Q&A

ow do you manage the switch between Team GB and sports massage in South Ealing? > I was a high jumper for over 20 years and often on the receiving end of therapy for many strains and pulls, back discs and knee issues – you name it! So that’s where my interest in massage therapy began. But it took me until last year to make it my career. Although I’m spending less time in athletics now, I’ll still be leading the GB under-20 team to the European Championships in Italy next June – I’ll have a team of 50

athletes and 15 staff including physios and massage therapists, so I won’t be taking any massage oil myself! Have you been living in Ealing all this time? > I moved to Ealing in 2009 – my husband Mike is Ealing born and bred. I joined a small running group and have a wonderful circle of Ealing friends. We (the Espressos!) meet every Saturday at 9am from Paperback

Coffee in South Ealing for a run, coffee and chat. Tell us about your 2017 plans for SaddleDrunk Massage. > After local entrepreneur Stefano Dall’Aglio launched his SaddleDrunk cycling brand (tagline: ‘Intoxicated with the freedom of cycling’), he and my friend Jo Goh set up a massage therapy studio in the basement under Munson’s, which Jo grew into a thriving business. When Jo moved back to Sydney she was keen to pass on the baton, and introduced me to her clients.

Now I’ve teamed up with osteopath Anji Gopal (findinghealth.com) and our mission is to help local people who suffer from injuries or simply need time to themselves, to relax and unwind. Anji and I are really excited to be in the heart of St Mary’s Village, with so many cool new businesses springing up here. To book a massage (sports or relaxing), visit the website or call Jo on 07714100086. @SDMassage @JoJenningsMassage saddledrunk.com/sm – interview by Carlene Bender

Christmas: it’s not over yet! MONTPELIER W5 & UXBRIDGE ROAD W7 > Missing the delights of Christmas already? That’s more than a good excuse to head out for a long walk around Ealing to see the Christmas lights blinking and flashing on so many houses, for your very entertainment. The two on this page are in the Montpelier W5 area: Montpelier Road, and around the corner up on Park Hill. However if it’s some belated gift shopping you’re after, you’ll have to wait until Amreen Malik’s shop on Uxbridge Road in Hanwell (opposite Lidl), Amreen’s Gifts and Interiors, reopens on January 3. @amreen_malik

‘The_Ealinger’ is now monthly – and here’s why From fifty-two editions in 2016 to just twelve in 2017: editor/publisher Carlene Bender explains why there’ll be less (but actually more) of ‘The_Ealinger’ in 2017 What it takes to run a local magazine; and why subscribers matter

“It was a snapshot summary of a week enjoyed in the borough”

F

or the past 12 months I’ve been putting out a light and easy magazine every Monday called ‘The_Ealinger’, packed with photos from in and around Ealing, West London, showing what the people of Ealing – “Ealingers” – had been up to over the previous seven days. It wasn’t about covering news or politics or crime or like any of the other publications we already have in Ealing (few as they are) – it was just a snapshot summary of a week enjoyed in the borough, with a minimum of text so readers could absorb lots of information in a short space of time. I’d been publishing the ‘Contactus Ealing’ local business magazine since 2012, a magazine with its own specific mandate to publicise local shops and services, but always I noticed this big gap in the communication loop of local events and happenings. I realised that we would hear so much about an event in the promotional build-up, but unless it was a major event, it was usually difficult to find out afterwards what happened, if it was a success and who attended, and to see photos from it. In fact it was often virtually impossible to find out what was happening when an event was actually going on, the kind of information which would help me decide if it was worth taking the time to head down there myself. I thought there would be other people thinking the same thing, and I imagined that if I showed how much exciting stuff was going on in Ealing, we could draw more people away from their social media devices and out to events, not only making these events more successful, but building community links and more face-to-face neighbourly interactions, the sort of stuff that everyone feels good about afterwards. I thought there would be a market for ‘The_Ealinger’... Click to read more on LinkedIn: tinyurl.com/TheEalinger-monthly
