landed for the first time outside of the U.S. Starting the day after RIAT concluded, the weeklong Farnborough International Air Show was held in Farnborough, England, with U.S. Air Force participation further showcasing the service’s commitment to international allies and partners.
