There are few major cities that are laid out like Colorado Springs, and that introduces certain challenges in engaging with the excellence that the city has to offer. The Downtown corridor, though lively and expanding, is downright petite for a city with nearly half a million residents. But between that small urban core and the city’s massive suburban sprawl, enjoying the Springs’ arts and cultural scene benefits from a little insight and direction. For a broad spectrum look at things, the Colorado Springs Indy (which, by way of disclosure, shares ownership with the Colorado Springs Military Newspaper Group) publishes an annual Insider guide to the region. Those hoping to make plans would do well to consult Peak Radar (peakradar.com), a cultural calendar maintained by the Cultural Office of the Pikes Peak Region, or COPPeR. Peak Radar serves as a searchable directory of upcoming events, encompassing food and drink, gallery and performing arts, nature, history and more. They make it easy to sort and show free or family-friendly events.

As for where to look for or expect arts excellence, that sprawling, patchwork suburban structure means it’s possible to find something wonderful tucked away in most neighborhoods. A few do stand out, though. Downtown Colorado Springs and Manitou Springs (a separate city, but part of the Springs metropolitan area) are both state-certified Creative Districts. This formal recognition by the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade means that both meet certain standards for activities, amenities and community buy-in such that the state offers support and resources for District organizers to better meet the needs of the arts community and visitors to the District. Creative Districts also have to be walkable, so it’s easy to find cool things to check out and expand an arts or culture outing. There’s a particularly good time for that, too — but more on that later. A fi ne way for folks to get downtown Springs under their feet is the Art on the Streets program (downtowncs.com/live/artsand-entertainment/aots/), a juried exhibition run by the Downtown Partnership of

Colorado Springs that brings new pieces of public art to the Springs every year. The Downtown Partnership offers a self-guided tour with artist commentary and digital map available via an app, as well as $10 guided tours on the first Saturday of each month. As for what’s new, despite COVID-19 lockdowns and restrictions, several food and beverage businesses in downtown Springs have opened with or added stages for live music and entertainment, such as south downtown food hall COATI (514 S. Tejon St., coatiuprise.com), Latin-inspired café and restaurant Epiphany (32 S. Tejon St., Suite 200, epiphanycos.com) and backroom jazz joint Blue at Red Gravy (23 S. Tejon St., redgravyco.com/blue-at-red-gravy-2) to name a few. Manitou has a variety of public art as well, and the valley it’s nestled in has a Disney village-like charm up and down, with a sprawling arcade, mineral water springs for drinking and cozy creek-side public parks. Check out gates, fences and other public works by local community arts organization Concrete Couch (concretecouch.org), who are perhaps the easiest way to get involved

in the local arts community. While Manitou’s cultural spots tend to have been around for a while — Manitou’s many seasonal festivals are not to be missed — it’s worth noting new live music venue and pizza spot Lulu’s Downstairs (107 Manitou Ave., Manitou Springs, lulusdownstairs.com), which is on the eastern end of the city. Beyond the two Creative Districts, the region hosts many other arts districts that do not have formal state recognition. North of the Springs proper, the towns of Monument and Palmer Lake host a variety of galleries, not least of which is the Tri-Lakes Center for the Arts (34 Hwy 105, Palmer Lake, trilakesarts.org). East of downtown Springs, the Knob Hill Urban Arts District initiative has turned a stretch of Platte Avenue into an open-air gallery thanks to the work of local muralists, and beyond live music at The Black Sheep (2106 E. Platte Ave., blacksheeprocks.com) and the newer Vultures (2100 E. Platte Ave., facebook.com/vulturescos), the neighborhood also hosts a variety of small businesses. And while Old Colorado City on the west side of town also lacks that formal certification, its tree-lined streets host galleries, restaurants, shopping and museums, most of which are in gorgeous old brick buildings. Old Colorado City is different from other artistic districts in the area, because while it’s not a certified creative district, it is part of the Avenue Creative Circuit (creativecircuit.org), along with the Downtown and Manitou Creative Districts. All three are located along Colorado Avenue, which becomes Manitou Avenue in Manitou Springs, and for most of the year, all three have simultaneous monthly arts celebrations on the first Friday of each month. First Fridays, which formally run from 5-8 p.m., see galleries, museums, restaurants, performance venues and more launching new exhibitions, special events, snacks and performances, typically all free to enter. Downtown Springs and Manitou both celebrate year-round, but Old Colorado City only participates in April through December. On First Fridays, certain storefronts and alleys come alive with conversation, laughter and music, little places where

an exhibition or performance is grabbing people’s attention; it’s easy to make an evening of spontaneous stops and simply follow the vibe. It’s also easy to do research and make a plan thanks to resources from COPPeR, the Downtown Partnership, the Manitou Springs Arts Council and other members of the local arts community. For service members, veterans and their families, it’s worth looking into the referral-based Military Arts Connection (militaryartsconnection.org) program, which is run by the

Serving those who serve in Colorado Springs

Smart Way to Recycle and Save!

I know how hard it is being a military family. My husband retired from the Air Force after 26 years of service. Every cent counts when taking care of your family. That’s why there is Just Between Friends (JBF) Colorado Springs. JBF is proud to bring you community-building sales where your family can save hundreds of dollars (and make hundreds of dollars) on everything you need to raise confident, stylish, good-looking kids! JBF helps ease the financial burden for not only thousands of military families but over a million families each year nationwide. Parents are becoming increasingly aware that by taking good care of their family’s things, they can recycle items by selling them to make a little extra money. It’s recycling in such a fun, practical and community serving way.

A Good Fit for Military Families

With more than 300 sales in 32 states across the county, military families are able to take advantage of JBF sales no matter where you are stationed. Sales are held in the Spring and Fall so you can stock up on everything you need for the season. The next Colorado Springs sale is April 6-10 at the Colorado Springs Event Center. We offer a military presale to thank you for your service on April 5.

A Passion for Making Money (and getting great deals!)

One of the main reasons for JBF’s success and steady growth is it’s loyal consignors (sellers), shoppers and staff’s enthusiasm for saving and making money. JBF sellers make 60% of their items selling price. Sellers help out families by donating unsold items after the sale to local charities. Not only do you put cash in your pocket, but all sellers get to shop early to get the best deals. JBF Colorado Springs accepts and sells gently used maternity items, children’s clothing, toys, equipment, baby gear, toys, books and more. You don’t want to miss the sale in April! City King Suite at Kinship Landing dowtown Colorado Springs.

By Kristian DePue You’ve likely heard the term “staycation,” as it’s no longer a novel concept: the word is said to have originated in 2005 while others say it was 2008, when gas prices were record high. The meaning is self-evident: a vacation spent in your hometown (or nearby). Many benefits are to be had with a staycation, such as reduced travel time, no jet lag, less expensive, supporting your local economy, and falling in love with your community. Fortunately, there is a generous array of creative staycation ideas for locals in Colorado Springs who are in need of a restful respite in the region. You can take a soak at Sunwater Spa in Manitou Springs. Hike the plethora of paths within North Cheyenne Cañon. Take a ride the cog railway up to the top of America’s Mountain and experience the new Pikes Peak Visitor’s Center at 14,000 feet. View hippos, elephants and giraffes at the amazing Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. This spring, start cheering the Switchbacks Football Club at Weidner Field. As the weather hits par, you can play the links at the many fairways available, which include Patty Jewett Golf Course and Kissing Camels Golf Club. And, of course, there’s the incredible, innovative Olympic & Paralympic Museum right in the heart of Olympic City U.S.A. There’s much more to explore than what follows. This is a “staycation primer,” only a short-list guide as a jumping-off point to create an itinerary in your hometown. A conversation with Kinship Landing’s Bobby Mikulas Bobby Mikulas is one of the founders of Kinship Landing, a boutique hotel in downtown Colorado Springs with a public venue on the entrance floor called Homa Café, for which he tapped culinary creative Jay Gust. “Brian Blasnek is our executive chef and Jay Gust is our food and beverage director,” said Mikulas. “Both these guys are great.

They worked together to bring our culinary inspirations we gathered from travel and merged them with reality, resulting in inspired, locally sourced, and a masterfully crafted menu that is for ‘the healthy and hungry.’” Mikulas took the time to talk about his unique hotel and his suggestions for a staycation in the Springs. How did Kinship Landing come about? It’s hard to pinpoint, but a catalyzing experience that pushed my wife and I towards Kinship Landing was taking a year off. We traveled through 17 countries, and stayed in all sorts of fun and funky accommodations: hostels, bungalows, homesteads and Airbnbs. That trip really was a deep motivation to bring a different hospitality back to Colorado Springs. We’ve always had a passion for hospitality, but not on a professional or industry level until after that year-long traveling experience. What do you think Kinship Landing uniquely offers Colorado Springs? Initially, I was reluctant to come back to Colorado Springs, but we just fell in love with the community. We found great art and wonderful food. The idea was for Kinship Landing to be an insertion into the best of the Pikes Peak region. We really love to be that hand-off: where you have a great place to crash, like staying at a friend’s, and we’re going peel back the layers to find what you want out of this area: where to hike, where to bike, great happy hours, whatever you are looking for. We’ve gone out of our way to gain and provide insight on a local perspective. We’ve tried to make our first floor not like a hotel scene, but first and foremost for locals. It’s a place where you’re going to run into people you know here in the Springs. Our lodging is also unique, with much different rooms compared to a typical ho-

tel. We’ve designed and built all the mill work. We have local art throughout, sourced from Denver and Colorado Springs. We are a boutique hotel, but we also offer a shared bunk room taking the best from what we’ve experienced in hostels and pushing away the rest. What would you recommend to readers in the Pikes Peak region if they were to do a staycation at Kinship Landing? I’d probably mine a little, asking some qualifying questions to figure out which direction to point. If you’re really looking to get outside and get after it, I love interacting with the Pikes Peak massive. We have this huge 14er in our backyard, and it’s got climbing, skiing and snowshoeing. If you’re into running or biking, there are some beautiful trails where the sun hits. Section 16 is a great year-round trail; it’s a little challenging, allowing a sense of accomplishment. For foodie-types, I’d put together a list. There are some fun spots that don’t get as much recognition as they should. Personally, I really love The Principal’s Office and the whole Ivywild School experience. I also suggest some performing arts, whether that be a comedy show at Three E’s Comedy Club or a performance at The Black Sheep or the Pikes Peak Performing Arts Center. We also have an explore page on our website. We tapped our staff, asking them what a killer day in Colorado Springs looks like for them. Kinship Landing 415 S. Boss endeavors to enrich single soldier life

By Scott Prater

In the past few years, Fort Carson single Soldiers have skydived, ziplined, rafted rivers and raced go-karts. They’ve also helped build houses with Habitat for Humanity, taught language classes and volunteered with various local community helping agencies. Lately, through an organization at Fort Carson known as Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers (BOSS), they’ve participated in classes that build life skills — they’ve learned to cook during a course taught by a local chef, for example, learned to perform basic maintenance on their cars and studied with experienced mentors in preparation for promotion board sessions. The program is far cry from what is used to be just a few years ago. Many military installations across the U.S. have developed a BOSS program, but as Cpl. Devon Douglas says, BOSS offerings can vary widely across installations, depending on leadership, commitment and participation, among other factors. Douglas arrived at Fort Carson early in 2020 as the BOSS president and promptly went to work engaging Soldiers and building awareness about the program. “As I went around the post talking to leaders and soldiers, the biggest thing I learned was that most people thought BOSS was just a party group,” he said. “So, my first task as president here was widening the program’s scope and engaging more Soldiers.” Since 2020, Fort Carson’s BOSS program has planned and coordinated more than 200 events. Not bad for an organization that formerly averaged less than 15 events a year.

“Forty-six percent of Army Soldiers are single,” Douglas said. “Really, the program exists to make sure that 46 percent of our population is treated like family. So, our initial vision was to make the program better.” BOSS connected soldiers have also logged 3,500 hours of volunteer work in those two years, while Douglas and new program leaders have amped up BOSS unit representatives from 28 to 176. “Having unit reps allows us to disseminate information down to those frontline soldiers, who may not be aware of how we can help make their lives better,” Douglas said. “Our reps can help soldiers learn about our activities and our classes or they can simply be someone a soldier may feel more comfortable sharing life’s difficulties with.” Program presidents at most installations are active-duty soldiers who stay in the position for two to three years. Douglas has since moved on and the program has a new president now, but Army leaders thought so much of his efforts at Fort Carson that they’ve made him a regional director for BOSS programs — a region that includes 16 installations. In the meantime, the organization has gained a new civilian advisor, who provides program continuity as military members change duty stations. Gia Gillotte-Taylor joined the group in 2021 and handles administrative duties, advises BOSS leadership and organizes projects and events. “Continuity is important even if its just to keep a program’s momentum going,” Douglas said. “BOSS programs at different posts may be great for a couple of years, but then become less effective after a leadership change. that civilian continuity helps ensure standards and quality.” Gillotte-Taylor and Sgt. Antony Zuniga, new Fort Carson BOSS president, were instrumental in developing the program’s promotion study-board activity, which brings Soldiers who are preparing for promotion together with experienced mentors. The mentors coach their younger counterparts on a number of important aspects related to promotion boards, from studying the most relevant topics to practicing their performance in front of promotion panels. “We’ve had different mentors over the past months and all of them have proven helpful for students,” said Gia GillotteTaylor. “The idea is for those experienced NCOs to pass on some of their knowledge to those Soldiers who have never been through a promotion board. Mentors help Soldiers choose the best study materials and topics, and they can relay information about what to expect and what to emphasize during their study time.” As a BOSS president at two previous Army posts, Douglas said, each location presents unique challenges for program leaders. Though it may seem easy to simply recreate an organization based on past success, there are many aspects that come into play at each installation. “Here at Fort Carson, we’ve been fortunate to get solid buy-in from Army leadership,” he said. “It’s more difficult to run a program without that support. Also, BOSS activities depend a lot on the partnerships you manage to build in the local community, especially with activities. There are lots of negotiations that go on with local businesses when you’re attempting to plan an activity for what could be a large group, or even a small group. Then you have to consider how many participants you may have, arrange transportation and other things. Every place is different.

Christopher Devlin, center, informs students about vehicles during a Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers “Winter Readiness” class at the ASC in January. There is no cookie-cutter approach for success, so leaders need to be flexible and innovative.” The different activities are part of the program’s three pillars: quality of life, community service and recreation and leisure. The key is trying to find a balance between them. “I wanted to make sure we shined on all three pillars,” Douglas said. “Our life skills programs are designed to help soldiers for the rest of their lives, whether it be cooking, finance or relationship classes. The plan has always been to offer these classes to make sure soldiers are set up for success.” While it’s based at Fort Carson, BOSS is open to service members of all branches and has few restrictions on who can take part in activities. Why Does My Child Keep Getting Cavities?

All children can be at risk for cavities and many things can contribute to them. According to the CDC, tooth decay (also known as dental caries) is one of the most common chronic childhood diseases. It is important for children to receive regular dental care (6-month checkups/examinations) so that a dentist can provide child preventive care, evaluate caries risk, and examine teeth and the rest of your child’s mouth. If your child has a cavity, you are not alone. By the age of 4, more than 1 in every 4 children has at least one cavity.

Cavities are caused by bacteria (sugar bugs). The group of germs (bacteria) that play a major role in the development of tooth decay are called mutans streptococcus. These bacteria feed on sugar in the mouth and then produce acid that in time, will begin dissolving the outer most layer of the tooth, known as enamel. If the bacteria stay in your child’s mouth, they can reach the inner layer of the tooth known as the dentin. If allowed to continue to progress, the nerve and blood vessels of the tooth can become affected. At this point, your child may be in pain or even get an infection that requires antibiotics.

Good news is cavities can be treated and even prevented! It is best to start seeking dental care for your child when they are young (first visit is recommended at age 1 or when the first tooth pops up). Starting early allows the dentist to begin preventing cavities by using fluoride treatments and offering nutritional suggestions. As your child gets permanent molars, your dentist can apply sealants (super shields) to protect those teeth from getting cavities. It is important to have best preventive practices in place

very important to schedule your child’s first dental visit by their first birthday – to discuss prevention practices, dietary practices, and other recommendations to help ensure your child has protective measures in place to help prevent tooth decay from developing. According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, 42% of children who are ages 2 to 11 develop a cavity in their baby (primary) teeth. at an early age. It is also important to have regular dental examinations with a dentist to examine for any signs of decay that might be present and to address accordingly. Regarding tooth decay, the first sign that minerals are being lost, a process known as ‘demineralization’, is the development of white/chalky spots on the teeth. In time, as these areas breakdown, a cavity may form. These same bacteria are also responsible for contributing to dental plaque—a soft, sticky, yellowish film that builds up on teeth and can further cause tooth decay and/or lead to gum disease (gingivitis, periodontitis, and other infections, health concerns) if not removed regularly. Unfortunately, tooth decay is rather common in children – it is preventable with excellent oral hygiene and dietary practices; however, dental caries remains one of the most common diseases that affects children of all ages. By the age of 4, more than 1 in every 4 children has at least one cavity. Some children do get cavities much earlier, so it’s

How can I help prevent dental decay/cavities in my child’s teeth at home? There are certain measures you can take to help prevent or reduce the incidence or development of dental caries. 1. Regular brushing and flossing. Brushing in the morning and before bed removes plaque – which can serve as the reservoir for bacteria and sugar. Flossing does the same and gets in between teeth – areas where toothbrush bristles are not able to reach. 2. Begin oral/tooth cleanings when teeth erupt. 3. Non-fluoride toothpaste is available for children under 2 years of age. 4. For high caries-risk patients a smear of fluoride toothpaste can be used for children under 2 years of age (ask your dentist if this is the appropriate course of action for your baby). 5. We recommend that a parent/caregiver brush a child’s teeth until the child is approximately 6 years of age and can demonstrate thorough brushing. 6. Brush twice per day. 7. Bedtime is the most critical time to brush! Fluoride toothpaste helps to restore minerals that were lost due to acid-producing bacteria.
