2024 IS SET TO BE THE KINGDOM’S YEAR

EDITOR

So the Expo and FIFA World Cup are coming to Saudi Arabia after all. As 2023 comes to a close its time to put a final note on the Saudi Arabian market – as it is set to dominate news headlines for years to come. As Saudi Arabia undergoes its extraordinary transformation, marked by a construction boom of historic proportions, it’s crucial to evaluate both the remarkable opportunities and the formidable challenges this presents. This boom is more than just an economic phenomenon; it’s a pivotal part of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030, a strategic framework aimed at diversifying the economy beyond oil. The surge in construction projects, ranging from megacities like NEOM to vast entertainment complexes, signifies a bold leap towards modernization and economic expansion. The scope of these projects is not just transforming the physical landscape but is also a catalyst for job creation, technological advancement, and global investment attraction. However, with great ambition comes great responsibility. This construction boom must navigate the tightrope of sustainability and environmental stewardship. The Kingdom’s commitment to eco-friendly practices and reducing carbon footprints in these projects is not just commendable but necessary for long-term success and global environmental responsibility. Furthermore, the construction boom is reshaping Saudi Arabia’s socio-cultural landscape. By creating spaces that promote tourism, entertainment, and cultural exchange, the Kingdom is opening doors

to a world that once seemed closed off. This shift is not only significant for economic growth but also for cultural integration and global perception. Internationally, Saudi Arabia’s construction initiatives position it as a formidable player in the global arena, challenging established norms of urban development and economic growth models. However, this rapid development must be balanced with strategic planning to ensure longevity and stability, avoiding the pitfalls experienced by other rapidly developing economies. Maintaining momentum while ensuring quality, environmental sustainability, and social impact will be the true test of Vision 2030’s success. The construction boom is a monumental undertaking with the potential to redefine an economic and cultural landscape. It is a journey of transformation that requires careful navigation, balancing ambitious development with sustainable practices and fairness to those that will build it. As observers and participants in this journey, we must engage with and understand the implications of this transformative era in Saudi Arabian history.

Volvo Construction Equipment (Volvo CE) has introduced its pioneering electric construction machines to the UAE, marking a major step towards decarbonising construction sites in the region. The launch of these electric machines, including the ECR25 Electric compact excavator, the 23-ton EC230 Electric excavator, and the 20-ton L120 Electric wheel loader, demonstrates Volvo CE’s commitment to sustainable construction practices. These machines offer the same performance as their diesel counterparts but with additional benefits such as near silence, reduced vibrations, and a more comfortable working environment. They are not only environmentally friendly but also comply with stringent emission regulations, opening up new business opportunities. These electric units have already demonstrated their efficiency on various global construction sites. Their introduction in the UAE is

Doosan Bobcat, the global compact equipment, innovation and worksite solutions brand, announced today intentions to expand its footprint with a new manufacturing facility in Monterrey, Mexico, anticipated to begin production in early 2026. The plant will expand Bobcat’s existing global footprint to create additional production capacity and manufacturing capabilities for selected compact track and skid-steer loader models. “As a global company with manufacturing facilities, offices, dealerships and customers across the globe, we have seen tremendous growth and increased demand for our products,” said Scott Park, Doosan Bobcat CEO. “We are excited to continue growing our footprint to meet demand for Bobcat solutions worldwide.” The 65,000-sqm manufacturing facility is expected to increase Bobcat’s North American compact loader production capacity by 20%. The facility will feature areas for welding, painting and assembly, as well as an on-site warehouse and office space. Bobcat will implement state-of-theart technology with an emphasis on quality, precision and energy efficiency. The Monterrey location will manufacture compact loaders for North American distribution. Bobcat has additional locations across its global footprint that also produce compact loaders. “Adding the facility allows NA to meet growing customer demand and enables our European production facilities in Dobříš to focus on products for the EMEA region, meeting growing demand here. Globally, Bobcat will better serve customers by expanding our manufacturing facilities and shortening lead times,” said Gary Hornbacher, Doosan Bobcat President for the EMEA region.

SARENS GIVES VIETNAM CHEMICAL PLANT A HUGE LIFT

S

arens says it used four heavy-duty crawler cranes: the SCC6300, LR1350, SC2800 and AC200, with respective capacities of 630T, 350T, 280T and 200T, as part of a major maintenance programme at the Hyosung’s chemical plant in Phu My, Ba Ria - Vung Tau, Vietnam. Operating continuously for a month and a half, Sarens said the mobilisation posed a huge challenge for the company, as progress had to be fast given its urgency. The construction conditions were extremely strict, characterised by high fire and explosion safety requirements, manoeuvrability in tight spaces and coordination with many different teams. Sarens was selected to collaborate with Dae Ah on the maintenance of Hyosung’s chemical plant in Phu My, Ba Ria Vung Tau, Vietnam. The collaboration posed a huge challenge, as progress had to be fast given the urgency of the project, which added an extra layer of complexity. The team approached the project with meticulous attention to detail, and its engineers had to carry out a thorough analysis of the plans in order to coordinate with the various operations, equipment and safety departments. Sarens’ track record, with more than a decade of experience in the Vietnamese lifting and moving market, served to ensure that each standard lifting plan could meet the

most demanding criteria in terms of personnel and environmental considerations, while maintaining a near 100% success rate on every single operation. Remarkably, the project’s construction conditions were extremely challenging, characterised by high fire and explosion safety requirements, maneuverability in tight spaces and coordination with different teams. Sarens used four heavy-duty crawler cranes: the SCC6300, LR1350, SC2800 and AC200, with respective capacities of 630T, 350T, 280T and 200T, which were deployed at the Phu My site and operated continuously for a month and a half. The skilled operators, experienced in various projects all over the country, demonstrated the required professionalism, from site supervision to crane operation, auxiliary cranes and equipment maintenance. Eventually, despite external factors such as adverse weather conditions, Sarens successfully completed the project on schedule. Truong Nguyen Hoang Tien (Country Manager) explained: “The Vietnamese chemical sector is growing very quickly, and this growth requires the construction of state-of-the-art facilities with advanced technology and efficient designs. Sarens team has been able to optimise the design and construction processes, reducing costs and improving the efficiency of the chemical production facilities.”

INTERVIEW NOVEMBER 2023

“WE WANT TO BE NUMBER #1”

CMME TALKS TO ANAS AL SHAIKH, GENERAL TRADING MANAGER, GARGASH MOTORS & GENERAL TRADING

W

ith more than 14 years of extensive experience while working with leading brands across vital industrial sectors such as infrastructure, road construction, and diesel-powered equipment, Gargash Motors & General Trading’s General Trading Manager Anas Al Shaikh has seen the construction equipment market in the UAE evolve drastically during the past years. But then, so has the company he leads. Driven by what he describes as the country’s strategic mega projects such as the Etihad Railway project, the vast Dubai EXPO site, and many others, Gargash’s accumulation of brands such as Power Sonic, Powerplus, Aebi Schmidt are now marking it out as one of the fastest expanding providers of heavy equipment brands around. “The Gargash product portfolio has increased in the past two years and will continue to expand to cover all the industrial sectors requirements,” he proudly tells CMME. “And our product range is not limited to the construction equipment. We are also investing heavily in sustainable/green equipment to align with the UAE vision,” One of the newest brands in the Gargash ranks is South Korea’s concrete pump specialist KCP. He explains that partnering with KCP enables Gargash to continue to balance its green ambitions with supplying the market with the “ultimate solutions” for their operations. “KCP is one of the leading manufacturers of concrete pumps globally offering a wide range of products that fulfills the readymix industry,” he affirms. “KCP’s unique design structure which combines Mercedes Benz’ chassis, the Rexroth

hydraulic system and Strenx Steel from SSAB has led them to creating very high-end quality products.” According to Al Shaikh, the UAE is one of the most competitive markets in the region, making it a challenging place to introduce new brands, even ones with the predigree and partners of KCP. It’s a challenge, you sense, he relishes: “We are always keen to add new brands, always keen to explore new technologies. Our mission is to be the preferred supplier to our customers,” he says. “The strategy team within Gargash is continuously exploring unique and quality products that are suitable and value-adding to customers.” Well-established on both the UAE’s vehicle and equipment scenes, Gargash maintains an open channel with the private and government sector and a high profile at all the major events and exhibitions hosted around the region. Its suite of digital channels and platforms, meanwhile, ensure it remains one of the best-connected suppliers to its customer base in the region. The net result, Al Shaikh says, is that he and his team have a deep understanding of the needs of equipment users in the market. “They want quality, sustainability, competitiveness, and high efficiency but the most important key for them is aftersales support. That ensures customer satisfaction,” he states firmly. To that end, the partnership with KCP is proving to be an effective demonstration of this approach of: identifying the market’s needs and then introducing the right products at the right time: “At the start, we conducted a thorough market study to position our products. With the excellent support of KCP, we were able to decide jointly on the suitable pricing structure,” he explains. “In addition, being the Mercedes Benz dealer, we were able to evaluate the possibility of local assembly of the concrete pumps to potentially reduce the cost and enhance the lead times.” He also believes that KCP’s successful launch demonstrates that there is still room for innovation in the UAE market: “With the KCP structure being built

13 The Gargash product portfolio has increased in the past two years and will continue to expand to cover all the industrial sectors requirements, says Anas Al Shaikh.

“Our product range is not limited to the construction equipment but also, we are investing heavily in sustainable green equipment to align with the UAE vision”

using STRENX steel, that is lighter and more robust that other types of steel in the market, it reduces the fuel consumption of the truck by around 20%.” While it is still a relatively new name on construction sites, KCP’s is already proving its advantages in the field: “One of our constractor customers has proven KCP pumps have the highest and most efficient flowrate when pumping concrete. They’re working faster and smoother – achieving more with less. You can actually see the productivity of that KCP pump working along-side the other branded pumps at the same project.” Like many others in the distribution channel, Gargash has had to face up to its own challenges such as disruption in the global supply chain and the availability of space on shipping lines to get equipment into the market. Using KCP as an example, he explains how the firm has fought to mitigate these issue and ensure equipment stocks are there for customers when they need them. “We work very closely and side-by-side with KCP to overcome these challenges by keeping adequate number of units available all the time in stock,” he adds, stating that the process is an extension of an ongoing strategy of keeping delivery times to a minimum: “We ensure adequate levels of stock from different models are always available on the ground. We want to guarantee the availability of off-the-shelf products for our customers and work closely with the manufacturing plants on a yearly basis to forecast demand for the products.” Ultimately, Al Shaikh and Gargash understand that it must deliver to customers what they want and when they want it: “There are many strategies to build and sustain the relationships but one of the most important ways that we follow is by fulfilling the need of our customers and ensuring that what was said is done,” he says. “Moreover, our suppliers are supporting with added value packages that keeps the customers satisfied throughout the lifespan of the equipment.” He continues: “What is unique about the UAE market, which makes it challenging, is that customers are always looking for the best products with the lowest prices. It is the financial solutions such as stretched payment plans and added value items like the extended warranty and service packages we can offer that change the dynamic of closing the deal for us.” Fronting the Gargash operation is a sales force dealing with rental, leasing and financing with these teams complemented by a highly skilled set of engineers, who he says are continuously trained and updated on the technology and products they are supporting. He concludes by teasing an ambitious vision for Gargash. “We are aiming to be number one in the market and the preferred supplier by investing in and developing our facilities and establishing branches across several locations withing the country. But we also want to be one the first importers of electric construction equipment that serve the UAE market.”

VERSATILE AND VALUED

CMME LOOKS AT THE NEW CASE V-SERIES BACKHOE LOADER AND TALKS TO THE SAUDI CONTRACTORS THAT HAVE OPTED TO BRING THE VERSATILE MACHINE INTO THEIR FLEETS

C

ASE’s journey in backhoe loader production began in the post-World War II era, a time when there was a massive demand for new construction and agricultural equipment. The company, already established as a maker of steam engines and other construction equipment, saw an opportunity to innovate. In 1957, it introduced the world to the first factory-integrated backhoe loader. At the time, the machine was groundbreaking, combining a front loader and a rear backhoe onto a single unit. This integration dramatically improved efficiency on job sites, as operators could now perform a variety of tasks with a single machine, without the need for multiple pieces of equipment. Through the 70 years that have passed, CASE has continued to refine and enhance its backhoe loaders with the focus not only on power and efficiency but also on operator comfort, precision, and safety. As technology advanced, CASE incorporated new features such as hydraulic systems, improved horsepower, and better control systems, making their backhoe loaders more versatile and user-friendly. CASE Construction Equipment has recently launched its latest V-Series

backhoe loader which continues this legacy with a brand-new cab, which it says, raises operator comfort and ergonomics to a new level, while retaining the excellent performance, reliability and versatility of the range. The new V-Series, which includes models with power ranging from 86 to 110 hp, builds on the rich heritage of industry firsts, well proven technology and productivity-boosting solutions. The restyled cab exterior and redesigned interior provides uncompromising comfort for the operator, and consequently big productivity gains. The front and left console offer superior accessibility into the cab, while the spacious cab offers ample clearance for the operator’s legs when rotating the seat between loader and backhoe operation. The adjustable seat and tiltable steering column option enable the operator to find the perfect working position. EMBRACING THE DIGITAL QUARRY

DIGITALISATION HOLDS ENORMOUS POTENTIAL TO HELP QUARRIES BOOST THEIR COMPETITIVENESS, SAYS ANDREY KOMOV, HEAD OF PRODUCTIVITY FOR REGION INTERNATIONAL AT VOLVO CONSTRUCTION EQUIPMENT

D

igitalisation holds enormous potential to help quarries boost their competitiveness – and a tailored, partnership-led approach is key to unlocking the benefits in a practical and affordable way, says Andrey Komov, Head of Productivity for Region International at Volvo Construction Equipment. In production applications, such as quarries, that involve

repetitive jobs and moving large amounts of materials, failing to adopt a digital transformation strategy can have severe repercussions. Even small efficiency gains per tonne moved can add up to significant savings over time, improving competitiveness and the bottom line, but these opportunities can be difficult to detect with traditional methods. And that’s not the only benefit. Real-time monitoring of machines and operator behaviour enables quarry managers to spot deviations that could lead to downtime and proactively implement

safety measures to prevent accidents. Meanwhile, reduced administration and paperwork empowers workers to focus on more critical tasks, leading to increased productivity, and makes the quarry a more appealing workplace, helping to attract skilled workers in a competitive labour market. Digitalisation is not a cure-all solution, however, rather a tool that must be used in the right way and for the right purposes. Every customer has unique challenges and objectives, and we encourage them not to face them alone. Instead, let’s work together in partnership.

21 Furthermore, by conducting site optimisation work, we can analyse cycle data from a customer’s operations and help them identify improvement potential. In one instance, we noted a long wait time for truck loading and dumping. Further investigation revealed that the wheel loader operator was not working efficiently, causing loading to take an excessive amount of time. By creating a digital twin of the site, we were able to analyse the impact of process changes and concluded that the customer could reduce cost per tonne by 18% with minor changes in their cycle time. Operator training from Volvo was recommended as one of the next steps.

Insight, Analyse, Improve and Sustain We listen to customers carefully and take them through a four-step process – Insight, Analyse, Improve and Sustain – to develop a tailored programme that will help achieve sustainable improvements to their operations. This programme will involve various services according to the specific results customers are looking for, and in cases where we do not have a ready-made solution, we see it as an opportunity to brainstorm and develop a custom approach. ‘Plug and play’ with affordable subscriptions That does not mean it has to be expensive, however. There is a misconception that digitalisation is only affordable for those who can put a six or sevendigit budget behind it, but we are challenging and changing this paradigm. The fact that our solutions are subscription based allows customers to start with any budget without the need for huge upfront investments. Indeed, we would recommend that customers start small and make adjustments on the go, rather than trying to make the perfect plan for digitalisation and never taking action. To make it even easier for quarry operators, we have developed solutions that are brand agnostic. In other words, they allow customers to ‘plug and play’ with any machine, but naturally with wider functionality when integrated into a Volvo machine via our Co-Pilot platform. We are constantly learning with our customers, and our list of solutions will continue to grow over time. Performance Indicator visualises operations on clear dashboards to be forewarned of any production or operational issues and make timely, data-driven decisions. Success stories with digital solutions So far, the positive feedback has been a great source of motivation for us. One customer, who adopted our Performance Indicator and Connected Map technologies, reported saving four hours per week on reduced administration

time. This translates to 208 hours per year or 26 working days of management time. Meanwhile, several customers who have implemented our Connected Map technology have reported increased operator awareness of vehicle traffic flow. Operators can now slow down when they see a line forming to be loaded by an excavator, instead of rushing to the spot and waiting. This, combined with speed zone implementation, has led to a positive effect on fuel consumption. Obviously, the best results can be achieved by sufficient on-site connectivity.

Partnering for a sustainable future Your competitors will inevitably join this transformation sooner or later, if they haven’t already. Starting early may present challenges, but being late could be devastating for your business. We are eager to assist you in this journey as it aligns with our purpose of making this world a better place to live in. By collaborating with our customers, we can increase their efficiency and contribute to society’s sustainable development by reducing the carbon footprint and improving resource utilisation – always with people’s health, safety, and well-being at the forefront of our actions. This is why we drive innovation and work closely with our customers to create a world that is cleaner, safer, and more connected, every day.

“By collaborating with our customers, we can increase their efficiency and contribute to society’s sustainable development”

A HYBRID APPROACH GENERAL MANAGER PETER ELLIS, TALKS DINGLI MIDDLE EAST’S REMARKABLE PROGRESS IN THE AWP SECTOR

I

n 2023, Dingli Middle East has emerged as a leader in the aerial work platform (AWP) sector, showcasing a an evolution in its product offerings. The Chinese manufacturer now boasts a diverse range of over 250 models, integrating common parts across 85% of its equipment, a move that has significantly streamlined maintenance and inventory management for its clients. Dingli’s approach to design and manufacturing, rooted in a modular strategy, has enabled the company to achieve impressive production efficiency. According to Peter Ellis, General Manager of Dingli Middle East, this strategy is a crucial factor behind their ability to produce a scissor lift every six minutes and a boom lift every 30 minutes on automated lines. This efficiency is a boon, especially for rental companies, as it translates to carrying fewer component parts and easier maintenance. 2023 has been a year of significant expansion with substantial growth observed across all of its product ranges. The launch of its state-of-theart telescopic 36m, 41m, and 44m booms was enthusiastically received with buyers attracted to a unique modular design that lets them fold

into a 40ft container and the Dingli-patented Automatic axle extender system which prevents wheel scrubbing during deployment. “Our customers are expecting to receive the first deliveries in December and into 2024,” adds Eliis. “We have worked hard to back up our successful expansion in the sales of equipment with excellent after sales support for our customers. Our goal is to offer the best after sales support in our region. This will be achieved with on-the-ground technical support through employed engineers in key regional areas and in-country spare parts that can be quickly despatched; reducing downtime for our customers.” The company now offers boom lifts ranging from 11m to 44m in both telescopic and articulated models, available with diesel engine, battery, and hybrid power options. “We see a continued desire to reduce the number of diesel powered MEWPS,” adds Ellis, noting that challenges remain, particularly regarding charging facilities and the perception of power compared to diesel options. Dingli consequently views its hybrid option, which uses lithium batteries with a backup generator for charging or as a range extender, as a stepping stone towards fully electric models. Its new Hybrid Modular Range, Extended Series, introduces a ‘mobile charger’

in the form of a small combustion engine, allowing the machine to operate for up to 30 days on a full tank of diesel when charging facilities are unavailable. The ‘mobile charger’ has already been added to its electric boom lifts, enabling operators to get a cleaner way to reach high maximum working heights from 16m to 44m. Capacities are impressive too and operators can expected to carry a maximum load of 454kg – all powered by the 80V (420Ah) lithium battery pack. “We feel the hybrid option is the perfect choice,” explains Ellis, adding that it uses lithium batteries for power with a back up generator acting as a power source for charging or as a range extender. While Dingli’s comprehensive range – extending from 6m to 32m in the scissor range and 11m to 44m in its articulated and telescopic boom lift range – is complemented by various power sources across the whole range, Ellis also highlights that Dingli’s products are competitively priced with support extending far beyond the purchase. “We offer a premium product, competitively priced with great availability, backed up with excellent local after sales support,” explains Ellis. “Dingli will continue to innovate in 2024 with the introduction of rough terrain scissor lifts with our Hybrid power option which will be available in Q1 of 2024.”
