Many are less prepared for the transition than they’d like to be, and civilian life can present some considerable challenges for those accustomed to a military lifestyle. A BETTER BRAND OF EDUCATION

Finding the right high school in the Pikes Peak region can be overwhelming with all the choices available. A student’s high school years are typically when choosing a career path, trade, or college will be brought into focus. Families search for schools that provide a safe and supportive campus life, quality faculty, challenging academics, and diverse arts & athletics. Fountain Valley School (FVS) was founded in 1930 in Colorado Springs, CO with the belief that a boarding school dedicated to traditional standards of excellence, character, and progressive ideals would thrive in the sublime setting of the American West—and so it has. Simultaneously, our surrounding cityscape has evolved into a bustling mountain community filled with those who choose this incredible location for its quality of life and access to incomparable recreational opportunities. Amid the abundance of educational choices in the region, families often ponder the modern-day benefit of an independent or boarding school option. There are many assumptions from Hollywood portrayals of what a boarding school experience is like. While dining in the great hall of Hogwarts may have its appeal, the reality of being away from home during a critical development period can spark many questions from students and their parents. At FVS, we instill into our students five core values: Courage, Compassion, Curiosity, OpenMindedness, and Self-Reliance. As our world becomes increasingly globally-focused, there are many advantages to developing strong independence while attending a school dedicated to providing a globallyfocused, supportive community. Fountain Valley

School’s student body, averaging around 250, is buzzing with academics, arts, athletics, and weekend activities occurring seven days a week. In fact, non-boarding, day students are encouraged to remain on campus outside of class time in order to engage with our student body — which represents 24 countries and 26 states. An FVS parent recently stated, “My daughters were blown away by the experience of discussing the Cold War in a history class along with students from such countries as China, Vietnam, and Russia.” Southern Colorado’s military community has many unique needs amongst an ever-changing landscape. While the FVS admission office offers financial aid and scholarship opportunities too all prospective students, tuition assistance for military families, such as the Orion Scholarship, is also offered. As military families are often affected by frequent relocating, the option to seamlessly transition from day student to boarding during a deployment can stabilize a student’s high school experience.

Fountain Valley School is located a few miles Southeast from downtown Colorado Springs. The school was founded over 92 years ago when it was rural, ranch land for raising cattle and polo horses. The main 1100-acre campus at the foothills of Pikes Peak continues to thrive on the protected prairie land. And the 40-acre mountain campus located outside Buena Vista, CO provides additional field opportunities for immersive, experiential and western learning. The School’s distinguished Equestrian program

continues to thrive on the ranch property, housing 55 school-owned horses and space for your child to board their own horse. Both English and Western riding is offered, which is a unique founding program in athletics. Students are offered abundant opportunities to challenge themselves and build character through other sports inspired by our western lifestyle. They’ll partake in riveting activities such as rock climbing, mountain biking, skiing, and outdoor education, as well as traditional sports like soccer, tennis, basketball, track, swimming, and volleyball, and more! Students can further distinguish themselves by earning a Global Scholar Diploma and diving deep into a specific global issue about which they are passionate. Through a rigorous curriculum ripe with experiential learning, include travel and community service, students will gain a rich understanding of a topic of their choice through primary research and deep investigation. Past global scholars have gained the knowledge, skills and ability to grasp the nature of global interdependence and pursue their “forever path” in the international arena. As students set out into the world as proud, distinguished FVS alumni, the friendships made here— both with fellow students and the faculty mentors—will stay with them for the rest of their lives. Learn more about campus life and the boarding and day programs, get admission tips, schedule a tour of campus and help with applying at fvs.edu

Adventure Awaits. Fountain Valley School offers a high school education featuring 245 students from over 24 countries and 26 states. Our broad-based liberal arts approach and dedicated faculty will challenge students through globally-minded inquiry, problem-solving, experiential learning, athletics, and creative expression. FVS is a private, college-preparatory co-ed school serving students in grades 9-12 on an 1100-acre campus in Colorado Springs. This award serves as a wonderful reminder and affirmation of that stellar work.” Institutions earning the Military Friendly® School designation were evaluated using both public data sources and responses from a proprietary survey. More than 1,800 schools participated in the 2022-2023 survey with 665 earning special awards for going above the standard. More information can be found at: militaryfriendly.com

Mt. Carmel

Education Guide

From page 2

Mt. Carmel does. “We have partner organizations that help people understand how they can use their GI Bill most appropriately and then help them determine the type of education they want to pursue, whether it be college or technical school or some type of vocational training,” he said. “Depending on what our client wants to do is where we go. If they tell us they want to go to college, we’ll call our partner and tell them our client needs some assistance getting their GI Bill in order. We connect the dots with our partner and let them do their thing.” Mt. Carmel organizes its support services under three pillars — Transition and Employment; Health and Wellness; and Military, Veteran, and Family Services. Its transition and employment team assists transitioning service members, veterans of all eras, and their family members in gaining meaningful employment. The team collaborates with employers, military installations, and community partners as part of this process. Its health and wellness services include individual, group and couples therapy, no-cost therapeutic retreats and non-traditional therapies, including traumafocused yoga, Post Traumatic Stress-focused art and photo therapy, tai chi and others. Services are confidential and open to veterans of all eras and regardless of their discharge status. “Some support organizations won’t assist some vet-

erans based on their discharge status,” said Lindsey Caroon, Mt. Carmel’s communications manager. “But we believe its important to provide support services to as many veterans as possible.” Meanwhile, its military, veteran and family services team provides assistance to members of the veteran community experiencing crisis. Working with national and community partners, the goal is to help people stabilize their lives, allowing them to access other wellness and career services they may need. While some of the support services offered at Mt. Carmel are provided by the organization’s staff, many education and support services are provided by its more than 30 partners, such as Colorado State University Pueblo and UCCS. Community partners also offer career transition, financial and legal services through Mt. Carmel. Many of the organization’s partners are collocated at Mt. Carmel’s facility, and though they’re in close proximity, the staff at Mt. Carmel don’t expect their clients to navigate all of the services on their own. Support services staff conduct an initial assessment for clients who come into the center with some sort of need, may that be housing or employment or some other sort of crises. Clients are then assisted through the organization’s support system. “Our supportive services staff help people develop an action plan to not only address their immediate need but also figure out ways that they can support themselves better in the future,” Smith said. “That could include meeting with our partners or informing a client about what is available to them based on their

military career.” Caroon explained that supportive services staff build relationships with partners and industry organizations, so that when they make a client referral, they create a smoother transition than if a client walked into the partner organization themselves. “Our team then advocates on our clients’ behalf,” Caroon said. “We’re not just handing them off to our partners.” Roughly, six years into operations, Mt. Carmel leaders are excited about the organization’s progress, especially when it comes to helping veterans obtain meaningful employment. Smith said people who hold certifications, especially in the information technology and cyber career fields, are in high demand by employers these days. So, the education piece, cultivated by Mt. Carmel staff and partners, becomes pivotal for veterans and transitioning service members. “We often hear that veterans are unhappy in their current jobs and their current wage,” Caroon said. “At the same time, we hear others say that their military service didn’t transfer well into the civilian workforce. With the rising cost of living and inflation and how expensive things are now days, it’s gratifying to know that we’re helping place veterans into jobs that average $30 an hour. So, we’re not simply helping place people into jobs where they are just getting by. As members of the local community, our veterans are thriving. They are raising families and earning a very livable wage for our region. We have five military installations in our region and we want veterans to choose to stay.”

Covering the costs of college By Fiona Truant

T

he average total cost of a fouryear bachelor’s degree program in the U.S. in 2022 was $101,948 for someone studying in their state of residence at a public university, according to the Education Data Initiative. A private, nonprofit university would charge an average of $212,868 for a four-year bachelor’s degree. And that’s not cheap. Tuition Assistance helps active duty service members with a lot of higher education, including moreaffordable trade schools and associate degrees, and the GI Bill funds the same for active duty service members, veterans and/or their children. For the 2022

academic year, the Post-9/11 GI Bill does include a books and supplies stipend, but it’s capped at $1,000 per year, and stu-

dents pay $1,291 per year on books and supplies at a public four-year university. There’s still a cost, so it’s worthwhile

to have other sources of funding to pay for school. For practically everyone seeking money for higher education in the US, the first stop is to file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid at studentaid.gov. FAFSA is a program by the Department of Education that helps allocate federal student loans, grants and work-study funds. FAFSA allows the government to determine whether or not a student qualifies for certain loans, including some which are partially subsidized by the government. Some scholarship providers, especially universities, require applicants to have filled out a FAFSA as a qualification for a scholarship or grant. Based on financial need, some students

Education Guide qualify for a Pell Grant, which does not need to be repaid. “According to estimates from sources like Edvisors.com and NerdWallet.com, over 1 million students who would have been eligible for a Pell Grant never filled out the FAFSA,” said Karen Wallace, a certified financial advisor who writes for investment website Morningstar. According to Gen and Kelly Tanabe, whose shared claim to fame is winning over $100,000 in scholarships to pay for them both to attend Harvard University, produce an annual scholarship directory and various books on financial aid. According to them, once a student’s FAFSA is filled out and submitted, the best place to start looking is close to home. “Since these awards are usually only available to students in your community, the competition is a lot less fierce,” they said in the 2019 edition of The Ultimate Scholarship Book. “The Coca-Cola scholarship competition, for example, receives more than 100,000 applications each year.” Community organizations or businesses like Lions Clubs, Veterans of Foreign Wars, local performing arts centers and their ilk, on the other hand, are good places to start looking. A college’s financial aid department will likely know of some opportunities, and for service members’ kids, high school counselors and websites can be a great directory. Libraries also have resources for those seeking funding. Books like those by the Tanabes can be great resources, as can the guidance of librarians and other staff. Local governments also have financial scholarships, such as the Colorado Department of Higher Education’s College Invest (collegeinvest.org) program. Similarly, the College Grants Database (collegegrant.net) has a list of state-level higher education grants by state, as well as an array of militaryrelated scholarships and grants divided by branch. U.S. Veterans Magazine (usveteransmagazine.com), too, hosts a list of financial aid opportunities for military-affiliated students. For a general scholarship and financial aid search engine, try Fastweb (fastweb.com). Regardless of where the money’s coming from, it’s important to be mindful that whoever is offering a scholarship probably isn’t doing so out of the goodness of their hearts. Understanding the purpose of a scholarship makes it easier to pick which scholarships to apply to first and gives the applicant a higher chance of being chosen. “We actually have a name for the methodology used by students that apply to anything and everything they find,” said the Tanabes. “It’s called the ‘shotgun’ approach and it never works. Just because you find an award for which you qualify does not mean that you should immediately apply. You want to focus your energies and limited time only on those awards that you have the best chance of winning.”

GOAL High School: Re-engaging High School Students PAID ADVERTISEMENT

Social Anxiety. Homelessness. Teen parenthood. Bullying. Boredom. Loss of a Loved One. These are just a few of the many reasons students sometimes find it difficult to attend and graduate from a traditional brick-and-mortar high school; but, that doesn’t mean a high school degree is impossible. GOAL High School, founded in 1997, serves thousands of students all over the state and has become Colorado’s premier blended online school — meaning it offers one hundred percent of its curriculum online, but also offers in-person instruction at its 37 student drop-in centers. Clearly, the model works as GOAL has graduated close to 1,000 students for each of the last three years and anticipates a student body of 5,500 in the upcoming school year! Relaxed. Comfortable. Welcoming. Safe. Personalized. These are just a few words used to describe the student drop-in centers that set GOAL apart from other public schools. Students can come in daily from 8 to 5 Monday through Friday or they can work entirely from home if that is their preference. GOAL is a Colorado Department of Education PERFORMANCE rated high school, was recently selected as one of the top 50 Alternative Education Campuses in the nation and is the only A.E.C. designated as a Microsoft Showcase School in the world GOAL’s partnership with Microsoft and Lenovo allows students the use of free cutting edge computers and internet service, along with top notch staff training in top online teaching and communication platforms. Jaime Porterfield of Pueblo knows all too well how life’s curve balls can throw a student off course. Her

home life was unstable and she dropped out of high school her junior year while working 12- and 16-hour shifts at a call center to save enough money for her own apartment. Going to school and working long hours at the same time just didn’t work. To make matters even more difficult, she was without shelter for about two weeks, sometimes sleeping in strangers’ backyards and afraid she would be discovered by the homeowners. Determined to get her diploma and get her life back on track, Jaime found GOAL. “GOAL High School saved my life,” she said. She was provided with resources needed to thrive both as a student and in her day-to-day life. Today she’s come full circle after spending time serving her community in law enforcement. She is now an academic coach at GOAL where she’s in daily contact with students, many going through what she has experienced. She offers tutoring and checks in with the parents or guardians daily. Equally important, she helps connect students with social-emotional workers and counselors, who can then bridge the gap to community services, helping to ensure that no student is every hungry, homeless, or alone. GOAL’s well-rounded education doesn’t stop there. Students are able to play sports and participate in other activities at their local high schools. They can enjoy a very enriching musical education through GOAL’s partnership with Perfect World Music Academy or take lifechanging field trips across the country through the GOAL Ventures experiential learning program. Thanks to agreements with community colleges and universities across the state, students can begin taking concurrent

enrollment college classes; several graduates each year even obtain an Associate’s Degree, paid for entirely by GOAL. Regardless of the reason that a traditional setting isn’t working out, GOAL High School specializes in helping students to cross the line of high school success with a fully accredited diploma. For students who are heavily over-aged and under-credited, the school offers a senior recovery option along with various career and technical education pathways to graduation. Work based learning and internships are offered as well with adult mentors to facilitate the process and further ensuring post-high school readiness and success. GOAL boasts a high qualified staff of over 500 statewide and is expanding with new teachers and other positions. Many of the student graduation speeches echoed the fact that the staff cares deeply for their cause. Ms. Kimberly Brown, Assistant Principal for the Fountain, Falcon, and Colorado Springs South sites sums it up very well that “building relationships with students is the key. The bottom line is that students need to know that you care.” Ms. Brown’s colleague, Val Lotz, Dean for the Citadel Mall site, couldn’t agree more claiming that “once a student knows that you have their back, they will do anything for you – even their school work.” Anyone interested in learning more about GOAL High School and/or to enroll for the upcoming school year can visit GOAL High School’s website at goalac. org or by calling 1.877.776.4624.

For some, service doesn’t end with separation

By Jeanne Davant

M

ilitary veterans often look for ways to continue to serve after they retire from active duty. Some offer direct services to and hiring of their fellow veterans; others pay tribute to service people through branding. Matt Greene started thinking about his post-service career long before he retired from the United States Air Force in 2016. The seed for his business, MAVericks Construction, was planted during a conversation eight years earlier, when members of his team expressed concerns about what they’d do when they left the service. Now Greene heads a team of veterans who perform high-quality home and commercial facility maintenance and repairs. When Phill Bragg retired from the Marine Corps six years ago, he partnered with three others who had military connections to found 1350 Distilling. Each of the company’s products honors a branch of the service, as well as first responders. Jennifer Wolf never served in the military herself, but she married a Fort Carson soldier. In 2013, her husband died as a result of his third tour in Iraq. She now helps veterans with PTSD and

family members who have lost someone in the service through an equineassisted therapy program, Destinacion’s Therapy.

PUTTING VETS TO WORK

Greene envisioned MAVericks Construction as a bridge from service into the construction industry. “I’m really trying to solve two problems in my very small way — the number of veterans that are not making healthy transitions out of the uniform into the private sector, and the severe shortage of skilled labor in the construction industry,” he said. Greene was a Marine deployed to Iraq with the Army in 2016. He worked with a team of Guardsmen and Reservists. “We were sitting around before we went out on a mission,” he recalls, “and a lot of these guys and gals were talking about what they were going to do when they took off the uniform. Most of them had a lot of anxiety about that. Their skill set had to do with being a soldier, but how were they going to earn the same level of respect and make an honest living?” As a career civil engineer involved with construction and maintenance, Greene realized they could bring the skills from their military experience

Come start YOUR dental career with us! About 5 years ago, we saw a need in our community for better trained dental assistants. It seemed as though the local dental assistant schools just weren’t focusing on the vitally important issues, and in many cases, were designing their curriculums to keep the dental assistant students in the schools for much longer periods of time, than they really needed to be, in order to justify a higher tuition cost to the students.

At the American Institute of Dental Assisting, all students will assist a licensed dentist, while performing dental procedures on actual live patients, not on plastic dummies!

“We bring them in and assess them, find out what they think they’re good at and what they want to do, and then

Our curriculum teaches the dental assistant students exactly what they need to know, to be a great dental assistant, and leaves out the other subject matter that really has nothing to do with dental assisting.

Other dental assisting schools are severely lacking in any hands-on training. Students in our school learn by doing. After the initial instruction on dental instruments and materials, our students actually sit and assist a licensed dentist while performing dental procedures on a real live patient. With our approach of teaching only the essentials of dental assisting, we are able to have a curriculum that is only 13 weeks long, and graduate dental assistants that are very confident in their skills and are prepared to begin their new career in dental assisting. We also offer an advanced dental assisting program for those dental assistants who want to expand on their dental assisting skills, so they can increase their assisting capabilities and also their earning capacity.

It is very gratifying to see students come to our dental assisting program and in only a 13-week period, learn the skills to enter into the dental profession and have the education necessary to literally change their lives.

he University of Colorado Colorado Springs (UCCS) was recently awarded its seventh consecutive Gold distinction in the annual Military Friendly schools rankings. This year, the university was also recognized as a Military Spouse Friendly institution. “These rankings demonstrate our commitment to serving our military service members, and their families, as they are an integral part of our Southern Colorado family,” said Myrna Martin, Director of Veteran and Military Affairs at UCCS. “These designations, along with our ‘Best for Vets’ ranking, highlight that our commitment to supporting our military members, and that this dedication continues after their service commitment is finished.” While that national recognition is appreciated, Martin acknowledged, it’s building up the local UCCS community that’s most important. One in every five students at UCCS is military-affiliated, and the university is proud to support them. The McCord-Herbst Student Veteran Center is dedicated to helping all military affiliated-students, from those on active duty to military spouses and dependents to veterans. All staff at the center are military affiliated in some way – most are veterans who know firsthand how it feels to enter the world of higher education, both while on active duty and after leaving active service. The mission of the Student Veteran Center is to help military-affiliated students understand the benefits that are available and help them navigate through the journey to their degree – all the way through to graduation. “I’ve been at UCCS for two years, and the knowledge I’ve gained from the Student Center has

been invaluable,” said Eric Wildenstein, an Army veteran and graduate student who is earning an MA in school counseling. “They’ve helped me navigate the process of starting my master’s degree. I want to become a Veteran Readiness and Employment counselor, and the center is helping me achieve that.” Outside of assisting students with information on their educational benefits and the application process, the Student Veteran Center also offers a variety of programs to support students in reaching their academic and career goals, including The Exchange, a free textbook loan program; TARGET: Success, a program designed to build resiliency; and Boots to Suits, a mentorship partnership aimed at assisting students with integrating into the civilian workforce. “Our goal is that the McCord-Herbst Student Veteran Center is a place where our militaryaffiliated and veteran students can connect socially and professionally with others and create a supportive and inclusive environment,” Assistant Director Crista Hill said, noting that the center offers coffee, tea and snacks for students to enjoy, as well as study spaces, computers and areas for meetings and tutoring sessions. “Knowing that we belong, that we are welcome, and that we are supported by a team fosters our ability to succeed,” said Martin. “For those who serve, the military becomes our community, our family. We know where we belong and who we can count on. When we move out into the civilian world to pursue higher education, we encounter a system that appears very different than the one we are used to navigating.” That’s why it’s important for veterans and other

military-affiliated students to carefully consider which institution they choose when pursuing a college degree - and why they should consider UCCS. “Being part of the environment at the Student Veteran Center has helped me overcome the struggles of integrating myself back into a society away from the service,” Wildenstein said. “It bridges the gap and has helped me transition back into the civilian sector, and my confidence has grown.” UCCS offers 56 baccalaureate degrees, 34 certificate programs, 23 master’s degrees, and eight doctoral programs. It’s a fully accredited university with an R2 research designation - a testimony to the quality of research that’s conducted there and to the credentials of the faculty. UCCS also has small class sizes, which allow our faculty to interact closely with their students: the overall ratio of students to faculty is 16:1. “We can help you attain your educational goals – whether it’s earning a certificate, your first degree, or moving into graduate study in order to further your military career or improve your civilian employment options,” Martin said. “Without the Veteran Center, my whole academic life would be much harder,” said Navy veteran Cory Parraz, an undergraduate mechanical engineering student who participates in a work-study role at the center. “The center has made sure I was able to maximize my benefits and take advantage of all the resources that are available. There’s a comradery, even though we’re all different branches. Everyone is very supportive.” Interested in learning more? Visit military.uccs.edu to get started.

What makes higher education so important to military service members?

Scott Russo, CCU Online Student, Military Member

Two of the most common questions asked while serving in the military are, “what are you going to do when you get out?” and “what do you want to be when you grow up?” For some, these questions come sooner than later. Whether you do one term in the military or complete a full career, the next step is always on your mind.

Employment after the Military

For most service members, when they leave the military, they will enter the civilian workforce. Most service members leave military service with valuable skills in leadership, management, and even technical trade. But, in many circumstances, while the service member was off serving their country, their civilian counterparts were going to school or gaining valuable experience in their particular fields of work and study. So, how do veterans make themselves more competitive in the workforce? Simple, higher education!

Why Education?

Many employers are not necessarily looking for degrees from specific schools. They want to find candidates who have completed various levels of higher education. These degrees show valuable critical thinking skills. The combination allows employers to recognize if a particular candidate has equivalent expertise compared to other candidates when coupled with your military experience. Your degree can help set you apart from the rest of the hiring pool.

When to Start

The simple answer is NOW. Each branch of the military has a voluntary education program. This program provides tuition assistance funds to help service members complete their higher education degrees. You can use these funds to pay up to 100% of your tuition costs for classes. Each branch of the military has different requirements and administers the program in its own way, but the bottom line here is that there are funds available to complete your degree. In many cases, you can get multiple degrees. For example, in the Air Force and the Army, you can use tuition assistance to complete an Associate, Bachelor’s, and Master’s degree.

What to Look for

When searching for universities, it is important to know which schools qualify for the use of your tuition assistance funds. First, the university must be either regionally or nationally accredited. Universities with these credentials have undergone a rigorous certification process to ensure that they meet only the highest academic standards and policies. Next, look for a university that offers flexible classes and takes your military time commitments, your family, and your personal life into consideration. Investigate if the university provides a discounted tuition rate to maximize your tuition assistance funds. Ensure the university will transfer your military experience. For the Air Force, this

experience is annotated on your Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) Transcript. For all the other branches, it is located on your Joint Services Transcript (JST). Look for any special agreements the university has with your branch of service. This next one may be a given, but find out if the university accepts tuition assistance funds. To receive these funds, the university must have signed the Department of Defense (DoD) Voluntary Education Partnership Memorandum of Understanding and meet specific guidelines set forth by the DoD. Another item to consider is whether or not the university has staff solely dedicated to helping out the military community. Last and most importantly, see if the university offers the degree program you are looking to pursue.

Is it too late?

It is never too late to start your higher education journey. If you are still on active duty, visit your education office. They can assist you in the first steps of planning your education. Your branch of service has allotted funds for your education. Use them!

What if I am no longer serving?

No problem here. Have you used your Veteran’s Affairs (VA) benefits? Do you know what benefits you qualify for? The best way to find out is to contact the VA to understand what you are eligible for and how to request those benefits. Once you find out which benefits you have, it is time for you to start looking for the university that fits you the best. Just like current service members, make sure the university has the degree you are looking for. It is beneficial to enroll at a university with a dedicated staff to help you through the entire admissions process and guide you through degree completion. Look for universities that are part of the Yellow Ribbon program. The VA has several tools available on its website to help you identify a university that will meet your needs.

How about my family?

For family members of our current service members, look for universities that offer special discount rates for spouses and dependents. With the passage of the Post 9/11 GI Bill, Veterans and active duty service members have the opportunity to pass this benefit on to their spouses or children. Additionally, there are several other avenues through the VA where family members can access funds for education. There are specific guidelines to follow. Visit your education office or the VA, and they will be able to assist you.

HORSES FOR HEALING

After the death of her soldier husband, Wolf was left with her teenage son and a life that had been turned upside down. Wolf, who had been around horses all her life, knew that the animals brought her a semblance of quiet and calm. “Horses have an intuitive nature and reflect what we’re putting out back to us,” she said. “It causes us to look at our behaviors and say, ‘How can I change this?’” Wolf decided to go back to school and get a master’s degree in psychology, with a focus on military psychology. “My focus was understanding the traumas that are experienced by our soldiers during and after service, and their families, because they’re gone so often — not to mention what happens if we lose one of those soldiers to war, suicide or PTSD,” she said. Certified in equine therapy by the Equine Assisted Growth and Learning Association, she founded Destinacion’s Therapy and Maybell’s Mission in 2019 to provide therapy and rescue horses. Therapy plus animal interaction is a powerful combination, Wolf said. Among the 65 rescue animals housed at her facility in Black Forest are wild mustangs that are particularly helpful for military members with PTSD. “These horses are a living, breathing example of resilience,” Wolf said. “Working with them, [clients] feel a sense of empowerment, that they are fully capable of overcoming the traumas that they have felt and finding the answers within themselves. “Each horse here is good at a certain type of thing that they’re working through, whether it’s grief or anxiety or suicidal ideation,” she said. One of her first clients was a military widow. “She was lonely, but she was angry and didn’t want anyone near her,” Wolf said. “She wanted people to come visit her, but she wanted to be left alone. … She wasn’t sure if she wanted to continue living.” At Destinacion’s Therapy, the woman built a relationship with a horse that had a habit of walking away from the herd and standing in her stall, looking forlorn. Through that relationship, the client realized she was isolating herself. “She said, ‘I need to learn how to accept help and ask for what I need,’” Wolf said. It was a breakthrough that helped her cope with her grief and begin to function again. Since its opening, Destinacion’s Therapy has served an average of about 100 people a month, including one-onone sessions, groups and camps. The majority are military people and their families, who receive services free of charge or at reduced rates. “We are geared toward focusing on the fact that 22 lives [lost] a day is unacceptable,” Wolf said. “Our nation’s heroes deserve to never have to worry about anything for the rest of their lives.
