The Active Adult Center staff are excited to welcome you to our Center inside the Nittany Mall! With a wide variety of activities for active adults, ages 55+, it is the perfect place for your recreational, educational, and social needs! A print and online calendar of events are available to keep participants informed of exciting Center happenings! Stop by, say hello, and check out our latest opportunities!

The Center has re-opened with a regular schedule of M-F, 9 AM-3 PM daily, and Centre County Van Transportation to the Center remains available.

Active Adult Center Special Events

Murder Mystery Luncheon with RPTM

Match your wits with the clues and the suspects as you try to solve the mystery! The Centre Region Active Adult Center has once again partnered with the Penn State University Recreation, Park and Tourism Management students to bring you a morning full of suspense! Lunch is included in the festivities. Please note: The deadline to register is October 19.

Rummikub Tournament

Love to Play Rummikub? Then join us at the Active Adult Center for a good, old-fashioned, friendly Rummikub Tournament! It's free to participate! There will be prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. Light refreshments, raffles and 50/50 will also be part of the event. Must pre-register to play! If you have questions, please feel free to contact the Active Adult Center at (814) 231-3076.

Active Adult Center Health, Fitness & Wellness

Healthy Steps

This on-going program is designed to improve balance, flexibility, and strength, reducing the risk of falling. All equipment is provided. This class uses exercise bands, foam balls, and hand weights. Exercises are done in a chair or standing. Free classes are open to ages 55 and over and are held at the Active Adult Center in the Nittany Mall on Monday and Thursday mornings.

Silver Spurs Line Dancing

Line dancing is a fun and interactive exercise class set to music. By participating in this exciting class, you will achieve benefits such as: reduction of stress and depression; increased energy and serotonin; improved flexibility, strength, balance, and endurance; strengthening of bones and improved cardiovascular health; increased mental capacity while exercising cognitive processes; and enhanced dynamic and rapid-fire decision making. No experience needed. Exercise just for the fun of it, and/or participate in community performances of the Silver Spurs.

Tai Chi

Deeply rooted in Chinese meditation, medicine and martial arts, Tai Chi combines mental concentration with slow, controlled movements to focus the mind, and challenge the body. Not sure Tai Chi is right for you? Come join the practice group for a demo session at no charge. This is a "drop-in" Tai Chi Class at $2 per session fee. Initial registration required, then additional session fees can be paid directly to the instructor on the day of each class.

Active Adult Hiking Group

Studies show that spending time in nature boosts energy, improves immune function, concentration and mood, increases vitamin D and reduces stress. Hiking is beneficial to Active Adults and improves heart health, reduces muscle loss, keeps your body flexible and increases balance while preventing falls. In the Centre Region we are fortunate to have so many natural spaces to enjoy, from local park trails and regional biking paths to multiple state forests and state parks just outside of State College. Join the Active Adult Hiking Group for weekly hikes in and around the Center Region to explore the beautiful trails this area has to offer! Get Me Moving!

Join our "Get Me Moving!" Group for some fitness that fits your lifestyle. Banish stiff muscles by stretching and doing core conditioning with us. You'll have lots of fun and meet some great folks while getting fit! Classes are held at the Active Adult Center on Monday and Thursday evenings.

Cooking Class - Big Food Little Money! NEW!

Have a passion for cooking? Looking for some budgetfriendly recipes to make at home? Join us once a month at the Active Adult Center as we take "a bite" into the world of cooking on a budget! Each class we will review and prepare a specific recipe, the budgeted cost, where to buy ingredients, specific utensil's needed and nutritional value! This class is a drop-in class. Fee will be collected at each class to cover ingredients.

Come and join Karen from Schlow Library and discuss the most current books, some climbing the New York Bestseller's List! Open Artist Studio

Art can serve as a way to explore your past and your present experiences. Whether you look at art as therapy or just a way to have fun, art is a powerful tool. ACAP (Adult Children of Aging Parents)

Second Tuesday of Each Month at 5 PM Join ACAP on the second Tuesday of each month at 5 PM for free educational programs. ACAP is an organization that supports adult child caregivers through education, resources, and support. Helping caregivers to better care for themselves and their aging parents. Mid-State Literacy Council - Digital Skills Ready @ 50+ Class

Join us at the Active Adult Center as the Mid-State Literacy Council, a non-for-profit local organization, provides seniors with the opportunity to gain technology skills. Instructors will be sharing their skills to assist in the use technology to communicate and connect with schools, healthcare, and employment. The Mid-State Literacy's dream is that no one lacks literacy, so everyone can access a life of safety, realized goals, and community participation.
