John Weiss, owner and publisher of the successful Colorado Springs Independent alternative newsweekly, also happened to be a Manitou resident. He understood the value of a hyperlocal newspaper to any small town, and he couldn’t bear the thought of watching the Bulletin slowly witherWeissaway.had created a remarkable, sustained success story since the 1990s

with the Independent, then made another bold move in 2012 by purchasing the Colorado Springs Business Journal. Nearly two years later, he pounced on the idea of acquiring the Bulletin, with me as partner. My role was to oversee upgrading content while he worked on the business side. We took over the Bulletin in April 2014, and the journey since then has turned into quite a rollercoaster ride. This

About a decade ago, the Pikes Peak Bulletin went through a perilous time, no different from what had been happening to community newspapers throughout America.Thisweekly publication, carrying on a proud tradition that dated to the late 1800s, reached an alarming point of shrinking revenues and an uncertain future. The owners were not sure which way to turn, and Manitou Springs readers were smart enough to notice the deterioration.

For the seventh year, they strapped on 60 pounds of gear and climbed the 2,700-plus steps of the Manitou Incline. They did it to honor the 343 firefighters who gave their lives to save others that horrific day. They did it to express their gratitude and respect for people they never knew.

That brings us to the Bulletin. With a new printing contract that takes effect in October, the costs for producing this weekly paper have escalated to the point where we simply can’t continue as we have since 2014. Something has to change, and soon.

Another option might mean a much-reduced print product, possibly with more content online. Perhaps the Bulletin wouldn’t be a stand-alone paper anymore, but it still could provide Manitou news, cultural and sports coverage.

newspaper has flourished once more, and the Manitou Springs audience has embraced and remained loyal to the Bulletin — even though many longtime readers still instinctively call it by its previous, more historic name, the Pikes Peak Journal.

City Briefs

If you might be the next hero, the moment is now. door is still open, and nobody wants to close it.

We appear to have three possible outcomes. One of them, shutting down the Bulletin, is not palatable. If that happened, Manitou would join thousands of American cities and towns that are now “news

deserts” with no coverage of local government, lower voter turnout and eroded public awareness.

A blood drive is scheduled for 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28, at Memorial Hall (606 Manitou Ave.). Please take the time to participate, as there is an urgent need for blood.

Alas, nothing in life is guaranteed. What readers never realized along the way was how Weiss, his other company resources and his unfailing generosity kept the Bulletin (and the Independent/Business Journal) alive through the COVID-related downturn and sliding revenues.

Time is short. Discussions are ongoing, and decisions are imminent. But the door is still open, and nobody wants to close it.

The other main writers, including Jeanne Davant, the late Jack Elder, Larry Ferguson (also a former editor), Daniel Mohrmann and Bridgett Harris, have done theirWepart.also

In recent months, though, Weiss has decided the time has come to look for other challenges. He’s ready to find a graceful exit from newspapers, though he’s not abruptly ending his financial commitment. He is continuing to provide funding as the parent company takes bold steps toward becoming a nonprofit with several other exciting changes coming in 2023.

Bears are about to get very active in Colorado as they search for food before hibernating this winter. At this time, they’re likely to forage for human food, trash and fruit trees in urban areas. Their instinct to eat can overcome any fear of humans. They can sniff out potential food sources as much as five miles away. Barbeque grills, unsecured trash and pet food can lure them into cities. They have been able to open car doors when searching for food.

Thanks mainly to current editor Rhonda Van Pelt, who has done such a superlative job for the past seven years, the Bulletin has continued to cover City Council, School District 14, local businesses and the arts/entertainment scene.

Then there is the best-case possibility, which is the underlying reason for this column. Weiss has floated the idea of offering the Bulletin to the people of Manitou Springs as a gift, if enough residents would come forward to support it as a new nonprofit.

That would require a committed group of community members willing to serve actively on the nonprofit’s board. It also would need a local-minded individual or team to take charge in a publisher/ sales connectormanager/communityrole.Perhapsa2022version of a community-minded owner/ entrepreneur is out there — some one who cares about Manitou Springs, wants to save its newspaper and has the wherewithal to make a solid, lasting investment. If that’s you, this is yourWithchance.enough community support from advertisers, donors and potential board members, the Bulletin could have a new life. Also, the Indepen dent still is willing to partner with the right individual or team.

the bright side, here’s a related development. I have gone through the Secretary of State’s Office to acquire the rights to the dormant name of Pikes Peak Journal, thinking the next chapter of Manitou Springs’ newspaper might benefit from a “back to the future” theme.

I am emailing you to inform you of a growing problem in your city. We love Colorado and visit three times per year. Our friends have never been to Manitou, so on Friday, Sept. 2, we decided to show them around.

An attendant was helping people at the kiosk. We used the online services, paid $10, parked in the middle of the parking lot and went shopping and visiting the Arcade, mineral springs and Miramont Castle. We stopped at the bar by the Arcade and, while there, our friends started receiving alerts on their phone that charges were being made on cards that were in her spare bag. I immediately ran from the bar to the parking lot and saw my passenger sliding-door window had been smashed out, my friend’s bag was gone and the van had been rummaged through.

It was high watermark of the COVID-19 pandemic, and Katie, an art teacher at Harrison High School, and Justine, who was self-employed, sought a career change.

Music from rock band Phish fills the air, and abstract and nature paintings decorate the walls. Assorted plants, books, couches, chairs, hand-painted green and orange plant murals and a turn-of-the-century wooden phone booth give the café a relaxed environment. Face masks are not required.

“We would like to give a shout-out to everyone who has helped us make the Loft what it is, including our friends, local vendors, our friends at Old World Bagel and our most loyal customer, Gary Miller,” Katie said.

“It always had a consistent crowd of loyal Manitoids and we didn’t want to scare people with big changes right away,” Katie said.

“The pandemic had drastically affected the classroom experience and my overall well-being as an educator. Justin and I were in the right place at the right time and desperate for an opportunity,” said Katie.

The café interior boasts all the comforts of home.

“We started a business during a time that is challenging for anyone in the food and beverage industry. Between COVID closures, supply chain disruption and soaring food and packaging costs, we got a taste of how hard it can be (right) off the bat,” Katie Creatingsaid.aspace for the community to connect with their neighbors is the best part about serving the public, she said.

The Snyders hope to add beer and wine beverages to their menu, and expand the playing time of local bands that have performed there. Both agree their efforts have paid dividends, resulting in 5-star ratings from many repeat patrons.

The Snyders, who now live in Cascade, inherited the company name when they bought the café and decided to continue its legacy.

“We do not offer Wi-Fi and prefer that the Loft does not become another typical coffee shop work space. There is a lost art of face-to-face communications and we hope to bring that back,” Katie said.

Katie said they usually add something new each week, be it new coffee-brewing equipment or furniture to better accommo date its growing customer base.

n fall 2020, Justin and Katie Snyder, then Manitou Springs residents, were relaxing at The Loft Espresso when they happened on an opportunity to buy the establishment.

In the early stages of the season, Manitou Springs boys soccer coach Ben Mack identified Vanguard as one of the tougher teams that his Mustangs would face this year.

Moore found the end zone for the second time of the night on the game-winning touchdown late in the fourth quarter, but the close call is something that the team as a whole would like to eliminate in the coming weeks.

The Mustangs travel to Rocky Ford on Friday, Sept. 16, and are on the road Sept. 24 against Prospect Ridge Academy in Broomfield. They host Woodland Park on Sept. 30 for the homecoming game.

They faced another tough game on Sept. 13 as they took on Thomas MacLaren, the top-ranked team in this week’s CHSAANow.com poll.

“Coming back is huge, especially in soccer,” Smith said. “Every goal brings momentum towards you and, if we had come out on top, that would’ve been awesome. But now that we know we can battle back, it shows in more important games that we can come out and win.”

The best landscape painters know how to depict light in all its glory, illuminating rocks and trees, grasses and water and sky. Count Denton among them.

“It may sound campy, but if somebody finds something that really moves them and it ends up going to a home and is cherished for whatever length of time, that’s really the big thing.”

For him, art is not about the money, it’s about getting his work into homes so he can “continue my obsession.”Andwhat is he feeling as he “Youpaints?know, it varies. Denton tried playing football, but wasn’t very good, he said. A career in science or on the railroad, like his father, didn’t appeal to him, so he decided in 1968 to devote himself to art.“I’ve been running with scissors ever since then,” he said. “I’ve averaged at least one painting every two weeks since the 1960s.”Healso spent 40 years teaching art at schools around the country, including an

Denton has learned the hard way that painting en plein air — outdoors — can lead to damaged paintings. Anything larger than 4 feet in any dimension stays in his Westside home studio.

Council prioritizes planning, zoning goals By Jack Elder City Finance Director Mike Leslie reported to City Council at Tuesday’s work session that there was approximately $32,000 available for implementing changes in the zoning code and related public processes for 2005. The recommendations submitted by consultant HB&A were itemized and came with the cost of each item included. HB&A will be contracted to perform the work of revising the code and establishing revised processes so the item even though the firm’s involvement to date eliminates the requirement for a new bidding process. The 12 items on the HB&A list total nearly $91,000. HB&A also indicated several, mostly procedural changes, that can contribute to more efficient and less contentious process that can be implemented in-house at no cost. Operating within the $32,000 available this year, council identified the creation of approval criteria for each zoning category, including downtown, projected to cost $20,000; revising and updating the public process, projected to cost $9,100; reevaluating the setback requirements in the general residential zone, which consumes as much as one-third of planning staff’s time, projected to cost $5,000 and adopting and implementing the National Fire Prevention Association’s standard 299 at projected cost of $3,600. The NFPA standard would provide clear-cut guidelines, especially for construction on upslopes, where none exist now and thereby eliminate considerable negotiation, reports, hearings and general misunderstanding and arguments.Representatives of HB&A, City Council and members of city staff will now meet to finalize costs. At press time, it was not anticipated that further formalize action would be necessary to start the zoning and planning revision process as outlined Tuesday. Council nears administrator choice Following Monday’s open house with finalists for the City Administrator position and closed executive session Tuesday to review the candidates and the interview process that took place Monday, City Council appears to be embarking on final discussions with one or more candidates. Details from council executive sessions are, by law, not made public The four finalists are Elizabeth Black, District Manager for the Copper Mountain Consolidated Metropolitan District in Colorado; David Blanchard, City Manager of Blackhawk, Colo., from 2000 to 2003; Catherine Green, Director of Planning for the City of Pueblo from 1992 to 2004; and, Rick Sonnenburg, Town Manager of Monument. Bentley Henderson, Assistant Town Manager of Carbondale, Colo., withdrew from the process Friday The candidates were interviewed Monday by panel of Colorado city managers and by City Council. The four then met with members of the public and with members of city staff. No public timetable has been set for the final hiring.

Hi world, meet the A Team, Anchovy and Antares! Anchovy is the soft gray Russian Blue mix kitten and Antares his sleek black brother with the white locket. Antares is the leader who has his brother Anchovy’s back when it comes to new situations and people. They’re full of purrs, especially Anchovy, who gets Antares to come join in the cuddles when his motor revs up. Both have been around other cats and cat-savvy dogs and will do best in a family with older children. At about 3 months old, they can be adopted for $210 for both, which includes their neuters, vaccinations, microchips, food and litter starter kit, and free well-kitty checkups.

Happy Cats Haven – Pet of the Week

Hi, everyone! I’m Buddy and I have a lot of energy! I’m a 2-year-old Australian Shepherd mix looking for a home that can give me daily exercise, toys and mental stimulation to burn off my energy. I can be shy at first, so a mature home would be best for me where I can learn good manners. HSPPR staff describes me as a “good boy,” but I can’t resist chasing cats so I may do best in a home without other small animals. My adoption is $250, and I come with a voucher for a veterinary exam, vaccinations, 30 days of pet health insurance and a microchip, and I will be neutered. Just ask for Buddy (1601432).
