DON’T LET THE COP 28 GO TO WASTE

STEPHEN WHITE

To paraphrase a John Lennon festive number, so this is 2024, a year has ended and a new one has begun. Are you feeling older or maybe like my waistline you are feeling a little larger. In the aftermath of COP 28 are you also feeling a little greener? I suspect you are probably not. While the event had some significant announcements including relatively unheralded but nonetheless important – and construction-related – agreements on the built environment, net zero emissions and resilient buildings, there remains a nagging thought that we haven’t fully addressed the elephant in the meeting room. Largely that the globe is building new infrastructure at all time pace. As Amanda Williams, CIOB’s head of environmental sustainability notes: According to the UK Green Building Council, hard infrastructure is the second largest driver of man-made pressure on biodiversity. The climate crisis and the nature crisis are deeply interconnected, and if we don’t seek to solve them together, we risk solving neither. She argues that the built environment industry must carefully consider its role in protecting and restoring nature. But without government incentives or international agreements to sweeten the deal for developers and contractors, let alone sub-contractors, it is hard to see where the real impetus or financial structures are going to be in place to ensure that the people that buy and use equipment – and have the know how to use the machinery most efficiently – are placed.

BRIAN FERNANDES

Obviously, the issue of climate change is a moral and ethical challenge as well as being a political and technological bar, rier to negotiate. But realistically, if you spend your children’s inheritance on going green, then you will – in many construction markets where sustainability is not properly funded – be not be going at all for very long. Then there is the issue of availability of the equipment in the first place. Saudi Arabia has made a lot of noise about improving its green credentials, but insisting on greener equipment and vehicles has forced some construction to stop or, worse, abandon the green ambitions of some major projects. Clearly some new thinking is required if contracting and sub-contracting is to help lower emissions on projects. Fortunately, we are at least seeing new greener products and power filter into the market. At COP 28, FAMCO demonstrated Volvo’s electric excavator and there are a raft of new off-the-grid power solutions emerging. The technology is here, the willingness is there, but can we now have some funding to go with it all please. That may be the most important New Year’s resolution of all.

Manitowoc announced the appointment of E-Buildway as its official dealer in Georgia. The appointment represents a significant milestone in the construction equipment industry of the region and solidifies a burgeoning relationship between Manitowoc and E-Buildway, said the leading crane manufacturer. E-Buildway, a well-established name in Georgia’s construction equipment market, has been instrumental in promoting the Potain brand in the region. The company has successfully sold eight used Potain MC 120 cranes within Georgia, catering to prominent contractors such as New Group, Tbilisi House, and Green House. This achievement underscores the growing preference for Potain cranes in the Georgian construction sector. Nino Giorgadze, co-founder of E-Buildway, emphasized the importance of matching the right crane to the specific needs of a project. “Our engineers work closely with customers to identify the most suitable crane for their projects. Potain is a brand synonymous with quality and reliability, which is why it’s increasingly becoming the preferred choice for contractors, even over new cranes from other suppliers,” Giorgadze said. The decision to appoint E-Buildway as a Potain dealer is a testament to the performance of used Potain cranes and their growing popularity in the region. It reflects a strategic move by Manitowoc to strengthen its foothold in Central Asia, a region with burgeoning construction activities and a rising demand for reliable and efficient construction equipment.

The go-ahead for the 2024 budget came at the council’s meeting, which was being chaired by Sheikh Khaled. During the meeting, he gave directives to focus efforts on

conserving Emirati heritage and upholding national identity by increasing awareness of national traditions, and by empowering local talent within the sector to help embed UAE cultural heritage among young people. Sheikh Khaled emphasised that the leadership is continuing to prioritise and activate projects that drive infrastructural development to foster a sustainable community environment and ensure the stability and cohesion of Emirati society. The Crown Prince explained, “Preserving national heritage and fostering Emirati traditions springs from a deep-rooted belief that heritage is essential for building both the present and the future.” He added that these measures aim to build a future in which the nation’s cultural heritage is a source of pride and inspiration for all. Later in the agenda, Sheikh Khaled was briefed on plans to establish the Abu Dhabi Hazardous Materials Management Centre, which aims to develop a framework for effectively handling hazardous materials. The centre also aims to ensure co-ordination among the relevant authorities to further enhance planning and response efforts to manage hazardous materials in line with best international practices.

FILI PARTNER TAPS INTO POTAIN’S USED SELECTION

Filli Partner has purchased a used Potain MD 305 B for work on its City Plaza development in Moldova, a residential project under construction in central Ungheni. Building work is set to last two years, with the project’s opening scheduled for the first quarter of 2025. The crane has a maximum capacity of 12t, with up to 70m of jib available, and the ability to lift 3.2t at its jib. On the City Plaza job, the crane is working with its full 70 m jib, allowing it to cover the entire jobsite. The crane was purchased through Manitowoc’s regional Used Cranes sales team. “We’re extremely impressed by the efficiency and capabilities of the Potain MD 305 B and are confident with our choice. Selecting this model eliminated the need for two cranes, delivering significant efficiency to our project. The Potain Used Cranes sales team was easy to do business with and we’d certainly look at future collaborations,” said Lurie Gisca, founder and administrator of Filli Partner.

HDHI expands Develon brand loyalty programme HD Hyundai Infracore has expanded the company’s ‘DEVELONCARE’ global customer visit management programme to build on the growing affinity for the company’s market-leading DEVELON brand. HD Hyundai Infracore’s DEVELONCARE customer visit service involves equipment experts from the company travelling to see customers in person to diagnose their equipment and to assist them in maintaining it in optimal condition. HD Hyundai Infracore actively promoted DEVELONCARE activities in Korea and several other countries, including an inspection tour of China, from February to May 2023. This was to immediately respond to customer requests following the launch of new

machinery models earlier this year and to support the introduction of the new DEVELON brand. As of September, the global DEVELONCARE team had visited

major work sites in 21 countries, including Vietnam and South Africa. The company plans to expand services in Brazil and Indonesia in the fourth quarter to provide

an increased focus on customer support by the end of the year. HD Hyundai Infracore also intends to enhance support for the DEVELON brand by focusing on managing specific customer groups, such as ‘those using the company’s construction equipment for over 10,000 hours’ and ‘equipment customers in Neom City in Saudi Arabia’. Under the DEVELONCARE programme, when a problem is discovered, HD Hyundai Infracore forms a team bringing in other experts in the field, including research and development and quality, to provide comprehensive solutions and focus on providing premium services that prioritise customer satisfaction.

LR273 LUFFING JIB CLIMBS TORONTO

C

anadian builder Avenue Building Corporation has deployed one Raimondi LR273 luffing crane for a downtown Toronto jobsite. The project, a new residential high rise, is located in the city’s sophisticated Bloor Yorkville area. “The Raimondi LR273 is one of the best-selling models for this type of development in Canada, especially in major metropolises like Toronto. High-rise buildings are in increasing demand and swing rights are an issue; making this crane an apt onsite asset,” highlighted Jim Patullo, President, Avenue Building Corporation. “The features of this versatile machine, including the out of

service radius and the ease of its internal climbing, allow us to install the luffer on several ‘zero lot line’ projects,” Patullo added. He noted that the same luffing model was employed for the construction of the first Nobu Residences and Hotel in downtown Toronto, which had similar construction requirements. Located in a congested area, 55 Charles Condo is surrounded by several other high-rise developments. Installed in February 2021, the 18tn maximum lifting capacity crane is at work with a 40 meter jib, clocking in at 15m out of service radius with a tip load of 8.20t in UltraLift. Erected on a 6 GR6L tower sections on a concrete pad in the below ground parking at level 4, the

36m tower height has been climbed off internally for the past two years until reaching the final height of 167m above the ground level. Sitting now on the roof, the LR273 is approaching the final stages of the project, with the expected dismantling date scheduled for December 2023. “Another asset of this luffer is the ability to promptly switch from two falls to four falls and reverse, allowing to lift large generators, air handling units, BMUs, and more without any downtime. This ensures that the developer gets its necessary equipment in place cost-effectively and quickly. Further, equipped with an 86kW hoisting gear, the LR273 can lift at a maximum speed of 204 meters per minute and have a

drum capacity of 980m, boasting excellent lifting performances and meeting site deadlines,” he explained, noting that the weightoptimized luffer is also very easy to assemble and boasts excellent load curve. “Our fleet currently counts seven Raimondi cranes, all deployed across different sites in Toronto, and we are pleased to anticipate that two additional LR273 luffing jib cranes will shortly go up in another key development of the city,” concluded Patullo. Upon completion, 55 Charles Residences, a project of MOD Developments, will add 665 residential units to the neighbourhood, contributing to the dynamic and ever-evolving landscape of central Toronto.

FEATURE DECEMBER 2023

The recent forging of a partnership between Develon and German Gulf Enterprises should be able to leverage the strengths of both companies.

CMME MEETS GERMAN GULF ENTERPRISES AS IT PREPARES TO LAUNCH DEVELON’S GAME CHANGING DX400LC-7M INTO THE UAE

2

024 will see German Gulf Enterprises (GGE) celebrate a major milestone as it celebrates its fiftieth year as a key player in the UAE’s construction equipment industry. Since 1974, the wellregarded Bukhatir Group-owned business has been a reliable partner to contractors and companies across various sectors, including construction, oil and gas, aviation, ship building, marine engineering, and hospitality industries; providing them with the technical solutions and services to power their businesses. In fact, GGE’s extensive experience and deep-rooted presence in the region make it a valuable partner for any global entity looking to expand its operations in the UAE. In Develon (formerly Doosan), it may have found the perfect match. The construction equipment market in the Middle East and Africa has been experiencing substantial growth, with companies like Develon contributing significantly to this trend. A subsidiary of HD Hyundai Infracore, it has reported continuing increases in revenue and sales volume in the MEA region – a market which is projected to continue growing, potentially reaching a value of $6.4 billion by 2028 – driven by its focus on introducing advanced technology and customised services. Given these dynamics, the recent forging of a partnership between Develon and GGE should be able to leverage the strengths

of both companies. For four years now, Develon’s innovative technology and evolving product lineup has combined with GGE’s regional expertise and service network. With new and exciting machines, such as the state-of-art model DX400LC-7M, the power players are primed to enhance the delivery of construction equipment solutions into 2024. The collaboration is well-positioned to capitalise on the growing construction equipment market in the region, says Mr. Ayman Ismail Ahmed, CEO – Industries, Trading and Services for Bukhatir Group, adding that GGE’s own client-led approach has helped the company to double its business in the last three years: “Our growth strategy was focusing on partnering with new premium brands in all our products segments, increasing our customer base in UAE and offering variety of aftersales solutions to our clients. Starting with increasing our market share for our existing brands, such as Putzmister, Liebherr, BOSCH Rexroth, and Kempi, and also by partnering with premium brands such as Develon Heavy Equipment and EP Material Handling. We are also acquiring a dealership for a premium compact machinery brand for UAE, regionally, we are expanding our hydraulic business at GGE Qatar and exploring opportunities in the Saudi market.” Returning to the Develon collaboration, Mr Ahmed adds: “We started our partnership with Develon in early 2020. Develon is well-known as a premium manufacturer of heavy machinery globally, and we are one of the major players in the heavy equipment market in UAE. Together, GGE

and Develon can offer a variety of models and aftersales solutions to our clients.” Mr Ahmed continues: “The partnership has helped us to gain a continuous growth of our market share in the UAE, with more than 100 Develon units sold in 2023, and our plan is to grow with Develon to reach a double-digit figure for our market share over the next 12 months.” While he is enthusiastic about the year ahead and the development of the Develon brand in the UAE, the Covid pandemic at the turn of the decade threaten to de-rail the partnership before it had even got properly started: “We started our partnership with Develon in January 2020 when the whole world went into the pandemic. Much of the success now, and even the approach to market, reflects a determination to deliver the best service possible to customer, even in the toughest conditions. This challenge put more responsibility on both GGE and Develon to establish our brand. It was a tough time, but, today, we can see the great success of Develon occupying a premium position in the construction machinery market in UAE. This success wouldn’t have happened without our customer’s support.” As a thank you to those loyal customers, and to also present the message that the branding may have changed to Develon from Doosan but the cutting edge technology and market-leading services remain the same, the two companies hosted their own customer gathering in November. Mr Ahmad Swaid – Divisional Manager Construction equipment at GGE says that it was also an unmissable

chance to introduce new products that will soon be in the market: “We wanted to celebrate this successful growth story with our amazing customers at the customers’ gathering event at JA Resorts Hotel. We had more than 150 attendees from different Emirates and industries and displayed our best-selling models from the DX450LCA-7M (a 45t crawler excavator) to the DX190WA7M wheeled excavator. We also revealed our latest model, the DX400LC-7M (a 42t crawler excavator) which we expect to be one of the best-selling models in UAE considering

the benefits of its features we are offering on this machine. The DX400LC-7M puts us ahead of the competition in many aspects in its category. “ The customer and client base of GGE remains essential to any plans it has for the future. It is this all-important group which is helping to spread the word. “Since we started the new generation (7M Series) in the UAE market during 2022, we have been receiving excellent feedback from customers as they appreciate all the improvements done on the machines from cabin comfort and ergonomics to performance parameters, efficiency and durability. The testimonial of this success is our customers are repeated orders, as well as the large number of orders we received due to referrals and recommendations between the end users and owners.” As suggested, Mr Swaid expects the launch of the DX400, and the features and services that are wrapped around it, to have a major impact in the market and on-site: “The introduction of the DX400LC-7M is Develon’s response to the escalating demand for 40-ton machinery in the UAE market. Weighing in at approximately 42.2 tons and featuring a robust 2.03m³ heavy-duty bucket, the DX400LC-7M is meticulously designed to enhance productivity across a spectrum of job sites. Its substantial operating weight, durable major components and long crawler ensure higher stability, durability, lifting capacities and manoeuvrability, make it an ideal choice for navigating the challenging terrains prevalent in the UAE construction landscape.”

15 The rebranding to Develon is part of a strategic move by HD Hyundai Infracore (HDI) to strengthen its global presence, says Mr Edward Chung, VP – HD Hyundai Infracore. The name Develon, symbolising ‘Develop’ and ‘Onwards’, represents HDI’s commitment to innovation and continuous evolution in construction equipment and solutions for building infrastructure. This change marks a significant step forward since HDI’s inception in 1937 and their dedication to exceeding industry expectations with innovative products and solutions. The DX400LC-7M is a stellar example of this approach and it arrives as both one of the first original Develonbadged machines in the market, and also loaded with cutting-edge technology and best-in-class performance. For example, powering the DX400LC7M is a powerful Scania engine generating 311 horsepower which works in perfect combination with other hydraulic system components of the machine, says Mr Chung. “This is not only delivering superior

DREDGING UP THE PAST

CATERPILLAR CELEBRATES 130 YEARS OF EARTHMOVING

T

he year – 1893. Only 44 of today’s 50 states formed the union, and Grover Cleveland was elected the country’s 24th president. College basketball was in its infancy, holding its first official game. And the Bucyrus Steam Shovel and Dredge Company opened a new manufacturing facility in South Milwaukee, Wisconsin, U.S.A., to improve and expand its production facilities. Since this point in history, the management decisions and equipment produced in South Milwaukee have not only changed the construction and mining industries but also the course of history. In the early 1900s, Bucyrus-produced equipment was a major contributor to the monumental excavation projects of the time. “Dredges were used as part of the California gold rush, and shovels were a part of the vast Mesabi Iron Ranges,” recalls Shawn Paap, commercial manager for Cat Electric Rope Shovels (ERS). “The New York State barge canal enlargement project, the largest U.S. earthmoving project between 1902-1912, also used Bucyrus dredges.” The company’s 40- to 50-ton steampowered shovels played a significant role in building the Panama Canal, one of the most exciting projects in human history. Over the course of the project, 77 shovels produced in South Milwaukee were used to construct the canal. When combined with the shovels produced by Marion Steam Shovel Company, a Bucyrus heritage company, 101 of the 102 shovels used in the project were from Bucyrus.

World War II saw unprecedented demand for excavators in Europe, and virtually 100% of the company’s entire output from 1942 to 1945 was devoted to the war effort. Postwar, the company embarked on a $2 million project to increase plant capacity by 20%. By the middle of the 20th century, Bucyrus was a global company with an expanded product offering, and more than 74,000 Bucyrus machines had been produced and used in over 166 countries. Important innovations Central to the strategy of moving production to South Milwaukee was to increase manufacturing efficiency of its core large machinery, such as rope shovels and draglines. Over the last 130 years, more than 32,000 machines have been produced at this location, and to this day, massive Cat Electric Rope Shovels are being produced by the plant. The heritage of today’s Cat 7495 and 7495HF models used for the mining industry began as railroad shovels. Between 18821930, more than 1,850 railroad shovels were produced. Those first models weren’t mobile by today’s standards, being pushed on rails or rollers. This manual process to move the massive machines didn’t meet the efficiency needs of mining. A series of early innovations originating from the South Milwaukee facility helped to improve rope shovel efficiency and durability. Borrowing Caterpillar’s technology of the 1920s, the steam-powered shovels adopted track-style rotating belts to significantly increase mobility. Prior to the 1930s, the entire rope shovel structure was riveted, but those rivets were replaced by welds to improve durability.

Over the last 130 years, more than 32,000 machines have been made in Wisconsin and its huge Cat Electric Rope Shovels are being produced by the plant.

“We are proud of our long heritage in South Milwaukee and the impact the equipment produced at this location has had on the global market over the last 130 years”

FEATURE DECEMBER 2023

A major transition for rope shovels and the industry was the shift from steam power to electric. Bucyrus pioneered the use of electricity as a power source more than 100 years ago, as early as 1917. The advent of a new DC electrical power system in 1919 ushered in the infancy of today’s modern ERS design, and the transition from steam power to electric was completed by 1939. “As today’s mining industry increases its focus on the electrification of equipment to reduce carbon emissions and boost

efficiency, Caterpillar is proud to be the leader in a product that has been electrified for several decades,” says Caterpillar Product Value Stream Manager, Flor Rivas. Revolutionising the market for Bucyrus and the industry at large, machine design transitioned to much less complicated AC electric motors from the rudimentary DC drive system. “AC drive motors were simpler, lasted longer, required less maintenance, worked faster and more efficiently, and delivered

greater power than DC motors,” comments Mike Haws, technical steward for Cat Electric Rope Shovels. “The introduction of insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) fuse-less technology led to the evolution into digital gate turnoff (GTO) systems. And a partnership with Siemens in the 1970s put Bucyrus on the cutting edge of AC drive technology, pushing drive system availability upward to 99%.” Since Caterpillar acquired the Bucyrus product line in 2011, an excellent ERS

product has been elevated to the next level of safety, productivity and reliability by making the machines safer, easier to access and maintain, perform better under extreme conditions, efficiently integrate technology, and deliver higher availability. Caterpillar introduced a liquid cooled motion regulator cabinet shortly after the acquisition to more efficiently dissipate the heat generated by electrical components. This enabled the global product to reliably operate in extreme temperatures ranging from -40˚ C/F to 50˚ C (120˚ F) and at altitudes reaching 5250 m (17,220 ft) without derating. The company also introduced a faster propel transfer switch to cut lag time by 70%, improving productivity. After intensely studying the habits of operators with varying skill levels, Caterpillar introduced its first technology advancement package for the Cat 7495 series shovels in 2016, Operator Assist – Enhanced Motion Control (EMC). This innovation delivered machine protection and simplified operation to boost longevity and improve productivity. Protecting the dipper, the software automatically limited swing forces when the operator attempted to swing the dipper through the bank. It also safeguarded the crowd ropes and brake, and it prevented boom jacking situations to improve machine cycle times and productivity. Today, more ERS technologies to improve efficiency and lower costs are being introduced at a faster pace than ever before. This year, Caterpillar launched two new technology packages for ERS models – the

Integrated Technology Package (ITP) and Operator Assist Package (OA). Eliminating the need for additional in-cab displays from one-off tech packages, ITP and its modules serve as the foundation for launching current and future technologies. It also provides seamless integration and quicker installation of Cat MineStar Solutions’ operational technologies that help to track, monitor and manage the shovel. OA offers more advanced machine protection and operating simplicity. It

From 1990 to 2022, roughly 237 machines – both Bucyrus 495 and Cat 7495 series – have moved more than 105 billion tonnes of material.

Cat ERS models Since the acquisition, Caterpillar has produced more than 200 of the 120-tonne (134.4-ton) capacity ERS models in South Milwaukee, initially under the Bucyrus name and now as Caterpillar. The average lifespan of today’s Cat 7495 shovel is 20 years with machines working in some of the harshest operating conditions around the world, from the subfreezing oil sands of Canada to the arid Chilean deserts where average annual rainfall is less than 24.5 mm (1.0 in). From 1990 to 2022, roughly 237 machines – both Bucyrus 495 and Cat 7495 series – have moved more than 105 billion tonnes (116 billion tons) of material. If this quantity were moved by the 364-tonne (400-ton) Cat 797 mining truck, it would have resulted in 290.1 million truckloads and have taken over 13.9 million hours to complete, given a 2.88-minute cycle and truck spotting time. “We are proud of our long heritage in South Milwaukee, the impact the equipment produced at this location has had on the global market over the last 130 years, and the talented and dedicated team continuing the tradition of excellence in the production and support of Cat electric rope shovels and draglines,” concludes Jeremy Niedens, facility manager, South Milwaukee for Caterpillar.

NEW TO THE MARKET:

BOBCAT FORKLIFTS

BOBCAT TALKS EXTENDING ITS EXPERTISE INTO THE LOGISTICS MARKET WITH ITS ADVANCED FORKLIFT TRUCKS

I

n the dynamic world of logistics, where efficiency and reliability are paramount, Bobcat has emerged as a formidable player. Known globally for its range of compact machinery, Bobcat has now extended its expertise into the logistics market with its advanced forklift trucks. The Bobcat brand is famous the world over for its extensive range of compact machines, which are used in construction, the agricultural sector, landscaping, demolition, recycling and many other industries. Bobcat loaders and telehandlers, which can be equipped with attachments such as buckets, grabs, bale clamps, dump hoppers and pallet forks, are often used for material handling and logistics tasks. It is therefore no surprise that products from sister company - Doosan Industrial Vehicle (DIV) forklift trucks and warehouse equipment - are now part of the Bobcat family. These material handling machines will be produced in the well-known

Bobcat colours from 1st January 2024. The history of Bobcat forklift trucks goes back to 1968 when the first forklift truck was produced in South Korea under the Daewoo brand. In 2005, the company was taken over by Doosan, after which DIV was founded in 2011 as part of Doosan Infracore. In 2021, Doosan Bobcat took over the company and all of the elements of the organisation. These include two factories in Incheon (Korea) and Yanta (China), where forklifts are produced, and a factory in Lübben (Germany) where pallet trucks and stackers are made. The company is currently active in more than 90 countries. The Bobcat range for logistics and material handling now consists of various product lines: a series of diesel forklift trucks with lifting capacities from 2 to 16 ton; a series of LPG forklift trucks with lifting capacities from 2 to 7 ton and a series of electric forklift trucks with lifting capacities from 1.2 to 10 ton. The latter segment also includes a line of electric forklifts with three wheels for light

work from 1.2 to 2 ton. The warehouse solutions include pallet trucks, stackers and reach trucks. During the last LogiMAT exhibition in Stuttgart in Germany, Doosan Bobcat introduced a number of new machines. The new B80NS forklift truck was on display, which is part of a series of electric counterbalanced forklift trucks with lifting capacities of 8 and 10 ton. In addition, two prototypes were on display: the three wheel B18NT electric forklift with a lithium battery and the B30X-7 Plus hydrogen forklift. According to Bobcat, the new forklift offering is part of a strategic expansion which underscores the brand’s commitment to innovation and versatility in various industries, including construction, agriculture, landscaping, and more. To that end, Bobcat is also now offering the company’s latest generation R-Series telehandler range for markets in the Middle East and Africa, providing a choice of 12 models powered by Stage IIIA engines. The telehandlers cover lifting heights from 6 to 18 m with maximum lifting capacities between 2.6 and 4.1 tonne.

31

Warehouse solutions are further enhanced with pallet trucks, stackers, and reach trucks.

The R-Series telehandlers offer agility on demand, with a newly configured transmission system providing enhanced smoothness to carry out the trickiest jobs at height with surgical precision. These operations are also facilitated by the combination of the Boom Positioning System, the updated, ultra-accurate joystick, the inching function and the improved visibility from the cab. An enhanced inching pedal design is easier to use and reduces fatigue. A higher engine brake provides a shorter stop distance and increases safety on construction sites. Turtle/rabbit speeds are standard on all models and operated from the joystick. Bobcat R-Series telehandlers feature a new cab with unmatched ease of use, designed around the operator, offering a unique central control panel for optimized 360° ergonomics. The new high quality, contemporary interior of the cab features stand-out R-Series branding, colours and textures that clearly

reflect Bobcat’s DNA. In the ergonomic design, all surfaces have been optimised to offer increased space and visibility. It is based around a new 5-inch LCD display providing interactive and streamlined information, including the feed from the rear camera for easier and more precise operation. Uptime is key in construction. Bobcat telehandlers have always had an extra tough design and the R-Series models build on this reputation, thanks to protective shielding of all vital components in key areas, and the robust frame and boom for working in every possible environment. The shielded design provides protection for hydraulic and electrical components (including the pipes, harness and transmission) and a steel plate protecting the base of the machine. All Bobcat telehandlers have a rigid boom structure and a robust frame with box section layout. All areas of the R-Series range are designed to inspire full confidence in customers, beginning with

the low centre of gravity and well-balanced design of the machines, which also incorporate a heavy counterweight and a long wheelbase. The optimum weight distribution of the Bobcat telehandlers, with or without the compact stabilizers being employed, also allows operators to safely reach as high and as far as possible while handling heavy loads with the machines. Under the bonnet, the well-proven Perkins Stage IIIA engine provides high power and the simplicity of its mechanical injection system. In addition, all R-Series telehandlers now feature a new engine hood with a steeper profile that increases visibility and reduces blind spots by 15% on the right hand side of the machines. Together with the new dashboard design, this provides excellent unobstructed visibility from the cab, allowing the driver to move around the job site with ease and minimises accidents or mistakes.

COMPLETE COMPACTS

BOBCAT DNA AT DIV The DIV website states that it strives for simple and powerful machines that offer the driver a lot of comfort and that are also environmentally friendly. These ambitions make it clear that the two companies are a great fit, because Bobcat’s principles are virtually the same. Both also invest heavily in innovation to develop valuable and reliable products for their customers, so that they can perform their work efficiently and get optimal return on their investment. Thanks to the integration into Doosan Bobcat, DIV can benefit from extensive R&D facilities, machine management innovations, marketing knowhow and Bobcat’s extensive dealer network, while Bobcat now has a virtually complete portfolio of compact machines.
