What The_Ealinger did in February

EALING W5 > Here’s a week-by-week overview of what ‘The_Ealinger’ (just a typical Ealing resident and worker), was up to this past month.

The Ealinger

roundup

Week 1: We started off the month exactly right on the 2nd with a bit of live music at the Orchard Cafe at OPEN Ealing on Singapore Road down in West Ealing. Pitshanger-based band Chasing Deer played a selection of cover songs alongside their much-appreciated original compositions. We were even treated to a couple of brand-new never-heard-in-publicbefore songs destined for their soon-to-bereleased four-song EP. A few days later, on the 7th, we put our business hat on and attended the Ealing Council quarterly Ealing Business Partnership meeting at the Ealing Town Hall, where Cllr Yvonne Johnson, portfolio holder for finance, performance and customer services, was presenting the Council’s ‘Medium Term Financial Strategy Update’, including a new 2 per cent social care levy for residents. Probably the most exciting thing to happen in the borough this month, though, was the Wonderland Collective, which opened on the 8th at 185 High Street in Acton (see cover photo). Curated by Eat Me Drink Me, this project saw the W3 Gallery space on the High Street in Acton converted into a pop-up gift shop.

p u nd Week 2: Two highlights to the second week of February: half-term, which meant the usual holiday-time emptying of the borough, apparently many to skiing holidays. The other highlight was Valentine’s Day, and The_Ealinger hosted a love-fest during #EalingHour on Twitter. Week 3: This was the week of Storm Doris, with things like tree branches, leaves and wheelie bins being blown about. We also heard a lot about Dr Jonathan Oates’ presentation about the history of Pitshanger, delivered at Ealing Central Library. The_Ealinger spent the evening of the 22nd in North Acton, at the Co Work Hub, where local PR whiz Hayley Smith was talking about “The Art of Asking”, and how to build strong and useful relationships with clients. Week 4: Not wanting to speak too soon but there’s been no frost on cars in the mornings! Thanks to Pancake Day on the 28th, temperatures climbed above zero and tended to stay there. Even the spot where we took our foggy January cover pic was all brightened up with spring flowers.

Q&A

Alistair Young The Ealing Club Community Interest Company is a social enterprise (without ties to any venue) set up to highlight Ealing’s legendary music heritage with a view to inspiring new opportunities for live music into the future. As a founding co-director of this initiative, Alistair Young is working hard to put Ealing’s music heritage back on the map, to help to enhance the potential of live music in the area.

The Ealinger

Q&A

ow do the plans to redevelop 9-42 The Broadway (a scheme that means rebuilding the original location of “the Ealing Club”) affect the Ealing Club CIC and its live music programme? A > Provision of a ‘state of the art’ live music venue on a location cited by many journalists as being ‘The Cradle of British Rock Music’ could be an exciting prospect for Ealing and live music across London.

February 2017

Plans for the entire 9-42 Broadway site are due to be considered by an official enquiry in May and approval will be subject to a subsequent decision made by the Secretary of State. As for our own music events, the Ealing Club CIC is planning to deliver proprietary events such as Ealing Eclectic at several venues while we continue to curate and support elements at a growing number of festivals undertaken in Ealing.

Any news about The Ealing Club movie? A > ‘Suburban Steps To Rockland – The Story of The Ealing Club’ has now been post-produced. Its director Giorgio Guernier has carefully blended together over 30-40 interviews along with an extensive library of stills and archive footage to tell the story of Ealing’s relationship with ‘The Blues’ and rock’n’roll. Let’s hope 2017 will see this project distributed and broadcast to as wide an audience as possible. What three things can Ealing

people do to show how much we love live music? A > 1. Sign up to The Ealing Club CIC newsletter and follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram 2. Invite friends to Ealing to sample live music events including: Ealing Eclectic, Ealing Summer Festivals, The Hanwell Hootie, SoundBite and EMFF. 3. Encourage those who are able to sponsor ‘Suburban Steps For Rockland – The Story of The Ealing Club’. ealingclub.com @TheEalingClub @EalingClub – interview by Carlene Bender
